It is that day of the week again, but we'll pretend it isn't and maybe it'll be a good day anyway. Apparently it is also International Lefthanders Day, in which we celebrate those who use their left hands and recognise the inconveniences of a dominant right-handed world. According to Wikipedia anyway. Here's what we're talking about:

  • F1 Wolf has a great post pondering the future shape of the grid, with a rundown of which teams might be running which drivers in 2010. It is such a relief to be thinking of things like this, rather than whether F1 has a future at all. My favourite Wolf predictions are the Campos and Manor ones.
  • Maverick has written another graph-laden post on the Pitlane Fanatic blog. You know we like our graphs. This time he's reviewing the team's progress so far this year, with part one completed and part two coming soon. (I hope!)
  • Today seems like a good day to plug the Music Initiation page on the wiki. It came up in conversation yesterday, with a few people saying they'd missed out on the fun of sharing the first album and the first single they ever bought. Tell us yours, the more embarrassing the better!

That'll do for now. No one mention that it's that day of the week, and we'll all get along fine. Roll on Friday, I say. I'll see you in the comments.

    International Left Handers Day Y'say?

Famous left hander is Ned Flanders

  • Scott Woodwiss12/08/2009 at 23:45

There's a song off their first album called Stall Out which makes me think immeadietly of motorsport. Why? First lyric is "Racing...". :D

Which is then quickly followed up by "...on a fault line". This I don't get. Who races on an area that's susceptible to earthquakes? ;)

okay. i'm trying to work out how popular it is for my own curiosity really. i got an email on flickr today saying they would like one of my photos to be included in the final selection phase for one of their locations, or something along those lines and they were asking me to give permission to include it etc.

You need to keep a list of anyone who asks to use your photos and urls etc of where they are used. That could be really useful if you do decide to do photography professionally.

You need to set it up like a database table so that if anyone asks what photos you have sold or had used you just print it off. That way they get a professional looking presentation from you.

You should also have a column for your own information that says where people saw yourphotos.

No. I have managed several Earth orbits including hitting both stations but not the moon one. And round about 7.7 thrust and -5 degrees gives the weirdest route possible to the moon.

Morning everyone... Catching up from the overnight themes.

It was me at another play last night

    and

I have 684 unlistened to podcasts... And 30 days, 7 hours of podcasts. Which means of the ones posted so far I think I have the most podcasts, but not the most unlistened to.

It would appear that I also have 33 days of music in my library as well!!!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/08/2009 at 07:52

I don't know how many unlistened ones I have because I mark them as 'Not New' so they don't get synced to my iTouch. Seeing as I have about 40 on it and I have quite a few on the PC, it must be close to about 100 unlistened...

There are some I listen to regularly, some I save for a rainy day and some that I probably never will...

As for my news feed reader, if I don't check it every 5 minutes, I get 500+ unread items per day :(

Have you finished being all cultured now or are there more plays on the horizon?

  • Alex Andronov13/08/2009 at 09:02

Have you finished being all cultured now or are there more plays on the horizon?

    There are two more booked.

Last night's was The Cherry Orchard which was so-so. It did have Simon Russell Beale in it who I could watch reading the phone book - he was faultless as normal. But I wasn't sure about Sam Mendes direction.

Next week we're of to see the Per Kirkeby exhibition at tate modern.

Then we see Arcadia at the Duke of York and Othello with Lenny Henry in it.

Also I'm seeing Drugstore at their comeback gig.

Going to to the Comedy Store.

    A food festival.

And the Stirling Moss interviewed by Murray Walker evening.

That's the culture to the end of September :)

Also I'm meeting Nick and Bassano - but I'm not sure they would like me to call that cultured ;)

  • Christine13/08/2009 at 09:07

That's the culture to the end of September :)

    Don't forget Sidepodradio as well.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/08/2009 at 09:09

Then we see Arcadia at the Duke of York and Othello with Lenny Henry in it.

I'd love to see how he does in a play!

And the Stirling Moss interviewed by Murray Walker evening.

That will be worth every penny (yes I know it costs a lot of pennies!)

  • Alex Andronov13/08/2009 at 09:09

    Don't forget Sidepodradio as well.

    Oh yes! It's all go!

  • Christine13/08/2009 at 09:13

Then we see Arcadia at the Duke of York and Othello with Lenny Henry in it.

I don't think I've seen a real life play with famous actors in it.

I have always only seen musicals.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/08/2009 at 09:16

The last time I saw a play it was a very bad experience involving a date and unexpected nudity on stage (which was made worse by the 'stage' being an initimate setting and the actor right in front of us... :(

Yes, well I am mad of course. I go to a lot of theatre, but I haven't seen that many musicals live (10? 20?).

