Hello Sidepodcast fans, it is Tuesday the 12th July 2011. Two days removed from the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. I hope your start to the week has been good, but fear not Tuesdays are generally better than Mondays
F1 News
- Mark Webber has said the team orders issued by Christian Horner during the closing stages of the race were unnecessary as after ignoring the orders the two of them managed to race without colliding. Meanwhile Christian Horner has said it would be completely stupid to allow the pair of them to race.
- Renault are pondering whether rearward-facing exhausts will help them turn their season around and will try it out during the German Grand Prix, goodbye forward exhausts?
- Ferrari have said they are not getting carried away with expectations after British Grand Prix win, it still seems impossible that anyone will overturn Sebastian Vettel's lead in the championship but Ferrari are aiming for more wins in the second half.
- Williams thinks it is 'likely' it will keep both Rubens Barrichello and Pastor Maldonado on board for next year. How very encouraging to its drivers.
- McLaren has vowed not to throw the towel in on its chances for the remainder of the season, coming on the back of a couple of disappointing races it seems tensions are running high as the team battle to re-find their form.
- Toro Rosso's won't be revealing their 2012 driver line-up until the end of this season, Sebastien Buemi and Jaime Alguersuari have been put under pressure to perform this year and with Daniel Ricciardo in the wings it remains to be seen who will stay and who might be up for the chop.
- The eternal optimist Jarno Trulli has branded the controversy over off-throttle diffuser blowing at Silverstone as 'ridiculous.' While he does seem grumpy a lot of the time, he isn't far of the mark on this one.
- And finally Lukeh has a brilliant blog post on the very awesome Ted Kravits, who will incidently miss the next two races after the birth of his baby daughter.
Non-F1 Stuff
- Google have been busy lately bringing out Google+ along with a massive overhaul of their design across all their products, and YouTube is no exception, currently the new look is in an opt-in phase. The name of this overhaul of YouTube, Cosmic Panda!
- Ever fancied turning your iPad into a PADD from Star Trek? yes? Well now you can thanks to a brand new app.<
Now I must leave you once more so all that is left for me to do is say I hope you have a good day and I shall see you in the comments!

Interesting post. Do we know who Conradder is?
conor from twitter. he's been tweeting us for years, but i didn't know he had a blog.
OK. I have never seen that blog before either but looks well worth reading in future
have asked about posts from the rest of the weekend :)

Looking for a classic sidepodcast episode.
Here here race fans...i am looking for a classic sidepodcast episode. We were asked what we did in the off season to get ready for formula 1. there were several good responses read on the show and i want to find that segment, but scouring the archives is not proving fruitful. I know it was before april 2009, just cant remember the episode number but i believe it was around the 32-36 minute mark in the episode..... help sidepodcast fans...help...
thanks in advance
I don't have time to the old F1 Debriefs - but maybe you can try Episode 91 (http://sidepodcast.com/post/episode-91-its-all-lovely-and-cuddly) or Episode 97 (http://sidepodcast.com/post/episode-97-its-better-than-silence-cos-silence-is-bad)
Here's the F1 Debriefs from around that time you had in mind.
http://sidepodcast.com/category/f1-debrief/page/7
thank you Journeyer, but couldnt find the segment...yet i am not deterred.... you are mentioned at minute 32 in episode 97 :)

Good morning. Kai is at the airport, checking in
For SidepodTracking purposes, her flight is the BA175 at 10:00
[not here]
i am doing a walking lap of Sunday's 5k course to suss out how many hills i have to tackle. It's not bad but seeing hundreds of people running The Tan on the other side of the road is quite offputting. They're FAST!
morning folks
i feel like I've been walking for ages. I'm actually astounded i can run this far
That's a good plan. I wish I'd done that!
there's one really big hill but it's allll downhill. Which must mean the rest of the course slopes uphill but it's not sloppy enough to even notice.
What time does your run start?
10.30am. Too early for me!
I hope to get in a couple of runs between now and then since I've finally kicked my stupid cold. I am regretting my time off because I know I could have done better!
It's not as far when you run 'cause it's quicker
:D
Silly germs are not helpful!
mine were timed better than Kaits, she's just gotten sick this week and she has a 10k to do, so I guess that's a small positive
F1 people get such lovely perks - this chocolate cake is at least the 4th cake at Force India since Saturday due to a combination of birthdays and parties...

yay!
the app update adds rotation support to the iphone version too (which has been much requested). it's a universal app, so anyone who already bought the iphone app, gets the update and the ipad version for free.

