We're into Saturday now, and it's qualifying day - we continue to argue this is the best part of the race weekend. Let us know if you disagree! Anyway, there is plenty going on in the paddock, not all of it confined to the track, so here's what we're talking about:

  • There's plenty to evaluate in terms of Free Practice results, including the battle between newly installed Fisichella and the resident Raikkonen. I can't quite get over the fact that we didn't end the day with someone two seconds off the pace of their nearest car, but that would be because Badoer was lifting cardboard boxes.
  • The FIA are evaluating the options for the final grid slot for next year and have narrowed it down to three. We had a bit of a discussion over what to call BMW, with my suggestion being the Team Formerly Known As. It was decided that simply Sauber was the best way to go, as it looks like Peter will be the best chance they have of surviving.
  • Don't forget to put in your predictions for the SofaF1 Pole Poll, if you are in the competition. I feel kinda bad linking to this post because it's only two lines, but still. Mr C is ridiculously happy that he is leading the championship at the moment, but he did forget to change his Fantasy Racers drivers, so ha!

That'll do it for now. Let us know what you're up to this weekend, when you're not tuning in to the live commenting threads to watch the sessions with us, that is. I'll see you in the comments.

    It's a new dawn, it's a new day, it's a new liiiiiife...

I'm just happy I get to see my first qualifying session in months today. :D Although I should be ashamed for giving into my Resistance, ur, resistance. Tut tut.

Yep, I booked it off because I wanted a Satursay off, then found out I'm off next saturday too. Woo!

It should be here tomorrow. I gave into the fact that Muse's website were streaming it on their website from today. Totally don't regret that though whatsoever.

everyone needs to check it out if only for the Exogenesis Symphony at the end.

  • startledbunny11/09/2009 at 23:33

    Been reading the Sporting Regulations.

The FIA put some kind of seal on the engines between races.

And there would be no benefit for vettel to change an engine twice in a weekend. He can't use them again.

  • Nick11/09/2009 at 23:35

The FIA put some kind of seal on the engines between races.

They seal the engines so they cant be repaired or modified after they are first used... the seal doesnt mean they cant be used

  • startledbunny11/09/2009 at 23:48

i get that, my vague interpretation is poor.

    2009 sporting regulations

Article 28.4 describes engine rules. looks like they can't be used again except on the last event of the season?

    Evening all....

I left doohickey around 8, it went to sleep, just un-sleeped it and was watching it bring comments in a page at a time, trying to catch up and then it updated even more! hehehe.

Ah i see what you mean.

I read it like this... If you want an additinal engine (or 2) you can change them

However if you change an engine between qualifying and the race, that engine is ruled as dead and may not be used again exept for the last race of the year?

  • Alianora La Canta11/09/2009 at 23:55

I'm happy with how yesterday evening went - with plenty of help from Dad, I made Mum pasta with peas and ham for tea as a present. Considering that the limit of my culinary skills was basically cheese sandwiches, this was quite an achievement.

Slow and chilled evening, all that's missing is the JD & Coke. Will have to buy some tomorrow.

Sounds nice. Pasta is a good place to start when picking up cooking. I can't do much more than that tbh..

However if you change an engine between qualifying and the race, that engine is ruled as dead and may not be used again exept for the last race of the year?

Yes, that bit was unusual. Why the last race? Vettel's situation is worse than I assumed it to be.

Yes, that bit was unusual. Why the last race? Vettel's situation is worse than I assumed it to be.

It doesnt rreally effect him, this is just a penalty to stop people using engines for quali and then racing on otheres.

I assume they are allowed to use them at the last race because they were worried people would run out of engines... but it is a bit strange...

  • Jon Waldock12/09/2009 at 00:00

Ok, why argue with a photocopier? Although I fix them, and have every reason to argue with them.

It was one of those flashy ones, my girlfriends making lots of booklets for her uni CU and the photocopier got to 200 (it double sided printed them, then folded them, and then stapled them, twas amazing) and then decided to run out of staples....but told us there was a paper jam instead (when there wasnt)

Nick, I believe your interpretation is correct. As good a reason as any to only change those engines which can be changed between the start of Saturday and qualifying (i.e. one before the final practise session and one after).

  • Nick12/09/2009 at 00:01

I'd settle for one at work that printed bus tickets when bus tickets were put in rather than random bits of the bureaucratic bundle put in previously! In case you're wondering, the unit got halfway through copying the second page of said bundle before getting confused and jamming - and blaming the bus ticket, which hadn't moved from its original location in the "in" tray...

The tyres that grip the paper, if they don't push it through to the next stage within a matter of milliseconds, the machine stops, even though there is no jam.

    Im not here but...

Theres been an outbreak of thefts at Monza....This is an actual true story

"Andi Zuber had both of his helmets and a HANS device stolen, Luca Filippi had two of his three race suits nicked along with a load of Super Nova's clothing, while Christian came out to tell us that a huge amount of the meat for the weekend was taken and also that, weirdly, they'd eaten the insides of a lot of bread but left the crusts."

    ---

"The break in the weather gave some of us the chance to escape for the evening, but if the thieves are reading this, please note we've locked everything up and employed a crack security force. And dogs. And laser beams. Lots and lots of laser beams. But none of that was enough for poor old Andi, who had to buy a brand new helmet (and insisted that Alastair didn't take any shots of him today, because he was wearing a plain carbon fibre lid instead of his usual immaculate paint job). He left the track after dinner carrying his helmet himself, and the look on his face suggested that he might well be hugging it all night, just to make sure it's safe."