I go to around 15 plays a year. And have been since around 1996. So it soon adds up.

Can't think who the most famous person I've seen in a play is?

Um, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellan, Kevin Spacey, William H Macy, Kristin Scott Thomas, Michael Gambon, Jeff Goldblum, Zoe Wannamaker, um... Josie Laurence... It's hard trying to remember in abstract like this!

    Good morning

  • Alex Andronov13/08/2009 at 09:22

Oh I saw David Suchet and Richard Drayfuss in a play a couple of months ago and I forgot them. So I've definitely forgotten people.

  • Christine13/08/2009 at 09:22

Yes, well I am mad of course. I go to a lot of theatre, but I haven't seen that many musicals live (10? 20?).

That's still quite a lot! That's probably as many as I've seen, if you don't count dodgy am-dram that I was both in and watched as a youngster.

I go to around 15 plays a year. And have been since around 1996. So it soon adds up.

I am impressed. Do you go to things you know you'll like or do you try anything? The only one I heard of that I thought I might like to see was the one with Stacey from Gavin & Stacey in a while back.

That's true. My sister got an Italian name. When I asked the olds why I didn't, they said "Oh we didn't want to give you a name that sounded funny". Yet they chose Gavin :(

Which play was that? I think I saw it.

A friend of mine is a theatre director and runs a university class in the states where she brings people across to the UK and they watch 7 plays in 7 days. You get a group buying discount and so I have been going to all of those since it started back in 1996.

And because I don't get to choose the plays during that week that tends to mean that I get a good cross section of things I know.

I'm willing to try most things though. But yeah there is usually something that attracts me. Last night it could have been Simon Russell Beale, that I like The Cherry Orchard (maybe the third time I've seen it), it was directed by Sam Mendes or that it was a new adaptation by Tom Stoppard.

The one on Monday just sounded like an interesting idea for a play.

  • Maverick13/08/2009 at 09:31

That sounds like what happened when I went to the Roskilde Festival - I went see one band but also saw loads of other random ones which were cool!

  • Alex Andronov13/08/2009 at 09:33

And because I don't get to choose the plays during that week that tends to mean that I get a good cross section of things I know.

    *don't know

Basically I'm less adventurous in the rest of the year because somebody else chooses for me for about half of my plays for the year. And that brings in the new out there stuff

  • Alex Andronov13/08/2009 at 09:35

You saw Equus? Was it good?

  • Alex Andronov13/08/2009 at 09:45

You saw Equus? Was it good?

It was... But it was quite tricky to judge because it was the second week of the run. Richard Griffiths had gone down with the 'flu right at the beginning of the run and the understudy had had to be drafted in for opening night no less! He apparently had been on stage with the script still in his hand and so on.

The night I saw it was the first night Richard was back (or I suppose in it at all), which was a bit of an adjustment for everyone. And he still had quite a sound of strong cold in his voice.

But I could see that it was going to be excellent. I think they were a bit off balance that night though.

Well, the moment Schumi called it off, I did wonder if there would be refunds. Thing is - if they open the refund door, will there be many others asking for a refund - especially if Alonso can't race?

I will share an opinon on this piece.

I called my cousin in England on Tuesday night (the day before Mr. S pulled out) to tell him I couldn't join them on their trip to the Italian GP. My cousin (who you may recall is in a family of very one-eyed Ferrari and Schumacher fans who only watch F1 to see Ferrari win and nothing else matters) told me they weren't sure about going and only decided to go because Schumacher was racing.

    Oops. :(

    Uh-oh. That's a recipe for trouble.

Are there legal grounds for them or for any other aggrieved fan to sue FOM for a refund?

  • Alex Andronov13/08/2009 at 09:49

Are there legal grounds for them for them or for any other aggrieved fan to sue FOM for a refund?

No chance. Most advertising for events would have a terms and conditions saying under what circomstances you'd get a refund. My guess is with Bernie it would only be if the event was cancelled ahead of the day.

  • Alex Andronov13/08/2009 at 09:51

From memory there was no official refund from Indy when only 6 cars raced. However from memory Michelin decided to refund people for PR reasons.

  • Journeyer13/08/2009 at 09:51

I don’t think there should be refunds at all to be honest.

Why not? There are a lot of people who watch F1 solely for Schumi, who wouldn't have bought if he wasn't gonna race.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/08/2009 at 09:52

When I went to the local speedway track they used to say that once 5 races (usually out of 20-30) had been run you couldn't get a refund.

