Thursdays aren't usually the best, and with the prospect of some wet testing sessions ahead, perhaps it will be one of those days! However, we'll try and stay positive, and talk about some fun things instead.

  • We've been talking about the genius behind F1Photos.org for a while now, but it really is time to check out his Flickr account, if you haven't already. There are some superb photos there, uploaded directly from the circuit. Just try and ignore the Renault ones, as they just highlight how hideous the livery is.
  • After much consternation over the past few days regarding the possibility of teams skipping races, and perhaps choosing where they don't bother turning up, the FIA have spoken out to try and clear things up. They point out missing races is against the agreement the teams have signed up to. Phew!
  • Joe has confirmed that there will be An Evening With... event in Melbourne, as requested on the blog over the past few weeks. Tickets are available now, and if you are going to be in Melbourne for the race, you know you want to go.
  • Adie has taken up the Thursday Thoughts baton this week with a really good question. I'll be giving it some thought and posting an answer later today, and I hope you'll do the same. If you have a blog, get publishing, if not, you know you can send us a guest post at any time. Also, don't forget to sign up to lead the way on one of the last few weeks of Thursday Thoughts.

That should do it for now. Let us know how your week is going, and I'll see you in the comments.

I know Mr C was thinking later in the year but I'm still good for March [or other]

We may need to call it a reconnaisance mission! ;)

What's Mar 14th - 21st week like for you guys? [not all of it, obviously]

  • Bassano11/02/2010 at 00:39

    Hello all

    Hi Joe

Has everyone recovered from Superbowl fever now?

  • Joe in Fla11/02/2010 at 00:40

Has everyone recovered from Superbowl fever now?

Yeah, that was cured by the obligatory hang over

  • Alison11/02/2010 at 00:40

What's Mar 14th - 21st week like for you guys? [not all of it, obviously]

Yeah that's grand for me. It doesn't make a difference when in the week for me. I'm good to choose my own days off so whenever yeah.

  • Bassano11/02/2010 at 00:42

Yeah, that was cured by the obligatory hang over

    :)

Good game, I haven't watched the SB for years. I really enjoyed it

The past three SB's have been great and I loved the 2002 Super Bowl when Tampa Bay killed the Raiders. The NFL has a good thing going.

Yeah that's grand for me. It doesn't make a difference when in the week for me. I'm good to choose my own days off so whenever yeah.

I may be in Hong Kong the weekend before so towards the end of the week would be better for me, probably

  • Alison11/02/2010 at 00:45

    We'll see what Steven says

Coooool. I could do with going away again. I can't be doing with work since I've been on holiday. It seems extra dull! Even worse than before....

Oh errrr I don't think I'm going to take it #confidential

    Doesn't feel like it!

  • Bassano11/02/2010 at 00:47

    Doesn't feel like it!

    Yeah, that happens

    Life gets in the way

  • Bassano11/02/2010 at 00:49

    Hahahaha you what?

It's a friends birthday and a few of us have flights we haven't used

We may do HK for a long weekend

I've not been since they handed it back, I'm curious to see how it's changed in the last 14 years

  • Alison11/02/2010 at 00:50

    Yeah, that happens

I've had a proper rough time since I've been back though. My deputy let the place get in such a state in 10 days that she's been dismissed. Now I'm short staffed. It's a bit of a nightmare. I don't think they'd let me leave the country again if it was up to them.....

I really fancy a change. It would have been a new job at the end of March (depending on pregnancy) but I don't want to commit to that really. I might go away for a few months. I'm going back to uni September next year.

  • Jon Waldock11/02/2010 at 00:51

  • Alison11/02/2010 at 00:54

Yup I'm interviewing next week. I'm hoping it goes better than last time. I need to recruit a viable replacement for myself really and someone else as well.

More like a tiny kind of place? It's just a studio. There's no way in heck I could share that kind of space. Not after living by myself!

    Do Aussies celebrate Shrove Tuesday?

