A certain Brazilian driver

Welcome to another day! Its Wednesday the 13th of July and day minus 326.

You'll notice that I am not your usual Wednesday person :-) And that this is therefore not the usual Wednesday post.

For example, today could be about the 26th Anniversary of Live Aid.

It could be about how our favourite train driver turns 37.

We could be readying ourselves for the upcoming race in Germany. Hmmm, too soon? Maybe next week eh?

How about wondering what has happened to the M&S/Mclaren 'partnership'? Seems to be dead and buried, sigh, so no more giant Jenson' in store :-( Although that means no more giant Lewis' in store either…

Or it could be a quick look back to last year, when we were reading all about Alex and his season long trip in F1 land.

Instead, I've been standing in my kitchen, cooking curry, in purple Rabbit Ears (as you do) and thinking on how to begin. I realised I didn't know if I could tell you all about why, but thankfully Christine's response was 'absolutely'!

This is number 14 on a forty item list, that I aim to have completed in 327 days time. Because by then I will be Forty Years Old. And so will a Brazilian F1 driver - I wonder if he has a little list?

(You can find out more about my challenges, and see some evidence ( 0-0 ) at http://doingfortythingsbyforty.tumblr.com/. )

Nice to see LPG doing a daily and I assume the first written by someone wearing purple rabbit ears

  • lou12/07/2011 at 23:15

  • Pat W12/07/2011 at 23:17

Hi LPG. I like the list challenge. I was sure you've done a post before but maybe not. Sharing a birthday with Rubinho is pretty awesome, I'd say. :)

And a happy birthday to the train driver..

  • Kai back home12/07/2011 at 23:23

    Yay LPG. :) Well done.

I'm watching the Toronto Indy replay on Versus. The Benny Hill video did cover it, Pat. hehe

  • Jordan F112/07/2011 at 23:23

    Greetings everyone....

I am very impressed with #38 on your hit list, there, LPG, but it beggs with question "Which sword are you going to use?" for as Steven Roy would say.....

"Ack, lass, ye canna foil a claymore*..."

    The real anicent (Braveheart) ones....

  • lou12/07/2011 at 23:24

Ohhh and yay for using a glenn dunbar pic, his shots are awesome.

  • Steven Roy12/07/2011 at 23:24

"Ack, lass, ye canna foil a claymore*..."

I say that all the time :)

    Surprisingly well. :)

Shame about the crashes really because I actually enjoyed the race.

    hehe

I miss hearing Scottish accents all around me. I love Edinburgh.

  • Jordan F112/07/2011 at 23:27

"Ack, lass, ye canna foil a claymore*..."

I say that all the time :)

The scary part is that you are saying that as the chief engineer of some construction site...

  • Kai back home12/07/2011 at 23:28

Shame about the crashes really because I actually enjoyed the race.

Will Power just had his venting session during the interview. He's so angry.

  • Steven Roy12/07/2011 at 23:30

You need to find a Scottish radio station on the net

  • Littlepurplegoth12/07/2011 at 23:30

Ah no... Rubes birthday us about a fortnight before mine... It's just nice to know I'm younger than someone (just)... I don't think there is anyone in f1 with my birthday...,

  • Kai back home12/07/2011 at 23:31

You need to find a Scottish radio station on the net

    *makes a note*

I like doing stuff like that.

I have a long list of things to do now that I'm back.

There are a lot of Americans in Edinburgh. They won't miss me. :(

Still thinking about doing a rankings F1 blog...

    Couple of questions:

Should i base it only on the current F1 points ( so only driver who finish in the top 10 for at least one race make it into the rankings, or should i adopt a different system?

Christine is it hard to do those tables you do for the rankings with the up and down green arrows in wordpress?

  • F1Wolf13/07/2011 at 08:37

wanted to ask earlier - is it on purpose that the pictures in realtime in Chrome are kind of falling out of the think black line frame ?

  • Christine13/07/2011 at 08:37

Nope. Realtime is a suboptimal experience.

