With the Spanish Grand Prix over, there's a lull in the action before Monaco in two weeks time. It's good for us as we get a rest, but there'll still be news to discuss, such as:

  • Bourdais has said that he was lucky not to have had a bigger accident yesterday, as he could have ended up rolling the car. Both Toro Rosso boys consider the accident a surprise, as the first thing Buemi knew of it was seeing Bourdais' tyre, while the latter couldn't do anything as all the cars in front of him just stopped. Will the team find someone to blame though?
  • Vettel says his bad start cost him the victory, particularly the fact that Massa got past him so he spent the entire race staring at the wrong end of a Ferrari. Will he be another driver going back to the team and saying we need that KERS?
  • Button says Brawn have regained the advantage of the field now, which I find a bit odd because I'm not sure they ever lost it? He's won four out of the five races there have been, so I can't see them having been behind at any point.

That'll do it for now. Please keep the excellent thoughts coming, and let us know what you're doing the day after the race before. As ever, I'll see you in the comments.

Brawn have seemingly been unchallenged, but Red Bull have been very close, or possibly even quicker than them, on raw pace over the last two races. Strategy, luck and track position have been the difference.

JA says on his blog that Brawn will dominate Monaco because they are the fastest in the tight and twisty stuff, using Sector 3 in Spain as evidence. I believe that Red Bull's strength is traction (due to their suspension design?) and that they will challenge Brawn for the win in the principality. They just need to fuel light enough to get pole, and then pray for a safety car free first section of the race so they can build up a significant lead.

I would really like to see my fellow countryman, Mark Webber, get a win. But I also want Lewis to have a good race. Maybe having KERS will help. I'm going to go against popular opinion and say that it will do what it is supposed to (help with overtaking) and that a long fuelled strategy will help McLaren to the top 5.

    Ouch. Are you awake now?

  • Rich11/05/2009 at 07:36

Will the team find someone to blame though?

Neither STR driver is to blame - they were in the wrong place at the wrong time - I still feel sorry for the team though and especially SwisSeb who's new helmet design will have a Bourdais tyre trend across the top.

Vettel says his bad start cost him the victory, particularly the fact that Massa got past him so he spent the entire race staring at the wrong end of a Ferrari.

I like DeSeb, but he needs to realise it is racing, Felipe was in front, don't complain if you cannot pass him on track and use the pit stops to do it like Schumacher senior did.

Button says Brawn have regained the advantage of the field now

Since Australia (where they were at an advantage) I really think Brawn has not really had any performance advantage over Red Bull. I think Red Bull with more mechanical grip will be better than Brawn at Monaco. Mark did brilliantly to get onto the podium, but the car was seriously quick at Spain and I am not sure they need that rear diffuser.

I was surprised at how poor the Toyotas went yesterday, first time that Timo did not score points. I wonder if we will see the team fade during the season? Hopefully not as Timo is my man (but I have to share him with RG).

Alonso did well with the whale shark, even if he did ultimately cause the race pile-up at the start. Renault, although doing better than last year, are still far from winning races. PK had an exciting race if you were one of the prospective drivers looking for a Renault F1 seat this year.

Hey Ferrari you starting to have a car that fits the name, now pay your dues to Lady Luck. Felipe yet again gets raised in my assessment. He could have been so much more negative about the team etc given that he was sniffing fumes and conceding positions at the end of the race. Obviously this year he is not going to be in contention for the WDC but hopefully the car will improve in performance (and reliability). Kimi was not able to get past Nick so he was going nowhere fast and then the Ferrari gremlins got the better of the mechanical bits. Was your KERS working - still not sure?

BMW Sauber - still slow - they must owe a debt of gratitude to Force India, because without them they would be the slowest on the grid (yes I think STR are better). Their car still resembles a stranded blobfish in a tankful of Great Whites, Bull, Tiger and Zambezi sharks (not forgetting the pair of whale sharks. Nick sort of got a birthday present with scoring two points and beating a Schumacher record (officially now Mr Finisher). Bobby-K when are you going to score me some points - you are now too cheap to exchange in my Fantasy Team. The BMW Sauber pit crew should get bonuses and cub-cakes as they won the points of the day with slick pit stops for Nick (possibly Nick shared his birthday cake).

Williams are still smoke and mirrors - look good in practice for the sponsors (what's left) but race pace is not there. Nico is a nice guy but I am expecting more on the track, somehow it is just not there. For Kaz another poor race and another reason for Williams to start negotiating with Toyota to swap to their reserve driver who will really push Nico. If STR/Red Bull can have three Sebs why can't Williams have two Nicos?

