Here we are then, it is Friday, it is Monza, and it is Free Practice day. The racing action gets underway once more, and as ever, we'll be live commenting every session. I hope you can join us throughout the day. Meanwhile, here are some of the things that have caught our attention:

  • Twitpic is providing some real insight into what life is like at Monza right now, with Barrichello walking the track and taking pictures as he goes. Radio 5live have given us a peek inside the commentary box - which for now is nice and dry. Last year they were washed out!
  • A bit of humour to lighten up your day, Grand Prix Diary presents the F1 Lonely Hearts Column. It's a lonely business, travelling the world and giving it your all at the circuit every fortnight. Takes a special kind of partner to put up with that.
  • Finally, Renault have been talking about their Thursday in Magical Monza. It's funny if only because they just aren't talking about it. On that subject, Stuart had a couple of good insights from the paddock itself, about the Alonso interview, and the general feeling in the paddock.

That'll do it for now. Remember to keep your Sidepodradio submissions coming in (it's the deadline today, assuming the voicemail is still working). I'll see you in the comments.

yeah what I mentioned earlier...those curbs are freakin giant. 1) suspension failure 2) double-decker F1 cars.

odds on one of the other this weekend? about 3-1

  • Jeffw, formerly gravit8ed10/09/2009 at 23:13

    ohh audio alerts too. Nice.

Def. going to have to set up my other PC for this weekend. Got my streams in order, my live timing sites (all 3 of them) and spc. media. overload.

  • Nick10/09/2009 at 23:19

On the Pk in singapore thing... even if he did suggest it, Doesn't Flavs decision to not only keep him on for the rest of the season, but to renew his deal shows a certain level of approval of his actions?

Remember we are still looking for voicemail contributions to sidepodradio. Check the wiki http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Sidepodradio and click throuh the chow links. Find a show or 6 you want to contribute to and call sidepodcast on skype or 0121 28 87225 if you are in the UK or +44 121 28 87225 if you are not. Alternatively go to http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ and download audacity and record your message and e-mail it to christine at sidepodcast dot com. Believe me it is easy. I just did it. Remember to download the LAME download as well as audacity as this lets you export as an mp3.

Everyone needs to make a contribution to sidepodradio. Don't worry of you don't like the sound of your voice. No-one does.

Imagine yourself on sidepodradio Sunday listening and wishing you had contributed. Then it may be too late. Now you can still get involved.

If only I had a simple mic at my disposal. I guess I could record on my cheap cell phone, send it to my email, re-record onto audaciy, and then fire it off...

    umm, maybe not.

You will end up buy a headset. We all did. Once the next series of sidepodpanel starts you are going to want to be on a show. They are too much fun not to be involved.

I turns out my laptop has an inbuilt mic. If next week is not too late, I will try to contribute a bit more.

Unless you can get access to skype it is going to be too expensive to call from there.

The official deadline is today Friday but I am sure we can take a few late voicemails.

We also have a show slot available if anyone has any good ideas. Otherwise the current plan is you get more of me and no-one wants that

  • Jeffw, formerly gravit8ed10/09/2009 at 23:29

I know, I'm only making excuses. lame! Soon enough, though, I finally managed to snag a decent job so I can upgrade my woefully outdated hardware.

And get my own net. this wireless fails at every absolute worst moment.

As usual I have left things far too late. Work today, then off for the weekend. I'll see where things stand when I get back.

  • Jeffw, formerly gravit8ed10/09/2009 at 23:33

So what's the hottest topic around here for the weekend? I've been trying to drop in every couple of hours and catch up but...well, that isnt very enlightening.

Fisi for the win? Taking bets, odds are 20-1

  • Jeffw, formerly gravit8ed10/09/2009 at 23:37

mmmm k. I suppose it'll get a bit more lively around here in about 6 hours. I'm gonna see if I can conjure up a decent idea for a show. and a mic.

    You saying I'm odd?!?

  • Pat W10/09/2009 at 23:59

What are everyone's plans for Friday, just the usual?

I am going to look at a flat in town straight after work. I'm excited because it looks quite big for the money, in a good location, and I can afford it.

I'm currently in a little place arranged as a favour to my stepdad, it means going through somebody's house to get to it and it is out in the suburbs which is boring and dead. On the plus side it enabled me to clear all my debts and upgrade my car. Time to move on.

I have already started scouting the Ikea website :-)

  • Steven Roy10/09/2009 at 23:59

So what's the hottest topic around here for the weekend? I've been trying to drop in every couple of hours and catch up but...well, that isnt very enlightening.

Seems to be the Renault nonsense. Stuart left a comment from the Monza press room. Alonso was in a group interview and let slip that his plans for next year would not change even if Renault are not in F1. Unfortunately someone who wasn't listening properly interrupted before he could say any more

  • me11/09/2009 at 00:00

There will be no space shuttle landing tonight due to dodgy weather.

You're making my 10hr sessions on Mario Kart look bad.

The most depressing thing i have ever discovered is that it gets dark mid afternnon in this county in the winter.

The concept of days being different lengths never occurred to me untill that point... :(

Cricket give away free tickets... Am i begining to sense people being tempted?

If I were in or close to London I would be tempted. I've never seen cricket live and quali can be watched in the evening/morning.

Dont worry its not till saturday...

Its about 8hrs to NY so i guess 9-10 to florida

  • Pat W11/09/2009 at 00:28

You're making my 10hr sessions on Mario Kart look bad.

I should say that was only a couple of times when I was truly hooked on completing every class to Gold. And there was a lot of Mario World thrown in, and my neighbour and/or sister were heavily involved.

  • JeffW11/09/2009 at 00:28

I'm actually looking forward to the practice session this week. Should be some good stuff going on.

well, I hope so any ways

  • Nick11/09/2009 at 00:29

If I were in or close to London I would be tempted. I've never seen cricket live and quali can be watched in the evening/morning.

Even better i can have the f1 on my phone so we can watch both!

Its a huge match! when are you going to get the chance again!

  • Pat W11/09/2009 at 00:29

The most depressing thing i have ever discovered is that it gets dark mid afternnon in this county in the winter.

Sucks doesn't it. I could even put up with the cold, just, if wasn't dark when I leave for work and dark when I get home.

  • JeffW11/09/2009 at 00:30

Even better i can have the f1 on my phone so we can watch both!

okay this is really too much. Two sports at once? One of them live? I really must get a new phone

  • JeffW11/09/2009 at 00:31

although I'd rather see the F1 live...

  • Pat W11/09/2009 at 00:31

Even better i can have the f1 on my phone so we can watch both!

I wasn't sure I was aware iplayer is available on a phone

  • jackie/saltire11/09/2009 at 00:31

Night guys and any gals lurking. It's time for bed.

  • JeffW11/09/2009 at 00:32

    MONZA MONZA MONZA!

If ever there was a track where a spectator might impact the race, it would be Monza.

  • Nick11/09/2009 at 00:32

although I'd rather see the F1 live...

unfortunately the cricket is on Pay tv, and although i do have an online subscription Silverlight doesnt work on android (yet) so this way round is the only option ;)

  • Pat W11/09/2009 at 00:32

Night guys and any gals lurking. It's time for bed.

Night Jackie - same for me.

Last night's early one means I feel like staying up but I had better not, I've been cutting it close on turning up on time all week.

  • Nick11/09/2009 at 00:32

Man its about time for me to ditch my $10 phone. does the job but...meh

  • Nick11/09/2009 at 00:33

I wasn't sure I was aware iplayer is available on a phone

It sure is.... although bizarrely i can watch the f1 on bbc 1, i cant listen to 5live in case there is a sporting event on which they dont have the rights to broadcast to phones?

Sure beats an f1 app anyway :P

  • JeffW11/09/2009 at 00:34

Good night. Hope to see everyone this weekend eh?

  • Steven Roy11/09/2009 at 00:34

    Night Jackie

Yup fp1 in just a few hours...