Although, if you're to follow Finnish tradition next week:

Finns also share the Swedish tradition of eating marzipan and cream-filled pastry, although they often replace marzipan with strawberry jam

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shrove_Tuesday

  • Amy11/02/2010 at 03:24

not celebrate as such, you only occasionally hear it mentioned. I dont even know when it is. I just know back in dunedin they have a pancake flipping race in the city

  • Amy11/02/2010 at 03:25

ooh i can be down with jam and cream. Hate marzipan though.

Of note, it says that they will let di Resta do some FP1s this season.

I got to have a 60 second chat to Ross Noble! He came in to where I am working today. I told him I have tickets to his show in May and (after a bit more conversation) asked if I could tell Zoe that he wished her a Happy Birthday for Tuesday and he laughed and said "of course"

Yay for Ross Noble being nice.

    Back to work now :-)

So one is the VW-Ecclestone-Carabante package. Another has to be the Stefanovic package. What's the third one, though?

  • Will11/02/2010 at 09:20

So one is the VW-Ecclestone-Carabante package. Another has to be the Stefanovic package. What's the third one, though?

    The Tony Teixeira rescue package?

Senna, Schumacher, no Prost. Why is he so under rated?!

I was thinking he was a 2010 inductee. Guess not...

    Maybe next year?

Prost is underrated because even if he won 4 titles, he's not even acclaimed as the best of his era (that's Senna).

Although he's in my Top 5 - just above JYS.

  • paul11/02/2010 at 09:36

Prost is underrated because even if he won 4 titles, he's not even acclaimed as the best of his era (that's Senna).

Pah. according to some. I rate him higher. Higher than Moss too.

A great post from Adie. I agree with a lot that he says, and it brings back a lot of memories. Sneaking into a race track while on holidays. 6 years old with my older brother :D

    Hi.

I got to have a 60 second chat to Ross Noble! He came in to where I am working today. I told him I have tickets to his show in May and (after a bit more conversation) asked if I could tell Zoe that he wished her a Happy Birthday for Tuesday and he laughed and said "of course"

    That's very cool :)

  • Journeyer11/02/2010 at 10:24

    I picked traction.

Given the context, you made the right choice. ;)

we are one of the only 2 schools open in the area. They've got yr 10 and 11 doing lessons they may not all study just so they are kept busy. 6th form art students get to do art/textiles etc but as i was meant to be going on a trip i didn't bring anything with me. I'm having to do the best i can with what we have.. was going to do some photo things in the photo suite.. but i can't get to them.

the binder is pink, which isn't a colour I normally go for but its so preeeetty. And the pen is black. They are both being used to help me plan my trip :D I think I have more fun planning holidays than actually going on them :D

I haven't paid much attention since the launch but if you are following astronauts NASA has a ombined account that shows all the tweets from all the astronauts so you don't have to find them all individually.

I make it a table in Excel and copy it over, even though it loses all formatting..

  • Lukeh11/02/2010 at 14:04

yeah, I can't see an option to do so and it's a bit annoying.

What I plan to do is say, well, in 1950 there were 5 points positions. If there were on average 26 cars in the race, the chances of a car finishing in the points are 5/26 or 19% (not taking car or driver performance into account).

The idea is to test the theory that allowing points down to tenth in 2010 makes for a more or less fair system than the ones used in the past...

In the 50s the system as I understand it was 8-6-4-3-2-1 with a point for either pole or fastest lap which was eventually taken away and given to the winner to make the 9-6-4-3-2-1 system. I have no idea of dates though.

Indeed. So if I divide the number of points paying positions with the average grid size for that year, I can give the system a 'fairness index'...

It should make an interesting post. I guess the other thing worth looking atalthough it will be a lot harder is finisher numbers. Anyone doing all the races in a season in the 50s or 60s was more or less guaranteed a points finish due to the attrition rate where now reliability is so good it is conceivable that we could have ten cars with no points this season.

Hmm, I might have to think about how I do this one then. Perhaps for simplicity I would only focus on number of starters, as there were a lot of no-hopers and one offs too.

Remember I am only looking at how fair the system was, so if you started a race you had X% chance of scoring points...

won by some GP2 drivers who were there to learn the circuit..

  • Christine11/02/2010 at 15:07

I can't believe the whole internet knows about that meme and I had never heard of it

    I haven't either.

