Yes. Fifty years ago Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space. Just in time before they did it too. :-)
But let's go back to earth and see if there are some news, links and things. Much has been said about the race, penalties, winners and losers so I want repeat it. I might only say that in my opinion the penalty for Lewis and Fernando was simply ridiculous. Joe has his opinion too, but I stick to mine. And Alonso could have reached the podium if he stayed a little bit cooler in his stubborn Spanish head ...
Anyways, Ferrari announced they will make some aerodynamic changes for Turkey.
Some think Sergio Perez might replace Felipe Massa next year. Hummm ...
In the previous week this commercial made quite a career on the internet and elsewhere, but have you forgotten this fabulous Renault advert featuring Alonso (who else? ;D)? Or to be more precise: his bottom. Can you find it? ;-)
In football there's been ... goals. Nice one too. Very nice. Like this 3 beauties Dirky and Andy scored yesterday against Manchester City. Joe Hart was close, but not close enough. There where some more, see yourself in here. Is Arsenal back in the title race? I very much hope so although one cannot trust Arsenal ... Great team, very much likable, great potential, but ... They're that kind of team who lead 4:0 and lose the match anyway ...
Zlat has been banned for the matches for swearing at the linesman. So has been Arjen Robben: two-game ban after insulting the referee. Is this becoming a fashion thing in football? Tattoos aren't cool enough anymore?
Oh, and Happy Birthday to Jose Mourinho. Tomorrow night, in match against Tottenham, he will become 500 matches old. This explains the grey hair.
So. That will be it. I shall leave you right now and head to my office, but before I do it a quick reminder: Tweets of The Week and a spacey F1 Debrief are waiting to be read and listened to. Not here, here or here but only here. :-) And after you've done that listen to this too.
Have a lovely day and be good!
Hello april 12. I just had cake!
Hello!
Hello,
Grr Alonso & Ferrari.... But yay @ Carroll & Liverpool great match!
Happy Birthday Amy!

Happy Birthday Amy! Feliz Cumpleanos! Alles Gute zum Geburtstag! Hartelijk gefeliciteerd! :-)
Og Tilykke med fødselsdagen ;)
it really is. One of my friends just had a baby that a whopping 14 weeks early. Thankfully he'll be ok. Seems he just wanted to be born in this awesome month.
Cripes. Thats taking things a bit far.
i didnt know she was pregnant so when i saw the headline 'Kane and i would like to announce...' pop up on facebook i went 'ooh shes pregnant' before i read on. Then I went WHAT??
Oops, i got confused trying to quote yesterdays thread and posted it there:
Whats all this about?
Today I rode my first sub-25 minute cycle ride to work! That means I am 10 minutes quicker than since I restarted in February!
http://runkeeper.com/user/RubberGoat/activity/31479358
Also Happy Birthday Amy~!
Feeling Older/Wiser/Ready for the pub?
clearly something not talkaboutable
Didnt you buy a car to solve this problem? :D
:(
But its morning!
the first time i said 25 out loud when someone asked how old i was i felt older than usual! Then i went and bought an electric blanket since im a cold old lady.
That is cool, although you seem to be underground a number if times! (2 and 5 km)
No - we are not using it to commute because it would take too long, it would be too expensive and I need to get fit.
#ohdear
not going to hit the tui then?
Hmm could be a GPS fail or that could be because the ground is quite low - I live in a marshy area...
do i ever? Although i did say my challenge to not drink that i madein december would end today, its really not a challenge. Might keep going and see how far i get :)
morniiiiing
dont do it. you will just end up with a "how do I stop drinking" challenge
I gather Branson is doing his stewardess duties next month now
i really dont think thats likely! last night my brother and i shared a jug of coke #partyhard
how is everyone today?
Feeling really good. Gave the BBQ a shakedown test last night - hopefully tonight when my Russian friends come over we can cook Ribs and Sausages.
Tomorrow I plan to run during the day with a colleague around the old fort near the office...

I dont know why they call it brunch when its 12-4 realy its Lun-iner
not quite as easy to say
Hyvää Syntymäpäivää Amy!
Oooohh of course,
Happy Birthday Amy
Dreamt about Petrov last night. He came to the house in the middle of the night and left a present outside the front door. What a nice chap.
Later, Mr C and I were walking on a beach and I said to him that I'd have to give up learning French and start learning Russian.
That'll teach Franck to do a disappearing act.
(...Obsessed...)
;)
The Frenchman has super loyal fanbase :-)
я сердце Виталий?
Can I just say I love what you have done to the Twitter window in the Dashboard, BTW...
great, I will:
a) like the stress reliever figurine that everyone needs to smack
b) like a spice in the middle of mortar pestle action
Erm... sure thing.
What did we do?
It's "I heart Vitaly" google translated ;)
Sounds like fun
:)
yes, great day since the wake up call
Google translated..? It might mean something completely different...
When you click on a tweet, a popup window appears allowing for quick replies and stuff. It's really neat!
Sweet - it's nice and sunny here, which makes me happy
Probably!
Ah-ha! Interesting. About time I bought another domain :)
сердце - my faint recollection of my once fluent Russian says this one means "heart" , so you did very literal google translate :-)
All the Russian I know is Krazny, Spaciba, Privyet, Da and Niet!
"vodka водка" is quite international :-)
I kind of really want to see this film
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWHNA_j7h5A
;~)
Hi guys,
I don't know much Russian, but I can read the alphabet and what I know from other Eastern European languages means I can read Vitaly's tweets, and that's all the russian I need. hehe :)
Morning all! Happy birthday amy :)
Ooooohh... interesting
anyhoo,
morning lukeh and pamela
Hi all :)
Hey Pamela!
Hey Lukeh :)
Heh, Google's little image today is awesome.
Can anyone help Tommy with this one? http://twitter.com/#!/wtf1_co_uk/status/57735312864059392
Its great, im kinda disappointed it isnt interactive though
#spoiled
Indeed!
watching her do it is mindblowing :D
thanks for all the birthday wishes birthday wisherers.

