The weekend is here, but there is no respite from the F1 action, as testing continues for a fourth day at Jerez. Well, I say it continues, but so far we have seen most of the running hampered by the weather. I can't imagine today will be much different, but we will keep our eyes peeled. Elsewhere, here are some of the things we're talking about:

  • Lotus launched their new car yesterday in London, and it has caused quite a vast array of opinions regarding the livery, the look of the car, and the general feel of bringing back an old name into the sport. Have your say in the breakout thread, catch up with the details on F1 Minute, and get a closer look over at F1 Big Picture.
  • If you're at a loose end over the weekend, why not have a read of the latest part of my story? Life in the Fast Lane is a ten part piece of fiction, in which you get to control the direction of the story at the end of each part. We're onto the third section now, and you get to make a strategy call for the driver in question.
  • Just as a heads up, I am currently in the middle of reorganising the wiki, which basically entails moving the pages about a lot, merging information so we don't have half empty pages, and deleting a couple of unnecessary pages as well. It was getting in a bit of a mess, and I've made it a lot worse, but I have a plan. You can keep on using it normally, but just be aware you might find things aren't where you left them.

That should do it for now. Giggles has confirmed there won't be a radio show this week, so no live streaming over the weekend, but I will see you in the comments.

I hope Lotus do a better editing job on their next podcast. Not quite sure how the editor missed that.

The interview with Fairuz Fauzy. Ted interviews him and asks him about his feelings. Fauzy starts speaking and says he will know more after the shakedown tomorrow so Ted explains that they are making a podcast and it will not go out until after the shakedown and tells him to keep it more general and not to mention dates. They then re-start the interview and do it properly then no-one edited it out.

    eveeeery day

How many hours do you average, is it sleeping or getting to sleep?

  • startledbunny13/02/2010 at 00:42

    eveeeery day

my wife has trouble sleeping, but she is on some serious medication, and still finds it hard to get to sleep.

  • Alison13/02/2010 at 00:43

I've had bad problems getting to sleep since I was about 12. Once I'm asleep I could stay there all day. I can get by on very little sleep though...

  • Jon Waldock13/02/2010 at 00:44

How many hours do you average, is it sleeping or getting to sleep?

once im down im down but its getting down in the first place.

I was on some really mild sleeping tablets along with lots of other stuff, but i stopped them when they ran out and now i just wait to get to sleep, usually about 2-2.30, i write and do work up until 12ish and then watch west wing or friends until i get sleepy.

    no fun

Yeah, WW is great to fall asleep to with the timer on. Knowing all the stories with hardly any loud, action scenes helps

    I rewatched Series 1 - 7 that way! :)

    Am currently re-doing DS9 now

  • Jon Waldock13/02/2010 at 00:47

Yeah, WW is great to fall asleep to with the timer on. Knowing all the stories with hardly any loud, action scenes helps

i've watched it through a couple of times now, the first time i had to watch it all in order but i can now dip in and out, a bit how friends is normally.

I get up at 7 on Friday but every other day its 8 or later so getting 5+ hours is enough often.

although every day i wake up with what is apparently called "a sleep hangover", huge headache, often dizzy etc etc, exhausted. gone within the hour usually though

This accident was on corner 16. Initial runs suggested corner 13 was a bit dangerous so they made some changes there. Maybe the changes to 13 made 16 a bit too difficult

From what I have seen and heard, from local broadcasters in Canada, is that the whole track is demanding and that the last turn complex at 180-210 degrees, at some 4-4.5G, might be too much.

Ugh, over-scripted, over produced ceremonies. Snowboard in to B.C. Place?

  • Amy13/02/2010 at 02:07

there has been lots of complaints that canada hasnt let other countries get enough time getting used to the course

"Vancouver Organising Committee announces press conference for 1900 GMT Saturday to give update on luge safety investigation"

  • Steven Roy13/02/2010 at 02:14

there has been lots of complaints that canada hasnt let other countries get enough time getting used to the course

All organisers have done that to give their own team an advantage. Not exactly the Olympic committee. The trouble is at the Olympics there are a lot of people who would never qualify for a major championships. Apparently this guy would never get near a world championship.

Very difficult course, minimum practise, under-qualified competitors. You don't need to be an expert to see the problem

  • RG13/02/2010 at 02:15

He competed in 5 events in the World Cup, 55th overall if I remember right.

