Yesterday was a good day in Sidepodcast Towers, and whilst I would usually be dreading the appearance of Thursday tomorrow, instead I am still happy about the great Tuesday we had yesterday. Let's see how long this lasts. Here are some of the things we're talking about:

  • Schumacher has admitted he is not fit to race in Valencia, with recurring problems in his neck. Ferrari immediately confirmed that Badoer would get the nod for the drive, which leaves the entire F1 community going: why? So far, no one seems to have a reason why they would choose Badoer over Gene, and whilst we don't have anything against Badoer, it seems an odd move.
  • Ferrari boss Luca di Montezemolo couldn't let things lie with the above news and decided now was a good time to suggest that next year they might want to run three cars. This seems so unlikely to happen but if anyone can make it so, I guess Ferrari can.
  • Finally, it is not F1 news, but Franck news! He'll be racing in the IRL series later this month. Yay! That is all.

Midway through the week, you must be up to something exciting by now? Let us know either way, we want to hear from you. I'll see you in the comments.

I was shocked as well. I still maintain that telling Lou not to come to Australia is bad advice since I have seen no spiders in 14 months, yet she has seen a million in a week.

Right, 45 minutes into london then 46 minutes (apparently) on the underground, then a 22 minute walk. Woop woop. How exciting....or not...

The pinnacle of motorsport - 20 years behind the times. Perfect.

Come to think of it, is any sport excelling right now? Almost all the sports I see seem to be struggling with one thing or another. If not cheating, then steroids. If not that, then cashflow.

  • Journeyer12/08/2009 at 09:28

As most sport gets its income from sponsorship, I can imagine a recession is hard to navigate. But its really just a case of cutting back and weathering the storm, rather than regressing twenty years, surely?

I certainly don't want to go back to 80s fashion just cos money is tight :)

  • Journeyer12/08/2009 at 09:32

that is exactly the message I am trying to pass to one of my clients, although I am talking about less than 20 years set back. you will not believe how extreme some people (who looked rather normal as recently as 8 months ago) can get these days :-)

It's very hard to find. But the first paragraph states that he's the official test and reserve driver. No mention of Gene.

Why is it that leisure centre cafés are never open when people want to use them? I can never use mine because it shuts too early and given the timestamp on Paul's comment, I wouldn't be surprised if his centre's café opens too late...

  • Alianora La Canta12/08/2009 at 10:15

    Three cars will never happen, it will only cause more problems in my opinion. {Comment #55}

Three cars was in the old Concorde Agreement, but only if the total number of cars under the two-car-per-team system dropped below 20 (for some reason, temporary dips below that number aren't counted). This condition is unlikely to trigger any time in the foreseeable future.

    oooh. less, i'd imagine.

  • Journeyer12/08/2009 at 10:37

TWO huge revelations from Prost in this AUTOSPORT article:

"In 1994 McLaren asked me to take the wheel. I conducted three days of testing and I immediately realised that something was broken. The speed was there, but not the will to manage the pressure, travel and media that comes with a championship contest.

"A year later, Jean Todt suggested that I become team-mate to Schumacher to help him become champion at Ferrari. I would have been clearly number two, which was ok - I almost drove, but finally I did not, for the same reasons."

yup. 1 in 03, 1 in 05, 1 in 06. the only time he had a competitive car was as alonso's teammate.

    Morning all,

Strange, what with all this talk of the 80s going on, that this morning my iTunes randomiser has ceased its explorations of Muse's back catalogue and is mad for the Pet Shop Boys.

    I’d rather be unfashionable.

Oh come on – what's not to love?

    cantu, crypton, scuderia italia chesterfield.

    they’re all made up words {Comment #105}

    Chesterfield's not a made-up word - I live there!

Though the lack of a Scuderia Italia in town does make me rather suspicious of the existence of the organisation...

  • Journeyer12/08/2009 at 10:44

    look at those leggings!

