It's qualifying day at Le Mans, which means that today is a mini-Franck day (and anyone else who might be driving). Saturday/Sunday will be the big Franck weekend, so be prepared for some obsessive-ness over the weekend. For now, though, here's some F1 news to balance things out:
- The Lotus company have come out and said they are not associated with the current entry for the 2010 season that is assuming the same name. They're contemplating legal proceedings, just like the Brabham family were as well. Why must people drag old names back to life if it is only going to cause problems? How about being a little creative and coming up with a new name?
- Bernie Ecclestone has said he would also consider legal action against the manufacturers if they went ahead and started up their own breakaway series. Damon Hill has warned that if F1 went the same way as IRL, it would be a disaster. Will everyone involved sit up and take notice though?
- Toro Rosso are to become the last team on the grid to bolt the double diffuser onto their car, although they suggest it is not as simple as that. Presumably, they could have just grabbed the info from Adrian Newey once he'd figured it out, so why has it taken them this long?
That'll do it for now. Please feel free to discuss your own thoughts and feelings in the daily post, that's what it's there for. I'll see you in the comments.
Attention, it causes intrest because people know the name. On the Lotus front I thought they had permission to use the name?
They do - from David Hunt - the owner of the Team Lotus name.
Right, this is my last post before I set off on my pilgrimage to Le Mans. I have just finished another blog post, Driver Consistencies - Turkey.
Off to bed and then up early to start the drive down - I'll try and tweet where possible, but if you don't hear from me have an awesome weekend and you'll get the full debrief from me early next week!
Enjoy Gavin
have an awesome time matey.
Have fun.
Have fun Gavin
your chat last night about how time means nothing to me must have jinxed me as i turned off my alarm in my sleep and was an hour late to work. Oops.
Have a great one :-)
oh...dear
I have bever done that. Well not more than 100 or so times
Anyone ever use one of those FM adaptors for their iPod that you can tune your player into your car radio?
yup, we have one somewhere, why?
Currently, I have my iPod rigged into the cassette player of my car with one of those "tape on a wire" thingys
Pick my new (to me) car tomorrow and it has a CD player with no line in jack on the front. Want a cheap solution until I get the iPhone
Have a good time in Le Mans, Gavin!
retro. nice.
the fm thingy's work fine. nothing to report really.
Radio thingys are usually pretty good, make sure you buy an iPhone compatible one though. Performance can be variable though.
I heard they used to be a bit crap in large, built-up areas like London and all the radio stations (including pirate ones wid bangin' chooons)
That's what I thought
ahh, maybe. not much experience of that.
Griffin seems ok, gets 5 *s
£35 for pod, £50 for pod &/or phone
that the itrip? think that's the one we have. black with round edges.
'tis, but a differnet colour now
It depends on so many things including where the aerial is on the car etc. There used to be one that you plugged into the aerial socket on the back of the radio unit - direct injection, but I've not seen a dedicated iPod one.
Either the Belkin or Griffin will have to suffice until I settle in with the iPhone and get a cradle hard wired in
I used to have an itrip years ago - and it was crap. I moved to a kensigton, which was fantastic, but does not charge the iphone. I now have a Belkin which is OK. Radio not as good as the Kensington, but it is workable.
This needs a bit more research, I feel
well I am happy enought with the Belkin. Depends on how crowded your FM band is
Do you mean reception for the iPod or playing the radio (which I have no need for) ?
As I say, it's London [and the mean streets of Saaf Lanhdon and all it's hippity hop, popular beat combo piracy]
Evening all, i have returned from tube struck London, I am shattered
Traffic was awful today wasn't it, glad I wasn't bussing it
i'm going to ask a dumb question... but please forgive my ignorance.
we live in a world of almost unlimited bandwidth, where you can broadcast to the whole world from your bedroom for virtually nothing... who the hell is still running a pirate fm station?
reception from the iphone, so the strength of the transmitter
Well I walked everywhere... only to find that some tubes were running.
And I power walked from borough high street to Leicester square in 20 mins only to find that i could have got a train from london bridge. I don know enough about london without tubes :(
Good point but they still do
I must say, there's less of it these days but there's no subscription fees to your broadband provider and as they're always getting busted and moving on - quite mobile
Probably some Ghetto Kudos to it
must be. i just assumed no-one still did it.
Pirates.. arr! we don't need no new fangaled internet.
But i dont think yo will find many peple listening to internetradio in the depths of tower hamlets
Plus, if they did it on the internet, it'd be crystal clear.
That'd be just... wrong, Innit
Sorry I didn't realise my keyboard and mouse have decided to do their impersonation of a disfunctional family with the computer
:D
figured you were getting into the spirit of it ;)
BTW, Chill on DAB Radio is absolutely superb.
Just saying
:D Maybe they were!
My car stereo has an auxiliary jack and I just plug my iPod directly into the stereo.
show off! ;)
actually, that is by far the best plan. bassano, you're buying the wrong car.
My brother has one of those FM jobbies and he gets a fair bit of interference with it, so much that he is looking into getting something like mine.
you could go further and buy an apple approved car:
http://www.apple.com/ipod/carintegration/
that may be pushing too far though.
I thought for a second that the big comeback announcement from Jobs was that they had produced a car
:D :P
hehe.
I'm reading through yesterdays comments, I never realised what damage a text message could do to a horse... The more you know....
they must be mental to read through. have you got to approx 5pm yet?
Yes :D not sure that reading that made me any wiser....
Read it again. It may help
summarise as you go through it. would be good to see your workings...
Oh god no!
Knowledge x (whatever the hell was going on) = perpetual confusion
Well done to Scott! What an amazing prize!
Sorry to bring bad news to Sidepodcastland, but tragic news out of Canada.
why do always learn of these things after they've been cancelled :(
I wonder if any unnamed energy drink companies have similar schemes?
Reminds me of the cascade brewery in Tasmania, they used to shut down for 10 mins 4 times a day, and all the employees, including truck drivers could drink as much as they wanted/could in those 10 mins... Someone put a stop to in the late 80's
Bernie Ecclestone has said he would also consider legal action against the manufacturers if they went ahead and started up their own breakaway series. Damon Hill has warned that if F1 went the same way as IRL, it would be a disaster. Will everyone involved sit up and take notice though?
I have a conspiracy theory...
Bernie is backing secretly backing Max with the budget caps. This way, when Bernie negotiates for a longer term deal with the teams, he can ratchet down what he pays them and rewrite the way that the teams are paid to be even more adventitious to him 9if that is possible.)
It creates the perfect excuse for him and a way to turn the tables a bit on the teams. Think of it this way, how would the teams look if they were apparently getting tens to hundreds of millions from Bernie more than the 40 million budget and we lose a race like Spa or the British Grand Prix due to the high cost of a grand prix.
Bernie can come back with the response 'We'll these teams ask for so much more then their 40 million budget and I am obligated to give it to them. It is a shame because I always like coming to place 'X''
Bernie might of found the scapegoat he was always looking for and a way to turn the screws a bit on the teams with their excess to turn FOTA into the bad guy a little bit. Just a theory but I've been trying figure out what Bernie will win from this argument.
right i must bed myself...
see ya nick. i shall retire too.
Good night everyone. I am going to fix dinner. I think I am going with a bit of scrimp stirfry. I will be back to continue the late show here on Sidepodcast.
I wouldn't drink any of that swill Molson's or even Labatt's brew if you gave it to me. There are much better Canadian breweries who brew a much better beer than those two, but that's just my opinion.
Seeing as I'm looking at getting a new car either later this year or at some point next year, I think I will add that to my list of options
Wordpress 2.8 is out now. Seems a lot faster and the dashboard has had a bit of a spring clean.
More details: http://bit.ly/wordpress28
Because Max wants to populate the grid with classic names that can replace Ferrari and McLaren.
Oh, and the Daily Express has said that RBR and STR have filed for unconditional entries.
Please don't let this be true...
no nasty surprises during upgrade ?
well, to be frank, I do not know what I want to be true. if both sides stay firm, we know what the result will be. someone has to make some move.
I hope they hurry up. Melbourne 2010 tickets are taunting me, the phone number memorised, waiting for me to ring it...
same here same here. I already got used to my March trips down under. I do not want to skip it just because few egos can't work things out ...
Hey everyone what time is the Le Mans Qualliy?
Which channel is it on the telly and what time does the coverage start?
Also can I watch it on freeview
I'm wondering about buying a netbook .. anyone got any recommendations for a good one or are they a waste of time?
Compaq 702EA brill, biggest keyboard of any netbook, xp home, 1GB of ram, 1.6 Atom Hyperthreaded
Thanks Chris .. is that good spec?
The only problem with netbooks is that you can't view this livecommenting with two boxs side by side they are all in a row down the page
Cheers, I use the doohickey though so shouldn't be a problem
kool
What the URL for doohickey
http://www.sidepodcast.com/realtime/ for doohickey
has the times on it
le mans website
Thanks I think I will use that instead
Thank
and for online watching, this feed worked yesterday, and hopefully will again.
thank you for sharing with us, your posting is great nice to read your blog, i hope it will be nice race
whoa?!?! when did that happen? so maybe they lined up with FOTA for one application, and another separate one? i wonder who else might have done that? I've got no info on this - i'm just speculating. my research time is limited these days.
Planetf1 are submitting on the story
the italian press are just reporting bernie's quotes in the Daily Express. nothing new over here. not yet ;)
Morning all,
I see OK magazine daily have taken up f1 reporting...
Oh?
G'morning guys.
taken from motorsport's article about yesterday's meeting
morning Lukeh :)
My shameless blog plug - hey look, it's Le Mans related. Albeit ten years out of date.
Watching video of Peter Dumbreck’s CLR somersaulting through the air will forever make me wince.
There's also a rumor that Wurz's Superfund team may not make the cut, after the FIA saw it had some unpaid debt. But it's just GMM at this point, so nothing confirmed.
Sometimes I wonder whose side will collapse first, with all this to-ing and fro-ing. That said, if the RBR-STR news is true, the FIA can afford to dump 2 hopefuls and still have a full grid...
Morning Christine hows you! Is there going to be a Defief show this weekend?
I was thinking of paying the £5 or what ever it was to get the F1 app but then everyone is sayings its £5 every race, I might has well just stream the live timmings from my netbook and chat in the live commenting on my 17" beast of a laptop!
I had a wierd moment this morning... got up at 6, opened curtains, got dressed, looked outside and thought "Ah, lovely Saturday start...." then noticed my stepdad and brother's cars had gone (to work, they don't work Saturdays)...then looked at my phone...
....and quietly crept back into bed feeling a bit silly. :P
The daily/Sunday express is owned by the same people who own OK magazine, and there content is ...somewhat similar
The RBR-STR news came from BobMcK. I'd say this is legit, sadly. :(
http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/106531/Bernie-s-warning-to-warring-teams
As mentioned in the previous show, it really depends what happens on Friday, but at the moment, probably not.
Hehehe. Two days ahead!
Ok well I am atm changed from live commenting to the Real-Time Doohickey for daily chat and Live commenting for race weekends and shows
I will be online tomorrow to chat about it.
What time do you think they will release the entry list and where?
No idea, the sooner the better so we can see what's going on behind the curtain so to speak. ;)
cool
Unfortunately you cant trust anything that comes out of that paper, well respected journalists have turned out rubbish there before, i would trust GMM over anything in that paper, no matter who wrote it.
It'll be on the FIA website, I'd imagine, but all the major news sites will pick it up straight away.
ok thanks
Which website do you look at for F1 news for the comments and for F1 minute
Bah, I know it's football (cue boos) but i can't believe how much coverage Manchester Utd accepted an £80million bid for Cristiano Ronaldo is getting, it's on the BBC's main news stories!
£80million for one man.... yeesh.
I look at
planetf1.com
autosport.com
bbc.com
f1.com
Perhaps man utd will run a cost capped team for 2 years?
Try this post:
http://www.sidepodcast.com/2009/02/03/f1-websites-you-can-trust/
LOL
i suggest setting up a news alert on google news or cnn or something.
Hahaha :)
BobMcK is the dad of LeeMcK, and has Bernie's ear. Bernie wouldn't trust him if he was just writing trash...
Video of Schumacher cruising around Fiorano in a 599GTB
The front of that car is u-g-l-y!
when i saw that there was a new video on the site, i was thinking it would be more interesting than it actually was.
