I'm writing this slightly ahead of schedule as I have no way of knowing when we'll be back from the Sidepodxmas party. That means I only have half a days worth of goings on to share with you, but I will do my best. Here are some of the things we're talking about:

  • The FIA gala took place on Friday, which means Bernie can now rest at ease - Jenson is officially the 2009 World Champion. There are snippets of news and pictures all over the place, but the Autosport Gallery is a good place to start, if you want to see lots of men in black suits.
  • Lucas di Grassi, known around these parts as di licious, says he definitely has a deal with an F1 team, although he has not yet said which. Everyone assumes it is with Manor GP/Virgin Racing, alongside Timo Glock, which would make quite the pairing, in my opinion. Lotus have said they will be revealing their drivers on Monday, as well, so a good part of the entry list will be cleared up soon.
  • It looks like Piquet Jr will be having another go at NASCAR, participating in a second test with Red Horse Racing. Does this mean the Brazilian has a chance behind the wheel of a completely different series? How would he fare going round in circles all the time?

That'll do it for now. I hope your weekend is going okay, and assuming that we recover in good time from the party, I will see you in the comments.

the last thing Chris said to me before he went to bed was, "i've got to get up pretty early tomorrow so I might not see you." I wonder what the modern student definition of early is?

ooh, Heikki Kovalainen en visite à Enstone indeed.

  • Journeyer13/12/2009 at 09:49

ooh, Heikki Kovalainen en visite à Enstone indeed.

If Renault did indeed sell up to Lopez and Gravity, they might lose Kubica, depending on how that get-out clause is worded. But from what I understand, Kobayashi may have signed up with Gravity and could be waiting for a Renault seat to materialize.

So we could see Kovalainen-Kobayashi at Renault, with Kubica partnering Rosberg at Mercedes, and Sato getting the 2nd Lotus seat.

  • Alex Andronov13/12/2009 at 09:51

    Chris has gone now too.

He agreed early was pre 12

  • Journeyer13/12/2009 at 09:51

And hello to everyone who's here. ;)

  • Rich13/12/2009 at 09:52

So we could see Kovalainen-Kobayashi at Renault, with Kubica partnering Rosberg at Mercedes, and Sato getting the 2nd Lotus seat.

Renault would be crazy to lose Robert for Kovy. Robert is their one hope for getting anywhere next year.

  • Journeyer13/12/2009 at 09:53

Renault would be crazy to lose Robert for Kovy. Robert is their one hope for getting anywhere next year.

It wouldn't be Renault's choice if Kubica decides to leave. If that get-out clause can be triggered, we know Kubica will go running to Brackley.

  • Rich13/12/2009 at 09:53

Heikki Kulta has changed his mind. He now thinks Heikki will drive for Lotus.

I think Heikki and Jarno would be a really good pair for a new team to end up with and definitely will be in the hunt of being the best of the new guys (Sauber is not included in that category)

  • Rich13/12/2009 at 09:55

It wouldn't be Renault's choice if Kubica decides to leave. If that get-out clause can be triggered, we know Kubica will go running to Brackley.

Do you not think Brackley are going for Schumacher? Nick is as good as Robert with better development skill - so he is a fall back if MS fails his medical.

  • Journeyer13/12/2009 at 09:56

Do you not think Brackley are going for Schumacher? Nick is as good as Robert with better development skill - so he is a fall back if MS fails his medical.

I honestly don't think they are going for Schumacher at this point - not as a race driver, anyway. But I suspect they are probably targeting him in a pitwall role. It's discussed in a bit more detail if and when my guest post gets published. :)

  • Journeyer13/12/2009 at 09:57

Nick is as good as Robert with better development skill.

One wonders if Brackley has the same assessment.

If I were Mercedes - yes I would try and get Schumacher on the technical/development and PR not as a driver. Which ever driver they get next to Rosberg it is a one year ticket as Vettel is the guy they really want.

  • Journeyer13/12/2009 at 10:01

you MUST go to Spa then. ;)

  • Rich13/12/2009 at 10:02

    Agreed on both counts.

Renault look as if they will compete under their own name, so it might be better for Robert. Robert is a driver that likes a clear number 1 status - he is not going to get that at Mercedes.

  • Journeyer13/12/2009 at 10:04

It depends how fast he thinks the Merc and the Regie are at this point. I would say the Merc will be faster.

As for clear number 1, he can and should get it at Merc by beating Rosberg on a regular basis. As for Renault, we don't know if the new management will go for a numero uno policy, or an equal partner policy.

  • Alex Andronov13/12/2009 at 10:06

I think Rosberg might surprise Robert who this was essentially bettered by his team mate. Renault's strategy will in part be based on what they have signed with Robert in way of contract details. He is a real complainer and for no other reason if I were Brawn I would not go for him. Robert and Kamui is a good pair (even though I think Kamui is way way over-rated).

