Monday is over and done with then, so we're onto Tuesday. Things are ramping up towards Brazil as teams start releasing their preview press releases and we start looking at the weather forecasts. Here are some of the things we're talking about:

  • Donington Park has been given yet another extension to try and prove they can host the race. I can't imagine why, as Bernie has already been quoted as saying it's never going to happen (or words to that effect). When will they admit that it was a foolish idea from the start?
  • Massa has had a go in the F2007 finally, and whilst there are plenty of disagreements in the comments over whether it should have been allowed in the first place, Massa says he's perfectly comfortable back behind the wheel, almost as if nothing had happened.
  • I posted the first of our look at the championship contenders yesterday, starting with Vettel. If you've got thoughts about his season so far, his chances for the title, and where he can go from here, then head on over and post your comments.

That'll do it for now, I reckon. Let us know what you're up to today, although you'll have to go some to beat Alex's impromptu trip to Paris and Lou's 18th birthday yesterday. I'll see you in the comments.

  • Bassano Clapper12/10/2009 at 23:22

Does anyone know how long Amy's flight takes? She has been AWOL for a while

She's changing at Aukland or Wellington isn't she?

She mentioned Te Papa museum which is in Wellington so not sure if she's stopping there for a day or so

  • Nick12/10/2009 at 23:23

    Hello new daily (and Bassano)

    Hey Alison

I was going to whinge about having a long day then i decided I should just deal with it, not being as long as it could've been

  • Bassano Clapper12/10/2009 at 23:25

Think she is also going via Christchurch, I remember it being quite convoluted

Awwww hehehe this seems a lot worse because I've only been doing half time for a few weeks leading up to it. Other people are allowed to whine. I'm just melodramatic.

Yes. That's where the original church was. They have many now all over the world. A lot of people get very upset about them though. They're a pretty controversial church.

As I remember it, there were a lot of accusations of embezzlement a few years ago. A lot of people think they do a lot of things as a money making exercise rather than for evangelism or whatever.

  • Jon Waldock13/10/2009 at 00:11

ok so you may not be able to see the difference...but im trying to make the area between frames the colour inside hte frame...so it's all one continuous block of colour...

this one has the frames as 0 and so they are white

    http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/feeder1-jpg

thisone has the frames as 1 and coloured so that they are the hexidecimal colour shade ive told it to be

sounds like you need to set something like:

    frameborder="0" framespacing="0"

  • Jon Waldock13/10/2009 at 00:16

    frameborder="0" framespacing="0"

it just comes out as the same as the picture with the white gap

  • me13/10/2009 at 00:18

it just comes out as the same as the picture with the white gap

have you added that to all frameset and frame tags? you could also add:

    although that shouldn't be needed.

It did seem a tad biased.

I was especially amused when he muted people he was interviewing and did a voice over untill they said something he could mock!

    My current site lists;

itunes, zune, podnova, newsgator, netvibes, page flakes, my yahoo and google reader

  • Steven Roy13/10/2009 at 00:41

Does this disprove the big bang theory?

No. It's just the effect of gravity. Space is full of things crashing into other things from bits of dust to galaxies. Space is still expanding so the big bang theory still holds. It's just that when something gets caught up in the gravity field of something else there is a chance they will collide

  • Bassano Clapper13/10/2009 at 00:43

What different programs do people use to subscribe to podcasts?

No. It's just the effect of gravity. Space is full of things crashing into other things from bits of dust to galaxies. Space is still expanding so the big bang theory still holds. It's just that when something gets caught up in the gravity field of something else there is a chance they will collide

Hubble has also captured a few images of Galaxies colliding and or interacting: http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2008/04/when-galaxies-c/

How do two bodies which were propelled outwards with an enertia suddenly decide to converge when they should not be loosing momentum and getting further apart?

  • Steven Roy13/10/2009 at 00:46

How do two bodies which were propelled outwards with an enertia suddenly decide to converge when they should not be loosing momentum and getting further apart?

Because the whole time that they have been heading outwards they have been reacting with other bodies. So small galaxies collide to make bigger ones or they get caught up in the gravitational field and get a slongshot that sends them on a different course.

  • Jon Waldock13/10/2009 at 00:48

    Question to all;

If i was to host audio on one site, but link it from another, would the site that the link it's on get that audio added to it's bandwidth? (if that makes sense)

  • Bassano Clapper13/10/2009 at 00:49

as possible ones to subscribe using...these surely all arent used? is it wor putting them all on my new site anyway?

As a guess I would say iTunes & Google Reader

Can you put a poll on your site?

I sort of get what you are saying, but it requires the big bang to be an imperfect explosion, which would appear to be odd

  • Jon Waldock13/10/2009 at 00:50

Can you put a poll on your site?

can do i guess, at the moment theres only rss and itunes, i guess it's easy to add the rss to whatever program your using? i'll stick with google, juice, itunes and rss because it fits nicely on hte page, but will put if there are more feed listeners people use then will add them

  • Bassano Clapper13/10/2009 at 00:51

I am not certain it does. Effectively what we are talking about is innumerable radom collisions and interactions.

  • Nick13/10/2009 at 00:53

    What explosions are perfect?

If it is creating all matter and happening in an enviroment with nothing to effect it... why wouldnt it be perfect?

...unless the galaxy's are moving for another reason...

  • Jon Waldock13/10/2009 at 00:53

    nope.

so basicially sidepodcast gets little (or alot lower) bandwidth, and mediatemple (who i assume is where you store all the podcasts, if not then work with me on this ;) ) has the huge bandwidth?

  • Steven Roy13/10/2009 at 00:58

But what would cause the randomness?

Any one of thousands of things. For ecample just before the big bang you have all the matter in the universe in an infinitesimal volume. Regardles how perfect the explosion the collisions and interactions between all the bits of matter are going to cause random collisions. You have electrical, gravitational, thermal, magnetic, explosive etc etc effects.

