Qualifying day, and if you're anything like us, this is the best day of the weekend. We're very much looking forward to watching the battle for pole position, and hope you'll join us when the live commenting threads appear. Here are some of the other topics we're talking about:

  • So, why has Geoff Willis left Red Bull? They say his position was no longer there, redundant, if you will. Is he heading to another team? Is he just unable to hang on to a job for any reasonable length of time? What exactly is going on with all these movers and shakers in the paddock?
  • Will this really be Bourdais' last weekend? He says not, naturally, but the rumours are circling, and there's even talk that his wife might have accidentally mentioned something somewhen. Even though I am in the Le Seb fan camp, I kinda hope this is true. It's about time we had some mid-season driver changes.
  • What is all this about Force India and their motorhome? We already know that Jake Humphrey off the good ol' Beeb was struggling with the doors, but now there are money issues to go with those doors? It seems odd that the bailiffs would turn up at a racetrack, but I suppose at least you know the team will definitely be around.

That'll do it for now. As ever, let us know what you're up to, if you're watching qualifying and the race, and who you tip to do well. I'll see you in the comments.

Just a collective thought, thinking outloud before i go to bed.

If PQ gets replaced and his replacement dosen't do any better job than he has....can we all collectively laugh at Renault, in a big HAHAHA esq way

We collectively laugh at Alonso for insisting on second rate team-mates, just as we did with Schumichael.

  • Pat W11/07/2009 at 00:18

With the exception of Rubens of course. Mostly.

I honestly don't think PQ is as bad as he's made out to be, he's just very much second fiddle, trying out stuff for 'nando.

    PQ =PK? ;)

I think he is a decent driver...he does get laughed at but i think that more him being under such poor management at renault.

I really want to see him at another team.

    ah yes.

it was the same with Heikki, he was completely useless for the most part at Renault

    Hi Amy!

Three and a bit hours of work left, an hour and forty five mins of travelling, and then I'll be home alone. Zoe's night out with the girls means she misses qualy. We have OneHD now. Silly girl!

working on a Saturday? Painful! Does your OneHD take the Sydney broadcast times? I see they're not showing qualy up there until 1.15am!

I was shocked that down in Melbourne the AFL only delays qualy for 30 minutes. Hard to believe it could be worse up there! Or are the Swans playing?

So today we have free practice 3, qualifying, and then from four I'm being dragged to the pub. So this morning I'm being a swot and getting my show notes for the parade lap written!

I wish! Unfortunately I don't have a week 2 as I'm going to do a 3 day residential course at Imperial College for Engineering which should be fun!

  • Christine11/07/2009 at 08:30

I'm really nice. Honest! A bit henpecked (shhh!) and overly sugared but harmless. I do talk a lot though...

We need an Aussie meet. I messed up the one with Scott when he was home from Italy because of Xmas traffic and illness. Canberra seems a reasonable middle ground?

Article from Motorsport Magazine about Irvine's drive in Gilles' Ferrari

Interesting article. I am surprised anyone from Motor Sport would mix up Schumacher and Senna though. It's not like the incident isn't well known.

Silly season really is Go, isn't it; The BBC's mole is now trying to peddle Kimi to Brawn.

If you want a proper silly season story that works. Toyota are going to hire Kimi so they can make the same mistake they made with Ralf, and so Alonso has room at Ferrari.

  • Alianora La Canta11/07/2009 at 10:53

    Why did senna punch him? {Comment #74}

Eddie, in his debut race, had been too busy fighting Damon Hill to make space for Senna (who was attempting to lap the pair of them). Furthermore, when Hill blocked Senna for much the same reason, Irvine unlapped himself. Then Irvine used his famous brand of verbal diplomacy in the post-race "discussion" in the Jordan motorhome. It got up Senna's nose, so he punched Irvine's. Unfortuantely for him, the incident got reported to the press...

  • Nick11/07/2009 at 10:57

Indeed. And that it wasn't just repeating the news!

I wish Andrew would write the GP.com Mole articles more often like he used to, i really miss them

Can he keep a surprise I wonder?

I think they film it with the live feed and just broadcast it late. He just failed though because we got the Rob STOP STOP STOP I PUT THE WRONG TYRES ON audio, and he didn't know who it was. How can you not recognise Rob?

  • Jon Waldock11/07/2009 at 13:25

"Olivier Quesnel, the head of Citroen Sport, moved to play down talk that Loeb would become a full-time replacement for Bourdais.