Morning all, hope you had a great party last night... sadly I couldn't join in on the comments because my idiot cousin-in-law and his girlfriend came to visit so we had to go to dinner with them...

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/12/2009 at 10:38

Looks like David Haye wants the SPOTY - is anyone else uncomfortable with this?

  • Rich13/12/2009 at 10:39

My thoughts on vacant seat seats next year

Campos - vacant seat? Only drivers with healthy sponsorship deals need apply.

Lotus (Jarno to be announced tomorrow) - I would got for Kumai as the second driver.

Renault one vacant seat - hopefully they will give it to Kovy - he is better at set up than Robert

Virgin (Di Grassi to be announced this week)

Mercedes one vacant seat for one year only (may people think this is now for he who must not be mentioned).

Sauber (two vacant seats - but a Ferrari engine deal) I am sure they will go for Petrov as the new guy. They will wait until Nick's known (and likely) availability) otherwise it will be Fissy in some Ferrari deal.

So only USF1 is left - they will be last so I feel sorry for any driver in that team. Lopez will be one once he has all the sponsorship money.

  • Amy13/12/2009 at 10:43

Looks like David Haye wants the SPOTY - is anyone else uncomfortable with this?

It depends a bit on where Kumai goes, which in turn depends on who gets to own the 75% stake in Renault F1.

    From Alan Baldwin:

Sato misses out on Lotus F1 drive

    It's Trulli-Kovalainen, folks!

  • Journeyer13/12/2009 at 12:11

    It's Trulli-Kovalainen, folks!

I guess he just went to Renault to inform them that he's declining their offer. Wow - a THIRD driver that's turned Renault down. :O

So I suspect we will get Kubica-Kobayashi at Renault. If Kubica somehow manages to leave, I'm guessing Montagny will take his place.

Kovalainen (who realistically won't win anyway), Hamilton then Barrichello. Then somewhere waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay down the list comes Button. 26th or so.

even if he did I wouldn't be too bothered. I'd almost expect him to embarrass himself if he did.

  • Jon Waldock13/12/2009 at 12:28

the way i see it, if he comes back, i dont care, it'll be interesting to see how he does, but if he dosent, im not going to loose any sleep

  • Journeyer13/12/2009 at 12:28

even if he did I wouldn't be too bothered. I'd almost expect him to embarrass himself if he did.

my point is, i certainly thought it was a hypothetical situation that would never ever happen. yet it just might happen. same goes with jenson becoming McLaren team leader. ;)

  • Rich13/12/2009 at 12:30

well, we don't think Michael Schumacher's coming back to F1, do we? ;)

No we don't - I will only be happy if did return and gets trashed by his team mate (yea wishful thinking). Seems crazy to me to get MS back in a seat.

  • Rich13/12/2009 at 12:33

schumi is not going into my fav team! He can't! Lol

i'm so not tired and I have to get up in 5 hours #blamefourstar

  • Alianora La Canta13/12/2009 at 14:40

    the last thing Chris said to me before he went to bed was, "i've got to get up pretty early tomorrow so I might not see you." I wonder what the modern student definition of early is? {Comment #21}

When I was a university student, "pretty early" meant 6:30am - I had to commute 20 miles each way to get to university and if I stayed in bed any later I'd have missed my lift to get to morning lectures. It was not a coincidence that I became one of my friend's "alarm clocks"...

"Very early" - reserved for days when I had a lecture/event starting before 9am - was 5:30am. Except on graduation day, when I had to get up at 4:40am and watched the highlights of an IRL race over breakfast...

ah... erm.. yes. i haven't checked them really. but yesterday has made me realise several things...

    1. I would really like a decent small digi camera i can take everywhere with me so my DSLR doesn't have to come all the time..

    2. Mac's look even more amazing when they aren't in the apple store, and i love them lots.

    3. Apple TV is an incredible invention and I think i may need one of those too...

    4. Watching a man walk round the room with an iphone taped to his chest is a hilarious and an awesome sight.

    5. I was right to stay away from Bassano's cheeky Vimto.

and last but not least, everyone is so lovely :)

  • Kathi13/12/2009 at 15:21

only because it was so close to the day. if people had more time to plan, it would be more likely to sell out.

Economy back then was better compared to now. And I don't think prices have gone down enough to allow people to impulse buy F1 tickets. But given sufficient lead-time to plan should make a sellout more likely, if a comeback does happen.

  • Alex Andronov13/12/2009 at 16:26

I am looking at http://www.singaporegp.sg/download/Annex2.pdf as I'm still thinking about where I want to sit in Singapore. Where I want to sit and what I am willing to pay for it are not quite the same. My ticket for Eau Rouge was cheaper than all but Bay and Padang which is ridiculous, I'd assume almost any F1 fan in the world would rather see Eau Rouge than any of the views at Singapore.

