Qualifying day, and if you're anything like us, this is the best day of the weekend. We're very much looking forward to watching the battle for pole position, and hope you'll join us when the live commenting threads appear. Here are some of the other topics we're talking about:
- So, why has Geoff Willis left Red Bull? They say his position was no longer there, redundant, if you will. Is he heading to another team? Is he just unable to hang on to a job for any reasonable length of time? What exactly is going on with all these movers and shakers in the paddock?
- Will this really be Bourdais' last weekend? He says not, naturally, but the rumours are circling, and there's even talk that his wife might have accidentally mentioned something somewhen. Even though I am in the Le Seb fan camp, I kinda hope this is true. It's about time we had some mid-season driver changes.
- What is all this about Force India and their motorhome? We already know that Jake Humphrey off the good ol' Beeb was struggling with the doors, but now there are money issues to go with those doors? It seems odd that the bailiffs would turn up at a racetrack, but I suppose at least you know the team will definitely be around.
That'll do it for now. As ever, let us know what you're up to, if you're watching qualifying and the race, and who you tip to do well. I'll see you in the comments.
Who would you give a star too?
Apparently Murray Walker has one in the most bizarre place: The Birmingham Walk Of Stars!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birmingham_Walk_of_Stars
Who knew?
Big day, its the first day of the Speedway World Cup. Oooooh.
And some f1 stuff as well.
Any person from Newcastle who has won something. Man it will be a short walk (Ba Doom Shhh).
I've just read Steven Fry's latest tweet .. here's the link he posted (shortened the URL for decency) http://tinyurl.com/cq9n4
i've just noticed my first driving lesson is on a thursday... *gulp* should be fun! :D
So you are being allowed to learn then?
yep! thank god! it's only been 8 months :s but as exams and stuff are basically over, and as i rang the driving instructor and then told dad this evening all is well :D
excellent
damn i just remembered i missed the bbc five live show this evening! grrr
anyway time to get some sleep before school tomorrow (gah!!!) i'll be around after i come home and have watched quali. have fun tomorrow everyone! night!x
night
nighty night lou. try and have some fun at the awards thingy
And I just miss Lou again. Funny
Just updating the blog and realised I posted the same vid twice. Oops.
Friday press conferences are usually a bit hit and miss.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/76850
I loved this one (NERD!)
That's stunning. I love Sam Michael's description of what happened after FOTA walked out.
Just a collective thought, thinking outloud before i go to bed.
If PQ gets replaced and his replacement dosen't do any better job than he has....can we all collectively laugh at Renault, in a big HAHAHA esq way
We collectively laugh at Alonso for insisting on second rate team-mates, just as we did with Schumichael.
With the exception of Rubens of course. Mostly.
I honestly don't think PQ is as bad as he's made out to be, he's just very much second fiddle, trying out stuff for 'nando.
PQ =PK? ;)
I think he is a decent driver...he does get laughed at but i think that more him being under such poor management at renault.
I really want to see him at another team.
ah yes.
it was the same with Heikki, he was completely useless for the most part at Renault
#sorryamy
He tweeted me... This makes him one of the best drivers of his generation
afternoon all
Morning :)
I slept through all of the morning ;)
you're up early!
Work! Still in bed, just easing myself into getting up..... Give myself about 10 minutes
I woke up about 5 minutes ago in a total panic. I didn't set an alarm. Thank god I woke up.
Hi Amy!
Three and a bit hours of work left, an hour and forty five mins of travelling, and then I'll be home alone. Zoe's night out with the girls means she misses qualy. We have OneHD now. Silly girl!
working on a Saturday? Painful! Does your OneHD take the Sydney broadcast times? I see they're not showing qualy up there until 1.15am!
Every Sunday and Monday off! It's awesome.
I can't believe I finally get OneHD. And they put AFL on. Boo!
I was shocked that down in Melbourne the AFL only delays qualy for 30 minutes. Hard to believe it could be worse up there! Or are the Swans playing?
We are getting the same game as you. Anything but live is unacceptable!
Morning, everyone. :)
'ello
'evenin'
Oh no... monin' got confused for a second ;)
5.30pm, who wants to cook me dinner?
I'd be happy to, but I think you might be quite hungry by the time it arrives.
hmmm guess I'd better cook my own steak then :D
Morning all.
I was going to invite you over earlier but that would get me into trouble. Porterhouse steaks tonight if you're interested. We seem to eat the same meal on the same days quite often going by your comments here. Freaky
Morning :)
So today we have free practice 3, qualifying, and then from four I'm being dragged to the pub. So this morning I'm being a swot and getting my show notes for the parade lap written!
Seems like we've got a lot of material :)
Doesn't Amy live like on the other side of Australia to you?
I'd quite like 13 hours of my life back, I got invested in Harper's Island, but turns out I guessed in the first episode who the killer was. Boo.
Morning everyone, my first post on here!
Can't wait for quali, was explaining to my dad yesterday that it's much better than the actual race!
That is good, because as usual we have done nothing :)
Hi Janine! Thanks for coming along!
Did you manage to convince your dad?
Yay welcome :)
Good-diddly-morning, I feel to happy this morning and energetic.
*Waves* How are ya?
That's good... If I'm the host I better have got my shownotes together :)
Now I have to decide who is going to get the Our Song
Not yet, but I'm gonna force him to watch quali today :)
Very well thank you, yourself?
Can I just add yesterday at work experience I was listening to sidepodcast, which thankfully is getting me through the boring hours of work experience, so thank you!
about 1000 kilometres south of me. I work near the airport so we could meet there after her 75 minute flight. Piece of cake really...
