Today is World Standards Day, and supposedly this is to celebrate those who create and uphold standards in organisations. Do we need to come up with some Sidepodcast standards? For instance, pandas must be mentioned at least once a day? Or Mr C must bake a cupcake at least once a year and document it on a live show? What do you think? Meanwhile, here's what we're talking about:
- Coulthard headed over the bridge in Mumbai, as mentioned in F1 Minute, and managed to break the speed limit as he did so. That's not surprising, given he was in an F1 car. What is surprising is that the state wouldn't give organisers their deposit back because he broke the rules. Weird.
- Raikkonen is hoping to finish on the podium in Brazil, which he says he doesn't think will be easy. I'm not sure why, considering that he keeps popping up on the podium all the time. Of course Ferrari are fighting for third in the championship, so a podium would be a great help for that.
- There's more politics about with Saudi Arabia suggesting they are backing Ari all the way, whilst Jean Todt has written a letter to club members saying that Vatanan's cause lacks any real plans and ambition. Charming!
That'll do it for now. Our Forgotten F1 Teams series came to an end yesterday, but there will be an omnibus along at some point, and you should also expect a Brazil schedule today. I'll see you in the comments.
Hello wednesday!
Bernie asking Jenson Very nicely not to win the title just yet... http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/formula_1/article6873363.ece#cid=OTC-RSS&attr=796995
It's that time again?
It gets earlier every day, I swear
Hello SidepodPeoples
hey
My vision is actually going blury, so i'm going to depart. Night all
Night.
G'night Jon
Hey Bassano
Night Jon
It's been a quiet few days for news hasn't it
Not even BBC F1 chose the Kemble test :)
Hello. Alas I failed to make it home by midnight today :(
It has been quiet all night.
At least there was new Master chef tonight so that should be on the iplayer now
Evening. You need a new job.
Waaay ahead of you :P
Will it ber Junior Masterchef when this finishes or Celebrity?
:D
I thought you may be
And a holiday
Evening guys
You sure you dont need some help?
Not celebrity. We just had that. As long as it doesn't get axed, I care not.
hello
ANy reason there were 11 'F1 Minute' tweets today?
Backlog?
hehe, i meant the new arivals :P
I have been watching mythbusters with this in a semi-lurk mode ;)
Hey Nick
Leap day?
With what? My job? Are you offering? :P
exactly that. it was a "we had a busy week" catchup.
Scratch that, more like 20 I think
You need an F1 Minute auto-ping
Anything i can do without driving up there?
Errr call in a bomb threat so I can go home early tomorrow?
Not that I am aware of
bbc f1 are still running: "Schumacher 'revealed' as the Stig" as a key story.
Ah right :-)
SEO
I guess not. I need work experience at the moment. cant you live closer to the rest of the world?
true. or mildly hopeless organisation, which is probably preferable.
Looking at the site, the latter is quite likely
Nick, can you web design, there should be a job going over at the BBC when they realise?
Hah. I would give you a job. I only have 20 days until I'm off and away though so I think I'll make it.
I only have 13 days :D
No!
I can tell you if a plane looks ugly or not... need an intern to do that?
Ooooh where are you off to?
Semi-lurking was a techniques i developed after i was banned from lurking ;)
Dubai!
Interns don't get paid, you know that, right?
Morning, everyone. :D
Christine, DC's in Romania? I thought he was in India, and Renault were in Romania? ;)
11 :D
Hi Journeyer
HI Journeyer
Woooo well if you can afford that, you don't want to be working for me.... It'd take about 8 years to save up for that.
that. is. OLD.
Hi Journeyer
i oughta fix that :)
you really should - labor of love and all that. ;)
you'll get brownie points for not only reading, but also correcting the daily.
Hehe its home... I'm on an air miles ticket...
Meeting my dad there which should be fun
Thats fine for a couple of weeks
Boo, Renault, BOO!
I always read the daily... Its traditional!
I read it. I just didn't know who was where
What a [bad] cover up!
YAY! :D
What who when???

What is that a photo of? Brazil paddock?
Seems to be, unpacking?
"Sao Paolo 2009"
From the looks of it, Renault isn't using a retro livery for the rest of the season.
Which is sad - just like the NBA using retro jerseys from time to time, F1 teams should do it too. Renault yellow, McLaren orange, Ferrari red and black, Williams green, Brawn in Tyrrell blue and white, that kind of thing.
Alas, the sponsors will probably have none of it.
They still have sponsors at Renault?
Just remembered I have cupcakes
Red Bull ones?
Good point. :D They still have Total, and their red will ruin the whole Renault livery, unless Total go along with no red.
Those were muffins not cupcakes. I just have simple chocolate cupcakes
STILL no FOM race edit - and it's almost been a week since the onboard went up. What's the hold-up? :|
What's the difference?
You need to ask Mr C. He is the expert
All the tapes might be labelled in japanese?
VERY funny. :P It wasn't like this last year, though...
Im thinking they might want to save the publicity for anouncing they are going into yellow and black for next season...
i cant see them picking up a sponsor
They could run with Elf?
one cake = cupcake
multiple cakes = muffin
...i think?
Im serious, it was produced by Fuji TV, so its a possibility?
I think its more a size thing and the amount of domage on the top.
To me a muffin is what you get for McDonald's breakfast though...
oh, wow. don't get my hopes up now... :P
they'll pick some sponsors up, even if only small ones. and they still have a half-decent chance of picking up a big name - recession's starting to ease up, new management, and people usually have short memories...
Oooh, that ain't a half-bad idea...
That's an English Muffin
I thought it was a shape thing. Cupcakes have a straight sloping edge and muffins stick out and the top. Also you don't have icing on muffins
Mmm...very tasty toasted with butter though ;)
But so was last year's, and there weren't any delays from what I remember.
Whyever not?
Crashgate fallout
Ancient history.
Didn't seem to hurt them before or McLaren/Ferrari
ING was due to leave at the end of the season anyway so presumably they have been looking for a title sponsor for a while.
Its too soon. Plus there are so many new teams gunning for sponsors, not to mention RBS leaving williams and whoever else loosing stuff.
They will be bottom of the pile with not enough to go around .
2011 they should get someone though, allowing them to get loads of publicity for renault in 2010 with a retro look
But of the trio, only Renault has seen a sponsor leave (although Steven's right in that they were gonna leave anyway). But the impact of them leaving mid-season still hurt them PR-wise.
If they aren't sponsored they won't stick around, the board won't let them.
Good point. But if that were the case, why wouldn't the title sponsor have decided to start early and get exposure in the closing races of the season?
But they aren't really sponsored right now...
Because their sponsorship is not in their budget for this year and no company in the world is going to allow money from this year's budget to be called off at zero notice.
I think they will.
Leaving now would drag up loads of bad PR
They decided to commit to mitigate their punishment, they wont want to risk the FIA looking at the case again
That was unforseen. They surely had been working on a new sponsor deal to come in over the winter and the board won't just pull out because a sponsor that was going anyway leaves early.
They will pull out if there is no sponsorship over a prolonged period, like a half season..
Probably, but any deal they did could be voided by crashgate. there is so much competition for sponsors tat the moment i think it is unlikely unless they can find a driver to bring one along
But most fiscal years are ending by now - I'd be surprised if there isn't some unspent money floating around. But yeah, I guess that makes sense.
Might be some Polish money ready to splash
I've gotta get sleep, catch you Thursday if I'm not back tomorrow. May be doing a trip to IKEA in Southampton :-)
Night Pat.
Night Pat
See ya Pat
Tea Lights by the hundred, very cheap = good atmos
Night
...Dont do it! Shop anywhere else but there!
Some things they do well, very cheap
Kitchen stuff, candles
:-)
I'm looking at beds. I don't like the idea of the funny sizes though..
Try Dreams rather than Ikea
Then I'd get some ideas then buy somewhere else
You can't really go wrong with a basic wooden, slatted bed with a decent mattress
Just not from IKEA
I've got my eye on a good deal on a website.
why all the ikea hate? pat, you're not laurence llewelyn bowen (i had to google that), you just need somewhere to sleep.
I don't hate them, just their beds are odd sizes and makes beding a one-stop monopoly in the future
If I'm spending this kind of money it has to last. If it is going to last it had better be something I'm willing to keep for that long. So great mattress + cheapish bed = win. getting the right combo is taking research
how much are you spending?
I like there stuff.. i just dont think its very individualistic, you see the same things everywhere.
Reminds me of a documentry i saw on apartments in St petersberg. they went though an entire building and every home had the same stuff
fair enough.
250 on a mattress then no more than 200 on a bed. ikea frames are 100 or less so i'm off to see if i like, or to rule them out. plus i am not the only one going, mate of mine bought a house and needs stuff too.
For candles, they can't be beaten
you might, i don't
Get the measurements of standard mattresses. I think the IKEA ones are bigger so in theory, you could do an IKEA frame and normal mattress
it's a bed!
if anyone comes around our house comparing bed bases they'll not be staying long.
i figured there's not much price diff between double and king so why not have king ;-) uk is 150x200cm and continental/ikea is 160x200cm
100 sounds good.
exactly. this is for me. i'm the one living with it.
me too, that's why i'm going all that way to see 'em! the ones around here for 150 are a bit flimsy looking.
I know that, but i mean sofas, tables, lampshades e.t.c
Bookshelves & cupboards dont make much difference because its what you put in them that matters
btw I take my sleep seriously and i've had any number of bad beds i've had to put up with over the years, including current. now its my turn to choose.
i can sort of see bassano's point, but if you can afford to be individualistic when it comes to sofa's, there's a donate button on the homepage with your name on it ;)
There's a London-based company with a showroom down here because there warehouse is here. Figured I'd take a look yesterday.
They had a special discount offer. Just £8600 instead of the £10,200. Very generous I thought.
*their
Hehe, what i am trying to say is that people go to ikea because its easy and at a reasonable price. You can get alternatives for similar prices but you might have to go to more shops than 1
In fact in Dubai it costs about 2-3 times as much to buy a sofa in ikea than to get one made to your own specs!
i guess so. i think maybe furniture doesn't mean anything to me.
IKEA beds aren't odd sized the UK is ;)
:D
But the person putting it together dreams of a minimum wage
I will go back to my normally sized but tiny 80cm bed now. Good night. #wasneverhere
:-) True. They are also bigger, which is another reason to look at them.
It never really has to me, but I think that comes from having a lot of hand-me-down furniture... but I do know what I like and what I don't like when it comes to my money.
Anyway I'm not buying anything yet. I'm investigating. Will almost certainly buy online on Thursday when I've had a think.
Got to go now, bye..
Its not as simple as that.
Besides where do you think ikea furniture is made?