I LOVE this song. Thanks, Stuart. :)

Welcome to the wonderful world of the lower formulae.

    cantu, crypton, scuderia italia chesterfield.

they're all made up words :)

Scuderia Italia Chesterfield ran Lolas in 1993. They were so bad that they often only had one car qualify in last place (while the other filled the only DNQ slot!)

  • Alianora La Canta12/08/2009 at 10:51

“he will at least fulfil his ambition of racing for Ferrari”

    fisi must be livid right now… {Comment #109}

Probably not. If he wasn't livid back in 2004 when he was promised a Ferrari test that was assumed at the time to be part of a path to a full-time Ferrari race seat and it got given to his team-mate, then losing a substitution place that his contract with Force India would probably have blocked anyway isn't going to cause much frustration.

You're right that he won't be happy though.

  • Alianora La Canta12/08/2009 at 10:55

    Isn’t Chesterfield there referring to a brand rather than a town? {Comment #134}

Most likely. If I remember correctly, the brand was named after a town, but which one is hard to say as there are multiple Chesterfields in North America as well as the one in England.

  • Stuart C12/08/2009 at 10:55

And what is she doing with music?

Well indeed. Just because Sinatra made a career out of sounding flat and off-key doesn't mean everyone else ought to aspire to it. Bah! I'm going to go and cuddle a Human League album, or something.

Ahhh. When you sweat on your back and you don't wipe it off right away and you just let it dry, it usually contributes to sickness.

Very easily. I took the ex's dad once to one of their concerts.. OMG I believe the youngest patron was at least 20 years older then me

I respect what Quo did but playing the same three chords for 30 years just doesn't do it for me! To many Argos adverts with 'Whatever you Want' has ruined it for me

I was right, it is red, and he just broke the record for the most Indycar wins. What is it with red cars?

I can't remember what my first single was... It may have been from Level 42. But my first album was Jive Bunny and the Mastermixers Megamix cd.

The weird thing is that I hadn't seen that page either - maybe I was on hiatus? ;)

The really odd thing is that I just asked fourstar and his first album was the exact same one as Bassano's (Adam Ant). And his first single was also a comedy record but this time Captain Beaky and his band by Keith Michelle.

  • Alex Andronov12/08/2009 at 13:09

    Some PC netbooks have that...

  • me12/08/2009 at 14:42

    Useless :(

what about swipe left and right?

  • me12/08/2009 at 14:42

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)12/08/2009 at 14:43

    Oo-er missus! ;)

  • Christine12/08/2009 at 14:43

I think Twitter is down again!

    Nothing :(

  • Jarrett in CT12/08/2009 at 14:43

I couldn't live without the two finger scroll.

  • Maverick12/08/2009 at 14:43

Has the fail whale been spotted in the sea of Twitter again?

    Swallowed it whole I think

  • Alex Andronov12/08/2009 at 14:44

    Some PC netbooks have that...

The problem is that it is so much better and more natural that it's very hard to switch back.

  • Alex Andronov12/08/2009 at 14:45

And Ctrl + Up arrow isn't home!

    What's going on?

  • Jarrett in CT12/08/2009 at 14:45

Well, fun checking in on you guys. All this talk about food has me ready for lunch. Time to go get some sushi. Take care all.

  • Nick12/08/2009 at 14:45

I cant use a touch pad, give me a mouse or a joystick anyday!

    (I'm only being cheeky - honest ;)

Maybe it's because you don't use a mac?

  • Amy12/08/2009 at 14:47

Until an hour ago I had no idea there was a Greys Anatomy video game. I am preparing to play it. I am expecting it to be terrible yet I am kind of excited.

  • Nick12/08/2009 at 14:47

you can use a laptop with a joystick?

yup, much easier for me, i find it much more accurate.

  • Maverick12/08/2009 at 14:48

I cant use a touch pad, give me a mouse or a joystick anyday!

I always use a small mouse with a laptop but invariably some berk will have stuck a sticker on the patch of the laptop you can use as a mousepad and it's usually got a hologram on to boot - who knows where the pointer will end up as the laser passes over it?

  • Nick12/08/2009 at 14:48

Maybe it's because you don't use a mac?

