I was browsing the Wikipedia entry for May 14th for some kind of interesting fact, and found that Stirling Moss won the Monaco GP on this day in 1961. The people's encyclopedia also says that Moss removed the side panels of his Lotus to help keep him cool. Crikey! Anyway, on to more modern subjects:

  • BMW have said that whilst their KERS device is skipping a race at Monaco, they'll be bringing it back bigger and better for Turkey. The team really need something to work in their favour as the results haven't been coming in as they would have hoped yet.
  • Ferrari have said they could take their passion for Formula 1 and integrate it into a new motorsports category. What would that be, I wonder? Rallying? Touring Cars? NASCAR??
  • Lots of people have been having fun over on the Wiki recently. I recommend going over to check it out. We've got updated stats for the completed second series of Sidepodpanel. RG has created a list of the Sidepodcommunity Twitter accounts, and there's info about who is turning up to what motorsport events this year.

That'll do it for now. We're also keeping a close eye on the goings up in space, in our ongoing Sidepodspace feature. If you spot anything, let us know, and I'll see you in the comments.

There's also a pic of AVUS in 1959 and it looks very old even then.

It is only fibreglass that is missing. It did nothing but stop the occasional stone hitting the driver's leg

That was one of Hitler's little project. I don't imagine a penny was spent on the banking much after he was removed.

Your withdrawal plan may not be working but others are worse. Journeyer set his alarm for 3 am to take part in the Pitlane Fanatic quiz. What's worse is that he won it.

I've spent most of today reading all the comments trying to catch up with the SPC stuff I've missed. I would feel terrible if somehow John managed to pass me on the stages of addiction.

Oh hang on I did that last weekend. or was it the one before.

  • Vinnie14/05/2009 at 00:03

are you any wiser for your troubles though?

Well I'm on the list of twittering regulars...

And it's good to see that the space shuttle mission is going well. I actually embarrassed myself by reading the comment that the docking with the hubble was coming up and I got all excited, then I realized the comments were half a day old and I missed it.

  • Pat W14/05/2009 at 00:03

I don't like that there isn't enough time for me to work at my own pace.

  • Vinnie14/05/2009 at 00:04

I had errands and lunch guests, so I basically spent 3 hours reading the comments for yesterday.

  • Paul (oz)14/05/2009 at 00:05

Yes I am actually working too. Then I have to write an application for my job.

    There's too much distraction here.

It's the June issue. They have a 15 page section (the NASCAR one) that is fully sponsored by Performance Friction Brakes... and surprise surprise 4 pages of that section is on PFB's products for NASCAR.

sam from the mag is a pretty good chap, he's commented here in the past, it might be worth raising concerns with him (there's a contact form on the site). i'll take a look on saturday.

Well it's obvious that the PFB logo is in the corner of every page of that section and visible on most of the pictures in the brake article. But it's not actually explicitly stated, you have to put the two together.

  • me14/05/2009 at 01:34

  • Vinnie14/05/2009 at 01:37

The whole issue isn't a total waste though. There's some good stuff in there. Dave Williams (suspension expert) actually talks about the inerters that are in use in F1 right now. He talks about testing them for teams and actually says "He also notes that in some ways it is better than active suspension." and claims they are responsible for a number of the bigger accidents.

that's true, to a certain extent. but they are off their peak from a few years ago now - and they're starting to lose sponsors.

  • Steven Roy14/05/2009 at 01:54

Thanks. If my lecturer isn't impressed by the project I'll blame Steven Roy.

andrew benson responded to the mounting discontent that the bbc's "mole" doesn't do a lot of digging.

i have to say he does a terrible job with his defence, but i love this quote:

"The BBC is not trying to compete with the likes of autosport.com. We don't want to, and we're not allowed to..."

"...We are trying to provide something different, something distinctive."

cough, f1 big picture, cough. i'll leave a response shortly, although it'll probably be in moderation until the morning.

    Not the same apparently

Out of curiosity, why's the post on Reuters India?

it's probably syndicated to all of the world outlets, but reuters india were the first to "ping" their latest f1 stories to twitter, so i've just stuck with following them.

  • me14/05/2009 at 03:05

just reading gp+ before i sleep. there's a hell of a line on the final page from david tremayne:

"The real truth of the so-called 'Liegate' scandal is as ugly as betrayal itself and one day it will be possible to write the truth of it without fear of legal recrimination."

it's well worth a read, and while clearly not able to go into any further detail at the moment, it appears exonerate ron from any kind of wrongdoing in the affair.

