I was browsing the Wikipedia entry for May 14th for some kind of interesting fact, and found that Stirling Moss won the Monaco GP on this day in 1961. The people's encyclopedia also says that Moss removed the side panels of his Lotus to help keep him cool. Crikey! Anyway, on to more modern subjects:
- BMW have said that whilst their KERS device is skipping a race at Monaco, they'll be bringing it back bigger and better for Turkey. The team really need something to work in their favour as the results haven't been coming in as they would have hoped yet.
- Ferrari have said they could take their passion for Formula 1 and integrate it into a new motorsports category. What would that be, I wonder? Rallying? Touring Cars? NASCAR??
- Lots of people have been having fun over on the Wiki recently. I recommend going over to check it out. We've got updated stats for the completed second series of Sidepodpanel. RG has created a list of the Sidepodcommunity Twitter accounts, and there's info about who is turning up to what motorsport events this year.
That'll do it for now. We're also keeping a close eye on the goings up in space, in our ongoing Sidepodspace feature. If you spot anything, let us know, and I'll see you in the comments.
Come on Twitter :)
midnight again? aww, man.
The website is notoriously slow. This is one reason people use clients..
Tell me about it.
it goes so quickly :( boooo @ time!!!
awww :( time for me to sleep then... night all x
night lou.
night!!
goodnight :) xx

Photo 6 shows Moss at Monaco with bits removed from the car
Night Lou
good lord.
Those guys had big cajones
The website is notoriously slow. This is one reason people use clients.. {Comment #3}
That would make sense.
Time to go sleepies me thinks and jump on the first class train to dreamsville.
Night all
There's also a pic of AVUS in 1959 and it looks very old even then.
see ya lukeh.
It is only fibreglass that is missing. It did nothing but stop the occasional stone hitting the driver's leg
That was one of Hitler's little project. I don't imagine a penny was spent on the banking much after he was removed.
day 3 withdrawal update: fell asleep WHILE commenting and woke up to find my laptop on the floor. Probably not good for it. Just realised i cant get an early night this weekend though as the madrid masters finals are on and i have been good and not watched tennis all week.
Looks like it is tea break and no-onetold me
woah!
am still here, probs til 5ish.
Figures break is right when I decide to show up.
Your withdrawal plan may not be working but others are worse. Journeyer set his alarm for 3 am to take part in the Pitlane Fanatic quiz. What's worse is that he won it.
howdy vinnie, what's news?
I'm sure I saw you say you had a job as well...
Seems there are always people around ready to be sparked into action. I don't think Amy is real though. She is a bot
Could use a cuppa and a KitKat.
i'm working right now, not on spc stuff or nothing.
I've spent most of today reading all the comments trying to catch up with the SPC stuff I've missed. I would feel terrible if somehow John managed to pass me on the stages of addiction.
You need to sign up to be on a show to stay ahead. There are options for your first sidepodshow during the Monaco weekend
ah-ha. it's catching!
are you any wiser for your troubles though?
An entire day reading comments?
Oh hang on I did that last weekend. or was it the one before.
Well I'm on the list of twittering regulars...
And it's good to see that the space shuttle mission is going well. I actually embarrassed myself by reading the comment that the docking with the hubble was coming up and I got all excited, then I realized the comments were half a day old and I missed it.
I don't like that there isn't enough time for me to work at my own pace.
I had errands and lunch guests, so I basically spent 3 hours reading the comments for yesterday.
Yes I am actually working too. Then I have to write an application for my job.
There's too much distraction here.
We have all done that. We have also all watched recordings of shows we have missed and posted comments as if they were live.
coool. am following.
eh? you're applying for your own job?
Just got it. Following you as well.
Yeah exactly. Been temporary in it for 6 months, and now they have advertised it.
wordcount now in the 4k target ballpark..
holy cow I'm live commenting wordcounts
yell if the paperclip arrives to offer assistance won't ya?
not sure i've jumped through all the hoops they've asked for though. think i'll print this as 1st draft and get some feedback on it. where's my printer cable..
At least you have your priorities straight.
Of course. I was tweeting it earlier.
think i disabled it
;P
i am heikki-bot. Not human at all. Replicant perhaps.
better throw in the summary before i print it. i left a note to myself.
"Overview of the benefits to the company but not a c&p of the recommendations section! Meet the terms of reference and summarise advantages of recommendations."
I think they make a cream for that...
my eyes and head hurt
long day?
yip
printer ink running low :-(
shake it (assuming it's a laser). pray if it's an ink jet.
good plan. serves me right for not using it often enough.
cartridge made in phillipines. think we know who to blame.
Steven Roy?
Was thinking Journeyer but if the cap fits.
oh stupid machine
What happened now?
Shh!! They can hear...
:P
It chewed up the paper. It tries to feed too quickly and harshly.
Either your getting fed up, or hooked :-)
Sounds like my scanner
carry on, i love live commenting stuff.
could do with a drop.io pic from context though...
bit busy to get the camera out!
I have no idea what your talking about. But I'm blaming you when I don't get my laundry done.
18 really crappy faint pages printed without being chewed. something of a result.
heeh!
...not steven?
I'm putting it on to a memory stick in the faint hope i can remember my password at college. given i haven't used the computers there since last june it could be difficult
you know those times when you wish spc wasn't family friendly and you could swear? that would be now.
i was planning to be in bed 2hrs ago
Well... I was being interrogated. I think in this specific instance I will let Steven off the hook. Unless Pat can prove that this project somehow has Steven involved.
consider it character building. what time are you up in the morning?
DONE. I am out of here.
I have a test at 9.30. It is 45 minutes away. I usually cut it as fine as possible and I now have a 1.8 TDI warp drive instead of a little Punto.
night sir, and best of luck.
Thanks. If my lecturer isn't impressed by the project I'll blame Steven Roy.
Morning.
Alright, now that the live commenting is over I'll go take care of my laundry. If I'm not back in 10 minutes, assume the scent of detergent killed me.
shall do. ummm... good luck?
how the heck did the laptop end up on the floor?!
what's so bad about that, eh? :P
:D He's well on his way, isn't he? ;)
Oi! What brand of ink cartridge is that?!
:D You're closer to the truth than you think...
Mr C, still up - again?
morning.
Does anyone here read Racecar Engineering?
you kidding? someone here has been published in racecar engineering.
...
...
ummm, anyways, what of it?
SPC work, or work work?
work, work.
I HAVE the issue you're in...
Anyways... I just got the latest issue, and I swear it feels like its articles are all trying to sell me something. A process or a product or a service, rather than actually tell me something about racing or technology.
As I thought... a nocturnal person when it comes to that kind of work?
laptop ended up on the floor as i am rather a restless sleeper so anything on my bed stands no chance of staying there all night. My laptop is on its last legs anyway which is a shame as i cant afford a replacement with all the other money spending plans i have in the pipeline.
tsk tsk. if it's on its last legs, shouldn't you be taking care of it better? :( we don't wanna lose you along with your laptop...
YAY!
that this months? haven't got it yet, but i will at the weekend.
hope it;s not the case though, it's a good magazine.
i am generally. hence why christine and i run shifts at spc. i had a breakthrough last weekend though, when christine stayed up until 5am with me :)
small steps...
are you dragging her into nocturnal territory? isn't she a morning person? :D
It's the June issue. They have a 15 page section (the NASCAR one) that is fully sponsored by Performance Friction Brakes... and surprise surprise 4 pages of that section is on PFB's products for NASCAR.
yes and yes.
GRRRRRR! I swear. Computers do things just to laugh at our frustrations.
tsk tsk tsk. how do you ever get along? :P
then again, it was you who convinced her to start watching F1, right? so you have a track record when it comes to that kind of thing. :D
ouch. are the declaring that upfront though, or is it all a bit hush-hush?
sam from the mag is a pretty good chap, he's commented here in the past, it might be worth raising concerns with him (there's a contact form on the site). i'll take a look on saturday.
wassup?
hehe. although i didn't convert her, i think she sneakily started watching it whe i wasn't looking.
Well it's obvious that the PFB logo is in the corner of every page of that section and visible on most of the pictures in the brake article. But it's not actually explicitly stated, you have to put the two together.
damnit :(
Oh you're not getting me live commenting.
Trying to set up a hardware VPN. I change one little IP address and bang! everything stops working.
worth a try :)
It's bad enough when I know I do something stupid. Don't want other people finding out ;-)
The whole issue isn't a total waste though. There's some good stuff in there. Dave Williams (suspension expert) actually talks about the inerters that are in use in F1 right now. He talks about testing them for teams and actually says "He also notes that in some ways it is better than active suspension." and claims they are responsible for a number of the bigger accidents.
you wanna try doing a live show.
:-)
that's more like it :)
i quite like the idea of f1 articles funded by nascar money...
that's like stealing from the rich to give to the poor...
oh, wait, f1's richer than nascar. :D
it probably shows that nascar's business model is working and f1's isn't.
Laying 1500 people off doesn't sound like working to me.
that's true, to a certain extent. but they are off their peak from a few years ago now - and they're starting to lose sponsors.
Tell him to Skype me. Kathi can't find me if he can't
I think Amy was trying the Nico Rosberg short nap method. Laptop is probably not the best thing to use
:D
can find me if he can't
andrew benson responded to the mounting discontent that the bbc's "mole" doesn't do a lot of digging.
i have to say he does a terrible job with his defence, but i love this quote:
"The BBC is not trying to compete with the likes of autosport.com. We don't want to, and we're not allowed to..."
"...We are trying to provide something different, something distinctive."
cough, f1 big picture, cough. i'll leave a response shortly, although it'll probably be in moderation until the morning.
I have the inside scoop on why Kimi is slow!
Who wants to hear it?
I do! :D Let 'er rip! :P
Me! ME!
Apparently he has broken down recently mubling in kimi lauguage 'I neeeeeed my Daaaaad'
He is reported to be upset with the amount Fathers attending the GP's
Massa, Hamilton, Button, Webber, PK etc etc.
He has abodonment issues. All a rumor though
hahaha
:D
Didn't his dad go to Brazil when he won it in 07? :P
Would a hug from Schumi every now and then help?
Schumi tried but it didn't work out for them both.
Not the same apparently
Go for it
Scroll up Steven
I would be willing to pay money for a picture of that. Awkward city.

Perfectly summed up.
ta :)
enjoyed reading this post from alan baldwin.
Out of curiosity, why's the post on Reuters India?
it's probably syndicated to all of the world outlets, but reuters india were the first to "ping" their latest f1 stories to twitter, so i've just stuck with following them.
just reading gp+ before i sleep. there's a hell of a line on the final page from david tremayne:
"The real truth of the so-called 'Liegate' scandal is as ugly as betrayal itself and one day it will be possible to write the truth of it without fear of legal recrimination."
it's well worth a read, and while clearly not able to go into any further detail at the moment, it appears exonerate ron from any kind of wrongdoing in the affair.
That's interesting.
But at the same time annoying that we don't know the 'real truth'
I feel like before we know the full truth of lie-gate, maybe we could learn the full truth of spy-gate first?
true enough. it will out eventually though.
that's also a good one.
where's stepney's book?
It's funny how the Brawn boys and RBR seem to not be involved in the BS politics.
They just 'get on with it'
I thought RBR gave a press release saying they won't race next year under the cap?
To be fair, they have only been "in it" this year. Even as Honda, they were so far behind nobody was interested.
Imagine in Australia if McLaren of Ferrari had been found to have flexi-wings instead on Toyota! It's all about how far up the pecking order the team is.
That's fair enough though. I wouldn't race either.
What are the teams that have actually come out in favor of the cap as it stands?
I would say DR is keen on it but he is not a team. He is more a te so far
hehehe... so much for stepney's book. he never published it.
