It's a super busy day today, as testing continues in Jerez, Lotus are due to launch in London, Kimi gets some rallying action, and... well, it's Friday! It's been a subdued test so far with weather, and little running from Virgin Racing, but perhaps things will perk up today. Elsewhere:

  • Talking of rallying, we got some Fantasy WRC scores from the special stage yesterday, and it looks as though Mr C is last in the league. Haha! I shouldn't laugh really, as I didn't even know we'd set up a league, but at least I'm not last. If you're keen to get involved, please sign up - don't worry, we don't have a clue what we're doing either.
  • Scott has been working at the Classic Team Lotus factory for a while now, and has seen some exciting people come and go. Yesterday, he posted a picture of himself with Kovalainen, which is just fabulous. What is up with Kovi's hair though?
  • Lukeh has started a new feature on his F1 blog, in which he poses a topic, discusses whether it is a good idea or not and then asks for your opinion - Yay or Nay. The first one is about Silverstone's new layout - what do you think?

That should keep us going for a bit. I have a feeling we'll have a few threads up during the day, so I will see you in the comments.

mildly amusing stat of the day. according to wefollow.com, sidepodcast is supposedly the most influential f1 person on twitter... uh-huh.

one can only presume that breaking doohickey and having everyone tweet instead, has artificially bumped the stats.

She forced Danny into creating the WRC competition before she would agree to sign up though. That's unfair. She gave him the option of creating a WRC game or buying her a pony.

This sounds like an interesting story....

    Not really

Born to Irish immigrants in London

I consider myself Irish (Irish ex-pats would call me a 'plastic paddy')

My British passport is purely a travel document in my eyes

When asked, I call myself London Irish

Took me years to work my identity out

My favourite tweet of the day:

I'll do almost anything to lose weight. But exercising and eating properly is where I draw the line.

  • Amy12/02/2010 at 01:50

my flatmate is sad because she is moving to london in may but can only get a 2 year visa so she will have to come back before the olympics start. Guess i wont be going to any events with her ;)

She could end up with sponsorship to stay if she likes it

The Olympic Village is about half an hour from my place

Maybe I should think about going to an event

  • Steven Roy12/02/2010 at 02:04

    Cripes no way!!

Why not? It has been on mine for a long time and it is going to happen. It may take two or three years but it is going to happen

  • Bassano12/02/2010 at 02:07

My boss is having one of those 'red letter-type days' next week

    Driving a Lamborghini around Silverstone

    Officially jealous

Luckily, he is first up in the [cold] morning and will probably spin ;)

  • Bassano12/02/2010 at 02:10

So this is kinda early but I'm taking names for a St Patrick's Day get-together. Last year's was great, mini pies and everything!

  • Steven Roy12/02/2010 at 02:11

Luckily, he is first up in the [cold] morning and will probably spin ;)

The first laps in a frosty track can be pretty unpleasant and I have never done it in anything with the power of a Lamborghini. Hopefully they will send people out in their own road cars and let them run laps. A dozen cars doing 10-15 laps makes a huge difference to the grip.

  • Steven Roy12/02/2010 at 02:12

I haven't done Paddy's day properly since I was in Paris. The Irish bars had 6am licences and work started at 9. Tough day

  • Bassano12/02/2010 at 02:12

I don't think this is that liberal

    Should be great fun though

I'll definitely do a single seater day at some point

  • Amy12/02/2010 at 02:12

no, the tennis at the olympics. Gonna watch roger get that golden slam ;) . Driving an f1 car is so not on my list, i hate going fast. My dad once took me up to 160kmh and i almost had a heart attack

For the record, I've never had a day in Aviation Engineering like this.. at all

The apprentices sure do get a lot of experience on those days... which never happened

  • Steven Roy12/02/2010 at 02:16

I don't think this is that liberal

Most of these places don't like people taking their own cars out without an instructor. I went through the racing school at Aintree and they were very relaxed about it once they knew you were sensible. I did the 28th and 29th of December there one year and the track was white so everyone with a car was sent out to bang in laps to try and make the surface black. I was always of the opinion that no way would I push it in my own car in a track but once you have done a few laps it gets a little competitive

  • Steven Roy12/02/2010 at 02:17

Speed is very different when you are driving. It feels much slower. My mother didn't pass her test until she was in her fifties and if I went over 50 mph she got wound up. A few weeks after passing her test she was quite happily driving at 70

  • Steven Roy12/02/2010 at 02:18

You mean, we're driving to Belgium... slowly? :)

    Is that allowed?

