Good morning Heikki fans, welcome to a slightly late Heikki news. Has it really been four weeks already?

Since I last updated you the season has well and truly begun. Heikki has hit the track twice, and I was there to cheer him on both times. Unfortunately in Australia he retired on the 19th lap with a water leak, but successfully bought the car home in 15th in Malaysia after qualifying in 19th position. His team mate Jarno finished 13th in Australia so is technically leading him in the championship even though they’re both on zero points. I will not stand for this for too long! Many team members were positive about their performance after Malaysia and although I’ve missed all three practice sessions this weekend they appear to be doing OK. Twelfth or better Heikki, you can do it!

In Australia I was lucky enough to get a tour of the Team Lotus garage and after holding a piece of Heikki’s car for a photo, I would like to make it clear that the water leak was not my fault. Probably. I also learned from my tour guide Mabel that Heikki’s new trainer is a man named Adam. Never before have I sourced my Heikki news from directly inside the team!

Off track Heikki spent a bit of time in Kuala Lumpur before coming to Melbourne, and then headed straight back there for the two weeks before the Malaysian Grand Prix. While he was there he tweeted about Tutti Frutti icecream no less than three times! Driver endorsements must work because I had good intentions to try it while I was in Malaysia but never managed to stumble upon one.

Team CEO Riad Asmat also tweeted to say that the first person to spot Heikki in KL would win a team cap. It’s not often a team effectively gives the fans permission to stalk their drivers! That’s not a prize I’d ever win because I never approach anyone outside of the track. If they’re on their own time, I leave them alone!

Team Lotus ran a street demo of their car in Putrajaya before the Malaysian Grand Prix, if you haven’t watched the excellent video the team released, you should go do that now! Watch some other videos on the channel while you’re at it, they’re all brilliant.

Before taking to the track in Melbourne Heikki had to do the FIA post concussion test as a result of his accident at the Race of Champions last year. Obviously he passed so that was good news! David Croft mentioned on his 5Live commentary in Malaysia that he had talked to Catherine about the accident and she told him it took her eight weeks to recover. I hope this won’t stop Heikki from coming back to the RoC this year! This year's event will be held in Frankfurt, Germany on the 3rd and 4th of December.

Also in Melbourne, Heikki attended an Air Asia signing in the city on the Thursday before the race. That’s the same Air Asia tent where I entered their Uberfan competition. If you missed that news (this is where Heikki news briefly becomes Amy news), I won! Air Asia will be flying me to Korea to watch the Grand Prix with Team Lotus. I suppose none of the other entrants can lay claim to writing a monthly blog about what one of the teams drivers has been up to! Unfortunately I won’t be sitting up this end of the plane.

Time for me to end my Heikki news because qualifying is about to start and thats always a good reason to drop everything you’re doing. I shall leave you with what is obviously the greatest picture of 2011. Legendary.

I am watching AFL while I wait for the F1 to start. About 8 men in a row just failed to pick up the ball as it was rolling along the ground. This sport suuuuucks.

Although they are only 1 point apart and it's always exciting when games are close :)

Is that the one where they all basically fight and kick a ball through poles and a guy stands behind the poles?

yes, and if you miss the main goal theres backup goals so you can still get a point for trying. Bah.

He tried getting there last year but the volcano stopped him. I don't think he's banned but I have no idea why he is absent this year.

During qualifying this morning my Dad and I were watching and the program and Katherine was in the room. During the break between the sessions Katherine piped up: "ooh I have an F1 question. Who's that?"

She was pointing at Bruno Senna. No need on information about the drivers just a name check on the cute ones :)

  • Dan gough16/04/2011 at 12:14

I have a question: in qualifying there was a shot of the Ferrari garage and several of the crew were wearing badges saying 'Rob Smedley, Panda Grand Prix 2011' on. Any idea what that is about?

It was like a kids party!

I suspect that may be the plan in 2012 at this rate. Schumacher is contracted for then, meaning matters may be delayed until 2013. I have a feeling Vijay may even be depending on that replacement happening at some point.

I don't know, they just cover the one season which is the first number. Something I've never understood!

  • Alianora La Canta16/04/2011 at 15:04

Why do they cover two years?

They don't cover two years; they're published towards the end of the first year, but I think the publishers consider the drivers to be "the class of F1" until the next F1 season starts.

  • Amy16/04/2011 at 15:12

Heres something stupid: because the F1 was delayed on TV they had to delay the streaming of it on their website too.

