It's Jarno Trulli's birthday today, the Italian hitting the grand age of 35 years old. I wonder if he will have any of his wine to celebrate the day, or if he will be sulking over finishing the German Grand Prix in 17th place, whilst his pitlane starting friend in Glock ended up 9th. Poor Trulli. Anyway, here's some other things going on today:

  • The stewards thought about it for a while and decided not to issue any penalty to Sutil or Raikkonen, deeming their collision to be a racing incident. Can't think why it took them so long to come to a decision, but who are we to question what the stewards do, eh?
  • Ross Brawn took another step along the "really quite a very good team boss" path, as he handled the Barrichello incident beautifully. Whilst I personally loved seeing a driver stamping his foot a bit, Brawn wasn't ruffled and said they'd talk about it and things would be fine.
  • If you want to catch up on all things Sidepodcast, we've got a Parade lap replay you can enjoy, plus the live stream of the Debrief and the delightful edited version as well. There should be an F1 Digest to consume later on today.

That should keep you busy for a while, but if you're bored with all that, then feel free to share what's on your mind as the day wears on. I will see you in the comments.

    Listening to rubens again...

I can conclude he is very mad. He slated the team massively to both Lee and Holly.

Were they trying to move him to a 2-stoppper when the fuel rig had problems?

  • Steven Roy13/07/2009 at 00:33

Were they trying to move him to a 2-stoppper when the fuel rig had problems?

No. They decided to keep him on a 3 but he thought that because his pits stop was so long they had switched.

  • Sean Golding13/07/2009 at 00:35

No. They decided to keep him on a 3 but he thought that because his pits stop was so long they had switched.

    As did everyone else.

  • Nick13/07/2009 at 00:36

No. They decided to keep him on a 3 but he thought that because his pits stop was so long they had switched.

They were saying in the friday press conference that everyone has simed the present tactics so much that everyone knows exatly what they are doing.

But with the field so close this year it amazes me brawn are throwing in 3 stoppers as if their car is a second a lap quicker.

  • Nick13/07/2009 at 00:38

Apparently croftie had a bet on heidfeld?

    oops!

  • guille230613/07/2009 at 00:38

But with the field so close this year it amazes me brawn are throwing in 3 stoppers as if their car is a second a lap quicker.

Maybe the tyres can't handle a lot of fuel load if they never get in temperature.

  • Paul13/07/2009 at 00:39

No. They decided to keep him on a 3 but he thought that because his pits stop was so long they had switched.

I must say, given their pace, and the RBR pace, i'm surprised both Brawns were not changed to a two stop.

  • Nick13/07/2009 at 00:40

Maybe the tyres can't handle a lot of fuel load if they never get in temperature.

That is a possibility, but they dont seem to be able to get them working properly even with light fuel

  • guille230613/07/2009 at 00:43

That is a possibility, but they dont seem to be able to get them working properly even with light fuel

I was thinking more in the wear of the tyre. Maybe if they are outside of the operational temperature AND you load them too much, they get destroyed too fast. So better be in a planed 3-stop than get into one because your tyres disappear in the middle of one of your 2-stops stints...

  • guille230613/07/2009 at 00:47

I must say, given their pace, and the RBR pace, i'm surprised both Brawns were not changed to a two stop.

When they did their second stop it was half of the race. It would have taken them a lot of time to put that fuel on, and they would have been really slow after that. Jenson made a couple of overtakes after his second stop because he was light. The moment to change strategy was the first stop, and at that moment Rubens was comfortably leading the race...

OK, good point. I thought the second stop was later. Seems they did have tyre issues as well.

  • Michael Kornbrekke13/07/2009 at 01:06

I am a bit disapointed with this Fantasy Racer thing this year. Having being a race late last year, I decided to take a gamble and choose both RBR drivers and Brawn driver from the start. Leaving me enough money to choose one other driver each week as a ring-in (I guess it could be classed as my teams test driver).

Even with the four best drivers out there I am only averaging 700 point or so a week GRRRR.

So a decision has been made to drop the “Grumpy man with scary teeth” aka Woobins and pick up a couple more test drivers.

Hopefully this will give me enough points to bring “miniracers” into the first page of the Sidepodcast league.

  • Steven Roy13/07/2009 at 01:08

I must say, given their pace, and the RBR pace, i'm surprised both Brawns were not changed to a two stop.

I thought it was odd they kept Barrichello on a 2 stopper and it was odd that the back up fuel rig was programmed to give less fuel than the main rig.

  • Steven Roy13/07/2009 at 01:09

  • Steven Roy13/07/2009 at 01:13

Maybe. I am not sure what the gap between their stops was or how long it takes to set a rig to a new amount.

  • Steven Roy13/07/2009 at 01:13

    Rubens wasn't also in a 3-stop?

    Yes

  • guille230613/07/2009 at 01:17

    Rubens wasn't also in a 3-stop?

    Yes

Then I don't find nothing odd about the second rig. It was programmed to give him fuel for a three stop strategy, as expected for the first. Rubens thought he was changed to a 2-stop because of the time, but they were always in a 3-stop strategy (which would have worked better without those 5 extra seconds)

Better-ish. Ferrari and Williams should never have beat them. I guess the slow cars on the track caused that.

The final result was really down to Kovalainen then Massa holding up faster cars.

and how annoying is that? Second race in a row the lack of ability to pass has spoiled what could be a good race

I still think that this race was more exciting than some others this season. It was still won in the pits and on strategy rather than on the racetrack, but it wasn't as processional as some other races we've had this season.

Yeah it doesn't really pay off to have all the expensive drivers in your team. For example for Germany the best team (I think) for you would have been: Webber

    Rosberg

    Alonso

    Massa

    Sutil

    Fisichella

    Kubica

    Heidfeld

which would have added up to about 960 points.

We really need someone to right some good technial regulations to massively cut aero then we can have racing

    Morning, everyone.

    Good news-bad news time:

    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/formula_1/article6689736.ece

The good news: CVC is pressuring Bernie to go - or at least relinquish his day-to-day duties.

The bad(?) news: It's rumored that Flavio will take over Bernie's role. Why bad(?) Flavio is OK in my book, but some of his proposals (like shortening race distances) are not my cup of tea.

  • Journeyer13/07/2009 at 07:09

You really need to hear him when he has a rant on Midweek Motorsport. He’s the world champion of ranting!

Not to mention a VERY good commentator. You should have heard him work the GP2 Sprint Race yesterday. His commentary on Petrov's penalty in particular (he even said WTF as an acronym) was nothing short of superb.

  • Sean Golding13/07/2009 at 07:14

    Good news-bad news time:

Hmm, I wonder if thats good or bad news. Who is worse, Bernie or Flavio? I agree that it is possibly both good and bad news.

Indeed and that's what Max was complaining about the other week.

CVC's legal position with Bernie is quite complicated. They can't actually fire him as I understand it. He just will become less prominent.

  • Alex Andronov13/07/2009 at 07:16

In my opinion what we're talking about is Flav being the negotiator at the races on Bernie's behalf.

I don't know, I think Flavio is a very good businessman who knows what makes people tick. I think he says a lot of the things he does just to get people to think about the subject rather than seriously propose it...

Yeah a little. Remember though, this is the guy that helped nurture the careers of Schumacher, Trulli, Fisichella, Alonso and Webber, which I hold him in high regard for…

Bernie also has a history of managing drivers (most notably Piquet Sr), but nowhere near as good as Flav (who, funnily enough, has Piquet Jr on his payroll).

