We are right in the middle of live commenting Le Mans, so if you haven't joined in yet, then get over there and start talking (up until 2pm). For those not interested in the endurance event, here are some F1 things to discuss:
- Luca di Montezemolo started the Le Mans race and has been talking about the current goings on in F1. He says that for Ferrari, it is either a change of the proposed 2010 rules, or the team will definitely be upping sticks and heading elsewhere. Naturally, he is using Le Mans as a high profile platform for his thoughts, but he did say he wanted to avoid too much negativity, as France is a happy place right now!
- Giorgio Pantano is hoping for a race with the new Campos team. He raced with them in GP2 in 2007, and hopes they can help him return to F1. He's 30 now, though, and still moaning about the fact that he hasn't had a second chance in Formula 1. What about the younger drivers who haven't had their first chance?
That'll do for now. It's a quiet day in terms of news, but there's plenty of racing action to behold. I'll see you in the comments.
Sorry to distract people from the Le Mans live commenting (I would join in but LCLT crashes every single time I've tried loading it this evening), but I've got a Twitter question:
What does QFT mean?
Context (if it helps:)
McLaren_Fan QFT right here- RT @lacanta: #Iremember A lot of stuff other people would find incredibly boring.
quoted for truth.
someone is repeating what you said because they agree with it.
Ah good, I don't need to worry about it then :) I thought I'd done something strange for a while there...
morning people
Good morning, Paul.
Just finished watching stupid Le Mans race, now tuning in to the Queen's tennis final.
Murray will probably lose because I am watching. This seems to be what happens.
This is an acceptable result ;)
Hehehe.
Think of it like this. Peugeot won the race, Franck raced for Peugeot. Therefore, Franck won the race!
Erm... if it would convince Franck it would convince me. What are the chances? ;)
he is allowed to win Queens. As long as he doesn't win Wimby, we'll be OK.
Why dont you bet on Andy, then its less unacceptable when he wins?
Afternoon all! everyone alright?
aww Franck came second though, he could have come alot worse... plus he had a broken leg, he did pretty well didn't he?
I'll be watching tennis too. I like le mans but i prefer tennis and f1.
He's the favourite, not paying enough :D
Second is not first.
Hey Lou. you mean watching some guy from Greys Anatomy wasn't worth it?
first game to Blake. Hooray!
but it's better than last....;)
Not really.
i don't even watch Greys Anatomy so i wouldn't know who you mean lol
oh.. fair enough.
Did i hear Leno was there with him?>
;)
*sits in the lovely daily thread* :P
What's with all the Murray hatred? Maybe I'm biased being Scottish and all...
I think Amy doesn't want him to win because he's a threat to Federer. I don't care who wins as long as I get to see good tennis.
I don't like him mostly because of Lewis Hamilton syndrome, so its not really his fault. The media just big him up as favourite for every single tournament even when he blatantly isn't, and don't even mention what other players on tour are up to. Plus, he has a bit of a temper and I don't like his on court manner. That is his fault. But it's mainly the first reason.
All my friends hate him too though. I think he's too good to be adopted as a Brit! Can't support someone who has a real chance of actually winning....
just to get a bit geeky, we've not been idle the past 24h. if you're using the new safari 4 browser, and if you refresh: http://www.sidepodcast.com/livecommenting/
the page now has a sound alert each time a new comment is posted.
currently audio is defaulted to "on". although we'll likely set it to be "off" by default after a bit more testing.
it's already driving christine nuts, but let us know what you think and if it's something that should also be added to the real-time page.
It WILL be defaulted to off.
Please tell me how to turn it off before i do it. Else I might go slowly crazy....
good ;)
Murray breaks Blakes serve then Blake breaks him back. Could be a long match.
i think i'm going to head off soon. need to think about something other than SPC. see you on friday i guess but i don't think i'll be here on sunday as i'll be travelling, but maybe after the race ;)
Right, back on the doohickey, back on the daily. :)
Hmmm not so sure about the choice of noise!
Is it a tambourine?
There's a checkbox.
Does it matter that I don't know anything about MotoGP? Will I still notice the amazingness?
Sounds like scissors!
You're heart will go up to 150
From what I've just read on AUTOSPORT, oh yes!
Is the navigation bit at the bottom left of live commenting new? I like!
Did you guys ever have your mash with leek btw? My housemate just gave me cheese mash and it's good!
Haas just beat Djokovic in the final at Halle. Nice for Haas to get a win at home I guess.
I got some leeks, but haven't made it yet.
Yes
Must sleep now. Thanks ever so much SidePodFriends
Bye Jeremy
g'night.
bye Jeremy
Night Jeremy. :)
maracas. i think.
there are other noises, but one sounded like a windows error "plonk" and another was a bit harsh.
will keep playing, but after running it all night, this was the one that provided the right amount of notification without scaring the heck out of us.
I don't actually mind it now I've just turned the volume down on my computer.
I'm not sure who is more annoying... Anthony Hamilton, or Murray's mum...
so what you mean is...you like the noise when you cant hear it ;)
:)
should also say, this will work on other browsers when firefox 3.5 comes out next month and google chrome 3 at some point. it might never work on IE.
Hey, where's Amy?
Have decided it's not quite as annoying when we're not live commenting a race. It is good if you are off doing something else and don't have to bother checking to see if there's a [1 new] on the tab.
Which is funny, because when Mr C introduced the tab counter thing, it was revolutionary that I didn't have to keep flicking to the page itself. Now it's the next step along.
Last seen watching a MotoGP race, I think.
I"m here
Down not off! I have to say it's okay while I'm watching the tennis and the comments are fairly infrequent. Saves me turning my head so much....
5 laps to go. Nothing amazing yet.
Still watching MotoGP, I hope? :)
It's the last 2 to 3 that are nuts.
don't stop watching
:D You should've seen us live commenting RG. :)
My minor annoyance is that it makes the noise as you post comments....
hmm. not sure if that can be changed. but point taken.
Why has everyone else even turned up today. The cameras have shown the same two dudes the whole race.
Just to check, is there a live show tonight?
Not a chance!
Tell him there is not one
But, oh, therein lies the drama. :)
Well done
So far they have both passed each other once. 2 laps to go.
