Monday is over and done with then, so we're onto Tuesday. Things are ramping up towards Brazil as teams start releasing their preview press releases and we start looking at the weather forecasts. Here are some of the things we're talking about:
- Donington Park has been given yet another extension to try and prove they can host the race. I can't imagine why, as Bernie has already been quoted as saying it's never going to happen (or words to that effect). When will they admit that it was a foolish idea from the start?
- Massa has had a go in the F2007 finally, and whilst there are plenty of disagreements in the comments over whether it should have been allowed in the first place, Massa says he's perfectly comfortable back behind the wheel, almost as if nothing had happened.
- I posted the first of our look at the championship contenders yesterday, starting with Vettel. If you've got thoughts about his season so far, his chances for the title, and where he can go from here, then head on over and post your comments.
That'll do it for now, I reckon. Let us know what you're up to today, although you'll have to go some to beat Alex's impromptu trip to Paris and Lou's 18th birthday yesterday. I'll see you in the comments.
Seems we have a new day
..already..
No, just tomorrow
Hullo!
Evening
hi
Howdey!
Does anyone know how long Amy's flight takes? She has been AWOL for a while
She's changing at Aukland or Wellington isn't she?
She mentioned Te Papa museum which is in Wellington so not sure if she's stopping there for a day or so
4 hours give or take i would guess...
Hello new daily (and Bassano)
No idea. She live commented her journey to the airport and dropioed her breakfast but that was a while ago
Hey Alison
I was going to whinge about having a long day then i decided I should just deal with it, not being as long as it could've been
Think she is also going via Christchurch, I remember it being quite convoluted
Awwww hehehe this seems a lot worse because I've only been doing half time for a few weeks leading up to it. Other people are allowed to whine. I'm just melodramatic.
Good to see you on saturday, sorry i dashed off!
Lou is going to join us next time...
If it's any consolation, I have a heap of management assessment type rrrrrubish to do by Friday, everyone else is half way through it
You too, knew you'd have a late one [I can sense these things ;)]
Cool, go Lou!
I should have stayed... it was silly, i genuinely thought i would be going home...
Ah, the optimism of youth. I remember those days. A pub's magnetic field gets stronger as the years move on
For those interested in HD, this post has a couple of screengrabs showing the new HD onboard cameras broadcasting HD on japanese TV http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/showpost.php?p=35879673&postcount=2330
Whilst it's a definite improvement over the old example shown, doesn't look very HD really. Crappy screen-grab maybe
You know those songs you find on You Tube, and it's an amazing version, then you look on Amazon and itunes and you cant find the same version? i have that issue. booo
Could be a live or bootleg version
What is it Jon?
Nope it sounds like it's in a studio, it may be a cover.
Hahaha, you will have never heard of it ever. Fact
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjkBVn_eUec
Alta Vista allows an MP3 search, if that helps
wow! awesome ta!
I haven't seen anyone mention altavista in years let alone recommend it. I feel like I have been transported back to the 90s
It still exists!
Is that Hillsong as in Western Sydney, Hills district?
could be, there's lots of different Hillsongs now
That would make it harder to track down
Very much so!
My sources say it's Disc 1, track 5
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Best-Worship-Songs-Ever-Various-Artists/dp/B0001FUIRE
Yes. That's where the original church was. They have many now all over the world. A lot of people get very upset about them though. They're a pretty controversial church.
In what way?
Flipping heck!! That makes you very impressive sir!
you're looking at interlaced footage on a progressive screen.
they look pretty stuning to me.
My ex-GF's family come from the Hills district. Though as Irish Catholics, I think they might have been there first
Ah, ok
The first time I have heard the old 'i' and 'p' in a useful sentence
As I remember it, there were a lot of accusations of embezzlement a few years ago. A lot of people think they do a lot of things as a money making exercise rather than for evangelism or whatever.
Check it out first
:D
I guarantee the folk in Currys don't have a Scooby
thats amazing! it's totally the right version and everything!
thank you :)
Also they were fairly famously accused of rigging Australian Idol. Which I found hillarious.
haha, that is amusing
Ooooh see I knew I wasn't making it up. Their wikipedia page has a controversies section......
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hillsong#Criticism_and_controversy
It's Katherine Scott and also on here
http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?id=7019291&s=143444
Takes a bow
yeah that what i'm downloading :)
thank you!!
Anytime Sir
Sidepodcast knows all - FACT!
except how to colour frames ;) but i've been pointed in the direction of someone who does know, so all is well
in html? i can help.
All you need is a brush and some paint! ;)
:D
oh my goodness!!! YEYYY
yeah in html, i've got the right coding, but it just wont work and i cant work out why
do you have a sample? are you using css to colour?
I'm by no means an expert but something would suggest that maybe it's not quite right...... :P
pah ;)
i've discovered what my issue was.....but im not telling as it's a bit embaressing ;)
however i have a new one!! ill drop.io it to explain
it was the 'u' right?
I'm in a very good mood now. I have more masterchef to watch :P
I could talk for days about all the embarrassing/stupid coding mistakes I've made.
If only all the alcohol hadn't washed it all away.
i have found a useful feature in snow leopard. it can preview collada .dae files by default.
took me a good few hours to find one mind you.
oh no, but that stupid spelling does annoy me.
I have never known anyone so happy to watch bad cooking
you know that it will only give you a masterchef hang over though
Just don't login to your guest account ;)
So it was worth the upgrade
:D :D
<3 Michel
Or if you do, don't log out
i heard that :P
i'm sure one i'll appreciate it.
But he is not even in half the program
ok so you may not be able to see the difference...but im trying to make the area between frames the colour inside hte frame...so it's all one continuous block of colour...
this one has the frames as 0 and so they are white
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/feeder1-jpg
thisone has the frames as 1 and coloured so that they are the hexidecimal colour shade ive told it to be
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/feeder-jpg-2
I feel I have to point out that I don't find him in the slightest bit attractive! His eyes are too big for his face.
So what makes the program so attractive then?
sounds like you need to set something like:
frameborder="0" framespacing="0"
it just comes out as the same as the picture with the white gap
have you added that to all frameset and frame tags? you could also add:
border="0"
although that shouldn't be needed.
OH MY GOODNESS!!!
IT WORKS!!! (i tried it in a different place) 8-)
too cool. thank yoooou
Next!
:D
thats what i did, i had it only on hte frame tags before :)
How do i get rid of the line under the links?
My turn
So, I have this commercial jet aircraft...
:P :P
Is it a Lear jet?
in your css code block, add the following declaration:
a { text-decoration: none; }
Pah! That's but a bubble car in comparison
thankk yoooou :) i also found a bit of flashy code (it's flashy to me atleast) that changes the colour of hte text when you go over it
I am watching the Hubble program Bassano mentioned last night. Lots of good stuff in it.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0074rkg/Hubble_Telescope/
I got distracted by the Darwin thing with Richard Dawkins, I think I chose the wrong channel
You should make heavy use of the "blink" tag as well. People love that one
:D
i shall try it
oooh yes. and marquee.
what does it do?
"I like blinking, I do"
bah?
proper code for each please :)
:D :D :D
heeh!
I watched some of that too
I wanted more Darwin, less creationism bashing
Makes stuff blink
You have to expect that from him.
Apparently there are huge amounts of alcohol floating about in space. There has to be a business in that somewhere
It did seem a tad biased.
I was especially amused when he muted people he was interviewing and did a voice over untill they said something he could mock!
Yeah, I guess so
Didn't realise it was him until the programme began
What's the title of the program?
The Genius of Charles Darwin
I didn't know th Milky Way was on a crash course with Andromeda. Apparently the two galaxies are closing on each other at half a million miles an hour
Space needs a pit lane
I think it needs a highway code to stop all the collisions
What different programs do people use to subscribe to podcasts?
My current site lists;
itunes, zune, podnova, newsgator, netvibes, page flakes, my yahoo and google reader
as possible ones to subscribe using...these surely all arent used? is it wor putting them all on my new site anyway?
Does this disprove the big bang theory?
No. It's just the effect of gravity. Space is full of things crashing into other things from bits of dust to galaxies. Space is still expanding so the big bang theory still holds. It's just that when something gets caught up in the gravity field of something else there is a chance they will collide
I don't use it but I believe Juice is popular too
Hubble has also captured a few images of Galaxies colliding and or interacting: http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2008/04/when-galaxies-c/
How do two bodies which were propelled outwards with an enertia suddenly decide to converge when they should not be loosing momentum and getting further apart?
ta
Because the whole time that they have been heading outwards they have been reacting with other bodies. So small galaxies collide to make bigger ones or they get caught up in the gravitational field and get a slongshot that sends them on a different course.
Question to all;
If i was to host audio on one site, but link it from another, would the site that the link it's on get that audio added to it's bandwidth? (if that makes sense)
As a guess I would say iTunes & Google Reader
Can you put a poll on your site?
I sort of get what you are saying, but it requires the big bang to be an imperfect explosion, which would appear to be odd
can do i guess, at the moment theres only rss and itunes, i guess it's easy to add the rss to whatever program your using? i'll stick with google, juice, itunes and rss because it fits nicely on hte page, but will put if there are more feed listeners people use then will add them
What explosions are perfect?
nope.
oops. comment fail. twas i.
