Hello everyone, and a happy Bastille Day if you happen to be French (or particularly revolutionary). A very good excuse for wine, cheese, croissants, or pain au chocolat as Amy had.
I trust you are well. Sorry I missed my last Daily but I was on holiday and forgot what day it was - thanks to Supersub Steven for covering me. So.. where are we?
- A new F1 Debrief was released yesterday, do give it a listen.
- If you were waiting for the iPad edition of the F1 Minute app, wait no more! If you go there now you can hear what Karun Chandhok thinks about Vijay Mallya. Sometimes I think Karun should just take control of all of racing.
- Christine's booky wook is now available on iBooks. This stuff is alien to me so I've gotta admit I have no idea why that's different to what I bought before, it adds a menu and presumably opens it up to more people and more formats, and choice is a good thing!
Speaking of booky wooks, Stuart has written a fantastic post about Scuderia Ferrari's first win in the World Championship, which was at Silverstone in 1951, and it features excellent photographs from his current book. It comes as a nice change because the Silverstone race most focussed-on in this era is the Championship-beginning Grand Prix of a year earlier.
I'm not sure I like the term booky wook any more.
If you aren't familiar with Marshall Pruett of SpeedTV.com not only is he one of best motorsport journalists around, he is also a comedic genius. Take a read of his Rewind post for the Toronto IndyCar race, if nothing else read the part after the poll, and the award for Golden Bowling Ball over on page 2. Page 2 also features the Benny Hill highlights video which is hilarious, watch it if you haven't already (note there is one brief (funny) swear in it). I sometimes think the 'Benny Hill music on a racing video' gag is overused but this race is just perfect for it, especially the editing here.
Leigh has been mega-busy with his definitive Silverstone race report, as well as a little bit of news about the future of GP2 and the GP2 Asia Series.
I'll have race start times up on my blog tomorrow night, and don't forget to enter my little game (hopefully writing this here means I won't need to send reminders..?).
Elsewhere..
Did you see these gloves? Imogen Heap is trying to make music without using any instruments other than a pair of gloves with an accelerometer, gyroscope and more bits of tech all built into them, linked to a computer. Sounds and volume are controlled by hand gestures. Sadly this article doesn't have any video (or audio) of it actually working and I can't find any elsewhere either, I can't wait to see them in action.
Speaking of music, the Manics have released some live tracks from the iTunes Festival, but as you can imagine from the festival name, they are only available through iTunes. Hopefully they won't be edited for swearing as the live show apparently was.
I like to talk about the racing happening each weekend but as there isn't a lot among the 'top' series I'll just quickly mention them here:
MotoGP at Sachsenring; WTCC/AutoGP at Donington Park; GT1 at Paul Ricard; NASCAR at New Hampshire;
I think I'll be picking MotoGP. I nearly bought tickets for Donington but it is quite a long way to go for a depleted touring car field dominated by one team. In any case, instead of racing I may well be watching The Open Championships, for which you'll want to check RG's blog to hear about a new young talent in golf.
Enjoy your day, and have a great weekend.
Welcome home Thursday
his dad gave it a shot, didn't he? could happen.
that's exactly it. two different standards, two different approaches, but the same content.
vhs vs. betamax in book form. don't know who will win.
i personally prefer kindle because it works on more devices, but ibooks is considerably more technologically advanced. place your bets...
jean michel jarre did that in the 80's, using lasers. i guess gloves are a bit cheaper :)
He was one of the top guys in one of the bids I think... can't remember if it was Max's
Aye - it's hardly a new idea to be honest. A quick nod to John Cage would suffice if you can take it.
Notionally I'd say the one with more reach.. but I don't trust Apple not to throw them out.
there is a third - barnes and noble have the 'nook'. looks ace, but not available in the uk.
anyhoo, it's past 1am and i need sleep
night all
G'night

Im 90% sure this argument between Malaya and Karun has been put together by Bernie. its too convenient, its the sort of story the Indian papers love.
Lots of Free PR for the F1 race!
Bambers week is especially awesome this week too http://plus.autosport.com/premium/feature/3669/bamber-week/
Off for my birthday celebrations tonight.
Only one place to go really :)
Morning all,
Happy birthday Nick