  • me13/10/2009 at 00:59

so basicially sidepodcast gets little (or alot lower) bandwidth, and mediatemple (who i assume is where you store all the podcasts, if not then work with me on this ;) ) has the huge bandwidth?

umm no. there is only sidepodcast.com, there is no separate mediatemple site. they just keep the servers running (occasionally). we aren't a great example though because we have CDN's and Torrent servers and all sorts of stuff thrown into the mix.

what are you trying to fathom out?

  • Nick13/10/2009 at 01:02

    Ah, I gettcha.

But what created the previous matter?

  • Jon Waldock13/10/2009 at 01:02

what are you trying to fathom out?

    basically....

i'm moving all my stuff over to podcast machine, and will pay them as and when i need extra bandwidth....

what im currently doing is making this new website and will host it using one of those subdomain accounts and then redirect it using dot.tk like ive been doing....problem is the free accounts usually have lower bandwidth...so im wondering....

if i listened to a podcast on the new website, would the bandwidth usage be taken out of just the podcast machine bandwidth, or that and the website hosting?

  • Bassano Clapper13/10/2009 at 01:05

    Ah, I gettcha.

But what created the previous matter?

This conversation ends with "it's turtles all the way down"

  • jpancoast13/10/2009 at 01:06

    Ah, I gettcha.

But what created the previous matter?

IIUC, when the big bang happened, it hydrogen, deuterium, and Helium (Mostly hydrogen) formed quickly after. These elements combined to form stars and the stars going nova created all the other elements.

There's a nice big bang timeline here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graphical_timeline_of_the_Big_Bang

  • me13/10/2009 at 01:06

if i listened to a podcast on the new website, would the bandwidth usage be taken out of just the podcast machine bandwidth, or that and the website hosting?

if you are using subdomains then you only pay for the bandwidth once. so let's assume:

    - example.com = your website hosted on free account

    - podcast.example.com = you podcast hosted on podcast account

if the html on example.com links to podcast.example.com, it sends the browser off to the podcast subdomain and waves goodbye to that call. example.com has no idea how big the file on podcast.example.com is because it can't see it, so you won't get charged for it.

    that help at all?

  • Jon Waldock13/10/2009 at 01:08

    that help at all?

    i think so...

so what your saying is....when i click on "listen", it's only putting bandwidth on the podcast host, not the website itself?

  • Nick13/10/2009 at 01:08

IIUC, when the big bang happened, it hydrogen, deuterium, and Helium (Mostly hydrogen) formed quickly after. These elements combined to form stars and the stars going nova created all the other elements.

I get the creation afterwards... but i dont understand how the matter there before was created... it is mysterious!

  • Steven Roy13/10/2009 at 01:08

    Ah, I gettcha.

But what created the previous matter?

My theory and it is one that is getting some traction with people who actually know what there are talking about is that the big bang wasn't the big bang it was the big bounce.

Just before the big bang you had an infinite(effectively) amount of matter in an infinitesimal volume and therefore at ultimate density. Common sense says that can only exist for an infinitesimal amount of time so either the matter just popped into existence or it was somewhere else first. Logically what happened is that all the matter we know about existed previously in a more normal volume and was compressed into the small volume presumably by a huge (in mass terms) black hole.

So imagine that the universe expands until it runs out of energy and then contracts to the infinitesimal volume. You get a new big bang and it all starts all over again.

  • me13/10/2009 at 01:08

so what your saying is....when i click on "listen", it's only putting bandwidth on the podcast host, not the website itself?

A creator maybe? I shall depart on that note, otherwise i'll be here for years

Definitely not. The logic behind a creator baffles me. Things that exist like people are too complex therefore they have to be created. So where did the creator come from? Who made it?

That's one of the reasons there are a lot of unknowns. Scientists rarely say something is factual. What they say is this is the current hypothesis and until we can disprove it we will believe that it is accurate.

  • Steven Roy13/10/2009 at 01:27

Why does everything have to be made? Things can just be there, existing

We think they do, but they don't.

We can't get our minds round infinite things, it's just how we are as humans

  • Nick13/10/2009 at 01:29

That doesnt seem logical to me... but i guess there is only so much you can do.

Still seems like a waste of good scientists to use them on hypothesis when there is so much we know that could be worked on

  • jpancoast13/10/2009 at 01:30

There are two approacehes you can take to that. The religious one which says its too complicated so we shouldn't try or the scientific one which says lets find out. It's like the old question about how do you eat an elephant. One bite at a time. We are going to have to eat a lot more elephant before we get a grasp on time, the universe and everything.

  • Jon Waldock13/10/2009 at 01:33

Of course, and i think it's nieve to think that anyone who's even a bit 'religious' just thinks its too complicated and so should try. I think it's amazing what we know, and what we keep finding out, but i don't think they'll ever come a day when we know all the answers.

  • Steven Roy13/10/2009 at 01:34

Everything is hypothesis and attempting to disprove it from fundamental principals to feveloping medecines or anything else. You seek to understand how the flu affects the body, form a hypothesis from your evidence and try to disprove the hypothesis. Eventually if you get things right you get a cure with no side effects.

Analysis, hypothesis and attempt to disprove the hypothesis is the basic principal on which all science is based.

  • Nick13/10/2009 at 01:35

Science is about working on stuff that we don't know.

    Thats what i call phillosophy!

For me science is based on what we know and where we can take it, develop it, use it, know more.

Take alchemy... There was no reason why it should work in existing knowledge, but still many great scientests including newton devoted hours working on it.

If he had been doing science instead, we might live in a very different world.

In any case, i must sleep... I will comment watch from bed for a bit, but i may nod off

  • jpancoast13/10/2009 at 01:40

For me science is based on what we know and where we can take it, develop it, use it, know more.

And with that we'd go nowhere. No computers, no medicine, no physics, no biology, nothing. We didn't know that Germs caused diseases. Good thing we didn't "stick to what we knew"

And Newton WAS doing science. His three laws of motion are quite important to physics. They just didn't know enough at the time to know that Alchemy wasn't going to go anywhere, but they had to try to figure it out.

