A certain Brazilian driver
Welcome to another day! Its Wednesday the 13th of July and day minus 326.
You'll notice that I am not your usual Wednesday person :-) And that this is therefore not the usual Wednesday post.
For example, today could be about the 26th Anniversary of Live Aid.
It could be about how our favourite train driver turns 37.
We could be readying ourselves for the upcoming race in Germany. Hmmm, too soon? Maybe next week eh?
How about wondering what has happened to the M&S/Mclaren 'partnership'? Seems to be dead and buried, sigh, so no more giant Jenson' in store :-( Although that means no more giant Lewis' in store either…
Or it could be a quick look back to last year, when we were reading all about Alex and his season long trip in F1 land.
Instead, I've been standing in my kitchen, cooking curry, in purple Rabbit Ears (as you do) and thinking on how to begin. I realised I didn't know if I could tell you all about why, but thankfully Christine's response was 'absolutely'!
This is number 14 on a forty item list, that I aim to have completed in 327 days time. Because by then I will be Forty Years Old. And so will a Brazilian F1 driver - I wonder if he has a little list?
(You can find out more about my challenges, and see some evidence ( 0-0 ) at http://doingfortythingsbyforty.tumblr.com/. )
For example, today could be about the 26th Anniversary of Live Aid.
omg, i'd forgotten.
Nice to see LPG doing a daily and I assume the first written by someone wearing purple rabbit ears
Love this daily :) had forgotten about the m and s mclaren thing.. you mean to tell me it disappeared an no one got the cut out jenson? :(
love your challenges too lpg, can't wait to see how you do :)
Hi LPG. I like the list challenge. I was sure you've done a post before but maybe not. Sharing a birthday with Rubinho is pretty awesome, I'd say. :)
And a happy birthday to the train driver..
Yay LPG. :) Well done.
I'm watching the Toronto Indy replay on Versus. The Benny Hill video did cover it, Pat. hehe
Greetings everyone....
I am very impressed with #38 on your hit list, there, LPG, but it beggs with question "Which sword are you going to use?" for as Steven Roy would say.....
"Ack, lass, ye canna foil a claymore*..."
The real anicent (Braveheart) ones....
Ohhh and yay for using a glenn dunbar pic, his shots are awesome.
I say that all the time :)
Surprisingly well. :)
Shame about the crashes really because I actually enjoyed the race.
hehe
I miss hearing Scottish accents all around me. I love Edinburgh.
The scary part is that you are saying that as the chief engineer of some construction site...
Will Power just had his venting session during the interview. He's so angry.
You need to find a Scottish radio station on the net
Ah no... Rubes birthday us about a fortnight before mine... It's just nice to know I'm younger than someone (just)... I don't think there is anyone in f1 with my birthday...,
*makes a note*
I like doing stuff like that.
I have a long list of things to do now that I'm back.
There are a lot of Americans in Edinburgh. They won't miss me. :(
Tune in app....

and have you considered the possibility that they are really looking for the biggest Aryton Senna fan ? :-)

Still thinking about doing a rankings F1 blog...
Couple of questions:
Should i base it only on the current F1 points ( so only driver who finish in the top 10 for at least one race make it into the rankings, or should i adopt a different system?
Christine is it hard to do those tables you do for the rankings with the up and down green arrows in wordpress?
wanted to ask earlier - is it on purpose that the pictures in realtime in Chrome are kind of falling out of the think black line frame ?
Mr C set that up, I'll ask him.
Nope. Realtime is a suboptimal experience.
Thank you :)
morning all
Morning Leigh
how are you today nick?
Mick Doohan is doing a test for HRT tomorrow.
The real one!
:D
What?!?