Just realised the NFL season is starting so i really should watch!

Night Pat, are you tempted by the cricket?

If you are you better speak up because steven is itching to come down to watch the game! :D

  • JeffW11/09/2009 at 00:36

Just realised the NFL season is starting so i really should watch!

Not you too? If some city decided to spend half as much as they spend on supporting an NFL team we'd have no shortage of willing venues for an American F1 race. Sad, really.

  • Pat W11/09/2009 at 00:36

Night Pat, are you tempted by the cricket?

yeah but can't, too far and i'd need hotel

  • Nick11/09/2009 at 00:38

yeah but can't, too far and i'd need hotel

    No worries,

Anyone else i can rope in?

  • Steven Roy11/09/2009 at 00:40

If you are you better speak up because steven is itching to come down to watch the game! :D

    Cricket? Not for me.

  • JeffW11/09/2009 at 00:40

So steven whens the next possible landing window for the shuttle? Think I'll be able to watch in person if its down at Kennedy

  • Nick11/09/2009 at 00:41

    Cricket? Not for me.

Are you sure you cant be tempted?

Not you too? If some city decided to spend half as much as they spend on supporting an NFL team we'd have no shortage of willing venues for an American F1 race. Sad, really.

I just find the way American sports are set up very odd. Clubs having their stadium paid for by the city and sharing merchandise sales equally with other clubs an the communist draft process. Very odd for what is supposed to be the most capitalist country in the world.

  • JeffW11/09/2009 at 00:42

Are you sure you cant be tempted?

surely you could find a cute lady friend to offer to? I mean, its cricket, after all, who wouldnt want to go?

  • Alison11/09/2009 at 00:43

Hello! I'm so excited about my lego adventure. I can't sleep, i'm so excited

  • Steven Roy11/09/2009 at 00:43

So steven whens the next possible landing window for the shuttle? Think I'll be able to watch in person if its down at Kennedy

No times yet but they say Friday looks good. There are two windows at Kennedy and 2 at Edwards.

Keep an eye on http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/shuttle/main/index.html as it will have the first notification of the time

  • JeffW11/09/2009 at 00:44

dont get me started. capitalism has nothing to do with it, unless you count money as a direct result of capitalism

  • Steven Roy11/09/2009 at 00:44

Are you sure you cant be tempted?

Not if I was hit over the head with a cricket racquet

  • Steven Roy11/09/2009 at 00:44

You are still with us? Have you been to see the lego yet?

  • Steven Roy11/09/2009 at 00:45

dont get me started. capitalism has nothing to do with it, unless you count money as a direct result of capitalism

I love the NFL and MLB but the whole set up is weird. Why are the Yankees not able to fund their oen stadium with the money they make?

  • JeffW11/09/2009 at 00:46

It's all about money and politics, really, which is odd; F1 is exactly about that, so I cant fathom why it isn't more popular over here, except that the major sports leagues here already have such a tight grip on the cash flow of most major cities...

  • JeffW11/09/2009 at 00:47

I love the NFL and MLB but the whole set up is weird. Why are the Yankees not able to fund their oen stadium with the money they make?

Its sorta the same way they push for gvt funding of F1 in other countries - they say it boosts spending, gives a foundation for a stable economy, jobs, whatever. Its BS, really, when you look at it, because all this money just goes straight out of town at the first chance

  • JeffW11/09/2009 at 00:48

They built this ginormous stadium here in Jacksonville for the Jaguars when they hosted the super bowl a few years ago, and most of the infrastructure sits idle all but two days a year now, if not all of them

  • JeffW11/09/2009 at 00:51

Funny thing is, I've driven around the stadium a lot at...well, higher than allowed speeds, on smooth as silk service roads, and the entire area for blocks is just empty parking and really nice streets and some old warehouses right on the river that could easily be used for, I dunno, a nice paddock...

  • JeffW11/09/2009 at 00:52

omg itunes on random stumbles onto 'feelings' by Morris Albert circa 1975.

The problem with having 21,000+ tracks is you never know what you really have until you listen.

  • JeffW11/09/2009 at 00:58

Okay I'm really not trying to threadjack, here.

Dont your cites/gubments shell out $$ to support your local cricket/soccer teams?

  • Steven Roy11/09/2009 at 00:59

Dont your cites/gubments shell out $$ to support your local cricket/soccer teams?

No. If the clubs want a stadium they pay for it. There are things like lottery grants but only for a small percentage

  • Steven Roy11/09/2009 at 01:01

Dont your cites/gubments shell out $$ to support your local cricket/soccer teams?

Our sports are entirely capitalist. Clubs don't share merchandising rights etc. If one team sells more kit they get more money. They only get money from the kit with their name on it.

If clubs want young players they go and compete to sign them. There is nothing like the draft.

  • Nick11/09/2009 at 01:01

Dont your cites/gubments shell out $$ to support your local cricket/soccer teams?

Not really... If they build something they might try to offload it to a sports team.

In manchester, the city of manchester stadium was built for the commonwealth games, but then was partialy rebuilt so a soccer team could take residence...

They are trying to offload the 2012 olympic stadium onto a sports team, but noone wants it...

The swalec stadium in cardiff was partially funded by the welsh government, but that's an exception rather than a rule...

  • JeffW11/09/2009 at 01:01

I saw a piece on the new stadium in Barcelona the other day, the one with the lights on the top of the dome, said they paid a couple hundred million from the city for that one.

    of course, thats spain...

  • Nick11/09/2009 at 01:05

Alianora... Do you know any details of Max's whistleblower protection programme?

  • JeffW11/09/2009 at 01:05

    hmmm.

So I guess you could say Bernie is trying to make American capitalism more popular, then, because all the teams share the money FOM rakes in based on points.

Confusing. I do like the idea that these freakin sports teams should pay their own bills, though. Last year my brother got some free tickets that would have cost roughly $200 apiece for a game against...Cleveland, I think it was.

  • JeffW11/09/2009 at 01:07

Alianora... Do you know any details of Max's whistleblower protection programme?

Well since everyone knows it was p-k nobody would dare retaliate, would they? I mean, if he dies suspiciously all eyes would turn to Flabio right?

  • Nick11/09/2009 at 01:07

So I guess you could say Bernie is trying to make American capitalism more popular, then, because all the teams share the money FOM rakes in based on points.

True, but they sell there own car advertising, do there own merchandising, and are free to make as much money out of that as they like.

Even over here tv money is sold collectively by the league and the profits distributed...

  • Nick11/09/2009 at 01:07

Well since everyone knows it was p-k nobody would dare retaliate, would they? I mean, if he dies suspiciously all eyes would turn to Flabio right?

hehe, i meant RE: punishment from the FIA

  • Steven Roy11/09/2009 at 01:09

Even over here tv money is sold collectively by the league and the profits distributed...

Rangers and Celtic in Scotland are looking at doing their own TV deal.

  • JeffW11/09/2009 at 01:09

Even over here tv money is sold collectively by the league and the profits distributed...

Its not too much different over here, I mean the teams sell licenses to make 'official' merchandise, and they each get their own cut along those lines, as far as I know. It's just that they get huge tax writeoffs and massive stadiums on the american taxpayer dime. And then sell ridiculously overpriced seats in the nosebleed sections.

  • JeffW11/09/2009 at 01:12

hehe, i meant RE: punishment from the FIA

Okay I'm confused as its generally known the the pk familia are good friends with max, so are you asking what the punishment would be to jr or to renault?

  • Nick11/09/2009 at 01:18

Okay I'm confused as its generally known the the pk familia are good friends with max, so are you asking what the punishment would be to jr or to renault?

In theory crashing deleiberatly to influence the result is against the rules... if he hadnt told the fia and they found out on there own they would punish him.

Since he confessed i asume he has a degree of protection from penalty.