They're not that much of a Jr team, IMO. The only driver they've really promoted to Maranello was Massa. Kimi went there only after driving for McLaren - and McLaren picked him over their junior driver Heidfeld.

  • Nick (@Twiger)13/07/2011 at 12:45

Keep going back another 20 years, now that I really think about it, the closest team that you can think that would be able to get away with a near-idential colour scheme to McLaren and have the complete support of Maraboro to do would be Penske, who just happened to be in F1 around 1977....

Did Mclaren have the Marlbro sponsorship in 77? Wasnt it with BRM or someone untill about that time? #NoIdeaOfTeamsOrDates

  • Nick (@Twiger)13/07/2011 at 12:45

EJ ran a lot of marlboro sponsorship in the lower formulae

  • Journeyer13/07/2011 at 12:47

Did Mclaren have the Marlbro sponsorship in 77? Wasnt it with BRM or someone untill about that time? #NoIdeaOfTeamsOrDates

Yes, they did. They switched from BRM to McLaren in 74, I think (I recall Emerson winning the title in Marlboro colors). Hunt definitely won in Marlboro colors in 76.

Yikes! I have just seen a pciutre of the new A-1 ring superimposed on the old Oesterreichring.... Good God!

Not much has changed between the old A-1 ring and the new A-1 (now Red Bull) ring though?

Yikes! I have just seen a pciutre of the new A-1 ring superimposed on the old Oesterreichring.... Good God!

I thought they were only modifying some of the corners as opposed to changing the circuit outright

  • Journeyer13/07/2011 at 13:05

I thought they were only modifying some of the corners as opposed to changing the circuit outright

I think Jordan compared the 2010s RBRing to the 80s Osterreichring, not the 90s A-1 Ring.

  • Jordan F113/07/2011 at 13:06

Yikes! I have just seen a pciutre of the new A-1 ring superimposed on the old Oesterreichring.... Good God!

Not much has changed between the old A-1 ring and the new A-1 (now Red Bull) ring though?

There's not much they can change between the old A-1 and the new A-1 ring, I am afraid. Considering that the straight after the first rurn connects to teh back straight going right though the middle apex of the old boschkurve/powerhorse kurve (I could not remember where one started and the other ended. I think the Powerhorse was actually the U-turn section inthe middle of the circuit.

Actually, it the proposal is correct, it is getting back closer to the old Oesterreichring with possbilities for various other circuit layouts. The big thing you notice is that they are going nowhere close repaving the old Helle Licht (chicane or turn) section as it woulb be still completely blind from the start, being behind the crest of the ridge.

At first I thought it was a dig about slow cars being likened to Monty Python horses :)

    hehe

Yeah, that would make some sense, too, I think.

    Hi again folks.

what's the airspeed velocity of an unladen sutil?

  • Bassano13/07/2011 at 21:00

    Hi again folks.

    Hey Kai

Are you commenting from the fridge or have you found a cooler alternative than the sauna that is CT?

  • Bassano13/07/2011 at 21:01

what's the airspeed velocity of an unladen sutil?

Is that in the wet or dry? ;)

  • Kai13/07/2011 at 21:02

I'm sitting here next to the coconut milk inside the fridge. It's coconut day.

Plus it's cooled down to 28C.

Oh, and I have an air conditioner. And it's on.

  • Bassano13/07/2011 at 21:03

Mr C: Probably a false alarm but there are reports that there could be an exciting addition to the Mac App Store at 1am, apparently it roars

oh, good thing I re-ordered snow leopard last night. My first order didn't go through. The company I ordered from was out of stock.

I hate it when that happens. They've probably had a run of orders recently as it's the only way to get to Leo

  • Kai13/07/2011 at 21:08

Have I done it in time so I can then update to Lion?

  • Bassano13/07/2011 at 21:11

Have I done it in time so I can then update to Lion?

As long as you have a Snow Leopard disc, you can install at your leisure. The issue would've been if Snow Leopard was removed from sale when Lion is released.

For those not busting to get Lion, it's generally best to wait a month or two until the first 'point upgrade comes out [When 10.7 become 10.7.1]

  • Kai13/07/2011 at 21:12

I'd almost forgotten that shrieking gift shop!

