Friday at last, and I now have another joinee to my 'Thursdays are bad' club. Thankfully, we are heading straight towards the weekend now, and not before time. Here are some of the things being talked about at the moment:

  • Having finally realised that joining Sidepodcast is not as easy as you might think, I've written a Quick Start Guide to answer some of the immediate questions. Have a read, whether you are new or not, and let me know what you think, and if there is anything I have missed.
  • Simon Gillett has confirmed that Donington Park has been handed a 17 year deal to host the British Grand Prix, and we are trying to figure this out. Whilst it makes sense that he needs it to make the debenture scheme work, surely signing up to something for 17 years is never a good idea even in a normal financial/political climate?
  • In the 'dragging old names from the past' saga, it looks as though Team Lotus aren't to be bothered with legal action, whilst Brabham are going ahead with proceedings against Formtech who are trying to enter 2010 with the good family name. Because what Formula 1 needs now is more lawsuits.

That'll do it for now. Let us know what you're doing over the weekend, although if it isn't live commenting Le Mans with us, then you'll be missing out. I'll see you in the comments.

I'm off, and won't be around at all during Friday - going to Cardiff to see Oasis, just the decade late then. :-)

I will hopefully be here for the start of Le Mans!

In all honesty, I don't think Litespeed will get in, but I guess most are saying Lola as team 3, and I wanna be different, so yeah, sure. Besides, many bigger teams have plain and simple sucked in F1 anyway.

and all the current suspects as well, or just Williams and FIF1?

  • Joe12/06/2009 at 00:03

All current, even Toyota ,they might go after 2012 or so. They'd all be silly to not sign and risk not being there next year, they'll be sorry if they can't get a spot due to their own stubbornness. Especially Ferrari, what the hell are they are. Of course they have plenty other series to go to, but F1 is what they should stay in.

depends on how live commenting le mans goes. hopefully we'll do something, but it probs won't be a full on debrief.

Ah yep, fair enough. I have to decide between a weekend at the coast, or a weekend trying to follow Le Mans. Tricky, since Sports Car coverage in Aus is even worse than F1 coverage.

  • Alianora La Canta12/06/2009 at 01:14

What am I doing this weekend?

Shopping for Silverstone bits, going swimming training (and working extra hard because I'll miss the two sessions after that) and visiting Grandma.

I'm sure I can squeeze in some time to do F1/Le Mans-related stuff.

  • Paul12/06/2009 at 01:15

I don't think that will happen. Max will either announce a load of new teams with WIlliams, FIF1 and possibly Ferrari or he will announce all the curent teams with some conditions attached.

Alex was saying end of this month. But the mere fact he'd announce them (even with conditions) means he's already lost. Those who didn't make it will probably not be able to commit to F1 if they have to wait any longer.

Another reason why I think the latter will happen is that while nothing was agreed today, negotiations didn't collapse either. So they're not done talking yet...

Hope you are right. Also, the bluff about all those other entries is bound to fall over at some point. No way we would see 8 new teams in 2010.

The ACO takes a shot at the FIA by inviting the teams of the FOTA to compete and shape the future of LeMans.

The ACO takes a shot at the FIA by inviting the teams of the FOTA to compete and shape the future of LeMans.

Indeed. And don't think FOTA would say no to them, if it came to that. But I think we'll see common sense prevail today, if only provisionally.

  • Journeyer12/06/2009 at 04:51

And with that, Good Morning, Europe!

Just before 6 AM in London, 7 AM in Paris, we're just over 4 hours away from the most important document that the FIA will ever release this year.

    ......so far

good point, Paul. it really depends on whether or not FOTA will be in the list, and even then, if they will only be there provisionally or permanently. but even a provisional entry would already be a win for FOTA, as the new teams that won't make it will not have enough time to prepare for next year if they have to wait any longer.

  • Paul12/06/2009 at 04:57

Yeah, I suspect all we will see is the next step in negotiation. Lots of "provisional" language

well every season we have several provisional calendars for the next season, so why can't we have provisional entry list with provisonaly accepted teams that entered provisionaly due to provisional rules being in place while securing provisional peace between FOTA, FIA and all the other provisionally accepted entries ?

i think that's the issue - they need to make it as interesting as possible. expect 45 seconds of turkish scenery (not the 16 fans that went) like they did with the french grand prix last year) and then i guess they'll show every camera angle of the first lap with vettel going wide - and rubens having issues but really...what else would they pop in.

