Yes. Fifty years ago Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space. Just in time before they did it too. :-)

But let's go back to earth and see if there are some news, links and things. Much has been said about the race, penalties, winners and losers so I want repeat it. I might only say that in my opinion the penalty for Lewis and Fernando was simply ridiculous. Joe has his opinion too, but I stick to mine. And Alonso could have reached the podium if he stayed a little bit cooler in his stubborn Spanish head ...

Anyways, Ferrari announced they will make some aerodynamic changes for Turkey.

Some think Sergio Perez might replace Felipe Massa next year. Hummm ...

In the previous week this commercial made quite a career on the internet and elsewhere, but have you forgotten this fabulous Renault advert featuring Alonso (who else? ;D)? Or to be more precise: his bottom. Can you find it? ;-)

In football there's been ... goals. Nice one too. Very nice. Like this 3 beauties Dirky and Andy scored yesterday against Manchester City. Joe Hart was close, but not close enough. There where some more, see yourself in here. Is Arsenal back in the title race? I very much hope so although one cannot trust Arsenal ... Great team, very much likable, great potential, but ... They're that kind of team who lead 4:0 and lose the match anyway ...

Zlat has been banned for the matches for swearing at the linesman. So has been Arjen Robben: two-game ban after insulting the referee. Is this becoming a fashion thing in football? Tattoos aren't cool enough anymore?

Oh, and Happy Birthday to Jose Mourinho. Tomorrow night, in match against Tottenham, he will become 500 matches old. This explains the grey hair.

So. That will be it. I shall leave you right now and head to my office, but before I do it a quick reminder: Tweets of The Week and a spacey F1 Debrief are waiting to be read and listened to. Not here, here or here but only here. :-) And after you've done that listen to this too.

Have a lovely day and be good!

No - we are not using it to commute because it would take too long, it would be too expensive and I need to get fit.

Dreamt about Petrov last night. He came to the house in the middle of the night and left a present outside the front door. What a nice chap.

Later, Mr C and I were walking on a beach and I said to him that I'd have to give up learning French and start learning Russian.

That'll teach Franck to do a disappearing act.

  • Alianora La Canta12/04/2011 at 12:38

Seems silly though. There's a perfectly good Indian F1 driver out there without a regular drive right now...

Also, Vijay promised to find a new talent within 5 years of starting his F1 team, so really he has to do it this year to keep his promise. Recruiting Karun Chandhok does not constitute finding new talent since Vicky Chandhok discovered his talent before Vijay even had a team.

  • Alianora La Canta12/04/2011 at 12:39

India has 1.2 billion people though? more than 3 times the population of the uk is excluded!

Technically, it's more than that being excluded because it's only open to 14-17 year olds with an Indian passport or with Person of Indian Origin card (basically with a close enough relative being an India citizen)

VJ tried to surplant the FIA local member with one of his own a few years ago i seem to remember? Vicky is the head of that at the moment

Uk has 60milion ish? so 3x60 = 180 million which is nearly the missing 200 billion from the 1 in a billion search

There were 2 competing Indian NSAs for a time. If I recall correctly, the breakaway NSA was headed by Mallya, with the original one being headed by Mosley puppet Nazir Hoosein. When Nazir stepped down, Vicky became the new head of the original NSA (a position I think he held before Max intervened) and negotiations were entered to combine the two to become one NSA (as was supposed to be the case for India in the first place). Vicky ended up running the combined NSA and Vijay was therefore free to do other things like buy F1 teams.

huh, vijay said narain was 'unfit to race' or some such, didn't he?

He said he was not good enough for Force India - at a time when he'd just been chucked out of a Williams test seat. Given that he was up against Liuzzi and Klien (and several pay drivers) for the test seat, this was not exactly a surprise.

  • Mr C12/04/2011 at 12:48

i have no time to google or argue, but avery quick check reveals:

Vijay Mallya dismissed Narain Karthikeyan and Karun Chandhok saying that they werent F1 material

i'd say they have good reason to want nothing to do with force india. at least for the time being.

there's an indian grand prix this year and his team isn't employing either of their home drivers. this is clearly an arse-saving exercise.

Clearly. I'll bet Chandhok ends up racing there too.

  • Alianora La Canta12/04/2011 at 12:55

Vijay Mallya dismissed Narain Karthikeyan and Karun Chandhok saying that they werent F1 material

That comment, made in late 2007, post-dated the stuff you quoted and in any case, when Karun got "dismissed" he hadn't matured in GP2. Only Toyota might have considered taking on someone who'd only come 15th in their one season of F1.