I'm scared!
Oooh, we like to be helpful. What are you doing?
Just fine. Nice to see ya around these parts.
Ahhh Sidepodcast is there nothing you can't do :)
Learning about AutoCAD 0_o
btw just checking, is this account really sidepodcast? http://twitter.com/sidepodcast
That is the male half of sidepodcast. I am http://twitter.com/mrschristine. He stole the good name! :)
hehehe *follows*
Have you designed a F1 Championship winning F1 car? Or do they hold that back for week 2?
does anyone else have weeeeeeeeeird commentary on their livetiming page?
I wish! Unfortunately I don't have a week 2 as I'm going to do a 3 day residential course at Imperial College for Engineering which should be fun!
Oooh, yes. It's the written equivalent of our "testing 1-2"
I'm really nice. Honest! A bit henpecked (shhh!) and overly sugared but harmless. I do talk a lot though...
We need an Aussie meet. I messed up the one with Scott when he was home from Italy because of Xmas traffic and illness. Canberra seems a reasonable middle ground?
I like the 'slow slow slow' at the bottom :D
Isn't that just bashing the keyboard?
Pff Canberra. Australian GP 2010 or bust.
Ah Imperial College. We had a SidePodMeetup very near there not that long ago. I used to live down the road. It's my old stomping ground.
Maybe they are fed up with F1 too? Head meets desk?
I can do better
yu8787y
Don't think I'll do that again, my head hurts.
Article from Motorsport Magazine about Irvine's drive in Gilles' Ferrari
Tell him to get @misterc and then you can share @sidepodcast
I think he does own @mrchristine but I don't know what we'd put on @sidepodcast so I just let him have it.
Interesting article. I am surprised anyone from Motor Sport would mix up Schumacher and Senna though. It's not like the incident isn't well known.
Why did senna punch him?
SPC would stay as it is, updates of commenting and podcasts and general F1 stuff. But he needs to use the 'random stuff' account too, everyone should have one.
who can explain http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/rain-visor-jpg to me?
Ooooh an actual 'White Visor'!
I assume its something to do with the electronic rain visory system, but why does that label appear to have been drawn by a child?
Does someone need a white visor?
The top one must be a label. But I can't explain the drawing in the middle between the lightning bolts.
Isnt it De Seb's?
They showed some of his art on the walls of the energy station too earlier
Right.. tea, toast, le Tour
Something to do with tear-offs maybe?
From the comments during the week and the fact it is now a trending topic on Twitter, I take it Torchwood is worth watching?
Silly season really is Go, isn't it; The BBC's mole is now trying to peddle Kimi to Brawn.
Also, Loeb really is interested at a drive with STR - wouldn't you at least set your sights on a decent team?!
If you want a proper silly season story that works. Toyota are going to hire Kimi so they can make the same mistake they made with Ralf, and so Alonso has room at Ferrari.
Well that's the most Mole-like post he's done so far!
In that there was actually something in there you hadn't already read? ;p
Indeed. And that it wasn't just repeating the news!
Why did senna punch him? {Comment #74}
Eddie, in his debut race, had been too busy fighting Damon Hill to make space for Senna (who was attempting to lap the pair of them). Furthermore, when Hill blocked Senna for much the same reason, Irvine unlapped himself. Then Irvine used his famous brand of verbal diplomacy in the post-race "discussion" in the Jordan motorhome. It got up Senna's nose, so he punched Irvine's. Unfortuantely for him, the incident got reported to the press...
I wish Andrew would write the GP.com Mole articles more often like he used to, i really miss them
:P
It's a protective cover to stop the visor being scratched or marked.
Oh yes
It looks like someone has decided to chuck every theory he could think of into that article so that on the off chance that one of them works out he can claim you saw it here first
OK everybody head back to the daily!
yes sir
Q3 about to start on my TV. Only 10 minutes until I find out if my host explodes.
sidepodspace update
10 hours till launch and still no issues apart from the weather which is still only 40%. Looks like we are going to get close to the end of the countdown on this one
Already here! ;)
You can tell we've just had quali because i've just had to brush down my laptop from the food
Can he keep a surprise I wonder?
Is this the first pole for Webber?
yes it is
Technically, if you use the doohickey you're omnipresent ;)
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/76853
Apparently Mr Loeb has been playing in the Red Bull simulator
Yep.
Now re-watching the beginning of Quali that I missed because of my brother calling me to make his SofaF1 prediction
nope, he'll fluff it ;)
oh to be in melbourne...
Hope he treats it better than his C4
He dosent have a super licence though?
Yes why do we get continuous football here?
*Stretches out*
Would that not count for say WRC/F1 etc?
I think they film it with the live feed and just broadcast it late. He just failed though because we got the Rob STOP STOP STOP I PUT THE WRONG TYRES ON audio, and he didn't know who it was. How can you not recognise Rob?
"Olivier Quesnel, the head of Citroen Sport, moved to play down talk that Loeb would become a full-time replacement for Bourdais.
"Let me be clear, Sebastien Loeb will not replace Sebastien Bourdais at Toro Rosso, if he is transferred," he said. "Sebastien has expressed a desire to be in F1, and it does not surprise me as it is a dream come true for him. However, we must not dream.""
I think he might too. I am so pleased to see the Brawns up there with the Red Bulls - with the cold + wet conditions I was worried they would not be.
He'd replace Alguersuari or Buemi if either are no good. ;)
What is the point of two different TV channels if they show the same thing?