Well then at least he could do the decent thing and "leak" the manuscript.
but he wouldn't make money! that's why he wants to get it published. :P
Maybe Branson could publish it
Maybe Branson could publish the book onto the Brawn car!!!!!
I would argue that some authors have shown that you can release a book for free online and then people who like it will be willing to buy it. Download numbers could even be used to convince a publisher it's worth supporting you.
spot on comment mr c. For once my bbc-only internet was relevant to sidepodcast!
hmmm... very interesting, this... it could go either way, really. it could still be ron or martin's fault...
agreed. tis a bit ironic that andrew benson got to f1 partly because of joe saward, who now has the first F1 mole...
Alright, it's time for me to punch out. See you all tomorrow!
We've more or less assumed this one already, but nonetheless, JA tweets that...
This is the troubling bit, though:
Yikes.
You can just imagine the noise he was making as he typed that...
Sounds about right. Teams are looking to woo their next year's sponsorship roster right about now, with a view to having everything in place by August/September.
Yep, you could only imagine. Self-control, self-control...
This SHOULD be done and dusted by the end of the month (since they'd need to be entered in the 2010 championship by then). If it isn't, it'll be total chaos.
Ultimate Kaos, even?

Suuuure, if you wanna put it that way. :P
I am watching the guide to Eurovision. I am learning a lot.
I always ignored it until last year. It is hilarious!
I just found out its not live on TV here! Noooooo!
Also just learnt it is on the bigscreen in town. As far as 'big Eurovision party!' goes, I'm not sure I can resist the lure of watching it with thousands of others...
My songs were 3/10ths better. NOOOOOO!!!! :)
Australian Eurovision experts say 'skip the TV broadcast, watch it on the internet live' because delayed isn't the same, and the Australian hosts are very annoying
I'm hoping for sidepodcast live commenting, I know you'll all be watching ;)
Sadly I won't be because I'm going to see Angels and Demons on Saturday night...
I predict it will be rubbish. But I say that about most movies based on books :D
You say breakthrough, I say broken-me.
5am is when the magic happens. Best part of the day ;)
I agree, it is the best part of the day... when I am asleep. :)
5 AM BST or 5 AM AST (Amy Standard Time)? :D
He'll never make you nocturnal, will he? :P
I am sure it will happen. I used to watch religiously, but not for the last couple of years.
We didn't have daily posts last year, so you never know what will happen this time round :)
I imagine that he will, because like he says, he's making small steps towards it. I will go grudgingly, clinging on to sleep with my fingernails, though.
Link of the day for me:
SIX decades of F1 autographs
Simply amazing.
The Outlaws enjoyed it, so I'll give it a go... Not too fussy with movies - I just enjoy them!
Yep ... coz that's when I wake up EVERY SINGLE DAY :(
Hahaha! When you get there, I'm pretty sure you'll ask how you ever survived being a morning person. :P
its always 5am somewhere in the world, and I'm not picky! There has been plenty of awake-for-24 hour days in my past and I'm sure there will be in the future too ;)
How did he get Schumacher and Villeneuve to sign that pic of their 1997 collision?
Wow. Am not an autograph fan but that's certainly some dedication to the cause.
i like that he got Massa to sign a pic of him stuck with the fuel hose in Singapore :D
I have no idea - but it's friggin brilliant! :D
Going through his Picasa collection now - he has MULTIPLE autographs of Enzo Ferrari himself. *jaw on floor*
My Uncle had a few but nothing like that kind of collection!
I'll say! He got autographs of Ascari and Hawthorn - so he must've started when F1 itself started! :O
No silly - he used a time machine! ;)
Why would you need more than one though?
He got one in the 60s, one in the 70s, one in the 80s... I guess each picture had a different era of Ferrari on it? The best one was the 1960s one - Enzo not only signed, he personally replied to his letter.
Ah, okay. Makes sense.
:D :P
The thing is I still don't know why you would need one? So I certainly don't understand multiple ones.
It's a great collection I guess. But it's not something I'd think about collecting.
I'm not here...
Agreed.
Oh don't you start!
I'm not an autograph fan at all which is why I've only ever gotten two.
Clearly this one that I have trumps all the ones in that collection ;)
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/dsc06881-jpg
Its over a year old and this if the first time I've looked at it since I got it. That is why I am not an autograph person.
I only have a few F1 Autographs - Mansell, Amon and Murray Walker. I have a few BTCC ones too. I have met a few 'celebrities' and haven't asked for their autographs too - but the ones I have do feel quite cool to have. It is a strange phenomenom though!
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/dsc06882-jpg
thats the other one I have. Rather than sign the team profile page like every one he signed the ad of his sponsor. How corporate.
LEWIS!!!
you're meant to be more impressed with Heikki ;)
You too?!
I hope I get the chance to ask for Michael Schumacher's autograph in future - that would be more than enough for me. :D
As of now, I have the autographs of Button, Barrichello, Vettel, and Webber. They all came from Sepang. The mandatory autograph sessions FOM created is one of the best ideas they've ever had. :)
Who else is doing that? I actually haven't been around enough to know.
:D Hahaha!
Steven Roy wasn't here all of yesterday, and I think both Lukeh and Pat might have not been here but doing there homework, as well.
*their.
Ahem...err, yes I am?
good man
have we discussed the f1.com spain review video yet?
Morning all
evening :D
Oooh Yay, Brawn GP's twitter account are gonna be doing a similar thing on twitter to Force India at races :D
I'm not sure we have. Is it any good?
Hello there!
the song doesn't really fit, its bartender and the thief by the stereophonics. That song will forever remind me of Gran Turismo 2.
Aww I'm always around to comment. Yesterday I just HAD to stop myself from commenting to finish my assignment and stop myself coming on here, which worked! :D
Oooh Yay, Brawn GP’s twitter account are gonna be doing a similar thing on twitter to Force India at race {Comment #220}
You would never have thought that when I told Force Fans Online that the team was going to have a Twitter account, the reaction was along the lines of "So? I have a Twitter account - what's the significance of this"? Now Force India are leading the Web 2.0 battle between the teams. If only they could find a way of getting the Web 2.0 stuff to make their cars quicker, I would be a very happy supporter indeed. (Still happy with them though :) )
Get Fisi to Twitter and Paul Di Resta or Bruno Senna to drive instead? ;)
Twitter won't let me look at my account now :( Keeps putting up a password screen even though I'm already logged in, and when it does it blanks the screen. No other site is affected, so I don't think it's a virus...
Get Fisi to Twitter and Paul Di Resta or Bruno Senna to drive instead? {Comment #226}
I don't think that would be much help ;) , but maybe Tonio could Twitter to keep his mind sharp while waiting for his big break?
Bizarre... Try clearing your cache.
Bizarre… Try clearing your cache.Comment #229}
Thank you for the advice, Journeyer. Unfortunately I'm on my Dad's computer and I don't want to risk him complaining at me. Oh well, I'll check Twitter when I go back onto my own computer.
Very good, in fact it features Jenson saying "C'mon, Rubens! You can go quicker than that!"
And the most important thing on Bernard's website today is US F1 team story where Peter Windsor and Ken Anderson do some PR about how the car's gonna run and about hiring Danica and basically doing a Brawn next year. The timimg is also right, with FOTA / FIA meeting scheduled to take place this week at least mad Max and Mr E will have something to advertise. Interesting. Italian press is now talking about Fiat (Ferrari), BMW, Mercedes, Renault & Toyota setting up their own series with 3 cars per team and with Valentino Rossi in 3rd Ferrari to create additional interest. I'm all for Loeb in the 3rd Renault!
BIG news:
Ecclestone joins FIA/FOTA meeting
Tomorrow will be huge. Absolutely HUGE.
I am watching tennis. Oh how I have missed it. I need Andy Murray to start losing so he doesn't trouble Rogers #2 ranking.
Lukeh, how goes the programming? :P
Definatly would cause intrest, but I think the chances of it happening are slim to none.
This is ridiculous! Finally managed to get back onto Twitter, but it no longer accepts the correct password...
That is the reason why I allow my browser to remember all my passwords, lol.
I had a C++ assessment exam yesterday for 3 hours that went so and so. Had to create a menu that allowed a user to input new information, view all records and search for a certain key number should they choose. It kinda worked... a few bugs, but good enough for a pass in my opinion. or so I hope... :)
I have a C++ logbook to finish for next week of a load of tasks, most of them are done which is good so I've definitely progressed :) really dislike it still though!
Luckily, it seems to be quite easy to sort out mangled passwords on Twitter. Some web services could learn a lot from it.
Sounds like fun, are you using do visual C++ or making console applications?
Just making console applications, really basic stuff. I think anything more complex would actually make my mind implode.
Haha, I have been doing the same stuff so I know how you feel :P
It's not the most thrilling of subjects personally. I enjoyed Visual Basic but that's because the second word in it's name goes well with my mind :P
Just got that logbook to do, a law exam next Wednesday and an Operating Systems exam in 2 weeks then I'm done for the summer, and can look forward to Goodwood and many other awesome things :D
That is the reason why I allow my browser to remember all my passwords, lol. {Comment #237}
I do that on my own computer, but for power consumption reasons it's not always practical for me to use my computer to go on the internet. Saving your passwords on other people's computers without their permission is poor ettiquette.
Again I know how you feel, but I don't mind C++ that much now been doing it for two years.
Just got that logbook to do, a law exam next Wednesday and an Operating Systems exam in 2 weeks then I’m done for the summer, and can look forward to Goodwood and many other awesome things {Comment #243}
That's good, Lukeh.
I'm going back to college this afternoon to revise for a resit I may or may not need to do (the results of my April exam haven't arrived yet).
I'd probably be alright with it after that amount of time, so I can imagine why you'd be used to it. I've only been studying it for 5 months but that's nearly over.
In light F1 news, someone at the techEDin conference has spotted a Force India car. I can't tell from the Twitter comment where I learned this what possible reason FIF1 could have for sending one (other than it's in Hyderabad), let alone what model was sent. All I can ascertain is that it's somewhere between wherever baxiabhiskek was for the last event of this morning's conference and the lunch hall.
Still, it's the happiest F1-related news item I've read all morning...
Are FIF1 becoming the new fan-friendly RedBull?
If anyone's interested I'm gonna be writing up a blog entry later this afternoon about the history of Formula 1 games, Codemasters (the guys behind the new F1 games coming soon) and just a bit of personal preference and stuff. Or at least something along those lines. Will let you know later when it's all done.
Cool man. Don't forget the really early ones - they still count!
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/05/14/f1-going-to-the-mattresses/#comment-1046
Joe Saward's latest blog post - and he ain't too optimistic... :(
Cool, I had them all from Grand Prix tp GP4
I had 'Ferrari Formula One' and 'Pole Position' - man how times have changed!
Yep, I'll say. I must take a look at the new one next year. haven't played a computer game for years.
Are FIF1 becoming the new fan-friendly RedBull? {Comment #249}
I think so. I certainly hope so because Red Bull itself gots its fan-friendly template from... ...Jordan! Force India, as the inheritor of Jordan, should take as many of its good traits as possible, of which fan-friendliness is perhaps the most powerful.
It shows a lot of promise, but it's going to take some beating to better rFactor...
And most of the Jordan guys are still there so they could easily do it again.
I must say I quite like FIF1 and I cheer them on to score points - nothing like seeing the little guys (in budget, not talent) do well!
rFactor? Like I say - haven't played a game for years.
Luckily Codies have a fantastic heritage of racing games behind them and afantastic reputation for making games that live up to what people expect within motorsport so fingers crossed :)
The only downside with Codies is that they have been known to dumb down the realism (apparently, although IMO it's good enough) but they say they have changed that for this game. It certainly has promise!