Ive used one when the mac store became my free internet cafe in sydney, just didnt suit.

I guess because my first laptop had a joystick i have always prefered that

  • Maverick12/08/2009 at 14:50

you can use a laptop with a joystick?

I haven't seen a laptop with a joystick in years - do they still make them?

I hope so! my netbook had a joystick, it wasnt between the g and h keys which was much better.

the keyboard i bought the other month has one built in aswell

how do you keep track of how far you are from central London?

  • Jon Waldock12/08/2009 at 16:39

Right, i was reading the Times earlier (someone left it on the train and i was bored) and naturally it had a MSC story so i read it...and found this

[Talking about who may do the rest of the Ferrari season to replace Massa if it turns out Badoer is rubbish]..."Giancarlo Fisichello, of Force India, once identified by Ferrari as a star of the future, is also being mentioned after it became known that he would test-drive for the team next year"

Did anyone else know this? I had no idea!

  • Nick12/08/2009 at 16:39

    evening,

Everyone who just got here needs to pick yourself an irl driver for the big race

  • Steven Roy12/08/2009 at 16:39

You are all wrong about north. North begins at Loch Lomond. Middlesborough and Yorkshire is waaaay south

  • Bassano Clapper12/08/2009 at 16:40

    Hey Steven

My timing is superb isn't it?

    Impeccable

  • Nick12/08/2009 at 16:40

how do you keep track of how far you are from central London?

Im by the M25... 1 side is brighter and the other is dark...

  • Bassano Clapper12/08/2009 at 16:40

haven't you been on the naughty step so long you've had a chance to build a naughty chair or am I imagining it? ;)

I was but I sneaked off for shots at the bar with Mr C but he grassed me up ;)

  • Alex Andronov12/08/2009 at 16:40

Is it an oval or a proper track?

  • Steven Roy12/08/2009 at 16:42

Did anyone else know this? I had no idea!

News to me. It is quite a few years ago that he was last mentioned in connection with Ferrari and I assumed that was just because he was Italian.

I find it odd that they are giving Badoer a drive now when they didn't 10 years ago in his second season with the team

  • Scott Woodwiss12/08/2009 at 16:42

I had a really hard day at work

I had a customer on the phone who would hardly let me get a word in edgeways and just wouldn't stop talking, followed by one of my colleagues crabbing out at me because I hadn't been able. I ended up leaving 12 minutes later than I should have and only just got the bus back into the city.

  • Jon Waldock12/08/2009 at 16:43

News to me. It is quite a few years ago that he was last mentioned in connection with Ferrari and I assumed that was just because he was Italian.

You'd have thought they'd have mensioned it at some point. I haven't heard anything about it

I think he just likes saying "woman!"

  • Bassano Clapper12/08/2009 at 16:43

    Mr C picked Danica?

    There's a suprise

  • Nick12/08/2009 at 16:44

Proper track... Its in gran turismo if you need to have a go to educate your guess infenion raceway

  • Bassano Clapper12/08/2009 at 16:44

Proper track... Its in gran turismo if you need to have a go to educate your guess infenion raceway

Which version, there are a few on GT4

  • Steven Roy12/08/2009 at 16:45

I think he just likes saying "woman!"

    That figures.

  • Scott Woodwiss12/08/2009 at 16:45

    Crabbing out?

complaining. It's a term we use in the call centre for some who whinges and moans.

  • Jon Waldock12/08/2009 at 16:45

Proper track... Its in gran turismo if you need to have a go to educate your guess infenion raceway

One of the licence tests on GT4 is driving an Audi R8 (the LMP1) around Infiniteon Raceway, its epic, i cant ever finish a lap, its too quick

  • Alex Andronov12/08/2009 at 16:45

I find it odd that they are giving Badoer a drive now when they didn't 10 years ago in his second season with the team

as I've been saying I think that means it was a surprise to them.

Would make sense if Badeor is about to retire.