Isn't one in HD?
Nope, you have to have done a certain amount of km over a certain period
Most broadcasters just uses a ten second delay for bleeping don't they? Clearly, our OneHD commentators need at least 30 mins just in case :P
Supposedly
AFL has to be in HD because its their highest rating sport and the AFL fans complain if its not. But AFL also has to be in SD because not everyone has HD and they complain if they cant see it. Boooo AFL.
Ah right.
Could they be doing some secret straight line testing with him in?
You just have to love Ari.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/76857
Oh :-(
They could, but i'd have thought you'd have to do it on a proper circuit. and Bruntingthorpe dosent count ;)
That's ace.
It just gets better and better, doesn't it?
Let's hope it isn't too good to be true.
Wow - that is quite a statement - he gets my vote (if I had one) straight away.
As I understand the rule anyone with an FIA A license in any discipline automatically qualifies for one in any other discipline. Hence any F1 driver who goes rallying gets seeded as a top driver.
Well he'll never get in, will he!
Max is burning bridges so eventually there will be no return for him - I just hope it is this year.
Ah but i think an F1 superlicence is one above an A licence, and WRC cars are alot slower than F1 cars, so you could go from F1 to WRC easier (From a power/speed perspective) than the other way round
I may have to send many messages to my friends at CAMS (Confederation of Australian Motorsport) to make sure our president votes for Ari.
Someone might need to email the English cricket team and let them know the point is to take wickets.
He has AAA behind him which means he is Nick Craw's candidate. I reckon he will get in.
I thought lowest score wins.
Damn thats where we've been going wrong.
hehe.
yeah, cricket is just like golf ain't it?
Slow, takes all day, and stops if it rains?
only difference is sometimes when its all said and done, theres no winner.
I like ODIs. Tests, not so much.
Nah, golf doesn't stop if it rains
It does if it's hard enough.
I think the licenses are interchangeable. Bear in mind a lot of drivers go from F3 to F1 which is a similar -ish step. Some drivers can go from rally to F1 and be quick straight away like Colin McRae and some like Tommi Makinen stick it straight in the wall because they can't cope. Sorry Amy (he's Finnish)
I think Loeb could cope with F1 but whether he would be good or not is a different matter.
They just put wets on and keep going
The problem is all of these little clubs that Max set up like the Maltese club and so on. I'm sure they'll be worried that the AAA candidate is going to push an agenda of proportional representation in voting which will mean an end to the FIA courting them with freebies.
I'm sure that's why Ari thought to mention in his BBC interview that perhaps it was better that a President from a smaller club like him rather than France or Britain had a turn.
So does F1 if its hard enough...
I know the South African representatives want Max out - they were very vocal about it during spankgate.
Hmm. I thought Australia were meant to be rubbish this time?
Can someone email Lance Armstrong to remind him not to make it look easy?
I think he would be better than Rossi in F1 - just a hunch!
I think Contador might let him know
I happen to know the guy who was head of the Maltese club at the time of the vote of confidence. He is not a Max fan and was utterly disgusted that the RAC were not anti-Max as he wanted them to vote for him by proxy
Loeb in one team and Rossi in another - I'd pay for that!
I would love to see both of them do it although I would miss Rossi in Moto GP
ITV are up to their usual tricks. They are showing the end of today's stage live. First ad break? 7 minutes in, after the latest news and about 2 mins of live stage coverage.
Okay maybe not Malta then but... Does he really think that he should have the same vote as America?
Can't Rossi do both?
I am sure he does not
He could in theory, but he'd be mediocre if he did both - no rest.
we are getting an amazing amount of live covereage. All of todays stage.
Not realistically as he would compromise both championships.
I have no doubt he could do both and walk on water but fitting it all in would be difficult
Greg Rust stayed pretty calm, almost talked through Webbers radio though. The debrief is after the adbreak, I imagine thats when the WOOing will start.
SBS are doing a fantastic job but to watch that channel I have to unplug my PVR and plug my aerial directly into my TV. Can't be bothered, so I never watch it.
Okay... So who is keeping that structure then? If nobody wants it? I mean Malta as I say is probably the wrong example. But is it other smaller clubs or just the president and inertia?
Eurosport has everything live.
It was a joke really. But he's pretty amazing. I would love to hear that somebody was doing it
Apparently in finland, he you foot want to in out in the rain people say 'are you made of sugar?
predictive dictionary fail? :D
How's the drinking going Nick?
He would need to be in Budapest and Donington at the same time. Although he probably could get MotoGP to move the date.
Predictive text fail, sir!
I thought (could be wrong) that Max's power base was little clubs representing many African, Caribbean/Central American and Middle East countries.
It will be interesting to see how much Ari can change.
I wonder if we will see him try an F1 car once he is elected.
was that an iPhone comment? :-)
I think he'd hate F1, it's so restrictive compared to Moto GP
I thought about that and then thought, he couldn't because whichever team he chose to test with would have bias problems.
You are correct
HE'd just have to try out them all :D
Let him out in an old Lotus
I'm gonna start calling Webber "Skully" because I've never seen someone whose skull is so visible under their skin. It scares me.
I mistakenly thought Malta was one of these but Steven was just setting me right
You're not talking rallying are you :-(
... when you talk about stages ...
I was surprised you mentioned Malta - few (if any) European countries sanctioned Max's behaviour during spankgate. Did Max and his backers not make a tour of countries to gain the support?