  • Steven Roy12/09/2009 at 00:25

Something about the fact that the wheels emerge from the underneath but they must be rubber and have survived the trip from space.

    I don't understand him.

  • Steven Roy12/09/2009 at 00:58

I think if I had just landed the shuttle I would just hit the big red off switch and let someone else sort out all the other things that need to be done

Something about the fact that the wheels emerge from the underneath but they must be rubber and have survived the trip from space.

They are in a sealed compartment. The tyres are warmed up becuase the underside of the shuttle is a heat shield that has to deal with thousands of degrees. I think the fact the people survive is moreimpresive than the undercarriage working

  • startledbunny12/09/2009 at 01:00

I was surprised at how quickly they deployed

same here. they don't look too big neither. i was expecting them to be bigger than a standard aircraft's because of the landing speeds.

  • Steven Roy12/09/2009 at 01:01

I was surprised at how quickly they deployed

They deploy really late so they have to be quick. They only get one shot at landing.

They deployed the chute late because of crosswinds

  • Steven Roy12/09/2009 at 01:02

same here. they don't look too big neither. i was expecting them to be bigger than a standard aircraft's because of the landing speeds.

They are bigger than they look but I can't remember how big. The crew will do a wander round when they come out and you get an idea of scale then

Don't they have a big fan somewhere to cool the surface down? I remember from the first landing there was one there.

I have neer seen a fan. Once the speed gets down it must cool quickly. I know they have plasma forming at something ridiculous lik 15,000 Celsius during the landing

  • Steven Roy12/09/2009 at 01:07

    Hi everyone. What's new?

    Space shuttle just landed

  • startledbunny12/09/2009 at 01:07

  • Steven Roy12/09/2009 at 01:08

You can see now that the tyres are more than waist high against the ground crew

  • Steven Roy12/09/2009 at 01:09

    Nikki, startledbunny,

Are you two getting plenty of contributions for your sidepodradio show?

It appears so on the wiki. more than I expected.

    Hi everyone. What's new?

Hi. I am going to bed. Night all.

  • Nikki12/09/2009 at 01:11

    hi nikki, how are you?

Wired. You? I have a very cool interview for Travels in Sidepodland ... !

  • Steven Roy12/09/2009 at 01:11

It appears so on the wiki. more than I expected.

That' good. Amy said she would leave something when she wakes up. The more contributions the easier the show.

  • Nikki12/09/2009 at 01:12

Indeed. I just need to get the files from Christine. I got three from her already.

  • Nikki12/09/2009 at 01:16

Can you send them to me yet?

If you're going to be up for a while, we can chat on Skype. I sent you an "add me" request.

    Now I'm intrigued!

Small spoiler: I went to interview my boss because she likes to travel and discovered a totally random F1 connection!

Have to run, but before I do, just wanna share this - a fantastic read from PatroniseF1:

Six of the Best... Commentary Moments

  • Steven Roy12/09/2009 at 02:07

Time I was in bed. NASA seem to think everything went perfectly with the landing with the only complication being that they have to mount the shuttle on the modified 747 and fly it across country. The 747 uses one gallon of fuel for each length of the plane.

The next shuttle mission will be STS129 by the shuttle Atlantis and is scheduled to launch on November 9th.

  • startledbunny12/09/2009 at 02:09

night Steven, thanks for mentioning the NASA landing, glad I got to see one.

If anyone is out there... hello everyone.

Sorry I've been away. Work has been overwhelming the last two weeks. 1500 miles on the car, too many boring meetings and too much terrible hotel meals.

    What is happen'in?

  • Nikki12/09/2009 at 04:21

    Hey Dan! Welcome back.

  • Dan Brunell12/09/2009 at 04:26

    Hey Dan! Welcome back.

    Thanks anything going on?

I am watching the F1 debrief show on SpeedTV, I've noticed that they use several different camera angles that we didn't see in the race. The camera at the base of Eau Rouge is awesome.

  • Nikki12/09/2009 at 04:35

I'll have to check it out. I think we PVR'd it. It did seem like there were no cameras on the back straight during practice. Did you notice?

Actually, I literally got back in the door about two hours ago. I was going to go to JustinTV and check out qualifying. I think I am going to stay up through the night since and go without sleep. There is a lot I want to get caught up on before qualifying.

  • Nikki12/09/2009 at 04:42

You're insane! I'm working on my SidepodRadio show. I don't think I'll watch qualifying live. Speed broadcasts it on a 5-min delay, so participating in live commenting means JustinTV on my teeny monitor at the crack of dawn rather than on the comfy couch watching the big screen TV. I wish it wasn't on delay.

  • Journeyer12/09/2009 at 13:31

I like it! I want it! I will shoot anyone who buys it!

So buy it - or get Christine's help to buy it for you in the meantime. :D

  • Bassano Clapper12/09/2009 at 13:31

For the first time since (that I can find) Spain 2008, JENNI IS IN THE PADDOCK

    Oh, hello!

  • Jeremy (GMT+10)12/09/2009 at 13:31

how does one buy a domain name? I don't even know where to go to do such a thing. *new to this*

    www.crazydomains.com.au?

    www.godaddy.com?

  • Amy12/09/2009 at 13:32

In exchange for me giving you that domain you have to start a blog though :)

OK. I shall also buy you a drink at the pub in London that I found that I am demanding we go to. DEMANDING.

  • Amy12/09/2009 at 13:32

    Oh, hello!