I'm off up for a walk to tescos; who wants something? :P
pringles :)
I Know who he is, but i also know the paper. It had the same story on its front page for 97 days. It's football reports frequently make the wildest claims. It is a popularist gossip daily in my opinion.
Perhaps the biggest reflection of the paper's nature is the fact that its biggest rival, the daily mail is now the second biggest paper in the country.
that website has an english version - go down to the bottom left of the page, and click on the arrow. lots of great videos and things.
Can I have a new kettle? Or is that not what you meant?
In Le Mans news:
http://www.planetlemans.com/2009/06/11/aco-rejects-peugeot-protest-peugeot-appeals/
*might* just be out of my price range. ;)
pringles it is!
A kettle that sends you a tweet when it's finished boiling?
yeah! bad luck Christine. woohoo!!
Haha.
Wouldn't a USB kettle be a better option?
Darn it.
Good point. We'll have to check with Pat W though it was him who wanted it originally.
We haven't invented it yet, have we?
That's true :(
I forgot to mention this before when you were talking about plants on your blog the other week...
There is a plant on twitter. Really...
http://twitter.com/pothos
And an explanation of how to get it working...
http://tweethacking.com/twitter-hacks/twitter-hack-how-to-monitor-your-plants-with-botanicalls/
Wow... weird!
Ooh, Alex, thanks for the reminder yesterday btw :)
That's okay. I then promptly forgot to phone my dad!
But then somebody else at the office had their birthday yesterday and brought it cake and then I remembered!
Yesterday is a popular day!
well, to be frank, I do not know what I want to be true. if both sides stay firm, we know what the result will be. someone has to make some move. {Comment #72}
If both sides stand firm, F1 will have a very depleted grid in 2010 and won't exist in 2011. F2 and GP2 will then duke it out to become the successor (in both cases with the "2" replaced with a "1"). Both will claim to be the best series but Superleague will have the best car (assuming it still exists by then). NASCAR will laugh its collective head off and become the world's most popular motor sport.
If FOTA caves in, there will either be no F1 in 2011 or the FIA won't need regulations any more because everyone will know that that the series is totally subject to the vagaries of its whims.
If the FIA caves in, we will get F1 into the foreseeable future, albeit with a depleted grid until the recession recedes.
I want the latter solution, however unlikely it is while Mr Mosley remains in office.
There’s also a rumor that Wurz’s Superfund team may not make the cut, after the FIA saw it had some unpaid debt. {Comment #98}
How can it have unpaid debt? I thought it had only just come into existence?!?
This seems to be more opinion than fact... I cant see f1 being destroyed by a split, it makes too much money. Maybe It would be damaged, but i see it being a possitive thing.
I also see no logic as to how there will be no f1 whether FIA or FOTA do anything to compromise...
Perhaps man utd will run a cost capped team for 2 years? {Comment #115}
Perhaps Man Utd should get some practise in Superleague first?
Oh god... Can't we all watch Le Mans instead? But then I remember Peugeot's protest and realize they're also in some doo-doo.
This seems to be more opinion than fact… I cant see f1 being destroyed by a split, it makes too much money. {Comment #144}
It's not the split itself that would destroy F1. It's Article 7.3 b) in the Sporting Regulations, which the FIA's behaviour indicates won't be changed if it gets its way. Since no team can possibly comply with it under the budget cap, then anyone who's signed under the budget cap will be disqualified at the end of 2010. Quite how a series can survive the disqualification of every single participant is beyond me. Even if the money was there, nobody would want to partake of an impossible challenge.
Can’t we all watch Le Mans instead? {Comment #146}
We certainly can! However, NASCAR is better equipped marketeering-wise to tap the casual market.
If I were to guess, I'd say it's Superfund the company that has the debt. If my understanding is correct, Superfund will co-own the team with Wurz.
I can see it getting destroyed by a split. F1 is making money because the teams (Ferrari, McLaren, etc.) are there. Once they leave, so does the money. These teams will then try making their money somewhere else, either through a breakaway or by joining other series (like Le Mans).
I see it getting some people, but I don't think that many people will be interested to see cars go round ovals for 3 hours every weekend. And even they are starting to struggle with dropping audiences and TV ratings, thanks to a certain Jimmie Johnson and the drop in form of Dale Earnhardt, Jr.
The Le Mans Series has half-a-chance at going back to the big time, as long as it can get a good commercial deal.
Say happy birthday to:
Jackie Stewart, who turns 70, and
Jean Alesi, who turns 45.
NASCAR is far too American, and I don't think they would ever change, as it would risk their American fans. There is no history of oval racing outside of north america either.
NASCAR's southern US image is particularly unappealing in Europe. To succeed here the owners could launch a European touring car variant, like speedcar, but it will be very difficult to tempt the f1 crowd with such a different concept of racing.
Morning people. :D
I am writing a Quick Start Guide to Sidepodcast, for anyone new to the site to read. We understand it can be a bit daunting, and we're hoping the redesign will help, but I want to introduce a page with a quick overview of what we do and what you can do to get involved.
For any of the lovely new people who have joined us recently, what kind of things should I put on this page that would have helped? Were there any specific questions you could have been saved asking?
Agreed. They're way more likely to go the way of Le Mans or MotoGP than NASCAR, IMO.
Im back :) No kettles and pringles I'm afraid ;)
Sounds like an excellent idea :)
They didn't have any or you didn't get them?
i think the first line should be what amy came up with "surrender your life to us" ;)
They had no pringles! Not even the yucky original Pringles!
It was a Tesco Extra though.... but I'm surprised they had none.
Can you email a copy of that Guide so I can learn more about the world of sidepodcast
ma dai! [But, come on! in italian]
Long time Sidepodpeeps can answer to. We were all new once :)
It will be published on the site when it's finished.
I would write a strongly worded letter if I were you.
Dear tesco,
Oi.
Yours, Lukeh.
That should do it.
Argreed
I've gone near the wiki once. it scares me.
which part of the websites are active and when? eg when to use live commenting / real time doohickey.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU
How to quote things, when quoting things can be helpful etc.
Good questions :)
Why does the wiki scare you? It is the easiest wiki to use I've ever seen, if that helps. No nonsense languages to learn.
Ok i can do some suggestions, as i am still fresh off the boat!
1- include the live commenting solutions... which is obvious, so i guess you knew that :)
2- Explain what the daily post is, and how converstation moves to other threads for specific events
3- Link to the wiki and explain roughly what can be found in there.
4- Explain where reliable news can come from and where it doesn't
5- Explain who Frackanack is and why he spells his name that way :D
Maybe list the Names of all users that comment alot
He's French!
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/SPC+Regulars
Include the line "Do not feed the commenters" ?
i think there needs as section on sidepodtime. an elastic band analogy is probably best. we stretch it as much as we need to, when we need to, and sometimes it snaps so we has to go buy a new one.
also, assuming there's an faq:
- we go live as soon as technology allows us to. which may or may not be when we said it would be.
- the edited show will be available when it's available and not before.
- no, we don't know when we'll be speaking to joe.
No nachos :(
Can you add my birthday to the Birthdays listas 26th January
The beauty of the wiki is you can add yourself!
Talk about how shows are scheduled, and where people can go if they want to listen to the archives. :D
Explain the GMM thing-y. A lot of people tend to be surprised by that at first. ;)
And most of all, more than a podcast, this is a community. Tell them to be themselves and have fun. :)
You can edit it in yourself. :D
Ugh...just realised what it is on Tuesday...
it's a wiki. feel free to sign up and add it yourself.
?
how?
You haven't forgotten have you? ;)
heeeh!
*Tiptoes into regular's profile and adds the name 'Roland Garross'*
??
O.M.G!!!!
*Keeps quiet as this could be funny*
:)
I got through 4 Sidepodpanels in London yesterday :D
..some interesting opinions!
Naughty step!
bugger.
Sign up for a Wiki account, then click EasyEdit on the page you wish to edit. It kinda works like a Word doc once you've clicked it. When you're done, click Save. :D
I was right. :D
you did that on purpose you big meanie!
Wetpaint themselves have a great How To section: http://www.wetpaintcentral.com/
I don't think I can fit all that in the Quick Start Guide :)
Chaos! Panic! Disorder!
My work here is done! :D
Of course you remembered Mr C didn't you. What you didn't quite realise that Flibster was THAT old!
No, but that link could be handy :)
Although I am on thin ice myself!
I am that old... Hence the reason parts of me are falling to pieces...
hehe!
all wikis scare me. i prefer dictatorship where nothing is questioned ever. even if it's wrong. pretty much like my current work ;)
seriously - the wiki issue comes from laziness/managing addiction. but everything seems to be there - i just never look. it's like when you listen to podcasts and then maybe listen to podcasts and live comment a race, and then you become addicted and turn on non race days. to me, the wiki is the next step in the sidepodaddicition.
If I were to guess, I’d say it’s Superfund the company that has the debt. If my understanding is correct, Superfund will co-own the team with Wurz. {Comment #149}
Fair enough - that would make some sense.
just refer to it. why waste "ink" twice.
Ooooh... that'll hurt. Bad. :P
what you mean is... ooooh, that'll cost a lot to fix.
oh yes, it will. of course, you can just get a baby panda and make your life a lot easier. ;)
Especially as the Sims 3 is already commited for getting you off the naughty step!
It could be, I suppose. But I see it more as a reference place than somewhere that will suck you in.
Whats Sims3 like?
:D You need a windows mobile phone which will remind you for a month before the event happens - like mine. :D
Off the topic of MrC being in huge amount of trouble. ;) has anyone seen my copy of Blood Sugar Sex Magic by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers? I've got the case - but there is no CD....
On another subject Mr C...
Oddity on the Chrome front. I can see the same issue that the others were pointing out yesterday, but oddly if you minimise or are in another application it works perfectly. It's only switching tabs that it isn't recognising.
(And the sidepodcast tab has to be at the front when you give focus to the application)
See Sims and Sims 2 - just add better graphics.
Addictive!
we don't live in your house, y'know. :P hehe. :D
What spec is your computer, I have a netbook and I don't know if it will run it
Try this site: http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/referrer/srl ;)
I bet someone's put it back in the wrong case.
*looks at wall of CD cases...2700ish of them*
Bugger. :(
Where is that CD then?
I have a notebook too
Windows Vista Premium
2.1GHz dual Core
ATI Radeon HD 3200
Works fine for me, tad bit of slowdown and textures take a second or two to load when you start up but works fine.
Well my netbook is a 1.6GHz Atom Hyperthreaded, 1GB ram
I have the original sims and I am often tempted to play it. I want Sims 3 but don't have computer that will cope :(
What on the system requirements on the back of the case of Sims3
Unless you're on XP, it's likely it'll struggle quite badly
Yer XP Pro
What about my other laptop with a 1.46ghz Pentium Dual Core with 2GB of ram and 120GB hard drive
it's still another part of the experience, and I have enough with the stuff I appear in :)
Operating System
Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Windows Vista Service Pack 1
CPU Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent
2.0GHz (XP)
2.4GHz (Vista) [If built-in graphics chipsets then 2.6 GHz Pentium D CPU, or 1.8 GHz Core 2 Duo, or equivalent.]
Memory
1 GB (XP)
1.5GB (Vista)[If built-in graphics then add 0.5 GB additional RAM]
Hard Drive Space
6.1GB or more for extra content
Graphics Hardware
DirectX 9.0c compliant card with 128 MB RAM (NVIDIA FX 5900/ATI 9500 or better) and support for Pixel Shader 2.0
Sound Hardware
100% DirectX 9.0c compliant card
This site will tell you if you can run the game, just select "The Sims 3 - PC" from the dropdown ;)
ok cheers will have a look tonight when I get home
According to the site I need a more powerful CPU in order to play Sims 3
What CPU have you got
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T5550 @ 1.83GHz
Its the CPU speed that isn't fast enough, you need at least 2.0GHz.
Thats avery quick CPU
James allen says the bosses of Red Bull, ferrari and toyota are meeting Mosley in london today.
In a basement....
sabers at dawn?
