Friday at last and we have survived another week. It was quite a busy day on Sidepodcast yesterday as we told you some of our plans for the off season, and then came up with a brand new plan as well. It's all go here, I tell ya! Meanwhile, here are some of the things we're talking about:

  • We had our first breakout thread for a while yesterday as the FIA kicked off about the leaking of yet more information regarding Briatore. This isn't the first time they've said that leaking is bad, but what are they actually doing about it?
  • Joe reported on his blog that the FIA would be looking at overtaking (perhaps instead of leaking?) and they were assembling a crack team of consultants including Michael Schumacher and Hermann Tilke. Oh dear.
  • F1 Wolf has a post looking at the new Brawn merchandise now that they can scrawl Champions all over everything. I don't quite understand why Button's hat is completely different to the rest of the stuff, but if I had to have anything, I'd have that. Less highlighter, more blue. Good stuff.

That'll do it for now. As ever, let us know what you have planned for this weekend, particularly if it is exciting, but even if it isn't. We always like to know! I will see you in the comments.

XP. For some reason my computer decided it had had enough of the internet so refused to talk to it. Tried kicking assorted items to no avail. Switched it off and back on again (IT training 101) and all is well again

Is it normal to have bikes and cars on the same bill?

good man. more of the same tomorrow?

  • Pat W13/11/2009 at 00:53

I doubt anyone will turn up, but this could be interesting... http://www.yas...irst-ever-histor.html

You should go to that, you think they'd take it easy in these historic cars but they don't! The only classics race I've been to was a sports/touring meeting at Castle Coombe, it was fun, the most relaxed race meeting I've ever attended. It was like a BTCC atmosphere without the competitive pressure.

  • Steven Roy13/11/2009 at 00:53

Is it normal to have bikes and cars on the same bill?

No. The safety requirements are very diffrent usually

  • Nick13/11/2009 at 00:54

Im also wondering if they use the skycrane for the national meet, or have more regular ones...

  • Nick13/11/2009 at 00:54

No. The safety requirements are very diffrent usually

    Interesting

  • Pat W13/11/2009 at 00:55

good man. more of the same tomorrow?

I'm going to resume my Catch-Up series, which is something I did last year. I have no idea if that's a good idea or not. Basically writing short bits on all the other racing I've been watching. Problem is I've barely started writing them and I still don't know whether to do notes or summaries.

  • Jon Waldock13/11/2009 at 00:56

No. The safety requirements are very diffrent usually

    Interesting

I've only ever seen the 2 people bikes (the ones where one sits and one leans, name escapes me) at a car meaning before. it was either DTM, A1GP or WTCC, i forget

    sidecars

    thats the one!

  • Steven Roy13/11/2009 at 00:57

    Interesting

Normally any barrier that a bike can reach will have a soft cover on it to minimise the effects of a rider hitting it whereas with cars if they hit a hard barrier its no big deal

  • Steven Roy13/11/2009 at 00:59

The closest I have seen was karts at a car meeting at Ingliston many years ago and I think one of the kart drivers was seriously injured despite hundreds of hay bales appearing before the karts tok to the track.

  • Jon Waldock13/11/2009 at 01:00

Normally any barrier that a bike can reach will have a soft cover on it to minimise the effects of a rider hitting it whereas with cars if they hit a óhard barrier its no big deal

I agree with that in theory, but theres no reason why they can't run bikes on car meetings from a safety point of view, they dont change the barriers at brands etc for diff meetings

I'm not sure that's true. As Steven says, I'm sure they put something softer in strategic places for bikes

  • Nick13/11/2009 at 01:11

I'm not sure that's true. As Steven says, I'm sure they put something softer in strategic places for bikes

Couldnt they have that in place all the time/ whilst the cars are running on the day?

There is a chance they could be damaged, but would they pose problems for the cars?

  • Steven Roy13/11/2009 at 01:13

Couldnt they have that in place all the time/ whilst the cars are running on the day?

If you have something like an inflatable barrier a car hitting it could damage it and anything that is soft enough to cushion 70kg of bike rider is going to have no effect on half a ton of race car.

  • Pat W13/11/2009 at 01:13

There is a chance they could be damaged, but would they pose problems for the cars?

I'm not sure of the design. There's a danger cars could hit head on and flip over whereas a hard barrier would deflect them.

go on hit us with it :)

    You'll regret this!

You wouldn’t believe what happened to me on the train this morning.

After waiting patiently to take my seat because the trolley lady was serving someone (how’s that for bad timing?), I chose a window seat where this guy who I have sat next to a lot was sitting in the aisle (there was no-one else in there). The Danish trains arrange a block of four seats facing each other, so a Window and aisle both sides. I think I clipped his feet or something because they were stretched over to the other side. But it was only a small contact and he was asleep, so I didn’t say anything.

Anyway, when we got close to arriving in Copenhagen, I started to get ready etc. I definitely made sure not to clip his feet again, yet when I sat down with my jacket on he started talking quite excitedly at me – so much so I had to get him to repeat what he said three times. He accused me of treading on his toes three times and not apologising – which even when I said sorry, he didn’t seem to accept that I meant it. So I got very cross and told him that I sat where I did because he was the only one in the seats and that he shouldn’t have his feet under the other seat with his shoes off because people have to sit down. My Danish was awful because I was mad and people were looking. Of course no-one wanted to help resolve the situation. I’m not too sure how it ended, although I did try to apologise again. I think he backed down a bit but maybe only because I got annoyed.

    GRRR!!!

    Or tell me to shoe

Do you get this on your train Alex?