  • Journeyer13/07/2009 at 07:34

  • Journeyer13/07/2009 at 07:35

I really don't understand how Flav would be able to do this role and continue to run Renault. Does this essentially mean the end of Renault?

  • Journeyer13/07/2009 at 07:43

Even brought Button in too before changing his mind.

I do remember, though, that Flav decided to leave Bourdais in the cold after he had a disagreement on future plans. Because of that, it took Bourdais many years before he got another crack at F1.

Maybe that was a good decision after all, considering how Bourdais has done in F1 (Sorry Christine)?

On the subject of Bourdy I see him alternating between Peugeot and IndyCar duties from now on... I think he's much better suited to those series...

I have woken up to find this:

Wow - Natali Del Conte and now Franck Montagny. Awesome Stuff!

  • F1Wolf13/07/2009 at 08:07

I like the idea that he was "just surfing the internet" which really means "googling myself."

    careful,he might be reading :-)

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/07/2009 at 08:08

Maybe that was a good decision after all, considering how Bourdais has done in F1 (Sorry Christine)?

No need to apologize - Christine fell out with Bourdais quite some time ago. :D

I feel kinda bad saying it still. I just think he's one of those drivers who is definitely talented, just not suited to F1. You wait and see - he'll win stuff, something big like Le Mans I'm sure!

I sat almost opposite him before the start of Le Mans. The buzz around that car was cool!

    Everyone does it!

  • Journeyer13/07/2009 at 08:14

He’s always had clunkers in there to be honest. He knows that sometimes to get the good drivers you need to make a deal with their managers about somebody else.

For someone who started in clothing rather than motorsport, I am amazed how good Flav is in finding good talent.

My Vanity Search revealed an author, a Rugby League PLayer and some Mathematics Professors (ironically I am a Mathematician, so that was cool!)

Bernie says he's not going anywhere, people are just making up stories. And he's fixing F1 and it will be done within 48 hours:

    http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/76942

  • Alex Andronov13/07/2009 at 08:47

    two key quotes:

"I hope to have a Concorde Agreement in place by Wednesday. Max [Mosley] will be happy when we have it sorted. He will have achieved everything he set out to achieve including a new agreement and cost-cutting. He will then be in a position to do what he said he would do and step down. But as for me, I'll be around for the future."

    and

    CVC said:

"Bernie Ecclestone will remain in post," he explained. "There's no question of moving him into an honorary position or upstairs. There has never been any doubt about

    that.

"There have been no meetings to discuss it. Bernie knows me well enough to know his position is not under threat. He runs the business and does so very well.

"We did not like what he said about Hitler. He knows that and it was dealt with. That's the end of the matter. There never was anything more to it than that."

  • Alex Andronov13/07/2009 at 08:54

Yeah but what about YOUR GMM bit like you mentioned in the parade lap yesterday?

    Ah yes sorry!

GMM: Bernie to take over the FIA, FOM and FOTA within 48 hours claims Bernie. The pretense that I'm not in charge has gone on long enough

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/07/2009 at 08:55

Ah it's Jonathon Noble it must be okay

Jonny Noble is at the track, he's very much OK when it comes to reporting a story!

Wow. How did that happen - was he playing this week for him to pass Del Potro? Whatever happened, good on Andy. :)

I don't think either of them played, but this time last year Del Potro won in Stuttgart and by not defending it he lost 500 points, so now Andy is 15 points ahead even though neither of them have done anything in the last week. Tennis rankings are weeeeird but I guess theres honestly no easier way of doing it :D

They aren't that wierd are they. It's just a rolling chart, similar to other rankings, or charts like last.fm and stuff.

On an aside, I don't like Andy roddick. ;)

  • Amy13/07/2009 at 09:16

Yeah they're just rolling so your points are only ever 52 weeks worth. So many people get confused by them, but I think its more that this year they changed the value of all the tournaments and doubled last years points to match the new higher values.

In other news, why have they started advertising Magnums on TV? I am trying not to buy them anymore but everytime I see the ad I remember how good they taste...

Turns out it rewards consistent scoring and not just winning Grand Slams. Good for the sport or encourages burnouts?

I think good for the sport because watching tournaments where the highest seeded player is ranked 80th in the world sucks. For people who only watch tennis four times a year it'd be great, but not for year-round fans.

  • Scott in Italy13/07/2009 at 09:22

yeah but it's not made (or perhaps more accurately owned) by an f1 driver :) i live here and i still haven't had any. Might order some this week though.

Bourdais not fitting in with RB's image? We all know that's a bunch of doo-doo - he was dumped because he wasn't quick enough, and that's that.

Plus rubens finally gets angry. To quote REM.... it's the end of the world as we know it!

GP Week mentions that Repsol are set to supply fuel to both Red Bull teams as part of the deal to have Alguersuari in the Toro Rosso seat.

Interestingly, Piquet may have been linked with the STR drive as well. Bourdais for Piquet? Deal of the century! :-D

the last driver sacked midway through the season was Scott Speed (sacked by who else, Toro Rosso, replaced by Sebastain Vettel). :-)

  • Christine13/07/2009 at 11:02

That said Christine, I wouldn't want to take anything off Sidepodcast :)

Here are five off the top of my head.

    1) Ari Vatanen appears to be the saviour of F1, but what kind of changes can he bring about? Will it be an end to the politics of F1? I know Nick would be very disappointed if that happened. What would Formula 1 be like without Max at the helm?

    2) Toro Rosso appear to be bringing Jaime on board because they have no option to test him up in time for 2010. Whilst these cost cutting measures appear to be all good for new teams, what effect is this having on the show? Putting drivers in the car who are not ready is never a good idea *cough* Ide.

    3) F1 circuits seem to be adding more and more activities to their facilities to try and bring in the crowds. We’ve got music at Singapore, and rollercoasters at the Nurburgring. Do you think this works? What kind of things would you like to see at tracks? Should they be trying to open F1 up to the wider, perhaps not particularly interested, public?

    4) Webber has finally won a race. This leaves Heidfeld as the main “veteran” without a win. Will it ever happen for Quick Nick? Why is he so consistant but never at the top?

    5) Supposing F1 survives, who will get the seats in the three new teams? Will it be new people, or experienced people? Villeneuve said it’s all about experience with the testing ban – but how far do you push it with calling people back to the task?

  • Mawech13/07/2009 at 11:03

    James;-

In your podium stats there are 26 podium places accounted for

    Brawn = 11

    Red Bull = 10

    Toyota = 3

    Ferrari = 2

It should be noted that Al-goo... Alger.... Alga.... Not Seb (it IS easier) was racing in British F3 last year with Scary Hairy Boy and beat him to the championship, so I guess it's fair...

  • Lukeh13/07/2009 at 11:35

    Rubens on twitter:

I would not have won the race as the Red Bulls were half a second faster per lap but 3rd was very possible without the pit problems

Wanna know how he's feeling about Brawn though :(

  • Dank13/07/2009 at 11:35

you think it’s a bit cheeky to bring hartley back now?

Highly unlikely that either party will backtrack now. Hartley wants to commit to F3/FR3.5 and get his career back on course. Out of the Red Bull Junior driver pool at the moment, the only other driver showing promise at the moment is Rob Wickens in F2 - which is supposedly the new feeder series to F1...

  • Dank13/07/2009 at 11:37

I don't think a driver should make a jump from F3 mid-season with no testing into F1. It's too quick and you don't get a polished well rounded driver.