They're definitely smart enough and experienced enough to know what the fans want from an F1 gamew so yep, it does have promise :)
I read the other night that whereas they're obviously going for allout simulation, theyre still going to accomodate for a more casual player with an arcade mode so everyone wins really.
I agree with this. Like a lot of people, I like to see the underdog do well so I was gutted when Super Aguri went up, and switched to Force India as my support-them-as-a-back-up-to-my-actual-team team :)
Good plan - because you need to accomodate both if you want to shift copies...
Piero ferrari has an interesting take on the budget cap..
Hehe. I like the comparison.
Two-tiered systems never work. Even in Sportscar racing, and a lot of people complained here that Sebring was a bit weird to watch with so many different types of car on track... so how are F1 fans gonna swallow two tiers?
I caught Flavio on TV late last night. I'm sure he was saying something interesting but my italian language part of the brain had packed up already and gone to bed.
shuttle/hubble - space walk will start in 17 minutes. if it's on schedule ;)
I still want to know where the FIA got findings from the fans about wanting such a system.
I don't think Flav was talking about the Space Shuttle though ;)
I have that problem, I call it 'Shutting my brain off until Flav stops spewing rubbish' ;)
They know we don't - all of this is just a power play so the teams accept the budget cap. It's backfired, that's all :(
I have that problem with EJ...
shuttle - hubble. if you missed the shuttle grabbing the hubble you can view it here
Pity. i probably would have listened to that. It's like those rare moments when a comedian says something intelligent. everyone looks at each other with they "where's the punchline" and then everyone realises "oh wait. he's serious".
probably one of those unpublicised surveys on the f1 website. like the one about driver's points.
Could have been this? http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2009/may/14/flavio-briatore-renault-fia-budget
So he's saying F1 the teams way, or no way then? I wonder if Bernie put him up to that?
Spain video is up!
http://www.formula1.com/play_video.html
thanks :) this will occupy me for a few minutes...
I imagine it was the same story but yesterday's news (daytime) had Renault following Ferrari to leave F1. it was probably midnight when he was on tv - no doubt just trying to get in a story before the next media cycle.
Is there meant to be sound with this?
yeah there should be. my picture was jumpy but the sound was fine. but opening up another browser now - so yes there is sound. make sure the mute on the video player (below picture to the right) is not turned on
turn on your speakers? stereophonics!
My whole world seems to be on mute today.Don't know why I can't hear anything
Bah, it's really hard to concentrate on writing when you have a nose running worse than Adrian Sutil in a marathon :(
Don't have a cold or anything!
Swine flu?
:( for you but :) at the analogy!
Renault are flogging off a load of old bits - stupidly expensive most of them.
An exhaust from 2006 - €3500
2005 Front wing flap - €2500
2005 rear wing end plate - €1500
Although things start as low as €40 - for a titanium stud, a butterfly valve, a valve or a cam follower...
http://authentics.ing-renaultf1.com
Swine Flutil
:(
I'd be expecting Ferrari to be buying some of these
Yeah but what are you gonna do with a wing endplate? Hang it on the wall?
...And Mclaren to photocopy them ;)
which song? :-/
Space walk in about 15 minutes
They already come framed
I have seen a front wing coffee table, and a rear wing one too thinking about it.
F1 wheel tables are quite common also.
:)
Remember it wasn't McLaren that did that, just one or two or three of their employees....
Bartender and the Thief, when they were, yknow, good and not annoyingly pretentious.
the bartender and the thief
But they do have an intention of breaking with Max... :D
Lukeh and Amy, you rock! :D
heh. :P
Hmm. That's a hard sell to the missus, I can assure you!
i would gaze upon the bright blue and mourn for the loss of that livery
i like to pretend its the instrumental, and thats its Gran Turismo 2.
Good call. 2005-2006 Renault was one of the best liveries ever on a race car :)
It's not fair really. I used to really like them, and still do love their older stuff such as that, but in more recent years Kelly Jones and their musical direction have turned into a world of a prententious garbage.
Buh *ahem* just my brief opinion. :P
You need a playroom where you can do whatever you want. :D
I love my playroom. When we finally move house I'm going to have the whole basement to myself. :D
I do have a 'playroom' - but it's full of model cars, Ferrari flag and calendar, Mag wheel clock, Senna pic and other assorted cr*p of mine...
It's at least better than my mate in NZ ... a mad Holden and Peter Brock fan, but his wife would not allow ANYTHING in the house and so he hung everything in his tiny garage :(
I have the opposite fear - what if I end up with a man who won't let me have my playroom? I keep accumulating framed F1 pics, and any future house of mine needs a home theatre room...
Sigh, you will make some guy very happy saying that!
Such a man does not exist... :)
:) Look out I think we have another spin off...SidepodSingles.
Well they do say opposites attract...
I'm off to bed.
Sleep Amy, don't it forget now.....
they do in Melbourne. So weird, gp host city yet every man I meet is "F1? cars suck, RARRR FOOTY RARRRR'
the others who actually like F1 are all 40, or I meet them at the pub on Sundays where they are with their girlfriends.
I'm sure they do, but they are in the minority. ;)
poor amy. i'm sure the right guy will come along soon. :)
bizarre! i did a double post without me knowing...! i've edited it to reply to amy. :)
Ah Melbourne. I forgot it was the home of Aussie Rules - the NASCAR of oddly-shaped ball sports...
Hey! What's wrong with being over 40?
Thats my playroom. ;)
Although I only have a couple of framed F1 pics up as most of the pictures at the moment are my own photo's of aircraft *most commonly Vulcan and Lancaster*
Unfortunately it's also my home office.. so it's got a wall of computer gear.
But 60" TV, surround sound, mini fridge and sofa make it comfy.
they call it football but they BOUNCE it.
40 years old? I guess they grew up when Alan Jones was winning races and a championship. :)
I have to draw the line at men old enough to be my father ;)
I once watched a full game of Aussie Rules. Afterwards I felt a little confused what my name was, where my brain was and generally spun out like a merry go round, due to the fact I had no idea what the hell had just transpired in front of me.
Bit of a strange one, that aussie rules...
In US football, they run with it. :P
LOL
I do find it odd, but I still find it easier to understand than cricket. :)
You need to play it to understand it. Or in my mum's case, watch it for 40 years
Australian Sport Summary
---------------------------------------
Cricket is like baseball, except different
Aussie Rules is like gaelic football, except different
Rugby League is like Rugby Union, except different
simple.
Space shuttle space walk is about to start
video is here
It's about to be sunrise. If you miss this sunrise, just wait 90 minutes. they see more sunrises than Amy ;)
oops. work link instead there....
real nasa link
V8 Supercars is like Motorsport, except different ;)
V8 racing is like NASCAR, except they turn right as well
...wha...? :P
cricket: hit it as far as possible.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYij-UpaoyA
I feel all old now, being over40. I better go to bed
That's Amy's fault ;)
check out a 12 second video of Massa having a laugh
oh, Hungary 2008 you say. What a great race...
Why do you say that? was it one of those boring races? I remember Heikki got the win and a ferrari blew up (massa?) right near the end. I love it when that happens ;)
Yes, it was boring. Very boring. Massa was driving away with it. But then Heikki won :D
spacewalk started a few minutes ago.
i thought it might have been because i was thinking it was a boring race but i'm not one of these people that remembers these things.
space is cool
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8049780.stm
Why??? Just Why??? What an awesome site that was - and it never harmed anybody!
only in nerd safe places like this
Brian Cooley off BOL hates Space with a passion though :(
i cannot justify what they did but who was in charge of their IT
Some have asked whether or not we had back ups. Yes, we dutifully backed up our servers every day. Unfortunately, we backed up the servers between our two servers.
i want to do that zero-g plane thing like coulthard did.
Perhaps that's all he could afford? The point is, it's so lame! And it could destroy the whole Flight Sim community if all the moddable stuff goes - that was the strength of MS FS and I think Microsoft relied on it...
I get your point, and agree with it. I know nothing about the website either but if you have a server (or even a hard drive) you should leave a backup offsite. Maybe google has a cache copy of the whole site. perhaps microsoft might already have that and everything will be okay...
I just want to go to space. a plane isn't good enough for me anymore;)
time to buddy up to Branson!
his daughter was working next to where i was (different building) but I only found out once she left. i missed my chance...
Absolutely. Which reminds, better get round to backing up my HD before the computer blows again!
Here you go guys, a bit about F1 and videogames
http://toata.blogspot.com/2009/05/15-finding-right-gear-for-gaming.html
I'm not one to always follow this advice though, but I think about it - does that count? I've got duplicates of a lot of stuff but not everything. My ipod crashed recently and I had files stored on it and they are gone forever. it's best not to think about what i have lost...
think i'm going to disappear for a bit now. I have too many things going this afternoon. bye :)
Great read, but dude, you forgot the EA F1 series of games!
Ah you're right! Will add an extra bit in there. Can't forget the brilliant Career Challenge
Have added a bit, I say a bit but another paragraph, of stuff about EA's f1 games. :P
Wicked. Did you know that rFactor is from the same development team that made the EA F1 series of games?
F1 Challenge for the PC was all about the mods anyway!
I had known about that but I never knew if it was true or not... that's very cool. :)
I wish I could love F1 games, I buy them, play them once, am rubbish, then never play them again.
It is. EA allowed then to develop the Physics engine and also sold it to SimBin (GTR, GTR2, RACE). There's rumours of an rFactor2 which sound awesome!
Easy - Le Mans. With Audi reducing involvement, Ferrari coming in would rejuvenate the currently struggling series.
Once you get a thumping stereo, a 24" widescreen monitor and a force feedback wheel with a shifter, they're hard to put down!
You won't get better if you only play it once. :P
Yeah but even with Ferrari in it, Le Mans still wouldn't have the same prestige as F1... Although I'm sure Audi and Peugeot would LOVE to beat them!
I used to loooove doing the license tests on Gran Turismo, then I got GT5 Prologue and they weren't in it :(
I guess I find racing boring but I enjoy doing little random challenges. If the next-gen F1 game has them I shall get many hours of enjoyment :)
The Wii one definitely has challenges
...Like using the Wii Wheel thingy? Seriously, I bought Ferrari challenge and it's unplayable!
I don't have a Wii....I have a PSP though, isn't that one going to be the same?
I doubt it - the Wii will use all the motion sensor stuff and the PSP will be the mini-PS3 version I reckon...
Most likely, except without the whole moving things about stuff. :P
Although the amount of people who ive seen move their PSP in the direction they turn on racing games...!
I saw a man play Need For Speed Underground on his iPod Touch yesterday. God did he look silly!
I might take a scan of this magazine I bought last week saying all the details they got from an interview with Codies talking about Wii and PSP.
Back in the 1950s, Le Mans was every bit as pretigious as F1. With Ferrari and some proper organization, I don't see why it can't become that again. :)
In terms of graphics, no. But in terms of gameplay, probably. I think scenarios are included there as well - similar to F1 2005 (the version before F1 2006 on the PSP).
My brother used to push the controller toward the tv everytime he pushed X to jump in Crash Bandicoot. It drove me batty watching him.
I can't remember the last time I bought a game for my PSP though... I don't tend to buy them if they're coming out on PS3, I buy the PS3 version instead :D
Well it hasn't been that way since 1990 and you can thank Bernie and Max for that - effectively neutering the sport because it threatend F1. Since Group C Le Mans has had good years, but has not been the same. The ALMS came close, but that has died off a bit too now...
Let me tell you now - Ferrari coming in would change that instantly. They obviously wouldn't challenge F1 right away - that will take a lot of work. But the number of TV viewers they will take with them will be very big, to say the least.