"Let me be clear, Sebastien Loeb will not replace Sebastien Bourdais at Toro Rosso, if he is transferred," he said. "Sebastien has expressed a desire to be in F1, and it does not surprise me as it is a dream come true for him. However, we must not dream.""

  • Rich11/07/2009 at 13:25

Is this the first pole for Webber?

    nope, he'll fluff it ;)

I think he might too. I am so pleased to see the Brawns up there with the Red Bulls - with the cold + wet conditions I was worried they would not be.

  • Journeyer11/07/2009 at 13:26

He'd replace Alguersuari or Buemi if either are no good. ;)

What is the point of two different TV channels if they show the same thing?

  • Journeyer11/07/2009 at 13:26

What is the point of two different TV channels if they show the same thing?

    Isn't one in HD?

  • Jon Waldock11/07/2009 at 13:26

Would that not count for say WRC/F1 etc?

Nope, you have to have done a certain amount of km over a certain period

  • Jeremy11/07/2009 at 13:26

I think they film it with the live feed and just broadcast it late. He just failed though...

Most broadcasters just uses a ten second delay for bleeping don't they? Clearly, our OneHD commentators need at least 30 mins just in case :P

  • Paul11/07/2009 at 13:26

    Isn't one in HD?

    Supposedly

  • Amy11/07/2009 at 13:27

What is the point of two different TV channels if they show the same thing?

AFL has to be in HD because its their highest rating sport and the AFL fans complain if its not. But AFL also has to be in SD because not everyone has HD and they complain if they cant see it. Boooo AFL.

  • RG11/07/2009 at 13:27

Nope, you have to have done a certain amount of km over a certain period

    Ah right.

Could they be doing some secret straight line testing with him in?

  • Steven Roy11/07/2009 at 13:27

You just have to love Ari.

Vatanen also said that the first thing he would do if he is made president would be to change the voting procedure – and remove the 'cabinet' systems that forces presidential candidates to put forward a 22-man team of officials.

"Of course that system has been made to protect the incumbent president, and if I got there one day, then that would be the first thing I would change – so people could get rid of me easier than what is possible now.

They could, but i'd have thought you'd have to do it on a proper circuit. and Bruntingthorpe dosent count ;)

    That's ace.

Wow - that is quite a statement - he gets my vote (if I had one) straight away.

  • Steven Roy11/07/2009 at 13:28

He dosent have a super licence though?

As I understand the rule anyone with an FIA A license in any discipline automatically qualifies for one in any other discipline. Hence any F1 driver who goes rallying gets seeded as a top driver.

  • Paul11/07/2009 at 13:29

"Of course that system has been made to protect the incumbent president, and if I got there one day, then that would be the first thing I would change – so people could get rid of me easier than what is possible now.

  • Rich11/07/2009 at 13:30

Max is burning bridges so eventually there will be no return for him - I just hope it is this year.

As I understand the rule anyone with an FIA A license in any discipline automatically qualifies for one in any other discipline. Hence any F1 driver who goes rallying gets seeded as a top driver.

Ah but i think an F1 superlicence is one above an A licence, and WRC cars are alot slower than F1 cars, so you could go from F1 to WRC easier (From a power/speed perspective) than the other way round

  • Jeremy11/07/2009 at 13:30

You just have to love Ari.

I may have to send many messages to my friends at CAMS (Confederation of Australian Motorsport) to make sure our president votes for Ari.

  • Paul11/07/2009 at 13:30

Someone might need to email the English cricket team and let them know the point is to take wickets.

  • Steven Roy11/07/2009 at 13:31

He has AAA behind him which means he is Nick Craw's candidate. I reckon he will get in.

Slow, takes all day, and stops if it rains?

only difference is sometimes when its all said and done, theres no winner.

I like ODIs. Tests, not so much.

  • RG11/07/2009 at 13:33

Slow, takes all day, and stops if it rains?

Nah, golf doesn't stop if it rains

  • Journeyer11/07/2009 at 13:33

Nah, golf doesn't stop if it rains

It does if it's hard enough.

  • Steven Roy11/07/2009 at 13:34

Ah but i think an F1 superlicence is one above an A licence, and WRC cars are alot slower than F1 cars, so you could go from F1 to WRC easier (From a power/speed perspective) than the other way round

I think the licenses are interchangeable. Bear in mind a lot of drivers go from F3 to F1 which is a similar -ish step. Some drivers can go from rally to F1 and be quick straight away like Colin McRae and some like Tommi Makinen stick it straight in the wall because they can't cope. Sorry Amy (he's Finnish)

I think Loeb could cope with F1 but whether he would be good or not is a different matter.

