It was a quiet day on Sidepodcast yesterday as we were (and are still) in the process of moving furniture about. There was some racing in the evening though, so plenty to keep you all occupied. Meanwhile, here are some of the things we're keeping an eye on:

  • Something to make Mr C happy, Takuma Sato is keeping his fingers crossed he can get a seat in Formula One next year, and with the expanded grid, it could be a possibility. He said that he has unfinished business in the sport and is talking with teams, but if he doesn't get a seat in F1, he'll look at another category of motorsport instead.
  • Bernie Ecclestone has swung the pendulum on the Donington debate again. Despite giving the circuit extension after extension on the deadline to confirm plans are in place, Bernie has admitted that it really doesn't seem likely the race can go ahead there - even if they come up with the required money.
  • Massa is all set to go for his test in the F2007 on Monday, after passing some pretty stringent medical tests this weekend. He also learned that his eye has fully healed after the damage at the Hungarian GP, which is fabulous news and let's hope he does okay behind the wheel again.

That's all for now. The comments will probably still be light from Mr C and myself for today, but we are still around if you need us, and we'll be back to regularly scheduled commenting as soon as possible.

Two favourite moments of the night:

    1) After perviosly pointing Guille towards my Wiki pic in advance, sensing a a lost tourist in the bar, I spotted him & shouted "Guille". He replied - You're not yellow!

    2) Trying to find the best transport solution for Nick, who needed to cross town, two people on opposing OS phones trawl the web. Guille waves a paper article in the air, to disdain, shouting "I have a map"

I wonder why him over trulli. perhaps they feel he has a better chance of finding another drive, or has already committed for another year and the team want trulli to have a nice goodbye

  • Dap11/10/2009 at 03:50

The huge crowd of Japanese fans could care less. I saw more Honda hats than lazuli, Williams and Toyota combined. I was the only one in earshot that gasped when he said it.

Watching Kazuki and Kamui talk - I think this isn't a surprise for Kamui. Also, took picture with Yamashina-san. He didn't answer any questions.

Morning, back from my holiday in the sun, had fun watching the GP last weekend in German and Spanish, and spent all last evening catching up with highlights of the race and BTCC! Just a shame I can't find full coverage of quali in Japan anywhere on the net, as I missed all of it :(

I liked it when I was 11 but I'm sure if I saw it now I'd say it hadn't aged well. The sequel on the other hand is the worst movie I've ever seen 10 minutes of. It was so painful I couldn't go on.

I think a few people might have got rid hid of him straight away after the crash. I gave up on that comp though a long time ago. I made a team...all that I remember is there were drivers in it.

Over here it was hard for me to find anything in english - i would watch things that i never would have watched anywhere else because i was a little desperate. But sometimes I still had to turn it off and go find some strange german variety show to watch instead - i understood less but it made more sense.

It is just not a good time to miss races, when you do not have a seat for next year. Personally I think he is bit too good for Toyota (rthar than the way Toyota see it). I just hope he does not have to take a seat in one of the new teams - that will be the end of his career.

Timo I think could be a very good reporter in his own language, attractive and entertaining. He is clearly an intelligent driver to manage his tyres so well in races. Wurz is just a hilarious guy.

When I couldn't understand any of the languages in my area, I would watch Wurz on austrian tv because he looked like along with his colleague, the team looked like they were enjoying himself, although I think it was monaco where they seemed to be about 4 kilometres away from the track. much like Jake and crew on the back of the boat...

You saw a lot of the humour when he was given a camera at this year's le Mans and told to take shot that interested him. Wurz would be awesome for a new F1 team though. I just think Timo is too good and to young in his career to go there.

  • Rich11/10/2009 at 10:07

Morning guys. Shame to hear about Timo, and dont hurt me RG but I wonder if that's it for his Toyota life...

I think Toyoto, either are simply to unsure about their future. If they can sign a star driver (basically only Kimi is available) then the future is secure, otherwise it is on hold. Honestly which drivers better than Timo and Jarno that are available? Possibly Rubens, but remember in 2007 he did not score a point, Sutil makes too many accidents, so they are really left with Nick and Kovy. In all honesty, and I am a huge fan of Nick (my #1 driver), but it will not be a huge improvement (I really like Kovy as a person). I cannot work out how good Kovy is as a driver, in the McLaren he seems to qualify well but just go backwards despite the KERS (even Badore gained at the start) and when he pushes makes too many mistakes. That is why I say Jarno and Timo are not such a bad team compared to what's available.

  • Rich11/10/2009 at 10:13

Got my fingers crossed he'll be fit/Toyota want him for Abu Dhabi

Don't kill me - but I suspect Timo will not race at Abu Dhabi - the team know what he can do so they would probably test alternatives. Nick sat out the last four races at Williams BMW under somewhat unclear conditions (well BMW were pulling out of Williams and setting their own team and taking Nick with them). Williams subsequently admitted regret over their actions. I stil have a feeling Nick might return to Williams.

It's a pity that Timo's got injured this badly. I'm sure he'd have got better results than Kamui will. Even though I'm having serious doubts as to whether Toyota will have a car to offer Timo next year, this won't help him get a seat anywhere else :(

I am reading Toyota is either going for bang (viz getting Kimi) or bust (no top driver to convince their board to continue). This would change in the unlikely event that Jarno wins this year.

  • Lukeh11/10/2009 at 12:39

Kimi should just ask Mika (Hakkinen.. :P) if he can use his helmet as his helmet is awesome. I have a feeling this is what's definitely holding him back.

Nor do I, Kimi is not a complete enough a driver to go to Toyota and build the team up for success like he who should not be mentioned. Of course there is another star (possibly two) still available.

It jut seems an odd injury for that kind of accident.

No-one is saying anything like that although you never can tell

Conspiracy theories seem to follow him, poor lad

  • Alison11/10/2009 at 17:25

No-one is saying anything like that although you never can tell

Yeah. I can't believe how rude Toyota have been about their drivers recently. I think they've been driving better than they have at any point over the past year.

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 17:25

on a scale of 1 to 10 how wild was Timo's accident

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 17:26

about the japanese driving for toyota i think it's most likely to be sakon yamamoto however ya spell it.

    It's Kobayashi

  • RG11/10/2009 at 17:26

Silly Timo. Are people suspicious it's imaginary again or is that paranoid?

I think its a real injury, why would you lie about an injury? Certainly Timo wouldn't accept them to do that would they.

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 17:26

on a scale of 1 to 10 how wild was Timo's accident

    It wasn't that bad really

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 17:26

    who is kobayashi?