I think for a casual viewer, the one hard thing about watching racing though is it's not a consistent schedule. Having to actually look up when the races are makes it less easy for the casual observer to get hooked. And for LeMans series it's even worse because they race less often than even F1 do.
Ferrari last entered in Le Mans in the Mid-90's WSC days with the 333SP. IIRC that didn't add as much interest in the UK as McLaren entering their F1 roadcar. You are right, but I don't think all the F1 fans will suddenly watch Le Mans because Sportscar racing is different to F1...
http://twitpic.com/55h3u reminds me of how much I hate the 'its Monaco and we have diamonds' rubbish.
That's a great picture though.
Have we discussed Jochen Rindt - The Opera yet?
See, you sing a song about an F1 driver, it gets on the radio and somebody had to try and go one better! Damn Austrians! :)
Ah, F1 The Musical would be awesome. Like Starlight Express but with cars instead of trains.
never gets old does it?
:D
actually I notice this year they've gone for a "1" instead of the signature.
Does Heikki get diamonds too?
he got them last year, so I hope so. A big diamond '2' isn't quite as impressive though, really.
I love the tweet @sidepodcast!
apparently they messed up his invite and he arrived at the factory two days early :(
oops!
Heikki gets to stick pasta shells on his and cover them with silver sparkles :D
Probably takes more diamonds though.
:D
but theres more diamonds in a 2 ;)
howdy all, im currently fixing my 4th bike puncture in 2 weeks, woot :(
how is everyone?
I thought they would've given up the year that they lost one.
that was jaguar.
was still steinmetz though. And Christines favourite driver ;)
ahh yes. true.
He can't be trusted.
this is what we wrote about mclaren's diamonds in 2008:
"Oh yeah, they’re pulling that old trick again. You know, two drivers, two helmets, one Monaco, add some shiny rocks… that’s bound to create some headlines."
i'll forward to the fifth driver.
but look! this is last years effort, these are so very different to the 2009 effort ;)
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/dsc06883-jpg
:D
Now see here: Litespeed F3 have announced they're going to lodge an F1 entry – with Mike Gascoyne in charge!
who?
anyone seen the news about Joe Tandy (FFord/F3 team owner)??? Very sad
Mr C, have you seen Andrew's reply?
force india just noted that they've been straight-line testing at santa pod.
This response to "the man himself, the diamond number 1" is worth linking:
http://twitter.com/barneystephens/statuses/1795229209
I wonder why thefifthdriver hasn't replied...
ooh, i forgot. i read now.
Some bloke who used to work for Toyota.
Ha!
Underperforming F3 self-builders.
"We will, however, look at how we label that content on the indexes to avoid the sort of confusion that seems to have arisen here."
that is a start. still not sure he understands the point i'm making. ah well, i tried.
arent they a new team to F3 this year?
surely they wont get it
thanks! ;)
that'll please flav.
he hasn't said anything new from his first reply
He's trying to make sure you understand that the BBC is not GMM.
Ha.
Evenin' all! I just spent the better part of an hour catching up with the comments.
Thank you for posting Ultimate KAOS. My brain has now drained out of my ears.
very much underperforming by the looks of it. :-/
i understand that it didn't used to be.
is it wrong that I want the F1 credit card? I feel like I'm falling for a Bernie money making scam. But my current one doesn't have a car on it :(
Uh-oh... :P
But their web site is just as good as Brawn's!
erm... no comment. :D
I've got a sticker of the 2007 Ferrari car if you want it...
No, I'm with you. I got a credit car out here to a circuit that isn't even near my house just because I thought the track design was really cool.
:D
:D
the 2007 Ferrari is the one that stole Kimi from me :(
I've got a kimi sticker too? It's this set of stickers...
hes not wearing black so no deal ;)
Maybe you could sharpie the right clothes on him?
I did mention it earlier, i've scanned a magazine talking about f1 2009/2010 on the wii and psp. Can be found here and here.
ahh, cheers sir.
must read the comments now.
completely forgot about it until i read the magazine myself just a sec ago and realised I said Id scan them :D
GRRRR....
Reading this month's F1 Racing - best issue of the year so far, lots of excellent articles. :)
Hey, can anyone else access gmail?
Yep, mine works just fine...
yip
Okay, well searching twitter I'm not the only one... so it must be regional or something.
the problem with visual last.fm, is i now have to look at pictures of jim steinman as well as listen to him.
Afternoon all. Starting to add more sidepodtwitter accounts from the wiki. How're we doing?
Hello world.
Feels odd not having anything to say right about now. Erm. Go Timo?
I should be sleeping but instead i'm ebaying. So I'm great :D
So I'm stuck on a train in the middle of nowhere - reason being is that someone threw themselves in front of another train in front of us. I don't know what to think or say about this really...
i've clearly missed something again... diniz?
Ahh yes. I compared myself to him for being consistantly mid-table in the Pitlane Fanatic Quiz.
yay for ebay!
ah, ok.
boo for everything I want to buy being in the UK!
For followers of the lower formulae, British F3 team boss Joe Tandy has passed away at the age of 26.
Autosport article
Isn't there a localised ebay for australia?
there is, but theres not a lot of f1 stuff on it
don't some of them have international shipping? i remember buying my 2001 season DVD in the UK...
The F1 Waffler is no more.
To be replaced by The Northern Waffler. Basically realised I had loads of ideas that were non-F1 related and I needed to share
http://www.thenorthernwaffler.blogspot.com
Sorry for the change, probably very impratical, but please take note
oh they do, its just veeeeery expensive
noted. i'd ask r.g. to update the wiki, but...
hehe
well, it's a matter of perspective, I guess... I thought the shipping was inexpensive, all things considered. :)
depends what you buy, i buy a lot and its not bad, but I'm trying to buy about 20 magazines and they're heavy
ech - no wonder. :P are you buying them from different sellers? some sellers waive shipping fees if you buy in bulk like that.
nope, same guy. I've sent him a question about it but am yet to hear an answer :)
you have a fighting chance of waived fees. :D
hmmm... to sleep early? or to sleep late? hmmm... :D
how is it that you even have a choice?
erm... i decide when i want to go to bed? doesn't everyone? :P
no. i can't got bed until i'm sleepy.
but even then you decide whether you'd sleep or you'd take an Unnamed Energy Drink. :D
the drink is mostly used during race weekends. in the week i have to wait until i'm tired.
that's the downside of being nocturnal. :P
I won't be adding mine, unless a link to hardly updated twitter is ok? :P
Funny Side of the Drivers aka taking a photo at the right moment: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPay1QzRZM0&NR=1
Best part around 1:20 with Barichello.
Hey again... So we took a bus to another station and now I'm back on the train - but by my calculations I'm going to be at least 2 hours late home :(
I'm starving and annoyed because I planned to actually do something productive this evening. The moral of the story is don't live far away from your work, people!
Do you plan to heed your own advice? ;)
Depends... Unfortunately it's not only up to me. Thing is with Danish trains, they're quite good normally with timings, but when they get it wrong it's disasterous.
Maybe DSB is the Ferrari of train services :(
Right - quiet time for everyone. Will go to bed, then. G'night. :D
Yours will probably still be better than ours. Over here, train timetables don't even exist. :P
Hi all
spacewalk underway. No video coverage for the next 25 minutes though.
True. Mustn't grumble I Spose. Thing is, train is the only way to get home :(
When did this turn into sidepodsleep? To follow on from previous comments I decide when I am going to bed then discover at that time I am wide awake then when I eventually decide I am going to bed someone here keeps me talking or another hour
I'm struggling to keep my eyes open so I'll probably come to regret still being up, but I'm determined to finish what i'm doing.
what's your point?
;)
My point is that the reason many of us don't get enough sleep is because we spend so much time on here discussing our lack of sleep
ahhhhhhh.
Afternoon.
How are we all this afternoon?
Late home :(
someone is outbidding me, this is UNACCEPTABLE
It's quiet today. Too quiet.
afternoon flibster
quiet but calm :)
whats disturbing Amy's sleep pattern now?
Not me.
ebay :D I want to sleep but I hate waking up to learn I've lost auctions. I don't like setting maximum bids because I'm always willing to increase it if I'm losing. I need to stop looking at auctions as fights:)
whatcha (attempting) buying?
old mclaren magazines from before i was a member, and the red bulletin from when heikki won :D
haha, i should have known :P
the pdf.....it just doesn't cut it....
oh ok, less exciting ;)
We finally have video from the spacewalk
Anyone else looking for a good reason to stay up... there's a woot off today.
a what now?
It's a super sale at woot... often some very good deals to be had.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woot#Woot-Off
Though right now it's not that great unless you're planning on learning guitar...
hehehehe.
And now we've gone from a $5 stand fan to a $30 upconverting DVD player...
I have given up on the red bulletin.
what about the mclaren mags?
no one else is bidding on those
haha, awesome
Gold's ryder cup in 2010 is going to be comical; just saw on the local news that the redevelopment of newport city centre has been delayed again; just to give you a general idea, the redevelopment was agreed in 2007, and work on that was supposed to start march 2008 ready for the Ryder cup.
I started my job in january 2008 in the middle of our city centre expecting to be there not for long because of this... it's now may 2009, and our shop now has a closure time of 'Late 2010', so the redevelopment plan that was supposed to be for rhe Ryder cup won't even start until after it, let alone be done. It's the same old thing here tbh, I know the credit crunch didnt hep but we know have half a centre centre completely empty because shops moved out in preparation, albeit now for no reason it seems :/
*half a city centre, even
Sorry it's a bit off topic, just a bit of a rant i suppose
puts the challenge donington faces into perspective.
hehe :)
I dunno why it's annoyed me, it keeps me in a job!
Sounds pretty useless.
Will it affect the Ryder Cup or just the tourism of it?
my home city decided to build a new stadium for the 2010 rugby world cup back in 05 or 06. They're still arguing over who should pay for it. It takes more than a year to build a stadium so the world cup will be long gone and they'll still be fighting.
Don't know if anyone has mentioned it but Mike Gascoyne is starting an F1 team
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/75305
i'm sorry, could you be any more gmm? that wasn't quite sensationalist enough for us ;)
Things you never expected to see
The Salzburg Rally Club is putting on a n opera about Jochen Rindt. Much alcohol must have been injured to come up with that plan
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/75303
It'll affect the tourism no doubt, we have a high street but our main shopping centre honestly had about 5 shops because it's so empty thanks to the redevelopment. Where I work was part of half the city centre to be knocked down because the general area is very ugly and grey and just not with the times, and rebuilt with new shopping centres, allsorts being brought up to the 21st century and show off the city as a nice place
all we have at the moment is half a bus station, a lot of cranes building a car park that is not completely pointless if there's no new shopping centre, and a lot of construction that isn't going to be used for another year at least. very very silly. The actual Celtic Manor Hotel where the ryder cup is being held iscompletely other side of the city (I can see it from my house :D) so they can hide the ugly city centre, but it still is a really poor effort for us as local people, and im sure it wont leave a nice taste on people coming in for the golf
I object. I quoted a source. The story sounds like bull to me too. I didn't even know he had set up a company.
fyi: the website of mgi ltd: http://www.mgiaviation.com/
hehe.
I wonder why he chose aviation. You would have thought he would have gone for something more general lik MGI consultancy
His publisher dropped him and he was going to self-publish.According to his website it will be available last July
http://www.nigel-stepney.com/
ahh, sidepodtime.
dropped him?? i can't imagine why...oh yeah, him getting sued for being honest about everyone ;)
:D
Still having problems with tweetdeck, how annoying :(
FakePiquetJr: Going to practice for Monaco on the Playstation, I won't stop until I finish a lap without crashing
Maybe someone should tell him to stop practicing with Sato?
especially considering the site appears to advertise that he's running a pub?
he can do a perfectly good job of crashing by himself ;)
I'm sure he's just scouting for a good place to spin out
All my Red Bulletin talk has sent me back to my archives. i started at issue 1, as you do, and whats the first thing i see? Diamonds in Kimis helmet at Monaco 2005. Sigh.