  • Steven Roy13/10/2009 at 01:41

I really don't want to get into religion because it is divisive but few things have done more to hold back human understanding. Leonardo da Vinci was banned by the church from dissecting bodies because what happens inside a body is God's work and not for us to know. As a result a vast amount of his work was burned. He had figured out blood circulation and had designed an artificial heart valve that is almost identical to those that exist today. How many more people would not have died needlessly if he had been allowed to continue and people had been allowed access to his work? How much farther on would human knowledge be today?

I doubt we will ever know all the answers but we have to keep looking for more knowledge. If we had not understood that dinosaurs existed and when they existed there would be people who still think the world is 6000 years old. If we didn't know what killed the dinosaurs we would not be scanning space looking for rocks that would eventually do the same to us.

The more we learn the better as far as I am concerned.

  • Steven Roy13/10/2009 at 01:44

For me science is based on what we know and where we can take it, develop it, use it, know more.

Science has to look at what we don't know and try to get to know it first though

  • Nick13/10/2009 at 01:45

And Newton WAS doing science. His three laws of motion are quite important to physics. They just didn't know enough at the time to know that Alchemy wasn't going to go anywhere, but they had to try to figure it out.

as I see it they are completly different disciplines. One was based on his interlectual responses to the world he saw from which he developed science. The other was based on hypothetical greed with no theory behind it.

  • Steven Roy13/10/2009 at 01:45

And Newton WAS doing science. His three laws of motion are quite important to physics. They just didn't know enough at the time to know that Alchemy wasn't going to go anywhere, but they had to try to figure it out.

Exactly. Alchemy was a hypothesis that was disproved. A negative result scientifically is as valuable as a positive. It may not be as good for business but in terms of knowledge it has the sam value

  • Steven Roy13/10/2009 at 01:46

as I see it they are completly different disciplines. One was based on his interlectual responses to the world he saw from which he developed science. The other was based on hypothetical greed with no theory behind it.

There is a lot of theory behind it. Lead can be changed into gold. It simply can't be done economically. But to do it an understand it they needed to know about atoms and their structures.

  • Nick13/10/2009 at 01:53

there is now. I remember we had a lesson on it in school. But all the theory is modern. There was nothing at the time to say it would work any more than growing cash from seed

  • Steven Roy13/10/2009 at 01:55

there is now. I remember we had a lesson on it in school. But all the theory is modern. There was nothing at the time to say it would work any more than growing cash from seed

Effectively you need nuclear reactions to do it so no-one at the time had a clue about those.

  • Alex Andronov13/10/2009 at 05:52

there is now. I remember we had a lesson on it in school. But all the theory is modern. There was nothing at the time to say it would work any more than growing cash from seed

Yes... Men and Women doing things when they have no idea if it will work is pretty much what all progress is.

Science is essentially the pursuit of the unknown.

And to say there was no reason to believe it would work is quite wrong. They were all sure it must work. How, they reasoned, could gold come about in the first place. Surely it must be a process that could be repeatable given the right conditions. And it was. And you could say that a large part of science from then to now has been related to discovering how that very process works. (nb. it's much easier if you've got a supanova and a black hole handy :) )

And on a final note. There were a couple of questions about what was before the big bang. Which of course is an issue because of the English language. Time doesn't start until the big bang starts. So you can't have things before time. "Before" doesn't exist, before time exists. Which is what makes it so complicated.

And people will actually read it, simply because he's that controversial. We may not like him, but he might make for a good read. Kinda like the way everyone wants to hear what Nigel Stepney has to say.

How much can we read into this?

Bernie prepared to offer 17 year contract to Silverstone

My conclusions are that Bernie stitched up this Gillett guy to make Silverstone get it's act together - why else would he bend over backwards to help Hockinhalf but not Silverstoned or Done-on-time?

It's probable, like Steven said last night with his comment. Although AUTOSPORT reports the same quotes but doesn't include the part about silverstone's possibilties for the contract.

Indeed. But Gillett really fired up the spin machine yesterday. If it'll mean Silverstone will improve its infrastructure, then that can't be bad, right?

I have a biased interest here - Donington was my local track so I was happy to see it get the Grand Prix. I was optimistic but I quickly realised they were just being used to get to Silverstone.

If Silverstone gets improved that's great - but right now I just want a British Grand Prix - I don't care where in the UK or how!

    Jeremy,

You have picked a good brand that is also quite reasonable on price - I would suggest to you that you should pick the TV you want based on picture quality within your budget.

You might have to look at generic panels if you want cheaper - most panels are made by the same factories anyway, so it should be no bother. I am not sure how reliable they are, however.

When I used to sell TV's, I noticed the following:

Samsung: High-tech and no brand prestige = good price

Sony: Overpriced and underspecced - they don't make their own panels

    Philips: Sharp Picture

Panasonic: Best colour palette and Contrast

Sharp: Middle of the road, expensive

    LG: Same as Philips

Pioneer: Don't know if they make them anymore - best 'cabinet', but expensive. Great picture though.

    Hope that helps...

  • Nick13/10/2009 at 11:48

Yes... Men and Women doing things when they have no idea if it will work is pretty much what all progress is.

I disagree. Sicince is about adcancement, not about magic. It is analysis, thought, creating a hypothesis which can be tested, then experimentation, and finaly understanding results. magic is about jumping up in the air then thinking if you do it enough you will Hover.

And on a final note. There were a couple of questions about what was before the big bang. Which of course is an issue because of the English language. Time doesn't start until the big bang starts. So you can't have things before time. "Before" doesn't exist, before time exists. Which is what makes it so complicated.

Time may or may not not exist, but everything in the laws of physics is based on cause and effect. In order for matte/antimatter and the laws to come into existence it is logical to assume that their was a cause.

Thanks Gav. I have always had Panasonic gear, and I like that they sponsor F1.