Nobody would take their shoes off I don't think. I used to get more stuff like this when I was on a long service. In the old days I would be traveling two stops on a train that went from London to the coast. Not only would they not take their shoes off but they also probably wouldn't lean their legs out etc. It's far more cramped and functional than that on these local trains.

  • Amy13/11/2009 at 07:33

How are we all this morning?

Personally I hate the idea of the four seats facing each other as this always causes problems. This country does not like sharing or invading personal space in any way either.

The other end of the train has rubbish seats but they are in the standard 2x2 format.

And people wonder why so many of us drive to work (although I might add that I need to drive there because that's part of my job) my office is a 20 minute walk down a greenway, so i'd walk if i didn't drive. anything but public transport.

I prefer public transport. It's so much harder to type when you're driving ;)

Personally I hate the idea of the four seats facing each other as this always causes problems. This country does not like sharing or invading personal space in any way either.

Someone needs to visit the train seating designer, knock on their door, walk in, slap him/her across the face lightly, say "thats for the four facing seats you idiot" and walk out. No rants, no nothing, just slap, reason, & leave.

Unfortunately the trip is quickest on the train. But yes, I agree, public transport brings out the worst in all of us. Especially Danes, who are just plain rude anyway.

Actually I blogged about this a few months ago - sorry for the blug but it's entirely relevant!

Ironically there's a big campaign centred around being nice to people on the trains at the moment!

Yes, it's in the SPC dictionary. Lukeh invented the word!

    blug: verb

Definition: To plug one's or another's blog post

Usage: That's why I rarely blug my own posts

As typoed by Lukeh, defined by Gavi

    ah, so it is

I can't stand people who deliberately sit on the aisle because they don't want to sit next to someone. I make a big effort of climbing over them and sitting in the window seat because it's just not fair to make other people stand up unnecessarily.

    Stupid isn't it.

I put my bag in the aisle seat so people take other free seats first - but as soon as someone asks, they get the seat. People get in such a huff when you ask them to move their stuff even though there's a parcel shelf and space under and behind the seats!

I have absolutely no idea what you mean ;)

I'm being tracked now though, so if I was to do that, I would be correctly be punished for typing/driving.

I don't even answer the phone unless I'm parked up, which makes for frustrating motorway journeys when it rings (which it always does when I can't stop quickly).

I have one of those FM Transmitter thingies that plays my ipod through the radio, and when the phone rings, the interference is so bad i have to switch off the radio until the ringing stops, adding to the frustration/desire to hurl phone through window.

so Webber and Horner are one of hte new teams too? And a GP3 team?

Webber will also be out testing a GP3 car on Nov 17 to help bring some publicity to the series.

    Oh I mean morning :)

I have been listening to The Grell Mystery by Frank Froest (read by a certain Christine Blachford) http://librivox.org/the-grell-mystery-by-frank-froest/

Anyway I am going to make all of my salient remarks to some deviled Kidneys from now on :)

Today I have remembered to open Google wave. Go me!

  • Alex Andronov13/11/2009 at 09:05

    Uh oh :)

It's really good and I recommend it to anyone. I was a bit weirded out near the beginning because I expected you to start talking about Good Week Bad Week. But soon enough I got swept along by the story.

I was going to mention that I had a problem with the podcast subscription that I made to it in that it put all of the tracks backwards somehow on my iPhone which would have been really annoying for playback. But I fixed it by making a playlist of the tracks. Weird though.

  • Alex Andronov13/11/2009 at 09:05

Ah yes. It really bugs me with regular podcast subscriptions too. I am always so far behind and I want to listen in order, but I have to manually select each one, or else let it play through them backwards.

  • Journeyer13/11/2009 at 09:13

Ummm... It doesn't for me on the iPhone since 3.0 that was fixed I think. But because all of yours have the same release date I think it's sorted by title.

    There's an SPC Wave?

  • Alex Andronov13/11/2009 at 09:43

    There's an SPC Wave?

It is a public wave... Which I'm not sure about as it has resulted in me getting at least one spam wave... But if you are added people can find them and therefore you...

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/11/2009 at 09:43

Well... I didn't know I was being invited to a public wave by you guys. But I guess I'm there now. I was slightly annoyed actually as there is a high and obvious correlation between wave user names and g-mail accounts. And the related gmail account is my private e-mail that I don't put out anywhere.

You can... I'm not sure I mind that much... It was just that I kind of thought about it and thought... Oooh in the future that's going to be annoying... Just like I use [email protected] or a gamboling one on all my public places. I would, if I had any wave invites have set up one like that for this.

But I'm not sure it matters that much.

It's a new way of communicating with people from Google. Kind of like a cross between email and chat and IM and collaborative documents.

  • Alex Andronov13/11/2009 at 09:55

I like it when you do my thinking for me! :)

Well I hadn't known who had added me before I had guessed it was Mr C. And I had thought that's why he hadn't added you.

But as I say I wasn't so excited to have mentioned it even. But thought I would before you were added.

you didn't use the audiobooks iphone app?

No? Should I? I use the built in ipod app. My guess is that at least half the time I want to be using my iPhone for something else at the same time... Unless it has background audio still plays then I guess not.

  • Christine13/11/2009 at 11:11

FIA to haul Mr C over the coals for releasing you with the car in a dangerous condition?

I like to think it wasn't flat when I was driving it.

  • Nick13/11/2009 at 11:12

My car has a flat tyre. Boo.

This reminds me of a story i heard in Dubai.

Apparently in Dheli the tyre garages spread nails and other sharp bits of petal all over the road about 500 meters away after they finish work.

...when they get in in the morning they have a line of customers already waiting...

  • Christine13/11/2009 at 11:12

    Will he fix it?

Sadly, Mr C is not in the vicinity. I will have to get some real men in.