COOL
Lets hope they get stuff sorted
I think he's interested in a new Yaris, He is also in the market for a nice Ferrari sweatshirt (Red) and i believe a beverage company is providing refreshment
Interesting ... this is what John Howett said to Autosport a day or two ago:
Q. Are there plans for FOTA to talk to the FIA this week?
JH: I don't think we resist doing that. I think Flavio [Briatore] was discussing that possibility and received information that it would be ill-advised to have a meeting before Friday. So I don't know. We remain open to discuss, but I think our position is fairly firm on the criteria that we wish to be resolved.
John Howett is who exactly? BMW?
Toyota
Toyota boss and vice chairman of FOTA
And even they are starting to struggle with dropping audiences and TV ratings, thanks to a certain Jimmie Johnson and the drop in form of Dale Earnhardt, Jr. {Comment #150}
What did Jimmie Johnson do to cause the problem?
Came from California
it's a stranglely worded comment "have been detailed"? so planned but sounds like that was decided yesterday.
>Three of the team bosses have been detailed to attend the meeting, Ferrari’s Stefano Domenicali, Red Bull’s Christian Horner and Toyota’s John Howett.
have we discussed ant's snaps on autosport?
ha! awesome.
darren turner and ant davidson in a childrens playhouse is a strange thing to see....
Verry cool, perhaps he will take some to keep him awake going down those straights!
Say happy birthday to:
Jackie Stewart, who turns 70, and
Jean Alesi, who turns 45. {Comment #151}
Happy birthday, Jackie and Jean!
i like the idea of a archibald flippy-flop driving a brm.
just sayin'.
See Sims and Sims 2 - just add better graphics. {Comment #218}
Must remember to start playing Sims 2 again, now that I've caught up on my Turkey obligations...
Building costs have fallen, but 70%? I think he may have decided to make the grandstand out of bolser wood, and the podium out of old tyres
hehe. might be a case of byogs.
Posted this tweet last night, just remembered now looking on my phone I took a photo at the time I tried to twitpic but never worked. Looking outside today it's blue skies, warm, light winds, gotta love the erratic weather sometimes :D
Moley Moley Mole
http://www.grandprix.com/mole/mole21554.html
only one paragraph in and now I want a cup of tea and some biscuits :(
:)
Nice to Mole you
Here is my first draft:
http://www.sidepodcast.com/about/new-to-sidepodcast-quick-start-guide/
For a quick start guide... it's quite long.
I like it, its a shame he didn't take up my idea of 4 races in north America per year, but knocking off the IRL with F1 is still a big opportunity, I cant see bernie doing that, but a breakaway could.
Gillet sums it all up by saying he's a businessman first and doesn't give two hoots about history.
Something about Donnington worries me, I would want to see a Britsh GP for sure but i'd feel really angry giving him my hard earned money. Silverstone has many faults but I just love the place!! Although I am lucky enough to live only 15 miles away and get to lots of events........
and has won 3 titles in a row - gunning for 4 in a row this year. that's triggered discussion among fans that NASCAR is becoming boring. which may be partly true as well thanks to that Car of Tomorrow which has made overtaking even more difficult.
:D :D :D
Wow, I spelled his name wrong. That's terrible!
Love it!
seconded.
I stopped short of saying 'This means you, Nick.'
Now, it seems that Max's "wiggle room" sways very close to what FOTA want or are willing to compromise to. Hopefully, this means that even if Max stays in, FOTA will get the rules that they want.
Thirded, if such a word exists
i think he might be close to losing this one (which would be a first). thoughts?
I'll just go with 'what everyone else said' :P
i would probably change: "We don’t encourage the linking of GMM stories"
to: We don’t encourage the linking of syndicated news stories
just because there are some others (and will likely be more in the future).
also, voicemail could probably do with a mention.
Although maybe in that case it should be a blend like...
We don’t encourage the linking of syndicated news stories (for example GMM)
Not everyone will know what syndicated news stories are I guess
The one on 0121 28 TRACK?
better :)
I was about to suggest that :P
that's the one. or +44 121 28 87225 (if you prefer).
Random fact of the day: I know Pixie Lott's father.
Or it can be found on Skype under the user name Sidepodcast
i heard that. we wanted to be ex-directory... but y'know ;)
 Thank you!
But a very good post, I even learnt a thing or 2.
Yup, that sounds just about perfect. :)
i sure hope so! with lotus, brabham, and maybe even superfund in trouble, max's hopes of a crony-populated grid are pretty slim. but this will ultimately be a compromise. there will be no definitive winner (I think), but some will fare better than others.
we'll probably find out by tonight... late tonight.
Wouldn't want the sidepodpony to get an sms :D
you reckon?
i'm thinking it'll still be tomorrow at the earliest.
Knowing Max... negotiation's all day tomorrow, break down at 6pm, rumours of another meeting at 10 pm. Entry list issued at 11:35 with all current teams on it.
"because there will be others who aren’t interested to talk to"
you mean, "interested to talk about it"?
otherwise, it's a brilliant starter kit. :D
could be, but the FIA have a penchant of releasing things in the afternoon (usually late afternoon, but it's been released earlier), so this will probably get settled tonight.
of course, given the gravity of this situation, it can easily spill over to tomorrow. as long as this gets settled amicably tomorrow, i'm cool with it. any later than tomorrow and i'll probably go nuts...
Will do.
Um, do I? Why would they talk about it if they're not interested?
Ohhh... reading your sentence in a different way, I get what you mean now.
Carry on. ;)
It could probably do with rewriting though, will have a look :)
Did we see this?
Simon Gillette saying he has a 17 year contract for Donnington!
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/76007
Not to mention the man is a genie in a bottle and he has cut 70% of the construction costs! :D
Teds notebook FTW!
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/f1mole/2009/06/ted-kravitz-the-turkish-gp-fro.html
That sounds an awful lot like the 100-year commercial deal Bernie got from Max. Why the heck would Bernie give him a 17-year deal? That doesn't exactly put pressure on Mr. Gillett to keep a high standard of quality...
finally!
yaaaaaay! :)
he hates the brdc that much? the contract (if real) will no-doubt out live him.
It's the only way the debenture thing would work.
interesting comment on vettel:
"He almost did it, too. The first sector was the quickest of the race, but Vettel messed up the last few corners and fell short of Button's fastest lap by a 10th of a second."
the boy has a lot still to learn then.
why would bernie care about that?
Ted agreeing with me (you know what I mean) that it was more about the Brawn diffuser slowing down Vettel than anything else.
It probably has more exit clauses than (insert metaphor).
e.g. If FOM management changes, If FOM's owners change, It DPV's management or ownership changes, If attendances don't meet x-level, amongst others
Thats not to say they would be used, but im sure Bernie can leave when he wants to and at the same time brag he has secured the future of the British grand prix.
Because that's how Gillette could pay for it without Government money.
Aha, so we're all talking about it then!!
How are we all?
again. why would bernie care?
it doesn't make any sense. the man only cares about his race fee income, and a huge lease like that reduces his bargaining position.
the only thing i can think of is if there are agreed-upon times to renegotiate the price within the 17-year period - every 4 years, for example. basically, bernie gave gillett a 17-year guarantee to host the GP, but the price would vary...
also from ted:
"It is not know when or if Williams might race their flywheel but they are already marketing it for other transport applications."
which i think was always a given, but shows that williams are no longer a team who "exist only to race".
frank might like to lean on that phrase while defending his fota exclusion, but the truth is williams are expanding outside of f1, just as mclaren did before them.
:P I set him straight with a comment
cal me a cynic, but i don't believe it. no doubt it suits bernie and simon to be saying this publicly, right now, but i'm not buying a word of it.
hey Everyone, Back from lunch
What if the words were in the app store?
ehehehehe.
Welcome back from lunch
Thanks
Silverstone didn't pay enough. Bernie wanted more money. Government won't pay. Contract with teams say he has to have a British Grand Prix. Gillette says I'll pay you a load more but you'll have to give to give me a long contract. Why? Because I'm going to sell debentures. Did you see what happened at Wimbledon? The Arsenal Stadium? We could be make a tonne of cash as long as you make sure we have some strong British drivers Bernie...
From Ted's Turkey diary:
Now that contradicts the established thinking. But I still wonder how hard they really pushed last year...
That's why he is TED NEWS!
agreed.
That makes Gillett either a genius or a fool... We shall see how it turns out...
he's a fool.
:)
Just read the "new to SPC guide-thingy-bob-ness"
Really good :)
The debenture scheme is interesting, but i am not convinced it will work:
1) Only 1 event per year which corporate types will care about (also companies that buy debentures to let them out)
2) It doesn't have the 'ticket exclusivity' of Wimbledon, tickets are pricey, but available for even this years British Grand Prix
3) Debenture schemes work well at places like the millennium stadium and Wembley as they have seats which are defiantly better, ok being on the main straight by the line is an advantage, but it inst the same as getting great seats for the football, and having that familiar seat once a month.
4) Long term support in stadium sports is easier as you know your team will be there for the duration of your ticket, who knows what teams and drivers will be doing in f1 next year, let alone 17! there could be no British divers in f1 in 7 years time, then what?
If todays meeting in londons sorts everything in F1 here is my prediction for the entry list tomorrow:
Ferrari
McLaren
Force India
Williams
Red Bull
STR
Prodrive
USF1
Brawn GP
BMW
Briatore GP (Management buyout of Renault by Flavio)
Missing 2 teams..they want 13.
just to check, but doesn't this scheme also include a garage so you can race your own cars on the track. Or did that change?
Fixed it for you :D
:D
Who would you add to the list:
Toyota are a 50/50 maybe
Oh i didn't know that, i was going on the assumption it was just a grandstand seat
Chris, you still have 2 vacant spots. I say they'll be taken by Toyota and... hmmmm, Lola or Lotus? Hmmm... I'll say Lola.
am not sure either. things may have changed anyhow.
Lotus are not going to be in F1 they have started legal action
not lotus.
Against what? They can do nothing.
Team Lotus is owned by David Hunt - not by Lotus
From reading the Guide earlier, I read the potted history which led me back to the megamix.
Two points
1) Valencia was boring last year... This year... Oh god!
2) Paskis' voicemail rang very true and is and was amazing...
http://www.sidepodcast.com/2008/12/26/episode-88-2008-season-review-megamix/
I agree with you it's flawed. But I think that was the reason he got the gig!
they can tie them up in a protracted legal battle long enough to kill any f1 aspirations.
I love this comment on crash.net's article:
http://www.crash.net/formula+one/news/148144/1/stoddart_predicts_biggest_single_shock_in_f1_history.html
Love it! I hope he's right, though.
For what? Legally using a name that Lotus have no rights to?
maybe we should all boycott it. go to the beach or something?
no podcast, no live commenting. pretend it's not happening?
Ooooh.
Martin Brundle should boycott Valencia instead of Hungaroring. Not to mention that Valencia is the type of circuit custom-made for the Brawn...
No podcast should be possible. No live commenting would be rather more difficult... :D
I know lou's going on holiday when Valencia is on, perhaps she's got the idea? :P
Who knows, Valencia could become the sidepodcast equivalent of Brundle's lack of Hungary visits...
We'd just switch it off?
team lotus contains the word lotus, right? that's probably more than enough to keep a bunch of suits in work for a good 12-18 months.
team lotus will not race in f1 in 2010. it's not going to happen.
I am scared. Someone hold me.
if that was the decision, then it's just a flick of a switch to turn off all commenting for the weekend. guess it depends what people think?
me thinks it might be quite fun if we did something interesting instead.
:D
Amy, didn't you plan on watching all the races this season? Valencia will be your ultimate test - especially if we all decide to hie off to the beach. :D
The thing is that I know that in reality a lot of people will still watch it. And during a boring race the only things that keep us sane are the comments.
we'd probably all boycott it and it would turn out to be the best race of the season. Maybe Piquet would crash into the water.
The Great Sidepodexperiment? Ooooh... :D
I barely watched the last half of Turkey, but it was on my TV. Does that count? I can totally do that for Valencia too :D
did you just say "sane" and "the comments" in teh same sentance?
So why haven't they sued IBM then? ;)
There is no company called Lotus, there is Group Lotus, Lotus Cars, Lotus Engineering and Team Lotus
Team Lotus was disbanded in 1994 and the right to use the name Team Lotus was sold to David Hunt. He can use it in pretty much any way he wants. He's given permission for Litespeed to use it for their F1 entry.
You make a very good point there. :D
Or Kimi would hie off to his yacht... ;)
The only reason I am even remotely interested in the Valencian GP is to see whether that green building is still there.
