- It was time for a bit of Friday Fun yesterday, and although the name does kind of tie the game to a specific day, there aren't really any rules on that. If you haven't had a go already, let us know your mix and match drivers - which bits of which drivers would you take to make the perfect guy?
- We also pointed you in the direction of the latest goings on at Red Bull, namely a chance to have your say in some awards, plus a look at the latest Wings for Life charity auction. There's not much I would be willing to bid on in the auction, but it's definitely worth having a look, even if you haven't got a penny to part with.
- Don't forget that it is the second Sidepodfilmclub evening tonight with the chosen film the Disney/Pixar great Cars. We hope to see you around in the comments ahead of the film starting at 8pm. It should be great!

Finally I found something in the Czech news on that F1 in Prague story. It does look like the whole thing is based on what Mr Charouz said to autosport. (And that is not the first time he said something about F1 in Prague - first time was in 2006 and the track was to be ready in 2009 ... They haven't even started digging ...)
So, this new story is ridiculed by Czech media ...
Charouz is a guy with motorosport background though, former racer himself, he manages career of Tomas Enge and his son was in A1GP and recently tested GP2 (last week in Paul Ricard). But he is hardly a man able to secure F1 race ...

There are several reasons Macca would choose Jenson.....
1. They get a No. 1 on their cars, although it would be funny to see Lewis as No.2
2. He's cheap
3. Lewis much, much, prefers the idea of Jenson to Kimi
From a supporters point of view it will make Macca universally hated outside the UK (and with some inside Britain too.....) as a soley British team.....
The last time they bought the No.1 it only led to strife.... you'd have thought they would have learned their lesson....
If Jenson does move to McLaren, it will be very interesting to see how he fares versus Lewis, and versus whoever becomes team leader at Brawn. If, for example, Lewis beats him, and they both get beaten by a Brawn driver to the title, Jenson's F1 career is more or less finished.
If there's one thing Jenson should've learned by now, it's to not overcomplicate his contract negotiations... I sincerely hope he hasn't forgetten Buttongate I and II just 4-5 years ago...

At the many races I have been to this year it's been very very clear....
At the two races I went to in the last 2 years (Singapore and Malaysia), Lewis was clearly #1, with Jenson #2, and Kimi #3, just ahead of Felipe.

I think that is a bit harsh. I will admit that Jenson's contract dispute was not complementary, but look at how well Jenson worked with his team mate this year. He is a genuinely nice guy. In contrast I personally find Kimi very rude and disrespectful to the industry that actually provides the vast incomes these guys make. I think the idea of Lewis and Jenson together would be a fantastic prospect (obviously I would prefer Nick, but that is just bias on my part and based on the fact that he is good driver and a very professional one).

Of McLaren, Kimi, Brawn, and Jenson, it's the current World Champion who has the most to lose, oddly enough. He might end up with less than he started with. If Kimi decided to give way to McLaren's request (although I think it's unlikely), and he and McLaren end up making a deal, Jenson will have to beg Ross to give him a seat.

Jenson lead the championship from the start, won more races than any other driver this year and more than either Kimi or Lewis won in their championship years and proved he could overtake. Actually it seems that Brawn stopped developing the car when Button and the team had a clear lead so I do not think you can say he faded either, simply from mid year onwards other teams were better.
But there is that small issue of Rubens beating him in points from GBR on, which is why I think the fading argument is valid.

Kimi and Jenson both won 6 races in their championship years. I'm not even going to get into races being gifted because any team in that situation would do it. Kimi won his races throughout the year, and also was on the podium 6 other times, ie, twice what Jenson was this year. Kimi can clearly overtake, he's won from 17th.

I think there are multiple explanations here. Firstly Rubens is actually a very good and prized driver. If I were a team I would love to have his skills in my team. Secondly Brawn made changes to the brakes which suited Ruben's softer pedal (Jenson uses a harder touch). Jenson had a good lead, and in part he played it safe as a strategy. I think the team faded more than Button did. I do think Button's fading is greatly exaggerated.

You have a point about the two races. I am also sure if the braking systems had suited Rubens earlier in the season Jenson might not be World Champion. Still it is raced over a season and it is the best overall driver and this year Jenson did more convincingly than many previous drivers.