Michelin did it for USGP 2005 though didn't they? I think Ferrari should show some sort of gesture to the fans, bur of course they are not obliged to...

A lot of people will feel cheated, though, that they ended up buying F1 tickets to watch someone who won't end up racing after all. Not only are Valencia F1 tickets expensive (more expensive than average, I'd guess), but they also host a boring race.

  • Maverick13/08/2009 at 09:53

I'm rather impressed by autosport's ability to turn two tweets into an entire article:

Don't see how it affects the race, why should an event be refunded because of one man? Sure it's Michael Schumacher but no one man is bigger than an entire race no matter his reputation, history or whatever. It's still a race. It'll still have 18/20 cars depending on Renault, and I can't see why Schumacher pulling out would deserve people getting money back.

Perhaps it's my own stubbornness of Schumacher making me think this.

  • Alex Andronov13/08/2009 at 09:55

But you could also make the same case for Alonso fans, should he end up not racing. They spend a lot of money because their home hero is there. If he's not, they're not interested anymore. They may seem narrow-minded like that, but there are a lot of people like that.

Before I bought my tickets I read all 6 pages of this but apparently its "not normal" to read the terms and conditions of everything.

I imagine the European GP had something similar and thus, I'd say no refund mainly due to point 2:

Subject to condition 3 below, Tickets will not be refunded under any circumstances, including but not limited to, the possible non-appearance of any particular person, group or personality (including any performers or bands) expected by the Ticket holder, whether expected to enter an event or not and whether advertised or not, or in the event of any variation to the programs, other conveniences and attractions

    No, just a shame it's a bit one-way at the moment ;-)

"The only good thing the team takes out of him is his good relationship with Bernie and the FIA. Other than that, he doesn't know what is going on. It's like listening to something my sister would say about the car. Pat Symonds is the guy who really understands what is going on with the team."

  • Pat W13/08/2009 at 10:03

should add I'm talking about grandstand tickets.

More expensive stuff should carry higher 'penalties' for late cancellation. I speak from experience.

  • Dank13/08/2009 at 10:03

Piquet is laying into Flav again in this week's Autosport:

"He didn't understand what is going on. If you listen to the pitwall radio, it's like a joke. Sometimes he asks if a driver has slick or wet tyre when it is obvious.

It's like listening to something my sister would say about the car."

The Brazilian also claims that more F1 drivers should speak their mind. Er, well, it's kinda easier to do so when you're unemployed isn't it Piquet?

  • Lukeh13/08/2009 at 10:03

April's event at Sepang had to be abandoned before half distance after it was a hit by a major rain shower, and could not get restarted before dark.

Maths fail from autosport's part :D

    yikes!

I don't think there should be refunds at all to be honest.

i agree. next people will be wanting silverstone refunds because vettel won, not button.

Is that not different though on account of Button being in the race and Schumi won't be?

  • Alex Andronov13/08/2009 at 11:07

Totally awesome mediafuturechange video sadly an hour long: http://blog.businessofsoftware.org/2009/07/seth-godins-talk-from-business-of-software-2008.html

  • me13/08/2009 at 11:07

Is that not different though on account of Button being in the race and Schumi won't be?

fans are not happy he didn't win. if fans are not happy, they deserve refunds, right?

i don't see the difference. you buy a ticket to a race. you don't buy a ticket to watch a driver.

  • Amy13/08/2009 at 11:09

i don't see the difference. you buy a ticket to a race. you don't buy a ticket to watch a driver.

their terms aren't 6 pages like Australia, but still

Item 1: No refunds or exchanges are available in respect of tickets unless the event is cancelled.

You buy a ticket, you agree to the terms. Tough.

What about Massa fans in Hungary with 3-day tickets? They don't get a refund because he didn't race.

  • Alex Andronov13/08/2009 at 11:10

    Autosport are stupid!

Mr C, I think you should write a letter to the editor!

  • Amy13/08/2009 at 11:11

    Sounds fair to me.

exactly. All day at work I deal with people complaining that our company is "being mean" when we're just sticking to the terms they agree to when they sign their contract. It drives me nuts. If you don't read it, its your problem.

  • me13/08/2009 at 11:12

But we are talking about the non-appearance of a driver, not an underperformance. People are asking if refunds are due if Alonso and the certain German CANNOT race...

  • RG13/08/2009 at 11:16

    Gooood morning. Afternoon, whatever.

    not to mention piquet's fan...