I do not know of which building you speak.
You have Roger Federer to thank for barely watching Turkey. He won't be able to save you in Valencia. ;)
:)
they're not racing cars?
Where's the green building anyway? The only remarkable features in Valencia are the paddock and the bridge.
I hear it's green
And the green building. It was VERY green
I am trying to think of the last race that I did pay full attention to the last 50% of, and struggling to be honest. Bad fan. Bad bad fan.
"The organisers of the Le Mans 24 Hours have thrown the door open for any of Formula 1's manufacturers to compete in the French classic - and they have even been offered the chance to help shape future regulations."
:D :D :D
how ironic
I am thinking I need to pull out my 2008 review and watch out for this building. I can't even remember who won the race though so it's no surprise I don't recall the scenery. Actually, I got a kick out of seeing the Team New Zealand building, that one I do recall.
It's the green one. Between the crane and the building site.
I'm guessing this is because neither of us were live commenting here the last time they were in Valencia. :D
Le Mans must seriously be hoping F1 self-destructs, then they can get LDM to announce Ferrari's move to Le Mans before he waves them off on Saturday...
Where did you see this?
You won't miss it. It's a kind of green colour!
I was at the pub, I remember drinking more that race than any other. I blame this for my memories. Seriously, who won it? Was it Massa? Who was on the podium?
the only notable feature in acres and acres of industrial concrete.
AUTOSPORT
there's a crane and a building site down the road from where i'm working now... :D
Which was gray. And this building was a different colour...
Green.
i recall a bunch of people going nuts about the fia favouring ferrari.
ahh, nostalgia.
#f1nostalgia?
Yup, Massa from Hamilton and... was it Kubica? I remember Kimi's engine blowing itself to smithereens...
I found it!!
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/lovelygreenbuilding
ahh yes. must do that later :)
Wow, that is green
I see what you mean when you say it's green
who paints a building green?
Ah yes there it is!
It's quite green!
Another view, a little less green, but still green:
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/djm0826jy991
my word.
The same people who paint tyres green?
has it been that long ago that you called them FIArrari? the times, they are a-changing, indeed. :D
ahh yes.
i never did actually.
perhaps this year they will be an even brighter green to help us see it clearer, but have no effect
oh. maybe i should use 'they', then. i remember seeing FIArrari here once or twice...
anyway, from the AUTOSPORT article on today's FIA-FOTA meeting:
morning?! wow, they're early risers. if that's true, then it really has to be settled tonight, then, no matter how late...
I have found the original comment as well:
http://www.sidepodcast.com/2008/08/22/live-commenting-europe-free-practice-1/#comment-93461
this year, they'll only paint the sides.
agreed. unexpected, but appreciated all the same.
:)
so it turns out there was a McLaren on the podium. I have no recollection of this. None. At. All.
ooh and Heikki was 4th. You'd think this would have excited me at the time as he was "almost 3rd". Still don't remember this.
that's your brain's self defense mechanism.
I just watched the 'highlights' on F1.com and I remember 1 or 2 things like the Ferrari pitstop + driving almost into the force india... but that's it! The rest was like watching a new race.
I am 4 minutes into an 11 minute recap and I'm already bored of concrete. This does not bode well for this year.
Did you notice any strangely coloured buildings?
maybe you were disappointed that he could only manage 4th the race after his first F1 win?
You are all very brave. I remember none of it, and do not wish to inflict it upon myself either.
You never know...it might be a good rac....oh no it wont will it, we're screwed
this is possible. If only I had realised earlier that being a Heikki fan is constant disappointment.
the problem we have, is we already named all the corners :(
Very true. Maybe we could name the cranes too.
:)
i'm surprised his first race didn't tell you that...
wasn't that his brother?
try naming the yachts? have you given the bridge and your green building a name?
All 2 of the yachts? ;)
In iTunes there is a graphical equalizer bit at the top now where the track name and time remaining used to be. I know I must have stupidly changed a setting somewhere. How can I change it back? Any ideas?
what about giving the corners surnames?
The supertankers then ;)
Should be a little thing arrow to the right of it, click that :P
AUTOSPORT have given some Le Mans drivers each a camera, so they've got photos they've taken. They're really good (except Alex Wurz boo @ him)
http://lemans.autosport.com/snaps/
:)
Oops, it's on the left even. Must remember my rights and lefts.
Don't boo him. He is my best chance of seeing a picture of Franck over there.
:o
how dare you
I only boo him because he hasnt taken any pictures, the other 2 drivers have lots!
I think the trick is to have a sunny day. Even the sky was the same colour as the track.
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/vlcsnap-1115313-png
That's a good point. Where are my pictures of Franck? Booo!
Cool thanks! That is the worst bit of Apple design I think I've ever seen. It's not obvious at all and it doesn't change state once you've clicked it!
Rubbish!
But thank you :)
I knew you'd see the light :D
*shudders* MAybe they should go with a nautical theme or something and paint waves on the concrete. Anything would be better... even some youfs with canz
green stripes on the concrete?
Like the building maybe they should paint the whole track green. That'd keep everyone happy.
I mean it doesn't even have a tool tip!
Kimi knows how to make it look better. Lets follow the whole race from his onboard (I don't remember this happening either)
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/vlcsnap-1118546-png
I like the nautical theme. All of the drivers would have to have a beard for the weekend and smoke pipes and wear galoshes instead of their usual suits.
Stimpes migh make the driver a little dizzy...
On second thought that might make something happen!
That would be the smoke from his engine exploding....
last year the corners confused alonso. he forget which was which.
Haha, also they should replace their steering wheel with a big old ship wheel, and have to race in a standing posoition
but I can't see the track so I like it.
i think you have your prioritys alll mixed up ;)
Me too.
Yes!
And they have to bring their race engineer with them who shovels coal into and boiler. And smoke comes out of a stovepipe!
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/76013
:)
If that's not a sign of a bad circuit i don't know what is....
(but i blame the eyebrows for impeding his vision)
Apart from buried into a barrier. ;)
so that's what you do for a living.
At this precise moment - I'm considering going shopping.
My work life is that busy. :D
I watched the 2008 highlights before. Some lovely in car shots of his leg, as mentioned in last years live thread.
WHAT??
A leg and a glove is pretty much all I saw of Franck last year. That's enough though :)
When he stuffs it they'll show some nice close ups for you.
christine... the man clearly hasn't read the newbie's guide?
noob!
You are SO on the naughty step
I have - and I have no fear. :D
:D
The naughty step is too good for Flibster.
:D
mod queue?
From the BBC
So who remembers him? :)
Noob went in the dictionary earlier this week. They went for n00b as the official spelling.
Mr C got to get of it when i went on, does this mean i am allowed off now? :)
The naughty bucket?
ahh, sorry yes. like w00t! apologies.
Did they put 'pwnd' in or is it just an alternate spelling?
means something different?
Not being critical I thought it was interesting. I didn't know they would let numbers in like that. But then the millionth word in the english language (according to the OED this all is) is "Web 2.0" which isn't a word - it's a phrase.
I told someone about that this morning.
Their responce - Numpties!
True but its a corruption more than a new word
I thought Steven Roy let you off during his brief time in charge?
w00t!
Sorry, im going to deviate from f1, but something just struck me, the right to register Ronaldo was just sold for £80million.
You can buy the entire Newcastle, team, club and stadium forjust £20 million more @ £100 million.
Mental.
+ 60million wages... shocking.
little winker.
Eeeeehehe.
Has this been mentioned?
http://www.planet-f1.com/story/0,18954,3213_5373971,00.html
It came from the express, i don't think its reliable enough without another source.
Ronaldo to buy F1 team? ;)
Unfortunately he doesn't get the money, but Man Utd could.... Although Newcastle were the last team to go racing and.. well...
I can see the races now, someone touches the side of the car slightly, and the car spins out and all 4 wheels fall off. And the rear wing shatters.
And the streeting wheel jumps out.
It would be the most overdramatic team ever. Imagine if they got penalised! Diving pit crew!
*steering
Unnamed laughter powered aircraft at full speed
i think f1 is missing some of that.
Isn't Joe in a cheery mood about the state of F1 at the moment...
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/06/11/the-only-question-that-matters-in-f1/
Can I just say, that is pretty much as annoying as saying the unmentionable in the first place? :)
8O oops
Could try ULPA?
how about
Hardeyharharhar!
http://www.itv-f1.com/News_Article.aspx?id=46108
I can honestly say I've never heard of him before. :D
I like this picture:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/picturegalleries/5478427/Turkish-GP-F1-diary-photo-gallery.html?image=4
Nelson going off in quali makes sense now, he was aiming for the helicopter :D
looks like they are racing,
I remember when i used to watch class 1 powerboats, the helicopters could never keep up with them on the straights!
we talked about him on the last aside with joe. he's the costcutter.
Ah right, but then Renault in general seem to want costs cut.
This is how KERS should have worked: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/picturegalleries/5478427/Turkish-GP-F1-diary-photo-gallery.html?image=5
We can see it working :P
For some reason i have an overwhelming urge to call him the cookiecutter.
:D
coool!
hmm I should probably go to bed, I don't want to be late for work 2 days in a row :D
night all
now ive gotten myself addicted to saying out loud. coo-kie-cut-ter
Night Amy, Murray is winning if that helps you get to sleep :P
Ugh. He's taken out my optimism. Can the FIA and FOTA prove him wrong, however? After all, Joe himself said that their positions aren't really too far apart...
Awfully quiet round here...
Shhh
That is allowed, you know.
I think its an unholy combination of people actually doing work, or being tempted into the outdoors by the sun
i was enjoying the peace.
I wasn't saying it isn't, it's just that it rarely happens... ;)
*points at xbox*
his fault i'm quiet!
One has to work to keep Sidepodcast in the manner to which it has become accustomed.
BTW, RBR (and by extension STR) have denied that they have signed up unconditionally for 2010. But apparently, they have a similar agreement to that of FI, Ferrari, and Williams, so they may be placed on the entry list anyway...
Hehe, until the IPO...
That just leaves Mclaren, Brawn, and the teams which are leaving :D
I wouldn't be surprised if Max decides to give the champions-elect a free spot as well. That would leave McLaren, Renault, BMW, and Toyota.
Its not that they want a spot, they will all be arguing to be kept out next week!
True, true. All or nothing.
I do feel sorry for people like peter Windsor today though, they have probably put a lot of effort into making a submission, not only do they not know if they are in, but if there will be anyone to race if they are in...
Ewwwwwwww. I have just found out there were Vanilla flavoured Monster Munch!
What time does Le Mans quali start?
Watching a Zandvoort track guide with Renger Van Der Zande
"Try to destroy your Formula 3 car here and you will be the quickest...."
hmm
6pm
Your time? I see... Just got a bit confused since the RLM website has it as 5 PM. I don't know if that was Le Mans time or BST.
5pm Build up and 6pm Quali live according to RLM
I see. Alrighty. ;) I wonder what time it'll start on Eurosport, though. 6, I guess.
It'll have some sort of build up i'd think, 5.30 maybe? 5.45. not sure
Brawn are the 5th most successful team on the f1 grid at the moment.
Jus saying...
Haha, that dosent say much about the other teams does it ;)
official le mans website
and if we're lucky, the feed will be here like yesterday
Eurosport tv guide
it says 8pm GMT, for action, with 10 minutes build up before it.
all-time? just behind ferrari, mclaren, williams, and benetton/renault...
I just went by the current teams. But i think it holds for the previous iterations of the current teams too...
schedule for the next few days note: in local time
http://www.formula1.com/video/onboard.html
Turkey onboard is up - and it's from Kimi Raikkonen.
Race edit should be out momentarily.
cheers sir.
i guess they're getting sick of seeing "Button Button Button" like i was ;)
on Murray's latest blog they show a shot of Flavs yacht at 3:56ish I haven't seen that before, and had no idea it was that big! I thought they were on the ground level!
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/murraywalker/2009/06/my_turkish_grand_prix_moments.html
Heh. Or Vettel...
Kimi's lap is good to see where he used the KERS. He used it before he even crossed the line to start his flying lap. He used majority of it at the exit of Turn 9/10, but he left a little for the final run to the line...
surprised he used on the downhill exit of t1 though?