  • Honky Tonk14/05/2009 at 03:07

    That's interesting.

  • Honky Tonk14/05/2009 at 03:08

But at the same time annoying that we don't know the 'real truth'

  • Vinnie14/05/2009 at 03:09

I feel like before we know the full truth of lie-gate, maybe we could learn the full truth of spy-gate first?

  • me14/05/2009 at 03:09

But at the same time annoying that we don't know the 'real truth'

true enough. it will out eventually though.

It's funny how the Brawn boys and RBR seem to not be involved in the BS politics.

They just 'get on with it'

  • Vinnie14/05/2009 at 03:21

It's funny how the Brawn boys and RBR seem to not be involved in the BS politics.

I thought RBR gave a press release saying they won't race next year under the cap?

  • Paul (oz)14/05/2009 at 03:22

It's funny how the Brawn boys and RBR seem to not be involved in the BS politics.

To be fair, they have only been "in it" this year. Even as Honda, they were so far behind nobody was interested.

Imagine in Australia if McLaren of Ferrari had been found to have flexi-wings instead on Toyota! It's all about how far up the pecking order the team is.

  • Honky Tonk14/05/2009 at 03:23

I thought RBR gave a press release saying they won't race next year under the cap?

That's fair enough though. I wouldn't race either.

  • Vinnie14/05/2009 at 03:27

What are the teams that have actually come out in favor of the cap as it stands?

  • Honky Tonk14/05/2009 at 03:30

I would argue that some authors have shown that you can release a book for free online and then people who like it will be willing to buy it. Download numbers could even be used to convince a publisher it's worth supporting you.

  • Journeyer14/05/2009 at 06:01

We've more or less assumed this one already, but nonetheless, JA tweets that...

I'm expecting BMW to follow Toyota, Ferrari and Renault in saying they will not enter F1 next year if rules stay as they are

This is the troubling bit, though:

hearing that some potential team sponsors, who came to Barcelona, are confused and troubled by teams saying they'll pull out

    Yikes.

  • Stuart C14/05/2009 at 06:18

  • Stuart C14/05/2009 at 06:20

hearing that some potential team sponsors, who came to Barcelona, are confused and troubled by teams saying they’ll pull out

Sounds about right. Teams are looking to woo their next year's sponsorship roster right about now, with a view to having everything in place by August/September.

Sounds about right. Teams are looking to woo their next year’s sponsorship roster right about now, with a view to having everything in place by August/September.

This SHOULD be done and dusted by the end of the month (since they'd need to be entered in the 2010 championship by then). If it isn't, it'll be total chaos.

You would never have thought that when I told Force Fans Online that the team was going to have a Twitter account, the reaction was along the lines of "So? I have a Twitter account - what's the significance of this"? Now Force India are leading the Web 2.0 battle between the teams. If only they could find a way of getting the Web 2.0 stuff to make their cars quicker, I would be a very happy supporter indeed. (Still happy with them though :) )

Thank you for the advice, Journeyer. Unfortunately I'm on my Dad's computer and I don't want to risk him complaining at me. Oh well, I'll check Twitter when I go back onto my own computer.

  • the Blue Orange Lion14/05/2009 at 10:15

I’m not sure we have. Is it any good?

Very good, in fact it features Jenson saying "C'mon, Rubens! You can go quicker than that!"

And the most important thing on Bernard's website today is US F1 team story where Peter Windsor and Ken Anderson do some PR about how the car's gonna run and about hiring Danica and basically doing a Brawn next year. The timimg is also right, with FOTA / FIA meeting scheduled to take place this week at least mad Max and Mr E will have something to advertise. Interesting. Italian press is now talking about Fiat (Ferrari), BMW, Mercedes, Renault & Toyota setting up their own series with 3 cars per team and with Valentino Rossi in 3rd Ferrari to create additional interest. I'm all for Loeb in the 3rd Renault!

  • Journeyer14/05/2009 at 10:17

    BIG news:

    Ecclestone joins FIA/FOTA meeting

Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone is to join a meeting between FIA president Max Mosley and teams in London tomorrow to discuss the row about a two-tier category next year.

Tomorrow will be huge. Absolutely HUGE.