  • Kai13/07/2011 at 21:20

I'd almost forgotten that shrieking gift shop!

Everyone has seen one of those terrible gift shops with the music blaring out the front - and inside, but this had the same song over and over on super loud. Oy. It was maddening. I don't see how people work there.

The same bagpipe song! It wasn't even a nice tune :D

Ideally, yes. But in reality, I probably won't even take my own advice.

Take from that what you will

  • Kai13/07/2011 at 21:23

The same bagpipe song! It wasn't even a nice tune :D

Yeah, it was more like a dirge.

I like my Scottish flag sticker, though. It's going on my car next to the Swedish ones. A place of honor. :)

tricky. it's not a big upgrade, shouldn't break too much, but some things might be confusing. lack of saving being the main one.

  • lou13/07/2011 at 21:24

hehe! i'm super excited, my first new OS for my lovely mac. :)

I would imagine that manually saving wouldn't be lost, even with the autosave feature

    Unless, you know different ;)

  • Kai13/07/2011 at 21:24

i can still manually save right? not saving a document as i write it goes against everything i've ever been taught! :)

  • Mr C13/07/2011 at 21:25

there's no saving in final cut x. i assume that's the future for apple.

i have found a few nice looking ones (kinda have my eye on a nice light blue one) however i need to get the little dent repaired before mum will buy me one (am a cheap uni student now lol)

How do you fix a dent rather than replace that portion of the unibody? Is it on the lid or chassis?

    I like some of these covers/skins http://www.urbanretro.co.uk/laptop-macbook/skins-covers/

It's what the keynote said but nothing more, like Time Machine for each file or document

Still doesn't say you can't save manually but I guess it implies that

  • lou13/07/2011 at 21:31

    Who fixes them?

i got my mac through a company who supplies students with dyslexia with equipment. I had to have a test to see if i was eligible but basically they also supply heaps of things like insurance, warranty, and free repairs free of charge for the years that i'm in education. Seeing as my mac is 6months old, and the dent isn't my fault.. plus i can get it fixed for free it seemed silly not to. then i'll whack a cover on it and it'll never be damaged again :)

  • Kai13/07/2011 at 21:32

in fact lou, neither does lightroom, and that's fine, right?

but.. but... but.. i can't not save something... oh goodness after years of being told 'save it!!!' and having it drummed into me apple are now preparing to tell me 'nah don't bother'.

  • Kai13/07/2011 at 21:33

It's just starting to rain here. Big drops. Time to run! Oh no, I'm inside, unlike the last 2 weeks when I'd hear the big drops.

  • lou13/07/2011 at 21:34

it's literally the tiniest dent ever.. but i asked them if they could fix it without damaging the macbook etc and they said they could. Plus if they damage it they have to supply me with a new macbook pro :)

  • Kai13/07/2011 at 21:34

  • Lynch13/07/2011 at 21:36

*lurks* Aperture saves as you go...

  • lou13/07/2011 at 21:36

    what happened?

it was on the table at uni, and i was cooking dinner. One of my friends said they'd move it out of the way for me and i just blindly said 'yeah thanks' (cooking for 8 people can get a bit distracting). After dinner i realised i didn't know where it was and asked my friend. They gave it to me and it turns out it had been on the floor. someone must have dropped something on it or something as there is the tiniest... yet deepish dent on the top of the casing. I was not impressed. Luckily it hasn't damaged the screen at all.

  • Mr C13/07/2011 at 21:37

    Erm, now you say it...

    exactly :)

be interesting to see how it works.

  • Christine13/07/2011 at 21:37

The only problem I have with no saving is that I can see myself duplicating a lot instead and ending up with files all over the place.

  • lou13/07/2011 at 21:37

Hopefully they'll fix a cosmetic issue then

i sent them a photo and they said they could. i just need to work out a few days when i feel like i can be without my beautiful mac. :)

I say, if it ain't dented, you're not working it hard enough.