If only they had "Tickets will not be refunded under any circumstances, including but not limited to, the possible non-appearance of any particular person, group or personality". Australia = smarter than Europe ;)

  • me13/08/2009 at 11:17

But we are talking about the non-appearance of a driver, not an underperformance. People are asking if refunds are due if Alonso and the certain German CANNOT race...

makes no difference. i understand the argument. but it's nonsense.

schumi said from the off he may not be fit enough to come back.

it's their own stupid fault for not paying attention. sorry, no sympathy here, giving refunds is a ridiculous idea.

but they didn't reply to my last complaint? didn't even acknowledge it, and pulled the same trick a week later.

  • Christine13/08/2009 at 11:19

But we are talking about the non-appearance of a driver, not an underperformance. People are asking if refunds are due if Alonso and the certain German CANNOT race...

i shall have a read. however, i should say grammatical errors annoy christine, but not me. partly because i'm not smart enough to spot them.

my only objection is the insistence on plugging the paper mag, when the stories can easily be posted online. i don't care if they charge me more money, just please stop the:

Don't agree. It takes no more than 60 seconds to read a normal news article. 60 seconds to make sure it is correct before hitting 'submit' and off it goes. Spelling mistakes, inaccuracies unfortunately shows a lack of effort and reflect badly in my opinion.

I guess i see it diferently.

News should be produced as quickly as possible, if there is a letter out of place and i can still understad what it says then thats not a problem.

Editorials should be proof read and stories should be checked after publication, but when you start slowing the process down people will just go elsewhere where the news comes out quiker

I'm not sure I agree with that, but if you're chatting on a forum for the company you work for, chances are you are representing them.

  • Nick13/08/2009 at 11:47

Well from what i have heard this week, Tesco have some very strange opinions on Wayne Rooney!

I will be very surprised if they are not forced into making a formal apology come to think of it.

  • Journeyer13/08/2009 at 11:48

Won’t they always be able to argue that they sold tickets to the European Grand Prix not the Alonso Grand Prix?

Well, the cynic in me would say that the European Grand Prix is in Valencia precisely because of Alonso, but I guess that wouldn't be admissible in court. :D

  • Nick13/08/2009 at 11:48

fortunes are also made and lost on integrity too...

Lost Integrity can be regained, time is lost forever :P

  • Dank13/08/2009 at 11:49

so long as the facts are correct, i’m with you.

anything rather than wait for the printing press to fire up and the colourists to check the pantone levels are all correct.

In priority terms, I agree that ensuring an article is factually correct over spelling and grammatical errors is probably most important.

Unfortunately, inaccuracies are emerging on Autosport.com all too frequently recently as well.

I'm not sure I agree with that, but if you're chatting on a forum for the company you work for, chances are you are representing them.

I'll clarify. When you enter some kind of conversation during working hours, you are speaking as a mouthpiece of the company - regardless if someone says you are not.

Well from what i have heard this week, Tesco have some very strange opinions on Wayne Rooney!

In this example, you overheard someone at Tesco say something about Rooney? Whilst not the opinion of Tesco's, you are still speaking as an employee...

  • Journeyer13/08/2009 at 11:51

Agreed, some things aren’t pulled up by spell check and for those things it’s fair enough, i’d rather the article get out, but for the words that have red lines underneath when you click send…they should be sorted out

Why not compromise? Have an initial first version up right away. Once that's up, proofread it and then replace the original version with the revised one. The original version would be up for no more than 5-10 minutes.

  • Nick13/08/2009 at 11:51

Assuming the facts to be published are correct, of course.

  • Stuart C13/08/2009 at 11:52

It takes no more than 60 seconds to read a normal news article. 60 seconds to make sure it is correct before hitting ’submit’ and off it goes. Spelling mistakes, inaccuracies unfortunately shows a lack of effort and reflect badly in my opinion.

Yes and no. I've committed my share of howlers to print, despite being well enough regarded to find continuous employment here and there. When you work in a deadline environment for any length of time it is almost inevitable that occasionally something will waltz in under your radar. Most galling of all is that these whoopsies are usually blindingly obvious to the next person to read it (and, worst of all, to yourself when you pick up the damned thing after it's gone to press).

It's the nature of the business that your good work goes un-noticed while your errors are there for all to see. You can execute a scrupulous rewrite of a careless author, banishing their illiteracies and anfactualisms, and still end up looking a total chump because of a transposed consonant.

Print titles still have a wider safety net. For instance, the article I'm about to resume examining after lunch has been written by a careful author and will be seen by at least two people after me before it appears on the news stands. Websites tend to have fewer staff, because on-line revenues are still on the low side, and the audience is considerably more impatient and fickle. With that in mind, I'm inclined to forgive occasional on-line bloopers.