Of course... V8's

this may not come as a surprise but lpg's daily gets my seal of approval :)

A good start to a Wednesday.
It may just be me but this tweet from Nick Heidfeld sounds like the start of a poem:
Helmets, helmets, helmets - really hard to pick my favourite one...
http://twitter.com/NickHeidfeld/status/91072888244932608
Interesting collection of people: Happy Birthday to Jarno Trulli, who is 37 today! Incidentally, he shares with Julius Caesar, Thierry Boutsen and Harrison Ford among others
http://twitter.com/MyTeamLotus/status/91051518865838080
Julius Ceaser must be a hard one to work out, he completly changed the calender, then his successor augustus changed all the months around!
Ooh, but I guess you can't prove it wasn't either? :)
Making up your own calendar sounds good.
surprise Rubens is always awesome :)
Having a super quiet day today in work though. I think all the prison people are sleeping. Or their computers are sleeping.
I would love to have December 2 but sequels are always disappointing
Not always! But often.
Someone clearly isn't an F1 fan though - @antdavidson: Unbelievable, bloke sitting opposite me on the tube asks if my name's Anthony. Turns out we knew each other at junior school! #smallworld
Could you imagine the conversation?
Ant: So, what are you doing now?
Chap: Librarian. And you?
Ant: Sportscar racer, former F1 driver and BBC commentator...
Chap: Fair enough
Back to the Future 2 disproves my sequels always being rrrrubbish theory :)
Since its July, and the month was named after him it would be rude to not let him have his birthday now :)
This is a pretty ardcore microphone :)

Awesome :)

what colour are the other lotus?
Technicaly the same, but they have 2 lines down the nose instead of 1...
I guess they will change the name to Team Caterham ahead of next season?
not confusing at all.
Anything which winds up DannyBaahr is worth the confusion in my book!
:)
To be fair there were 2 red and white teams before so the confusion is just moving rather than growing :)

So the rumour goes.
What an utter joke of a team. Their lack of organisational skills and competence make Hispania look amazing.

"Perez to test Ferrari's 2009 Formula 1 car later this year"
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/93060
The obvious question is: why not Kobayashi?
So he's an FDA member. Aha. Kinda shows you how badly Bianchi's fallen behind...
...because Perez is a Ferrari driver maybe?
Perez was always one step ahead of Bianchi in the queue to be honest.
Yeah, just saw it now.
But shouldn't they have come through into F1 roughly at the same time?
Morning from Tundraland everyone......
I keep forgetting that you have yet to see teh original Star Wars triology, Lukeh....You must see either Empire Strikes Back or Return of the Jedi....
"Do, or do not, there is no try" - Yoda.
But anyways, does anyone else in Sidepodcastland blog about movies that they have seen, I am just trying to look for ideas of various formats...
Not necessarily. Perez, while younger, moved ahead of Bianchi a bit quicker during their F3 years, giving Perez a year headstart to GP2 and F1
To be fair there were 2 red and white teams before so the confusion is just moving rather than growing :)
Was not there a time when the Marboro-McLaren sponourship team had two teams basically, the McLaren team in red and white and another team in a poppy red/orangely colour scheme and otherwise looked identical?
Too long ago for me to remember - the first time I saw McLaren back an F3000 team was in 1997 with Heidfeld
If perez goes to ferrari next year (wild speculation Ahead) they will want to bring bianchi up too? if so where does he go? Sauber? Then were do they put massa?
Kobyashi could be out of a drive if sauber becomes a sort of ferrari jr team
Hope he doesnt end up at renault!
UK store only? :(
Just say Didi. That's his nickname, IIRC. :D
That said, his statement kinda leaves Horner (and to a lesser extent Marko) out to dry...
should be in 6 stores - uk, us, au, ca, fr, de
Didi? ...Didi Kong souds better :)
Keep going back another 20 years, now that I really think about it, the closest team that you can think that would be able to get away with a near-idential colour scheme to McLaren and have the complete support of Maraboro to do would be Penske, who just happened to be in F1 around 1977....
Bianchi is only in his 2nd year in GP2 at the minute and quite frankly, I think he still needs time to cook