(Just a little thing, how do you get the little quote box?)

Are you using one of the live commenting solutions? If so, just click on the sentence you want to quote, and it appears in the comments box.

Oh look at that!! Don't I feel stupid....

    See I told you MAGIC

  • Christine12/06/2009 at 09:08

Oh look at that!! Don't I feel stupid....

Not at all. It's not obvious, but it is magical :)

  • Mawech12/06/2009 at 09:13

I (once upon a time; long, long ago) worked on one of the first IBM PCs to come into the UK, and I understood it all, I could even hard wire things to it with a soldering iron to make it work VCRs and the like. I understood the OS and software; I could write programs to it; but now I'm at a loss most of the time.

    Sic Transit

  • Alison12/06/2009 at 09:15

You sound like my dad! He used to work for IBM back in the day and always says things like that....

  • Mawech12/06/2009 at 09:16

Gee Thanks; that's made me feel ever so young

    :-)

  • Alison12/06/2009 at 09:17

Haha! Sorry. If it makes you feel better, I'm only 19. My dad's not that old....

  • Mawech12/06/2009 at 09:18

Sorry Mawech has just stepped outside to shoot himself

    ;-)

  • Alison12/06/2009 at 09:19

    :(

  • Mawech12/06/2009 at 09:22

One very strange experiance I had was when on a visit to Hursley, I walked down a corridor, which I thought must be a home for the terminally "over-stressed" as all these guys were just sitting there talking to their PCs. I then found out they were developing the speech recognition software, but at the time it was very spooky.

if you're looking for something to distract you from the... the thing we're not mentioning, then the building43 website is now live:

    http://www.building43.com/

haven't watched any videos as yet, but these are the people we'll likely move our hosting to as soon as we can escape the clutches of media temple.

  • Alex Andronov12/06/2009 at 10:35

    it doesn't. sorry, should've said.

Ah.. no. not your fault... I've seen a trend for these kind of websites though. Somebody has paid somebody to make a "cool" site. But it doesn't say what you do.

In this case though I think Scoble is trying not to making it look like a hosting company and make it "about" something else.

  • Chris_Humphreys12/06/2009 at 10:36

I am going on my PS2 for some pre Monza weekend testing then the Race weekend

When they say about that Fanatical support business they mean it. But yeah that might be more at the higher end of the pricing. Average wait on a telephone call... 1 ring. And then you are speaking to somebody who can log into your server immediately because it recognised your telephone number on the way in and provided him on screen a list of the servers you own.

  • Lukeh12/06/2009 at 10:48

Yes, and most importantly they know what they are talking about. And from time to time contact you with things like... "we've noticed that between x o'clock and y o'clock your server gets a lot of traffic and your backup is happening around the same time. If we moved it to here then your server would be more responsive".

you mean, when you complain your server's down, they don't wait 10mins until it magically reappears and then tweet you saying "it looks fine to us"?

    you lie! ;)

  • Alex Andronov12/06/2009 at 10:54

Also our server hasn't gone down.

They pay you back for downtime at a ridiculous rate. So if our server was down for an hour we'd be making money on the monthly bill.

  • me12/06/2009 at 10:55

They pay you back for downtime at a ridiculous rate. So if our server was down for an hour we'd be making money on the monthly bill.

slicehost did the same. f1m was down for 5 minutes and they gave us a months hosting for free.

  • Lukeh12/06/2009 at 10:56

..and how exactly do you then download your browser of preference?

It;s Microsoft! They gotta make life difficult for us.

  • Nick12/06/2009 at 10:56

    throw rocks at the internet?

  • Alex Andronov12/06/2009 at 10:57

But Mosso are saying that they have the same fanatical support. That's the good news. And it's cheaper.

Were you really using that other kidney? ;)

  • me12/06/2009 at 10:57

It is, it's to comply with european competition law. But it's always fun to blame Microsoft :P

Pet hate #2 for the day.

Yet every other OS that bundles their browser is just fine.

iPhone anyone? Try getting another browser on that

  • Alex Andronov12/06/2009 at 11:00

I agree this is very silly.

i have no answer to that one.

microsoft did kill the browser market though. and all versions of IE are evil. so they kinda deserve everything they get. call it karma or something.