Only that we're 99% sure it'll be Kovalainen alongside Trulli at Lotus. Sato's confirmed they're no longer in the running, and a Finn arrived at KLIA tonight. ;)

  • Steven Roy13/12/2009 at 16:46

Notus are signing a Finn and an Italian but they are not saying that it is Trulli and Heikki

  • Journeyer13/12/2009 at 16:48

To be exact, it'll be announced at 4 AM GMT. You might still be up to do the breakout, Mr C! ;)

32 - Journeyer said: 13/12/2009 at 09:49:43ooh, Heikki Kovalainen en visite à Enstone indeed.

I know it is not the Lotus, but why ruin a great name by having Sato run the 2nd seat. I mean Mr. "c" adoer can drive as well. Woooops Sato, not Nakajima. Then again, there's not that much difference between them Sato and Nakajima is there?

  • Journeyer13/12/2009 at 16:53

That's an outdated comment from me. ;) The 2nd seat is as good as Kovalainen's.

But for the record, at least Sato scored points in a midfield car. Got a podium too.

I have been looking at some smoothie recipies which I want to try out in a bid to honour the goals on my 2010 List of getting in better shape and eating more fruit and veg. I am not convinced any cold is good. Kathi did a better job of selling Finnish cold than you did with Canadian cold. I fancy something a touch more tropical than either

    Forza Alex

In mr "c" adoer's defense, Steven, people with no legs are said to be able to withstand one more additional "G" force than people wiith legs. This is due to actually having a little bit more blood, and oxygen in the brain than collecting in the bottom of the legs. We can only assume that mr. cadoer exceed his "G" force limitation and blacked out soimewhere before the turn, thus heading straigth into the wall.

Although, the other theory, advanced by Prof. Woodwiss, that mr. c is the Britsh Badoer, is highly possible as well. Further research is needed..... :P

    Legard would scoop that

  • RG13/12/2009 at 19:11

He thumped a big dumb Russian. When he beats Klitchko then he's worthy!

Perhaps. But he beat a unbeaten, unknocadownable Russian. Twice the size of him. Mightly impressive.

    He has gone freelance.

Just retired from 5 day cricket as he was getting too injured,

  • Steven Roy13/12/2009 at 19:14

    32 I think.

Is that old for stanfing about a field all day occasionally throwing a ball or hitting it with a bat?

  • Nick in Dubai13/12/2009 at 19:17

Is that old for stanfing about a field all day occasionally throwing a ball or hitting it with a bat?

Bowling repeatedly supposedly puts more pressure on your joints than nearly every other sport, there is very little let up, and if you injur something its pretty much a cycle though being injured everywhere else as you try to compensate and put more pressure on other places

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/12/2009 at 19:17

It is wrong. I'm very disappointed he's done that!

I honestly don't know what's wrong with doing so!

Because it's a bit X-Factor-ish and I think a sportsperson should be humble when in the running for such an award.

Not if they don't get a big enough audience to justify it. It's up to them to make their sport big enough that it can't be ignored.

  • Lukeh13/12/2009 at 19:18

Because it's a bit X-Factor-ish and I think a sportsperson should be humble when in the running for such an award.

You're not gonna like the judges later on then giving each contendor their view and criticism...

No way. It's hardly like baseball pitching where the starting pitcher has to throw 120-150 94mph pitches once or twice a week without a 20 minute break between each pitch

  • Chris13/12/2009 at 19:21

That team was obviously rubbish ;)

what a year for this man *applauds Giggsy*

  • Nick in Dubai13/12/2009 at 19:23

No way. It's hardly like baseball pitching where the starting pitcher has to throw 120-150 94mph pitches once or twice a week without a 20 minute break between each pitch

There is far more impact for a fast bowler, all the joints are straight, the bowler lands and pulls there arm down at the same time. they have to be mindfull of where they land.

I watch a bit of baseball and none of the pitchers seem to be putting themselves though the ringer quite as much

  • RG13/12/2009 at 19:24

That team was obviously rubbish ;)

For someone who also shouted 'Get in, Arsenal' on twitter earlier, you really are walking a fine, fine line ;)

They throw half a dozen balls and then have a break while someone else has a shot. I refuse to believe of all the sports on the planet that cricket is the hardest on the body

  • Scott Woodwiss13/12/2009 at 19:26

    Oh not james Corden AGAIN.

beating someone up for a living isn't really f1 is it... i'm not saying people shouldn't like it, i just think it's horrible.

Not as horrible as Schumacher punting people off the track at 200mph

  • Chris13/12/2009 at 20:26

Right, I have to go for a bit. I prob won't be back before the end. Let me know who wins!