See ya Pat
Apparently a fair amount of it is made in Sweden, and some stuff is made by prison inmantes.
But still, you cant say everything you own is made by people earning minimum wage?
night
Absolutely not, just saying that's all
Half the clothes we wear were probably made in Chinese sweatshops
i'm pretty confident they're not 100% cotton either.
Very true.
One thing that is good about ikea stuff is that it is reasonably versatile. (assuming you know how to put it together)
Next time I'm in Vietnam, I'm stocking up on the made to measure $5 shirts
spc comments can help you out there...
Must. Leave. Interwebz
Too tempted by Alu MackBook for £699
Just had a thought will Abu Dhabi be the only f1 track with the pits on the outside of the circuit instead of in the middle?
The only other place I can think of is Donnington, but arent they going to rebuild the pits somewhere else?
I guess thats why there is a tunnel?
Also i havent seen Alianora on here or twitter for a while, is she away?
some of her comments yesterday went into moderation because they were posted via ye olde comments, but haven't seen her today though.
Ah cool, i have been away at night a bit lately ;)
someone let you leave?
is it calling your name?
It really is, if the Mac Tablet Netbook Thingy fails to arrive by Mar or is not want I need then I'll snap up the nearest refurb bargain like this fella
Till then must wait
[and watch two year BlackBooks go for £500 on ebay]
Is the tablet really going to happen? It has been discussed for so long I am starting to believe Apple put the info out so that every time they have something new coming out people assume it is the tablet so whatever they do release is a surprise
I had to go to the sidepodpub!
Then there was this roof... ;)
:)
I wish planes were still like this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKqQgNZylLw
i hope so. but maybe that's the point?
the risk to apple is that it cannibalises iphone sales. so maybe they won't release it until they have to.
You have to wonder if they ever were like that
It won't make phone calls but the latest rumours are calling it an e-book reader
If it doesn't do much else I shan't be interested
Time I was in bed.
Good night all
Night
I should too... Night*
*maybe
Night Steven [and maybe Nick]
In fact, time I wasn't here too
Hasta Mañana
It took me 3 hours today at my old job to catch up with everyone, people are tiring
Morning!
Why bother then?
They're nice people :D I am just not used to feeling sleepy this early.
Oh ok - I misunderstood your comment (Sorry!). I thought you meant that seeing them was tiring, not that it made you tired after seeing them?
makes sense, its easily read that way :D
Morning everyone :)
#MFC
Open sourced subtitles... What a neat idea:
http://www.avc.com/a_vc/2009/10/open-subtitles.html
#MFC
Youth cannot live without the internet - just youth? what about the rest of us?
I have decided this makes me a youth :)
That's a great idea - I want to see the film he talks about but I can't because my mind would be blown by a swedish film with danish subtitles!
On the flipside, it is annoying that we get all these rubbish features on a DVD and it's hit and miss whether a DVD bought overseas has danish subtitles - which will have been made if the film was released here. Why can't they include the text file in a DVD, or make a DVD player with wi-fi or something that downloads them?
The stupidest part is buying a DVD box set - often one film has danish subtitle s and the others don't. WHY???
Me too!
I can imagine that would be a bit confusing. Presumably it's not you who wants the Danish subtitles?
Morning all. How's Wednesday going so far?
No - the missus does.
If I watch a non-english film I need english subtitles - else I get mega confused!
Tis fine. How's your back?
Much better, and thank you for asking. You are the first person to have asked in real and/or virtual life :)
bad, my PC died in the office, had to run home to get my macbook
Exactly. :D
You're welcome :)
On that note, I have been given a new office chair for the home PC as an early birthday present. For the last two years I have been sitting on an old rrrrrubbish one which was given to us when we moved to Denmark.
Thing is, as soon as I started using it, the pains in my lower back and legs disappeared. It's crazy to think the old chair was causing the problem and I had been using it for nearly 2 years!
I can also recommend a gym ball. :)
I really need to get a new chair for home sorted out...
(or gym ball)
My colleague can too - she sits on one in the office and she says it really helps. It's fun and bouncy too :D
I got a really nice fake leather chair with a high back and arms that reclines - it also has great lower back support!
My mum just told me it's snowing at home. I want too!!
Sucky. It feels like a Thursday.
The bio of Nico Rosberg's Twitter account reads:
How sanitised. Can the real Nico please take over the account now?
Oooooh, me want this... :D
I hope it is printed on nice paper
I have a bad feeling it might not be... I'll wait and see if it comes out here on our stands first before I decide if I'll buy it online.
It's a shame that Ferrari are the only team with such heritage. It would be nice to see retrospective on other teams as well, but they are such babies compared to them. Only McLaren comes close.
Weirdly... The other collectable magazine from this year will probably be something on Brawn the youngest of the lot. I think you either need to be a baby or an old man. Perhaps the other teams are teenagers? ;)
The Renault brothers might have something to say about that. So would Mercedes.
Mercedes could've had that (they had raced against Ferrari pre-war and in the early 50s), but the Le Mans tragedy ensured they'd stay out of F1 for nearly 40 years. Alfa Romeo and Maserati also went bust, and duly ended up in the Fiat-Ferrari empire.
Mercedes for sure. But despite France 1906, we never even saw Renault in F1 until the mid-70s...
Well even Ferrari don't have 80 years of F1 history.
No, I agree with Christine - only a seasoned F1 fan would see heritage in the other marques. You may as well do a retrospective on Tyrrell if you do the others too!
I don't really think of Mercedes as a team?
That's because they haven't been since 1955...
That's if you take an F1-centric attitude to it all. Renault were racing before Enzo was even born.
True, but their 60 years would trump Renault's 30-ish... and we haven't even brought up the titles...
That explains it. F1 is all I know and am (not so much any more) interested in.
But then disappeared for nearly 50 years until 1977... and then disappeared as an engine supplier for another 15 years until 2000. In total, about 10 seasons post-war where Renault were a 'team'. The same is true for Mercedes...
I wonder if Brawn will become a proper Mercedes team...
14 October, 2009, Oxford, UK. Williams F1 today confirmed that its engine partnership with Toyota will cease at the end of 2009.
No surprise there. Who'll replace them though? I'm starting to believe now it's really gonna be Cosworth.
Williams will confirm its engine partner for 2010 in due course.
But if Williams already let Toyota go, there's already someone going to replace them. Just a matter of the right forum, I guess.
Williams F1 concludes engine partnership with Toyota
14 October, 2009, Oxford, UK. Williams F1 today confirmed that its engine partnership with
Toyota will cease at the end of 2009.
Frank Williams, Team Principal, said “At a time of great difficulty for us as a team, Toyota
stepped forward and agreed to supply us with engines for 2007 through to the end of 2009.
Toyota has been a very decent partner who have always respected our independence and
provided us with a first-rate technical product. We are proud that we have been able to work
with such a great company and we are grateful to the team in Cologne for their support. I
would like to single out for our thanks the Toyota engineers and technicians who have
worked within our race team tirelessly for the past three years.”
Williams will confirm its engine partner for 2010 in due course.
- Ends -
this seals it for Nakajima
Indeed.
Time for the Hüüüüüüüüülk?
I love the bit where Frank says "Toyota has been a very decent partner." He probably meant to say their lumps were rubbish. :D
"It's not you, it's me"?
Hehehe. I wonder if someone could find the press statements for their breakups with BMW, Renault, and Honda...
Morning all. See Williams have started the day with their engine news, got a bit worried when I saw it on my ipod a news item with Williams in the title... phew!
And you thought it was Rubens?
Yup. Must not jump to conclusions damnit.
Well, there was this crazy tweet that said Jenson was talking to Williams because he couldn't agree with Brawn over salary.
That's about as silly as it gets.
Williams announce plans to run 2010 engine on beer and ribena.
You didn't hear nothing from me!
Andrew Benson responds to the criticism of the selection of classic Brazilian GPs.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/andrewbenson/2009/10/your_classic_brazilian_grand_p.html
Beat me to it! Was just about to post it :P
And to be quite honest, I don't think he took it very well...
And I don't even get any of that. :P
What do you think of it, Lukeh?
He has seemed to get more and more stroppy as the season progresses! I guess no one told him F1 fans are passionate about their subject?
I can understand why the ITV era races are more intensive to edit for the team but he was quite abrupt with his explanantion. I mean, constantly putting "words" like "this" is quite ruide in my opinion.
I suppose he explained it though. I kinda sympathetise for him when you get complaints like that but at the same time, he responded a little rudely for my tastes.
Indeed. He seemed rather sore about it, especially in his reply to the first comments.
Meanwhile, this might be good news for Christine: Joe's view on Mosley's autobiography
He thinks it won't sell - it might even struggle to get published. Very surprising opinion for me, but there ya go.
*imagines Max as a TV comedian*
Exactly. I understand the reason, but there was definitely a much nicer way of saying it. And a result, many people probably won't care much for his explanation anyway.
:D :D :D
Just a thought - if they get 5Live commentary for Brazil 2003, it would probably have been Legard on the mic. :D
No 2003, but 2008 gets featured I wonder why. :)
Did I mention I am suddenly very happy with Mr Benson's decision not to include 2003?
5Live commentary is easier to edit in, probably.
:D Mind you, it'll probably be on next year's list now.
Maybe it's just me being picky but I find this BBC F1 article title - Williams deal with Toyota ended - odd...
Ended...
I don't see last years race as being a classic, at least not yet maybe a couple of years down the line. Despite what happened on the last corner of the last lap.
it hasn't even ended yet. it won't end until Abu Dhabi.
#mfc Twitter login fail whale!
I think I'm having one of them moments were you look at a word for so long it doesn't make sense or seem like a word anymore
Why is Massa in the Friday FIA press conference?
Just to check up on him, I guess? He's at the paddock anyway.
Hm.
Why, something bothering you about it?
I love his explanation about who they get to commentate:
Which means it isn't, as I suspected a rights issue, apparently they are allowed to play Murray and Martin from the ITV years. But essentially what this is saying is that somebody somewhere in the BBC has put a "No James Allen" clause in!
Haha! Excellent point, Alex! :D
Heh :)
Now, I dare you to point that out in their comments. ;)
In other news... I've already done 41 pages today... I have been steaming ahead :) I wonder how many more I can achieve this afternoon?
I don't know. He has nothing to do with this year's championship and his recovery is sort of a private thing and belongs more in one of Ferrari's own press conferences rather than the official FIA one. *shrugs* I'm weird :)
All we need now is for somebody to add a "No Legard" clause :)
Given that Legard was at 5Live for much of Allen's stint at ITV, it's probably gonna end up one or the other most of the time. Who would you choose? :)
Done.