Maybe he could ask Kimi about good places to crash in Monaco?
He is obviously looking for work and since everything he did in motor racing is someone else's IP he can't fill the site with that. So he filled it with his pub and boat and put a comment on the bottom that he was looking for work. Maybe Ollie needs to have a word with him on website design.
Are these back issues, or currently available ones? Anything anyone here could find for you?
I send stuff overseas a lot, and royal mail is quite reasonable to the commonwealth.... if over a couple of Kgs then surface is sensible, but its not actually that slow (quotes 56 days, but often its a lot less than that - 35 is possible surface to aus. from here). http://sg.royalmail.com/portal/rm/PriceFinderResults?pageId=pc_sltc_rm_results&keyname=rmPriceFinderResults&catId=23500532 should give you a rough idea of costs though.
:D
can you call it MGI Taverns if you only own one?
More spam on dropio
back issues back to 1998, and they were only ever sent to Team McLaren members so they're rather hard to track down :( someone on ebay is selling 47 of them which would be a nice chunk of what I need, but his reserve is stupidly high
If Max finds out he is lying that could be the end of his F1 team
Can't you get them from McLaren or do they want stupid money?
:P
link?
So I can go hunt elsewhere for you and know what I'm looking for?
If it doesn't make the reserve its probably worth making him an offer though -)
they apparently don't have an archive back that far that they can provide to members, and they want the cover price of 4.50 each, they go for cheaper on ebay.
I worry about these astronauts training in a big swimming pool. One just radioed that the bolt is out of the bath tub. I don't think they are takingthis seriously
is it on nasa.tv?
this is the big group of them and this is one I already have that is stupidly overpriced.
link fail sorry!
yes
how do you plan to get them to you from kent?
that. along with the stupid reserve, is why I haven't bid on those ones
ah,right
Hmmm - well, there doesn't seem to be a reserve on that auction.
DHL is an expensive way of shipping them though... especially overseas (erk!) unless he has already bought a slot for the UK through parcel2go (which is likely given his quoted 48 hour price which just happens to match up with the parcel2go 48 hour within UK price lol)
Will go and have a look around for you :-)
he doesn't even offer overseas shipping, i don't understand that with sellers, surely if someone overseas is willing to pay for the whole cost its no different to posting it down the road. I am still winning the other 13 I am bidding on though, so it might be time to head to bed. Thanks for your help! :)
this is not an F1 question but does anyone know how i can stream the bbc from outside the country, eg working proxy etc. for reasons that are my own strange fascination i want to watch the bbc broadcast of Eurovision. no wogan this year, but hey, I need to see some fun being made at some countries. I believe I can get the video off the eurovision site, but I want that english wit. any help?
Have you had a search on mayasian sellers? There seem to be a fair few with this magazine as well? Might be easier/cost less to get them to you as well.
it will probably be on justin.tv somewhere
you mean justin.tv is not just for f1?!
nope, its also for gp2 ;)
ooh i havent but now i shall!
Sleep is felayed again then?
:) I think i found a feed. doesn't start for 22 minutes. i used to have eurovision parties back in Oz but it's hard to approach the subject of "Do you want to laugh at how bad european music is?" ;) [To the Europeans, I do know that ESC is not typical, but it's fun to have a laugh]
we're trying something new that drop.io released today.
come join us: http://drop.io/sidepodcast
Amy, what are your sleeping hours these days? 4:39am for you right?
You can purchase a UK IP address from a proxy company, the problem is to stream live stuff off of the BBC site, you also need a TV License.
I'm there. will there be eurovision? ;)
hahaha. no.
Hmm. Paying for this is just not worth it, but thanks for the info :)
im there! presentation?
delayed.
I hate this keyboard
yup, enter a name to join.
according to SBS the whole of Australia should be doing it.
http://www.sbs.com.au/eurovision/blog/article/id/109535/n/What-s-planned-for-your-Eurovision-party
I realise you'll all think differently about me now...
Signed up for presentation
If you don't want to pay for it, you can try figuring out the horrors of setting it up through Tor. It's a lot more work... but it does work. Just set yourself up to use Tor, and then change the Tor settings to only us UK based proxies.
http://www.torproject.org/
oh yes
yes. we like you more ;)
I was having parties before it was cool ;) My flatmate and I were stunned when people were begging for an invite 360 days before the next one. My conclusion was that some people just don't get it. The voting goes longer than the Brownlow Medal Count.
hehe
last night i did the nico rosberg trick of dropping something whilst sleeping, tonight i appear to be not sleeping at all. thank god its friday tomorrow.
I was noticing :) Is it hard keeping up with things in a different time zone?
the fact its delayed on tv is rubbish though, I want to watch it live! so i might be up all night more than once this week :D Don't get me started on the Brownlow, for some reason I watched it last year and couldn't understand why it went ALL NIGHT.
I don't understand this presentation thing... stuff just keeps appearing and disappearing!
not really, even if i wasnt spcing i'd be up doing something non productive.
This drop.io presentation thingy is pretty cool. I'm just amazed a cake was being interviewed, take that pedalo!
It would be better with a live show so that we knew what was happening
Yeah I hated the delay too. when non-SBS people had no idea what Eurovision was, it was easy to get through the day without knowing, but then it got a lot harder. i used to keep off the radio and tv all day. tragic really...
plus synchronised video. we can all watch together at the same time.
i think we're just watching people upload things, right?
Ohhhh... That makes sense then. Now where do I find the schedule for the live shows?
I can see this could be a powerful tool
:) I understand completely...
sorry, explanations later. imagine you're watching a live podcast.
I'm writing a blog post here, this better be good...
That's cos we're just testing :)
I'm tempted to go and watch it in Federation Square on the big screen, I think thats tragic too...
It's gotomeeting.com
Do we not get to watch the video?
No live commenting from their though
You don't need a TV license for iPlayer.
very similar. except free!
laptop and 3g? i can live comment anywhere!
And back to writing, see y'all in a bit
I like your thinking. This could be fun
For the live streaming stuff you do. I don't know how they determine you have one, but it says on the site you do.
It's only tragic if you're the only one that goes. Take a flag!
Not for long without a power socket
I'm thinking next week at the pub for Monaco I need to turn up early and get the only table with a powerpoint.
iplayer apparently works for radio, but only sometimes, for those outside the UK. for free. but i think justin tv will do me fine today. and i guess i'll be around on saturday night as well.
:D
are Finland in it? I'd like to support them if they are
You need to look at their most famous entrant. Somewhere on youtube you should be able to find Lordi. They are a little bit unusual
Yes they are
ah yes, I remember them!
Thanks for the repost ;) How long to go Amy? :)
Finland are in it, but it's nothing compared to Lordi from two or three years back. but not on tonight's show because they qualified 2 days ago for the final
Lordi Eurovision
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NG3bzjVz_A
gotomeeting rocks. Use it for support rather frequently.
did try logmein.com - but that wasn't as fast and more expensive...
Best Ever :)
According to dropio there is anothr presentation happening soon
good times
although eurocvision still needs more lithuanian guys sceraming they are the winners
I might watch the final live online then bob on down to Fed Square for the delayed coverage just to see how many people are there. I have a Finnish flag somewhere I can dig out :D
still playing.
hehe. i prefer the russian/ukrainian? lemonhead lookalikes doing a robot dance about 5 years back - the song "the password". riveting.
www.justin.tv/dragonblades2
http://www.eurovision.tv/esctv?program=2570
I got a log out a few minutes ago saying end of presentation
I just like the vote people saying Bosnia and Herzegovina,
still running. not sure what happened there. video sync not working though.
me too.
off to watch ESC. later folks...
I watched a show tonight where they had all the times the vote people screwed up. Good fun.
ESC? watching one key on your keyboard might get boring ;)
Evening all :) Missed anything big?
I love it when the voting sequences between the hosts and the countries they go to are always mega awkward. Good times.
ok now i ACTUALLY am going to sleep. yes. right now. ill be back in 4 hours when I get to work ;)
So we need sidepodspace to go a stage further than just talking about it. How hard can it be for us to start our own space program?
:)
Wondering how long it will be until
'Hello Moscow, you are both looking beautiful tonight'
#
night:)
sidepodspace - hmm. i'd be really keen on starting that but ESC has dancing Bundy Rum bears..
You can't sleep while I am trying to start our own space program. We have space craft to design and a few quid to find to finance it.
*cue silence for 10 seconds*
'Hullo to you from Moscow!!'
Step One: Buy a Reliant Robin.
have stopped presentation now. some bits are still flaky, but it's only a beta.
might able to do some interesting things with it, like live comment on an f1 documentary or old races, if we can ensure everyone is watching it in sync.
early days though. appreciate everyone popping over.
Night Amy
Oh yeah, can't beat the delayed reaction
it's definitely got potential for ideas!
happy to help. the BBC have forgotten to plug in their microphones. a lot of clunking around. hilarious. like NASA the other day.
night!
Croatia song=rubbish
This could be something big if it lets the hole community get in sync on something.
Can't agree with you more
I just got a pop up on dropio about an unresponsive script. Thebrowser automatically switched to the dropio tab
Too slow. no costume or key changes. and therefore rubbish.
Good night Amy. Rememebr to use a water bottle and not your laptop
agreed. we'll keep playing.
very beta then!
Irelands on the other hand has flashing lights and everything
Ireland have got a rock song! No folk in sight.
Deep lyrics: You say you're sorry, but you're not.
Ooh a GT fan, eh? I like it ;)
Would like to see them advance.
dropping in to say hi from paris airport :-0
the lyrics?
Latvia is here
http://www.eurovision.tv/event/artistdetail?song=24696&event=1481
howdy sir. how was your meal?
happy travels :)
No, Ireland in general.
Latvia's singer reminds me too much of Mike Gascoyne
Hi. Hows things?
how can you be sure it's not ;)
Serbia is funny....
trust me, have a look
www.justin.tv/dragonblades2
It so is
food was good, even the big Bacardi CEO flew in from Bermuda. but hay fever made it a bit difficult to enjoy
ahh bugger. how long until your flight leaves?
2 hours
blimey. are you at CDG?
yep, terminal E, there is absolutelly nothing here (other than fashion stores, but one can't eat Hermes scarf)
you've got 2 hours, you could make a start? Find a TV and watch eurovision...
:D
we're here for ya, although you can't eat a doohickey either.
will have to do with Air France dinner on the plane :-)
For anyone who doesn't know there is a big scandal in British politics just now about members of parliament making obscene profits on expenses. It looks like everyone's second favourite Finn is in the same mess.
http://grandprixdiary.com/2009-grand-prix-drivers/kimi-embroiled-in-expenses-scandal
Interesting ;)
Wouldn't surprise me if there's large orders of oversided hats and ice cream in there.
Oh and vodka. ;)
Evening everyone
http://www.bbc.co.uk/northernireland/nw200/
North West 200 Live!
evening jackie
ciao :)
I guess I have missed loads in my couple of days off
Erm......I'll come back later, then...bye.
I thought you were quiet!
Actually there's only been three comments for the whole week.
I was just a bit F1'd out
think you forgot to add the 000 at the end of the 3
I just bought wine, crisps and a dip especially. If I'm going to sit through that I'm going to make myself enjoy it. I remember live commenting it on F1NGers 2 or 3 years ago with the aid of alcohol and snacks (in moderation kids), although we didn't have proper live commenting tools, just a newsgroup..
btw, evening :-)
It's not Eurovision tonight is it?
semi final is now
http://www.justin.tv/dragonblades2
big one is on saturday night and i'll be here...