Analyses on drivers rarely hold for four years, especially in the case of rookies, and Karun would know that.

  • Mr C12/04/2011 at 12:56

Clearly. I'll bet Chandhok ends up racing there too.

didn't vijay promise an indian driver on the podium for the first indian grand prix? or was that someone else?

No, he said from the beginning he was looking for new talent (among other things) and this he is now doing. Believe it or not, people in F1 do occasionally keep their promises, and I don't see why you have a problem with that.

He promised a driver on the podium for the Indian Grand Prix. He didn't specify the ethnicity.

This is where remembering what was said correctly is helpful...

  • Pat W12/04/2011 at 13:03

I've no idea what that team has done to deserve so many awful team bosses

  • RubberGoat12/04/2011 at 13:04

Indeed. Vijay's principles suddenly broke down when Mercedes offered loads of cash to break Liuzzi's contract in favour of Di Resta.

  • Alianora La Canta12/04/2011 at 13:04

    tell tat to liuzzi!

That one definitely blotted his copybook. It remains the exception rather than the rule. Besides, can you honestly tell me of any team boss who hasn't broken contract with a driver at some point in their tenure (even Peter Sauber did it to Nicola Larini in 1997)?

  • Mr C12/04/2011 at 13:04

He promised a driver on the podium for the Indian Grand Prix. He didn't specify the ethnicity.

if you're being silly-pedantic... what about the other two people on the podium? or will there be only one person finishing the inaugural race?

Indeed. Vijay's principles suddenly broke down when Mercedes offered loads of cash to break Liuzzi's contract in favour of Di Resta.

I thought he had a deal, wasnt Sutil subbed in when he couldnt get another drive?

  • Alianora La Canta12/04/2011 at 13:05

and all the people who went to Lotus

Having not seen a single one say anything about broken contracts (other than Mike Gascoyne, who by the sound of it may also have broken contract because there was near-civil-war in FIF1's management structure in late 2008), I have no idea what you mean by this.

  • Alianora La Canta12/04/2011 at 13:07

and the unpaid people who ran their wind tunnel...

Considering Force India thought the wind tunnel people had broken their contract with them (including with the alleged IP theft that still hasn't been cleared up) at the time, that wasn't exactly a surprise. If a supplier steals IP off a company, it's pretty normal to stop paying at that point, and it's equally normal for the supplier to complain (especially if they don't think they stole anything, as is the case with Aerolab).

  • Alianora La Canta12/04/2011 at 13:08

if you're being silly-pedantic... what about the other two people on the podium? or will there be only one person finishing the inaugural race?

He meant a driver from his own team. It would take a fairly spectacular rule change for Vijay to get all three drivers on the podium from his team ;)

  • Alianora La Canta12/04/2011 at 13:08

don't get me wrong alia, i like force india as a team and i like two of their drivers, but this announcement is nothing more than vijay saving face (again). i shall blog something about it later.

  • Alianora La Canta12/04/2011 at 13:11

Indeed. Vijay's principles suddenly broke down when Mercedes offered loads of cash to break Liuzzi's contract in favour of Di Resta.

Vijay seems to think there was a performance break induced - in which case he'd have been looking pretty hard for a replacement. However Liuzzi and his staff didn't agree and I haven't seen enough evidence to say who is right or wrong on the question of the break.

However, it should have been cleared up much earlier - there was no excuse for waiting until late January to do the removal. Even I, as a Force India support, agree that was wrongful handling of the situation.

  • Alianora La Canta12/04/2011 at 13:12

don't get me wrong alia, i like force india as a team and i like two of their drivers, but this announcement is nothing more than vijay saving face (again). i shall blog something about it later.

I don't see any way in which this saves face. If Vijay were face-saving, he'd have implemented the scheme about 18 months ago when the Indian supporters were screaming for it...

I don't see any way in which this saves face. If Vijay were face-saving, he'd have implemented the scheme about 18 months ago when the Indian supporters were screaming for it...

the focus at the opening gp will be squarely on vijay and there will be a lot of questions about why neither home driver is on his books, even as a test driver.

this is a diversionary tactic, nothing more.

  • Mr C12/04/2011 at 13:17

I don't see any way in which this saves face. If Vijay were face-saving, he'd have implemented the scheme about 18 months ago when the Indian supporters were screaming for it...

To be fair the only indian i know who is interested in f1 is in the news stand by my office. He thinks both Karun and Narin are hopeless.

He cares way more about how force india does than either of them when i chat to him

Not sure Karun has the reputation in india he does in the UK?