Yeah that's a bit 2005 though. There's heaps of easy choice now.

  • Chris_Humphreys12/06/2009 at 11:02

    use firefox

  • Jon Waldock12/06/2009 at 11:03

    use firefox

you'll be beaten alive for saying that ;)

  • Alex Andronov12/06/2009 at 11:03

Yeah that's a bit 2005 though. There's heaps of easy choice now.

In many ways that only happened because Microsoft were told to rack off!

  • Alex Andronov12/06/2009 at 11:03

Instead, it'll provide an IE-less version to manufactuers, who'll then be able to choose whether they'd like to install IE, install a different browser, or install multiple browsers.

Manuacturers who choose to add IE back in will be offered an "Internet Explorer 8 Pack" that'll allow them to reinstall the browser. However, if the manufacturer chooses not to install anything, the consumer will have to battle with a browserless operating system and no method of getting one from a website. Microsoft says it'll provide CDs and FTP access for that situation.

    Really?

  • Paul12/06/2009 at 11:05

Sure! But why bother with this ban now? Why just MS? I don't use safari on OSX either.

  • Alex Andronov12/06/2009 at 11:05

    Really?

I'm not sure this is really the sensible solution you were hoping for.

  • Nick12/06/2009 at 11:05

    ...CD's?

what about people who have these modern computers which don't have cd drives?

  • Lukeh12/06/2009 at 11:06

I'm not sure this is really the sensible solution you were hoping for.

Just don't see why they can't have the installation stuff prepared on the system for when you choose what browser you're wanting.

  • Alison12/06/2009 at 11:07

Oh god. This happened to me before. I got some bug in my browser and had to reinstall it but you can't use it to go online to get a functional version. It's a pain in the arse....

  • Lukeh12/06/2009 at 11:07

And by that I don't mean pre-installed, obviously that voids the whole IE/EU Law thing, but just have the various choices there for you to choose from. CD's just seem unecessary to me

  • Paul12/06/2009 at 11:07

what about people who have these modern computers which don't have cd drives?

Why can't they resolve these things on time rather than 5 year after they stopped mattering?

  • Alex Andronov12/06/2009 at 11:08

Just don't see why they can't have the installation stuff prepared on the system for when you choose what browser you're wanting.

And by that I don't mean pre-installed, obviously that voids the whole IE/EU Law thing, but just have the various choices there for you to choose from. CD's just seem unecessary to me

I think the problem is that the code to go and get it off the internet would be internet accessing code from IE which would void the IE/EU law

  • Nick12/06/2009 at 11:09

What difference does that really make though to the original complaint? Surely it's just a technicality as to whether it's actually on your machine or if you need to install it yourself from their pre-existing links

  • Chris_Humphreys12/06/2009 at 11:10

When installing Windows 7 RC at the end of the setup it asks you to choose your wifi network and enter password, then they could intergrate a option of which browser the customer would like as well as Anti-virus, then with the option chosen install them from the internet!

  • Alison12/06/2009 at 11:10

Wouldn't you need to install it to go find an alternative....

  • Paul12/06/2009 at 11:11

OK, final thought. How can the EU ask MS to do this, and not every other OS writer?

  • Chris_Humphreys12/06/2009 at 11:11

not really if you have the install on a memory stick or server network drive

  • Alex Andronov12/06/2009 at 11:12

OK, final thought. How can the EU ask MS to do this, and not every other OS writer?

Because the anti-trust suit was levelled against Microsoft. You'll have to start one against Apple now. See you in 5 years.

Because the anti-trust suit was levelled against Microsoft. You'll have to start one against Apple now. See you in 5 years.

  • Alex Andronov12/06/2009 at 11:13

then with the option chosen install them from the internet!

They can't do this bit because the rule says no accessing of the internet by the OS

  • Paul12/06/2009 at 11:14

They can't do this bit because the rule says no accessing of the internet by the OS

What old granny made that ruling?

  • Chris_Humphreys12/06/2009 at 11:14

Microsoft make N versions of XP and Vista which don't include Media Player, IE, Movie maker, etc so there will properly be a N version of Win7

  • Alex Andronov12/06/2009 at 11:14

What old granny made that ruling?