  • James13/07/2009 at 11:49

it's sort of half implemented. we made it work one way and then changed it, but not very well. needs a bit of tweeking.

Ah I see, I only use this way because I tend to get distracted forget lclt is open and don't want to be confused when I come back to read :)

  • Dank13/07/2009 at 11:49

are either really up for this challenge though? have red bull actually done any straightline testing this year, shouldn’t algae been running up and down some runway in preparation?

RB have done a few straight line tests this year in the Midlands somewhere I can't remember where - same place Force India uses.

It'll be interesting to see how Alguersuari fares in FP1 during Hungary, I don't think he'll be as bad as everyone is expecting him to be. There seems to be this unwritten rule that you have to work your way up the career ladder in motor racing to reach F1, but Raikkonen for example was plucked from Formula Renault (below where Alguersuari is at the moment) and Button from British F3 and look at what those two haven't done too bad.

Alguersuari is expected to race at Le Mans this weekend fulfilling his FR3.5 duties and then, rumour has it, have a seat fitting and do some tests in Italy.

You are right, but both Button and Raikkonen took a few years before they properly matured as drivers.

I just don't like this idea that there's 20 guys spending $2million a year in GP2 that just get ignored for a young kid who has never even experienced their level yet... seems wrong to me. At least drivers like Lewis did GP2!

that must be the fault of gp2 though?

red bull need to show that their young driver program offers some kind of return, so they're limited by the people they can choose.

if i were being cynical, i'd suggest significant jump in pace from STR at the next race, as RBR start sharing more setup data, in return for the team running a "preferred driver". but we shall see.

Yep also a very good point. But as Jackie Stewart says, there's a staircase of talent out there, but I think Jaime has bypassed this by taking a Red Bull-sponsored lift to the top! :)

You'd think Red Bull would share the data, after all the more cars between them and Brawn the better.

  • Journeyer13/07/2009 at 11:57

Funnily enough, this was one of the headlines on Google News:

F1 less relevant to Honda's goals: CEO

"It was a real shame that we had to leave Formula One," Takanobu Ito, who took over as chief executive last month, told a media gathering in Tokyo.

"On the other hand, F1 is becoming less of a medium in which companies can test their various strengths and more of an event with mounting restrictions.

"There's little room for us to challenge new fields, so bearing in mind the current state of series, I don't think we have the desire to return, even if the economy improves."

And yet all the other manufacturers decided to stay in F1. I guess Honda's objectives in F1 were different from the others'?

  • me13/07/2009 at 12:01

You'd think Red Bull would share the data, after all the more cars between them and Brawn the better.

maybe. but i get the impression the choice to run bourdais didn't please top management. they wanted sato, for promotional purposes, but he couldn't come up with the cash (i'm still expecting him to pop up in a car in suzuka btw, but we'll see).

taking on the new guy might find them receive more technical data in the post, but who knows?

  • Lukeh13/07/2009 at 12:02

Based on the translations that are really awful on various websites, Rubens and Brawn have turned the page from what happened and he is very thankful for all the support he got which is nice :)

Now he gets to spend some time with his kids, and that it will be a good day. Awwwwww. :)

  • Journeyer13/07/2009 at 12:05

Based on the translations that are really awful on various websites, Rubens and Brawn have turned the page from what happened and he is very thankful for all the support he got which is nice

Just as well, too. But will it affect Rubens' chances for next year?

  • Alex Andronov13/07/2009 at 12:08

taking on the new guy might find them receive more technical data in the post, but who knows?

Reading between quite a few lines we had a lot of comments last year from Newey talking about the difficulties of having to run cars with two different setups and engine packagings re: Renault and Ferrari.

This year he's talking about how he didn't really want to have KERS because he didn't want to have a different setup between his two cars.

I think Newey had a bit of a chat with Red Bull management and said, "There's a rule change coming, don't distract me with Torro Rosso rubbish". And they agreed.

And that's why I think Torro Rosso are doing worse.

  • Lukeh13/07/2009 at 12:09

Just as well, too. But will it affect Rubens' chances for next year?

We'll see what happens I suppose. I still think they'll make a decision at the end of the year based on the entire season rather than basing it on the comments yesterday.

I don't think Rubens has a problem with the team or they have a problem with him anyways, I just think it was supr of the moment reaction of a frustrating afternoon that he just let out like that.

  • Alex Andronov13/07/2009 at 12:12

Just as well, too. But will it affect Rubens' chances for next year?

It won't affect his chances for next year. Because there was no chance Rubens will be there next year (sorry Lukeh)

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/07/2009 at 12:15

Maybe that's why he gets so agitated after the races ... he knows this is his last chance?

  • me13/07/2009 at 12:19

And that's why I think Torro Rosso are doing worse.

could be right. if they wanted to though, could they not assign someone else to that role. why does it have to be newey passing the info on?

  • Alex Andronov13/07/2009 at 12:22

could be right. if they wanted to though, could they not assign someone else to that role. why does it have to be newey passing the info on?

What I mean is that last time Newey was optimising for both. Now he isn't.

  • Alex Andronov13/07/2009 at 12:23

Maybe that's why he gets so agitated after the races ... he knows this is his last chance?

I think he was annoyed because a) he's just been overtaken in the championship, and b) this is his only chance to win the championship.

We might not think that he has a chance, but there is no way a driver like Rubens wouldn't hope right now for his chance to win the championship.

  • Lukeh13/07/2009 at 12:25

We might not think that he has a chance, but there is no way a driver like Rubens wouldn't hope right now for his chance to win the championship.

He knows he can still go for it and he has the car to do so. He's just obviously peed off that things aren't going his way in the same they are for Jenson. People seem to get the idea that this means the team are favouring Jenson over him but how can you improve over a teammate who has driven as superbly as Jenson has this year?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/07/2009 at 12:26

  • me13/07/2009 at 12:28

ahh okay. but str have been moaning that they're not getting any help either.

  • Lukeh13/07/2009 at 12:28

He wouldn't be worth his place if he didn't believe he could win it ... so that won't help!

Definitely. Plus he's a vital part of the team - lots of times this year jenson has mentioned how the team have run off and improved upon from Rubens' information through practise and whatnot.

  • Jon Waldock13/07/2009 at 12:29

    Morning!! How are we all?

People seem to get the idea that this means the team are favouring Jenson over him but how can you improve over a teammate who has driven as superbly as Jenson has this year?

Part of that is true - I think. I don't think Rubens thinks they are favouring Jenson. And we know Ross has brought a lot of advances to the team... But Brawn are a small operation versus Ferrari and now they're up at the top and in the spotlight mistakes in the pits seem common (of course Rubens will ignore that Ferrari don't seem to be very good in the pits anymore either). And this mistakes are crucial.

I think Rubens doens't think that Jenson has driven better than him. I don't think drivers really think like that. He's trying to work out how when he beat Jenson in the rubbish car he can't beat Jenson in the good car.

And he's out of answers unfortunately. (The actual answer is, I believe, that Jenson is better in an ideal car, Rubens is more adaptable to whatever he's given).

It's half way through the season. He needs to start hauling Jenson in, and when Jenson is behind him he needs to be winning.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)13/07/2009 at 12:33

    Also,

on the whole subject of Jamie Superaguri. I think this will either give him a major boost, or ruin him, being in a rubbish car and at the back of the grid with little opportunity for making big improvements can screw up a drivers confidence

    Hello Everybody!

    Firstly...

I have woken up to find this:http://iheartfranck.com/about-me/#comments

    Wow! Thats awesome!

