  • Christine14/06/2011 at 09:46

Definitely getting a Kindle now ;)

    Hehe.

It's worth saying we're working on an iBooks version too.

  • Amy14/06/2011 at 09:47

ooh the chef on masterchef tonight has a cake shop in melbourne that i didn't know existed and now i feel that I MUST GO THERE. Bet the cakes ain't cheap though.

  • F1Wolf14/06/2011 at 10:18

Definitely getting a Kindle now ;)

there is Kindle for iPhone, iPad etc I think

  • RubberGoat14/06/2011 at 10:18

Amy, do I have to buy a US Kindle or can you buy a UK one if you don't live there?

  • Amy14/06/2011 at 10:19

Amy, do I have to buy a US Kindle or can you buy a UK one if you don't live there?

I think you have to buy a US one.

  • RubberGoat14/06/2011 at 10:19

I think you have to buy a US one.

Bugger. If I buy a UK one I don't pay import tax...

  • Leigh O'Gorman14/06/2011 at 10:19

Just heard the new Arctic Monkeys album - not bad at all. A definitely move back to form.

    7/10 from me

    :)

  • Amy14/06/2011 at 10:20

Bugger. If I buy a UK one I don't pay import tax...

are the Danish quite tough on that? I never have to pay it even on things that apparently are subject to it.

  • Amy14/06/2011 at 10:22

Bugger. If I buy a UK one I don't pay import tax...

plus the UK one is equivalent of 172 euro and the US one is 130, so its a fair bit cheaper in the first place anyway :)

  • Amy14/06/2011 at 10:23

I just remember Denmark doesn't use euros, but the sentiment is there :D

  • RubberGoat14/06/2011 at 10:25

are the Danish quite tough on that? I never have to pay it even on things that apparently are subject to it.

    Fairly.

Yeah I'm confused now. It's something to do with where you buy the books...

well, I am still old fashioned real book in hand reader. I gave up on newspapers but not ready yet to give up real books

  • RubberGoat14/06/2011 at 10:29

It says if I live outside the UK I have to buy it from Amazon.com and redirects me here: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003DZ1Y7M

  • Amy14/06/2011 at 10:29

Yeah I'm confused now. It's something to do with where you buy the books...

I assume if you get the app from the Danish App Store it'll automatically get the books from the US store.

  • Christine14/06/2011 at 10:31

A mini post about the book, bigger post later: http://sidepodcast.posterous.com/introducing-365-f1-stories-for-the-kindle

if you select Denmark it says "Your international shipment is subject to VAT. This is the same VAT rate you pay when you buy products in your country. There are NO customs duties or any other fees. We will show you the estimated VAT upon checkout."

  • RubberGoat14/06/2011 at 10:32

Yeah. But I wanted to get the device too.

A mini post about the book, bigger post later: sidepodcast.poste…es-for-the-kindle

I did 2 things just now:

    1) got myself Kindle App for iPhone

    2) bought to book

now let's see what is all the hype about :-)

  • Christine14/06/2011 at 10:37

    Indeed.

I still reckon the US one will be cheaper, even with the tax.

  • Amy14/06/2011 at 10:39

I've been looking at the sample. I can't quite believe the amount of work that must have gone into it!!

I looked at the sample and then I bought it and now I must request that Sidepodcast folks stop writing because between you and Alex you'll bankrupt me :D

  • F1Wolf14/06/2011 at 10:40

    *hugs*

book downloaded, it appeared right next to the Treasure Island and Pride & Prejudice (those apparently come with the Kindle App) looks like I have something to read on my travels to and from the office :-)

  • Christine14/06/2011 at 10:41

I looked at the sample and then I bought it and now I must request that Sidepodcast folks stop writing because between you and Alex you'll bankrupt me :D

There will be a part two, I'm afraid :)

  • Amy14/06/2011 at 10:41

There will be a part two, I'm afraid

I guess thats still better than the same book in 3 formats.

    I'm a sucker for supporting those I know :)

  • Mr C14/06/2011 at 10:43

quick note about the kindle book.

we've included a table of contents (TOC) at the beginning, but it doesn't show up in the current version of the kindle app (not sure about the actual kindle device). as the book adhere's to a standard spec, i'm assuming that the kindle app is a bit out of date and a future software update from amazon will magically pop up a TOC at some point.

  • Alison14/06/2011 at 10:44

No TOC on the kindle either.