  • Mr C12/04/2011 at 13:20

I dont think calling it 1 in a billion is the best name

3 in 1.2 billion has less of a ring to it :)

  • Alianora La Canta12/04/2011 at 13:20

by the way, force india supporters don't interest vijay, you're looking at the wrong people, he doesn't care.

I've seen team owners not care at all about fans (yes Spyker - and to some extent Midland - I mean you) and what Vijay's doing is pretty close to the opposite. He's not yet at EJ levels of caring but he's doing a good job of looking after the fan support base.

voters and people who buy beer are probably the only people who vijay listens to.

He wouldn't be after voters, seeing as he left parliament in the 2008 elections. Beer-buyers (and plane-passengers) are people he'd be interested in, but he thrives on supporters. He likes to be liked :)

  • Nick12/04/2011 at 13:22

3 in 1.2 billion has less of a ring to it :)

    :D haha

  • Alianora La Canta12/04/2011 at 13:23

    what's the logical answer?

Better drivers falling over themselves to get on the team. There was already one decent driver too many on the books at the start of the year without Vijay complicating things by getting an extra one (I doubt Vijay will think Narain's improved enough since 2008 to merit a seat). If you think the Liuzzi situation was bad, think what it would have been like if two drivers' contracts were broken in the same off-season (di Resta had a contract to be a tester) or if Karun had become team leader after half-a-season of GP experience (and a contract had been broken).

  • Alianora La Canta12/04/2011 at 13:23

  • RubberGoat12/04/2011 at 13:29

Not necessarily. One can inspire the many, even if the one ultimately fails. It's a proven method of encouraging mass participation.

  • Pat W12/04/2011 at 13:32

You can never have too much inspiration. Besides, it's easier to talk to an Indian driver in the process of succeeding than an already-succeeding Indian team, especially if the team lives on the other side of the planet.

Sounds very wasteful to me. Is there nothing more scientific?

Between that and dealing with solicitors dipped in absurdity, I need a drink.

  • Lukeh12/04/2011 at 15:29

For some strange reason, our IT department have decreed that I need six different approvals from different levels of IT management, including the Vice President of the IT division.

    That is pretty Bill Lumbergh-esque

After seeing Lukeh mention somewhere (here? Facebook?) about Creme Egg ice creams I bought a pack, just had one, and they are nice.

I was just reading back and suddenly panicked that I owed a Daily for tomorrow... But I don't as it's Tuesday... Another positive :)

After seeing Lukeh mention somewhere (here? Facebook?) about Creme Egg ice creams I bought a pack, just had one, and they are nice.

Are they less sickly than the real things?

I always think a Creme Egg is a good idea until about halfway through :)

  • Lukeh12/04/2011 at 16:30

Are they less sickly than the real things?

I think they are but it may be because they have a lovely ice cream taste to them, but of course they still have the creme egg-ness about them. But yes, as amazing as creme eggs are they do tend to come with a bit of health consciousness :)

  • Pat W12/04/2011 at 16:31

Are they less sickly than the real things?

Much less, that's balanced by the ice cream. I'm struggling to see the resemblance because Creme Eggs don't have chocolate chips on top of the cream... although maybe they should.

  • Christine12/04/2011 at 16:32

Race car engineering have some news on lotus:

apparently renault ran with 1malaysia branding on their car last weekend (because things were going to smoothly)

I think 1Malaysia is the thing started by the PM, and Tony is/was supposedly mates with the PM so he called his racing team 1Malaysia. I think I read that at Joe's a fair old while ago. I've no idea who the PM supports now.

would love to hear lou and others thoughts on this big picture: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/9455739.stm

looks more like heath massaging his ego with a "i got this shot an no-one else did", rather than being a particularly good photo. might just be me though.

in positive news, it's petrov's tyre, for christine :)

  • Christine12/04/2011 at 17:58

looks more like heath massaging his ego with a "i got this shot an no-one else did", rather than being a particularly good photo. might just be me though.

That's kind of the point of it, so it says.

  • Mr C12/04/2011 at 17:58

That's kind of the point of it, so it says.

The Formula 1 big picture showcases a side of a dramatic, visual sport that television cannot always portray.

    no?

  • Christine12/04/2011 at 17:59

    no?

    Didn't see that on TV.

  • Lukeh12/04/2011 at 18:01

looks more like heath massaging his ego with a "i got this shot an no-one else did", rather than being a particularly good photo. might just be me though.

I think that's what annoys me about the big picture sometimes. Darren heath captures some fabulous pictures but that's not my idea of capturing the weekend I suppose. I'd rather something that blows me away visually and reminds me of the weekend if they're doing it following each race weekend.