Yes. McLaren and Alfa Romeo. Even watching it now still confuses me. On the other hand, helmets were much more visible back then.
ah, that didn't help. 1 sec.
Sauber have been a Ferrari Jr team for much of the last 15 years (bar when they were BMW)

I just got a sudden urge to play Didi Kong (actually, Donkey Kong) on my emulator program.....
They're not that much of a Jr team, IMO. The only driver they've really promoted to Maranello was Massa. Kimi went there only after driving for McLaren - and McLaren picked him over their junior driver Heidfeld.
Did Mclaren have the Marlbro sponsorship in 77? Wasnt it with BRM or someone untill about that time? #NoIdeaOfTeamsOrDates
EJ ran a lot of marlboro sponsorship in the lower formulae
Yes, they did. They switched from BRM to McLaren in 74, I think (I recall Emerson winning the title in Marlboro colors). Hunt definitely won in Marlboro colors in 76.
Yikes! I have just seen a pciutre of the new A-1 ring superimposed on the old Oesterreichring.... Good God!
Not much has changed between the old A-1 ring and the new A-1 (now Red Bull) ring though?
I thought they were only modifying some of the corners as opposed to changing the circuit outright
I think Jordan compared the 2010s RBRing to the 80s Osterreichring, not the 90s A-1 Ring.
There's not much they can change between the old A-1 and the new A-1 ring, I am afraid. Considering that the straight after the first rurn connects to teh back straight going right though the middle apex of the old boschkurve/powerhorse kurve (I could not remember where one started and the other ended. I think the Powerhorse was actually the U-turn section inthe middle of the circuit.
Actually, it the proposal is correct, it is getting back closer to the old Oesterreichring with possbilities for various other circuit layouts. The big thing you notice is that they are going nowhere close repaving the old Helle Licht (chicane or turn) section as it woulb be still completely blind from the start, being behind the crest of the ridge.
Shoot! Need to head otu to work. With luck, the traffic has beaten me....
Bye everyone.

I'll die if Roger comes. EEK.
:D
You said you didn't like the Davis Cup, but you might change your mind :)
and its the weekend before Singapore so I'll actually be in the country! ohhhh I hope they pick Melbourne as the venue.

and I'm not Australian so I could go to such a fiercely patriotic event and cheer for the visitors :D
Roger doesn't usually play it but he has been recently, perhaps he's getting in Olympics practice.
Although if its not in Melbourne that'd be a good excuse for a weekend away :)
venue deadline is august 2nd, i dont like waitiiiiiing.
hehehe don't they know you like to plan early? :)
I am assuming they'll pick Melbourne because they'd be smart enough to realise it'll pull a big crowd, but you never know :)

Afternoon Stuart. Am all blogged out for the afternoon. All quiet now. How are you?

hehe, am just writing to something to plug christine's. people are so demanding :)

Is it true she’s nearly finished her second book? She’ll have overtaken me soon…
Indeed do so sir
i think it nearly killed her, but yeah! she's gone out for a run now, so not sure where she's at with it, but i would guess a release very soon.
So that's that, then.
News Corp pulls out of BSkyB bid
Question is, does that strengthen or weaken their chances to take over F1 from CVC? I'd say the latter, but they may now have money to spare...
Just saw that. Very interesting. Not sure about his F1 bid, but the shares have dropped massively in the last week.
On that tip, highly amused to see Sky News ‘do a Naughtie’ and accidentally drop the c-bomb when introducing our local MP (the culture secretary) the other night.
I await with interest further broadcasts from Bernie via Buspass.com’s ‘business editor’.
Hehehee... I say standards are dropping, but...
I'm more interest in whatever nonsense that Lawrence / Thomson chap comes up with next.
It broke my brain! Just proofing and it should be out in the next week-ish-or-so-maybe-no-promises.