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 17:27

like was it a touch or smack into wall or rollover or what?

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 17:27

I think its a real injury, why would you lie about an injury? Certainly Timo wouldn't accept them to do that would they.

Toyota may think that putting a Japanese driver in the car will encourage the board to sign off next year's budget

  • Bassano Clapper11/10/2009 at 17:27

on a scale of 1 to 10 how wild was Timo's accident

Didn't he admit that he made a mistake. Fairly hefty shunt though

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 17:28

    who is kobayashi?

He is the test driver. He drove on the Friday in Japan

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 17:28

like was it a touch or smack into wall or rollover or what?

Head on into a tyre barrier

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 17:28

dude the jap is kobayashi whoever he is.

  • Bassano Clapper11/10/2009 at 17:28

    who is kobayashi?

Toyota's reserve driver. Drove in Free Practice at Suzuka

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 17:28

Didn't he admit that he made a mistake. Fairly hefty shunt though

    It was his fault

  • Kathi11/10/2009 at 17:28

Toyota may think that putting a Japanese driver in the car will encourage the board to sign off next year's budget

I think a good result would impress them more and the chance of that are much higher with Glock, and like RG said what's in it for Glock?

  • Alison11/10/2009 at 17:28

I think its a real injury, why would you lie about an injury? Certainly Timo wouldn't accept them to do that would they.

It's hard though. They have their own team doctor. Probably puts them in a better position to pull things like that than any other team.

I'm not suggesting that's what happened. If anyone were to get away with it though, it'd be them.

  • RG11/10/2009 at 17:29

Toyota may think that putting a Japanese driver in the car will encourage the board to sign off next year's budget

    But would Glock allow it?

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 17:29

I think a good result would impress them more and the chance of that are much higher with Glock, and like RG said what's in it for Glock?

Glock would do a far better job.

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 17:30

    But would Glock allow it?

    Depends what his contract says

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 17:30

thank you steven and really the tire barrier is supposed to cushion the impact and plus the survival is supposed to help protect the driver so now i don't see how that's possible.

  • Bassano Clapper11/10/2009 at 17:30

Toyota may think that putting a Japanese driver in the car will encourage the board to sign off next year's budget

I think a good result would impress them more and the chance of that are much higher with Glock, and like RG said what's in it for Glock?

It won't hurt their chances of getting the budget signed off, especially if the Japanese public are behind him. That's what really counts

  • Kathi11/10/2009 at 17:31

It's hard though. They have their own team doctor. Probably puts them in a better position to pull things like that than any other team.

The diagnosis came from a hospital in Germany not from the team doctor

thank you steven and really the tire barrier is supposed to cushion the impact and plus the survival is supposed to help protect the driver so now i don't see how that's possible.

Meh. Accidents happen. People can fracture their skull tripping over their laces or they can have a shunt at 200mph and walk out of it unharmed.

  • Bassano Clapper11/10/2009 at 17:32

thank you steven and really the tire barrier is supposed to cushion the impact and plus the survival is supposed to help protect the driver so now i don't see how that's possible.

It's still rapid deceleration. The 'G' light came on warranting mandatory hospital visit

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 17:32

Timo has to allow for the good of the team and plus just a theory the japanese aren't really that good in F1 again just a theory what makes em he'll be any better.

  • Alison11/10/2009 at 17:32

The diagnosis came from a hospital in Germany not from the team doctor

Fair enough. Where's the press release?

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 17:33

thank you steven and really the tire barrier is supposed to cushion the impact and plus the survival is supposed to help protect the driver so now i don't see how that's possible.

He still hit it at high speed so he would have been chucked around the cockpit a bit.

  • RG11/10/2009 at 17:33

Fair enough. Where's the press release?

    I'm guessing this is it

It's just a light so it's just like Australian GP in 2001,schumi got into rollover and he was okay.

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 17:35

ok he got chucked around but he was belted i'm pretty sure and even if that didn't make any difference he couldn't have broken a vertabrae.

  • Alison11/10/2009 at 17:35

It's just a light so it's just like Australian GP in 2001,schumi got into rollover and he was okay.

The fact that people have walked out of far worse accidents has nothing to do with the fact that people can get injured in much less serious ones. There are so so many factors involved in whether someone gets hurt or not. You can't possibly predict it.

  • Bassano Clapper11/10/2009 at 17:37

Steven, there's a documentary on Hubble on BBC4 at 7pm

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 17:37

don't you think a not really that bad smack into the wall is a tad less serious than a rollover.

  • Bassano Clapper11/10/2009 at 17:37

The fact that people have walked out of far worse accidents has nothing to do with the fact that people can get injured in much less serious ones. There are so so many factors involved in whether someone gets hurt or not. You can't possibly predict it.

Like Massa injuring himself whilst sneezing in a lift :)

  • Bassano Clapper11/10/2009 at 17:38

ok he got chucked around but he was belted i'm pretty sure and even if that didn't make any difference he couldn't have broken a vertabrae.

    I disagree

  • RG11/10/2009 at 17:38

don't you think a not really that bad smack into the wall is a tad less serious than a rollover.

    Considering his injuries, no.

Christian Klien (#sorrymrsc) rolled over a few years back and he was fine.

  • Alison11/10/2009 at 17:38

don't you think a not really that bad smack into the wall is a tad less serious than a rollover.

Yes obviously. I think the potential for someone to die was much less in Timo's crash. Doesn't mean he couldn't have been injured in it though.

  • Bassano Clapper11/10/2009 at 17:39

don't you think a not really that bad smack into the wall is a tad less serious than a rollover.

    It depends, not necessarily

  • Kathi11/10/2009 at 17:39

don't you think a not really that bad smack into the wall is a tad less serious than a rollover.

I always thought rollovers are far less dangerous

  • Bassano Clapper11/10/2009 at 17:40

don't you think a not really that bad smack into the wall is a tad less serious than a rollover.

One has the energy dissipated over 10 sec or so. The other in a fraction of a second

  • Alison11/10/2009 at 17:40

Presumably the risk of spinal injury is increased in a head on crash. That's to do with being "rattled" around in the cockpit.

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 17:41

ok he got chucked around but he was belted i'm pretty sure and even if that didn't make any difference he couldn't have broken a vertabrae.

Seat belts stretch in a head on impact and the whiplash would have slammed him back against the seat

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 17:42

Steven, there's a documentary on Hubble on BBC4 at 7pm

Thanks. I will watch that on the iplayer later in the week

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 17:44

I always thought rollovers are far less dangerous

Depends. Pedro Diniz rolled over at the Nurburgring a few years ago and ripped his roll hoop off in the gravel trap. That could have been really nasty

  • Alison11/10/2009 at 17:45

Depends. Pedro Diniz rolled over at the Nurburgring a few years ago and ripped his roll hoop off in the gravel trap. That could have been really nasty

It's definitely a lot better than it used to be. I'm sure peoples helmets used to hit the ground when people rolled in the past.