James Allen any day.
Mr Allen must be either really happy or really bitter that everyone moaned about his commentating until they heard Legard :)
Nice. Now let's see if the others catch on to it.
:)
He probably doesn't mind too much - he has another gig now, anyways. :D
I'd mind.
BBC needed a film trailer for legard really..
"In a world where his commentating is criticised... James Allen stands defiant, and carries on his job...
...until one day... the BBC get the rights... And a new commentator rises from the shadows to procliam his place as..
...F1's Most Annoying Commentator..."
Coming soon to imaginations worldwide
Bitter I guess... I've always had a bit of a soft spot for James because it must have been a nightmare for him following Murray. However, on the other hand, he did come out with some absolute tosh!
I still think about that strange commentary about how he said, you won't know what all that G-force of going around a corner feels like, but it is the equivalent of having a Labrador on a leed, which is attached to your head and is running away.
James I don't know what that feels like either! :)
Well, I think our own Steve Slater might just beat Legard as Most Annoying, but I see your point. :D
:)
Best analogy ever, with Brundle's "nailing jelly to a wall" a close second.
Perhaps we should make that our next character cup :)
I also love Brundle's hug the corner like it's your favourite granny.
Ooooh - I like it!
Take a look at what I call:
Gillett's Last Stand
But this sounds exactly like what he had planned to do before. What makes him think it'll work this time?
Are there 16 commentators?
I'm not sure. Off the top of my head, I can think of Steve Slater (SE Asia), James Allen and Jonathan Legard (UK), Kai Ebel (Germany), Galvao Bueno (Brazil), Bob Varsha (US)... and that's it. I'm sure there are equivalents in France, Spain, Italy, and Japan.
Very well done! I won't need to shoo you today then. More importantly, what nationality is the French character at the moment?
And you can also include David Croft, David Hobbs, and others if you're running short on people. ;)
Croftie FTW!
I don't suppose it would be a fair cup, as I've only ever heard three of the commentators you mentioned.
Why bother showing it? Most people probably still have some sort of recording of it?
Good question... Still French I think. The thing is that at the end of the writing I didn't know/remember that they were French. The question now is there a conflict in the story. So I have to note down any reference in case I need to change them.
I don't want to stay here anymore. My parents are making me get up at 6am!
That is quite early. I hope they have a good reason?
what???
Interesting. So you do want them to be French?
i think murray may walk that.
as is Lewis. I guess they are hoping for some interesting comments about Singapore and its effect on last year's championship.
We are going to a memorial garden to spread my grandads ashes, but it's not like he'll notice if we turn up around noon.
but... he's not driving?
:D :D :D :D
Slater would beat anybody by big margin :-)
I wonder why they have drivers on both days rather than drivers on Thursday and boring team people on Friday.
... Alex Yoong , Karun Chandhok :-)
Why does it matter to yuor parents to get there early?
oh I just noticed they have boring team people with the drivers. Ignore me.
we have to drive an hour and a half to get there, but I think its more for my aunty's sake because shes a crazy early morning person. But I'm not!
The problem is that most people voting may not have experienced half of those ... are we going to have to source clips or something?
I would rather they were French because I like they way they are introduced and I'd have to change that. But we haven't got to a longer piece of their back story yet and changing all of that will be a lot more annoying. But I don't know if I need to yet.
but they're analysts, not commentators. otherwise, i'd have included Chris Goodwin, Martin Brundle, James Hunt, Rene Arnoux, Niki Lauda...
That can be done. :)
Ah photoshop. It's timeslike these I wish I knew a hollywood film director.
You think Murray will walk the Most Annoying commentator cup?
Some people have said that Murray was annoying though?
Just throw in some references to the Eiffel Tower, you'll be fine ;)
I would like to vote for Cam + Rusty :D
Argh... must remember the link...
Oops, I said Croftie FTW too. In my head I turned into a Best commentator cup!
not in this deep a field! :D
I think James Allen was better than Legard. There, I said it!
ahh. i may have picked the thread up half way though.
we don't do negative stuff like that. so it would have to be best commentator cup. and thus murray will walk it.
My fault. I changed it to be positive without telling anyone :)
awww... but that would be boring! :P but yeah, murray would walk it easily in that case.
AHAHA! :D
as you should. we're not spending two weeks slagging people off.
two hours on a sunday evening is enough ;)
It's nice that you turned a negative to a positive!
Hehehe.
I would also like to nominate Rust for most annoying English language website fail
for the line
"He?s a respected name in broadcasting circles and a sort after corporate host"
Wearing a beret might be easier. ;-)
Agreed. I just thought it was funny!
Mav! I should be around tonight. :D w00t, back to the quiz!
Good idea :)
Me too :)
Anyone disagree? Or has JA's blog just converted us a little bit?
Excellente!
I agree - at least JA's analysis added value to the conversation - and it seems that he got Martin to talk more too.
Just a thought... Perhaps this is too UK centric though... But to get the 16 couldn't we do a comparison last year to this across all of the roles for character cup?
1. Legard
2. Brundle
3. Kravitz
4. Humphries
5. Coulthard
6. Jordan
7. McKenzie
8. Croft
9. Davidson
10. Samos
11. Allen
12. Ryder
13. Blunder
And for the last 3 I guess Muzza, Maurice Hamilton, Jim Rosenthal!!, etc, etc... Something like that seems interesting to me :)
I liked the labrador analogy. It was Python-esque.
i disagree. james allen should never been allowed to broadcast on tv. the producer should have pulled him after race one.
legard should never have been recalled. again this is the fault of the people in charge not the individuals.
My extra 3 would be Walker, Hunt, and Rosenthal.
But see, now you're making Mr C choose between Ted and Croftie.
But comparing the two directly?
but we're just choosing between allen and legard here... ideally, we'd have neither.
Thatrs why it will be more fun :)
what about Louise "cooking with Heikki" Goodman
I'm all for it, just to see which way he goes. I bet he goes for Ted.
:D I wonder who I'd drop to get her in, though...
neither should be on tv, end of story.
both have severe difficulties in the box, and i could tear them to pieces criticism by criticism if you like, but it makes no odds. the don't need to improve, they need to go do something else.
which james almost did, until he appeared in the press conferences
last night i had to abstain from the lost character cup, because i couldn't decide.
You big wimp.
I agree with Mr C!
They even had adequate testing time with James because Murray didn't go to all of the races in his last year.
The biggest problem with James was that he had a lot of pre-prepared material that he felt he needed to shoehorn in. This was probably the journalist in him. It meant that he would often not interrupt himself on a story even when the turning point of a race might be happening right in front of him. A big overtake could be happening and he could be telling us an "interesting" story about driving into the circuit. Or in front of him cars might be blocking each other in qualifying and he could be reminding us for the umpteenth time about how all of the drivers times are reset in the third session.
you can't make me choose!
Ah yes. I thought of Lou before I started.
Jim Rosental should be dropped I reckon.
I'm not gonna make you, I'm gonna laugh at you.
yup. he had no confident to ad-lib. he could only really do improv at the start and end of the races, because he knew they were sure to happen.
:)
It's like me trying to DJ ramp into songs. Not good.
:D
he would be my choice because I don't think I've even ever seen any F1 coverage he was on :D
Alll correct, but at least he talked and got excited - unlike Legard, who is a great cure for insomnia.
For the last race as an experiment, I was listening to Crofty and put Legard on in the background. There are gaps of whole sentences from Crofty before Legard says anything!
I am not a Legard fan but I get the feeling that he doesn't annoy me as much as he does some of you. It seems he makes mistakes like all commentators do and he gets jumped all over because people already dislike him, whereas other commentators get their errors laughed off.
mistakes don't bug me. it's the fact he doesn't tell me anything that i cannot see with my own eyes.
"oh, oh, oh, something's happened..."
thanks for that.
At least he confirmed that DNF does, in fact, mean did not finish
I still listen to him all the time, not because of him you understand, but because Martin and Ted seem to be so on the money. My problem is that I prefer Martin commentating to Legards but he shouldn't have to, he should be able to go back to what he knows best which is analysis. I know he hasn't been in a car as recently as Davidson. But Martin's reading of the race is really strong.
He's doing an old style radio commentary. The delicate balancing act of Crofty and Ant is for them to describe what's happening for those only listening on radio, and that it doesn't annoy you when you have the pictures too.
And P.S. means post script.
oh yes, that is why I am not a fan. But if he does something like say 'we are onboard with such and such' before the name comes on screen because he hasn't recognised the helmet he gets abused for 'oh man that was so obviously such and such, I can't believe he doesn't know which helmet goes with who at this late stage of the season' but I've heard Croftie do it too and no one mentions it.
Fair point. But it is amazing for me that when you listen to 5 live during the race and then switch to the forum, the highlights they show with Leg and MB depict a very different race!
I can't stress enough how boring I find him, and I honestly don't like being criticial of things of he just does grind my gears with his commentary style. Like I said yesterday, with Radio 5 not working for Singapore, his combination with Singapore's desperate lull in racing action was just... it made me a very sleepy F1 fan :(
very good point.
Anyways, it's dinnertime, and I'm super hungry, and it's a lovely day outside, so a walk to a certain bakery is in order ;)
And people love Murray, and one of Murray's stock phrases was, "would you look at that...". Which isn't that far away from that Legard phrase.
The difference is, everyone makes mistakes, everyone misses things, everyone needs a second to compose themselves live like that.
But what you need to do is build up a stock of goodwill before then so people give you the benefit of the doubt.
one of my defining moments of the season, will be skipping back and forth of the sutil/heidfeld incident in singapore to figure out what happened and who was in the wrong. it took maybe three minutes to get it straight in my head and then be able to explain it to christine.
when done i turned up the volume to here how tv had called it (always watch highlights with legard on mute) and discovered brundle called it perfectly as the incident onfolded live on track. he is very good, i agree.
however, i shouldn't have to watch highlights on mute in the first place.
murray was old. i don't think brundle or davidson or croftie need that extra time.
i do, but then i'm not on tv.
Hello! joes book arrived this morning, but not the one i was expecting to get here first...
Its awesome, and huge, but unfortunatly for some its probably not something which would be worth getting on an e-reader...
I also may have unearthed toyotas secret f1 driver training programme? http://kotaku.com/5381077/how-does-this-young-race-car-driver-train-no-pants-alert
Yes... Give me Croft, Brudle and Ted and I'll be happy. Ant can go and drive for one of the teams and then take over from Martin when he retires.
seconded.
On the comentators: they are all pretty bad, but at least they like the sport.
The wost thing the BBC could do would be to bring in one of those F1 hating guys who do sportscars or the like.