I think it wholey depends on the story...if its a story that is breaking news that needs to be out asap, i.e piquet's statement or schumacher coming back into f1 then i would compromise....other things less important...i.e "Force India promises more from 2009" then it should be checked properly before sending out

  • Journeyer13/08/2009 at 11:53

The idea of Ross Brawn being able to drive that fast or the error? ;)

  • Stuart C13/08/2009 at 11:59

One more thing before I pop off for comestibles: since MBW is being published by an American company, the manuscript has been rendered into American. So be prepared for some missing 'u's and extra 'z's, and please don't pillory me on-line when you read the word 'burglarized'!

They have made phones for quite a while but in this country they are new as they have always been rebranded as being made by the networks.

They are from taiwan and probably the best PDA-phone makers until apple joined the party.

He makes an interesting point that PKsnr knows exactly where to hit flav the hardest, and could be trying to get him sacked.

I hope thats the case. The irony of renault being sold on to PK at some point in the future without flav would make me chuckle for a week or 3.

News should be produced as quickly as possible, if there is a letter out of place and i can still understad what it says then thats not a problem.

One letter now and then is perfectly fine - until it happens regularly. That's just sloppy for a professional writer.

Editorials should be proof read and stories should be checked after publication, but when you start slowing the process down people will just go elsewhere where the news comes out quiker

Stories should ALWAYS be checked BEFORE publication or we'll end up with retraction after retraction.

On the web being first with a story is irrelevant, everyone else will have their version up within the hour anyway. I'd much rather be second but right. There's a reason why when a rumour appears elsewhere, a lot of people wait until it appears on Autosport until they believe it, and that's a powerful place for them to be.

I cant see them retracting a story because they wrote their instead of there. Wasting hour upon hour debating whether or not the apostrophe goes before the s or after it is not helpful to anyone. I dont see any problem with checking the facts, publishing and then going over all the little nuances.

  • Amy13/08/2009 at 12:43

I wasn't talking about retracting for a spelling mistake, but for fact-checking. Whoever I quoted (can't remember) was saying (unless I misread it) stories should be fact-checked after publication, which is where a certain 3-letter agency comes in.

My point was as long as the facts are all there and correct, it is better to publish it is fit is a breaking news story. fix the spelling and punctuation afterwards. But non time sensitive editorial pieces should go out properly checked...

What did he do? he has come across well in all the interviews i have seen with him...

    The post-sacking interviews?

I think PK is one of hte only driver where the phrase "let hte results do hte talking" dosent apply

  • Lukeh13/08/2009 at 13:07

I dont understand the PK hate... he is a nice guy and he got f1 on twitter.

I think in the several interviews I've read, or seen, him in he has moaned, moaned and moaned. twitter he has been good for.

What did he do? he has come across well in all the interviews i have seen with him...

he shoulder barged a group I was standing with that five other drivers managed to walk around rather than push their way through the middle. That did it for me ;)

  • Christine13/08/2009 at 13:08

What did he do? he has come across well in all the interviews i have seen with him...

Before he arrived, he was really cocky and arrogant, then he was put in his place and I felt a bit sorry for him. Not particularly impressed with how he's handling himself now, although I'm glad Flav is getting a kicking.

  • Lukeh13/08/2009 at 13:08

Have you ever read his interview in F1 Racing from the beginning of the year? Even then before the season started he seemed completely miserable at everything concerning F1.

I think in the several interviews I've read, or seen, him in he has moaned, moaned and moaned. twitter he has been good for.

best interview he ever did was on the renault podcast with holly before his renault drive was even confirmed. he "knew" he had the drive before kovi was let go (which lends weight to to the piquet snr. theory).

he came across as the most stuck-up, arrogant, spoilt, egotistical and clueless driver ever to speak into a microphone.

  • Amy13/08/2009 at 13:11

ahh but four of the other five also walked over to where the fans were to sign autographs. Not so much for Piquet (and Alonso to be fair)

apparently we didn't comment on the piquet podcast interview at the time, but we did talk about it in the show. from the transcript:

Okay, well, it’s just I was listening to the Renault podcast, at the beginning of this week. And this week there was an interview Nelson Piquet Jr, and the show’s anchored by the lovely Ms Holly Samos.

She asked him an interesting question that I’d just pass on to all the listeners, because it’s such a good question. And this isn’t a criticism of Holly, just want to say that, because Brendan will come round and kneecap us, if we say anything badabout her. We love her to pieces, she’s wonderful, but the question she put to Nelson, and I put this to everybody listening, is:

"Are you a happy person, or are you one of those that thinks a lot?"

