You know it is a slow news day when the daily post reverts to telling you what kind of public holidays are being celebrated on the date in question. Today, 10th June is Portugal Day in... well, Portugal, obviously. I don't know what kind of celebrations take place on a day such as this, but I like it. Anyway, here's some F1 stuff:

  • FOTA's response to Max's suggestion they fall under the budget scheme and work on the regulations like one big happy family was apparently "not entirely negative." Does that mean they said "no but nice idea"? Or perhaps the FIA are just playing it down for now. Roll on Friday is all I say.
  • Nick Heidfeld is doing a Jenson (and to a lesser extent a Franck) and offering up a helmet design competition. We had one very happy commenter last week, when Lou picked up third place and a signed Brawn cap, so who wants to win Nick's prize? Tickets to the Nurburgring and a paddock entry.
  • Mr C got quite excited about the mention of an F1 app in Will Buxton's blog, and wrote an entire post about it. Is it so, can it possibly be, that Bernie is starting to realise there is more to this internet thing than meets the eye?

That should do for now. I am going to quickly abuse my power here to wish my mother a happy birthday (and to provide a reminder to myself to do so in person later in the day), and as per usual, I'll see you in the comments.

    Hello Wednesday!

    Happy Birthday to Mr C's Mother-In-Law ;)

Great, now I need to convince my bosses to buy me an iPhone "for work purposes..."

Happy Wednesday everyone. Less than 84 hours till LeMans.

I don't know... maybe he should put a image of Chris Amon on his hat because he is the modern equivelent. I really want Nick and Mark Webber to win a race if not this year, sometime.

    Mark, quite likely

Nick, much less so [at least, this year anyway]

If there's a form of media I think I'm particularly strong at, it's video editing. Thankfully Forza 3 will help develop this as they're letting players save replays and such as .wmv files which makes it very easy to create and share videos within the FM community. I'm aiming for the video editors leaderboard ;)

just reading frank's words in tony's latest column:

"...manufacturer engines are just magic bits of kit. They go wrong very rarely and of course they bring great prestige."

doesn't sound like a man keen to run a cosworth in a hurry.

So long as he keeps Kaz, that Toyota deal will stay sweet.

  • me10/06/2009 at 00:28

So long as he keeps Kaz, that Toyota deal will stay sweet.

    not if toyota leave.

  • Bassano Clapper10/06/2009 at 00:28

So long as he keeps Kaz, that Toyota deal will stay sweet.

    Is there no alternative, really?

  • Nick10/06/2009 at 00:29

    not if toyota leave.

They have the engines, unless FOTA agree not to supply there is no reason not to.

  • Bassano Clapper10/06/2009 at 00:29

    not if toyota leave.

They might still produce engines if they can sell enough of them and keep some folk employed. Save a bit of face

  • me10/06/2009 at 00:31

They have the engines, unless FOTA agree not to supply there is no reason not to.

they're not going to put out a press release saying "we fundamentally disagree with max, so are leaving f1... except... ummm... actually, the engines are staying for a year."

    are they?

  • Nick10/06/2009 at 00:33

    are they?

They could just say the engines will represent us in a minor formula, also would be a handy argument in court cases...

It would be a big debate.. for sure

  • me10/06/2009 at 00:33

They could just say the engines will represent us in a minor formula, also would be a handy argument in court cases...

    but why would they bother?

  • Steven Roy10/06/2009 at 00:34

They might still produce engines if they can sell enough of them and keep some folk employed. Save a bit of face

No chance. No-one in history has done that

  • Nick10/06/2009 at 00:34

    but why would they bother?

They get paid for them, and free testing?

In my opinion its a 50/50 call

  • me10/06/2009 at 00:35

They get paid for them, and free testing?

they don't though, at least nothing major. that's why kaz is in the seat.

  • Bassano Clapper10/06/2009 at 00:35

No chance. No-one in history has done that

Just because it hasn't been done before doesn't mean it won't happen, if it makes a profit, why close an engine plant?

  • me10/06/2009 at 00:36

Just because it hasn't been done before doesn't mean it won't happen, if it makes a profit, why close an engine plant?

    where is this profit?

  • Bassano Clapper10/06/2009 at 00:36

    where is this profit?

The 'if' may not be a small one ;)

  • Nick10/06/2009 at 00:37

they don't though, at least nothing major. that's why kaz is in the seat.

True... And leaving F1 an 1 engined formula would hurt it vs GP1

  • Steven Roy10/06/2009 at 00:37

Just because it hasn't been done before doesn't mean it won't happen, if it makes a profit, why close an engine plant?