    2ndly

Moving on, I'm surprised that JA hasn't updated his blog since Friday. Now, I know he usually has other stuff to do, but he usually finds time to update his blog at least after the race.

He has, but some sort of technical change means you need to update your RSS to http://www.jamesallenonf1.com/

    3rdly...

    1) Ari Vatanen appears to be the saviour of F1, but what kind of changes can he bring about? Will it be an end to the politics of F1? I know Nick would be very disappointed if that happened.

    :D hehehe

You won't find any recent ones. Grand prix World is the most recent one I;d say from 2000.... although you can get a 2009 update for it. However it hates XP and Vista, it works on them, but is very very dodgy.

  • Sean Golding13/07/2009 at 13:11

  • Chris_Humphreys - Force India No. 1 Fan13/07/2009 at 13:12

I'm reading information on the game from the amazon page and it has the following included:

    # Pit stops: Full pit-stop integration allows you to alter your strategy mid-race to refuel and repair damage incurred

    # Pit Radio: Your team provides vital race information and strategic advice over the radio as you drive your way to the front of the pack

I have always wanted to change my tire compound during a race

1929 (sound effect), 1942 (v.), comic strip word (especially from "Buck Rogers in the Twenty-Fifth Century"), of imitative origin. Meaning "to erase electronically" is 1982.

This is just another example of F1 ignoring the fans; just about every one wants to keep it, it adds to the tension as we try to figure out who's doing what, but Mad Max and the poison dwarf say no. So stuff you lot you just pay up and lump it.

good answer ;) it's not a lot of water but these guys are supposedly at the peak of their sport and don't need it. I'd struggle with wearing that suit for longer than 10 minutes inside, but in a race car, I'd be needing a lot more than 1.5 hours. speaking of bikes, i need to get mine fixed since the gear system decided to try and remove itself.

  • Jon Waldock13/07/2009 at 14:02

smacks of effort if you ask me (and you didn't)

hehe, yep, too much effort. i'm just trying to work out how to make it work, i'm potentially going up to the lake district for a bit of youth hostelling/biking/camping, and i have a fully functional hybrid and a mountain bike that wont take a front brake (my brother bent one of the forks in, woo go him) and i'm not sure my hybrid will cope with the harsh lake district trails.

  • Mawech13/07/2009 at 14:03

You coul fit disc breakes to both sets of wheels and then either wold work on either frame

i dont *need* one, but on past experience, i would like one. on the fast trails with only a back brake (and a pretty rubbish one at that) i have to think about braking alot earlier, so with 2 working brakes, you can carry alot more speed through the corners

  • Mawech13/07/2009 at 14:10

See perfectly sensible question; you no doubt will counter with some wimpy excuse about stopping before you hit the trees!

Couple things i've picked up from Martins gridwalk...

    a) Martin couldnt find Heikki when he was by Lewis's car, i wonder why?!

    b) Even though Sutil started in a points position (or as near as), he was still very realistic that he was going for a top 10

BBC are asking for questions for Murray. http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/murraywalker/2009/07/murray_walkers_german_grand_pr.html#P82808267

I asked him if he thought Rossi or any other motorsports star could successfully move into F1...

    I don't think so

  • Scott in Italy13/07/2009 at 14:31

I asked him if he thought Rossi or any other motorsports star could successfully move into F1...

I still see that as no chance. It was getting talked about even in the last month but I guy who can drive a bike can't [necessarily] drive an F1 car. But he'd be great publicity and I think the two teams play that card every off season with the rumours/testing.

  • Mawech13/07/2009 at 14:31

    The 11th quickest didn't win

  • Nick13/07/2009 at 14:32

James Toseland (Moto GP rider) once did a Williams Simulator session, and where he lost the most time was in the high speed stuff, because he just couldnt get their head round downforce, it didnt feel right

  • Mawech13/07/2009 at 14:33

    Ah Sorry misunderstood your question

  • Nick13/07/2009 at 14:33

Wasnt it Trulli or Fisi a few years back, i will look

    Thanks to Alianora

Giancarlo Fisichella, Brazil 2003. He had the 11th fastest lap, but kept running at that pace so consistently (and avoided pit lanes so much) that it didn’t matter that half the people with better “fastest laps” were still on the road at the end of the race.

  • Mawech13/07/2009 at 14:35

I read you question as pertaining to yesterday's race; not yesterday's discussions

  • Mawech13/07/2009 at 14:36

I still think Ross' comments to be a truism though.

  • Nick13/07/2009 at 14:37

he basically meant 'it's not that our strategy wasnt good enough, our cars just naff at the moment"

  • Nick13/07/2009 at 14:37

I still think Ross' comments to be a truism though.

Yeah, maybe he should have said 'its nearly impossible'

  • Mawech13/07/2009 at 14:37

Maybe he should have said "You cannot visit the pits more than most as well as have the 11th fastest lap time and still expect to win"

except in reality a second is miles off the pace. when you have the same car.

  • Jon Waldock13/07/2009 at 14:51

except in reality a second is miles off the pace. when you have the same car.

but, compared to schumey, and with a driver who hasnt done slicks and wings ever. thats pretty amazing. with a bit more practice he'd be right up there

  • me13/07/2009 at 14:52

but, compared to schumey, and with a driver who hasnt done slicks and wings ever. thats pretty amazing. with a bit more practice he'd be right up there

he's very good in an F1 car - it's just that it'd take him more time to be F1 champ than MotoGP champ. but i think he still would've done well had he taken the F1 drive.

  • Nick13/07/2009 at 15:05

if he thought he could get up there, he'd have taken the drive. he gave it his all, came up short, shuffled back to bikes.

He didnt want to spend a year as the ferrari tester.

He would have lost a lot of money from sponsors as well.

  • me13/07/2009 at 15:06

He didnt want to spend a year as the ferrari tester.

    tester? that would've been daft.

surely the team only suggested that after they realised he'd be no good as a driver?

  • Journeyer13/07/2009 at 15:07

    tester? that would've been daft.

from my understanding, he needed to have a transition year into F1, and he'd have to do that alongside his MotoGP commitments.

  • Jon Waldock13/07/2009 at 15:07

surely the team only suggested that after they realised he'd be no good as a driver?

you saying that all testers are useless drivers? of course not. if he tested then he could get really good, they're not gonna put someone who's learning the ropes in a ferrari

  • Nick13/07/2009 at 15:08

surely the team only suggested that after they realised he'd be no good as a driver?

It was back when teams ran 3rd drivers on Friday. I think they wanted to do further evaluation on him and get him to know the circuits in an F1 car before giving him the drive.

I think Massa took it the following season anyway.

  • me13/07/2009 at 15:17

neither situation would help him. he wasn't fast enough / good enough.

I tried it for the first time since i was about 6 this year.

    Really really overrated.

You may want to not read this then.

I've done well over 1400 miles, used nearly 500 litres of fuel, not cared about speed limits and killed and eaten several furry animals.

    Awesome...

Do you mean you used the car to kill the animals, then ate them?

  • Flibster13/07/2009 at 16:15

Used a russian sniper rifle, an american shotgun and a british pistol.

Shot Boar when I lived in Switzerland though

Did you know as a Swiss citizen between the ages of 18 & 50 you have to have a gun and know how to use it.

    Hello everyone.

I've found the replacement to the FOM live timing. I never realized that SpeedTV.com has a cool live timing feature that also archieves the races.

Worth a look. Next race I am going to try it to see how well it works.