Well Microsoft origionally claimed they couldn't not ship IE because it was part of the OS

  • Nick12/06/2009 at 11:15

They can't do this bit because the rule says no accessing of the internet by the OS

This is crazy, what if Microsoft petition this case against apple.. iphone that needs a cd to install a web browser and access the app store?

I know for the PS3 version there you can adjust the setups, I'm not sure if it is the same with the PS2 version but you can find the setups online.

These setups are for the PS3 game and I don't think they will be use able in the PS2. The PS3 game came out in 2007

  • Alianora La Canta12/06/2009 at 11:43

    I am worried about the whole F1 entry thing. Does anyone think the FIA might take the chance to “get back” at McLaren and deny an entry? Or are they seen as the second most important team? {Comment #30}

This time, I don't think it'll be anything personal against McLaren - apart from anything else, there seems to have been a genuine attempt to make a new start since Ron Dennis stepped sideways. Instead, I can see them being thrown out along with all the other conditional FOTA members for not agreeing to enforced arbitrariness.

  • me12/06/2009 at 11:43

    The ACO takes a shot at the FIA by inviting the teams of the FOTA to compete and shape the future of LeMans. {Comment #47}

Cool! That would give the manufacturers a dignified way out if needed (and Toyota for one needs it - I somehow doubt management will let it remain in F1 in 2010 even if the racing side gets its way concerning the regulations).

yup. your browser passes a version string to the site every time you view a page or download something like an image. it's not unique though, so it's hard to, say, track an individual.

google gives us a report of stuff like how many people view the site, what podcasts they download and which browser they use.

    Alia said something about the rules, but as I’ve said before, it’s not like Max hasn’t ignored protocol in the past… {Comment #55}

In theory, the entry list for teams cannot be provisional. This is because according to Article 2 of the Sporting Regulations, all entries must accept that they abide by all the regulations contained therein.

In practise, the FIA no longer appears to care about following the regulations it has set. The question is: if it doesn't care, why should the teams? If the only reason is to do with power, then the FIA now stands on a pillar of salt and a pillar of sand, to mangle the Coldplay lyric.

More likely that they are both experienced professional teams, and as such Mad Max would think they could be trouble. He might want teams he can intimidate.

    Mr C & Christine

I know you're thinking about a site redesign & also Christine has been doing the new user guide...

Maybe we need something like this:

    http://www.brianmay.com/siteguide.html

    :)

  • Lukeh12/06/2009 at 15:32

Maybe we need something like this:

    Woah.

I'm impressed. Not for the right reasons though..

  • Amy12/06/2009 at 15:33

Maybe we need something like this:

    MY EYES

  • Alex Andronov12/06/2009 at 15:36

The thing that's most amazing about it... You look at that and thing. Man I'm sure it's more confusing than the actual site. And then you try and use the site... And... Wow!

no wonder the man doesn't make records any more. he's disappeared up his own navigation.

  • Steven Roy12/06/2009 at 15:45

I am heading out shortly but the drivers parade through Le mans should be starting in around 15 minutes if anyone wants to see Franck or Christi(j)an there should be TV coverage and a video feed somewhere.

  • Alex Andronov12/06/2009 at 16:01

  • Alex Andronov12/06/2009 at 16:03

On a slightly more serious sight design question... On a side project I'm working on for a friend the suggestion has come up to use Wordpress as a CMS.

I saw Christine was a bit anti wordpress earlier on. Any thoughts?

  • Alex Andronov12/06/2009 at 16:04

site not sight? I'm going mad today!

  • me12/06/2009 at 16:15

I saw Christine was a bit anti wordpress earlier on. Any thoughts?

    i hate it.

but it depends on how big the site is and what performance needs are. wp is great for small blogs and new users. it's wholly useless for running say, a live commenting system.

  • Alex Andronov12/06/2009 at 16:17

but it depends on how big the site is and what performance needs are. wp is great for small blogs and new users. it's wholly useless for running say, a live commenting system.

Okay. So CMS wise? Any suggestions for alternatives?