I heart Jenni. She always looks so angry.

  • Alex Andronov12/09/2009 at 13:33

    Can we go now?

  • Amy12/09/2009 at 13:34

    Can we go now?

You're not allowed to go without me, so no. No you cannot.

I heart Jenni 'cos she rocks,

I'm still Jenni from the block,

You think I'm an F1 fan but I'm not,

    I'm still Jenni Raikkonnen

I think the last line needs some work ;)

  • Bassano Clapper12/09/2009 at 13:35

I heart Jenni. She always looks so angry.

She does have to put up with Kimi's shenanigans, poor girl :)

  • Journeyer12/09/2009 at 13:35

Random thought - I want Sutil to win. 7th winner in 7 races. :D

  • Bassano Clapper12/09/2009 at 13:36

I think the last line needs some work ;)

If she's in the video I can always turn the sound down

    Works for Girls Aloud ;)

  • Alex Andronov12/09/2009 at 13:36

There are lots of domain name registrars available I use a uk based one www.123-reg.co.uk but other registrars are available.

First you need to do that then you need to sign up at wordpress and the you need to point the domain at the wordpress site.

  • Sara12/09/2009 at 13:36

    Bless Kimi.

  • Bassano Clapper12/09/2009 at 13:37

Random thought - I want Sutil to win. 7th winner in 7 races. :D

It could happen but I'm thinking Lewis or Kimi

Sutil will be lucky to be fourth after the first corner

  • Alex Andronov12/09/2009 at 13:37

I think he'll be lucky to be 6 by the end of the first lap.

  • Bassano Clapper12/09/2009 at 13:38

OK. I shall also buy you a drink at the pub in London that I found that I am demanding we go to. DEMANDING.

    Which pub?

  • Amy12/09/2009 at 13:38

    Which pub?

It's a secret but theres a hint in my Travels in Sidepodland segment :D

  • Journeyer12/09/2009 at 13:38

    *is being sneaky*

    *is being sneaky*

you'll find out on September 20!

  • Bassano Clapper12/09/2009 at 13:40

    The the eff is that?

    *What*

  • Bassano Clapper12/09/2009 at 13:40

you'll find out on September 20!

    Next week?

  • Sara12/09/2009 at 13:40

Its some dance thing that won Britains got talent. Apparently

  • Alex Andronov12/09/2009 at 13:41

do you pay extra for that 'pointing' Alex?

    Here's the lowdown...

Domains cost money and are just names that point at places

Then there is hosting which is like a hard disk on the internet. This also costs money.

If you want your own website you often need both and so you can often buy a domain and hosting together.

But in this case you don't want the hosting just the domain because wordpress is going to do the hosting for you.

  • Bassano Clapper12/09/2009 at 13:41

I think he'll be lucky to be 6 by the end of the first lap.

I think he'll be happy for Kimi to leave him alone. :D

    True, forgot about that

Kimi & Sutil out at 1st corner then

  • Alex Andronov12/09/2009 at 13:41

    Next week?

    Sidepodradio

  • Bassano Clapper12/09/2009 at 13:42

Its some dance thing that won Britains got talent. Apparently

Oh dear, a load of pants then

Think I'd rather watch Derren Brown

  • Alex Andronov12/09/2009 at 13:42

you'll find out on September 20!

Ah then maybe we'll find the pub... but we can't go without you.

  • Amy12/09/2009 at 13:42

But in this case you don't want the hosting just the domain because wordpress is going to do the hosting for you.

blog exists! Now, to buy myself a domain

  • Bassano Clapper12/09/2009 at 13:42

    Next week?

    Sidepodradio

    Of course

Eek, better do some prep this week then

  • Sara12/09/2009 at 13:42

I think Michael Lynagh is confused.

  • Amy12/09/2009 at 13:43

Ah then maybe we'll find the pub... but we can't go without you.

I found it on Google maps and fell in love

  • Sara12/09/2009 at 13:43

    Great site

  • Bassano Clapper12/09/2009 at 13:44

I'm looking forward to listening to you all on Sidepodradio :D

    There's a slot available, I think

  • Jeremy (GMT+10)12/09/2009 at 13:44

But in this case you don't want the hosting just the domain because wordpress is going to do the hosting for you.

hence the question about whether the registrar you suggested will charge for the DNS forwarding (changing the cname records?)

I've got my domain names through crazy domains and they charge $18 AUD extra when I want to host the site via my mobile me account

  • Bassano Clapper12/09/2009 at 13:45
  • Amy12/09/2009 at 13:45

Have you looked it up on beerintheevening.com ?

    it gets a 6.3/10 :D

They made a documentary about it too. That's pretty cool.

  • Sara12/09/2009 at 13:46

I'm quite happy just listening. *nods* Its best that way.

  • Bassano Clapper12/09/2009 at 13:46

Where is it, borough or post code?

  • Bassano Clapper12/09/2009 at 13:46

I'm quite happy just listening. *nods* Its best that way.

Nonsense, jump in. The water's lovely

  • Amy12/09/2009 at 13:47

Where is it, borough or post code?

how about I give you the answer and link to the website

That one doesn't exist anymore though, now its a permanent structure :D

  • Alex Andronov12/09/2009 at 13:48

hence the question about whether the registrar you suggested will charge for the DNS forwarding (changing the cname records?)

ah right. No these guys will let you change cnames for free.

  • Amy12/09/2009 at 13:49

ah right. No these guys will let you change cnames for free.

is just getting the domain straight from wordpress worth it? seems super easy.