  • Amy12/02/2010 at 02:18

Sort of. Unless you're a market trader. Then we shut you in jail for using imperial units :P

  • Steven Roy12/02/2010 at 02:24

Astronauts should not have English accents. It's just not right. It sounds like cheap sci fi

A Twitpic from the International Space Station, of Manilla

  • Steven Roy12/02/2010 at 02:50

  • Steven Roy12/02/2010 at 02:55

    Oooooooh coolio!

There are a stack of them. NASA has a twitter account that shows the tweets of all astronuats where you can find all the twitpics. They are all I think by the Japanese astronaut Astro_Soichi

He is With JAXA the Japanese space agency. All the astronauts wear a flag on their uniforms that show which agency they are with. The guy doing the spacewalk now who was born in England has a US falg so he is NASA and not ESA. I assumed he moved to America a long time ago but just kept his accent.

They will struggle to get any gradient in there because the whole area is flat and there are two runways in the middle of the track and this section goes very close to them. Pilots would not be happy to find a big lump on the middle of the runway

That is because he pulled in close to $2million last year. A couple of months ago he announced that he was not going to take a salary any more but only live on the donations people made so that he would only get what he was worth. The first month after he said that donations went from the regular $9000 per month to $20000

Can I just say - it seems Kimi has already smiled more in the past 2 weeks than he's smiled in the last 2 years.

No surprise there at all... ;)

Poor Webber though. A German legend's comeback is a bigger pull than an Aussie's maiden win.

In an interview with Olivier Quesnel (Citroen team manager), it seems there's a lot of F1 drivers who's interested to try a rally car. And not just Vettel and Kubica.

The interviewer mentioned Hamilton wants to try it. Quesnel mentioned Alonso approached him about a prospective run.

Quesnel also mentions he thinks Prodrive will be back, and VW will follow suit...

Prodrive-Mini? Interesting. Will they lure Petter Solberg back?

Don't have a clue who is perhaps lined up, but it's been mooted for the best part of a year and is due to be unveiled next month.

Hence why I was a bit surprised to hear Citroen's rally head-honcho say he reckons Prodrive would be back soon!

    Hi.

we are driving to belgium at or near the legal speed limit :D

Is the limit in Belgium the same as France? That was good - you could do 80mph and not worry about cops with radar guns.

  • Pat W12/02/2010 at 10:24

lets go via anywhere interesting :D i will accept speediness if it is legal. It feels safer somehow.

Since it should only take 3hrs from the tunnel there is time to go to interesting places... perhaps a discussion for nearer the time.

I think so, i remember looking into it at one point last year. It started in its current format when it was bought by a company to promote F1 in the US (i think owned by bernie). I think Joe was just an occasional writer at first then took it over

  • Amy12/02/2010 at 11:32

Guille can explain it better than me, but in a nutshell. ;)

Basically, because of all the legal wrangling, they went back to the original charter, from 1850(?). That charter has so few rules, they're basically allowed to do pretty much anything with their boats. So the boats now are radically different, both to previous boats and to each other.

as far as I'm aware they got sick of waiting for the legal stuff to be sorted out and the Louis Vuitton challenger thingy became a separate series this time around.

yes, LV got sick of it and literally retired because 'didn't like the proposed future' for the Cup, but that was before this Cup settled to a single challenger. The challenger series should be back, with another sponsor, for the next Cup.

