Some important things happened yesterday in the world of Formula 1, but if you were anything like me, you were busy hiding out in the daily thread thinking happy thoughts. Sadly, they have run out now, and it is back to the politics in F1. Thankfully, it doesn't matter because it is Franck Day!! Here are some of the things we're talking about, not including Franck:
- The FIA have provided a bit of an overview of the three new teams who are hoping to make their name in F1. Naturally, although these are confirmed teams, it's still worth taking their entry with a pinch of salt because anything could happen at this point. Still, if you want to find out who Campos, Manor and USF1 really are, it's worth taking a look.
- Jake Humphrey has been out and about mingling with F1 drivers, and in his latest blog post he discusses what it's like being driven by, and driving, them around Silverstone. Mostly, everyone looked pretty scared!
- It's been a dangerous week so far, as we've had two sporting injuries - Franck only went and broke his leg before the biggest race of the year, and Ollie hurt himself in Monaco. You can find out more about these and other Sidepodinjuries on the wiki.
That'll do it for now. I suppose all politics talk will return to the daily thread for today, but that's okay because I'll be hiding in the Franck thread! I'll see you in the comments.
Franck Thread? Erm, there is a race going on y'know. ;)
Don;t wanna spoil it for you but... it's the 13th June ;)
Doh, that'll confuse the live threads... again!
We have 2 12th s of June
ooops. she's doing well today. earlier it was yesterday's f1minute today.
gimmie 1 min.
i do proclaim this day the 13th.
*smashes champaaaange bottle*
hip hip!
hurray!!
yay! :P
Time for sleepies... big day ahead :) night all!
okay, lou needs sleep, busy day tomorrow. night all! x
christ, now you're exhibiting borg like behaviour.
:D lol one last thing...can someone cheer on Ant for me tomorrow until i get back? or will christine kill me/them?
nah. i'll do it for ya. night lou.
yay :) am going up to london tomorrow so will hopefully have lots of lovely piccys to show you all :P
cool. did i miss why/where?
nope, i haven't said. but am going to meet lukeh and probably just go and take some pictures on south bank and stuff (may go to the ferrari store too :P) should be a lovely day.
ahh, cool. that explains why you both have a big day ahead. btw i know this really great pub near...
have a brilliant day both of ya. ping us if you get chance x
will do ;) night! x
Free Wifi at the Apple Store ;)
legend.
Well, it's near the Ferrari store, they might pop in...
Haha :D
Just grabbing the dictaphone app for my iPhone so if need be I can make some recordings while at Silverstone. ;)
You'll have Voice Memo in the v3.0 software. Available from 17th June
Just grabbing the dictaphone app for my iPhone so if need be I can make some recordings while at Silverstone. {Comment #23}
My PDA can be a dictaphone, but I'm going to struggle to get enough charge in it for what I was going to do text blog-wise...
i (hearts) 3.0 :)
Aha, cool. Wonder what record quality will be like.
I just want the new OS for TomTom. Hells yeah! :D
Looks like there was supposed to be a TomTom app in development this time last year, but maybe they held out on releasing it and focused on working it for the new OS.
The main reason there isn't a TomTom app yet is because the v2.0 SDK terms explicitly forbid turn by turn navigation software. v3.0 allows such applications, but you have to supply your own map data.
There's also going to be a TomTom car kit for the iPhone with cradle to stick to the windscreen, car charger, external speakers and a GPS booster. Sounds good to me.
Yep. It will sell many many copies and many many iPhones.
Hang on, I'll grab my pen, I'll draw you one. It's got to be an improvement on the map my SatNav has.
I'm getting one as soon as it's available. Will be a massive help when I start driving.
Hehe. That's not quite what I meant.
I think he means you have to program your own routes into the iPhone.
I suggest you try driving without one first. You don't want to become another Sat-Nav disaster statistic. Sometimes they are wrong.