They are mutually exclusive. Happy people, those that think a lot.

apparently i wasn't that bothered by piquet's comments at the time then. did i mention how much i (hearts) new sidepodserach?

  • Lukeh13/08/2009 at 13:26

  • Lukeh13/08/2009 at 14:03

    afternoon :)

    afternoon :D

    how was your driving today?

  • Christine13/08/2009 at 14:03

But they are sweet... wouldnt you like one as a pet if MrC wouldnt let you have a giant one?

No!! What would I want with a Panda imposter?

  • Nick13/08/2009 at 14:03

    Okay don't blink now.

I blinked... my eyes are sick though so i think this experiment is void :P

  • Lukeh13/08/2009 at 14:04

But they are sweet... wouldnt you like one as a pet if MrC wouldnt let you have a giant one?

I said to both lou and christine earlier in the week that yes, they are cute but they are not pandas! They are 50% correct!

  • Nick13/08/2009 at 14:05

No!! What would I want with a Panda imposter?

They are amazing though... plus they are small so its like having a baby panda that stays a baby panda! ;)

  • me13/08/2009 at 14:06

I blinked... my eyes are sick though so i think this experiment is void :P

    sheep!

  • lou13/08/2009 at 14:06

    how was your driving today?

it was good thanks. did some bay parking today, and realised that i've done 13 hours now, he says that in another 10hours i should be confident on the roads etc. which means about another 5 lessons before i won't be getting flustered as much, but today went well :D

  • Nick13/08/2009 at 14:06

bet it was someone wanting something.

I have been let off meeting someone. Londodn you are safe... for tonight at least

  • Christine13/08/2009 at 14:06

They are amazing though... plus they are small so its like having a baby panda that stays a baby panda! ;)

But they're nothing like pandas. I might as well get a cat.

  • Alex Andronov13/08/2009 at 14:06

You can't not. You also breathe unconsciously. You also know what the next note is in that series. We also have always communicated by blushing and yawning. Because if you didn't you wouldn't be human. It's only once you start thinking about it that it seems odd.

I mean how ridiculous is it that you can see the word yawn and it might make you yawn.

    Whatever you do don't yawn.

    :)

  • Nick13/08/2009 at 14:07

    sheep!

    gah! where!

  • Alex Andronov13/08/2009 at 14:07

But they're nothing like pandas. I might as well get a cat.

The good thing about a cat is that it would fit the site name better:

    SidePodCat

  • Lukeh13/08/2009 at 14:07

You should see bearded pigs. they don't even have beards!!

    ....they have mustaches.

  • Alex Andronov13/08/2009 at 14:11

I'll stop talking about yawning now ;)

I just wanted Nick to realise that he's mad to fear it. This is what humans do. It's all part of communication.

  • Christine13/08/2009 at 14:11

    or a Sugar Glider

I am pretty sure I would break that.

A tiger and a lemur? These are poor replacements for a panda.

  • Nick13/08/2009 at 14:13

I am pretty sure I would break that.

It runs up the curtains and glides down to you.. tis awesome!

  • Alex Andronov13/08/2009 at 14:13

I have not yawned... tired people yawn, i am trying to find a job!

Actually it isn't to do with being tired. But rather to do with increasing the oxygen into your lungs. Something you may need to do after not moving very much.

  • Nick13/08/2009 at 14:14

Although if Nick doesn't yawn. That probably means he's not Human. And so also a dancer.

Or maybe i am the guy singing the song? :P

I have no real problem with that, there are several major record labels.

I just fear that it is inevitable that 1984 will come true

  • Alex Andronov13/08/2009 at 14:23

I just fear that it is inevitable that 1984 will come true

I hate to break this to you...

    It's 2009 that means 1984 has already happened ;)

Try this on for size. If you take the search results for a search term on google and yahoo and ask people to say which results they prefer then they generally tell you it is google's results.

If you do the same thing, but make the yahoo results appear on the google page and vice - versa. Then people still tell you that the google results are better.

Right, in the room with the notes everyone was together at a conference where Scientists were going to show them cool things that they wanted to learn about. If the guy had gone "bah, bah, bah, shoot the person next to you". I don't think the last bit would have worked very well for him.

  • Christine13/08/2009 at 14:29

    It's 2009 that means 1984 has already happened ;)

Although, don't they say (and I haven't read it so shoot me down) that it could be any year as the powers-that-be keep rewriting history?

  • Amy13/08/2009 at 14:30

  • Amy13/08/2009 at 14:52

my problem is that I don't like it cold but I don't like it hot. The temperature range in which I find drinks acceptable is rather small.

Every time my dad makes me a cup of tea he says "I'll just leave it here for a week until its cold enough, shall I?"