  • F1Wolf14/06/2011 at 10:44

in case anyone is in our beautiful city this coming Saturday:

    apparently it's an extra #40.

  • Elissa14/06/2011 at 10:47

    Hi all,

Nice to see Mr and MRs C doing an ebook...

I'll download a sample and go from there :-)

I use my kindle app religiously....although it's all geek based reading ({Maxwells equations, physics ciursebooks etc)....actually come to think of it I did read the stigs book and that was alright

  • Mr C14/06/2011 at 10:49

No TOC on the kindle either.

cheers. must be built to v1, and we're using v2. am already exciting by version 3 of the spec. keep up amazon!

it was $6 only for me, no tax probably as we do not have such thing here

  • Amy14/06/2011 at 10:55

$4 for me, but that extra $2 charge only disappeared in Australia recently.

  • Elissa14/06/2011 at 10:56

What's going on in the world of F1?

Seems the big news is the RBR/LH rumours...

Martin Brundle wrote a good account of what LH needs to do to sort himself out a little

  • RubberGoat14/06/2011 at 10:56

$4 for me, but that extra $2 charge only disappeared in Australia recently.

Cool. $6.90 is 36DKK which is less than the cost of a pint ;)

  • Elissa14/06/2011 at 10:57

Oh,,...I did include a link but that didn't work

  • Leigh O'Gorman14/06/2011 at 10:59

What's going on in the world of F1?

Mike Coughlan did a little Q&A about how nice it is to be back in F1, Virgin are stopping work on their 2011 car, leading them to being 110% away from Q1 pole by September and Ken Block will be burning Pirelli rubber at Monza in August.

Apart from that, nowt much really.

  • F1Wolf14/06/2011 at 11:00

Cool. $6.90 is 36DKK which is less than the cost of a pint ;)

and so is $6 here, #expensivebeer

Mike C gave an interview? I would've thought he wants to keep his head down and get on with it. Anything particularily smug from him?

  • Leigh O'Gorman14/06/2011 at 11:02

Without wishing to sound rather odd, does anyone know a handy way to record calls on the iPhone?

I've got some interviews lined-up for the podcast and am looking for a handy way to do it with quality when I'm not at home with my mixer.

  • Leigh O'Gorman14/06/2011 at 11:03

Nowt out of the ordinary - Williams are a great tea, looking to move on, great to be back in F1, photocopiers in Grove are expensive...

  • Elissa14/06/2011 at 11:07

Without wishing to sound rather odd, does anyone know a handy way to record calls on the iPhone?

It should have a sound recorder built in....just check in your apps...

  • Leigh O'Gorman14/06/2011 at 11:07

It should have a sound recorder built in....just check in your apps...

It cuts out when phone calls start (by law I think)

  • Leigh O'Gorman14/06/2011 at 11:08

It should have a sound recorder built in....just check in your apps...

I should add that there is app that records and announces at the start of the call that the conversation is being recorded, but unfortunately it appears to be US only

  • F1Wolf14/06/2011 at 11:10

isn't today a day when Team Lotus announces that new big "sponser" ?

  • Elissa14/06/2011 at 11:11

Oh you're trying to record the actual phone call? Didn't realise that....I'm stumped I'm afriad...maybe search the apps store online? Failing that do the phone call via loudspeaker and record somehow from that?

I use a sound recorder religiously in lectures etc, godsend.

  • Leigh O'Gorman14/06/2011 at 11:11

... I did not really expect info about Lotus using Williams wind tunnel

  • Elissa14/06/2011 at 11:16

I only bought my current phone three weeks ago...

Fair enough.....let me skype my iphone guru and see what he says

I think yr asking for an impossibilty though with the current range of apps and you needing to be on the move as opposed to being sat at a PC recording

Oh well good luck either way........

My friend's telling me that Apple don't like you to run 3rd party software whilst calling (something about it clashing with the app that's making the call)...only way to record direct from the phone is if Apple launch an official app..

He went down the audi recording route....ie sticking a lead out your headphone socket into a small recorder..might not pick up your voice though

Ever wondered why Rosberg finished out of the points?

Here's the fan-made video to show it:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVCmglwgoSg

Went too high over the kerbs at turn 1 and destroyed his front wing. His front wing had been damaged earlier hitting Kobayashi a lap prior.