I would take passion over ability anyday
I mean every so often. It happens to them all. Maybe once ever few races. Seems to happen to Legard about once every five minutes.
everything is worth getting on an e-reader!
Legard doesn't even do that. He had me in stitches one race where he ran down the starting grid without allowing for the late change in the starting order and therefore talking about completely the wrong drivers.
Anyone like to guess how much data I used in France on Monday? I just got the bill.
ooops.... erm. Yes. well the lovely colour illustrations are kind of key and they might loose something ;)
ohhh you mean the encylopaedia one. Yes, that makes sense. I thought you meant Saboteurs :D
That is a stupidly low table!
MWM did the commentary for Brazil 08 and it was brilliant.
They don't hate F1, I think you have the wrong idea - they just like poking fun at it!
That was dispatched first but still hasnt got here which is odd.
The Atlas was a bargain at 1p. There really is no excuse not to buy it at that price...
Ah i've just got the iPhone software update... Hopefully this patch will sort the wifi issues... Haven't looked into the release notes yet though.
I am guessing... a lot!
I'll wait until it comes for free with my Corn Flakes ;-)
Do let me know ... I have held off until tonight!
I'll give you a range... It was more than 1 megabyte and less than 100.
99!
Is this for 3.1.2? What were your wifi issues?
86.
Mainly they were Gavin's. But I've had similar problems connecting to wireless open access points.
There are loads - the wifi signal isn't received as well and it's more difficult to log on to public wifi hubs...
I think that you are giving them too much credit. look at that guys blog on ted and how great the speed tv coverage is.
I think the attention F1 gets annoys them, and they try to take it out on the sport.
It could be interesting, it would probably be better, but i think we would miss the passion
The former has definitely improved for me with this patch. The latter I haven't had a chance to try yet.
I have 1p! It's on the drop somewhere.
Well I will try it tonight and tell you by tomorrow what happens ;)
I think you are being too harsh on them - they don't have to cover F1, but they do. Just because the guy prefers Speed to BBC doesn't mean they are rubbish!
There are also at least 4 Arabic comentators, I would imagine at least 2 chinese guys, Guile was saying they have 3 argentinian guys. not to mention each scandinavien country, setanta....
Did you try to explain that it isnt a real time?
I told them its like 4am to me so thats just mean, I didn't tell them I'm normally up at 4am.
79mb
The answer was, by the way, a shockingly low 15.3 Mb!
May I ask how much that cost?
Wow... faier enough!
They're getting their own back for those sleepless nights and early mornings. Deal with it.

...just wait until he convinces them he needs an audio feed instead of text updates...
Are you staying up for it? :P
ouch!
I screamed every night until I was 4, apparently :D
Doesn't seem so bad. You wouldn't want to do that for more than a day though!!
Ah, just reminiscing the character cup. Loved every minute of it.
Just realised that with the addition of Kobayashi, there have been 25 drivers this season which makes a return of the Character Cup a little mathematically tricky.
Indeed we need a 26th driver at the next race :D
The Hulk might solve that in Abu Dhabi
Not if he wants to drive a car with an engine!
di Grassi please.
Just remembered... Have you called anyone a ferry today amy? :P
You need a league stage of 5 groups with the winners and 3 best runners up progressing to a knock-out stage. Err... it's confused me already...
Yesterday I asked my brother what time he had to catch the ferry at Christmas and how long the ferry trip takes :D
No fairys today though. Perhaps a bare bear drinking beer? (its the same word, seriously)
 You need to do some instructional clips on "how to speak like a new cylinder" :D
three different people today told me I have picked up an Australian accent, but only on a couple of words. "Yeah" seems to be the main culprit.
i think they are good at what they do. which is sports car and specifically endurance commentary.
they're used to talking for hours and hours and hours. a short f1 race would confuse them. they'd have another 9 hours of material.
Blimey, Fisi finally got married this weekend. He took his time.
Look who's still hanging around:
N. Technology and the FIA
I was just reading that myself. That's been kept fairly quiet hasn't it?
Virgin Media Sport also running a special Twitter competition with Jenson Button.
Although I do think Jenson would be better off answering them himself on his Twitter profile...
Actually, I think GMM have that slightly wrong (yes. really.) They've had the hearing, or it's in progress. The court are going to make a decision on November 10th.
love the url: football.virginmedia.com
Afternoon all
Indeed. I guess it wasn't making news, and no one was talking. The way I see it, if any of the new teams suddenly buy themselves out of their Cossie deals to run different engines (possibly Lotus or USF1 with Toyota), that might significantly weaken N. Tech's case.
Oops. :D
football.virginmedia.com/page/Motorsport love it
Oh please don't tell me he's gonna lose a helmet too
No, no, you get to ask him questions.
has someone found "Nico"s?
It's accidently swapped with a football.
Yup, it has winners already.
Phew! Lou should enter, although I'm not sure if they can replace asking questions with squeaking and laughing in sheer excitement ;)
thank god.
USF1 tried that... Max and bernie started off a load of rumours they wont be there next year...
Who hates cognitive theories?
I do!!
I hate it so much I don't know what it is!!!
Who says they won't do it anyway? Lotus is also a possible.
Woooo!!
Today in Industry skills i learnt about Marshalling, i love it so darn much
My goodness, your course is to die for. Taking this course so far seems to somewhere in your list of best decisions ever.
Before November 10th?
I suppose Max will be out of the way after next week. We might even see wholesale dumping of Cosworth if Ari is chosen.
Fact
When they brought in the ex-cosworth guy the rumours suddenly stopped.
I can see them changing for 2011, but with a spare place on the grid, i cant see anyone jepardising there spots.
But if Ari wins, they could. I would say that would put an expiry date on Bernie too.
I wouldn't say wholesale (Cossies are cheap, after all), but we may see a couple drop it.
Somehow, I have this very small voice in me telling me that just like Max before him, Ari could easily transform into an evil menace. I don't wanna listen to it, but it just keeps telling me it could happen...
Small Voice? Is EJ speaking to you again?
Totally. Be we KNOW Jean Todt will (already has?) so what have we got to lose?
Todt seems to be more sure of what he's talking about than Ari. I wouldn't say more capable, but he seems to have more of a grasp of the situation.
I could easily be misreading this, but that's what I'm getting.
:D
My staple diet has now become waffles and gnocci....mmmm :)
That's a strange mix - and a motherlode of carbs!
Am not eating till 7, so i shall need them. And need copious amounts of energy to be able to stay awake in..."The logistics of referencing" at 3
Go for it! I advise against Red Bull though - you will be too fidgety!
Second Saward book of the day just arrived! http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/imag0069
I agree. He's still a jerk though.
Oh goodness... pay very close attention and write down eveything they tell you.
It will save you so much time and endless headaches later!
Not sure if i've had red bull before, but when i think about having some i always get a taste in my mouth that i dont like, which probably means that ive had it before and dont like it
Sabatours scares me.....why is there a swastika on it?
If this were our first, or even second referencing lecture then i would, but this is our 3rd so it's getting a bit boring
Its explaining why you should...Its set in World War 2!
I wish i had had 3!
"The Grand Prix Saboteurs is the remarkable true story of how three motor racing stars of the 1920s and 1930s worked together as British secret agents during World War II in Occupied France."
hmmm, am sure there are other things that could have been put on it to show it was about that period...
Best.quote.ever
"Piagets workon children's intellectual development owed much to his early studies of water snails"
:D
i would say, because he can, and because a major publisher wouldn't.
Characters from Allo Allo?
oh yeah, its the self published one isnt it? i understand why he'd do it, i'd just have put another picture on it
Dont think any would be quite as effective as a swasticker though?
The Swastika is not as scary as the first two sentences.
Indeed
It is a classic and identifiable symbol - you show that, everyone knows what you are talking about.
Note how the swastika appears to cast a shadow over the vintage racing car - implying that the drivers were having to do something beyond their normal duties as their world was influenced by the occupation of Nazi forces...
Even if that atlas of motor racing is outdated, it would still be interesting as a 'snapshot'...
Am not saying it's wrong to put it, it just surprised me, but i havent read the book so am sure it's alot to do with that.
Actually, the picture says to me it's a book about the Nazi funding of the Mercedes and Auto Union teams.
The title says it's about Flavio and Piquet.
:D
Heres a pic of a typical page in the atlas. http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/imag0070 (sorry the drop keeps rotating them)
It has amazing ilustrations.
I paticularly like the way he began the entry for this one "Dictators are obviously good for motor racing, if for nothing else"
Nice duvet ;)
Hehe, i decided the spare room would probably be the brightest place to take the pics ;)
Afternoon all.
It's definitely one of the best books ever written about motor racing, and why no major publisher picked up on it eludes me. Mind you, in self-publishing Joe will see more profit from it than if he had gone through someone like Haynes.
Once, in a pre-Christmas issue of a certain MAGAZINE, I populated a largely made-up letters page with actors from that show. One reader noticed.
:D
Not much racing in winter, no? :D
He might get it published by a major outlet.
EA are making a game which seems to be massivly influenced if not actually based on it
I guess the benefit of hiring a publisher to do it for you is they can get your book to a lot more shelves. But hey, perhaps his book will become a collectors item someday. :D
#MFC Google Building Maker... Neat crowdsourcing idea...
http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/10/introducing-google-building-maker.html
You can help turn the 2d images into 3d images for your fun and Google's profit ;)
Kindle version please Joe. #boycottingpaper
can you self publish to the kindle? haven't looked into it, but i like the idea.
It's not particularly about motor racing really though.
indeed.
https://dtp.amazon.com/mn/signin
Indeed, but the penalty is that the author doesn't get paid very much. The only way to make a living out of it, if you were to choose to do so, is to churn 'em out. That's why most motor racing books are either labours of love or shameless hackery.
nice. will suggest that to him, unless anyone fancies commenting it first.
Amazon only give the author 35% of the price when a sale is made, which doesn't sound like much to me, but then again I don't know how much an author gets from a real book.
I saw a tweet of someone hoping it's Williams-Cosworth next season.
What, not Renault?? :D
They give me less from my book sales on Amazon, or rather let me be clearer here.
Amazon takes 60% of the published price on my book. Leaving my publisher and I to split the difference how we see fit. Not very many publishers will give their authors 50:50 splits. But that's what I get from Lulu. So the best an author is likely to get from selling a paper book on Amazon is 20%. So this is a good deal.
Are you sure you arent on twitter?
Indeed I'm not. :D
You seem to want to be! :P
heres one I prepared earlier ;)
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/dsc07023-jpg
If you Kindleise your books in future I promise to buy. But I'd buy them in paper too. #notboycottinggiggles
That's quite interesting, but I've got a sort of mental block about e-books.