I had Redbush (or Rooibos) tea this week for the first time. Naturally caffeine free and a nice tea taste.
How are we all? I've had an interesting day with a plumber trying to fix the thermostatic cartridge on my shower. Hopefully I won't have any more cold showers.
HI Janna
I'm still very much a Darjeeling man
You've picked the right season to have cold showers at least!
I'm just grateful it was still working (just) when Kai & Lou were here.
not sure i agree. they found the GT star using a playstation in his bedroom/
But then put him and others through a gruelling training program until they were up to speed
I suppose it depends what the plan is after they find them. Just throw them in a car or actually help them learn?
right, but india likely has a shortage of playstation 3 owners. so this thing might be doing the finding?
i do think it's a half-cocked idea, i just don't agree with karun so much either.
Do you think whoever wins will have to deal with lucky coconuts?
:) :)
True, but I do think they need to do more. The lack of national series of any real formulae hurts the search somewhat
From what I can tell, your B&B sounded delightful :)

Hi Leigh.
The flight back was pretty rough. 7 hours, a little kid in front of me whose father put the little darling's seat allllll the way back even though she was sitting forward playing a game on her tray table (it was inches from my face), and noisy folks near me.
But, the personal tv worked, I could eat the gluten free meal they gave me, I had loaded up on my own food and brought it along, and I knew it would be hard to come back anyway.
Oh deary me
Well at least it's something
You know you're welcome back any time :)
Aww, thank you!!! :)
I have to run out to the post office, then I'll be back in a bit.

Yeah, that would make some sense, too, I think.