ALMS at Lime Rock in a month's time. I wonder if Peugeot and Audi will enter now
Like on Tweetdeck when things are a bit quiet? I turned the TD notice off because it annoyed me during races, but it is quite useful in quiet times
can they do that? when do they have to decide?
Come on Andy! He played so well yesterday but it's like he's not turned up yet today....
Precisely that.
Oh boo. Boring winner.
Audi might consider it but Peugeot won't be in the ALMS until Petit. I'm expecting they'll turn up for that.
Seriously!?! Oh my goodness, i think sleep has effected you :P
who's the other guy?
It was a good battle, but doesn't he win ALL THE TIME?
WHAT?! I'm shocked you found that boring. :O
James Blake. I like him today.
Not this season, he hasn't.
?!!?
Do you have a love-hate relationship with him? :D
Ah. I don't follow MotoGP at all. I have learnt that the races are way too short though.
Er, guys...
http://www.autosport.com/gallery/photo.php/id/1310529
he dosent, he's just damn good.
I like anyone playing Mandy ;)
hahaha
that pass defied every single physics law...
He is rude though. I do totally see that! He's really cheeky aboiut when he challenges decisions. I think that's quite unsporting
Agreed. I still don't know how he did it, TBH. Lorenzo doesn't, either.
Stoner doesn't look well
He was fine by the press-con. Kinda reminded me of Alonso at Bahrain, though.
It was too hot in Barcelona
It really bothered me at the Australian Open when Federer got called arrogant when a British reporter asked him if he thought Andy was his biggest threat and he said no. Then Andy got knocked out early. I don't see how you can call him arrogant when he was correct.
:D
Novak was worse when he was all 'he doesn't deserve to be here', only people who have won grand slam events should be allowed to play...
Roger doesn't do arrogant. He's such a gentleman.
He's terrible as well but it evens out to me since he's so funny. Andy is yet to make me laugh :D
He got called it again at RG when someone pointed out to him that Murray has beaten him the last few times they've met, and he answered that a best of 5 slam is a different beast to a best of 3 tour match. Which is also correct. Roger is well known for stepping it up at slams.
That's pretty bad to say that about someone who's beating you in the world rankings!
He wasn't at the time though!
I have no idea when entries close but I imagine ALMS would love to have either or both there
And when Roger wins all the time ?
It sounds like one, does that make it a maraca? ;)
I didn't really become a fan until he was getting beaten ;)
He is just getting inside his head like he did to Gibernau. He destroyed him. He went from being very close to Rossi to quitting because he was nowhere near. He shouldn't have annoyed Rossi though. That was stupid.
Well, have a nice day. I have to start mine, see you during the week
I love Nadal. He's my favourite man.
Something tells me you'll have fun if you join us here while watching Wimbledon... :D
You are just twisted
Bye Guille
I love him off court and when hes playing anyone except Roger. I definitely need to get to one of his games next year.
More hatred??
Nadal gets a mixed reaction here. Some like him, others not so much. :)
See yah!
I am so excited about the draw coming out on Friday. I hate the long wait between slams after the AO then all of a sudden BAM there's two of them.
When is Wimbeldon?
Starts this weekend, I think?
As in today?
I wish this match was better though. Then it'd feel like summer! I'm sat outside in my garden watching it on my lappytop with the sun beating down.
No, next weekend.
Topped 4000 comments inthe two Le Mans threads
Wow! Good wifi connection? :)
starts June 22
Mon 22nd
Lol, I live in a student house. By "garden" I mean "patch of grass roughly the size of my kitchen table", it's closer to the wifi transmitter than my living room
BRB, reboot!
oh Andy won that easily.
That was an unsatisfying match! Andy played pretty badly imo but he won too easily for it to matter....
I'd have liked to see him play Roddick
http://www.autosport.com/gallery/photo.php/id/1310520
mmm
That is a serious looking trophy
I'd have enjoyed a good Randy v Mandy match :D
That's the special Citroen that was designed with the help of Gran Turismo. :D
It's looooovely
Smile boy you won!!
right then. i think we're going outside.
Stay away from any rocks ;)
Let's be careful out there
you guys are really getting into this "outside" thing.
have fun! be careful though :P
and stay close to Christine so you don't get lost
if i were you i'd wear a full face helmet, 3 layer nomex, fireproof gloves, knee pads, elbow pads, back protector.
just in case
According to Google, it's quite... popular
eeek?
yes. Don't want to lose her twice in two days.
Propaganda
hold her hand when crossing the road. look both ways, you might not hear cars coming, it might be a diesel
I just realised I have a pie on the bench. Should really go and put that in the fridge.
It does look nice out there
You need to put it in the oven. It will take days to cook in the fridge
they need people to go outside to use there fancy maps.
Until I read 'fridge', I was beginning to think that was a euphemism
Don't be lured to the dark side
Nadal has dodgy knees?
i think you'll find thats pie or bun in the oven ;)
You're safe. I was going to play golf at this time but I got out of it because I have to study.
Wasn't sure if it was some kind of Kiwi/Aussie hybrid sland :)
as long as one of them is looking... Lukeh saved me from being run over about twice yesterday.. roads are dangerous.. lol
*slang*
You sure that's a good idea?
It could be Franck driving the 908 looking for Christine for comfort after he lost Le Mans.
Some people think it could be the end of his carreer.
His techniques puts enormous strain on his knees
you should always use the crossings lou, you should know that by now ;)
Like I said, the green man is a vital road sign :D
they have some 908's with 2 seats inside (its a squeeze...) so he could show her a good time.
i was more interested in the taxi's with f1 cars on and trying to take pictures of them to worry about the other traffic....
Bad tendonitis. Has had to play with them strapped for years and by the end of the season he pretty much can't play anymore.
You weren't in the big smoke were you Lou?
look out for the one with the number plate HEI3 KOV ;)
We saw lots and lots of Heikki taxis :)
Although none with heikki actually driving, and none with Martin whitmarsh in them...
I might just have to watch that video again. SO SMILEY.
If anyone finds the pescarolo crash on you tube whilst theyre surfing can you tweet it my way please :D
I think it is comedy brilliance.
"Where to, boss?"