I am not certain it does. Effectively what we are talking about is innumerable radom collisions and interactions.
If it is creating all matter and happening in an enviroment with nothing to effect it... why wouldnt it be perfect?
...unless the galaxy's are moving for another reason...
so basicially sidepodcast gets little (or alot lower) bandwidth, and mediatemple (who i assume is where you store all the podcasts, if not then work with me on this ;) ) has the huge bandwidth?
But what would cause the randomness?

Any one of thousands of things. For ecample just before the big bang you have all the matter in the universe in an infinitesimal volume. Regardles how perfect the explosion the collisions and interactions between all the bits of matter are going to cause random collisions. You have electrical, gravitational, thermal, magnetic, explosive etc etc effects.
umm no. there is only sidepodcast.com, there is no separate mediatemple site. they just keep the servers running (occasionally). we aren't a great example though because we have CDN's and Torrent servers and all sorts of stuff thrown into the mix.
what are you trying to fathom out?
Ah, I gettcha.
But what created the previous matter?
basically....
i'm moving all my stuff over to podcast machine, and will pay them as and when i need extra bandwidth....
what im currently doing is making this new website and will host it using one of those subdomain accounts and then redirect it using dot.tk like ive been doing....problem is the free accounts usually have lower bandwidth...so im wondering....
if i listened to a podcast on the new website, would the bandwidth usage be taken out of just the podcast machine bandwidth, or that and the website hosting?
This conversation ends with "it's turtles all the way down"
IIUC, when the big bang happened, it hydrogen, deuterium, and Helium (Mostly hydrogen) formed quickly after. These elements combined to form stars and the stars going nova created all the other elements.
There's a nice big bang timeline here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graphical_timeline_of_the_Big_Bang
if you are using subdomains then you only pay for the bandwidth once. so let's assume:
- example.com = your website hosted on free account
- podcast.example.com = you podcast hosted on podcast account
if the html on example.com links to podcast.example.com, it sends the browser off to the podcast subdomain and waves goodbye to that call. example.com has no idea how big the file on podcast.example.com is because it can't see it, so you won't get charged for it.
that help at all?
i think so...
so what your saying is....when i click on "listen", it's only putting bandwidth on the podcast host, not the website itself?
I get the creation afterwards... but i dont understand how the matter there before was created... it is mysterious!
My theory and it is one that is getting some traction with people who actually know what there are talking about is that the big bang wasn't the big bang it was the big bounce.
Just before the big bang you had an infinite(effectively) amount of matter in an infinitesimal volume and therefore at ultimate density. Common sense says that can only exist for an infinitesimal amount of time so either the matter just popped into existence or it was somewhere else first. Logically what happened is that all the matter we know about existed previously in a more normal volume and was compressed into the small volume presumably by a huge (in mass terms) black hole.
So imagine that the universe expands until it runs out of energy and then contracts to the infinitesimal volume. You get a new big bang and it all starts all over again.
bingo.
Ayone interested in space stuff should watch this http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0074rkg/Hubble_Telescope/
awesome. thanks for all your help :) you is a great chappy!
and looking at the time has answered my "should i go for an early morning bike ride today" question!
Thanks for a good evening!
Night all
If you're talking about before the big bang, head on up to Mr. Hawking's place and have a chat with him :)
See ya Jon
Night Jon
But wouldnt that create a perfect explosion?
I understand what you are saying, and this may be where the turtles come in... but doesnt this theory raise the question of what caused the bouncing to start?
Night
I don't even have a wild guess at a theory of how time began and where all the stuff in the universe came from.
I guess it is a bit like the meaning of life... Or an episode of LOST...
The deeper you go to answer the question, the more complex it gets
A creator maybe? I shall depart on that note, otherwise i'll be here for years
I know how MrC loves his playground... I found some competition!
http://www.mentalfloss.com/blogs/archives/34277
The further back you go the less information you have to base a hypothesis on and the less likely it is that the rules we currently understand apply thereby further diluting the chances of getting it right.
Definitely not. The logic behind a creator baffles me. Things that exist like people are too complex therefore they have to be created. So where did the creator come from? Who made it?
Shall attempt a relatively early night
Cheerio
Isnt that true of the present too though. If you cant understand the cause, maybe its because you cant see all that is really happening?
Why does everything have to be made? Things can just be there, existing
i has landed!
Whoo... Does it taste of kiwi fruits?
yay!
Night Bassano
That's one of the reasons there are a lot of unknowns. Scientists rarely say something is factual. What they say is this is the current hypothesis and until we can disprove it we will believe that it is accurate.
They have to come from somewhere in the first place.
I didn't realise your flight took so long. I was worried that you may be swimming by now
We think they do, but they don't.
We can't get our minds round infinite things, it's just how we are as humans
That doesnt seem logical to me... but i guess there is only so much you can do.
Still seems like a waste of good scientists to use them on hypothesis when there is so much we know that could be worked on
Science is about working on stuff that we don't know.
There are two approacehes you can take to that. The religious one which says its too complicated so we shouldn't try or the scientific one which says lets find out. It's like the old question about how do you eat an elephant. One bite at a time. We are going to have to eat a lot more elephant before we get a grasp on time, the universe and everything.
Of course, and i think it's nieve to think that anyone who's even a bit 'religious' just thinks its too complicated and so should try. I think it's amazing what we know, and what we keep finding out, but i don't think they'll ever come a day when we know all the answers.
Everything is hypothesis and attempting to disprove it from fundamental principals to feveloping medecines or anything else. You seek to understand how the flu affects the body, form a hypothesis from your evidence and try to disprove the hypothesis. Eventually if you get things right you get a cure with no side effects.
Analysis, hypothesis and attempt to disprove the hypothesis is the basic principal on which all science is based.
Thats what i call phillosophy!
For me science is based on what we know and where we can take it, develop it, use it, know more.
Take alchemy... There was no reason why it should work in existing knowledge, but still many great scientests including newton devoted hours working on it.
If he had been doing science instead, we might live in a very different world.
In any case, i must sleep... I will comment watch from bed for a bit, but i may nod off
And with that we'd go nowhere. No computers, no medicine, no physics, no biology, nothing. We didn't know that Germs caused diseases. Good thing we didn't "stick to what we knew"
And Newton WAS doing science. His three laws of motion are quite important to physics. They just didn't know enough at the time to know that Alchemy wasn't going to go anywhere, but they had to try to figure it out.
I really don't want to get into religion because it is divisive but few things have done more to hold back human understanding. Leonardo da Vinci was banned by the church from dissecting bodies because what happens inside a body is God's work and not for us to know. As a result a vast amount of his work was burned. He had figured out blood circulation and had designed an artificial heart valve that is almost identical to those that exist today. How many more people would not have died needlessly if he had been allowed to continue and people had been allowed access to his work? How much farther on would human knowledge be today?
I doubt we will ever know all the answers but we have to keep looking for more knowledge. If we had not understood that dinosaurs existed and when they existed there would be people who still think the world is 6000 years old. If we didn't know what killed the dinosaurs we would not be scanning space looking for rocks that would eventually do the same to us.
The more we learn the better as far as I am concerned.
Science has to look at what we don't know and try to get to know it first though
as I see it they are completly different disciplines. One was based on his interlectual responses to the world he saw from which he developed science. The other was based on hypothetical greed with no theory behind it.
Exactly. Alchemy was a hypothesis that was disproved. A negative result scientifically is as valuable as a positive. It may not be as good for business but in terms of knowledge it has the sam value
There is a lot of theory behind it. Lead can be changed into gold. It simply can't be done economically. But to do it an understand it they needed to know about atoms and their structures.
there is now. I remember we had a lesson on it in school. But all the theory is modern. There was nothing at the time to say it would work any more than growing cash from seed
Effectively you need nuclear reactions to do it so no-one at the time had a clue about those.
Yes... Men and Women doing things when they have no idea if it will work is pretty much what all progress is.
Science is essentially the pursuit of the unknown.
And to say there was no reason to believe it would work is quite wrong. They were all sure it must work. How, they reasoned, could gold come about in the first place. Surely it must be a process that could be repeatable given the right conditions. And it was. And you could say that a large part of science from then to now has been related to discovering how that very process works. (nb. it's much easier if you've got a supanova and a black hole handy :) )
And on a final note. There were a couple of questions about what was before the big bang. Which of course is an issue because of the English language. Time doesn't start until the big bang starts. So you can't have things before time. "Before" doesn't exist, before time exists. Which is what makes it so complicated.
Anyway... Morning :)
It's quiet with no Amy!
Morning :D
#MFC: Cold Turkey for a Facebook Addict
I found this interesting ... anyone tried this? I'd love to hear what your experiences are too. Has anyone gotten messages from people after 'de-friending' them?
She's en route to NZ, no?
Morning, everyone.
Morning everyone. I appear to have lost my coat in the move somewhere.
Really? It's probably just there.
Just where?
If I were to guess, it'd be at the bottom of a random pile of clothes.
Very likely. I know where it isn't and that is on me, so I'm going to have to buy a new one.