Plus it's cooled down to 28C.
Oh, and I have an air conditioner. And it's on.
Mr C: Probably a false alarm but there are reports that there could be an exciting addition to the Mac App Store at 1am, apparently it roars
[No one else around will be awake to try it]
Good job!
oh, good thing I re-ordered snow leopard last night. My first order didn't go through. The company I ordered from was out of stock.
cool, i like to be first to try things :)
I hate it when that happens. They've probably had a run of orders recently as it's the only way to get to Leo
Have I done it in time so I can then update to Lion?
As long as you have a Snow Leopard disc, you can install at your leisure. The issue would've been if Snow Leopard was removed from sale when Lion is released.
For those not busting to get Lion, it's generally best to wait a month or two until the first 'point upgrade comes out [When 10.7 become 10.7.1]
Got it. Cool.
Thank goodness I have you guys looking out for me.
I think Caledonophile sounds best
Bagpipeodean?
Brogueophile?
That sounds the best to me, too. :)
I'd almost forgotten that shrieking gift shop!
Everyone has seen one of those terrible gift shops with the music blaring out the front - and inside, but this had the same song over and over on super loud. Oy. It was maddening. I don't see how people work there.
ohh ohhh mac talk.. are you telling me i should wait till august or so to get lion when it finally comes out? :(
The same bagpipe song! It wasn't even a nice tune :D
Ideally, yes. But in reality, I probably won't even take my own advice.
Take from that what you will
Yeah, it was more like a dirge.
I like my Scottish flag sticker, though. It's going on my car next to the Swedish ones. A place of honor. :)
tricky. it's not a big upgrade, shouldn't break too much, but some things might be confusing. lack of saving being the main one.
hehe! i'm super excited, my first new OS for my lovely mac. :)
I would imagine that manually saving wouldn't be lost, even with the autosave feature
Unless, you know different ;)
Yay. Any luck on finding a good cover?
i can still manually save right? not saving a document as i write it goes against everything i've ever been taught! :)
there's no saving in final cut x. i assume that's the future for apple.
i have found a few nice looking ones (kinda have my eye on a nice light blue one) however i need to get the little dent repaired before mum will buy me one (am a cheap uni student now lol)
Who fixes them?
here's more on the auto-save feature: http://www.apple.com/macosx/whats-new/auto-save.html
Funny, I didn't have any allergy issues in the UK, but my allergies are kicking up again here. Boo.
How do you fix a dent rather than replace that portion of the unibody? Is it on the lid or chassis?
I like some of these covers/skins http://www.urbanretro.co.uk/laptop-macbook/skins-covers/
Wrong kind of bees :D
:D
The honey in Scotland was so delicious and different than here, with different flowers and things.
I'm allergic to Connecticut! :)
It's what the keynote said but nothing more, like Time Machine for each file or document
Still doesn't say you can't save manually but I guess it implies that
i got my mac through a company who supplies students with dyslexia with equipment. I had to have a test to see if i was eligible but basically they also supply heaps of things like insurance, warranty, and free repairs free of charge for the years that i'm in education. Seeing as my mac is 6months old, and the dent isn't my fault.. plus i can get it fixed for free it seemed silly not to. then i'll whack a cover on it and it'll never be damaged again :)
Awesome! I'm glad it can be fixed.
aperture doesn't have a save option does it?
in fact lou, neither does lightroom, and that's fine, right?
but.. but... but.. i can't not save something... oh goodness after years of being told 'save it!!!' and having it drummed into me apple are now preparing to tell me 'nah don't bother'.
It's just starting to rain here. Big drops. Time to run! Oh no, I'm inside, unlike the last 2 weeks when I'd hear the big drops.
what happened?
Hopefully they'll fix a cosmetic issue then
:D
I think you may need to sleep in the forest for a while to break that allergen cycle ;)
it's literally the tiniest dent ever.. but i asked them if they could fix it without damaging the macbook etc and they said they could. Plus if they damage it they have to supply me with a new macbook pro :)
ooh, now big thunder!
Where's the dent?
Erm, know you say it...
*now
*lurks* Aperture saves as you go...
it was on the table at uni, and i was cooking dinner. One of my friends said they'd move it out of the way for me and i just blindly said 'yeah thanks' (cooking for 8 people can get a bit distracting). After dinner i realised i didn't know where it was and asked my friend. They gave it to me and it turns out it had been on the floor. someone must have dropped something on it or something as there is the tiniest... yet deepish dent on the top of the casing. I was not impressed. Luckily it hasn't damaged the screen at all.
exactly :)
be interesting to see how it works.
The only problem I have with no saving is that I can see myself duplicating a lot instead and ending up with files all over the place.
i sent them a photo and they said they could. i just need to work out a few days when i feel like i can be without my beautiful mac. :)
they're made for harder knocks than that. anyone for rosé?
They need to have an overnight service :D
I say, if it ain't dented, you're not working it hard enough.
also could be a problem. i can't see it being painless. but it'll be fun.
hehe.
hehe i may or may not have nearly spilt tea over it yesterday...
tbh it looks like someone has stood on it with a stileto heel. but no one was wearing any that night so i'm at odds to what it was but needless to say, no one touches my mac anymore.. not that i really let people before... but...
they really do!
but it doesn't look so pretty with the dent.. poor thing :)
it looks like yours with a dent, it looks like everybody else's without one.
as long as i don't end up loosing work i'm sure i'll end up figuring it out. Need to install it over the summer to try get used to the little changes so it doesn't effect me once i come back to uni.
pretty pleased i used photoshop and lightroom. I like the idea of choosing when to and how to save my pics.
Plus a dent always has a story with it and that's good fun.
hehe i'll put a nice cover on it and it'll look like mine (without the dent) :)
it's apple's fault, they make such pretty things that i don't want damaged (after just 6months! :o )
ahh, so you save manually? didn't know you could do that.
:D like the pink rose keys..:)
true.
I save my photoshops etc.. if i'm working with layers etc then i save as psd as i add each layer till i'm finished and then export to jpeg. that way if anything happens i still have all my work.*
*many a photoshop in progress was lost due to PC failure so i'm over cautious.
but what about lightroom? haven't found a save in that. i just work and close.
Another problem will be the inconsistency. Like the fact there's an apply button in some things and not in others. You'll get used to not saving and then forget to save somewhere you need to.
ohh good question. now you mention it, I suppose i tend to get all my editing done in one go (or put the mac to sleep) then export and just close. good point.
bring on 1am! :)
If you say so..