For the record, tonight I AM here.
I appear to be twittering it now.
I'll be watching and love commenting if enough people wil :D although im not watching the semis so the true horror of the entries can be unleashed on saturday night
Eek, political voting, a bit like the FIA
I totally get that, but the problem is you miss out on some really bad stuff :)
That's my tactic too ... don't want to spoil the surprise!
not so much anymore. there is a new jury system - phone voting is only 50% or something
You want to wait to see Serbia
No I don't think so.
assuming they get through tonight..
I think the juries are from Latvia, Ukraine and Belarus though... ;)
semi final YES. on now.
Ah yes the semis. I'm ignoring them because I think they shouldn't exist. Technically this means I should ignore the main event too...
Short disappearance to arrange food. Have only just got home.
hehe.
There's usually the odd song worth a bit of a laugh, like that Ukranian entry from a couple of years back Link
i saw the preview show on last saturday night and i think this character was on. i didn't even know there was preview show - they had some winner from previous years like Moscow by Genghis Kahn, if anyone remembers that.
No, that's correct. They lost it when Kelly broke the guitar that gave them their unique sound, and then they fired what's his name with Brian May's hair.
The astronauts are re-entering the space shuttle at the end of their spacewalk. They went about half an hour longer than planned. I haven't been paying a lot of attention o it and I missed the first few hours so I don't know if they had problems or not.
Stuart Cable. He had a tv program on bbc wales as well that was awesome. :(
No they won't.
Saw it before I came into comments tonight. Terrible.
I have now :(
http://www.crash.net/F3/News/146761/2/joe_tandy_killed_in_car_accident.html
That was fantastic!
How about these?
France 2008 (skip to about a minute in): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_e2gCFchH90
Spain 2008: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51YDY9vfqLw (5 Pints!)
Here comes the Ukraine. Could be a laugh.
ahh the Russell Brand impersonators. Good times, it confused me then, it confuses me now
Still think this is the best eurovision song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=puka5XaVIyI
love the solo dance
yeah we loved this one too!
The only words involved
'We are the winners, of eurovision'
Maybe the Sidepodnation should send Christine to sing for us?
Awesome!
Did anyone notice in the Spanish one that he sings the line "You can dance it with Alonso"?
no I missed that. The last song is on now, and I'm frankly disappointed overall. although the DJ in this song is pretty funny.
I meant last year's one that I linked too...
that one was funny too - made up stuff from memory. i hope we get one or two funny ones on saturday :)
hey chiki chiki!
loved that with his little guitar :D
Now, surely only Brian May (and, curiously, Brian May's wife) have Brian May's hair.
Oh dear. That one had me in stitches. Genius.
Who remembers this epic performance from the UK?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7JSPh286spM
*plugs ears*
Anyone else ever fiddled expenses? I feel like I've missed a trick.
Noooooooooooooooo. I'd have done better than that bloomin lot
Sam Smith from Lola sent a tweet out linking to this press release: http://www.lola-group.com/newsstory.asp?NewsId=54
Daz Simpson was my fav from the UK recently
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1WXL67X2IA
I know someone who has. The lack of lawyers on my part prevent me on saying who.
That. Was. Epically. Bad. I think MY singing was better than that!
Boo to you for posting a geolocked video!
Looks like Lola want some brownie points with Max
Same here. I have friends that do it.
Actually the best one I heard was a guy that put an expense report for a 67 cent clip!
really? that's weird. i'm in italy and it's not italian,
try this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gEBBkqkH7xM&feature=related
Best. Nil. Points. Ever!
I'm now maintaining the 3 main entries to be USF1, Lola and Penske.
if you travel to a foreign country for work - collect everyone's receipts because noone can read them. i was at a conference in finland and my receipts made their way back with colleagues to the UK. not mentioning names...
If they were going to fail spectacular. They did that.
At least it wasn't worse than 2007, and that got points.
Sounds like a fair bet to me...
The 'other' one (about plane flying) is *still* being sung by the smalls in this house however many years later it is?
I have never so much needed a bangingheadonwall smilie here, as I do with that thought.
I feel really sorry for you.
don't remember this one. any more hints?
A long time ago a photographer I worked with included on his invoice a very detailed breakdown of expenses he'd incurred on a shoot, including a frappuccino and a cinnamon whirl at the airport. I couldn't help but disseminate this information in the ALMS paddock, and to this day he is known as "Frappuccino Regis".
It was long-established practice for some F1 hacks (not me!) to claim for meals out where the costs had actually been shared by all concerned. Someone would pocket the receipt and dutifully provide a photocopy for all.
They do seem to be the most credible...
Just listening to Jenson's Barcelona diary on YT. He calls Andrew Shovlin "Shov". I could see the makings of a new double act here.

I now have it as an earworm, and am going to hum a few bars of a certain spc parody (which was the last earworm, but no where near as annoying as this one) in an attempt to shift it.
If all else fails I will resort to the Pugwash theme. I would resort to Absinthe, but I don't think that the passenger would appreciate it :-D
I think if I ever had a job willing to pay for things, then yeah I'd be claiming everything. Why would I want to pay for something?
i'm about to remember,,,
The trouble with the vending machines in Japanese hotel lobbies is that they don't dish out receipts. And last year I realised – too late – that the yen had stiffened rather a lot against the pound relative to when I was last in Japan.
the Brawn guys know each other so well that they all have nicknames for each other. Brawn is often called the 'big bear' i know waaay too much about that team...
oh and hey all.
I don't think Lola is anything but a political announcement. It is very convenient for Max to have new teams announcing an interest while the current team are threatening to leave. If any of these teams are for real why have they not entered? Why would Lola put out an announcement that they are going to enter rather than an announcement that they have entered.
For me USF1 is real and th rest are Memorex.
aaah. no good. with online dictionaries, these days are probably almost over-
Ugh. The portly blond fellow puts me in mind of the ghastly David van Day, who is the very personification of evil on this earth.
Who was it that suggested Mutemath as a good band? I still can't get Typical off as my currently playing song on Spotify :P
has anyone ever opened up firefox to type the address and had it come out backwards?
eg moc.ebutuoy.www
most odd,,,
evening :)
Surely if you are assulting the machine with a supermarket trolley you don't have to pay?
Ohhh my god. I can't believe it's taken me this long to realise there is a certain game with a certain name...!!!
*opens photoshop*
Eh?
For me USF1 is all marketing. Lola is political (although I do think they are capable of at least entering). Penske's name ALWAYS comes up when the subject of new teams arises and has done for 20 years - as do several teams from junior formulae who never get further than a press release.
oh that one. but who voted for it? (to win the national final)
entries aren't open until next week.
ha!!
but i do agree. the f3 is utter rubbish, and lola's not going to happen.
i'm telling ya. we should produce a press release saying we're collectively entering a team. panda power n'all. if we get it out before the meeting plenty of people will publish it.
I deny anything
I'm willing to contribute, but we need someone with a valid superlicense to go on the paperwork don't we?
burger van day.
I think that the UK public are actually quite discerning on these things - they always go for the most 'novelty' of the options and hence the least likely (thank god) to actually win and have us subjected to having to 'take it seriously'.
Plus the performance that went with that song had distinctly adult overtones - it was very 'Robin Askwich (?sp) in confessions of...' even in the version 'done' on Blue Peter (in which we saw a side of that male presenter not seen on TV before, and Zoe Salmond was just ...erk!)
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/drmario-jpg
hehehe
This has to be heard to be believed.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8H8HnaTIcmk
no-one check press releases any more. copy and paste reigns supreme.
Go to Brighton, and there he is in his van outside the shopping centre....
All the way through the last ten years whenever the subject came up I repeated the same names from junior series who were the most likely to take a shot under their own name. Arden with Christian Horner, and Trevor Carlin.
Red Bull saw sense and hired Horner (or was it still Jag?). Carlin went to Jordan/Midland/whatever and got burned so won't be back.
:D
DrMario - great
OI
one day we will.
Is this going to interfere with the space program we are planning?
True. So let's put out a press release. and by "let's" I mean you :)
You don't need to announce drivers yet
different arms of the same company i think :)
ahh. we have limited resources.
That's got to be worth a roflcopter in anyone's book...
I'm tempted to reinstall netKar namie and Photoshop and do up some liveries in the F3000. I have no idea how to do it for rFactor.
pah!
I had a feeling two years ago i did read the paperwork for the team application (slow day) and i thought they needed names and license numbers.
Set it on fire. It's what he deserves. He is evil itself.
pah yes or pah no. I'll write it if you want.
I run a racing team, I'm good at these press release malarky.
Brilliant! I was hooked on the original Game Boy version. I'm sure it was the music.
you can do, i'm not here i'm working.
It'll have an apple shop in a month or two...
Beach will still be pebbly though ...
We should announce a young driver program at the same time and a competition with the aim of getting someone who has never raced before into F1 in 5 years.
People will buy it. Start a fan club and sell memberships.
the teams from tonights ESC final (10 from the 19)
Azerbajan
Croatia
Ukraine (with hamster wheels)
Lithuania
Albania
Moldova
Denmark
Greece
Norway
Estonia
I'm going offline. see you tomorrow :)
Can I drive? :D
when is it due? i'm working too - but seem to be distracted by ESC today...
erk!
We are only allowed to use the wind tunnel for part of the time for F1 so we can run parallel programs there. There are material and design similarities too. Synergy F1 and aerospace
Night Scott. Nice live commenting the semi's with ya.
Though how Serbia didn't get in is a daylight robbery
Comments caught up with. Next up: Twitter.
Bye Scott.
bye Scott
and Ireland! Night too. It's not often we're around at the same time anymore (well non race days)
all i need is a date for when the press release is due. we can spin it like that british? football team where the punters all put in 10 quid
It seems that most of our commenters are not here
needs to be out before max's meeting tomorrow.
hence why lola are announcing now.
well i'm not. truly i am going. maybe we could do the press release as a wiki? really really leaving...
tis true.
spotquiz then - do i have time before the meeting tomorrow. aah no. thought i had 48 hours. sorry. someone else will have to write it! good publicity for the SPC empire. night all..
see ya scott.
Hmmm
Sidepodcast Racers F1 Team Press Release
We are in.
i shouldn't be here, i should be revising, but after all day i need an hours break to try help me feel better about it before i try again...
I'm here.
That's dangerous.. I did that last night.
Have you guys seen this?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5gdy-6Y6RY
I'd like to state again for the record that I am most definitely here.
hi!
how did your print thing go?
i've been revising all day, and have got myself into a bit of a state about the exams tomorrow, i just need to calm down a bit and do something that keeps my mind off of it for 20mins.
Awesome! :D
Tonight I filed what would have been the last chapter of MBW. But now another has been requested!
In the meantime, I'm downloading the OSX version of the open-source UFO: Alien Invasion (an update of the PC classic UFO: Enemy Unknown). This could be a big mistake, given how much of 1994/95 I spent playing it...
It didn't, in the sense that the lecturer is snowed under so I didn't need to print after all. :-) He'd prefer us to get it finished in full rather than do a draft and ask for feedback.. Then he'll check it with the aim of making minor changes, if any... So that'll be a week's extension then.
Revising what? You probably said on Twitter but I haven't got that far yet.
psychology and ict. :(
I hate when I think I have finished something only to find that there is more that has to be done.
donuts... classic!
Ah. Sounds wordy.
yep. :( wordy and full of detail.
This is semi-correct. To receive a live TV signal of any kind when in the UK requires a TV licence (note spelling).
The law says that you need a licence for any device that is "installed or used" for "receiving a television programme at the same time (or virtually the same time) as it is received by members of the public".