And chances are, you'll find it while you're trying to look for something else you've misplaced in the future.
The two Lego Bricks principle?
What's that?
Say you have a tin of Lego Bricks and you need to find two bricks of the same size and colour to match others being used in the construction. Why is it that you can always find one but never find the other - then later on when you are looking for another identical pair, you cannot find that one, but you find the original one you are searching for?
How very Danish! And I love it. :D
how terrible for you :-)
It really is. Stupid shopping.
A girl who doesn't like to shop? You don't see that everyday...
this must have been written by someone living in Denmark :-)
Exactly. :D
Max said something yesterday about his memoirs to this effect:
I was thinking, "Don't worry Max, we've always been very annoyed with you." :D
He's assuming that people care enough to read it.
I think there will be audience
And people will actually read it, simply because he's that controversial. We may not like him, but he might make for a good read. Kinda like the way everyone wants to hear what Nigel Stepney has to say.
I expect so. You couldn't pay me to read it.
And then people will start talking about it...
can you help me with mine?
Series 8 46 inch Samsung LED TV for approx $4000 AUD (£2000)
or something a lot cheaper.
I've always tried to buy the best that I can afford but it's a hell of a lot of money for what is essentially a big computer monitor!
like what?
Ah, you see, I know very little about TVs. We threw ours away.
I used to sell TV's - what do you need?
Morning! I'm loving these crisp October mornings :)
Mmm Crisps :)
hehe :)
How is everyone on this tuesday?
I'm not too bad :) How are you?
How much can we read into this?
Bernie prepared to offer 17 year contract to Silverstone
Good stuff, Im pretty good. Lazy day ahead with a bit of F1 related blogging this afternoon :)
Morrrrrrrning
Pretty good considering i didn't go to sleep that long ago!
My conclusions are that Bernie stitched up this Gillett guy to make Silverstone get it's act together - why else would he bend over backwards to help Hockinhalf but not Silverstoned or Done-on-time?
It's probable, like Steven said last night with his comment. Although AUTOSPORT reports the same quotes but doesn't include the part about silverstone's possibilties for the contract.
Indeed. But Gillett really fired up the spin machine yesterday. If it'll mean Silverstone will improve its infrastructure, then that can't be bad, right?
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek!!! I think my CD has arrived...
Muse? Is it autographed?
Yes!! :D:D
WOO!!
That's made my day :)
Brilliant. :D
Well done Lukeh!
Congrats!
I have had a productive morning thus far... I have completed... Chapter 2 of the Tales of Monkey Island!
You're supposed to be editing. Do we have to start shooing you as well?
What an excellent way to start the day
I mean, FOR SHAME ALEX.
Hehehe.
I know... I know...
I will need shooing shortly (try saying that five times fast!)
:)
I have a biased interest here - Donington was my local track so I was happy to see it get the Grand Prix. I was optimistic but I quickly realised they were just being used to get to Silverstone.
If Silverstone gets improved that's great - but right now I just want a British Grand Prix - I don't care where in the UK or how!
I'm on the university's unsecured connection with requires a password....go figure...
Hehehe, ours is the same. Tis odd.
Am here to collect money for our first Motorsport event....i've given people a 3 hour window to come and pay me....but i already need the loo and can't leave my laptop. Booo
like a good plasma that only shows HD (not true HD) for about one quarter of the price. better for sports apparently and Zoe wont notice the difference. no bragging rights tho :)
Can someone briefly summarise what a creative commons licence is?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creative_Commons
Ah ok, thanks.
I advise anyone with sound to watch the video on that page....genius
Jeremy,
You have picked a good brand that is also quite reasonable on price - I would suggest to you that you should pick the TV you want based on picture quality within your budget.
You might have to look at generic panels if you want cheaper - most panels are made by the same factories anyway, so it should be no bother. I am not sure how reliable they are, however.
When I used to sell TV's, I noticed the following:
Samsung: High-tech and no brand prestige = good price
Sony: Overpriced and underspecced - they don't make their own panels
Philips: Sharp Picture
Panasonic: Best colour palette and Contrast
Sharp: Middle of the road, expensive
LG: Same as Philips
Pioneer: Don't know if they make them anymore - best 'cabinet', but expensive. Great picture though.
Hope that helps...
I had an achievement at the F1 exhibit - they had a Heikki hat for $10! On special down from $42.99! It's a kids one but it fits me. And I only had $8 on me so I borrowed $2 from my brother.
Now the Lewis hat can be confined to the cupboard :D
Yay!
and there was a security guard who told me to stop taking photos but then even he admitted he didn't understand the rule saying 'you can only take photos of the cars' so I kept going. Win!
i predict a heikki win on sunday.
Heikki who ? :-)
i do hope so. with vettel in second, barrichello 6-7th and button out the points. would make for an awesome last race
Ohh so he's on tour...
:P
fail though, I can't seem to be able to get data working on my phone so no mobile doohickey and no drop.io until I sort it out :(
has this been discussed yet?
"Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone has denied having given Donington a further extension to its deadline, and says the circuit's boss Simon Gillett is breaching his contract."
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/79409
Kinda mentioned it earlier, BBC and telegraph saying Silverstone will be offered the deal but AUTOSPORT not mentioning it. I hope Bernie's finally given up hope and it's more legal stuff concerning the deadline rather than an extension once again...
should have used the preview button ;)
i did. the issue is the "quick comment" button. i shoulda hit reply.
:P hehe i knows, just messing wid ya
I think you should put more steps in to the quick comment thing, so it is not such a quick comment.
It's useful for starting conversations on threads with no doohickey comments, but that doesn't necessarily need to be super fast, and if it's more of an effort it might solve some of the problems?
I have set up my parents wireless because they didn't know they even had the function available. It is much better than my wireless at home. Can I stay here please?
I say yes.
woohoo! I kind of love their new house, we just need to pick it up and move it to Melbourne because I have a few tickets for concerts and tennis and F1 and things over there.
I would also like to admit that I cried at the airport after I promised myself I would not.
Aww. Sometimes these things just have to be done.
Good afternoon!
I have just fallen asleep at the post office... not much you can do to cover that up!
3 nights with not enough sleep and i am a zombie!
How do you manage to do that?!
Can you sleep standing up?
Hehe, you cried on arrival?
Its goodbyes which kill me...
Maybe I was crying because my laptop battery didn't last the 4 hour flight then the 1 hour flight and I didn't get the transcribing finished that I wanted.
At least you didn't faint and have to be taken away by ambulance after doing that!
It must have been that! Joe will be very disappointed :)
I was getting a package they couldnt deliver, their was a queue and chairs to wait on.....
My mum was pressed against the glass in arrivals waiting for me and I saw her and she looked so excited, so I cried because she was. I always cry when other people do. Even at funerals for people I didn't know. Boo other people, setting me off.
Ahhh, bless ya
I have a theory that one of his favourite sayings is 'its all swings and roundabouts'
They're starting them even earlier...
http://www.msauk.org/site/cms/newsarticle.asp?chapter=1&nid=1277
It pretty much is all swings and roundabouts. Except for the slide... and the climbing frame.
yup, brought it up earlier. The Telegraph got the scoop after talking to Bernie (is BobMcK from the Telegraph?) But the two-week reprieve is to fix the breach of contract, as agreed upon.
And the See-saw?
Awe... I did once see someone faint at heathrow arrivals, it looked like a lady had just met her sister.
Airports are pretty emotional places. I remember being stuck on a plane at 13 on my own, and told to go to the UK, my relatives would be at the other end. They dont seem to bad after that ;)
and seesaws. And those little rocker things. (warning, link contains baby panda)
Swing!
Hehehe, that doesn't need a warning! :)
James Allen says it will be 'wet and chaotic' this weekend...
I bloody well hope so - we could do with a good race :D
It always happens. Next thing I know, we see 18-year olds in F1...
But interesting that they're not racing each other per se. They're racing against the target time set by the Cadet. Kinda like ghost racing in video games, if you will.
That won't be helpful to Brawn though, I'd think...
AUTOSPORT says that rain is most likely on Saturday and least likely on Sunday, though. Conflicting again...
In other words, there's no overtaking and racing to a set target time - much like an F1 stint ;)
But ah, there won't be any cars/karts blocking these kids... :D
Yes but no-one from AUTOSOPRT have complimented my blog yet, have they?
Of course not, AUTOSOPRT doesn't exist.
Just kidding... :D
From Dank:
AUTOSPORT has it here.
No wonder they don't think F1 is a sport - they seem to hate fast cars. Somewhere, Vijay Mallya must be shaking his head in disbelief...
I disagree. Sicince is about adcancement, not about magic. It is analysis, thought, creating a hypothesis which can be tested, then experimentation, and finaly understanding results. magic is about jumping up in the air then thinking if you do it enough you will Hover.
Time may or may not not exist, but everything in the laws of physics is based on cause and effect. In order for matte/antimatter and the laws to come into existence it is logical to assume that their was a cause.
Boring! And Bernie thinks these guys want a Grand Prix? Madness!
agreed. shall think about it.
The businessmen do. The government doesn't.