  • Maverick13/11/2009 at 11:13

Sharp bits of petal? The local flora sounds pretty dangerous!

    Zing!

  • me13/11/2009 at 11:14

Well... I didn't know I was being invited to a public wave by you guys. But I guess I'm there now. I was slightly annoyed actually as there is a high and obvious correlation between wave user names and g-mail accounts. And the related gmail account is my private e-mail that I don't put out anywhere.

i was using it to point out some flaws in google wave. and it has many.

you can easily be in the middle of a private conversation and accidentally make it public without even knowing it.

i can see a lot of wave pain coming. you've highlighted but one additional issue i hadn't thought of.

  • Lukeh13/11/2009 at 11:14

    Awwwwwww

Might be metal, but then again palm petals might do it!

  • Christine13/11/2009 at 11:14

It's weird that you can just add people and suddenly they are in it whether they want to be or not.

  • Alex Andronov13/11/2009 at 11:15

It's weird that you can just add people and suddenly they are in it whether they want to be or not.

I thought about that... But there is similarly nothing to stop me from doing a mass e-mail to all my contacts and leaving you all in the to rather than bcc box. Which happens I guess.

  • me13/11/2009 at 11:16

    MR C!!!!!

    hi. wassup?

yup. if alex removes himself, i can just add him again.

i don't think he can stop me, even if he wanted to?

    hi. wassup?

I was hoping for a miraculous occurance of Headping, but it didn't quite work. As I had just seen you tweet so I figured you were about to appear in the doohicky.

sadly there is no distinction. you can't have one without the other.

  • Lukeh13/11/2009 at 11:30

oooh. not quite andrew, but the next best thing.

Joe's also replied to that comment a bit further on. Makes a good argument to stand up for his point.

I'm sure Benson's reply would be pretty rubbish. His reply to people questioning the decisions made about some choices for the Classic F1 I remember a few weeks ago was almost really self absorbed despite the complaints people were making. I'd love to see what he makes of the GMM-related complaints though

  • Alex Andronov13/11/2009 at 11:34

sadly there is no distinction. you can't have one without the other.

Yes there is. I don't have to tell you my wave address and I can only share it with who I like and would keep it private. Just like I wouldn't expect you to post my personal e-mail address on the doohicky I wouldn't expect you to add Public to a private wave

  • Journeyer13/11/2009 at 11:35

not quite andrew, but the next best thing.

Just like its previous SPC equivalent, this thread has attracted a LOT of attention. Not quite a firestorm in the comments yet, but it's a fine balance.

Yeah I've seen the responses and people seem to continue questioning his logic when he seems to have a 'luxury life'. It's odd!

  • Journeyer13/11/2009 at 11:45

Nowadays, so do most other people. Even Brawn and Red Bull have been doing it this season.

Like Joe I am shocked at how many people think the F1 circus is a life of luxury!

Well, quite. I think he's been a model of restraint. If you're paying your own way in F1 then you have to be very inventive to keep the costs down. To have someone who hasn't even bothered to try and do it carp on about "not having the luxury" to go to grand prix is a bit rich if you ask me...

  • Journeyer13/11/2009 at 11:50

i just don't like what i see at the moment.

Awww. Well, there is a reason why they call it a preview. This is a long way yet from the finished product.

  • Nick13/11/2009 at 11:50

Like Joe I am shocked at how many people think the F1 circus is a life of luxury!

In fairness if you saw the side of F1 i did, it isnt too hard to imagine... :P

But i guess they dont see where the journos (normally) stay, and the fees they have to pay, and the genuine work they do. It is a dream job, but that doesnt mean it is easy

  • Nick13/11/2009 at 11:53

I guess the costs of going to F1 have increaced so much in F1, that the press pass with paddock access is seen as a luxuary item. Paddock club tickets to AD were on sale for $5000 that doesnt even get you in the paddock. I guess people would pay double that to get in the paddock propper

So i guess some people see the privlages and equate luxuary. Its too easy to ignore the fact a journo is working...

My trip to the Italian GP this year cost me hundreds of quid, even though I flew Ryanair and took the cheapest hotel possible. It was about £100 for the car, £400-odd for the hotel, over £200 for the flight (yes, even Ryanair!) and £35 to park my car at Stansted. And that's before getting into any misc exes.

  • Scott Woodwiss13/11/2009 at 12:00

    What's a space saver tyre?

  • Maverick13/11/2009 at 12:13

    What's a space saver tyre?

A small spare tyre that takes up less room in the boot but is only really to get you to the nearest tyre place

  • me13/11/2009 at 12:13

    What's a space saver tyre?

tis thinner and lighter. but you can't go far, or fast on it.

    why?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/11/2009 at 12:13

    What's a space saver tyre?

it's a spare tyre that is not the full size to get you home if you get a flat.

BE WARNED: These tyres offer little grip and are very dangerous!

  • Amy13/11/2009 at 12:14

    What's a space saver tyre?

    they're small and evil

  • Christine13/11/2009 at 12:15

    What a ridiculous idea.

  • Maverick13/11/2009 at 12:15

It's that extra roll of fat that some men have to reserve space for extra beer and pasties

  • Maverick13/11/2009 at 12:17

    What a ridiculous idea.

It would be nice if it was optional actually

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/11/2009 at 12:18

They are very dangerous and get people killed. I think they got banned in NZ because people were driving around on them thinking they were normal tyres!

Well, for most people, if it's black and it's round, it's a tyre. No matter how wide or narrow it is...

  • Maverick13/11/2009 at 12:20

They are very dangerous and get people killed. I think they got banned in NZ because people were driving around on them thinking they were normal tyres!