That looks quite good, Ive noticed a couple of newspapers over here have been offering some sort of timing thing, but when i tried for Australia they didnt work.

That one looks a lot slicker though, i will give it a go for the next race if i remember¬!

I hate to make this a 'mr c will fix it' session but maybe someone on here can help... go knwos how many times I've come asking for help in the past few months :( anyways I'm trying to work out how on c++ to, once a serial file is created, how to add new records to it whilst maintaining the old ones entered befoerehand...

the one I did for the exam before was quite simply a clusterred mess of unstructured code and overcomplicated nincompoopery, now ive found a simpyl solution with serial files but the actual problem im still having is as ive started, it just deletes everything everytime I add new data to the file. Which is a bit silly :(

I was trying to create a front end using Vb.net (it is the only visual language I know) for FTP. I found loads of examples for VB6 but hardly any for Vb.net. I'm not too bothered by not having it and it is beyond my knowledge and what I've been taught.

Hmm, sounds like your writing just to file rather than ammending the file. I haven't touched C++ in a while and I've never heard of a serial file. Binary and text files are all I've had the pleasure of.

  • Lukeh13/07/2009 at 16:54

so you want to open a file and append, as opposed to open a file and overwrite, correct?

Pretty much. I appear to be overwriting every time...

  • James13/07/2009 at 16:56

understood. there are free pc ftp apps out there. or are you trying something specific.

It was going to be a combination of a few things so everything was in the one program. I was trying to make it is simple as possible because the other clients he uses he doesn't like using for some reason. I'll come up with something though :)

so you want to open a file and append, as opposed to open a file and overwrite, correct?

Or what Mr C said :P

  • Mawech13/07/2009 at 16:58

From the very dim and distant past in some high level languages how you wrote to a file depended on how you opened it i.e. you had to define up front if you were opening for update or addition

That is what I was thinking of but serial files were mentioned so that threw me slightly.

  • Lukeh13/07/2009 at 17:00

    Ooh!

it can be as simple as that yep. Honestly ive just found some stuff on that in my previous notes as you mentioned it but i've never used it wierdly enough, but that looks perfect if I get it working. cheers, will give it a shot :)

good question posted by pitmonster over on pitlane fanatic, following the ruining of lewis' race yesterday:

"should the FIA get Bridgestone to make their tyres more puncture-resistant? I don’t mean run-flat tyres with gel/foam insert or super-stiff sidewalls, just a thicker/tougher carcase that can touch a front wing and not immediately go ‘pop’"

hmmm. i actually think bridgestone's tyres are much more durable now than they were during the tyre war with michelin. that said, i guess there's always more that can be done.

  • Jon Waldock13/07/2009 at 17:16

i'd like to see tyres a bit stiffer, in construction and compound. cars would slide more :D

  • Nick13/07/2009 at 17:16

"should the FIA get Bridgestone to make their tyres more puncture-resistant? I don’t mean run-flat tyres with gel/foam insert or super-stiff sidewalls, just a thicker/tougher carcase that can touch a front wing and not immediately go ‘pop’"

They seem to be pretty thick alreadly, I think the main priority should be for the tyres to work properly. I dont think they should be the most noticeable part of a race.

Also hitting sharp shards at over 100 mph would likely puncture anything, they haven't been as many caused by running over debris on the track as there used to be.

Also there is the issue of cost cutting... I cant see it being changed.

Any tree hugging hippie enviromentalists about?

I am a conservation biologist specialising in information management sciences. As far as tree hugging - if it is endangered/rare tree I will hug it, but if its an introduced pest species I will cut it down or poison it! I subscribe to environmentalism that is long-term self-survival for ourselves so is the ultimate ultimate selfish pursuit for our species.

I just read this on Autosport from Christian Horner about Webbo:

"I don't think he is still at full fitness. He cannot run. He is carrying an extra bit of ballast in his leg which Adrian [Newey] is not too happy about, but I think that he has dealt with the injury."

Seems a bit mean of Newey to be obsessing over some metal in the poor guy's leg!

Also this bit: "Certainly we had some concerns, because he forgot to tell us that he broke his shoulder as well."

    That's brilliant!

Wasn't the reason he was replaced was that he had too many racing commitments?

clearly not, no. he was replaced because they didn't want to give him bourdais' permanent seat.

Tbh it sounded pretty weak at the time, didn't it? If you're a young driver doing F3, WSR and F1 testing - would you give up the F1? No I wouldn't either, unless I was pushed.

It's so disappointing. Whenever I vanity search, it always turns up stuff I'm actually doing. Boo. I want an internet namesake.

I'm on wikipedia. And also a motorbike accessory outfit.

Might try my full name sometime.

Can someone hit Twitter's website please. That 'More' button is really irritating.

    which button and why?

  • Pat W13/07/2009 at 18:57

    which button and why?

When you go to your profile page and try to read back...

  • Nick13/07/2009 at 18:57

I think i have just realised how useless i am.

I just got annoyed that a pack of sausages didnt have cooking instructions on them...

...before i realised i have done this several times before. Doh!

Maybe i do need a girlfriend.

  • me13/07/2009 at 18:58

When you go to your profile page and try to read back...

you don't like it? christine asked the other day for the same thing on doohickey. am currently investigating.

  • Christine13/07/2009 at 18:58

Maybe i do need a girlfriend.

    Or a cookbook?

  • Scott WoodwissAs13/07/2009 at 18:58

Maybe i do need a girlfriend.

    As do i.

  • Pat W13/07/2009 at 18:58

    which button and why?

When you go to your profile page and try to read back...

It used to be that you could go back page by page.

Now you have to wait for a script to load tweets underneath the current ones. It is slow and doesn't always work, and after you've sat and waited for it 4 or 5 times and it fails... that gets annoying.

  • Pat W13/07/2009 at 18:59

you don't like it? christine asked the other day for the same thing on doohickey. am currently investigating.

It would be good if it worked.

  • me13/07/2009 at 18:59

It would be good if it worked.

    ahh, okay.

  • Pat W13/07/2009 at 19:00

you don't like it? christine asked the other day for the same thing on doohickey. am currently investigating.

I suppose I just don't understand why there isn't an option to change "view last 20 tweets" to "view last 100 tweets" or more, instead of having to click through each time.

  • Pat W13/07/2009 at 19:00

Maybe i do need a girlfriend.

    Or a cookbook?

Can I have both or is that greedy?

  • Christine13/07/2009 at 19:01

Can I have both or is that greedy?

    Of course you can.

  • Nick13/07/2009 at 19:02

    Or a cookbook?

It would have to be a realy simple one to tell me how to do saussages...

I dont think the cookbook can tell me when i am doing it all wrong either ;)

  • Christine13/07/2009 at 19:03

I dont think the cookbook can tell me when i am doing it all wrong either ;)

Ah yes, girls are very good at that.

  • Scott Woodwiss13/07/2009 at 19:03

I dont think the cookbook can tell me when i am doing it all wrong either ;)

Simple solution - give the cookbook to your girlfriend. Kill two birds with one stone. ;)

  • Pat W13/07/2009 at 19:03

    Of course you can.

Where are they hiding? Not the cookbooks, they are on Amazon. I suppose in the olden days you would go to a shop to buy a cookbook and meet a potential girlfriend there.

  • Christine13/07/2009 at 19:04

  • Scott Woodwiss13/07/2009 at 19:05

    What was she called, Bob?

No, we nicked the nachos from Mr C's stay

Speaking of looking back... I'm watching A1GP from Malaysia.. from December. When that's done I'll catch up with Lou's photos because I missed that they'd been posted.