Well its not a matter of opinion when it comes to amount of PR work. Kimi simply does not want to be bothered with it and Jenson (like Lewis) does usually give value in that area. There is rift between Button and Brawn which I think explains Jenson's recent non appearance at Brawn celebrations and I think it is sad. Jenson is also not asking the humongous amounts that Kimi is wanting so he is better value. Brawn's offer is 4 million pounds so there is no chance of Kimi joining that team.
Unless of course Mercedes is willing to pay for Kimi, but not for Jenson.
Mercedes have already picked up the tags for Nico. The second driver is for Brawn's account.

Sure but Massa has some mechanical problems when in a strong points scoring situation earlier in the season. Up to his accident Massa scored 22 points versus Kimi's 10 points. In the last three seasons if calculated per race Felipe has scored more points than any other driver and Kimi is third.
In and of itself, I didn't think too much of it (the guy was on a well-deserved vacation). But when he finds time to visit Woking less than a week later, something's up.

I am of the opinion that next year the best car will be the McLaren followed by Red Bull. I think Ferrari will do better than Brawn (especially if they are without either of their 2009 drivers). I would like Jenson to compete in the best car and to be respected by the team. Macca certainly could double the offer Brawn has made and they would have "number 1" on their cars.

I really think the press has more of the rift between Mercedes and McLaren. Mercedes want to have more control than McLaren currently given them or is reflected in their current contract with the team. I do not see major changes next year. Norbert Haug has said as much. If Mercedes could really influence McLaren they would be getting Nick in. Nick is a very distant third or fourth or fifth choice as I am not sure Kovy is not completely out of the picture.

I actually would like to see what Heikki could do without being in the shadow of Lewis. For both Jenson and Kimi (and any other driver who might get the second seat) Lewis has a huge advantage. I do not see any driver displacing Lewis as the number 1 driver (and delivering the points), the second seat is a second-place position.

I know you see it that way. A lot of people do not see it that way. You and I are probably the only two on this forum that would give Nick at least equal value to Robert. If you examine all aspects of their driving they produce incredible similar times and results (especially during 2009) despite being polar opposites in their driving style. Both Nick and Robert are hard working and committed, but Nick less vocal when the car is not to his suiting.

Kimi was in front at Monaco and had got Ferrari their first points and podium of 2009... after that he outqualied Felipe in Turkey and Silverstone...
Felipe's one stopper in Silverstone meant he wasn't affected by the Trulli train and in Germany Kimi had to retire....
So Hungary was not a turning point at all...

One has to look at the overall picture - Massa had at least one unfortunate retirement when in a strong position. In qualifying they are evenly matched but Massa still returned more points per race this season (and has done so against Kimi for most of their time as team mates).
Thats what the points table says that is what decides who wins races and championships.
Although that said, Raikkonen did win a title, and Massa was unable to do so.

But let's take things into consideration - Nick's been around for 10 seasons now, while Kobayashi's been around for 2 races. If Nick was going to do something absolutely spectacular, like many great drivers do, he's had lots of time to do it by now. Kobayashi, on the other hand, wasted no time doing spectacular things. No wonder people feel that way.
I guess Kimi's win at Brazil being handed to him by Felipe does not account but secure his title? I held back but Kimi first win of 2007 season was in an illegal car so his WDC is debatable.
I really like Nick, I think he's a nice guy and I'd love to see him win a race, but the way you speak about him reminds me of the way Nick speaks about Abu Dhabi ;)
I like Nick as much as you like Heikki. If Nick had be in Jenson's car this year I am sure he would be one of the stars of the season. Despite not having the best car these last three seasons he is the fifth highest scoring driving. With respect Kumua has only raced twice and when they both finished Nick was ahead.
He's dragged a rubbish Ferrari to it's first points podium and win in a car suited to Felipe's style and not his..... and despite zero development the minute Felipe went on sick leave plus knowing he was not driving for them next season he kept the team in the hunt for third place against all odds....
He is a terrific driver in a great car and in a rubbish car... whilst some well respected drivers would be miles behind if the car didn't work with their style Kimi has put up and shut up...
He's never moaned or whined.... he just does the business whether he's set on fire or the team botch his pit stop or his tyres etc etc...
He never lies or plays things unfairly.... he never bitches about other drivers....
None of his wins were as a result of bad stewards decisions ....
He's lost out loads to mechanical failure not of his making....
I could go on for hours and hours....

