Ahhh, it's was 09/09/09 yesterday and I missed marking it? Today it is 10/09/09 and that's not special at all, is it? Rubbish. Anyway, on to more Formula 1 shaped things:

  • Thanks to Alex's plugging yesterday, we're going great guns on the Sidepodradio submissions, but there's always room for more. Don't forget to have a glance at the guest posts to see where you can get involved, and as ever, make sure you visit the wiki for an overview.
  • It's officially time to start talking about Monza, as the F1 Digest preview was released yesterday, and all the news is starting to come from within the paddock itself. For example, FOTA have accepted Williams and Force India back into their fold again, saying they want to keep to their mission statement of having all current teams enrolled.
  • It's time to give Jon's new podcast a plug in the daily. We mentioned previously he might be thinking of starting one up, and the first episode is up and waiting for you to have a listen. Jon's also done a special episode for Sidepodradio, so if you like it, you'll want to tune in for that as well.

That's all for now. It's Thursday today, which is usually a bad day for a lot of us in the comments. Watch out for pictures of cute pandas as we try and cheer ourselves up. I'll see you in the comments.

I'll remember it for the day one of my company's clients got thrown off the programme in dramatic fashion for failing to observe the most fundamental rule there is:

"If you want to achieve anything, it helps if you turn up occasionally".

not sure if this is new. but in itunes you can right-click a song you've purchased and convert to mp3. i think someone was burning to CD before? anyhow, the option is there.

  • Paul10/09/2009 at 01:19

Interesting. Isn't that getting around the DRM, or maybe it's only for the unprotected AAC

  • me10/09/2009 at 01:20

Interesting. Isn't that getting around the DRM, or maybe it's only for the unprotected AAC

there's no drm on itunes music anymore. the only issue were the files being in AAC format, which can't be read by that many devices.

  • Paul10/09/2009 at 01:23

This is great. iTunes has a lot of tricky little features.

I was able to be the Good Uncle, when I was able to just drag MP3s straight from iTunes to my niece's non-ipod MP3 player. She didn't know how to get songs on there.

(of course I should probably have just bought her and ipod.....)

  • me10/09/2009 at 01:26

This is great. iTunes has a lot of tricky little features.

most absurd thing i've found in the update. you can now sync photos to your ipod based on who's in them.

so i could say, sync all pics of christine and it'll match any pics where it recognises her face.

i cannot imagine that i'd ever use such functionality?

  • Paul10/09/2009 at 01:27

i cannot imagine that i'd ever use such functionality?

But that's SOOOO cool. and isn't that what matters?

Is that feature only if you have iphoto to tag the photos? In which case - Mac only?

  • me10/09/2009 at 01:28

Is that feature only if you have iphoto to tag the photos? In which case - Mac only?

ahh yeah could be. you don't tag them though, you pick one and it finds the rest.

  • Paul10/09/2009 at 01:28

so i could say, sync all pics of christine and it'll match any pics where it recognises her face.

You could say: only sync photos with a face - in which case, you would never get a photo of yourself!

  • me10/09/2009 at 01:29

You could say: only sync photos with a face - in which case, you would never get a photo of yourself!

Gené and Badoer retained by Ferrari for 2010? They must have an infinite supply of funds and a penchant for geriatric drivers. Confirmed for next year: Massa, Raikkonen, Fisichella, Badoer, Gené and most likely Alsonso with occasional turns by the big Schu. How many testers do you need when you can't test?

As an aside, heavens forbid Badoer had a hand in sorting out the 458 Italia.

It must be! If its on the internet it is a FACT!

Well it's not on Wikipedia, so I am a little skeptical.

    Yeah, that's what I said.

  • Alex Andronov10/09/2009 at 05:57

    Yeah, that's what I said.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)10/09/2009 at 06:30

#sidepodspace article about the Hubble Telescope - wow, some really cool pics here!

  • Alex Andronov10/09/2009 at 06:31

Has anyone here seen the film "Pirates of Silicon Valley"?

Yup I have seen it... The guy playing Steve (Noah Wyle) was so accurate that he actually gave a speech as Steve and got in big trouble.

  • Alex Andronov10/09/2009 at 06:34

    It's quite a good film I reckon...

If you liked a lot of material seemed to have come from the really fascianting and excellent tv series called "The Triumph of the Nerds: The Rise of Accidental Empires" The whole thing is about 4 hours but because it was made for PBS it was the first program to ever have Bill Gates and Steve Jobs in it. And it addresses what was good and bad about both. The presenter had worked previously for both companies. He had access to tons of people to tell their stories several of whom are sadly dead now. It's well worth a watch if you can get hold of it.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)10/09/2009 at 06:36

Thanks - I'll look out for that one!

The best thing about it is that it doesn't take itself too seriously as a program... And it really is history it ends just before Steve comes back to Apple and just as Windows 95 is coming back....

*thinks about watching it again* :)

  • Paul10/09/2009 at 06:41

And so, beaten down, finally I head home.

Damn you Thursday, you win again!!

Has anyone here seen the film “Pirates of Silicon Valley”?

I've seen it thrice! Was required viewing in college. Yes, Noah Wyle was spot-on as Steve Jobs. :D I think it's worth a sequel now, especially with Steve Jobs.

    AMY!!!!

Big interview with Heikki in Autosport!

    (behind paywall)

  • Alex Andronov10/09/2009 at 07:42

Big interview with Heikki in Autosport!

I say big... decent sized... lets say

  • Alex Andronov10/09/2009 at 07:44

    So... pieces falling into place...

    Alonso to Ferrari... Check...

    Where does Kimi go? McLaren.

But what about Rosberg he was going to McLaren.