THe luge competition is supposed to be tomorrow. To me they should postpone it for a few days but no way should they cancel it. It's like motor racing. Anyone who has entered knows the risk and is prepared to take it.

Seems the most logical option. I doubt anything will go ahead until after the safety inspection has been completed.

There are connected issues if you delay an event. The bobsleigh (2 and 4 man) mandate extra time to repair the track, because of the wear that the extra weight puts on the track.

A relatively simple fix is available, a sheilding along the side of the track.

There are bigger issues if they don't delay and someone else gets killed. Even if it is an entirely unrelated accident

There needs to be some sort of modification. Even if they just cover the bars with boarding, or extend the ridge coming out of that corner. Very poor track design.

  • Bert13/02/2010 at 02:32

There are bigger issues if they don't delay and someone else gets killed. Even if it is an entirely unrelated accident

    Unrelated, but predictable/obvious yes.

When I saw video of the accident, the death, I asked myself how could we have missed that.

I am sure there are contingency plans upon plans and this sort of things have been planned for. While effectively meaningless, all local broadcasters have somehow found something black to wear.

Halftime at rally Sweden. Kimi was 8th on this stage, his best result so far. (it was only a tiny stage - 1.8km)

Mikko is still leading but Loeb is catching up. Ogier is still going and holding his position although he lost his spoiler on the first stage this morning. #rally

Today is a bad day so far. Football off because the referee who inspected the pitch a stupid o'clock this morning said there was a hard patch. It seems to be beyond his grasp that several hours later when the game is due to be played the pitch would be fine. Then I find out two people stole my lottery jackpot and got over £50 million each. Unfair!

Still I get to stay in and watch the rugby so hopefully Wales will be gentle with us

Football is ridiculous, every year their is a point where the ground is either too hard, too soft, too sandy or too earthy. they should employ players who are capable of playing on any surface.

Its probably beyond the imagination of most of the players that the majority of people who play football dont even have a grass field

    Its probably beyond their grasp

Trust me, having watched a non-league game where half the pitch was covered in mud, there is times you want it to be called off.

I could see the point if there was a genuine safety issue but it is little more than frost. Modern refs would be stunned if they were put in aa tardis and saw the kind of pitches and conditions people played in when I was your age

  • Amy13/02/2010 at 13:30

Trust me, having watched a non-league game where half the pitch was covered in mud, there is times you want it to be called off.

    There should be 2 criteria:

    1-can the ball roll

    2 can the players run

if both are phisicaly possible then it is possible to play football

  • Christine13/02/2010 at 13:31

Football is ridiculous, every year their is a point where the ground is either too hard, too soft, too sandy or too earthy. they should employ players who are capable of playing on any surface.

This isn't a probelm with the players. This is the officials. We had a game called off last season when both managers and all the players thought the pitch was fine but the ref found a square foot with water on it where the ball wouldn't bounce. Our star unpaid groundsman said he could sort it in 5 minutes with his fork but the ref said he couldn't wait for that despite him being the match ref so he collected his fee and left.

    Oh it started *turns on*

I wasn't expecting to be in today so I'm feeling lost.

  • Lynch13/02/2010 at 14:35

is that the sam collins of race car engineering?

Dont know... i think you mentioned this book a while back.. there is an earlier version of it "Tracks around Europe" or something....

  • Scott Woodwiss13/02/2010 at 14:35

Lotus Cars said they were going to get involved in several racing categories like sportscars etc but I don't remember WSR being mentioned

Well it is Lotus Racing so it's more to do with the new F1 team I think.

Theres another suggestion for the "book store" .... I keep meaning to order it....

that looks good, I'll have to remember that. on a similar note, for Christmas I was given a book about racetracks the public can drive on for free or a small charge. I'll look it up

Lotus has a WSR team as well?

if you buy it, please buy through the new store. we get something like 5% of the cover price, but you pay no extra.

presumably if we buy a copy we give ourselves the 5pc :)

  • Steven Roy13/02/2010 at 14:38

    I laughed at Fourstar's latest tweets :)

    - Oh great, JCB gone into a water main at the top of our road. Lots of men in hi-vis jackets on mobile phones looking into a hole.