  • Pat W11/02/2010 at 15:12

    That's right...

    But can you remember who?

    'cos I can't

  • Steven Roy11/02/2010 at 15:14

Remember I am only looking at how fair the system was, so if you started a race you had X% chance of scoring points...

But surely what is important is the chance you had if you entered because it is at the point of entry you are spending time money and effort. The number who actually start the race is effectively a random number

Youtube are testing out a new layout :)

The new look comes complete with a greater emphasis on the video, “like” and “dislike” buttons (as opposed to the 5 star rating system), information about the video is slotted underneath the video rather than to the right of it, and the entire page is equipped with expand and contract options that help ensure minimal clutter.

    http://thenextweb.com/apps/2010/02/11/youtubes-minimalist/

Personally I like it, you can see it here

Okay, now even I'm finding it tricky to find stuff on the wiki. The structure needs re-imagining somewhat, I think.

can any of the archived stuff be brought into sidepodcast.com? things that'll never change again etc.

Joe also has an edited overhead shot of Silverstone showing what it will look like - best one yet IMO

There are things that are probably not necessary anymore. I updated the Guest Posts page today, but now with our authors separated out, it should be much easier to find them on Sidepodcast anyway.

A new artist has made my top ten all time plays since 2005... Christine!

    1. Flaming Lips

so a conversation happened here at the house yesterday...

Fourstar had popped round to pick up a spare old laptop I had in the loft. His four year old daughter's one had packed in and she wanted a new one... And well you don't really go and buy a new one for a 4 year old! After he left...

K: It's funny that Freyja at 4 has her own laptop...

A: Well that's the way things are these days. I think it's a good idea

K: Yeah of course, what i mean is how come she has one and I don't

A: Ah... You should have said... You could have had that one

    K: I don't want that laptop

    A: Oh

K: Maybe I do need my own iPad

  • me11/02/2010 at 18:30

    K: I don't want that laptop

    A: Oh

K: Maybe I do need my own iPad

    K: I don't want that laptop

    A: Oh

K: Maybe I do need my own iPad

I can see this fitting into other discussions with other people...

    "I don't want a milky bar.

    Oh.

Maybe you should get me an iPad instead"

  • Christine11/02/2010 at 18:33

    3 weeks???

Well I had a very busy February planned. So I finished all of February (except for today's for some reason) in January. I did write almost all of January in December. Having done this for quite a long time I know the way that I work. Some days I just can't be bothered, some days I am fired up and write a couple. So I really need to be ahead so I don't force it when I don't want to. That's the best way to start resenting it.

  • Kathi11/02/2010 at 18:48

    doesn't it start tomorrow?

No, there is one little tiny super special stage tonight.

Those aren't contiguous weeks though quite as... well... the last week of February I will be taking a holiday (from work) to spend a week doing the 3rd draft of my novel. I may well write about that that week day to day.

  • me11/02/2010 at 18:52

Autosport has an article on one of the proposals for new Indy cars from Delta Wing. Although it only uses a 2 liter engine it can do 235 Mph. It will use half the fuel of the present series and each engine will run over 4,000 miles between rebuilds. It also costs half the price of the current Dallara chasis and has half the drag. Just one question will it be half the fun!

There was something of a discussion about it yesterday. It's a curious concept

I actually like it - there is rumour that it was originally a three wheeler - now if it also had the tilt of a Carver it would have been really cool.

It's like the IndyCar one but better! Except its about NASCAR which makes it worse.

Thanks - I keep telling myself this is autoracing and I SHOULD like it but I just cannot get excited about it - it has great ideas like following one driver and it should be so exciting. Curious, very curious.

I just think apply that technology to F1 - that I can actually watch for free in South Africa which has about the worst internet connection in the world - now that is impressive - if only F1 could be as freely accessible and interactive!

F1 should have led the way in this sort of thing

Considering it is not leading the way and certainly from 2010 cannot even claim to have the best drivers just the drivers with the richest daddies and sponsors - to me it is losing appeal.

Since we're talking WRC, where on earth is Petter Solberg?

He might have touched a snowbank softly and spun his car later on.