Lewis should become an actor... oh wait. he may when he retires *sighs*
And post it here please
the acting from both is top notch "it's a bit quiet here today isn't it" "its dead isn't it"
Just watched the Hammy Scalextrix advert.
Very good, very good
what is this? can you link me perrlease
plus barry from eastenders adds to it, who i believe (from scientific investigation and analysis) is actually the greatest soap actor of all time.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1NXwbepI88
my absolute favourite bit is at 1.28 when Heikki does his wee grin after flashing his highbeams at Lewis :D
How many times have you watched it now?
erm. 10ish? :D
still boycotting Vodafone for them not letting Heikki win though ;)
This is in my village! I? saw Lewis hamilton and the other guy! watched the filming fun day it was!!
oh dear, youtube comments never cease to amaze me for the wrong reasons ;)
Haha.
Im tempted to cycle over there this week, and be nosy...
You know there's a competition called the Taxi GP on the Vodafone website. Best team over the whole season wins a VIP trip as guest of McLaren at the Italian GP.
http://taxigp.vodafone.co.uk/
THE OTHER GUY?
thats awesome, they're both terrible terrible actors, but its very funny :D
I like that I have probably watched the ad for the competition more than anyone. And I can't enter it. :D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0So0VeMyrY&feature=related
:D
Whitmarsh? the car parts look like they were filmed on studio roads...
I think the commentor was referring to that other driver... urm... Hakkinen was it? I can't remember his name now.
Yeah I'm gonn go hide for my life from Amy now.
Why cant he be more like that!
The part in the village though only had Lewis in it?
YOU'D BETTER RUN BOY! RUN LIKE THE WIND!
Or not. I'm way too lazy to chase.
i love it
Isnt that what the collective is for? :D
Y'know, the original season of the Simpsons is so rubbish to watch. Lousy animation, the story's are really bleh and the sound quality is real bad. Thank goodness for Season 2 onwards (till about season 10...)
I think ive seen them all 5 or 6 times. It was the only season BBC2 showed for a painful while
Ahh BBC2, 6pm, Fridays. good times.
Did anyone also notice that all the non-taxis just "happened" to be Mercedes cars?
Have posted the first entry into a little multi entry thing I'm doing looking at various aspects of loyalty within the world of F1, if anyone's interested :)
Good start, Lukeh. Keep it up! :)
I get a mention!
Oh cool, i'll have a read!
Anyone thats interested here is a newish map of the the surrounds of the Abu Dhabi circuit. Although i dont think it will be that green this year unless they use astroturf.
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/yas-map-jpg
Is that a Warner Bros park I see to the NE of the circuit?
Afternoon all.
Fingers tingling after industrious hammering of the keyboard in service of YOU KNOW WHERE.
Where can I get a cork for the journey home?
:D
I ddnt notice that, but its a pretty big logo!
Hey Stuart. What was the atmosphere like at the circuit when Peugeot won?
Looks like Abu Dhabi really are building on the whole thing.
I dont know if Mr/Mrs C will see this but there is a slightly rude graph on the drop
They were mad for it. Most amusing of all was the circuit announcer, who kept shouting an elongated "Peugeooooooot!" in the style of "Champaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagne!"
haha, thats quite funny. spamspam
Any discontent in the press room about not letting their cars race?
Hey! David T can hire him as a backup. :D
There was a lot of champagne on the podium. Must be a few corks in that area. Failing that you will need to settle for duct tape
I hear they didnt use much duck tape, so there must be loads left
If they get back from outside they will deal with it. SPAM in dropio is becoming more common
An Aussie hack asked Brabs if he was worried about the prospect of being ordered to move over for the Frenchies.
To be honest, there was not a high class of scribe in the press room. Accreditation is much more lax and a lot of them are amateurs. I don't want this to sound snobby. It's just that they don't know how to behave (eg the woman standing next to my chair who spent the whole presser sending and receiving texts - with a noisy alert - even while Wurz was answering the facile question she'd asked) and they get in the way of the people who are actually trying to work.
Worst of all, a lot of them are little more than autograph hunters. While I was waiting for Bruno Senna the other day there was a guy waiting for him with a marker pen and an enormous wodge of photos (clearly destined for eBay).
You ever tried peeling that stuff off? Don't want my bottom waxed.
Cheers for the insight Stuart, I find that stuff really interesting.
I wonder if Sidepodcast will be sending a delegation in there next year :P
Great insight as always, Stuart. Appreciate it. :D
Hahaha! :D
You can get sponsorship for that kind of thing. And publicity for the book
I'm not sure it's worth it though....apparently being duck tape waxed is worse than normal waxing, because the duck tape dosent pull hte hair out completely...alls i know is that if someone is near me with duck tape when im wearing shorts then i wont be there for long
Interesting. A contingent of bloggers were allowed into the Indy media centre for the 500, they were well behaved and welcomed by most although there were some discontent at allowing amateurs in.
As you could understand, imagine if some new guys jsut walked into the job you've spent years getting into etc
I suppose it is the French 'way' to be more relaxed about these things, although that could be a dangerous generalisation.
Right, we're doing one. Bye all.
Thanks for the excellent updates!
See ya! Thanks for keeping us updated. Have a safe trip if we don't speak to you before
Thanks a lot, safe travels
FOTA have complained that Alan Donnely was performing his role as Max's agent at the Turkish grand prix, where he was supposed to be an impartial steward.
http://allenonf1.wordpress.com/2009/06/14/teams-attack-chief-f1-stewards-impartiality/
I need to stop procrastinating.
And some sad and worrying news from Abingdon http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/8099654.stm
Agreed, although my procrasting has been quite productive so far
Aw nuts :-(
never heard of abingdon, hope theyre ok :(
Crikey, it's tipping it down at Croft.
quick question as i haven't been able to read back on the comments of the last few days yet - has mr and mrs c said anything about their being a debrief this weekend? cause last weekend they were unsure if they would have one or not.
Christine gave me the rather precise response of "Not a chance!" when I asked. So my guess is...no?
there isnt one
No show tonight.
oooh forgot about the last race. yeey for rain
Thanks :)
I think after the 24 hours we've all just had, we need to recover.
