Some important things happened yesterday in the world of Formula 1, but if you were anything like me, you were busy hiding out in the daily thread thinking happy thoughts. Sadly, they have run out now, and it is back to the politics in F1. Thankfully, it doesn't matter because it is Franck Day!! Here are some of the things we're talking about, not including Franck:

  • The FIA have provided a bit of an overview of the three new teams who are hoping to make their name in F1. Naturally, although these are confirmed teams, it's still worth taking their entry with a pinch of salt because anything could happen at this point. Still, if you want to find out who Campos, Manor and USF1 really are, it's worth taking a look.
  • Jake Humphrey has been out and about mingling with F1 drivers, and in his latest blog post he discusses what it's like being driven by, and driving, them around Silverstone. Mostly, everyone looked pretty scared!
  • It's been a dangerous week so far, as we've had two sporting injuries - Franck only went and broke his leg before the biggest race of the year, and Ollie hurt himself in Monaco. You can find out more about these and other Sidepodinjuries on the wiki.

That'll do it for now. I suppose all politics talk will return to the daily thread for today, but that's okay because I'll be hiding in the Franck thread! I'll see you in the comments.

I just want the new OS for TomTom. Hells yeah! :D

  • Scott Woodwiss13/06/2009 at 00:00

Looks like there was supposed to be a TomTom app in development this time last year, but maybe they held out on releasing it and focused on working it for the new OS.

The main reason there isn't a TomTom app yet is because the v2.0 SDK terms explicitly forbid turn by turn navigation software. v3.0 allows such applications, but you have to supply your own map data.

There's also going to be a TomTom car kit for the iPhone with cradle to stick to the windscreen, car charger, external speakers and a GPS booster. Sounds good to me.

Hang on, I'll grab my pen, I'll draw you one. It's got to be an improvement on the map my SatNav has.

I suggest you try driving without one first. You don't want to become another Sat-Nav disaster statistic. Sometimes they are wrong.

I suggest you try driving without one first. You don't want to become another Sat-Nav disaster statistic. Sometimes they are wrong.

I'd only use it at first to help me start remembering important routes i.e. getting to work and back, to the city, Dad's house, etc. Once I've done them a few times with TomTom and learnt them, I'll only use it for things like long trips and places I've not been to before.

  • startledbunny13/06/2009 at 00:18

I suggest you try driving without one first. You don’t want to become another Sat-Nav disaster statistic. Sometimes they are wrong.

I agree. The best use of SatNav is a mixture of route planning using an actual map, and then taking advantage of the technology when you're within a couple of miles. I've been caught out a few times with various systems.

  • Andy Taylor13/06/2009 at 00:19

I use my TomTom to tell me what the speed limit is and where the speed cameras are :)

We are go for launch. They have started filling Endeavour's petrol tank

  • Steven Roy13/06/2009 at 02:15

Max isn't going to sit and wait for the new deadline now he will have to retaliate to the manufacturers association press release from today. I wouldn't be surprised if we got something from him tomorrow.

Saturday? It's possible, but I think Mosley will think this through. If I were to guess, he won't talk until Monday.

But LDM won't wait that long. Apparently, he has a press-con before the start of Le Mans...

You just know he is going to have every microphone in Le Mans stuck in his face and will milk it for all it is worth. There is no point in him saying anything on Sunday because it will be lost behind the result so if he has something to say it has to be tomorrow

What do you think are Max's chances of getting re-elected this time round?

  • Steven Roy13/06/2009 at 02:40

That depends what Nick Craw has been doing since the vote of confidence. If he has been seriously campaigning then Max is toast.

No. I think he is not on any of the influential committees

A shame. But even if FOTA wrote to the WMSC, will they call for an extraordinary meeting? Isn't that solely Max's call?

  • Steven Roy13/06/2009 at 02:54

A shame. But even if FOTA wrote to the WMSC, will they call for an extraordinary meeting? Isn't that solely Max's call?

Max controls the WMSC. The only thing that can happen at the FIA that woudld allow sense to break out is a vote of confidence on Max. If he lost that then his deputy gets the job until an election can be organised.

  • Journeyer13/06/2009 at 02:56

  • Steven Roy13/06/2009 at 02:59

I guess to show that they want to stay in the championship and they are only threatening to leave because they are being forced into it.

I fell asleep before the end. I saw the third quarter where the Lakers turned it around and the start of the fourth. I only really got into basketball this year. I always found it boring before. I have watched the NFL since the early 80s with the odd gap and MLB for about 7 or 8 years.

    Where did that come from?

A few pressions, I think. That was my impression.

Didn't see this fellow outside the toilet yesterday:

Must have been hiding under a desk.

  • Journeyer13/06/2009 at 08:30

Must have been hiding under a desk.

:D Heh. Prodrive and Lola must be massively disappointed, though. But if things will go I think the way they'll go (i.e. NOT a split), I don't think they'll get any other chance to get in. How do you read the situation?