    No he's going to Brawn.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)10/09/2009 at 07:45

    Alonso to Ferrari... Check...

    Has that been confirmed yet?

    Where does Kimi go? McLaren.

    Sounds good

But what about Rosberg he was going to McLaren.

    No he's going to Brawn.

    Boo.

  • Alex Andronov10/09/2009 at 07:49

Nothing confirmed... But that's what will play out I reckon. It all sounds pretty good...

    But where does Heikki go?

  • Alex Andronov10/09/2009 at 07:51

Nothing confirmed... But that's what will play out I reckon. It all sounds pretty good...

I don't mean good as in I'm happy but good as in solidly reliable.

Keke will have bitten their hand off when they suggested Nico to Brawn. Can't beat Lewis but he can be Jenson will be his thinking - even if he's wrong.

  • Alex Andronov10/09/2009 at 07:52

Keke will have bitten their hand off when they suggested Nico to Brawn. Can't beat Lewis but he can be Jenson will be his thinking - even if he's wrong.

    *beat

  • Alex Andronov10/09/2009 at 07:55

So nobody has been able to test their low downforce setups for Monza. This could mean Friday is especially important.

In theory it should go a bit like Spa that's the thinking but with zero testing there's a chance the McLaren's might be back up the front what with their super dooper simulator

  • paul (oz)10/09/2009 at 07:55

    But where does Heikki go?

Back to Ren-Alt if they are still around?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)10/09/2009 at 07:55

Keke will have bitten their hand off when they suggested Nico to Brawn. Can't beat Lewis but he can beat Jenson will be his thinking - even if he's wrong.

I don't think he can. Goldilocks is really overrated and I think a better driver in that Williams will have won a race by now...

  • paul (oz)10/09/2009 at 07:58

So nobody has been able to test their low downforce setups for Monza. This could mean Friday is especially important.

There has been a few doing straight line testing hasn't there? And that's what counts at Monza

  • Christine10/09/2009 at 08:01

Hello, good morning, new blog post: http://www.sidepodcast.com/2009/09/10/sidepodradio-the-nostradamus-effect/

  • Journeyer10/09/2009 at 08:07

Back to Ren-Alt if they are still around?

He'll have to fight with Kubica and di Grassi to get the other seat.

But yeah, it all looks reasonable. But here's what I'm thinking - Alonso to Ferrari, Kimi off to WRC, Heikki stays at McLaren, Rosberg off to Brawn, Hulkenberg debuts with Williams, Kubica to Renault, Kovalainen moves to Lotus alongside Heidfeld.

  • Journeyer10/09/2009 at 08:11

But yeah, it all looks reasonable. But here’s what I’m thinking – Alonso to Ferrari, Kimi off to WRC, Heikki stays at McLaren, Rosberg off to Brawn, Hulkenberg debuts with Williams, Kubica to Renault, Kovalainen moves to Lotus alongside Heidfeld.

    That doesn't look right! :D

With Heikki staying at McLaren, Lotus will have Heidfeld and maybe Fisichella? Bortolotti is also an option.

  • Alex Andronov10/09/2009 at 08:11

I don't think he can. Goldilocks is really overrated and I think a better driver in that Williams will have won a race by now...

One team drivers are always trouble I think... Jenson changed very early on in his career and so in some ways he suffers from the same problem... They arrive and don't know anything and have to get told what to do, and somehow they then have to make the transition to telling the team what to do. It's much easier if you change teams after you've had a bit of experience.

Lewis neatly sidestepped this phenomenon by sheer force of will somehow.

So I think Rosberg might do better just by changing teams at this point. It would be mutually beneficial for all.

  • Alex Andronov10/09/2009 at 08:12

Ah Århus is lovely - you will have a great time!

Try and visit the Royal Palace just outside of town - the gardens are fantastic!

There are some lovely cafe's by the waterfront in town too!

Have fun and tell us all later!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)10/09/2009 at 08:35

Ah Århus is lovely - you will have a great time!

Danish lesson for the day - Å is actually 'Aa' which is pronounced like 'Oar'. 'hus' is pronounced 'hoos'.

So the city name is pronounced 'Oar-hoos'.

See? it's much easier than Finnish! :D #sorryamy

  • Alex Andronov10/09/2009 at 08:50

So the city name is pronounced 'Oar-hoos'.

And then you can use it in a sentence if you are a very rich posh person...

"Listen Jeeves, I haven't got a dashed place to keep all of my boating equipment, alert the men they must begin work on my Oar hoos immediately".

  • Amy10/09/2009 at 08:50

"Listen Jeeves, I haven't got a dashed place to keep all of my boating equipment, alert the men they must begin work on my Oar hoos immediately".

is the oar hoos next to the boat hoos?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)10/09/2009 at 08:51

"Listen Jeeves, I haven't got a dashed place to keep all of my boating equipment, alert the men they must begin work on my Oar hoos immediately".

is the oar hoos next to the boat hoos?

"What colour is the boat hoos in Heerford?"

  • Alex Andronov10/09/2009 at 08:53

is the oar hoos next to the boat hoos?

Only lowly rich people have one oar hoos, I think you'd ideally want one on each side of your boat hoos so you can keep the left hand oars in one hoos and the right hand oars in the other.

  • Alex Andronov10/09/2009 at 08:54

"What colour is the boat hoos in Heerford?"

    heh!

"Listen Jeeves, I haven't got a dashed place to keep all of my boating equipment, alert the men they must begin work on my Oar hoos immediately".

Maybe Prince Joachim says stuff like that, I dunno.

He's not the Crown Prince, but he races classic cars, is an organic farmer and talks English posher than the Queen!