I like Nick because he is so stylish as a racing driver (that does not mean he is the fastest) and because he is simply a nice guy who has no ego and is partnered to a nice but ordinary looking person and he is a great daddy. He thinks about things like global poverty and helps out financially with projects to provide clean water to disadvantaged communities. Oh and he grew a beard simply because he got tired of shaving in the mornings and left it.

Thanks Kathi, I happen to know that Nick's height seems to vary a lot. When in Germany I saw him for real and he is actually very tiny - I think 165 is the official height but in reality he is about 163 cm. I was right about Timo being rather small. Of course Anthony Davidson is the smallest current F1 driver (as he is/was the reserve Brawn driver) at 162 cm and 55 kg. Le Seb is 179 and 72 kg and Jaime 181 and 65 kg.

The problem with that is, each car uses a different amount of fuel... some drivers use less than others.... all of which effect performance
It should be easy when you have made the rules. I just making the rules up. Essentially it is worked again what you could reasonably expect the car to deliver in terms of times and how grid places can be made up.

It is only to set targets - a bigger problem is the only real constant is one team mate against another and so when you have Alonso against Piquet he will also appear better than he may indeed be due to the other driver being rubbish. I think I have a solution that will reduce this bias.

Afternoon all.
What a bummer. I should have known better than try and get this computer working - it's from my parents in law. The computer was in German so I had to find a windows XP disk to reinstall into Danish (it's for my sister-in-law). Not much bloody use this computer is without the internet though!
Trying to fins SiS drivers is a bit of a nightmare - I ended up by buying separate graphics Nvidia card for an entire lab cos we could could not get drivers properly configured. It was worth it in the end though.

We had to run open GL compatibility so we had no choice. You are not needing 3-d so there should be a way around using simple Vesa standards configurations. Do you a local computer shop - sometime those guys can amaze you when it comes to setting up older PCs?
The alternative is to find a cheap or second-hand video card that does have its drivers.
Oh F.. It! There's a perfectly working (but old) computer sitting at their house anyway!!!

um... Linux is not as fussy on its drivers and uses more generic. I am at working looking at a whole lot of old "donated computers" half which are e-waste and by swapping power supplies, hard drives etc can get the other half working. I agreed to do this if I could put Linux on and even then I had to try about 10 flavours till I found a Linux that would work on these old PCs but still look at bit Windows like for users. I hate working with old computers - it is such a waste of time cos you know they are going to pack up fairly soon.

Like you I would prefer Jenson to stay at Brawn. There is a chance it will be a better car next for Jenson to defend his position. My insider at Macca says no one really knows but they do some people fancy the idea of an all-British team having the last two World Champions - something about getting back at Mercedes.

Well. Now I have managed to find an ethernet driver that works, but the installer for the internet connection can't connect to the router!
To be honest that was said a little while ago Ross has said more recently that he cannot given Jenson the 6-8 million pounds he wants but they will give him more freedom with personal sponsorships. Reading between the lines Brawn is still struggling to get key sponsors (I know one has had to pull out being liquor based after Brawns 99% message and Virgin is not renewing). If rumours have truth Brawn have offered 4 million and Jenson currently gets 3.1 million pounds.

Very good indeed, I agree that the US version is better in many ways.
To upload a theme you have on say, your desktop or whatever, you need ftp access.
Otherwise, you can go to the theme section in the admin pages and do it there instead.
the themes called small-magazine, so its in this bit in the ftp folder

Now you need to go to themes in admin and you should see it there with the option to activate.