I belive there is an official immunity programme for whistle blowers, i am not sure what it is, but Alianora is good at knowing this sort of stuff ;)

  • JeffW11/09/2009 at 01:20

Yeah thats what i thought you were getting at.

p-k is done for, in the end, because he was at the wheel and ultimately made the choice (or, didn't, but he's admitted already if you believe the report floating around). So protection is nice and all, but the fine would rest on the team for something like this, because others participated in the event in one way or another

  • Amy11/09/2009 at 01:24

just realised i can get kfc between sessions. Phew, for a moment there i thought i might have to leave my house on a saturday.

So, uhh, do you go for that weird chicken sammich without a bun thing or do you go for the bowl'o'grease package?

  • Nick11/09/2009 at 01:28

So, uhh, do you go for that weird chicken sammich without a bun thing or do you go for the bowl'o'grease package?

Hehe, outside North America KFC do burgers instead of sammiches!

  • JeffW11/09/2009 at 01:30

Surely they offer you the same stuff they have over here.

The bowl is potatoes, corn, some gravy, and chicken nuggets all in the same container (like a shipwreck or whatever you guys mash all together over that way).

The sammich thing is like two pieces of chicken with the contents of the bowl inbetween. You eat it like a burger. Sort of. More like a big trucker eats a small animal, really, but you've got to visit the south to know what I'm talking about.

  • Nick11/09/2009 at 01:32

Surely they offer you the same stuff they have over here.

This may blow your mind ;)

Aha, thanks Alianora (from yesterday's daily)

He's guaranteed anonymity and $1m. He's not automatically guaranteed a free pass.

Of course, leaks tend to mean no anonymity either, but it's the thought that counts (according to wishful thinking...)

    Mmm... Yum!

Mostly the same menu over here, but our fast food places delight in coming up with the worst possible combinations (I'm talking healthwise, sometimes the stuff is dang tasty).

Sad thing is none of them are open really late when you're actually willing to stuff your face with it. Except Krystal (blargh)

  • Amy11/09/2009 at 01:40

if i could get a double down i would but australia has not stooped that low yet. They also stopped selling the bowl because sales were dismal. It wont taste better on saturday because the effort in leaving my house would make it taste bad. If they delivered my life would be complete.

  • Nick11/09/2009 at 01:41

The effort of leaving would make it worth while, and taste better though... and think of all the friendly AFL people you could meet on the streets! :D

  • Nick11/09/2009 at 01:44

Just seen a field goal blocked in the NFL...

I think that's the first time i have actually seen it happen

I watched in amazement the other night as the local team pitched the ball back more than a dozen times on the last play of the game. Like a car accident, I just couldn't look away.

  • JeffW11/09/2009 at 01:47

Hehe, i am exactly the same, but i suppose jumping in a car and heading to the drive thru is less effort. Even when its freezing cold and i cant wear shorts...

I still maintain it tastes better on saturday and sunday though... they put magic weekend dust on it all! :P

  • Nick11/09/2009 at 02:02

Sutil has praised PKs driving ability!

..ok its crashing, but the guy made it look good!

  • Journeyer11/09/2009 at 02:10

    Morning, everyone.

Asked if the Singapore situation had affected his plans for next year, he said:

    “No. No change.”

    Next question:

“Even if Renault aren’t in F1 next year?”

    His response (mumbled):

    “No.”

SCOOP! Good job, Stuart! :D That said, it doesn't really say Renault won't be around, but it seems to be pointing in that direction...

Also, the way Alonso seems to be angry about it tells me he really had no idea what happened. I could be wrong, but that's what this is telling me.

We probably haven’t heard the last of it – or seen the half of it – yet. Lots of very disillusioned people around. General feeling is that the new teams coming in next year will be essential in sweeping away the malaise.

If Flav is implicated, that means he can't take over Renault himself either. It puts the entire Enstone operation at risk.

  • Amy11/09/2009 at 02:13

oh if i had a car id be all over it on saturday but walking, no.

  • Nick11/09/2009 at 02:16

    Morning!

If Flav is implicated, that means he can't take over Renault himself either. It puts the entire Enstone operation at risk.

Indeed... and their are plenty of teams lining up for a go.

We could have lotus-litespeed and epsilon both in next year...not to mention prodrive, lola n-tech and somone resurecting BMW or renault...

    Crazy times!

  • Nick11/09/2009 at 02:16

oh if i had a car id be all over it on saturday but walking, no.

    Tram?

  • Journeyer11/09/2009 at 02:17

We could have lotus-litespeed and epsilon both in next year...not to mention prodrive, lola n-tech and somone resurecting BMW or renault...

Indeed, Epsilon could buy out Renault's spot (which would be a shame - after all, Benetton/Renault managed to win multiple championships).

    Prodrive might buy out FIF1.

    Lotus might buy out BMW.

    Plus the 3 new teams.

All of a sudden, we have... FIVE new teams!

  • Nick11/09/2009 at 02:18

Also, the way Alonso seems to be angry about it tells me he really had no idea what happened. I could be wrong, but that's what this is telling me.

He could also be annoyed his team have been found ou and people think he got a win he didnt deserve.

I like alonso, but i think i like to hate him more... its dilemma-ish

I still think he must have known, maybe not the details, but that strategy was so strange...

  • Nick11/09/2009 at 02:19

All of a sudden, we have... FIVE new teams!

    That would be 6 :P

    But yes! the times they-are-a-changing!

  • Journeyer11/09/2009 at 02:20

    That would be 6 :P

Oops. Hehehe. 6 out of 13 new teams - that's almost half!

    They better not start collapsing...

  • Nick11/09/2009 at 02:21

    They better not start collapsing...

If they can get themselves into f1 in this climate... then they should be ok...

still its a lot of new sponsors needed for next year...

  • Amy11/09/2009 at 02:23

Have you considered Hungry Jacks? :P

just make sure one of them is heikki koval-onion.

  • Nick11/09/2009 at 02:49

Standard article on the PK affair in the times...

Oh but it ends with fireworks!

=> Flav met with Renault yesterday to discuss the matter and his future is in doubt

=> PK (jnr) Told Bernie about it at Monaco..... Apparently he deny's trying to get him to do flav over... but said "either do it or stop talking about it"

  • Nick11/09/2009 at 02:50

    PK (jnr)

There should have been a question mark there, i am not sure if it was Junior or Senior

  • Nick11/09/2009 at 02:50

just make sure one of them is heikki koval-onion.

Oh-no! I will never be able to look at him the same again!

There is an article I saw (albeit with Google Translate) suggesting that Ghosn is siding with Flav and they may jointly sue Piquet.

As for BE, he had a point - don't just talk about it, do it. And that's what he did. Mind you, from the looks of it, Bernie believes him...

  • Steven Roy11/09/2009 at 02:55

Oh but it ends with fireworks!

However, Briatore and Symonds are thought to have strenuously disputed Piquet’s account in their evidence to the FIA and claim it was the Brazilian, not them, who suggested a deliberate crash and that, in any case, the matter went no farther than a discussion of it as a possibility.

The matter went no farther than a discussion of it as a possibility.........then it happened. Surely that is taking it a stage farther.

“At no time did I tell him to **** Flavio,” Ecclestone said last night. “He said he was going to do it and I simply said, ‘There is no use you saying you are going to do something — either do it or stop talking about it.’ To be honest, I genuinely believed at that time that he would not do it.”

So Bernie knew about it and said nothing. Nice.

  • Steven Roy11/09/2009 at 02:57

There is an article I saw (albeit with Google Translate) suggesting that Ghosn is siding with Flav and they may jointly sue Piquet.

That would be difficult since Symonds seems to have said that the matter was discussed in a meeting at which Flav was present and Flav says it was never discussed. There are three witnesses to what happened in the room and two of them say the discussion took place although they don't agree about how it took place. How can Flav sue in that situation?

  • Journeyer11/09/2009 at 02:58

So Bernie knew about it and said nothing. Nice.