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 17:46

yeah rollovers are worse there is the possibility of hurting your head or your skull.

  • Alison11/10/2009 at 17:47

yeah rollovers are worse there is the possibility of hurting your head or your skull.

You can't just say that though. I don't really want to talk about this anymore. I think you need to try to understand that it isn't a black/white serious/not serious accident distinction.

  • Bassano Clapper11/10/2009 at 17:47

yeah rollovers are worse there is the possibility of hurting your head or your skull.

It's not as simple as that. Statiscally, rollovers are probably less harmful in the modern era

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 17:48

i am just join me back on planet earth for a sec please.

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 17:49

It's definitely a lot better than it used to be. I'm sure peoples helmets used to hit the ground when people rolled in the past.

Go back far enough and the theory was that it was better to be thrown out of the car than stay in it. It's one of the problems with gravel traps that roll hoops dig in and the helmet can hit the ground

  • Bassano Clapper11/10/2009 at 17:49

i am just join back on planet earth for a sec please.

There's no problem. I think we're just trying to say, it's not as clear cut as you may think

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 17:54

Well the facts are right there when Schumi broke his leg all the brakes did were just kick up dirt since they locked. Here it is the same case I think if the brakes locked.Depending on how fast he was going his back injury probably wouldn't have been possible. And plus about the rollover thing I said there is a possibility i didn't say it was going to happen every time.

  • Bassano Clapper11/10/2009 at 17:57

    I give up

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 18:01

probably a slim possibility not a major one

  • Alison11/10/2009 at 18:01

oh come on i'm just saying.

I don't see why you have issues with the concept that stuff happens. No real reason for a lot of it. It just does.

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 18:01

Any word on how the move went?

All we know is Mr C enjoyed driving the white van so much that when they saw two Williams transporters possibly heading to Kemble he announced that he wants to drive one of those

What makes you think that Massa is still some way from a full recovery.

"Ferrari has put out a statement confirming that Felipe Massa will drive an F2007 Ferrari tomorrow at its Fiorano test track, but has stressed that together with the team, Massa has come to the conclusion that his best interests would be served by not trying to race again this season at the final event in Abu Dhabi."

    James Allen

Simply confirms what we knew already.

  • jackie/saltire11/10/2009 at 18:08

    I can't keep up she's so prolific

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 18:11

Simply confirms what we knew already.

I am glad he is not trying to rush back to race this season. Best to have a break and a load of pre-season testing. Coming back for the last race of the season would mean that if he had problems there would be no way of proving it was a one off for months.

  • jackie/saltire11/10/2009 at 18:11

I've got myself some "tablet" .. thats a kind of fudge for folks down south. I may make myself sick, yum!

I agree, but I am also still not 100% convinced that he will be right next year.

All we know is Mr C enjoyed driving the white van so much that when they saw two Williams transporters possibly heading to Kemble he announced that he wants to drive one of those

I did not know there were any roads on Rockall to drive white vans?

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 18:14

just put a lot of it in there and just like jam it real good in there.

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 18:15

dude come on he's fit now in March he'll be even better hopefully.

He has had a fractured skull and a brain injury. Sometimes people don't ever get back to the top of their game after that

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 18:16

I did not know there were any roads on Rockall to drive white vans?

I think they must have built an extension on to the rock. They saw the Williams transporters on the M4 so it must be a big extension

  • Rich11/10/2009 at 18:16

You never can tell until he gets back into racing.

It si going to be when he has to actually complete a fullrace that we will really know. My point is in a competitive way rather than circulating. Felipe has possibly the worst imaginable team mate next year to have to defend his driving results with.

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 18:16

true but he's testing now.And again just saying maybe in March which in 5 months he'll ready to race.

  • jackie/saltire11/10/2009 at 18:16

He has had a fractured skull and a brain injury. Sometimes people don't ever get back to the top of their game after that

I had a fractured skull many moons ago (excuse for being loopy!) .. anyway back on story I was told it would be 2 years before they knew for definite how much damage was done.

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 18:17

well his teammate will motivate him to drive faster I personally think.

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 18:18

Maybe it's a bit of a relief in an odd way. Not being able to live up to Fernando isn't an embarrassing thing. I know obviously he wants to be world champion. But at least this accident would give him a good excuse.

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 18:20

    She's right

I had a fractured skull many moons ago (excuse for being loopy!) .. anyway back on story I was told it would be 2 years before they knew for definite how much damage was done.

There have been a few drivers with serious injuries like that who after they retired said that even though they were back driving within months it was a couple of years before they felt right again

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 18:21

You make a good point Steven

  • Rich11/10/2009 at 18:21

I think they must have built an extension on to the rock. They saw the Williams transporters on the M4 so it must be a big extension

British Geography is not good but I thought M4 was somewhere Swindon way or on route to Somerset and and the Severn. That is long way from Rockall. Mr C also seemed to me to have a slight west country accent (my grandparent on the one side came from there).

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 18:22

While we would understand, a) would the p[ress understand and b) will Felipe's fans understand. I really wished Kimi had stayed at Ferrari - I think it would have been better for Felipe.

Thanks - so we know approximately where Sidepodcast HQ really is. Is Williams factory not in Oxfordshire?

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 18:25

Well we can safely say this,he's really gonna give it 110% next year.

Thanks - so we know approximately where Sidepodcast HQ really is. Is Williams factory not in Oxfordshire?

    Yes. Grove in Oxfordshire

  • jackie/saltire11/10/2009 at 18:27

    Yes. Grove in Oxfordshire

Well if you lived in Swindon you wouldn't want to admit to it

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 18:27

Well we can safely say this,he's really gonna give it 110% next year.

We don't even know if he is going to race next year yet. We still have to find out how the contents of his skull respond to being shaken about at Fiorano yet. Schumacher thought he was going to drive a few races ago but it didn't happen.

  • Chris11/10/2009 at 18:28

Thanks - so we know approximately where Sidepodcast HQ really is.

Not necessarily. When I drive from my parents house to my university I take the M4, but neither of them is anywhere near that road!

  • Rich11/10/2009 at 18:29

I know I should not, but I have an admission I am hoping that Alonso really struggles with the Ferrari and simply cannot get to grips with it (like Fisi and Luca). In contrast Felipe gets in and drives as if the accident never happened. I know it is a bit mean. Kimi can also have a few smug smiles.