  • lou13/12/2009 at 20:27

Not as horrible as Schumacher punting people off the track at 200mph

i don't agree with that either tbh.. and i wouldn't dream about defending him. it's just the f1 i love to watch is very different to two people hitting each other in a ring. I know that's probably not what it's all about but that's what i see and it's not a nice sight..

  • Lukeh13/12/2009 at 20:27

I think it is fair to say it is a sport, but I am not so sure about wrestling these days.

Perhaps they should start scripting boxing too, get Barry McGuigan to run in and cause mayhem with a chair

They won the ashes and that trumps everything apparently. Winning a 2 horse race is a ridiculous reason for a team to get any award

  • Scott Woodwiss13/12/2009 at 20:31

    Stupid cricket.

  • Rich13/12/2009 at 20:31

    @200mph??

I am not sure the speed is the issue it is the sportiness (or lack of) of the action of to take somebody out deliberately.

It is why I hope MS never returns to the F1 track.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/12/2009 at 20:31

Mens?!!!! Kidding right. Shoulda gone to the womens.

Considering the ladies did it as amateurs too :(

  • Lukeh13/12/2009 at 20:32

I hope Jake enters himself as a late contedor in a shock

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/12/2009 at 20:32

Can someone vote for Button on my behalf please? ;)

  • lou13/12/2009 at 20:32

Can someone vote for Button on my behalf please? ;)

    with pleasure :)

  • Lukeh13/12/2009 at 20:32

Can someone vote for Button on my behalf please? ;)

    Just done so.

I assumed you meant Ryan giggs though

  • RG13/12/2009 at 20:33

I assumed you meant Ryan giggs though

I accidently typed 04 Gavin, sorry!

  • Scott Woodwiss13/12/2009 at 20:33

But the England cricket team weren't world champions after coming so close to being out a job this time last year.

  • RG13/12/2009 at 20:33

But the England cricket team weren't world champions after coming so close to being out a job this time last year.

Englands womens team won anything though.

  • Scott Woodwiss13/12/2009 at 20:33

    James Corden's on his phone?!

  • lou13/12/2009 at 20:34

I assumed you meant Ryan giggs though

you voted for someone i've never heard of over Jenson? (he's probably been in the rest of the program but i wasn't paying attention)...

  • Lukeh13/12/2009 at 20:34

But the England cricket team weren't world champions after coming so close to being out a job this time last year.

I think Scott missed the sarcasm ;)

    voting?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/12/2009 at 20:34

Is James Allen sitting next to Fabio Capello?

  • Lukeh13/12/2009 at 20:34

    James Corden's on his phone?!

Probably his agent getting him on the follow up show, and every other show on the BBC

  • Lukeh13/12/2009 at 20:34

Is James Allen sitting next to Fabio Capello?

    It's not james allen!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/12/2009 at 20:34

    In fairness, they're both Welsh...

  • Steven Roy13/12/2009 at 20:35

But the England cricket team weren't world champions after coming so close to being out a job this time last year.

The last time they won the ashes they all got MBEs. It is totally ridiculous that they get rewarded because most of the time they are rubbish but occasionally they win

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/12/2009 at 20:35

Is James Allen sitting next to Fabio Capello?

    It's not james allen!

    Who is it then?

  • Lukeh13/12/2009 at 20:35

    Who is it then?

    Not james allen ;)

  • lou13/12/2009 at 20:35

hmmmm i may let him off seeing as he has a bad back....

  • Rich13/12/2009 at 20:35

OK I saw your tweet and I get what you are saying... but F1 used to be Barbaric too. I'm not the biggest fan of boxing but they are a heck of an athlete...

David Hayes is supremely fit, though I am not sure he would survive some of the other boxers like the K brothers or a left hook from NZ's David Tau.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/12/2009 at 20:35

  • Rich13/12/2009 at 20:38

+100 for bigging up David Tua ;)

What I saw on YouTube of David Tau - that has to be the hardest left hook in the history of the sport. I only occasionally watch boxing but switch of if there is blood.

  • Lukeh13/12/2009 at 20:38

    :( Hillsbrough.

  • Scott Woodwiss13/12/2009 at 20:39

    YOu missed Rog

  • RG13/12/2009 at 20:40

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/12/2009 at 20:42

  • Steven Roy13/12/2009 at 20:42

Coach of the year. He will be fired by July

  • Lukeh13/12/2009 at 20:42

I find that unfair, anyone could improce the England team after the failure that was Steve Mclaren

  • RG13/12/2009 at 20:43

Coach of the year. He will be fired by July

July 2012. Unless England really fail.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/12/2009 at 20:43

Coach of the year. He will be fired by July

Coach of the year for assembling a team from the world's best league and actually qualifying for once?