    They won't make a profit.

still reading the same article. i love this quote on the subject of FOTA wanting peace, but also planning to scrap KERS:

Theoretically, the investment might be justified to keep the Toyota name in the sport. Maybe not, but we don't know anything for sure

    [No F1 pun intended]

true. i am willy to stick my neck out though and say that if toyota leave f1, their engine's going with them. based on very little admittedly, i just don't see why they wouldn't up sticks and walk.

I cant see a breakaway next year, at the moment they are trying to damage max, if he doesn't go who knows whats up their sleeve, but i think if they have signed up for next year, then they will race and in the meantime campaign to either get a FOTA nominee elected to the FIA or to strip its power.

Honda left a team behind and took the engines with them. If Toyota left they would be far more worried about Cologne than a few people making engines

They were talking about last years car and how it was going in some sort of Mercedes "look it won" thing in Germany and they said "that was a nice car, I bet you wish you had it back" or something and he said "uh yeah" and then they started talking about how they know nothing about the technical side of F1 but they can tell the car is slow. So there was a lot of "um, er, yeah, its um, uh, yes" until he got back on the company PR-line :D

I know it's no excuse, but you can imagine how they'd get caught so easily. Going from 200mph f1 cars to a road car, it's easy to go over the speed limit without realising, everyone does it at some point.

I hate how slow it feels when you drive long distance and you have to slow down to go through towns after spending an hour on the open road. I imagine any trip in a road car must feel like that when you go super-fast for a living :D

Button on BBC News, Hamilton on BBC Radio 1 - this is nuts.

I was wondering how come I was hearing Jenson's dulcet tones on BBC Radio 4 at 8:55am - usually the F1 is at 7:25am between cricket and skittles.

By the way, <a href=http://news.bbc.co.uk/today/hi/today/newsid_8092000/8092649.stm>Jenson and a BBC reporter were in a Scalectrix race. Unfortunately the title gives the result away...

    Morning All!

Is there any live commentating tonight on Le Mans Qualifying? I believe it’s on Eurosport at 6pm. All 3 drivers per car have to set a time within the hour! That’s a challenge alright! I’m looking out for Ant Davidson in the Aston Lola and Karl Wendlinger in the Saleen, Can’t wait!

  • Alianora La Canta10/06/2009 at 08:55

    Is there no alternative, really? {Comment #12}

Yes. Kamui Kobayashi and Something-or-other Hirate are slower than Kazuki Nakajima though, so Kazuki really is Frank's best option.

    There is an election in October, i think that might decide a lot. {Comment #40}

I think that will be too late, at least for 2010. Budgets will be committed elsewhere by then. The manufacturers may then decide to come back after the recession if the delegates vote Max out, but F1 will be F2-and-a-lot-pricier until then.

I miss his intelligence and the fact he used to give out free T-shirts (probably self-designed or friend-designed, given that he had to withdraw two due to spelling mistakes) in the paddock (no, I never got one; it was the generosity principle that made me think highly of him).

The intelligence definitely showed in his driving. The generosity... ...is difficult to demonstrate on-track while still looking like a professional racing driver.

I quite often have them on when my parents have gone to bed and I don't want to wake them up. That works because there's time for the subtitles to be corrected properly and link up to the audio smoothly. Lewis Hamilton quotes from Radio 1 this morning

For those who thought Hamilton was a little too corporate this morning - there is no such thing as "off the record".

My colleague got into trouble because of that - he was asked for some info "off the record" and ended up hearing his own voice on the radio ... luckily he 'toed the party line' for once (something he wasn't especially known for) and he got away with it...

The speaker is like a teacher, and he does nothing, occationally stands up and makes everyone quiet, then they go back to how they were. It's exactly how it is in a classroom.

hehe, i don't mean all classrooms, some teachers are great, but the speaker is new and a bit like alot of supply teachers, our school never had any that could control classes, but thats what you get from Essex schools i guess

For those who thought Hamilton was a little too corporate this morning - there is no such thing as "off the record".

It's not about being on or off the record. It's more about the stuff he talks about, I guess. For much of the first half of the interview, he was just repeating stuff we already knew. He was better in the second half, though. Would've loved to see him choose a song to play, though. ;)

My grandma is perfectly content without a computer, which is just as well as I don't think she could use one if she did. It is somewhat ironic because her husband and her son were/are both heavily interested in computers as early as the 1980s (hence why I first used a computer at age 2).

That was predictable, Audi start building a new car and then the ACO change the rules, it's bound to bring up somebits, plus Audi are going to own Peugeot's unreliabilty this year, so i can understand them wanting to slow the Audi's down ;)

and so far as i can tell... they don't need to ask you if you have previously granted another company the rights to sell them your details in the past.

if you haven't, then there's no reason to opt out. and if you have, you can't really complain now, can you?

  • Mawech10/06/2009 at 12:25

they presumably only have your data if you've let another company sell it on to them. which begs an obvious question...