I'd only use it at first to help me start remembering important routes i.e. getting to work and back, to the city, Dad's house, etc. Once I've done them a few times with TomTom and learnt them, I'll only use it for things like long trips and places I've not been to before.
I agree. The best use of SatNav is a mixture of route planning using an actual map, and then taking advantage of the technology when you're within a couple of miles. I've been caught out a few times with various systems.
I use my TomTom to tell me what the speed limit is and where the speed cameras are :)
sidepodspace update
We are go for launch. They have started filling Endeavour's petrol tank
It takes 3 hours to fill the external fuel tank with 500,000 gallons (1.89 million litres) of liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen. Bet they get a lot of Tesco points.
Heh. :P
Good evening/morning
Good morning to ya. :P Rather quiet tonight - everyone getting tons of sleep ahead of Le Mans?
I guess so.
This week has been utterly crazy. But I'm guessing this is nothing compared to what we'll see next week. :O
Max isn't going to sit and wait for the new deadline now he will have to retaliate to the manufacturers association press release from today. I wouldn't be surprised if we got something from him tomorrow.
Saturday? It's possible, but I think Mosley will think this through. If I were to guess, he won't talk until Monday.
But LDM won't wait that long. Apparently, he has a press-con before the start of Le Mans...
You just know he is going to have every microphone in Le Mans stuck in his face and will milk it for all it is worth. There is no point in him saying anything on Sunday because it will be lost behind the result so if he has something to say it has to be tomorrow
Yup, definitely agree. And you know he'll really go for it.
What do you think are Max's chances of getting re-elected this time round?
That depends what Nick Craw has been doing since the vote of confidence. If he has been seriously campaigning then Max is toast.
Does he play any role in the WMSC? I don't think so, does he?
No. I think he is not on any of the influential committees
A shame. But even if FOTA wrote to the WMSC, will they call for an extraordinary meeting? Isn't that solely Max's call?
Max controls the WMSC. The only thing that can happen at the FIA that woudld allow sense to break out is a vote of confidence on Max. If he lost that then his deputy gets the job until an election can be organised.
So why would FOTA write to the WMSC, then? Is it to incite a coup?
I guess to show that they want to stay in the championship and they are only threatening to leave because they are being forced into it.
The Yankees finally won so now I can get a few hours sleep before the launch tomorrow assuming NASA don't screw it up.
Over the Mets, too. :D I actually like it that you watch American sports too! Did you watch Orlando choke last night?
I fell asleep before the end. I saw the third quarter where the Lakers turned it around and the start of the fourth. I only really got into basketball this year. I always found it boring before. I have watched the NFL since the early 80s with the odd gap and MLB for about 7 or 8 years.
I really am going to bed now since it is after 4am and I am not Amy.
Right - night Steven. :)
Hello everyone. Just got back from shopping. I am stocked up and ready to go for 24 straight of LeMans.
Night Steve.
Please don't mention the NBA. The league is dead to me.
Blaming the refs?
I am a Sonics fan. David Stern and his allies stole our team and broke my heart.
Oh... that's why. Well, Rashard is in Orlando now. Had a nightmare of a game last night, though...
I could see that coming. Every playoff game he played for Seattle, he would choke. Drove me nuts every playoff game when Ray-Ray or Gary Payton would be working their butts off and Rashard would disappeared.
I read an ESPN article where they said the Sonics fans were saying, "See! I told you so! I knew this would happen!" :P
I see someone else reads Bill Simmons.
OH YES! You knew where I read that, eh? :D Brilliant writer, he is. :)
He is a great writer. Get's on the soapbox sometimes and is a Boston homer but I like him anyways.
Best bit of the last article: "You have to foul." Repeat. :D
Then you would get this... isn't Brawn the ultimate example of the Patrick Ewing Theory?
If you're referring to Honda, then abso-freakin-lutely. :D
I swore that I would never follow the NBA again after what they did to Seattle. Simmons dragged me back in.
T-minus six hours.
Morning all. Too early for a Saturday. Boo.