By the way, this is the first time Webber has beat Vettel all season in qualifying!
oooh One HD are running a competition to win a trip to the Singapore GP. Other Australian-located-people, don't bother entering. I AM WINNING IT.
true! Should have happened last time though
I am sure he is lighter with fuel. If not it is a really great achievement and will improve his confidence. Similarly Rubens will be hyped over being faster than Jenson.
I remembered Malta because, and I may have got this wrong too, it was mentioned in an article on Autosport as being a club so small it only had a yahoo.co.uk e-mail address.
didn't you already win that lottery?
Paul and I were talking about Tour de France stages, if that's what you mean?
I do not believe so Vettel at Silverstone was awesome. Tomorrow it could be very different.
It has been a close run thing each time though. It's not like Vettel has smashed him in the way some other drivers are beating their team mates.
no, the $50 mil isn't mine :( I also get the feeling I didn't win the trip to Singapore that I entered at the Australian GP. Although maybe they haven't drawn that yet, theres no mention of a winner on their website :D
Amy what time will you be revealing the fuel weights to us?
grrrr Kimi getting in the way grrrrrr
last race was 1.56am. Current time: 11.52pm.
holy cow, raining VERY hard in Toronto. I just brought up the official stream for IRL qualifying.
I got my times wrong. Quali is at 7 our time, now is FP3.
but it seems to have been red flagged, no track action
I will sleep the 'wait for weights' away. Goodnight all and thanks for the company yet again.
I don't know if this is visible without signing up. I can't find his comment about the vote of confidence but I think this clearly expresses the views of the former Maltese chairman. His is the third comment. I am sure the other commenters are familiar but I can't think where from
http://www.gpwizard.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=7042.0
...and Alex, I'm still working on that blog post comparing Webber & Vettel's qualifying times. It should be ready soon... ;)
IRL don't like the wet
Eek for the teams in Toronto:
VisionRacing "Wind has taken part of our awning. All hands are trying to hold down the garage tent! Heck of a storm in Toronto!"
Aus Declare for 674! What a score! We are on top in everything today. ;)
It is... Yes I recognise them a bit :)
Ahh, bet you couldn't do that again if you tried.
Mark made too much of a fuss over that - honestly it was in his mind not on the track. It happens with Mark a lot of times and the extent of his criticism of Kimi totally uncalled for (and frankly lacked professionalism).
second test?
Ooooh that sounds really good
We get a huge score but chances are it'll still be a draw... Boo...
I am sure that makes it clear that he is not a fan of the way the FIA is run. His comments at the time of the vote of confidence were a good deal more blunt.
F1 would have done the same. If you remember the MotoGP race at Indy last year, the wind is like that, added to very heavy rain.
GP2 is on shortly for those who can see it. Eurosport.
yeah true
Indeed.
fantastic qualifying although I still cannot get my head around what happened in Q2. A bit gutted for Nico though, wish he did better!
Right I'm off for a while now... See you all later and tomorrow for the parade lap
say ya Alex looking forward to parade lap
See you then!
People made interesting decisions on the tyres
I was gutted that BMW Sauber and Toyota were so awful. Glock's car looked close to being un-driveable and Kubes not much better!
very bad for Toyota at home
what will the link be to the fuel weights?
I always have the same problem in changeable weather. There are drivers who look safe who just disappear and others end up in places that are way better than they ever should be in.
Don't forget your notes
7th through to 10th will be heavy I reckon...
Amy
http://fia.com/en-GB/mediacentre/f1_media/Documents/ger09_weights.pdf
Its sort of home to both teams - being German.
oh true. Duh
Do you not think that changeable weather is simply more of an equaliser. Lewis' first two season were flattered by his car. It is possible that say that if he had Adrian as a team mate Adrian would be also winning races - well wet ones.
I think sometimes if you get a consistent wet track it can equalise but today was just a lottery. It was a case of who was on the right tyre at the right time. Mostly that was down to luck. The only guy who made a noticeably good decision was Barrichello but he still ended up behind Button owing to the quali system.
When he arrived in F1 Hamilton was asked which of the new drivers he rated and he picked Sutil.
Johnson! Bye bye England. :D
Was it such a lottery? Brawns and Red Bulls on the front. Maccas have looked good all weekend. Sutil has also looked strong all weekend. Ferrari in the upper mid field with Felipe slightly faster than Kimi (which is correct if you average the last two seasons). To me I might have expected Rosberg and Alonso higher and obviously no one expected PK to be as high (the only surprise). Toyotas, BMW Saubers and STRs terrible (no different to say Monaco a few weeks back)
Q3 wasn't a lottery. Q2 was.
17-2!
there goes number two
I think any time the weather changes 3 times in a 15 minute session it is a lottery
At this rate we won't get a day 5! ;)
My point is broadly the same people are occupying the first 10 positions if you accept that Macca are looking better than they have been with the exception of PK which probably was a fluke - but lest be generous I think he is driving better of late. Now Bourdais - that is a different matter - he must be in danger of being dropped.
I look at quali as one process. Q3 has to be a lottery if the people who get there do so through luck.
I think the final result is not that different from what could have been expected but I think there was a lot of luck involved in getting there. Heikki is one place behind Lewis but over a second slower. THat isn't normal.
I think that is part of being a good driver - to take advantages when conditions becomes more unpredictable. I know few others agree, but I rate Nick highly - because it is just such circumstances where he does consistently well. I think Adrian might be the same sort of driver. It is not all down to luck!