  • Jon Waldock11/07/2009 at 13:34

Nah, golf doesn't stop if it rains

They just put wets on and keep going

  • Alex Andronov11/07/2009 at 13:34

He has AAA behind him which means he is Nick Craw's candidate. I reckon he will get in.

The problem is all of these little clubs that Max set up like the Maltese club and so on. I'm sure they'll be worried that the AAA candidate is going to push an agenda of proportional representation in voting which will mean an end to the FIA courting them with freebies.

I'm sure that's why Ari thought to mention in his BBC interview that perhaps it was better that a President from a smaller club like him rather than France or Britain had a turn.

  • RG11/07/2009 at 13:34

It does if it's hard enough.

So does F1 if its hard enough...

  • Rich11/07/2009 at 13:34

I may have to send many messages to my friends at CAMS (Confederation of Australian Motorsport) to make sure our president votes for Ari.

I know the South African representatives want Max out - they were very vocal about it during spankgate.

  • Pat W11/07/2009 at 13:35

  • Rich11/07/2009 at 13:35

I think he would be better than Rossi in F1 - just a hunch!

I happen to know the guy who was head of the Maltese club at the time of the vote of confidence. He is not a Max fan and was utterly disgusted that the RAC were not anti-Max as he wanted them to vote for him by proxy

  • Alex Andronov11/07/2009 at 13:38

I am sure he does not

we are getting an amazing amount of live covereage. All of todays stage.

  • Rich11/07/2009 at 13:39

    Can't Rossi do both?

Not realistically as he would compromise both championships.

  • Steven Roy11/07/2009 at 13:39

    Can't Rossi do both?

I have no doubt he could do both and walk on water but fitting it all in would be difficult

  • Amy11/07/2009 at 13:39

Greg Rust stayed pretty calm, almost talked through Webbers radio though. The debrief is after the adbreak, I imagine thats when the WOOing will start.

  • Amy11/07/2009 at 13:40

SBS are doing a fantastic job but to watch that channel I have to unplug my PVR and plug my aerial directly into my TV. Can't be bothered, so I never watch it.

  • Alex Andronov11/07/2009 at 13:40

Okay... So who is keeping that structure then? If nobody wants it? I mean Malta as I say is probably the wrong example. But is it other smaller clubs or just the president and inertia?

I wonder if we will see him try an F1 car once he is elected.

I was surprised you mentioned Malta - few (if any) European countries sanctioned Max's behaviour during spankgate. Did Max and his backers not make a tour of countries to gain the support?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)11/07/2009 at 13:48

I am sure he is lighter with fuel. If not it is a really great achievement and will improve his confidence. Similarly Rubens will be hyped over being faster than Jenson.

  • Alex Andronov11/07/2009 at 13:50

It has been a close run thing each time though. It's not like Vettel has smashed him in the way some other drivers are beating their team mates.

  • Amy11/07/2009 at 13:51

didn't you already win that lottery?

no, the $50 mil isn't mine :( I also get the feeling I didn't win the trip to Singapore that I entered at the Australian GP. Although maybe they haven't drawn that yet, theres no mention of a winner on their website :D

  • Alex Andronov11/07/2009 at 13:51

Mark made too much of a fuss over that - honestly it was in his mind not on the track. It happens with Mark a lot of times and the extent of his criticism of Kimi totally uncalled for (and frankly lacked professionalism).

I am sure that makes it clear that he is not a fan of the way the FIA is run. His comments at the time of the vote of confidence were a good deal more blunt.

  • Pat W11/07/2009 at 13:59

Do you not think that changeable weather is simply more of an equaliser. Lewis' first two season were flattered by his car. It is possible that say that if he had Adrian as a team mate Adrian would be also winning races - well wet ones.

  • Steven Roy11/07/2009 at 14:21

I think sometimes if you get a consistent wet track it can equalise but today was just a lottery. It was a case of who was on the right tyre at the right time. Mostly that was down to luck. The only guy who made a noticeably good decision was Barrichello but he still ended up behind Button owing to the quali system.

When he arrived in F1 Hamilton was asked which of the new drivers he rated and he picked Sutil.

Was it such a lottery? Brawns and Red Bulls on the front. Maccas have looked good all weekend. Sutil has also looked strong all weekend. Ferrari in the upper mid field with Felipe slightly faster than Kimi (which is correct if you average the last two seasons). To me I might have expected Rosberg and Alonso higher and obviously no one expected PK to be as high (the only surprise). Toyotas, BMW Saubers and STRs terrible (no different to say Monaco a few weeks back)

    Q3 wasn't a lottery. Q2 was.