  • Alex Andronov10/09/2009 at 08:54

Only lowly rich people have one oar hoos, I think you'd ideally want one on each side of your boat hoos so you can keep the left hand oars in one hoos and the right hand oars in the other.

    There is https://watershed.ustream.tv/product/pricing

    So perhaps not then! :)

It has been mentioned at least twice on the parade lap

Despite the rumours to the contrary about me falling off of my chair during the Sidepodpannel. The only time I have ever actually fallen off my chair was during Sidepodcast broadcasts was when Christine had a copy of my book in the studio in the first series of the Parade Lap! It was an amazing moment for me!

There was a very strange thing that happened when Humphry Littleton died. They did a documentary about him but they had one of the continuity announcers for Radio 4 do the voice over and so I constantly expected her to break into the news or the shipping forecast!

It was Charlotte Green who does have a very strange voice when you think about it... In a good way... Hard to describe.

I think it's live. He was worried yesterday about him having to predict responses to what I asked live. So I think he's going to be scripted live. You play the question he responds. Which is why he's asked for the question to be sent to him in text rather than the audio which he's asked to send to you.

Not in Denmark you can't - the iPhone contract is £250 for 6 months + £250 to buy the phone ... plus the wifi deal extends to my netbook too and I much prefer using that!

Okay! People seem to get the prices wrong here quite often somehow...

Say you look at the 16 Gb iPod Touch Amazon says £215.99

16 Gb 3Gs iPhone costs £87.11 + £34.26 per month for 24 months big scary numbers right!

Basically you can take £5.37 a month off the cost of the mobile phone contract over the 24 months because of £87.11 being that much cheaper than £215.99.

So £28.89 a month is the actual mobile phone contract price.

Previously for me I was on a £30 a month mobile contract so upgrading to an iPhone was actually cheaper than buying an iPod Touch. Your mileage may vary and Mr C is excluded from this for obvious reasons :)

  • Alex Andronov10/09/2009 at 10:56

That is a good deal. My phone usage is something daft like less than £10 a month, and I don't like browsing the web on the iTouch. However, some of the otehr goodies like GPS and the camera would have been nice, so hopefully by the time this iTouch breaks the price will have come down and I can afford an iPhobe...

    Don't panic!

The price reduction means that if you go for a 32Gb comparison then it now would mean your actual cost of your phone contract would be £32 per month. And you could still get a 16Gb instead if you wanted such a thing :)

  • James10/09/2009 at 11:33

So based on my old phone contract of £30 a month that means what I am doing is buying a 30Gb iPod Touch, carrying on with my phone contract and paying a one off charge of £48 for a camera, video, GPS, compass, and data without wifi. That's still a steal in my book.

  • me10/09/2009 at 11:38

    can't argue with that.

i might suggest that your original phone contract was a bit pricey mind you. it depends on what you think it's worth. 3g pay-as-you-go topup for a tenner when i need it still seems cheaper to me.

  • Amy10/09/2009 at 11:39

doesn't work for me because I'd have to buy a phone outright because none of the contracts here include international minutes, which is what I use the most.

    32gb iphone outright = $1040

    32gb ipod touch = $399

does it sound less painful if i say £540? ;)

  • James10/09/2009 at 11:42

I'd have kept the 16GB and scrapped the 8GB, there is now a big gap between the two models.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)10/09/2009 at 11:42

    32gb iphone outright = $1040

    woah!

My colleague just paid £500 for a jailbroken 32Gb...

  • me10/09/2009 at 11:43

My colleague just paid £500 for a jailbroken 32Gb...

    he couldn't jailbreak it himself?

  • Alex Andronov10/09/2009 at 11:44

I'd have kept the 16GB and scrapped the 8GB, there is now a big gap between the two models.

The thing is £150 brings it down to impulse level (for these kinds of things, I'm not mad, I'm not saying I think like that). It's the price point where people think... Yeah okay.

  • Alex Andronov10/09/2009 at 11:45

Jailbreaking isn't the problem... getting a phone without a contract is the problem.

  • me10/09/2009 at 11:48

I'd have kept the 16GB and scrapped the 8GB, there is now a big gap between the two models.

i'd have done what they did, but have the 8gb sans video camera and the bigger models more pricey but with an iphone camera.

8gb itouch is tempting to get christine. we can share apps now. which means she gets the official iphone app for free. and free again next season.

  • me10/09/2009 at 11:49

  • James10/09/2009 at 11:50

So based on my old phone contract of £30 a month that means what I am doing is buying a 30Gb iPod Touch, carrying on with my phone contract and paying a one off charge of £48 for a camera, video, GPS, compass, and data without wifi. That's still a steal in my book.

Do you work for Apple Alex? :p Anyway you've given me something to consider when my phone contract runs out :)

The thing is £150 brings it down to impulse level (for these kinds of things, I'm not mad, I'm not saying I think like that). It's the price point where people think... Yeah okay.

Yeah I see that and the 8GB can compete with the other ipod models as well.

My mum doesn't like them. She blames the fact they were "overplayed" in her youth.

She hates that my brother and I inherited my dads love of them :D

  • James10/09/2009 at 12:05

why does the new info about alonso change your view though?

The bit about Symonds saying everything would be ok. He or Flav are lying about something from what we know so far. Or Flav can't remember having a meeting with Piquet before the GP.

But what AUTOSPORT says about Alonso backs up what I said about his strategy so I'm happy :)

  • Amy10/09/2009 at 12:05

    Uh-oh... FTA:

Radio transcripts of the race, which have been obtained by the FIA, show that director of engineering Symonds did not share the concerns of fellow team members about making such an early stop – telling the team: "No, no, it's going to be alright."