TV Licensing say that you need a TV Licence to use any television receiving equipment for watching and/or recording and they include PCs in their list. This is misleading.
Watching time shifted recordings does not require a licence. It is perfectly legal to own a TV provided you do not use it to watch live broadcasts. It is also perfectly legal for a person with a TV licence to record a programme and pass it to a friend without a TV licence to watch at a later time.
So iPlayer does not require a licence - you are watching a time shifted programme.
Live streams do require a licence, but only if you are in the UK when watching them. If you are outside the UK, no licence is required (plus it's not enforceable). This is one reason why the TV streams are geo-locked.
what about the live stuff on iplayer?
No no no no no... no more revision now. If you haven't got it sorted then you will just overload poor brain.
Ditto to hiding all but the briefest notes until after exams of tomorrow now!! Have a nice milky drink and *go to sleep*
/mummyhead
Astro_Mike has a quarter of a million followers. (Ta to Chris for retweeting one of Mike's tweets from space, reminded me to follow him)
i really can't go to sleep now. i'm just way to nervous and worrying. i just keep thinking i don't know enough. i think it's cause i desperately want to pass psychology well....
The commander of the next shuttle mission has a twitter account where he discusses all his training http://twitter.com/Astro_127
Right, I'm going to bed now. Please check out my blog as there is a new post there, not plugging, but i am, so see ya tomorrow.
Thanks!
You know enough to succeed. You cannot learn any more now because your nerves will stop you remembering. Even if you can't sleep go to bed soon and just lie there. It actually does you a lot of good just to relax your body even if your brain is still active. You will pass. It is just like hosting the podpanel. It seems huge before but afterwards you will realise it was not as bad as you thought. When you are nervous problems seem a lot bigger than they really are.
Night RG
rubber mallett?
You will be fine. Take a deep breath, eat a lettuce sandwich, and find a darkened room or a good (not pyschology!) book (preferably light and fluffy) or a carp magazine (cosmo or similar good for this!) to read....
/calming voice.
Seriously though - nothing wrong with resits, or just doing a whole different lot a second time round. You'll do better if you relax as well!
I still want to know where the FIA got findings from the fans about wanting such a system. {Comment #268}
The infamous "Man Down The Pub" - who is probably a football fan (and only football, therefore making the sort of suggestions that make people watch football instead of F1).
You want her to read about fish?

Sorry - force of habit from certain places that won't let use of the slightly different arrangement of those letters through...
Oooooh. yellowy.
OH MY GOD!!!! THEY"RE DOOMED!!!!
I thought I had answered that - Live = TV licence needed in UK.
yeah that's true. i think i'm mainly nervous because i have this ict exam before the psychology exam and have just an hour and 1/2 in between to calm down and get into psychology mode. and i'm in the exam room in the afternoon for almost 4 hours. it's just a horribly daunting day :(
A rubber Timmy Mallett? :|
Wowzers.
A Rubber Goat? :)
Night all! And good luck Lou! ;)
why a lettuce sandwich?
But thanks, i tend to worry a lot but exams are the worst...
night, and thanks :)
here's alternate way of looking at things... even if you pass everything with a* a+ whatever it is you get these days, employers will likely not give a damn about your results in 5 years time.
even if you fail everything, you'll still be the same person you are now, and the person that you are now is what will define how the rest of your live pans out. 4 hours really is nothing in the grand scheme of life.
results are overrated.
to employers yes... but universities?... not so much :( our school puts a hell of a lot of pressure on us too. fun times.
Chocolate helps.
Tictacs can be good too.
Small squishy pandas for the purposes of pockets also nice :-) Something to read that has absolutely nothing to do with the upcoming exam... or a podcast to listen to... or going for a run/icecream/poddle around a nice garden if you prefer. Getting out of the exam area is basically good!
4 hours in an exam room is bleurgh. But this is likely to be the only time of your life when you have to be in one for that long. IME uni exams are a breeze compared to A levels :-) (and a lot of professors will tell you likewise :-D assuming that you aren't taking something scary like medicine or (uber scary length exams) vetinary science....)
Do not do more than a modicum of caffine though....
Its high in various natural substances that promote sleep :-)
Night Gavin
but not for your sake. they do that for their sakes to maintain whatever position in whatever league they are placed.
screw your school. you only have to look out yourself.
You can in the morning... I did today. Worked a treat.
Universities only use them as a shifting mechanism. And if they actually *want* you post interview the offers that you get bear little or no resemblence to what you are capable of getting or what the virgin guide says that the average points offer is anyway.
As for the school - well, they have to prove to your parents or whoever the investor is, that they have delivered their end of the contract. Unfortunately schools forget that delivery of said contract is about the pupil getting the best education *for the pupil* not ness. about the actual marks on paper at the end of it!
Although 1 x cup of tea at home followed by drinking the large can of Monster on the drive in, did leave me buzzing a bit too much...
i have a worrying obsession for polos when i'm nervous...
i'm either thinking of doing psychology, or photography at uni, couldn't stand medicine, i'm a little too squeamish for that lol.
True. Employers care more about what qualities you can bring to a job and what skills and experience you have rather than your qualifications. In some ways, they don't really matter at all. I should know - I only have GCSEs, yet I still got my new job down to what I could bring to the company and my past experience. It took a while, yes, but at least I got somewhere in the end.
i have an exam in the morning too :( and then two in the afternoon.
I meant *sifting* mechanism.... sorry, you are not flour....
have you seen any polos with no holes again? :p
All this Stereophonics talk has left me with a hole to fill. Time to play Performance and Cocktails in full again. I used to do that a lot after it came out and haven't done for AGES.
Results may be overrated but that's no excuse to go balls out and whizz through it. I'm assuming you've done past papers and have some idea how long it should take, so pace yourself to that. Everyone has lots of one-liner bits of advice and the best I ever heard was this:
The examiner wants you to pass.
hehe sadly not. lol
Quite. Employers are very cynical about results these days. They're far more likely to give you a job after having tested your aptitude (ie milked as much free labour as possible in the name of work experience). Anyway, it's better to be nervous than have a false air of confidence...
Just one small and crudely knitted square in life's rich tapestry...
Have a look at the A levels that peeps going onto Psy degrees actually have - you'll find that most are science/maths/humanities rather than psyc itself. *Any* study of psyc prior to uni for that subject is useful (it shows the uni that you have a working interest) but the actual grade obtained is not going to have a huge bearing if they deem you a person of interest to them :-)
Its one of the times when doing interviews on the basis of predicted grades can be useful; but also where applying once you know what you have got is also useful. Before you are reliant on your teachers predicting you a grade that they think the uni will want to see (very subjective, even if the school has good knowledge of the inner workings of the admissions tutors mind!); Afterward you are going in with the advantage of your exams being a 'known quantity' but will also be looked at as a more rounded person, with the other things you have done in your life coming to the fore wrt the admissions peeps.
For photography... well you'll be looking for a foundation course first anyway won't you?
maybe crocheted?
I'm off to bed in a minute, so one last word on the subject: my mock A-level results were so iffy that I only got one university offer. The actual results were much better, and a few other offers came out of the woodwork, but I decided to stick with the place that originally gave me the offer, even though I'd never even visited the place. On the first night I got talking to the fellow who lived two doors down. He was also a big F1 fan; his name was Matt Bishop. And the rest is history...
most likely.
Thanks everyone for your help and advice. i'm really dreading tomorrow and you've all helped to calm me down a bit. I think i'll take your advice and try and get some sleep somehow. i'll go listen to some sigur ros or something for a bit i think and try get some sleep before midnight.
speak to you all tomorrow! night xx
Definately. This was the biggest advantage of doing a second lot of A levels!! I knew what to expect and my exam skills were already 'practised' in the 'real world'. Knowing how long something *could* take focussed the mind beautifully (*could* take, not *should* take definately different... if you have 4 questions to do in an hour, then you are looking at 5 mins a q to plan, then 10 mins a q to write the answer, assuming that all have equal marks available... you'll have all this info from doing past papers :-) )
Oh erk, I can't half ramble... no planning rofl
that may well be the best last word on any subject, ever.
oooh, this is an interesting conversation, but from what i can pick up from it is this;
do your best, thats all anyones asking, your parents and teachers might be putting all this pressure on you, but really, if you go in their and do your best, they'll be proud of you, we'll be proud of you. it's too late to be worrying about what you have or havent revised. just go in there and be lou, and you'll come out lou and on 20th August when you pick up those little bits of paper, you'll still be lou. they might shape what you do, but you shape who you are :)
goodnight, best of luck!! you will be fine, justtry and relax :)
night lou, sleep well.
wow :) thats pretty darn cool
Good luck!
seconded.
and thirded for that matter.
I can never plan it like that. I know I can do it in 2.5 hrs. There are 3.5 hrs available. So instead of rushing to do 2.5hrs, take a breath to consider..
wow, i sound like i know what im talking about
almost ;)
Good luck Lou
Good luck Lou and good night all...
Goood night!
night stuart.
I'm off too, night.
night scott!
Why??? Just Why??? What an awesome site that was - and it never harmed anybody! {Comment #343}
Some people just like blowing stuff up :(
The Wayback Machine has a backup from 19 January 2008. I doubt whether it's a full backup (and the downloads the site was most reputed for will not be there) but at least it would give them a basis to restart.
night everyone who is going
ditto
see ya scott.
My comment about Avsim got moderated.
Mr C you getting this down? Lou's gone, Stuarts Left, Scott's gone too.

It was the most useful thing that I learnt on the journalism course :-) Especially important when you are making pieces for broadcast rofl...
what most people don't realise, is that the skill can be transferred right across everything, not just applied to having 20 mins to record/edit/make a 45 sec. or 3 min or however long short...
It makes you really good at chairing meetings as well :-) Learning to shut up and move on a politician (or indeed teaching one of them how to only make the points that they want to, not answer the question asked rofl) so that you end the interview to hit the news/leave enough time for a 3'15" track before the nextthing/news/adbreak is a fantastically useful skill for controlling the verbosities of the voluntary (or not so voluntary but equally political project meeting) sector. And best of all is knowing that you've let everyone have their say, without any of them realising that they've been controlled for time....
just about. it's a lot of responsibility though. what if i miss one?
:-D
Got a pencil, or are you using the doohickey ticky?
bounced from moderation:
dont worry, someone else will be doing it too, just in case.
they'll be a test of who went and when tomorrow, and it will count towards your final SPC grade ;)
then we're all in trouble.
*cue eastenders music*
It's similar to the buses anallergy (is that how you spell it? lol) - you expect one to go and 3 all go at the same time :D
Right, now I'm REALLY going. Night.
Now see here: Litespeed F3 have announced they’re going to lodge an F1 entry – with Mike Gascoyne in charge! {Comment #408}
I take it Ferrari didn't manage to get him after all then?
I've never heard of Litespeed before. Suddenly I am worried that they've been watching Brawn too closely and think one star can conquer F1 without resources and experienced assistance.
But we won't actually care what grade you get overall, cos you will still be you :-)
(Any sign of those discs yet? I've found a drive to read them with... although its currently in a studio in Bristol....)
They're a F3 team, they race in the National class with a car they designed....they usually come plum last
darn, i've been quoted myself at me. today is a bad day
rearrange the words to form a sentance
blimey no! it's on my list, i promise, but i have some much to do first.
:D
But its such a fantastic quote :-)
I've squirrelled it away to use elsewhere in future... (although obviously with a change of name in the relevent slot :-D )
Lol
Sorry.. I couldn't resist...
Mind you - I couldn't resist this either... apparently its not much work to make them pandas ...