Just so you know, Sony do their own panels again now after sharing facilities with Samsung for quite some time. A lot of people don't understand the extra colour technologies Sony invest in (very similar to Apple) and while I agree that some of their models are over priced, it is not true for most of them (unlike a few years ago).

I'll let you know when I finally make a decision. I guess its a close race between a Panasonic plasma and the LED Samsung. Hmmmmmmm.

Fair enough - my opinions are based on a few years ago - good to see they make their own panels... although I am not the biggest Sony fan either (very flashy and overpriced, poor after-sales service to dealers and customers).

I'll let you know when I finally make a decision. I guess its a close race between a Panasonic plasma and the LED Samsung. Hmmmmmmm.

I would recommend and LCD over a Plasma because those things are heavy and they use a lot more power.

He said LED though - not LCD?

My LCD gets very warm and isn't exactly light either - but the thick glass in a Plasma does weigh a ton - I have moved too many of those damn things!

  • RubberGoat (Gavin Brown)13/10/2009 at 12:01

LED? Hmm, is the picture that much better than the Plasma? Because there's nothing wrong with a HD-capable plasma you know... good lifetime, cheaper...

Are they still susceptible to screen burn?

Nope - we left one overnight on a menu screen of a DVD by accident and the next day, after a few minutes of normal running there were no artefacts

    (don't buy display models, kids!)

  • Amy13/10/2009 at 12:02

and the LED ones are even better on power usage and the colours are sharper. Buy buy buy!

  • Jeremy13/10/2009 at 12:03

    Heavy = yes.

Use more power = mostly myth. Their power consumption has more peaks and troughs than a normal LCD (or LED backlit LCD) and competitors tend to pick the highest figure and focus on it.

They both use a lot of power and get about as warm.

The LED TV's may use less power, but are they really worth twice the price? Think how many years of running it would cost to re-coup the savings...

I just know that I love my TV and if I could marry it I would. I'd even take its last name. Just call me Amy XBR.

    Jeremy,

This looks like a good article: http://gadgetwise.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/06/11/whats-an-led-tv/

Aargh! It's all too hard. I'm being a baby about spending many thousands of dollars.

Maybe I should just use the three years interest free offer and pay it off.

*thinks about shuffling money back to ING Direct*

Very good idea - only get interest-free though!

Pay cash = better price than financing. Will have to do sums when I can get exact prices later in the week.

Depends. Interest-free normally only requires a handling fee - which means that if you don't have the cash, it's a good way to get stuff...

  • Amy13/10/2009 at 12:13

    What do you have?

Bravia KDL40XBR which was my bargain of the century because they accidentally sold it to me at a $800 discount and gave me a free $100 HDMI cable too (I heart you JB Hi Fi)

when I moved to Melbourne I promised myself my reward for finding a flat would be a 40 inch TV. I had to pick it up earlier though so I got some funny looks carting it into the backpackers :D

They already had two and people were always watching crappy movies on them so it was quite a party in my room for two nights where we had free reign. Although everyone was British and they wanted to watch Neighbours ;)

Have you watched corrination street now you are back in NZ?

  • Jeremy13/10/2009 at 12:25

I look at it from the interest i can earn with ING.

How much interest will I earn if I leave the money in the bank, versus how much I can save by paying cash (hich I have just sitting there burning a hole in my pocket).

I liked my trick of being told the one I wanted was sold out so here, have the floor model for $800 less with a free HDMI cable and then going back to pick it up later once I had found a friend with a car, and finding out they actually did have a brand new boxed one out the back. Muhaha. It was already on special!

  • Alex Andronov13/10/2009 at 12:32

No no... Monkey Island is completed... I have done some editing... Not enough... but then it was lunch time so I stopped and ate some lunch. And then before I went back I just had a quick check of the comments...

  • Amy13/10/2009 at 12:33

    I said:

Yes... Men and Women doing things when they have no idea if it will work is pretty much what all progress is.

    You said:

Sicince is about adcancement, not about magic. It is analysis, thought, creating a hypothesis which can be tested, then experimentation, and finaly understanding results.

Creating a hypohesis which can be tested is doing thing when you have no idea if they would work. You wouldn't need to test it if you knew.

    Also:

Time may or may not not exist, but everything in the laws of physics is based on cause and effect. In order for matte/antimatter and the laws to come into existence it is logical to assume that their was a cause.

It is logical to assume a cause, but the cause may have happened after the effect. As we see in vacuums, we can observe energy being borrowed from the future.

Just remember Nick. How we perceive the world isn't how the world is. Birds experience time more slowly than us, which is why they always seem to move out of the way of cars later than we can fathom (well often anyway). Butterfly see more colours than we do. The world isn't simply how we perceive it. As Douglas Adams put it, "Time is an illusion, lunch time doubly so".

Sophie was looking concerned. Her father had walked off to get the pay and display ticket and had left her looking out to sea. As she looked out with her Fisher Price telescope she looked between the yachts and dingy. After a while Sophie's eye had fallen on the prow of a large car transporting vehicle. This was what had caused Sophie's concern. Because sitting there on the prow of the vessel was Tinkerbell.

Sophie decided not to wait any longer, and she ran over to her father.

"Dad, dad, there's a fairy on the ferry!"

"Don't be silly girl you couldn't possibly stack one giant car carrying ship on top of another"

"No dad, it's a fairy on a ferry!"

    Afternoon all.

Just finished on a certain MAGAZINE after an early start and have shifted all of 10 metres up the office to work on an Abu Dhabi preview supplement for someone's sponsor.

he was rude to rob this week:

You could make one of those documentaries out of that; "When Satirists Attack"...

i sort of don't care for the comment anyway.

plugging is great when it comes from anyone contributing to the conversation. if you're just going to arrive out of the blue and pimp your site, i say "chuff off".

we don't really want to be a link dump for anyone and everyone do we?