    From this morning's rally loop:

Kimi Raikkonen suffered an early delay when Ford's Khalid Al Qassimi rejoined right in front of him following an excursion on SS2. The Finn was stuck in Al Qassimi's snow spray for the rest of the stage, and is currently 11th, just over two minutes behind Loeb.

  • Journeyer12/02/2010 at 13:23

I don't understand why WRC doesn't get any live TV coverage.

While IRC does? I think it's because the stages are so large, a TV company would need to spend significantly for live TV coverage (like Eurosport does for IRC).

  • Danny12/02/2010 at 13:23

I don't understand why WRC doesn't get any live TV coverage.

I say that as I've been off work for the last few days, and would have loved to sit down in front of the TV watching the action unfold. However, coverage doesn't start until Sunday evening.

    A good point, well made.

Show everything all of the time?

  • Kathi12/02/2010 at 13:30

Show everything all of the time?

They have a helicopter camera, but that can only show one car at a time.

I don't know much about broadcasting techniques but I guess it's difficult when the stages are in the middle of nowhere and often hundreds of kilometres away from the service park.

Finnish TV will show one stage live on Sunday. I can't check at the moment if it's a superspecial or a normal stage.

  • Danny12/02/2010 at 13:30

    joe mentions it too: http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2010/02/12/michelin-to-get-the-last-laugh/

they're talking, and they mentioned it to the press, so they're interested and just pressuring the FIA into giving them what they want. but given that it seems to be leaning towards green initiatives, it shouldn't be too difficult for fellow Frenchman Todt to say "Oui."

odd that suddenly they're not fussed about "competitive" racing., when it suits them.

I had an interview for a Sales Advisor role for Orange in one of their retail shops in Norwich today. I'll know whether I've got the job by Tuesday, but overall I feel the interview went very well and after looking on their Careers and hearing what would be in store if I got the job, I not only really want this job, but I desperately need it. I can't live on JSA for much longer. £100 every 2 weeks only goes so far.

What's the league name though? Some how I've missed this vital bit of info and Raven Island Racing are sitting third overall after yesterday.

erm... It is the one with the most teams in it. If you click join a league then search league names it is something like "you lost me at special stage" but it is the only league that has more than 4 entries

Loeb is way to expensive. Even if he wins everything you can get more points for your money elsewhere.

  • Paul Convery12/02/2010 at 19:53

Loeb is way to expensive. Even if he wins everything you can get more points for your money elsewhere.

Well he is what, six time world champion now? So being expensive is understandable but putting him in your team is really going to limit your options.

  • Steven Roy12/02/2010 at 19:54

Well he is what, six time world champion now? So being expensive is understandable but putting him in your team is really going to limit your options.

If they are crazy enough to race that car there are going to be a huge number of accidents. Drivers are going to stick there nose in a gap and forget that the rear is twice as wide and won't go through the same gap.

who is better out of...Alex Tagliani, Dan Wheldon, and Mario Moraes they all cost the same amount and can't choose between them... I like the name Tagliani though...

Tagliani is very experienced but he's set up a new team for this year. I expect teething troubles.

Dan Wheldon has won the 500 before and is fast in some places but not others and has slipped to a midfield team. The year Danica came 3rd and got loads of media attention at everyone's expense, he wore a t-shirt saying "Actually won the Indy 500".

Mario Moraes is in his 2nd year and has lots of potential.

  • Pat W12/02/2010 at 21:32

he's the champion and he only costs 7 million?? so why are some of the others costing up to 12million?

He won it two or three years ago. Last year Franchitti won it at the last race from his team mate Scott Dixon. Ganassi and Penske are the two top teams

  • Danny12/02/2010 at 21:34

Wheldon's AN IRL champion, not the reigning one ;)

  • lou12/02/2010 at 21:35

So.. my IRL choices (you'll be pleased with my logic here :P)

Dan Wheldon - 7.00m - cause you told me too...

Dario Franchitti - 12.00m - cause he's so expensive he must be good

Marco Andretti - 8.50m - cause i've heard of him before

Mike Conway - 7.00m - because of the whole honda thing...