Thanks Gav. I have always had Panasonic gear, and I like that they sponsor F1.
Just so you know, Sony do their own panels again now after sharing facilities with Samsung for quite some time. A lot of people don't understand the extra colour technologies Sony invest in (very similar to Apple) and while I agree that some of their models are over priced, it is not true for most of them (unlike a few years ago).
I'll let you know when I finally make a decision. I guess its a close race between a Panasonic plasma and the LED Samsung. Hmmmmmmm.
Hehe, why are they using the word Lakh?
In english most people would say 1.4 million instead of 14 lakh :D
Fair enough - my opinions are based on a few years ago - good to see they make their own panels... although I am not the biggest Sony fan either (very flashy and overpriced, poor after-sales service to dealers and customers).
LED? Hmm, is the picture that much better than the Plasma? Because there's nothing wrong with a HD-capable plasma you know... good lifetime, cheaper...
I would recommend and LCD over a Plasma because those things are heavy and they use a lot more power.
Are they still susceptible to screen burn?
He said LED though - not LCD?
My LCD gets very warm and isn't exactly light either - but the thick glass in a Plasma does weigh a ton - I have moved too many of those damn things!
Nope - we left one overnight on a menu screen of a DVD by accident and the next day, after a few minutes of normal running there were no artefacts
(don't buy display models, kids!)
and the LED ones are even better on power usage and the colours are sharper. Buy buy buy!
Heavy = yes.
Use more power = mostly myth. Their power consumption has more peaks and troughs than a normal LCD (or LED backlit LCD) and competitors tend to pick the highest figure and focus on it.
They both use a lot of power and get about as warm.
The LED TV's may use less power, but are they really worth twice the price? Think how many years of running it would cost to re-coup the savings...
I just know that I love my TV and if I could marry it I would. I'd even take its last name. Just call me Amy XBR.
:D
What do you have?
Jeremy,
This looks like a good article: http://gadgetwise.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/06/11/whats-an-led-tv/
Aargh! It's all too hard. I'm being a baby about spending many thousands of dollars.
Maybe I should just use the three years interest free offer and pay it off.
*thinks about shuffling money back to ING Direct*
Very good idea - only get interest-free though!
Pay cash = better price than financing. Will have to do sums when I can get exact prices later in the week.
Depends. Interest-free normally only requires a handling fee - which means that if you don't have the cash, it's a good way to get stuff...
Bravia KDL40XBR which was my bargain of the century because they accidentally sold it to me at a $800 discount and gave me a free $100 HDMI cable too (I heart you JB Hi Fi)
Sounds cool. I have a Samsung 32" LCD - except I never watch TV!
when I moved to Melbourne I promised myself my reward for finding a flat would be a 40 inch TV. I had to pick it up earlier though so I got some funny looks carting it into the backpackers :D
Hehehehe
I'll bet they wanted to score that one for the common room ;)
They already had two and people were always watching crappy movies on them so it was quite a party in my room for two nights where we had free reign. Although everyone was British and they wanted to watch Neighbours ;)
Doesnt it take a bit longer than that? a friend of mine at uni used his as his computer screen, if you watched a dvd you could see the outline of a window around the top of the screen
No idea - all I know is that after a while you couldn't tell!
Hehe, you are implying yu live in melbourne and dont watch it = Does not compute!
Have you watched corrination street now you are back in NZ?
I look at it from the interest i can earn with ING.
How much interest will I earn if I leave the money in the bank, versus how much I can save by paying cash (hich I have just sitting there burning a hole in my pocket).
Cool - if you can do that, then go for it!
ING left F1 I say boycott :P
Abbey almost lost the tiny amount of money in my account with them for sponsoring the red. luckily for them they continued with mclaren so i didnt have to :P
my parents did tell me they were missing it by being at the airport and can I arrive earlier next time? I shall no doubt see it before the end of the week :D
Also, thanks UK folk, we like how you talk too, even if it is tiring to do it all day.
:)
The last time I mentioned it, the folks in the UK linked to articles which showed how much cheaper these TVs are there. The Samsung Rep I spoke to didn't want to talk about it when I brought it up with him :)
At least I can get wholesale prices.
Although... of course... I'm not here :)
How are you getting on? Or is Monkey Island still?
*is IT
Very tempted to do this. C'mon Santander, come to Australia and offer better rates than anyone else. Please?
I liked my trick of being told the one I wanted was sold out so here, have the floor model for $800 less with a free HDMI cable and then going back to pick it up later once I had found a friend with a car, and finding out they actually did have a brand new boxed one out the back. Muhaha. It was already on special!
No no... Monkey Island is completed... I have done some editing... Not enough... but then it was lunch time so I stopped and ate some lunch. And then before I went back I just had a quick check of the comments...
Hmm I should go to bed because I may think its 11.30 but its really 1.30 and I have so many people I have to see tomorrow. Tired just thinking about it :(
They probably still made money off you. But well done on the X Series Sony Bravia. I'm jealous.
I'll sleep now. Thanks for the input all.
hehe... Does this mean we can go to the forbidden pub to celebrate? :D
Also i have a puzzle... how do you differentiate between access and excess, do you say iccess for both of them?
Keep us posted :)
Hehe, you will have missed my rebuttal of your science argument good sir ;)
Night.
And Night Amy if you are going
I pronounce access as axes; I pronounce excess as X-S.
I'll drop an audio clip tomorrow for you. (not here)
I said:
You said:
Creating a hypohesis which can be tested is doing thing when you have no idea if they would work. You wouldn't need to test it if you knew.
Also:
It is logical to assume a cause, but the cause may have happened after the effect. As we see in vacuums, we can observe energy being borrowed from the future.
It turns out students are very very very unreliable. Annoyingly so
Hehe. :D Surely they'd sound different even in Kiwi?
hehe cool :D
I was shocked to learn in other accents 'fairy' and 'ferry' are not pronounced the same.
This blows my mind. However i still maintain cause and effect is a cycle which frames exisitance
And yet you must be wrong because otherwise nothing could start.
Dont you get confused?
Say you wanted to do some washing up and you were out of washing up liquid and you needed to borrow someone elses so you say "can I use your Fairy"
They think this is a strange request but nevertheless bring their ferry over for you to use...
see that we would not say because I have never heard of that brand before in my life :D
I was going to link that the other day ;)
Just remember Nick. How we perceive the world isn't how the world is. Birds experience time more slowly than us, which is why they always seem to move out of the way of cars later than we can fathom (well often anyway). Butterfly see more colours than we do. The world isn't simply how we perceive it. As Douglas Adams put it, "Time is an illusion, lunch time doubly so".
Anyway, talking of starting, I better get back to my editing :)
You will have to tell me in private who you work for to get that deal ;)
You bought a floor model??? Amy, you don't know how abused those things get!
no, as it worked out I paid floor model price for a new one so its allll good. :D
You two have both watched the Matrix too many times ;)
oh yeah. sleep. i mean it this time.
hehe, but you might!
Imagine if you wanted to say somone looked really pretty and you said you look like a fairy! But you might be misunderstood as they think you said "you look like a ferry"
It could cause chaos! :D
New Piltoons from Bruno, now with added pacman http://mantovani.zip.net/
Ha! It's all about context though, isn't it? In what situation would you ever say someone looked like a ferry?
I agree with time, its as bendy as can be. but I cant belive the universe just exploded from nothing... if it had it would have been a perfect explosion, neatly bringing us back to how the discussion started...
But we have chickens and eggs...
But if it didn't explode from nothing... Then what made the thing that was there before? Your theory is circular.
Ah but so is yours. If it expoded from noting... why?
why then and not earlier or later?
Ah, well you got a brilliant deal then :D
I will have to start! ;)
I am interested to hear the consequences :)
Sophie was looking concerned. Her father had walked off to get the pay and display ticket and had left her looking out to sea. As she looked out with her Fisher Price telescope she looked between the yachts and dingy. After a while Sophie's eye had fallen on the prow of a large car transporting vehicle. This was what had caused Sophie's concern. Because sitting there on the prow of the vessel was Tinkerbell.
Sophie decided not to wait any longer, and she ran over to her father.
"Dad, dad, there's a fairy on the ferry!"
"Don't be silly girl you couldn't possibly stack one giant car carrying ship on top of another"
"No dad, it's a fairy on a ferry!"
"I haven't got a clue what you're talking about, surely it must be exhausting using that New Zealand accent all the time?"
Hehehehe!
There isn't earlier. Because time occurs then.
This, is why Scientists are looking into things we don't yet know the answer to.
Also... go away! :)
See ya :)
Since I had to de-Kiwi to actually be understood here, I have found I am a lot less tired ;)
hehehehe :D
If you write another book of short stories that should go in it!
We spent two years building up a community, and I'm spending the third year shooing everyone away.
:D
But explosions require time to happen.
So if time suddenly starts with the exposion... that also raises the question of why...
:P
I havde returned from outside unscathed, phew. There is this bright light out there making it quite a nice day
I hope it's servers dont go down.
I would dearly love to see Rubens fighting down to the wire for the championship, he does deserve it... but then, so does Button - I'm looking forward to a showdown in the impressive looking Abu Dhabi
FYI - you can take part in the championship round table discussion with F1 Badger here :) http://www.f1badger.com/tag/champion-2009/
Not here... Honest...