  • Alex Andronov12/09/2009 at 13:50

    sounds like a good plan

  • Amy12/09/2009 at 13:51

Where is it, borough or post code?

because seriously, they sent a pub from my home town, on a boat, all the way to London. How can that not be the best pub in the world?

  • Bassano Clapper12/09/2009 at 13:52

how about I give you the answer and link to the website

  • Amy12/09/2009 at 13:53

    Don't mind a bit of Speight's

They stopped selling it here, it's a long way to go to get some :D It's the only pub in the world outside of NZ that sells it on tap.

  • Sara12/09/2009 at 13:54

I need to put my birthday back on the list.. :S

  • Bassano Clapper12/09/2009 at 13:54

Would have to be Watermelon I think

It's a kiwi bird and an awful beer that's marketed to the FHM/Loaded/Nuts audience. Bloody funny ads though!

  • Amy12/09/2009 at 14:07

    Toohey's Old

I don't have a clue what the Speights one is like because the only other "dark" beer I have tried is Guinness and I don't remember if they tasted the same, I only remember I liked them both :D

Clearly the only solution is for you to try some when I am in town.

  • Scott Woodwiss12/09/2009 at 14:08

Totally, Mainly for content reasons, i want to do interviews and such and at the moment am having to email lots of people, which is fine, but can be hit and miss. I have a Formula 2 driver lined up, and potentially a World Series driver too!

my only problem was volume because even on 100% I couldn't hear it (my speakers are rubbishly quiet) so had to dig out the headphones.

Yeah, appologies for that, i had the main mix channel on my mixer too low and was controlling the sound in my headphones instead of the channel that was recording. All should be sorted in this weeks.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)12/09/2009 at 16:08

Have you guys read this post from Joe?

    Quote FTA:

n French law it is not possible for a private individual or a company to commence criminal proceedings. All they can do is to claim that a crime has been committed and ask the authorities to investigate. These claims will then be examined in a judicial investigation, which will be performed by police, working for a law officer known as a “Procureur de la Republique”. The procureur wil look at the evidence put forward and will decide whether it is in the public interest to take the case further. If the claims are deemed to have substance then a criminal procedure will be initiated with a summons being issued.

    F5 isn't doing it!

  • Bassano Clapper12/09/2009 at 16:26

Who knows. I prefer Peter Windsor though...

I prefer Krusti the Klown doing it over James Allen

  • Amy12/09/2009 at 16:26

gone as quickly as i said it.

it ain't over 'til its game, set and match.

to which I say "well done Heikki"

and well done, Brawn - easily outqualifing RBR despite having more fuel...

  • Amy12/09/2009 at 16:33

now, chop chop Gavin, I really want to know who is on weight adjusted pole :D

  • RG12/09/2009 at 16:33

to which I say "well done Heikki"

    Oooh, Button shoulda done better

  • Amy12/09/2009 at 16:34

    Oooh, Button shoulda done better

yep, outqualified by a heavier Rubens again.

I always have to reopen live timing when the weights come out because I forget who is where :D

  • lou12/09/2009 at 16:34

    Oooh, Button shoulda done better

the brawns were really close together... there is what... a lap's difference in fuel? they did fine :)

  • Journeyer12/09/2009 at 16:35

yep, outqualified by a heavier Rubens again.

I always have to reopen live timing when the weights come out because I forget who is where :D

I'm guessing it'll either be Rubens or... gasp, Heikki!

  • Amy12/09/2009 at 16:36

the brawns were really close together... there is what... a lap's difference in fuel? they did fine :)

and it was 0.015 difference in time heheh HUGE MARGIN

and it was 0.015 difference in time heheh HUGE MARGIN

    haha :D

  • Journeyer12/09/2009 at 16:36

the brawns were really close together... there is what... a lap's difference in fuel? they did fine :)

But as it stands, Button's starting on the dirty side, and with less fuel than Rubens, will make it more difficult for him to jump past in the stops...

  • lou12/09/2009 at 16:37

But as it stands, Button's starting on the dirty side, and with less fuel than Rubens, will make it more difficult for him to jump past in the stops...

however generally, over the season, Jenson has had better luck at the start than Rubens...

  • Journeyer12/09/2009 at 16:37

But as it stands, Button's starting on the dirty side, and with less fuel than Rubens, will make it more difficult for him to jump past in the stops...

That said, if Brawn play their cards right, they can score big gains over RBR and virtually take them out of title contention, leaving the battle to themselves.

  • Journeyer12/09/2009 at 16:38

however generally, over the season, Jenson has had better luck at the start than Rubens...

indeed. that said, both haven't been particularly good at the start.

shh...i know this.. i'm just trying to make myself feel better about the fact Jenson hasn't seemed to be able to hold on to that awesome quali luck he had at the beginning of the season ;)

  • Amy12/09/2009 at 16:40

New video of how well Forza Motosport 3 performs. Gonna get all techy and geeky here but I'm super impressed how for a racing game it managed to stay at 60 frames p/sec but doesn't slowdown or lag or anything, runs beautifully considering how good it looks!