They're normally painted a ridiculous colour in an attempt to embarrass you into getting it changed as quickly as possible.

They are very dangerous and get people killed. I think they got banned in NZ because people were driving around on them thinking they were normal tyres!

It doesn't look that much smaller than a normal tyre. I don't get what the point is.

  • Nick13/11/2009 at 12:20

    What a ridiculous idea.

Its an absoloute saviour if you get a flat in a remote mountain pass in the rockies in a small car...

still, a regular spare would be better....

  • Christine13/11/2009 at 12:20

They're normally painted a ridiculous colour in an attempt to embarrass you into getting it changed as quickly as possible.

Phew, my everyday commute to work should be OK then

  • Maverick13/11/2009 at 12:21

Why not just have a normal spare tyre?

It's a trade off between being able to get you to a garage and maximising boot space.

  • me13/11/2009 at 12:22

Why not just have a normal spare tyre?

you have a small car. also, they're lighter. they offer a small amount of fuel saving.

that's less v-power per mile to you.

  • me13/11/2009 at 12:22

that's less v-power per mile to you.

    no wait.

    more v-power per mile.

  • Christine13/11/2009 at 12:22

It's a trade off between being able to get you to a garage and maximising boot space.

They trade off giving you a safe car to drive so you can fit more golf clubs in the back? Ridiculous.

    I must blog this later.

  • me13/11/2009 at 12:22

    more v-power per mile.

    i'm confused.

  • Nick13/11/2009 at 12:22

Why not just have a normal spare tyre?

I guess its the size... also the cost of fuel for carrying the weight...

Some cars only offer foam now, so i guess it is better than that

  • Christine13/11/2009 at 12:23

you have a small car. also, they're lighter. they offer a small amount of fuel saving.

Only because I can't drive as fast as I'd like.

  • Christine13/11/2009 at 12:23

you have a small car. also, they're lighter. they offer a small amount of fuel saving.

Oh you mean carrying it around.

I still stick by it not looking any different to a regular tyre.

  • me13/11/2009 at 12:23

Only because I can't drive as fast as I'd like.

    hehe.

  • Nick13/11/2009 at 12:24

There is also the fact that if people use there spare they rarely replace it, so i guess you are more likely to have a working tyre ready to go in an older car.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/11/2009 at 12:24

My brother in law drives a Skoda Fabia Greenline. They remove the spare tyre for you and put something called 'run flat gel' in the tyres so that you can make it to the garage if you get a puncture.

Did you beat whoever gave that to you?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/11/2009 at 12:32

Cold bath to cool you off?

its tempting, but apart from my face I'm rather cold, and my muscles hurt so a warm one would be nice. Stupid flu-like symptoms.

Just put some ice or frozen peas in a teatowel and put it on your forehead...

They even wrapped it! Like you couldn't tell what it was!

I have a bad habit of spinning my earrings around when I'm bored :D

The best part is because it hurts when I swallow I've been spending a lot of time drooling on my pillow. So hot right now.

but then what would I do when bored?

  • Amy13/11/2009 at 12:39

Have you considered that spinning the earrings might have caused the swelling?

I've done it for about 10 years and the swelling has occured today at the same time as all my other symptoms so I think its the cold/flu virus playing tricks on me :(

  • Nick13/11/2009 at 12:40

Bwin and Becks Beer to appear on the BGP002 for 25 million euros next season.

    Source?

I think this is bwin's first foray into team sponsorship, while Becks was previously with Jaguar (on the bargeboard section).

Any word if either of them (bwin in particular) will be a title sponsor?

Hasn't Bwin been mentioned since before the 2009 season even started?

  • Lukeh13/11/2009 at 12:52

    Source?

Just popped up off Twitter from someone who used to work at Brawn, also saying Brawn and McLaren are to share a Mobil1 investment...

  • Lukeh13/11/2009 at 12:52

Hasn't Bwin been mentioned since before the 2009 season even started?

Yeah. Also been rumours recently of a beer being involved too with the sponsorship so it'd make sense...

  • Maverick13/11/2009 at 12:53

Just popped up off Twitter from someone who used to work at Brawn, also saying Brawn and McLaren are to share a Mobil1 investment...

It's starting to look like like Brawn-Mercedes-McLaren are going to have a comfortable threesome rather than Merc dropping McLaren.

  • Nick13/11/2009 at 12:54

Just popped up off Twitter from someone who used to work at Brawn, also saying Brawn and McLaren are to share a Mobil1 investment...

Mobil1 will follow Mercedes, it muc more important to them than F1

Just popped up off Twitter from someone who used to work at Brawn, also saying Brawn and McLaren are to share a Mobil1 investment...

Now, taking into context what I thought of yesterday, does this make it more or less likely that McLaren, Mercedes, and Brawn can agree on a deal for the Merc move before the year is out?

  • Maverick13/11/2009 at 12:55

Amy, are we the #sameperson? My ears are swollen and burning!

I think somebody is just talking about you

  • Maverick13/11/2009 at 12:59

    Ah... so its Karma :P

It's psychosomatic - Gavin has been so busy feeling his ear lobes to see if they are hot and swollen that they're now hot and swollen from rubbing them.

  • Scott Woodwiss13/11/2009 at 12:59

Yeah. Also been rumours recently of a beer being involved too with the sponsorship so it'd make sense...