Is he going to be another Dave Ryan? It's starting to look an awful lot like it... That would be a darn shame.

It was one lap of the road circuit, and then you hugged the inside line and did the oval before returning to the start/finish straight. It's used in the finale of the movie "Grand Prix" and it's awesome - so difficult on the sims as well...

It was amazing how they just left the car there!

rFactor ships with a version of Monza which combines the modern road course with the oval, skipping the 1st chicane. Bumpy. The other thing rFactor can do is run multiple types of cars at once. Fake multi-class racing for nerds! Wonder how the replays are saved.. will check later.

Perhaps it's Piquet's camp who released it.

He's pointing to Symonds! My word...

If this is true (and it's a sworn statement, so I don't see any reason why it shouldn't be), then it's adios to Symonds, perhaps Briatore, probably Renault. Interesting, though, that Piquet's statement never made any mention of Alonso knowing of the strategy.

are there any other sources. f1sa have been very unreliable in the past. very.

    Still not enough for me...

  • James10/09/2009 at 13:50

Can we take bets on how long I will spend adding things to my wishlist when I install the new version? :)

    4 hours.

    :D

and Mr C you could create MP3 files in the previous version of iTunes. You could change it using the import settings on the general tab of preferances :)

Let's wait for Autosport or BBC.

  • Nick10/09/2009 at 13:51

what about nelson ruining massa's championship though?

Massa didnt win the championship because he wasnt good enough, not because of what happened in singapore

  • Neil Denham10/09/2009 at 13:51

Hello, just watching the classic GPs on the BBC site, amazing when Warwick has that crash and runs back to get in the spare car!

Anyway, I am on a half day and should be out enjoying the sun really, hows everyone today?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)10/09/2009 at 13:52

I disagree with that statement - an equal argument could have been applied to Lewis...

  • James10/09/2009 at 13:52

Massa didnt win the championship because he wasnt good enough, not because of what happened in singapore

    Singapore didn't help things though.

  • Nick10/09/2009 at 13:52

He reckons that the team is well within their rights to do it because he's only ruining his own race ... yet he disapproves of Hamilton lying to the stewards, reckons it's different!

Rational thought does escape some people, i have seen this before! :P

  • Maverick10/09/2009 at 13:52

That said, I do remember Piquet's face on the pitwall when Alonso won. He was absolutely forlorn. I thought nothing of it at the time...

I noticed his absence from Renault's celebration photos.

I think it is plausible that Alonso knew nothing of this too... at least I hope so...

Plausible and hard to prove otherwise unless Flav/Symonds suddenly start squealing

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)10/09/2009 at 13:53

Plausible and hard to prove otherwise unless Flav/Symonds suddenly start squealing

But is Alonso tarred with the 2007 brush?

  • Maverick10/09/2009 at 13:53

Massa didnt win the championship because he wasnt good enough, not because of what happened in singapore

He would probably have been good enough if the hose hadn't been attached

Imagine where we'd be right now had Massa won the championship. They'd want Alonso DSQed and everyone moved up a place.

  • Journeyer10/09/2009 at 13:55

    JrobertsF1 says its trustworthy

And he's from F1 Racing. That's good enough for me.

  • Maverick10/09/2009 at 13:56

But is Alonso tarred with the 2007 brush?

Probably, there's a lot of tar in F1 though.

You would have thought banning the tobacco advertising would have helped.

  • Nick10/09/2009 at 13:57

I disagree with that statement - an equal argument could have been applied to Lewis...

Without the FIAssistance it would never have gone down to the last race.

He made too many mistakes, he seems like a nice enough guy, but he blew it.

  • Nick10/09/2009 at 13:59

I think it is plausible that Alonso knew nothing of this too... at least I hope so...

I think its highly unlikely, practically impossible....

But he wont be banned, he makes too many people too much money.

He also bought PK off by giving him a helmet at silverstone...

  • Journeyer10/09/2009 at 14:02

I think its highly unlikely, practically impossible…

But when even Piquet didn't bring him up as someone who knew, it'll take someone else squealing for him to be implicated. I don't see anyone doing that.

  • Nick10/09/2009 at 14:02

Where are you getting all this from? You're not wearing a tinfoil hat, perchance?

Why would he not question being put on such a ridiculous strategy?

He had to have done. even if it was just a nod and a wink, he would have to have known what was happening...

OK then - my comment is that I think it's funny he whines about his emotional state... awww, poor Nelson!

Also, he names and shames everyone except Anando. Why is he not mentioned? Surely he would have had to know about it somehow as it's too crazy a strategy to justify?

  • me10/09/2009 at 14:05

more crazy than his strategy in hungary?

  • Nick10/09/2009 at 14:08

There are unusual strategies, and then there is what he was on in singapore...

Starting 15th with 12 laps of fuel makes absoloutly no sense. Maybe on the back row it might be worth a gamble, but still.... its way out of left field.

  • Neil Denham10/09/2009 at 14:08

Have just had word from Sean that he is still up for the All Sports show, so, can we dream up some questions about sports other than F1? I know there must be other sports out there...

    i know there's darts.

  • Christine10/09/2009 at 14:21

    i know there's darts.

These are the questions we have so far, which... eh-hem, are all from me:

Which is better, rugby or football?

How does the scoring work in cricket?

Why does England always do badly when I watch them?

Which F1 drivers would do well at other sports?

    Is darts a sport?

How on earth did curling come about?

How would you try and convince someone to join a synchronised swimming team?

  • Christine10/09/2009 at 14:21

MrC, Steven, Bassano, Alex, Lukeh, (Gavin?) WIll be the contestents...