James Allen does some sort of strategy briefing post race: http://www.jamesallenonf1.com/2011/04/a-deep-dive-into-race-strategies-from-f1-malaysian-grand-prix/
My, those graphs are messy!
Happy Birthday to Amy!
:) Katherine can read Vitaly's tweets too!
i bet she can't in tweetdeck, the last one read:
VP's site:... ... , , .
it's like morse code :)
interesting drill today in Taiwan, should have been there to see :-)
The Taiwanese air force used a closed-off motorway as a runway on Tuesday in a rare drill simulating a surprise attack from the mainland that had wiped out its major airbases.
What on Earth..?
Too many data series - a typical error. With graphs, less is more...
the goal of stats is always to hide and confuse by showing a lot ! :-)
I heard in the US something like 1 mile in 15 of interstates has to be straight enough to be used as a runway
Well that's one goal.
It's not mine.
This, to me, is just a bit sad.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-13044182
you probably do not work for any government then :-)
You can change it to display non latin languages but the font looks really horrible!
tried that, went back :)
webber's going skiing: http://www.attwilliams.com/news/view/1751

Horner's probably crying already
Oh dear

Are Force India mad? They have announced that they have launched the search for India's "One in a Billion" F1 driver. But India already has two???
http://fb.me/uv1Rjcwd
#points
Have you seen this open letter to Robert Kubica from Nick Heidfeld? http://www.nickheidfeld.com/?1001A0A1A10569
They're looking for the One in a Billion for the next 2 years because the exercise will be repeated in 2013, 2015 and so on.
I love that. I was thinking a lot about him this weekend, too.
Happy birthday Amy :)
thats really lovely. They should have left the Polish flag by his name on the garage haha.
and Happy Birthday Amy! :)
Unless there's a bike involved, none of them. If there is a bike involved, all bets are off...
Seems silly though. There's a perfectly good Indian F1 driver out there without a regular drive right now...
India has 1.2 billion people though? more than 3 times the population of the uk is excluded!
Maybe Mr Mallaya and Mr Chandok snr get along?
VJ tried to surplant the FIA local member with one of his own a few years ago i seem to remember? Vicky is the head of that at the moment
Also, Vijay promised to find a new talent within 5 years of starting his F1 team, so really he has to do it this year to keep his promise. Recruiting Karun Chandhok does not constitute finding new talent since Vicky Chandhok discovered his talent before Vijay even had a team.
Technically, it's more than that being excluded because it's only open to 14-17 year olds with an Indian passport or with Person of Indian Origin card (basically with a close enough relative being an India citizen)
both of those drivers want nothing to do with mallya of fif1. and who'd blame them?
Me...
you've never been shafted by vj though :)
Neither have they! (They've not been given seats but in both cases objective, logical reasons have existed).
I have no idea if thats right, wikipedia seem to think Vijay is head of the old one now. maybe Vicky is just in charge of the track
huh, vijay said narain was 'unfit to race' or some such, didn't he?
More like 20 times
Uk has 60milion ish? so 3x60 = 180 million which is nearly the missing 200 billion from the 1 in a billion search
There were 2 competing Indian NSAs for a time. If I recall correctly, the breakaway NSA was headed by Mallya, with the original one being headed by Mosley puppet Nazir Hoosein. When Nazir stepped down, Vicky became the new head of the original NSA (a position I think he held before Max intervened) and negotiations were entered to combine the two to become one NSA (as was supposed to be the case for India in the first place). Vicky ended up running the combined NSA and Vijay was therefore free to do other things like buy F1 teams.
I think this is my favourite news of the day!
http://gizmodo.com/#!5791161/disclaimers-in-email-signatures-are-not-just-annoying-but-legally-meaningless
Email signature disclaimers have absoloutly no legal force. Just there because someone else did it
He said he was not good enough for Force India - at a time when he'd just been chucked out of a Williams test seat. Given that he was up against Liuzzi and Klien (and several pay drivers) for the test seat, this was not exactly a surprise.
i have no time to google or argue, but avery quick check reveals:
Vijay Mallya dismissed Narain Karthikeyan and Karun Chandhok saying that they werent F1 material
i'd say they have good reason to want nothing to do with force india. at least for the time being.
oh right, i did 1200/60
I'd never have thought that was the case before. Learn something new every day.
ooh wrong quote, meant to reply to alia's other comment.
i guess when vijay looked around, he discovered he didn't have any friends so decided to search for some new ones.
Probably not. But it makes the driver search look like a folly
Gizmodo reblogging the economist article?
that's because it is. but then what choice does he have?
there's an indian grand prix this year and his team isn't employing either of their home drivers. this is clearly an arse-saving exercise.
Clearly. I'll bet Chandhok ends up racing there too.
That comment, made in late 2007, post-dated the stuff you quoted and in any case, when Karun got "dismissed" he hadn't matured in GP2. Only Toyota might have considered taking on someone who'd only come 15th in their one season of F1.
Analyses on drivers rarely hold for four years, especially in the case of rookies, and Karun would know that.
didn't vijay promise an indian driver on the podium for the first indian grand prix? or was that someone else?
No, he said from the beginning he was looking for new talent (among other things) and this he is now doing. Believe it or not, people in F1 do occasionally keep their promises, and I don't see why you have a problem with that.
hahahahahahha. if you'd had said that about anyone but vijay!
http://sidepodcast.com/post/are-force-india-slowly-coming-apart-at-the-seams
He did.
i shall look forward to that then :)
Vijay's been pretty good at keeping his promises (certainly better than the last 2 owners of that team, and better than some other current team bosses - at least with regard to public promises).
tell tat to liuzzi!
and all the people who went to Lotus
and the unpaid people who ran their wind tunnel...
He promised a driver on the podium for the Indian Grand Prix. He didn't specify the ethnicity.
This is where remembering what was said correctly is helpful...
I've no idea what that team has done to deserve so many awful team bosses
Indeed. Vijay's principles suddenly broke down when Mercedes offered loads of cash to break Liuzzi's contract in favour of Di Resta.
That one definitely blotted his copybook. It remains the exception rather than the rule. Besides, can you honestly tell me of any team boss who hasn't broken contract with a driver at some point in their tenure (even Peter Sauber did it to Nicola Larini in 1997)?