  • Steven Roy13/12/2009 at 20:43

July 2012. Unless England really fail.

    They will

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/12/2009 at 20:43

What is Lee wearing on her head?

  • Scott Woodwiss13/12/2009 at 20:44

Voting closed. We'll know if Jenson's won in 15 minutes.

  • RG13/12/2009 at 20:44

    They will

Depends on fail, I see fail on not reaching the quater finals.

  • Lukeh13/12/2009 at 20:44

Depends on fail, I see fail on not reaching the quater finals.

    Agreed.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/12/2009 at 20:45

I really truly hope he recovers...

  • Lukeh13/12/2009 at 20:46

Ballesteros is awesome. And when he was younger he reminds me of the football Deco as random as that is...

fingers crossed he recovers soon :)

  • Steven Roy13/12/2009 at 20:47

Ballesteros is awesome. And when he was younger he reminds me of the football Deco as random as that is...

    I can see the similarity

Yeah, see where lukeh is coming from.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/12/2009 at 20:50

He does. He's much more emotive.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/12/2009 at 20:51

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/12/2009 at 20:53

Why did they just show the Patron Highcroft Acura from the ALMS?

  • Scott Woodwiss13/12/2009 at 20:53

Why did they just show the Patron Highcroft Acura from the ALMS?

    My thought exactly.

  • Lukeh13/12/2009 at 20:53

I want to watch Da Vinci Code/Angels & demons now after hearing this epic music :) Love it!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/12/2009 at 20:54

    Brabham? Australian?

Sorry, was talking about the LMP1 car...

  • RG13/12/2009 at 20:54

Not fancy a Newcastle Eagles mention. Dominate basketball and get nothing.

  • Lukeh13/12/2009 at 20:54

I forgot who David Brabham was at Goodwood

    #sorrydavidbrabhambutyouwereareallynivceguywhenyoutoldme

Good to see they pointed out Le Mans.

  • Steven Roy13/12/2009 at 20:54

    Brabham? Australian?

They got the wrong car so I guess they did well getting a pic of him

  • Scott Woodwiss13/12/2009 at 20:55

It's gotta be Usain Bolt for Overseas award. Why else would they get Michael Johnson on the stage to present it.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/12/2009 at 20:55

    Amy, your Rog is on!

  • Lukeh13/12/2009 at 20:56

To be fair, usain Bolt is quite fast

  • lou13/12/2009 at 20:56

    #sorrydavidbrabhambutyouwereareallynivceguywhenyoutoldme

you asked him who he was?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/12/2009 at 20:56

  • Steven Roy13/12/2009 at 20:56

Looks like they are both getting it. Amy won't be happy at missing it

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/12/2009 at 20:57

    Rog's wife is awesome, BTW...

  • Scott Woodwiss13/12/2009 at 20:57

    Usain Bolt for me.

A man who sets word records by sleeping and eating chicken nuggets. What a guy.

  • Lukeh13/12/2009 at 20:57

you asked him who he was?

Nooo, when I spoke to him I went blank, i knew who he was but i just went blank!

but he had his overalls on so I put two and two together and he saw me looking though...

  • Scott Woodwiss13/12/2009 at 20:57

  • Lukeh13/12/2009 at 20:58

    Here's the main event!

  • Jordan F113/12/2009 at 20:58

#424 - Nick in Dubai said: 13/12/2009 at 19:18:26won the ashes and the world cup in cricket, and no-one reported it in the news? Little sexist, surely!

    also the world t20 too...

Nah..... It is just like the number of girls / women on this site who like a partcular driver for reasons that have nothing to dop with there abilities driving a race car on the track. ....

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/12/2009 at 20:59

    Here's the main event!

I fear a lot of people will get disappointed...

  • Scott Woodwiss13/12/2009 at 20:59

*fingers crossed for Jenson* Come on, let's not have it 3 times an F1 personality finishes 2nd. It better not be bloody cricket either.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/12/2009 at 20:59

Why wasn't Dario mentioned just before?

  • Lukeh13/12/2009 at 20:59

I fear a lot of people will get disappointed...

As long as James bloody Corden doesnt apear again, it'll be fine by me!

  • RG13/12/2009 at 20:59

Why wasn't Dario mentioned just before?

I'm just as unhappy with the Eagles not being mentioned.

  • RG13/12/2009 at 21:00

All that voting and only for third?! Oh come on.

  • Scott Woodwiss13/12/2009 at 21:00

I heard J and for a split second I was worried!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/12/2009 at 21:00

I heard J and for a split second I was worried!

    Jes... ahhh!