  • Alex Andronov14/06/2011 at 12:33

Leigh... I think this might help you... There is a service called http://ipadio.com/ It provides you with a telephone number that you can call which can be recorded (and even broadcast live, although I think you can turn that off).

So the idea is that you could call ipadio and make sure you were recording, then press the + on the phone call and call the person you want to interview. Then download the recording afterwards.

It would certainly want testing but it might just work.

  • Amy14/06/2011 at 12:33

Ever wondered why Rosberg finished out of the points?

I like the way you say ever wondered like it wasn't less than 48 hours ago :D

  • Alex Andronov14/06/2011 at 12:35

I remember hearing when she first cut her foot and it sounded like a really weird injury. Who knew it would go on to such horrible things!

and Kim Clijsters had exactly the same foot injury after her and managed to come back before her so lots of people were kind of like 'hmm, is this just an excuse to take time off?' but then she missed the US Open and it suddenly felt serious because you know she'd never miss a slam unless something was really wrong.

thats boooo, I thought you'd get lucky since it's still the Aegon Championships!

This also works in reverse to me, unless its a slam or a masters ATP tournaments aren't shown until the semi finals but WTA is shown right from the start. Thumbs up to Eurosport :)

So, Ferrari have re-conformed Philip Morris (Marlboro) as a sponsor, the BBC received 700 complaints because F1 ran over the Antiques Roadshow and the lovely Pippa Mann may have an announcement about IndyCar races coming soon

    :)

  • RubberGoat14/06/2011 at 13:13

I have spent 3 hours making a graph in excel. 3 HOURS!!! and it is still not behaving grrrrrrrrrrrr

  • RubberGoat14/06/2011 at 13:14

So, Ferrari have re-conformed Philip Morris (Marlboro) as a sponsor,

    Unbelievable.

the BBC received 700 complaints because F1 ran over the Antiques Roadshow

I always laugh at stuff like this. poor mug hunters!

and the lovely Pippa Mann may have an announcement about IndyCar races coming soon

ooh she said if she can find a sponsor she can get a ride...

  • Nick14/06/2011 at 13:15

Can you send it to me later? I might be able to help?

I gave up and cheated. I wanted to combine this area graph and a scatter graph. http://yfrog.com/h4bgembuj

    Sounds easy, but oh no....

  • RubberGoat14/06/2011 at 13:17

I gave up and cheated. I wanted to combine this area graph and a scatter graph. http://yfrog.com/h4bgembuj

Could you not have just made two parts and then pasted the area graph semi transparently underneath in a photo editing programme?

  • Leigh O'Gorman14/06/2011 at 13:19

I always laugh at stuff like this. poor mug hunters!

Understandably so. I'd be interested to see what the viewing figures for the GP were though.

ooh she said if she can find a sponsor she can get a ride...

    Hopefully that is the case.

Sadly for Formula Renault driver Ollie Millroy, his funding has run out in the middle of his campaign - 4th in Championship with Manor Racing and Marussia and he still fell by the wayside.

  • Nick14/06/2011 at 13:19

Could you not have just made two parts and then pasted the area graph semi transparently underneath in a photo editing programme?

I need to be able to move the scatter points between the zones though depending on a variety of things, the zones will change too.

I saved the area graph from a screenshot and used it as the background image.

It means more work in the long run, but at least Its done for now

  • RubberGoat14/06/2011 at 13:21

Why couldn't you paste it in as another series? Excel can have two different types of graph in one...

  • Leigh O'Gorman14/06/2011 at 13:21

Went to Maplins to get some bits and pieces for recording, but still managed to forget the lead to connect two devices together

    Buh !!

"Nobody knows if it will be F1 Minute, or F1 Big Picture," said a random bloke that knows nothing about the situation, "but it certainly won't be Sidpodcast itself, Giggles has had some good posts in the past but in recent months his rss feed has looked emptier than a milkybar cupboard without a lock on it".

GE JOINS TEAM LOTUS AS A PREMIUM PARTNER

Team Lotus has today confirmed that GE, a leading global technology and infrastructure company, has joined the Anglo-Malaysian team as a Premium Partner. As part of the partnership, the GE branding will be seen on the Team Lotus T128 F1 cars and across the team’s entire race and factory structure from the British Grand Prix in July 2011. The partnership with GE provides extensive brand and business benefits to both parties, giving GE a high-profile global platform to showcase advanced technologies and providing Team Lotus with leading edge technological, R&D and manufacturing resources that will help accelerate the team’s progress, on and off track.