  • Rich12/09/2009 at 17:20

Not sure if this has been discussed here are the weights

    1. Lewis Hamilton, McLaren, 653.5kg

    2. Adrian Sutil, Force India, 655

    3. Kimi Raikkonen, Ferrari, 662

    4. Heikki Kovalainen, McLaren, 683

    5. Rubens Barrichello, Brawn GP, 688.5

    6. Jenson Button, Brawn GP, 687

    7. Vitantonio Liuzzi, Force India, 679.5

    8. Fernando Alonso, Renault, 677.5

    9. Sebastian Vettel, Red Bull, 682

    10. Mark Webber, Red Bull, 683

    11. Jarno Trulli, Toyota, 703

    12. Romain Grosjean, Renault, 699.8

    13. Robert Kubica, BMW Sauber, 697.5

    14. Giancarlo Fisichella, Ferrari, 690

    15. Nick Heidfeld, BMW Sauber, 697.5

    16. Timo Glock, Toyota, 709.8

    17. Kazuki Nakajima, Williams, 706.2

    18. Nico Rosberg, Williams, 708.6

    19. Sebastien Buemi, Toro Rosso, 706

    20. Jaime Alguersuari, Toro Rosso, 706

Lewis is not that light and given that Kovy is heavy it means the Macca are seriously fast today. As expected Liuzzi is a bit heavier than Sutil. Both Brawns are heavy with Rubens being heavier. Both Red Bulls are also quite heavy.

  • Scott Woodwiss12/09/2009 at 17:27

Not sure if this has been discussed here are the weights

its possible. you should see the state of my room. I even printed out a to-do list of steps to make it clean again but so far the only one on it I have done is 'make banana muffins' (which counts as cleaning because now my fruit bowl is clear of over-ripe fruit)

umm. i'm not sure we know that do we? all flav has done is tried to cause a rift between father and son. or did i miss something else?

What he said in Italian was something like the following

"A couple of hours ago Flavio Briatore gave an interview for multiple journalists in Monza to present a new view of the current Renault crisis. He finally talked a bit about the whole thing, but added the wierdest factor in the whole ridiculous story.

Nelsinho Piquet alledgedly had a homossexual relationship with a much older man in Oxford. This man even lived with him for some time. Briatore in theory brought him from Oxford to London and made him break this relationship because of image problems, etc. In theory, this was agreed with Nelsinho's father. That was the beginning of the whole crisis between Piquet and Renault."

  • Kathi12/09/2009 at 19:03

  • Scott Woodwiss12/09/2009 at 19:03

Plus I still have the original and I flippin' love that game!

Seriously, the sequel is everything the first game should have been!

  • James12/09/2009 at 19:03

Nelsinho Piquet alledgedly had a homossexual relationship with a much older man in Oxford. This man even lived with him for some time. Briatore in theory brought him from Oxford to London and made him break this relationship because of image problems, etc. In theory, this was agreed with Nelsinho's father. That was the beginning of the whole crisis between Piquet and Renault."

    :o

    Flav hits back :D

3x the price of making my own. Spa budget!

True. I just went to get a pizza from the shop, I really really wanted some Guinness to go with it and some JD for later, but can only really afford one at a time.. so I had to choose.

it's not smart of flav. really stupid in fact, but i see what he's trying to do. will it work? unlikely. should he have done it? no.

he must be very angry with the piquet's though. for reasons we probably don't even know/

If it is true, what a pathetic way to bring out Nelson too, extremely unecessary for him. It should be about the alleged cheating on track, not the alleged choices of Nelson's sexuality.

Of course, as mr c says, all we can do at the moment is take it as alleged stories.

It is Flavio's tactics that I am curious about, have a look at Joe's Blog on Flavio and Renault proposed legal action. There are very few known certainties and a lot of coincidences.

I am really not sure quite what the Piquets hope to gain - this is not so much revenge as career suicide.

renault took the right approach in the beginning, by saying nothing at all. another issue though, is we don't even know if the piquet's were responsible for leaking the document, or if it was someone else with a grudge against flav, using the snr and jnr to leverage some pain.

whatever the case, renault had to answer back, and now flav felt the need to chip in some more.

i suspect he may live to regret this secondary salvo though.

i suspect he may live to regret this secondary salvo though.

here is an old interview with Nelson with a bit that might be related...

How old were you when you started racing, and who mentored you?

I started when I was eight, and it was my father who taught me initially.

But after a few months he got me a mechanic who he trusted called Agnaldo Furlani, and after a year it was just Agnaldo and I. He's like my second father and I was with him all the time from eight to 19 years old.

He moved with me to England where we shared a house. He was just a go-kart mechanic originally, but learned all about car mechanics and gearboxes so he could make the step up to Formula 3 with me. He stayed two years in the UK, before he had to go back to Brazil to be with his wife and kids, so he didn't come to GP2 with me unfortunately.

hmmm. how much of a hand did flav have in his gp2 career?

Rubens has jumped into the defense of Nelson Jnr, despite having real issues with his dad according to a recent autosport post.

When I heard the Flavio had bought a football club I had hoped we would not see much of him in the F1 Tracks. It is a gut feeling but I do not like the guy (like Max and Jean Todt). I know Alonso say he is one of the good guys - I just do not see it.

  • Stuart C12/09/2009 at 19:54

    What else has Stuart predicted?

Can't for the life of me remember who spilled that original info, but it is true. The bank is rebranding all its UK assets under the Santander brand next year. Word is that they at least want to stay on Lewis because he has more traction with the British public at large – you know what I mean, cardboard cut-out in every window, etc.

Anyway, the president dodged the issue at the Ferrari presser on Thursday. It was quite difficult to push the question because he was talking in Spanish and the simultaneous translation into English kept migrating to different channels on the headsets, so it was all a bit chaotic. Afterwards, a certain McLaren rep was rather miffed at the failure of the Fourth Estate to press the issue.