Afternoon
Drat and double drat
I am not sure what you mean - Heikki is usually more than a second slower or usually at the back of the grid? Could be the circuit suits the Maccas - actually I think that is obvious. It seems the results today were similar to Monaco - which in itself is interesting as they do not seem that similar.
There are drivers who are consistently good in those situatiions and they deserve credit for that but when the sessions are so short there is a lot of luck involved
Sorry. The point I was making was that one second normally costs a lot more than one position in that part of the grid.
Nature of qualifying - a lot of luck even when you had drivers doing a lap without anyone else on the track.
True - it is unusual if you look at the times rather than the places.
I have a finnish birthday card!
oooooooooh hyvää syntymäpäivää ?
Slightly different 2nd word will drop when sober!
I think the licenses are interchangeable. Bear in mind a lot of drivers go from F3 to F1 which is a similar -ish step. Some drivers can go from rally to F1 and be quick straight away like Colin McRae and some like Tommi Makinen stick it straight in the wall because they can’t cope. Sorry Amy (he’s Finnish) {Comment #145}
It's a bit more complicated than that. Testing can theoretically be done by anyone (even if they had no licence from the FIA whatsoever), but racing is another matter entirely.
A Grade A licence is needed to get a Superlicence in normal circumstances. It does not specify what type, so Sebastien's rally licence would be fine - if he has got a Grade A (strictly speaking, it is possible to compete in the WRC with an International Grade R (which is below International Grade C), which surprised me).
The other sticking point is Loeb's total lack of international circuit racing. He hasn't even done a Formula BMW race in the last three years, so he doesn't meet the automatic Superlicence criteria. It would be difficult to persuade the WMSC and Safety Commission combined that Loeb should be granted this particular licence at this point.
By the way, the relevant Appendix was modified on July 2nd. Things may have been different prior to then.
Did he not do some sportscar racing n the past year?
WRC events are complicated by the fact that there are so many classes competing. Most WRC events are part of national championships so you can have someone driving in a 1.0 litre Vauxhall Nova.
I remembered Malta because, and I may have got this wrong too, it was mentioned in an article on Autosport as being a club so small it only had a yahoo.co.uk e-mail address. {Comment #191}
It is very small. So small that Max can afford for it to not like him because he has people like Mohammed bin-Sulyam who'll organise about three dozen Middle Eastern clubs for him...
I thought he did a race or two in French GT
Did he not do some sportscar racing n the past year? {Comment #258}
Good point. That could be taken into consideration. It also proves Loeb must have at least an International Grade B licence. It's not absolute proof though, and I'd be a little wary of guaranteeing the WMSC would approve him.
We should be getting the weights in around 15 minutes then?
sometimes they dont come out til 2.30ish. Shouldn't be too far away though.
Am off now to the cocktail bar... have drop.ioed the pictures I took last time... Any selections?
I'll try and live drop the pictures :)
Does one of them say Blade of Grass or is my eye sight losing it?
To clarify I haven't live commented from this bar before... But I took pictures of the menu last time.
One of them does... Is that your selection.
In that case, yes.
Have made first attempt at exiting house. Have now gone back for an extra cardigan for Katherine.
sold
Do we get video again??
Timo dropping 3 grid positions http://fia.com/en-GB/mediacentre/f1_media/Documents/ger09_document_18.pdf
Seb V fined lots of $$ http://fia.com/en-GB/mediacentre/f1_media/Documents/ger09_document_19.pdf
Something happened but nothing more needs to be done http://fia.com/en-GB/mediacentre/f1_media/Documents/ger09_document_20.pdf (thats a weird one that is)
Starting from the pitlane then
Just remembered there's a new episode of Los Minidrivers :D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uY0umOvhQQc
he's gotten good at that this year :(
Also reminds me, I'd better get back to doing the super season grid. Been a while. This calls for some catch-up blog posts.
Sadly.
It is Red Bull fined, isn't it? Not that it makes any difference.
What happened with Massa and Sutil? I don't remember anything.
I blame the directors. They missed everything else.
Weights are out?
Why is it always the 2 of them running into each other? ;)
correct-a-roo.
not a clue, I don't remember seeing anything on TV. Can't have been that serious if they are punishing no one.
Brawns significantly lighter than Red Bulls - not good.
But here's the biggest surprise:
7 Force India Mercedes Adrian Sutil 678.5
8 Ferrari Felipe Massa 673.5
9 Ferrari Kimi Räikkönen 674.0
10 Renault Nelson Piquet 676.0
Wow.
http://fia.com/en-GB/mediacentre/f1_media/Documents/ger09_document_21.pdf
they're sneaky with a new link this week
Exactly.
Did Nelson Piquet even do a lap? I can't remember.
This'll make Alia jump with glee.
I remember Martin saying they were all out on track, so yes.
Ah yes, impressively, 1 tenth behind Raikkonen. So could be more or less even?
I was suprised they got that close to them in quali three, seems fuel is the reason why. Looks like a Red Bull victory is the cards.
Jenson won't mind so long as it's Webber - and if he can stay ahead of Der Seb.
I don't think he will, Brawn are a lot lighter than Red Bull, at least it means they shouldn't be caught out by those behind them as they get off the line.
We're in for a good race tomorrow.
Am off to bed - night, everyone! :)
See ya sir.
The KERS-running McLarens behind Vettel might also play a part. If Lewis can jump Der Seb, he'd be doing Jenson a big favor. :)
Very true, but rain is going play some part of tommorow race.
The Nurburgring provides some intresting races.
Remember Lewis is light with fuel, but if DeSeb falls behind Kovy it is another matter.