  • Scott Woodwiss13/12/2009 at 21:01

    NOT AGAIN! GRRRRRRRRRRR

  • Lukeh13/12/2009 at 21:01

    Jenson is second!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/12/2009 at 21:01

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

  • lou13/12/2009 at 21:01

2nd's not bad :) awwww Jess looks happy for him :)

  • Steven Roy13/12/2009 at 21:01

Button and Brawn look to be still talking

  • Scott Woodwiss13/12/2009 at 21:01

What does someone in F1 have to do to win the damn thing?!

  • RG13/12/2009 at 21:01

As long as it isn't Tom Daley.

  • lou13/12/2009 at 21:01

Button and Brawn look to be still talking

good sign for 2011 then :D

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/12/2009 at 21:01

    Gutted.

People of the UK, I hate you for the third year in a row :(

  • Lukeh13/12/2009 at 21:01

    YES!! RYAN GIGGS!!!!!

  • Steven Roy13/12/2009 at 21:02

good sign for 2011 then :D

    :D

  • lou13/12/2009 at 21:02

People of the UK, I hate you for the third year in a row :(

    2nd isn't bad :)

  • RG13/12/2009 at 21:02

Well, I think we all knew it would happen. Well done Giggsy.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/12/2009 at 21:02

    YES!! RYAN GIGGS!!!!!

Well, if Jenson has to lose, then I suppose it's good Giggsy gets it before he retires...

  • lou13/12/2009 at 21:02

good sign for 2011 then :D

    :D

you think i'm joking :) hahah

  • RG13/12/2009 at 21:02

People of the UK, I hate you for the third year in a row :(

Thanks, though Ennis did deserve it more.

  • Lukeh13/12/2009 at 21:02

He also won the Welsh SPOTY too so yay! :D

The man damn well deserves this one though... we only have about 6 sports people in wales. ;)

  • Scott Woodwiss13/12/2009 at 21:02

    2nd isn't bad :)

But Lou, F1 has finished 2nd 3 times in a row now. 3 TIMES! There is no justice.

  • Steven Roy13/12/2009 at 21:02

you think i'm joking :) hahah

    No

  • lou13/12/2009 at 21:03

awww look at Jenson's "trying not to look too disappointed" face... awww

  • Lukeh13/12/2009 at 21:03

But Lou, F1 has finished 2nd 3 times in a row now. 3 TIMES! There is no justice.

You can;t say Ryan Giggs doesn't deserve this though!

  • Scott Woodwiss13/12/2009 at 21:03

You can;t say Ryan Giggs doesn't deserve this though!

    I never said he didn't.

  • RG13/12/2009 at 21:03

But Lou, F1 has finished 2nd 3 times in a row now. 3 TIMES! There is no justice.

On each occassion, someone has done better that year. 2007 Calzaghe dominated, 2008 was the Olypics and 2009 Ennis was robbed, but it still went to Giggs.

  • lou13/12/2009 at 21:04

But Lou, F1 has finished 2nd 3 times in a row now. 3 TIMES! There is no justice.

it's only bbc sports personality of the year... it's not a huge deal... Jenson is still the 10th ever British world champion.. and he had an amazing year, with an incredible team. couldn't have asked for much more tbh.

  • Steven Roy13/12/2009 at 21:05

It feels odd to have this finish at this time of night. I lways think of it as being on really late

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/12/2009 at 21:05

Can I ask, objectively speaking, what did Giggs do in 2009 that was SPOTY worthy?

  • Steven Roy13/12/2009 at 21:05

it's only bbc sports personality of the year... it's not a huge deal... Jenson is still the 10th ever British world champion.. and he had an amazing year, with an incredible team. couldn't have asked for much more tbh.

And he has a McLaren contract and he gets to wear a rocket red T shirt when Lewis wins.

  • Scott Woodwiss13/12/2009 at 21:06

Can I ask, objectively speaking, what did Giggs do in 2009 that was SPOTY worthy?

    PFA's Player of the Year.

On each occassion, someone has done better that year. 2007 Calzaghe dominated, 2008 was the Olypics and 2009 Ennis was robbed, but it still went to Giggs.

Is the emphasis not on "personality" and success against odds?

  • Jon Waldock13/12/2009 at 21:06

But Lou, F1 has finished 2nd 3 times in a row now. 3 TIMES! There is no justice.

    who won?

  • Scott Woodwiss13/12/2009 at 21:06

    PFA's Player of the Year.

PFA is Professional Football Association, before you ask :P

  • Scott Woodwiss13/12/2009 at 21:06

    who won?

    Giggs.

  • lou13/12/2009 at 21:06

And he has a McLaren contract and he gets to wear a rocket red T shirt when Lewis wins.

i was talking about 2009... no need to ruin it with 2010 talk ;)

  • Lukeh13/12/2009 at 21:06

Can I ask, objectively speaking, what did Giggs do in 2009 that was SPOTY worthy?