London 2012 Monopoly!
It's so shamelessly moneygrabbing, I love it.
aaand removed :)
Had a briefest glimpse - was that an advert?
odd article with a sneaky link that kind of explained the oddity :-)
I didn't clink on the link to be honest
That and several of stats in it were woefully incorrect
me neither but can see where the links point without clicking on it
I never even hovered to check where it led to tbh
i thought it was alright, but no article gets that many complaints so quickly so we removed it. more hassle than it was worth :)
Aaahh I see - I didn't even hang around to see the comments. I saw a few glaring errors and just came back here.
now, back to the business in hand... ipad app!
http://itunes.apple.com/app/f1minute/id441832606
i'm afraid i already own it and i demand you produce something else for me to buy. NOW.
Hello!
ohhhh! not that it helps.. but i'd buy it if i had an ipad..
hehe, it nearly killed me getting that far.
i heard christine has a book coming out soon though.
but i haven't finished the first one! my 'reading' category on my kindle currently contains 10 books and although i do generally read more than one at once, i can't read ten. I should get off the internet and read more.
:)
we need an "as recommended amy" post about kindle books.
But Christine does her Casual Reader posts so well! :D The market is covered.
Amy's Book Club? :D
I am currently reading this as it was recommended to me by quite a few people. It's not quite what I expected though, it's almost a how-to guide on how to be anorexic.
for some reason i assumed they were all f1 books..
none at all :)
the selection out there isn't really that wide :(
true enough.
i got the sample of the bernie book but it wasn't very well written so i didnt proceed with purchase.
I'm currently reading this...

...with this directly aftrerward...

speaking of him I see theres a rumour that he'll be played by the guy from home and away.
I don't care that hes Thor now, to me he'll always be the guy from home and away and that means I will not take anything he is in seriously :)
Gp2 have merged with GP2AS, which was basically GP2 Abu Dhabi series
With it being directed by Ron Howard, I can't imagine being awfully truthful.
Well, they said they would.
I hope the result will not be current GP2 + Abu Dhabi. Would be nice if they added races in Asia proper as the F1 weekends in Malaysia, China, Korea, Singapore etc are in dire need of some decent support races ...
Autosport are claiming it as "Exclusivly predicted by us" but i dont remember reading it
For now, it will be GP2 + Abu Dhabi and maybe Qatar
Exclusive? Nonsense. There was a meeting about it after the Turkey GP weekend.
sad but expected unless someone comes in with bag of $$$ and decides to fly the GP2 circus around all continents ...
... at least they could come to Macau in November to trash the cars at the end of the season :-)
They original intention was to China, Malaysia, etc... but the price of 3-4 would've out the same as the full European season, so it never flourished