I'm surprised you're not already working on a PS of what the 2010 car could look like with those sponsors on ;)

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing the Brawn in black and flourescent yellow just like their merchandise. That would look pretty awesome :D

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/11/2009 at 13:00

I'm surprised you're not already working on a PS of what the 2010 car could look like with those sponsors on ;)

I'm awful at photoshopping cars. The end result would look disastrous. Steven said about a month ago how he'd like to see a livery similar to what you said though, it'd look interesting. :)

  • Maverick13/11/2009 at 13:02

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing the Brawn in black and flourescent yellow just like their merchandise. That would look pretty awesome :D

Wasn't that the entire basis of the original Bwin rumour - The black white and yellow livery happened to match Bwin's

  • Journeyer13/11/2009 at 13:02

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing the Brawn in black and flourescent yellow just like their merchandise. That would look pretty awesome :D

That always puzzled me about Brawn. They had a licence to paint whatever they wanted on a blank canvas and they went for something so stark and minimalist. Shame really.

  • Scott Woodwiss13/11/2009 at 13:04

    green and fluro yello?

As much as the green would tie in with Becks, it just wouldn't look right im my opinion.

They did say the blank car was a sign that they were pretty much using it as advertising space for potential sponsors. After their success I'm not expecting it to be so blank in 2010. :P

Sadly the case with a load of games these days. This is why I refuse to rush through campaigns/story modes/etc, paying that much for such little value at times. I have games I've owned for over a year and still not completed!!

A lot of my more 'gamer orientated' friends find it stupid I have games for such a long time without completing them but I enjoy it much more...

I am sorry but even with a large multiplayer component that is poor - You can make a great online-based game for next to nothing these days!

But the Multiplayer more than makes up for it as does the Spec Ops mode, which is kinda like a Scenario mode or something. I agree, the campaign could have been longer but it does leave you wanting more and I think that Modern Warfare 3 has the potential to be bigger than MW2.

Activision are RRP'ing MW2 at £55 by the way.

  • Scott Woodwiss13/11/2009 at 13:45

I know it's a different genre, but I haven't finished GRID yet (the final $10M challenge on Le Mans)

I always lose speed in the final twisty sector.

Speaking of Le Mans there's an event over at the Race Shop World Series forums taking place in December - the Speed Chills Le Mans 2.4. Basically - 2h 24mins race at Le Mans on Forza 3, winners of LMP and GT classes each get 2 tickets to Le Mans 2010. :P

    For £45? RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRubbish!

But the Multiplayer more than makes up for it as does the Spec Ops mode, which is kinda like a Scenario mode or something. I agree, the campaign could have been longer but it does leave you wanting more and I think that Modern Warfare 3 has the potential to be bigger than MW2.

Sorry I disagree. Even if you play that for a year you're paying £4.50. That's more than the monthly cost of iRacing and that's a high tech simulation!

It amuses me how Twitter are struggling to do Retweeting on their website. Surely is basically every twitter app and program has retweeting in it it can't be that hard for Twitter themselves to implement!

  • Christine13/11/2009 at 14:14

Unless suddenly everyone has decided to give up replying and start fresh tweets. Which seems unlikely.

hehe, i do feel slightly hypocritical, but the guy was a fool.

He wont ditch Gmm now he has been pinned though, so i guess the best that can be helped is that other sites get embarresed and ditch it too.

Im sure a lot of people with such sites read joes blog.

All the naming and shaming of sites that use GMM content. It only ends in tears and every time it seems like no ground is won or lost on that front. In fact the usage of that aggregator seems to be increasing.

doesn't surprise me in the slightest. it's cheap tat. most people don't know any difference.

    why not?

To embarresed, if i was him it would make me more determined to persevere with it.

They're naming and shaming the wrong ones. It's one thing when it is some small operation that wants a low-cost news feed to fill the void, it's a whole different ball game when the BBC are legitimising it.

    in terms of what exactly?!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/11/2009 at 14:51

OK, fair enough. There's nothing wrong with a bit of Fighting Talk now and again, so long as you know the other side plays fair too.

i also quite like discussing the subject, weirdly.

I agree, it's important to the future of journalism on the internet, and needs a sensible and constructive forum.

The irony in all this is that if the real journos like Joe stop, there will be nothing for the bottom-feeders to use!

  • Nick13/11/2009 at 14:53

    in terms of what exactly?!

    Workload!

Here ya go... instead of a chapeter, read this book.

Oh and you will need to read 6 of these articles to understand what you have read too...

That's because GMM played nasty and Ray from Freecast didn't. I saw that there was ample room for a constructive discussion which doesn't happen with GMM...

The irony in all this is that if the real journos like Joe stop, there will be nothing for the bottom-feeders to use!

Sort of true. After all, when most of the F1 press closed up shop for a breather a month or two back, even GMM's feed went quiet because there were no quotes to cherry-pick.

If I were Bernie I would have my own official press agency. Most of the mainstream media are teetering on the brink of not sending full-time F1 correspondents any more. As soon as Button and Hamilton go – or if they start tugging – that will be that.

Every time we have criticised stuff like GMM here, things have got nasty. Now that will spread to Joe's blog because he had a dig too. I just don't think it's wise because all the sniping makes people tired of it and might put the wrong people off...

All the naming and shaming of sites that use GMM content. It only ends in tears and every time it seems like no ground is won or lost on that front. In fact the usage of that aggregator seems to be increasing.

One infamous site that used GMM stopped using GMM because of the last backlash. And I think it's worthwhile to say the truth.

When one uses the word 'campaign', is it not the same as 'battle'.

It's similar. But of course depends on context.

Campaign can be used in a purely positive sense light an advertising campaign.

Battles usually refer to a single incident.

    i read that: asgoodareasonasamy

    either works.

  • Nick13/11/2009 at 16:29

Would love to stay and chat, but i have to be off...