I gather they're leaking it out the back door at the moment – saw Andrea Cremonesi of Gazzetta being led off to a quiet corner for a briefing earlier today.

if he’s not even at the track?

Remote viewing? He's not here. Late call owing to illness in the family, I'm afraid.

Yeah, Piquet Snr only knows how to play dirty.

It's just another 'scandal' that drags our sport through the media with an ever decreasing sense of perception though isn't it.

    rubens news:

"my gear box is fine and run well today. We will be ok..."

  • Rich12/09/2009 at 20:08

He is just chucking muck around hoping it will stick. Flavio is toast when this case comes up. He doesn't know what he is up against with Piquet senior. He owned the gutter before Flav knew what a racing car was. If he wants to slag of Piquet's kid there will be retaliation.

I am not sure about Flav's judgement remember what he said about the two Brawn drivers (that one should be retired and the other as slow as a mile post!) still not doing to badly with first and second in the championship and a lot of time for the teams to get their Rear Diffusers right .

  • lou12/09/2009 at 20:09

  • Rich12/09/2009 at 20:09

that's a bit harsh. on the other hand, isn't it a bit early to be buying motorhomes? they don't need them until spain next year.

Probably got it cheap, but now will not be able to sell it!

  • Stuart C12/09/2009 at 20:10

what is your opinion of jamie's gearbox?

Flavio is clueless and just likes stirring things up. You have to remember that unlike most of the top people in F1 teams he had no history of involvement with the sport. He got the job because he set up shops selling Italian jumpers to Americans.

  • Christine12/09/2009 at 20:12

what is your opinion of jamie's gearbox?

It's different to the one he had yesterday.

  • Rich12/09/2009 at 20:13

They are both Brawn drivers and Jenson still has a healthy lead. Who can really say they do not like Rubens? - he even wished Fizzy well in his move to Ferrari.

  • lou12/09/2009 at 20:15

Are you switching from Jenson to Rubens?

no. i like them both... i wouldn't want either of them to have to have a penalty :)

  • Steven Roy12/09/2009 at 20:15

But that was only because the space shuttle doesn't have a gearbox

If I was running near the front of the championship and someone moved out of a car he was more or less guaranteed to be competitive in this week into one he had never driven before I would shake his hanf till his watch strap wore through.

  • Andy Taylor12/09/2009 at 20:18

But that was only because the space shuttle doesn't have a gearbox

It has 3 - one for each of the landing gear to sit in when not in use.

  • Stuart C12/09/2009 at 20:19

Is anyone seriously considering him? Does he have sponsorship?

There are plenty of drivers hanging around in the paddock tilting for a drive with the new teams (and all, of course, waiting for the Alonso announcement before anybody can do anything). Whether Antonio is one of them remains to be seen.

I found myself in the curious position of giving the team principal of one of these new teams a lift to the circuit yesterday. He ran Antonio in the junior formulae and said he was one of the quickest drivers he'd ever seen, but very fragile and needing careful management.

  • Steven Roy12/09/2009 at 20:20

Sure, especially if the replacement driver was weak, but Luizzi has been remarkable close to Adrian in qualifying so it makes less difference.

Jenson is not cracking up, at the very most Jenson likes a car to be set up in a certain way and they have just not found quite that set-up. It is incredibly close this year so small differences have a big significance. It is pity Rubens make as many mistakes, especially at the start - but still he is scoring the points.

  • Steven Roy12/09/2009 at 20:37

NcNish is an amazing driver, but I really suspect he would never have made the grade - it is a pity he did not have more opportunity though.

McNish was world championship standard driver. Marlboro had him and Hakkinen in Formula Vauxhall Lotus in 1988. The following year they had one F3 seast and they dropped Hakkinen so that they could keep McNish. McNish was supposed to take a year to learn F3 and go for the championship the following year. He won it but lost it on a technicality after the season.

The following season he stepped up to F3000 and had a horrible accident at Donington in the first race of the season. He left the tack and landed in a tunnel under the track. His car killed a pedestrian. He was only 19/20 at the time but ended the season 3rd or 4th in the championship and was the lead driver in the top team in the championship in 1992 and was a massive favourite to win the F3000 cahmpionship. Unfortunately his team was effectively the works Lola team and that year Lola built a dog. The Reynard blew it away and most of the Lola teams switched to Reyards but because he was in the works team he had to persevere with it. His single seater career lost all momentum that year.

  • Pat W12/09/2009 at 20:38

  • Stuart C12/09/2009 at 20:39

it is a pity he did not have more opportunity though.

Salo was quick but also lazy, apparently, and would do naughty stuff such as waiting until the last bit of qualifying before applying a set-up tweak he knew would work (changing tyre pressures and such) in order to go just a bit quicker. That's why he got the push as well.

  • jackie/saltire12/09/2009 at 20:39

It certainly true Jenson is struggling to get the cars/tyres to his liking but I think he is tenser than before. I don't think he is making mistakes as such just not driving as fluently or naturally as before

  • jackie/saltire12/09/2009 at 20:41

Yea and Nelson Piquet was British F3 champion at some ridiculously young age. Schumacher in lower series was not particularly impressive, Frentzen was. McNish is an amazing sportscar driver but in F1 in the Toyota there was not enough evidence of him making the F1 grade - it is hard but those are the facts. I would have given both Toyota drivers more time - but that's history.

Last night of the proms is on.

    Enjoy!

I'm off to bed. Early start tomorrow to beat the traffic.