  • me12/08/2009 at 16:46

I've thought of another new thing for the playground. Your own URL shortening service :)

hehe. thing is, i think bit.ly is backed by the same people who back drop.io.

i'm not writing our own drop.io.

apparently there is a wordpress plugin:

    i hate wordpress ;)

  • Bassano Clapper12/08/2009 at 16:47

complaining. It's a term we use in the call centre for some who whinges and moans.

    Ah ok

I left half an hour late and I should've left bang on time as I had an appointment.

That's on top of the usual half an hour early, every day (which is kind of expected)

  • RG12/08/2009 at 16:47

You are all wrong about north. North begins at Loch Lomond. Middlesborough and Yorkshire is waaaay south

I believe in England, Yorkshire is waaaay south

    Raceway, gotcha

That's the configuration for the IRL is it?

  • RG12/08/2009 at 16:48

    Mr C picked Danica?

I believe I am now choosing drivers based on looks.

  • me12/08/2009 at 16:49

We knew he was bong edged out of Force India though.

fisi has been promised a ferrari drive since he started in f1. it is his dream though.

We dont really know who's racing, you have to do your own homework!

  • Steven Roy12/08/2009 at 16:53

I believe I am now choosing drivers based on looks.

Don't think I have seen Mario Moraes out of the car. I haven't seen much of him in one either. The last time I noticed him he became the latest victim of a stupid move by Marco Andretti and ended in the wall of corner 3 of a several hundred mile race.

  • Bassano Clapper12/08/2009 at 16:53

We dont really know who's racing, you have to do your own homework!

am guessing a meteorite shower corrupted your non-ecc checked ram.

  • Pat W12/08/2009 at 17:14

These should be the drivers for Sonoma. Bear in mind many IndyCar teams chop and change drivers regularly, especially in this economy, because there are a lot of ride-buyers / car-sharers. We'll have a better idea this time next week.

    Helio Castroneves (BR, Penske)

    Ryan Briscoe (AUS, Penske)

Will Power (AUS, Penske) [query, he's a part time 3rd car]

    Scott Dixon (NZ, Ganassi)

    Dario Franchitti (SCO, Ganassi)

    Danica Patrick (USA, Andretti-Green)

    Tony Kanaan (BR, Andretti-Green)

    Marco Andretti (USA, Andretti-Green)

    Hideki Mutoh (JPN, Andretti-Green)

    Franck Montagny (FRA, Andretti-Green)

    Justin Wilson (ENG, Dale Coyne)

    Graham Rahal (USA, Newman/Haas/Lanigan)

Oriol Servia (USA, Newman/Haas/Lanigan) [should still be in]

    Dan Wheldon (ENG, Panther)

    Ryan Hunter-Reay (USA, AJ Foyt)

    Ed Carpenter (USA, Vision)

    Raphael Matos (BR, Luczo Dragon)

    Robert Doornbos (NED, HVM)

    EJ Viso (VEN, HVM)

Mike Conway (ENG, Dreyer & Reinbold)

    Mario Moraes (BR, KVRT)

This isn't a complete list as I don't yet know if Paul Tracy, Tomas Scheckter, Richard Antinucci, Milka Duno and more will have a drive.

We know these are NOT in for this race:

Sarah Fisher (USA, Sarah Fisher) [should be back for the Chicago oval]

    Stanton Barrett (USA, Team 3G)

  • James12/08/2009 at 17:14

Do some drivers only do ovals?

  • Bassano Clapper12/08/2009 at 17:18

Do you guys over the pond really follow Indy?

    Not really

Some, but they are very much in the minority I'd say

Now that Franck is there though...

  • Pat W12/08/2009 at 17:18

Do you guys over the pond really follow Indy?

I try to keep up with it as best I can. There is a core following here but I wouldn't say it was very big.

  • Bassano Clapper12/08/2009 at 17:18

I watched the 500 ansd commented on it here, but i think this race is the first for a lot of us!

A race named after the number of commercials it contained apparently

  • Jarrett in CT12/08/2009 at 17:20

The 500 is totally different. It's a thing all it's own. I only watch Indy in the same way I watch golf, that is to say if I am looking for a good nap. I miss CART.