if you're being silly-pedantic... what about the other two people on the podium? or will there be only one person finishing the inaugural race?
I thought he had a deal, wasnt Sutil subbed in when he couldnt get another drive?
Having not seen a single one say anything about broken contracts (other than Mike Gascoyne, who by the sound of it may also have broken contract because there was near-civil-war in FIF1's management structure in late 2008), I have no idea what you mean by this.
Considering Force India thought the wind tunnel people had broken their contract with them (including with the alleged IP theft that still hasn't been cleared up) at the time, that wasn't exactly a surprise. If a supplier steals IP off a company, it's pretty normal to stop paying at that point, and it's equally normal for the supplier to complain (especially if they don't think they stole anything, as is the case with Aerolab).
He meant a driver from his own team. It would take a fairly spectacular rule change for Vijay to get all three drivers on the podium from his team ;)
It ran out of money at the wrong time...
back folks
:)
Speaking of which, at least Lotus are ramping up their junior programme to train emerging Asian drivers.
Whether make it or not is immaterial, but at least they are trying.
don't get me wrong alia, i like force india as a team and i like two of their drivers, but this announcement is nothing more than vijay saving face (again). i shall blog something about it later.
Vijay seems to think there was a performance break induced - in which case he'd have been looking pretty hard for a replacement. However Liuzzi and his staff didn't agree and I haven't seen enough evidence to say who is right or wrong on the question of the break.
However, it should have been cleared up much earlier - there was no excuse for waiting until late January to do the removal. Even I, as a Force India support, agree that was wrongful handling of the situation.
I don't see any way in which this saves face. If Vijay were face-saving, he'd have implemented the scheme about 18 months ago when the Indian supporters were screaming for it...
the focus at the opening gp will be squarely on vijay and there will be a lot of questions about why neither home driver is on his books, even as a test driver.
this is a diversionary tactic, nothing more.
by the way, force india supporters don't interest vijay, you're looking at the wrong people, he doesn't care.
voters and people who buy beer are probably the only people who vijay listens to.
He had a logical answer before, he'd have a logical answer then. How can you not see that?
Even Lotus have Malaysian drivers on the books!
what's the logical answer?
But it isn't logical to announce a search for the next Indian F1 star when the country already has two?
To be fair the only indian i know who is interested in f1 is in the news stand by my office. He thinks both Karun and Narin are hopeless.
He cares way more about how force india does than either of them when i chat to him
Not sure Karun has the reputation in india he does in the UK?
fact.
I dont think calling it 1 in a billion is the best name
3 in 1.2 billion has less of a ring to it :)
I've seen team owners not care at all about fans (yes Spyker - and to some extent Midland - I mean you) and what Vijay's doing is pretty close to the opposite. He's not yet at EJ levels of caring but he's doing a good job of looking after the fan support base.
He wouldn't be after voters, seeing as he left parliament in the 2008 elections. Beer-buyers (and plane-passengers) are people he'd be interested in, but he thrives on supporters. He likes to be liked :)
:D haha
Better drivers falling over themselves to get on the team. There was already one decent driver too many on the books at the start of the year without Vijay complicating things by getting an extra one (I doubt Vijay will think Narain's improved enough since 2008 to merit a seat). If you think the Liuzzi situation was bad, think what it would have been like if two drivers' contracts were broken in the same off-season (di Resta had a contract to be a tester) or if Karun had become team leader after half-a-season of GP experience (and a contract had been broken).
True :D
*1 in 400 Million...
my friend just turned up with cake <3
And what happens if they don't stick around? Where's the underbelly, the GP2 and F3 drivers, the sportscar and touring car drivers? You can't call it two and then done.
That's not the point of a driver search though is it? If they don't get to F1 then you have wasted your time and money...
Not necessarily. One can inspire the many, even if the one ultimately fails. It's a proven method of encouraging mass participation.
Yes it is. Throw drivers at the junior levels, see who sticks.
I would have thought a national team should be enough to inspire people too?
Sounds very wasteful to me. Is there nothing more scientific?
You can never have too much inspiration. Besides, it's easier to talk to an Indian driver in the process of succeeding than an already-succeeding Indian team, especially if the team lives on the other side of the planet.
Nothing that's been proven to work...
Obviously they'd be vetted for competence first, but the only way to see if someone is good enough is to have them race others
Specifically, this lot has to get through 10 practise laps and 5 qualifying laps, with one of those being among the 14 fastest of the venue they chose to qualify at, before making the competition finale, let alone claiming the prize...
Nope (apparently)
You know, when it comes to problem solving and account issues, Skype are utterly abysmal in every way imaginable
Agreed!
Basically, I have figured out that my account has been hacked. I've since tried to change my password, but when I go through the hoops of changing, the site won't let me enter a new password.
Went to the problem page and they have nothing better than a long FAQ section, with no option to contact Skype customer service directly.
Utter morons.
Hey guys.
hi lukeh
From Sunday, does anyone know why Buemi got a stop/go penalty on Sunday instead of a drive through for pitlane speeding?
buemi doesn't either.
Hmmmm... odd.
I read somewhere it was because he broke the limit by more than 20kmh
That's a huge margin to break the limit by - malfunction?
he pushed it but didn't think it came on so he pushed it again which deactivated it
pressed the button twice.
ahh, interesting.
120.6 was the FIA reported speed.
Wow...
That is a bit fast.
Although a little tame compared to the pit speeds pre-1994
:o
I went off in the gravel, 60kph too fast, nooooooooooo
:D
right I am off to sleep. For those in a timezone where its still my birthday, enjoy it for me :)
We shall, night :)
Any excuse for a bit of celebration.
night amy
Yay - TFL are reporting a good service on all tube lines. Cake!!
In work we've started selling a new cake that lets you do all the icing and stuff to put on top of a admittedly yummy chocolate cake. I've been trying to convince as many people to have a 'Happy Saturday' celebration just so I can try it :)