I wouldn't stay up especially though, just in case
Great post :)
like i'll be asleep!
Well, that's true :)
ooooh.
wait.. is it coming out tomorrow?..
Some rumours, probably inaccurate
ohhh! i've been wondering when that would be out! i'll have to see if it's around in the morning then.
The power may go out here. The lights have flickered, so if I drop out, that's why.
Grab your torch and the keys to the car :)
hehe
No tornado this time. :)
Evennnningggg :D
I have the day off tomorrow. I also have wine. Good combination.
I have pork chops and apple sauce, and I don't have to have a conversation to have dinner. It's a good night all around. :)
Having to explain what I can and can't have to each waitperson got to be a lot. But the food I had on this trip was excellent. It was worth it. :)
Excellent
I thought our food was supposed to be awful
Sorry to explode the myth, it was very good. :)
Evening all,
Just back in from the cinema
Especially in Edinburgh.
If you're ever there try Seadogs, Amoredogs, and A Room in the Town. All were so good I can still recall and taste my meals there right now. And the cafe at Edinburgh castle was excellent, too!
Hi. Good movie?
Senna (again). Small cinema, just me and about 45-50 other people. Front row. NIce.
Great. It will finally open here in August.
It hasn't opened down here at all
nearest is an hour away I think.. which is quite a lot for here.. :)
It was nice actually. After all the anticipation and "clip watching" from the first time I saw, I was really able to fully appreciate tonight
I live in the country so most things are an hour away.
morning all :)
I am hijacking Bastille Day as an excuse to have pain au chocolat for breakfast
I do have theaters closer, but I don't know if it's going to open wide or just in select ones.
No excuse needed. Yummy.
Ooh something else for the daily, ta. :)
Pain au chocolate are very nice. Also get some wine.
Are you doing the daily Pat?
yeah
since i dont like wine i went for chocolate milk. close enough :)
Can I leave two links with you?

Love this little story on Joe's
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2011/07/13/for-the-dreamers-out-there/
should be on the app for replay in a day or two.
...and some news from Austin
http://www.statesman.com/blogs/content/shared-gen/blogs/austin/racing/entries/2011/07/13/county_issues_permits_for_buil.html
there is an app? i just watch them on itunes... i'm so behind the times. A very happy that the white lies set is up now :)
replays are in itunes too, i just prefer the app cause we can beam the video to the telly.
ohhh!! that would make sense. i only watch it on my mac cause it's the largest screen i have that will play it. silly ipod.
set a reminder for coldplay though!
oh my god yes! between you and me and the hundreds of lurkers, keeping my fingers crossed i'll get tickets.. i wont.. of course i don't seem to win things, but both coldplay and itunes have put tickets up, it would just about make my entire year..
My friend won tickets to an intimate Beyonce gig for tomorrow night, so anything can happen tho.
ooooooh. wow.
haha i also applied for friendly fires, and got just about everyone else i know to apply on their itunes for me.. and didn't get tickets, so..... am resigning myself to just paying to see them. it's by no means a problem tho, coldplay and friendly fires are well worth the money. :)
although i'm very confused. are itunes a day behind, everything is saying it's on the Saturday 22nd July... but the 22nd is a Friday. O.o
wait.. what.. friendly fires are today as in thursday. gosh i'm confused. i hate it when today becomes tomorrow... panic over. apologies comments for my confusion, i'll wake up in the morning and... probably still be confused.
ahh, good. so you've not missed them? excellent.
Does it say what year?
apparently not. ahh i love good news, even if it points out that i can't read/comprehend normal english. still confused about the coldplay thing tho, on their site it definitely says saturday, am going to just go with the date and assume they are as confused as me. :)
nope.
