I am writing this as we record during the live rehearsals, so forgive me if it doesn't make any sense. We thought we would try practising some more stuff, so if you want to see what happened, then check it out here. These are some suggestions of topics from the live comments as we broadcast:
- Kathi pointed out that Keke Rosberg isn't a fan of Ari Vatanen, despite the fact that the entire Sidepodcast comments fell in love with him after this interview on the BBC. My only concern is that we like him just because he is not Max, but so far he seems to be saying all the right things.
- Steven Roy noted that this is our best chance to see KERS at work because the two McLarens are next to each other on the third row and they should be able to storm past at least Vettel if not more. How far will Lewis be able to get up the order with his new super-updated car?
- RG has come up with a schedule for the newly created Sidepodradio. This is so amazing, and I would like to see more suggestions for features, programmes and DJs. Oh, and if you want to donate a couple of grand so that we can actually set up a radio station, that would be good too.
That'll do it for now. I think there's also a race on today, so we'll be around for that as well. Don't forget to share your thoughts and predictions here and in the live threads. I'll see you in the comments.
*sits in new daily* :)
:D *reads daily*
Hello new daily thread
*Wonders where Saturday has gone, while reading the daily*
How is everyone doing this fine evening then?
So tired. :(
Fun evening though!
Have i missed anything important? I saw Q3!
Referencing the Daily post, you don't need a couple of grand to set it up SIdepodradio. Surely there is a way to leave the interface between the Podcast Making Thing and Skype, the hosts could do that somehow
i'm in such a good mood, although i'm a little sad i've now finished school until september...
Christine,
You didn't put a link to the live rehearsal. It says says check it out here but only as text
odd, doohickey didn't like that post, said i had an error
Seriously?!?! We had to keep going to the end of term last year.
Use your summer wisely young padwan...
....says the bottle boat building guy....
You don't like holidays??
For me it disappearing in an oasis of commenting, tweeting, and watching lots of sports on telly
Is it that bad? Is next year your last because that is scary!
I still have a week to go?. Grrr
I certainly don't enjoy the prospect of McLarens storming past Vettel :(
Don't say things like that. I'll cry
i do, but i miss school when i'm on holiday. plus it's all happened so quickly it doesn't feel like holidays yet.
Just think... many weeks break!
I can't imagine what being sad at not going to school would feel like.
i had to miss quali and come into school on a saturday... not nice ;)
You only have a few more years of long summer holidays. Make the most of them.
It will be beautiful!
yep next year is my last, and it makes me sad.
I finished college a month ago and don't start again until mid-September. I'm already bored mid-week evenings...
ahaha i like school though. i love the lessons and learning, i love being busy with prefect stuff, i love seeing my friends so much, and i just like it...
hahahaha. I'm so bored of the holidays now (uni broke up at the end of May), cannot wait until September so I can ditch the 9-5 and go back to studying.
But but but. We all know he'd struggle to overtake a cyclist :D
I don't know how much it would cost to make/run, but I was thinking more like so I could quit my job and run it :)
I was the same, a year after though, i wondered why...
Enjoy it while it lasts, but remember the best is yet to come!
We saw it at work at Silverstone in the Ferrari's they made up a lot of places from the start.
Sim racers - more Forza 3 info regarding online play.