I will think up scenarios which will involve 2 or 3 of them at a time and assign them all f1 characters. they will then improvise the scene and i will make up some points...

I will write a post about it this evening ;)

But it’s just too crazy? Surely?

more crazy than his strategy in hungary?

Yeah I dunno, it just all falls into place too easily.

    Hey Mr. C,

I was just thinking about Alonso. Yes, he did try a "crazy strategy" in China 2009, Hungary 2009 and Spain 2008, but there was one crucial difference - he was starting from the front. This is a gamble worth taking as if you are faster you can build up a lead before your first pitstop.

But in Singapore he started 15th ... and you would get no advantage with a light car because the track was difficult to overtake on. So the speed you gain is negated by the time you lose stuck behind another car, and all you might get is a bit of clear air and a couple of spots after your first pitstop.

In the Singapore Scenario, is it not better to fuel for a one stopper?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)10/09/2009 at 17:15

What form is your show taking now, by the way? I think I have missed out on some conversations.

Live "Whos start line is it anyway..."

I said yes to it too...

  • Journeyer10/09/2009 at 17:15

In the Singapore Scenario, is it not better to fuel for a one stopper?

I remember the commentators applauding the go-light strategy because it was trying something different, and they were gambling on a safety car.

thing is. if you're in a car and you know how utterly useless your teammate is. there's a good chance he might bin it early. cause he's beyond hopeless and it's a twisty street track, at night.

that's gotta be worth a gamble.

Massa was convinced enough to hunt down flav after the race though and confront him over it...

Could both Renault and BMW have to close down their facories? Certainly interesting times...

  • Kookiez10/09/2009 at 17:25

    Hi all

Trying again. Just read Piquets apparent FIA statement and this stuck out for me

"engineer of my car questioned the nature of the incident because he found it unusual, and I replied that I had lost control of the car. I believe that a clever engineer would notice from the car’s telemetry that I caused the incident on purpose"

Is that a dig at his engineer? What do you think?

  • Journeyer10/09/2009 at 17:28

Is that a dig at his engineer? What do you think?

I think so - an unneccessary one at that. But I think what he wants to happen is for the investigators to interrogate his engineer and see what he says.

  • Maverick10/09/2009 at 17:28

Is that a dig at his engineer? What do you think?

Sounds like one. Whether it's Piquet having the dig is still debatable. Sounds more like someone (Piquet?) is suggesting his engineer must have also known.

I am still leaning towards PK is utterly useless and it is a good bet to gamble on a safety car. PK proved he could barely handle the Renault at that corner on less than parade lap speeds as he was coming up to start position. All you people really expect PK to last an entire race there ?

That's more of a fantasy than Renault fixing a race !

    So your theorey is:

He was able to get through the corner ine in practice

He was able to get through that corner at the limit perfectly during qualifying,

He was able to get through the corner fine on his way to the grid

He then forgot how to take the corner on the parade lap and spun

He was able to drive around 12 laps at racing speed going through the corner perfectluy

He then remembered that he had forgotten to take the corner and spun off for the seccond time in an extremely bizzare way.

    Now thats a fantasy!

    ergo the cover-up.

Mind you, Alonso nearly wrecked his car on the warm-up lap in Spain. It can happen.

Also, Piquet's 'practice' spin was at another corner, right?

  • Maverick10/09/2009 at 17:35

Alonso gambled on a 3 lap window in a 61 lap race, it's very slim. Most likely time for a safety car was after the first lap and we saw what damage a vey early safety car did to a light fuelled Alonso in China.

  • Journeyer10/09/2009 at 17:35

    Guys,

A little OT but if you like in-car footage you will love this - It's from a BMW M3 GT2 going round Long Beach. It's really really awesome, but in parts it's a little shaky so you might want to be careful if you are sensitive to that sort of thing!

no... have decided it is a whole month away and will do something during the half term after my birthday, life is just way to hectic to be planning a month in advance atm :)

There is lots of space to talk about and people keep asking questions. I have also had a couple of people in the comments show an interest in being on the show though neither has confirmed. I am sure we wil fill it somehow.

You heard it people. Come up with an idea for a show or you get more of me. It's your own fault this time and I can take no blame. Either come up with something better or the last resort is me waffling more about space or whatever takes my fancy at the time. You may end up with half an hour on Neil Armstrong's middle name.

And send voicemails to all the shows that are looking for feedback. Lots of voicemails. And that includes me as I have been negligent in not doing any yet. I will do some tonight if I can get through the crowd waiting to leave messages.

The shuttel Discovery is due to land at 7:05pm Eastern/midnight05 UK time. Assuming the weather is co-operative the de-orbit burn will be made at 5:59 pm Easter/ 10:59pm UK so we will get plenty of warning if the landing is going to happen.

There are two landing windows both of which show a chance of thunderstorms in the area. I assume the second opportunity is 1 orbit after the first which is roughly and ahour and a half later.

I really do not think any sponsor or team would want young PK now. The youngest's career is all but over no matter whether he is allowed to keep a super-license. No wonder Ferrari did not get in touch with him over their spare seat.

Even if they had got in touch, there is no way he could have raced with this investigation ongoing...

I doubt he will be able to get another drive, but all the information which as come out goes some way to explain how such a talented GP2 driver stuggled so much in F1

I doubt he will be able to get another drive, but all the information which as come out goes some way to explain how such a talented GP2 driver stuggled so much in F1

The statement is interesting in that it really shows how he was emotionally broken by Flavio. I am not really sure how I feel towards Renault F1. I do not like the way Pat Symonds evaded direct questions that relate to Nelson's statement. I can say that if we never see Flavio in the Pitlane again I will not be grieving - in my book he is a very nasty individual indeed (even worse than Max).