Assuming every one read the microscopic print hidden halfway down page 37 of some incomprehensible document and un/ticks the box

  • Steven Roy10/06/2009 at 12:25

Thats like the FIA turning down F1 appeals so they go and appeal to the FA instead. The ACO are a completely different governing body

    I am not here.

They already appealed and lost. They don't want to mess with the ACO. Those guys make the FIA look corporate. Peugeot may never get another entry.

  • me10/06/2009 at 12:26

Seriously though i value my phones privacy, i've had some bad experiences in the past with harrassing calls.

question... do they even have your phone number in their database?

  • Mawech10/06/2009 at 12:27

    Who knows?

    And they're not saying

  • Alianora La Canta10/06/2009 at 12:28

isn’t it worth waiting to see if anyone actually uses this? i could understand people’s annoyance if you were being called 15 times a day, but what’s the objection right now?

    they presumably only have your data if you’ve let another company sell it on to them. which begs an obvious question… {Comment #299}

Firstly, it can take them up to four weeks to remove you from their list, so it may be too late even now.

Secondly, some people cannot afford the risk of being rung at any random time. For example, my mum is frequently on a horse as part of her job. If the phone rings unexpectedly, it could startle the horse. She has to have one in case of an emergency, but a phone call as proposed by this directory company (as opposed to the texts people who know her send during the day) could be dangerous even if it only happens once.

Thirdly, not every company is scrupulous about following the regulations. It would be easy for a company to illegally sell/pass over details to the directory company and then all sorts of calls could happen that weren't expected from the contract signed. Let's face it, all EU marketing stuff to mobiles should legally be opt-in and not everyone is complying with it yet! (Reputable companies are, but not every company is reputable).

  • RCC (aka rockingcopsecorner)10/06/2009 at 12:28

and so far as i can tell… they don’t need to ask you if you have previously granted another company the rights to sell them your details in the past.

This is a classic case of what is wrong with modern society, anything for a percentage and to hell with anyone else.

Opt in should be voluntary not Opt out

I never tick the box asking for my number to be passed on but there's so many ways companies can get around it. The man in the street isn't important anymore.

  • me10/06/2009 at 12:28

    Who knows?

so what is there to be annoyed about?

    And they're not saying

that's a good thing isn't it? privacy wise.

  • me10/06/2009 at 12:29

For example, my mum is frequently on a horse as part of her job. If the phone rings unexpectedly, it could startle the horse.

umm. does the phone not have a vibrate function?

  • RCC (aka rockingcopsecorner)10/06/2009 at 12:29

question… do they even have your phone number in their database?

Yes i looked yesterday, have no idea how they got it, I opt out of everything!

  • Jon Waldock10/06/2009 at 12:30

The ACO organises Le Mans under FIA rules. So the FIA is the next level of jurisdiction after ACO in this case.

But Le Mans is run under ACO technological rules, because FIA bought out new ones that were completely different to ACO ones to do with GT2/3 and basically said "the aco can choose to run ours but we're not going run to theres" and so people choose ACO because LMS is better than FIA GT

  • me10/06/2009 at 12:30

This is a classic case of what is wrong with modern society, anything for a percentage and to hell with anyone else.

    okay, so, daily mail reader?

Opt in should be voluntary not Opt out

that would render a potentially useful service, useless.

  • RCC (aka rockingcopsecorner)10/06/2009 at 12:30

umm. does the phone not have a vibrate function?

But surely the point is you have the discretion of who has your phone number not someone else.

  • me10/06/2009 at 12:31

Yes i looked yesterday, have no idea how they got it, I opt out of everything!

    fair enough.

  • Alianora La Canta10/06/2009 at 12:31

    they don’t think that it is. they know that it is. {Comment #303}

I think what Maweech meant is that the company legally has to ask first before making money from it. This doesn't seem a direct enough method of asking and I can see massive loopholes enabling the number to be used without asking at all. You can't actively register someone else's phone unless you happen to be able to borrow their SIM card, but passive registration looks like it is happening wholesale.

  • RCC (aka rockingcopsecorner)10/06/2009 at 12:31

  • RCC (aka rockingcopsecorner)10/06/2009 at 12:35

As I said i have no problem with the company selling it's services at all, I just desire the number directory to be voluntary, you say when you buy your phone if you want in or not. That way everyone is happy, a good idea in principle (the directory) but open to inevitable abuse.

  • Alianora La Canta10/06/2009 at 12:36

    question… do they even have your phone number in their database? {Comment #306}

The first we can know is the first time we get called. In Mum's case that could very well be too late.

Her phone has a vibrator function, but some horses are sensitive to that too. Switching it off isn't an option because sometimes people from home need to text her (Mum has yet to encounter a horse that has a problem with the text vibration indicator).