What do you do at college?
I did accountancy and finished my final year 3 weeks ago. While I miss the people, I love the extra free time during the week.
Done, thanks Steven.
:D
I think he could do it if it rains!
And i really want him to prove me wrong (a little) ;)
If I had money I'd sponsor it.
I wonder if next season will see qualifying changed much. Race-fuel will obviously be gone (yay!) but the format, might that be changed? Personally my favourite was the single-lap. It might not be as exciting, but it was more pressure for drivers.
and suddently it goes quiet
am editting :) i enjoy looking through photos way too much. i've still got to look through the photos on the web from quali today :)
Aww. Don't tell Mr C or he'll hug you!
Who's someone here that like technology and cooking? I'm trying to find a host for SPC's version of BBC2's Sunday morning show - Something For The Race Weekend.
I like the way it is now, other than race fuel in Q3
Well, I would say me, but I don't know where I figure on these plans. What I can say is definitely NOT Mr C.
I love it, *hug*
I like the current format.
I think changing it would be one of the worst things the sport could do.
At least it keeps some drama throughout the hour, if someone has a better idea i would be happy to see that but not for 2 or 3 years ... please!
I hope you are posting lots and lots of piccies. Did you get any vids?
Flibster? he has a menu for each race weekend!
Technology, easy, Mr C.
Cooking, um, I don't think anyone here is really that good at it.
I loved the 12 laps in an hour format
i videod some of jenson's interview... just cause i knew i wasn't actually listening, i was just staring.
I can make toast
What would be the point of all the sessions if there's no fuel difference/any real difference between them at all?
What has he cooked?
It took me by surprise last time. :-)
Brilliant!
I cooked rice on a camping stove?
Flibster
How?
flibster is! Giggles seems to be good too. and LPG does some amazing cookies :)
A cupcake.
Same here
Did you eat it?
So what would you suggest?
I know, I forgot flibster :)
Did he do one for this week? I didn't see it.
Yes, it was nice.
An excitable man that doesn't actually exist apart from a hand, a knee and a voice, slightly drunk on rose wine who loves to hug people, owns a cog and the best laugh ever. How do we manage?
Tension and excitement.
I don't know! I didn't know I had to make valid suggestions! I just like complaining :P
not sure i haven't been around much this week...
Flibster it is then :D
He has been quiet for a few days.
I think I preferred single lap really. You get to see each driver doing a full lap, commentators talked beter with it I think. Pluss with the other formats, they can mess up and go again. Not with single lap.
So after the German music discussion earlier I've just put on Rammstein on Spotify. Grr.
Its a start then...
It could be a good show...
mmm cookies.
you can watch him making it, it's on the Brazilian parade lap from last year i think hehe :D
We got some really good ones in Waitrose today, walnut topped chocolate, oat and raisin ones. Big, chewy ones too.
I do like 'Sonne' :-D
Is it the microwave version?
i may have upset the man. he deleted his wiki profile :(
I've never watched anything else. When it's one lap do you go one at a time or can you go whenever you want within a certain timeframe? How do you get the tyres properly up for it, sometimes they're better on 2nd or 3rd flying lap right?
Watching drivers judging when to go out and having to really hang it out in cars with no fuel, qualifying tyres and hand grenade engines was awesome. Watching Senna prowl about the garage before his last run when you could feel the tension was more gripping than most quali sessions now.
I really don't get the point of watching quali now and finding out hours later who did a good job when the weights are released. Quali should be about the fastest car/ driver package and should be about one lap not 3 laps in different sessions.
Hier kommt die sonne!
Really? I must have missed the discussion.
ooh :(
Noticed he deleted the stuff, didn't know why though.
It's one at a time. They decided the order with a qualifying seession on the Friday. The fastest in that Friday session went last on Saturday. Loved watching Friday Qualifying at midnight tbh.
You got most of that with single-lap tbh.
Oh wait, do you think it's something to do with that debate him and Mr C had the other day?
I do remember him saying "Fine, I'll just go. TTFN". Hope that wasn't the last of him.
speaking of people disappearing, has Dom been around this weekend? or has he been absent since monaco? :(
Here comes the sun?
The problem with the single lap is it is down to luck. If it rains half way through the session the grid is decided by luck. If someone drops oil the next couple of cars are disadvantaged etc.
For me in any competition for it to be worthwhile everyone must have the same conditions.
Speaking of wiki, is it down for anyone else?
That wont be a problem next year though...
If they change it again I might give up watching :|
It was about audio formats IIRC, MP3 vs FLAC.
Only lasted until Monaco didn't it, before they dropped the Friday?
Ooh, its back, never mind me
So you prefer the best being in front, instead of some surprises?
No, it was about the future of broadcast television.
Hello all. Dinner is done and now to wait for the race, the F1 race, I'll ignore NASCAR
Lasted all of 2003 mate.
Surely the point is for the best to be at the front...
He wouldn't have left over that...
When was this? Mp3 all the way.
I was gonna say what about days like today where it's half wet/half dry. Seems a bit harsh
Thursday I think
Thanks for that.
Not at all. The drivers didn't jusge when to go. The circuit condition was just down to luck. There was no skill in judging when to go.
They did change something about qualifying in Monaco one year
Whats the point in Quali otherwise?
Huh?
Oh yeah, I think I remember it now. I remember being on the bus at the time stuck in traffic barely 400m from work because of it, watching it all via t'iPhone.
At least there'd be no gay "blocking" penalties though
Then the lovely minnows of Minardi get there moment in the sun.
The current system is about the best being moved around a bit to stop them driving away from the field on Sunday
Bang Bang!
On single-lap? I think it has happened. A guy on his flyer meeting a guy goign too slow on his in-lap.
As much as I love the qualifying system as it is now, it certainly hasn;t worked for that reason.
or for 2009 at least I mean. I'm too tired to think about last year. :P
Absolutely. It is a competition and excellence should be rewarded. Otherwise you may as well drwa lots or use the karting software that shuffles the grids so that over a number of races everyone gets a similar range of qualifying positions.
Ping Jay?
They did but I can't remember what
I loved single lap, because you could watch 1 car on the edge, and see the driver trying as hard as possible, for 1 lap, rather than just for bits of laps
As in everyone's on pole at least once?
Was that when they had the aggregate times added from two sessions?
Part of why I loved it, yeah.
A downside for a driver though is if you're in the middle and have a shot at pole, you won't know until the end, all you can do is sit and wait.
Didn't they just announce in Monaco 2005 that that 2 part aggregate session on Saturday and Sunday morning would be scrapped in favour of the single lap?
IThey had that from the start of 2005. Worst qualifying format ever.
I think the Monaco thign might have been letting cars finish their laps in 2006 after the flag dropped.
It's the same in lots of other sports like that though, like skiing and such. I wish it was DTM-esq, the Q1 and Q2 we know now, and then a one lap thing for the final 10
The reason for the current system is to cover Max's embarrassment. He made a lot of comments about improving overtaking and improving the show. He pushed through the grooved tyres, high aero formula when everyone said it was insane. When that didn't work he started looking for artificial ways to shuffle the grid. That is why we have the nonsense of qualifying with race fuel. It is just an artificial feature to shuffle the order. It is not F1.
Ah yeah. I think France must have been nearby in the calendar because Minardi got pole and the top teams complained about it. Friday was dry, Sat was wet. Minardi got a dry time on Sat then it rained, so they were on pole.
he'l be back, i'm sure. he just deleted his profile soon after. seemed like a perfectly normal sidepodcast discussion to me.
That's absolutely the best bit.... I love that part of sporting competitions, watching people who can't do any more as other people go!
DTM has 3 sessions though, with 5 dropping out after each just leaving the top 5 with a lap each for pole in Q4, right?
Their fastest time was on the Friday. Saturday was dry so they were at the back where they reigned supreme.
It depends on the number of cars versus the number of races but effectively everyone has a few races near the front, a few in the middle and a few nearthe back
But didn't that format give that amazing Japan 05 race?
That is a good call I think. Another artificial addition to make people run on wet Saturday qualifying.
I'm sure it had been wet for the whole session, then the track dried out and Verstappen stuck it on provisional pole.
oh i know, but i meant the top 10 bit coming from dtm
Yes, on the Friday.
i've just realised jenson has a bright orange porsche... awesome!
I still watch the tape of Kimi running through the feild
He has a big Merc as well.
Webber's got a Porsche Carrera GT!
Oh dear...
Well he kinda does...
Potentially my favourite race of all time
How did you come to this revelation?
But it's totally ridiculous. You can't do that as a tactic for "interesting" racing. It's not very sporting
No he does have a Merc road car.
Again, he kinda does, according to his own words.
Tell that to Paul Stoddart. He shot his mouth off if he thought his pet dog was getting a bigger share than he did.
which means "its mine as long as Brawn have merc engines"
erm....there was a piccy of it next to his motorhome at goodwood....
There was an interview with Jardine at Goodwood where he said he basically went off with a Mercedes that he was given to test drive or something, I can't remember the full story, but it's not technically his... but it's his. Don't ask, liek I say I can't remember the full story properly
I don't think the drama was manufactured, like it is in NASCAR. Kimi was legitametly it might have been because of an engine change or something.
can't remember
More F1 drivers' cars:
Vettel - BMW M5
Trulli - Fiat 500
Massa - Maserati Quattroporte
Kimi - Alfa 159
Hamilton - Merc GL420D
Glock - Lexus IS-F
Alonso - Renault Megane Coupe
it was something like, he had wanted to drive this car, and merc said to him he could give it a text drive, and he absolutely loved it. So merc said they would 'loan' it to him. so he has a lovely new merc.
you know he gives lots of money to one of those companies that let you rent out supercars?
i suspect he has an orange porsche... this week.
That sounds better than what my mind was saying :P
I might be 12 and a half hours behind on this... but did the BBC use Merc Advertising as backing music!?
I want a refund!
The format was not the aggregrate, but the Mclarens were 17th and 18 starting. It rained during qualy and I think Kimi was trying to beat the rain on slicks (grooved) and it caught him out and ruined his run
Merc S320 CDi to be exact.
I really, really, really heart Saturdays on Sidepodradio. Just sayin'.
does he?
i'm lost for words, that's brilliant! :P
Japan '05 was single lap qualifying but the order in which the driver did their lap depended on the result from the last race (I think) so the person who won the last race did his lap last. And it started to rain just as the good guys did their lap which threw them at the end of the grid
I wanna do this every week
Same.
Should we just do a "radio show" in the comment based on the schedule? :D
I blame Steven if it all goes wrong. ;)
Ralf was on pole at Japan 2005(!)
That's the problem that Max has created in F1. Before Max F1 was a sport and people watched the sport and understood that. Max was made FIA president to make Bernie money and to do that he had to increase TV audiences. As a result instead of being a sport for people which people watched and learned it became an entertainment for that audience.
So instead of people watching it as a sport and realising that in a one hour quali session there were perfectly good reasons why no-one ran in the first 15 minutes it had to be "entertaining" for the full hour to keep the casual viewer tuned to that channel.
Over the time he has been in office the "sport" has constantly been moved towards entertainment so thinkg like fairness and honest competition have been dropped to get eyeballs in front of screens to put dollars in Bernie's pocket.
yup. i remember he did promotion for them, may be in f1r? it was two or so years ago, and maybe he stopped now. but he was at honda at the time.
it's a company that only talks to people how live in monaco and i think you get a get a fortnight or something.
he was a fan.
ooh Kathi¬!
can you translate some Finnish for me?
Sounds good to me.
What did Paul Stoddart ever do for F1?
*get a car...
Apparently in 2005, they had sat and sun laps, then it got changed to just Saturdays 1 lap with race fuel, and if i remember it was wetest when the fast guys went out (first i believe) and the track dried.
I can try
I don't think that was doing to Max though - I think that was down to a general culture shift in sport, which means every sport has to be entertaining at all times.
I really don't know. He tried to get more for the little guys, but they're still trying that in 09, so he didn't do much. I love the guy anyway.
Either way it shows money can't buy taste
Oops... dont worry.. I cant get to my birthday card!
cool. if i had the money i'd want to rent a super car too... maybe not every week though...
Wasn't that the year they had to cancel qualifying because of the monsoon warning with already those kinda levels of rain and instead ITV showed a documentary of Murray Walker?
Does that mean we can look forward to more?
I want a Lambo Gallardo. 4WD, 500hp, V10, plus it's a Lambo. Perfection in my eyes :D
Probably. I wonder what they'd do if a race was cancelled because of weather.
Not promising nothing, but we have made it much easier to go live, instead of having to rearrange our house every Sunday. So... there could be more.
I meant to quote that. Oh well.
Wikipedia said it, so i must be right ;)
I would say you'd award positions based on quali but that wouldnt be fair, i think you just scrap the round.
Max did it in F1 and F1 has moved more than any other sport.
That would be the 2004 Japan GP
It got changed to 1 day qualy early in the season, the USGP had only 1 day qualy....then 6 cars racing
I remeber ther was one race where they had to move the quali from sat to sun and afterwards they thought Hey what a great idea let's do that for 2005. So I guess it was 2004
I can't stand him. He arrived in F1 talking about everything he was going to achieve and left having done nothing. The only little guy he tried to get anything for was himself.
I got one wrong? That rarely happens.
Changing from a 2 day to 1 day"....took effect at the European Grand Prix on May 29."
Oh good
Sounds like Toyota. I really love hating that team.
Ok
Noooo!!! I'm watching a retro press conference.
I miss peter windsor
Much the same except you rarely hear them say anything. They talked a lot when they arrived but have sat quietly in a corner since.
I will drop a pic tomorrow ;)
This is really nosey but how so?
What do you do at college?
I did accountancy and finished my final year 3 weeks ago. While I miss the people, I love the extra free time during the week. {Comment #32}
I did Text Processing Level 3. I've definitely passed and may have a distinction (depending on resit results).
Next year I want to do medical and legal text/audio processing, plus GCSE Psychology.
I go to an evening college (I still say "go to" because I plan to go back next year and in effect this is simply a summer holiday between courses).
Does James Allen doing the PC also mean a will be taking over Peter Windsor's role hosting the FIA Gala in December?
Is that shown on tv?
Just by putting some thought into it really. We used to have to thread cables around, move bits here and there, put the camera up on a pole.
Now the camera is relatively motionless and requires no effort, same with the backdrop. We've put a lot of thought into our cables as well, so that those that can be permanent are and those that need sorting are easy to reach.
Eurosport (last years is on the drop somewhere)
you know in the trucks that the teams bring to events like goodwood? well i'm just looking at the pics i look of the inside brawn's. They appear to have two clocks in it. i find this strange.
*took
They did change something about qualifying in Monaco one year {Comment #109}
That was 2005, when they dropped the Sunday morning qualifying session after working out that people didn't want to watch four hours of F1 in one day - assuming they even had a choice in the matter.
One for local time and one for factory time or one for Japan time
ok. Btw Happy Birthday. Just slightly late :)
uk time and local time?
whos birthday?
aahhh that makes sense. sorry i had a strange moment there.... but why japan time?
Congrats!
I'm not sure what this means, it sounds technical.
Do you also work? Is that a pain to do evening courses as well?
Nick's
On single-lap? I think it has happened. A guy on his flyer meeting a guy goign too slow on his in-lap. {Comment #117}
Takuma Sato, Turkey 2005. He was slow slow on the in-lap that the next car met him in the middle of Turn 8...
Cool. Cables are a pain.
Ah yes, yesterday if i remember
Don't start with that again. Who's on first? Who's birthday. What is his name?
Honda
but...?...
Have you seen some of the pit wall radio labels? Teams are hardly up to date.
Nostalgic?
hehe thanks
*hic* ;)
How do you remember this?
sidepodspace update
The shuttle launch is now scheduled for 7:13 pm Eastern tomorrow night or 00:13am UK time. Weather is now predicted to be 60% acceptable.
Any predictions as to why it won't go this time?
I'm off guys, enjoy the rest of Up All Night and I shall see you all for the Parade Lap, maybe beforehand even. Morning all ;)
no. i've not seen any photos that i remember, not having seen it myself i wouldn't know ;)
Presumably it is last year's truck
But didn’t that format give that amazing Japan 05 race? {Comment #137}
No, rain gave us the amazing Japan 2005 race.
Hmm. We have posted lots before, I'll have to have a look.
See ya.
Morning everyone.
weather
oh man, i've been reading the wiki page on the 2005 season. It was so good.
#f1happyplace
Hi Sean
oh. i must have forgotten. sorry.
Night Scott
night Scott.
In fairness, Honda are paying some of the bills this year. It's not totally strange that Brawn want to keep tabs on them.
Night Scott
Morning Sean
Except for Indy..my first F1 race.
Night Mr Woodwiss
Yeah, Rain and that format
I have been invited on to a new IndyCar podcast
Oh man! Thats bad, why did you stick around?
What was th lightning like Joe? NASA are claiming 11 strikes around the shuttle which seems an awful lot even with the lightning conductors
oh wow. :D
I find it amazing you are still watching...
Did you get free tickets for 06?
Oooh, cool!
That sounds awesome.
Have fun with that and let us know when it is available
lou. what times to the clocks read, and are either the same as the time that you took the picture?
The east coast gets alot stronger storms. I'm on the west coast but I am a weather radar geek and it's always bad up there
Hello and goodbye respectively.
With your Homezilla?
You want facts?
What was so wrong with it? Was that when the whole team orders malarkey came to a head? Wasn't it just playing fair (shumi style)?
The guy is only 16. Do you follow Planet IRL either on blog or Twitter?
Haha! No it is a different guy.
It was when the Michelin tyres were declared unsafe and all the Michelin runners pulled in after one lap. The "race£ was "contested" by two Ferraris, two Jordans and two Minardis. Itwas a complete farce.
i went to far again, didn't i?
Thanks. It is his first show and his new regular co-host is not available for the recording on Weds or Thurs. Since he's in the US I need to make sure the timezones work before agreeing.
I never lost the faith. Yes free tickets, but airfare, car rental...etc is the real drain on money. At the 2006, Michelin was falling all over itself to show how nice they were. You couldn't go 10 feet without the Michelin Man offering you a t-shirt or hat
But in hindsight, was totally the right call
Oh. Was it Indy a different year Shumi went mad and lost on purpose.....
I hope you took full advantage!
i can only see the time on one of the clocks... cause there is a reflection on the other, and it's like 10:45... i took the photo in the evening so no it's not the same time.
wasn't that china?
No it wasn't. They should have put the chicane in.
:P
I can proudly say I do NOT have a michelin t-shirt or hat. But the free tickets were a nice touch
It was Indy when Schumi dominated and they staged a photo finish, only for Schumi to let off the gas too soon and let Ruby2B win by 0.1s
i'm with steven. uk and japan.
I think they had plenty o time to come up with a solution. The trouble is that the people who could make decisions were not there and used the situation to help their team.
No. He tried to stage a dead heat at Indy.
i should have volunteered to change their clocks for them in preparation for Germany :P
ahh, yes.
I think that was 2004. Schumi won in 2005, but coming out of the pits almost took out Ruebens. Now that would have been great, Two Jordans and a Minardi on the podium
At least they tried.
To be honest It was really Mosely-Ferrari who should have been sucking up to the fans.
Not that either of them know how to do that
Yeah but from a race situation, they hadn't sorted anything else out. and i'd prefer to see 6 cars running, to 20 cars running with 14 pitting every lap
You can add it to your list of questions for Jules
Nick Heidfeld in a McLaren at Goodwood, this lap still holds the outright record.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYY-WkPnUbg
They'd have been better being sporting and all pulling out
If I rememebr right, all teams but Ferrari were in favour of putting in the chicane. I dunno whether I'm for or against the idea.
ok :)
Michelin had alternative tyres available but were not allowed to ship them. Th michelin teams offered to run witthout the possibility of getting points but Max said no.
True, but from what I heard Michelin never tested a tire on Indy's surface, but Bridgestone did
From a business bernie perspective, that wouldnt be viable
Bridgestone run most of the oval series, so they have alot of data
I don't think Bridgestone test F1 tyres on it... by they did have access to the Firestone IRL data
Possibly.... I dont think you can really count it though
Sounds right, i forget.
All i remember is schumey nearly taking Rubens out, and Ted standing in a group of angry fans.
Or shipping the tyres, or lending them Bridgestones or anything really
Why?
not true. they ran a test and realised that no tyres could help them.
dubious though. with no points on offer, they could easily have piled in to the ferrari's and stuffed their day.
i'm not defending anyone, just saying.
James May just started his interview with Jonathan Ross on BBC 1. I saw it last night and he was quite good.
bridgestone tested under the firestone brand (with irl cars?) and realised their would be trouble.
Neither of them did as far as I am away.
That is an issiue, but the real one is that when there was a problem, Ferrari and Mosely blocked every solution.
didn't they have to bail from a test around that period, because all of their firesrtone's exploded too?
Didn't they also ask to run on Bridgestones?
agreed.
You could do that any day though. I mean you have two cars for a reason ;)
bridgestone didn't bring enough.
and even so, that's competitor data right there.
I don't think they tested F1 tyres, but they already knew there would be trouble because IMS had just finished diamond-grinding the track surface.
My goodwood you tubing ends here..
Stiffest and most unstable car ever? I think so
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQ7gFfWZKWU&feature=related
but you'd risk losing points to your teammate or whoever. no points = no penalties. you can't race like that.
I don't remember that. NASCAR has had trouble at Indy but Firestone hasn't.
I thought they had another tyre which they thought might work, but werent sure so they wanted to fly them over to give them a go...
Max just said this was not acceptable during a race weekend
i read somewhere a firestone test had to be called off though? they came back again with stiffer sidewalls,
No, exactly and I'm sure you'd get penalties the next race for going on a kamikaze run
they did. and they were allowed a test run to prove that they would help, and they didn't the tyres sitting in barca (maybe?), were of a spec no different to the ones in the states.
it would have helped if it was a batch issue, but it was simple a design problem.
Was that at Indy? I don't remember.
hmm. i have no idea. this was years ago :)
Modern F1 cars have been banned from being timed ever since...
You cant really have a record which noone else is allowed the tools to break it with
It looked more like he was hanging on than driving. The slow car in front could have been nasty.
I guess so, the times of the non-f1 cars aren't a million miles away
Adam Cooper was writing dynamite stuff on this for Autosport.com at the time. He said the Bridgestone design suited IMS and the Michelin which relied on chemical grip wasn't at all suitable.
x1 digest:

second one on its way.
mmmmm
#f1nostalgia
night all :)
night jon.
G'night sir
Night Jon
Also there is the fact that Johhny Herbert has turned goodwood into a burnout/donut fest!
Knight
byeeeee
I may be drunk
night Jon
I'll have to wait for tommorrow night, at work at the moment
Just watched one of McRae's final runs, he was on for a stonking time but did a doughnut half way through
shame
oooh... Me too!
How did your daytime drinking go?
I'd be on the floor by this point if I'd starting during the day.
Colin or Alister? Was Alister there last week?
*cough*
012128 87225
Colin
Right, i actually am going
Very well :D
3 Pubs... All very different!
Not a chance!
I did consider attempting to skype into the live rehearsal to find out what was going on.
But i thought the C's deserved some peace and quiet ;)
Different atmos?
why are you in my skype contacts?
Yeah, different prices, people, and locations.
we didnt lose anyone though!
And here is the second one:
http://www.sidepodcast.com/2009/07/12/f1-digest-2009-germany-qualifying/
With that, a goodnight.
good night, looking forward to more live rehersals
Cool, I like that. I assume one was relaxed, one was jumping, one was a bit chavvy.
That's the main thing!
I was on a show where you were the Skype host.
Nighty night.
I’m not sure what this means, it sounds technical. {Comment #218}
Text processing is taking a document and reproducing it. These days it's all done in a word processor, but in theory the exam can be done on a typewriter.
Audio processing is listening to what someone says and typing it word-for-word into a computer.
Medical and legal are the two specialities involved - each has its own jargon.
One was cheap and busy, by trafalgar sq, the other had a balcony over covent garden. the third was walkabout in club mode.
So pretty much right!
Ah right. Sounds repetitive. I'm allowed to say this because I work in accounts, which is repetitive.
.
This sounds complicated.
Do you also work? Is that a pain to do evening courses as well? {Comment #218}
I did work part-time during part of the course. The job was on a different day to the course, so there was no problem. I don't work at the moment.
Night!
Am envious of being in London.
I rename all contacts so that I find all podcasters easily. I just can't remember editing your contact, but there you are. I'm getting old.
Night Christine
Ah right. Sounds repetitive. I’m allowed to say this because I work in accounts, which is repetitive. {Comment #353}
I like repetitive :)
Which Walkabout, Shaftesbury Avenue?
I don't know what to say..
How do you remember this? {Comment #229}
It's one of those things - my brain is good at remembering trivia but not necessarily the stuff it's supposed to remember!
Hey guys, just relocated to the dayroom.
The one in covent garden,
Its much friendlier ;)
Is Peter Windsor still on Speed TV?
Did he say anything about the meeting the other day?
Yes, he still reports from the pits and will do the grid walk. No no info on the meeting
What's a walkabout?
Hehe, its a chain of Australian bars
Aussie themed sports bar.
aha. never been to that one.
They called the open pits on thursday at the USGP, the Pit Walkabout. Lots of beer and race cars, so I guess it's similar
I would tell you where it is, but it seems to move every time i go there, depending on how much i have had to drink :D
phew editing all done. i'll put goodwood photos up tomorrow, but now i must sleep. night all! x
Night!
A 'Walkabout' is I think an Aboriginal Australian thing. Going into the wilderness.
:) yeah, I've never gone into walkabout sober, it's a weird thing.
look fwd to it!
Night Lou. look forward to the pics
Right... Beddddd
It sounds so tempting and it is all mine!
I appear to have drunk an entire bottle of red
Night all!
night Nick & Lou
Night
Night those leaving
And I'm at work. Looking forward to tommorrow. The F1 race in the US will not be until 1500, Beer and F1. I just have to aviod a computer for the bulk of the day
I want an entire bottle of red. I'd prefer an entire bottle of Red Label though. But I'd settle for either.
At work at 9pm Saturday??
24 hrs, fire department. I get off at 0800 sunday
that's a big huge ouch
Red Label? Is that a whisk(e)y?
Tape delays hurt
It's not bad at all. 24 on, 48 off. I'm at a slow station so I get to hang out on the live doohickey.
tbh I'm impressed at how I'm able to comment reasonably well through the drunken dizzieness
I'm trying to figure out why I still don't feel tired even though it's nearly 2:30am.
they suck! Bernie apparently has decreed that four races in the US must be broadcast by a noncable channel, FOX. I know I won't be able to stay away from my computer, the Indycar race is on at 1300 from Toronto
24 on?? You must get thru muchos coffee or Red Bull.
At least it is slow.
I do pretty good myself
I'm wondering the same. I was up early for a Saturday too.
How did it get that late? I'm going to head for sleeps, then. Night all!
I slept about five hours earlier today,so I'll be up for a while
I can see his thinking. He's chasing ratings and hoping to move all 17 to network. for reasons you know already it won't work.
Night. I should too but I don;t want to
We have the same commentators as SPEED, but when it's on Fox they have to act like the viewers no nothing about F1 and explain it over and over
2 thoughts.
1. Sounds like BBC MotoGP.
2. Over and over and over and over, just like a monkey with a miniature cymbal. (Hot Chip, 2006)
F1 has it's audience in the US, it likely won't change no matter how long you delay the broadcast. I personally love the races on at 0800. I get up, get some coffee, the sunday paper and watch the race. Then I have the rest of the day to do whatever, mow the yard, play blackjack, drink beer
I'm learning this, slowly. Saturday I had to be up at 10 for something. A revelation. Usually I sleep til 11.30am at the earliest.
I can't sleep past 0830 anymore. So no matter how hung over I am, I can still get up to watch F1
I just hit the wall, gotta sleep. Hope to be here for Parade Lap, realistically it will probably be just as the BBC coverage starts. night
sleep tight
Staying up late means late sleeps for me.
That's a valid point. I took a day off a week ago and before I knew it it was 0200. I think I slept till around 0900 and went back to bed at 1030
But you could still get 8 hours sleep and be awake for the Parade Lap.....
Looking for a NASCAR or F1 Classics stream - but it looks like JTV has just collapsed.
I blame UFC 100.
Listening to Chris Moyles Friday - he interviewed Jake!
And even better - Jake predicted Webber for pole! He got that right.
He predicted him for the win too - will he get this right too?
I missed rehearsals? boo sleep
Best bit of the rehearsals: Sidepodradio!
And get this: they want to hear
.
Haha!
eheheh can I play lots of Backstreet Boys? :D :D :D
I see I also get a weights pre release show. I think it'd go like this:
"refreshed. not up yet. refreshed. not up yet. refreshed. not up yet. refreshed. oooh there they are"
I wouldn't mind, but they aren't podsafe, are they? ;)
Maybe we can speculate? And speculate some more? Or we can also make an intelligent guess based on historical data (from Gavin). You can also promote Alia's comparitor. :D
We all just record acapella versions of our favourite songs and send them in?
Morning All
Ello all,
Just thought i'd stick my head in and say hi, and thanks to y'all who were around last night, it was so much fun!!!
I won't be around for the parade lap (double boo) or the race (boo) but i'll listen to them when i get home!!
Speak to y'all later!
See you Jon
Sounds like we have our first competition already. :D
Morning, Jeremy!
Morning Journeyer
Morning, Chris. :)
I can't wait for the race!
Me too. But we're still just under 4 hours to go!
Morning everyone :)
And I am going to try of Skype for the first time during the parade lap to either call in or leave a voice mail
Morning Alex
Excellent! :D
sidepodcast radio? what have i missed?
morning all.
Just listening to the live goodness from last night.
Excellent well I think we'll be looking for callers for the competition.
gd gd
Looks like people may have missed the http://drop.io/sidepodcast that I made last night. I am feeling a little more delicate than I might this morning.
a live rehearsal + live quail and practice cast
Good day of sport for me:
UFC 100 (done)
College Hoops (ongoing)
F1 (Parade Lap + Race)
Tour De France
Just loving it today. :)
What are these two?
Is there GP2 today
I'm also looking forward to the F1/Tour De France double act. I'm disappointed to have left France without seeing it, but I'd rather watch it on TV.
i think so
http://www.gp2series.com/en/website/2009gp2series/home/homegp2/
UFC is Mixed-Martial Arts. Think Wrestling, but for real.
College Hoops is our local college basketball. We already played yesterday (and lost badly - rebuilding year); our longtime rivals (rivalry spanning 50 years) are playing this season's host (who are one of the season favorites) right now.
I've just missed the repeat of the Race 1 GP2 next up is Race 2 live
starts in 2 minutes i think. live timing is on the site
http://www.gp2series.com/en/website/2009gp2series/live/
not sure about a feed though.
And these are on tv Journeyer?
Yes to both! :D Our TV, anyway.
did you have to pay for UFC? I lol at people who actually pay money for pay per view events.
GP2 on Eurosport 2 Live
Nope, twas free-to-view on cable. And cable here is VERY cheap (10 pounds a month).
it's about now i miss living out of a suitcase in hotels...
ahh sweet, the company I work for charges $34.95 and everytime I hear someone order it I want to yell at them HAVE YOU NOT HEARD OF THE INTERNET
hehe :)
You don't like your company very much, do you?
Morning :)
Morning
Morning, Rachel!
I just don't fully understand pay TV! Piracy is far easier?
Morning Amy
morning :) anyone got a feed for the gp2? i see two cars are stopped already.
Just looking at rainfall radar - it would appear to be raining at Nurburgring at the moment, but it should clear in time for the F1 race :)
Am struggling to find one too.
Dry race is good. :D
@Amy & Nick:
my sudden disappearance on friday night was not as a result of the lawyer seeing what I was writing about, but more that the wireless in the airport dropped out.
Really excited by the musical selection last night :)
the sneaky sneaky FIA used a different URL for the weights, so your script writing was in vain :D
GP2 race: http://de.justin.tv/jonny_tv5
that's why I discovered it first. ;)
oh really. it's a good thing i didn't come in to the office to make it run.
do you have the link handy? i'm writing a new script to sort it out by grid position to save us having to do maths.
legend!
Thanks, Rachel!
so it's amy-journey-scott at 1 all then in the greatest competition ever? (tongue in cheek)
gtg see you all for the parade lap
Morning.
Mr C has a hangover and I haven't been this tired for a long time. Should be a good show!
Why, yes! :D
I'm sure it'll be mega. :D
Sounds like we need a wiki league table!
I was going to suggest you come work at Apple but now....
Morning:) Oh please don't let it get to competition level. It's a service and we just all want to be first.
I noticed last race that one or two documents had a weird name, but the weights had the same format. I might have to tweak the new script.
the weather on the gp2 looks nasty...
Did you see my drinks selection on drop.io?
I think we'll all be on the same page...
:D
Noooo. Sidepodcast does not advocate piracy. Disclaimer over.
think it might have been a once off - they released it with all the other fia documents rather than in the right 'weights' place, then they moved it later
How was that Blade of Grass?
Oh hi everybody
Apparently it isn't actually raining - but it's so cold the track isn't drying out :(
I also got sent a DM on Twitter from someone who I think enjoyed telling me the McLaren weights before I'd seen them myself.
Indeed.
that would be my guess. They've had a pattern, and they broke it. not the normal pattern you'd get from a well organised system. oh wait - that fits in well with the FIA ;)
The words of Amy do not necessarily represent the views of Amy. Or Sidepodcast. :D
It was pretty good. I sent a video mentioning you in it....
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/img-0733
Did we get any video like last time? That's fun.
Cor. You answered my question before I asked it!
Phew, I was scared it would be bad...
Great vid anywho
re GP2: why are the cars going past each other? how does that happen?
Two videos... They were all going up there during the live show I think but I guess you were all quite reasonably distracted....
There's another video here of the making of a cocktail
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/img-0753
And I did manage to find another Eldeflower cocktail
Maybe I'm more on the ball than I thought.
Although not as much on the ball as you and Mr C will be during the show - kertish!
GP2 commentator: "That is woeful. That is so lame."
:D
And of course, he's referring to the stewards. ;)
commentary "the team are professionals, the drivers are professionals, the sport is governed by idiots"
Rather honest there. :D
i like the fact that the commentators stopped themselves short of getting into a long rant about how bad it is. but really making the case for stewards to be ex drviers
commentators saying "WTF" !?
If I wanted openness and honesty I'd watch... oh wait :D
GP2 commentators >>>>> Brundel/Legard
the muppets?
I know!
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>JA ?
Brundle is very good; Legard not so. :)
:D
more great commentary: "God really is a German"
Vettel must be praying God IS a German.
;) I'm hoping for a RBR win, but not that guy! he can come second...
If god is a German, wont it finish Vettel-Glock-Heidfeld-Rosberg-Sutil?
We've just had Herbert Adams King Island Gourmet Premium pies and vegetables for dinner. No sugar yet. I still have time to duck out to the shops though.
While we're here, any predictions for the race?
Button-Barrichello-Webber
without getting into a religious discussion...the GP2 race was really interesting with overtaking. We rarely see that in F1 - so I'm thinking there are different gods of motorsport. the lesser one being for A1GP. we should give them all names.
Webbbaaaaah and Go Lewis, then Button and Barrichello
Webber
Vettel
Button
Lewis
Sutil
Kov
Haven't even gave it a thought. Will share in parade lap.
Webber-Vettel-Sutil
:D
I think I might have to agree with that. I'm just looking at the weights and stunned at how heavy webber was. that's nota good thing. likewise for vettel.
Are we in for an RG mega prediction
Webber - Vettel - Hamilton - Kovalienen - Barichello - Button - Sutil - Massa
Oh yeah.
when was the last time anyone had HAM in the top 6? !
Oooh, almost forgot - Sutil will be 5th, I think. Fearless forecast. :D
Australia I think
GP2 exclusive theory: Grosjean for Ferrari
I'm happy for sutil to get 7th with the most amount of fuel
Brazil? lol
? Rosberg is heaviest. or do you mean something else?
:)
They corrected themselves and said Hulkenberg.
That said, they're pretty sure that Alonso is going to Ferrari - for 8 million quid, too.
You haven't got a 4th... Do you mind that?
Ooooh... I'll say Hamilton.
would be funnier if it was 8 million Squid.
:D
:D
Morning
howdy and welcome to spending your sunday indoors :)
Morning I'm back and ready for the show!!
Good weekend for Hulkenberg - Willi Weber must be very happy. :D
]
Every single race. Or did you mean sensible predictions? :-)
It starts at 11am ish. Just so you know.
hehe
I Know
Haha. I've watched the Parade Lap here before (then erm left for the race)
Just powering up my netbook for skype
so 40 minutes.
?sensible predictions. exactly :)
Was there a blog yesterday with first pit stop estimates!!
I've got the weights sorted. should i post them here? no lap numbers though. i'm sure someone did a blog but i havne't looked? here's the top 6