  • Mr C13/07/2011 at 21:38

The only problem I have with no saving is that I can see myself duplicating a lot instead and ending up with files all over the place.

also could be a problem. i can't see it being painless. but it'll be fun.

  • Mr C13/07/2011 at 21:39

I say, if it ain't dented, you're not working it hard enough.

    hehe.

  • lou13/07/2011 at 21:39

they're made for harder knocks than that. anyone for rosé?

hehe i may or may not have nearly spilt tea over it yesterday...

tbh it looks like someone has stood on it with a stileto heel. but no one was wearing any that night so i'm at odds to what it was but needless to say, no one touches my mac anymore.. not that i really let people before... but...

  • lou13/07/2011 at 21:40

They need to have an overnight service :D

    they really do!

  • lou13/07/2011 at 21:40

I say, if it ain't dented, you're not working it hard enough.

but it doesn't look so pretty with the dent.. poor thing :)

  • Mr C13/07/2011 at 21:41

it looks like yours with a dent, it looks like everybody else's without one.

also could be a problem. i can't see it being painless. but it'll be fun.

as long as i don't end up loosing work i'm sure i'll end up figuring it out. Need to install it over the summer to try get used to the little changes so it doesn't effect me once i come back to uni.

pretty pleased i used photoshop and lightroom. I like the idea of choosing when to and how to save my pics.

  • Christine13/07/2011 at 21:42

it looks like yours with a dent, it looks like everybody else's without one.

Plus a dent always has a story with it and that's good fun.

  • lou13/07/2011 at 21:42

it looks like yours with a dent, it looks like everybody else's without one.

hehe i'll put a nice cover on it and it'll look like mine (without the dent) :)

it's apple's fault, they make such pretty things that i don't want damaged (after just 6months! :o )

  • Mr C13/07/2011 at 21:43

pretty pleased i used photoshop and lightroom. I like the idea of choosing when to and how to save my pics.

ahh, so you save manually? didn't know you could do that.

    true.

  • lou13/07/2011 at 21:45

ahh, so you save manually? didn't know you could do that.

I save my photoshops etc.. if i'm working with layers etc then i save as psd as i add each layer till i'm finished and then export to jpeg. that way if anything happens i still have all my work.*

*many a photoshop in progress was lost due to PC failure so i'm over cautious.

  • Mr C13/07/2011 at 21:46

I save my photoshops etc.. if i'm working with layers etc then i save as psd as i add each layer till i'm finished and then export to jpeg. that way if anything happens i still have all my work.*

but what about lightroom? haven't found a save in that. i just work and close.

  • Christine13/07/2011 at 21:47

Another problem will be the inconsistency. Like the fact there's an apply button in some things and not in others. You'll get used to not saving and then forget to save somewhere you need to.

  • lou13/07/2011 at 21:48

but what about lightroom? haven't found a save in that. i just work and close.

ohh good question. now you mention it, I suppose i tend to get all my editing done in one go (or put the mac to sleep) then export and just close. good point.

  • Mr C13/07/2011 at 21:48

Sorry to explode the myth, it was very good. :)

    Especially in Edinburgh.

If you're ever there try Seadogs, Amoredogs, and A Room in the Town. All were so good I can still recall and taste my meals there right now. And the cafe at Edinburgh castle was excellent, too!

oh my god yes! between you and me and the hundreds of lurkers, keeping my fingers crossed i'll get tickets.. i wont.. of course i don't seem to win things, but both coldplay and itunes have put tickets up, it would just about make my entire year..

My friend won tickets to an intimate Beyonce gig for tomorrow night, so anything can happen tho.

haha i also applied for friendly fires, and got just about everyone else i know to apply on their itunes for me.. and didn't get tickets, so..... am resigning myself to just paying to see them. it's by no means a problem tho, coldplay and friendly fires are well worth the money. :)

  • lou13/07/2011 at 23:36

  • lou13/07/2011 at 23:37

apparently not. ahh i love good news, even if it points out that i can't read/comprehend normal english. still confused about the coldplay thing tho, on their site it definitely says saturday, am going to just go with the date and assume they are as confused as me. :)