Nick... This video is for you you clearly need some Quantum Electro Dynamics. Here's Jim Al-Khalili explaining some of it for you:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRbWTpwxEAs&NR=1
The whole show is excellent
And from memory he uses a pint of Guiness to explain cosmic foam :)
Hey Adam - when's your next podcast?
*coughs*
daily?
Eh?
I appeared and it all went quiet :(
isn't the rubens post for chats about rubens?
will move comments.
hey lukeh. christine has kicked us all out ;)
Just reading back now on comments :D
Well... it is a nice day and everything...
Wont that cause cross thread conversations?
I need to be kicked out in 15 mins to go swimming :P
i know just the girl.
They are in the Rubens thread, aren't they?
Oh you mean the podcast thing. Ignore me.
talking of which. i have to go fight vista. hopefully back before the sun goes down.
Good luck...
What's wrong with F1 Badger?
he was rude to rob this week: http://twitter.com/F1Badger/status/4679708969
but have moved podcast talk to the daily.
although i could split the comment i guess. ahh stuff it i don't care. later all.
Yeah sorry about that - I have no idea where and how to post here sometimes!
Anything other than the daily needs to stay on topic.
Afternoon all.
Just finished on a certain MAGAZINE after an early start and have shifted all of 10 metres up the office to work on an Abu Dhabi preview supplement for someone's sponsor.
You could make one of those documentaries out of that; "When Satirists Attack"...
Does said sponsor have any spare tickets?
*prays*
i sort of don't care for the comment anyway.
plugging is great when it comes from anyone contributing to the conversation. if you're just going to arrive out of the blue and pimp your site, i say "chuff off".
we don't really want to be a link dump for anyone and everyone do we?
Are you going?
it's a small world.
hehe. fair point.
Mr C, did Vista crash already, is that why you're back? :)
Would be nice, wouldn't it?
Now you are worrying me that I am doing that when commenting on other people's blogs. How do you draw the line here?
*runs*
It would be lovely, I have never been to a race and i am going to be in Dubai when it is on!
If any Journalists need a local guide (i grew up in dubai) in exchange for a small stool in the corner ... ;)
Right time to dive in, see you later!
good question. i don't know, i really don't.
i love the idea of plugging good people, who have stuff worth seeing. but if lots of peeps start pinging us every time they post blog, and never bother to say anything else... that would get irritating very quickly, right?
Byee!
We would be Twitter.
god no. that would be terrible.
it has be about the conversation, here and on other blogs.
Definitely not... I think people who want to plug should have a justifiable reason behind it rather than simply coming into the comments and saying 'Hey! Here's my blog, read it'. That's why I rarely blug my own bosts because I wouldn't wanna seem like I just want people to go on it when sometimes I may have things worth sharing and talking about..
I think the community here is luvky because we have some *amazing* bloggers like gavin with blogs worth looking at related to Formula 1 and some staggering analysis but there should be a line. I don't think anyone really goes too far with it though personally
Yeah OK I see it now - so for example, my comment on James Allen's blog or this one on my Name Is IRL are OK, you reckon?
....blug my own bosts?
I must remember to learn english one day...
No. Boo.
Was originally booked in to host for VIPs at screening of the race at a team's factory, but that particular team has parted company with the sponsor from whom the VIPs would have come, so that's been nixed.
I think my accreditation carriage might have turned into a pumpkin, anyway. Hotel bills are going to be crippling, too. I look forward to Joe's comments nearer the time...
Are you upside down today?
I think getting that CD has left my mind frazzled
You may have invented a new word...
Blug verb: To plug one's or another's blog post
Usage: That's why I rarely blug my own posts
sounds like you're eating something. :D
Oooh I wonder which sponsor and team that was? ;)
I also spotted luvky in there as well. :)
I can only imagine!
Awwhh.
proof reading major fail. :(
Luvky: To be lucky and lovely at the same time
Usage: I think the community here is luvky....
How many guesses do I get? :D
Aww, it's okay. We knew what you meant. Plus, just always remember that Mr C is worse. :)
well, see, you just gave mynameisirl a free plug right there. which changes everything again.
maybe we need to start a pay it forward plugging system. if you plug you blog on blog 'x', you have to plug blog 'x' somewhere else?
as i just proved. time to run
A rush of blood to the head?
But not THAT Rush Of Blood To The Head, obviously.
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Dictionary
In an hour I will add blug and luvky to the dictionary :D
:D
Ah, no need ;)
Have done it :)
Aaah you've done my head in! ;)
They're already there!
I should admit that on my travels today I was playing Bookworm, which is a small game all about spelling, so I should be ashamed really.
What about Scribblenauts?
Oh god that's all about spelling too. So that's two games I'm addicted to, involving correct spelling, producing the likes of blug and luvky. Argh!
Have you tried Typing Maniac on Facebook?
Nope. Use facebook lite as well because all the stuff on there like famrville makes me want to explode filling up the normal FB homepage!
Hahaha! :D
I'm having a quick break... Am over half way through todays pages. Phew.
Had a terrible problem with the word vial like vial of liquid. Kept attempting to go for vile or phile and then after all that I think there may be an alternative spelling which is phile. Now am worried about which is the UK or US version.
Second thing was that I came across a passage written, must have been years ago, where the main character goes on a rant about another character folding over the corners of the pages. Somethings never change!
*some things, not somethings. Doh!
Sounds like an exciting book ;)
Construction of the Korea International Circuit
Looks like they're getting more work done than Donington...
Yeah I know!!!
Exciting stuff!
Now now.
...Donington has a digger.
:D But not a brand-new paddock. :D
Korea also has people who look like they know what they're doing ;)
Okay then... goes on a rant about another character folding down the corner of his Kindle ;)
My secret plan is to get Librarians onside :)
I thought it was phial - I think you can spell it vial or phial try this link
Have always spelt it vial myself. didn't know there was an alternative spelling to be honest!
Hehehehe, better :)
I'm thinking after all the spelling chat we should have Must Spell Tuesday to follow Must Comment Monday where every post should be correctly spelt for the place of origin of the person typing ;)
sis meight not bi a gud eidi

I have taken out my enormous double volume "Shorter" Oxford English Dictionary. (I think it's shorter in the sense it isn't the 20 volume one).
It has Phial with a definition. But under Vial it says Alt Phial. So I think that means Phial is the original.
You could also try Ask Oxford
Yes that says "alteration of Phial" so I'm going with Phial.
This editing business is complicated :)
I think Mr C is tired of Vista!
#mfc Just reading up on the Trafigura botched gag order. Given that there was initial outrage on Twitter that may have triggered Trafigura backing down, could it have really been all down to Twitter? More importantly, how does one ensure that Twitter doesn't become an angry unruly mob?
how many days until windows 7?
October 22nd I think so 9 days?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8304908.stm
Oh today is the 2nd tuesday of the month as well so Microsoft have unleashed a 272mb/17 files of 'important updates upon us. #MFC
A1GP is ALIVE?!
Teixeira heads for Australia. Ferrari lawyers to follow?
you can't, sadly. the wider issue is, "realtime" means facts will likely be unconfirmed when the mobs turn.
ohmylord. 470mb here.
That's said, the only updates I'm getting relate to office 2007 rather than Vista updates... odd.
He's summarising a link to a story I sent to him yesterday ;)
I agree. In this particular case both Twitter & various blogs have meant an injunction which was stopping Parliamentary reporting has been dropped which is good IMO because the media should always be able to report what is said in the House. However, you could easily see another situation where it could be used for a witch hunt with partial or fictitious reporting creating a false story.
So the next question is - can Twitter regulate itself? Can people who know the facts correct false or misleading stories by tweeting about it in the same way that false or misleading stories are tweeted?
You could, I assume, create a false rumour on the stock market and send a company into bankruptcy. Although don't try it as false rumours relating to the stock market are a criminal offence even if you don't profit from them.
This problem happened a few years ago when two coppers who were charged with a crime had previous convictions suppressed in order not to jeopardise their case.
The same day they were acquitted, the internet was full of posts saying that the previous convictions were the same type as those they were being tried for, which led to a lot of controversy!
if the accused was awake and aware of the controversy, and sitting in front of twitter at the time... then maybe.
Twitter are apparently banning recurring tweets - sounds good, right?
This has been an issue for awhile, especially with blogs. Something happens, blogs freak out, then the details come out.
Consumers need to become better at filtering out the BS.
it depends on how you define recurring tweets. if they mean spam, yeah, it should be good.
the thing is, rumors spread a lot faster in Twitter because it's a lot more public than blogs are. so it can cause chaos a lot quicker.
Yeah, it can get out of hand really quickly. I think it's also tough to distinguish between something likened to a "news organization" and a "consumer" on twitter. A lot of people are both with retweets and all that.
someone on radio2 is talking about blogs making money by selling cupcake recipes...
What about blogs that make cupcakes?
I hear there's a lot of money in helping people prepare frozen pizzas
apparently that won't make you much money.
:P
I heard it was a pizza cake?