    Have fun guys! :D

  • RG13/11/2009 at 16:30

I vote for Adam Carroll. He is cute. #asgoodareasonasany

But Timo Glock is also cu....racking of a driver.

  • Nick13/11/2009 at 16:30

I'm not a violent person! I'm not sure where this came from. Nick nearly fell off is own chair. That wasn't my fault.

    *cough* *cough* *cough*

  • Stuart C13/11/2009 at 16:31

But Timo Glock is also cu....racking of a driver.

Hasn't F1 got enough boring Germans as is?

    *runs and hides*

    You were off...?

  • Kathi13/11/2009 at 16:32

hehe. He's German. I don't like Germans. But he can have the second seat.

  • RG13/11/2009 at 16:33

    .... Oh big mistake.

    RUN! RUN! RUN!

  • Alison13/11/2009 at 16:34

I know! It's outrageous Alison only threatened to throw Nick off the balcony to his death. She never actually did, and anyone who says she did is a liar ;)

    True story.

  • Lukeh13/11/2009 at 16:35

Hasn't F1 got enough boring Germans as is?

Well Nick Heidfeld himself did say there is no fun in Germany... :P

I know. And they are everywhere! :)

I blame the TV coverage I was subjected to as an impressable little girl. RTL is baaaaaaaaaaaaad.

He also gave me a discount on my repair for no apparent reason whatsoever.

    Was she being ripped off?

There you go. You did not have a flat tyre at all and you got charge at the full (minutley) rate of them looking at your tyre to tell you that...

  • Dank13/11/2009 at 18:22

Now I'll be honest, I was asked to promote this as much as possible, but it's good spam! Honest!

Red Bull Racing are doing a 'Fan Awards' feature on their website. It's one of those survey things that takes a couple of minutes and for your troubles you get the chance of winning some F1-related prizes.

    More details here: http://www.redbullracing.com/Team/Team-Profile/News/Vote-in-Our-First-Fan-Awards--And-Win-Yourself-Prizes/

The chances of anyone winning anything are probably quite high, but you didn't hear that from me... :-)

    Pizza wrapped in Plastic!

  • Alex Andronov13/11/2009 at 18:32

    what is it?

I'm not totally sure. It's just casually mentioned as though almost anyone would know what it is. I guess it is a pipe that leads between rooms and you speak into and if somebody puts their ear to the other end they can hear!

  • Steven Roy13/11/2009 at 18:32

the 500,000 commentor should get a reward of some description...

I don't like that idea. People should not get a reward for posting a random comment. You would end up with someone getting a reward for saying something totally inane.

  • Alex Andronov13/11/2009 at 18:32

I did the link earlier but am on the train now and it's hard. It is higher up in this thread though.

  • Alex Andronov13/11/2009 at 18:42

Timo to Manor? From what I have heard the other driver will be Di Grassi.

  • Kimster/Samy13/11/2009 at 19:36

haha what a name Di Grassi! How can they expect him to stay off the grass!!

  • Lukeh13/11/2009 at 19:36

haha what a name Di Grassi! How can they expect him to stay off the grass!!

Let's hope he doesn't like eating Baguettes then...

  • RG13/11/2009 at 19:38

Timo to Manor? From what I have heard the other driver will be Di Grassi.

Possibly. Really no indication to favour any move to Renault or Manor. Just that he's talked to him.

  • Pat W13/11/2009 at 19:39

good for you .. I'm thinking I might go get a takeaway for tea

I've done that the last couple of Fridays and was tempted again but I'd better not..

  • RG13/11/2009 at 19:39

Timo talking to himself?? You do know what the first sign of madness is?

  • Lukeh13/11/2009 at 19:42

Timo talking to himself?? You do know what the first sign of madness is?

Well Timo had his acting debut in Toyota's unveiling this year so maybe this is his followup starring in He, Himself and Timo, the sequel to that Jim Carrey film.

  • Pat W13/11/2009 at 19:43

I've done that the last couple of Fridays and was tempted again but I'd better not..

I settled for toast and cheese :(

not too bad, more of a lunch though..

I have a pizza but was planning to cook it tomorrow... the other options are easy pasta (had yesterday) or do a curry, and I can't be bothered

  • Pat W13/11/2009 at 19:44

Last night when I went to bed I had plans to get more stuff done tonight. I've done absolutely nothing and can't even remember what it was I was going to do.

  • Lady Snowcat13/11/2009 at 19:46

    I don't get it...

If I were a Spanish sponsor would I want to back Pedro....

    Errr....

I think even I would choose Teflonso or actually the next big thing Andy Soucek .....

    But never Pedro....

  • me13/11/2009 at 20:03

Formula one car on track today shock horror.

is that under the 'young drivers days' regulations or the 'older than two seasons car' ?

  • Steven Roy13/11/2009 at 20:20

    On RG's sudden discovery...

How do you do that so quickly?

  • Steven Roy13/11/2009 at 20:20

is that under the 'young drivers days' regulations or the 'older than two seasons car' ?

I assume it is the old car rule

  • guille230613/11/2009 at 20:36

I assume it is the old car rule

    Ferrari leading the way :P

I thought the same, but it's the 2008 car so it would be a little bit on the edge... On the other hand, wasting one of the few precious 'young drivers' tests on an old car in the wet makes no sense; it has to be that.

That says he was at McLaren today. You read it correctly Kathi

you're not helping. You're supposed to say. No Kathi, this is a peculiar quirk in the English grammar that foreigners might have problems to understand. It actually says McLaren love Kimi and will give him the car he's going to win his second championship with next season.

  • Steven Roy13/11/2009 at 20:51

I wonder if it is co-incidence that the day Button visits Woking McLaren have a car running at Silverstone.