He wasn't gonna get involved in something that wasn't his own matter, was he? Besides, how would he know Piquet was telling the truth? I think it's right that he let Piquet blow the whistle.

  • Nick11/09/2009 at 02:58

There is an article I saw (albeit with Google Translate) suggesting that Ghosn is siding with Flav and they may jointly sue Piquet.

That would be interesting... I guess Ghosn's possition could come under question too, but if they go after PK it will be very difficult if they lose the WMSC case... and it could end his career

  • Steven Roy11/09/2009 at 02:59

He wasn't gonna get involved in something that wasn't his own matter, was he? Besides, how would he know Piquet was telling the truth? I think it's right that he let Piquet blow the whistle.

I think Bernie should have asked the FIA to investigate.

  • Journeyer11/09/2009 at 02:59

Good question. But if they could prove they didn't order Piquet to crash, they could sue Piquet for implicating them...

  • Nick11/09/2009 at 02:59

So Bernie knew about it and said nothing. Nice.

    It doesnt look good...

I assume he will be asked about it on tv this weekend... his response will be interesting!

  • Steven Roy11/09/2009 at 03:00

That would be interesting... I guess Ghosn's possition could come under question too, but if they go after PK it will be very difficult if they lose the WMSC case... and it could end his career

Ghosn wasn't there. He will pull Renaut out of F1 if this decision goes against them.

  • Journeyer11/09/2009 at 03:00

    It doesnt look good...

I assume he will be asked about it on tv this weekend... his response will be interesting!

Nope, I don't think anyone else will bring it up with him, to be honest...

  • Journeyer11/09/2009 at 03:00

    That works too.

They didnt sack him, and they renewed his contract... that is as good as condoning what happened...

Good question. But if they could prove they didn't order Piquet to crash, they could sue Piquet for implicating them...

They have too... unless he hides away i am sure brundle will mention it on the gridwalk at least?

  • Steven Roy11/09/2009 at 03:01

They didnt sack him, and they renewed his contract... that is as good as condoning what happened...

And Piquet says his engineer questioned his data which I said would have been the case.

  • Journeyer11/09/2009 at 03:02

There were only three people in the discussion and therefore only three who can say what happened. 2 of them say it was discussed. Case closed

Discussed is different from ordered, the lawyers will tell you. Thing is, doesn't the burden of proof lie with the Piquets?

    Morning

well, but each of those two points the finger in different direction ....

regardless of that, it was apparently discussed.

If Renault leave though we will be left with just Ferrari and Mercedes engines from the current teams along with Toyota who have big question marks over them. Not discounting the new and apparently uncompetitive cosworths...

  • Nick11/09/2009 at 03:23

Well it would do if it was friday night, but i will content myself with FP1 in the morning :P

  • Paul11/09/2009 at 03:34

Discussed is different from ordered, the lawyers will tell you. Thing is, doesn't the burden of proof lie with the Piquets?

You have to remember this is no court of law. During the McLaren case, I saw a number of reports saying there was not a lot of actual proof of wrongdoing, although I guess McLaren pretty much admitted guilt.

Still, I wonder how much convincing needs to be done for the WMSC to act.

  • Nick11/09/2009 at 03:35

Another option for renault would be to rebadge the team as Nissan and bring in new management...

  • F1Wolf11/09/2009 at 03:41

You have to remember this is no court of law. During the McLaren case, I saw a number of reports saying there was not a lot of actual proof of wrongdoing, although I guess McLaren pretty much admitted guilt.

I believe that in McLaren case FIA and Mosley were very sure that no matter what fine they hand the team, McLaren will go on racing in F1. it is different now, guilty verdict may and likely will result in Renault pulling out. therefore I think that FIA may want to see serious evidence before coming up with guilty verdict. On the other hand they surely do not want to be seen as sweeping such a serious matter under the rug. Can they close the matter in one 2 hours long WMSC meeting like they did in McLaren case ?

  • Paul11/09/2009 at 03:44

Can they close the matter in one 2 hours long WMSC meeting like they did in McLaren case ?

I think that is the problem with the way both Mclaren incidents were handled. They have set a serious precedent, that when something comes up they deal with it harshly. If they don't then surely there is evidence of bias and favoritism

  • JeffW11/09/2009 at 04:14

Yeah I'm not sure I'm buying it though. I've been bouncing around through a bunch of sites and their comments/forums and it seems the general feeling is that this isn't the real statement.

OTOH, if it is, then theres a lot of finger pointing going down and not much else at this stage. Too bad the hearing isnt for another couple of weeks.

  • JeffW11/09/2009 at 04:42

Oh man there is way too much going on in that report...nothing we havent already speculated about, like the day we heard that the FIA was investigating 'an incident'.

To be a fly on the wall of the Renault/ING trailer in Singapore last year eh?

  • JeffW11/09/2009 at 05:00

Fairly decent Massa interview in the guardian. If I didn't know a family from Sao Paulo I'd have misread some of his statements - theres a strange inflection in Portuguese - but I'll be a monkeys uncle if he isnt 100% positive he'll win the title next year. That man has the biggest titanium danglies on this planet. I always did like him, even if he does drive for Ferrari.

I think it is - if Autosport journalists and Joe are carrying it, I say it's legit.

    Too true.

That's what they have Fisichella for. That said, Alonso completely crushed Fisi the first time - would a sequel be any different?

  • JeffW11/09/2009 at 06:17

WOW. I just read the post on axis of oversteer about the p-k/singapore crash. A defintie must read on this.

I no longer doubt the reports out are legit. The only thing left to figure out, really, seems to be the extent of Flabios (yes with a b) knowledge of the incident.

Otherwise p-k was setting up a pretty serious piece of blackmail, or whatever you'd call it. I dont think he's that...conniving, though. Then again, you'd probably learn some things in that garage...

  • JeffW11/09/2009 at 06:21

That's what they have Fisichella for. That said, Alonso completely crushed Fisi the first time - would a sequel be any different?

Well Fisi might have some better backing from the Italian team, and he'll have some time to get comfortable with the car/team before FA gets in, so maybe it'll work out different this time.

And yes, I'd enjoy watching FA get his butt handed to him. Something about him ruffles my feathers. Maybe it's the man-mane.

  • Paul11/09/2009 at 06:29

Otherwise p-k was setting up a pretty serious piece of blackmail,

I come back to this: If Piquet suggested the crash before the race, but it was not accepted my management, then went ahead and did it, Renault would have handed his butt to him on a platter. I know Ron Dennis or Ross Brawn sure would have, along with most of the team principals.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)11/09/2009 at 06:37

yeah I was starting to see funny purple swirls at one point, had to take a break for a minute. Word to you bloggers out there, black background w/white font is very dramatic, but makes for a dang hard read.

Renault would have handed his butt to him on a platter. I know Ron Dennis or Ross Brawn sure would have, along with most of the team principals.

I agree 100%, which is where the whole thing turns right back around to it being a team-ordered crash. And the way Symonds was hedging his answers (if thats the real transcripts on axis) is really more akin to someone asserting his 5th amendment rights...

okay, 5th amendment here (US) basically says you have the right to not incriminate yourself under questioning. The bit where the investigator offers to symonds that it would be much better if he was honest is pretty telling.

  • JeffW11/09/2009 at 06:50

    Thanks Journeyer.

OK - if that's real telemetry data then Piquet had to have mashed the throttle to cause a crash! There seems to be no other explanation for it...

  • JeffW11/09/2009 at 07:00

I've managed to d/l the entire race (it was from speedtv) and you can see p-k practice spin in the warm-up lap. This whole thing isn't leaving a whole lot to the imagination, and neither is the timing of the first report to the FIA and p-k subsequent badmouthing of flav.

This is going to get so very messy.

Did anone else pick up on the idea that somehow Bernie new about this? I think someone was saying something to that effect over at pitfanantic

  • JeffW11/09/2009 at 07:02

oh, and another write-up from Adam Cooper over at speed: http://formula-one.speedtv.com/article/cooper-the-singapore-2008-affair/ Seems to have gotten a heads up before spa.