Even more so after someone bought it for a jokey cake and it ended up being nicer than the serious cake
pfft. Who needs an excuse for cake!!??
(don't tell my wife I said that)
Gahhhh
I'm having an "Office Space" type day
Hiii leiiigghh.... yeeahhh.... gonna have to ask you to get those TPS reports in, ok? Greeaattt.....
You should listen to the soundtrack ;)
Ughhhhhh...
Essentially, I have to access a new system for my job - something which, ideally, should only need my manager's approval.
For some strange reason, our IT department have decreed that I need six different approvals from different levels of IT management, including the Vice President of the IT division.
But it's fine, I've only been waiting for five days..................
Between that and dealing with solicitors dipped in absurdity, I need a drink.
That is pretty Bill Lumbergh-esque
Completely and utterly and in the worst ways
Thankfully, I learned to tune those voices out a while ago
:D
positive wednesday then?
the sun is out, the sky is blue and a new final cut pro is coming in about 12 hours... hopefully!
heheh.
Think I may have to watch the film tonight.
Woohoo!!
I am going to make my wednesday as positive as possible after a good opportunity being ruined a bit. Good weather, good music on, and already finding new opportunities. Good times!
I have been outside and everything!
It's supposed to be raining tomorrow and Thursday though
The positivity is not optional, I'm afraid.
oh **** off (in a nice way).
;)
Wait, is it thursday today or wednesday? I'm confused now
It's actually Tuesday today, but don't tell Mr C.
:D
Oh it's Tuesday
#positivewhateverdayitis
Although that means to say whatever day it is, I think me and mr c suffer from whateverdayitis
Hehehe!
I'm putting that in the dictionary.
it is???
♥
I come on here and start thinking I've actually spent 24 hours at school...
Hi peoples.
One last moan...
When I watched the Versus IndyCar qualifying show last night, it was so bad, I was desperately hoping Legard would make an appearance with EJ in tow...
Just a shocker!!
oh.
aha! There's no spanish wednesday that concludes it is not wednesday! :)
The thing that's keeping me going this week is my birthday trip to my favoritest steak restaurant of all time on Friday night.
Although we should definitely keep the #positiveday vibe going
ah-ha.
Yay! http://sidepodcastwiki.com/Dictionary#W
:)
if all days end with a 'y', they should start with a 'y' too. if everyday had the same name, there would be no confusion. what day is it? yanyday.
Yesterday starts and ends with a y.
everyday is yesterday? per.fect.
Sounds like it should be a song
I was just reading back and suddenly panicked that I owed a Daily for tomorrow... But I don't as it's Tuesday... Another positive :)
:)
:D
Anyway folks,
I must split - may be back this evening at some stage
:)
oOOohh! All excitied I know something about football which is positive...
...but it means correcting an error in the daily which is slightly bad...
...but it's only a little mistake and will make today's daily better so that's positive too!
(the match is against Spurs not Arsenal)
Football knowledge!
am confused. i read the daily and didn't see that and just re-read the daily and didn't see that? mind you i read the daily and still think it's wednesday, maybe i'm reading tomorrows?
I'm impressed.
You're reading the daily for yanyday
here it is:
hehehe.
I sit next to fourstar... I can still remember him being upset about when he wasn't allowed to play against Europe anymore or whatever it was.
ahh, thought it was the bit above. is that how you spell maurinho?
they banned him from football?
His team, the Arsenal, were playing in Europe, and then they lost and that means no more Europe games until next year.
which is to say this year but next season :)
got ya.
While Tottenham won the game in that round and went further than Arsenal...
Ping: http://www.f1minute.com/news/drivers-show-concern-over-the-rubber-marbles-in-malaysia
Evening all. I'm glad you started a Positive Tuesday because after my afternoon at work I was going to come and request one. :)
After seeing Lukeh mention somewhere (here? Facebook?) about Creme Egg ice creams I bought a pack, just had one, and they are nice.
I thought Amanda's Daily was a Spanish Wednesday and thought I had to do a Daily tomorrow, then remember I did one last week... Not that I don't enjoy them it's just.. time free for other stuff.
apart from the lack of Spanish
Ohhh sooooooooo good!
Are they less sickly than the real things?
I always think a Creme Egg is a good idea until about halfway through :)
I think they are but it may be because they have a lovely ice cream taste to them, but of course they still have the creme egg-ness about them. But yes, as amazing as creme eggs are they do tend to come with a bit of health consciousness :)
Much less, that's balanced by the ice cream. I'm struggling to see the resemblance because Creme Eggs don't have chocolate chips on top of the cream... although maybe they should.
Just what a Creme Egg needs... more sugar :)
Hello all. Things that made me smile today: I saw a great poster in town for the WWF stamps saying that they'd put a tiger in the post & "The Panda made us do it".
Also, the Swiss have a new stamp out to celebrate the 50th anniversary here http://genevalunch.com/files/2011/03/swiss_postage_stamp_100yrs_wwf_panda.jpg << Warning cute panda
I'd be tempted to actually write a letter if I could use that :)
I just added talkaboutable and untalkaboutable.
Ooh marvellous!
Race car engineering have some news on lotus:
apparently renault ran with 1malaysia branding on their car last weekend (because things were going to smoothly)
and nobody is reporting the lotus case because the judge banned all reporting http://www.racecar-engineering.com/cars/lotus-tl11/
because they were in malaysia, surely?
or do you mean the black and gold renaults ran with 1malaysia?
They did, on the front nose
i don't see it?
I saw a photo on the weekend of it on the part where the Senna logo is on the Williams, the toothy things holding the front wing to the nose
http://www.racecar-engineering.com/cars/renault-r31/
has that been photoshopped?
nope, it's there alright: http://www.autosport.com/gallery/photo.php/id/13270568
what the....??
ahh, i see. 1malaysia isn't a company? it's a concept anyone can buy into. so behar's just having another dig at tony?
I love my mum, she's just got me to check her emails for her to find something she was expecting and she went off telling my stepdad that she's happy she 'finally got sent the letter to her address box' :)
I think 1Malaysia is the thing started by the PM, and Tony is/was supposedly mates with the PM so he called his racing team 1Malaysia. I think I read that at Joe's a fair old while ago. I've no idea who the PM supports now.
so if tony loses, he has to call his team 1malaysia and dany can also run 1malaysia branding too?
that doesn't sound like a such a smart tony...
anyone for IE10?
http://ie.microsoft.com/testdrive/Info/Downloads/Default.html
No idea.