  • me10/06/2009 at 12:36

The first we can know is the first time we get called. In Mum's case that could very well be too late.

alia. i'm missing a trick here. but what did you mum do before mobile phones were invented?

just turn the damn ringer off.

  • Mawech10/06/2009 at 12:38

    If you need an example.

I now get marketing calls from all sorts of companies, even though my number is ex-directory.

Why because "3" insist that you give them a landline, before they'll give you a mobile, then they flog it on to anyone who'll pay, even though I told them it's Ex-Dir.

  • me10/06/2009 at 12:39

Why because "3" insist that you give them a landline, before they'll give you a mobile, then they flog it on to anyone who'll pay, even though I told them it's Ex-Dir.

so if that bugs you... maybe a different mobile company?

  • Alianora La Canta10/06/2009 at 12:40

    But Le Mans is run under ACO technological rules, because FIA bought out new ones that were completely different to ACO ones to do with GT2/3 and basically said “the aco can choose to run ours but we’re not going run to theres” and so people choose ACO because LMS is better than FIA GT {Comment #313}

It's still under FIA regulations for things like the circuit and basic safety. It's just that the ACO ones are superimposed over the FIA ones where a conflict exists. If it didn't have FIA regulations at some level it wouldn't be licensed by the FIA and very few of the drivers on the entry list would be able to compete under the terms of their licenses.

  • Mawech10/06/2009 at 12:41

  • Alianora La Canta10/06/2009 at 12:42

    that would render a potentially useful service, useless. {Comment #314}

It would also render an illegal service under EU regulations legal. Besides, the company's claiming that they've had a few million voluntary opt-ins as well as all this data hoovering (they want to say that because, among other things, the voluntary ones earn them money directly).

Besides, people can opt out of paper directories (my family is among them). Why not online ones as well?

  • me10/06/2009 at 12:42

    But surely the point is you have the discretion of who has your phone number not someone else. {Comment #315}

By the look of the way this company operates, that's not strictly true any more. Mum's never given her number to any company voluntarily, yet the way the corporate world works, it's likely that it's out there and could fall into this company's hands anyway.

  • me10/06/2009 at 12:45

    NO

I'm not on Skype because it doesn't work on my computer, but I would insist on it showing less information than that if I ever joined. For that matter, I'm the sort of person who is bugged by the fact that Fantasy Racers wanted to show most of my real name when I first used it.

Before mobiles were invented, she had to have someone else on standby in case she or a horse got injured or something. That person would then need to go to the nearest house to summon help. That's health and safety for you.

Now she can work horses on the road by herself without needing to have someone else there on another horse.

Basically, a mobile phone means it costs half as much money for people to have their horses worked. I see no good reason why some phone directory company should be permitted to turn the clock back seven years!

Also, back then I didn't know Skype had a directory, let alone that it was impossible to opt out of it (note that this means Skype technically shouldn't be operating in the EU - while non-opt-out may be legal in the USA, it's not legal this side of the Atlantic).

Why did I not get my wife to do that with Lewis?

  • Journeyer10/06/2009 at 13:17

why the sudden interest in him?

not sure, to be honest. i guess it was because he got STR to win before RBR did. but i'm surprised that they didn't go after him as early as the end of last season.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)10/06/2009 at 13:18

well, now would be the best time to do it - there's lots of potential entrants who need a factory (and an entry if they're not chosen as one of the new entrants)

  • Alianora La Canta10/06/2009 at 13:59

    I don’t know what this new company is that is getting everyone so worked up, but if someone rings me to sell me something, if I don’t want it, I just say no. Works for me. {Comment #343}

You are lucky. For years our household had a lot of trouble with a variety of companies (usually double-glazing companies and taxi firms; the latter was odd because up to that point nobody in our house had ever used one). Repeated instructions not to phone us again didn't work and the only thing that did was going into the telephone opt-out service and reminding a few of the more persistent people that there is a £5000 maximum fine for phoning up someone on the opt-out service.

Mobile phones need a formal equivalent.

  • Alianora La Canta10/06/2009 at 14:01

    ummm. you don’t know kathi! {Comment #348}

Ah, but has anyone actually objected to Kathi's calls strongly enough to tell her not to do it again?

  • Alianora La Canta10/06/2009 at 14:03

    that seems a little extreme, 99% of the time when my phone rings I don’t know its going to {Comment #351}

Maybe, but you have a fairly good idea that it will be worth your time to take that call because only a limited number of people know your number. Spam calls from people you've not heard of rarely fall into that category.

  • Alianora La Canta10/06/2009 at 14:04

    has she considered a walkie-talkie? {Comment #354}

Not enough range (we investigated that option some years back), especially given that she often has to ride through woods. Besides, until this directory company came around, the mobile phone option was a perfectly workable solution.