  • Stuart C13/06/2009 at 08:38

How do you read the situation?

It’s a very complicated situation and the negotiations are ongoing, with a proliferation of wheels within wheels, so trying to forecast an outcome is rather like trying to predict the territorial settlement of the Treaty of Versailles…

Ooooh, nice comparison. But... didn't the Treaty of Versailles collapse spectacularly?

  • Stuart C13/06/2009 at 08:46

But… didn’t the Treaty of Versailles collapse spectacularly?

Well, Alsace-Lorraine is still in France…

  • Journeyer13/06/2009 at 08:47

Well, Alsace-Lorraine is still in France…

:D True. There's just a small matter of the Second World War. ;)

  • Journeyer13/06/2009 at 08:48

Ooooh - They've just mentioned that David Richards and Martin Birrane will be interviewed sometime during the 24 Hours, in particular, about their failed F1 bids...

my guess they'll probably say what they said yesterday, and what we're all realizing, yesterdays list is a vague idea of what we'll see next year but flexible as any FIA opinion.

you know what i mean. after i half read that article containing the discussions of the sports i figured why not - it'll be easier to get coverage than f1. is on at a better time of day and hopefully they have the same sort of graphics as indy - with live timing you can download as a csv file, and the camera work for the pitstops was amazing. same types of technology just different place and different people. i have no idea ;)

  • Scott in Italy13/06/2009 at 09:00

Does Arnage rhyme with race? I thought it rhymed with montage?

  • Christine13/06/2009 at 09:07

Apparently, I went for a 2 mile walk in preparation.

  • Scott in Italy13/06/2009 at 09:14

are you guys getting the stories about eddie irvine or is it just italian media?

  • Stuart C13/06/2009 at 09:14

I thought it rhymed with montage?

Silly tradition we have – uttering that statement rhyming carnage with Arnage, which does indeed rhyme with montage. Why do we do it? Unknown.

  • Journeyer13/06/2009 at 09:15

are you guys getting the stories about eddie irvine or is it just italian media?

no idea what that's about. do tell. :)

  • Christine13/06/2009 at 09:15

See if you were to give up one of your kidneys, Mr C would have been able to get an iPhone and this probably wouldn't have happened ;)

Too true. It must be my fault somehow!

    :D Irvine?

  • Scott in Italy13/06/2009 at 09:18

Don't mention that man's name in civilised company.

i think i'm going to have to...

    there are two stories

apparently he said ferrari was a flop but it was Schumacher who got us the victories.

story 2 - something about a nightclub altercation or something with the son of the mayor of milano or somewhere.

  • Journeyer13/06/2009 at 09:20

apparently he said ferrari was a flop but it was Schumacher who got us the victories.

He's exaggerating it somewhat - there were hundreds of mechanics and engineers working flat out - and they won titles before and after Michael. That said, it's not entirely untrue...

story 2 - something about a nightclub altercation or something with the son of the mayor of milano or somewhere.

goodness - isn't he too old to get into that kind of trouble?

  • Scott in Italy13/06/2009 at 09:22

He's exaggerating it somewhat - there were hundreds of mechanics and engineers working flat out - and they won titles before and after Michael. That said, it's not entirely untrue...

i'm just giving you the headline cos i haven't made the time to read the article - but it looks like a direct quote.

goodness - isn't he too old to get into that kind of trouble?

yeah i thought so, but i got eddie irvine and eddie jordan mixed for a few seconds and that was even funnier...

  • Journeyer13/06/2009 at 09:23

yeah i thought so, but i got eddie irvine and eddie jordan mixed for a few seconds and that was even funnier...

    eddie jordan in a nightclub - now there's a hilarious thought. :D

  • RCC13/06/2009 at 09:28

    Morning All!!!

    Le Mans is finally here!!!

Anyone watching the classic legends race before the main event?

Great Le Mans documentary on motors tv at the moment

  • Amy13/06/2009 at 09:31

I am crashing already and it hasn't even started. Time to have the first of many coffees.

  • Scott in Italy13/06/2009 at 09:33

yeah i thought so, but i got eddie irvine and eddie jordan mixed for a few seconds and that was even funnier...

i've now read the article and if i've got my facts right the nightclub incident - was over the ex girlfriend of irvine being with the mayor's kid. punches were thrown and i think irvine is suing for physical damages. anyway, enough gossip from the italian dailies. unless i head to see what today's ferrari statement is...

  • Amy13/06/2009 at 10:03

Well I'm not sure we are really limited by anything (except chocolate). We are about to go shopping after all.

Gosh this is more complicated then I thought.

  • RG13/06/2009 at 10:05

Gosh this is more complicated then I thought.

Lime then. No one will eat it so it will last over several days.

  • Alex Andronov13/06/2009 at 10:05

Goodness me. The more calls I get from the garage, the further away Goodwood seems to be!