I think I do remember reading something in the magazine about it a while back, but I highly doubt it was "exclusive" speculation!
And hi :). Been a while since I posted on a Daily thread!
Hi Kate
presumably with the loss of bahrain, it could be said to be inevitable. there must be money in this predicting business somewhere.
National Lottery?
maybe AUTOSPORT is the key to my $30 million
not really motorsport related. although i'm surprised castrol haven't considered "national lottery rankings".
Ha! I purposefully avoid the Castrol page of the magazine nowadays. It annoys me too much.
I dont think they actually said it was exclusive, but there were some tweets to that effect.
They should do what indycar are doing whith the big prize pot for this 1 off race, get some old drivers back, maybe a few lemans guys in too :)
Hehee... I don't think RB has any drivers signed up for the IndyCar offering yet
didn't realise it was in the mag too.
i do like the new twitter and facebook buttons on autosport, as it shows which posts are popular and which ones everybody ignores. the latest castrol post got 12 retweets (some of those autosport staff) and 0 facebook likes. oh dear.
0 likes! That's just painful.
when I was watching the race on Sunday and they were at one stage talking about how Webber won last year I was thinking 'imagine if the world championship was like tennis where you only move up if you improve on what you did last year'
Then I remembered this is exactly what Castrol does and I felt ashamed of myself.
It gets a page. I immediately avert my eyes if I notice anything predominantly green.
i almost felt sorry for it :)
on the plus side, the castrol game thing they have seems a bit more sensible. maybe they'll quietly drop the rankings idea in favour of that.
:)
Its not a bad idea to track relative performance year to year.
Autosport just totally overblow the whole thing though
if they did it for each motorsport category, that would be an improvement. but trying to compare dario to lewis is embarrassing.
thats true. shame, disappearing!
An F1 only version for teams and drivers could be really good, a sort of 'rolling championship'
might make a nice blog thing to do...
Please do! Although I have little doubt Vettel would have an even bigger lead than what he has now, the midfield might make for interesting reading.
Maybe this evening :)
they've also added google+. any plans to add that to sidepodcast? ;)
it's on f1minute already, just haven't had time.
Ah fair enough. was just being cheeky :)
i don't get the linkedin buttons though...
Yeh, but the +1 buttons are a tad pointless at the moment as they only act as a bookmark type button, and doesnt actually add to your feed as a "share" ... maybe this will change...
they bump up in the search results though. any page you've "plussed" will appear before a similar page that you haven't. i think.
Never imagined Scott Dixon as either a jazz fan or a camper.
Hmm.. we'll see how google+ evolves...
i can't be arsed to keep assigning people to circles. can see us ending up with one circle called "stuff" and everything and everybody being in it.
Still don't see the hook to be honest. It's all a bit clunky and all over the place
Hahaa
:D
i'm still not even on it, i made no effort with buzz and i'm making no effort with +
he has to say that, after saying 'no team orders at Red Bull of course' about 2 laps before there was :D
In all fairness, I can't help with agree with a lot of what he wrote
it depends on your need, i think. if you don't need to segregate your content distribution (i.e. everything is posted to public), then i don't think G+ is for you.
:)
But I don't agree with this:
Surely it will affect things if Webber feels he's not being treated fairly and wants to see change (either in policy or compensation) if he's to stay?
Jarno-optimist-Trulli: "I hope that in Hungary we should have a new power steering. So this I hope will also help my feeling with the car."
Don't we all, Jarno!

looks like the red bull community are struggling a bit @redbullf1spy just tweeted this: http://community.redbullracing.com/users/Team-Intercom/blogs/index.cfm/2011/7/12/fanzone-moderation-an-explanation
No community deserves abuse though
i don't think the community were, i think the team were. although if they were moderating that hard maybe they got grief too.
Well, maybe abuse within the community directed at the team.
Some people definitely don't like to be hushed.
how can charlie whiting afford to live in monaco??
Amid diffuser row Sam Michael askd if he feels sorry for Charlie Whiting:'He lives in Monaco, don't feel too sorry for him' with a grin #F1
https://twitter.com/AdorimediaF1/statuses/90779215846313985
FIA subsidy?
He was part of Max's excuse. Max had to go to Monaco so he set up an FIA office there for the two of them. No doubt Charlie picked up a few million over the years to keep his mouth shut
working there is one thing, but you can't move in without a few million to spare.
Allegedly Bernie paid Max $300 million which necessitated a quick move to Monaco for tax reasons. If Bernie was paying Max off for his contribution to Bernie's billions over the years it is not unreasonable to assume others received similar if slightly less obscene amounts. Those others would be Charlie Whiting, Herbie Blash, Pasquale etc.
interesting.
Only my assumption based on the money paid to Max. You have to wonder why the FIA never investigated that payment. Bernie allegedly pays Max $300 million several years after Max sells him 100 years commercial rights for $100 million. I know the FIA never really understood conflict of interest but this is written in big red capital letters a mile high
Oh dear STeven,
Surely you can't possibly be suggesting something controversial about Bernie and the FIA??
;)
ME?
Not at all. Nope. Not me
If you charged into the FIA headquarters doing this, you would have my everlasting respect