Frankly I would not consider the team all the while Flavio and probably Pat are around if I were say Kubes of Kovy. It seems even Fernando's and Nelson's race engineers were not fully in the picture so I feel sorry for the team itself.

  • Nick10/09/2009 at 20:43

you seem to have found them all guilty already. are we not seeing a one sided picture right now?

When accusations are leaked and the only retort Renault can come up with is Flav claiming to know nothing, the oher man in the meeting claiming it was discussed but it was all PK's idea, they do start top look very guilty.

If they had said nothing i would still be considering the possibility it wasnt as PK described, but the headless chicken approach gives a very bad impression.

with all due respect, i am very glad you're not sitting on the wmsc next week.

The WMSC is largely irrelevant. They dont have a record which gives me any confidence the right decision will be made or the right punishment dished out.

Perception is key, and unless Renault are keeping amazingly quiet whilst the allegations damage the company name, i cant see that changing

  • Steven Roy10/09/2009 at 20:44

joe said the other day that flav was denying it? we literally know nothing.

Fro what I have read Flav is saying there was a meeting between the three of them but a crash wasn't discussed. Two of the three people at the meeting say it was so we can assume Flav is lying. Symonds and Piquet say the crash was discussed but disagree about how the topic was brought up and how it was left. There is no reasons for Symonds to say it was discussed if it wasn't so you have to assume it was. Therefore even if he had told Piquet not to do it and he went ahead and did it Symonds and Flav knew it was deliberate.

  • me10/09/2009 at 20:45

When accusations are leaked and the only retort Renault can come up with is Flav claiming to know nothing

as far as i know renault are yet to respond officially?

  • Rich10/09/2009 at 20:46

Piquet and Symonds both agree the crash was discussed in advance and it happened as discussed. That is all we know

Sources are saying that Symonds evaded answering certain questions but he appears to have confirm discussions that should never have taken place. What concerns me more is that there is clearly mind-games going on with the youngster. It was not the first race he had to sacrifice towards the shrine of Alonso. I cannot remember which race but the team deliberately put young PK on the wrong tyres to determine if there was any possible gain for Alonso to switch to them. He crashed as a consequence. Elements in the team are actually increasing the risk of injury with such strategies. Renault F1 is history no matter what the outcome of WMSC.

  • me10/09/2009 at 20:47

In the absence of an official statement, people pay closer attention to the unofficial.

But he is the head of their f1 team and he spoke to a journalist... it might not be an 'official' statement, by the team, but in the absence of one, isnt that what it effectivly stands as unnofficialy?

I wanted to say Monaco but was not sure where to find the info. I just think think Flavio screwed the kids so much to the benefit of Alonso. This is no longer a sport. That the team cannot even muster the courage to make a statement is damming in the extreme.

Looks like NASA think they are going to have a try at the first landing window. The shuttle has closed the payload bay doors which is one of the first things they have to do before landing. The doors are not closed until the last minutes becaus the inside of the doors are radiators that moderate the temperature of the inside of the shuttle. thus far autosport have found some things out and joe has found out something different and piquet has made a statement.

Where has Joe found a contrary evidence to the PK statement? Cannot see it on his website based on the Autosport revelation.

  • me10/09/2009 at 20:53

Hopefully they will be punished, but i could see them getting away from it...

possibly, but i don't see them having a "bleak looking future...".

lewis was busted flat out lying early this year and he's doing just fine.

Did you get the voicemails I left earlier? I kept being kicked off. Can you edit the travels in sidepodland comment which is spread over two voicemails or do I need to send it again?

  • Rich10/09/2009 at 20:56

i don't see why they should have to?

If I were a sponsor I would take a dim view, sure they cannot say too much before the meeting but the two head figures in the team have been reported to have said contradictory statements - this should be cleared up as a PR job. FIA gave Lewis full access to making his statements known as part of the process.

I don't see why he couldn't say he wouldn't want to win a race by dishonest means, for most drivers saying that would be more important than team policy :(

  • Rich10/09/2009 at 20:59

you seem to have found them all guilty already. are we not seeing a one sided picture right now?

thus far autosport have found some things out and joe has found out something different and piquet has made a statement.

I want to know what Joe has found wrt "some other things"?

  • me10/09/2009 at 21:01

I want to know what Joe has found wrt "some other things"?

tis ok. i think i misread autosport. i thought flav and pat agreed that the pre-race convo happened and it was piquet's idea to crash? but i can't find the sentence now, and have a million things to sort.

ignore i said that bit. am gonna shut off doohickey again until fp1 because another evening has gone by and mr.c. has achieved sweet fa again :(

  • Steven Roy10/09/2009 at 21:02

Sounds to me like Alonso is just following instructions. If he makes any kind of comment he will be hounded all weekend by the media so the best thing he can do is just repeat that he will say nothing

    FOUND IT! sheesh:

"Piquet's claims have, however, been denied by both Briatore and Symonds in documents that are believed to have been submitted with the FIA. Although they confirm that the meeting between the three of them took place, both suggest that it was Piquet's own suggestion to cause an accident."

that disagrees with joe's finding's right?

    i am going now though.

  • Nick10/09/2009 at 21:04

Sounds to me like Alonso is just following instructions. If he makes any kind of comment he will be hounded all weekend by the media so the best thing he can do is just repeat that he will say nothing

He could just have said it and then said this has no bearing on any ongoing investigation...

If he is leaving anyway then he should feel like he can do that.

Unless Ferrari have gotten cold feet?