For the record: it's duct tape
:D
oh really? 8-) whoops
Put some Tartan packaging on that tape, my friend - that's Scotch tape.
personally i take trying to do an A2 stats exam on no sleep a challenge :D
You sure?
Safety car has just been called for the second time - literally straight after it came in.
proves that slowing cars down can sometimes be counter productive
I think I'm going to have to close Doohickey and Tweetdeck for a few hours or I'll never get started. See you later. :-)
whhhhooooopp
see ya
Scotch tape is quite generic, they do lots of varieties
You know that phase where for some reason you lose interest and enjoyment of all the things you normally enjoy? For some reason, I think that's a phase I'm going through right now... I'm watching the BTCC but I'm not enjoying it as much as I normally would. Strange.
I bet RG was loving the sun earlier....now he's a drowned rat heheheeh
thats a brand name :P
That would be because they're behind the safety car ;)
dont spoil my fun ;)
"Duct tape (sometimes called duck tape"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duct_tape_wallet
we're all winners :)
Though Duck Tape does sound better, I will admit ;)
Le Mans to BTCC is quite a step...
Not sure any ducks would agree though
don't worry, everyone in Australia looks at me funny everytime I ask for Sellotape.
I remember adverts with Ducks :)
whats it called over there?
sticky tape. weirdos.
The common brand name is...
Durex...
:D
:D
sounds like they've been watching too much Blue Peter
seriously!?!
Yup.
:D
this scare me. I now realise I haven't bought any since I have lived here.
Do they call glue sticky paste?
Has everyone caught up on moto gp?
The 125 race had an 'interesting' ending
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/motorbikes/8099343.stm
better not tell us your going out to buy some "durex" because that will mean something very different to us ;)
haha not that I'm aware of! They do call duvets doonas and jerseys jumpers. When I use these terms its honestly like they've never heard them before. So weird.
means something very different to me too!
Yup, we saw that. What a clot :D
We say 'jumper' over here too
Doona always makes me laugh
A couple of rolls of durex please...
So does anyone know what new apps will be available on the new iPhone OS 3.0? If Mr. Andy Taylor's about, that would be ideal.
Kinda like Bjorn Wirdheim... Thought he'd won the F3000 race at Monaco, cruised to the line... but someone nipped past to win!
What a donut
Great ending to the big race though
All current Apps have to be OS 3.0 compliant
Yeah! *winks at Amy*
:D
my dad wanted to know if they called them 'jumper cows' :D
:D I did enjoy it more than any other MotoGP race ending I have seen. All 2 of them. :D
:)
Safety car is out again at Croft, thanks to Pinkney having a large accident.
I use both jersey and jumper, they are different things to me?
A jumper is woollen, a jersey not so
:D I don't think there'll be any beating this one in a loooong time...
QFT
A jersey is also something they wear in the tour de france
Have heard rumours that O2 (and AT&T in the US) will soon to be loosing their exclusivity. Talk that a two-year deal will be ending [which would make it July, if true]
F1 needs some team mates fighting like that. I have put $10 on Bazza for Silverstone again ;)
Yup, I heard about that at work. They lose their exclusivity this summer, so would this mean the iPhone as a whole would then be available on Vodafone or Orange or 3?
We had some recently - remember Alonso-Hamilton in 2007? ;)
Im tempted to put a bet on Webbahhh, but i dont know how to use a betting shop so i wont...
Orange or 3 would require hardware changes, Vodafone, not so
I love the conversations we have here when theres no racing :D
You are a glutton for punishment aren't you? ;)
So the iPhone on Vodafone would be a real possibility then?
There's always online
I think you can already in the land of Oz
HOW. ON. EARTH. DID. GIOVANARDI. DO. THAT?!
No there isnt *fingers in ears saying la la la*
I wouldn't say 'real'
Have only heard rumours of Orange [and Verizon in the states]
Both of which are non-GSM
You can get an iPhone on T-Mobile in Germany.
Some countries have multi carriers, like France, I think
Verizon is half vodafone so it would make sense to do a wider deal with a company like that
Hehehe, Plato shoving Neal off. Ah, just like old times :D
I guess it depends if Apple are willing to produce two types to cater for the different networks
I just want a phone i can use in different countries. a phone that i have to pay roaming charges on isnt that attractive
There are 2 or 3 networks you can get it on here, I know Vodafone is one of them
You want to switch out sim cards?
Why most phones i have had work on all networks. I guess they already made a different one for Australia as their system is unique
Yes!
Vodafone in the UK just recently abolished roaming charges for 35 European countries.
All are GSM
I don't really travel in Europe... And they dont have the iphone! :P
woah. That sounds fantastic. I hate having to switch sim cards between countries. Plus I forgot to top up my NZ prepay one and I lost the number I'd had for 9 years :(
ah. What does the UK use?
GSM & UMTS
What about if phone companies produced disposable sim cards. Kinda like disposable cameras. There's a number on the card which has been set up for whatever country you want to visit, pay a one off charge when you buy the card and then you get a certain amount of minutes and texts. All you pay for is the sim card and that's it. You also specify what dates you're going for, so when you get back, that number expires, but you can keep that sim card for future use. Just pay for what you want to use when going away and that is it.
Hmm, maybe instead of keeping the card you were able to recycle them instead. Saves on thousands of SIM cards just getting dumped.
Telstra have the iphone and they use a variant of UMTS
I have 5 sims for 3 different countries!
Their 3G is UMTS
2G is GSM
[I think]
Pay as you go, I hope!
Would need to jailbreak the iPhone for that, or buy unlocked
A that makes sense. Their 3g is called Next g and not compatible with phone from outside the country
I didn't mean for the iPhone, I meant in general.
I heart my Singapore SIM card. I got a free umbrella with it :D
Yes, but 1 is a contract :D albeit a very short one
Haha, great deal.
I like one of my Dubai ones, its transparent!
Actually, I just realised I was lying when I said F1 sponsorship has never influenced me. When I landed in Singapore and went to buy a SIM they gave me the choice of 3 networks and I went with Singtel simply because they were the title sponsor of the race :D
Forgot there was one other legendary race taking place this week - the Isle of Man TT.
Hey - me too! :D
it actually broke on me last time I used it :( It was black and one panel had a chequered flag in it :D
Vodafone AU wanted to charge me $3.50 for every text message I sent while I was roaming. Local SIM for the win!
