    hello tuesday.

The eternal optimist Jarno Trulli has branded the controversy over off-throttle diffuser blowing at Silverstone as 'ridiculous.'

damnit, that's the second time in a fortnight i've agreed with jarno.

I don't have time to the old F1 Debriefs - but maybe you can try Episode 91 (http://sidepodcast.com/post/episode-91-its-all-lovely-and-cuddly) or Episode 97 (http://sidepodcast.com/post/episode-97-its-better-than-silence-cos-silence-is-bad)

i am doing a walking lap of Sunday's 5k course to suss out how many hills i have to tackle. It's not bad but seeing hundreds of people running The Tan on the other side of the road is quite offputting. They're FAST!

there's one really big hill but it's allll downhill. Which must mean the rest of the course slopes uphill but it's not sloppy enough to even notice.

I hope the result will not be current GP2 + Abu Dhabi. Would be nice if they added races in Asia proper as the F1 weekends in Malaysia, China, Korea, Singapore etc are in dire need of some decent support races ...

when I was watching the race on Sunday and they were at one stage talking about how Webber won last year I was thinking 'imagine if the world championship was like tennis where you only move up if you improve on what you did last year'

i can't be arsed to keep assigning people to circles. can see us ending up with one circle called "stuff" and everything and everybody being in it.

it depends on your need, i think. if you don't need to segregate your content distribution (i.e. everything is posted to public), then i don't think G+ is for you.

But I don't agree with this:

I do not think for a moment that it will affect his ongoing contract negotiations at Red Bull. Owner Dietrich Mateschitz wants a fighter; he wants two guys battling hard for wins. He does not want a pussycat.

Surely it will affect things if Webber feels he's not being treated fairly and wants to see change (either in policy or compensation) if he's to stay?

Allegedly Bernie paid Max $300 million which necessitated a quick move to Monaco for tax reasons. If Bernie was paying Max off for his contribution to Bernie's billions over the years it is not unreasonable to assume others received similar if slightly less obscene amounts. Those others would be Charlie Whiting, Herbie Blash, Pasquale etc.

Occasionally. After 881 episodes, I'm pretty good at estimating the length of the show, but it does happen. There's also a second or two of flexibility in terms of the music as well.

I was considering a post about the F1Minute process to celebrate the 900th episode, but I'm thinking it might be too self-indulgent :)

"Our Grand Prix is far bigger than all Britain has to offer, says Bahrain chief"

On what evidence, pray tell? It might be a bigger deal to its home government, but that's because the British GP is not a government race and quite proud of the fact (yes the BRDC has tried to get the government to invest but they're pretty proud of themselves when they successfully run the event without that help).

Only my assumption based on the money paid to Max. You have to wonder why the FIA never investigated that payment. Bernie allegedly pays Max $300 million several years after Max sells him 100 years commercial rights for $100 million. I know the FIA never really understood conflict of interest but this is written in big red capital letters a mile high

Because Max was in charge of the FIA, of course! It's a tad difficult to investigate a financial issue at a company if the suspected root of it has the power to cut off your power to investigate at any time. Even if there was genuinely nothing to be afraid of, the investigators may have been reluctant on those grounds. Also, if the money didn't enter the FIA in the lump sum but instead entered in installments/not at all, it would have been difficult to trace the origin of the collective payments, given that Max would have been legally entitled to deny his private financial records to anyone short of the police or national tax inspectorate.

  • Alianora La Canta12/07/2011 at 21:45

Allegedly Bernie paid Max $300 million which necessitated a quick move to Monaco for tax reasons.

I thought that was due to the European Arrest Warrant, which meant Max had to move out of the EU in case he was charged with something (at least during his tenure as President?) A payoff might have determined the country, but the move had to happen regardless.

  • Alianora La Canta12/07/2011 at 21:47

working there is one thing, but you can't move in without a few million to spare.

You can if you have a friend willing to pick up the tab. All you need then is enough to fund modest expenses plus whatever is needed to satisfy the friend paying for the house/apartment/boat.

Max claimed it was due to the European Arrest Warrant but that was bogus. He would still have been subject to it any time he was in the EU.