There is a rumour doing the winds of the wild web that Lotus may be doing a deal with red bull for KERS
I guess its better than no Kers?
I though Red Bull got their KERS from Renault
hm ... if it is only for the rest of the season it may make some sense as they already have some stuff like gearbox from RB. but their KERS partner for future is GE, isn't it ?
I think they have their own not-so-Mark-friendly KERS :-)
Its from the same developer, but i think red bulls is a lot smaller and only has about 70% of the permitted power output
Thats what i thought. If its true its a short term fix.
They supposedly have an upgrade package for hungary, maybe this is part of it?
Lots of big power tracks after then
Spa, Monza, Korea, Japan, AbuDhabi, Brazil
well, given that they are often (not always) just that KERS away from the mix ahead of them it would make sense. and even if it would not result in points they could still gain some knowledge for their 2012 car development
AbuDhabi and Hungary are surprisingly comparable actually
yes, dull races both :-)
that bit would be not-so-surprisingly comparable
Under the new rules tilke tracks are where its at!
Hungrary needs a reworking though, maybe cut out 3-4 corners and make the whole track wider.
Yas will have 2-3 corners changed if this year isnt great
More Valencia, less Silverstone? ;-)
Thats a street circuit :)
If we divide the season into "Historical" Street & "Tilke" tracks we can see the new rules have worked at the historical tracks, made a big impact at the tilke ones but not been so good at street tracks
I don't know. Silverstone also managed to provide some not so exciting races in the recent past.
then look at Brazil or Montreal , not matter what rules, cars, weather, the races are almost always exciting ...
they should change 2-3
... and 5-8, 11-14, 17-19 and 21
The sweep over the hill?
looks like serious army bulldozers will be needed :-)
so is the rubbish half of yas
it's trulli train-tastic
That bit was supposed to be a street circuit, but they changed their minds...
The bigest problem for me is the angle of the chicane at the end of the long straight, and the existance of the chicane at the end of the one whoch follows it.
Fix those too and it would flow a lot better
but the street circuit part is all a bit mickey mouse - the worse part about alonso's race last year is that he could go so wide of the track, repeatedly, and not get punished for it. it's a street circuit without any of the features that make street circuits compelling.
the sunset is rather nice though.
Tell that to webber!
I dont think that part of the track is so bad, its a multi apex right turn then a tight hairpin under the hotel. the bit before it is what strings them out.
Going offline will be much worse this year with lots of marbles down. the GP is the first event of the season on the track so it will need to rubber in
might be less marbles on the runoff than the track :-D
All this talk of yas is making me impatient to get down there...
trying to headping my ride!
No Tonka trip?
Oh it worked!
Fiona Jade is having her rear bumpers worked on and wheels re-aligned, so i am hitching a lift :)
Oh yeah. Enjoy :)
I am genuinly contemplating doing this http://www.chiliahedron.com/ballroom/
Waaaaah!!! Do ittttt!!
On route to Yas! :D

Yes, and all cars will run under 'Valencia' conditions for the remainder of the season.
we knew it already, that's the official confirmation.
what? not overtaking each other? :-)
:)
cars 2 tomorrow! mmmm movie popcorn
Hooray Williams
Could they not find someone that sounded even a little like Alonso?