would love to hear lou and others thoughts on this big picture: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/9455739.stm
looks more like heath massaging his ego with a "i got this shot an no-one else did", rather than being a particularly good photo. might just be me though.
in positive news, it's petrov's tyre, for christine :)
That's kind of the point of it, so it says.
The Formula 1 big picture showcases a side of a dramatic, visual sport that television cannot always portray.
no?
Didn't see that on TV.
I think that's what annoys me about the big picture sometimes. Darren heath captures some fabulous pictures but that's not my idea of capturing the weekend I suppose. I'd rather something that blows me away visually and reminds me of the weekend if they're doing it following each race weekend.
Interesting to see the tyre like that though don't get me wrong, and I think it'd be a bit better if they didn't use the same photographer every time but that's just me.
Definitely that.
I prefer the tyre to something like this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/9438616.stm
There must be three billion pictures like that.
i really like the editing on this lotus video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cl6pZ0_G9Co
true
that technically is a better picture though.
Yeah I suppose you make a fair point. Again though with Paul Gilhan, I think his name was, you had some absolutely awesome photos of Melbourne that would've made the big picture from helicopters and stuff over the race but because it's restricted to Darren you only have his library. It kinda makes me sound like I'm hating on him but that's not the case, I just like to have variety and it would be a fine opportunity as well to share out a bit of credit to photographers on a very mainstream audience such as the BBC.
I feel like I'm explaining my point very badly #fail
"Oh, and Happy Birthday to Jose Maurinho. Tomorrow night, in match against Arsenal, he will become 500 matches old. This explains the grey hair.
ahh, thought it was the bit above. is that how you spell maurinho?"
Updated: It should be "Mourinho" ("The Special One" one is so much easier :D) and I ment Tottenham, of course, not Arsenal. I blame my fingers for beaning stubborn ...
hehe, i looked weird to me, but i wasn't sure.
"hehe, i looked weird to me, but i wasn't sure."
hahaha it was very early in the morning ... :-) #sleepyeyes
ooohh I didn't even notice till you mentioned it! Deary me :)
the man is a legend though. I really miss him from the premier league even though he was managing the evil blue team :)
"ooohh I didn't even notice till you mentioned it! Deary me :)
the man is a legend though. I really miss him from the premier league even though he was managing the evil blue team :)"
yeah, one has to admit, he's the best football coach there is at the moment. And a very charismatic one.
He said something brilliant recently: "I am not the best, but no-one is as goos as me". genius! hehe
"good". I ment " good"
If he can beat the best team in the world 4-0 he's certainly doing something right...
Still can't get over the fact he didn't lose a single home game in 9 years over 3 different clubs.
"Still can't get over the fact he didn't lose a single home game in 9 years over 3 different clubs."
ambicious bloke. :-)
Oh, I know why I wrote Arsenal ... I was listening to BBC while writing and they were talking about them. #blamebbc :-)
We know who's to blame really, to bring out a retro hashtag
#blamesutil