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 18:30

yeah(sniffs in sadness)I was really gonna be glued to the

I live in SA but I have the perception that Swindon is business parks and suburbia on a largish scale.

  • Alison11/10/2009 at 18:33

You can't help but hope Felipe is fine. He's such a likable guy. I do think Ferrari deserve to get burned by the way they've treated Kimi.

  • jackie/saltire11/10/2009 at 18:34

I live in SA but I have the perception that Swindon is business parks and suburbia on a largish scale.

Ah, sorry. Swindon is okay, I have a friend who lives there, its a bit of a concrete jungle, or that's how I view it.

I would love to know how stoned the people who designed that were. What options were thrown out for that to be the best one?

I have heard of Spaghetti Junction but not the Magic Roundabouts - but Wiltshire is home to crop circles so clearly there is something special in the air that makes circles more prevalent than any where else and is necessary. Love the sign.

ps Wikipedia says In February 2008 The Times named Swindon as one of "The 20 best places to buy a property in Britain"

  • Alison11/10/2009 at 18:41

It would take the whole lesson to find an exit

I think that is how it works. You go round one then exit on to the next then the next etc

You can go round all the mini's in order or if you are feeling brave, go round one mini to the inner big one and then leave by another mini

Have you seen the magic roundabout? .. the road not the tv program?

  • Rich11/10/2009 at 18:43

Maybe it didn't include the category 'fun'.

It said to BUY property not to LIVE in said property!

  • Alison11/10/2009 at 18:43

I think that is how it works. You go round one then exit on to the next then the next etc

Presumably you don't jsut go round the outside of them all? That'd just be like a giant normal roundabout. I can see myself getting lost in the middle. How do you have enough signage to show people the way out?

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 18:44

You can go round all the mini's in order or if you are feeling brave, go round one mini to the inner big one and then leave by another mini

So there is a roundabout in the middle of all those minis. That is way more complex than the French concentric roundabouts.

  • jackie/saltire11/10/2009 at 18:44

It's 5 mini roundabouts all linked

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 19:09

Maybe I'll try and do some blogging

Do you have a subject in mind?

  • jackie/saltire11/10/2009 at 19:10

Do you have a subject in mind?

    Howdy!

  • Alison11/10/2009 at 19:16

Bleurgh. I don't want to go to work tomorrow. I'm so glad I came home this afternoon. I'd just be getting in now.

It's down to confidence I guess. I don't think I'm a good enough blogger to go look at this, it's cool

  • jackie/saltire11/10/2009 at 19:20

But, on the plus side, at least I haven't given up

  • Jon Waldock11/10/2009 at 19:22

    ooooh, Lou. Happy Birthday!!

Plugging doesn't mean you think your post will win the Pullitzer prize. It's just you letting us know that it is there.

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 19:22

    I don't think I'm a good enough blogger

I would disagree. I've not read your blog before but I just went & had a quick look at the ones on penalties & I'm going to go back & read them again because I think they're really interesting

  • jackie/saltire11/10/2009 at 19:24

    I know .. cringe

  • jackie/saltire11/10/2009 at 19:28

    That's a plug

The cringe is because it's like hearing your own voice in a podcast .. feels weird.

    Not that bad, is it?

  • Alison11/10/2009 at 19:29

Oooh it's a good article. You've been mean about my favourite German though.....

  • Kathi11/10/2009 at 19:29

    thank you

the only thing I think you could change is the link to the reference library I don't seem to be able to get there, although I'm a member of your forum.

  • RG11/10/2009 at 19:30

Oooh it's a good article. You've been mean about my favourite German though.....

and mine seems to be (incorrectly, i say) high up.

  • jackie/saltire11/10/2009 at 19:30

do you like hearing yourself on podcasts (even if you have enjoyed doing it?)

  • jackie/saltire11/10/2009 at 19:31

the only thing I think you could change is the link to the reference library I don't seem to be able to get there, although I'm a member of your forum.

and after finishing reading about the drivers you could check out what the teams have been up to right here

  • Pat W11/10/2009 at 19:31

    Hello.

  • Alison11/10/2009 at 19:31

and mine seems to be (incorrectly, i say) high up.

Vettel only had that huge grid drop after Australia because he was too polite.

  • Jon Waldock11/10/2009 at 19:32

do you like hearing yourself on podcasts (even if you have enjoyed doing it?)

first time i hated it, but you do get used to it

  • Jon Waldock11/10/2009 at 19:32

    Hello.

    evenin' sire

  • RG11/10/2009 at 19:32

do you like hearing yourself on podcasts (even if you have enjoyed doing it?)

No I don't. (Though I hardly ever speak so makes a small difference). But I always thought an online post was a good thing.

  • jackie/saltire11/10/2009 at 19:32

Vettel only had that huge grid drop after Australia because he was too polite.

That's true and I love Vettel .. but that's what the stewards decided and I was trying to be impartial

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 19:32

do you like hearing yourself on podcasts (even if you have enjoyed doing it?)

I found that once I had been on a few podcasts my voice didn't bother me any more.

  • Bassano Clapper11/10/2009 at 19:33

I found that once I had been on a few podcasts my voice didn't bother me any more.

  • jackie/saltire11/10/2009 at 19:34

I found that once I had been on a few podcasts my voice didn't bother me any more.

I have to say, even though I don't like the sound of me, I've thoroughly enjoyed the podcasts I've done, particularly the panels

  • Alison11/10/2009 at 19:36

That's true and I love Vettel .. but that's what the stewards decided and I was trying to be impartial

Fair enough :P I might forgive you. I've added your blog to my google reader (which I'm still majorly struggling to deal with) but I shall persevere.

Is there something else that might be easier for me to use? Some sort of desktop thing. I don't need a lot of functionality.

  • Kathi11/10/2009 at 19:36

I really enjoy reading other peoples blogs, I'm just not keen on plugging mine

I would plug Maverick's last post but I still don't understand it ;)

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 19:39

I have to say, even though I don't like the sound of me, I've thoroughly enjoyed the podcasts I've done, particularly the panels

The panels are so much fun I am sure they have helped a lot of people get past the sound of their own voice

  • Christine11/10/2009 at 19:40

I have to say, even though I don't like the sound of me, I've thoroughly enjoyed the podcasts I've done, particularly the panels

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 19:41

  • jackie/saltire11/10/2009 at 19:41

Hi Christine, how's the move going?

    Yay you survived :D

  • Christine11/10/2009 at 19:41

Hi Christine, how's the move going?