Ecclescakes is now saying that he'll fight any kind of breakaway series and, in true F1 spirit, take them to court with legal action if necessary

Now this is interesting. He's really sided with Max on this one.

But I think Bernie's missing the point. It's not about the championship they're in - it's about the teams which are there contesting it - and the drivers know it.

  • Journeyer10/06/2009 at 14:49

Also, circuits wouldn't be a problem for FOTA if they teamed up with Dorma. Those + Montreal and Monaco would already make for a great calendar.

The only issue would be with the TV contracts...

Also, circuits wouldn't be a problem for FOTA if they teamed up with Dorma. Those + Montreal and Monaco would already make for a great calendar.

Those meaning the circuits Dorma already work with for MotoGP. Most of them (except Barcelona) are exclusive to MotoGP and don't host F1 races.

That last paragraph about the 1998 Concorde agreement is interesting...

The reason they said no was that they wanted more money that Bernie didn't want to provide. Now Max is punishing them for it by trying to squeeze them out.

in business, saying no is not necessarily thinking they disagree with something, but they could get an even better deal. the problem comes when they never get another chance to say yes.

  • Journeyer10/06/2009 at 14:54

    but they could, right?

Most could. Not sure about Laguna Seca (the corkscrew is too tricky for low-riding F1 cars) or Brno (not sure if they're certified for F1 races). Oh, they won't be able to race in Sepang either.

But instead they'll get Indy, Le Mans, Assen, Phillip Island, Mugello, and others. So it's still a pretty strong calendar by any standards. Add Monaco to that and it's as good as anything F1 can give.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)10/06/2009 at 14:55

Most could. Not sure about Laguna Seca (the corkscrew is too tricky for low-riding F1 cars) or Brno (not sure if they're certified for F1 races). Oh, they won't be able to race in Sepang either.

in business, saying no is not necessarily thinking they disagree with something, but they could get an even better deal. the problem comes when they never get another chance to say yes.

which makes us come to the conclusion that the two of them have way too much power - and the teams were blind to it. now that they've realized it, it's too late, and they now have to wait for mother nature to take its course...

  • Journeyer10/06/2009 at 14:56

but i don't think they ran at full-throttle due to that elevation change thingy.

  • Steven Roy10/06/2009 at 14:58

  • Journeyer10/06/2009 at 14:58

Laguna - sounds correct. Brno - but it wouldn't be "F1" though? maybe different regulations?

good point there. but those certifications are based on track safety, amongst other things, so i'm not sure they'd run there anyway.

  • Steven Roy10/06/2009 at 14:58

The rear wheels are partially exposed and have to be covered by the bodywork.

  • Scott in Italy10/06/2009 at 14:59

now have to wait for mother nature to take its course...

we've had a lot of those issues in F1. but that's real life - you make decisions you later regret. I remember hearing Billy Corgan from the smashing pumpkins tell a story how a guy came up to him in a music shop once, and introduced himself as being at a particular record company. he told BC that he knocked back signing that band - and every time he saw the pumpkins he had to remember that he thought they'd go nowhere. ouch....

  • Journeyer10/06/2009 at 15:00

we've had a lot of those issues in F1. but that's real life - you make decisions you later regret.

thing is, of course, they're not the only ones regretting it... so are we.

good point there. but those certifications are based on track safety, amongst other things, so i'm not sure they'd run there anyway.

They'd be nuts to go different to F1 on safety. the drivers would strike and then look what would happen ;(

He always wears white shirts. That is probably a photo issue rather than a pink shirt.

I think all he is doing is reacting to the Carmen Ezpeleta/Dorna stories. If there is a breakaway he wants to make sure it is with FOM.

  • Scott in Italy10/06/2009 at 15:01

thing is, of course, they're not the only ones regretting it... so are we.

Silverstone, Magny Cours, Imola, A1 Ring etc etc etc

A1 Ring doesn't exist anymore, right? Silverstone is on the MotoGP calendar from next year, so that's very possible. Magny and Imola are also hanging around...

  • Steven Roy10/06/2009 at 15:04

Laguna Seca could never be made safe for an F1 type series

  • Steven Roy10/06/2009 at 15:05

we've had a lot of those issues in F1. but that's real life - you make decisions you later regret. I remember hearing Billy Corgan from the smashing pumpkins tell a story how a guy came up to him in a music shop once, and introduced himself as being at a particular record company. he told BC that he knocked back signing that band - and every time he saw the pumpkins he had to remember that he thought they'd go nowhere. ouch....

There is the famous stor of a Decca exec who turned down the chance to sign the Beatles because he thought guitar bands were history.