deffo!!! Who else? hehe
Evening all
That is an incredible stat. I can't believe that I have only just heard of it
Rankings today, all suggestions very welcome :)
#rankings
"That is an incredible stat. I can't believe that I have only just heard of it"
So it gets even more incredible. :-)
Air Petrov
di Resta for doing a great interview on the grid while others were hiding
Karun for his guide round Lotus on the BBC including doorstepping Heikki then being really sorry he had done it
Lotus for some great videos
erm...
Points for Nick for saying on Ted Talk his little third place trophy was 'made to measure', very sweet :)
#rankings
Eeeeevening :)
I'm SUPER tired today
You would have thought someone would have picked up on that after 2 or 3 years and the media would have discussed it since. I guess doing it over three countries means it was not as obvious
Sauber for this: http://www.youtube.com/user/saubermotorsport?feature=mhum#p/a/u/0/JBFJ0q2I8dE
Shoo. Sleep :)
I also liked during the race how when the top three were coming out onto the podium, Nick and Jenson both politely stopped and allowed Vettel to go through so he could go onto the podium first
#rankings
At 7?? I'm not a toddler :P
Although minus points for Vettel calling Renault, Lotus!
:D
Ooooh also Jenson asking Nick what to call the team mid-conference :D

Perez looks like Tom Cruise when he smiles right at the end of that
You are not that tired then.
Perez for appearing in my dream the other night. He took me on drive in his F1 car and show me the paddock. Dunno why him ... Fernando????
I am but I need to stay up until at least 9 or I'm going to get jet lag.
That was very nice of him.
"That was very nice of him."
:-) The nicest thing was: there's was no Adrian S. hehe
"Bridgestone to Sponsor Alpine Ski World Cup Events"
that's preferable to f1?
Needs more ice.
Crashed ice.
This week in bread????
Also, no idea if you can see this, but Sauber are offering a team viewing for the Spanish GP at Hinwil: http://community.sauberf1team.com/events.cfm?luuid=2R53DKE9
Hehehe he is very annoying!!
does it require facebook likes, cause i'm all out for the year? :)
It requires 190 Swiss Francs and some tickets and hotels in Switzerland, I think.
i can see the comp, can you copy the requirements, i should i get a login?
*can't see.
#rankings
minus points for Ferrari for THAT tweet
Its not a competition, its just if you give some cash to them, they allow you into Hinwil to watch the Spanish GP.
"If he can beat the best team in the world 4-0 he's certainly doing something right..."
he wasn't playing against us, RG ... ;D
oooooh, like the renault thing we went to?
Yes. Basically.
hinwill is quite far away. hmm.
Surrey is closer...
#freemercedesthingy
hmm?
Remember me and lou said in the Mercedes post about the race days at Mercedes Benz World being free?
oh yeah! i forgot.
#sidepodspace
As Amanda said in her daily it was 50 years ago today that Yuri Gagarin became the fist man to orbit the Earth and proved the sceptics who said man could not survive space wrong.
It is amazing how fast progress was made after that first flight that lasted for less than 2 hours and only completed one orbit.
Remember NASA wanted 7 years to produce the successor to the space shuttle which was little more than an upgraded Apollo. Within 8 years of Gagarin's flight they had produced the Mercury which took a single astronaut to space then the Gemini with two and finally Apollo which had 3 occupants.
It took only a couple of months over 8 years from Gagarin's flight to Neil Armstrong standing on the moon. That is incredible.
As a result of a computer glitch that delayed the launch 20 years to the day after Gagarin the space shuttle made its first launch. That degree of progress is incredible.
Compare the progress of those first 20 years with the utter stagnation of the 30 since and you can see why commercial space travel is long overdue.
I only found out a few minutes ago about Yuri's night. http://yurisnight.net/about/
I have come to the conclusion that I am interested in so many things that I can't possibly keep up with all of them.
alex lyndsay owns 30 copies of final cut pro?
*looks down at our single copy*
Does it look lonely?
like an only child.
only 30?
:)
just overheard in sidepodcast hq...
"oh my god why is heidfeld so lovely too??"
for flips sake, we're not meant to like renault!!
No one told me he was nice too! What with the made to measure trophy and an open letter to Kub. I can't cope.
Looks like the evil Bahar has come up with a cunning plan to get the fans onside
told you i wanted an international day of heidfeld.
Astonishing.
Very much so, national agencies shouldn't be doing LEO cargo runs unless it is a sensitive/classified payload. As long as there are agreed safety standards which are the tightest known to man, any company should be allowed (and I guess there are since a lot of the national craft are built by commercial companies anyway). There probably needs to be a Space Traffic Control too. :)
I do that just with racing let along the important things
Also if you go to the Google homepage there is a very nice design.
Hold your mouse cursor over it.
He's always been like that but his driving mediocrity hid it.
I think NASA and the other similar agencies should be establishing specifications and standads.
Space traffic control is a huge problem already with hundreds of satellites and who knows how many pieces of space junk flying around
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/90651
Looks like diResta has been reading up on Bill Shankly. Shankly was the Scottish manager of Liverpool in the 60s and would always talk up the opposition. In those pre-internet days it was very difficult to get info on games that had happened the day before. Returning from one European trip Shankly went on at length about what a great team the opposition had been. Eventually he paused long enough for someone to ask the score. "We beat them 5-1"
Paul is going about things the right way.
Brian blessed is awesome and famous for his beard so it must be the beard
Interesting
Everyone hear about the used space shuttles have been allocated to certain museums....?

Evening/Afternoon/Morning all :)
Helllooo Scott.
Ping: http://sidepodcast.com/post/nick-heidfeld-makes-a-big-jump-in-this-weeks-christines-rankings
Hi Scott. Glad they have found a home.
Hey champ - what's new? not a lot going on here. just a bunch of work and boring stuff....I need more sidepodcasters to come and drag me away from the desk ;) how r u?
*tugs hard*
I was kind of expecting them to go to the highest bidder and there'd be some crazy person that buys one to live in it. tow it around like a caravan Top Gear style ;)
>>Discovery heads to the Air and Space Museum's Udvar-Hazy Center in Virginia, Atlantis to Florida's Kennedy Space Center, and Endeavour to the California Science Center in Los Angeles.
Also, the prototype Enterprise, which never flew in space, goes to the Intrepid museum in New York City.
All good in my end of the world.
aww shucks. This time difference thing doesn't work out for me too much either - you grab and end of the transatlantic cable, i'll grab the other and we have a tug of war and get america a little closer to UK. This country is totally wrapped up in the wedding - with few Kennedy's left, we have to look elsewhere for royalty now ;)
nice to hear. I did make a little detour to your blog the other day. hope you're not getting into any trouble?
Nah, just a mis-understanding between me and Heikki. All settled now...
And ping-ping: http://sidepodcast.com/post/great-video-turns-heads-in-the-team-rankings-this-week
No.News to me
If I become famous, you can use my name ;)
Are you disappointed that you didn't get one? I would have like to see one go to a non-US place but I guess it's tax dollars. We had the Russian one go to australia a while back. The russian space shuttle (for those that don't know...never flew, was almost the same, and called Buran which means blizzard) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buran_(spacecraft)
Oh, I will do.
CORRECTION: never flew with people in space according to wiki....but did actually fly.
I'd stop waiting on that right now!
Great debut column for James Hinchcliffe, the IndyCar rookie (but a Lights/A1GP veteran and commentator/pit reporter for A1GP/Champ Car):

I had a good laugh when people saw me that weekend and would say that I was handling not being in the car very well because inside my head I was singing 'I know something you don't know' like a five-year-old...
It is totally understandable they'd want to keep them in the US, I'm always amazed there's a capsule at the Science Museum in London.
Evening folks
You never know, you might win the lottery, or whatever they do in Boston, get rich, become well known...
How is everyone on this slightly fresh Tuesday evening?
I assumed since there are only 4 that they would all stay in the USA. I expect they will occasionally stick one on the back of the modified 747 and send it out on loan
There are a lot more of those. 11 Apollos that actually went into space I think
Live stream of the Austin USGP announcement which starts momentarily:

It's Bbbbbbbbbbbob
Not working for me, but from the BBC's MotoGP pit reporter Azi Farni on Twitter:
it´s official!! The Circuit of the America in Austin, Texas, has a 10 year deal in MotoGP for all 3 classes, starting in 2013
Working for me
Excellent
Red McComb
Meeting construction milestones
Keeping happy secrets that totally contradict current thinking is always a funny experience :)
Tavo Hellmund
Destination not just a race track
'Circuit of the Americas' is new info isn't it?
Bob Varsha laying it on thick. Just like they did with USF1
Haven't heard that
At least it's not Ken Anderson presenting
Red McComb
Name - Circuit of the Americas
Tagline - Home of the world championships
So, did the Beeb / MotoGp possibly go an hour too early with their news release?
COTA - WHY??????????
Alternate streaming link that works: http://www.statesman.com/
Looks like it
The presentation is not exactly professional
i dare not watch.
Wonder of if it was a GMT/BST screw up
Texas, y'all.
You could risk one eye
Hmmm... politicians and money men congratulating eachother...
Possibly, it seems odd.
noooooo. i'll be happy for them if the event goes ahead, that's as much as i got
The Statemen link has a really small video box
They do know this is being broadcast outside Texas don't they?
It's almost like they are justifying something to local people and politicians
A large chunk of USGP visitors to Indy came from South America.
You would've had the same in India and wherever else
It just seems to be aimed more at Texans rather than the world. I guess there must be a lot of local media there
Steep run to turn one!