Have a look here Chris
http://www.jamesallenonf1.com/
Yeah no leaving for the race. I'd like to second that for new people to be on the show. We love new people (but still appreciate the regulars)
Alinora did a post - http://formula1home.com/forum/weblog_entry.php?e=790
and so did Ollie - http://blogf1.co.uk/2009/07/11/germany-2009-post-qualifying-car-weights/

Thanks Rachel
only 23. i can't believe you did the whole grid.
I'm in a bit of a bizare home situation at the moment in that I'm not in the same place as my stuff. Lemme just check but I think my skype phone is elsewhere
Did it last time :)
:D
(thats better.)
once you found a niche you should stick with it.
Well let us know!
Skype setup and tested, my skype id is chris_Humphreys_f1 , feel free to call me Alex during the show!
Hamilton: McLaren will win again soon
I think he needs to wait and see how McLaren shape up in the race today and the next race in Hungary, because after Bahrain it seemed they would be back quite quickly and then those developments didn't work out so well at the following races.
Also for anyone who is around there is a competition in the show - the details are here:
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Yes-No+Competition
Yes I will, I am brill at them!!
de.justin.tv/jonny_tv5 showing live bbc red button feed (showing qualy from yesterday - about to show Q3
You can't have Hamilton and Button crashing into each other....
I'd go for
Vettel
Rubens
Massa
Hamilton
Sutil
Maybe that's less a prediction and more a happy dream.
No, no skype phone I'm afraid. I'll call you next race shouldn't be at work then.
my mac regenerated.
*flop*
Hullo.
I'm never gonna touch another drop!
me neither.
No skype call from me today, so I will remain a mystery for a bit longer, because well I don't have skype :P
Any one else using the F1 app during the race!!
oh dear...
I never used skype before.
Just droping ya in.
do you have a phone?
What's wrong?
hehe, tis witchcraft!
wine got under the screen (no idea how these things happen). woke up and it's all fixed again.
oops
right, I'm full of dinner and in such a food coma that I can't move. This means one thing and one thing only - I'm ready for the parade lap.
What is this phone you speak of?
:P
Phew...
I've been listening to last night's show... I have just got to the bit where you were finished and there was an hour to go.
:)
ahh yeah. that was the best bit :)
Your mac is hungover too?
Tell me your secret, I can't get the replay to load.
That's what we need for the parade lap... captive audience.
I threw crisps all over my keyboard in my sleep. Can Giggles fix that for me??
the file is massive. you just have to be patient, but it will load.
twas a 2.5hr show.
I thought Christine said it wasn't a show? ;)
It took ages for it to start for me.
I can't promise not to fall asleep though. Food coma = sleepy, as digesting takes far too many of my resources.
What time did the live rehearsal finish last night then?
I leavt about 12:10
h.264 appears to have file size limit. after which it becomes unusable as a format.
i think we found that limit :)
Chur. Patient I can do, I'm not moving from this spot for the rest of my life.
Heikki will make you move if he manages a win. :D
About 12:45 I think...
I might pass out from the shock.
wow I think I will watch the last 30 minutes this afternoon, What happen after the quail and practice casts where recorded!
:D
That is what the replay is for.
ok kl
Erm nothing! We talked about how the daily was late, then we wrote it for Christine :P
I'm just going to mention Steven Roy's name. He hasn't seemed to remember the start time of the Parade lap for the last couple of weeks, but if you mention his name he usually appears
Morning guys! It's gonna be a great day's racing, let's hope! :P
In other words....Christine doesn't remember :P
I remember. I was there.
That's what rose wine does to a podcasting genius. ;)
Hey, it's not me with the hangover this morning.
Does Mr C remember what he was doing last night?
I thought it was me with the hangover :P
:)
He knows he spilt wine on his Mac. That's probably about it.
No memories of the flying panda, then?
Oh yeah, I remember now, with the panda in the back of the shot at the end. That was funny :D
Will it live?
Morning!
After a miserable few weeks for F1 who's excited about what today's race might throw up! :-D
I really am :)
Any predictions for the race?
It wasn't looking perky in the early hours but apparently regenerated overnight.
I read that wrong for a sec and thought you were so excited you were going to vomit!
Maybe it was wearing it's Apple Rain Mac?
you should get one of these
http://www.clitheroelancs.co.uk/id8.htm
Hmm. Lots
When will I need to use my keyboard underwater? :D
Is it going to be fine or rainy for the race?
The new live commenting experience.
Lovely people: http://www.sidepodcast.com/2009/07/12/live-just-an-f1-minute/
Very useful for F1 drivers trying to tweet from their cars during the rain.
w00t! :D
Hi all, has anyone heard what the weather is like in Germany for the race?
Webber is in a massively strong position but this nagging voice at the back of my head keeps reminding me about what happened last time he started on the front row and a wet race was in store ...
we've had people comment from all sorts of places. I challenge everyone to be the first for underwater or in space. damages are not my fault.
and you have to be immersed in water.
Wet apparently. I'll check me gadgets.
Earlier they seemed to be saying that it had been raining in the morning but would be sunny later
True, but I'm not an F1 driver :P
BBC thinks wet http://news.bbc.co.uk/weather/forecast/5002
Or actually "Light Showers"
Showers are probably the most amusing thing to watch drivers deal with. Spin spin spin.
@Amy What did you have for dinner?
Roast beef, and then for pudding I had quite literally 34 litres of custard with raspberries.
cricket: 164 for 7. australia for a double act today :)
sidepodspace update
Today's putative shuttle launch is on schedule. They are currently one hour into the three hour external tank filling process. I wonder how much Shell super fuel stuff you could pump in three hours? Anyway as of now there is exactly 8 hours ish until the thing is meant ot fly.
I like the daily thread :)
It's warm
me too
Don't forget, if you want a shoutout for your Fantasy Racers team, just comment with #fr.
Eeeek, highest ever race position, 514th. 682 pts.
*settles down with a class of ice cold diet coke in the daily thread*
Aww 93rd.
Best score for this race
1107 - Someone called Kathi
okay i'll try again...
Honda's helping hand would like to express their joy at seeing that they are now 53rd and still ahead of Sidepodcast racers #fr
:D
Diet coke;s disgusting.
Excellent :)
Wrong!
I haven't checked FR for a while, although there is a good chance I got a fair few points today. All my drivers were picked based on who liked.
+1 hehe :)
Biggest climber in this race - someone called Kathi with another team
I think I see a pattern
#FR Sad times for Formula Muse tonight, dropping down to 93rd. Sadly the team had issues with bad radio signal when listening to 5 live, and a glitch with opening a bottle of coke during the race to fill up our drivers points tally. Alas, we can only hope for improvements but the team know we weren't good enough today.
Top private leagues

3rd HelloF1 105 7,046.20
4th Planet-F1 League 45 6,846.80
We have a lead of more than 350 points
+1
Coke Zero (taste) is worse
Wrong again!
#fr who cares about my teams, what matters is that Heikki got 100 points all by himself, the first time he has hit 3 figures since China :D
i'm with christine. although i prefer diet coke :)
Thank christ. I needed backup. Could do with more really.
It's still, 2-1, not 3. :P
ooh for the season, Heikki has the least points out of everyone. Hear that Heikki? You are worse than Seb "just got fired" Bourdais.
Orange juice is where it's at.
;)
Seriously?!
WOW
#f1 Chucking the Rule Book Out. Happy, Happy, Haaaaaapy. My best finish ever in an entire race, 514th. Great result, solid 682 points. Considering we were 3689th in a race in Turkey, this is a signifigant improvement.
Happy with my choices in Mark Webber and Nico Rosberg, high scorers and that was good. Timo was high scorer, but if he had beaten that pesky Heikki Kovalainen, woulda made it even better.
For a while thinking I had picked the wrong Force India in Fisichella, but he scored more, so I'll happily take it. Worst scorer was Trulli, might think of a possible change there, sorta like Bourdais, but more crueler.
Aah, he'll win in Hungary won't he.
I do all that and write #f1 instead of #f1
that's because he has problems finishing races (anteeksi)
Okay, I'm losing it I meant to right fr
#fr?
wrong again
I didn't want to write hashtag fr as it would show in the filter
I like too think those problems are in the past, and that Hungary 2009 will be a replay of last year. :D
just quote it and put the right hashtag on it ;)
ahh ok, i may have potentialy possible done that myself 8-)
Also 266th in the private league, where are ya now Mr C?
right y'all, im going to go for a lovely ride as its rather nice outside.
see ya later
Later
grr,
Later mate.
Team Victory or Bust made a bad start to the season. A very bad start. Since then through magnificent strategy and dumb luck they have moved up the league every race. Every race until today's.
Today's poor performance is entirely the fault of Mark Webber. Having not lived up to expectations he was fired and then to spite the management he won the race. That would be bad enough but in the major re-shuffle surrounding his departure from the team we signed Lewis Hamilton whose race Webber destroyed at the first corner. Fortunately Lewis was disuaded from parking his car early and so we picked up a few points.
Our score was further hindered by Timo Glock's appalling qualifying performance and his penchant for starting from the pits.
The management of Team Victory or Bust is giving serious consideration to dispensing with the magnificent strategy element of the team selection and instead may pick the names of its drivers from an Apple box.
2nd, 3rd, 4th and 9th :D
#fr - after their second competitive race, Empty Stands finds itself top of this small sub-group of competitors, and is very happy with this result.
#Fr had a hunch to sell Sutil, Kubica and Glock for Webber - should have listened to my gut, but then those three drivers only scored 20 points less than Webber!
i'll hashtag that for you ;)
#fr
#fr
:)
#fr
and this one.
#fr
I messed that up :)
You can also promote Alia’s comparitor {Comment #419}
Oh yes please!
missed that comment. is it in drop.io?
If I manage to get them all done now, would it be OK to promote my Super Season Grid too? I need to do Turkey, Silverstone and today's races.
don't found it. can do,
sure thing.
that wasn't english.
Sense make you don't
Does Christine want comments from us about the race for the digest?
Awesome, will get to work on them now. Shouldn't take too long. :)
Well huh shouldn't he you sense make
so from badly translated Nelson tweets I get the impression: He thinks Alonsos tyre strategy was better, Alsono is 8 tenths faster because his car has upgrades, and finally, Alonso "walked very well" ;)
we gave that up months ago? too little response, sadly.
Sad. I enjoyed that.
Ah thought so.
#fr
Scuderia Mille Miglia is very pleased to have achieved a key goal today by cracking the top 100 for the first time this season. Thanks to a strong showing by Webber and Vettel; and a solid run by Button and Barrichello, the team scored healthy points today and is now in 97th.
That said, it is disappointed to have been outscored by Sidepodcast Racers today. With SPCR in 85th, SMM management believe they are definitely within reach. The entire team is confident that they will be ahead of SPCR by season's end.
actually, that's not totally true. we got great a response when people were asked repeatedly. but i think we got tired of hassling people continuously throughout the weekend.
Ah, the walking! ;)
Gravity Racing have stormed, yes stormed up to 553rd in Fantasy Racers, out of a grid of 561 teams.
I would say things can only get better, but they can clearly get 8 places worse!
#fr
Honestly, I was just waiting for the call - I enjoyed that part!
That can only end well... :D
Given some of the things that cam out of the Apple box this morning the drivers for the next race wwwould probably Fangio, Clark, Stewart, Lauda and Murray Walker.
Ant Davison?
fair enough. we're not the kind of people to hassle others into doing stuff. that's what we have steven for ;)
#fr I had: Webber, Vettel, Massa, Rosberg, Alonso, Glock, Fisichella, Sutil, Kimi
I had sold both Brawns because is was quite likely that the race would be wet or at least too cold for them. And they are too expensive if they don't finish 4th or higher. I'm quite happy with my team - would be happier if Sutil and Kimi stayed at least 100m away from each other at all times
9 people?!
too greedy?
You may as well just sign the whole field while you're at it! ;)
I'm not allowed :(
I know its pitpass, but have you seen the GP1 stuff?
http://www.pitpass.com/fes_php/pitpass_news_item.php?fes_art_id=38413
Crikey, Trulli was fastest on average over the whole weekend in Turkey.
It was in the Sunday Express as well
I wouldn't call that a reliable place to source news from! haha :D
He knows he spilt wine on his Mac. That’s probably about it. {Comment #622}
Whoops!
Now please tell me it still works...
good as ever. it was soaked through at the end of the show. tipped it on its end and drained all the wet stuff out. no problems to report.
OK people. Comments now.