Tis rather. I've only been up 2 hours and I'm 9 hours ahead of you.
Sidepodspace News - the shuttle has been cancelled.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/8098462.stm
The astronauts didn't even get their suits on. Boo. They'll decide when to reschedule today.
Morning! Two Boos already too :(
I've been up since 6:30 for some reason I just awoke!
Ooops, I didn't notice. Erm... yay!
Car = garage today. Hoping they are better than Ferrari mechanics.
Note: If car still has fuel hose attached, don't drive off whatever the lollypop man says ;)
Also just thinking if Mr C is coming along this will be a good opportunity for him to purchase this Milky Bar that he needs. I know he doesn't often go near "shops".
Stockpile them for the future :)
Katherine has been away for a few days... but is back now. I have bought her a box of Lindor Dark Chocolate. She'll know it's not for me as I don't like chocolate. I have hidden it in plain sight in the fridge. I wonder how long it will take her to notice?
She was home all of last night, but I made dinner.
You need to ask her to get you something from the fridge... she'll be all 'sigh, why can't you get it yourself, yay, chocolates!'
Good plan! I'll implement that when she gets up :) Project "yay, chocolates!" :)
You don't like chocolate? Reminds me of this. Just with chocolate.
:)
My grandmother is obsessed with chocolate and used to give my brother and I loads and loads as children. She gave us so much that we were both put off it for life.
Ah yes, that is the exact story of why to this day I cannot eat Cadbury Creme Eggs.
Both of our girlfriends are very happy when she gives us chocolate now though (although she gives us far less than she used to).
I am considering leaving the house to go and buy some now. Damn my suggestible nature!
Outside?
I can still see my house from the shop, it helps calm the fear.
Any news from the Le Mans warm up as I got up late
I think I am going to go all Lukeh-esque and have some toast.
I had toast and marmite for dinner. Would highly recommend.
I can see that despite moving to Australia you have not betrayed your NZ roots!
I hiss at Vegemite. Horrible stuff.
Morning all. Warm and sunny here and the Legends support race is on. Lister Jag in the lead.
Have put new battery in dictaphone for the occasion.
Reading this has made me hungry. Popping upstairs for an overpriced and understuffed baguette.
Argh! Not open yet. Must be on strike.
This is hateful. Woke up with a slightly thick head and unable to contemplate breakfast; am now fine and totally Hank Marvin. Someone, somewhere, must have cake or something.
In other news, a yellow Ferrari is dropping oil all over the track.
Heh. Over the price of supplies?
Hmmm... Where did that come from? A bit like morning sickness?
Ooooh - must check to see if I can watch this.
A few pressions, I think. That was my impression.
Didn't see this fellow outside the toilet yesterday:
http://www.manipef1.com/news/articles/9464/
Must have been hiding under a desk.
:D Heh. Prodrive and Lola must be massively disappointed, though. But if things will go I think the way they'll go (i.e. NOT a split), I don't think they'll get any other chance to get in. How do you read the situation?
It’s a very complicated situation and the negotiations are ongoing, with a proliferation of wheels within wheels, so trying to forecast an outcome is rather like trying to predict the territorial settlement of the Treaty of Versailles…
Ooooh, nice comparison. But... didn't the Treaty of Versailles collapse spectacularly?
Well, Alsace-Lorraine is still in France…
:D True. There's just a small matter of the Second World War. ;)
so, ummm, i lost christine... but all is well, she's gonna walk home.
oops
what?! naughty, naughty... :P
the garage wasn't where i thought it was.
one of the strangest messages to see on sidepodcast when you load up.
Ooooh - They've just mentioned that David Richards and Martin Birrane will be interviewed sometime during the 24 Hours, in particular, about their failed F1 bids...
riiiight, then. there has to be a good story behind this. ;)
the iPhone can't save the day?
i don't have one :(
my guess they'll probably say what they said yesterday, and what we're all realizing, yesterdays list is a vague idea of what we'll see next year but flexible as any FIA opinion.
how vague is vague, i wonder? hmmm...
i do know there's not enough milky bar in the world.
good excuse ;)
heheh. and Tuesday is but a few days away. ;)
A certain WEBSITE has done that already, so no need to wait.