So I think I'm stopping editing for the day now. 41 pages in the can. Which is 1 page ahead of schedule. Because the opening part of the book has been being worked at on and off for almost 9 years it has had a fair old whack of editing in it before. This makes it easier on the one hand, but on the other it does mean I have read it a seriously large number of times which makes it less interesting to read.
Most surprising thing in today's edit. I have discovered a character is French when introduced. They aren't French at the end of the novel!
Afternoon all, i am back and feeling chlorinated...
I read that as Liberians... That confused me!
Afternoon all
Someone has spammed a quiz thing on the drop... spot the problem with question 1 though
That is quite amusing
Todt has hit out at Ari... http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/79414 And there i was worrying it had all gone a bit quiet...
I wonder if he thinks votes are up for grabs or if he is worried he is behind?
I love how Max and Todt describe "do as we say or we come after you" as "FIA Unity" :D
Oh good. He must be worried then.
From twitter(@motorsportprint: RT @cholled).. no new colours for renault in Brazil http://img50.imageshack.us/img50/2015/bannervs.jpg
Good to see GMM got that one wrong then!
umm... looks the same?
*Must not say 'told you so'*
Hi everybody.
:) ...yes?
Its a shame, i guess they are saving them for a rebrand next season when they are unlikely to replace Ing
You wouldn't think they'd want to draw more attention to the fact they've lost ING and the reasons for doing so by changing the livery for the last two races. Then again, they dedicate podium finishes to Flav so who knows.
did we think it would be different then?
I keep saying it, they didn't go back to the factory to replace the colour scheme did they? Went straight to Brazil right. No time surely.
There was some speculation last week, and a story from our accurate friends this morning
fair enough. complete news to me. i can't figure why anyone thinks they would do when they didn't for suzuka.
am with rg on this one.
evening
They've had since Singapore so it's not infeasible. Never thought it likely though.
RG are you hosting the quiz tomorrow?
Hey Jackie. Is there a problem with pitlane fanatic tonight?
hey jackie. how are ya?
I am if the server wakes up
Next week, Mav is tomorrow.
But remember folks, 21st October, officially awesome quiz, all questions from 2000+.
personally I'n good thanks, but annoyed at the server been down all day. how about you, got over the move?
Ahh, I couldn't remember if RG was this week or next week
Not sure I have many from before 2000 come to think of it
hehe I love it, no PF and where else would we be but here
Have emailed f1-live with a link to the pic
That won't help them until GMM stumble across it!
Well there was one week from Singapore to Suzuka but three weeks from Singapore to Interlagos...
And Renault only pulled out when the team was already in Singapore so logistics suggest that Interlagos is the first race that it would be possible for....
It will help them source their news in future..
In fairness they did contact renault who declined to comment,
Anyone ever heard of Mark Vermeulen?
He's a Zimbabwe cricketer who was hit in the head with a ball that cracked his skull (like Massa's injury). He made a comeback, but couldn't play as well and ended up getting so angry he burnt the Cricket Academy down.
When they checked him out, doctors had discovered that the blow
to his head had triggered partial complex epilepsy and impulsive behaviour disorder. The story ends well though - he was put on medication, made a comeback and donated all of his fees to the rebuilding of the academy.
The scary part is, what will happen to Massa when he is put under the stress and strain of a Grand Prix? I don't think he's out of the woods yet...
Could that be a pic of the bits that have come off the car shipped direct from Suzuka and will be replaced by bits coming from Enstone?....
Could well be, i was thinking that earlier. It's not *that* difficult to relivery a car, you just need the new livery and a big hair dryer and a bit of time and patience
Just found this in an email i was sent..
http://webr.emv2.com/mclaren/VMM_LandH_signed_shirts.jpg
Don't ya just love how Heikki's in the winning shirt, and how lewis is in the normal one :D
Surely though Brazil isn't the place to do it?
Heikki to win in Brazil?
Depends what the man upstairs (that being the owner of Renaultsport, not God) wants
Impulse control disorders could be very dangerous in a racing driver. hopefully they will have tested for that, although there is only so much you can do. I dont know how common they are from head injuries, i know somone who's brother had one at school. Quite scary
I'll be honest and think he wouldn't be too bothered as long as the car isn't showing ING and the other sponsor.
There was an article about painting the livery in F1 Racing - it was Renault's ironically enough. It's specialist work done back in blighty as the slightest imperfection costs time.
I agree...
I did think that his suggestion that he'd lost the WDC last year because of "Crashgate" and that he'd taken legal advice was a bit unlike his previous personality...
He even mentioned it in the quotes from yesterday's test...
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/79401
I agree...

Not necessarily, it would be a clever move to try and put all this piquet stuff behind them.
All the people involved are gone, as are the main sponsors, a change of livery would say "we know our team did something wrong, but it wasnt the team's fault, we are a new team, we'd like to make this water under the bridge"
I think they would be better off doing it next season, getting people excited about the prospect of seeing a renault in a 'classic livery' race...
So, as long as Massa doesn't come back and immediately burn down the Renault motorhome, we can assume he's okay?
It made me smile too... but it's only aesthetics as Heikki disappears when he is in the normal shirt....
Rather like his race performances then....
Looking at the provisional Macau GP entry list. Looking good.
Phew...
No motorhomes at Interlagos...
He might refuse to wave the chequered flag at the Renaults - they'll just have to keep going until they run out of fuel...
Can't see Grosjean making it as far as the final flag somehow...
Especially if we have 2003 type weather....
Could be good for Kimi and Fisi though.... if I remember right...
:D
The first ever race I watched! :)
And one of the reasons Kimi didn't quite pip Michael that year...
I blame Teflonso of course....
If I remember correctly Kimi should thank Alonso because if the race hadn't been red-flagged he wouldn't have finished so far up.
:D
Errr...
I think that it all hinged on the number of laps as to whether they went back one or two laps... one lap gave it to Fisi and two to the Kimster...
But if it hadn't been red flagged I think the Kimster would have gone on to win...
If it hadn't been red-flagged Dc would have won?
Maybe nobody would have finished!
Saftey car FTW
or that :D
agreed.
This looks awesome - using aerodynamics to create a better desk fan!
thats very cool
Hmmm...
Well I don't think so but... I may be a tad biased...
And DC was on a different strategy having pitted originally on lap 19 whilst Kimi didn't pit until lap 27....
You killed their website. You didn't have something to do with mine did you?
Dyson "fan": http://www.youtube.com/user/dysonteam#p/u/3/irohYBKObpc
He is on skynews right now
I guess it might be silent... so good for sidepodusage
However at £199 we might need to have a funding drive!
I have killed 3 websites in one week???
Must still contain a fan to drive the air - a smaller fan admittedly so probably quieter. Otherwise it's just a venturi effect.
I can't believe that this is getting any publicity. This is not new. People have been using eductors in liquids for many years and this is just an eductor
The cyclone was hardly a new idea either
Cyclones were used in filtration for years before he decided to apply it to a vacuum cleaner. You would think such a renowned inventor would just occasionally come up with his own original idea
Its a new idea to apply it to a deskfan though...
Using airblades werent a new idea, but his hand dryers are still quite unique
Are any recent inventions new ideas? everything from ipods to flying cars to clockwork radios are just reapplications
Why didn't you think of it then?
There are loads of inventions that are just new applications of an old idea - but these guys were clever enough to refine it for the new use and market t. The rest of us either go wow or just complain it's not a new idea ;)
The genius is in finding the application. The fan seems fairly niche compared to a vacuum cleaner though.
That's the easy part. It's finding someone to make it. Even Dyson couldn't manage.
There are new inventions and there are developments like this fan.
this fan is based on the hand dryers isn't it?
I have a stack of invention ideas. I just can't get the money to make any of them happen.
Would love to have seen this on Dragon's Den. I wouldn't mind betting that the fan would have fallen flat on its face.
But according to your argument about athletes, lack of money shouldn't matter, and we shouldn't be paying people to invent stuff if the idea is good enough...
Can you imagine Theo? "Now why would I want this when I can get a normal one for less than a tenner?"
Patent them and take it to people like Dyson
Exactly! I mean, how often do you complain about buffetting from a normal fan?
Peter Jones
You don't own a desk fan patent. You don't own the venturi effect. What is to stop me going out and doing this better tomorrow
EJ invented the desk fan anyway...
I certainly don't turn on my fan and think "Ahhh.... cold air - what a relief! Shame about the buffeting though!"
I am not looking for state or lottery funding to do it. I am doing what I said the athletes should do. Get out and find funding. I just happen to be failing miserably
I have a bevy of beauties gently wafting me with palm leaves, it's the only way to go.
The people on dragons den seem to have a much higher opinion of themselves than I do.
As i see it, if you have time to produce a tv show you dont care about your business and thus you arent a good businessperson
I can't imagine anyone other than Adrian Newey being offended by the unsmoothed airflow
He must be very angry that someone else invented this!
He'll be going "Why his he getting so much coverage? This isn't new! I've been using this to help engine cooling for years!"