Ripoff!
lol, you werent trying to use it to finish a mini race were you?
no? ok im cracking up...
That's quite extortionate
It's worth noting that Vodafone aren't doing away with roaming charges from the goodness of their heart but from EU pressure
Before the EU stepped in on mobile charges, everyone was happy with 12 month contracts. Now it's 18 or 24 months
I got a 6 month one with a free phone!
Just looking on what the new iPhone OS 3.0 will enable me to do:
http://www.apple.com/iphone/softwareupdate/
There's some cool new features there.
I'm guessing Apple's servers will be hit pretty hard on Wednesday
Apparently the reason the Pre hasnt been released here yet is that they signed a deal with O2 and the EU wanted to look at it.
I don't hear an awful lot of buzz outside of the tech podcasts about the Pre in the UK
Like the Crackberry, nothing special. Our phones have been getting email for years
I'll be grabbing my update when I get home from work on Wednesday.
I have absolutely no interest in a touch screen phone. I hate hate hate writing on them. I know the Pre has the qwerty thing but I'm still not sold.
I wonder how long it'll take someone to produce an iPhone compatible wireless keyboard? A mini version of this
my samsong pixon has a qwerty option for typing too and i find it so much easier than the normal texting mode, but some of my friends hate it, i think it's all about preference. However i've only got this phone because of it's camera :)
HTC Touch Pro 2
Don't have to use the touch screen - has a full qwerty keyboard.
Looks like the teams have decided to turn the screw. I guess we can expect all sorts of complaints between now and Friday.
When I get the iPhone, I'm gonna keep my old SE phone in my bag just for it's great Carl Zeiss lens camera
It'll be an interesting week leading up to Friday
If that's the case, I don't like the chances of this being resolved by then unless Max gets deposed by then.
Does anyone know when the TomTom app will come out for the iPhone?
so does the Pre though. Still not interested in touching the screen the rest of the time :D
*awaits teams complaint that the FIA flag is 2cm too big at silverstone*
It could get very sill, but that's more down to max's management style than anything else.
they said autumn time didn't they?
*silly
I'm going to cry. Seriously. SORT IT OUT, F1.
Seconded.
I'm glad i'm not around for most of this week. I can just get back on Saturday/Sunday and see what the score is, rather than chasing the crap each day
Not sure, I think the official line is "coming soon"
I wonder how many other people aren't booking their Australia tickets because of the mess. The Aus GP Corp must be freaking out at their lack of sales.
for all we know, it might STILL not be resolved by then. or worse...
Its not that bad...
In fact i think this is a debate that has been needed for a while, as long as the teams dont blink, i think the sport will be all the better
But at what price? Is it really worth it? Especially for the fans?
Good, just checked the weather for next weekend at Silverstone, looks like it's going to be dry.
If it stops Bernie from making f1 the grand tour of tilke graveyards, then yes.
Rubbish
7 day forecasts are notoriously inaccurate, I hope it remains dry though
Even if it all gets settled thats still going to happen
Wayyyyy too earlier to tell. Weather on thursday said expect rain on Saturday but it was gorgeous yesterday.
I'd pick that than no F1 at all. And at the rate things are going, that cannot be discounted.
And Amy makes a good point there.
Is there a debrief show tonight
nope
Nope. Will have one next week.
Nope.
Nope
That answer your question? ;)
ok thanks
what about a f1 minute, was there one yesterday
Thanks
yep
Top Gear starts next week though?
I think sports need to be run for the interest of their competitiors, thats not to say it should be run by their competitors.
When this happens, the incentive to put on a better show is far greater, look at the premier league and the NFL. At the moment the sport is being exploited by Bernie financially, and its fulfilling Max's dream to be a politician which he couldn't do because of his father. The fans are just pawns, not customers in the game at the moment
interesting
i can see there may be a few people asking this tonight.. if we had something like a fact byte fact box mr and mrs c could put a notice in that... lol :D
I argree
Wonder if the debrief will revert to it's 'after Top Gear' slot?
good idea
another good idea
F1 Minute is taking the weekend off. Not expected but there is no news anyway.
As in 8pm or 9pm?
Why am I still awake considering its 3.30am and I have only slept for 2 hours since 3pm on Saturday? I'm gonna be tired at work tomorrow :(
We are thinking probably before.
kool
Tennis?
I like that idea more
nope. not doing anything productive at all.
Would that mean 6?
7 - 8 then
properly less risky after top gear, there is a chance of run over
11pm is too late really.
Sleep is good, try some ;)
If you stay up late enough, tomorrow stops existing. :)
the problem is it becomes today :(
Agreed. I think some of us have what's called a job.
...nope, me neither.
Kinda needs a 2 hour slot to finish before Top Gear, i would have thought
Mrs C, you have Graph spam on your drop. It hurts the eyes...
its been today for 3 and a half hours I guess. And my alarm goes off in 4 more :D
Might take a half day at work and come home and nap. No wonder I'm nocturnal now.
Probably nothing will have changed by then. If Max makes a decision itwill be appealed and go to court. The teams are playing harder than they have since the early 80s so they are not going to concede much. We could end up with another fudge and a 2 week consultation period or something equally indecisive
Will probably start at 6pm.
Thanks Nick. We're not home yet, will sort asap.
You believe a British weather forecast a week ahead??
Today only starts with the sun!
I do like the sound of earlier debrief :D
It needs a report to drop.io/page owner button doesn't it?
What about those days when I go to sleep and then wake up when its dark? Do those days not exist? Silly winter.
Mr C: can u write a app for the ipod touch so i can live comment from it
speaking of Top Gear, how are they going to top last season.
Last season had Mika. MIKA.
Not a great market though, really
does any one live comment on top gear
Probably
There will be an F1 championship of some kind. The top teams want t race. They simply don't want the hassle and risk of a breakaway but they equally don't want Max knee jerking all over the place. At some point they have to decide what is the lesser of two evils and pick that.
I've done drinking games :D
Vietnam special was my favourite
Go to the Realtime Doohickey on you iPod Touch and save it as a favourite to your home screen. The icon will be the little SPC logo. Closest thing to an SPC app at the moment.