  • Jarrett in CT12/08/2009 at 17:20

The best 500 races are always offroad. Gimme some Baja!

  • Pat W12/08/2009 at 17:21

Do some drivers only do ovals?

Yes, either for financial reasons or because they are better at ovals than road courses. Or in Sarah's case, both. This year she is running her own team and cherry picking the races she knows she can do well at. This means her teams is presented very well and looks professional because she's not spreading resources too thinly. Her argument, which I agree with, is it is better to do well at some races than badly at all of them. She hopes to expand to other races when money allows. Some cars look horrendous with logos splattered anywhere.

  • Steven Roy12/08/2009 at 17:21

am guessing a meteorite shower corrupted your non-ecc checked ram.

There is a big meteorite shower in progress over the next couple of days. If you are in the UK and there is no cloud look to the north east tonight and you should see lots of meteors

  • Pat W12/08/2009 at 17:23

    What about the drivers' championship?

Between Penske and Ganassi only. Much like the Ferrari/McLaren era really. The others are there to promote brands and gradually improve themselves until they start winning.

  • Jarrett in CT12/08/2009 at 17:25

Any idea how long it lasts for?

The peaks are only a few hours but the event is usually a couple of days. Most showers are a few days wide in totality as the Earth passes through.

What's Footloose? Do I need to add it to my list?

Evening all, just been trolling back through the comments, I can't believe Christine's never seen Footloose, Kevin Bacon is fantastic in it. My first album - "Hits of the Rocking 70's" including Sugar Baby Love by the Rubettes and Lulu's version of The Man who Sold the World. Yes, I really am that old :-)

  • Jarrett in CT12/08/2009 at 17:41

    Kenny Loggins......shudder.

  • Bassano Clapper12/08/2009 at 17:41

The song on the Great Britain GP?

Monaco. Etta James: A Sunday Kind Of Love

    Turkey. The Vines: Ride

    Britain. Kasabian: Fire

  • Jarrett in CT12/08/2009 at 17:43

    Hehe, I knew Monaco.

  • Bassano Clapper12/08/2009 at 17:44

Germany. Oasis: Rock 'N' Roll Star

Hungary. Girls Aloud: Wake Me Up (No need to buy that one though)

  • Pat W12/08/2009 at 17:45

:D This'll be fun. This will also make Pat W VERY happy. ;)

    It'll be fun!! I can't wait. Although..

  • Steven Roy12/08/2009 at 17:55

...F1 cars in the 80s looked cool? :D But yeah, fat chance of us ever getting those again.

Turbos with 1000bhp in the races and 1500 in qualifying engines that only lasted a few laps. Proper qualifying and qualifying tyres. All sorts of different teams winning and competing at the front. And Ferrari entering 20 years of oblivion.

    Bring back the 80s

  • Bassano Clapper12/08/2009 at 17:56

I liked that but I did hear it live on Marc & Lard's show and the context of the show helps, it was one big laugh from start to finish :-)

second apple problem this week (first being the big itunes problem i had) i was listening to my ipod (as i have been all day) and suddenly it just stopped. i assumed it had run out of battery, so i plugged it into my laptop and nothing happened. i plugged it into the desktop comp and nothing happened, and plugged it into the mains and nothing happened... i've tried trying to turn it on while it's plugged in to some power, and when it's not plugged into the power... nothing is happening and it's kinda permanently off. any suggestions other to panic?

How long have you left it plugged into the mains for?

    Try it for a good 20 - 30mins

You may have depleted the battery completely

It may take a little bit to have enough juice to fire up

this is easy. how long to races last?

The distances tend to be longer than F1 races and the cars are slower (on road courses at least), so allow 2 hours flag to flag, plus the pre-race show if there is one.

    cantu, crypton, scuderia italia chesterfield.

    hahahahahaha. no.

  • Pat W12/08/2009 at 18:11

is scott a big cheater very talented man too?

Yes. The pit boxes are arranged per last season's points. The champion gets the box on pit exit. Every driver has to make tight right-left turn to get back on to the pit apron to avoid the car/mechanic in front - every driver except Scott who just drives straight ahead and thus doesn't lose any time with the tight turn. You're seeing a pattern aren't you.