It varies. You usually get an advance, plus a cut of royalties depending on how many they are going to print (which in turn depends on how many they expect to sell). Typical motor racing book probably gets the author between £3K and £6K in advance on a print run of 6000. If they end up reprinting, you will get royalties of one or two percent.
Obviously the JK Rowlings and Dan Browns of this world get a lot more.
:D Thats a personal favourite!
It did 32 GPs? Did it run in 91 or 93 then?
The picture says 1992. ;) It's a B-version of the 1991 car.
#Guilt ~ Still havent finished his book
#confidential #notforgiigleseyes
I didn't see nuffink!
I know its the 92 car!
so they count its a-spec in the number of races?
my brother said out of all the cars in the room, its the only one he would associate straight away with a specific driver. He said the other ones would make you go 'thats a Ferrari' 'thats a McLaren' but that one makes you go 'thats Mansell's car'
Very good point - and I'd agree.
#guilt me neither, but I am reading 7 books at the same time so none of them will be done anytime soon. I do like that I can pick it up and read one or two stories at a time though.
That or they're counting each race in 1992 twice - two cars each.
the MP4-21 made me go 'thats Kimis car pretending to be Lewis's'
Im on 4 as long as i dont open the saboteurs.
You didnt take any on the plane?
Ah true
nope, my plane plans were solely transcribing and I didn't want any other distractions :D
I'm reading 4, a report on nightclubs and just ordered Martin Hines's new book, i figure if he's coming to be interviewed here then i should know something about him ;)
Oh dear...
Teachers pet :P
They didn't count http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/dsc07043-jpg twice, I shall have to look at photos of the other cars and see if they are being consistent.
I find I am a bad podcast listener because I tend to tune out and not take in all the information. Transcribing makes me have to listen so I quite enjoy all the new stuff I learn :D
So how are books priced on the Kindle? The same as they are in print?
cheaper. There seems to be an ongoing campaign from the Kindle obsessed where they will not pay more than $9.99 for a Kindle book, and if the print editions are cheaper than that, they expect the Kindle one to be 20% cheaper again.
Can you tell I have been browsing the Kindle forums? Some people on there are a little crazy.
So my book is £10 on Amazon UK, so I'm thinking £5?
Can you all do me a favour...i've booked up an interview with Sebastian Hohenthal on Tuesday....could you write any questions you'd want me to ask him, it really can be anything, if you could label them #jon or something that would be appreciated.
No, I think counting the A-spec version is more likely, but that's the only other reason i can think of.
my maths is not even going to try because its 3am but I'd say price it at whatever price enables you to make at least the same money and see what happens :D
Don't know if it's still there, but the review of it by his ex-wife on Amazon made for hilarious reading.
He's already got us doing his coursework? Shocking! ;-)
Shall go searching
here is a post on some dudes experience self publishing.
It'll benefit all listeners of hte feeder seires too :P
I don't know who he is but I assume with a name like that he will be in a Red Bull car one day.
Right, i have to go out, and wont be back to talk after as im going to Oxford to see Ron Dennis! should be good, will let you all know how it goes!!
Peace out!
He's a formula two driver :P
Interesting... So maybe I should go for rock bottom pricing?
tell him to sign Kimi
he sold you a dummy if he convinced you woking is in oxford.
Remember to ask him how he feels Martinspeak is coming along!
you're going to need to explain who he is?
It is in Ronspeak
#jon What is it like to have a name that rhymes with Jim Rosenthal?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sebastian_Hohenthal
Amy, do you normally get the cover in the download for Kindle?
Swedish F2 driver. Seems to have had a decent enough career to date.
Hi all.
There are hundreds of people out there who will buy any cheap book so it seems to be a good way to get initial sales. I'll probably be one of those people too haha. Anything posted on a thread like this seems to help.
#jon Do you think F2 can rival GP2 as the main step towards F1?
ah cool. i have no further questions, your honour.
yes, a 16-shade-of-grey version :D
I have already purchased 3 books even though I said I would only read free public domain books at first, and it hasn't even shipped yet, so I can see myself spending a lot more on ebooks than paper.
#jon Something about Henry Surtees' accident and the effects it had on F2? Is F2 safe enough? etc etc.
Very interesting. At some point a PR strategy will come into it, because authors will have to differentiate their product – otherwise it will just become a race to see who can charge the least.
As can be seen with the examples of GP Week and GP+ (one of which usually languishes unread before being deleted, while the other has a smaller distribution but is actually read), if you give stuff away for free then people will grab it but not necessarily value it or even read it. And after all, if people end up not reading your work, then they won't consume any more (unless you give it away for free).
#jon How would he rank all the various junior series in order?
Indeed. Placing a value on something is important. You are in effect saying, "this is worth x". Many of the short stories are available for free on my blog, but in earlier edits, some of the stories span multiple posts. And you have to wade through the other posts to get to the good stuff. So saying here is my book it's worth £10 seemed a fair way to go: it is still available on Amazon Stuart ;) http://thebookwiththemissingfirstpage.co.uk
interesting point. although gave up with gpweek because they kept putting bikes on the cover.
could it not be down to niche markets? gp+ is pretty much f1 and only f1, which is where my interest lies. the reason i don't have a permanent subscription to RCE is that it's not always about f1. i'd like to think i'd pay more for a more focussed effort.
in a similar vein i wouldn't mind being able to hide bikes from autosport's homepage, just because it adds noise.
If it helps i generaly dont buy books which have a normal price of less than £4.99
Jacques Villeneuve news, as im sure you've all been dying to hear, from his twitter - Hi everyone, sorry I have not had much to say lol..working on "something!" ..u will be the FIRST to know if I can find something fun for 2010
Hes going to buy a boat!
It's funny because I wouldn't either because at that price I would assume it was rubbish. But for some reason when its not physical it seems the total opposite, I'm more likely to buy it because its cheap and if its rubbish I can just delete it and pretend it never happened, and if its great I can go and hunt down more from the author.
From one of Amy's links... There is a Margaret Atwood book (former Booker Prize winner) for sale for $3.95 on Kindle. The pricing model seems a bit different on Kindle.
I will peruse your work and see if this is true!
As a PS – postscript – to that (sorry! couldn't resist)...
This isn't just true in the digital world. Mrs C has yet to read Gorbachev's memoirs, which she obtained for 10p while working at Waterstone's, while I have yet to get past the second chapter of Tom Wolfe's A Man In Full, which I bought from remaindered stock in 1999...
That would effect me because a book by Margaret Atwood sounds really boring...
A book by Alex Andronov on the other hand...
Merci :)
Things i have learned from Joes Book: Estoril and Barcelona's circuits are very similar in shape
#Atlas
Do you know Margaret Atwood or are you just going from the name?
Completly by name.
I sdont judge books by cover because that would require me to pull the book off the shelf.
Names are much easier to select reading material ;)
I note that your book doesnt have your name on the spine.
Its a bit of a gamble...
Funnily enough her covers would probably put you off too. She's a mainstream author who is desperately trying to hide the fact that she essentially writes quite a lot of Science Fiction.
One of her books is called The Blind Assassin.
I think it was too long ;)
I am intriued, but her name still puts me off...
I don't think I knew people existed who judge books by the authors name :D
intrigued
I am not here but I thought I should post a little sidepodspace update.
The space shuttle Atlantis is being moved up to the launch pad now. NASA TV are covering it but it is not worth watching unless you have never seen how they move the shuttles before. It's very Thunderbirds except it takes 6 hours insted of 6 seconds.
It is due to launch between the 9th and 12th of November. I assume they are moving it to the pad now so they can get the next shuttle into the Vehicle Assembly Building
You should try it!
I discovered one of my favourite books "Signal & Noise", because it was witten by a guy called John Griesemer.
What I don't understand is why the Kindle application for iPhone isn't out yet?
In the uk...
That pretty much sums up all of NASA, doesn't it?
From above, yes, but topographically they're different. Estoril curves down and then rises back up near the end of the lap (hence that silly chicane, introduced so errant F1 cars didn't end up in somebody's garden). Barcelona goes up, has a dip in the middle, comes back up again and then down.
can you download the US version?
they will probably wait until the uk kindle has been out for a while as it might canibalise sales?
The shuttle is standing on end and has to travel a few miles so it has to be slow. It could be their motto though.
Ah thats interesting.
Have you seen Ahvenisto in Finland? The illustration makes it look amazing
Wasn't there a film starring Rutger Hauer featuring something similar?
A bit too squiggly for my taste, but it looks interesting.
So without a US postal address and US bank account you can't sell things on the Kindle.
#MFC Amazon fail
Is the pit area between turns 2 and 3?
Have you tried Amazon.co.uk?
Amazon failed the minute they rushed out a non-UK Kindle in the UK.
Yup
Ahh.
This is not possible. I just had a flashback as to why I wasn't selling my book on the kindle in the first place!
It appears to be! sketch isnt all that cleer in the book
Intresting way of doing it, is there any rule that says the pit area has to be next to the start/finish line?
Loving the top 6 in that first race.

As of today:
Rain unlikely for Friday
Rain possible for Saturday
Rain probable for Sunday
I use the factbyte factbox for my weather ;)
Doohickey man here. :D
:D
either way, there will be rain at some point.
Fact for the weekend: Interlagos used to be insanely long. Old: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Interlagos_1979.jpg
Comparison: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Interlagosoverlay.jpg
It appears it could also be run as a sort of extended oval with a link at the bottom of the hill
Indeed. If you can find an overhead photo (there's one in the race preview in a certain MAGAZINE this week) you can follow the line of the original circuit, pretty much. The present layout carries traffic in the opposite direction to where it flowed in the old at certain points.
They used to run the GP over the longer track just like they used to use the longer version of Spa or the Nurburgring
Attention Sidepodpeople!
I have set up a Private Game of BATRacer for all who wish to join up!
Linkage: http://batracer.com/-cj?&D&47600
Alternatively, you can select "private games" from the menu and enter the number "47600" into the box. The game password is "podf1". Take care not to accidentally join a public game by mistake.
All abilities are welcome.. and its a F1 2009 game... sign up quick before your favourite team gets filled!!
Indeed - Nick's overlay pic shows that pretty well.
oooooh... tempting... haven't done BATracer for a while
Indeed. It hasn't been mentioned here for a while.
Hehe good pluggage, but without a link, you are not quite at Alex's leval yet.
The fact i thought of it the same week that autosport decided to put in a photo illustrating my point clearly indicates they should employ me ;)
What is BAT racer?
I dont own a bat, how do i take part?
If I were said mag, I'd be more impressed if you showed us something we haven't thought of before. ;)
So you can think of things they have already done?