I had a C++ assessment exam yesterday for 3 hours that went so and so. Had to create a menu that allowed a user to input new information, view all records and search for a certain key number should they choose. It kinda worked... a few bugs, but good enough for a pass in my opinion. or so I hope... :)

I have a C++ logbook to finish for next week of a load of tasks, most of them are done which is good so I've definitely progressed :) really dislike it still though!

  • Alianora La Canta14/05/2009 at 10:45

Luckily, it seems to be quite easy to sort out mangled passwords on Twitter. Some web services could learn a lot from it.

In light F1 news, someone at the techEDin conference has spotted a Force India car. I can't tell from the Twitter comment where I learned this what possible reason FIF1 could have for sending one (other than it's in Hyderabad), let alone what model was sent. All I can ascertain is that it's somewhere between wherever baxiabhiskek was for the last event of this morning's conference and the lunch hall.

The only downside with Codies is that they have been known to dumb down the realism (apparently, although IMO it's good enough) but they say they have changed that for this game. It certainly has promise!

They're definitely smart enough and experienced enough to know what the fans want from an F1 gamew so yep, it does have promise :)

I read the other night that whereas they're obviously going for allout simulation, theyre still going to accomodate for a more casual player with an arcade mode so everyone wins really.

Piero ferrari has an interesting take on the budget cap..

Ferrari stated: "It's like soccer. In Italy we have Internazionale, who are winning, and they spend huge amounts of money for the best players.

"But in Serie A you also have a team like Catania, who have no money.

"So do you say to Catania, 'You can play with 12 players' and to Inter, 'You must play with nine'? It wouldn't be fair.

"But this is what the new Formula 1 rules are like. They're not acceptable at all.

    Hehe. I like the comparison.

Two-tiered systems never work. Even in Sportscar racing, and a lot of people complained here that Sebring was a bit weird to watch with so many different types of car on track... so how are F1 fans gonna swallow two tiers?

"I must be clear that we, Ferrari and the others have no intention of breaking with FIA. We want to be there, to participate, to preserve the future," said Briatore.

"We are proposing logical conditions to [Max] Mosley [FIA president]. I want to make it clear that the teams are formula one, the international federation should simply be the referee. We should write the rules, not have them imposed by Max without speaking to anyone."

Renault are flogging off a load of old bits - stupidly expensive most of them.

    An exhaust from 2006 - €3500

    2005 Front wing flap - €2500

    2005 rear wing end plate - €1500

Although things start as low as €40 - for a titanium stud, a butterfly valve, a valve or a cam follower...

I have the opposite fear - what if I end up with a man who won't let me have my playroom? I keep accumulating framed F1 pics, and any future house of mine needs a home theatre room...

Although I only have a couple of framed F1 pics up as most of the pictures at the moment are my own photo's of aircraft *most commonly Vulcan and Lancaster*

Ferrari have said they could take their passion for Formula 1 and integrate it into a new motorsports category. What would that be, I wonder? Rallying? Touring Cars? NASCAR??

Easy - Le Mans. With Audi reducing involvement, Ferrari coming in would rejuvenate the currently struggling series.

Back in the 1950s, Le Mans was every bit as pretigious as F1. With Ferrari and some proper organization, I don't see why it can't become that again. :)

In terms of graphics, no. But in terms of gameplay, probably. I think scenarios are included there as well - similar to F1 2005 (the version before F1 2006 on the PSP).

Well it hasn't been that way since 1990 and you can thank Bernie and Max for that - effectively neutering the sport because it threatend F1. Since Group C Le Mans has had good years, but has not been the same. The ALMS came close, but that has died off a bit too now...

Let me tell you now - Ferrari coming in would change that instantly. They obviously wouldn't challenge F1 right away - that will take a lot of work. But the number of TV viewers they will take with them will be very big, to say the least.

I think for a casual viewer, the one hard thing about watching racing though is it's not a consistent schedule. Having to actually look up when the races are makes it less easy for the casual observer to get hooked. And for LeMans series it's even worse because they race less often than even F1 do.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)14/05/2009 at 14:04

Ferrari last entered in Le Mans in the Mid-90's WSC days with the 333SP. IIRC that didn't add as much interest in the UK as McLaren entering their F1 roadcar. You are right, but I don't think all the F1 fans will suddenly watch Le Mans because Sportscar racing is different to F1...

this is what we wrote about mclaren's diamonds in 2008:

"Oh yeah, they’re pulling that old trick again. You know, two drivers, two helmets, one Monaco, add some shiny rocks… that’s bound to create some headlines."

i'll forward to the fifth driver.