  • Alianora La Canta10/06/2009 at 15:07

    That last paragraph about the 1998 Concorde agreement is interesting… {Comment #476}

When did the teams have the chance to sign the agreement? Was this before or after it became apparent that the FIA refused to be bound by it?

  • Steven Roy10/06/2009 at 15:07

but his hair is still white.

A1 Ring is still there. Mateschitz was looking at bringing it back to F1 last year.

i just think it's a pink shirt - it has a logo or something on it so I think it's not his normal clothes. maybe he slept in his car...

A1 Ring is still there. Mateschitz was looking at bringing it back to F1 last year.

But didn't they demolish parts of it already? If I remember correctly, he was looking at restoring it, but then it ran into some problems...

  • Steven Roy10/06/2009 at 15:08

Beatles? they're one of those bands on guitar hero?

One day they could make some record company some money

  • Alianora La Canta10/06/2009 at 15:10

    Yeah I’ve just noticed it now you mention it. Why would they say no? {Comment #479}

Because no sport other than F1 gives its commercial organisers 50% of the takings. Neither does any other sport have such high expenses for the competitors.

Besides, Bernie and Max were offered a counter-Concorde at least three times, the first in mid-2001. Why didn't they sign that?

  • Scott in Italy10/06/2009 at 15:10

Didn't they realise that by continually refusing to sign they were endangering their future with the F1 teams (maybe not the 2001 time because they hadn't done the 2005 agreements by then, but they were offered twice in 2007?)

As it stands, the teams could quite easily cite repudiation of contract by the FIA as their reason for not complying with it, leaving those two organisations with the bill for breaking F1. The FIA's counter-response still hasn't gone through the Formula 1 Commission or the SWG/TWG and therefore is against its own regulations.

It's not the time travel it is the grammar related to it. You should read the hitchhkier's guide to the galaxy on this subject. If you travel back in time and do something how do you phrase it before you go. You haven't done it yet so its not past tense but you are doing it in your future but its not really future tense etc

    Audi-Peugeuot update.

The FIA set rules for Safety, Track, Marshalls, Car Safety (crash structures and the like)

BUT they have no control of technical regs, so Audi comply with all the FIA regs (crash regs) so if ACO find them legal, theres nothing Pug can do!

good idea. The broadcast of the race itself has been changed, it is now on from 10.30pm-3am, then 3.30am-4.30am, then 6.30am-7.30am, then we have a 9 hour break until 7pm when it is on until 8.30pm, and then from 9pm until 11pm when it finishes.

Stupid little breaks in the coverage. It was meant to be non stop from 10.30pm-7.30am but instead they are showing NASCAR and the GT3 European Championship.

I shall try and sleep during these periods I think, I am not hardcore enough to do the full 24 hours, and I don't have enough bandwidth to stream that which is not on TV.

  • Steven Roy10/06/2009 at 17:15

He just made it out of the gravel. Had he not made it back the car was out of the race as the three drivers are rookies and they have to do 10 laps each in this session.

Good idea but I haven't seen most of my neighbours in the 12 months i have lived here so I doubt it would work. I have just done some investigation into the GT3 championship and I really really don't understand why out of allllll the categories of motorsport, that is the one they show on TV here. The rights must have been very, very cheap. Not worth interrupting Le Mans for.

I have just noticed they are showing DTM here now as well. They are obviously moving in the right direction with their motorsports coverage, I just wish they had GP2. I'll have to watch it and cheer on di Resta ;)

Klien is a lovely guy though!

    He's a great guy. I met him.

Well, I say "I met him", what I mean is I went to the test day at Silverstone in 2005 and bumped in to him, but I had food poisoning and felt horrendous so I just stood there looking gormless while the guy I went with talked to him..

  • Scott in Italy10/06/2009 at 18:17

    this pleases me.

why? because you don't like seeing a great company begin to look stupid?

  • Scott in Italy10/06/2009 at 18:19

for no reason whatsoever, Bert and Ernie on a boat, but contains language not suitable for the kiddies.

  • Amy10/06/2009 at 18:19

pretty much. Lotus's history in F1 is pretty important, to bring back the name to a team of what is likely to be a whole lot of fail is a bad idea. I am not down with these name-revivals.

To me if David Hunt had bought the team and kept it going like Ron Dennis did with McLaren then fine. But now the only people who should be entitled to bring back the Lotus name is Lotus themselves or Clive Chapman

a little nugget from joe's latest post:

"Friday will give us an indication of where things are going. In the interim Renault F1 is reported to have informed its partners that it may not be in F1 next year."

  • Scott in Italy10/06/2009 at 18:29

well that's hardly a surprise (but still not great to read) - i think i saw something about that in the news. when you're playing hardball you have to really play hardball.