The Milkybars are on "me"! Literally.
You never know, they might say something new. ;)
:D Will you be watching the 24 Hours with us, Amy?
the press releases are being cowritten by the legal team, for positioning purposes. until i see cars on a grid at the first race in 2010 i doubt i'll believe much. besides, i'm moving to the USA and supporting the N sport ;)
The N sport? I thought you meant N Technologies the entry... ;)
Watching it for the first time ever, and so is my brother :D
YAY! :D
I slept all day in preparation ;)
I slept for most of today, too. :D
you know what i mean. after i half read that article containing the discussions of the sports i figured why not - it'll be easier to get coverage than f1. is on at a better time of day and hopefully they have the same sort of graphics as indy - with live timing you can download as a csv file, and the camera work for the pitstops was amazing. same types of technology just different place and different people. i have no idea ;)
i had jackhammers outside my apartment at 8am :(
you definitely have no idea. ;)
Please stop mentioning food! I'm still absolutely Hank.
You're in Italy - the race for you starts in the afternoon. For Amy and I, it starts in the middle of the night...
:D
Oil-incontinent yellow Ferrari won the support race. No carnage at Arnage.
You're a poet and you probably know it
Indeed - seemed rather orderly, actually...
it's still a 24 hour race ;) mind you, I'm going out with footballers tonight so i may never be heard from again.
Does Arnage rhyme with race? I thought it rhymed with montage?
Apparently, I went for a 2 mile walk in preparation.
carnage
ahhh. i see...
uh-oh...
See if you were to give up one of your kidneys, Mr C would have been able to get an iPhone and this probably wouldn't have happened ;)
are you guys getting the stories about eddie irvine or is it just italian media?
Silly tradition we have – uttering that statement rhyming carnage with Arnage, which does indeed rhyme with montage. Why do we do it? Unknown.
no idea what that's about. do tell. :)
Too true. It must be my fault somehow!
Don't mention that man's name in civilised company.
Hehe. :D
:D Irvine?
i think i'm going to have to...
there are two stories
apparently he said ferrari was a flop but it was Schumacher who got us the victories.
story 2 - something about a nightclub altercation or something with the son of the mayor of milano or somewhere.
He's exaggerating it somewhat - there were hundreds of mechanics and engineers working flat out - and they won titles before and after Michael. That said, it's not entirely untrue...
goodness - isn't he too old to get into that kind of trouble?
i'm just giving you the headline cos i haven't made the time to read the article - but it looks like a direct quote.
yeah i thought so, but i got eddie irvine and eddie jordan mixed for a few seconds and that was even funnier...
eddie jordan in a nightclub - now there's a hilarious thought. :D
Morning All!!!
Le Mans is finally here!!!
Anyone watching the classic legends race before the main event?
Great Le Mans documentary on motors tv at the moment
I am crashing already and it hasn't even started. Time to have the first of many coffees.
i've now read the article and if i've got my facts right the nightclub incident - was over the ex girlfriend of irvine being with the mayor's kid. punches were thrown and i think irvine is suing for physical damages. anyway, enough gossip from the italian dailies. unless i head to see what today's ferrari statement is...
LDM press conference in an hour...
Oooh. Will it be televised? Will you be there?
No, and yes – but off to get food now.
Katherine wants to make cake today...
What cake should she make?
She's thinking carrot cake but I know that was unpopular last time.
Remember no chocolate
What are the options?
Lemon, I like lemon.
Hey everybody.
coffee cake!
make thisbanana cake
hi rg
Well I'm not sure we are really limited by anything (except chocolate). We are about to go shopping after all.
Ah Katherine doesn't like Coffee I forgot that constraint.