Depends... Unfortunately it's not only up to me. Thing is with Danish trains, they're quite good normally with timings, but when they get it wrong it's disasterous.

Maybe DSB is the Ferrari of train services :(

Gold's ryder cup in 2010 is going to be comical; just saw on the local news that the redevelopment of newport city centre has been delayed again; just to give you a general idea, the redevelopment was agreed in 2007, and work on that was supposed to start march 2008 ready for the Ryder cup.

I started my job in january 2008 in the middle of our city centre expecting to be there not for long because of this... it's now may 2009, and our shop now has a closure time of 'Late 2010', so the redevelopment plan that was supposed to be for rhe Ryder cup won't even start until after it, let alone be done. It's the same old thing here tbh, I know the credit crunch didnt hep but we know have half a centre centre completely empty because shops moved out in preparation, albeit now for no reason it seems :/

  • Lukeh14/05/2009 at 17:51

    *half a city centre, even

Will it affect the Ryder Cup or just the tourism of it?

  • Amy14/05/2009 at 17:54

Sorry it's a bit off topic, just a bit of a rant i suppose

my home city decided to build a new stadium for the 2010 rugby world cup back in 05 or 06. They're still arguing over who should pay for it. It takes more than a year to build a stadium so the world cup will be long gone and they'll still be fighting.

It'll affect the tourism no doubt, we have a high street but our main shopping centre honestly had about 5 shops because it's so empty thanks to the redevelopment. Where I work was part of half the city centre to be knocked down because the general area is very ugly and grey and just not with the times, and rebuilt with new shopping centres, allsorts being brought up to the 21st century and show off the city as a nice place

all we have at the moment is half a bus station, a lot of cranes building a car park that is not completely pointless if there's no new shopping centre, and a lot of construction that isn't going to be used for another year at least. very very silly. The actual Celtic Manor Hotel where the ryder cup is being held iscompletely other side of the city (I can see it from my house :D) so they can hide the ugly city centre, but it still is a really poor effort for us as local people, and im sure it wont leave a nice taste on people coming in for the golf

i'm sorry, could you be any more gmm? that wasn't quite sensationalist enough for us ;)

I object. I quoted a source. The story sounds like bull to me too. I didn't even know he had set up a company.

All my Red Bulletin talk has sent me back to my archives. i started at issue 1, as you do, and whats the first thing i see? Diamonds in Kimis helmet at Monaco 2005. Sigh.

  • Vinnie14/05/2009 at 18:15

He is obviously looking for work and since everything he did in motor racing is someone else's IP he can't fill the site with that. So he filled it with his pub and boat and put a comment on the bottom that he was looking for work. Maybe Ollie needs to have a word with him on website design.

  • littlepurplegoth14/05/2009 at 18:17

depends what you buy, i buy a lot and its not bad, but I’m trying to buy about 20 magazines and they’re heavy

Are these back issues, or currently available ones? Anything anyone here could find for you?

I send stuff overseas a lot, and royal mail is quite reasonable to the commonwealth.... if over a couple of Kgs then surface is sensible, but its not actually that slow (quotes 56 days, but often its a lot less than that - 35 is possible surface to aus. from here). http://sg.royalmail.com/portal/rm/PriceFinderResults?pageId=pc_sltc_rm_results&keyname=rmPriceFinderResults&catId=23500532 should give you a rough idea of costs though.

back issues back to 1998, and they were only ever sent to Team McLaren members so they're rather hard to track down :( someone on ebay is selling 47 of them which would be a nice chunk of what I need, but his reserve is stupidly high

  • Steven Roy14/05/2009 at 18:19

  • Amy14/05/2009 at 18:21

they apparently don't have an archive back that far that they can provide to members, and they want the cover price of 4.50 each, they go for cheaper on ebay.

DHL is an expensive way of shipping them though... especially overseas (erk!) unless he has already bought a slot for the UK through parcel2go (which is likely given his quoted 48 hour price which just happens to match up with the parcel2go 48 hour within UK price lol)

Will go and have a look around for you :-)

he doesn't even offer overseas shipping, i don't understand that with sellers, surely if someone overseas is willing to pay for the whole cost its no different to posting it down the road. I am still winning the other 13 I am bidding on though, so it might be time to head to bed. Thanks for your help! :)

You can purchase a UK IP address from a proxy company, the problem is to stream live stuff off of the BBC site, you also need a TV License.