  • Mawech12/06/2009 at 16:19

So the upshot of to-day is

    3 new teams

    1 Mates of Max

1 USA to try and get some Bucks

1 Spanish team to make up the numbers

2 Teams in 'cos they want to be

    Williams & Force India

5 Teams in if they give in

Maclaran; Brawn; BMW; Toyota; & Renault

3 Teams in like it or not

    Red-Bull; Torro-Rosso & SF

  • Lukeh12/06/2009 at 16:22

Woohoo! Forza 3 is gonna have Le Mans 24 Hour :D

  • Mawech12/06/2009 at 16:24

    Say I got an idea

How about the team that comes last is demoted to GP2, and the GP2 champion constructors get promoted to F1

  • Nick12/06/2009 at 16:25

    Say I got an idea

How about the team that comes last is demoted to GP2, and the GP2 champion constructors get promoted to F1

GP2 is a spec series, so they wont be constructors like they are in F1

  • Steven Roy12/06/2009 at 16:26

I am heading out into the big bad world. Back sometime soon-ish.

In case I forget later the warm up for LeMans is at 08:30 French time 7:30 am UK tomorrow but as it only lasts 45 minutes I don't think I will bother.

The space shuttle is still on schedule to launch at 7:17 am EDT which is 12:17pm UK.

In the afternoon there is some race in France. The starting procedure begins at 14:22 French time 13:22 UK with the actual start at 15:00 French time 14:00 UK

  • Christine12/06/2009 at 16:26

I saw Christine was a bit anti wordpress earlier on. Any thoughts?

Just to be clear - I heart Wordpress. But I also have to listen to the swearing.

  • Steven Roy12/06/2009 at 16:26

    Say I got an idea

How about the team that comes last is demoted to GP2, and the GP2 champion constructors get promoted to F1

That has been suggested before but it is totally unworkable

  • me12/06/2009 at 16:28

Okay. So CMS wise? Any suggestions for alternatives?

hmm. well wordpress.com does have perf issues. but isn't customizable.

heard good things about drupal, but never used it.

  • Christine12/06/2009 at 16:28

So the upshot of to-day is

You better not be sneaking unhappy thoughts into my happy place.

Fluffy bunny rabbits and poppy fields!

touche! game of eye spy space anyone? :)

    That is for next week.

There is a meeting of mission managers at 9:51pm (What is it with NASA and the one minute??) tonight to give go/no go for launch. If they give a go at 9:52 they start filling the fuel tanks.

is this the shuttle that was sitting next to the other one when it went up? i follow the space program, but been too swept up with other stuff. so when would launch be?

  • Dan Brunell12/06/2009 at 16:46

    In the words of HST:

"When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro. "

  • Steven Roy12/06/2009 at 16:50

Am definitely scheduling the next live stream for 7:01pm.

Good plan. That way even iff you are late you will be less late. You could take Lukeh's Formula 11 idea and go one better than NASA and start at 7:11.

  • Steven Roy12/06/2009 at 16:51

is this the shuttle that was sitting next to the other one when it went up? i follow the space program, but been too swept up with other stuff. so when would launch be?

Same shuttle. They have simply filled the cargo bay since than and for some reason moved it to the other pad. Why they would do that when it is on a perfectly serviceable pad is beyond me but I guess when the government writes your cheques you don't need to worry about blowing a few bucks.

  • Steven Roy12/06/2009 at 16:52

It is now 17:51 Time for me to leave.

It does seem strange. maybe they already sold off some of the parts on the other pad. but as you say, money is money. same strange approach seems to work for Chrysler, GM....

crazy whirlwind, I fly into Wellington on a Tuesday, so I can do a quick trip to the national museum and the F1 exhibit, then that night I will fly down the country to home because its mums birthday, and I'm only staying until Sunday. As long as I can have one of these, it will be worth it

  • Scott in Italy12/06/2009 at 18:06

    And you're in italy...also another problem ;)

My laptop screen freezes and the only way to make it un-freeze is to pinch the sides of the screen, and sometimes it does film-roll style except with my screen aaahhh, silly asus

"Two chicken breasts stuffed with mushrooms, spinach, cheese & sundried tomatoes, corralled in a herb crust & served with a chunky mushroom sauce. Served with a Lone Star coleslaw & buffalo chips.... In memory of the Great Man himself."

Everytime I go to The Lone Star (NZ chain of pub-restaurants) I think I should get something else, but I always come back to that. Because it's amazing. And huge.