Didn't we have a few people a long time ago up for that? I'm sure Lou was one of them.

When you record them you need someone sat in the corner with a machine like they have in a courtroom, the name of which I've temporarily forgotten.

  • Christine13/07/2009 at 19:59

Didn't we have a few people a long time ago up for that? I'm sure Lou was one of them.

Mmhmm. Have always said, anyone is free to do it. Haven't seen any evidence yet though. It's harder than it looks :)

  • me13/07/2009 at 19:59

Also true. Splitting it up into ten minutes or so would be ideal.

  • Pat W13/07/2009 at 20:00

Never seen one of those in a courtroom

True... But if a judge has to be there when its used doesnt it make it a courtroom?

Ok... this is very morbid. Best stop

  • James13/07/2009 at 20:03

    Awww man.

The early shows aren't that long compared to recent ones, if you want to do a shorter show RG. ;)

The thing is that I type fast... but you still couldn't do it in realtime. And if a show takes 2:30hrs to listen to it takes too long for any single person to transcribe - although Christine has made valiant efforts.

  • Nick13/07/2009 at 20:09

Ok the time has come... I am nervously opening up my goodwood videos and already praying i remember how to use premiere

I can't play the piano. But I learned for 7 years.

After 7 years of training I can play 3 blind mice - badly. I still think it was worth it :)

  • Scott Woodwiss13/07/2009 at 20:15

Reason is because the guy who's made the team is someone I know from RD and is a VERY fast driver. We're also in the XTCC together in the Chevy team.

Well it's all on the official game's shop website forums, so yes, it is quite a serious championship by the looks of it!

    Although they have patched it...

Glitches or no glitches, I love it. There's something about it that makes me drive lap after lap after lap and never get bored sometimes.

  • Alex Andronov13/07/2009 at 20:18

I find using my thumb unorthodox. I remember once back at school in Peterborough, our IT teacher told us pressing Space bar with your thumb was the right way. But I've always hit it with the index finger.

  • Nick13/07/2009 at 20:20

Although I still think that Christine's unusual use of the index finger to press the space button must be slowing her down.

Thats the one part of typing i know how to do properly!

Some days i can do it for ages and not get bored, but i usually have to have some cars on the track too, even if its set to easy and they're not even close to me.

I've found that on certain classes hard is incredibly challenging (mainly some of the touring cars that understeer like nobodys business) but easy is too easy. So i've put it to manual gearbox and put it on easy, its alot more difficult then, and when i get the hang of that, theres a "manual with clutch" setting

    :D

In any racing game I always have manual gearbox (auto clutch), cockpit view, as default. I'm better at front-wheel drive touring cars than rear-wheel drive single seaters though.

In any racing game I always have manual gearbox (auto clutch), cockpit view, as default. I'm better at front-wheel drive touring cars than rear-wheel drive single seaters though.

Same on the gearbox front. I used to run with automatic back in the PS1-GT1-just starting out on racing games-days. But I taught myself how to use manual gears and now I can't stand automatic. At any events with a simulator, I request if I can run manual gears if possible. They're actually OK with it anyway.

  • Pat W13/07/2009 at 20:25

  • Pat W13/07/2009 at 20:53

    Mayo and reggae reggae!

    What's that stuff like?

  • Andy Taylor13/07/2009 at 20:54

    FRANCK!

What's he done? I know it's not a drive for Torro Rosso.

  • Jon Waldock13/07/2009 at 20:54

    How?

Well...less me fixing it, more turning the computer off and on again. Stupid itunes.

Ooh looks nice. Much better than my 1min on the hob pasta-with-filling and microwaved sauce from a pot.

  • Nick13/07/2009 at 20:54

    What's that stuff like?

    Sunshiney?

Fruity with a little bit of kick would probably describe it best

  • me13/07/2009 at 20:55

    FRANCK!

  • RG13/07/2009 at 20:55

Ever so slightly better than that

  • Pat W13/07/2009 at 20:55

Fruity with a little bit of kick would probably describe it best

Ah okay, may try that then

  • Nick13/07/2009 at 20:57

Ah okay, may try that then

They do a ketchup as well which is similar... i think its better.

    Save the best to last.

  • RG13/07/2009 at 21:08

    James is keen :)

Hehe, gonna do the Karting one. I quite liked that episode.

  • Christine13/07/2009 at 21:09

Hehe, gonna do the Karting one. I quite liked that episode.

Might be a good one, there's a lot of me in there. It's much easier with less voices.

  • me13/07/2009 at 21:09

    wow, you guys are awesome.

  • James13/07/2009 at 21:10

    James is keen :)

Hehe. I'm starting with the one and see how it goes. I've come up with an idea, I'm going to slow it down so your speaking real slow :D

Mr C do you really want to go to Spain to see Alonso (Re: Debrief)? :P

  • Christine13/07/2009 at 21:10

    wow, you guys are awesome.

    Why didn't I do this sooner?? :)

  • Nick13/07/2009 at 21:10

    Save the best to last.

OK i will keep it for the final edit then

  • me13/07/2009 at 21:10

    http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Help+Us+Transcribe

you should include a link to an existing transcript in there somewhere. one that shows more than one voice.

  • Christine13/07/2009 at 21:11

you should include a link to an existing transcript in there somewhere. one that shows more than one voice.

    Good plan.

  • me13/07/2009 at 21:11

Mr C do you really want to go to Spain to see Alonso (Re: Debrief)? :P

the atmosphere would be awesome. them fans are crazy. not sure if it'll happen though, i say a lot of things.

    why?

  • James13/07/2009 at 21:12

    why?

Hehe I remember wanting to ask you when I listened back to live feed, and now I've just heard it again and I remembered :D

  • Nick13/07/2009 at 21:13

    why?

There are quite a few educated people who suspect Mr Alonso may well be the Devil Reincarnated...

    Jus' Saying is all :P

  • James13/07/2009 at 21:13

    why?

There are quite a few educated people who suspect Mr Alonso may well be the Devil Reincarnated...

    Jus' Saying is all :P

Haha, I'm not one of them though :P

  • me13/07/2009 at 21:14

Hehe I remember wanting to ask you when I listened back to live feed, and now I've just heard it again and I remembered :D

depending on who you believe, it'll likely be the only time it'll ever happen. if alonso does go to ferrari, there will be no more road shows for the man.

you probably wouldn't see very much, but i just like the idea of hanging out with that many crazy people.

  • Nick13/07/2009 at 21:16

you probably wouldn't see very much, but i just like the idea of hanging out with that many crazy people.

Would you do it wearing a Hamilton cap? It would make a great video!

  • Jon Waldock13/07/2009 at 21:17

Would you do it wearing a Hamilton cap? It would make a great video!

oh man, that would be amazing. you'd get killed

  • James13/07/2009 at 21:17

Would you do it wearing a Hamilton cap? It would make a great video!

That...is just asking for trouble :D

  • me13/07/2009 at 21:17

Haha, I'm not one of them though :P

    are you thinking of going?

  • RG13/07/2009 at 21:17

oh man, that would be amazing. you'd get killed

Anybody we don't like who's unsuspecting?

  • James13/07/2009 at 21:18

    are you thinking of going?

I'd love to, considering I lost my passport and haven't replaced it yet there is a bit of a problem

  • Christine13/07/2009 at 21:19

you probably wouldn't see very much, but i just like the idea of hanging out with that many crazy people.

Can I just hold up my hand and say am not so sure about that!?