Listening to it.
One question. How many times have you found yourself in a situation where you had to repeat the whole F1M podcast because it was too long?
Quite difficult to do it always exactly...
Occasionally. After 881 episodes, I'm pretty good at estimating the length of the show, but it does happen. There's also a second or two of flexibility in terms of the music as well.
I was considering a post about the F1Minute process to celebrate the 900th episode, but I'm thinking it might be too self-indulgent :)
can't recommend them, they're expensive to make and a pain in the bum to scale.
Afternoon
Not at all, I think there'd be a lot of interest
When we did the 12 hour long sidepodradio event Christine did F1 minute live every hour and with re-writes each hour. Something like 3 or 4 times out of 12 she was within half a second of the minute live.
Definitely not indulgent. Do it.
Hello
Hey everyone
I have a few blog links for you, it's taken me a bit of time to finish these write ups but,

Hi Lou.
I will read your blog posts later.
Hello. Cool, thanks Lou
How's Steven?
Yay for double Petrov!
thats cool
it seemed wrong not to include him so much, he really was everywhere. i think he was following us :)
Hehehe. There are definitely worse people to be followed by.
Marc Gene would be one. he's so damn grumpy at the festival.
Eeeevening :D
Hi Alison
heya.
Same as ever.
Working on a little top secret project. #confidential
;)
Are you in the Channel Islands looking at Nazi fortifications yet? :)
Locked in more like? Sadly no, no HOLIDAY for another 3 weeks.
This is a new top secret project
Mwah hah hah haa
You think Nick wants to lock you in?
I wouldn't be surprised. It all seems like some elaborate trap.
Enjoy a little something from the sidepodcast.com back catalogue.

Lou,
In your Saturday post you say Crofty was interviewing Colin Chapman. He died in 1982.
Oops.
sorry. will fix. meant Clive i think. sorry.
That makes more sense. I was trying to figure out who you meant and I didn't even think of him.
blogging with a headache, i'm bound to make mistakes! lol
I made a similar mistake with my last space shuttle post.
Not that I said Colin Chapman was on the space shuttle

Are you and Christine available for a 2 minute skype chat some time? I have a little something you may be interested in that can't be said in public.
yup, this evening okay? we'll be setting up to record debrief around 8pm i would guess.