Underperforming F3 self-builders. {Comment #415}
I suppose they're self-builders and therefore "genuine constructors"... ...but the "underperforming" bit isn't very F1, is it?
haha, aslong as the royalties are in teh post, you may ;) hehe
i do have some moments of genius at certain points, its just a shame the rest of the time you cant tell which end im talking out of :D
I suppose if we're going back to the old days of bargain basement privateers building their own cars, it is very F1...
I have a bike make by Litespeed. Different company I suspect
madness :)
It has 'super aguri style' written all over it
It could be worse - you could be planning to become a politician.....
There is an old saying in motoracing that if you can't raise enough sponsorship to do F3 try asking for 10 times as much and do F2. it looks lik they have decided that if they can't hack it in F3 they are as well failing in F1. Of course once Mike Gascoyne is involved the situation is different.
ah..well...
did i not say that my real name is Boris?
arent they [Litespeed] a new team to F3 this year?
surely they wont get it {Comment #417}
I think they might, since there are going to be thirteen slots, Toyota will almost certainly not be on the grid in 2010 whatever happens with regard to budget caps and that there are therefore at least four team vacancies (I'm trying to be optimistic towards F1 here)...
Whether they will be another Lola is a question I can't answer.
They won't get they entry because they won't enter. It's a publicity stunt.
i have a feeling, that with certain teams leaving and new ones coming in, even if there isnt a two-tear formula,we'll still get one whilst the new teams catch up for a couple of seasons
is it wrong that I want the F1 credit card? I feel like I’m falling for a Bernie money making scam. But my current one doesn’t have a car on it {Comment #424}
My bank sent me a letter last week apologising for attempting to close my credit card account. My crime? I hadn't used it in nearly a year because they never got round to sending me a PIN number...
Ock! He's probably not a good example of a politician... not slimey enough (and not prone to political speak rofl).
Now if you start sounding like Lorna Storey (you think she is bad now you should have heard her attempts to spin as an NUS politician rofl) or find you can perfect the whole Jack Straw thing then we'll start to worry...
I must say though, it is fun having all these chancers come out of the woodwork again. It's like 1995.
i do love him though, not sure why.
i'm quite interested in political campaigns though, would be my dream to work on a US presidential campaign, even if i was just the coffee boy ;)
You could practise on an FIA presidential campaign
the problem with visual last.fm, is i now have to look at pictures of jim steinman as well as listen to him. {Comment #444}
It is true that he is not going to win any beauty contests, however great a songwriter he is. Still, putting last.fm in another tab usually fixes that problem to my satisfaction.
yeah, but thats about as much a fore gone conclusion as Obama winning the next election.
I went to a shop called Head this afternoon (looks like the replacement for Zavvi, previously known as Virgin Music). Bought two Doctor Who DVDs for less than £8 total. Should have known there'd be a catch - one of them still has the little red double-magnet box that stops the container from being opened. Grrr!
Jim Steinman? That's a bit 80x isn't it?
How annoying!!
Where they the modern series Dr Who?!
and about as certain as Labour loosing the next election
*80s*
PAH! the old school ones are where its at
You can just pull those out.
Can't beat Tom Baker
I asked because £8 is immensely cheap for the new series', which go for £40 or more or so ive seen...
Just please please promise me you won't go to uni and join NOLS!!
Peter Davison is the ultimate Doctor Who - the question marks on the lapels...
NOLS?
For followers of the lower formulae, British F3 team boss Joe Tandy has passed away at the age of 26. {Comment #454}
This is a great pity for F3. Besides, 26 is too young to die :(
Although his Grandson doesn't apparently think so...
Heard that they have the Chaplin Box set in store for under £15. 8O
I paid over £100 a couple of years ago. :(
Sounds like a "special" store.
Also known as the 'Labour cabinet in training'... There isn't a labour MP under 40* who wasn't on the national cmt of Nols... and most of them have been NUS 'high ups' as well..
... and it shows.
*quite a lot of those over 40 are also ex NOLS/NUS
Jim Steinman? That’s a bit 80x isn’t it? {Comment #939}
Not really - the first songs of his to reach the charts were in the 1970s and some of the songs he wrote were in the charts as late as 2006. Jim himself, as far as I'm aware, has the grand total of one solo album though - released in 1981 but in many ways timeless (well, the music is - can't say the same for the video!).
Yep, that's the one I've got. Thats what I was thinking of. Lots of covers from it from memory
Not that special - Head brought all the remaining Zavvi stock from the administrators. I'm guessing they didn't pay that much for it.
* Now Amy's going to think I'm REALLY old *
Head are Zavvi under a differnt name - management bought a load of the store locations from the administrators and all the stock cheap - thus some real bargains.
Seen West Wing complete box set for £40, Laurel and Hardy box set for £30, Dad's Army set for £20, Friends box set for £40.... All absolute bargains!
How annoying!!
Where they the modern series Dr Who?! {Comment #940}
Yes. Series 2 Volume 5 (including the Battle of Torchwood two-parter) and Series 4 Volume 3 (including the Silence In The Library/Forest Of The Dead two-parter). It's the latter where the shop appears to have forgotten to remove the magnet unit.
Luckily I've got to go in the near vicinity of that shop next week anyway because my dad has asked me to get a Brawn cap and doesn't see the point of paying for delivery costs via the website.
Ah right, i wiki'd it. National Organisation of Labour Students.....
I guess that would be like jumping onto a sinking ship, whilst it was sinking, and strapped yourself to it. i'm looking forward to when the next election is called, reminds me of the Dido song, white flag....
"I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender"
Also gives me creepy images of Gordon Brown singing dido. bad times
I think you might have a future in BBC R4 comedy though, with statements like that...
You can just pull those out. {Comment #944}
Since it's not fit for use at the moment, I figure I might as well get someone at Head to remove it correctly next week - I've read that if I do it wrong, I could damage the disk with no comeback, but that the store should have the correct tool to do the job. If it says it doesn't, I'll ask them to refer me to the HMV five doors down from them - that should get customer services working properly!
:D
JTR to race on after Joe Tandy's passing away:
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/75307
i am glad :)
Good to see it survive in some form. I miss Fopp which got sucked into the HMV empire.
I asked because £8 is immensely cheap for the new series’, which go for £40 or more or so ive seen… {Comment #946}
Box sets are £40 or more, but I only wanted specific episodes anyway - even HMV has some of the older volumes of new series Doctor Who for £5. I got fed up of downloading them from the BBC each time they re-show them...
although i dont quite have the voice for it...
oh I don't want to have to work tomorrow
Yep, that’s the one I’ve got. Thats what I was thinking of. Lots of covers from it from memory {Comment #956}
Yes. Starting with the fact that Meat Loaf has covered all but three of the songs at some point in his career so far...
has this vid been mentioned yet?
via f1scoop on twitter.
Neither do most of them...
... and there are plenty who write and never appear 'on mic' :-)
this is true. i do write alot, all sorts, but could never do it as a job because i'd loose my passion of doing it ad hoc, every so often something half decent gets written and it'll get published if im lucky. once had a 4 page spread in radio race car international dont ya know, my pictures too....good times :)
:-D
link?
thats very cool
Haven't seen it before. It is complete bull though. No-one is going to put 28 bends on a sub 5km tracl
haha, in a magazine in a deep dark corner of my wardrobe. i'll dig it out tomorrow if i can work out what date it was.
track with a k
agreed. is there any call for a 2nd gp in italy anyhow?
Why have another GP in Italy if Ferrari aren't taking part. ;)
:)
Better than another one is a desert somewhere
They had two for years. Remember Imola. They have a load of good tracks they could use
:D
that is true. but would it be at the expense of monza? cause i say stick with monza.
Something to tempt them back?
now I've seen the track layout - 1 overtaking place maybe? It's another Monaco, except without the history.
valencia then.
Great! that worked well with Valencia ;-)
Surely a Fiorano GP would be more likely to do that? ;)
Cinqecento racing?
And I so can't spell this evening... (redface)
Looked good to me,as a non-Italian speaker
This is a laugh. I have to reduce 375 words down to 300 for a job application. I am taking out all the "thes" and "ands" and "Is". It's crazy.
I don't speak it either... well, except 'classical music' (which tends to be 15thC to 18thC and not much use for 'real life' rofl)
I'm just a pedant...
after a seearch on the website, it was in the April 2007 issue...i can find Jan, Feb, March and June 07 :( boo
Whats with all the little wierd hairpinny corners in the Rome GP circuit? Looks straaaaaange
There has to be a better way than removing all the punctuative words? Or are they actually asking for a bulleted list?
(is the word count specific, or could you claim the 10% 'rule' or just print it out in a smaller font? Or you could go on the 'tiny words don't count' factor ;-) )
I assume they are roundabouts
Yay! Done. Although it doesn't make much sense now.
Ah... that would make sense.
It's an online form which refuses any moer than 300 words, even though the question is longer than that!
Time for sleep. Night all.
Argh. blunt stick, pointy pointless thingy...
Thesaurus? Maybe some words that could become one word? Or is it actually on unit count (average to 300 words) rather than 300 spaces?
Strict 300 words. I had to get "creative". I guess I was being a bit verbose, but this is an application. Ah well, that's what they want.
Night
Sleepy time for me too i think, thanks for another great night of conversation :)
Night all
Bye all
Bye those who are leaving
I did an experiment on Twitter, it didn't go well. Worth trying though.
Good night all who are leaving
What did you do?
I follow different sorts of racing. I thought it would be interesting to see what would happen if I used it to keep people updated on race results for stuff they may only be casually interested in. So I tweeted the top few positions of some races. It's messy.
I think it's better to link to the results.
Isn't that what RSS is for?
Yes but RSS doesn't promote discussion.
Yep, good point.
Didn't want to be a link feed, too many of those already.
Was hoping it would spark up a convo about how well people are doing. Fans of racing seem to have some sort of residual awareness of what is going on in places they don't necessarily pay a lot of interest in. So the F1 fans following might get an idea who is doing well in GP2 if they don't watch the races or read the reports..
It turns out 140 chars isn't nearly enough. I'm thinking now of doing a blog series instead...
That's what I meant really - blog the results, add some personal analysis and then link on Twitter.
I may well try this tomorrow. Thanks.
The nerd in me wants to go back to January - but that's not gonna happen :-)
for me the issue is i'm really only interested in f1.
and i have to pretend to care what franck's up to.
I make it clear on my profile that I cover several series.. and I've long held an interest in trying to convert people to embracing more than one championship...
argh it's annoying when your wireless headphones run out of power JUST at the good bit of the song
absolutely.
and the best way to convert someone like me, is live video.
Anyway it could work if I copy my race preview posts and adjust them a bit. We shall see tomorrow. That may turn out to be pants as well in which case I'll drop it.
There may be trouble ahead.
You sounded very enthusiastic about Bathurst at the weekend
You want the moon on a stick.
yeah that's true. live video makes a huge difference.
always.
Especially if you have people in the comments who can answer your questions
I can easily watch a recording if I don't know, or can't remember, a result.
The catalyst for me was a decline in interest in F1 during the Ferrari/Schumi years. From what you're saying about the refuelling ban, next year you could be a lot more open to new stuff..
very well could be indeed.
night all.
Amy - wait several hours then go to sleep, don't want you asleep on the job do we? :D
although since the FIA seems hell bent on ruining every branch of the sport, perhaps not.
Night Andy. I'm going too.
Tomorrow (after work): advertise my old car and write blog posts
evening all.
Err Lou, I know your tired. But you've still got the wrong day ;)
no idea how that happened? i just opened the doohickey?...
Cinqecento racing?
And I so can’t spell this evening… (redface) {Comment #993}
I believe the correct spelling is "Cinquecento" (500 in Italian), if that's any help. I haven't taken any Italian classes either, but I see quite a few of that car whizzing up and down the local roads. In fact, I nearly got run over by one a couple of years ago, but that's another story...