Fancied being a Ferrari :D
Well when i said NASCAR should buy F1 from CVC everyone thought i was nuts!
NASCAR might buy the IMS though, if what Joe is saying is true...
I think I may join you at ferrari if thats alright?
Its a fun* F1 racing browser based sim, I believe there were a few sidepodchampionships in the past... Sign up and see! Its something to keep busy with in the off season!
(* - some participants may find it frustrating and annoying at first... )
Sure :)
Interesting that IMS is valued at £600 million. That's the same amount Tony George is supposed to have blown on the IRL
I have signed up. No idea what i am doing though!
Hmmm... I wonder if buying one will get you the other for kicks...
$600million is ridiculous. there is no way it is worth that much
If it does Nascar could develop it into an international challenger for F1
The IMS? Indy 500 + NASCAR = lotsa money.
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/BATRacer+Guide
:D
they'd pick IndyCar over NASCAR? no way.
To play, oooooooooh, go on then.
I have a muse helmet! hurrah!
Much less risk a- alienating their fanbase b-being accepted as a top line motorsport.
They can then piggyback in stocks when it gains traction
Interesting. when do i do all this?
Right now the game is waiting to be started either when we have 20 drivers or the minimum required. From then every 24 hours either qualifying or the race will take place with practice and warmup inbetween. Use practice to setup the car using the adivce from the engineer and the wiki, wait for qualifying refine the setup in warmup (you get one lap) and then wait for the race. The race itself you can go through lap by lap to see how you fair against everyone else.
Hope that helped a bit, any questions just ask. There is a driver chat in the game (Office > Driver chat) probably best to ask there :)
Nick, once you realise how it runs then it's a lot easier and less daunting than it seems trust me!
Ok! let me know when i need to start doing things and i will be on it!
http://FAIL
I didn't realise they were annoying!
Like I said just ask, I play BatRacer probably a little too much. :)
Me neither, but I also didn't know why they were there.
True. They are more annoying now I know they are unnecessary. Mr B-L should have kept quiet :)
Forgive me, that should be Sir B-L.
Now I see it, I can't unsee it. :(
Definatly! finding out www was unnecessary was one thing because it inst that essential. now i will never write a web address without grumbling!
nah. i like them. they make the web a little more intimidating. make it too easy and every dailymirror reader will be able to figure it out.
Autosport didnt quite convey how drastic donningotns task is, there is a write up on it in the times. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/formula_1/article6874477.ece#cid=OTC-RSS&attr=796995
they need to sell nearly £20million in bonds per day!
I think he originally said that there didn't need to be two of them.
This has also prompted Ken Thomson to admit that he should have included a second e in creat() in Unix :)
Although alex did tell me a story about a guy that might have the technique to do it :D
mailto syntax is a good example of how it probably should've been. i still like them though.
Bernie needs to pull the plug before this clown gets himself into serious trouble. Even if he raises the money which he won't he has to pay £20 million a year in interest. Where is that meant to come from? The only way this is going to work is if he hires Derran Brown and gives him a percentage.
The podcast awards nominations are open. Just saying.
http://www.podcastawards.com/
I have nominated sidepodcast in the sport category. Get nominating people
Done!
Steven, where it says URL, do I put the website address or do I have to find the one for the actual podcast? Sorry to be thick
I just put sidepodcast.com
Thanks
I should say I haven't read the instructions but I am sure it will be OK
Just don't vote for them in two categories or the vote won't count.
I think you can vote for them as Peoples Choice or Best Produced and then one other category but only one other
There was an awards thing before where you could nominate in several categories. I don't know if it was the same one. Someone eventually will read the rules
Anyway, all done, took me a while to decide for some of the other categories though ;)
I think that track is available for rFactor?
The old track is available on rFactor - insanely fast and very long!
hehe. you guys are ace. if i recall last year we didn't make the nominations, but scott had a lot of fun berating the organiser in the chat room for missing us out ;)
Jean Todt has written a letter to club members saying that Vatanan’s cause lacks any real plans and ambition. Charming! {Original entry}
If Ari's cause lacks plans and ambition, then words fail to describe the lack of either Jean has so far presented. His idea seems to be to do a few cosmetic changes and otherwise continue as before - not an option in 21st-century motoring.
Ahhhh, I remember that! I think you woke me up for it.
Hah. I would give you a job. I only have 20 days until I’m off and away though so I think I’ll make it. {Comment #43}
I've got 13 days, but they're not consecutive so I'm not sure they count! Can't take any of them off though because I'm covering for someone on holiday and making my placement substitute a substitute seems a tad unfair.
I have no memory of that
Lotus have a model of next years car. http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/79430
STILL no FOM race edit – and it’s almost been a week since the onboard went up. What’s the hold-up? {Comment #78}
Struggling to find 10 minutes of edit-worthy racing?
I preferred Manor's mix of black car with black background
Also Q&A with Mike Gascoyne http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/79431
No drivers yet.
Vey high flat nose with narrow struts.
If they race that in Aus it will be coming in for a nose change on the end of lap 1
I assume they have to wait till all the top seats are filled before they can sign drivers.
Can williams get cosworths next year?
I thought they would struggle to supply 4 teams. but 5?
Indeed, but they are look at Malaysian drivers and I wasn't aware there were any. From what he has suggested I'd have though Heidfeld would ideal.
What about Trulli or Glock?
Bahrain!
Didn't we say that about the 09 cars anyways?
The original plan was for Cosworth to supply 5 teams. Manufacturing engines should not be a big deal.
Also i havent seen Alianora on here or twitter for a while, is she away? {Comment #161}
I was on the internet a little bit on Monday (including the moderated comments mentioned by me), but I was a bit ill yesterday and went straight to bed after placement and college.
I've been on Twitter most days, but because of the peculiarities of Twitter and the fact that most of my Twitter stream consists of replies to other people, you might not have seen much activity there.
I've got a four-day-a-week placement for the next three-and-a-half months (covering for someone on holiday) and thus I may not be on the internet as much as usual.
business model = more the merrier.
Alex Yoong is probably the only one with a superlicense unles Fairuz Fauzy qualifies for one.
I thought that, but the lack of rookies and a certain driver probably helped.
With all the new guys at the back of the field i would be building it like a brawn rather than an even more dainty version of a newey design
we did. nothing happened.
I read somewhere that they were going tobe flat out to do 3...
The extra personell they will need to send to all the teams to run more cars could be a problem though?
Possibly but they risk over expansion. if the engines start going pop they could really be in trouble
didn't joe say there were plenty of engine people around? i'd 99.9% confident that they'l be fine.
There have to be a few available Toyota, Renault or BMW engine people they can get
Wont they all need to be retrained though?
I was thinking it would be more about time and capacity?
Does anyone know if the toyota guys at williams were there working for cosworth before?
how is it possible that the OWG haven't been disbanded yet?
"But McLaren engineering director Paddy Lowe, part of the Overtaking Working Group, sees an alternative solution."
also:
"One of three lead members of the OWG"
did they replace pat? or have the forgotten he's been banned, just like they forgot to improve overtaking?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/8307309.stm
Has this been talked about? - Paddy Lowe suggests track changes rather than car changes
...well that was odd.
:)
OK talk about passing the buck!
Weren't the Tilke Identikit rings all supposed to have loads of overtaking opportunities?
i swear max said if things didn't improve he'd fire the lot of them.
That interview makes him sound really stupid. He thinks the changes have not been a huge failure. They have Paddy. They bombed.
He now wants to make all corners overtaking zones. That is what you would expect from a 6 year old who didn't realise that meant scrapping every circuit in the world and start again.
I am sure Tilke will blame the cars
Ah the hermann tilke method. Blindfold, spin about 5 times, and draw on a piece of paper.
Foolproof.
apparently him and martin have been chatting though. sounds like they'd got it all figured out.
Beyond having minimum track widths though chicanes there is only so much which could be done.
What happened to the split rear wing? surely thats worth a go?
They will probably decide that all tracks should be circular so that there are no corners where you can't overtake.
Well that won't work - the IRL have had rubbish races on ovals this year!
14 October, 2009, Oxford, UK. Williams F1 today confirmed that its engine partnership with Toyota will cease at the end of 2009. {Comment #222}
So Toyota will only supply itself in 2010. I would be interested to see if Williams have opted for a Cosworth (if so, expect it to play "FIA-aligned privateer" to the hilt) or whether it's managed to swing itself a manufacturer supply of some sort.
it was never meant for f1 in the first place. doomed to failure.
Banning chicanes would be a good start. Monza used to be famous for lots of overtaking then they put chicanes in and the overtaking stopped.
That was a really stupid idea. If you look at all the publicity they put out about it they said that one car could follow behind another and then overtake. Th trouble is if you look at it you soon realise that only works on a straight but not in corners. In corners you get loads of dirty air like you get now.
I would suggest Williams will run Cosworths because they seem to make a lot of decisions that the FIA would like them too these days!
I agree nut no-one would be able to point at a corner and say there had been no overtaking at it.
this seals it for Nakajima {Comment #227}
Unfortunately :( I think he's a good driver who just struggled to get to grips with this year's Williams in the way Nico has to such devastating effect. He might have had a chance at Toyota but Kobayashi's effectively frog-leaped him in the Toyota development programme with his Japanese performance.
The other thing I have just realised about Paddy Lowe's interview is he needs a driver to identify corners you can overtake at. Surely by now he can figure that out himself
they do don't they. hmm.
is it any wonder the '09 regs failed?
Force India News, Simon Roberts has been gone back to McLaren and have been replaced by someone formally from Honda.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/79432
"He has spent this season working on an official Formula 1 iPhone application and has been a regular in the paddock."
oh noes! what might that mean?
It does make you wonder. They spent all that time looking at the cars and writing a set of regs with more holes in it than a case of polo mints and now he thinks the tracks may be something to do with it. Getting people from the teams to do it was guaranteed to fail but this is ridiculous.
He thinks it won’t sell – it might even struggle to get published. Very surprising opinion for me, but there ya go. {Comment #246}
If Max wrote his book the way he does some of his speeches, I can see why a publisher wouldn't touch it with a ten-foot bargepole. Especially as some of them either own or are good friends with journalistic outlets that Max has upset over the years!
Should Max get it published, then I think it could sell well even outside the motorsport fraternity* - if it was written the way the public wanted. The hagiography that Max would likely write and want published would not. Murray Walker's and Jackie Stewart's books sold well when most of the rest of the genre hasn't because they were, engrossing stories written with verve and honesty (that they're better-recognised names than most helped as well - Max is well-remembered too, if for the wrong reasons). This may also explain why comedians do well - they're used to expressing themselves with verve and honesty in their day jobs, so they tend to transfer that to paper even if their stories would be as dull as dishwater in other hands.