The only place wordpress will look is the wp-content/themes/ folder and so that's where you have to put your new theme - and the new theme should have it's own folder in there
Can you not go into the theme section in admin and search for the theme you want? It will do all the background stuff for you if you do it that way.
When i go to themes theres only 70 odd themes, the one i want is one ive downloaded from elsewhere

If you read my original comment I said ‘from memory’. I didn’t go back and check the precise comment or any of the exchanges I have had with Mr Maitland. Since he is often reporting stories in languages he doesn’t speak you have to question how he assesses their veracity or the degree of speculation involved. This man has no more idea of what is really going on than any serious enthusiast and indeed he has less than many people I know.
My motives are very simple. I am not a journalist. I don’t run a website. Despite many people pushing me to do so I do not have a blog. I am a motor sport fan and that is all. I comment on F1 on a number sites although of late that number has decreased but I hope only temporarily.
My objection to GMM is very simple. I am totally and utterly fed up reading things that turn out to be complete bull. Some people believe those stories and use them as the basis of an opinion that turns out to be completely false.
To me sites run by fans should not be reporting news as fans have no ability to say what is true or false. Fan run sites should be about opinion, history and when discussing the news should link to proper authoritative sources. I have wasted hours discussing stories in the past that turned out to be baseless.
At the start of this year I was involved in a discussion about a statement supposedly made by the Mercedes board which GMM had translated from the utterly unreliable Bild. Needless to say all the sites who finance GMM carried this story and it gained legs as a result. Eventually someone commented on James Allen’s site asking why he was so far behind on this when everyone knew it was true. He picked up his phone and called Mercedes who said it was complete bull and killed the story stone dead.
All the people in any way involved in the discussion of that topic which spread round many sites just wasted their time because someone in the vicinity of Adelaide has convinced gullible people to donate money to him in return for a pile of magic beans.
It’s funny when GMM is discussed there is always one person who turns up to defend them. Use your own name Andy. Don’t hide behind a pseudonym.
Let’s imagine that the pieces that I would classify as ‘highly speculative’ turn out to be totally untrue 6 times out of 10,
You have to wonder why someone running a news service doesn’t know how often his highly speculative stories prove to be accurate and is not trying to find ways to improve it. It’s called quality control and is a staple aspect of all -well nearly all- businesses.
It is the easiest thing in the world to calculate the percentages but that needs effort and Andy is not keen on that beyond ctrl+c followed by ctrl+v with the possible inclusion of a bit of online translation.

There is no mention surprisingly of highly speculative stories or complete bull.
It makes no difference financially to me whether people give their hard earned money to this shyster. You have to ask what it is you are paying for when you can link for free to stories on reputable sites. If you are paying for GMM stories run your own statistics on him. Work out the accuracy of the stories he supplies and the stories that pass your own filtering process. Please do not support GMM as it will only encourage copycats and make it harder to find the truth from the bull.
I ran my own stats when GMM was first pointed out to me. I started reading his stories and on first read saying whether I thought they were true or false. Guess what. I turned out to be more accurate than him and I have no inside information. Try it for yourself.

So friends often link me news stories which are just bloody crap from that lot, I have to tell them, thats GMM, thats 9/10 going to be wrong. It annoys me to think I have something to post, to put an opinion on, and then find out its useless old junk. Or, made up junk. It's a common style of g to complete the loop - Times New Roman, Book Antiqua, Garmond etc. It's much more stylised than Google though - they use a font called Catull

Things are going ridiculously well with less than two days till the launch. Everything is right on target and weather for the launch site is still 90%. Weather is also looking good for the trans-Atlantic abort sites. The only potential fly in the ointment is high seas in the area where the solid rocket boosters will land after they are jettisoned.
Going to bed, ot a headache #blamegmm so packing it in. Game tomorrow and may have a full one so sleep required. lotsa love.

The fireworks were stunning! I've not seen fireworks like that before, the bonfire was also huge!!!!
Fireworks was last weekend. Does anyone else think it's sad that fireworks are set off over an extended period around the 5th November and again at New Year. When I was young, we got fireworks on the 5th November or the 6th if the 5th was a Sunday (apparently you're not supposed to celebrate the execution of a Catholic on the sabbath).
How are people supposed to know when to keep their pets inside?

actually no, itvwas kinda windy, but no rain, just lots of mud. It was even slightly mild. The worst part of the evening was the cramped journey home. There were many many drunk and angry people trying to kill each other.... We didn't enjoy that bit.

this was a town fireworks thing, which stems from medival town rivalry, there was a torch lit parade and everything. Not really anything to do with nov5th. But I understand and agree with your point.