  • Steven Roy13/11/2009 at 20:52

you're not helping. You're supposed to say. No Kathi, this is a peculiar quirk in the English grammar that foreigners might have problems to understand. It actually says McLaren love Kimi and will give him the car he's going to win his second championship with next season.

This is all negotiation. Jenson will stay at brawn and Kimi will go to McLaren

  • me13/11/2009 at 20:54

    maybe.

i mean, showing a potential around your factory?

    *potential rival.

  • Kathi13/11/2009 at 20:55

This is all negotiation. Jenson will stay at brawn and Kimi will go to McLaren

On the other hand rallys are much easier to attend than F1 races...Hmm.

  • Kathi13/11/2009 at 20:57

I wonder why I have not seen news of Jenson's visit to McLaren anywhere else.

Maurice doesn't use his twitter correctly :)

  • Steven Roy13/11/2009 at 20:58

i mean, showing a potential around your factory?

Why not. McLaren have the most impressive set up in the sport. He is not going to learn anything he can use but if he is a few points behind Lewis in the championship he is going to think that McLaren have that inccredible set up working against him.

Besides Mercedes have been in the inside for more than a decade and they ar going to Brawn. So Button is not going to learn anything on a quick visit that Mercedes don't already know.

I wonder if Kimi will be visiting Brackley any time soon.

  • Steven Roy13/11/2009 at 20:59

On the other hand rallys are much easier to attend than F1 races...Hmm.

I am sure he will fo some of those as well.

  • Steven Roy13/11/2009 at 20:59

I am sure he will fo some of those as well.

Using fo instead of of is an unusual grammar thing that foreigners may not understand

    :D

I got me an idea for a video to make using Forza 3. I've got the music track already and I've just started saving replays to my storefront. What I've got in mind is something that captures the spirit of the old Nurburging. If this comes off how I want it to, I think it'll be great :P

oh why can't they just announce where he is going. Off season SUCKS!

No it doesn't. It wouldn't matter if it was in the middle of the season now either. They only announce things when they're ready.

  • Scott Woodwiss13/11/2009 at 21:09

    i suddenly feel rather ill...

Jenson wants to stay, Brawn want him to stay, there's no reason why he would say he's devoted to the team and then run off to McLaren. Don't worry, I'm sure everything will be as it should be :)

  • lou13/11/2009 at 21:10

No it doesn't. It wouldn't matter if it was in the middle of the season now either. They only announce things when they're ready.

  • Lukeh13/11/2009 at 21:11

It's odd that in a world championship team this year, the world champion seems to have a future that causes all sorts of stress, and yet his teammate who didn't have much of a future in f1 has his season sorted...

Just find it odd. You'd imagine it'd be the other way around.

  • Steven Roy13/11/2009 at 21:12

You just have to take the view that nothing has happened. He has visited McLaren but nothing has changed

Maurice Hamilton's point about Hamilton is short-sighted - it would be far less painful to be beaten by Hamilton (an ex-WDC) than, say, Rosberg.

But visiting McLaren doesn't mean it's a job interview.

Just find it odd. You'd imagine it'd be the other way around.

That happened all the time back in Williams days. Frank thought you should make less money as an Champion at Williams than as a driver at Williams. After all, it was the Williams that the Champion drove that made him a driver in the first place. You did not like that idea, you where gone, simple as that. Frank had a point, too. Senna drove that Williams like a piece of crap in the two races before Imola. He even made Damon look good in the process.

No but as Champion I think it right that you should expect the team to win around you, now if McLaren are going to revlove around a rookie instead of a double WDC's then I am not going to be surpirzed if McLaren revolves around the same rookie who is now the ex-WDC's and frankly tell Button to stuff it and say we do things around Hamilton's way and you are just here so that we can collect all the data we need to without our driver wearing out the tyres...

Then again, I do think that Button's interested in making is wallet fatter again.(Williams/BMW contract dispute issue again)

even though you know how it ends?

In a Great War movie like Tora!, Tora!, Tora! you know the Japanese are going to sneak attack Pearl Habour, yet there is the suspense of these movie actors trying to stop pre-destined results. In Titanic, however, you just want the Captain to put the ship at full speed ahead so that so that it will end that lame-brain love story sooner. If you hit an iceberg in the journey somewhere that helps as it ends the love story sooner than expected.

Funny how "A Night To Remember" is the better of the Titanic movies and has suspense as well.

Well, a minute by minute account of an race would be cool, but within the time of a movie, there's not really that many world famous races that can fit into a movie like that, and have enough of a back story for the average movie fan to be instead in it. The Indy 500 is way too long. Le Mans is out of the question. With the back storu of a typical F1 race you are pushing 2 hours or 2 30 minutes when I am shocked to see a movie last more than 90 minutes.

    Thursday is looking more likely

  • startledbunny13/11/2009 at 23:00

    i should be.

got in free this year, i want to go again. the live show was enjoyable.

  • Jon Waldock13/11/2009 at 23:00

    That is never good

It's the friday before reading week, so im not 100% surprised

  • Jon Waldock13/11/2009 at 23:00

    how?!

  • Alex Andronov13/11/2009 at 23:00

So I'm just back from doing the Jonathon Ross show ;)

  • Maverick13/11/2009 at 23:01

So apart from who's listed on the wiki, is anyone else thinking of going to Autosport next year?

I am. Didn't know there was a wiki.

  • startledbunny13/11/2009 at 23:02

So I'm just back from doing the Jonathon Ross show ;)

They threw you out after your interview?

  • Maverick13/11/2009 at 23:03

You're really World Heavyweight Champion David Haye?