They are all still growing their businesses. There should be no reason for them to be involved 24/7 unless there are problems. They are getting ideas for new businesses at a rate that can't be equalled any other way. They are also opening doors for themselves. 5 years ago if Duncan or THeo phoned a company in a different area of business they would have struggled to get through to the top people. Now they are the guys from the TV and that breaks down a lot of barriers. Their business gain by them being on the show.
Maybe he built himself one already
He probably ordered a load to build a new wind tunnel!
Didn't Mythbusters make one out of desk fans and an array of straws?
Ha, they'll be using it to get around some of the windtunnel limits - as long as the FIA measure at the fan outlet velocity they'll get the extra drawn in air for free!
What was the myth?
Can't remember - but they needed to make a windtunnel. The following the truck one?
Were they using the straws to smooth/direct the flow? Making it more laminar/polarised?
That's the one!
Maybe to stop the buffetting ;-)
I never even considered desk fans have buffeting before today!
They buffet your fingers if you poke them in
I bet it bugs you the next time you use it. Best order a few boxes of straws
It will do. Big boo to Dyson!
You just need 2 fans, just out of sync, so that the buffeting cancels out
hello..
Hey dude!
Hey. I saw your comment on MyNameIsIRL this afternoon, didn't have to time to add anything.
Bit spooky how he wrote the same post as I did!
Thought I'd blug about a post I just wrote about the possible permutations in the championship - hope you like it guys, and please leave me your predictions ;)
Yeah! He's coming from a slightly different angle I think though, as his blog has been running for a while and has built a big following but the page views go dead in winter (as do many..).
Absolutely. It compelled me to comment for the first time though!
Its all a little quiet tonight!
Winter's come early
Is it like this in the off season?
we're a bit busy.
updated my machine to snowy earlier this week and now it's the turn of christine's.
nope. off-season is super-busy for us.
some might say it's the best bit of the year ;)
Nope. In the off season we have more time to chat.
I'm surprised.
It is for most motorsport communities... although I sense not this one..
We need to stir up something.
I think Luca Badoer is underrated....
Perhaps it's just me who has more time in the off season then :)
i agree.
as a painter and decorator i heard he's awesome.
so crazy
I've been fighting with Vista SP2 update. Have tried everything it says on the windows site but I keep getting the same error so I've given up :(
went okay for me earlier. how far does yours get?
I've been quiet because I've been busy blogging, then staring at something awesome on my shelf ;)
hehe I wont say i am looking forward to it.
...but it might convince some people we need more races :P
Keep your fingers crossed.
we have high standards to keep up:
http://www.sidepodcast.com/2009/03/24/officially-the-best-off-season-ever/
I have been watching WW2 documentries... for some reason they always make me want to write a quiz...
We need 19 races with one or no back-to-backs and a 3-week midseason break. Can it be that hard?
Jean Todt is looking tired
It downloads, prepares for installation then says it has an error which, after a bit of investigation, is TRUST_E_NOSIGNATURE 0X800B0100. The site suggests downloading the CheckSUR tool which I finally managed to do but it's not fixed it. I've also tried removing all my security software & downloading it standalone but it just keeps coming up with the same error
Driver merry-go-round looks like dragging into the off-season and then before you know it everyone is unveiling their 2010 challenger. What off-season?
hmm. if i could find christine's power brick, i'd update hers and see if i get the same.
brb.
Good luck!!!
Just how it should be, of course.. but without the testing.
Are you mad? Trying to download and update Windows on Patch Tuesday?
Leave it a couple of days at least.
i'm only doing a man search. if it's not on top of the pile, it's not being found.
it went 100% fine this afternoon.
Before the USA woke up you mean?
I'm writing circuit profiles. Done Korea. Do I bother with Donington or not?
Maybe thats why i sttiill havent found my psp ?
No
I made a start on moving loose items to the new place. I'm looking forward to what I might find when I delve into the cupboards.
If I don't it's bound to go ahead at Donington. Simon Gillett should pay me not to bother.
F1 2009 comes out on oct 30th. that leaves 2 days to lean the circuitbefore the race ;)
We'll find out in two weeks, write it then
November 17th I thought?
It comes out then? I thought it was November 20th.
oops it is 20th. 17th is USA release date.
I heard it updated last week? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Codemasters-Limited-Formula-2009-Wii/dp/B002DUCCTM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1255467948&sr=1-2
Definitely not
Still 20th on Codies website
If you dont want to watch the post race forum on sunday... look what whats available on itv :D
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Codemasters-Limited-Formula-2009-Wii/dp/B002DUCCTM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1255467948&sr=1-2
people playing the wii game?
How odd.
Although at the moment games are going out so early both dates are theoretically possible.
People have been getting uncharted 2 delivered this morning and it isnt out untill friday!
Yup!
Online retailers worried about Royal Mail, one good thing they've done is get them worried enough to dispatch stupidly early :D
Nobody has told them they have to remove all the ING logos yet then? ;-)
found it!!
they're awake now aren't they? tis downloading just fine i think.
oops http://www.itv.com/presscentre/allstarfamilyfortunes/ep5wk43/default.html
...DC will be on BBC1 and ITV at the same time?
Mind = blown
possibly, although they dont go on strike next week.
could be fun! the press contact makes a good gateau
Guess what.....
they're both live :)
He must be a time lord.
Or the ridiculous suggestion that one of the shows must not be live, which is just silly.
Surely the F1 is live or they'd edit out the wait for the stewards' decisions?
I've been emailed by 5 games retailers this week about alternative postage options they're offering! The strikes over the past few weeks have messed up things enough for gameplay, Shopto, Play, etc... RM managed to lose both a game I bought and the replacement copy in the post during it all and I know Shopto at least have given up hope with the RM. Apparently there's strikes at the end of this week as well but I dunno about that.
ace. i (hearts) david for doing those kinda shows.
Slightly suspicious that Family Fortunes might not be live unless DC has travelled back in time to tell the us that Grant Bovey said “binoculars” to the question “Name something you’d wear on a nudist beach”
Why not just go down to the shops instead?
David Coulthard = The Real Doctor
ah, rubbish. my plan foiled ;) dreams = shattered
There are regional ones around and about but the big proper one is next Thursday.
New games tend to be cheaper online, whereas local high street shops stock then more expensively/at RRP. You could just go to the shops of course, it's just personal preference.
Although ASDA were selling FIFA 10 in supermarkets on launch day for £25 which is pretty awesome!
Ah, just like the good old days of mail order video games then ;)
Found this on Digigtal spy.
If you want to tell the bbc the red button coverage is good and you would like them to keep it up... here is your chance https://consultations.external.bbc.co.uk/departments/bbc/bbc-red-button/consultation/consult_view they are doing a consultation, takes about 2 mins
Temporal rifts may explain some of his crashes
what if i want to tell them that it's not?
Hehe thats what i did.. i would like 5live coms during quali and onboards when possible too.
That might take more than 2 minutes
Isnt it better than ITV though?
the lack of ads is better than itv.
beyond that... no.
I can't find the 'Crofty and Ant are the best thing about it' option
I could list the ways I think it is better
There has to be more than that - walking and talking, featurettes are good - forum is a good idea...
:D
Really, i guess you dont have a tv.
But being able to watch free practice without relying on the web is brilliant. onboards also kept me occupied at valencia
ok, yes.
jake is good. but eddie is ten times worse than blundell. ted doesn't have his own blog and legard makes me want to vomit.
please do. maybe we should each blog our bbc coverage thoughts and meet here in an hour?
Okay, 3.2.1.
Eddie is good at what he is meant to do.
This will end well!
I don't see where you could put that in the survey!
he's meant to annoy the nuts out of me?
Jake is better than Steve or Jim ever were.
Eddie at least asks the right questions... sometimes.. eventually... Blundell talked hot air and never interviewed anyone.
Ted should have a blog and my opinion of Legard is known to many.
After the season :-)
I think so.
maybe not then. but i could go on about it for hours. bbc have wasted a shocking amount of taxpayers money this and improved very little.
Stir up controversy with Coulthard.
deal.
Hehe, i will do one at the end of the season.
I will be a ble to compare it to arabic pundits and arabic comms after watching the race in dubai :P
Legard made me nearly fall asleep at Singapore.
I don't know about anyone else but I feel he deserves credit for that. To quote Ron Burgundy... I'm not even mad, that's quite impressive.
why do we need that? are we all dailymail readers, can we not have civil conversion without an argument?
They've provided greater pre-race and post-race insight, a choice of audio options without having to turn your radio on and mute the TV, and unprecedented coverage of FP for this country.
Jake is way better than anyone ITV ever had. The forum after the race is great. The only real problems are Legard and EJ
I didn't say I agreed with it.
true :)
The option of multiple camera feeds online is awesome!
No. That's Christine's job
when you say "multiple", you mean one or the other? onboards are nice, but FOM did that, not bbc.
He doesn't annoy me anymore. In fact I barely notice he's there. It's like my brain filters out one narrow frequency and that's sufficient to completely block out mr monotone.
Was that available on ITV? The option of having a race feed, In-car feed and highlights reel is awesome!
The race on its own would do that. Singapore is a stupid circuit that only got the race because they agreed to put it on at night so it would look glittery
BBC did that. The feeds were available before and not used by ITV. BBC decided to use them.