  • Steven Roy12/09/2009 at 20:43

Salo was quick but also lazy, apparently, and would do naughty stuff such as waiting until the last bit of qualifying before applying a set-up tweak he knew would work (changing tyre pressures and such) in order to go just a bit quicker. That's why he got the push as well.

I heard Midweek Motorsport have a dig at Salo for that season a few weeks ago. They seemed to think gettin rid of him was a good idea but not getting rid of McNish

  • Steven Roy12/09/2009 at 20:44

LPG has just been made aware of the fact that Sidepodradio is on the 20th. Her not knowing may or may not have been my fault.

I guess you will get the blame

  • Rich12/09/2009 at 20:45

It certainly true Jenson is struggling to get the cars/tyres to his liking but I think he is tenser than before. I don't think he is making mistakes as such just not driving as fluently or naturally as before

They are really small mistakes compared to what other drivers make. The tyres issue of Jenson is the same issue that Nick has because they have a similar driving style.

    Evening

Qually post is late because I just watched Gran Torino and talked to the olds. Am responding to another post on a forum that is sadly much more bitter and nasty than here (but I seem to be the only person who thinks so) then I will finish it...

Yea - if you have lots of money there is nothing wrong with a Macbook, I bought a very cheap netbook MSI Wind and it works really well with a good Linux installed.

I say that, as having a reasonable discussion on there is unheard of.

Of course, but then I am biased. You have an Apple Store nearby, go and have a look. Talk to me before making a purchase though ;)

  • Steven Roy12/09/2009 at 20:51

Yea and Nelson Piquet was British F3 champion at some ridiculously young age. Schumacher in lower series was not particularly impressive, Frentzen was. McNish is an amazing sportscar driver but in F1 in the Toyota there was not enough evidence of him making the F1 grade - it is hard but those are the facts. I would have given both Toyota drivers more time - but that's history.

He was 32. Drivers have to maintain career momentum or they don't succeed. It was ten years since he last raced a competitive single seater. There are some things you can read from junior formula performance and some things you can't. Every time McNish got in a new car he was immediately fast and faster than anyone else.

McNish's career turned round when he got a guest drive in the Porsche race supporting the British GP. All sorts of people had guest drives in that class and no-one regardless of their status had achieved anything. McNish had one shot and was so impressive Porsche signed him up for their sports car team. He won Le Mans. you only have to listen to how anyone in sportscar racing talks about him to know he is by far the best driver in sportscars. Listen to the guy who runs Peugeot every time McNish does something impossible.

McNish should have spent his 20s and 30s giving Schumacher grief.

Not really - Mac OSX is amazingly stable and if that is so important you could make a case, otherwise no.

That is not completely true or fair - Tom Christensen was absolutely outstanding in the night driving at LeMans - I agree he is very good in sportscars - but he did not dominate over Salo when they were F1 teammates and Salo was not rated that highly rated as an F1 driver.

McNish is better than Kristensen. Kristensen has a fabulous record at Le Mans but he is not as good as McNish.

Had McNish arrived in F1 in his early 20s things would have been very different. He lost too much time before he got there and unfortunately I can see the same happening to di Resta

Indeed. But all the British journalists ignored his merciless chase of the Peugeots and just said that McNish won it!

Bitter? Just a little! Having said that - after McNish crashed on the parade lap of Petit Le Mans last year, he more than made up for it by coming back from a big deficit to win!

And he didn't do that good when he drove for Toyota

And he takes the credit for wins when Kristensen drives with him ;)

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)12/09/2009 at 21:17

    ...and video.

    Noooooooooooo!

    ahh nostalgia.

Nostalgia ain't what it used to be!

  • Andy Taylor12/09/2009 at 21:17

Silver finish with black keyboard is not a bad option.

All the new Macbook Pros and the Air have this setup, plus they are all backlit as well, which is a really useful feature if like me you like typing in the dark :)

  • Rich12/09/2009 at 21:17

    He's really short.

And in his entire season of 17 races with Toyota he did not score any points but his team mate did! Both he and his team mate got fired at the end of the 2002 season.

morning, everyone. goodness knows why i'm up this early...

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)12/09/2009 at 21:17

So I'm listening to this Radio 1 thing from Monday. I'm amazed at how restrained Lukeh actually was. And I'm still early in, where he played the same song twice in a row (I really like it).

Trust me, Lukeh was NOT restrained. But it was fun to see :D

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)12/09/2009 at 21:18

That's what I have on my Macbook Pro. Mr C has more of a pink tinge on his.

Silver finish with black keyboard is not a bad option. Avoid the very shiny finish like on some netbooks - that is why my MSI Wind netbook is Silver with black keys. see http://twitpic.com/g6s21

    Is that you Rich?

Yeah, but the app itself it magic.

I was really sceptical about it - most official stuff that Bernie's done has been well....pap. It was SPC tweeting about it that made me investigate.

One of my favourite apps - the Live timing in the pub this afternoon for Qualli was a life-saver.

Question - when buying tickets for Autosport International (thinking about it atm), they only give you a choice of selecting either Saturday or Sunday but not both. So does this mean you need 2 tickets, or can you use a paddock pass for both days?

It was before that one - although that one is a goodie.

Thought about doing an App for my blog (as a learining exercise), but I'm so busy with work and charging between my home in Poole and anywhere between Milton Keynes, Farnborough and Canary Wharf it's suffered a lot over the last few months.

Wouldn't want to have to commit to an app on top of the blog!