I heart Martin Whitmarsh. Really really heart.
Lewis and Heikki did a fantastic job in extremely difficult circumstances and Heikki’s pace, in particular, was outstanding.
What happened with Massa and Sutil? I don’t remember anything. {Comment #279}
I think one of them thought the other was in the way at some point, but there was no decent TV footage of it, so maybe it was more "he said, he said" than anything anyone could prove objectively.
Anyway, I think it's a general Force India-Ferrari magnetism issue rather than any particular driver - the only combination I haven't seen get in each other's way yet is Fisichella-Raikkonen, and that's probably a matter of time...
I'm just looking at the media kit the FIA provided for this race, some interesting stuff in here such as phone numbers of local hospitals and dentists. Along with general F1 facts and figures.
I did notice they list Hekki's best F1 finishes as being "4th CAN 07, winner HUN 08" despite the fact he was second in Italy last year and finished third in Malaysia last year.
Personally I like Massa's best F1 finish, its listed as being "Vice World Champion 2008" :D
"I don't want you to think I'm over-emotional, but being able to remake Thunderbirds is the most important thing in my life."
Gerry Anderson doesn't like ITV either. He wants to do a CGI remake like they did with Captain Scarlet.
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/tv/a164624/thunderbirds-creator-blasts-itv.html
*waves* hullo
what an AWESOME front row :D just watched qualifying now. Woo!!!!!
It is a great front row - tomorrow will be excellent
I've done my fuel weights, stints and times. It's striking how different the grid would be fuel-corrected - and how light the Brawns are.
Thanks Alianora - it was a good qualifying for Lewis and the Brawns are not in such a strong position. Webber's lap though, was really good.
Good stuff. I didn't realise just how heavy Rosberg was, that's a long first stint.
one for amy:

Hello all, good qualifying, huh?
i hate to side with itv, but maybe he should come up with an original idea?
i kind of like thunderbirds the way it is.
the beeeeeeest!
i said that :)
don't heart me though, you'll get into trouble with da boss.
My only hope is that Sutil runs solidly in the points.
reanult suggest fuel consumption will be 2.36/3 kg per lap, so i'd say your guess is pretty accurate.
I think it sounded cool, a reimagining of it that didn't involve turning the characters into children. Scarlet was just a remake in CGI, this seemed to have different ideas.
But yeah his argument would certainly hold more weight if he'd done something else in the intervening thirty or forty years.
i guess it good that's he's still keen to do something. how come itv have any say, did he sell the rights to them or something?
afternoon all. what a long day at school, but what an amazing qualifying! :D
everyone had a good day?
kaz is staying in the hotel at the track. that makes so much sense. every f1 track needs a hotel.
w-0-0-0-0-t!
loved it.
He must have sold them the rights years ago
i know!!!
that TOTALLY made up for work. How did things go?
He's a little bit excitable... still...
:D just what was needed really wasn't it. shame i forgot to turn my phone off though, as i got a text on the way home that suggested Webber got pole, but tbh it was such a great quali it didn't matter. although Jenson did give me a bit of a scare nearly dropping out in Q2...
i love people who do that. exactly the same thing with lotus. you can't pocket and then bitch about it later.
there was a lot of walking, a lot of listening to speeches and a lot of clapping. so usual founders day/ prize giving stuff.
The article says ITV own the rights so yeah, he probably made a lot on the sale and if he'd wanted more control he ought to have said so at the time!
That's how that awful film got made, ITV let them do it.
haven't seen it. for the best i'm guessing :)
One I shouldn't add to my list?
Yeah, be glad.
remind me again.. who was it the other day that suggested a race boycott? ;)
It's really cool to see the Thunderbirds flying around all the landmarks in London, etc. Well, it's pretty good if you grew up watching the TV show.
For the story... nah. They ruined all the characters you grew up with and turned it into a 'teen redemption' movie where the youngest person was right all along.
we have seen the race yet. am predicting lots of qually discussion on sunday.
but, umm, it were me who suggested boycotting the whole weekend. yes :(
if it rains the race will be awesome! if it doesn't rain then it will be great for Webber too. should be a great race ;)
;)
i missed this interview earlier, so i'm embedding for anyone else who hasn't seen it either (warning, may contain eddie):
Thoughts on Mr Ari?
Ari for FIA President! :P
ooh, thanks good sir.
He made more sense in those 4 minutes than Max in the past few years I thought
i was just about to say that he didn't manage to insult anyone.. which tbh is much better than Max seems to be able to do.
I'm always wondering when EJ will ask a question that makes sense... one day it will happen.
Maybe.
he's already a legend in my eyes, you have to pinch yourself to believe that's him in the rally clip. he's saying the right things, the things people want and need to hear.
i didn't realise todt was actually planning to stand.
ari is also the first person to come out publicly and say "an f1 breakaway is the end of the fia as we know it". strong words.
It's the two sentences merging together that bugs me. Eddie says:
"I'm delighted that Ari here is... I've known him a long time."
So... he's delighted Ari is here? He's delighted that he's known him a long time? What are you talking about man??
don't forget that eddie knows everyone and is solely responsible for f1 even existing today. he's bound to have a hand in the savior of the fia too.
and don't you forget young lady, that sidepodcast has eddie to thank for our very existence. he knew us before we did, and he invented podcasting first.
now bow down before king eddie, m'kay?
Just a thing I'd quickly say, listening to the debriefs streaming through the xbox 360 whilst playing forza 2 is very, very cool.
Sidepod..poscast made me spin off in laughter, so possibly dangerous. :P
how's that work?