I should just hand over my team to Kathi for management - I usually do moderately well in points but I just do not have much value in the team to buy or trade.
That said, am not too surprised, really. It falls in line with what's been said before.
Will they actually use GP1? They only will if Max gets re-elected.
They brought in a 9 driver limit to stop Kathi buying them all.
I think Kathi should be trading shares professionally with the money she has made in Fantasy Racers
Yikes!
I hope it doesn't corrode it, have you considered using it in a vacuum?
Shortest Bike Ride EVER
First 1/3 cycling up the hill, foot slips of pedal (i have cleats on my day bike), small off into a bush. All is fine, carry on going...
Second 1/3 realising that maybe my front ends a bit more bouncy than normal, discover puncture, turn back
Last 1/3, walk all the way back down the hill, to home where
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/image002-jpg-2
is the result, tyre and inner tube have come off rim.
Goody Goody
Back onto spare bike and back out. Argh
But if CVC give them more money to run as gp1, wont they be tempted away?
Had a puncture once, lost control and went into one of my neibghbours front garden hedge.
Doesn't CVC own the Formula 1 brand?
#GermanGP
Stoked for Webber to finally get a win! It was always going to come, now hopefully this is the first of many this season. Disappointed for Sutil obviously, he deserved points and was fast enough to get some. Rubens comments after the race were interesting, and he was right to feel frustrated, but I don't think any good will come of them. Still, I am happy with the result, and finally a race that was genuinely exciting to watch.
I would sell Jenson, Kubica and Glock or Jenson and Vettel and pick up Webber and Massa. At least until Thursday before Hungary.
It's just gone 2am here and i must sleep. It was a genuinely exciting race for more than just us Aussies. Congrats Mark and team. Thanks Sidepodfriends for a good time.
Night.
Night. I on the other hand will be staying up for the cricket. See ya later.
The only reason they'd use GP1, I think, is if they can't use F1 anymore. If they decide to cut out the FIA, they could decide to use GP1 rather than F1 to avoid all the legal hassle with the FIA.
FOM have trademarked it, but they don't own it per se.
#fr just written my post-race blog entry with all the lovely stats for Fantasy Racers. Hope you enjoy it.
I can't make the show tonight so have fun and I'll see you later ;)
#fr
LCM Aléman was my best team (589 points). The Germans thrived at their home circuit, with Rosberg and Vettel breaking the three-figure mark and the other three Germans lending good support.
LCM Dragons did pretty well (567 points), with Button, Rosberg and Vettel all breaking the three-figure mark. Fisichella and Trulli were reasonable choices too.
LCM Barato put in a mediocre performance (454 points). Nobody did well, but nobody did badly and there were a lot of drivers in there...
LCM Fire Lizard fared badly (397 points) because of the drivers I support, only Button scored a lot of points. Trulli, who was the wildcard pick, did OK but not fantastically.
LCM Caro did even worse (378 points) despite 88 guaranteed points and two points-taking drivers. The problem was that there were only two drivers...
I have been looking at RG's sidepodradio schedule and I think he needs a few more ideas thrown at him.
How about an F1 person of the day feature. You can have drivers, team principals, Rob. I would suggest you start with Rob to get you some brownie points. You could have a different host each day or for each person.
I think you also need to do some kind of F1 technology show. I think this needs a double act to host it. Someone who understands the technology well enough to talk intelligently about it and someone who doesn't know much at all to ask the obvious questions.
And I want to do another show. I think Journeyer and I should do a history show.
Any more ideas #sidepodradio
Night mate. And I need to finish Science coursework so I'll see y'all at 6ish
#GermanGP
#sidepodradio
Any ideas, add it to the list please, just keep it sensible, could also have different stuff for each day as well. Try and get everyone involved
I like the idea of a history show a LOT. :D
How about a politics show with Nick? Not everyone's cup of tea, I know, but I'm sure more than a few are interested in it. :)
#GermanGP
A good race for Red Bull and Webber, but not so for vettel who again proved unable to overtake anyone, it will be interesting to see how he performs next year when he is unable to make up places though refuling strategy.
Mark was rightly penalised for a highly questionable piece of driving off the start line. Lewis was terribly unlucky, and it would have been very interesting had he not tagged marks wing with his rear tyre.; as to what he could have achived later in the race.
So much focus on who was getting the tyres to work and how much they were degrading distracted a little too much from the actual racing today, and i look forward to the new policy of taking tyres with a smaller performance difference.
I would like to be a part of that as well...
Great idea. Well volunteered Nick
I could easily be the dumb question asker ;)
#sidepodradio
what happened?
:P
Hop on, Gavin. :D
missed that comment. is it in drop.io? {Comment #700}
It is - though the most up-to-date one precedes yesterday's qualifying. I need to do an update...

Just did....
Thanks! :P
:D
Well if you don't hashtag it no-one will ever find it again. Welcome aboard
#sidepodradio
Don't worry about it. Ecerything will be fine
#sidepodradio
How about a chat show?
Must finish coursework, really gone.
Any more race comments
#GermanGP
I suggest we just take Sidepodpanel on board - it's perfect as it is (even the series breaks).
What kind of chat do you have in mind?
#German GP
Well done Mark, average race for BMW and Timo. Disapointed for no points, but s'pose we gotta focus on 2010 in mind.
Hehe, Is that the tag line for #sidepodradio ?
I am signed up!

That's good to hear :)

ahhhh, stop distracting me. I'm shutting this place down.
Not literally of course, that would be the end of the world, just from browser

I veote for the ladies oogling hour where we talk about who is the dishiest :D ;)
sidepodspace update
7 hours until they are supposed to light the candle and everything is on schedule. 40 minutes left in the fuel tank filling process then the countdown goes in to a planned 2.5 hour hold at T-3 hours and holding.
good luck R.G!
just remember you'll be on holiday soon! ;)
Vettel was fastest on average over the whole weekend at Silverstone.
And you can discuss such things as whose wearing which sunglasses and whose are the best looking.
Does anybody know which teams are the top 5 in the autosport league?
I meant AUTOSPORT
Congratulations you are now the host and producer of a weekly one hour show. Get planning
Can we do the same with the grid girls or would that be sexist? ;)
High Five! :D
jenson would win each and every week :P
Mr C is a member of the AUTOSPORT forum so he may know
one hour? oh dear. I don't even know who is the best looking on the grid. Can I go with none of them?
You just got your second show
It's all happening now, isn't it?
Maybe you should do 30 minutes, and Nick can do the other 30 minutes. :)
Grr. Now I remember how much I hate C++.
Wouldnt that damage the authority of my first show? i may have to delegate...
Anyone else got any comments on the race or can we let Christine close that section of what I hesitate to call her script.
#GermanGP
Now you understand how this place works. I think if you check the comments Scott volunteered to host this show.
Congratulations Scott on your new show!
You've got to get interviews with actual F1 people.
#sidepodradio
I've been thinking of saying hello for a while but I wasn't sure if it might mean I'd get another show!
ahahaha i'm pleased i'm not the only one hiding from this conversation ;)
You've now got yourself the greetings show!
I think you need a longer Parade Lap
#sidepodradio
what happened to my plan to sleep before debrief? how is it now 2.5 hours after the race?
hey there, lou! y'know, amy would need some help running the girls show. :D you and lukeh should do a show too!
Lou,
we need a photography show
#sidepodradio
This is Scott in Italy we're talking about? I already have a show! I just liked the idea :P
And coursework complitemento.
No, I'm am not doing a Science show.
aha you mean a show all about brawn and how amazing they are? wouldn't that get a little dull for non brawn fans?
sure! or you can join him on the saturday breakfast show. :D
Liked the idea - volunteered. How is that different?
a photography show on the radio?... that can only go well ;) that reminds me, time to put some pics on flickr i think.
An hour on why Rubens and Jenson are awesome. It would be brawntastic.
As long as I get to do something with Timo with James, then lifes good.
You could combine it with the technology show.
#sidepodradio
I didn't say I'd do it though!
Co-host with Flibster on Something For The Race Weekend?
yay! :)
I am sure it is going to be radio with webcams like the Parade Lap and with links and things
#sidepodradio
I'm no good at tech
You can ask the questions to the smart guy.
Swann finally out! Aus back in with a chance!
You don't seem to understand how volunteering works in sidepodradio. No point worrying about it you have a new show to organise
Exactly
#sidepodradio
Well, it does involve grid girls, so maybe it ain't so bad! :D
I want Timo show. #sidepodradio
Wouldn't that have the same problem as Lou and Lukeh's Brawn show?
Timo Glock Rock? An hour of music you'd think Timo would like.
I only say this to use 'One o'clock, Two o'clock, Timo Glock, rock!' in some kind of opportunity
:D :D
bahahahahaha
Erm, possibly.
:D
Just realized - no Aside With Joe this weekend?
Have they lost him again?
You are not here
Why am I not?
Have we got room left in the schedule for Joe. We need to fit in important stuff like music Timo might like
You are studying
I also am not here
Sleepy sleepy
he doesn't have any wifi available. hoping to catch up tuesday(ish), if we can.
Wait, F1 Island discs, music drivers like. A ha
Finished
:D Aside is a bit iffy on the schedule - we'll probably have to slip that in either on Saturday night or on Sunday morning (between Breakfast and Parade Lap).
coolness. :D
It can be one of those obscure 4 in the morning show
drivers like a-ha?
You need to make sure you have someone ready to stand in.
Or in this case, we can also have it delayed on a weekday. :)
#sidepodradio
I'm sure Alex is more than ready to step up to the plate! :D
Take! on! Me!
Well thats what all drivers are singing to toro Rosso now le Seb is gone
I just asked Mr C if my hair was okay and he said: "Baseball cap?"
!!
Funnily enough I felt I was about to get volunteered then :)
How rude ;)
Stay on These Roads?
F1 Karaoke.
I host.
ouch!
i is back y'all, second ride was alot more productive than the first

Webber eventually gets his first GP win and did so in a fairly commanding style despite being over-aggressive at the start. Vettel never looked as "dialed in" this weekend but the Red Bull advantage over every other team today was very evident - they are in the hunt to chase Brawn down. Brawn must be worried, in practice they got their position by being lighter on fuel that everyone else. This ultimately hampered their race and the strategy would only have worked if interrupted by rain or a safety car. More bad luck in the pitstop for Rubens saw Jenson yet again beat him on the track but not on merit. Felipe having made a good start brought the Ferrari home to his first podium of the year. Kimi was again outclassed by his teammate and again seemed to have a magnetic attraction to Adrian's car while the latter was in a strong position. Hopefully Kimi will not get a penalty for the next race. For Force India a case of so close and yet so far to scoring points - the cars are now genuinely in the mid-field and should be scoring points. I wonder if FIF1 should not draft Luizzi rather than Fisi - Adrian is getting the better of his veteran team mate. Lewis and Kovy made good starts, but for the incident on the first corner Lewis would probably have been on the podium. The light fuel load of Lewis' car would have prevented victory today but the team should be encouraged by the HUGE progress. Kovy for me, yet again disappoints, a good start but seems to go backwards during the race - still one is one point (but I would be looking for another driver next season). I did not see much of Nico but another very solid drive ensured more points for the team. I am perplexed by Fernando today, spins on the warm-up and yet gets fastest lap of the race and scores some points - what are Renault's problems? I am biased, but I think Timo impressed starting last from the pitlane and finishing 9th in the Toyota (which generally struggled at the circuit). Were it not for the KERS in the Macca I wonder if he would not have got by Kovy. The BMW Saubers were again terrible today - they should put Nick on a one-stop like Timo to stand any chances of getting points. Kubica had a good start but otherwise a dreadful race as did Kaz, PK (again), Trulli and Toro Rosso. Surely there is nothing to lose now for Toro Rosso to put Jaime Alguersuari in the seat to get experience for next year. They are the slowest on the grid. Driver of the day had to be Webbo. Brawn are now no longer even second best - arguably Ferrari and Macca were equal and even Williams are close. The factory teams of BMW-Sauber, Renault and Toyota will have some more explaining to their board members. At least Renault customer engines are winning.
Of course at some point Sidepodradio would have a charity evening to support SidepodAid ;)
!! he'll be on the naughty step for a while yet then...
i'm sure it looks fine. it looked nice this morning anyway.
Is one side still wet?
Yes. Yes oh yes.
It dried pretty quick y'day
Presumably if we have fully funded sidepodradio we don't need sidepodaid
Take! Me! On! :D
Take! on! Mr C!
Can't go wrong with more money.
Sudden urge to jump into a cartoon strip
New podcast? Baseball ;)
You will have to learn their names though!
Steven Roy and I can help her with that - we watch baseball. :D
Hey everyone - N.Technology are taking the FIA to court - the judge accepted it as valid for a hearing, and will be heard on September 15 in Paris.