  • me13/10/2009 at 13:54

Now you are worrying me that I am doing that when commenting on other people's blogs. How do you draw the line here?

    good question. i don't know, i really don't.

i love the idea of plugging good people, who have stuff worth seeing. but if lots of peeps start pinging us every time they post blog, and never bother to say anything else... that would get irritating very quickly, right?

  • Lukeh13/10/2009 at 13:54

god no. that would be terrible.

i love the idea of plugging good people, who have stuff worth seeing. but if lots of peeps start pinging us every time they post blog, and never bother to say anything else... that would get irritating very quickly, right?

Definitely not... I think people who want to plug should have a justifiable reason behind it rather than simply coming into the comments and saying 'Hey! Here's my blog, read it'. That's why I rarely blug my own bosts because I wouldn't wanna seem like I just want people to go on it when sometimes I may have things worth sharing and talking about..

I think the community here is luvky because we have some *amazing* bloggers like gavin with blogs worth looking at related to Formula 1 and some staggering analysis but there should be a line. I don't think anyone really goes too far with it though personally

I'm having a quick break... Am over half way through todays pages. Phew.

Had a terrible problem with the word vial like vial of liquid. Kept attempting to go for vile or phile and then after all that I think there may be an alternative spelling which is phile. Now am worried about which is the UK or US version.

Second thing was that I came across a passage written, must have been years ago, where the main character goes on a rant about another character folding over the corners of the pages. Somethings never change!

I have taken out my enormous double volume "Shorter" Oxford English Dictionary. (I think it's shorter in the sense it isn't the 20 volume one).

It has Phial with a definition. But under Vial it says Alt Phial. So I think that means Phial is the original.

Yes that says "alteration of Phial" so I'm going with Phial.

I agree. In this particular case both Twitter & various blogs have meant an injunction which was stopping Parliamentary reporting has been dropped which is good IMO because the media should always be able to report what is said in the House. However, you could easily see another situation where it could be used for a witch hunt with partial or fictitious reporting creating a false story.

  • Journeyer13/10/2009 at 15:20

So the next question is - can Twitter regulate itself? Can people who know the facts correct false or misleading stories by tweeting about it in the same way that false or misleading stories are tweeted?

You could, I assume, create a false rumour on the stock market and send a company into bankruptcy. Although don't try it as false rumours relating to the stock market are a criminal offence even if you don't profit from them.

This problem happened a few years ago when two coppers who were charged with a crime had previous convictions suppressed in order not to jeopardise their case.

The same day they were acquitted, the internet was full of posts saying that the previous convictions were the same type as those they were being tried for, which led to a lot of controversy!

  • me13/10/2009 at 15:25

So the next question is - can Twitter regulate itself? Can people who know the facts correct false or misleading stories by tweeting about it in the same way that false or misleading stories are tweeted?

if the accused was awake and aware of the controversy, and sitting in front of twitter at the time... then maybe.

This has been an issue for awhile, especially with blogs. Something happens, blogs freak out, then the details come out.

Consumers need to become better at filtering out the BS.

  • Journeyer13/10/2009 at 15:28

it depends on how you define recurring tweets. if they mean spam, yeah, it should be good.

the thing is, rumors spread a lot faster in Twitter because it's a lot more public than blogs are. so it can cause chaos a lot quicker.

Yeah, it can get out of hand really quickly. I think it's also tough to distinguish between something likened to a "news organization" and a "consumer" on twitter. A lot of people are both with retweets and all that.

So I think I'm stopping editing for the day now. 41 pages in the can. Which is 1 page ahead of schedule. Because the opening part of the book has been being worked at on and off for almost 9 years it has had a fair old whack of editing in it before. This makes it easier on the one hand, but on the other it does mean I have read it a seriously large number of times which makes it less interesting to read.

  • Alex Andronov13/10/2009 at 16:04

Most surprising thing in today's edit. I have discovered a character is French when introduced. They aren't French at the end of the novel!

Afternoon all, i am back and feeling chlorinated...

Its a shame, i guess they are saving them for a rebrand next season when they are unlikely to replace Ing

You wouldn't think they'd want to draw more attention to the fact they've lost ING and the reasons for doing so by changing the livery for the last two races. Then again, they dedicate podium finishes to Flav so who knows.

I keep saying it, they didn't go back to the factory to replace the colour scheme did they? Went straight to Brazil right. No time surely.

Well there was one week from Singapore to Suzuka but three weeks from Singapore to Interlagos...

And Renault only pulled out when the team was already in Singapore so logistics suggest that Interlagos is the first race that it would be possible for....

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/10/2009 at 17:06

Anyone ever heard of Mark Vermeulen?

He's a Zimbabwe cricketer who was hit in the head with a ball that cracked his skull (like Massa's injury). He made a comeback, but couldn't play as well and ended up getting so angry he burnt the Cricket Academy down.

When they checked him out, doctors had discovered that the blow

to his head had triggered partial complex epilepsy and impulsive behaviour disorder. The story ends well though - he was put on medication, made a comeback and donated all of his fees to the rebuilding of the academy.

The scary part is, what will happen to Massa when he is put under the stress and strain of a Grand Prix? I don't think he's out of the woods yet...

Could well be, i was thinking that earlier. It's not *that* difficult to relivery a car, you just need the new livery and a big hair dryer and a bit of time and patience

  • Jon Waldock13/10/2009 at 17:09

Depends what the man upstairs (that being the owner of Renaultsport, not God) wants

The scary part is, what will happen to Massa when he is put under the stress and strain of a Grand Prix? I don't think he's out of the woods yet...

Impulse control disorders could be very dangerous in a racing driver. hopefully they will have tested for that, although there is only so much you can do. I dont know how common they are from head injuries, i know somone who's brother had one at school. Quite scary

  • RG13/10/2009 at 17:11

Depends what the man upstairs (that being the owner of Renaultsport, not God) wants

I'll be honest and think he wouldn't be too bothered as long as the car isn't showing ING and the other sponsor.