That's kinda what the realtime doohickey is for.
That was also fantastic.
thanks well try it
What a great idea. You should suggest that
From experience, I'd say it was pretty accurate too
Statues on mopeds and all that! :D
Agreed. Can't believe no-one's thought of that before.
You made it back safely. Phew!
Nope, they're still out. The danger of being outside continues :P
I agree with whoever said the LCLT new comment noise sounded like scissors
They are commenting from "The Outside"
Eek!
I think I might spend the first episode looking at James May and being angry at him for not coming to Australia so I had to put up with the tool from Top Gear Australia as third host at Top Gear Live.
We will be infected!
Even on a Mac? :D
That is like waking up on Monday and thinking it is Sunday. It only makes it worse when you find out
Its not that kind of infection, its far worse...
Real Bugs can't be debugged
I look away, and 45 comments just like that. :P
Anyhoo, off to bed for me. Night, everyone. :)
G'night Journeyer
Night
Well, that went all 'tumbleweeds'
I know i was going to post to see if anyone was left, but i didnt want to wake the dead...
Maybe it's dinner time
The cricket is on, but last time i posted about it their was a dearth of fans, so it cant be that
The outside must have infected worse than i thought
if you're bored, i've posted some of the photos i took yesterday on my flickr
If anyone uses facebook, they have a new username thing which is first come first serve http://www.facebook.com/username/
Cheers Lou, will looksy now
oooh.. awesome...
I got bored of Facebook but have been wondering if I should nab a name
Oo photos
Hands up everyone who is here and hasn't said anything in the last ten minutes
Squirrel is amazing.. i need one
I see a photo of clive/tim/andy/*insert name until he responds* guarding buckingham palace :D
We're back now.
We were worried
it was so tame, it almost walked up to this little boy in the park, so cute :)
:D hahaha
Phew!
Welcome back to the safe zone :P
i'm pleased you're back safely :)
Nice pics Lou
They're nonchalant if they think they may get food
Lock the door before outside can get in
:D
You said you kind of liked it last time you went outside.
Note to self : Whenever it looks sunny, always take an umbrella.
LOOOOOOL
you must be drenched!!
That's what worries me. I think its like drugs. Seems like fun and you think you can control it and only do it when you want but before you know it you will have to be outside all the time and tink people who live on the net are weird.
Whenever I go to Croft I get drenched. As the old saying goes, it doesn't rain at Croft, its a bloomin monsoon
I saw the first 2 races and it looks like amazing sunshine, then they said it was starting to rain, i turned back on for the third one and it was monsoon
Anyone think McNish is having a subtle dig at Franck here?
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/picture-5-png
Everything up to the Clio's was sun. Then it started to drizzle during the Ginetta Juniors and before the Porsche's it started to properly rain big style.
That third race was insane
That's Wurz and Franck not McNish
McNish took the photo
From McNish's Autosport snaps.
I assumed it was from McNish's photos?
I see
I said to my dad that I was amazed it wasn't red flagged. After one lap you knew the safety car would come straight back out. Everytime you thought it was easing off it came back even worse.
I'm going to have to watch the support races this week, Ginetta juniors in the rain must have been hilarious
It wasn't raining, was more spitting, if that. Watch the Second race for the Porsches, that was the first torrential one.
Other than the Rain... good day?
Ah of course, loved it.
For sure?
:D
Yep.
Have I missed owt today apart from Le Mans?
nope
We confirmed what distinguished a jumper from a jersey, earlier
It was groundbreaking
Since today has been short on f1 news it should really be highlighted in tomorrow's daily so everyone will know
Wow, that is amazing.
The difference is that you don't get jumper cows apparently
I still dont understand if the cows wear them, or you use their 'wool'
Now that's just silly, cows don't have wool
They obviously wear them!
What about the one that jumped over the Moon?
Andy has a point, has that blown the definition?
NASA dont comment on speculation of such missions having taken place
:D
Hehe.
it was probably delayed
It would need a jumper. It gets chilly once you get up to the moon
Agreed. I still don’t know how he did it, TBH. Lorenzo doesn’t, either. {Comment #100}
I didn't see that pass coming, but it looked like Valentino saw a new way round the final turn and didn't let on until the last lap. At that point he set himself up to take a tighter entry (compensating with a wider exit). Normally drivers wouldn't do that because it puts them in a lousy position come the end of the straight. However, the last lap ends before the end of the straight is reached. Clever Valentino took this into account and noted, as a consequence, that the radically different line would work. The bonus was that he could hit the brakes much later because his apex was that much further down the road than Lorenzo's.
A combination of surprise and a need to change his line slightly meant that Jorge had no chance of taking advantage of Valentino's wider exit in the short time left to do so.
Anyone watching the cricket? .. Its pretty tense
did you just say cricket and tense?
I hate it when the clapping wakes me up when I'm dozing on the couch
No. Cricket should be banned.
*eek*
I'm scared to raise my hand now.
I would be too!
Cricket is like Apple, dont do it
Let's not go down that route ;)
Its too late, I have a big stack of tickets on my desk....
It's amazing how often drivers don't take the position of the finishing line into consideration. Of course some people go a bit over the top. The Magny Cours finishing line used to be on the exit of the last corner. Literally right on the exit. Senna worked out that he didn't actually need to make it round the corner so on his final banzai quali lap he turned in as fast as he could knowing that he was going to bury the car in the wall on the exit. Made a right mess of it but it was the fastest lap. Next year the finishing line was moved.
Amazing! I am in awe of Senna
Nonononono, he means Bruno Senna, you are not in awe of Bruno Senna
No I mean Ayrton
Bruno did it in GP2 last year
You crash on purpose to get an extra tenth and i am in awe of you, no matter what your name
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5dBKLsx5eg
I didn't know that.
That was a mistake though rather than doing it on purpose like Ayrton
LMAO at Star Trek Communicator App
The last corner used to be a tight right and the pit wall was the exit
it was less awe inspiring, more stupidity
oh yeah, lol, he didnt mean to do that
And if he did, then bruno will be a good replacement for a certain Mr Piquet ;)
i'm not sure Piquet means to do it ;)
NEED!
Anyone watching the Confederations Cup at the moment?
The current match is a bit.....one-sided.