  • Jon Waldock13/11/2009 at 23:03

So I'm just back from doing the Jonathon Ross show ;)

oh wow *cough* recorded on a thursday *cough*

    how was it?

  • Alex Andronov13/11/2009 at 23:03

Why does he remind me of Alex? Am I crazy?

Funnily enough I have been dogged by it. I used to get a lot of David Mitchell comparisons but now it's all Michael McIntyre. We do have quite similar senses of humour. In fact I just got a text from my brother's fiancée which reads:

You didn't tell us you were on Jonathon Ross tonight!!!

    So it's not just you!

  • RG13/11/2009 at 23:04

I am. Didn't know there was a wiki.

    what?

  • Alex Andronov13/11/2009 at 23:04

  • Lukeh13/11/2009 at 23:16

Is it though? They could have done the friend code thing like Mario Kart, that works

In comparison to it's rivals, the Wii online infrastructure is absurd. It works for Mario Kart but to be honest I'm not surprised F1 2009 doesn't have it :(

    Still sucks though...

  • Jon Waldock13/11/2009 at 23:17

So, if Christine and Mr C aren't going to Autosport or the karting this year, how are they going to cover it?

I'm not familiar with its rivals but if there is a system to be used, even a flawed one, it should use it.

  • Scott Woodwiss13/11/2009 at 23:18

  • lou13/11/2009 at 23:18

So, if Christine and Mr C aren't going to Autosport or the karting this year, how are they going to cover it?

from what Mr and Mrs C said on Sunday, they haven't really thought about it... they don't plan things this far in advance.. and i can understand why :)

  • Steven Roy13/11/2009 at 23:18

So, if Christine and Mr C aren't going to Autosport or the karting this year, how are they going to cover it?

    They haven't decided yet

  • RG13/11/2009 at 23:18

    who says they are?

I believe they have secretly hired 'the dream team' up to do it for them.

  • Lukeh13/11/2009 at 23:19

the f1 section was just the cars in a roped off area.

DC's car collection was more interesting.

I didn't sit to listen to any of the talks. I think I would be more inclined to now though.

  • Jon Waldock13/11/2009 at 23:24

The F1 display was cool the first year I went because that was the first time I'd ever seen F1 cars. I went back after and it was really underwhelming. I like wandering around the whole hall and finding completely random things in unexpected places, like a line of not-so-interesting displays and suddenly there's an F1 car in the middle of it all.

  • Pat W13/11/2009 at 23:27

  • Pat W13/11/2009 at 23:31

DVDs and t-shirts and hats are another matter

  • Scott Woodwiss13/11/2009 at 23:34

Free stuff is always welcome at the Autosport show too. Pens, keyrings, posters, stickers, anything!

  • Pat W13/11/2009 at 23:35

This year is about building relationships and letting people know who i am

The official countdown for Monday's shuttle launch started today. Everything looks good for Monday with NASA weather predicting only a 10% chance of weather affecting the launch. I have never seen such a good weather forecast. Normally 60% good is as high as they get.

you dont have to be confident. just blag it. the only time its shown not to be is when you get asked "are you ok?" and you go "yes" *runs*

    hehe

  • Scott Woodwiss13/11/2009 at 23:39

it is their career choice as there is a career in it. if it didnt make a difference from a pr-pov then they wouldnt be hired and would be out of a job. i know some will have chosen it because they genuinely want to, but some will do because they need a job. it depends what makes you tic i guess

No of course, I agree with you on that. I wasn't being derogative of women at all when I said that, all I meant was if those women choose to be a promo girl and have pictures taken with cars and stuff like that while scantily dressed, then that's up to them, career choice or not. :P

i went to see the cars. that sort of thing does nothing for me

In previous times I went to see the cars and hope to spot famous people, and looking at girls was a nice bonus. I've sort of grown out of the latter (it helps that they hire jail bait, I'm no longer interested in them).

This year I'm going partly to see cars and famous people, but also for the social aspect of commenters and bloggers.

  • Jon Waldock13/11/2009 at 23:58

Hence the trade day.. Really good plan 'cos it is a big event in the junior category calendar, particularly for UK series.

ya. i just want to talk to as many people as possible, whether its in my/their interest or not. it will sound big headed, but i dont really have anyone around me (in a "actual tangible person", non-spc-er) who has a knowledge of all circuit racing, and sure my knowledge is by no means complete, but i like to be able to say "Formula Renault" or "SaxMax" and the person im talking too have an idea of what im going on about. Autosport does that, its just a massive collection of motorsport people. tis my idea of heaven. and trade day will be even better, almost no public! woop

I shall be using this years show to promote me and build relationships and contacts. S'just how im wired, however odd it may be, ^^ does nothing for me.

You are moving into that industry and someone puts on a show that you can use. You would be crazy not to take advantage of it. Get some business cards printed.

I went on the trade day 2 or 3 years ago and it is a totally different event.

I'll stop asking questions and let you get sleep.

i bet. am so excited its unreal!

I'm going to try and not do anything embarrassing, like wave goodbye to DC in the live arena (why, i have no idea) *facepalm*

Even as a humble blogger, if I took blogging seriously I'd be tempted to use the trade day. Depends who's there and available I suppose. I think they'd be really interested in meeting a podcaster about feeder series.

I went in one year or another. 2004 or 2005. Can't remember. It was a lot quieter.

Photography fans my enjoy these taken by @Fieldof33 earlier in the year. Bear in mind the cars are doing anything between 160 and 210 mph.

Steven find some shotguns and fill the slugs with fine salt between the shot pellets, Startlebunny, see if you can find some member of the church to bless the hot water heater and more specially, the water inside it. I will see if I can find some buckets....

One of these tricks has to keep Jon out....