Indeed. In particular, the telemetry traces are hard to fake. I checked the source of the PDF, racefax.com. It's a paid site, but it's been around in print for 21 years, and online for 12. Looks legit to me.

  • JeffW11/09/2009 at 07:45

So I guess the real question is, who much will we know by the time they have that hearing? In less than 2 weeks we've gone from rumors to some known facts with a lot of hearsay.

In 2 more weeks we could have audio recording of the conversation between pk, FB, and PS. With pictures.

....don't they have like security cameras on those haulers?

  • F1Wolf11/09/2009 at 07:56

will we be able to claim from them back our Singapore GP expenses ?

I should think so. I mean, that was several hours of my time I'll never get back, and I did feel pretty used at that point. Also, it gave my ex something to rub in, since she was an FA fan. Have I said how much I dislike the guy? Yes? Well, I really dont like FA.

from a historical point of view, if we ever look back, it would be good to read the daily and say... "a breakout story happened here".

It kinda feels like the daily is the base. When we're in the live commenting threads, at the end it's always: back to the daily.

It's like coming home, and when you get home, you want to see the post.

I've taken this analogy too far but you know what I mean.

So, I think I have mentioned before about being told off for always wearing black. I specifically went out and boughts a few tops in various colours and have debuted a pale green one today.

Turns out, my colleague is wearing the exact same colour and it looks like we are twins.

    Why did I bother??

    It's hard being a girl.

  • Jon Waldock11/09/2009 at 10:02

    How are we all today?

  • Alianora La Canta11/09/2009 at 10:03

So Bernie knew about it and said nothing. Nice.

This worries me. Might Bernie not be implicated in the case, and if so what exactly can the FIA do to penalise him given that he is the fulcrum of F1's finances?

Morning all, have just got a few emails back from a World Series by Renault driver and a Formula 2 driver about appearing on my show for an interview! Very exciting!

    Good job! :D

This worries me. Might Bernie not be implicated in the case, and if so what exactly can the FIA do to penalise him given that he is the fulcrum of F1’s finances?

    Simple - he won't.

By the way, it's my Mum's birthday today. I've offered to make her dinner as a present (which is more of a present than it may initially sound because Mum knows I lack confidence in the kitchen).

    What are you making?

  • James11/09/2009 at 10:16

Morning everyone, just got up to find I've missed FP1! :D

You made the effort and that is what matters ;)

  • Jon Waldock11/09/2009 at 10:18

    Good job! :D

The WSR driver is the guy in 2nd place, and the F2 driver is an english guy who has good prospects!

There's a relatively easy (albeit time-consuming) fix for this - get a cheap sewing kit and customise your own outfits. Little stitched details at the edges of clothing will automatically guarantee you'll never have quite the same outfit as anyone else and can generate a talking point.

It's a good idea in theory, but my sewing skills are limited to replacing buttons on things.

Plus, it's hard to sew when your hands are permanently glued to a keyboard and mouse.

I reckon if i talk slower i can get it to closer to 10, and theres a few features ive thought of too, so that will push it up aswell.

The hardest bit is writing them, i find it really hard to write about races so i have to rely on press releases as much as i do the footage ive seen

At uni we used to sit around hungover all of Saturday until about 6pm,n when it became clear noone was going to do the Mcdonalds run (it was about a 2 min walk away) so some sort of compromise was needed to avoid starvation...Then we would all go down there in dressing gowns and slippers...

Yes as good looking as a Ferrari - actually the new Ferrari has more design flair. I find it a bit boring on the styling part - been there done it lets do something else. I am sure it is nice car but the ground-breaking design the F1 was. This time they did not have access to the brilliance of Gordon Murray.

Ilmor still exists - they were the ones behind the aborted MotoGP project. But their F1 engine unit has indeed been taken over by Mercedes.

I have also read the book, have the video documentary - a quite incredible story. I like the bike, since it is a complete re-think of the motorcycle, virtually every aspect is original and surprisingly I even like the paint job and lines.

So the Britten is the greatest motorcycle ever built and I consider the McLaren F1 the greatest car ever built - it was complete re-think in design and was a performance icon that took more than a decade to beat.

You've not been drinking with me yet, sometimes you need both ;)

I firmly believe in the 'two hands two drinks' rule. People always laugh at me when I come back from the bar but hey, they're the fools who have twice the walking time.

probably not, you have to put your name down ages in advance and they only do a couple per year. Plus they only do them on weekends and I'm not planning on being in London for any of those :D

That will limit your oppertuities for sidepodpubbing... the race weekend will have to be twice as alcoholic!

"In any case whoever is leaking is taking some serious risks, although they may not be too worried as some members of the World Council will not be there once the elections have occurred – and thus they have very little to lose."

Am I right to assume he's fingering MM as the leaker of the reports then?

    #sidepodspace update

The deorbit burn for the first Kennedy Space Center, Florida landing opportunity is at 4:41 p.m., with landing at 5:48 p.m. The second Florida landing window begins with a deorbit burn at 6:17 p.m., and ends with a landing at 7:23 p.m.

The first landing opportunity for Edwards Air Force Base, California has a deorbit burn time of 7:47 p.m., with landing at 8:53 p.m. The second opportunity would start with a deorbit burn at 9:23 p.m., and end with a landing at 10:28 p.m.

All times are Eastern. Add 5 hours for UK. First landing slot is therefore 10:48pm UK.

It is a near certainty we will get a landing today as the weather at Edwards is almost always good.

    #sidepodradio

We still have an empty slot available if anyone has an idea for another show. You don't have to do the show just suggest something that someone else may fancy doing.

I am really keen to get something scheduled for that slot as the back up plan is that I have to do another show which no-one really wants as I am already doing 4 shows and reading the questions for the blogger interviews and have left comments and questions on a few other shows.

So you are not going to want to listen to another half hour of me especially as I have no material for the show so I will just be waffing away about whatever comes into my head at the time.

We have a lot of clever, knowledgeable and talented people here(Christibe said if I said that someone would volunteer) so one of you must have an idea for a show. I am going to keep plugging this till someone gives in so you may as well do so now.

We are also looking for contributions of questions/comments etc for a number of shows so visit the wiki and click on the show links to see where you can add something. http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Sidepodradio

If Mr C reappears maybe i can rope him in ;)

  • Steven Roy11/09/2009 at 18:34

Anyone want to do a cricket show on sidepodradio as analysis shows that there has been a lot of discussion of it in th comments recently?

  • Nick11/09/2009 at 18:34

Apparently a- go 'family go-karting' exists and b- cant get out of it :(

  • Bassano Clapper11/09/2009 at 18:34

We still have an empty slot available if anyone has an idea for another show. You don't have to do the show just suggest something that someone else may fancy doing.

What about a random phone-in on subjects suggested by the commenters at the time?

Someone has to host it but only to field the calls

  • Nick11/09/2009 at 18:35

Anyone want to do a cricket show on sidepodradio as analysis shows that there has been a lot of discussion of it in th comments recently?

    grrrr....

  • Bassano Clapper11/09/2009 at 18:35

If Mr C reappears maybe i can rope him in ;)

    During qualy

    Good luck

  • Bassano Clapper11/09/2009 at 18:35

Anyone want to do a cricket show on sidepodradio as analysis shows that there has been a lot of discussion of it in th comments recently?

    Mostly at it's expense

  • Nick11/09/2009 at 18:36

    During qualy

But he can watch it live on a phone!

    :P

.... I am all out of ideas...

  • Steven Roy11/09/2009 at 18:36

What about a random phone-in on subjects suggested by the commenters at the time?

We have an F1 phone in and Gavin is going to do a tech phone in but if someone can suggest some kind of categories to get it started it could work. And we need a host or two

  • Steven Roy11/09/2009 at 18:37

    grrrr....