Evening folks
I see GMM are spreading rumours of Kimi replacing Webber at Red Bull. Good on them. Perhaps I should lie down now...
Yes, the Bild newspaper was the first who said it
Boredom sets in early in the German motorsport news industry then
also the Audi/Red Bull rumours are doing the rounds again.
F1 Big Picture ping: http://www.f1bigpicture.com/news/happy-go-lucky
Where's the nearest wall so I can headbutt it?
But Audi has said that they won't come to F1 unless the engines are composed of four cylinders...
Here's an article I wrote about those news. The original one is in Spanish, this is a Google Translator translation.
http://bit.ly/oKxVBG
Oh dear lord....
Even Dracula himself had none of it (see last comment). :D
Seriously, though, comments like that won't see him win over the fans. As Joe said, they should just get their head down, put reforms in place. If the people like what they see, peace and order will return on its own.
I loved his remark of "...100,000 fans, but in London you wouldn't know it was on.."
Really? Pretty difficult to miss for the most part to be honest.
#rankings
i think Heikki should get some points for trying.. even though not everyone can chat to him cause we're not all his friend. He's chatting to some fans.
https://twitter.com/#!/H_Kovalainen/status/90869710442336256
Indeed. And whatever they're doing is nothing compared to what countries like Singapore or Monaco do. Nothing at all.
Recording a show on a Tuesday is stoopid. I forgot about rankings!
You could do Rankings on Wednesday for a change
On what evidence, pray tell? It might be a bigger deal to its home government, but that's because the British GP is not a government race and quite proud of the fact (yes the BRDC has tried to get the government to invest but they're pretty proud of themselves when they successfully run the event without that help).
I was wondering when they'd get round to doing the annual Kimi rumour...
Because Max was in charge of the FIA, of course! It's a tad difficult to investigate a financial issue at a company if the suspected root of it has the power to cut off your power to investigate at any time. Even if there was genuinely nothing to be afraid of, the investigators may have been reluctant on those grounds. Also, if the money didn't enter the FIA in the lump sum but instead entered in installments/not at all, it would have been difficult to trace the origin of the collective payments, given that Max would have been legally entitled to deny his private financial records to anyone short of the police or national tax inspectorate.
I thought that was due to the European Arrest Warrant, which meant Max had to move out of the EU in case he was charged with something (at least during his tenure as President?) A payoff might have determined the country, but the move had to happen regardless.
You can if you have a friend willing to pick up the tab. All you need then is enough to fund modest expenses plus whatever is needed to satisfy the friend paying for the house/apartment/boat.
Ping for game scores - http://toomuchracing.com/2011/07/12/tmr-game-2011-week-25/
I just realised I haven't said anything despite having the browser here since I got home from work, so, hi..
Max claimed it was due to the European Arrest Warrant but that was bogus. He would still have been subject to it any time he was in the EU.
Sacrilege! :)
Charlie is basically doing the FIA stuff as a paid retirement gig. He previously earned a fair bit of money working for Bernie. If he's invested it sensibly, he wouldn't need a Bernie payout or a generous friend to afford Monaco.
I would be amazed if he earned enough working for Bernie to allow him to retire to Monaco
he was a mechanic wasn't he?
A European Arrest Warrant can't be issued for an investigation, only a criminal proceeding. Max would merely have needed to leave the EU upon hearing a relevant investigation was arising to avoid trouble (on average it takes 43 days for an EAW to be generated for an individual unwilling to give themselves up to the authorities). It would have made it difficult for him to do his job as President, but it wouldn't have been too difficult for him to make the FIA's workings move to Geneva permanently.
Mechanic then engineer
Does the principality have a branch of B&Q?
:D
He was chief engineer for 4 years and chief mechanic for most of the previous 6.
That was in the early 80s though wasn't it? Didn't earn anything like they do now.
so how many million do you need to get into monaco, and has any engineer ever been paid enough in 10 years to do that?
I typed "Monaco" into B&Q's store finder and the nearest branches are all in Wales; 3 of them near Swansea...
I doubt it. I would be surprised if Rob made that kind of money and Ferrari pay a lot more than Bernie ever did
That's strange, I would have thought one of the south coast towns would be closest.
You need enough for a house, apartment or boat. You can rent them from a friend, in which case it's whatever the agreed rent is. Otherwise a small apartment can be as little as £134,000 - less than the price of a typical house where I live.
Same here...
That's to purchase, by the way.
eh? how come hamilton's on a waiting list then? isn't there a minimum bank balance requirement too?
By Monagasque law you also need a minimum number of millions in the bank, last I checked (2005) it was 3 million euro although I may be off a bit.
(unless you are actually Monagasque)
ah-ha. that's sounds about right.