  • Steven Roy10/09/2009 at 21:06

that disagrees with joe's finding's right?

Everything I have read so far says that Briatore said that the meeting took place but the crash wasn't discussed while Symonds said it was discussed but Piquet suggested it

  • Stuart C10/09/2009 at 21:20

    Evening all,

    Busy day, eh?

Found myself on the same Ryanair flight as Joe. Both of us were told by Hertz that we'd been 'upgraded' to what sounded like a 'turbo'. Having booked a Fiat Panda, I was quite excited. Sadly, the vehicle in question turned out to be a Qubo. Bubo, more like.

As an interesting aside, John Booth (Manor boss) is staying in the same hotel and I ended up giving him a lift. I've never stayed there before and it turns out that it isn't where Google says it is. Cue much driving around in circles and some embarrassment.

I went to the Alonso press conference and it was quite a tense affair. It was held in what was originally the Jordan motorhome (subsequently Super Aguri). It was very crowded, and as he walked past to enter via the rear door he glanced in and looked suitably displeased. Fleet Street set upon him in a pincer movement (wanting to elicit some juice about Singapore and/or Ferrari) and it got quite heated. He looked very uncomfortable while being grilled. After the PR lady read the riot act they changed tack and prompted a little slip, the nuances of which have gone largely unreported.

Asked if the Singapore situation had affected his plans for next year, he said:

    “No. No change.”

    Next question:

“Even if Renault aren’t in F1 next year?”

    His response (mumbled):

    “No.”

There followed a short and slightly awkward silence. Regrettably, some goon who had taken up station next to him felt compelled to break the silence by asking him a totally different question that led the topic away. What a plonker.

  • Stuart C10/09/2009 at 21:22

How can a journalist not know how to listen? Some poeple are just too keen to get their planned question in I suppose.

  • RG10/09/2009 at 21:23

    Grrrrrr!

Nice to have a fan of the site, come again soon :D

how do people actually get anything done in f1? there must be a secret.

I went to the Alonso press conference and it was quite a tense affair. It was held in what was originally the Jordan motorhome (subsequently Super Aguri).

flav bought the ex-aguri motorhome? he coulda got the posh force india one if he'd waited :)

If it makes you feel any better, I went outside for lunch and it was so bright that my eyes hurt and I have to go back to work! :)

:-) This possibility hadn't crossed my mind!

    2nd voicemail:

DT is sitting about two metres away from me in the press room (not right now, of course; am making use of free hotel wifi rather than being skanked to the tune of 120euros in the press room) so plenty of GRRRRRRRRRs have been flung my way already.

Some poeple are just too keen to get their planned question in I suppose.

Or terrified of silence. He did it twice in all. After the first one I assumed he was part of Ferd's management team, such was the fervency with which he swept away the awkward pause.

Is the general feeling that this will be Pat and Flavs last GP for a while?

We probably haven't heard the last of it - or seen the half of it - yet. Lots of very disillusioned people around. General feeling is that the new teams coming in next year will be essential in sweeping away the malaise.

  • Steven Roy10/09/2009 at 21:37

I keep getting kicked out of voicemail after about 2 minutes

no go for the first landing slot of the day so everything resets and they try to land at 8:40pm Eastern/ 1:40am UK time.

People who have blogs, listen up!

    Hi!

You may or may not have signed up to participate in the Interviews with Bloggers show for Sidepodradio.

I put my name down some while ago. Didn't know the q's though.

If you haven't, you should, it's awesome. If you have, the questions are now on the wiki. Please can you either send me the mp3s christine at sidepodcast dot com, or leave us a voicemail 0121 28 87225.

If there is time I'm hoping to have a voicemail session tomorrow night for various shows, so will see what I can do, assuming voicemail works by then..

  • lou10/09/2009 at 21:52

I will try leaving a few more now and keep them under two minutes. If I have to do them again tomorrow I will. At least it will put some ideas in my head.

why don't you record it as an mp3 and send them to christine? that way you know she definitely will get them.

  • Pat W10/09/2009 at 21:54

I will try and remind you but I also have the sieve problem.

thank you :) i never used to be like this.. but it seems to have crept up on me a little.

    (about memory)

I think it happens to everyone after you reach a certain level of things to do. I was never like it until the accountancy course, then I had to retain far more info than ever before with studies, work things, and lots of racing and other info.

  • Steven Roy10/09/2009 at 21:57

don't these people know that we need to sleep! :(

I don't mind if there is actually going to be a landing but they will probably postpone in and have to do it all again tomorrow

I have just left another set of voicemails and kept them all short so that I hung up on the voicemail. If those haven't worked I may try and find some recording software and do that.

    Night RG

    Hi Jon

  • Pat W10/09/2009 at 22:04

    Guys,

A little OT but if you like in-car footage you will love this - It's from a BMW M3 GT2 going round Long Beach. It's really really awesome, but in parts it's a little shaky so you might want to be careful if you are sensitive to that sort of thing!

I really like that! Thing is, on the TV the GT2s look incredibly slow because they are compared to the prototypes... it is easy to forget they are fast cars in their own right.

  • Jon Waldock10/09/2009 at 22:04

I slightly regret leaving audacity recording for 5.5 hours....

    It's now VERY slow...oops

  • lou10/09/2009 at 22:04

am not happy this evening... my bandwidth seems to be rubbish :( it's not even playing something i want to watch on iplayer :( bad times.

  • Jon Waldock10/09/2009 at 22:11

    ooooh dear..

it keeps crashing. i would convert it to an mp3 so i can edit it tomorrow, but i fear that may take up my hard drive...however, i do have a 65GB partition on my lappy that i havent used, i think ill save it to that!