My favourite band have put there new single on the web for free... I dont know how this is supposed to reach the profit stage of the business model, but its an interesting approach
Same here. Though by accident, I've also tuned out Brundle.
bbc could afford to pay for them?
BBC let us see them. ITV never did
They got them free
I have said that since the start of the season. For some reason I pick up the salient points he makes but filter out the anoyance. I didn't realise he was annoying till other people pointed it out
You've just hit the Mute button :-P
did itv get them free though?
Ahhhh, that explains it. :)
No idea. I didn't know the feed existed until BBC put it up
I missed the salient points too. I'll have to take your word for it that there were some.
Seriously, you guys have no idea until you see F1 abroad how much better the english speaking world does F1 coverage. I know the BBC have got a lot wrong, but it's only the first year!
Seconded!!!
Maybe. I thought they were paying less than ITV because it was lumped on them when ITV ended the contract early.
I really like the BBC's coverage, I just don't like Lord Boredom and his counterpart Evil EJ of Jordania.
Nope.
But going to the BBC effectivly ruled out any possibility of selling on secondry premium coverage (bbc has no ads so less diferenciators) So bernie gave them the premium package, i guess in the hope it would grow the sport then he can put it on itv and sky in the future
Fourthed and Fifthed
Neither do I !!!
I like ej. Legard needs to jump though
Given that Evil EJ no doubt discovered Lord Boredom we should focus on him alone.
Such a limited market for the role though if you think about it.
of course. and excuse me for pointing this out... but you chose to flippin' well live there!
yes the bbc are better than many. is that good enough? chuffin' hell no.
To be fair he did invent him
:D
It could be improved, yes. But the only way I can think of improving it is by getting rid of EJ and JL and bringing two new folks in.
I think they should just give the broadcasting rights to Sidepodcast for free and be kind like that
Then I'll wake up
Hehe dont throw things...
but noone will be as good as EJ
Now if we phone voted them for eviction at the next forum, maybe the BBC would get confused and show them the door.
If they are out sourcing we could put in a bid...
(if so shotgun ted role ; )
Good point. Who to replace him with?
i disagree. plenty can be improved. how many decent "features" have we seen this year? i think, one. the force india pitstop thing and we saw that at least 11 times.
we might get another for abu dhabi. it's not exactly groundbreaking coverage though. they walk around the garages and get drowned out by engine noise... where's the on-site studio?
I am merely saying that as a standard, the BBC, ITV, Speed all have good coverage compared to RTL, Danish TV, Italian TV and whoever else.
Do not say that because I don't live in the UK that I cannot contribute to this discussion!
WHOO GOOOES. YOU. DECIDE.
*shudders*
F1 Reality TV. Scary.
Maybe we shouldn't give Bernie ideas.
They promised that? I always thought they were going to be off-site instead.
The problem is money. As a public broadcaster the BBC cant put all that much in.
As a broke broadcaster, ITV couldnt aford to...
Mike Gascoyne was better and h is the only other person they have tried.
Toyota, Renault, you are live on BBC, please do not swear. The next team to 'run out of money' will be....
He cant do it who else?
Ron? Flav? Todt if he looses? *shudders*
On Danish TV they get a chalkboard out. Seriously!
RTL don't do much different from the BBC (from memory ... ask Kathi if that changed).
Another reason I want the Lotus bid to fail.
i'm not saying that at all. what i'm saying is don't let the bbc off the hook so easily.
i understand others have it worse. but i do not care. i know it can be better, and i want it to be better.
having better f1 coverage than antartica doesn't please me one bit.
very true.
If they spent a lot of money on it already, why spend more on a studio? If you're going to be in a studio, why not stay in London? I much prefer them out and around the paddock - if only they'd move out of pitlane when the engines start.
That's not the same as saying they're not doing a better job than ITV though. Do you think they've made a step in the right direction?
Gary Anderson, Jackie Stewart,
oh not Ron, please...
You dont like Lording it up over those pesky penguins?
I love it! (in your beak flappy :P )
They should definitely be pushed to improve. I don't see the onsite studio as an improvement though unless they have a real use for it.
because it's quieter and you can do a lot more. they have one man who follows the team around with a mini-screen that's invisible when the sun comes out. in a studio you can do a whole bunch of cool interactive things.
...and i don't mind if all the team are not at the track. i'd prefer it if they weren't.
:P
But they can do one the spot interviews. Who can forget the Bernie inteview at Singapore?
green screen!! green screen!!
You have said something similar the last time we all discussed this.
My point is, the bar has been set pretty high here, and people in the UK should be thankful that they can have such good coverage on demand whenever they want - and I am talking TV, Internet, Red Button, Radio etc.
I am blown away by all the videos BBC do which ITV never bothered with - the classic Grands Prix are fantastic, Jake's blog is cool, all the video clips appear online very quickly.
Contrast that with the Danish F1 site: http://formel1.tv3.dk/ - it's utter pants!
the lack of ads is a vast step in the right direction. beyond that i really don't think they have, no.
bbc coverage is so good i skip almost all of it and then tune into 5live. it's pointless.
I belive they decided to ban them about 3 or 4 years ago.
BBC wanted one but they were told they couldnt.
Then the show was to be produced with EJ DC and Jake in london with ted and lee doing the groundwork.
Eventually they decided to roam
i agree, they need someone at the track. ideally, brundle and ted. beyond that, i can't say i'd be bothered.
They don't 'bump into' as many people though, any guests have to schlep over to the TV compound which is the only place they are allowed to put a studio... although in fairness I've noticed a growing trend for the interviewee to be waiting for the guys to arrive.
What do the BBC actually pay Lee McK to do by the way?
but so much more. f1 needs graphics. it needs peter snow in front of a swingometer. it needs detailed explanation.
we have none of that sitting on deck chairs in the brawn motorhome.
I expect Jackie was asked, he would be a great though but i cant see him doing it.
gary anderson wouldnt have the same profile... and doesnt he work for setanta?
Argh, my heart just sank a little concerning Rubens...
"I haven't signed with anybody yet, but it's true that I'm talking with Williams and Brawn," he said.
Can someone send me to brazil please so i can give him a hug and tell him the right answer :(
at least i'm consistently wrong ;)
Camp outside the new area where drivers are made to go for interviews after qualifying/race.
tweet.
I wish they'd send DC out with MB on the grid walk more, it works much better and it covers the cringeworthy moments when the only person willing to talk to MB has never seen a motor race in their lives.
No, I see your point - just that the bar is set higher for the English-speaking F1 world.
I forgot to mention we have a studio in copenhagen, but nobody goes near the track. We have no Ted in Denmark - and just that missing means you miss a heck of a lot!
At least your guy is going somewhere.
i'd agree with that.
thus far i believe that was the only grid walk christine watched this year.
I agree but we're always told how good Speed are, and they only have Windsor.
Anyways, as much as I've loved having a good debate, it seems I need to go to bed. So see yas later. Lotsa love.
That's not convincing me that she's good value for money.
Yeah me too - good night guys :)
Night RG
Night Gavin
Night to both..
Good night, I'm off too
She does a lot of the 'donkey work' interviews with drivers we don't necessarily care about but need to hear from.
bye
She stands in crowd and speaks
Yeah, if he can be told to watch his mouth that'd be a good development.
Night RG, Gavin & Maverick
night all.
if janna's still around SP2 installed without a hitch :(
No idea but if he could put some of his AUTOSPORT stuff on TV it would be good
Night RG
absolutely agree. and for that you need a studio.
Night Mav
Would they be allowed to? Newspapers normaly let people go on TV but magazines are often hesitent
Am glad yours worked OK, think I'll just give up & go to bed. 'Night everyone
The problem is with so many tv stations covering it, it is virtually impossible. even if they did sell some space its highly unlikely the BBC could afford it
Night!
night..
ITV's cost a lot of money but I think part of that was the ability to raise itself up to two levels..
aww. g'night.
I was just watching ITV's last broadcast, and I forgot about Ted going into a Brazilian crowd with an English flag, hahahaha!
I am sure he could discuss the same things on TV.
I mean the cost for the plot. I belive they wanted to put it on top of the production office, like they used to do, but the taller structures cause break up on all the wireless signals for other companies which is why they stopped them i think
Night Janna
Yay Rubens spoke to me on twitter! :D
No way!! thats awesome
What did he say?
@rubarrichello Afternoon Rubens :) best of luck this weekend... must be great to be back home in such a great championship position! :D
@lukehmuse it feels great
Nice of him to respond :D Simple things please simple minds!
hehe, i guess that means you are winning 2-1? :P
Well done! Whoop!
nice :-)
It just hit me. Maybe Summerton isn't going to USF1. Maybe USF1 are paying for him to do GP2...
It would be the sensible thing to do
That would do him more good than throwing him into a brand new team in F1
Yeah. I saw his tweet saying he hopes to do "something in Europe" in 2010..
i'm pretty sure lou has seen every pic of jenson ever, but just in case: http://j.mp/QPyFr
specifically this one: http://j.mp/1zwpxG
really, really good f1 pics on there if anyone has five mins to browse.
I recognised the airport before i checked on the other thread *scary*