A European Arrest Warrant can't be issued for an investigation, only a criminal proceeding. Max would merely have needed to leave the EU upon hearing a relevant investigation was arising to avoid trouble (on average it takes 43 days for an EAW to be generated for an individual unwilling to give themselves up to the authorities). It would have made it difficult for him to do his job as President, but it wouldn't have been too difficult for him to make the FIA's workings move to Geneva permanently.

I typed "Monaco" into B&Q's store finder and the nearest branches are all in Wales; 3 of them near Swansea...

That's strange, I would have thought one of the south coast towns would be closest.

  • Alianora La Canta12/07/2011 at 22:01

so how many million do you need to get into monaco, and has any engineer ever been paid enough in 10 years to do that?

You need enough for a house, apartment or boat. You can rent them from a friend, in which case it's whatever the agreed rent is. Otherwise a small apartment can be as little as £134,000 - less than the price of a typical house where I live.

By Monagasque law you also need a minimum number of millions in the bank, last I checked (2005) it was 3 million euro although I may be off a bit.

There is a minimum bank balance, but it's only enough to meet reasonable expenses. The other problem is that 2 current residents must give character references.

Hamilton may be on a waiting list if he wants something pricey - the bigger/more ostentatious you want your house to be, the more problems you will have in getting in. And if you want your residence to be a boat, getting a berth may well be even more difficult.

3 million Euros was 2 million pounds when the Euro was introduced (it's now quite a lot more than that). It's not clear when Charlie moved to Monaco.

Switzerland. And yes, they're considering making racing drivers pay tax like most other professions (they're currently exempt due to the ban on racing in Switzerland).

I'm sure - though given what sort of prices Monaco charges, my comments and Pat's may be quite compatible. The apartment appears to be the cheap part of being in Monaco...

You need the house and the character references. I don't see how the jobs Charlie has done is incompatible with having 2 million pounds in the bank. With careful saving and investment, a lot is possible. Remember he's been an engineer and a paid FIA official as well as a mechanic, so Charlie's situation is already not normal.

There's definitely a minimum amount and it has to go into an account in one of their banks. The amount might well be different these days after with all the hoo-haa about tax havens, which is where we came in with Hamilton having to move. But I'm sure they still check.

  • Alianora La Canta12/07/2011 at 22:27

Pat said 3 million Euros, which at 2002 rates was 2 million pounds (of course this assumes Charlie moved then - there's no indication on anything I've seen of when exactly he decided to move to Monaco). That's not an assumption.

But if saying reasonable stuff is "nonsensical discussions"...

none of us know. therefore we've gone as far as we can. i can't be arsed to prove anyone wrong, i don't think it's normal that an engineer of an f1 team lives in monaco.

And we know Charlie wasn't in a normal situation in the first place. I'm disappointed that the assumptions you've decided to impose on the situation are barring any rational analysis of what may or may not have happened.

    Goodnight.

  • Andy Taylor12/07/2011 at 22:31

According to the website I've just read, you don't need millions in the bank to become a resident of Monaco, just to fill out the forms required. One piece of evidence is proof of ownership of a property or a rental agreement. There's nothing about depositing cash anywhere.

I actually wasn't going to look it up but now I have:

If you want to be a resident of Monaco, you must live in Monaco for 6 months out of the year. In addition, you must deposit at least 400K Euros into a Monaco bank. In addition, you will need a property deed. Before you pack your bags, you should know that the lowest prices for property range at about 400K euros. For all intent and purposes, in order to legally reside in Monaco, you will usually need to be a millionaire. - http://www.expatintel.com/expat-monaco.shtml

How about the actual website of the Monaco government, in English too:

    http://www.monaco.gouv.mc/devwww/wwwnew.nsf/1909$/cebee8d8045f8169c1256f94003858c0gb?OpenDocument&8Gb

So it looks like you need one of several pieces of paper to prove that you have the means to live in the principality, one accepted form is from a bank. Opening a bank account requires the ~€400k deposit.

It does look like you can go and live there provided you have a job in the principality without opening a bank account.

There will be spacewalks, but this is the last to involve the shuttle. They were putting the broken ammonia pump into the loading bay so that engineers can take it apart on the ground to figure out what is wrong with it.