We are done for now. Exhausted, but it's going okay :)

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 19:42

    Christine,

Did you manage to stop white van man chasing the Williams transporters?

  • Alison11/10/2009 at 19:42

We are done for now. Exhausted, but it's going okay :)

Mr C given up on his manly phase?

  • Pat W11/10/2009 at 19:42

If ever I move it'll have to be during the off-season

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 19:42

what move. I missed out on a lot.

  • Christine11/10/2009 at 19:43

Did you manage to stop white van man chasing the Williams transporters?

I did. We had to return the van. Mr C was quite sad.

  • Rich11/10/2009 at 19:43

I really enjoy reading other peoples blogs, I'm just not keen on plugging mine

Yes but yours and Maverick's posts are both great. They actually analyse and are not just hot air and opinion.

  • Bassano Clapper11/10/2009 at 19:43

what move. I missed out on a lot.

Our Sidepodcast hosts are moving house

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 19:44

I did. We had to return the van. Mr C was quite sad.

You need to make sure he doesn't go and trade his car in for a van or a truck

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 19:44

    oh right.

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 19:45

well depending on what car it is trucks are manly especially hummers

  • Alison11/10/2009 at 19:45

You need to make sure he doesn't go and trade his car in for a van or a truck

Yeah. He was very keen about driving us to Spa in a bus. This might be an area of concern....

  • Christine11/10/2009 at 19:45

You need to make sure he doesn't go and trade his car in for a van or a truck

He may do. He also picked up a leaflet for a motorhome which concerns me.

  • Bassano Clapper11/10/2009 at 19:46

Yeah. He was very keen about driving us to Spa in a bus. This might be an area of concern....

Especially since he's had one good day of driving a lrge vehicle, he may have used all the good luck up on that front

  • jackie/saltire11/10/2009 at 19:46

Yeah. He was very keen about driving us to Spa in a bus. This might be an area of concern....

I have a bus licence lol

  • Rich11/10/2009 at 19:47

well depending on what car it is trucks are manly especially hummers

Interestingly in our part of the world women like the Hummers they feel safer in them!

  • Alison11/10/2009 at 19:47

I have a bus licence lol

Hahaha I have to take my minibus test next April when I get back.

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 19:47

He may do. He also picked up a leaflet for a motorhome which concerns me.

I bet you are glad you have just moved house when he did that. Had he found that before the move you could be living in one

  • Bassano Clapper11/10/2009 at 19:47

Interestingly in our part of the world women like the Hummers they feel safer in them!

Similar here, Range Rover = Chelsea Tractor

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 19:48

you need an individual license to drive a bus

  • RG11/10/2009 at 19:48

He may do. He also picked up a leaflet for a motorhome which concerns me.

I just watched the Top Gear episode with motorhome racing.

Yeah, I'd keep an eye on the motorhome.

  • Andy Taylor11/10/2009 at 19:48

I bet you are glad you have just moved house when he did that. Had he found that before the move you could be living in one

I suggest a classic VW camper

  • Christine11/10/2009 at 19:48

I bet you are glad you have just moved house when he did that. Had he found that before the move you could be living in one

I hadn't thought of that! That concerns me even more :)

  • jackie/saltire11/10/2009 at 19:48

I bet you are glad you have just moved house when he did that. Had he found that before the move you could be living in one

That would be amusing sitting on the ball on a bouncy motorhome floor trying to podcast

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 19:49

I suggest a classic VW camper

    Not a 45 foot Winnebago

  • Rich11/10/2009 at 19:49

Similar here, Range Rover = Chelsea Tractor

Also remember RHD Hummers are built/assembled in SA for the RHD global markets.

  • Kathi11/10/2009 at 19:49

What language has he written it in? you are our best liguist so if you don't understand it none of us will

I think he was describing chess moves

  • Andy Taylor11/10/2009 at 19:49

That would be amusing sitting on the ball on a bouncy motorhome floor trying to podcast

LPG and I used to do radio from an old mobile dentist's caravan.

  • Kathi11/10/2009 at 19:50

Oh it went so well for so long. Sorry Christine.

  • jackie/saltire11/10/2009 at 19:50

Also remember RHD Hummers are built/assembled in SA for the RHD global markets.

Why are Hummers so expensive, are they armour plated or something?

  • Bassano Clapper11/10/2009 at 19:50

Why are Hummers so expensive, are they armour plated or something?

    They're HUGE!

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 19:51

If u plan to sleep in there if say the house had to be checked for bugs i would prefer a winnebago

  • jackie/saltire11/10/2009 at 19:51

    They're HUGE!

    and not at all aerodynamic

  • Rich11/10/2009 at 19:51

Why are Hummers so expensive, are they armour plated or something?

Here they are not especially expensive comparatively, I do not see the appeal of them, monumentally ugly and heavy on petrol.

  • Alison11/10/2009 at 19:52

Why are Hummers so expensive, are they armour plated or something?

You almost need your bus licence to be allowed to drive one!

  • Christine11/10/2009 at 19:52

Oh it went so well for so long. Sorry Christine.

No probs, have fixed it :)

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 19:52

i think hummers are armor plated they're military vehicles or modeled to be military vehicles i.e. the humvees

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 19:52

I read recently that GM were going to sell Hummer of to the Chinese

  • Rich11/10/2009 at 19:53

You almost need your bus licence to be allowed to drive one!

They must be fun on British roads as I recall the country one were narrow and sort of wiggly.

  • jackie/saltire11/10/2009 at 19:53

You almost need your bus licence to be allowed to drive one!

It seems to be the more expensive your car, the more space you feel the need to occupy on the road. Merc drivers are the worst

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 19:53

no they better not sell em to them

  • jackie/saltire11/10/2009 at 19:54

LPG and I used to do radio from an old mobile dentist's caravan.

    challenging?

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 19:55

it'd be easier to understand if you're American or me but Hummer has always been an American brand always have always should be.

  • Bassano Clapper11/10/2009 at 19:55

no they better not sell em to them them

    It's nearly complete

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8300102.stm

  • Rich11/10/2009 at 19:56

i think hummers are armor plated they're military vehicles or modeled to be military vehicles i.e. the humvees

Certainly the ones you buy are not armour plated. The originally converted military could have been.

The RHD ones in Britain post 2007 would have been built here in SA.

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 19:56

no they better not sell em to them them

Looks like it is a done deal

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 19:56

    no no no no no

  • Kathi11/10/2009 at 19:57

No probs, have fixed it :)

    thank you.

    And good night everyone.

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 19:57

something always gives me the notion that they are.