Now...as you all know, i hate football....but credit where credits due...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzo0In6JblU&NR=1
I watch some baseball, I just dont know Who's playing where, or where what is
That's okay...
Who's on first
I like your thinking
Yeah, seen that before, tis amazing.
I saw somone mention that earlier. I wonder if Ari had a word. You sue Max and help my election and then ....
What's on second
Never mind second what's the name of the guy on first?
Who
No what's on second. Who's on first?
I am hoping it will more reason for Max not to get support to re-stand. I also feel sorry for teams if the process was so flawed.
Super Season grid is almost done for Germany, just the fastest laps from the race to put in.
I dont know
What on earth is that?
No. I don't know's on third.
It was the same the last time. They never publish the criteria they use to select teams so it is always suspicious.
What?
I really have my doubts as to whether manor will be on the grid next year.
Watching IndyCar now - didn't know Wilson won last week at the Glen...
Who?
You've not read my blog then. ;)
Super Season Grid takes an average of every driver's fastest lap from every session during a GP weekend. This average is then put in with other averages from the other race weekends and at the end of the season, you get to see who on average was the fastest throughout the whole season.
I'm watching the live replay from last night. 110 minutes to go!
I rather hope not, I just feel uncomfortable the way they seem to have got in - certainly not likely to have much of a fan-base.
As long as a court doesn't stop them being there, they will be there. They're a legit outfit. Their method of selection is in question, though.
Although I have been slacking and have only just been updating from Monaco onwards.
Who's on first? What's on second? And I don't know's on third!
Do you include Free Practice?
But why? The Debrief will be starting soon-ish.
I'm guessing wet races don't help? :P
Collingwood out! Bye bye England!
But how could you not know!
Nooooo.
You must know who's playing!
Killing time until it does. Better than sleeping.
I did say every session, so yes, all 3.
It doesn't matter regardless of conditions. Lap times are lap times.
I was starting to worry that i wouldn't be winning this money...
Is Dario leading? He fot pole I think
Meant as a reply to James' comment.
Who is playing Who's on first
That's what I am asking.
Don't worry, its not personal. I don't read many blogs
Yes but they have indicated that they entered under the budget cap. The two other teams (Campos and USF1) are less concerned about the budget - viz they want to be there. Personally I think Manor will be a HUGE disaster - relying too much on virtualization.
Looks like Webber was fastest all weekend on average, with Alonso 2nd.
I don't know
What if they dont do high speed runs?
It doesnt seem fair to weight them the same as a race?
IndyCar's top 3 drivers are a Scot, a Kiwi, and an Aussie - no wonder NASCAR is whooping them in the ratings...
Scott Dixons wife just had a baby. Hooray!
I am curious to see if a competitive F1 car can be designed without ever being in a wind tunnel.
I did this at the end of last year, and back then I only took the fastest lap for each driver over the whole weekend. By taking laps from all 5 sessions, it gives a more detailed result I find.
Congrats to Scott! :)
Surely they'll have to use one at some point.
on third.
I am very curious too - and that is their weakness. N.Technology would have been better.
Works against some teams, they rely too much on the wind tunnel and not enough on the track
Not a good time to mention it I suppose bbut I keep getting this popup on the LCLT on firefox
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/lclt-jpg
They are being backed by the chief steward though.
Why would anyone want to race with them when they are so compromised. They will be forced out i think
They openly said that their approach is through modelling and virtualization rather than scale models and wind tunnels.
sidepodspace update
6 hours 6 minutes till the shuttle kicks off. The fuel tank is full and the commander is looking to see what he can get for all those nectar points.
Everything hunky dory so far
Nick Wirth only uses CFD
What do you usually do? just click on the check box and do it again ;)
But with so little track testing allowed (and the expense) a wind tunnel has to be better than complete virtualization.
Even if they are forced out, who would replace them? Would anyone be ready to do so?
As much as I like their ambition, I can't see it working. Modern day F1 tells me to make a competitive car, you need wind tunnel time at some point in the development process.
Ah Ok.
(I dont want to interfere...;) )
Might be interesting to take their fastest time from the whole of FP, Quali and the race.
so 3 times instead of 5
I do take their fastest time from the whole of qualifying, which is mainly Q2, although surprisingly one or two drivers set a quicker time in Q1. Of course, for this weekend all times came from Q1 because of the rain-affected Q2.
Depends on when it happens. But i think we have a big issiue brewing here. It surprises me Branson is getting involved in a team who will be likely be thought of as 'cheats'
I think Epsilon Euskadi would still be keen and more competitive.
agreed
They seem to have the cash and the facilites. They've built their own LMP1 car, so I don't see why they couldn't create something for F1.
Plus, they have experience running a single seater team. They currently run 2 cars in the WSR.
oops, no i meant, instead of a time from each of fp1, fp2 and fp3, just the fastest time overall. ;)
I thought it was rumour only- while Virgin are too cheap-skate to sponsor Brawn next year they will not want their cars to languish at the back of the grid.
It's a good idea but I like to take everything into account, regardless of weather or performance.
I am sure they could, but if this doesn't come to a head until September/October it will likely be too late for them to join next year
Your thoughts are appreciated though, so cheers for that. :)
Their factory looks cool!
No worries! :D
The team will probably sell him dreams of glory at knockdown prices.
Its a rumour, but he hasn't denied it or done anymore with brawn, so it seems pretty likely!
Is it in spain?
That seems like a pretty sensible place for USF1 to base themselves in europe, as pre season testing will be so close by. Unless they test in the states.
I would not rely on Virgin money though - they had a chance of big-time marketing with Brawn!
OK, values are all done for Germany. Here is how the Grid stands after 9 races:
Button - 1'28.319
Rosberg - 1'28.378
Barrichello - 1'28.407
Webber - 1'28.489
Vettel - 1'28.568
Massa - 1'28.647
Nakajima - 1'28.764
Raikkonen - 1'28.775
Alonso - 1'28.798
Hamilton - 1'28.821
Trulli - 1'28.855
Glock - 1'28.906
Kubica - 1'29.115
Heidfeld - 1'29.123
Kovalainen - 1'29.185
Piquet - 1'29.298
Sutil - 1'29.451
Buemi - 1'29.573
Bourdais - 1'29.622
Fisichella - 1'29.709

It is so Mr C's clever filter system can find things. So for podcast guesses Christine doesn't need to read 200 comments. She just types #podcastguess in the filter and hey presto she has all the podcast guesses
Ah smart thinking that man :D
I love watching them argue on TG :D

This mission will have 5 space walks using 3 robotic arms. The shuttle arm, the main ISS arm and an arm on the Japanese Kibo module
It will be docked to the station for 11 days
This will be the first time there will be 13 people on the ISS instead of the usual 10 as this 7 shuttle crew is the first to visit since the permanent ISS crew was increased from 3 to 6

At the moment, it simply filters whatever is in the LCLT or doohickey as you look at it. So if you're on the doohickey, it'll give you the results from your last refresh.
On the LCLT it will search the entire thread.
yay! goodwood! :)
Oooooooooh it's that car I saw in the BP place that I hated....!
Cheers, thanks Christine
that chrome plated Bugatti was stunning.
Hammond's excited about this new Carbotanium.
that'll be the BP place you and Chris wouldn't let me stay in cause Jenson was coming? :P
That's the one :D
Here's that god awful Renault. still hate it looking at that photo, even in black.

Urm, why was he driving barefoot!
He didn't look like he wanted to be there, but he warmed up to Clarkson.
Maybe he was wearing flip flops?

The shuttle crew has arrived at the launch pad. The commander is being assisted into the safety equipment that goes with his suit. The commander is alwaysthe first person to board.
Maybe his shoelaces were untied :P
Wow, in the top 10. Nice one!
1:46!
Niiiiice.
I thought driving barefoot was illegal
suppose he could get out and run away.... :P
Im surprised he didnt race a car to be honest
I'm watching Top Gear online and I just noticed it gives away the Star in a Reasonably Priced Car in the description
Really?
I dont think I have done it in the UK, but I would say its a lot safer than wearing quite of footwear types
I dont think its a secret!
I have a feeling it is illegal
*quite a lot
I know, but earlier Lou didn't want to know and some people don't like to prior to it being said.
nope. so long as your shoes aren't left in the footwell to move around, no problems.
According to wikipedia
In the UK, The Highway code merely states that footwear should not interfere with the operation of the controls of the vehicle. So driving barefoot is not expressly forbidden
But apparently it diminishes available breaking force
Hehe, It is for some then ;)
Live ammo, really? I doubt it somewhat.
Last time they did this they just had the rule that you had to have a full lock on the car
I need one of those bridge things
I've always loved the Mitsubushi Lancer Evo. Remember watching Tommi Makkinen winning many a rally and championship in that lovely red Lancer when growing up :)
I am not sure what this says about marksmanship in the british army
That looks like a 7 that's had the rear end of a 9 shoved on. I recognise the roof fins and rear bumper/diffuser and that's definately not from a 7.
Oooooww nooo
Poor Evo :(
I dont think he was in that ;)
It's still going?!
Hehehehe. This must be the new model? ;)
Adagio for Strings, so fitting.
It was only the screen and top that was damaged, it didnt touch the rest of it
Hehe... You set fire to Dorset!
But that drop must have done the suspension some harm.
It's a rally car, have you not seen Rally Finland ;)
Heh, that was awesome :)
Touche :D
Not as awesome as the last time he went up against the army.
I remember playing British Bulldog at school. Good times. Get to get out my dirty, evil, hacky side of me.
Great pictures Lou.
I love the close up of the radiator grill of the old Merc.
Agreed, they came out fantastic :D
shhhh they haven't finished uploading yet!!!
plus i have to name them!!..
but thanks :)
They look good so far then. I don't mind about them being nameless.
oh okay. it's taking ages. i'll never upload so many photos at once.
I blame Jenson
there are lots of Jenson photos... i couldn't decide which ones to not upload out of these. so decided i may as well put them all up. i have loads of others but they aren't as nice.
where are they?
I've now bought all the stuff left for my boat :D woot
i'll tell you when they finish uploading. :)
yay!
http://www.flickr.com/photos/loujohnson/
argh! very excited
OOPS
Cool :D
Anyone want to read a scary f1 story? http://en.redbulletin.com/articles/sing_when_you_re_winning/
Steven!
Noones really listening to you are they.
grr.
:P
i'm getting that impression.
so.many.photos
I am behaving, i have a dvd to return!
when they are organised they will seem better..
While everyone waits for lou's. Not one for plugging (well thats a lie and I know it), heres my set from Cardiff. Just two weeks late.