  • Pat W12/09/2009 at 21:31

A friend of mine wants to set up a podcast. He has been watching TWiT and Hak5 and wants one of his own. I'm not quite clear what he's going to do with it. He's just got a Twitter a/c, and is coming over tomorrow so I will show him Doohickey. :-)

If previous years are anything to go by, you'll need a separate ticket for each day you want to visit. Quite how you can prolong the event for two days though...

You could look out for the promo codes that are available nearer the time. I found a 2-for-1 code last year. Still overpriced mind.

There isn't one, because the group is private. This used to be OK, but now has become a slagging match. I have been called soft for asking the tone to be nicer and when I suggested people were leaving because of this, I was just attacked and called mental, rabid, stupid, soft etc.

The name calling is fine, I used to get bullied so I can deal with that, but when people just attack each other for no reason it sucks and you can't be bothered anymore.

Think back to the stuff about Renault that you didn't like yesterday, and multiply by 100. And supposedly people are happy with this?

  • RG12/09/2009 at 21:42

tis okay. in my opinion some people have gone ott in the past 4 or 5 days on the renault thing, but i don't think you guys were one of them.

i intend to do a post about it in the coming days. i suspect doohickey is mostly to blame because it feels like a chat session, and people forget that everything they say will be archived and searchable forever.

even if we delete sidepodcast.com, the waybac machine won't forget. ever.

it's also worth remembering the f1 teams do read these comments. not directly, but things like google alerts will forward on any comment to them when keywords trip the trigger.

I tend to wander around the F1 bit, the Le Mans bits and the main stage when interesting people are on - and do the live show, and the auction stand can have some interesting stuff.

I skip the karting bit, oval bit, the chavvy aftermarket bit, and get annoyed at all the people getting in the way!

tis okay. in my opinion some people have gone ott in the past 4 or 5 days on the renault thing, but i don't think you guys were one of them.

I do worry a lot about this though because I am a very passionate person and I love a good argument, and my humour is a bit 'edgy' sometimes. I know that you are quick to tell me and/or delete the comment if it's too much, but I try as hard as possible not to cross the line of course ;)

Being in the UK, and FOM being in the UK, Bernie obviously decided the best place for the court case was California.. meaning they couldn't afford to go over and defend it.. so they sold.

Yeah, but you've also got Defoe. We had him on loan from West Ham when he was 18. Just the best player we've ever been lucky enough to have on loan.

18 goals in 29 games, including a world record equalling 10 goals in 10 games. One of which was a nutmeg and chip from the halfway line against Swansea. *Wipes a tear from the eye*

I'd heard that it was necessary to batten down the hatches somewhat at Monza, but that's ridiculous :(

As for eating the middle of the bread but not the crusts, haven't these thieves heard of a nutritionally balanced diet?

    Red Bull gives you wings?

  • Alianora La Canta12/09/2009 at 23:21

    We have concluded that Adrian has hair products (inc hairdryer) in his helmet. His hair still looks immaculate! {Comment #309}

How does one operate a hair dryer underneath a helmet and is this why he's not on pole?

  • lou12/09/2009 at 23:21

@christine... would you believe me if i said these were Rob's hands?... even though they may or may not actually look like them? ;)

  • Scott Woodwiss12/09/2009 at 23:21

Maybe his helmet is a hairdryer. Like one of these: http://bit.ly/1lPDyP

    93 bottles of Watermelon Breezer in Sutil’s {Comment #374}

Other predictions for Sutil's fuel load on Twitter that I've spotted include beer and gummy bears. Do I detect a certain amount of scepticism in the paddock about his fuel load?

  • Alianora La Canta12/09/2009 at 23:50

    I haven’t seen quali yet but I’m going with they all have some fuel onboard {Comment #375}

Er... ...yes, that was a fairly safe prediction ;)

  • Alianora La Canta12/09/2009 at 23:51

    #eddstraw: Monza has now gone the way of Atlantis and is under the newly_formed Milanese Sea {Comment #380}

If that happens in the race we may have a problem. Hope Zuber's new helmet featured a snorkel...

  • Alianora La Canta13/09/2009 at 00:08

    I hate a world where someone’s (alleged) sexuality can be used as a weapon. {Comment #591}

Me too. I'm trying as hard as I can to forget that Flavio ever opened his foolish mouth on this particular topic. As methods for invalidating Flavio's argument go, that is very high up the list, since it is not only exceptionally rude and clearly designed to hurt, but is apropos of nothing with regard to the original question (why did Nelson crash in Singapore 2008?)

  • Alianora La Canta13/09/2009 at 00:18

    Remote viewing? He’s not here. Late call owing to illness in the family, I’m afraid. {Comment #661}

Sorry to hear that's why James Allen can't come to Monza. Best wishes to him and his family.

  • Alianora La Canta13/09/2009 at 00:38

    no.. not together. i tend to have orange juice or a smoothie or some juice before coverage (parade lap and bbc coverage) then some diet coke or some fizzy drink during the race :) that’s just what we do :P {Comment #770}

I have orange and lemon squash throughout.

I was surprised at how quickly they deployed

same here. they don’t look too big neither. i was expecting them to be bigger than a standard aircraft’s because of the landing speeds.

Why? A Jet plane and Space Shuttle have roughly the same landing speeds but the jet plane has the higher ground speeds due to the take-off run.... About 180 on rotation and 200 at start of climb. Long as you get the wheels up by 300 you shoul dnot have any parts get snapped off.