*replays the vid*
would you look at that, he did use a bit of it. maybe it's because that was a downhill bit, so he wanted to maximize whatever boost he'd get from the downslope?
great to see KERS! i was a little surprised too that he used it then. he seemed more focused on using KERS out of the last corner than getting a smooth entry - seemed a little ?stunted?
i love "Not available in your region" but then they give a special link at the bottom for non-uk people. hurrah!
Watching the on board of Silverstone... I didnt realise how much of the track was absolute high speed corners. And how old it looks. Red bull should win this one although people have been saying that for a while.
Perhaps that's without the FOM footage?
They have the car to win it - but it's Button who's feeling right at home. I'd still give Jenson the nod, if only because he's on a tear right now...
yeah it has a fair few photos. i didn't get Flavio's boat either - wasn't watching fully but apart from murray, it seems a slideshow.
I guess they are being really careful, but the boat shot was BBC, not FOM
Awwww man... in the Henri Lloyd shops in Manchester and Liverpool next week, there's gonna be a Brawn GP showcar :(
And thats a bad thing?
Ok the one in Liverpool will probably get nicked, but wouldn't mind seeing the Manchester one...
Yes! I wanna go see it! :P
they legally have to be. sad but true. when i watched the bbc world service (here in italy) the sport reports were so annoying because all you got was still photos most of the time. i caught cnn this morning and it was so nice for me to see english language sport coverage with film. don't take it for granted people :)
This must be the most racing-packed non-F1 weekend of the year:
Le Mans 24 Hours
WRC Rally Acropolis
F3 Masters at Zandvoort
Something for everyone.
BTCC at Croft, which I hopefully shall be going to.
Hey everybody
Hello RG.
are you guys the same person? ;)
Evening Mr Garross!
not this again... :P
Please dont, that was so confusing to read though at 1am!
Grrrrr.
Not that again, I don't think I've recovered yet
:D
Isn't Garros single s? :D
it was confusing when i wrote it ;) apologies. i was in a strange mood. nothing too abnormal there ;)
Ah, tis :)
Erg - the RLM audio stream doesn't wanna work. It was doing fine yesterday...
works for meee
(from f1live.com)He [Mosley] also confirmed speculation that another highly-paid employee per team, for example Red Bull's car designer Adrian Newey, can be left outside the cap. so what will be under the cap?
I just realised I'm going to away from the net for a fair amount of tomorrow. how annoying. might sign up for an sms service....
Doohickey works for the iPhone and iPod Touch... otherwise, yup, you'll have to make do with an SMS service.
in non f1 news - the influenza is officially a pandemic. feels kind of cool to be part of one of these. normally the worst viruses i've seen are on a computer. we're going retro.
SidepodSMS?
first pandemic in 40+ years. i think this isn't as bad as the last one, though.
It will never win, Madagascar shut its port a long time ago.
i'm waiting till i get near the us before buying anything electrical. i've lived without my ipod for a month or two, and i'll need a new phone....might get me one of these new toys...
Shut.
Down.
EVERYTHING!
for italy, i struggled to find an f1 fan around my work. really disappointing. but now i know a couple of f1 fans who i can message when the races are on over the supremacy of white on red.
Morning/Afternoon anyone.
So since the entry list is coming tommorow, do we want to play a guessing game of who is going to be on that list?
not yet ;)
as far as I know, there is no schedule for when it will appear.
guessing game? depends if there was a meeting today or not - really hard to find anything about if a few team bosses met today or not.
Too addictive, and eating up my productivity
http://www.mousebreaker.com/games/topspinner2020/playgame
I'm up for a guess
1. Force India
2. Williams
3. Prodrive
4. USF1
5. Brabham
6. Lotus
7. March
8. Superfund
9. Rahal
10. Ferrari*
11. Red Bull*
12. Torro Rosso*
13. McLaren**
* Unconditional entries from these teams are assumed due to prior contracts
** McLaren enter without conditions, but without suspending their FOTA entry somehow due to a mix up between what they've said to everyone.
Leaving Renault to buy out Lotus or March for Briatore to run without their name on it (a la Honda Brawn). Brabham could be the spot Bernie has saved for Brawn. Toyota and BMW leave with nothing.
Rahal made an entry? And where's Lola?
Am a bit surprised they'd be left empty-handed, but I wonder how they'd react if this was indeed what happened...
http://www.atdhe.net/7219/watch-24-hours-of-le-mans
Channel is on, but it's not Le Mans yet...
Ah I was struggling at that point. I'll change to Lola instead of Rahal. There were rumours of a Rahal entry but nothing announced.
There is a weird thing where many of the people the FIA didn't contract to stay in F1 BMW, Renault, Toyota happen to be the people most likely to not want to continue funding it. that was my thought.
England x Cricket = FAIL
no disagreement there ;)
England x Any sport (Except Cycling) = FAIL
go on then:
1. williams
2. fif1
3. brawngp
4. red bull
5. usf1
6. mclaren
7. prodrive
8. flav's team
9. lola
10. someone who will buy str (maybe carlos slim?)
i'm guessing all the others will fail due-dilligence.
England x Any sport (Except Cycling with Cavendish) = FAIL
are there others?
why not go all the way to 13?
we must be good at darts?
because i think the rest are full of... wind.
Its a sport?
go up to thirteen?!!!
man you're crazy
:D :P
anything that can be played inside a pub is a game not a sport ;) (start the debate)
more than f1 is.
so you're skipping the manufacturers on purpose, even ferrari?
haha, and the other cyclists, we OWN cycling
dan asked who'd be on the list. that's my guess as to who'll be on it tomorrow.
i don't follow a lot of cycling, although i did get to see to the giro ;)
i think ferrari will be on it tomorrow, whether they like it or not. mclaren, on the other hand, may not...
i'm pretty sure there is no set time for tomorrow's release but has anyone else heard anything?
Track cycling we are AMAZING at. Road cycling we're ok at, tour de france....not so good
At least their is some variety of location and procedure in F1
Hmmm...
Darts is the British equivalent of NASCAR!
i think if max can't have his way, he'll go for shock and awe instead.
no ferrari, no major motor manufacturer.
AUTOSPORT said it'll be released in the morning.
All I can say is A HUNDRED AND EIGHTY
what about nicole cooke? I only know because she comes from my hometown and they always seem to mention her road cycling stuff on the news :D
:D
aah. missed that ;) thanks.-
It is not.
Yeah, she's ok. Road cycling isn't our strong point, but i think she won the olympic road cycling
because montoya would be good at it?
I think there's more chance of Ferrari being on the list than McLaren.
Because while I agree Max might go for your method if he does then McLaren won't worry about being left behind as much. Whereas I think McLaren are basically saying, "where Ferrari is we are"
Agreed, it's not that bad
:)
:D Any supporting evidence?
oh he;d fit in wonderfully
tis true. but how major a name is mclaren to the general public?
renault, toyota, ferrari and bmw are surely a bigger headline?
The commenatator is awesome for a start. Then you got the personalities and the action.
Are you talking about Darts or NASCAR?
Darts
Mercedes - Is the big bit.
However... The key part of the negotiation is on the one hand
McLaren really don't do anything else. I know they do more than Williams but honestly?
and
Max wants those Mercedes engines.
i'm heading off folks. have a great night/morning. enjoy le mans and see you tomorrow for an interesting day.
Also I don't think Brawn can be on a list that doesn't include the manufactuers. Max has contracts that say certain of them have essentially entered and he may massage them in. But Brawn haven't.
And Brawn is in part being bankrolled by the other manufacturers.
hehe, Ok but the more i think about it, the more my theory makes sense :D
i agree. which is why i think mclaren will be on the list.
But they don't want to be on the list!
but brawn are the model team for max's cost cutting plans.
and ross' bound to have a plan b), c) and d).
Who's going to pay the €50 fine?
what fine?
Yes. I think he does have one... That's why on my list I guessed Brabham or somebody was a dummy team for Brawn.
That's my guess. He's in both ways. But the other team will be on the list tomorrow.
fair point.
According to several sources the manufacters have signed an agreement saying they won't break from FOTA. And that if they do they'll have to pay the other members €50m
i read somewhere, that the agreement was voided because it's illegal under EU monopoly rules? may not be correct though.
It would have to go to court, I think it would be very difficult for an outside party to prove it was void, but it might also be very difficult for the remaining teams to enforce it through the courts, unless they have already paid into a bond or something.
Max warned that he was going to refer them to the monopoly rules. Jon from Toyota said that they had already made sure their agreement was within those rules and that one of the teams had gone as far as to ask the EU if it was ok (it was)
Here we are:
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/75963
He's John ;)
I shall not share my name with anyone ;)
Sorry that was a typo. Of course you are the only Jon!
:D
haha, FakeMartinB has used Piquet in his sentance...
"A small chance of a wet British GP, lets hope Kimi and Felipe baby don't have another Piquet of a race"
Sidepodwatcher? I think so
There's only one Jon Waldock! There's only one Jon!
There's only one Jon Waldock! There's only one Jon!
There's only one Jon Waldock! There's only one Jon!
;)
:D
it brings all my school days back, i had my own chants and everything :)
ahh cool.
So I'm not the only one then
I think max has 3 options if no agrement is made tonight.
1)Nuclear: No FOTA teams
2)Divisive: Pick FOTA teams who have agreements + reserve a spot for championship team
3)Compromising: Admit FOTA subject to a future agreement (e.g. By the end of the month)
i had many :D
ooh, he likes his deadlines.
I didn't know Franck's Number 8 is on provisional pole... Well, I do know. ;)
Actually this is quite likely... He's been "saying all long" (read since last week) that there isn't time to get the Concorde agreement signed.
So say it's subject to the concord agreement coming in in a month.
There is aloooooooooong way to go with quali
ANOTHER deadline? Will it never end? :(
Indeed, but still, at least we know they have the pace. :D
They're usually faster over 1 lap, but less reliable and less good in the pits.
Audi are slower, but still flipping quick, and very reliable and very good in the pits.
are we keeping track of SC at le mans? just spotted this one:
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/76024
no franck news as yet though.
Safety Car? Is Bruno Driving it?
stuart c. sorry.
lol!
The other Mr C.
doesn't that make you the other mrs. c. too?
I dunno. He calls his Mrs C, Mrs C, which makes him a Mr C.
Yeah the other Mr C's Mrs C is the other Mrs C. Our Mrs C is Christine. And you, Mr C, are our Mr C. :)
Lou found this...
http://transmission.blogs.topgear.com/2009/06/11/series-13-preview-one-for-the-boys-and-girls/
TG back next sunday
That took a while for me to get. :P
That's what I thought, yea :)
so many c's :(
This is turning into the Journeyer-RG-Scott thing again isn't it?
Cant we all just have one name
Let the live show battle commence... :(
Is anyone watching the Quallty for Le Mans
Oh gawd. Bang goes the SPC schedule.
I think it is having one name that is causing the problem!
I am...
Listening to it
Cool same here
I think it's Mr C being Mr C that's the problem. I think it was easier when he was me :)
But I like Mr C being Mr C cos Mr C is a nice name, for Mr C.
Yup.
That girl in the pitlane is cute. :D
Naughty Bucket!
And she's French... :D
Watching on Eurosport.
Annoyed they are only choosing the French drivers
aha. it's jeremy's fault then.
It really wasn't!
Erm, isn't Franck French?
bugger. what time is it on?
Technically yes. I'm not bringing in the fact I was the first one to start saying it.
I think Jeremy blames Steven!
That was my point!
I think it's clear that this is Mr C's fault :)
r.g. fault.
which mr. c is that?
Can't have everything... ;)
:D
Codling...
Oh no you almost made me confused.
YOU!
Not my fault. It was Amy.
Evening all
What? Just for saying that a girl is cute?
Why can't we just call him, I dunno, Stuart?
Anyone have a video stream?
because we don't know his better half's name.
Same as last time. ;)
Oooh, how about, I dunno, Mrs Codling?
Maybe it should be Mrs Stuart?
Cant she be Mrs C, then Christine can be Christine, you can be Mr C, and he can be stuart?
But that's so... normal.
i think you mean "she should be Mrs Stuart"
;)
you all think you're so smart, don't you?
Anyway, off to bed for me. Quali will lull me to bed. I hope there's some good news from FOTA in the morning.
Oops, yes. I meant it as in the name, rather than it the person. I'll keep quiet now!