#sidepodspace
2 hours 45 minutes till launch and everything still looking good. The crew are being loaded.
Woohoo for the millenium stadium!
Just went through them then after your twitter plug. Very cool.
Evening all.
Just returned from the Outpost. How was the show?
I didn't know speedway riders wore stuff like that http://www.flickr.com/photos/sauberrg/3710668427/in/set-72157621180259677/
FAB U LOUS
Wow that's cool - just like the setup they used when I went to see it at Parken...
Yeah, new craze.
Cool, look forward to the podcast then ;)
Must hurt if they come off their bikes
Pretty much. More or less same format all around really.
Working on it. :)
Go Christine!
Is there a prize for whoever guesses the length of the podcast? :D
Sidepodlovin'
You get to be called Mystic.
Mystic and Respect
Gah! I hate my laziness/lack of organization/ sometimes. I wanted to listen to Dream Theater's new album, the cd wasn't there, but I found it in a Yeah yeah Yeah's album... which also had Zoo Tycoon in it and the YYY album CD obviously. So I put Zoo tycoon back in it's box... and found one of my 360 games. I put that back and in that I found the Black Books DVD. Once that was back my epic (fail) quest ended.
I should really put things back....
You get it right and until the next podcast you are entitled to call yourself Mystic James
It's all we want and need ;-)
Money involved in sidepodradio...
Awesome stuff, but I will forget my guess so I'd never know :D
Seriously though, I call where I was an 'Outpost' because my wife offered to house sit for my sister-in-law because they went on holiday and they just got a puppy you see. The house is in the middle of a farm with no roads or street lights, there's no internet and only two channels on the TV.
My God, I get so bored out there! Also the house is next to derelict and because it's too far away from the railway station I refuse to sleep out there :(
I have noted them. There's a wiki page.
It will be announced. Christine is so organised
There is a wiki page for everything :D
okay all the photos are up and can be found here
http://www.flickr.com/photos/loujohnson/sets/72157620975572963/
am now going to add names and probably some descriptions, but seeing as people have already seen some of them ;) you might as well know they are all up.
yay! :)
You expect anything less?
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Podcast+Guesses
Wow, great stuff Lou! What megapixel is your camera?
I guessed on the last show, heh I forgot that :D
Can't get away with anything round here :)
little blonde kid = uber cute
It's Brendon hartley!
Ahaha
it's a Nikon D70s so 6.1 megapix
i know! it's brawns new young mechanic scheme :P
Only 6.1? Wow, they're excellent quality. Is it to do with the different lenses?
cheap labour
it's not all about how many megapixals ;) i doubt it was a lot to do with the lens, i used two lenses. i used the Nikon 18-70mm lens it came with and my Sigma 70-300mm lens.
haha, if i was being mean i would blame the kid for the fact the car struggled a little today.. but i wont. :D
That's interesting since my iPhone takes pretty decent pictures and it's only 2.0mp.
I love the photos of the red arrows considering at the time you were swivvelling 180 degrees from jenson to red arrows back to jenson and so on ;)
Love them though, fantastic job. Some of them photos with Murray, Jenson, Sir Stirling etc down at the start line are so cool!
Awesome...
*dives in and looks for himself :P
it was a lovely start to the day. i couldn't believe my luck. we came in, i was chatting to mum and then suddenly they all appeared and i managed to dart to the barrier quicker than anyone else :D hehe
Yeah, i used to get awesome photos with my old sony ericsson, probably beter than my 8.0mp video camera.
But i have discovered i can zoom and crop the bigger photos to get much better end results.
...not that you would know that from my goodwood shots which i did completely on the fly!
Great stuff Lou, you have inspired me to get the rest of mine up and start on the video!
thank you! and yay!!!
You cannot compare an iPhone camera to one like Lou uses - even between a basic digital camera and a better one there is a difference...
#sidepodspace
2 hours 5 minutes to the launch of the space shuttle Endeavour. The crew are loaded up and the com checks are complete.
Everything looks like there is going to be a launch
the quality of lou's pics have little to do with megapixels, or the right zoom lenses. you can't take shots like that without a basic understanding lighting, framing and depth-of-field. they look good because she took them.
awww :)
Coool.
I think it has been delayed enough for us to believe all is well with the world. We don't need any more delays.
true story
agreed
nice pictures lou!
I love the two of tyres...
aw thanks. spc is the best :)
Dear NASA,
My faith in the universe has been restored. Your shuttle may launch.
Ta
Mrs Christine
:D
Absolutely agree - I never said that it's the camera taking the pictures. She's brilliant at what she does and some of her pictures are achingly good.
All I was trying to say was that I don't think an iPhone camera would be able to handle what she wants and needs a camera to do.
i was agreeing with you and building on your argument.
Scott, where's your super season grid? I just checked Zero downforce and I can't find it...
Thanks. I was afraid my comment was misread as saying that Lou had a magic camera ;)
At the end of the day a camera is like an F1 car - it's just a dumb tool that requires the user to be able to extract all the performance out of it by knowing what makes a good shot and being inspired to get that perfect photo. Lou seems to have that 'knack' - and some of her photos are honestly inspiring to me because I have tried to do some of the things she does with a camera when I take pics.
They're not even half as good as hers though ;)
I decided this should be nominated for comment of the year
#sidepodspace
They have closed the hatch and are breaking down the white room where the astronauts are loaded into the shuttle from.
Lou, quick question...
How much are you paying for your Flickr account?
Ok these photos are the one which didn't really fit anywhere, so they may seem a bit comical after Lou's :D
If nothing else maybe they will give a sense of what its like around the goodwood site.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/40163651@N05/sets/72157621224446591/
Just heard that Torchwood had some fantastic ratings for it's 5 parter this week. Wonderful, excatly what it deserves with the best thing Torchwood has ever produced without a doubt :)
4th series is coming too! Somehow...
Um, why is one of them looking at the behind of a mechanic.
yeah, that'll be interestign
Lots of new faces
he has a sexy ...
There was a crashed car behind it and it was the only shot i could get before they covered it
i've just renewed my one year subscription. cost me about £15. i had a free account for a few years but then i wanted more space and sets for photos :D
Without spoiling it for people who didn;t see them, I can think of 4 people, possibly 5, for the 'new' lineup but we'll see...
....
Fair enough.
Yeah that's why I asked... you get loads more options I see...
If I start taking photos more I might just do that...
Is picassa free?
I paid for a pro account just to get all my goodwood stuff on! Although I plan over the next year to get into a bit more photography if I can then see next year if it's worth renewing although Goodwood 2010 will probably make me do so. Not that my stuff should be called proper photography, it's nowhere near the sheer awesome levels of lou's standards but just as something else :)
i want beer
Flickr is too but you only get 100MB per month, restricted photo sizes and it only displays the last 200 pics...
tis my beer!
want it
Hey all. Did someone say beer?
I think I'll head to 7-11 and pick a Fosters for Mark
Yes but its mine!
Sure my friend. How's a pint of Austrian Lager sound?
Are you anywhere near the Kennedy Space Center Joe?
Probs would get a pro account, but only go to two events a year.
Okay...(stepping away slowly)
I had beer...
noooooooo. you wet for food?
No, about 170 miles away. But I suspect there are 7-11's closer to KSC.
I am shocked
you said you'd never drink again? it'd be wasted on you.
The shuttle is launching in an hour and a half
excusemwa?
niiiice.
hehe, you agreed!
Yes sorry... I wasn't really around for the debrief... But then I got the chance to listen for the first hour-ish.
went.
I am sorry Steven. I don't know what came over me.
ah rightey
If it's night, I can see it, we sometimes see the smoke trail. I went to college in Orlando at UCF and it was a great view, just about 35 miles
Can you hear it?
I thought you meant I poured the beer on my food and made it wet. I see now.
hahahaha
Since i have stopped drinking maybe thats what i will have to do!
No, but I'll take a look and tell you what I see, I'll dig out one of digital cameras....see what I see. When it comes back though, we get two sonic booms that shake the house
did i miss something, how come scott's super-grid is in drop.io, not on his blog?
He posted a comment during the show saying he had put it on dropio
i swear he put it on there, i remember a link. how odd
Did I miss something happening to Trulli in the race today, by the way? He finished up 17th which is basically last all bar LewHam. Glock started from the pitlane and ended up 9th!?
he's still blogging thought right?
Told ya Glock was super awesome
I didn't doubt it. Trulli is super bad then?
No, he's Super Aguri awesome!
Trulli crashed on the first corner
I made a comment at the time. He pitted very early in the race but it was never mentioned why in commentary.
Yes, he is clearly the Nelson Piquet to the Fernando Anando
Oooh, yea, I remember. Weird.
Don't ya dare compare him with Super Aguri
I remember seeing him crashing into someone in the background on the first few corners on lap 1.
Just to lou and other Brawn fans, do you know they're considering starting up an official Fan Club?
When did Glock and Alonso pit exactly?
yes.
Glocky lap 37.
will there be cogs?
I've only just found out, dunno how I missed that...
I love questions in the format of "Lou do you know this thing about Brawn..."
I always know the answer is "yes" :)
Yes! Well maybe. It asks how much you'd like car parts in a welcome pack.
hey, i beat he this weekend.
it was a small victory.
*her
typing failure.
hehe. I should've known better really...
:(
Personally I want to know where Alonso suddenly found that pace from. He suddenly was going faster than everyone.
possibly, they have a questionnaire on their site.
NASA now forecasting a slight chance of thunder showers at launch time. The weather may be OK for the launch but not for a return to lanch site if there are problems.
i'm IN!
Are you sure? According to the FIA he weighed in at 662.3kg which was 22 laps worth. Was he fuelled from the pitlane before he started?
In what?
How do you join? ;)
Im debating joining the mclaren one just for the factory tour. I live quite close to it and it bugs me everytime i go past it
Possibly. Glock was out there the longest for sure.
hehehe :) about the Jenson hiring sports cars?
same thing happened to kimi in '08. slow until halfway / sticks in the fastest lap.
Definitely lap 37.
But, but, but in the Renault? :D
I checked the weather radar, it's clear over the Cape, but storms churning up inland
i noted it down and everything.
lou 27. mr.c 1.
Alonso is practising how to be the Ferrari driver who is a former world champion ;)
Alright, I going to get beer now.
they haven't started it up yet, but the questionnaire asks about what we the fans would want from the fan club etc.
:P :D
ahaha :D
Its evil!
Looks Like PK will be staying where he is: The team have promised that me and Fernando will have the same car for the next race
They are saying NW
I know times are hard, but two drivers in the same car?
Yep,
A Renault Megane to the airport, they're car sharing to save costs
Alonso drives, Piquet tweets. Both doing their best abilities in life then.
He must have been fuelled in the pits before he started then.
I want him to stick around for as long as he can get Alonso to tweet, although it will probably all be in spainish and I won't understand a word of it.
Anyone know when Alonso made his first stop?
:D
check autosport live commentary? does that say?
Rubens reeeeeally needs to get Jenson in on the act
Make it a law and then Timo can tweet
Does this help you Gavin?
http://blogf1.co.uk/2009/07/12/germany-2009-live-race-notes/
He would probably only tweet about his eyebrows
On lap 18 Alonso pits from 10th place. Fisichella pits from 9th the next lap. Button passes Heidfeld for 10th place.
http://www.grandprix.com/race/r812racenotes.html
Alonso pitted lap 17
http://fia.com/en-GB/mediacentre/f1_media/Documents/ger09_race_summary.pdf
Ah interesting - I checked his post on pitstop and tyre strategies but he didn't have him there... doesn't look like he caught it in that post either. Thanks for the link though :)
Cheers - from what page did you find that document as it doesn't appear in the 'on event info' page...
Cheers - looks like he pitted 6 laps early. No good for my fuel consumption post then...
Never mind, I found it!
http://fia.com/en-GB/mediacentre/f1_media/Pages/timing.aspx
Past race info is locked away by the FIA sadly, unless you have an account on there.
Although I have been impressed with the information on there.
I have some older info if you need it though... just let me know...
Cool, although I think it is possible to get around it. They should keep the information more open though.
Acutally it isn't, but I'm not bothered. I didn't know most of it existed before this race anyway. They should keep it more open to people though, why lock it all away from the fans who might be intrested?
Because F1 is restrictive like that. I have the whole season saved so if anyone needs it, I gots it ;)
Gotta go to bed, head into the last week of school. See y'all.
Yeah same here.
Night RG and night to the rest of ya ;)
Night RG
See ya Gavin
see ya R.G :)
Night Gavin
Mark Webber is Front page news here this morning - even beat the cricket on the radio.
This is unusual - we normally don't even get the race results.
night gavin and RG
Night Gavin and RG
Yep, that might change with a new president.
Night, reminds me that I would have had work and been sleep by now. I don't miss work at all :D
Some strange new sport?
I lookforward to the today-tonight special report on this up and coming craze ;)
No action for Raikkonen/Sutil. I can't wait to see how Steven Roy explained that one away.
I think they just like the swearing on the radio
#sidepodspace
1 hour to launch and everything stil going well. The close out crew have closed the hatch, broken down the white room and left the area..
I have digital camera, waiting to show you what I see.
I can't see the difference between that and the Massa Bourdais incident. Except Ferrari are out of favour with the powers that be.
This is the best part about the FIA's site:
I think sidepodradio should take over from NASA TV because they are hopeless.
awww i love today's big picture!!
Oh! Well that's pretty much what i was gonna say.
There was a guy from Jacksonville around a couple days ago. I used to live in Jacksonville and they're only about 100 miles north and get a very good view, hopefully he comes on, get him to snap some shots.
Awwwwwwwwwww!!!!!
Where? Is Rubens getting a hug?
#sidepodspace
a few minutes ago they said the weather is NO GO at the moment
Jenson has his arm around Rubens and it's just awesome
http://www.f1minute.com/2009/07/12/a-quiet-word/
Hehe! He did get a hug
That would be interesting
That's not good. I missed that
He's not here today, if I see him again, I'll put a bug in his ear
not in nasa tv, @astronautics at twitter
Weather radar, storms getting closer to KSC, it'll be very dicey