  • RG13/06/2009 at 10:24

Just remembered - seeing as I'm going to be talking to Alonso and Piquet at Silverstone, just for you guys, does anyone have any questions they want me to ask them?

  • Christine13/06/2009 at 10:28

Yikes. That'll be a pain to get fixed...

Not so much a pain as a price.

  • Chris13/06/2009 at 10:28

    Mmm. Brakes and exhaust.

I'm not a car expert, bit I think they are not the best things to go wrong. I was told after my car's MOT that there was a slight play in the steering, but it was fine and nothing to worry about. Didn't stop me from panicking whenever a corner came for the rest of the day!

  • Steven Roy13/06/2009 at 10:28

Sidepodspace News - the shuttle has been cancelled.

The astronauts didn't even get their suits on. Boo. They'll decide when to reschedule today.

According to NASA there will be a delay of at least 96 hours before a launch. You can always rely on NASA.

THe cancellation is due to a leak in the gaseous hydrogen venting system outside the external fuel tank. Do NASA really not leak test stuff like this in advance??

I never trust what they say anymore. Was told after my last MOT there was a nail in the rear right. Turns out there was no nail anywhere, but the rear left did have a slow puncture from something else.

You at least want the excitement of them suiting up and the countdown getting down to just minutes. I want to see one of the launces where they pull the plug with 3 seconds to go

  • Journeyer13/06/2009 at 10:32

Speaking of which, LDM presscon should be underway by now. Stuart C is at the presscon.

make sure you ask them open questions so they can give an opinion other than yes or no. What do you think about? ask them about KERS, the future of F1, the drain of having to do interviews with people they've never heard of ;) Seriously Scott you've got a great opportunity and you deserve the prize. I hope you have time to enjoy yourself.

no you really don't. i think i've seen 6 seconds and i was gutted for the whole week. it's like watching a high scoring game of any sport and having it finish in a draw.

Latest update from NASA is that there will be a mission managers meeting tomorrow 2pm NASA time to assess and reschedule. The earliest date they can go on is June 17th but there is a ange conflict then because of the scheduled launch of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter/Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite.

They are going to screw this whole thing up and launch during one of the Silverstone sessions. I just knnow it.

I love how your definition of a screw up for lunch is a scheduling problem for you with f1 ;)

ask alonso about his most remember "almost victory" - the one that got away. where one thing stopped him. nothing springs to mind, but maybe he might have something...

  • Steven Roy13/06/2009 at 10:42

Well you could argue that scrubbing a launch with all the added cost due to someone not leak testing a venting system that carries hydrogen is a screw up on its own. I have missed so many launches and landings due to delays shifting them into times where I can't watch that it is like they are picking on me.

  • Jon Waldock13/06/2009 at 10:43

then ask piquet but stop halfway and go 'oh wait'

    if i were to guess, i think he'd say Hungary 2006. :)

    Haha, good one.

I'll put these down in a Word document so I've got them all together.

;) when i was typing that question i did haev "ask them" then went back and changed it...

maybe the schedule doesn't revolve around you Steven? the universe can, just not the schedule ;) I'm pretty sure they check these things. I am so going to a launch when I'm in the US, but so hard to plan a trip when you never really know when they're going up.

You will probably need to go three times to see one launch. They are doing the first test launch of the shuttle replacement vehicle next month so there should be a load of those to see over the next few months. You may get one of those scheduled close to a shuttle launch to give you a better chance of seeing something fly.

Last year and the year before, someone had designed a mashup web page with the live timing, Radio Lemans, Le Mans news, etc. Anyone know if it is available this year?

I suggest you switch to the race live commentary thread as a lot of us are over there

Hallo! There was a suggestion from one RF1 fan site blogger to create Formula One Fans Association, since everybody's got an association these days. So I was left with the task to test actual interest to this idea. Just go to me blog and say something. It's a shameless plug so I'm slightly ashamed but the idea sounded pretty crazy. Help me! I need to be famous.

It’s been a dangerous week so far, as we’ve had two sporting injuries – Franck only went and broke his leg before the biggest race of the year, and Ollie hurt himself in Monaco.

I've only just read that - I must be a bit slow at the moment. :D

Thanks for the mention. I feel rather embarrassed about the whole thing to be honest. But it is kinda cool to say that I've spent time in the, ahem, Princess Grace Hospital Centre, I'll 'ave you know. :)

Shame it wasn't for a racing-related injury, but probably just as well given my luck. Here I am in my hotel room in the early hours of the morning all bandaged up.

Best wishes to Franck. Last time I checked he was still in the top three. That be Nuvolari-esque, me thinks.

    I suggest you try driving without one first. You don’t want to become another Sat-Nav disaster statistic. Sometimes they are wrong. {Comment #36}

Yes. Last week my family had to help a seriously lost driver who was about to try getting his seven-ton lorry plus trailer down a single-lane road due to the advice of his sat-nav. To make it worse, the lane was going the wrong way anyway...