Interesting to see the tyre like that though don't get me wrong, and I think it'd be a bit better if they didn't use the same photographer every time but that's just me.

  • Christine12/04/2011 at 18:02

Interesting to see the tyre like that though don't get me wrong, and I think it'd be a bit better if they didn't use the same photographer every time but that's just me.

    Definitely that.

  • Christine12/04/2011 at 18:03

I prefer the tyre to something like this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/9438616.stm

There must be three billion pictures like that.

  • Mr C12/04/2011 at 18:07

I prefer the tyre to something like this: news.bbc.co.uk/sp…a_one/9438616.stm

that technically is a better picture though.

  • Lukeh12/04/2011 at 18:08

There must be three billion pictures like that.

Yeah I suppose you make a fair point. Again though with Paul Gilhan, I think his name was, you had some absolutely awesome photos of Melbourne that would've made the big picture from helicopters and stuff over the race but because it's restricted to Darren you only have his library. It kinda makes me sound like I'm hating on him but that's not the case, I just like to have variety and it would be a fine opportunity as well to share out a bit of credit to photographers on a very mainstream audience such as the BBC.

I feel like I'm explaining my point very badly #fail

As Amanda said in her daily it was 50 years ago today that Yuri Gagarin became the fist man to orbit the Earth and proved the sceptics who said man could not survive space wrong.

It is amazing how fast progress was made after that first flight that lasted for less than 2 hours and only completed one orbit.

Remember NASA wanted 7 years to produce the successor to the space shuttle which was little more than an upgraded Apollo. Within 8 years of Gagarin's flight they had produced the Mercury which took a single astronaut to space then the Gemini with two and finally Apollo which had 3 occupants.

It took only a couple of months over 8 years from Gagarin's flight to Neil Armstrong standing on the moon. That is incredible.

As a result of a computer glitch that delayed the launch 20 years to the day after Gagarin the space shuttle made its first launch. That degree of progress is incredible.

Compare the progress of those first 20 years with the utter stagnation of the 30 since and you can see why commercial space travel is long overdue.

I only found out a few minutes ago about Yuri's night. http://yurisnight.net/about/

I have come to the conclusion that I am interested in so many things that I can't possibly keep up with all of them.

Very much so, national agencies shouldn't be doing LEO cargo runs unless it is a sensitive/classified payload. As long as there are agreed safety standards which are the tightest known to man, any company should be allowed (and I guess there are since a lot of the national craft are built by commercial companies anyway). There probably needs to be a Space Traffic Control too. :)

Looks like diResta has been reading up on Bill Shankly. Shankly was the Scottish manager of Liverpool in the 60s and would always talk up the opposition. In those pre-internet days it was very difficult to get info on games that had happened the day before. Returning from one European trip Shankly went on at length about what a great team the opposition had been. Eventually he paused long enough for someone to ask the score. "We beat them 5-1"

Paul is going about things the right way.

The problem is that you have a straight then an uphill braking zone. That is just stupid. Gravity just shortens the braking distance. He really does need to be put up against a wall and shot. Then beaten up with rolled up Autosports

I got home to a message out of the blue from an ex-boyfriend I haven't been in contact with for years saying that he's thinking of me and hoped I had a beautiful day. What's up with that??

Sounds like he is hoping to get re-acquainted

Maybe. However, I think we are getting the full size mock up they have in Houston. It looks like a Shuttle without wings.

I hate the circuit design. The 3-D map has been around for months. The first corner make no sense and there are far too many corners

feeling a bit poorly tonight, so just a quick comment in regards to this

would love to hear lou and others thoughts on this big picture: news.bbc.co.uk/sp…a_one/9455739.stm

While i think it's a nice photo.. depth of field etc.. it holds pretty much no reference to the weekend, and is purely submitted to the bbc for the big picture for Darren to basically say 'look, yet again i'm getting shots no one else is.. look how great i am.'

I don't like that kinda attitude. if he had more to say about the image other than 'i'm so great' then that would be fine. I would much rather see one of his amazing more arty photographs that he takes over the weekend which look great and either picture a key driver in the race, or a key moment.. or just something big and impressive. Giving the bbc rubbish images like this doesn't help his profile.. and tbh suggests to me that he had a bit of a bad weekend for shots.. maybe all of his other shots were a bit samey?.. anyways.. i'm not a fan of the bbc big picture, i'd much rather see a selection of images by all types of people which are both visually beautiful and relevant to the news.. luckily such a thing exists. - http://www.f1bigpicture.com/

    :)

Beautifully said, Lou. From a non-photographer's point of view, this is illuminating, and put words to what I could not articulate. Thanks. :)