There is a minimum bank balance, but it's only enough to meet reasonable expenses. The other problem is that 2 current residents must give character references.
Hamilton may be on a waiting list if he wants something pricey - the bigger/more ostentatious you want your house to be, the more problems you will have in getting in. And if you want your residence to be a boat, getting a berth may well be even more difficult.
Hamilton is on a waiting list? I had no idea
looking to move from wherever he currently is due to changing tax laws.
are you sure. pat's comment sounds more like what i recall.
Bearing in mind in 2005 I worked for a company selling Grand Prix holidays and part of my job was to research facts about Monaco
3 million Euros was 2 million pounds when the Euro was introduced (it's now quite a lot more than that). It's not clear when Charlie moved to Monaco.
Switzerland. And yes, they're considering making racing drivers pay tax like most other professions (they're currently exempt due to the ban on racing in Switzerland).
I'm sure - though given what sort of prices Monaco charges, my comments and Pat's may be quite compatible. The apartment appears to be the cheap part of being in Monaco...
Finally.
I'm home, unpacked, showered, and I still feel like I'm in a plane, van, tube or train. But I'm on my couch.
Last name change for a while.
Yes and the financial world has changed greatly since I last checked
Home sweet home..?
no, you don't understand. i'm saying you need that much money in your bank. just sitting there.
You will be relaxed by the weekend
and i'm pointing out that a mechanic wouldn't have that. normally.
Home sweltering home. It's like a sauna out there. Heat index of 98F / 36.7C
You need the house and the character references. I don't see how the jobs Charlie has done is incompatible with having 2 million pounds in the bank. With careful saving and investment, a lot is possible. Remember he's been an engineer and a paid FIA official as well as a mechanic, so Charlie's situation is already not normal.
Ouch!
One night's sleep and it resets itself and I can lose that swaying feeling.
pat said:
By Monagasque law you also need a minimum number of millions in the bank
and i think he's correct. or at least more correct than your assumptions. anyhow, nonsensical discussion.
Yikes.
There's definitely a minimum amount and it has to go into an account in one of their banks. The amount might well be different these days after with all the hoo-haa about tax havens, which is where we came in with Hamilton having to move. But I'm sure they still check.
Pat said 3 million Euros, which at 2002 rates was 2 million pounds (of course this assumes Charlie moved then - there's no indication on anything I've seen of when exactly he decided to move to Monaco). That's not an assumption.
But if saying reasonable stuff is "nonsensical discussions"...
none of us know. therefore we've gone as far as we can. i can't be arsed to prove anyone wrong, i don't think it's normal that an engineer of an f1 team lives in monaco.
Evening all (again)
And we know Charlie wasn't in a normal situation in the first place. I'm disappointed that the assumptions you've decided to impose on the situation are barring any rational analysis of what may or may not have happened.
Goodnight.
According to the website I've just read, you don't need millions in the bank to become a resident of Monaco, just to fill out the forms required. One piece of evidence is proof of ownership of a property or a rental agreement. There's nothing about depositing cash anywhere.
it's not really rational as we don't have any facts?
If we're talking about irrational stuff, here's a rankings ping: http://sidepodcast.com/post/being-late-gets-quite-a-lot-of-points-on-christines-rankings-this-week
I actually wasn't going to look it up but now I have:
If you want to be a resident of Monaco, you must live in Monaco for 6 months out of the year. In addition, you must deposit at least 400K Euros into a Monaco bank. In addition, you will need a property deed. Before you pack your bags, you should know that the lowest prices for property range at about 400K euros. For all intent and purposes, in order to legally reside in Monaco, you will usually need to be a millionaire. - http://www.expatintel.com/expat-monaco.shtml
Although that website thinks the article was posted in the year 4749...
Coool!
he didn't move there this week though? did he?
I would have thought about 4 years ago. It was before Max's hobby became public
fair enough, i kinda wish i never brought it up.
How about the actual website of the Monaco government, in English too:

So it looks like you need one of several pieces of paper to prove that you have the means to live in the principality, one accepted form is from a bank. Opening a bank account requires the ~€400k deposit.
It does look like you can go and live there provided you have a job in the principality without opening a bank account.

Sidepodspace - last spacewalk of the shuttle era: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-14121532
Does that mean no one else can do spacewalks or are they just trying to make a big deal out of it being the last of everything?
That's what I meant
There will be spacewalks, but this is the last to involve the shuttle. They were putting the broken ammonia pump into the loading bay so that engineers can take it apart on the ground to figure out what is wrong with it.
They can still do spacewalks. They regularly do spacewalks from both the American and Russian sections of the ISS when the shuttle is not there.
Ah, okay. Not really news then.
Not news at all.