If you don't want to pay for it, you can try figuring out the horrors of setting it up through Tor. It's a lot more work... but it does work. Just set yourself up to use Tor, and then change the Tor settings to only us UK based proxies.

the fact its delayed on tv is rubbish though, I want to watch it live! so i might be up all night more than once this week :D Don't get me started on the Brownlow, for some reason I watched it last year and couldn't understand why it went ALL NIGHT.

Evening all :) Missed anything big?

  • Lukeh14/05/2009 at 19:03

I watched a show tonight where they had all the times the vote people screwed up. Good fun.

I love it when the voting sequences between the hosts and the countries they go to are always mega awkward. Good times.

  • Amy14/05/2009 at 19:03

ok now i ACTUALLY am going to sleep. yes. right now. ill be back in 4 hours when I get to work ;)

  • Steven Roy14/05/2009 at 19:03

i want to do that zero-g plane thing like coulthard did.

I just want to go to space. a plane isn’t good enough for me anymore;)

So we need sidepodspace to go a stage further than just talking about it. How hard can it be for us to start our own space program?

You can't sleep while I am trying to start our own space program. We have space craft to design and a few quid to find to finance it.

have stopped presentation now. some bits are still flaky, but it's only a beta.

might able to do some interesting things with it, like live comment on an f1 documentary or old races, if we can ensure everyone is watching it in sync.

early days though. appreciate everyone popping over.

Australian Eurovision experts say ’skip the TV broadcast, watch it on the internet live’ because delayed isn’t the same, and the Australian hosts are very annoying I’m hoping for sidepodcast live commenting, I know you’ll all be watching

I just bought wine, crisps and a dip especially. If I'm going to sit through that I'm going to make myself enjoy it. I remember live commenting it on F1NGers 2 or 3 years ago with the aid of alcohol and snacks (in moderation kids), although we didn't have proper live commenting tools, just a newsgroup..

It’s not fair really. I used to really like them, and still do love their older stuff such as that, but in more recent years Kelly Jones and their musical direction have turned into a world of a prententious garbage.

Buh *ahem* just my brief opinion.

No, that's correct. They lost it when Kelly broke the guitar that gave them their unique sound, and then they fired what's his name with Brian May's hair.

  • Steven Roy14/05/2009 at 19:59

  • Stuart C14/05/2009 at 20:42

Actually the best one I heard was a guy that put an expense report for a 67 cent clip!

A long time ago a photographer I worked with included on his invoice a very detailed breakdown of expenses he'd incurred on a shoot, including a frappuccino and a cinnamon whirl at the airport. I couldn't help but disseminate this information in the ALMS paddock, and to this day he is known as "Frappuccino Regis".

It was long-established practice for some F1 hacks (not me!) to claim for meals out where the costs had actually been shared by all concerned. Someone would pocket the receipt and dutifully provide a photocopy for all.

I’m now maintaining the 3 main entries to be USF1, Lola and Penske.

They do seem to be the most credible...

The trouble with the vending machines in Japanese hotel lobbies is that they don't dish out receipts. And last year I realised – too late – that the yen had stiffened rather a lot against the pound relative to when I was last in Japan.

I don't think Lola is anything but a political announcement. It is very convenient for Max to have new teams announcing an interest while the current team are threatening to leave. If any of these teams are for real why have they not entered? Why would Lola put out an announcement that they are going to enter rather than an announcement that they have entered.

For me USF1 is real and th rest are Memorex.

For me USF1 is all marketing. Lola is political (although I do think they are capable of at least entering). Penske's name ALWAYS comes up when the subject of new teams arises and has done for 20 years - as do several teams from junior formulae who never get further than a press release.

I think that the UK public are actually quite discerning on these things - they always go for the most 'novelty' of the options and hence the least likely (thank god) to actually win and have us subjected to having to 'take it seriously'.

Plus the performance that went with that song had distinctly adult overtones - it was very 'Robin Askwich (?sp) in confessions of...' even in the version 'done' on Blue Peter (in which we saw a side of that male presenter not seen on TV before, and Zoe Salmond was just ...erk!)

All the way through the last ten years whenever the subject came up I repeated the same names from junior series who were the most likely to take a shot under their own name. Arden with Christian Horner, and Trevor Carlin.

Red Bull saw sense and hired Horner (or was it still Jag?). Carlin went to Jordan/Midland/whatever and got burned so won't be back.

Tonight I filed what would have been the last chapter of MBW. But now another has been requested!