I think they're going to try and have the worlds longest race or something like that, so would need to be 26 hours (i believe) minimum, which is quite insane

I have no idea what the world's longest race was? I know in th very early days of racing they used to have races over a few days but the cars were so unreliable they probably only ran a few hours each day.

It has a open circuit board on the back... And if you touch it while the battery is in you crash the thing. It has a magnet on it and another one you can position elsewhere - which is why I couldn't attach it to the mug because it's too thick. And you have to send it a blast of IR to control it. And it came with no instructions and it uses the COM port which means I don't think it will work with a Mac... But other than for those reasons I can heartily recommend it! ;)

  • Alex Andronov13/08/2009 at 15:48

Have you never heard of a multi-point?

Why would you need one of those cluttering up the place?

  • Jon Waldock13/08/2009 at 15:48

Why would you need one of those cluttering up the place?

To save you having an electrian putting (was it 6?) double plug sockets next to each other? Unless it was like that when you moved in?

  • Alex Andronov13/08/2009 at 15:49

Why would you need one of those cluttering up the place?

I am very annoyed with myself because in the liveness of the video I said "socket" rather than "plug". What was I thinking?

  • Steven Roy13/08/2009 at 15:50

I see no reason not to put it on sale immediately

It was not like that when I moved in.

On that wall there are eight double plugs (four are on the other end of the wall), 2 x telephone and 2 x ethernet. There are 2 more double plugs on the opposite wall in this room, but then this is the computer room.

    And more efficient.

  • Jon Waldock13/08/2009 at 15:55

that must be safer than multi-ports though?

It depends, some have alot of safety bits built in, but if you need that many plugs then it probably is better to have actual sockets

I just was always annoyed when in previous houses I ran out of sockets - and the house needed rewiring.

Behind my TV I have only 3 dual sockets and I knew I should have got more. I now have had to add a splitter! I also got them to wire in the ethernet and the 2xSky cables so that that wire doesn't need to go anywhere.

    hehe, much better...

I think the main takeaway from this afternoon though is... Always keep a magnetically attachable reprogrammable LCD screen with you - at all times!

  • Alex Andronov13/08/2009 at 16:18

It's my friend Nick's birthday today and he told me that he got a personally signed copy of Lewis Hamilton's Autobiography.

Which says Happy Birthday Nic in it. - note the lack of K

Now the story behind this is that Nick was given the book by his girlfriend who's best friend has known Lewis since he was a boy and managed to pull this favour. When the friend received the book from Lewis and passed it to Nick's girlfriend the mistake was discovered.

The friend then challenged Lewis about the spelling who said, sorry, I got confused that's how I spell Nichole's name.

I think I shall take to calling my friend Nick - THAT MAN!

Who on earth rings someone at 2.22am from a private number?

I'm with Mr C. Phones are evil.

  • RG13/08/2009 at 16:23

Embarrasing RG moments: Guy playing for my team on FM scored last minute winner, I jumped up, and ended up forgetting to land properly...

  • Amy13/08/2009 at 16:27

    But people hate voicemails.

I hate odd phone calls in the middle of the night.

I got a few during the day as well but the number came up as a NSW area code and I don't know anyone in NSW so didn't answer those either. :D

I suppose I could have used that as an advert.

I have got a plan for something on Monday night that will go into it.

The most time consuming thing is selecting the music.

I suggested an easy way round that last night. Apparently we have some talented musicians on this site so Lou and some of the others should upload clips of themselves playing music and we can use that.

I am going outside for a while. I have my phone and a map of the stars so I shouldn't get lost by more than about 30 miles. The only problem is Lou is outside as well and when both of us go out at the same time bad stuff happens. I suppose at least this time Schumacher can't come back again.

James Allen has some interesting ideas about drivers reshuffling before the end of the season, so we could see Alonso in a ferrari and Booby K in a Renault before Abu Dhabi which could be interesting.

Will also be very funny if KR decides not to retire just to cause trouble!

    Famous left hander is Ned Flanders {Comment #1}

    Giancarlo Fisichella is also left-handed.

He reckons he will be fine for the first A1GP race. He said he had beaten his best time for the route and was on a public road going home. He said there were roadworks around and thinks he may have clipped a piece of wood. More likely just a slippy surface.

Didn't meet anyone remotely famous except when I was staying in Moscow at the end for a couple of days before we left. We stayed at the Gorbachev hotel and conference centre. It turns out that he actually gave lectures to western businesses there on how to deal with Russia.