"Our digital rights only permit us to simulcast what is broadcast on ONE - FOM won't allow us to live stream it outside of broadcast."

    Absolutely pathetic.

  • Mr C16/04/2011 at 15:14

    Absolutely pathetic.

same for the bbc though. they get away with it because of the red button. ONE need a spare channel.

    Ooh that's a bit fail.

  • Amy16/04/2011 at 15:16

    ah.

ONE is a digital only HD channel, so they show the AFL on their regular free to air channel too since not everyone has gone digital yet. But they can't just show it on the free to air because then all the people who are HD capable will whine that they can't watch it in HD.

It was nice to see @ONEHD getting lots and lots of tweets from F1 fans though, this is the first year they've had a twitter and have been able to get such feedback :)

Always been a very weak part of Scholes' game, even though he's one of United's greatest midfielders. The man defines the term 'foul'.

Certainly looks like a close WRC title fight for the time being, I hadn't realised.

The leading four seem to be very equally matched. Solberg (P) is quite stretched keeping up. Kimi isn't doing very much (sorry Lady Snowcat). Private Fords are a bit hit and miss although Solberg (H) came back under Superally and did some quick times.

Looks like VW are announcing a comeback to WRC in Sardinia. They've sent 'save the date' emails. Solberg (P) is telling anyone who'll listen that he'll be driving for them. He even barked it into my dictaphone and he doesn't know me from Adam.

    In other news, loving this:

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Actor Nicolas Cage was arrested after he got drunk in the city's French Quarter and argued in the street with his wife over whether a house they were in front of was theirs, police said Saturday.

I thought Kimi would be faster this year but I'm just glad the Solbergs are still in let alone quick.

May do, it'll be mainly a GT race, and I do like GT racing. 2 hour timed race from 12.30am with a 7am start for F1. 8am if I ignore Jake. Probably will watch it. :)

Just time for 4 episodes of 24 series 2 #longwaybehind

Not sure if I'll watch the ALMS race.. it is on really late, but it is Long Beach, but there are hardly any LMP entrants, but it is livestreamed for free by the series...

If it's starting at 12:30, I'll see how I am when it's due to start. Could be a lot of fun but don't want to fall asleep in the middle of the F1 and my energy levels have been strange this weekend.

Well that answers Christine's question about why we should keep racing in China

This year he was in a boat race in the Caribbean, if that helps explain things. (It's an annual race, so future years may see an EJ-less race on the second week of April).

Good read, Maverick. Do you think something else was going on with the car electrically? Obviously KERS isn't working right for him, but do you think there's anything more to it?

I know precision is the name of the game in F1, but RBR really did cut it too fine and shot themselves in the foot.

I think blaming the KERS entirely for the grid position is deflecting the responsibility. They should have got out of Q1 with that car while it was towing a caravan forget a bit of KERS weight. I mean look at the cars it has to beat.... 6 new team cars and only 1 other.

They should have considered that without KERS the soft tyres might have been necessary. Yes, there were technical issues but it was poor tactical choices that sunk Webber's boat.

I agree but they lost time in FP3 due to KERS and wasted a load of time between then and quali trying to sort it. They would have been far better concentrating on the basics of the car

  • Steven Roy16/04/2011 at 22:49

If they thought that, then couldn't they just have turned it off even at that stage? I just see it as classic Red Bull reliability issues and incompetent strategy. They've always been champion at shooting themselves in the foot strategy wise. It's just that of late, the car's been fast enough to hide a multitude of sins.

Seems that way. As brilliant as Newey is, he pushes his cars way too close to the limit so a system like this is bound to have cooling issues

  • Alianora La Canta16/04/2011 at 22:55

The announcers kept saying they were using the rubber gloves because Webber's was broken and Vettel's was not, but they are usually wrong about most things.

The rubber gloves are supposed to be used on all KERS cars unless the system is known to be disarmed in such a way that re-arming is impossible without tools. That's basic safety.

  • Steven Roy16/04/2011 at 22:55

Also, why doesn't Adrian Newey take a stand and not run the system, if he hates it that much?

While they were working on Webber's car after he returned to the pits with some kind of electrical fault Newey stood in front of the car with a sketchpad drawing the front right suspension and brakes.

  • Steven Roy16/04/2011 at 22:56

Clearly Webber's got the experimental wagon. It could pay off at some point but it's patently not now.