In the meantime, I'm downloading the OSX version of the open-source UFO: Alien Invasion (an update of the PC classic UFO: Enemy Unknown). This could be a big mistake, given how much of 1994/95 I spent playing it...

  • Pat W14/05/2009 at 21:14

how did your print thing go?

It didn't, in the sense that the lecturer is snowed under so I didn't need to print after all. :-) He'd prefer us to get it finished in full rather than do a draft and ask for feedback.. Then he'll check it with the aim of making minor changes, if any... So that'll be a week's extension then.

You can purchase a UK IP address from a proxy company, the problem is to stream live stuff off of the BBC site, you also need a TV License.

This is semi-correct. To receive a live TV signal of any kind when in the UK requires a TV licence (note spelling).

The law says that you need a licence for any device that is "installed or used" for "receiving a television programme at the same time (or virtually the same time) as it is received by members of the public".

TV Licensing say that you need a TV Licence to use any television receiving equipment for watching and/or recording and they include PCs in their list. This is misleading.

Watching time shifted recordings does not require a licence. It is perfectly legal to own a TV provided you do not use it to watch live broadcasts. It is also perfectly legal for a person with a TV licence to record a programme and pass it to a friend without a TV licence to watch at a later time.

So iPlayer does not require a licence - you are watching a time shifted programme.

Live streams do require a licence, but only if you are in the UK when watching them. If you are outside the UK, no licence is required (plus it's not enforceable). This is one reason why the TV streams are geo-locked.

  • me14/05/2009 at 21:21

So iPlayer does not require a licence - you are watching a time shifted programme.

what about the live stuff on iplayer?

You know enough to succeed. You cannot learn any more now because your nerves will stop you remembering. Even if you can't sleep go to bed soon and just lie there. It actually does you a lot of good just to relax your body even if your brain is still active. You will pass. It is just like hosting the podpanel. It seems huge before but afterwards you will realise it was not as bad as you thought. When you are nervous problems seem a lot bigger than they really are.

You will be fine. Take a deep breath, eat a lettuce sandwich, and find a darkened room or a good (not pyschology!) book (preferably light and fluffy) or a carp magazine (cosmo or similar good for this!) to read....

    /calming voice.

Seriously though - nothing wrong with resits, or just doing a whole different lot a second time round. You'll do better if you relax as well!

here's alternate way of looking at things... even if you pass everything with a* a+ whatever it is you get these days, employers will likely not give a damn about your results in 5 years time.

even if you fail everything, you'll still be the same person you are now, and the person that you are now is what will define how the rest of your live pans out. 4 hours really is nothing in the grand scheme of life.

    results are overrated.

  • lou14/05/2009 at 21:42

    results are overrated.

to employers yes... but universities?... not so much :( our school puts a hell of a lot of pressure on us too. fun times.

  • littlepurplegoth14/05/2009 at 21:42

    Chocolate helps.

    Tictacs can be good too.

Small squishy pandas for the purposes of pockets also nice :-) Something to read that has absolutely nothing to do with the upcoming exam... or a podcast to listen to... or going for a run/icecream/poddle around a nice garden if you prefer. Getting out of the exam area is basically good!

4 hours in an exam room is bleurgh. But this is likely to be the only time of your life when you have to be in one for that long. IME uni exams are a breeze compared to A levels :-) (and a lot of professors will tell you likewise :-D assuming that you aren't taking something scary like medicine or (uber scary length exams) vetinary science....)

Do not do more than a modicum of caffine though....

  • littlepurplegoth14/05/2009 at 21:45

to employers yes... but universities?... not so much :( our school puts a hell of a lot of pressure on us too. fun times.

Universities only use them as a shifting mechanism. And if they actually *want* you post interview the offers that you get bear little or no resemblence to what you are capable of getting or what the virgin guide says that the average points offer is anyway.

As for the school - well, they have to prove to your parents or whoever the investor is, that they have delivered their end of the contract. Unfortunately schools forget that delivery of said contract is about the pupil getting the best education *for the pupil* not ness. about the actual marks on paper at the end of it!

  • Scott Woodwiss14/05/2009 at 21:47

    results are overrated.

True. Employers care more about what qualities you can bring to a job and what skills and experience you have rather than your qualifications. In some ways, they don't really matter at all. I should know - I only have GCSEs, yet I still got my new job down to what I could bring to the company and my past experience. It took a while, yes, but at least I got somewhere in the end.