  • James10/09/2009 at 22:11

If you haven't, you should, it's awesome. If you have, the questions are now on the wiki. Please can you either send me the mp3s christine at sidepodcast dot com, or leave us a voicemail 0121 28 87225.

    #sidepodradio

Is there a deadline for this. I'm suddenly rather keen to leave a voicemail/mp3 (for the first time I might add) :D

Mine was doing that yesterday but is fine now. Try a router reset, and by that I mean unplug the power from the back of it.

The sooner the better. Christine has to edit things together so if you have an idea call in as soon as possible

  • Jon Waldock10/09/2009 at 22:21

I'm not gonna listen to The Resistance until I have it in my hands, on Monday or hopefully Saturday as it should come early. I've said it for months and months and it emans more to me to wait until I have it.

But to know it's all there, on a webpage, waiting to be heard.... I must resist the resistance :P

  • Lukeh10/09/2009 at 22:33

In what form are you getting it? LP, CD, MP3?

LP, CD and high quality MP3. I'm paying £60 for this beast.

Yes I am that sad. But it was a special edition... and I couldn't help myself... :P

  • Nick10/09/2009 at 22:34

Do you have a record player?

Do you have a record player?

  • Paul10/09/2009 at 22:36

I have one. I can rent it out for, say, 40 pound?

  • Jon Waldock10/09/2009 at 22:37

I have one. I can rent it out for, say, 40 pound?

I don't have one, but if you give me 1000 pounds, i'll give you one for free!

  • Nick10/09/2009 at 22:37

You cant answer a question with a question!

    Certainly not the same question!

  • Lukeh10/09/2009 at 22:37

    It ate my reply...

No, I don't have a record player. I just need that edition. I haven't looked forward to an album like this... ever. Even Muse's other albums I looked forward to but nothing like this. everything I've heard off it so far is just so far beyond anything they've done inj the past in my personal opinion and I need something special to match the special hopes I have for it...

It probably sounds ridicukous, and it seems a waste of money to some people I'm sure, but I can't explain it very well. I just have to have this edition.

  • Jon Waldock10/09/2009 at 22:38

Cool, hope it lives up to expectation. They're playing the whole thing live on radio here from 12pm. Won't be listening as I am stuck at work.

  • Alianora La Canta11/09/2009 at 00:46

    Apparently, Fisi and Rob worked together when they were both still at Jordan. {Comment #347}

2002 and 2003. Giancarlo was the first driver Rob race engineered and the only one other than Felipe he has race engineered for more than two races. They got on well apart from a slight argument over strategy in Brazil 2003 (suffice to say Rob won that particular dispute...)

  • Alianora La Canta11/09/2009 at 00:57

    Is this for real? Why has this not come from the FIA and why is it not on FIA letterhead? {Comment #391}

It's not come from the FIA because according to their procedure this document should not have been posted on the internet except as part of the post-verdict judgement document. There's no way the FIA would permit themselves to appear to condone a breach of their own procedure without a big reason. More likely this is a leak.

  • Alianora La Canta11/09/2009 at 01:04

    How long do you think he’s been planning that? {Comment #445}

Probably since he first found out what a Ferrari was. Hopefully this helmet will bring him better luck than his last one-off "lid" in Monaco 2008...

  • Alianora La Canta11/09/2009 at 01:18

    how has everyone’s thursday been? {Comment #542}

It was fine until I went swimming. Now I feel rather bruised because everyone in my lane collided with each other more times than the average British Touring Cars racers do in their races. You'd never have thought it was a friendly training session with everyone involved on the same team...

  • Alianora La Canta11/09/2009 at 01:24

    Is that a dig at his engineer? What do you think? {Comment #561}

I think it might not be (but it could be). It could be as simple as giving a reason to call up his race engineer, who would presumably have to explain his actions. Depending on what he says, that could help Nelson - and there's no guarantee that he'd be called up without such a paragraph being inserted.

  • Alianora La Canta11/09/2009 at 01:27

    Also he states that he constantly asked for what lap he was on as not to get it wrong – I take it his telementary will show that and why didnt they pick it up a t the time as he says that he doesnt usually do this? {Comment #556}

The radio transmissions certainly would. Which is odd because didn't Renault have its radio transmissions wide open to everyone at that point (including the internet via its own site)?

  • Alianora La Canta11/09/2009 at 01:32

    Isnt he guaranteed one under max’s whistleblower rules? {Comment #671}

He's guaranteed anonymity and $1m. He's not automatically guaranteed a free pass.

Of course, leaks tend to mean no anonymity either, but it's the thought that counts (according to wishful thinking...)

  • Alianora La Canta11/09/2009 at 01:59

    Evening all,

    Busy day, eh? {Comment #777}

Sounds like it. One of my Twitter friends has reported that he went to Milan today and it took ages to find his hotel, so either both of you are staying in the same place or Google needs to update its North Italian mapping service...

  • Alianora La Canta11/09/2009 at 02:00

Asked if the Singapore situation had affected his plans for next year, he said:

    “No. No change.”

    Next question:

“Even if Renault aren’t in F1 next year?”

    His response (mumbled):

    “No.” {Comment #777}

Well, I suppose it shows Fernando and Renault won't be together in 2010. Not that this will have gone down well with the PR staff. The more I think about it the less chance there is of Renault being there next year. Who will take its place?

  • Alianora La Canta11/09/2009 at 02:04

    flav bought the ex-aguri motorhome? he coulda got the posh force india one if he’d waited {Comment #785}

Not likely - the posh Force India one has appeared in the Monza paddock. Now they're claiming the back-to-back races are responsible for the appearance of the tin shed.