Funnily enough I am just looking at that category. That is overpriced.

For anyone who wants to be a racing driver or who wants to start understanding driving there are two books you have to read. The first is Bob Bondurant's who was an American F1 driver in the 60s who had a big accident and set up what may have been the first race driver school in the world. He has personally trained many of the biggest names in American racing over the last few decades and taught many of the actors who drove in the film Grand Prix

The second must read is by some bloke called Stewart who thinks he knows a bit about driving

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Jackie-Stewarts-Principles-Performance-Driving/dp/0905138910/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1266074231&sr=8-4

    remember I did a podcast, and somehow deleted the 1st track. cue a few minutes of silence. didn't notice until a couple of weeks later. {Comment #10}

My favourite blooper was the time when I did a podcast bemoaning Super Aguri's then-recent destruction. I was just about to talk about the last aspect of the problem when the following was recorded:

"Thank you for listening, and... ...er, oh there is one last thing to say... This is a platform alteration. [cut across giggling] The 20:48 Northern service..."

This is one of the downsides of recording the piece at Sheffield Station while waiting for a train. The bit in italics above was the PA system making an announcement, which was of course going to be of no interest whatsoever to people tuning in to listen to F1 stuff. Needless to say, the last thing I was going to say in that podcast did not involve platform alterations.

I almost forgot to edit it out of the main podcast, but it made it onto the internet as an out-take. Imaginatively, (it's called LCMBP - Outtake and can be heard from my NaBloPoMo playlist).

    Football is ridiculous, every year their is a point where the ground is either too hard, too soft, too sandy or too earthy. {Comment #279}

My local team needed four attempts to play one match last month, and then only made it because neither they nor their opponent could play their fixtures due to frozen pitches at their respective opponent's grounds...

A little. I was more on Twitter (and yes I stayed up) chatting with Canadians and Americans I know through IndyCar... and one other Brit who stayed up.. If I had been without that I would've just watched it this afternoon

I've just skipped to the end I am afraid...

The team walkthrough was as boring as ever (apart from the Georgia moment), I did like that they came in first though. The rest was mixed... It was technically very good with the video floor and effects. There was a bit too much dancing/ballet for my taste.. I liked that they told me about Canada's roots.

Aww I care about the Olympics - there's some very cool sports (no pun intended) ... but I don't normally go for the opening ceremonies...

  • Janna13/02/2010 at 17:23

Someone mentioned the Jamaican Bobsled team early this morning. In case people haven't seen it, Cool Runnings is on BBC3 tonight at 9.25pm. Hopefully it will be up on iPlayer afterwards. It really is a must see film, in my opinion.

I'm sure I'll be watching some of it, the wife wants to watch some and show it to the kids. The winter olympics doesn't really grab me. Summer does sometimes, though.

I don't mind watching stuff where people are going insanely fast down an impossibly steep mountain :). The freestyle skiing and snowboarding is kinda cool, too.

Now, if they had bobsleds racing rally cars, I'd be all over that!

There are actually some Brits who aren't half bad at winter sports these days. Especially in the Bobsleigh and Skeleton.

There are actually some Brits who aren't half bad at winter sports these days. Especially in the Bobsleigh and Skeleton.

    That must be achievable?

My wife said to me last night that it annoys her a little bit whenever I make fun of Canada. I was like "Oh, come on, I make fun of the French WAY MORE than I make fun of Canada". "Yeah, that annoys me too"

I think I have to pick another country to pick on. Maybe Uruguay. She can't possibly have any feeling for Uruguay.

    Didn't miss much at least.

  • RubberGoat13/02/2010 at 18:54

    that's new.

Actually no. It happened a lot during F1 coverage last year...

  • Scott Woodwiss13/02/2010 at 18:55

Now why can't the Nextel Sprint Cup cars go back to these kind of cars? And anyway, I thought the Nationwide cars were going to go to more production based models like the Dodge Challenger, Chevy Camaro, Ford Mustang etc.? These Nationwide cars provide much better racing!

  • lou13/02/2010 at 18:56

wait... are you lot watching nascar??

  • Scott Woodwiss13/02/2010 at 18:57

Yup, Nationwide series race at Daytona. With added Danica. Quite a lot of her so far, actually.