Garcia is a character who supplies Clive with the occasional story but somehow never qute does anything the easy way. He reported on the Spanish GP then due to popular demand did Monaco and today Turkey. It is worth going back and reading the earlier post. You will either love it or hate it.

not to me. it's just talking the talk. by telling more people it sounds more serious that just a simple one off comment. making themselves look like they're seriously considering it. even if they're not. besides, we all knew this is a possibility and maybe it's even a legal thing by writing it down?

I agree with you, but some of these teams might go in 2 years anyway. if the sponsorship deal is tied to f1, then everyone might know the time in the sun is over. ??? both sides are posturing. the real truth is what is not written down. the truth is somewhere in between.

    Ha!

Whoops I meant a Molly Guard. Got the name wrong...

To prevent people from accidentally tripping the Big Red Button, a Molly-Guard is sometimes placed over the switch. A molly-guard is a cover that must be lifted to trip the switch. It is named after a programmer's daughter named Molly who hit the Big Red Button for a server twice in one day.

    Ooooh. Which one?

The Puma Motorsport fan report comp. Means I'll be at Silverstone next weekend as a guest of one of the Puma supplied teams. :D

  • Steven Roy10/06/2009 at 19:56

Iiiinteresting. Will have to have a word with some composite people then.

Could be that Team Lotus will be using Lotus Cars/Engineering as a supplier - doesn't tie up with what I've heard though.

If they were planning on supplying them they wouldn't be suing them

    Cool.

Red Bull, Toro Rosso or Ferrari off the top of my head.

Red Bull, Toro Rosso or Ferrari off the top of my head.

    BMW and Renault too.

  • Scott Woodwiss10/06/2009 at 19:57

    BMW and Renault too.

If they place me with Renault, that will be rather ironic. That's all I'll say on that one ;)

  • Scott Woodwiss10/06/2009 at 20:00

Plus this means I'll be at Silverstone twice in a space of a few weeks. Once for the GP and then again for the WSR. 2 free trips to Silverstone.

You probably all hate me now :D

  • Flibster10/06/2009 at 20:07

If they were planning on supplying them they wouldn't be suing them

I've read the full release - doesn't say anything directly about taking them to court, doesn't sound friendly though.

On the Group Lotus press site though, there is a Press Release Category for Lotus F1 :D

  • Flibster10/06/2009 at 20:08

Nope - you have your penalty.

You have to go to Silverstone. :P

  • Scott Woodwiss10/06/2009 at 20:08

    Worth it though :D

Who says I'm sleeping in a tent?

Who says I'm sleeping in a tent?

Well actually the campsites will be full, so good point.

  • Jay10/06/2009 at 20:12

ITV have an article up about the possible new entrants for next year ;)

  • Jon Waldock10/06/2009 at 20:15

"Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali insists the FIA cannot include his outfit on the entry list for 2010 when it is published on Friday, unless the governing body has agreed to demands laid down by the Formula One Teams' Association (FOTA)."

Maybe it's not quite as positive as we'd thought

  • Steven Roy10/06/2009 at 20:17

    He sounds exactly like Dario

  • Flibster10/06/2009 at 20:24

When you're sleeping in a tent and get woken up by the wind...you may disagree ;)

Solution to that is not to eat any of the nasty food from the fryup stalls. ;)

  • Alianora La Canta10/06/2009 at 20:26

    So why didn’t they do it last time in Paris? Could we be missing something here? {Comment #522}

That was because last time the case was centered around Ferrari's veto. Easy to prove (so easy that even a one-day injunction meeting could tell it was there; the rejection of the injunction was on one of three different things, depending on who you read) and relatively simple to get enforced.

Using the Concorde Agreement requires multiple documents of varying degrees of confidentiality and age read and understood, possibly dragging out the procedure far longer than the veto route.

  • Scott Woodwiss10/06/2009 at 20:27

  • Alianora La Canta10/06/2009 at 20:57

    It’s not the time travel it is the grammar related to it. You should read the hitchhkier’s guide to the galaxy on this subject. If you travel back in time and do something how do you phrase it before you go. You haven’t done it yet so its not past tense but you are doing it in your future but its not really future tense etc {Comment #594}

If you think relatively (and you'd need to in order to effect time travel), you'd use the future tense (assuming you had to use one of the current English tenses).

If you think objectively (and are in denial about the whole time travel thing), you'd use the past tense, nelogistic tenses or not.

    With Christian Bakkerud and someone called Mondini {Comment #666}

Giorgio Mondini is a Swiss driver who did one Friday morning practise for Midland in Malaysia 2006 (sporting a white helmet because the helmet he expected to use caught fire in its bag before leaving the paint factory). Not heard of him since.

Back to bed. Good night. :)

yup - missed that one too.

I spent ages look at that part, totally missed it

If Jenson gets pole and I cheer, I'm gonna get some funny looks from everyone in the team I'm with.