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 19:57

it'd be easoer to understand if you're American or me but Hummer has always been an American brand always have always should be.

GM is in a mess so they have to sell off several brands to make cash.

  • Bassano Clapper11/10/2009 at 19:57

    G'night Kathi

  • jackie/saltire11/10/2009 at 19:58

    And good night everyone.

    Night Kathi

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 19:58

    Good night Kathi

  • Bassano Clapper11/10/2009 at 19:58

GM is in a mess so they have to sell off several brands to make cash.

I hope Saab goes to someone with some sense, they've messed that brand up too

  • RG11/10/2009 at 19:58

    And good night everyone.

    Bye kathi.

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 19:58

the chinese are gonna ruin it de americanize a true american brand.

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 19:59

our tax dollars when to them and that ain't enough!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Alison11/10/2009 at 20:01

the chinese are gonna ruin it de americanize a true american brand.

Obviously it isn't profitable at the moment though. It's sell it or be bankrupt....

  • RG11/10/2009 at 20:01

By the way, mentioned this yesterday but hardly any one was around. Spent time on this yesterday. So, no excuse to get a Glock quesiton wrong ever.

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 20:01

I hope Saab goes to someone with some sense, they've messed that brand up too

They made SAAB an Opel/Vauxhall variant rather than an individual company that was worth something

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 20:01

saab better go to ford it'll make more sense

  • jackie/saltire11/10/2009 at 20:02

By the way, mentioned this yesterday but hardly any one was around. Spent time on this yesterday. So, no excuse to get a Glock quesiton wrong ever.

Wow RG that's a huge amount of work. It'll take me a while to read and digest but thank you :D

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 20:03

Obviously it isn't profitable at the moment though. It's sell it or be bankrupt....

The whole of GM isn't profitable and the first thing any business does is unload non-core business. Hummer is an irrelevant business to GM and there is no way any Amrican company is going to buy it so either it goes to China or the brand disappears

  • Rich11/10/2009 at 20:03

By the way, mentioned this yesterday but hardly any one was around. Spent time on this yesterday. So, no excuse to get a Glock quesiton wrong ever.

You pipped me to the post, I was preparing a posting all about Timo. I will start on my Driver musical chairs market.

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 20:03

sell it back to am general

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 20:03

saab better go to ford it'll make more sense

Ford are broke too. SAAB has nothing in common with Ford

  • RG11/10/2009 at 20:04

Wow RG that's a huge amount of work. It'll take me a while to read and digest but thank you :D

I was cursing the fact he had such a long and quite successful history.

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 20:04

That looks like a lot of work RG

  • Bassano Clapper11/10/2009 at 20:04

saab better go to ford it'll make more sense

No, it needs to go to someone who can deal with an individual brand, not homogenised blandness

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 20:05

nice job rg and sell it to daimler chrysler then

  • Rich11/10/2009 at 20:06

sell it back to am general

does it exist? I think the Hummer's sell by date is well and truly over so I think the Chinese are rather welcome to dabble in tasteless automobiles.

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 20:06

again sell it to am general they had hummer originally.

  • Rich11/10/2009 at 20:07

I was cursing the fact he had such a long and quite successful history.

He does indeed, but then when I research Nelsinho he had a spectacular start to his career - just went very wrong in F1.

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 20:08

again sell it to am general they had hummer originally.

Why would they build a business and sell it off at a nice profit then buy it back when no-one wants the cars?

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 20:08

look the chinese should stick to IT stuff when it comes to cars leave it to Japan,America, and most of Europe.

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 20:09

right but again easier to understand if American.

  • Bassano Clapper11/10/2009 at 20:09

look the chinese should stick to IT stuff when it comes to cars leave it to Japan,America, and most of Europe.

I'll make sure I tell them that over afternoon tea tomorrow

  • Alison11/10/2009 at 20:09

right but again easier to understand if American.

    Why?

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 20:11

look the chinese should stick to IT stuff when it comes to cars leave it to Japan,America, and most of Europe.

You think China with a billion people is not going to build cars? China is going to be involved in every industry on the planet and it is going to domniate most of them

  • Rich11/10/2009 at 20:11

look the chinese should stick to IT stuff when it comes to cars leave it to Japan,America, and most of Europe.

I think the Hummer will still hold appeal to less sophisticated markets, like Asiatic, Middle East and Africa -so I think they should manufacture them. Also forgetting India is a huge car manufacturer, and Mexico and Brazil are significant.

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 20:12

hehehe funny Bassano but anyway like i keep saying Hummer is a true American brand like Dodge,Ford, and Chevy it doesn't make any sense.

  • Bassano Clapper11/10/2009 at 20:12

hehe funny Bassano but anyway like i keep saying Hummer is a true American brand like Dodge,Ford, and Chevy it doesn't make any sense.

It's business, sense doesn't come into it. Money does

  • Pat W11/10/2009 at 20:13

hehe funny Bassano but anyway like i keep saying Hummer is a true American brand like Dodge,Ford, and Chevy it doesn't make any sense.

Now you know how we felt in the 80s and 90s.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)11/10/2009 at 20:13

Hey Jackie, do you still need those penalty stats?

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 20:13

well pr is part of it right and we're the public so they gotta convince that this is good.

  • Rich11/10/2009 at 20:14

You think China with a billion people is not going to build cars? China is going to be involved in every industry on the planet and it is going to domniate most of them

In 20 years time many of use will be driving Chines cars like we drive Japanese today. I drive a European built car and the choice was based on it being the greenest car you can buy.

  • jackie/saltire11/10/2009 at 20:14

Hey Jackie, do you still need those penalty stats?

If you have them Gavin I might do part 3 :D

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 20:14

hehe funny Bassano but anyway like i keep saying Hummer is a true American brand like Dodge,Ford, and Chevy it doesn't make any sense.

There is a simple choice. National protectionism or participation in the global economy. If you want to sell to the world you have to deal with other parts of the world taking over your companies

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 20:15

no this is terrible i have to work in the rice fields now.

  • Bassano Clapper11/10/2009 at 20:15

well pr is part of it right and we're the public so they gotta convince that this is good.

    No they don't

  • Alison11/10/2009 at 20:15

well pr is part of it right and we're the public so they gotta convince that this is good.

No they err don't. That's the point. The future of automobile industries is in exploiting eastern markets.

  • Bassano Clapper11/10/2009 at 20:15

well pr is part of it right and we're the public so they gotta convince that this is good.

    No they don't

These companies are fighting for survival

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 20:16

i understand that but i'm very patriotic and to me this isn't right. And i'm very defensive of our military just saying.