Hmm. I think either Apple cake, or a big ol' classic Victoria sponge with jam and everything.
you'd better buy some buttermilk :D
:)
Katherine is now saying that she wants something that last over several days so maybe not a victoria sponge.
Gosh this is more complicated then I thought.
Lime then. No one will eat it so it will last over several days.
I'd eat it
bacon cake?
Darn. Erm, carbon fibre?
Mmmmmmmmm
Katherine did just spot Bacon Dauphenois which I want now for breakfast :)
:)
what about Ginger Cake? That could work I'm thinking
Did Project Yay Chocolate work, by the way?
Ah I'll try it now...
wow... am in the apple store... i want a mac.. macs are nice :)
lukeh says hi! :P
Yay! Hi both! Having a good day?
noooooo! You don't want one, no you don't.
But nice to see your having a good time.
yeah, tis very lovely weather in london... gosh macs are nice to type on
I was being Lukeh-esque earlier on... I had some toast!
[Lukeh] I saw a big ferrari bear :)
i want it!!!!
I just looked out of the window. Turns out it is nice weather here in London :)
we are off to south bank before i buy a mac. bye all! x
Have fun :)
am i missing something?
We got clouds. Bah.
Lou and Lukeh have met up in London to take photos and ogle Macs :)
This is the point where you should be saying 'You don't need a Mac'
i wasnt refering to the mac ;)
oh yeah? ;)
nuff said 8-)
I am buying a hat as we speak.
is it a franck hat?
made of nachos?
hahaha :)
:)
I might marry Pedro Lamy or one of his relatives. I quite fancy being Amy Lamy.
:)
Hehehe.
lucky females, you guys get to keep your surname or change it, we get stuck with ours :/
Hahaha! I think I get what you mean, Jon. Hehe. ;)
You can change your name too. It's the same process.
i've thought "it" for along time, but i shall say no more :D
yeah, but i'd probably get frowned at profusely
I disagree. "In Italy" is not my last name.
Do you think R Glock would be starting to stalk a bit too much though?
Hahahahaha! I will also keep my mouth shut. :D
:D
:D
depends if you try to get your way in to the next family reunion.
In the picture your mouth is open
Fine. I'll just go like this - ;)
Hmm, true. I also realise R Glock is the exact same as RG, so...
Goodness me. The more calls I get from the garage, the further away Goodwood seems to be!
Right, must dash off to deepest darkest Northumberland, see you for the start of the race, which starts at?
We think 2pm.
Uh-oh. Something wrong with the car?
Indeed. 3 PM LMT, 2 PM BST.
Right, that be good. See ya then, then.
Mmm. Brakes and exhaust.
Yikes. That'll be a pain to get fixed...
so 1PM GMT. just trying to be confusing.
LMT? not an official time zone last time i checked!
Le Mans Time. :D
Just remembered - seeing as I'm going to be talking to Alonso and Piquet at Silverstone, just for you guys, does anyone have any questions they want me to ask them?
Not so much a pain as a price.
I'm not a car expert, bit I think they are not the best things to go wrong. I was told after my car's MOT that there was a slight play in the steering, but it was fine and nothing to worry about. Didn't stop me from panicking whenever a corner came for the rest of the day!
According to NASA there will be a delay of at least 96 hours before a launch. You can always rely on NASA.
THe cancellation is due to a leak in the gaseous hydrogen venting system outside the external fuel tank. Do NASA really not leak test stuff like this in advance??
NASA - Constantly renewing Christine's faith in the universe
Morning all btw
:D
I thought as soon as I hit post comment that I shouldn't have booed, because for me, it's good news :)
name dropper ;)
Piquet. What will you be doing in 2010?
I never trust what they say anymore. Was told after my last MOT there was a nail in the rear right. Turns out there was no nail anywhere, but the rear left did have a slow puncture from something else.