Well the debriefs are stored on laptop obviously, and my xbox/laptop are part of the same network, so with a bit of setup and twiddling (microsoft stylee!) you can stream music/pictures/video on your laptop through the xbox.
very, very cool.
how far back are you going?
uuuuummmmm
when it works (it sometimes says nothing is connected when it's streaming, d'oh), it's showing alllll the stuff i've downloaded on my itunes subscription since about november 2008. So I can happily go back and listen to a show whilst cras...racing in the sidepodcar :D
if you get to nurburgring '07, can you remind us what we said? christine swears the race happened last year.
Who knew Will Buxton was a Harold Bishop fan as well?
SHHHHHHHHH. Gah.
:D
who isn't?
Anyone got a blowtorch?
Is this an actual driver on Twitter?
http://twitter.com/karunchandhok
Erm, don't tell Gavin. But I reckon Nicki Pedersen ain't gonna be riding for a little while.
Heheh :-)
You gotta make it look like you're doing it on purpose, just like Buemi did :)
Yeah, GP2. At least I assume he's still in GP2 because I haven't been following it lately.
#
is there a clip of this? I heard about this powerslide but haven't seen it...
I'm trying to watch IndyCar quals from Toronto - the buffering is *horrendous*
Is that a rogue hashtag??
Blame the directors.
If you haven't gathered, they missed everything.
same here :(
I didn't type it! Hastags are invading :(
Was going to try and find it for you on the Beeb, but they don't seem to do a replay of FP3.
What you using? Doohickey?
I'm sure it'll pop up eventually, sounded fantastic from what I read
they stole that idea from itv ;)
Normal doohickey, usually get the evil roguemajiggies on the DD so no idea what hasshy is doing there.
Yes I have decided to give them names.
oh that explains why i've just watched quali again and not seen it..lol
Interesting. We've seen it before, so I'll get Mr C onto it.
Mercedes have five cars in the top seven.
they only have engines in 6 cars.
Just Fisi letting the side down, as usual.
:P
Helloooo
I can't believe I missed that qualifying session.....
For some reason iplayer won't run down this connection, I need to download first which you can't do for the quali.
Had to resort to reading through your thread in the end :D
You were all so excited I'm sorry I missed it.....
That sucks. You should be able to download it now though?
Well... I say that.. I'm having trouble getting Torchwood off it.
I don't think so. Some programmes the download button just never appears. I've asked them about it before and they just say sometimes there's an error on upload (at their end) which means it isn't available for download. They don't bother doing anything about this because well they cba.....
i still am!
talking of which: http://f1bigpicture.com/
webber!!
Anyways, my connection's that bad I'd probably miss the race waiting for it to download!
You're all so excited that noone actually posted the quali result in that thread. I had to kinda piece it together from where you were all talking about how wrong your predictions were :P
My fault, I haven't done the results post yet.
hey
I wasn't complaining. I'm just amused by how obviously excited everyone was
Best bit of the weekend. Always is :)
I've managed to get a replay of Q3. What's happened to Fernando "gives 6 tenths" Alonso.....?
Evening All
Six tenths of spinning maybe?
Hmm, Fisi has been the better racer this year. Sutil sorta falls backwards
Hahaha
didn't he give one of his helmets to Piquet?
Just sayin'......
:D
Good job I have such a poor memory then!
I have setup my own wetpaint page it is currently under development and the first draft of the site will be finished by next weekend
Maybe this how he can get into the race circuits (with alonso's helmet on)!
hehe
Was his head still in it?
(I feel somewhat vindicated for waving my PK flag last week though! You all mocked....)
We still will ;)
Nah, he'll be gone when the European tour finishes.
DId anyone find out what happened between massa and Sutil?
Rubens needs to stop being so awesome and responding to my tweets before I explode of pure glee :D
Had a good day then?
Whats his twitter id thing?
Neither of them mentioned anything in their press quotes.
everyday will be a good day if he keeps replying to me :P
rubarrichello
could it had been the near miss in the pit lane
Oh, see, that's why Twitter is sooooo broken. I follow you but I don't follow Rubens so I don't get to see that you're talking to him, and I would like to see that!
Stupid Twitter. Fix it!
No penalty from the stewards either
they broke it because their system couldn't handle the traffic. the programmers are useless.
Grr. It makes me very mad.
hehe
just a question.. why don't you want to follow Rubens?
I think the two of you just pretend to know each other :D
Do you have all your conversations over the internet?
can i recommend http://identi.ca/ no? okay then.
Well, that's not really the point, but I have too many Twitter accounts to follow as it is without adding in ones I can't actually read.
Yes. Is that not normal?
I heart identica. I just wish other people did too.
Why not? The internet is the future. Soon you will be able to send little pictures with faces to show your emotion, perhaps a little graphic showing happiness or anger or something. One day I envision people buying items through internet-based ways too.
Kinda like how garlic bread is the future, only more functional.
Nobody seems to go on identi.ca these days
is urs lukehmuse
they made a really silly design update. i don't agree with it.
Thats me!
i'm now following u then
aaah alright :) that makes sense, i'm using it as an excuse to learn Portuguese :D i now know that 'abraco' means ' hug' lol
Apparently, if anyone is sticking around, we'll be doing aonther live rehearsal in a bit.
I do. Sadly, I agree with:
yay! :) this evening is getting better and better :)
what time?
The problem is, identi.ca is ugly but functional. Twitter is pretty, has all the people, all the apps, and then they broke it.