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 20:16

In 20 years time many of use will be driving Chines cars like we drive Japanese today. I drive a European built car and the choice was based on it being the greenest car you can buy.

I don't think it will take 20 years. As soon as the Chinese and Indians get serious they are going to blow everyone else out of the water

  • Bassano Clapper11/10/2009 at 20:16

no this is terrible i have to work in the rice fields now.

Steady on Edgar, don't go down that route please

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 20:16

no this is terrible i have to work in the rice fields now.

You need to move then because you can't grow rice in America

  • Pat W11/10/2009 at 20:16

i understand that but i'm very patriotic and to me this isn't right. And i'm very defensive of our military just saying.

What has the latter point got to do with anything we've discussed?

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 20:17

    ok ok fine.

  • Alison11/10/2009 at 20:17

i understand that but i'm very patriotic and to me this isn't right. And i'm very defensive of our military just saying.

The whole basis of your economy is founded on the free market. Seems like an odd time to start objecting to it.

  • Bassano Clapper11/10/2009 at 20:17

i understand that but i'm very patriotic and to me this isn't right. And i'm very defensive of our military just saying.

It's modern economics. We're not saying it's right, just that it's here

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)11/10/2009 at 20:17

Hey Jackie, do you still need those penalty stats?

If you have them Gavin I might do part 3 :D

Here you go. My good friend Brian Lawrence from F1NGers got them for me ;)

  • Bassano Clapper11/10/2009 at 20:17

What has the latter point got to do with anything we've discussed?

    Hummers were originally miltary vehicles

I don't think it will take 20 years. As soon as the Chinese and Indians get serious they are going to blow everyone else out of the water

I think China are now the 2nd or 3rd biggest economy by GDP? It was only ion about 2005 they overtook the UK for 5th.

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 20:17

i just wanted to say that but again very patriotic and this isn't right.I'm like a rock can't convince to change my mind

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 20:18

i understand that but i'm very patriotic and to me this isn't right. And i'm very defensive of our military just saying.

So American companies should never be allowed to buy another foreign business in case the locals don't like it? Are you going to build walls round the border and not let anyone in?

China and India are very soon going to be the biggest markets in the world and America is going to become number three if it is lucky

  • Bassano Clapper11/10/2009 at 20:19

i just wanted to say that but again very patriotic and this isn't right.I'm like a rock can't convince to change my mind

Nothing wrong with patriotism, but it doesn't pay the bills

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 20:19

and the chinese are gonna make crappy military vehicles. They never won a war because of their military.More people are gonna die!

  • Rich11/10/2009 at 20:19

There is a simple choice. National protectionism or participation in the global economy. If you want to sell to the world you have to deal with other parts of the world taking over your companies

America cannot really continue to protect its auto-industry. I think it tried and was unsuccessful. It seems, as an outsider, they simply were not building cars their clients continued to want. So Japanese and European brands made a successful offensive into the market. Sadly American imports into SA have been mostly ridiculed for poor build quality, especially their interiors.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)11/10/2009 at 20:19

i just wanted to say that but again very patriotic and this isn't right.I'm like a rock can't convince to change my mind

Exactly. It's just Rover all over again isn't it?

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 20:20

i just wanted to say that but again very patriotic and this isn't right.I'm like a rock can't convince to change my mind

So you don't believe in the free market? That makes you unAmerican doesn't it?

  • Bassano Clapper11/10/2009 at 20:20

Exactly. It's just Rover all over again isn't it?

    Precisely

And goodbye Vauxhall too, if that deal with Opel is what I think it is.

Ironically the US carmakers could learn something from their own divisions in other parts of the world. I think Ford has finally got it, they are launching the Fiesta in the US.

I think we may be fanning the flames here a bit guys...

  • Edgar11/10/2009 at 20:22

well it's true america makes crappy cars and we want the foreign stuff but this affecting our military too.

  • Rich11/10/2009 at 20:22

    Hummers were originally miltary vehicles

Only way back - they are simply inflated normal vehicles. In the African bush they are fairly useless where the Land-cruiser is King. Landrovers are capable off-roaders but have a tendency to break down rather a lot.

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 20:22

Most Americans who buy American cars do so because they want to buy American and not because the cars are any good. How many American models sell anywhere else in the world?

well it's true america makes crappy cars and we want the foreign stuff but this affecting our military too.

No it's not. The military are not going to buy from China. There is no military use anywhere that needs Hummers. There are plenty of better options

  • jackie/saltire11/10/2009 at 20:24

    haha

  • Rich11/10/2009 at 20:27

Ironically the US carmakers could learn something from their own divisions in other parts of the world. I think Ford has finally got it, they are launching the Fiesta in the US.

My understanding is Fiesta, Focus and Ka are entirely European, and while not popular in SA are actually rather good vehicles. I think Ford's overall plan is to introduce these to the USA. There was talk that Chrysler would sell its own shares to FIAT so that it could build FIAT sourced cars in the USA - but I think it might have fallen through. Next generation BMWs are all likely to be smaller engined but turbo boosted to comply with environmental legislation.

  • Bassano Clapper11/10/2009 at 20:27

SO! Bassano, what have YOU been up to THIS weekend!!???

Recovering, talked into joining the gang for drinks with Guille (thoroughly nice chap)

Decided GP didn't know what she was talking about and started anti-biotics anyway

    Feeling much better now :)

There are two types of browser IE and non IE. Designing for IE is a pain as it has the most compatibility issues but it captures about 2/3 of the market. Almost all other browsers seem to be compatible with each other.

    Linux is under-rated especially Pardus.

I went for separate mattress and bed. One for comfort, one for style

Unfortunately the out-of-town shops want £300 for a mattress and £300 for a frame. So I am willing to compromise on a frame for a while - however, IKEA seems to have some good-looking stuff for considerably less money.

  • Bassano Clapper11/10/2009 at 20:36

Boooo! I'm going to save up for a new desktop. I'm up for a mac conversion. I grew up using macs. My first ever PC left me without internet access for 4 months....

I'll be upgrading my iMac soon

  • James11/10/2009 at 20:36

i would do...but if you open my site in firefox the links menu disapears ;)

    you tried using these? http://www.quirksmode.org/css/condcom.html

No, I'm just rubbish at it. And I hate programming and coding.

:( what are you trying to do?

You can only ever use IKEA bedding then though or unfitted sheets. Deviously they don't use standard sizing.

I went to a cheap carpentary wholesale place and then had a mattress delivered from some high street bed store

Don't get a cheap mattress, get one that suits you

They are a little over-rated unless you get a good deal in terms of price. In my one lab we got a good price and I have iMacs, but now the price premium is too much.