PFA Player of the year, easily the best player for Manchester Utd in terms of consistency and performances in 2009, all at 36 as well

Just a shame he's Welsh tbh!

  • Pat W13/12/2009 at 21:06

It feels odd to have this finish at this time of night. I lways think of it as being on really late

it feels pretty late to me, i'm done in :-)

  • Steven Roy13/12/2009 at 21:07

Can I ask, objectively speaking, what did Giggs do in 2009 that was SPOTY worthy?

Like a lot of these things he is not getting it for one year. He is getting it for his career. It helps that he is a well liked player in the sport that is by far the most popular in the country

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/12/2009 at 21:07

And all the Man U fans voting for him no matter what.

  • Jon Waldock13/12/2009 at 21:07

    Giggs.

    serious? who came third?

  • Steven Roy13/12/2009 at 21:08

Just a shame he's Welsh tbh!

He is no more Welsh than me. He just happens to play for Wales. His name isn't even Giggs

  • Scott Woodwiss13/12/2009 at 21:08

    serious? who came third?

    Jessica Ennis

  • RG13/12/2009 at 21:08

Ennis. Even after about 100 votes from me.

  • Lukeh13/12/2009 at 21:09

He is no more Welsh than me. He just happens to play for Wales. His name isn't even Giggs

But that's what I meant, it's a shame he plays for the Welsh national team. He's second only to John Charles in terms of best players ever to play for them in my opinion, but Charles got to play in a World Cup unlike giggs who sadly never will despite his talent.

  • Lukeh13/12/2009 at 21:09

    eh?

    Giggs was born in England

  • Jon Waldock13/12/2009 at 21:10

  • Steven Roy13/12/2009 at 21:10

Just like George Best. Great players who never got to play in the biggest tournament.

I knew this before, and I'm ashamed to say that i got their albumn a couple of months ago and havent listened to it yet because i thought their albumn might ruin the live bit because it was just so flipping amazing. But now i'm listening to their albumn, it's bought it all back.

we didn't give it enough thought when you said you were coming. once you said what you were planning we all new it was crazy. community fail on our part, we should've pointed it out in advance, as opposed to 20mins before you planned to leave.

my biggest tip for the tube like that, is that when the train stops, you get off, walk back/forward a carriage, and then get back on again. even i get harrased at night

haha it's alright, i didn't think either. i'll not be attempting to take that kinda journey again though. have never felt unsafe like that before, and don't plan on feeling like that in the future. However we had a lovely evening and it didn't spoil it ;)

Agreed. It's not good for apprentice students to be leaving a party at 10pm and it is a lot safer for you two to stay then get on trains alone in London at that time of a Saturday night.

  • lou13/12/2009 at 22:01

my biggest tip for the tube like that, is that when the train stops, you get off, walk back/forward a carriage, and then get back on again. even i get harrased at night

it was overground train, and we were on a tight schedule, and Em wasn't feeling to great. moving was basically impossible... bad times.

You need too time it so that the subway's doors close behind you too to make sure your firends do not follow you...

i had it a couple of weeks ago, cramped train, i got on and there was adrunk guy iwth one of those blowy things that makes a noise and pops out when you blow into it, and he kept doing it and i tired anyway, so i got off moved up a carriage and the rest of hte journey was fine

problem was it was just em, I and these guys on the carriage. I would have felt much safer if there had been others there.

is there a guard carriage? usually in the middle of our trains, there is a blue light on the side of the train indicating where the guard is. I always try to sit in that carriage. it has saved me a few times.

I don't think there was even a guard on those trains.

I have noticed on other new trains though the guard's little office has been moved to the centre of a carriage somewhere in the middle of the train, they're in a transparant box..

  • Jordan F113/12/2009 at 22:11

I think Jeremy is talking about where the conductor sits. There's normally a guy in the middle car of a subway who has to check that the station is clear in both directions before he closes the doors (Usually on someone runnig down the stiars just getting onto the platform....) At least that how they work in North America...

  • Jeremy13/12/2009 at 22:11

we dont have that kind of thing, but it sounds good

Shame. Even if they just did it for the night trains. I know its expensive, but it's necessary, I think.

We have people on the platforms for that. The guard may do double duty at night when the stations have no staff present, but they have signs calling them guards, so I'm going with that :)

I forgot to mention last night, I was hoping to record a (very) brief thing for the season review when I got home today, but it turns out I got back later than I thought I might and was far too tired. Will attempt tomorrow.

Most trains here have guards, I think these suburban lines have so many trains that maybe they didn't see a need, or he was hiding at the back somewhere. On the underground they don't have any on-board but in busy periods they've got people with loudhailers on the platform.