My point is broadly the same people are occupying the first 10 positions if you accept that Macca are looking better than they have been with the exception of PK which probably was a fluke - but lest be generous I think he is driving better of late. Now Bourdais - that is a different matter - he must be in danger of being dropped.

  • Steven Roy11/07/2009 at 14:35

    Q3 wasn't a lottery. Q2 was.

I look at quali as one process. Q3 has to be a lottery if the people who get there do so through luck.

I think the final result is not that different from what could have been expected but I think there was a lot of luck involved in getting there. Heikki is one place behind Lewis but over a second slower. THat isn't normal.

  • Rich11/07/2009 at 14:37

I think that is part of being a good driver - to take advantages when conditions becomes more unpredictable. I know few others agree, but I rate Nick highly - because it is just such circumstances where he does consistently well. I think Adrian might be the same sort of driver. It is not all down to luck!

I am not sure what you mean - Heikki is usually more than a second slower or usually at the back of the grid? Could be the circuit suits the Maccas - actually I think that is obvious. It seems the results today were similar to Monaco - which in itself is interesting as they do not seem that similar.

Sorry. The point I was making was that one second normally costs a lot more than one position in that part of the grid.

Nature of qualifying - a lot of luck even when you had drivers doing a lap without anyone else on the track.

  • Alianora La Canta11/07/2009 at 15:25

    I think the licenses are interchangeable. Bear in mind a lot of drivers go from F3 to F1 which is a similar -ish step. Some drivers can go from rally to F1 and be quick straight away like Colin McRae and some like Tommi Makinen stick it straight in the wall because they can’t cope. Sorry Amy (he’s Finnish) {Comment #145}

It's a bit more complicated than that. Testing can theoretically be done by anyone (even if they had no licence from the FIA whatsoever), but racing is another matter entirely.

A Grade A licence is needed to get a Superlicence in normal circumstances. It does not specify what type, so Sebastien's rally licence would be fine - if he has got a Grade A (strictly speaking, it is possible to compete in the WRC with an International Grade R (which is below International Grade C), which surprised me).

The other sticking point is Loeb's total lack of international circuit racing. He hasn't even done a Formula BMW race in the last three years, so he doesn't meet the automatic Superlicence criteria. It would be difficult to persuade the WMSC and Safety Commission combined that Loeb should be granted this particular licence at this point.

By the way, the relevant Appendix was modified on July 2nd. Things may have been different prior to then.

  • Steven Roy11/07/2009 at 15:27

Did he not do some sportscar racing n the past year?

  • Steven Roy11/07/2009 at 15:29

WRC events are complicated by the fact that there are so many classes competing. Most WRC events are part of national championships so you can have someone driving in a 1.0 litre Vauxhall Nova.

Good point. That could be taken into consideration. It also proves Loeb must have at least an International Grade B licence. It's not absolute proof though, and I'd be a little wary of guaranteeing the WMSC would approve him.

I think one of them thought the other was in the way at some point, but there was no decent TV footage of it, so maybe it was more "he said, he said" than anything anyone could prove objectively.

Anyway, I think it's a general Force India-Ferrari magnetism issue rather than any particular driver - the only combination I haven't seen get in each other's way yet is Fisichella-Raikkonen, and that's probably a matter of time...

  • James11/07/2009 at 16:44

I'm just looking at the media kit the FIA provided for this race, some interesting stuff in here such as phone numbers of local hospitals and dentists. Along with general F1 facts and figures.

I did notice they list Hekki's best F1 finishes as being "4th CAN 07, winner HUN 08" despite the fact he was second in Italy last year and finished third in Malaysia last year.

Personally I like Massa's best F1 finish, its listed as being "Vice World Champion 2008" :D

I think it sounded cool, a reimagining of it that didn't involve turning the characters into children. Scarlet was just a remake in CGI, this seemed to have different ideas.

But yeah his argument would certainly hold more weight if he'd done something else in the intervening thirty or forty years.

afternoon all. what a long day at school, but what an amazing qualifying! :D

    w-0-0-0-0-t!

  • Pat W11/07/2009 at 17:46

i guess it good that's he's still keen to do something. how come itv have any say, did he sell the rights to them or something?

He must have sold them the rights years ago

He's a little bit excitable... still...

  • lou11/07/2009 at 17:46

    loved it.