  • Scott Woodwiss13/02/2010 at 19:09

So you could say this is the equivalent of most F1 drivers taking part in the GP2 races, if they were allowed.

  • Dan Brunell13/02/2010 at 19:10

So you could say this is the equivalent of most F1 drivers taking part in the GP2 races, if they were allowed.

For Patrick going from ARCA to Nationwide is like going from Ford3000 to GP2.

NASCAR is actually a little bit more interesting this year since they decided to open the regulations and the restrictor plate a bit.

(*Are you listening FIA and FOM?*)

  • Scott Woodwiss13/02/2010 at 19:11

NASCAR. Basically, it's NASCAR's equivalent to the Indy 500, if you like.

Yup, Indy 500 is IndyCar, hence the name! It's called the 500 because it's a 500 mile, which works out to 200 laps.

  • Pat W13/02/2010 at 19:14

daytona 500 is nascar? IRL?... #seriouslyknowsnothingaboutit

NASCAR has three series. The top one is the Cup and their biggest race of the year is the first one, the Daytona 500.

There is a 2nd series called Nationwide Series and that's what we're watching now.

The third is Trucks (American term for pickups) which is what Piquet will drive later.

NASCAR is technically a governing body with a number of series. The top three are the Truck Series, the Nationwide Series, and then the Sprint Cup series.

Drivers and teams are not restricted from running in other NASCAR series. For example Kyle Busch usually runs in all three series over the course of the weekend. Many of the Cup driver such as Earnheart and Stewart own Nationwide teams.

Danica is in one of Earnhearts cars.

Its worse at Daytona. There are other races where drafting, car position and strategy mean more and they are more interesting.

  • Dan Brunell13/02/2010 at 19:20

but..they just go round in circles.. i think i'd rather get into rally than nascar.. it just seems...odd..

I am not arguing NASCAR's case, but growing up watching a lot of oval racing, it can be exciting. It is just a lot different than road racing. It took me years to understand what was going on the track during an oval race.

it's really...really different. I think i prefer track racing as it's what i'm familiar with. Plus i'm not a huge fan of any of the drivers racing so that's not a pull either.

Danica Patrick is in this race? I didn't realize that! I wish the commentators would of told me earlier.

Now there's something they never did when F1 was on ITV - come out from commercials to go live to an accident.

  • Scott Woodwiss13/02/2010 at 19:31

Danica just got the Aaron's Lucky Dog Free Pass, which I think means she gets to go back on the lead lap.

  • Dan Brunell13/02/2010 at 19:31

I will give Danica credit, she does give back decent feedback

Yeah, she switched her personal management company IMG. They are a top five personal management company.

It shows, she is so much more polished now in the interviews (a lot less "You knows") and has been a lot more aggressive in getting her in everything. They are pushing her to go to NASCAR because that is where the money is.

i'm pleased i'm not the only one who feels like they've lost hours..

I lost 3 hours today. Lost half an hour not having my hair cut, 2 hours sorting stuff out and the last half hour's just whistled by faster than a Force India.

Are you just doing racing books or would there be any possibility of books with the odd page missing appearing?

    cheers Steven :)

Well it's very kind. I'm only here very briefly so you may have to keep on with the role :)

Wow it's quiet here tonight. I've just been preparing all my cameras for tomorow. I'm going into my local town to take photos which represent my 'thoughts on the town' which also have to include 'shots of active members of the community'.... I think Falmouth Uni hate me already, it's not going to be easy, my town is horrible!!

Are they setting you assignments before giving you a place?

  • lou13/02/2010 at 23:37

Are they setting you assignments before giving you a place?

yeah. basically cause Falmouth is one of the leading art/photography unis in the UK they get loads of entries, plus due to their 'unique location' they fine it's easier to give you a project, (8 shots for photography) and get you to send them in. They then judge you on those and you will/wont get an interview based on them. I just wish my town was nice enough/ had an active community. It's so hard to get an interview there :(

Today I had what is a great day by definition. I got up late (11AM...), had a delicious breakfast (chocolate and toasts with home made milk sweet), and took a bus to the base of a near mountain. I went up (2hs of walking in a beautiful sunny 60ºA day), had lunch with this view in front of me, and got back home in time to take a good shower and have dinner.

    I LOVE this city... :-)