Franck fastest. Is there any need for this session to go any longer
Yes, Christijan needs to come at least in the top 3
What car?
personally i'd call the weekend quits about now.
Radio Le Mans saying they really rate Franck. They must read sidepodcast
Mr Hind-hoff saying Franck needs to learn the difference between argression and patience, but says he's a very good driver none-the-less.
Kolles with Bakkerud driving right now
LMP1 Audi R10?
Davidson is in 9th
yeah thought so,
you'll be lucky if he's in the top 10
Anyone got live timing?
Mr Lamy to the naughty step please
http://www.lemans.org/24heuresdumans/pages/chronos_gb.html
La la la la la la la.
fanks
CHRISTINE.RADIO.LE.MANS.NOW!
They've having a Franck love in.
Audi are not going to go for pole. I wonder who is going to tell McNish that?
I can never get it to work.
Its gone crazy again... is everyone posting under their correct names at this point?
That be the macs fault.
Very likely.
Although they keep saying that some mac's do work. So maybe it's just yours ;)
Also very likely!
Franck did the fastest lap :)
mine doesn't either.
I would love to own a Mac but I haven't got the money
Stoopid Macs.
I'm going to print screen that :D
you'll only encourage her. rlm need us to sort their live streaming issues.
if we can run x-plaform, so should they.
some mac's work for them, but i think you have to install something
any idea what?
I'm not the fanboy round here.
not off the top of my head, but i'll look into it
Watching Le Mans without RLM must be awful. It is ridiculous that they can't supply a stream that Macs can use.
Perhaps Apple can use there massive excess of cash to pay for them to do so?
we're not watching at the moment.
for the race, we'll break out vista like before.
macs are cheaper in the long term. we've saved money by buying apple.
Faster pole time by Franck
Sadly, it is true.
Phew, its the other ex-F1 driver from 2005 season, that is off.
You mean during the race, Vista will break like before.
:)
That's OK then. I don't think I could follow the race without them and they set a great atmosphere
absolutely.
Doesn't mean the firm should stockpile their cash instead of funding research like ever other major computer company...
huh?
Franck on pole by 2.2 seconds
Mr C
Download "flip4 mac"
Then shout and i'll tell you what to do next (i haven't worked it out yet, but thats what RLM studio have told me to do)
have it. next?
ignore me;
"I use VLC on my Mac and just pop this URL;
http://tx.sharp-stream.com/tune.php?c=radioshowltd&.waxr
into the open network box under 'File'. make sure you click the HTTP dot and you'll be fine."
is it like...
"see, i have this friend, who has this problem... he umm, owns a mac..."
pretty much :D
Grr..They have a massive stockpile of cash, and there research grants aren't quite up there with other major tech companies Grrr
well. whaddayaknow... it works!
woooooooop
What channel is Le Mans on sky
AD is 7th
Eurosport
Try Eurosport 2 or Motors
What channel number
can't say that i'm bothered tbh. i'm assuming the iphone didn't r&d itself?
Franck out of the car and RLM are trying to interview him
No more Vista
cheers jon.
no worries, anything to help my mac friends ;)
Christine & Mr C are you going to create a different thread tomorrow for the entry list for 2010
w00t!!
I only have British Eurosoprt... have to wait until 8:45
http://www.atdhe.net/7219/watch-24-hours-of-le-mans
it's probably a waste of time. commenters are always way ahead of us and would likely be deep in discussion before anything gets published.
then you end up with conversations across two threads :(
Timely link ,evening all.
evening everyone. hows you're day been?
Simply smashing... Yours?
i meant 'your'. :(
it's be awful. i hate thursdays.
Lucky Mr Bassano isn't here
Hi Lou
evening lou :)
http://smarterthanyouraverage.com/2009/06/11/baby-panda-thursday-16/
not even baby panda thursday can make this day better... bring on friday!
Hi Lou
Surely they are better than Mondays?
it's been that bad? :(
not this one. in fact mondays are generally alright. it's just thursdays.
was it a
*wakes up*
"yeyyy it's friday"
"oh no wait it's thursday"
Those days are just baaaaad
If it helps... Ants racing (well qualifying)
You are so wrong.
The driver, not hte insect
Hehehe.
how is he doing? if he is doing badly now is not the time to tell me.
haha :)
Franck interview
Franck broke his leg ten days ago
When i was doing 9-5 Thursday was always drinking night :D
you cant do that on monday... people frown upon it apparently
did he say he broke his leg?
Says it is still broken
he's doing really well actually....for an aston
What?
was he joking?
Broke it at training camp and he is liming a bit
what about Wurz? (is there a live timing or anything?)
Didn't sound like it. I assume it is not a proper break. Probably just a chipped bone or something
Cheers, how does it work, average of all 3 drivers or just the fastest lap for each car?
http://www.lemans.org/24heuresdumans/pages/chronos_gb.html
Oh my god. It's true.
http://www.fmontagny.com/index.php?id=766
pictures too
http://www.atdhe.net/7219/watch-24-hours-of-le-mans
Today was the last day of college for me. Just the exams to go!
Interesting how I say hi, then you say hi, and people only say hi back to you.. at least twitter still loves me
I have been checking that site all freaking year, I can't believe I missed this.
Fastest lap by the car
I can't do Mondays.
I dont know... i come here for the most up to date frackanack news and discussion on the web and...
Hi Pat
You break a leg stepping on a football?
no-one in france appeared to know either.
the guy only has one major race a year and he stood on a ball? that's worse than sneezing in a lift!
He has a properly broke fibula
and can drive with that?
It's all Le Mans-crazy this week! I hope it's a good one.
Autosport says talks in London ended inconclusively. They're comparing the situation to the Vatican during the election process of a new Pope. Sounds promising.
Have fun.
I am in a really bad mood now.
Smoke signals?
see...thursdays are just rubbish.
He's still alive, and racing.
All is well
because you didn't know? or cause he broke his leg?
Radio Le Mans clearly didn't know
:P
I KNOW.
BOTH.
They are the best day of the week in some countries :)
Yes. THe tibia taks most of the load. I don't know if they left foot brake in these cars. I assume they do and long stints and stints late in the race could hurt a lot.
okay. look at the positives. if he wins, i'm guessing he'll be the first to do so with a broken leg.
He is still quick
And yet.. he still fast? That's amazing.
wheres frank and antony
they will probably inject it, longer term damage, but its the biggest race of the season
Clearly no-one told McNish that Audi were not going to go for pole
I would have thought the biggest problem would be it rattling around and banging aginst things
Stupid man only leaves the house once a year, and breaks his leg. If I knew him, I wouldn't let him outside. Outside bad.
Gavin better be careful of his leg when they kidnap him, then.
After 10 mins of watching this, i'm really not sure what Ferrari were thinking when they said this could take over from F1. The TV companies would be lucky if the casual viewer stayed on the channel for 30 seconds.
You ask Alex to nick a panda, Gavin to nick Montagny, what next?
Please, please, please show us on board of McNish if he is really going to go for it on new tyres.
If anyone sees a comment from Gavin send him a reply immediately telling him to be careful
he tweeted earlier i think.
Franck isn't just a pretty face now. If he makes it through the race, then that is one hell of a gutsy performance. If by luck the team wins, he is a legend.
If they don't win, he'll be out of a job....
Peugeuot won't be here next year if they don't win. I reckon
Is this supposed to be making me feel better?
didn't i read they're building a new car?
It means he can sign for Audi and win
It just makes him even more legendary if he does win!
dunno, havent heard anything about that, but it's their 3rd year now, so if they don't win then it'll be hard to convince hte board that they should keep spending the money. s'what i've heard
Wow, who knew that Christine was the prototype for Annie Wilkes' character in Misery.
You try liking a F1 driver, trust me, its much worse. Did you see Australia and Germany? God I was scared.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/74507
arse.
McNish takes pole
Sory Christine
i'll just shut up then :D
2 hours left isn't there?
he has a point
Geeeze McNish, squeezes pole with a flyer at the end.
Isnt there another session?
But maybe the dark makes them slower?
Yes but this should be the quicker session. THe second session will be cooler which makes the engines better and the aero but not the tyres
No need to be scared, just watch out for the Christijan with an J later.
but cooler air makes them faster
aha!
Im learning all the time :D
There is supposed to be an hour between the session but there may be less because they lost half an hour befor this session
That really was Audi organisation winning again. For all of that session Peugeot was faster but Audi set up their fastest driver to be on track on new tyres when there was the best chance of a clear lap. Had Peugeot done the same with Franck he would probably have been faster.
I was just on Eurosport while their feed was on, Martin said 25 minutes.
Thanks Pat
Now some Bond, James Bond
Marino Franchitti sounds exactly like his brother. He is Paul di Resta's other cousin
It's proberly about 12 hours to the release of the entry list and I can't wait
francknews!
http://iheartfranck.com/2009/06/11/breaking-news-literally/
you may have heard this one though.
Dounds like the drivers expect the second session to be faster
Hehe (at your pun not the tragedy) Hopefully he will be okay... maybe SC can give him a getwell message?
IS the best setup Eurosport pictures and radio le mans audio?
That's what I have, although in fairness to Eurosport they've got a pretty decent line-up this year by bringing in Jeremy Shaw.
I might try an hour of each. Do the Cars have built in jacks? it looked like the peugeot guy just pressed a button, it lowered and the guy drove off...
And we are off again. Cars on the track.
Green
Are we doing a parade lap for LeMans?
Bourdais is out.
What a great idea
Why do the teams strip the cars tomorrow and rebuild them!!!
nervious jitters.
:)
Christine in your guide for new people it may be worth making a comment that there will be a thread open for the live shows with lots of coversation happening. Reading it as it is written now it sounds like people could be hanging about waiting for a show to start while getting bored.
Ooh, okay, will do.
Read the rest of it and it looks good.
McNish is getting ready to go again. Light the blue touch paper
Can you send me a link
Light up numbers are uber-cool
http://www.sidepodcast.com/about/new-to-sidepodcast-quick-start-guide/
Just had a thought on this. Maybe put something up straight after tomorrow's Daily? Head them off at the pass..
Bigger forfeit cheque when it fails
good plan. christine?
Can do.
Is it wrong that I read the first part as wiki.sidepodcast?
Yes.
Aaaah, I'm spending too much time on there.
Such a concept never exists
Not a fan of the current RLM line-up..
turned off the second they started. any news?
They're alright, apart from Paul, but they're not a patch on Hindy
none whatsoever
Who are they?
Just too dry and monotonous. It's as if I were doing it! If there's anything happening I'm missing it through the drone. Times don't seem to be improving at the front at least.
Nothing much has happened in this session
I like Paul Trusswell, lots of good info. I don't like the American guy who leads commentary right now. Jim?
The other American they have, whose name I've forgotten and isn't with them now, is excellent.
Oh that might be him there actually.
I meant i lived paul hehe, the others arent anything special, but they were great with the historics earlier
Jim..something on lead commentary, Paul Trusswell on car positions/strategy, that other guy on pitching in with interesting stuff
*liked
whhops
Chuck Dressing
Vaninna Icxx (or however you spell it) IS TINY!!!
That has to be the most boring helmet design ever
It looks too big to be on her head hehehe
Got to say, if they did F1 in HD I hope it would look as good as Le Mans does.
It still blows my mind that F1 isn't in HD. I have never heard a concrete reason why it hasn't been done yet.
Bernie won't splash the cash.
Satellite bandwidth costs, camera costs, cabling costs, lens costs....
...Taking F1 into the future
Story of his life.
Bernie doesn't even have a good website for F1 yet.
Whoops.
he's fallen off the race track...
It isnt siesped enouh accross Europe yet and Bernie was burned by interactive coverage.
Japan is filmed in HD, or it has been for the last few years... But their are rumours F1 will be HD next year. They have been testing an on-board HD cameras this year, if you look closely its the slightly fatter T bar.
He needs to bring it into the present first
It isn't widespread enough...
stupid electronics
Evening all.
He's on lighter fuel??? Butane?
Hey Andy
I think the best discription of Bernie I can think of is that he a 19th century industrialist running a 20th sport with 21st century fans.
Hydrogen?
Can I just ask, as this is a daily post and not live commenting, if we can have a bit of context with the Le Mans stuff? Nothing major, just some names would help!
That's good
I've just read the 2010 Le Mans rules...