  • Pat W14/05/2009 at 21:50

Results may be overrated but that's no excuse to go balls out and whizz through it. I'm assuming you've done past papers and have some idea how long it should take, so pace yourself to that. Everyone has lots of one-liner bits of advice and the best I ever heard was this:

The examiner wants you to pass.

  • lou14/05/2009 at 21:50

have you seen any polos with no holes again? :p

    hehe sadly not. lol

  • Stuart C14/05/2009 at 21:50

    results are overrated.

Quite. Employers are very cynical about results these days. They're far more likely to give you a job after having tested your aptitude (ie milked as much free labour as possible in the name of work experience). Anyway, it's better to be nervous than have a false air of confidence...

4 hours really is nothing in the grand scheme of life.

Just one small and crudely knitted square in life's rich tapestry...

  • littlepurplegoth14/05/2009 at 21:55

i'm either thinking of doing psychology, or photography at uni, couldn't stand medicine, i'm a little too squeamish for that lol.

Have a look at the A levels that peeps going onto Psy degrees actually have - you'll find that most are science/maths/humanities rather than psyc itself. *Any* study of psyc prior to uni for that subject is useful (it shows the uni that you have a working interest) but the actual grade obtained is not going to have a huge bearing if they deem you a person of interest to them :-)

Its one of the times when doing interviews on the basis of predicted grades can be useful; but also where applying once you know what you have got is also useful. Before you are reliant on your teachers predicting you a grade that they think the uni will want to see (very subjective, even if the school has good knowledge of the inner workings of the admissions tutors mind!); Afterward you are going in with the advantage of your exams being a 'known quantity' but will also be looked at as a more rounded person, with the other things you have done in your life coming to the fore wrt the admissions peeps.

For photography... well you'll be looking for a foundation course first anyway won't you?

  • me14/05/2009 at 21:56

Just one small and crudely knitted square in life's rich tapestry...

    maybe crocheted?

  • Stuart C14/05/2009 at 21:56

you only have to look out yourself.

I'm off to bed in a minute, so one last word on the subject: my mock A-level results were so iffy that I only got one university offer. The actual results were much better, and a few other offers came out of the woodwork, but I decided to stick with the place that originally gave me the offer, even though I'd never even visited the place. On the first night I got talking to the fellow who lived two doors down. He was also a big F1 fan; his name was Matt Bishop. And the rest is history...

    so pace yourself to that.

Definately. This was the biggest advantage of doing a second lot of A levels!! I knew what to expect and my exam skills were already 'practised' in the 'real world'. Knowing how long something *could* take focussed the mind beautifully (*could* take, not *should* take definately different... if you have 4 questions to do in an hour, then you are looking at 5 mins a q to plan, then 10 mins a q to write the answer, assuming that all have equal marks available... you'll have all this info from doing past papers :-) )

It was the most useful thing that I learnt on the journalism course :-) Especially important when you are making pieces for broadcast rofl...

what most people don't realise, is that the skill can be transferred right across everything, not just applied to having 20 mins to record/edit/make a 45 sec. or 3 min or however long short...

It makes you really good at chairing meetings as well :-) Learning to shut up and move on a politician (or indeed teaching one of them how to only make the points that they want to, not answer the question asked rofl) so that you end the interview to hit the news/leave enough time for a 3'15" track before the nextthing/news/adbreak is a fantastically useful skill for controlling the verbosities of the voluntary (or not so voluntary but equally political project meeting) sector. And best of all is knowing that you've let everyone have their say, without any of them realising that they've been controlled for time....

There is an old saying in motoracing that if you can't raise enough sponsorship to do F3 try asking for 10 times as much and do F2. it looks lik they have decided that if they can't hack it in F3 they are as well failing in F1. Of course once Mike Gascoyne is involved the situation is different.

I think they might, since there are going to be thirteen slots, Toyota will almost certainly not be on the grid in 2010 whatever happens with regard to budget caps and that there are therefore at least four team vacancies (I'm trying to be optimistic towards F1 here)...

Whether they will be another Lola is a question I can't answer.

I think they might, since there are going to be thirteen slots, Toyota will almost certainly not be on the grid in 2010 whatever happens with regard to budget caps and that there are therefore at least four team vacancies (I'm trying to be optimistic towards F1 here)...

They won't get they entry because they won't enter. It's a publicity stunt.