Also I ment to ask you - do you have a 150X150 size banner / pic for your site. Redesigned mine over the weekend and wanted to include a link to yours in a sidebar (have a look at F1TP and you'll see what I mean).

If you can drop me a mail with a file I'll upload one tomorrow...

No question about that - a couple had to have their hard drives replaced fairly soon - became panel heaters. Mac OSX is good, but in all honesty a KDE desktop is fairly awesome to. I used Pardus since it especially stable (originally a Gentoo-based distro) and incredibly easy to install and maintain updates.

For future labs (which all have a space issue) I have decided to use SFF Shuttles and 23inch 1900 resolution monitors and Pardus (Windows will be supplied via virtualizing). A Shuttle with 1500 Gbyte drive and Quad 2 Core processor and 4 Gb ram is half the price of an entry-level iMac 20 inch.

I have been trying a couple of different specs - also very easy to upgrade since they are bought bare-bones and I assemble them myself with the processors, HD, DVD writer and memory. Lots of ports - 6 USB, parallel, serial and old printer (still have software dongles than use these).

I used to work in IT, I've had a year out in a new job and I'm amazed at:

The blog is called 'Making Up The Numbers" - but it's too long as a blog address...

Ya think? Or is that the rules?

  • Lukeh11/10/2009 at 21:23

If I were Gavin, I'd change it from making up the numbers to F1 numbers since that's the title of his blog.

Gavin said before it's because of the URL why its f1numbers

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)11/10/2009 at 21:23

#MFC Some journalist moaning about watching football on a computer...

If they used it as a test case, the article and comments imply that it failed.

But then again, the iPlayer is really popular and there are loads of people like us who watch TV online - but I guess the mainstream don't like the idea?

  • jackie/saltire11/10/2009 at 21:23

    ah okay, sorry

  • Lukeh11/10/2009 at 21:23

But then again, the iPlayer is really popular and there are loads of people like us who watch TV online - but I guess the mainstream don't like the idea?

It was a live event, and from what I heard of it, it wasn't the same as it being on tv at all.

  • jackie/saltire11/10/2009 at 21:24

I missed that part  but I likes the big avatar thing

£11.99 for an England match though... only available online...

It;s just my opinion this but even if England have qualified, there's now at the national team of the country's most popular sport should only be available like that. Have always thought England matches should be BBC/ITV, or what is considered terrestrial TV now, rather than sky or like that.

  • RG11/10/2009 at 21:25

Wonder if there was any buffering?

With the amount of people I'd expect watching it, I'd suspect so.

  • Lukeh11/10/2009 at 21:25

It;s just my opinion this but even if England have qualified, there's no way the national team of the country's most popular sport should only be available like that. Have always thought England matches should be BBC/ITV, or what is considered terrestrial TV now, rather than sky or like that.

The reports I heard last night was that a lot of people paid £12 each to watch it and the service worked. Quite why anyone would spend that kind of money for a stream is beyond me

  • Adie11/10/2009 at 21:31

I totally agree with that. Scotland had a friendly game in Japan on BBC1 but all the real games are on Setanta and the like. They will all suffer in the long term

  • Lukeh11/10/2009 at 21:32

The thing that astounds me is that it offered nothing new - it wasn't HD, it didn't have anything exclusive, it didn't reward the customer even... it was just a bog standard run of the mill international qualifier with pundits, average quality strea,, and that's it. No different to TV.

  • Bassano Clapper11/10/2009 at 21:33

From Ofcom: Group A events and highlights of Groub B events must be offered to qualifying free to air broadcasters, but they are not under any obligation to bid for them.

Does that mean the free-to-air channels get first dibs but no guarantee that they will get them?

  • Andy Taylor11/10/2009 at 21:56

Does that mean the free-to-air channels get first dibs but no guarantee that they will get them?

Basically, yes. The rights holders have to offer them, broadcasters don't have to buy.

  • Pat W11/10/2009 at 21:57

Does that mean the free-to-air channels get first dibs but no guarantee that they will get them?

I think in most cases if a FTA bids and a non-FTA bids, the FTA would generally get it. Ofcom generally frowns on the non-FTA getting it if there is a choice, so it may not necessarily go to the highest bidder.

  • Andy Taylor11/10/2009 at 21:58

I think in most cases if a FTA bids and a non-FTA bids, the FTA would generally get it. Ofcom generally frowns on the non-FTA getting it if there is a choice, so it may not necessarily go to the highest bidder.

    Hey, at least you're in

  • Amy11/10/2009 at 22:04

    :(

I think the problem is all you can select is 'best available' and maybe their definition of best is different to mine :D

There is also the fact that if you were willing to go to both mens and womens finals they have had tickets on sale for a week so they may have sold all the best ones to those people, or to the travel places that do packages.

Either way I'll be there and that is cooooool.

  • Amy11/10/2009 at 22:05

    Hey, at least you're in

Been working on a blog post discussing the Silly Season. A lot of rumours and lots of options as John Howett noted.

Here are some of things I will discuss in a too long post (almost 3000 words

Would Kim sign a pact for "no drinking and driving" and would the public buy it given his reputation as liking alcohol?

Would Frank Williams hire Rubens when he so publically criticised Rubens for his blah blah blah rant?

How will Toro Rosso run without Red Bull parent company support?

Will Brawn cough up the dough for Jenson and his team manager?

    Who will hire Heikki?

  • Steven Roy11/10/2009 at 22:17

I'm not going to bed. I can't sleep without Michel :(

You are going to stay awake until they make more programs?

    Humbugs

  • Amy11/10/2009 at 22:17

my Australian Open just got really expensive because when my ticket arrived I realised I had somehow managed to buy for the wrong day and then I had to buy for the right day as well.

Is it possible to be worse than they are at present - Japan was an expensive outing?

It's just a shouting match between 2 women to see who can make the most noise...

Therefore i'm now putting tickets to the nightly drunken shouting match that goes on outside my window...and what makes it better than the womens final is that there are people of all genders and more than 2 of them!!

    £20 a pop

They've always been terrible at driver management, but can be good at race strategy etc. That side can get worse.

  • Rich11/10/2009 at 22:27

Just cos he likes to drink doesn't mean he'd drive under the influence

Not so much whether he would it is how it will be perceived by the public ad the sponsors? I think it was James Allen who alluded to stepping over him in a Hotel one morning while in paralytically drunk state.

the good thing about being up so early to buy the (wrong) tickets is I have had time for a shower and now I'm having a lovely bowl of porridge and I still have 15 minutes before I have to leave the house.