  • Maverick16/04/2011 at 22:57

The Speed guys were saying that it was odd that Webber's guys had them on and Vettel's did not. And they said it was because they didn't know if kers had discharged and that was proof it was malfunctioning.

    Whatever.

  • Maverick16/04/2011 at 22:59

I think this may be a last-ditch attempt to avoid permanent No. 2 status. After all, if the advances pay off, Mark will end up getting the initial advantage and then be able to build on it while Vettel's still learning how Mark mastered the new stuff.

The glove situation indicates that Mark is using KERS and Sebastian isn't. That in itself would affect things like ballast emplacement and quantity, cooling and braking systems. A Red Bull in tune in KERS will be very different to the current one that isn't, just as the cars would be if the aero systems were different. In fact, the cooling situation may logically lead to slightly different aero to get the right amount of cool air in the car the right way.

When Vettel is that far ahead of the McLarens, I don't think that having or not having KERS this weekend would make the slightest difference during qualifying.

He only needs it at the start of the race

  • Alianora La Canta16/04/2011 at 23:08

Too late. Vettel has too many points and the team will just say "Well he's the driver in the lead, so we will back Vettel"

For this year, yes. However, if Mark can turn this around quickly, Red Bull may not cast him away. If he does a really good job of the turnaround, he may even get a 1.5-1.5 system re-established for 2012 (though this is admittedly unlikely).

In Q1, Vettel was only 0.9 km/h quicker through the speed trap with KERS than Webber was without it.

Hmmmm Mark is not on good form. I'm biased because I've never really rated him but if it were up to me, I'd be looking to replace him at the end of this season. Tbh I think he was lucky to survive last year with his outbursts. I've decided I want them to hire Di Resta and have a little fluffy dream team :D

I'm not convinced Vettel has KERS. Why weren't the mechanics using gloves with his car, as would be good safe practise if KERS was being used?

  • Alianora La Canta16/04/2011 at 23:14

Hmmmm Mark is not on good form. I'm biased because I've never really rated him but if it were up to me, I'd be looking to replace him at the end of this season.

I will acknowledge that. If the gamble goes pear-shaped, we might not see Mark in 2012 F1 at all.

I'm not convinced Vettel has KERS. Why weren't the mechanics using gloves with his car, as would be good safe practise if KERS was being used?

I've never seen those odd marigold gloves in use before today and almost every car on the grid has KERS. Although I can see that it seems sensible to use them all the time, were they not only using them because there was a fault?

  • Kai16/04/2011 at 23:17

Tbh I think he was lucky to survive last year with his outbursts.

I totally disagree. I didn't see them as 'outbursts'. Vettel is much more of a crybaby and I can't stand him, but I like Webber and you don't, so we agree to disagree.

And I've just spent 7 hours cleaning my garage, so I don't have the energy nor inclination to go back and forth.

I don't see what he's gambling with? Horner said Vettel would be running KERS although I guess he might have taken it off if there were problems with it. I was under the impression it was running on his car. I think Mark's just well off the pace.

  • Kai16/04/2011 at 23:18

  • Maverick16/04/2011 at 23:21

he was faster than Vettel - but with a one lap stint that's no good to him

  • Alison16/04/2011 at 23:22

no tyre temp, the team let him down.

Yeah, do you not need a couple of laps back to back to get the harder tyre working properly? Without the time for that, it was dense not to just use the soft tyre.

  • Steven Roy16/04/2011 at 23:22

Yes he was - Vettel didn't get through to Q2 off his first timed lap of his stint either!

I'm confused. I see your times and yes Vettel's first lap wouldn't have been enough but all three were successively quicker and all quicker than the corresponding lap from Webber. Where was Webber faster?

  • Maverick16/04/2011 at 23:27

OK, that convinces me. Vettel had KERS and Red Bull's gloving principles are unsafe...

Webber's time on his second stint was 1min36.468

Vettel only did a 1min36.744 on his first lap

They had to beat Kobayashi with 1:36.147

Could Vettel have done that given only one lap on the hard tyres?

  • Alison16/04/2011 at 23:32

Probably not, it's hard to compare lap for lap like that though. I mean presumably Vettel knew he was winding up for a run of a few laps. If it was do or die on that first lap, I'm sure there were a few 10ths at least that he could have pulled out the bag.

  • Alison16/04/2011 at 23:35

Your post makes a very good point. Knowing how the tyres behave, choosing the hard tyre to have that last attempt just looks even stupider than it did originally.