Evening.
I'm watching the Man U. game on delayed coverage as I had friends over for dinner. I have an amaretto and I am writing the daily ;)
Hey Gavin,
Mind if I leave you a link?
That is stupid. Uphill braking zones are shorter than level braking zones. That will massively decrease overtaking and increase accidents
Yes please - I haven't linked to you as much lately.
Cheers :)

anyone else?
F1 races have one room medical centres??? What decade is this guy from?
I was just thinking the same, this stuff is standard now
The '70s...
I hope Syd Watkins is not watching this
Wow - nice to see all the corporate folks are well taken care of...
That is always my top priority for any track
It'd be so silly to assume otherwise
By the way, how's your hospitality suite coming along?
That's it? Not even a shot of the track
Business conference not a fan conference... missed opportunity or will do they that later
Everyone thinks the prawn sandwich brigade is what itr's all about!
Austin reminds me of Adelaide - Varsha
Wow Bob - how, exactly?
they're gonna loose out to melbourne too?
They are both really friendly
Tavo - We have a great relationship with Austin Energy. They have been nothing more than accomodating.
Surely nothing less
Stream fail
But only after Melbourne loses out to New York
and yet equally unimportant as cities?
Black screen - dead sound. Guess I am going to miss the Moto GP announcement
I hear Melbourne, Florida is a nice play for F1
Working here still on the Statesman site

Ben Spies
Just loaded that and theother came back
'Spees' in Trinidad are spicy fried chick pea snacka
10 years of Moto GP
Didn't Indy have F1 and Moto GP at the same time?
I hate that he has to explain to them what Moto GP is
I think Moto GP started at Indy in '08
silverstone does.
No
He said the first time in America
ahh, you can give him that.
MotoGP is weirdly awesome
It is a great sport
and Barcelona
I love it and I have done for years.
Not more years than me
and Sepang. and Shanghai
they might have dropped Shanghai
Same
I wouldn't even try and compete with you on that score, Mr Roy!
Think they did.
It is hard to compete against eternity :)
I guess you missed Barry Sheene passing Kenny Roberts at Silverstone(I think) and leaning off the bike, looking back at him and giving him 2 fingers.
Great race with those two
OI!!!!!!!!
Not sure IndyCar or NASCAR would go to Austin.. but I think ALMS or GrandAm will.
COTA leather jackets
I wasn't born when Barry Sheene was still awesome
OMG
1981. My first proper year of any motorsport was 1988
Was that Kevin Schwantz who is promoting the MotoGP race? I missed that because the stream died. That would explain the choice of bike
Great year to start with
It was. I watched it on and off until 1992 when I really got hooked on F1. 1993 sealed the deal for me.
Yeah
It is Schwantz. What an amazing rider he was. I will never understand how he is walking around and Wayne Rainey ended up in a wheel chair.
Senna in an outclassed McLaren. Epic stuff
It really was. Prost was an embarrassed man that day.
Their general contractor is only working 6 days a week??
It is still running? The Stateman one went off air so I thought it ended
They are taking questions
http://stream.speedtv.com/breaking-news
Texas isn't that far from Australia... let's see some V8 supercars!
black
No way would Gossage OK another IndyCar racee in Texas that isn't at TMS - he'd pull his event in a second
GT1?
Lewis Hamilton, Alex Wurz, Schumacher
No idea what he is saying about them as it is all in Spanish. Something about curvas technica. I guess corner design
I still have a picture but the conference just ended
A good fit - they already have two "Americas" events near year end
They've been talking for a little while about trying to break into the US if they can find the right venue, perhaps even two.
wonder what support races an AMerican GP would have?
Indy had Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup, FBMW Americas (now defunct) and IPS (now Indy Lights).
Right I should finish off these results..
yes. Then I can link to them
You don't necessarily have to.. :)
Oh but of course sir!
Hello everyone.
New race circuit in Austin to call itself, "Circuit of the Americas."
Am I the only one who is offended
Nope. We just watched the live stream. The insist on calling it COTA. Why would anyone do that?
what's offensive?
COTA sounds awful
Not offended - I just thought the stream was a waste of time
That's different than being offensive, unless you're offended by awfulness :)
Mr C's attitude is rubbing off on me.
Let's test this hypothesis...
I happen to think Peter Windsor is a wonderful man.
;)
http://circuitoftheamericas.com/
Promo video for Austin (I won't call it "COTA"). Maybe you've seen it?
I think what is offensive to me is it sounds jingoistic.
I think we need to step outside and have a "passionate" discussion... ;)
I am sorry but should there not be a line after this rather than just a smiley?
A little Teddy Roosevelt-esque?
Just watched the live stream but not their promo
Technically, it sounds a bit too much of the Monroe Doctrine with a spice of the Roosevelt Corollary.
It falls under the phrase I heard from my Latin and South American friends, América para los americanos or America for the Americans.
I understand. I thought maybe it was so they didn't have to build another track anywhere in 'the Americas'.
hehehe, Dan hasn't bee replaced by a Pod Person!
cota ugly?
hehe
The track looks like the orange matchbox car plastic tracks I used to put at crazy angles and the cars would go flying off.
Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to see any kind of F1 facility at all anywhere in the US, but wow. Maybe I have to get a closer look.
yes, yes, yes!! omg that's it.
First google return for COTA is for a bus service in Columbus Ohio
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0200550/
I like how for years people have complained at Tilke's flat tracks so he's blatently though 'Fine! You want elevation? I'll put a corner INTO THE SKY.'
http://demo.physics.uiuc.edu/lectdemo/descript/1290/coverpic.jpg
I got that. It just occurred to me to search for COTA to see what I got
heheheeheeh
hahaha!! It doesn't look like they can even make that corner, but that would seem to....not be a good thing...
I'll go look at that again. Maybe I totally saw it wrong.
I think he was forced to. It's fairly hilly out there, my Austin friend says.
i'm not trusting another speed tv presentation again. when the chequered flag falls sunday afternoon i shall be happy for them.
The track reminds me of a bobsled track though. Start high, left right left right left right. Climb back up. and so on.
CoolCota RunningsThe problem is that you have a straight then an uphill braking zone. That is just stupid. Gravity just shortens the braking distance. He really does need to be put up against a wall and shot. Then beaten up with rolled up Autosports
♥
Woo! Hills are good.
Absolutely.
Be interesting to hear how people do with the track runs :) Ant and Crofty weren't exactly looking forward to Eau rouge when we saw them, hehehe.
Sidepodspace news - Museum of Flight in Seattle lost in a bid house one of the space shuttle.
It's a shame to because the building that they are building to house their new space exhibit would of looked awesome with a shuttle in it.
Beating him after he is shot? It would seem more effective to beat him with the rolled up Autosports before he's shot, just in case the shot kills him.
before and after.
During as well, if possible.
Congratulations to Gavin on his TMR Game results. :)
(ping)
I guess there were lots of bids
I like this thinking outside the box.
You could do that as well.
:D
hah
I've been to Austin a bunch. It's perfect to put a decent track in with the gentle rolling hills, hard ground build-able lands, and open spaces.
If Tilke screws this up, he will have no excuses.
You'd think they'd wait to see if they got a shuttle before building a room to put the shuttle in
Looks to me like he has screwed it up
I guess you have to show the plan as part of the bidding process
They were already building a space wing to the museum. They took a gamble and designed it to meet the criteria set by NASA to hold a shuttle.
Just watched a really interesting program about Neil Armstrong on the iplayer. It was made 2 or 3 years ago so it is a repeat but well worth watching.
Unfortunately it will be UK only
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00lkvln/Being_Neil_Armstrong/
I guess they have to bid for lots of other bits of space stuff to fill it now
I got home to a message out of the blue from an ex-boyfriend I haven't been in contact with for years saying that he's thinking of me and hoped I had a beautiful day. What's up with that??
They already have a pretty decent collection. I think they are getting the trainer from Houston.
Sounds like he is hoping to get re-acquainted
STA?
beer?
Fat chance. He wasn't honest with me.
Nice of him to leave a message, but...
hehe
Could be a drunk dial, but it was 3:30pm, in my timezone.
Maybe. However, I think we are getting the full size mock up they have in Houston. It looks like a Shuttle without wings.
I thought you meant the shuttle training aircraft
Well this is a new one. Fernando Alonso's new advertising deal is...