  • Maverick13/10/2009 at 17:12

Surely though Brazil isn't the place to do it?

There was an article about painting the livery in F1 Racing - it was Renault's ironically enough. It's specialist work done back in blighty as the slightest imperfection costs time.

  • Lady Snowcat13/10/2009 at 17:13

The scary part is, what will happen to Massa when he is put under the stress and strain of a Grand Prix? I don’t think he’s out of the woods yet…

    I agree...

I did think that his suggestion that he'd lost the WDC last year because of "Crashgate" and that he'd taken legal advice was a bit unlike his previous personality...

He even mentioned it in the quotes from yesterday's test...

I'll be honest and think he wouldn't be too bothered as long as the car isn't showing ING and the other sponsor.

Not necessarily, it would be a clever move to try and put all this piquet stuff behind them.

All the people involved are gone, as are the main sponsors, a change of livery would say "we know our team did something wrong, but it wasnt the team's fault, we are a new team, we'd like to make this water under the bridge"

  • Nick13/10/2009 at 17:14

Not necessarily, it would be a clever move to try and put all this piquet stuff behind them.

I think they would be better off doing it next season, getting people excited about the prospect of seeing a renault in a 'classic livery' race...

  • Maverick13/10/2009 at 17:14

He's a Zimbabwe cricketer who was hit in the head with a ball that cracked his skull (like Massa's injury). He made a comeback, but couldn't play as well and ended up getting so angry he burnt the Cricket Academy down.

So, as long as Massa doesn't come back and immediately burn down the Renault motorhome, we can assume he's okay?

  • Lady Snowcat13/10/2009 at 17:16

Don’t ya just love how Heikki’s in the winning shirt, and how lewis is in the normal one

  • Kathi13/10/2009 at 17:38

If I remember correctly Kimi should thank Alonso because if the race hadn't been red-flagged he wouldn't have finished so far up.

    Errr...

I think that it all hinged on the number of laps as to whether they went back one or two laps... one lap gave it to Fisi and two to the Kimster...

But if it hadn't been red flagged I think the Kimster would have gone on to win...

  • Kathi13/10/2009 at 17:51

Must still contain a fan to drive the air - a smaller fan admittedly so probably quieter. Otherwise it's just a venturi effect.

There are loads of inventions that are just new applications of an old idea - but these guys were clever enough to refine it for the new use and market t. The rest of us either go wow or just complain it's not a new idea ;)

As i see it, if you have time to produce a tv show you dont care about your business and thus you arent a good businessperson

They are all still growing their businesses. There should be no reason for them to be involved 24/7 unless there are problems. They are getting ideas for new businesses at a rate that can't be equalled any other way. They are also opening doors for themselves. 5 years ago if Duncan or THeo phoned a company in a different area of business they would have struggled to get through to the top people. Now they are the guys from the TV and that breaks down a lot of barriers. Their business gain by them being on the show.

Maybe he built himself one already

Didn't Mythbusters make one out of desk fans and an array of straws?

  • Maverick13/10/2009 at 19:11

Ha, they'll be using it to get around some of the windtunnel limits - as long as the FIA measure at the fan outlet velocity they'll get the extra drawn in air for free!

  • Maverick13/10/2009 at 19:12

Didn't Mythbusters make one out of desk fans and an array of straws?

    What was the myth?

Were they using the straws to smooth/direct the flow? Making it more laminar/polarised?

  • Maverick13/10/2009 at 19:25

You just need 2 fans, just out of sync, so that the buffeting cancels out

Yeah! He's coming from a slightly different angle I think though, as his blog has been running for a while and has built a big following but the page views go dead in winter (as do many..).

We need 19 races with one or no back-to-backs and a 3-week midseason break. Can it be that hard?

It downloads, prepares for installation then says it has an error which, after a bit of investigation, is TRUST_E_NOSIGNATURE 0X800B0100. The site suggests downloading the CheckSUR tool which I finally managed to do but it's not fixed it. I've also tried removing all my security software & downloading it standalone but it just keeps coming up with the same error

    How odd.

Although at the moment games are going out so early both dates are theoretically possible.

People have been getting uncharted 2 delivered this morning and it isnt out untill friday!

Surely the F1 is live or they'd edit out the wait for the stewards' decisions?

  • Lukeh13/10/2009 at 21:16

possibly, although they dont go on strike next week.

I've been emailed by 5 games retailers this week about alternative postage options they're offering! The strikes over the past few weeks have messed up things enough for gameplay, Shopto, Play, etc... RM managed to lose both a game I bought and the replacement copy in the post during it all and I know Shopto at least have given up hope with the RM. Apparently there's strikes at the end of this week as well but I dunno about that.

  • me13/10/2009 at 21:17

ace. i (hearts) david for doing those kinda shows.

  • Maverick13/10/2009 at 21:18

Slightly suspicious that Family Fortunes might not be live unless DC has travelled back in time to tell the us that Grant Bovey said “binoculars” to the question “Name something you’d wear on a nudist beach”

Why not just go down to the shops instead?

New games tend to be cheaper online, whereas local high street shops stock then more expensively/at RRP. You could just go to the shops of course, it's just personal preference.

Although ASDA were selling FIFA 10 in supermarkets on launch day for £25 which is pretty awesome!

Hehe, i will do one at the end of the season.

I will be a ble to compare it to arabic pundits and arabic comms after watching the race in dubai :P

  • Lukeh13/10/2009 at 21:31

jake is good. but eddie is ten times worse than blundell. ted doesn't have his own blog and legard makes me want to vomit.

Legard made me nearly fall asleep at Singapore.

I don't know about anyone else but I feel he deserves credit for that. To quote Ron Burgundy... I'm not even mad, that's quite impressive.

  • me13/10/2009 at 21:31

he's meant to annoy the nuts out of me?

    Stir up controversy with Coulthard.

why do we need that? are we all dailymail readers, can we not have civil conversion without an argument?