An Open Letter from the desk of Alex "Giggles" Andronov

Unfounded speculation in the press today took what was an innocent chat between Ms Blachford and myself about a panda that has been trapped at Berlin Airport for a number of years and turned it into a full scale assault on common sense.

For example if I can't even keep regular posts on gamboling.co.uk what business would I have working on F1Minute - the world's premier source of 1 minute long F1 news? None that's what!

The article is a travesty from beginning to end and there is no truth in the rumours that I am looking to move, I love the home that I have had a gamboling.co.uk since I joined the internet back in the stone ages. However although I may have said in the past that gamboling.co.uk was the site that I wished to write for until I retired the internet is a funny place, and the winds of change can blow one from place to place, and I never said that! So stop twisting my words, and when I have a 15 minute chat with Lukeh later where we muse on muse that will not mean my future at gamboling.co.uk is in question it merely means that I am exploring other avenues in the hope that the avenue that I am on becomes wider.

    Yours,

He goes on as if they are winning all the time when they are not even scoring points. Even HRT beat them last weekend. Did Minardi ever beat Red Bull? Nope!

He makes comments like "Oh, we are so good that in Q1 we made the midfielders run on options".

Wow. So you make the midfield teams have to put in a fast lap to be 100% sure. Great progress!

Good question. Daniel Ricciardo and Red Bull decided against Red Bull, because if you have a solid learning base behind you, there's not a huge push to do GP2 - but then again, Lotus are not Red Bull.

Wow. So you make the midfield teams have to put in a fast lap to be 100% sure. Great progress!

I think he forgot about Alguersuari, I don't know, being slightly quicker.

More than can be said for Virgin, honestly, but that's another story.

Indeed, but Virgin are acknowledging they need to do better and that's OK. Lotus have this swagger thats arrogant and starting to get annoying.

I don't think it's arrogant, they keep saying it's only there 2nd season.

It's more like positivity, and looking at the sponsors they are bringing in it's working a lot better than the Williams/Virgin approach of saying "It's all going wrong"

they did that to me last year. email them, they'll sort it for you. They rang me, appologised profusely and sorted it so i only had booked one set of tickets, then gave me a refund and rang me a few months later to check it was okay. Thank god it was okay, i didn't fancy paying £226.. :)

ahh I remember that, a year later and it still plays up *shakes fist at silly system*

I haven't had the second confirmation receipt yet if it did do it twice but I'll keep an eye out. Only reason I wondered was because it failed to load during the processing debit card bit and brought up an error, so I thought I'd try again and it did the exact same thing. I got a confirmation receipt email after that but will keep an eye on bank account anyways just in case, bit odd how it randomly brings up an error when processing card details though. Still, I have my ticket, WOO!! :D

they did explain why but am sure they tried to fix it. It only effected me apparently so it wasn't a massive problem for them last year..

i love it... now but the workshops and lectures we had on book design and how to use it were painful and long.. i will never get that time back...ever.

I do love it now tho, even did a booklet for my friend by choice the other day! :)

I want to be clear I want my vision of HTML 5 goodness newstand, and until we know exactly what Apple's vision is I can not be held accountable. So if their newstand is horrible then I didn't support it :)

  • Bassano14/06/2011 at 17:28

well we have to cover the cost of apple developer licences and the cost of indesign too. so probably nothing, ever.

You need to get TUAW, Cult of Mac or someone to feature it as App of the Week

I always loved Rally games but they were always a let down

good, good memories of being down porthcawl or barry in the arcades after a day at the beach playing racing games in the seats that moved about and allsorts. It's a shame arcades went out of fashion big style really quite rapidly with the whole deal of home consoles.

Yes, I didn't see him racing, but I've read a book about Grand Prix's history and there I found out who where them...

I am sure you will find it one day.

It's unusual for someone your age to have an interest in such ancient history.

If you are interested in Mercedes of that period you should learn about Rudi Uhlenhaut.

It is a fabulous book. Joe should have me on commission because I have sold dozens of them. You don't need to know anything about motor racing of the period. I knew a bit about the three drivers but I don't think it would have made any difference had I never heard of them.

I think Lewis must have taken Windsor's advice at the start of the season. So far dues to a series of unfortunate accidents he has over-promised and under-delivered just like USF1.