Worktops?
Here's the 3D design of the Austin track. Hopefully the link works.
http://formula1unitedstates.com/images/pressKit/F1 USGP BasicTrack LayoutwElevation.pdf
oops. http://formula1unitedstates.com/images/pressKit/F1 USGP BasicTrack LayoutwElevation.pdf
did he hear it as silverstone?
ok, forget it.
Try this one
http://formula1unitedstates.com/track.html
:)
That one works.
I hate the circuit design. The 3-D map has been around for months. The first corner make no sense and there are far too many corners
I haven't paid any attention until today.
I had to look when they originally announced the circuit. It's typical Tilke
There's a whole pile of F150 degrees in the bottom left corner
Pluggety plug plug
Engine and Gearbox Update (Before China 2011)
I've been on F1 Fanatic too much - I initially thought they'd called the track Comment of the Afternoon...
Oh dear
Good evening
Hey Bassano. How are you?
Evening
I'm ok but am missing my phone though not having twitter is somewhat liberating :D
*pumps fist*
What's up with it?
Won't charge or sync, the contacts look to have a small nick. They'll likely swap it over when I see the Apple Store on Thursday
I had one of those yesterday too!
#Freaky
There's more on Austin here - http://plus.autosport.com/premium/feature/3422/a-trip-out-to-texas-how-the-us-gp-venue-is-shaping-up/
Good evening!
Evening
Maybe both of our exes are now together and decided to call. :)
You got a message from an ex-boyfriend?
Mine's in Sydney!
Well, no. I didn't feel the need to point that out but thanks for being thorough :D
I just went to the Apple Store Saturday for my adapter that wasn't working, not charging right. Are we living parallel lives?
Mine's in the Bahamas!
hehe
:D
Any life changing events in the next few days, just let me know. I'll do likewise :)
Deal.
Ah damn! When did Chalk Talk become US only? :(
I may have just fallen asleep on the couch for an hour...
You're not sure? Do you hear Edith Piaf?
It wasn't two days ago
Or is there a wardrobe nearby where you are? Is there snow on the floor outside it?
:)
it's fine on itunes.
Je ne regret rien!
Ooh, it's on iTunes?
I usually go in through Speed's website. Thanks
I had a flashback to 2008 when I had a look at the comments from my old Sony Ericsson phone. Mobile Realtime was err, interesting
Peter Schmeichel has facial hair. That is all kinds of wrong.
How odd
He has a blonde goatee
We need a bug-eyed smiley
O.O
Good morning boys and girls
Hi Amy.
Hi Amy, do you have any official news or did I miss it?
Hi Amy.
Is it talkaboutable yet?
Good morning!
Nope. I need to send an email.
ahh, you just missed the end of your birthday :(
OK still #confidential
every day I get to work at 9, every day 9 is midnight :)
Pingaling: http://sidepodcast.com/post/daily-13th-april-2011
feeling a bit poorly tonight, so just a quick comment in regards to this
While i think it's a nice photo.. depth of field etc.. it holds pretty much no reference to the weekend, and is purely submitted to the bbc for the big picture for Darren to basically say 'look, yet again i'm getting shots no one else is.. look how great i am.'
I don't like that kinda attitude. if he had more to say about the image other than 'i'm so great' then that would be fine. I would much rather see one of his amazing more arty photographs that he takes over the weekend which look great and either picture a key driver in the race, or a key moment.. or just something big and impressive. Giving the bbc rubbish images like this doesn't help his profile.. and tbh suggests to me that he had a bit of a bad weekend for shots.. maybe all of his other shots were a bit samey?.. anyways.. i'm not a fan of the bbc big picture, i'd much rather see a selection of images by all types of people which are both visually beautiful and relevant to the news.. luckily such a thing exists. - http://www.f1bigpicture.com/
:)
cheers lou.
Beautifully said, Lou. From a non-photographer's point of view, this is illuminating, and put words to what I could not articulate. Thanks. :)