  • Pat W13/10/2009 at 21:32

maybe not then. but i could go on about it for hours. bbc have wasted a shocking amount of taxpayers money this and improved very little.

They've provided greater pre-race and post-race insight, a choice of audio options without having to turn your radio on and mute the TV, and unprecedented coverage of FP for this country.

  • Steven Roy13/10/2009 at 21:32

There has to be more than that - walking and talking, featurettes are good - forum is a good idea...

Jake is way better than anyone ITV ever had. The forum after the race is great. The only real problems are Legard and EJ

  • RG13/10/2009 at 21:32

why do we need that? are we all dailymail readers, can we not have civil conversion without an argument?

    I didn't say I agreed with it.

    true :)

The option of multiple camera feeds online is awesome!

  • Steven Roy13/10/2009 at 21:33

he's meant to annoy the nuts out of me?

    No. That's Christine's job

  • me13/10/2009 at 21:33

The option of multiple camera feeds online is awesome!

when you say "multiple", you mean one or the other? onboards are nice, but FOM did that, not bbc.

  • Maverick13/10/2009 at 21:34

Legard made me nearly fall asleep at Singapore.

He doesn't annoy me anymore. In fact I barely notice he's there. It's like my brain filters out one narrow frequency and that's sufficient to completely block out mr monotone.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/10/2009 at 21:34

The option of multiple camera feeds online is awesome!

when you say "multiple", you mean one or the other? onboards are nice, but FOM did that, not bbc.

Was that available on ITV? The option of having a race feed, In-car feed and highlights reel is awesome!

  • Steven Roy13/10/2009 at 21:34

Legard made me nearly fall asleep at Singapore.

The race on its own would do that. Singapore is a stupid circuit that only got the race because they agreed to put it on at night so it would look glittery

  • Pat W13/10/2009 at 21:34

when you say "multiple", you mean one or the other? onboards are nice, but FOM did that, not bbc.

BBC did that. The feeds were available before and not used by ITV. BBC decided to use them.

  • Nick13/10/2009 at 21:34

My favourite band have put there new single on the web for free... I dont know how this is supposed to reach the profit stage of the business model, but its an interesting approach

  • me13/10/2009 at 21:35

BBC did that. The feeds were available before and not used by ITV. BBC decided to use them.

bbc could afford to pay for them?

  • Steven Roy13/10/2009 at 21:35

when you say "multiple", you mean one or the other? onboards are nice, but FOM did that, not bbc.

BBC let us see them. ITV never did

  • Nick13/10/2009 at 21:36

bbc could afford to pay for them?

    They got them free

  • Steven Roy13/10/2009 at 21:36

He doesn't annoy me anymore. In fact I barely notice he's there. It's like my brain filters out one narrow frequency and that's sufficient to completely block out mr monotone.

I have said that since the start of the season. For some reason I pick up the salient points he makes but filter out the anoyance. I didn't realise he was annoying till other people pointed it out

  • Maverick13/10/2009 at 21:36

Same here. Though by accident, I've also tuned out Brundle.

You've just hit the Mute button :-P

  • me13/10/2009 at 21:36

did itv get them free though?

  • RG13/10/2009 at 21:37

    Ahhhh, that explains it. :)

  • Steven Roy13/10/2009 at 21:37

No idea. I didn't know the feed existed until BBC put it up

  • Maverick13/10/2009 at 21:38

I have said that since the start of the season. For some reason I pick up the salient points he makes but filter out the anoyance. I didn't realise he was annoying till other people pointed it out

I missed the salient points too. I'll have to take your word for it that there were some.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/10/2009 at 21:38

Seriously, you guys have no idea until you see F1 abroad how much better the english speaking world does F1 coverage. I know the BBC have got a lot wrong, but it's only the first year!

Seriously, you guys have no idea until you see F1 abroad how much better the english speaking world does F1 coverage. I know the BBC have got a lot wrong, but it's only the first year!

    Seconded!!!

  • Pat W13/10/2009 at 21:39

bbc could afford to pay for them?

Maybe. I thought they were paying less than ITV because it was lumped on them when ITV ended the contract early.

  • Lukeh13/10/2009 at 21:39

Seriously, you guys have no idea until you see F1 abroad how much better the english speaking world does F1 coverage. I know the BBC have got a lot wrong, but it's only the first year!

I really like the BBC's coverage, I just don't like Lord Boredom and his counterpart Evil EJ of Jordania.

  • Nick13/10/2009 at 21:39

did itv get them free though?

    Nope.

But going to the BBC effectivly ruled out any possibility of selling on secondry premium coverage (bbc has no ads so less diferenciators) So bernie gave them the premium package, i guess in the hope it would grow the sport then he can put it on itv and sky in the future

  • Nick13/10/2009 at 21:40

Such a limited market for the role though if you think about it.

It could be improved, yes. But the only way I can think of improving it is by getting rid of EJ and JL and bringing two new folks in.

  • Lukeh13/10/2009 at 21:44

It could be improved, yes. But the only way I can think of improving it is by getting rid of EJ and JL and bringing two new folks in.

I think they should just give the broadcasting rights to Sidepodcast for free and be kind like that

    Then I'll wake up

  • Nick13/10/2009 at 21:44

It could be improved, yes. But the only way I can think of improving it is by getting rid of EJ and JL and bringing two new folks in.

  • Nick13/10/2009 at 21:45

i disagree. plenty can be improved. how many decent "features" have we seen this year? i think, one. the force india pitstop thing and we saw that at least 11 times.

we might get another for abu dhabi. it's not exactly groundbreaking coverage though. they walk around the garages and get drowned out by engine noise... where's the on-site studio?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/10/2009 at 21:45

of course. and excuse me for pointing this out... but you chose to flippin' well live there!

I am merely saying that as a standard, the BBC, ITV, Speed all have good coverage compared to RTL, Danish TV, Italian TV and whoever else.