Not sure how often it will be updated, but it's a start.
ooh, cool map.
PING!
I was in an off-the-wall mood, so wondered if I could come up with a more interesting F1 championship than the current one... http://www.vivaf1.com/blog/?p=7520
Vettel isn't even leading one of them!
"one point for first, two for second and three for third"
wut? is that for real?
yes indeedy
From 1932-1938 (34 and 35), yep.
Word up strangers......a blast from the past here :-)
How are you all?
From 1932-1938 (bar 34 and 35), yep.
who dreamt that up?
Hi RCC,
I'm fine, how are you?
probably bernie, he'd be the right age anyway
Can't remember, but it was the first drive for a championship. Up until then, all GP were essentially one-off events
ah... there was a constructors world championship before that
{Gah !!}
...that lack fluid manufacturer or private entrants. I think the Championship was to formulate a stronger presence, etc...
Yep - also for a short while
*nods*
Rocking of course :-)
Nah it's all good hither thank you....listened to the podcast last night.. good effort guys. I defo confirm though that Silverstone was packed on Friday practice. I've never seen it that busy on a friday before. I have noticed the new camera angles (excluding swing cool cam) hardly show the crowd at all. Due to the weather people were staying more in the stands but they were packed. I've never been turned away from a grandstand on a Friday before...this time easily 4 or 5 were too full when we approached them.
I did get frustrated in FP2 though with the lack of running...not fair really. I took some newbies and although they loved it, I did feel slightly responsible for us standing looking at tarmac for 45 mins in FP2
I do believe there is still a lot of contention over the 1939 European Championship to this day
i counted six fans during fp1. odd that the camera highlights wide open spaces and not packed stands.
Lol.....it certainly looked that way on the red button coverage. We stood the whole of Fp2 at Luffield and there must of been 300-400 along that standing but and the old Luffield 2 terrace...everyone else was sensible and hid in the stands.
it was finished in 1945. End of. :-P
Technically...
Defo quieter in FP1....that was noticeable...most people seem to conregate round the new grandstand.
The new pits i mean....in FP1
did you take any piccies?
No not really...I took some token shots around Luffield in FP2 (we walked the track in an anti clockwise manner) ...they're not that exciting but can mail if anyone one would like a butchers. I've spent the last 3 years with a DSLR stuck to my face at the GP and ended up viewing the whole weekend through a viewfinder. Kinda promised my gf i wouldn't spend this year doing the same.....killed me though as I was itching to shoot the new bits. Back up there in a few weeks for the Renault World Series and the Le Mans Series in September
Could have been worse. Could've been like NASCAR at Kentucky last week
heeh
I think I'll be there for both those as well
The lawn looks awesome btw ....when you're there the cars look fantastic travelling along the pitlane...it makes a real difference seeing the pit lane raised like that...albeit dipping out of sight at the better teams...silly fail Sivlerstone but surely that'll be better next year.
How many Renault tickets you go for? I haven't got my Le Mans tickets yet....suppose I should get my ass in gear.
Oo speaking of Le Mansy style things....did you watch ALMS from Lime Rock the other night?
Afternoooooon :)
I hate my area manager with the passion of a thousand suns.
Just the one WSbR ticket for me and I think I'm working at teh Le Mans event, but I'll need to check to be sure
I saw the first 20 mins - won't be able to catch the rest until tomorrow night
Oh nice...what sorta work?
F1Minute ping: http://www.f1minute.com/news/robert-kubica-confirms-rehabilitation-on-schedule
Jackie has got 4 WSbR tickets so no idea who else is coming
I write for the British F3 series for my site and I've a few other bits and bobs lined up too. It's a great little series.
Marshalled at Silverstone once too (not my thing at all)
;)
Hello! Yas is awesome :)
Wicked....I catch that occasionally when I get chance on olde Motors Tv
No wait - just checked. Le Mans series at Silverstone is a couple of weeks before British F3
Right folks,
I must disappear for a time
:)
Hello
I plan to be at Silverstone for the LM race, I ought to order my ticket too I suppose..
I saw the Lime Rock race and enjoyed it
Enjoy a little something from the sidepodcast.com back catalogue.

I know he's good friends with him, good thing for him to do. Was a really good speedway rider too, shame he lost form and then had the massive crash.
Love it here!

Hi everyone!
hopefully I'm gonna get back into the habit of commenting on the daily now!
Is Mr c or Christine around?
This FIA video is pretty cool with the impact testing on a fighter jet canopy. Maybe F1 cars really will look like Adrian Newey's Gran Turismo design..

Back now.
can I email you my daily to publish? Have written it on my phone but my HTC isn't playing ball and refuseg to log in so I need it to be published on my behalf
Abso-doodle-lutely.
woohoo! Interesting experience doing it on a phone :)
was it a challenge, or did you break your laptop?
haven't had any internet access for a few days now, only net access has been on phone. That or the BBC website only on IE6 in work.
...ill take the phone.
All received. Twice actually. I admire your dedication Mr Lukeh.
woohoo! Double daily :)
wow.
flipping unnamed media company related to a lower formula 1 team and their lack of help with this. Finally fixing it tomorrow even tho on the phone they weren't quite sure what I meant.
I should add I don't think I could have spelt out 'your modem, it is borked' more clearly to them :)
:) :)
Their customer service has always been terrible, going well before they were bought/rebranded...
Thought Branson's lot would sort 'em out though
definitely. had the exact same problems when they were ntl so it wasn't a shock I guess.its always been the biggest problem of being with virgin
Anyways sleep is needed, thanks again Christine for helping :) night guys!
I liked the cable service when I had it thought, both internet and telly :)
Yeah I never had any problems with their magic cabley internet of joy.