I'll put you down as a probable

  • lou11/09/2009 at 18:37

okay.. i think i need some sidepodadvice as i've just discovered i have a bit of a problem... i've just found out the coldplay gig i'm going to next saturday at wembley stadium finishes around 11pm... and that the last train from charing cross is at 11:53pm.. i don't think we can get out of Wembley, onto the underground and to charing cross in 53minutes. so here comes the question.. what would you do in this situation? there is a 50% chance dad may be able to pick us up (all the other parents are busy).. or we try and find a hotel somewhere in london for the night... i'm not sure there is much else we can do is there?...

  • Nick11/09/2009 at 18:38

I'll put you down as a probable

i will do the showe if you are at Lords at 10:10 tomorrow morning ;)

  • Steven Roy11/09/2009 at 18:38

    Mostly at it's expense

The show can be about the cos of watching cricket and how can they justify the prices when clearly you can't gie the tickets away

  • Nick11/09/2009 at 18:38

Go clubbing untill the first train is my normal soloution ;)

  • lou11/09/2009 at 18:38

Hi Lou. Did you have a fun day at school?

no. i don't like migraines, but migraines at school are horrible... plus i've been trying to provide some support for a dear friend who has recently broken up with her boyfriend of 2 years... it's been one heck of a tough week..

  • Bassano Clapper11/09/2009 at 18:38

I want to see this film:

The Men Who Stares at Goats with Ewan McGregor and George Clooney

  • Bassano Clapper11/09/2009 at 18:39

no. i don't like migraines, but migraines at school are horrible... ..

Do you know what your migraine trigger is?

For some people it's a certain food

  • Steven Roy11/09/2009 at 18:40

i will do the showe if you are at Lords at 10:10 tomorrow morning ;)

Not unless my life depended on it and everyone on the planet agreed it was necessary. I cannot imagine anything more borig than cricket. I would rather watch beige paint dying and listening to the grass growing

  • Bassano Clapper11/09/2009 at 18:40

t... i'm not sure there is much else we can do is there?...

    Be very nice to Dad

  • Steven Roy11/09/2009 at 18:40

okay.. i think i need some sidepodadvice as i've just discovered i have a bit of a problem... i've just found out the coldplay gig i'm going to next saturday at wembley stadium finishes around 11pm... and that the last train from charing cross is at 11:53pm.. i don't think we can get out of Wembley, onto the underground and to charing cross in 53minutes. so here comes the question.. what would you do in this situation? there is a 50% chance dad may be able to pick us up (all the other parents are busy).. or we try and find a hotel somewhere in london for the night... i'm not sure there is much else we can do is there?...

When will you know if your dad can pick you up?

  • lou11/09/2009 at 18:41

Do you know what your migraine trigger is?

not a clue.. they usually happen when i've either had a very busy day - been in london and maybe not eaten enough, or if i'm really really stressed and run down - aka this week.

  • lou11/09/2009 at 18:41

When will you know if your dad can pick you up?

    when he gets home tonight....

  • Bassano Clapper11/09/2009 at 18:41

The show can be about the cos of watching cricket and how can they justify the prices when clearly you can't gie the tickets away

not a clue.. they usually happen when i've either had a very busy day - been in london and maybe not eaten enough, or if i'm really really stressed and run down - aka this week.

Remember the discussion we had about blood sugar and making sure you ate regulalrly?

  • Steven Roy11/09/2009 at 18:42

    when he gets home tonight....

I would wait until you have an answer for him before you worry about it

  • Bassano Clapper11/09/2009 at 18:44

okay.. i think i need some sidepodadvice as i've just discovered i have a bit of a problem... i've just found out the coldplay gig i'm going to next saturday at wembley stadium finishes around 11pm... and that the last train from charing cross is at 11:53pm.. i don't think we can get out of Wembley, onto the underground and to charing cross in 53minutes.

Getting to the station from the arena can take half an hour cos of the queues, if not more. Plus, you can't guarantee the last train won't be cancelled anyway.

I suggest getting a night bus from Charing Cross to somewhere nearer to home where your Dad can meet you or...

He picks you up frpom Wembley

  • Bassano Clapper11/09/2009 at 18:45

Remember the discussion we had about blood sugar and making sure you ate regulalrly?

I get really ratty if I don't eat

I don't know how people can do it

  • lou11/09/2009 at 18:46

Remember the discussion we had about blood sugar and making sure you ate regulalrly?

yeah... i've been eating lunch on the run this week during the mad five minutes between various meetings :(

  • Bassano Clapper11/09/2009 at 18:46

yeah... i've been eating lunch on the run this week during the mad five minutes between various meetings :(

No point in getting good grades and stuff if you're burnt out though

  • Steven Roy11/09/2009 at 18:46

I don't know how people can do it

Some days I can go all day and eat nothing. Other days I eat constantly.

  • Steven Roy11/09/2009 at 18:47

yeah... i've been eating lunch on the run this week during the mad five minutes between various meetings :(

You have to look after your health. It is more important than any meeting

  • lou11/09/2009 at 18:47

No point in getting good grades and stuff if you're burnt out though

they've been prefect meetings and things :( nothing to do with grades :(

  • lou11/09/2009 at 18:48

You have to look after your health. It is more important than any meeting

tell that to our head of sixth form who has been giving me more work than the head girl gets in a term this past week :(

  • Bassano Clapper11/09/2009 at 18:49

depends what unis, it's more important to do well in the exams then have a good 1 line on your personal statement

  • lou11/09/2009 at 18:50

Send him our way. We'll have words ;)

it's a she.. and she is evil...

  • Bassano Clapper11/09/2009 at 18:52

Good news: the Tolkien Family have settled their legal issue over The Hobbit. Enter stage left - Guillermo del Toro

    As you were, thank you

  • Bassano Clapper11/09/2009 at 18:53

it's a she.. and she is evil...

  • Steven Roy11/09/2009 at 18:54

tell that to our head of sixth form who has been giving me more work than the head girl gets in a term this past week :(

Everyone has someone who dumps on them. You have to prioritise. you can take all the stuff that is dumped on you or you can decide that you are going to have lunch.

  • Bassano Clapper11/09/2009 at 18:54

depends what unis, it's more important to do well in the exams then have a good 1 line on your personal statement

When did personal statement come into being?

    I keep hearing this term

I do not like it, it's sounds like a letter from my bank

  • lou11/09/2009 at 18:54

We don't discriminate. We'll whisper in her ear & fix it ;)

hehehe if i have another week similar to this one i'll have to tell her to stop.. it's just way to much to have to do..

  • lou11/09/2009 at 18:55

I do not like it, it's sounds like a letter from my bank

personal statements are evil... especially when you dont know what you want to study at uni! :(

  • Bassano Clapper11/09/2009 at 18:58

  • Steven Roy11/09/2009 at 18:59

They have been on CVs for more than 10 years

  • Jon Waldock11/09/2009 at 18:59

personal statements are evil... especially when you dont know what you want to study at uni! :(

true story. i had to write my p/s for both business and motorsport, and then ended up having to write a new one when i started applying to people for Teaching courses

  • Bassano Clapper11/09/2009 at 19:00

They have been on CVs for more than 10 years

Have they always been called that?

It just seems like that but it is about to change. Soon you will be able to drive. This time next year you will be off to university. All will be well with the world

  • Pat W11/09/2009 at 19:01

When did personal statement come into being?

They have been on CVs for more than 10 years

I was told to do one when I left school and that was 13 years ago. Didn't have a clue what to write.. Have since discovered they are supposed to be tailored to particular jobs/circumstances.

  • Steven Roy11/09/2009 at 19:01

Have they always been called that?

Yes as far as I know

  • lou11/09/2009 at 19:02

It just seems like that but it is about to change. Soon you will be able to drive. This time next year you will be off to university. All will be well with the world

i'd like to fast forward to uni... just so i know what i'm going to study... i think it's all happening so quickly atm i've barely had time to breath let alone sleep.