That's why missed it. I am watching NASA TV and monitoring http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/shuttle/main/index.html
A couple of hours ago they were predicting 70% go
There is a line of moderate thunderstorms approaching. If they can delay, it'll be a go
#sidepodspace
4 minutes till launch.
45 minutes not 4
I just got asked who Chuck Norris is, and responded by saying
"You cannot define Chuck Norris, Chuck Norris defintes you"
hehehehehe
*defines
They have a 5 minute window
The storms are moving slowly and if there is an onshore breeze they may get held off. We'll see. I'll be looking to the NE
problem is not weather at launch site, but at the emergency landing site. thunder clouds at less than 20 miles from runway
Evening all. Looks like I just finished watching the race in time to see the launch
NASA TV saying weather is good for launch but too close for a return to the shuttle landing facility if there are problems. There needs to be a 20 mile circle round the launch site with no weather issues
Hi Andy. Good timing. 39 minutes to go
Gavin, your graph you did for the British GP qualifying? Could you show me how to do one for my SSG? :P
He is asleep
Actually it's this one
http://drop.io/f1numbers2009/asset/gbr09-racestats-xls
can I just say, the tape delayed broadcast on FOX in the US sucked! I didn't see 5 uninterrupted laps. 11 to go a commercial, at 9 to go another. Missed the post race interview. I have to wait for SPEED to rebroadcast their limited commercial broadcast
Damn, bad timing then.
OK, time to get a drink then. What did everyone think of the race?
I thought Webber deserved both the win and the drive-through.
What does Kimi have against Sutil?
Is it any wonder that F1 is not as popular as it could be on that side of the Atlantic
I was wondering that myself. Anytime Sutil has a good run, here comes Kimi
I'll have to send another "Please don't do anymore F1 races" e-mail to Fox
I think Webber deserved the penalty and that he drove well. In the end though the reason he won was tha it took the stewards 20 minutes to decide that sideswiping someone should merit a penalty.
And I complain about FOX Sports Latin America... at least we get the race live...
NASA TV weather radar showing rain NE of the launch site
They're as bad as NASCAR. Is that because NASA + C + R = NASCAR ?
Apparently the weather being monitored is cumulus clouds and lightning
I wish BBC America could broadcast the race
#sidepodspace
30 minutes till the planned launch time. Launch can take place up to 5 minutes after that time only as the shuttle has to be launched into the orbital path of the ISS.
30 Min. Exact? Have to go grill, so I'll set my alarm
27 minutes 30 seconds MARK
NASA TV saying the weather issue is storms from the west. Radar clearly showe north east 5 minutes ago.
I thought Webber's penalty seemed like more rule-making on the run. If Heikki had not held everyone up, Webber would have ended up in the mid top-ten
FOX News is saying a decision is immenent on launch
NASA TV just said that they are polling flight controllers
Has Kimi been handed any penalty for hitting Sutil?
It is a democracy?
They could never run an f1 team!
Was deemed a racing incident, and both drivers seem to agree
Thanks.
No of course not. It's one of those random "racing incidents" whatever that means. Maybe Webber/ Barichello wasn't in the race?
Standard practise. They ask the controller is charge of each section to state go or no go. If one says no go they don't go.
Mental Images of a mini Kimi and mini Adrian in #f1playground with Bernie going "say sorry Kimi, now shake hands"
Whoah What was going on in that Indy Race!
There's pressure for you!
Webber changed his line on a straight and barged into the side of another car. It is an entirely different situation.
Toyota is run by committee and they've done....oh wait, not a good example
What happened. I was going to watch it after the live show an I forgot about it
:D
#sidepodspace
20 minutes till launch. looks like we are going doen to the wire on this one
Some guy in a penske appeared to slam someone into a wall repeatedly, just saw a clip on SSN
I can't agree with that.
They are going to have to watch race starts from now on. Look at Hamilton's starts from the last couple of years. The only reason he didn't hit people is that they moved.
HCN, vs PT, is that what you're talking about? The overhead shot showed HCN turn his wheel right into PT
Helio-Castro Neves vs. Paul Tracy
:D Tracey back to his best?
What Webber did was try to intimidate Barrichello. That could easily have lead to a huge accident. You cannot allow drivers to aim their car at someone else. Senna and Schumacher did that and were allowed to do it.
If anyone else does it whoever they are they should be penalised. and penalised properly.
There is leaning into people, and then actualy hitting them. I think the penalty was completly fair.
Webber said he didnt mean it, but regardless, you cant let people go ramming there way down to the first corner at 150 mph
Sounds more like something PT would do.
Who won the race?
Yeah, but when he got out of the car he wasn't very confrontational. But the Canadian fans rained boos down on Penske and HCN
that doesn't make it a good move... if he had crashed, he should had benn punished in the same way.
Indy Cars are on Sky sports X at the moment
Ashley Judd's husband
Hamilton has done it plenty of times, so has Alonso I think. What Webber did was a lot less than I have seen in the past.
Sounds like NASA TV don't expect the launch to happen. THe countdown is going all the way down in case th weather improves.
And why cant bridgestone mark there tyres like that?
T-Minus how long?
ah rubbish
Paul di Resta's cousin.
Bernie doesn't want to do anything that Indycar does
Have they considered moving there launch site to somewhere like Arizona or New Mexico?
? Franchitti
and there is wrecking people's races. If we are going to have nanny-stewards then why not penalise Kimi? Or any other coming together in any race
ah rubbish i was waiting up for it and everything.
maybe for the first time the stewards where doing their job right
Ignore the official count. It is really 14 minutes
Neither crashed, neither were effected.
Yep
Here's the video evidence:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hhmhd7TRAzo
until somebody crashes and dies. and then what?
He's gone soft
Marks incident was dangerous, Kimis wasnt.
Marks looked deliberate, kimi and sutil were both trying to take a corner, but were at different speeds
To my mind, HCN just turned into him.
There is a difference between two cars going for the same piece of tarmac in a corner and two cars running side by side and one of them moving over into the other. It's not on. It's down right dangerous and totally unnecessary.
Actually, I retract that. On closer observation, both cars touched wheels, which caused HCN's car to veer into PT's. Racing incident it seems.
launch is a no-go
1851 launch tommorrow
How... precise,
Have they really not considered moving the nasa launch site to somewhere with more stable weather?
Time to grill. I'll be back later with a cool buzz
That's assuming Mark meant to do it, that he was deliberate. He said it wasn't. Who is to say other little "racing incidents" are not as bad or worse? You can have a nice big accident in a corner as well. If they are going to penalise Webber they better start have a hard look at anything else. Personally, I think they went over the top.
There's a trade-off, less stable weather, but a handy ocean for the solid fuel boosters to fall into.
I think it was very fair.
Although a black flag or nothing at all wouldnt have suprised me either.
From your point of view i cant see what wrong, he won the race! :D
If he had won without the penalty everyone would be saying he could only win by cheating so it was probably for the best that he got it!
Ah that's true i guess!
And now, after so long, there are also political reasons. They have problems with downsizing operations after shuttle retirement, imagine if they completely moved away from Florida...
I take your point, but in my opinion this is the first big decsion i have seen them get right for a while.
I was shocked they actually did it
There is my frustration. All of a sudden, half way through the season, the stewards seem to wake up and start throwing out penalties.
agreed. we are now entitled to complain if they don't do it the next time
better now than never...
That is a good point.
I think i would make a good steward... where do i apply ;)
I'm not so sure about that. I almost threw something at my TV after Spa last year. I want consistent judgments year-long. This playing with championship contenders is very annoying.
I thought he would get away with it to keep the championship going, but he didnt which was a big suprise for me.
Maybe now we have the stewards biographies they are more inclined to protect their decsion making record...
They just better maintain some consistency. Otherwise I'm taking them out the back for a very stern talking-to.
Night guys :)
night scott
My broadband dropped out a few minutes before the launch time. Once I had finished complaining about media temple and realised that NASA TV hasd stopped too I had to reboot to get anything to work. Still NASA saved me from missing the launch.
Next attempt is 6:51 pm Eastern / 11:51pm UK tomorrow
Gosh that must be a frustrating business to be in.
Are you seriously suggesting Webber's car move that far right that quickly without him doing it? He did it. That is why happened. Schumacher didn't accidently chop people. Senna didn't accidently put Prost in the pit wall. I cannot believe anyone is defending this.
There is a clear differnce between Webber's contact with Barrichellow and his contact with Hamilton. One was deliberate and the other was accidental.
The new vehicle is due to launch from one of the shuttle pads. That pad is being converted to suit
Is the new vehicle still going to be a big ol' rocket with a capsule on top?
More or less. Why mess with a tried and tested idea?
It shows what happens when the taxpayer is financing the business. No commercial business would have planned to launch last night with a 40% chabce of weather or tonight with a 60% chance.
I think Webber was defending his position. I've seen a lot worse. This time they just happened to hit because Rubens either didn't see him or decided not to move. If this is unacceptable, at it may be, then we better see some consistent ruling on it.
Giant Space Catapult sounds like more fun ;)
Yes. Some info here http://blogs.nasa.gov/cm/blog/Ares I-X
Hehe. Space elevator? I've always wanted to see that.
I would love consistency. I have argued for it for years but driving into someone is not defending a position.
Yeah, I meant about workers. One of the major problems with retiring the Shuttle is that they'll have to lay off people, and that doesn't like to Florida's politicians. If they even think about moving away from there, they'll have big problems. So, moving the site is not only a climatological, but also (very) political issue
Like i say this time, they just happened to hit. There has been plenty of drivers weaving on straights to stop others going past or attempting to go "down the inside"
I think they are stuck in that location. I have never even seen an alternative site suggested by NASA
Hear hear. Watch the on-board view from Rubens' car.
So are they going back to a non-plane type capsule thing?
Will they test it before they decommission the shuttle?
It's nbasically a big Apollo
They have done some tests of sections. The reason they are modifying one of the shuttle pads is so that they can have a test flight.
As somebody in NASA called it, it's 'Apollo on steroids' :-)
Was it ever envisioned that the shuttle could land on the moon?
This is sad, from a technology point of view. At least as far as i'm concerned. I would like to see something like spaceship-X or whatever that Virgin thing is called.
Without air, you're stuck with a rocket landing approach
No, it's not capable of anything but low Earth orbit.
On that note,goodnight all.
night andy
Wow, GP+ is out super quick this weekend! 9:05!
I envisioned a vertical landing and takeoff
Hi sean, Bye Andy!
Can't they just beam down?
That just couldn't happen. The heat resitsant tiles get damaged in a normal launch. Can you imagine what they would be like once they got some lunar dust in them?
Spaceshipone
That would make things a lot easier
in that case, better go back to apollo's design and a modular system, which they are doing now. the shuttle is overcomplicated by the fact that it has to land as a plane, and that introduce many design compromises.
http://www.scaled.com/
specially with the beam up part of the things...
Ah yep, that's it.
So, is the whole "space plane" thing just a no-go?
It seems like a backward step to use a rocket stack with a capsule on the top rather than a re-useable craft that can land on a runway.
Why dont they use an aircraft launch system on a larger scale?
For low Earth orbit, maybe (but the Shuttle is too expensive). Further than that, it's useless.
Not completely. What they could do would be build a much bigger version of the shuttle and put the lunar lander in the cargo bay.
The real point of the VIrgin stuff is not to go into space as such but to use orbital flight for trans-continental travel. London to Sydney in an hour sort of thing.
The plane would need to be humungous and the loads on it would be incredible.
I fear hollywood has blinded me. I suppose weight is the real killer, they just can't get anything usable into space right?
Why would it need to be so big, if its cheaper and easier to launch you wouldnt need everything to be so big?
Weight is the big problem. For eery kg they deliver to orbit you need sever tons of fuel. So if you add any weight to the craft you add several thousand times that weight to the fuel tank. It makes KERS seem sensible.
See it in this way: the Shuttle with cargo weights in the order of the 100 tones. The whole package (Shuttle+tank+boosters) is around 3000 tones.
To get things like the Hubble into space?
If you are going to launch something that can take meaningful cargo to the moon to establish a base the amount of weight has to be high.
Yikes. Where are those pesky aliens with their technology when you need them?
They are having problems with the launch plane for spaceshiptwo which is only designed to carry a few passengers.
True, but sending it up bit by bit every day instead of once every 6 weeks?
I am sure their are reasons, These Nasa people are smarter than me
Thats part of virgin though, they dont know how to operate without problems
Get the space elevator going. There must be some small Pacific nation that will take it.
Actually, the shuttle has the biggest payload capacity of all the current and past vehicles. The problem of retiring the Shuttle is not only loosing the capacity to send people, but the capacity to send 30 tonnes, 10 meters wide things. That's why they're developing a cargo-only version of the Ares
It's all being done by Scaled Composites. Virgin is branding and operating the tourist business. Burt Rutan has total control of the technical side.
But the Klingons will use it to invade!
Oh yeah, that is a down side.
Nice idea, but quite not feasible now. We lack the proper materials to actually make the it :-(
What about those carbon nano-tubes I keep reading about?
It would take lots of nanotubes to make an elevator and they would need to be made in one piece
Oh, I thought they could weave them.
Hemp perhaps?
They're the principal candidates, but you have to make a tether at least 300km long from them. And as the word 'nano' indicates, there is a lot of orders of magnitude in the middle to cross :-)
basically, you would like to made a composite/alloy reinforced with them
The radio concept sounds awesome. Put me down for been a host somewhere, plus I'd can help with any design e.t.c you need