Oh dear...
LMP1 petrol cars engine size reduced to 3.4l from 6l
Diesel reduced to 3.4l from 5.5l
Turbocharged Petrol down to 2l from 4l
LMP2 will have to run using GT2 or production based engines.
Telemetry banned!
Will try
I would have given a name - but all I saw was the rear of a LMP2 car off the track..
That's a start.
That is the first I have heard of that. Audi have a new car this year and Peugeot are talking about a new car for 2011. Seems odd if there a new rules for 2010
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/76015
I don't think the regulations are not significant enough to cause concerns in the designs of the cars. The one thing I do like about sports cars is those chassis are really adaptable to different components and different needs as per the race or regulations.
My adopted team isn't doing that well at the moment. :(
Poor Creation. :( 21st overall or 19th out of 20 LMP1's
Dports cars are meant to have big engines. Stupid ACO
Schweeeeeet! :D
So small. :D
Mine are 13th, been there like all through practice as well.
Sarrazan *Peugoat* just 0.078 slower than Kristensen *Audi* now. :(
Got held up by another Audi
Evening. Forgive my ignorance but what are we watching?
Le Mans qualifying :)
Hello all
Is there a link to the feed by any chance?
24 Heures Du Mans. ;)
Looks like deliberate blocking from Audi now to keep pole.
Looks like he will get pole unless TK pits for fresh tyres in the last ten minutes. I assume the reason TK kept McNish's tyres was to get a few laps in to settle into the car and do a time that qualifies him for the race before he has a real crack at pole
http://www.atdhe.net/7219/watch-24-hours-of-le-mans
Kubica's there? ;)
Merci
Live timing
http://www.lemans.org/24heuresdumans/pages/chronos_gb.html
:D
Kristensen blocking Sarrizan - guess who currently has pole?
Thanks also, Sir
Oh the ****ers!
Peugoat on a stonking lap - time for adverts!
Mr K then
He can't have another fast lap in the tyres or fuel
Do they have stewards?
Yes. McNish took pole at the end of the first session despite Franck and his broken leg being fastest right through the session
They are useless at Le Mans. Can't even decide whats legal or not for a pitstop.
21 minutes remaining.
The ACO have stewards who have a long history of insane decisions
Just another thought here. One argument that the FOTA hasn't made is that Max and the FIA are somewhat to blame for higher costs in F1. Think of it this way, when was the last time we had a chassis in F1 that lasted for more than two years? More importantly, when was the last time we had the same regulations for the teams to work from for more than two years?
We now have a situation where teams develop a chassis for the next year's regulations AND develop the current cars. How is that cost effective. If the FIA wants the teams to spend less, stop changing the rubric.
Hehe, you make it sound like he's dragging it behind the car!
Do the FIA and ACO swap then?
Corvette facing the wrong way there. :D
lol, any highlights?
I assume that is one of the things that FOTA want sorted
Number 64 M. Fassler
No the ACO is its own little world
Only allowed 2 mechanics and 1 wheel gun in the pit box at a time.
Plus the Lotus times at Le Mans. Changing the rules at the race weekend to prevent Lotus taking from taking part.
Do they favour the pugs?
Maybe Max should get some cost cutting tips....
thus making pit stops somewhat less fast and less interesting
They don't seem to as they have thrown out their protests against Audi
If that is Sarrazin he just hit mega traffic
I really do suspect the Audi is not complying with the rules at they stand.
They forcced all the Ferrari's to get extra carbon bits over the wheels
If this commentator says Poo-show once more i may scream
Boo for a Mazda engine at Le Mans thats not a Wankel. :(
Peugoat?
Do they drive up behind each other with full beams on?
I wish they used the same timing colours as F1. This is plain confusing
ja
Yup. Most must drive BMW's day to day. ;)
Yes
:D
A bit late in I know...
Where's the video feed that you guys are all watching??
What do they dip them for?
I thought it was suspect at Sebring but they have taken a lot of aero bits off it since then
hehe
http://www.atdhe.net/7219/watch-24-hours-of-le-mans
13 minutes remaining
http://www.atdhe.net/7219/watch-24-hours-of-le-mans
Le Mans quali 12 minutes left
They would do - this is a low downforce track.
Lent?
Thanks Flibster and Steven Roy!!
Sarrazin took pole
lol
Come one Audi get TK in for tyres
What a dull engine note those Diseaseal's have. :(
:D
I wasn't a fan of diesels until I bought one. Admittedly the turbo may have something to do with it.
Buy a proper engine with a turbo on it instead.
Or a Wankel with a turbo. :D
Marco Werner to try for pole?
Performance with fuel economy. Works for me.
But it is the fuel of Satan
As petrol is being blamed for all the worlds problems, I'm trying to use it all up as quickly as possible.
I was going to phone in the other week and suggest that f1 move to wankels.
Piston engines have been refined so much that very little progress is being made now, if F1 went with rotary's at least it would be making more road useful tech.
Plus they are called Wankels...
Do it
Better than the Renesis engine I have...
No - It's a Wankel!
I don't have anything to add, I just wanted to say 'wankel'.
Children, please.
(Un?)Fortunatly i hate the sound of my own voice...
3 minutes!
It is unfortunately the name of the guy who invented rotary engines and is the recognised name for them
You could also integrate Kerrs directly into the engine
we know.
I have no problem with the name of the guy, but there's a time and a place.
Off topic slightly...
I just uploaded my 2008 Silverstone F1 pics to flickr if anyone wants to look at them.
Why is McNish puttin his helmet on?
green is not good?
Pitstop practice
and why has it a camera on top?
I really have no idea..
They use different colours. Red seems to be good
I think it is a radio plug
Why not?
Would be better with a DC style camera.
I think green is green and red is purple
wtf??
I agree
Comparing the Le Mans timing colours to F1 timing colours
Franck's car on pole
got ya.
Peugoat number 8 gets pole with Sarrazin with a time of 3:22.888
7.112 seconds faster than the times the ACO wanted. :D
we saw him!
Now that makes sense!
My live timing went kaput at the end. Wheres Albers?
Figured it out and now I have a whole year before it is any good to me again
Good! Pole should be in the 3m20s or less.
13th
FRANCK!!!
:D :P
Gah, he did beat the other Kolles didn't he?
so. will franck start the race?
Yes by one place
Audi didn't fight for the pole...
Yeah... Right... ;)
Ant's 9th... i guess 4.8 seconds off the pace inst as bad as it sounds...
On the entry list he is listed as the starting driver
Is the Aston Petrol of diesel? i forget
4.8sec is very good for a petrol car against the diesels, considering petrols were 16sec back last year
They should have put TK in the car ealy in the session so that McNish could go for it at the end.
He still beat him, thats good.
Right, see ya all tomorrow, on that upbeat mood, see ya'll tomorrow for some whining about the entry list. I can guarantee now there will be a surprise. Ciao
Petrol
Petrol
Petrol.
A diesel Aston? Whatever next!
Is it classed seperatly or is it all LMP 1?
The diesels have a big penalty this year though
Then they're really well placed
I'd say 5 seconds a lap is still pretty quick ;)
All LMP1
The petrols need to be more powerful than the diesels.
Diesel has a range 2-3 tiles that of the petrol so in order to be equal the petrols need to be faster.
We should have Franck against McNish at the start so that should be entertaining
but are known as LMP1bis, because they might as well be a different class
McNish P1 early on then.
brilliant.
Tomorrow is going to be so boring with no running. Any chance of an aside with Stuart for Le Mans? :)
hehehehe.
You can watch the parade through the town.. if you aren't at work..
not sure if anyone knows, but Red Bull have an itunes app... and it's free..
itunes link
What does it do?
It qualifies really well, but then goes off on the first lap.
:D
from what i can see (have only just discovered it, so haven't had a chance to have a proper look at it, but it looks like it's got some nice features and it will be interesting to see how their 'pitter' feature works over a race weekend. However even if it's rubbish, it's a big step forward for teams :)
Very good!
itunes tells me its not available in the UK store!
I just downloaded it in the UK
works alright for me?
try this: http://bit.ly/JeoXg
Seems I'm having network issues! Works now!
brabham to sue formtech over name.
"Triple Formula 1 world champion Sir Jack Brabham and his family have confirmed today they are taking legal action against Formtech for using the Brabham name in its entry for the 2010 F1 season."
Good thing too. I'll be honest, F1 history isn't my strong point, but entering a team that is named after a former GREAT team is just immorally wrong.
maybe we should all boycott it. go to the beach or something?
no podcast, no live commenting. pretend it’s not happening? {Comment #348}
Maybe we should spend the weekend organising karting competitions, as happened in Hungary last year. (I say plural because I'm considering doing a Donington Park Museum/karting combo in October/November as well as the Autosport/karting combo in mid-January).
hmm, it's got potential. but i can see why it's free at the moment.
The thing is that I know that in reality a lot of people will still watch it. And during a boring race the only things that keep us sane are the comments. {Comment #357}
I have the distinct problem that as the sole admin of one forum, co-admin of another and a third forum's sole source of practise information, a lot of people would be very unhappy if I actually boycotted the race. Which makes me a bit like Force India - sympathetic to the cause of the boycott but unable to participate personally :(
So is it going to rain at Le Mans again?
I'm not here...
#f1nostalgia
...see I was never here ;)
it may encourage more teams to enter into the app world though, which can only be good, right?
There is some rain predicted
Foggy Peugeots again then.
Will a Brawn app make it through scrutineering, maybe Red Bull will appeal?
I do not know of which building you speak. {Comment #365}
There was a lime-green building at Turn 22. It was the only corner in that sector (apart from the final turn) distinguishable from the others by its surroundings...
totally. i think the f1 app sorta raised the bar to unobtainable levels, but i'd love to see renaults live data on an app.
damnit, i do some before i sleep.
did you find out if it was £4.99 each race in the end (haven't really been keeping track of things atm). but yeah that app looks awesome :)
Honestly I think these iphone apps are a gimmick. Why not put this stuff on the web? That way at least you have the chance of watching more than one thing. Trying to jam all thins stuff on a tiny little screen is a bit silly if you ask me.
no more confirmed info as yet. and mine hasn't actually worked since the first day i bought it.
But they make plenty of cash!
oooh.... not good. hopefully it will burst into life for the grand prix :)
Are you sure of that? I think a small few do....
i think i said elsewhere. it's a business model that works.
there's real way to make a decent income via html, but the apple ecosystem gives you a return on investment that makes it worthwhile.
It would probably be cheaper, one of the reasons i expect it is so expensive is so people at the races don't ignore kangaroo tv.
oops...
there's NO real way...
that's exactly it. loads and loads of cash.
There is steam...
...punk?
I can’t even remember who won the race though so it’s no surprise I don’t recall the scenery. {Comment #374}
I remember it was Massa because I still haven't quite forgiven his team's pit lane release system for making him nearly clout Sutil on the way out of the pits...
..excuse me!
I really wonder whether they make much return on investment for the iphone stuff. Short of fan-boys (apple or F1 or whatever). How many iphone apps do you actually return to after the first week? I am VERY reluctant to pay for an app.
hehe. ignore me. you mean:
http://store.steampowered.com/
?
Who? A couple of guys who wrote games?
there were figures, i read recently. i'll dig em out. thousands upon thousands of pounds, is the short answer.
how much can you make selling html apps on the web?
you're miles off the mark.
But plenty of people do, worldwide
oh yes, sorry, I guess it inst as obvious for people who aren't forced to use it to play games!
It would probably be cheaper, one of the reasons i expect it is so expensive is so people at the races don’t ignore kangaroo tv. {Comment #1108}
Speaking of Kangaroo TV, one of my relatives has given me and Dad some money on the specific understanding that we spend it in Silverstone. Dad's therefore letting me have a Kangaroo TV so that I can access the same data as I can at home. There may be hope for keeping my blog somewhat up-to-date while I'm at Silverstone yet!
completely new to me. i've no idea if they make money, i do know they've not earned anything from me though.
Yeah true enough. Don't Autosport make money from their subscription side? Has anyone really offered something *worthwhile* on the web for a fee? Why on earth pay money for a limited app which is on a tiny screen, that may or may not work
You will get far more data!
*hugs steeeeeeeam*
Extreme portability, for one
It is basicly the main portal for selling games for digital download, and activating software on-line. It stops a lot, but far from all piracy for on-line games.