  • Pat W11/09/2009 at 19:02

Waterloo east, and Victoria... they have the same kinda last train times though...

Ah, was hoping they'd be later.

I thought that was a cover letter

  • Pat W11/09/2009 at 19:02

Flipping a coin to make decisions is excrutiating stuff :P

Is that how I should choose whether to move?

  • Bassano Clapper11/09/2009 at 19:02

Ah, was hoping they'd be later.

Night train timetables are a bit Piquet

  • Pat W11/09/2009 at 19:03

I thought that was a cover letter

    You need both.

  • Bassano Clapper11/09/2009 at 19:03

Is that how I should choose whether to move?

    No, do it

  • Bassano Clapper11/09/2009 at 19:03

    You need both.

    AND a CV?

  • Lukeh11/09/2009 at 19:04

Is that how I should choose whether to move?

Absolutely. It was how I decided whether or not to listen to the entirity of The Resistance on Muse's website.

I feel your decision MAY be a bit more impirtant though... :P

  • Bassano Clapper11/09/2009 at 19:04

    You need both.

    AND a CV?

This is why I've been with the same employer for 18 years!

  • Scott Woodwiss11/09/2009 at 19:04

Evening all. I have DiRT 2 and am just about to begin my first race in the career. This game looks awesome :D

  • Pat W11/09/2009 at 19:05

    You need both.

    AND a CV?

Yes. A cover letter introduces yourself and says why you want the job. A personal statement explains who you are. A CV is just a list of jobs/employers and qualifications.

  • Lukeh11/09/2009 at 19:05

Posted a message for you on here earlier matey - Forza 2 demo on Sept 24th :)

  • Nick11/09/2009 at 19:05

    AND a CV?

Most jobs i have applied t recently dont want a cv, they want you to fill in a tailored form.

I dont have a statement on my CV as i keep it to 2 sides, i include the statement on the covering letter.

  • Bassano Clapper11/09/2009 at 19:05

Absolutely. It was how I decided whether or not to listen to the entirity of The Resistance on Muse's website.

Lukeh, we all know that was always going to happen ;)

Yes. A cover letter introduces yourself and says why you want the job. A personal statement explains who you are. A CV is just a list of jobs/employers and qualifications.

I thought the personal stuff should be on the CV too

  • Pat W11/09/2009 at 19:06

It used to have a short opening gambit. It got moved by the magical people who decide these things.

  • Jon Waldock11/09/2009 at 19:08

that may be an idea... money is an issue as well stupidly :( we are only sixth form students.. we have no money :( everything is going wrong in my life atm :(

having just completed year 13, i can tell you it is the hardest year so far, but once it's over, it feels so good! it's totally worth all the slog that you have to go through. i know it sucks now, but it'll be worth it, just make sure you stay healthy. that one really screwed me up big time, i did waaay too much

  • Steven Roy11/09/2009 at 19:08

i'd like to fast forward to uni... just so i know what i'm going to study... i think it's all happening so quickly atm i've barely had time to breath let alone sleep.

One thing you find is the older you get the faster time passes. My years only last two months now

  • Pat W11/09/2009 at 19:08

It used to have a short opening gambit. It got moved by the magical people who decide these things.

actually mine is in the same .doc file and I don't have the traditional CV, I have one with a layout based on skills because i've moved around so often a list becomes irrelevant.

  • Scott Woodwiss11/09/2009 at 19:09

    Naturally I won ;)

  • Bassano Clapper11/09/2009 at 19:10

  • Nick11/09/2009 at 19:10

    Great Scott!!

You are here... interested in cricket? Its like f1 without the cars and racing...

  • Steven Roy11/09/2009 at 19:10

I thought that was a cover letter

There is a cover letter which is specific to whatever you are applying for and the first section of the CV after the name, address etc is personal statement which says you are a conscientious, professional, technician, engineer, manager, albatross hunter who always seeks to excel and has a history of setting records for killing albatrosses sort of thing.

  • RG11/09/2009 at 19:11

You are here... interested in cricket? Its like f1 without the cars and racing...

England are awesome at it as well.

I send them a CV and fill in as little of the form as poss. Most boxes are filled with see CV

  • Bassano Clapper11/09/2009 at 19:12

There is a cover letter which is specific to whatever you are applying for and the first section of the CV after the name, address etc is personal statement which says you are a conscientious, professional, technician, engineer, manager, albatross hunter who always seeks to excel and has a history of setting records for killing albatrosses sort of thing.

    Then it's a personal paragraph

That's what I'm calling it from now

The other one comes from your bank :)

lou, been having a look at the trains. The latest one I can find going your way is 00:48 Charing X to Orpington, arrives 01:26. Not sure if it would be easier for your dad to pick you up from there than Wembley? If you need me to I can double check when I get to work on Monday, we have a better travel system there.

oooo thank you Janna, that may work.... would we need to buy another train ticket though (would our daily travel cards expire come midnight?) i've no idea if we could make it back to charing cross by 12:50... i take it it wouldn't take 2 hours to get out of the stadium and on the underground to the station?

I would allow an hour to get out of the stadium and an hour for travel, bearing in mind all Wembley tube stops will be rammed with people causing mega queuing..

i totally forgot about the fact it would be really late for him to drive us! he is home btw... and very grumpy, i asked him what i should do and all i got was 'get 2 rooms in a travel lodge and split the price' i asked my friend if that would work for her (as there are 4 of us going) and she said she doesn't have enough money to stay anywhere...

i may just curl up under my duvet and act like this isn't happening.

NASA has decided that they can't land the shuttle in Florida today so they are going to try to land at Edwards Air Force Base in California. It is a near certainty that this will happen.

The landing is scheduled for 8:53pm Eastern / 1:53am UK time. The de-orbit burn will take start 1 hour and 6 minutes before the landing so that will give us plenty of notice.

    #Derren

How are we supposed to know this isnt staged?

most things he does - like 'reading people's minds' is all done through the power of suggestion, i remember we went to a psychology conference last year and the very famous psychologist that taught Derren was taking a lecture, and he showed us some basics of how it can be done, it's really interesting tbh. he did say how he didn't agree that Derren uses it as a show though..

You know what, I can't put my finger on it, but TBH there's something about his presenting style that makes him come across as smug and that he knows more than you...

I would not call him a magician, that's for sure!

  • Steven Roy11/09/2009 at 20:46

You know what, I can't put my finger on it, but TBH there's something about his presenting style that makes him come across as smug and that he knows more than you...

Clearly he does know more than us and for his act to work he has to convince his subjects that he knows more than them

You know what, I can't put my finger on it, but TBH there's something about his presenting style that makes him come across as smug and that he knows more than you...

He is super arrogent... he comes across as if everyone is dumber than he is and that somehow they arent as good a person as him.

Look how he walked on at the begining of the show

  • Steven Roy11/09/2009 at 20:47

I would not call him a magician, that's for sure!

A lot of what he does is magic

Perhaps, but thats knowlege, he seems to think he is more intelligent, it makes him come across really badly...

  • Steven Roy11/09/2009 at 20:50

Is he actually saying how he did it then?

He is doing all sorts of build up about the sort of things he tried. Wisdom of crowds, averaging out peoples guess, unconcious writing. All sorts of bull that has nothing to do with what he really did.

  • RG11/09/2009 at 20:51

He is acting a persona to get a reaction from his subjects.

It's like the horse racing thing he did where he has a group of people convinced that there is a magic formula.

could it not have been done really easily with a green screen effect on the balls?

  • Steven Roy11/09/2009 at 20:54

could it not have been done really easily with a green screen effect on the balls?

It is going to be something like that. On the Wednesday show he said he may only get 5 right which suggests a time delay may affect the last one

  • RG11/09/2009 at 20:54

It is going to be something like that. On the Wednesday show he said he may only get 5 right which suggests a time delay may affect the last one

To be fair, in the 24 group had only got like 4 right beforehand???