In a bit.
does anyone know the lap record for the other german gp track
This day is going wayyy too well. :p
Rubens is talking to the fake f1 drivers... awesome!
what??
oh no... never mind... it was fake rubens... sorry..i'm now so confused. i'm off to get more rose..
I bet tomorrows race will have lots of dnf's and surprice people get in the points.
That'll help!
My words. Fortunately I don't go to the actual pages too often, so 'ugliness' is not a factor for me...
maybe you're right. i'll have some diet coke instead :)
brb switching laptops
Awesome!
*ahem* I mean...
...Awesome!
Okay, have seen everything now.
Wait till you see my predos
I expect so, rain at the 'ring is always crazy
Have to go to clean (ALL) the house. Luck with that, I enjoyed the last one!
Bye, see you tomorrow (if I can get up for the parade lap...)
I haven't been there for ages either (just reading the feed). Since when do they have the context thing?
I am going to try out the F1 app in the race tomorrow from my ipod has anyone used this app yet!
I brought a season pass last week
context thing?
2007 had everything, apart from Timo, loved it personally. Good racing in wet and dry.
During the parade lap tomorrow I am going to try skype out on my netbook and ring in with my race predictions if thats ok with Lukeh
...huh?!
why me? :D
alex is the host, lukeh's the boss? we're losing control...
I was thinking the exact same thing just now?
Your own creation has run amock.
Sorry I meant host Scott, my bad
Hmm, it sounds more like Lukeh is switchboard :)
I'm hosting now?
I mean this: http://identi.ca/conversation/3836331#notice-4021566
now Scott has some kind of control!
*sidepodcast alarm bells ring*
oooh. very interesting.
Have I got the wrong Scott then?
Why do you assume that's a bad thing? :P
You mean either Christine, Mr C or Alex at a stretch. They're in charge for tomorrow's PL.
You mean I don't have to go into my secret Sidepodcast safe protection room?
Oops, I shouldve said more about everyone else now running the shows it seems!
ALEX then Sooooo many names, I have forgot who was hosting!! lol
The only people we know isn't hosting is Mr and Mrs C
Eurgh why am I always ill when I don't have to work....
Is that ok with ALEX or Mr C or Christine then
lol
Christine, what is on your list for the live stream
Mr C is testing, testing, but is saying 2-3-4 rather than 1-2-3. It doesn't quite sound right.
Anyone there!!
Hello!!
Here is F1 Minute for y'all to pass the time (well, 60 seconds anyway).
http://www.f1minute.com/2009/07/11/11-jul-09-webber-takes-first-ever-f1-pole-position/
Yay, he reached 4!
If we listen to the past 5 shows, that would mean we waste 300 seconds
is it in the itunes feed
Good to see your maths is going well at school :)
Waste???
I know, took me a little while to figure it out, but was easy in the end.
Err, um. Ah, ahhh *runs*
Buuuuuuuuuuusted
Go have a look :)
my itunes says no!
:)
i will kill you chris. very slowly.
just sayin'
give it a while and then im sure it'll be there, if not, go to the site Christine said and you can listen to it there
Mr C, what have you got store for us tonight in the live stream?
'Killing me softly with his words, killing me softly'
hehe
i tested the mics in the hall the other day by saying 1- 2-3-4 and got told off for saying 4 and was given a really long winded explanation for the reasons you don't say 4... cause apparently you dont need to say it. lol i just stared blankly :D
good joke not funny
lol
tell me more?
its a rehearsal so i suppose they will be rehearsing new and exciting things :)
kl
and possibly messing up a lot.
Gah, I'm making this hole bigger.
was just about to say.
2 words...
Naughty
Step
you gunna need to order a search party!!
:)
today is a dress rehearsal for tomorrow. so hopefully solved all of last weekends issues.
Well, technically, I'm already there.
What is your ETA?
in a bit.
Presumably 9:27spt
Time for some Michael Mcintyre awesomeness whilst we wait :)
what time does he finish?
in other words how long is a piece of string
Em, doesn't start till 9:40
jon richardson is on it tonight!! :D
oh.
sidepodtime
which channel
*shakes fist at random BBC time change of 10 minutes later*
10:25 apparently..
apparently its something like in the words 'one, two, three' you use the most commonly used sounds so it's easier to check for balance... or something... i'll look it up, i was shocked when the guy picked me up on it.
See, all that would've made me want to do is go up and test it by going 'Four, four, four, four...'
news to me, but i like the sound of it.
haha :)
Oh no! Don't encourage him! I like 4!
apparently after 'three' you repeat sounds, so there is no need to say 'four' cause you're repeating sounds you've already checked.
oh sorry...
Whoever decided this should've just jumped straight to 11
Evening world
Evening Steven
evening :) good day?
Evening
Live stream soon
I assume someone has mentioned that the shuttle launch has been postponed till tomorrow night due to 11 lightning strikes at the launch site. Te only things that were hit were the water tower and the lightning conductors. Apparently they have to run a load of checks because the lightning conductors were hit by lightning. I kinda thought that the whole point of them was that they would be hit by lightning.
Yes, that person was you, 30 seconds ago
Good. Are we getting another rehearsal? This is just going to raise our expectations for the show.
Rehearsal
Normally Christine finds out and posts before me if I am not around
Hi.
A thread for you: http://www.sidepodcast.com/2009/07/11/live-more-rehearsals/
This guy on MacIntyre's show is better than I thought he would be :-)
Not sure about Jo Caulfield but you gotta like anyone who comes on to Sound and Vision by Bowie.