:D just what was needed really wasn't it. shame i forgot to turn my phone off though, as i got a text on the way home that suggested Webber got pole, but tbh it was such a great quali it didn't matter. although Jenson did give me a bit of a scare nearly dropping out in Q2...

  • me11/07/2009 at 17:47

i love people who do that. exactly the same thing with lotus. you can't pocket and then bitch about it later.

  • lou11/07/2009 at 17:47

that TOTALLY made up for work. How did things go?

there was a lot of walking, a lot of listening to speeches and a lot of clapping. so usual founders day/ prize giving stuff.

  • Pat W11/07/2009 at 17:50

i love people who do that. exactly the same thing with lotus. you can't pocket and then bitch about it later.

The article says ITV own the rights so yeah, he probably made a lot on the sale and if he'd wanted more control he ought to have said so at the time!

That's how that awful film got made, ITV let them do it.

  • me11/07/2009 at 17:53

remind me again.. who was it the other day that suggested a race boycott? ;)

  • Pat W11/07/2009 at 17:57

One I shouldn't add to my list?

It's really cool to see the Thunderbirds flying around all the landmarks in London, etc. Well, it's pretty good if you grew up watching the TV show.

For the story... nah. They ruined all the characters you grew up with and turned it into a 'teen redemption' movie where the youngest person was right all along.

  • me11/07/2009 at 17:58

remind me again.. who was it the other day that suggested a race boycott? ;)

we have seen the race yet. am predicting lots of qually discussion on sunday.

but, umm, it were me who suggested boycotting the whole weekend. yes :(

  • lou11/07/2009 at 17:59

we have seen the race yet. am predicting lots of qually discussion on sunday.

if it rains the race will be awesome! if it doesn't rain then it will be great for Webber too. should be a great race ;)

i was just about to say that he didn't manage to insult anyone.. which tbh is much better than Max seems to be able to do.

  • Lukeh11/07/2009 at 18:09

I'm always wondering when EJ will ask a question that makes sense... one day it will happen.

    Maybe.

  • me11/07/2009 at 18:11

    Thoughts on Mr Ari?

he's already a legend in my eyes, you have to pinch yourself to believe that's him in the rally clip. he's saying the right things, the things people want and need to hear.

i didn't realise todt was actually planning to stand.

ari is also the first person to come out publicly and say "an f1 breakaway is the end of the fia as we know it". strong words.

  • Christine11/07/2009 at 18:13

I'm always wondering when EJ will ask a question that makes sense... one day it will happen.

It's the two sentences merging together that bugs me. Eddie says:

"I'm delighted that Ari here is... I've known him a long time."

So... he's delighted Ari is here? He's delighted that he's known him a long time? What are you talking about man??

  • me11/07/2009 at 18:15

So... he's delighted Ari is here? He's delighted that he's known him a long time? What are you talking about man??

don't forget that eddie knows everyone and is solely responsible for f1 even existing today. he's bound to have a hand in the savior of the fia too.

and don't you forget young lady, that sidepodcast has eddie to thank for our very existence. he knew us before we did, and he invented podcasting first.

now bow down before king eddie, m'kay?

  • Lukeh11/07/2009 at 18:17

Just a thing I'd quickly say, listening to the debriefs streaming through the xbox 360 whilst playing forza 2 is very, very cool.

  • Lukeh11/07/2009 at 18:19

    how's that work?

Well the debriefs are stored on laptop obviously, and my xbox/laptop are part of the same network, so with a bit of setup and twiddling (microsoft stylee!) you can stream music/pictures/video on your laptop through the xbox.

  • me11/07/2009 at 18:24

when it works (it sometimes says nothing is connected when it's streaming, d'oh), it's showing alllll the stuff i've downloaded on my itunes subscription since about november 2008. So I can happily go back and listen to a show whilst cras...racing in the sidepodcar :D

I don't think so. Some programmes the download button just never appears. I've asked them about it before and they just say sometimes there's an error on upload (at their end) which means it isn't available for download. They don't bother doing anything about this because well they cba.....

My words. Fortunately I don't go to the actual pages too often, so 'ugliness' is not a factor for me...

  • lou11/07/2009 at 19:46

    That'll help!

maybe you're right. i'll have some diet coke instead :)

I assume someone has mentioned that the shuttle launch has been postponed till tomorrow night due to 11 lightning strikes at the launch site. Te only things that were hit were the water tower and the lightning conductors. Apparently they have to run a load of checks because the lightning conductors were hit by lightning. I kinda thought that the whole point of them was that they would be hit by lightning.