  • Jon Waldock14/05/2009 at 22:26

Whether they will be another Lola is a question I can't answer.

i have a feeling, that with certain teams leaving and new ones coming in, even if there isnt a two-tear formula,we'll still get one whilst the new teams catch up for a couple of seasons

  • Alianora La Canta14/05/2009 at 22:26

    is it wrong that I want the F1 credit card? I feel like I’m falling for a Bernie money making scam. But my current one doesn’t have a car on it {Comment #424}

My bank sent me a letter last week apologising for attempting to close my credit card account. My crime? I hadn't used it in nearly a year because they never got round to sending me a PIN number...

Ock! He's probably not a good example of a politician... not slimey enough (and not prone to political speak rofl).

Now if you start sounding like Lorna Storey (you think she is bad now you should have heard her attempts to spin as an NUS politician rofl) or find you can perfect the whole Jack Straw thing then we'll start to worry...

  • Pat W14/05/2009 at 22:27

I must say though, it is fun having all these chancers come out of the woodwork again. It's like 1995.

It is true that he is not going to win any beauty contests, however great a songwriter he is. Still, putting last.fm in another tab usually fixes that problem to my satisfaction.

I went to a shop called Head this afternoon (looks like the replacement for Zavvi, previously known as Virgin Music). Bought two Doctor Who DVDs for less than £8 total. Should have known there'd be a catch - one of them still has the little red double-magnet box that stops the container from being opened. Grrr!

Not really - the first songs of his to reach the charts were in the 1970s and some of the songs he wrote were in the charts as late as 2006. Jim himself, as far as I'm aware, has the grand total of one solo album though - released in 1981 but in many ways timeless (well, the music is - can't say the same for the video!).

  • Paul (oz)14/05/2009 at 22:40

  • Andy Taylor14/05/2009 at 22:40

Not that special - Head brought all the remaining Zavvi stock from the administrators. I'm guessing they didn't pay that much for it.

Head are Zavvi under a differnt name - management bought a load of the store locations from the administrators and all the stock cheap - thus some real bargains.

Seen West Wing complete box set for £40, Laurel and Hardy box set for £30, Dad's Army set for £20, Friends box set for £40.... All absolute bargains!

Yes. Series 2 Volume 5 (including the Battle of Torchwood two-parter) and Series 4 Volume 3 (including the Silence In The Library/Forest Of The Dead two-parter). It's the latter where the shop appears to have forgotten to remove the magnet unit.

Luckily I've got to go in the near vicinity of that shop next week anyway because my dad has asked me to get a Brawn cap and doesn't see the point of paying for delivery costs via the website.

  • Jon Waldock14/05/2009 at 22:42

Ah right, i wiki'd it. National Organisation of Labour Students.....

I guess that would be like jumping onto a sinking ship, whilst it was sinking, and strapped yourself to it. i'm looking forward to when the next election is called, reminds me of the Dido song, white flag....

Since it's not fit for use at the moment, I figure I might as well get someone at Head to remove it correctly next week - I've read that if I do it wrong, I could damage the disk with no comeback, but that the store should have the correct tool to do the job. If it says it doesn't, I'll ask them to refer me to the HMV five doors down from them - that should get customer services working properly!

There has to be a better way than removing all the punctuative words? Or are they actually asking for a bulleted list?

(is the word count specific, or could you claim the 10% 'rule' or just print it out in a smaller font? Or you could go on the 'tiny words don't count' factor ;-) )

I think it's better to link to the results.

Didn't want to be a link feed, too many of those already.

Was hoping it would spark up a convo about how well people are doing. Fans of racing seem to have some sort of residual awareness of what is going on in places they don't necessarily pay a lot of interest in. So the F1 fans following might get an idea who is doing well in GP2 if they don't watch the races or read the reports..

It turns out 140 chars isn't nearly enough. I'm thinking now of doing a blog series instead...

I can easily watch a recording if I don't know, or can't remember, a result.

and the best way to convert someone like me, is live video.

The catalyst for me was a decline in interest in F1 during the Ferrari/Schumi years. From what you're saying about the refuelling ban, next year you could be a lot more open to new stuff..

    Cinqecento racing?

    And I so can’t spell this evening… (redface) {Comment #993}

I believe the correct spelling is "Cinquecento" (500 in Italian), if that's any help. I haven't taken any Italian classes either, but I see quite a few of that car whizzing up and down the local roads. In fact, I nearly got run over by one a couple of years ago, but that's another story...