This lot are going to be convinced that they predicted the lottery.

  • Steven Roy11/09/2009 at 20:56

To be fair, in the 24 group had only got like 4 right beforehand???

In the horse racing thing people were betting all their savings because he kept predicting winners. There was no system it was a complete con. Same with the religion on

  • RG11/09/2009 at 20:56

This lot are going to be convinced that they predicted the lottery.

I wonder if any of them have, say, a green screen shop?

Will they be meeting again tomorrow?

The way its going, thats scuppered my chance of predicting it.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)11/09/2009 at 20:57

The one where he played Chess against 9 chessmasters and beat them was brilliant - the problem is that he spoilt it by doing something annoying afterwards!

  • Steven Roy11/09/2009 at 20:57

I wonder if any of them have, say, a green screen shop?

They have no idea they are being conned. People ant to believe

    how did he do it?

    Not the way he claimed

  • Steven Roy11/09/2009 at 21:03

    how did he do it?

He is not going to tell us. Somehow he is transferring the numbers to the ball as they come in which is a prettty standard magician's trick although I don't know how he did it. It is certainly nothing to do with crowd guesses or automatic writing.

  • RG11/09/2009 at 21:03

The Russian Roulette event a while back, he did explain things, but that was the last event of his I watched, apart from the 5 min Lotto reveal thing, but we could only get a couple of TV channels this week, so we could have been watching anything that was on at that time.

    This grandstand

    For this view 1 2

Now who wants to come with me :D :D :D

The trees on the right are in the way! I don't want to watch slow F1 cars in a chicane, I want to watch fast F1 cars. Erm. If I were going.

But you see them braking from veryhigh speed, then navigating tight corners at an overtaking spot before accelerating as quicly as possible...

better than a blur every 5 seconds!

Wherever you watch a race from, there's going to be some kind of compromise, and that entirely depends on what you want to see.

For Amy's choice, there's a good possibility of the race being decided at that point. I'd personally want to see them coming through that final corner.

    nice one :-)

  • Pat W11/09/2009 at 21:50

I have never drank at a race before. It'll be a whole new world.

I've only been to one F1 race and I drank throughout. Mornings were a drag but the lunchtime beer helps.

The brawn was worn? (sorry, not helpfull, couldnt resist)

  • Steven Roy11/09/2009 at 21:51

a quick question about f1...which brawn had a gearbox problem today in practice?

Jenson had some problem with his engine and carbon fibre charring near his exhaust. Don't emember a gearbox problem

  • lou11/09/2009 at 21:51

another question... what is the little red box on the brawn? in this pic? http://tinyurl.com/nwlo9a - the smallest and most pointless piece of advertising? or just a sticker?

a quick question about f1...which brawn had a gearbox problem today in practice?

I don't know, but Rubens mentioned his gearbox worry (nothing specific) in a twitter post.

  • lou11/09/2009 at 21:52

Jenson had some problem with his engine and carbon fibre charring near his exhaust. Don't emember a gearbox problem

oh.... i suppose i should actually check the free practice positions then.. i take it that means that jenson didn't do well..

  • lou11/09/2009 at 21:52

I don't know, but Rubens mentioned his gearbox worry (nothing specific) in a twitter post.

ah okay, that explains why i can see pics of mechanics looking at a gearbox :)

  • startledbunny11/09/2009 at 21:53

    This is what he posted:

the car was better then the result today. We are better than Spa...hoping the gear box will be fine tomorrow

  • Steven Roy11/09/2009 at 21:55

another question... what is the little red box on the brawn? in this pic? http://tinyurl.com/nwlo9a - the smallest and most pointless piece of advertising? or just a sticker?

I have blown it up as much as I can and it is impossible t read. It looks like it could say certified but I have no idea why it is there

  • Steven Roy11/09/2009 at 21:56

oh.... i suppose i should actually check the free practice positions then.. i take it that means that jenson didn't do well..

It was a minor problem. I don't think it affected his times. He seemed to be having trouble getting heat in his tyres though

  • startledbunny11/09/2009 at 21:58

This is what I filmed of Romain last year at the Renault World Series In the 2007 F1 car. Can't remember what the corner was called, but it was after Stowe, and usually there's a TV screen where we were stood. If you can't view the film, the direct link to my drop.io is http://drop.io/startledbunny

    The ticket cost me nothing.

Nice work! Looks like you were at Abbey, the corner in the distance is Club.

Thought about cutting it out, but nah, who cares.

Yeah, I think that's about right. Sutil went off in Qualifying this year around there, they take the chicane, and go under a bridge, and turn right into the stadium section.

it's not on the body behind either... tis very strange, it looked like the red sponsor logo they have on the mini barge board thing they have originally to me

  • startledbunny11/09/2009 at 22:12

So are Stowells for not sponsoring Stowe. (I always explain that particular corner as the one where the Former Ferrari driver went off and broke his leg.)

things like that are always funny afterwards though :) we have a problem with the ict dept, as they make the computer in the tech box turn off at 9pm... we've asked them to stop making it do that but they wont, so if we are using the projecter (like we did slightly for les mis) it goes off at 9pm and there is a mad dash to make sure the computer is on mute and to restart it in a few mins :D always a little stressful

Why not take another engine and have a 30 place penalty then?

I have no idea if it would work.

Taking 2 at once would appear pretty unsporting to me

That spirit of the rules thing?

Taking it to the extreme, they should have took 16x10 place penalties in Melbourne.

  • Nick11/09/2009 at 23:10

Taking it to the extreme, they should have took 16x10 place penalties in Melbourne.

Exactly... not sure whats to be gained by winning like that, although the rule is pretty silly to begin with...

  • startledbunny11/09/2009 at 23:11

Why not take another engine and have a 30 place penalty then?

I'm a little confused. I presume that Vettel doesn't have 8 engines in the back to play with, but that he can't change his engine 2 more times before penalties are incurred?

  • Maverick11/09/2009 at 23:14

I'm a little confused. I presume that Vettel doesn't have 8 engines in the back to play with, but that he can't change his engine 2 more times before penalties are incurred?

    The thinking goes like this...

Vettel turns up in Singapore with engine 7.

They then swap it for engine 8.

They then swap that for engine 9 and get a 10-place grid penalty for it.

They then swap that for engine 10 and get another 10-place penalty.

They then do quali and race with engine 10 and they still have engines 8 and 9 for the rest of the season. The thinking being that Brawn will struggle anyway in Singapore. (And he might get a very helpful safety car in Singapore anyway!)

  • Nick11/09/2009 at 23:15

I'm a little confused. I presume that Vettel doesn't have 8 engines in the back to play with, but that he can't change his engine 2 more times before penalties are incurred?

I belive he will be on his 8th engine tomorrow... he will then have to re use engines or take another at singapore and take a 10 place drop.

Specualation is he will take 2 and take a 20 place drop... why not then just use as many as possible so he can have a fresh one for each remaining race?

  • Maverick11/09/2009 at 23:17

If Red Bull and Brawn qualify down the grid tomorrow, it must be tempting to retire early in the race.

    The thinking goes like this…

Vettel turns up in Singapore with engine 7.

They then swap it for engine 8.

They then swap that for engine 9 and get a 10-place grid penalty for it.

They then swap that for engine 10 and get another 10-place penalty.

    They then do quali and race with engine 10 and they still have engines 8 and 9 for the rest of the season. The thinking being that Brawn will struggle anyway in Singapore. (And he might get a very helpful safety car in Singapore anyway!) {Comment #1198}

Almost. Engine 8, as far as I can tell from the Radio 5 Live commentary, is going in at Monza, so all changes to new engines at Singapore would attract a penalty. There's just time to do two changes between the start of Saturday morning and qualifying (they wouldn't want to do one after that because they'd start in the pit lane).

I just hope Mark doesn't go out of the race at a convenient-for-Vettel point because some tram made his gearbox confused. Nobody would believe him the second time, even if it was true.