I think it would be the ideal platform to deliver an F1 app
#f1nostalgia (since Twitter's gone into a sulk for the sixth time today) I found a copy of the 2000-2001 Formula 1 Yearbook at a local charity shop. Even though I have the Autocourse for that year already, I had to have it. Still haven't figured out why that year is yellow when all the other Yearbooks are black...
but you need to be sat in front of a screen to watch f1, i suppose it is a good replacement if you can't see it, but then again its for hardcore fans who are unlikely to miss a race...
and again it might sere as a cheaper alternative to kangaroo at a race...
steam is HUGELY successful in a business thats notorious for torrenting and whatnot. it's surprising how well steam has done actually...
Because it does something you are willing to pay money for. Besides, the tiny screen isn't such a barrier if the application is designed right.
Pinch to zoom makes a big difference too.
ok. washington post article, some app store info for you:
- estimated 25 million to 60 million of the billion apps downloaded thus far were paid for.
- using an online survey the median price per app was $2.65. that equals revenue in the range of $70 to $160 million.
- $50 million to $115 million goes to the developers.
*keeps poking*
So, people won't pay for a richer experience from a web page, but are happy to pay for a less-useful, but portable iphone app?
Which, I should add, will get buried amongst the 10000s of other apps in a matter of days.
You will get far more data! {Comment #1125}
Will I? That will make me a very happy blogger :D
i don't make the rules. i'm just saying, if bernie could make money off of the web, he would've done so already.
Yep, and I wasn't saying people are not paying for apps. But, are they using them (returning to them), and how widely is this money being shared?
Oh, now don't get me started on THAT one! (Live TV anyone???!!)
I know, crazy isn't it?
who was it who commented earlier, that they watched qualifying using the iphone app, whilst shopping in the supermarket?
Really? How?
i return to my apps. i was playing sonic whilst sitting in a traffic jam this evening. the money i've paid for the apps i own has been more than worth it to me.
the f1 app shows the cars on track in realtime. hold on i'll dig out the comment.
lol whilst driving?
i was stopped. but i was in the driving seat, yeah.
Cool. ;-)
comment from jay:
"I watched the Qualifying while shopping, made it interesting"
Do you know the app name?
you haven't read our post on it?
http://www.sidepodcast.com/2009/06/09/theres-an-official-formula-1-iphone-app-and-it-rocks/
links are in there.
Sigh, ok I'll take my Steven Roy hat off, but I still don't get the effort put in to these little apps. It gives a lesser experience and costs me much more in data costs for one.
Oh, right yep.
Its one of the best posts ever... I feature in it :P
depends what you call experience i guess. i don't own a touch screen tablet pc, so the ipod touch offers a better experience in some ways.
:D
On a side note, James Allen sums up the FIA/FOTA thing well
"The plan would then entail FIA looking at FOTA’s proposals for next year. This looks to me like Mosley’s way of saying, “We can give you want, but I need a win from this.”"
Well, when I watch a race, I have the live stream, comments and live timing. It's hard enought to fit all that on my laptop screen. It's such a releif to watch a TV replay on the proper wide-screen TV
I don't understand that comment
Its good to know his mind is about 10 days behind mine...
yeah, we do have the same problem. and it's only getting more and more cluttered.
oops. Where did you come from?
He's probably too busy thinking of scripts for F1 photo narration
alledgedly this is piquet's car:
http://twitpic.com/75j20
but given the speed, i'm assuming he's alonso's passenger.
Sounds like Ollie's visit to Monaco is not all fun
...I slipped and fell on the rocks by the harbour. Monaco hospital is nice tho. Also have teeth trauma that needs attention.
Yeah I'm cool. Stitches are no problem. A back tooth isn't feeling too great right now. I think it's split. Not in pain tho.
I am always here
I was being sarcastic, but seriously, doesn't "max needs to look like he's won" go without saying?
wha??
oh damn.
That's only a wee bit over 110mph, he might be alright if he sticks to the straight bits
is he.... is he twittering whilst driving?
is that where he's been going wrong?
Notes to self:
Dont get in argument with Steven Roy
Dont make joke at Steven Roy's expense
.......
Yeah, poor Ollie
Check out his facial bandagery
ouch :( poor ollie
I just opened tweetdeck and he was talking to RG two hors ago
twitterwheel strikes again...
Dont people get arrested for doing that?
i can see flav chucking gold bricks at his tweetdeck... Still makes a change Lewham's "drive safe on the streets kids..."
it's official... outside = bad.
Don't forget JA was the king of stating the obvious
[The times for this session don't count for Qualy 3!]
Awfully quiet round here… {Comment #506}
At that point I was looking in second-hand bookshops for books, waiting for teatime and an exam. (Both went well, by the way).
:D
So is clambering over rocks after a night out on the town
Good for you Alia
did you lead... him... astray?
No, I save that for you ;)
hehe.
And he gets to write for the financial times...
Watching a Zandvoort track guide with Renger Van Der Zande
“Try to destroy your Formula 3 car here and you will be the quickest….” {Comment #523}
I'm glad I don't have Renger's repair bill!
Have you always been able to edit comments in ye olde commenting?
Think so, for a while at least
strangely that's the only time i have noticed the edit button come up, could be useful with this keyboard!
are there others? {Comment #590}
We're (the UK) excellent at sailing - Ben Ainslie and Paul Goodison regularly get gold medals at the Olympics in it. They're usually joined in the medal charts by several other good British sailors, according to which classes are in fashion with the IOC each decade.
Right behind the Aussis and NZers
*ducks*
Bwahahahaha...
If the UK sailors win Gold medals, then the only reason they'd be behind their antipodean competitors would be if they were racing a circuit and coming up to lap them.
oooooooo ;-)
I was going to make a comment about waving blue flags, and the irony that their flags were mostly blue, but it didnt quite come together...
Woah, surely the Brawnmower of the future
Who’s going to pay the €50 fine?
what fine? {Comment #633}
The €50m bond the remaining FOTA members have with each other to ensure they act in a united fashion.
I think max has 3 options if no agrement is made tonight. {Comment #650}
According to the regulations, Max can't pick 2) (pick 'n' mix FOTA teams) or 3) (do an admittance-for-compromise deal) because that would mean allowing conditional entries at the point of entering the list. He can only do 1) (bar all FOTA teams) or 4) (agreeing to change enough stuff to allow a FOTA unconditional). Even then, the valid unconditional entries get priority (including Williams but not Force India).
When was the last time they mattered ;)
2006?
The last time Max needed them to get his way.
Pretty much sums up how they have been used under his reign... So they haven't really mattered at any point, they aren't regulations, they are a tool.
I would also have accepted
Melboune 09, spa 08god, when was the last time they made sense?Probably when the concord was still in place
True
McNish takes pole {Comment #863}
Excellent! Allan McNish is really good at this sportscar stuff. Franck performed very well, too.
Didn't Sarrazin beat him?
When was the last time they mattered {Comment #1196}
They usually do. It's only when some power-drunk fool decides to ignore them that they don't... ...oh dear.
Old Frackanack had a broken leg though...
One of my followers on Twitter has been suspended (I think it may have been a spam entry but I'm not sure). I asked to look up possible reasons in the help section and Twitter reported that the possible reasons had been deleted! Very strange...
Didn’t Sarrazin beat him? {Comment #1206}
Considering Franck has a broken leg, anywhere in the top half of the field constitutes a good performance...
Alianora is reading through the comments so I guess she has reach the end of the first quali session
you really *are* always around aren't you?
Of course
Vaninna Icxx (or however you spell it) IS TINY!!! {Comment #922}
The spelling is Vanina, but that was a good attempt.
Alianora is reading through the comments so I guess she has reach the end of the first quali session {Comment #1209}
Correct. This post trawling is fun :)
JA's last tweet from yesterday:
So - will Max decide to keep FOTA off the list? Somehow... I actually don't see him having the gall to do it...
Peugoat number 8 gets pole with Sarrazin with a time of 3:22.888
7.112 seconds faster than the times the ACO wanted. {Comment #1042}
Ah. Now Comment #1204 makes sense...
Good for you Alia {Comment #1178}
Thank you Bassano! I'm hoping that this time I've nailed the distinction which eluded me in Easter.
So - will Max decide to keep FOTA off the list? Somehow… I actually don’t see him having the gall to do it… {Comment #1214}
Unfortunately I can very much see him doing that. Maybe if I go to bed I'll feel more positive by the time 10am rolls round...
I guess it's a question of how he thinks people will react. Assuming he cares at all, of course.
If the other teams aren't on the entry list, he's basically closed off any avenues for negotiation - which may not be ideal for him if the teams have a Plan B - which they should have.
Especially considering Le Mans has an open door for them... The manufacturers (esp. Ferrari) would be what they need to energize the Le Mans Series.
I watched Le Mans for the first time today, and as a refuge for an f1 breakaway i don't think it stands a chance. Maybe if it was just on class racing it would be incredible. but with so many cars doing so many different things all at different speeds, casual viewers simply wont watch it.
Why not? I actually like the different classes of racing - gives me a bit of variety. So even if LMP1 gets a bit boring, I can always switch to GT2.
Yeah I agree, although I am a fan. That's the thing i miss most from touring cars is the various classes.
You are a motoraporsts fan though, what f1 and nascar do that sets them apart from other series is to attract the casual viewer, which in turn attracts big sponsors and tv money, which in turn brings the best people to the sport, which eventually brings the prestige. Ferrari would probably only get marginally more brand prestige entering an unwatched LMS as they would in GP2
The winner of Le Mans is on every news program in the world and in every newspaper. On that day everyone knows who won it. No-one outside fans knows GP2 exists. You also have to bear in mind there was a time when Le Mans and sportscars was as big as F1. If the top F1 teams switched it would be again.
It could be, but only if one series was on the track at a time. Casual viewrs are confused by qualifying formats, needing to use 2 different types of tyre and by blue flags. having 2 races getting in the way of each other is no way to present something. Its far to disorganised to be a major series, The teams would be better off starting their own with similar rules and maybe entering Le Mans once a year if there was enough demand for it.
In the 60s and 70s sportscar racing was huge. At least as big as F1 and the class structure then was a lot more confusing.
That was before reality TV and Twitter. People's brains have turned to mush
That may be true, but people are far more casual in their viewing now, the majority of people will not have the patience to actualy have to think about what is going on. There is a reason hundreds of millions more people will have watched the Monaco grand Prix than will see even a glimpse of track action at Le Mans. Its presentation. I had a vague idea of what was going on, and i still found it confusing. Its a great sport for fans of it, but it wont go mass market unless it is presented in a more conventional manner with separate events.
It would all depend on the TV coverage. Personally i would prefer if they would write the rules in a way that allowed all the teams to run in one class but that is not going to happen. Good TV coverage could make it facinating. I know everyone on this site is a fan so it is different but until this time last yeat most of them had never watched sportscars or had the slightest interest in them. This year some of those same people are talking about sitting up for 24 hours straight to watch the whole race.
Steven makes a very good point there. And I think that's huge credit to people like Montagny (who isn't just Christine's crush - he's mighty at the wheel too) and McNish (in particular, I remember his epic comeback at last year's Petit Le Mans).
LMP1 cars look awesome, and racing on their own they would be able to compete with f1 if the big teams moved over. perhaps they could do the 24 hrs with the other classes, but for the series to be successful on the global stage it needs to be independent of the others.
I love it, but again, preaching to the converted.
I fear the general public is so used to pre-packaged bites these days, that it's too hard to watch something a little more complicated. Touring cars here is a classic example, which has been whittled away to a 2-car event with identical performance. Then all you have to watch is the different colours.
They would lose Le Mans if they did that. The ACO won't give away power and if you have a permanent field like F1 then the teams would want more control. So long as there are multiple classes and manufacturers arriving then leaving after a few years they maintain control
True, but if the teams leave f1 i suspect they will want to gain controll of wherever they move too, avoiding being uprooted by another power hungry max character will be a key goal.
Pretty much every successful sporting organisation in the world is partly owned by its competitors, from NFL to the premier league, the concept needs to come to motorsport.
Its been an interesting debate, but i must retire for the night. Cheers guys!
Night Nick
G'night, Nick. Cheers! :D
Williams mugging off FOTA http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/76049
not really, but you could read it that way.