There was a basement with shops. I was wandering along minding my own business and rounded a corner to find I had walked straight into Gorbachev and almost knocked him on his backside. I didn't know what to do. I was going to take may hand out my pocket to shake hands with him but he had a monster either side of him with bulging pockets so I just muttered sorry and walked on.

  • Maverick13/08/2009 at 21:49

Also, I know this is probably unmentionable, but did more news surface regarding Max?? The German tabloids had him splashed all over the covers but my German's pretty bad and I can't work out if it's a new incident or just a rehashing of the original.

Tabloids can be very funny when they look for a "stock" photo for an article!

  • Scott Woodwiss13/08/2009 at 21:49

Hehehehe. I remember that soundtrack well.

There's such a great combination of about 3 different music genres in all and yet it all fits together brilliantly.

  • Jon Waldock13/08/2009 at 21:49

Bikes have been causing all sorts of trouble since you left. RG has had problems. Kathi's bike did this http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/00002-jpg to her sister and A1GP driver Neel Jani just broke his elbow.

And my Danish Teacher had an accident which cancelled my lesson...

i crashed into 2 cars on my bike...

  • Scott Woodwiss13/08/2009 at 21:50

How can you favour that soundtrack over RRT4's?! It's simply epic.

  • Lukeh13/08/2009 at 21:51

How can you favour that soundtrack over RRT4's?! It's simply epic.

Because RR4 never had 'Rrrrrrrrrrrrrridge Racer!' ;)

Rage Racer had a fantastic ost too.

He's settled lawsuit with Bild - a good excuse to show the pictures again perhaps?

Because it was very energetic and very awesome

  • Jon Waldock13/08/2009 at 21:52

Totally my fault, but also the cars fault for pulling out then stopping on a clear road when it was his right of way...

  • Lukeh13/08/2009 at 21:55

I remember this now from the fantastic Formula 1 97, used to come on before the races in the championship mode...

    Good times were had. :)

  • Alison13/08/2009 at 21:55

You must both have thighs like Chris Hoy

I feel pretty fit now yeah. It's alright though. Plenty of time for me to get unfit again before I have to do any more exercise....

I'm sorry to hear about all your mishaps :(

And yes it was Bild it was all over, that pretty much explains it. Thanks for sparing me the indignity of looking that up myself....

Again, the original had 100x better music.

Best. Intro. Evarrrr! - Especially when you consider games before were mostly blocky graphics and cheesy beepy music - this was AMAZING!

  • Scott Woodwiss13/08/2009 at 22:02

I'll agree with you on this one. Joe Satriani and Steve Vai FTW!

  • Scott Woodwiss13/08/2009 at 22:03

Although, I do love this intro! Rubbish game itself, but the intro and the music in it is epic!

James May's organising it as well!

    awesome indeed

James May is doing it and it's about a mile longer than the previous record Scalextric circuit. They are supposed to be building the banking out of lego.

They can't build it round the original Brooklands track because some of it is now shops.

    I mean how ridiculous is it that you can see the word yawn and it might make you yawn. {Comment #537}

I was doing the first half of my First Aid Revalidation today and part of it covered yawning. I couldn't stop doing it for a good ten minutes afterwards, much to the amusement of the rest of the class...

  • RG13/08/2009 at 22:30

    Swimming much more safer.

Plus the chance of drowning is less than your bike killing you

  • Alianora La Canta13/08/2009 at 22:31

Parenthetically, I'd become a bit of a standing joke in the class before that happened. When I did the original course three years ago, the instructor told me to read through the book every month to keep everything fresh in my brain. This I duly did.

The trouble was that the other three people in my class hadn't looked at their training materials for three years, meaning I ended up getting most of the questions because they needed to be reminded of everything all over again. Which I did... ...with answers that were somewhat long and occasionally quite precise (because I'd memorised them from the book). I've therefore ended up with the nickname "Dictionary Corner" and a reminder about every three questions to let someone else have a go at answering questions, however often this resulted in long silences followed with "Er... ...dunno".

It was quite a strange way to spend the day, especially as the practical side had a few changes. The main one being that we are now apparently meant to time our chest compressions in CPR to "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" and "Nellie the Elephant". Which is fine (if rather strange), but I can't sing and do CPR simultaneously. After several disasterous attempts, I'm going back to the time-honoured method of simply counting the compressions...

Was seen a couple of days ago. Most assume MSFT will appeal etc.

They actually have a narower patent on XML, granted after the one in question, so the whole affair is still up in the air.

Doing two different sorts of exercises is healthier than one because you work different muscles different ways. However, I'd recommend getting used to the swimming before introducing cycling into the equation.

Water is about 80% ocygen so should be better for you than air.