    Sarah Fisher - 5.50m - cause she's a woman.. but not Danica :)

  • lou12/02/2010 at 21:36

You've got good pricing on the Ganassi/Penske drivers.

I'd potentially move Kanaan up a tad over his teammates. Say by 0.5, they're about as fast as each other but he's got more experience.

Antinucci could be a touch too high but its hard to say. Generally its good as it is and you can easily leave it and not attract complaints.

    Wheldon - Cos he's British

Conway - Cos he's also British

Sato - Cos he's the Takuma Sato

    Power - He seems decent

Ryan Hunter-Reay - Mainly because he is also called Ryan

If I want to unfollow someone because they are becoming increasingly annoying (or rather, never talking about racing and they are on my racing account) yet they Follow Friday me every week without fail, do I unfollow?

I just unfollow. I can't be bothered with the hassle. Sadly I have followed a lot of psychotic Muse fans in the past who literally tweet every minute at least twice (I wish I was joking) and then rage when they get their limit unlocked, then use up the limit again etc... surprises me how many people do so that I've followed in the past.

Personally, I'd unfollow them, then thank them when they put me in their Follow Friday tweets. There's a good chance they won't know they've been unfollowed unless they watch their "followed" tallies very closely. However, if lots of people put you in Follow Fridays (or you don't give other people who Follow Friday you thanks), just unfollow them.

There are sites out there that will track who unfollows you and then email you, much in the same way that you get an email when someone follows you (if you have it turned on) http://twunfollow.com/ is the site i've used, doesn't work if your tweets are protected though.

  • Pat W12/02/2010 at 23:28

There are sites out there that will track who unfollows you and then email you, much in the same way that you get an email when someone follows you (if you have it turned on) http://twunfollow.com/ is the site i've used, doesn't work if your tweets are protected though.

    Why would you want to?

  • Pat W12/02/2010 at 23:28

I'm watching recordings of MotoGP to try and clear my backlog of stuff, and I'm wondering whether to watch the Olympic opening ceremony given it starts at 1.30am

  • lou12/02/2010 at 23:30

    Still got Em's death cold?

yes :( although i thought i was getting a bit better yesterday so i went outside to take pics in the snow. needless to say, it was a bad idea because i've been feeling awful all day.

  • Pat W12/02/2010 at 23:31

Sounds like yours is massively worse than mine. :(

All I can suggest is an early night.

it's not often i get this knotched off my feet due to a bad cold, i usually get a bad sore throat, loose my voice a little and am better within a week.

I would go to bed, but i've just started watching yesterday's episode of skins... :) #iammyonworstenemy

  • lou12/02/2010 at 23:34

Going out in the snow with a death cold is a bad idea

blame my textiles teacher, since our trip was cancelled she suggested going outside :)

Have you got any of those vitamin C tablets you dissolve in a big glass of water?

  • Pat W12/02/2010 at 23:48

@pat your game looks great!! i shall join in next week though as i seem to have missed the cut off.

    Thanks :)

There's time to catch up with good-scoring rounds, although I think next week is NASCAR-only so that'll be pot luck. It'll get interesting when F1 and IRL kick in.

  • Alison12/02/2010 at 23:48

I wonder if the opening ceremony of the Olympics will be toned down after the bloke got killed on his luge

  • RG13/02/2010 at 00:12

I wonder if the opening ceremony of the Olympics will be toned down after the bloke got killed on his luge

I'd imagine it to be. From the tweets of BBC reporters there, very sombre mood.

  • Scott Woodwiss13/02/2010 at 00:13

I wonder if the opening ceremony of the Olympics will be toned down after the bloke got killed on his luge

Not to take anything away from it, but how come events were taking place before the opening ceremony?

  • RG13/02/2010 at 00:14

Not to take anything away from it, but how come events were taking place before the opening ceremony?

It was training, I think everyone has to do at least one training run before they can compete.

  • lou13/02/2010 at 00:14

it happened during training i believe