I'm watching the cricket and its killing me...
it is cricket, thats what it does for you
India need 19 of 6 balls... Gahhhhh
i have NO idea what that means
Not to worry. It means you're quite normal
:)
Doesn't matter... England win! and i didn't die, although my heart rate is going mental
Woo, beat India. Impressive.
I didn't think it was that close.
Oh, it was!
Taxidermy meets computing
The “Mighty Dead” mouse
you guys are really getting into this “outside” thing.
Yes. Seems to take a lot of planning though, at least if you want to spend more than a couple of hours there...
wow, that is alot of planning, i think i'll stay indoors
thats gross
Have posted the first entry into a little multi entry thing I’m doing looking at various aspects of loyalty within the world of F1, if anyone’s interested :) {Comment #213}
I would certainly be interested in seeing more of these - loyalty in F1 is not a topic written about very often but it's an important one...
FOTA have complained that Alan Donnely was performing his role as Max’s agent at the Turkish grand prix, where he was supposed to be an impartial steward. {Comment #244}
I thought everyone knew he wasn't impartial already?
They did, doesn't mean that they cant point out that the FIA is doing something wrong just to hit them...
I take it everyone is dead after Le Mans?
Seems like it
I'm sort of here
Anything to discuss?
Not really
A few dipping in and out probably finding it weird that they have a Sunday where they should be doing something else but can't figure out what :)
Well I'm going to watch some video. Not sure what yet.
Yup.
I just got up. This is probably the latest I slept in. It's 2:00 PM over here.
I cant function after the cricket.. But hamilton seems to have been taking half the countries journo's around the track, first Jake, then i read about it in the telegraph yesterday, and now James allen has been out http://allenonf1.wordpress.com/2009/06/14/hamilton-buries-the-hatchet-and-the-throttle/
I've not had to do any revision, and there hasn't been any f1 on, i haven't had a Sunday like this for weeks. i'm not sure what to do...
I was thinking the same, have quite a few downloads to catch up on
Suddenly the place comes to life!
I am working on a blog post.
The real world is a scary place...
Mad man, Max's man, and F1's newest Steward has weighed in on the War...
http://www.thenational.ae/article/20090614/SPORT/706139868/1004
OK then, answer me this - if FOTA starts a breakaway competition, does it have to be under the FIA's regulation? I'm guessing not, if Le Mans can be outside the FIA
*awaits teams complaint that the FIA flag is 2cm too big at silverstone*
It could get very sill, but that’s more down to max’s management style than anything else. {Comment #377}
I think there is scope for making it sillier.
To register our frustration with current FIA behaviour, how about we post some nuts to our nearest national FIA Council representative?
Some people did something similar when CBS attempted to cancel the show "Jericho". Twenty tons of nuts later, CBS got the hint that these were neither casual complainants nor few in number. They commissioned another season, kept their viewers happy and the problem was resolved.
I'm tagging this campaign #fianut on Twitter, if anyone's interested.
I suppose it doesn't have to be
Not necessarily, however if it is sanctioned by another body they will have to win the national organisations over to allow a foreign body to organise a race in their country. Much like when the Americans raced at rockingham
But Jericho got cancelled 7 episodes into Season 2
Why not just send them to max himself in Paris!
Much better
We could send metal nuts, as in nuts and bolts instead?
Nah, get the locals down first, then the foundations of the FIA is dooomed
There has been talk for months that the American Automobile Association (AAA) might be the governing body. Even though AAA is a member of the FIA (their largest) they oversee NASCAR and the IRL without Max bothering them.
It makes sense, because of how the rules are set up here in the states, the FOTA association can govern their own sport so to speak instead of having an outside organization tell them what to do.
What a load of garbage. The reason there is a dispute is because Max wouldn't work with the teams. Do these people think this propaganda is convincing anyone that the FIA are right and FOTA are wrong
Le mans comes under the FIA. The FIA cannot refuse to sanction a championship or the EU will rip them to shreds but there is no reason for them to be involved in the rules or administration
But the FIA bit of Le Mans is safety, like you say it has nothing to do with technical regs or anything like that.
It is an interesting approach but I don't think there is time to make it work. You would need to send them all to Max at Place de la Concorde.
wow, that is alot of planning, i think i’ll stay indoors {Comment #565}
The worrying thing is that there are also two special shopping trips to do...
...and it looks like I've appointed myself manager of the "FIA Nuts" campaign without really trying. Perhaps the wrong week to do so...
Or mass email of Nuts
Yes and that is the only involvement they or someone similar needs to have in F1.
Surely anyone can set up a motor race without any involvement of the FIA at all?
Or Nutters. Works either way, just annoy him.
OK then, answer me this – if FOTA starts a breakaway competition, does it have to be under the FIA’s regulation? {Comment #585}
To be inscribed on the FIA International Calender (and thus be able to access most of the world's racing drivers) the series has to accept FIA regulations on safety, or close enough so that the FIA believes the same level of safety can be maintained.
Beyond that, a breakaway series could theoretically make its own regulations.
New blog post
A Grand North Yorkshire Day Out
A selection of photos from Croft.
What recourse does the FIA have against a driver who races in a non FIA event?
Physical nuts would have a much greater effect. It is like one of these Mark Thomas campaigns. If you can't overpower your opponent you should out-weird them. When Ian Lang was Postmaster General and therefore head of the post office he wanted to get rid of the universal postal rate so that if you lived somewhere remote postage would cost you more and if you lived in a city it would cost less. At one of his gigs mark Thomas gave out Lang's address and asked people to send him any free offers they found in junk mail because junk mail companies would have been paying almost nothing for postage so we would have got a lot more of it. Almost immediately he started getting sackfuls of mail everyday because peoplewould sign him up for canteens of cutlery of 14 day approval etc and he had to send all of them back and cancel the order.
He went ballistic and told the post office they had to sort his real mail from all th garbage he was getting but because they knew that the loss of the universal postal rate meant a lot of job losses they pointed out that they couldn't interfere with the mail as that was against the law.
The proposal to get rid of the universal postal rate was dropped quietly.
Sometimes weird campaigns work.