* - The motorsport sector is so small that anything short of total saturation, on its own, does not constitute "selling well" by the definition of most publishers. Either there must be interest from outside the sector or there must be some reason why all or nearly all of the motorsport sector will want a copy of the book.
That is bad news for Force India. Martin Whitmarsh didn't go to talk to them just because one person was leaving the team. I assume Brawn are going to get the partner deal FIF1 had.
*imagines Max as a TV comedian* {Comment #247}
I thought he already was - his famously unsuccessful attempts to justify the FIA's stance on Alonso's "blocking" penalty in the face of Martin Brundle was hilarious...
agreed. the thing is, all the team bosses agreed to let him have a go. and even paid him to have a go. i can't work out who's dumber... him, max, or those who listened to max and paid paddy?
you could say we're on a road to nowhere...
Do you know how long that song will be in my head for now? :(
*hums theme tune*
I think I'm just psychically picking up other people's comments before I comment tonight
Just a thought – if they get 5Live commentary for Brazil 2003, it would probably have been Legard on the mic. {Comment #250}
I wonder how that would have compared to the ITV version? I am willing to wait for the answer to be revealed in 12/24 months time (depending on what order they decide to tackle the large number of other races people want featured), especially since I already have a copy of the 2003 race to keep me amused in the interim.
It says something good about Interlagos that the BBC had this predicament though - it produces good racing :)
That is bad news for Force India. Martin Whitmarsh didn’t go to talk to them just because one person was leaving the team. I assume Brawn are going to get the partner deal FIF1 had. {Comment #721}
This just totally ruined my evening :( Losing Simon Roberts, who's clearly been a good factory manager from the way the factory has responded to 2009's various challengers, is bad enough...
Why is Massa in the Friday FIA press conference? {Comment #260}
Because the FIA can summon any F1 personality for the purpose and enforce that for anyone with a licence (either directly or through a third party, which in Felipe's case applies both ways) for the Friday press conference. This is as distinct from the Thursday one, which is for drivers only. At least the FIA waited until Brazil, when Felipe wouldn't have far to go to get to the media centre...
If Kobiashi cant perfom this weekend as the evidence of all the replacement drivers this year suggest he wont do, h could risk his chance for a drive there next year. i cant remember his laptimes from last week? I suspect he will be a seccond off of his relative pace this weekend as he wont know the track any where near as well as he knew suzuka
But this sounds exactly like what he [Gillet] had planned to do before. What makes him think it’ll work this time? {Comment #287}
By the sound of it, he's managed to get a bank to agree, which will surely help ;)
I believe there are technical differences between bonds (current plan) and indentures (previous plan), but you'd probably need to be in the finance industry to fully understand them.
Wasnt the previous plan debentures?
That relied on selling people sort of a ong term season ticket over 10 years or so, a bit like they have done at wembley.
You buy your seat or box, and for any event held at the venue you can use it, (with some exceptions)
Bonds are a financial instrument. a bit like giving someone a loan.
Evening folks :)
There was a debenture plan
Is your watch working?
I don't have a watch :(
I thought it may be 5 hours fast today
Make a paper mache one?
Heehee! And I have tomorrow off!! I'm not sure what's going on....
How are you going to cope with a day off?
Is someone sliding towards a new job? http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/c/chester/8299012.stm
If it makes you feel better, I'm still going to be very busy!
Us non-league fans are doing fine without him.
evening guys and girls.
good evening!
My feet are so sore, I actually can't stand up anymore.
than sit down then! ;)
Stand on tiptoes?
Get your feet up ready for Michel
Why have they got it on every day?
:D :D
Pure awesomness! It's not normally on Fridays.
Remember, PF quiz tonight, with a good host this time ;)
*remembers the lists*
if its anything like last week i dont think there will be many takers!
I thought it was once a week?
evening everyone :)
No! There have been 5 a week. 2 on Wednesday with none on Friday.
evening :) how is lou this evening?
i'm alright thanks, cold but alright :)
Happy Belated Birthday Lou!!
anyone need tickets to that free McLaren thing on the 8th November?
didn't know there was one. what's it all about?
aw thank you Alison :)

http://www2.mercedes-benz.co.uk/content/unitedkingdom/mpc/mpc_unitedkingdom_website/en/home_mpc/MBWorldBrooklands/home/whats_on/powered_by_mercedes-benz.html
Hi Lou and Jackie
I am really tempted to go, i arive at 6am on the 8th
Do you need tickets?
I have been awarded tickets but I have to let them know before Friday how many I want, max of 3 guests + me
ahh, cool. brawn will be there? had no idea.
Hi Steven and Lou
I remember people talking about this before. I remember Bassano being convinced it meant that Kimi =/= McLaren.
It's a Mercedes thing rather than directly McLaren by the look.
well have 3 spaces if interested
Ant will be driving the BG P00 1 ? will that be his first go in it?
I wonder if that will be effected if he signs for virgin?
i wouldn't want to take them off of anyone else, but if all you have to do is tell them today, then i'd suggest you tell them you would like x4 :)
Too much food.
Have to tell them by Friday or they will give to someone else, I'll see if there are takers tonight and confirm tomorrow
wow! Davidson AND Mr Brawn AND the Brawn CAR!, plus others :P sounds like an amazing day tbh :) lucky you ;)
I am up for going!
I live quite close, have registered on that site if it helps
Come along Lou :D
well if you're left with any, christine and i would happily accompany you. but we wouldn't want to deny lou he chance to see a brawn.
I will ask for the 4 tickets then and see who wants to come
Right I'm off quizzing since Mav is hosting .. email me if you want one xxx
I want one!
i've no idea what i'm doing on the 8th though, i'd love to come, however i couldn't possibly know now if i'm free or not :(
:D .. yay
Well if anyone decides to do anything you can tell them you are booked!
Do i still have to e-mail? ;)
English exam the next day. Perhaps not.
How can you pass up a chance like this?
Nope
Can i try and headping journeyer as he is missing the Quiz...
JOURNEYER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ahah have just spoken to dad who is doing some business with some of the more important people in Mercedes... he says he'll see if he can get a ticket for me (that way Mr and Mrs C can go too!)
i would register on that site too, just to be on the safe side ;)
done and done :)
Hello :)
Hey Scott.
You still play batracer? Cos there is a new game going around somewhere in the daily.
Not these days, no. But if you can persuade me...
DO IT
that work? :P
How about "If you don't do it, I'll..."

There's no indication which do their own work and which shoehorn another broadcaster's feed, but probably each station has at least one local commentator to supplement the shoehorned commentator(s).
* - I'm not sure whether these are just different versions of the same feed or not (if they are, then they'll have the same commentators). Clusters of stations grouped together without asterixes almost certainly are the same feed at different timings and therefore are extremely likely to use the same commentator(s)
Even with the above provisos, I make that 61 distinct broadcasters of F1 and therefore at least 61 different commentator crews. Plenty to go round a one-year (or even three-year) highlights package... ...though whether we understand half of the results is another matter entirely!
Um... ...sorry for the above very lengthy comment; it got slightly out of hand...
*sheepish*
Spot the difference to those who wanna do it
http://i34.tinypic.com/2aep0jr.png
The NZ and Danish commentators are never at the track. The NZ feed is just the flag-to-flag TV Pics with BBC commentators (I think)
Possibly the weirdest thing I have ever seen
It worked... 20 minutes late. :D No matter, I've long since caught up.
Works better with the link

quick heads-up. probs going to break spc temporarily. nothing to see as yet, fingers crossed by this weekend though. keep commenting, should only be minor glitches.
Should I break out the Emergency no-sidepodcast survival kit out?
what does that contain?
How will we know?
What carset?
Water, a blanket, pillows and a cuddly panda.
good question. the point of the comment was... i don't need to know if you can't comment in the short term, try again in a second, and don't automatically blame mediatemple (although it could be just as likely to be them).
awww!
no milky bar?
You are going to break the site on a race weekend when you have just been nominated for an award?
Classic f1 on the red button freeview now, yay! an hour of f1 before I get to bed!
That needs to be a wiki page.
i have 4... can't find the 5th..
or cupcakes?
or unnamed energy drink?
nope. i'm going to break the site now. in order that we can improve our race weekend efficiency. the new code is going up tonight. the changes will be visible over the course of the weekend.
:P
Basic survival kits for under a fiver. I believe there is more in the twenty quid kit.
OK. I didn't think you would do it during a race
can't survive without caffeine :)
quick heads-up. probs going to break spc temporarily. nothing to see as yet, fingers crossed by this weekend though. keep commenting, should only be minor glitches. {Comment #811}
My internet connection's broken twice this evening already, so I probably won't notice the difference...
lord no. it's now or the same time next week, and the updates will help us.
sidepodcast has been nominated for an award? how much did i miss over the last few days??
#sidepodspace
The shuttle Atlantis made it all the way to the launch pad. It's actually been there for hours but I forgot about it
Anyone can nominate so get nominating. I nominated sidepodcast for sport but you can add other categories if you like. All the people who were around earlier nominated too.
http://www.podcastawards.com/
Thank goodness your not in charge of the mission then! :P
Looking at the rules you can nominate in either people's choice or best produced but not both and in one other category
If I was in charge I would not use crawlers that take hours to get there. i would put it on a rocket sled with some jet packs and get it there in 20 seconds. Make a spectacle and cover it properly. You may write of a few shuttels perfecting it but no-one would die of boredom. How NASA make space travel so dull is beyond me.

have voted!
Evening and night everyone :)
Blimey, Fisi finally got married this weekend. He took his time. {Comment #434}
Well, I suppose there's no point rushing a good thing, and given what I've read Giancarlo and Luna's relationship, there was never any serious risk of either of them marrying anyone else...
If anyone's interested, there is a bunch of photos of the wedding on the Fisichella Forum.
Hi/bye
Who hates cognitive theories? {Comment #452}
I enjoy cognitive theories - not that any of them seem to apply to me, but can't blame the academics for trying...
Evening and night everyone {Comment #840}
Goodnight, Alex!
Knight!
Somehow, I have this very small voice in me telling me that just like Max before him, Ari could easily transform into an evil menace. I don’t wanna listen to it, but it just keeps telling me it could happen… {Comment #461}
Given the infrastructure at the FIA, anyone taking the presidency could turn into an evil menace. The difference is that in Ari's case, there's half a chance he will dismantle enough of it that he doesn't get turned from his high-minded ideals...
Small Voice? Is EJ speaking to you again? {Comment #462}
I don't think EJ does small voices - only rather large ones...

That sounds like something out of an information management degree...