They do them, just not for that model, you'll probably find those ones aren't F1 compliant anyway, i didn't look. They do white ones for other models though...

  • Andy Taylor10/06/2009 at 22:10

I just saw co-driver boots. Whatever next?

    Thicker soles apparently.

  • Steven Roy10/06/2009 at 22:12

    Thicker soles apparently.

Makes sense. If you are ballast in a rally car there is no need to have soles that wear out so quickly

  • Jon Waldock10/06/2009 at 22:13

    Thicker soles apparently.

Ah yes, of course. My boots have thin soles, really not for walking around lots in...

  • Steven Roy10/06/2009 at 22:14

Racing boots have really thin soles. Walk over a small sharp stone and it is agony

  • Jon Waldock10/06/2009 at 22:15

Racing boots have really thin soles. Walk over a small sharp stone and it is agony

They're not that thin, (although depends on the stone) but thin enough to be bendable

  • Andy Taylor10/06/2009 at 22:17

Makes sense. If you are ballast in a rally car there is no need to have soles that wear out so quickly

So why not just some normal boots that would be worn by other crew members? I'm just amazed by the specific product.

They're fireproof. They're called co-driver boots, but could just as well be "refueller boots" or some such like

  • Steven Roy10/06/2009 at 22:20

They're not that thin, (although depends on the stone) but thin enough to be bendable

The ones I had were unbelievably thin

They're fireproof. They're called co-driver boots, but could just as well be "refueller boots" or some such like

I guessed that they'd be fireproof. The blurb does mention refuellers, but I would have expected everyone to wear similar safety gear.

Generally unless it's a big series, only fireproof overalls are needed for refuelling and then you only need proban ones...

Scientists believe the Earth could one day collide with Mars or Venus, because of the unpredictable orbits of planets.

Experts say there is only a tiny chance of it happening and it would be unlikely to happen for billions of years.

  • Flibster10/06/2009 at 23:07

Hehe. Wonder what it's like in the packing section of the factory they make them in?

I expect they handle them every day so have it down to a fine art - mine is used once a year - if that.

So no large groups of people watching them try to flatten bits of it with various handy rocks, buckets arms, legs and a lot of swearing.

    i'd book a hotel.

  • Flibster10/06/2009 at 23:17

    Won't work.

How about using the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis?

  • Jon Waldock10/06/2009 at 23:17

That's OK. Dad's prediction is 40 minutes to put up (increasing to 1 hour if there is more than 2mph of wind and "forget it" at about 10mph) and 25 minutes to take down. In both directions, 2 people are needed.

mines got poles and everything, i can put it up in just over 5 minutes :D

    Isn't he in a band?

  • Andy Taylor10/06/2009 at 23:18

Unfortunately his plan or nuking it doesn't work

How do we know that for sure?

  • Alianora La Canta10/06/2009 at 23:19

    OK, so now I’m going :D , who else might I see there next weekend? {Comment #1064}

You might see a lot of famous people who think they can sing at the post-race Grand Prix party (free to ticket-holders).

Best bet is to heat up one side of whatever it is that is coming at us and divert its orbit. Trouble is you need to know a long way ahead

    Unfortunately his plan or nuking it doesn’t work {Comment #1082}

Not even if you nuked it before it entered the Solar System? OK, that won't work for Kuiper Belt Objects or anything closer, but it's a possibility...

That could be interesting if the thing heading towards us is Venus. ;)

It's a book. You have to say "Klaatu. Varada. Nikto" before picking the book up otherwise the Deadites will rise and attack.

    i'd book a hotel.

    As would I.

Travelodge would do. All I require is a roof and a reasonable bed.

  • Pat W10/06/2009 at 23:23

Got bored of homework and now looking for Isle of Man vids for a blog post.

That works for sleeping, but would probably lead to us wearing the same clothes for three days - not the nicest option...

Last time I stayed in a Travelodge, it had one of those blue lights they put in public toilets to prevent people injecting themselves with drugs in the bathroom. The management were unable to understand my annoyance (the blue light gives me an immediate headache) and the sheer futility of putting such a lamp into the bathroom when there were normal lights in the bedroom.

So does mine - but there's no instruction manual and they came in a bad labelled "Sun Porch"! No, we're not taking the poles...

They make it impossible to see your veins properly. They also make me feel ill very quickly.

They make me bump into stuff (e.g. sinks) because I can't see properly in the low light levels they emit.

None at all, although I do wear blueish contact lenses and they don't.

  • Aitch11/06/2009 at 03:21

A couple of hours ago I tweeted MWM to ask when they were talking to Franck. They have not replied. Do you think they are scared to tell me they're not?

Maybe they don't want to wind up on the naughty step, so they might be scrambling to line him up.