  • lou12/08/2009 at 18:12

I should say this isn't actually a cheat - it is perfectly legitimate under the rules - and he is a very good driver.

  • Steven Roy12/08/2009 at 18:16

Yes. The pit boxes are arranged per last season's points. The champion gets the box on pit exit. And every driver has his own pit box and pit crew so Franck won't have to queue with 4 other AGR cars.

  • Steven Roy12/08/2009 at 18:16

It's only because I watched it in Peru a few years ago.

  • Pat W12/08/2009 at 18:18

so if i have this right. indy practice/qually is on the saturday and franck should get 45mins more practice than others because he's a rookie.

Yes. For a couple of years now they have been experimenting with only running the cars on two days to save costs. They are able to this because while IRL teams moan as much as teams anywhere, the default setting is "well we don't really like, but its the same for everybody so we'll do our best". The atmosphere in the paddock is SO different to F1.

  • Pat W12/08/2009 at 18:18

  • Pat W12/08/2009 at 18:23

Another IRL fact: Scott Dixon does not run with the #1 on his car that he is entitled to as the 2008 champion as the teams sponsor Target, are "known for running cars #9 and #10"

I think that might mean 'Target Chip Ganassi are known..'.

But yeah it is like MotoGP in that the #1 is optional.

”Giancarlo Fisichello, of Force India, once identified by Ferrari as a star of the future, is also being mentioned after it became known that he would test-drive for the team next year”

    Did anyone else know this? I had no idea! {Comment #502}

I didn't know Fisi was considering a Ferrari test drive at this point either - I thought after 2004 he'd regarded getting into Ferrari as something of a lost cause.

Mind you, Fisi has long been keen on racing for Ferrari but I've yet to see much evidence that it is mutual...

ahh, that is the problem of course.

I'll take this though as an unexpected win, much like Vettel at Monza.

The quote said he would be Ferrari's tester, which is annoyingly ambiguous because it could simply mean Fisi wouldn't mind testing for Ferrari next year, as opposed to an agreement having been reached...

i have an external hard drive... i just need to be bothered to move all my music over to it. then again it makes playing songs and podcasts on my laptop when i'm upstairs (and the hard drive is downstairs) difficult..

A lot of the podcasts I listen to (mainly the Dr Who & 606 ones) are over an hour each, thank goodness I travel on the train every day or I'd have an inbox like Mrs C!

i'd also like to point out, a race 2cv is nothing like a 2cv with a roll cage and a seat in it, theres alot more too it. a team made this mistake thinking they could build a car over 1.5 days (thursday/friday) and only just made the start...and came last..

  • Nick12/08/2009 at 20:09

I still think the moths and spiders are in plans together against us Sidepodders. Hell after listening to Uprising telling me the whole world is part of a conspiracy, I think everything is in plans to take us all down. Toasters, socks, fireplaces, everything. It's all a big conspiracy to annoy us. Damn conspiracies.

Quick question, why is the now show on the drop?

  • guille230612/08/2009 at 22:07

Everyone who just got here needs to pick yourself an irl driver for the big race

    http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/IRL+Support

If Helio is taken, I'll add myself later when I decide if it's going to be Tony Kanan or Paul Tracy (just because they where driven when I stop watching CART...)

  • me12/08/2009 at 22:08

  • Lukeh12/08/2009 at 22:09

ya clearly didn't have to grow up listening to it!

don't worry, no spider or human was hurt in the making of that image. the spider was safely conducted to the outside with the help of sheet of paper

I don't get this irrational fear of something that's probably more scared of you. Spiders are lovely, we actively encourage them.

Lot's of people here just leave a huntsman spider alone. If you get rid of it, another one will just take it's place.

My family come over from australia so there is a chance they could have brought one along whcih could be poisonous.

Ingeneral they get away, i kill them if they look evil, its nothing personal, i have been bitten by a spider (verry minor) and i dont want to be again