  • me13/07/2009 at 21:19

I'd love to, considering I lost my passport and haven't replaced it yet there is a bit of a problem

hehe. you may struggle with that :)

sept 5th seems so close and we have much to do in the meantime. we shall see.

  • me13/07/2009 at 21:20

Can I just hold up my hand and say am not so sure about that!?

    you.would.hate.it.

but i had factored that into my non-plans.

  • Nick13/07/2009 at 21:20

Can I just hold up my hand and say am not so sure about that!?

It does sound like an outdoor based activity!

  • Christine13/07/2009 at 21:20

but i had factored that into my non-plans.

    As in, I'm not invited?

  • James13/07/2009 at 21:22

    As in, I'm not invited?

Sidepodparty while Mr C goes to Spain? :D

  • me13/07/2009 at 21:22

    As in, I'm not invited?

as in, we'd find a nice hotel with fast internet and you can relay events to the comments from the sanctuary of the indoors.

  • me13/07/2009 at 21:22

Sidepodparty while Mr C goes to Spain? :D

    or that.

  • Nick13/07/2009 at 21:23

    Can you speak spanish?

    Or do they speak Catalan?

  • me13/07/2009 at 21:24

    Can you speak spanish?

    no, why?

  • Andy Taylor13/07/2009 at 21:24

Sidepodparty while Mr C goes to Spain? :D

Inaugural meeting of the let's make fun of Mr C because he left Christine behind to go and meet some crazy people.

  • RG13/07/2009 at 21:24

    Or do they speak Catalan?

They speak of this Alonso. I can say that for certain.

  • Jon Waldock13/07/2009 at 21:24

    no, why?

    google translators?

  • Nick13/07/2009 at 21:25

    no, why?

Its in spain... the crazy people will be...

Never mind.. The atmosphere should be Great! :D

  • me13/07/2009 at 21:26

Never mind.. The atmosphere should be Great! :D

  • Pat W13/07/2009 at 21:35

Just looking at Lou's photos (I missed the shoutout yesterday, wasn't here). Great stuff! I had no idea you were so close to JB in the Merc stand, unless that's a zoom?

  • Andy Taylor13/07/2009 at 21:35

    Last night on Tower Bridge

I prefer the Cesar's Palace thing.

  • Lukeh13/07/2009 at 21:37

Apparently I took a few goodwood videos myself... I don't remember. Just found a load of my sd card.

  • lou13/07/2009 at 21:37

Thanks :) it was with a zoom.. but we were close yeah :) we were closer in other parts of the day.

  • lou13/07/2009 at 21:38

you took some of the jenson interview didn't you?

  • Lukeh13/07/2009 at 21:39

you took some of the jenson interview didn't you?

I did! But you can't hear so well and me and chris need to shut up whilst jenson is talking ;)

it's not bad quality actually, you can hear him quite well but not amazing. Plus it's 300mb quicktime video. eep.

  • Pat W13/07/2009 at 21:40

But have a listen to this...

That came past me at speed when I was stood by the bridge, I was amazed!

  • Nick13/07/2009 at 21:43

That came past me at speed when I was stood by the bridge, I was amazed!

Loeb was amazed by it, he got out his car and walked over.

  • me13/07/2009 at 21:44

Loeb was amazed by it, he got out his car and walked over.

i don't understand why it's making that noise?

  • Lukeh13/07/2009 at 21:45

I'll upload this vid of the red bull, toyota, mclaren and ferrari's all starting up alongside each other to the most wonderfully awesome (looooooooooooooud) noise :)

  • Nick13/07/2009 at 21:45

i don't understand why it's making that noise?

It has a helicopter engine! I love it!

  • Pat W13/07/2009 at 21:45

Thanks :) it was with a zoom.. but we were close yeah :) we were closer in other parts of the day.

I think we must have passed each other twice - once at Mercedes and once at the broken down Ferrari. I'd noticed that in Lukeh's pics but I've just crossreferenced our positions based on tree locations, and the Bonhams banner, in a photo you took and a photo I took.

    Can you see yourself?

  • Pat W13/07/2009 at 21:46

I will say in my defence, my photo was taken very hurriedly, so the quality is terrible...

  • me13/07/2009 at 21:46

We are probably down by the hay but in front of that guy in the white clapppingso you can't see as I remember making lots of inane comments about the loudspeaker :D

Looking through old transcripts. Episode 62, about April last year. Fave convo

Mrs C: I’m rooting for Davidson to become a commentator.

Mr C: Yes, did a good job, but it’s a bit early for him maybe.

Mrs C: He probably wouldn’t like it just yet.

    Uh hu.

    how........?

It's been done quite a few times - you just run a drive shaft direct to the differential - no gearbox required but plenty of turbo lag!

  • Nick13/07/2009 at 21:49

    how........?

Its here on wikipedia.. Apparently wasn't the success they hoped.

I was looking for you too! I was on the way back down the hill at that point, didn't stay long otherwise I'd have been by the hay, but I wanted to get to the paddock one last time.

  • Lukeh13/07/2009 at 21:49

I don't that's the case at all. You just sometimes planned your whereabouts to be where his abouts were, and other times bumped into him.

Eddie Irvine looking at you in that photo must have been a bit scary. He scares me. Allan McNish gave me a strange look.

  • Nick13/07/2009 at 22:00

Oh dear.. I appear to have taken a lot of video of Loeb.

The lack of '98 and '99 cars is no surprise because they were bloody awful.

they have a ~10 min. launch window per day

  • Steven Roy13/07/2009 at 22:42

    Can they go later?

There are no other windows today. It will either be a 24 hour or 48 hour delay.

  • Nick13/07/2009 at 22:42

they have a ~10 min. launch window per day

They should move it all to alaska

  • Steven Roy13/07/2009 at 22:43

they have a ~10 min. launch window per day

They have to launch into the orbital path of the space station so they only have one shot per day approximately and the window is only ever 5 minutes.

  • me13/07/2009 at 22:43

That's an Apple song called Move it.

    are you sure?

  • Steven Roy13/07/2009 at 22:44

Too much gravity there and its a bit cold. It is more efficient to launch nearer the equator.

What about somewhere like colorado or New mexico.

The weather near the equator is clearly not suited to hosting a space programme...

A newly restored iphone should have no music on it at all.

  • Paul13/07/2009 at 22:47

Um. could be. It was some band I asked if they were pod safe and someone said they had released some stuff for that.

  • Scott Woodwiss13/07/2009 at 22:47

The ones at work restored by the engineers and us in the repair centre get a load of garageband songs put on and a Apple sound check track.

  • Scott Woodwiss13/07/2009 at 22:48

But all iPhones get flashed at least twice - once when they come in, then once when we get them if that's the fault and again before being quality assessed.

  • Steven Roy13/07/2009 at 22:49

What about somewhere like colorado or New mexico.

There is a commercial spaceport being set up in New Mexico. Part of the problem is that they need to be able to drop solid rocket boosters, external fuel tanks and the lower stages of he shuttle replacement vehicle in the see. The SRBs get jettisoned after about two minutes so they need to be well out to see in that time. So you need something close to the east coast.

  • guille230613/07/2009 at 22:51

Yeah, i guess thats a problem, but if they can direct the flight of a smart bomb why not a can of fuel?

There is masses of free space around the 4 corners states, and not that much to miss.

  • Steven Roy13/07/2009 at 22:53

NASA also said that the launch window is ten minutes and that the launch time published is not the opening of the window but the ideal launch time. So there is the possibility to go 5 minutes either siade of that.