Alonso: How was Le Mans? :D
You at least want the excitement of them suiting up and the countdown getting down to just minutes. I want to see one of the launces where they pull the plug with 3 seconds to go
Speaking of which, LDM presscon should be underway by now. Stuart C is at the presscon.
You guys are going to be unemployed next year, what are you going to do with your year off?
make sure you ask them open questions so they can give an opinion other than yes or no. What do you think about? ask them about KERS, the future of F1, the drain of having to do interviews with people they've never heard of ;) Seriously Scott you've got a great opportunity and you deserve the prize. I hope you have time to enjoy yourself.
no you really don't. i think i've seen 6 seconds and i was gutted for the whole week. it's like watching a high scoring game of any sport and having it finish in a draw.
Latest update from NASA is that there will be a mission managers meeting tomorrow 2pm NASA time to assess and reschedule. The earliest date they can go on is June 17th but there is a ange conflict then because of the scheduled launch of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter/Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite.
They are going to screw this whole thing up and launch during one of the Silverstone sessions. I just knnow it.
I love how your definition of a screw up for lunch is a scheduling problem for you with f1 ;)
ask alonso about his most remember "almost victory" - the one that got away. where one thing stopped him. nothing springs to mind, but maybe he might have something...
Well you could argue that scrubbing a launch with all the added cost due to someone not leak testing a venting system that carries hydrogen is a screw up on its own. I have missed so many launches and landings due to delays shifting them into times where I can't watch that it is like they are picking on me.
then ask piquet but stop halfway and go 'oh wait'
if i were to guess, i think he'd say Hungary 2006. :)
Haha, good one.
I'll put these down in a Word document so I've got them all together.
Thanks Scott. I do have some questions in mind already.:)
;) when i was typing that question i did haev "ask them" then went back and changed it...
maybe the schedule doesn't revolve around you Steven? the universe can, just not the schedule ;) I'm pretty sure they check these things. I am so going to a launch when I'm in the US, but so hard to plan a trip when you never really know when they're going up.
You will probably need to go three times to see one launch. They are doing the first test launch of the shuttle replacement vehicle next month so there should be a load of those to see over the next few months. You may get one of those scheduled close to a shuttle launch to give you a better chance of seeing something fly.
could get expensive. i only fly first class ;)
New blog post I compiled late last night but only published this morning.
http://zerodownforce.blogspot.com/2009/06/13-unlucky-number.html
Last year and the year before, someone had designed a mashup web page with the live timing, Radio Lemans, Le Mans news, etc. Anyone know if it is available this year?
Not aware of it.Live timing at http://www.lemans.org/24heuresdumans/pages/chronos_gb.html
I suggest you switch to the race live commentary thread as a lot of us are over there
Hallo! There was a suggestion from one RF1 fan site blogger to create Formula One Fans Association, since everybody's got an association these days. So I was left with the task to test actual interest to this idea. Just go to me blog and say something. It's a shameless plug so I'm slightly ashamed but the idea sounded pretty crazy. Help me! I need to be famous.
I was born... today.
:D
evening all :)
Hey lukeh, everyone is in the Le Mans thread so you might as well join us there
evening sire, we're over on the L24 :D
oops so you are!
I've only just read that - I must be a bit slow at the moment. :D
Thanks for the mention. I feel rather embarrassed about the whole thing to be honest. But it is kinda cool to say that I've spent time in the, ahem, Princess Grace Hospital Centre, I'll 'ave you know. :)
Shame it wasn't for a racing-related injury, but probably just as well given my luck. Here I am in my hotel room in the early hours of the morning all bandaged up.
Best wishes to Franck. Last time I checked he was still in the top three. That be Nuvolari-esque, me thinks.
I suggest you try driving without one first. You don’t want to become another Sat-Nav disaster statistic. Sometimes they are wrong. {Comment #36}
Yes. Last week my family had to help a seriously lost driver who was about to try getting his seven-ton lorry plus trailer down a single-lane road due to the advice of his sat-nav. To make it worse, the lane was going the wrong way anyway...