I enjoy helping and I just have the kind of brain that something I haven't thought about for a couple of days is still rattling around and then something triggers an idea from it. I spent an hour discussing onductive inks with a mate on the phone and literally the second I put the phone down I came up with two inventions to stop sharks attacking surfers. I have never been surfing or been attacked by a shark and my head was buzzing with an hours worth of info on a project we were working on but something just triggered in my brain and I had two new ideas.

    Sounds good.

You could add something that says that you aim to back up the educational part of the course by providing exposure to the real life competitive racing environment.

You need to make it clear that you know what is required to compete as a team whether you do or not.

To offer experience of all aspects of racing from team management to sponsorship and from engineering to driving

  • Bassano13/12/2009 at 23:42

    Is it the UK championship?

    Yeah, I think so

  • Jon Waldock13/12/2009 at 23:42

    Is Mr C about?

  • lou13/12/2009 at 23:43

Gala is now scheduled for 00:05... *sigh*... anyone want to take guesses on when it will actually start?

  • Steven Roy13/12/2009 at 23:43

it's 'live uk championship snooker' apparently...

That is also on BBC2. The score is 9-7 and the first to ten wins so you could have 2 and a half frames to play yet

  • lou13/12/2009 at 23:43

    Is it the UK championship?

    yes

  • Jon Waldock13/12/2009 at 23:43

    gimme a min

  • Bassano13/12/2009 at 23:44

    A single 'game'

  • lou13/12/2009 at 23:44

    A single 'game'

i don't really know what that consists of.. have i mentioned i find snooker very very boring? and have no idea about scores or rules..

  • Steven Roy13/12/2009 at 23:45

"a project we were working on"

This is not anything to do with work but some business ideas which we were trying out. We have a few invntions between us and we have a 50:50 deal on each others. Trouble is the economy is screwed and even though we know how to sort major problems that the printed electronics industry has no-one wants to talk to us any more.

  • Alison13/12/2009 at 23:46

i don't really know what that consists of.. have i mentioned i find snooker very very boring? and have no idea about scores or rules..

It is very dull.... When all the balls are in the holes the game is over. They'll decide in advance how many games they're going to play ie. best of 17 or 31 or whatever and they'll play games until it's impossible for someone to lose.

  • lou13/12/2009 at 23:46

    1am

am gonna be optimistic and suggest 12:30..

  • Steven Roy13/12/2009 at 23:46

i have no idea what a frame is.. :D

Minimum 20 minutes. A frame is an individual game of snooker. Higgins just one that one so there will be at least one more frame and possibly two

  • lou13/12/2009 at 23:47

Minimum 20 minutes. A frame is an individual game of snooker. Higgins just one that one so there will be at least one more frame and possibly two

right... someone tell me when the snooker is over :D

I used to leave it on the TV for hours, sometimes just as background, sometimes watching closely. Then one season ended, the next one came around and I turned it on, I couldn't get interested in it again. No idea why.

In hindsight, I shoulda known it was too sweet and needed more WKD to dilute it a bit

    You rang?

  • Bassano14/12/2009 at 00:08

somehow i don't think lack of WKD was the main problem with the cheeky vimto :D

Well, with the port being 20% adding more WKD at around 5%, it would've reduced the acohol ratio

    Seems odd but true

  • lou14/12/2009 at 00:09

    You rang?

how long is this snooker going to go on for? i feel like i'm dying of boredom! :(

  • lou14/12/2009 at 00:09

that's exactly what you'll be like lou ! hehe

    it's true...

  • Steven Roy14/12/2009 at 00:09

Snooker is now effectively over. Another minute or two to tidy up then photos, presentation and posing

  • emily14/12/2009 at 00:10

Well, with the port being 20% adding more WKD at around 5%, it would've reduced the acohol ratio

    port D:

that does make strange sense. though surely port and WKD should mix and then annihilate one another in a quantum physics-y way?

  • Journeyer14/12/2009 at 00:27

the WTCC season highlights don't seem too bad.. almost promising for the f1 highlights..

if I'm not mistaken, the season highlights are produced by the respective commercial rights holders, so it may not exactly tell us how the F1 will be.

    campione indeed, gabriele. :)

  • Journeyer14/12/2009 at 00:36

  • lou14/12/2009 at 00:50

  • lou14/12/2009 at 01:17

awww both Jenson and Ross seem to be on good terms.. lots of smiles between them. Jenson got a standing ovation too!.. not sure why Jenson seems to be slightly whispering in his press interview though. Bit like he has a sore throat, or doesn't want others to know what he is saying...or like he is ill/ has a cold.

  • lou14/12/2009 at 01:17

    Just saying. ;)

    :D ah okay

I am heading off to bed.

    night Steven

I'm off too, must get some more sleep, but that's made me all happy :)

night to those still awake! xxx