Do not say that because I don't live in the UK that I cannot contribute to this discussion!

  • Lukeh13/10/2009 at 21:45

Now if we phone voted them for eviction at the next forum, maybe the BBC would get confused and show them the door.

  • Nick13/10/2009 at 21:46

i disagree. plenty can be improved. how many decent "features" have we seen this year? i think, one. the force india pitstop thing and we saw that at least 11 times.

The problem is money. As a public broadcaster the BBC cant put all that much in.

As a broke broadcaster, ITV couldnt aford to...

  • Steven Roy13/10/2009 at 21:46

but noone will be as good as EJ

Mike Gascoyne was better and h is the only other person they have tried.

  • RG13/10/2009 at 21:47

Maybe we shouldn't give Bernie ideas.

Toyota, Renault, you are live on BBC, please do not swear. The next team to 'run out of money' will be....

  • Nick13/10/2009 at 21:47

On Danish TV they get a chalkboard out. Seriously!

RTL don't do much different from the BBC (from memory ... ask Kathi if that changed).

  • RG13/10/2009 at 21:47

i'm not saying that at all. what i'm saying is don't let the bbc off the hook so easily.

having better f1 coverage than antartica doesn't please me one bit.

  • me13/10/2009 at 21:47

    very true.

we might get another for abu dhabi. it's not exactly groundbreaking coverage though. they walk around the garages and get drowned out by engine noise... where's the on-site studio?

If they spent a lot of money on it already, why spend more on a studio? If you're going to be in a studio, why not stay in London? I much prefer them out and around the paddock - if only they'd move out of pitlane when the engines start.

  • Maverick13/10/2009 at 21:48

i understand others have it worse. but i do not care. i know it can be better, and i want it to be better.

  • Steven Roy13/10/2009 at 21:50

i'm not saying that at all. what i'm saying is don't let the bbc off the hook so easily.

They should definitely be pushed to improve. I don't see the onsite studio as an improvement though unless they have a real use for it.

  • me13/10/2009 at 21:50

If they spent a lot of money on it already, why spend more on a studio?

because it's quieter and you can do a lot more. they have one man who follows the team around with a mini-screen that's invisible when the sun comes out. in a studio you can do a whole bunch of cool interactive things.

...and i don't mind if all the team are not at the track. i'd prefer it if they weren't.

  • me13/10/2009 at 21:50

having better f1 coverage than antartica doesn't please me one bit.

You have said something similar the last time we all discussed this.

My point is, the bar has been set pretty high here, and people in the UK should be thankful that they can have such good coverage on demand whenever they want - and I am talking TV, Internet, Red Button, Radio etc.

I am blown away by all the videos BBC do which ITV never bothered with - the classic Grands Prix are fantastic, Jake's blog is cool, all the video clips appear online very quickly.

Contrast that with the Danish F1 site: http://formel1.tv3.dk/ - it's utter pants!

  • me13/10/2009 at 21:52

That's not the same as saying they're not doing a better job than ITV though. Do you think they've made a step in the right direction?

the lack of ads is a vast step in the right direction. beyond that i really don't think they have, no.

bbc coverage is so good i skip almost all of it and then tune into 5live. it's pointless.

  • Nick13/10/2009 at 21:52

    where's the on-site studio?

I belive they decided to ban them about 3 or 4 years ago.

BBC wanted one but they were told they couldnt.

Then the show was to be produced with EJ DC and Jake in london with ted and lee doing the groundwork.

    Eventually they decided to roam

  • me13/10/2009 at 21:52

But they can do one the spot interviews. Who can forget the Bernie inteview at Singapore?

i agree, they need someone at the track. ideally, brundle and ted. beyond that, i can't say i'd be bothered.

  • Pat W13/10/2009 at 21:53

because it's quieter and you can do a lot more. they have one man who follows the team around with a mini-screen that's invisible when the sun comes out. in a studio you can do a whole bunch of cool interactive things.

They don't 'bump into' as many people though, any guests have to schlep over to the TV compound which is the only place they are allowed to put a studio... although in fairness I've noticed a growing trend for the interviewee to be waiting for the guys to arrive.

  • Maverick13/10/2009 at 21:53

What do the BBC actually pay Lee McK to do by the way?

  • me13/10/2009 at 21:53

    green screen!! green screen!!

but so much more. f1 needs graphics. it needs peter snow in front of a swingometer. it needs detailed explanation.

we have none of that sitting on deck chairs in the brawn motorhome.

  • Nick13/10/2009 at 21:53

    Gary Anderson, Jackie Stewart,

I expect Jackie was asked, he would be a great though but i cant see him doing it.

gary anderson wouldnt have the same profile... and doesnt he work for setanta?

  • Lukeh13/10/2009 at 21:54

Argh, my heart just sank a little concerning Rubens...

I wish they'd send DC out with MB on the grid walk more, it works much better and it covers the cringeworthy moments when the only person willing to talk to MB has never seen a motor race in their lives.

No, I see your point - just that the bar is set higher for the English-speaking F1 world.

I forgot to mention we have a studio in copenhagen, but nobody goes near the track. We have no Ted in Denmark - and just that missing means you miss a heck of a lot!

The problem is with so many tv stations covering it, it is virtually impossible. even if they did sell some space its highly unlikely the BBC could afford it

ITV's cost a lot of money but I think part of that was the ability to raise itself up to two levels..

I was just watching ITV's last broadcast, and I forgot about Ted going into a Brazilian crowd with an English flag, hahahaha!

I am sure he could discuss the same things on TV.

I mean the cost for the plot. I belive they wanted to put it on top of the production office, like they used to do, but the taller structures cause break up on all the wireless signals for other companies which is why they stopped them i think

It just hit me. Maybe Summerton isn't going to USF1. Maybe USF1 are paying for him to do GP2...

It would be the sensible thing to do

That would do him more good than throwing him into a brand new team in F1

Yeah. I saw his tweet saying he hopes to do "something in Europe" in 2010..