Max to be all over the place with the fia involving himself in everything after his presidency ends: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/79434
Hmmmm. No wonder it's so quite.
If it helps i generaly dont buy books which have a normal price of less than £4.99 {Comment #566}
I can rarely find books with a normal price of less than £4.99, unless they're old editions of fantasy/sci-fi books (which pre-dated the collapse of the Net Book Agreemnt) or Mr. Messy's Guide to Student Life. Even books that are so bad I wouldn't even bother checking them out of a library seem to have an RRP of at least £6.99 these days.
That said, it's rare I buy any book at retail value. The exceptions are books that are presents, Formula 1 Yearbooks and the very occasional F1 book that refuses to drop in price and I absolutely have to have...
Look what Mr C made!!

The real beauty lies in the fact that we don't have to manually update it, but looooook.
Classic Sidepodcast. Love it.
Lacks the vintage brown though.
Max to be all over the place with the fia involving himself in everything after his presidency ends: {Comment #849}
Predictable. We should have known he wouldn't just drop all power and read a good book on the beach (as I read in an interview a few years back he likes to do when he's got a few days off)...
oooh that is really cool....
But it could make it even easier to find the first show ;)
Hehe. Not the finished design, obviously.
Looks nice
I thought he was going to be busy writing his own book
Oh is that all he's been doing? ;-)
Very cool. Should he get an extra nomination for this?
I can see him lying back with a bit of Sun Tzu :P
Jacques Villeneuve news, as im sure you’ve all been dying to hear, from his twitter – Hi everyone,sorry I have not had much to say lol..working on “something!” ..u will be the FIRST to know if I can find something fun for 2010 {Comment #567}
Is there a FIRST team in existence/about to be launched?
hehe. at some point we'll detail just how much work christine has put into manually updating the archives. this should help a lot.
still more updates to come over the weekend.
I thought he was going to be busy writing his own book {Comment #858}
With technology as it is, Max could write his book at the beach with whatever his current reading book is at his side if felt like it...
I think its time that playground moved inside - I keep forgetting about it.
Technology? Is that what they call ghost writers now? ;-)
it's linked on the homepage, but that is the ultimate plan, yup.
and then the next version of spc moves to the playground and we start all over agin.
What do you guys do in your spare time?
Wikipedia: cut and paste
This. Sidepodcast is our hobby.
Wikipedia? Not the News of the World then?
hehe. I forgot the ;-) at the end....
Of course, we are redefining the word hobby all the time.
It must be more than that!
It would probably be less work keeping a pet shark!
:D Why does work keep getting in the way?
she's not having one.
I can see him lying back with a bit of Sun Tzu :P {Comment #860}
That sounds right up his street, though according to the interview in question he'd also read about volcanoes and Winston Churchill during his summer reading...
(Annoyingly, I can't find the interview, but I remember it was in an off-season edition of F1 Racing, 2005/2006 vintage, with Peter Windsor doing the interviewing).
So true. Speaking of which, I'm off. Early starts and all that.
Whoa, I wonder what Amy thinks of the rumored Barnes & Nobel ebook reader.
Nice.
Night.
What if it was kept in the kitchen sink? you couldnt see it then :D
You don't need to plant several square miles of bamboo if you get here a shark
Churchill was his mother's cousin
Technology? Is that what they call ghost writers now? {Comment #865}
No - it's what they call portable electronic devices and wind-up battery chargers. I typed a lot of my NaNoWriMo novel last year while nowhere near a source of electricity on my PDA and there's no reason why Max couldn't do likewise.
A ghost writer is, of course, another option...
Churchill was his mother’s cousin {Comment #882}
And probably the only person on the planet who was friends with both him and Hitler simultaneously...
His mother's sister was Hitler's mistress and shot herself in the head in a park in Mucnich with a gun Hitler gave her when her cousin declared war on her boyfriend. In most families that would make her the weirdo.
:P
Funnily enough her covers would probably put you off too. She’s a mainstream author who is desperately trying to hide the fact that she essentially writes quite a lot of Science Fiction. {Comment #579}
She essentially writes science fiction? Maybe I should give one of her books a try then (I always thought she was plain mainstream, which completely put me off reading her!)
I almost had a pet shark once, but settled on a lionfish (amongst others)

Kobayashi knows Suzuka like the back of his hand. He's never been to Interlagos though and he should have a 10-place grid penalty hampering him.
Intresting way of doing it, is there any rule that says the pit area has to be next to the start/finish line? {Comment #603}
No. The start/finish line can be absolutely anywhere in relation to the pit area - even ten miles away if the circuit designers felt like it.
But Force India have said "Simon will return to McLaren Applied Technologies to take up a senior management role and will continue his involvement with Force India from the other side of the partnership." That doesn't sound like a dead partnership.

Why would Kobayashi have a 10-place penalty? Is he using a ninth engine? I don't think Glock was carrying any penalties over from qualifying and he certainly didn't net any in the race...
It doesn't but why would Whitmarsh go speak to a whole company about one man being removed and if nothing is really changing why is he not being replaced by another McLaren man.
oooooh… tempting… haven’t done BATracer for a while {Comment #614}
Have they fixed the problem whereby the game refuses to load once the season is half-done? If not, I'm not going to play because it wastes everyone's time when the bug strikes my game (as it has on three previous occasions).
my theory is whitmarsh wants to show his face there so FI feel more involved with Macca than mercedes. If they develop their own engines, they will likely want to have a customer to help finance it....
Maybe he means he'll be slowing everyone down or something?
But on that, good night all. Remember, my turn to host the quiz next week, all questions from 2000 onwards. Get revising on you know who
Isnt that half the fun :P
hahahahaha. FiF1 help finance something? AHAHAHAHAA. :D
:D
night rg.

It does seem a bit strange, but let's wait and see what actually happens. There may turn out to be a rational alternative explanation, though not replacing with either a McLaren or Mercedes man does seem strange under the circumstances. Did the ex-Honda person work at Mercedes before the Honda stint?
Night Roland ;)
The engines could be part of what they were doing
Night RG
Isnt that half the fun {Comment #897}
Not when it leaves everyone in the lurch, no (when the bug struck in the past, the only solution was to leave the entire login fallow for at least six weeks).
I am sure he was in F1 before he was with Honda but I hav no idea who with
Ahhh, thanks Nick, I now have an idea of how to hide my name on Batracer
Goodnight, RG.
Including the loan of a McLaren man was always an odd part of the agreement. It seemed unnecessary.
He must be back in Martin's good books? :-)
Yeah he did a good job and now McLaren want him back ;)
Roland Grosjean? :P
Even better :D
Glock took a 9th engine after crashing. However, by not starting the race it hasn't left the pitlane yet so the stewards should give the car a grid penalty. It has been noted in the technical report.
wow. good spot sir.
Indeed, but they are look at Malaysian drivers and I wasn’t aware there were any {Comment #680}
Two words: Fairuz Fauzy. All I really know about him is that Eddie Jordan told everyone in early 2003 that he was the bee's knees... ...and then didn't hire him at any point prior to selling his team!
Was he his manager?
I actually thought Toyota had got away with the penalty by having it in japan but then remembered it had to leave the pitlane first.

Understood, Maverick - thank you very much :) . So Kamui might as well skip qualifying?
actually, I wouldn't be surprised if the stewards forget in brazil. the stewards report says they gave glock a 10-place penalty in japan - which they shouldn't have done as it hasn't left the pitlane.
I think he's going to need as much track time as he can get
He'll be aiming for pole to minimise the damage! ;-)
Alex Yoong is probably the only one with a superlicense unles Fairuz Fauzy qualifies for one. {Comment #687)
Alex hasn't automatically qualified for a superlicence since late 2005 (there's a three-year time limit on validity of F1 experience) and I don't think Fairuz has yet performed well enough to get such an exemption.
Given enough winter miles, either could theoretically get permission via the FIA's committees.
Was he his manager? {Comment #915}
No - Eddie stopped officially managing people at the end of 1991 and the last driver to be unofficially managed by him, Jean Alesi, retired over a year before Eddie mentioned Fairuz's name. Which made the utterance even stranger; the sort of thing only explicable by Eddie being Eddie.
the stewards report says they gave glock a 10-place penalty in japan – which they shouldn’t have done as it hasn’t left the pitlane. {Comment #918}
They were correct to give the penalty in Japan because the penalty applies the first time an engine is used irrespective of other penalties. It simply hasn't been applied yet because the engine hasn't technically been used yet.
Of course, Toyota can change the engine to an old one between then and the start of Friday and skip the penalty that way. However the ninth engine would then be unusuable for the remainder of that weekend, leaving the risk of a 10-place penalty for engine #10 in Brazil and another 10-place drop for engine #9 in Abu Dhabi.
That leaves the strange possibility of them being punished for their 10th engine without ever using a 9th!
i can't believe people prefer nascar to f1, i really can't!
Hello there,
Am liking the sleeker Desktop Doohickey Mr C
huh?
It looks different, has numbers too
oh right. your style sheet didn't load correctly. quit and try again.
haven't touched it, honest.
But i like it
hehe. in that case carry on :)
Why have "Lotus" ripped off Toyota of all cars? http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/79430
And why do they need such huge sidepods, are they already expecting major cooling problems?
I predict Lots Of Trouble, Usually Serious
Maybe it's so Trulli will settle in quickly?
I've never noticed the phrase filter on the doohickey before. Sexy.
And comes in very handy for finding or omitting stuff
and live commenting ;)
It doesnt look very big
I doubt he would fit in it...
Fancy an onboard lap around Abu Dhabi?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikvjwBEYk50
I love you
xx
Those tight corners don't feel right without claustrophobic buildings right up to the track.
There is water the other side of a lot of them.
Hopefuylly stuff will be built around them quicly. It should look good in 2-3 years time.
I love it now anyway!
speedmerchantsmedia, is that related to james allen's site?
You do have slightly rose tinted spectacles sir ;)
James posted it on his blog today didn't he?
Not that I go there anymore, oh no
haven;t checked. i don't read blogs, i rely on doohickey for salient information.
I cant help it if it is the most bestest track ever to exist can I now!!!!
just checked it was him. He has a world first because he is on good terms with the people there...
That pitlane exit is insane. Could be very exciting in the race!
I know that it is probably a journo in the back (JA?) so Bruno will be taking it a bit easier but Monaco and Singapore feel fast because the walls are centimetres away from the tyres all the time, the open feel doesn't do Yas Marina any favours.
He was taking that really slowly. Almost like he was parking on the turn in to get the camera shots. It will look a lot faster when they go out for real
Morning :)
I need to be somewhere at 10.15 and really should be getting up but I'm enjoying the early morning not at work thing too much!