Not really, it would be very difficult to get it insured, and it could well be illegal. Much like a boxing match not sanctioned by the BBBC is just a fight... and therefore illegal
There needs to be a sanctioning body who can license drivers and circuits etc otherwise there is no way you could insure the event
nice photos :)
I like the random tyre
They can withdraw his icense
Ah so it's Health and Safety. Can't the HSE do the job then?
It was strange that it was left there for a lap and no Safety Car was brought out.
Becomes a bit more complicated for an International series I guess
Not really they are an enforcement not an advisory body.
But Jericho got cancelled 7 episodes into Season 2 {Comment #589}
True. This was because CBS said that they wanted a bigger audience in return for giving Jericho another season, which in the end it didn't receive. The point, however, is that using a method of protest that's a little more difficult to do than an online petition can have a major effect on the thinking of the powers-that-be.
It will take some weeks for the campaign to take full effect (which means it almost certainly won't affect the immediate entry list problem), but it should be worth it. Especially if the target is to unseat Max in favour of better leadership (in which case we have until November).
And if the powers-that-be attach conditions to behaving properly... ...we can cross that bridge when we get to it.
They would not be classed as competent persons. Besides they would not want to get involved.
OK, so FIA sets rules for safety, including deciding where and who is fit to race. Makes sense to me.
EU law says that the FIA cannot refuse to sanction any event or series that meets the safety rules and uses drivers who are fit to race.
Fair summary?
Why not just send them to max himself in Paris! {Comment #590}
If you're willing to put up with the additional expense, then mail away - that plan would also work, and I think it could work in tandem :)
I can see the logic if it is aimed at Max's re-election
Are you suggesting the HSE is incompetent. Oh wait....
Yep
Pretty much, although I would decorate it with asterisks :D
buttt, an event sanctioned by the FIA is not an FIA championship? am i right?
i.e a club race is run under FIA (well MSA but FIA rules) rules, but its not a FIA championships
Easier to organise if there's one address to target
I think for it to work there has to be nuisance value to Max and the FIA people need to understand the level of feeling
The events are run by clubs like BRDC, BRSCC, SMRC etc
Off to watch a DVD in bed and get some sleepies now, an 11 hour shift at work tomorrow leaves me hoping tmy head doesn't fall off and they have sufficient amounts of bread to provide toast top-ups in the staff room ;)
Night all!
Hehe. So if my summary is right, FOTA can more or less do what the hell it likes in terms of a breakaway and there's nothing Max or Bernie can do about it?
yeah, but they run under MSA "rules" do they not? and MSA rules are done by FIA?
Night
Ciao sir
Max... not so much (I expect if they did breakaway he would be voted out in october anyway)
Bernie... Thats another matter
apart from sueing their ass's
Night Lukeh, I think you should try some toasted alternatives to bread
For variety's sake
Night Lukeh
Night Lukeh
Yes so longas they have approved clerk of the course etc
night Lukeh
FIA licenses the MSA as the uK authority and it licenses everything from tracks, officials, drivers etc
i forgot my original question. darn.
but yeah, i think i understand what i meant
Or mass email of Nuts {Comment #600}
Snail-mail of nuts, perhaps. If we're going to out-wierd them like Steven suggested, that would be the extreme.
Mass email will probably land in the spam bin and therefore not achieve any notice from the recipient FIA official.
Mail in phots of nuts or for those wishing to splash out, actual nuts
As apposed to sending food and them thinking it was some illegal substance and then you getting arrested ;)
Actually, any kind of nut would really make the point :D
That's what I meant - i.e. a FOTA competition would meet the FIA's minimum requirements in order to be sanctioned.
I was ignoring the legal aspect, that's a whole different can of worms.
Not food... Metal!
ooooh, those types of nuts
Ah so it’s Health and Safety. Can’t the HSE do the job then? {Comment #612}
No. The FIA would argue it doesn't have the necessary experience of circuit racing safety evaluation to figure out the risks (and that a national body cannot properly judge tracks spread across the world anyway) and would therefore insist on doing its own evaluation. I'm not saying it would have to write the rules, but it would have to be satisfied that the series would be no more dangerous than if it was running it.
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/chrome-hex-nuts-jpg
OK, so FIA sets rules for safety, including deciding where and who is fit to race. Makes sense to me.
EU law says that the FIA cannot refuse to sanction any event or series that meets the safety rules and uses drivers who are fit to race.
Fair summary? {Comment #618}
I think so.
ooooh
Bear in mind these people are French. It needs to be one kind of nut or they won't understand
an event sanctioned by the FIA is not an FIA championship? am i right? {Comment #624}
The FIA only gives the right to a series to call itself an FIA championship if the FIA makes all the regulations for it (either directly or via its member organisations). If part of the regulatory framework is independent, then it's not an FIA championship. However if the partly-independent series received approval for its safety regulations from the FIA, then it is sanctioned by the FIA despite not being an FIA championship.
I have videos of Le Mans in FM3:
http://www.virtualr.net/forza-motorsport-3-le-mans-videos/
Max isn't
thats awesome
The people who open the mail are and they needto understand this is one campaign and nt that the world has started all sorts of different things that happen to have the same name in English. No doubt he gets a degree of hate mail that is filtered before he sees his mail
Piq tweet (see what i did there?)
Congratulations to Peugeot for the victory in Le Mans 24 hours today. I really hope I can drive this race next year
Has he seen the future or something?
Should have been
I really hope I can attempt drive a race anywhere next year
okay, i need some sleep, i'm shattered and have school tomorrow (boo!! :( ) night all! x
night lou
It'll be over soon.
I'm trying to write a GP2 primer. Thinking this wasn't the best time to do it, especially with nuts on the brain...
From fake Piquet
[email protected] I already practice for next job "would you like fries with that?"
Night Lou
Steven, have you seen this?

That's new to me. I was given a freebie program a few years ago and it i incredible what you can see if you know what to look for. Most of the plantes are visible at some time.
I'm going to bed. Good night, everyone.
G'night Alianora
sidepodspace update.
NASA will make a final decision on when to launch the shuttle. If they are happy with the repairs the shuttle will be launched on Wednsday and the LRO/LCROSS launch will be re-scheduled. If they are not sure the shuttle will be good to go they will launch the LRO/LCROSS as planned
Good night Alianora