  • Andy Taylor13/07/2009 at 22:53

Yeah, i guess thats a problem, but if they can direct the flight of a smart bomb why not a can of fuel?

If they make the discarded bits steerabl that adds weight and any added weight is a big issue as you need to add many times that weight in fuel to launch it.

  • Paul13/07/2009 at 22:54

Come on it was only one test, you didnt even lose it! I'm sure you guys will bounce back ;)

Couldnt they just controll it via small motos in the chute ropes?

I am sure they have thought of all this though. Just seems silly to have so many smart people put something together they cant use because its raining...

  • guille230613/07/2009 at 22:57

There is actually a company that tries to launch from a sea platform (a re-converted petrol platform that they can move around). Until now they had something like three failed attempts (including an on-site explosion). But the idea is there, at least for small rockets.

  • guille230613/07/2009 at 22:57

  • Scott Woodwiss13/07/2009 at 22:57

I had a rather interesting visualisation on the way home from work. While listening to Knights of Cydonia on my iPhone, I had playing in my head a scenario where it was the championship deciding race in Brazil and I was in a Williams and Lukeh was in a Brawn. I got pole with Lukeh alongside me, led the first few laps, then had a spin, had to pass Amy in the McLaren, Alianora in the Force India, R.G (who was rather reluctant) in the Toyota and then Lou in the other Brawn to get back to 2nd. I then passed Lukeh at the second round of stops and we battled for the remaining laps, passing and repassing before a virtual dead heat at the line, with me getting the win and the title by 0.001 seconds. I then got back to the pits, stood on top of my car and celebrated, did a back flip off it, celebrated with my crew and friends from work since I'd invited them down as my car was sponsored by Anovo, then went on the podium.

I have these often when listening to music I like. It's quite cool actually :D

  • Paul13/07/2009 at 22:58

That's mad! Brilliant but mad :P

I love having music visualisations. I can picture so well what I would do with music and formula 1 videos but the problem is getting the clips and media with ease, otherwise I'd make a ridiculous amount of stuff probably.

  • Steven Roy13/07/2009 at 23:00

I am sure they have thought of all this though. Just seems silly to have so many smart people put something together they cant use because its raining...

I wonder if they considered the weather when they went to Florida i the first place. Of course safety wan't a huge proirity then.

  • guille230613/07/2009 at 23:00

I am sure they have thought of all this though. Just seems silly to have so many smart people put something together they cant use because its raining...

The problem is not only the direction, they have to survive the lading. In the sea, you can hit the water harder than you would be able in the ground (or conversely, you need stronger and heavier things if they're going to hit the ground)

  • Steven Roy13/07/2009 at 23:00

Same here! I've recently been having visualisations of videos to make on Forza 3 involving a white Gallardo and a black Audi R8 set to Michael Jackson.

I think me and Lukeh have some issues... :D

Surely there are enough islands around. I know it would be a pain to transport all the equipment, but an island is better than a platform.

  • Scott Woodwiss13/07/2009 at 23:10

They are possible in many racing games without the chavvy drifting stuff.

Drifting is not chavvy at all. It's the best expression of car control. Those who can do it well i.e. the Japanese turn it into an art form.

Heck, it must be the 2nd national sport behind baseball! The D1 Grand Prix is massive in Japan. Thanks to that, it's spread to America and Europe very quickly.

  • Nick13/07/2009 at 23:11

Drifting is not chavvy at all. It's the best expression of car control. Those who can do it well i.e. the Japanese turn it into an art form.

    Drifting is fake

They are possible in many racing games without the chavvy drifting stuff.

Heck, it must be the 2nd national sport behind baseball! The D1 Grand Prix is massive in Japan. Thanks to that, it's spread to America and Europe very quickly.

Seems to me the people interested are the people who lower their rubbish 2-door hatch and black out the windows, and putt those utterly stupid looking blue/purple lights all over their cars.

    What sort of lab?

Physics lab. The kind of labs that don't let yo go until 1AM in the long days... :-)

  • Andy Taylor13/07/2009 at 23:13

One of the Apollos (12?) was actually hit as it launched

Apollo 12 experienced a direct hit shortly after lift-off which shut down the entire spacecraft's systems. Luckily they tried turning it off and back on again and everything worked fine.

A lot of those can be moved too...

    Ah is it fun?

Or is it more: electron 1 vs proton 2 ...fight!

  • Pat W13/07/2009 at 23:15

Oh ***. I never did make that cup of tea.

  • me13/07/2009 at 23:15

Hey Mr C, check this out, some pretty amazing looking web galleries built on Snow Leopard

am confused, that says webkit/safari. it'll work on windows too then?

    In the good days, yes.

    In the bad, nop.

  • Lukeh13/07/2009 at 23:16

GAH! Who on earth decided with Vista it was sensible to take out the 'type' sort by option when right clicking in windows explorer? Really annoying having to put it back in every single freakin' time.

Hell who on earth decided Vista was sensible. Grr.

  • Paul13/07/2009 at 23:18

Hell who on earth decided Vista was sensible. Grr.

I hate the UI changes they made in Vista. Making it "easier" for most people has made it so hard for power users. Win 7 is better, but still has those stupid changes

  • Scott Woodwiss13/07/2009 at 23:18

    Drifting is fake

I have to disagree. There's a LOT more skill involved than just turning the wheel full opposite lock and flooring it.

  • Andy Taylor13/07/2009 at 23:18

Sounds like something out of a James Bond film.

    Wouldn't that be shark propelled?

  • Steven Roy13/07/2009 at 23:20

Everyone who was part of the decision to put Vista on the market should be shot at least.

I dunno, but it looks pretty amazing.

  • Lukeh13/07/2009 at 23:21

I suppose I better get some rest before this silly c++ resit tomorrow. Bleh.

    night all!

I dunno, but it looks pretty amazing.

you can technically already do it with this:

    http://www.cooliris.com/

and then browsing the sidepoddrop. but natively is cool. i'd imagine it would work for leopard too though.

  • Steven Roy13/07/2009 at 23:23

I have to disagree. There's a LOT more skill involved than just turning the wheel full opposite lock and flooring it.

It takes a lot more skill to keep it in line and go through a corner absolutely as fast as the car can go or to slide it through a corner on the loose in a rally where you have to slide but only by the bare minimum.

Drifting is just designed to make drivers look as though they are doing something extraordinary when they are nowhere near the level of F1 or WRC drivers.

It is like comparing wrestling with boxing or martial arts.

Right been through my goodwood stuff

I am down to 91 video clips, 21 narrations which i may or may not use and 3 useless videos of jenson.

    This will take some editing!

I have never watched astronauts getting out of the shuttle at the pad before. I wonder why not.

  • Nick13/07/2009 at 23:34

    91!! Nice work

I cut out about 30 which were bad, of nothing, out of focus or out of frame.

  • Andy Taylor13/07/2009 at 23:36

I have never watched astronauts getting out of the shuttle at the pad before. I wonder why not.

That's because they usually get out at the runway.

  • Steven Roy13/07/2009 at 23:41

Thanks Andy. Now I understand. This crew must have got out at the pad a couple of times by now

I think this should wait for tomorrow...

    I must say, given their pace, and the RBR pace, i’m surprised both Brawns were not changed to a two stop. {Comment #25}

To be fair, the Brawns were having trouble getting the soft to work for even 12 laps. By the time they realised how bad their problem was, they were looking at a pair of 23-lap stints on medium tyres. It would have been a little risky, but manageable.