Which prompted Grönholm to say that he was being careful and tried not to do a Solberg :)

For the second time this week NASA waited until I went out before going ahead with a launch.

The ISS astronuats are on a sleep pattern. For reasons I don't understand they are waking up at 9:14pm UK time. I guess that means only people in Amyland will see the spacewalks since they will probably start at 2am ish ish. The astronauts are preparing for the first one now.

    #confidential

He mustn't know about this but what you do is call him then after two or three rings hang up. He will wake up to answer the phone and see you have called then call you to complain. You tell him you did call but realised what time it was and hung up immediately. Then you can whine to him for hours while saying sorry for waking him.

Yeah she can't act either. But someone must know about F1.They included Kers,Masa's accident and the best part is they hired Antonio Sabato Jr. to play a driver

  • Bassano11/02/2010 at 23:47

That is a good point. That would probably fix everything.... That and an orange drill :P

What a time to walk into the conversation

    Like an Orange PING!

I am amazed they did KERS. I am surprised anyone who is not a fan of the sport has ever heard of it.

  • RG11/02/2010 at 23:48

Must have been a fan writing the episode

  • Andre11/02/2010 at 23:50

I know I was shocked. They gave it another name though but it did the same thing as Kers

  • Pat W11/02/2010 at 23:50

They had Massa's accident? Presumably that's what they were investigating

  • Bassano11/02/2010 at 23:50

    Do you fix doorhandles?

    On occasions

I have a limited radius these days due to the popularity of the aforementioned drill ;)

oo there is a new addition to the Goodwood FOS this year - link

'The Earl of March is proud to announce today (5 February) the introduction of a dedicated ‘Aviation Show’ zone as an integral part of the hugely successful Goodwood Festival of Speed.'

i'm not really into aviation stuff.. i mean i love the read arrows but know little about any of it. should be a nice addition to the festival though.

  • Steven Roy11/02/2010 at 23:51

KERS is a stupid name. It is as if they had a committee and asked them to dream up a dull name

  • Bassano11/02/2010 at 23:52

Bet the onscreen graphics were better than ours :)

Fiiiiine be like that. Luckily aforementioned handle isn't in my house.... She had the decency to destroy my parents' house!

a few of my friends (who don't watch f1) have asked me about it, i've always been a little shocked. Not sure where they would have heard it mentioned :)

I read some tweets today about Williams KERS-type tech with Porsche. Interesting

So do you do Giggles-like technical explanation for them

  • Andre11/02/2010 at 23:54

No Pat,they were talking about all the previous injuries the driver had suffered including a fractured skull and then they showed an animation of him getting hit by a piece of another car except it wasn't a spring.Mac Talyor apparently is a mega fan of the sport

  • Bassano11/02/2010 at 23:54

    :D

Giggles needs to do an audio F1 glossary

  • Steven Roy11/02/2010 at 23:54

hehe i usually get past was it stands for and they loose interest. we should record Giggles explanations and play them at occasions like that though. :)

  • Steven Roy11/02/2010 at 23:55

    Interesting item from Joe

Tony Fernandes has been Twittering this evening, with the curious suggestion that his AirAsia airline could be the title sponsor of the British Grand Prix. It seems that this is the MotoGP event and not the Formula 1 race, which will continue to be sponsored by Santander.

  • Bassano11/02/2010 at 23:56

Doesn't suprise me. Pirates aren't isolated to Somalia and beyond

  • Steven Roy11/02/2010 at 23:56

Giggles needs to do an audio F1 glossary

I would love to hear him explain energy storage and recovery and energy conversion factors

  • RG12/02/2010 at 00:02

It appears it isn't only the F1 Castrol Rankings getting stick, from Henry Winter, Telegraph journalist.

"Leaving Wembley...Capello clearly annoyed by Castrol Rankings that had in-form Rooney only 25th in world. Fab even took issue with compilers"

They can't do anything right can they?

  • Pat W12/02/2010 at 00:02

Castrol are really gaining a lot from this exercise

  • Steven Roy12/02/2010 at 00:05

Fab even took issue with compilers

Someone should tell him the rankings are definitive