  • Jon Waldock12/06/2009 at 18:09

It is cool, mainly because you can still use your mouse, so its fun to try clicking on stuff with the cursor moving even though your screen is moving and the mouse isnt....

    i confuse myself

Look North was full of motorsport today - they covered Manor Motorsport in detail (their main base is in Dinnington, which is a mile and three train stations north of where I live) and then had a James Thompson interview (which could be summarised as "BTCC is way better for racing than F1") and a piece on Sarah Moore, who is apparently doing very well in Ginetta cars. Her older brother Nigel is in Le Mans this weekend and younger brother David is five places behind her in the Ginetta championship...

Yeah, I guess. I went down to York they have Look North as well. Though sometimes, I think anyways, they say Look North East and Cumbria

  • Alianora La Canta12/06/2009 at 19:17

My nearest racing team is JVA (John Village Automotive), which I go past every time I go to college. OK, it's at 70mph on a train, but it gives me a great view of their lorry park!

They currently compete in Formula Master (and will be in Brno on British GP weekend) and used to engineer the US entry in A1GP.

Well I'm gonna be with Renault for the weekend, I'll meet the drivers, team and get a tour of the garage. It's also very likely I'll meet Anthony Davidson and DC too! For Sunday, I'm gonna get a video camera and I'll be going round talking to fans on race day for a piece for the site. They're also gonna try and set me up with a profile on the site too! 1. Go to the Listener's Map on the Sidepodcast Wiki

    3. Type your location.

    4. Press "OK".

    5. Find where the map has dumped your new marker (the markers are indicated by little blue diamondy-arrow things) and click on it.

    6. Add a comment (if you weren't prompted for it already) to the effect of "Where I Live".

If you catch it within 5 minutes of commenting, opening a new window, going to the comment in Ye Olde Commenting (i.e. without using the live tools) and clicking "Edit Comment" will enable you to do so.

Otherwise you'll find Sidepodders are tolerant of spelling errors, aside from the odd giggle.

    Rosberg -> BMW

    Kubica -> Toyota

Heidfeld & Trulli -> Unknown (may or not be moving, and if so nobody dares guess where yet)

Max Mosley is facing a call to stand down as FIA president as the motor manufacturers of Europe threw their weight behind the Formula One Teams' Association.

  • Alianora La Canta12/06/2009 at 20:51

    Most important issue here, who on earth are Manor? {Comment #668}

They're a team from Dinnington, Sheffield (though it's really halfway between Rotherham and Worksop) who race in the F3 Euroseries and are currently 4th (they also have a branch in Formula Renault based in North Ollerton, Nottinghamshire). One of their drivers, Spaniard Roberto Mehri, is currently second in the series and may be F1 material. Sadly, his team-mates haven't scored yet, but the 2009 F3 Euroseries is only two rounds old so far.

The factory is rather small and box-like, but with design being off-loaded to Wirth Research and specialist component manufacture being outsourced Jordan-style, it's probably big enough to be going on with.

It's exciting enough that I could reasonably aspire to commute there to work, if I ever acquired a skill set that Manor was interested in.

How surreal, my housemate just said something about a blow torch just that second. I can't think the last time that came up in conversation....

How weird. Lukeh's blowtorch is discussed every time he has a driving lesson

You'd think after everything that's happened with his family he'd realise what was important in life.

All of this is really because his name stopped him getting involved in UK politics. He really wanted to be a Conservative prime minister albeit a long way to the right of Thatcher.

This affects the touring side of the FIA as well as the sporting side. Some of those manufacturers are involved in other types of racing like Le Mans so they are no longer just threatening F1. They threatening the whole FIA.

Looks like it's all about to become a lot messier.

Max clearly thought he was going to split FOTA with his announcement today. But given that Journyer and I figured out what he would announce last night I assume the teams did too and had this ready.

  • Andy Taylor12/06/2009 at 21:50

  • Scott Woodwiss12/06/2009 at 21:55

I don't think anybody will actually kill him, though at the rate that Max's mistakes are increasing in severity and frequency, I can see someone attempting to oust him for malgovernance but being thwarted because the election process will have begun by the time the individual has got round to suggesting it.

Max will almost certainly lose the election - and laugh from behind a book on an attractive beach somewhere as his successor grapples with the mess he's made.

Kinda like an Obama struggling with the mess Dick Cheney made. For it was indeed Cheney who was doing most of the thinking for Bush 43.