The consistent and progressive development for Macca came to a somewhat abrupt halt. Mr Integrity/Diplomacy slags off the team rather too publicly. What he fails to see is that he is part of the team. Macca have the best technology and usually produce the best cars on the F1 grid so it is his job to help develop the car. Possibly it was a good time for the team's Fairy Godfather to bid farewell. Kovy seems to have inherited some Webbo luck, possibly he needs to break a leg at the season end to restore his karma.

I admit it, I love Force India's podcasts - especially when interviewing Ian Phillips, their optimism is so refreshing and they are genuinely faster than they have ever been and they have closed the gap to everyone else. Sadly with all this hard work they are still the grid's rear-gunners but at least their car do not look like a blobfish out of water which both finished last in the previous race!

My final conclusion Britain does indeed have a superstar on the F1 track, but he is not from Stevenage but from Somerset. I know I will spark indignation, but Lewis has never put in five consecutive races of the class that Jenson has this season.

I'm disappointed with GPWeek's latest issue.

Their cover is Rubens saying: "I won't follow team orders anymore."

But if you took the full context of his statement, what he actually means is that he'd quit if he were forced to follow them, but he doesn't think Ross is doing it.

Goodness - even they do it now? :O

  • Journeyer11/05/2009 at 08:25

    Other interesting news:

Bernie says there are TWO US entries. It looks like someone's leaving the IRL... but who?

GPWeek is thinking it's Penske. I'm thinking it's Andretti Green - and they'd have a lineup of Danica-Marco. Ganassi has also been floated as the possible mystery entry.

    Interesting, interesting indeed.

Still have my comments on the race in moderation - but I thought this article on what John Surtees has to say about the merits of Lewis and Jenson makes an interesting read. Basically he said Jenson blew what little talent he had and that...

“Lewis is someone we’ve desperately needed in British sport for years.

“Frankly, we’ve been applauding second-raters because we’ve been devoid of anyone else.”

Everywhere is doing this, the BBC has the exact same thing. Morning Lukeh!

Yeah it's a bit strange - I seemed to have missed the memo that it was GMM day today?

I have just listened to 5Live Chequered Flag and Anthony Davidson's opinion is that Rubens thinks it was the strategy that lost him the race because he felt that he gave his all, and that the team took decisions based on what they thought was best at the time...

The simple fact is that Jenson made it work better and Rubens was a bit unlucky. He'll get his chances, don't you worry about it! ;)

and Rubens win in Monaco will be heaps better because thats the win every driver wants ;)

  • Journeyer11/05/2009 at 09:11

I don’t think Andretti Green - Michael still has bad memories of 1993.

But I think Mario will be pushing him to go for it anyway. Michael may have been a bad F1 driver, but he's been a great team boss. Marco is a solid, if unspectacular, F1 prospect. And, like Senna, the mere mention of the Andretti name makes potential sponsors everywhere drool. US + Andretti is an unbeatable marketing combo, even better than the Senna name.

Penske on the other hand have been in F1 before and I believe they won a race… and TBH, Penske have been compared to an F1 team before because they are so good at what they do. But why would they leave Indycars?

Quite frankly, because IndyCar is a sinking ship. Penske needs to move somewhere else (or at least open a 2nd operation in another category) to keep its name up there.

And yep, they won a race in 1976. I think it was with John Watson - could be wrong, though.

  • Christine11/05/2009 at 09:11

Red Bull have said they won't be part of next year if nothing changes:

    http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/75248

"So possibly only two or maybe three of the existing teams will enter the championship. The conditions for 2010 at the moment make it impossible to sign in. But I hope there will be a meeting and a settlement before the entry deadline."

Come on Max, sort it out.

  • Journeyer11/05/2009 at 09:12

Come on Max, sort it out.

Max will probably backfoot his way out of the two-tier system. His tactics to divide and conquer FOTA have backfired. And with Bernie not explicitly supporting him, Max may no longer be the kingpin of F1 he once was.

FOTA holds the power now. And they will continue to do so as long as they stay united.

  • F1Wolf11/05/2009 at 09:15

"Come on Max, sort it out."

I must say that I do not really get what the teams are making all the fuss about. They say that the budget capped cars will be 1 -1.5 faster than the cars of the unlimited spenders. So what is the point spending all that money anyway. and as someone somewhere calculated last weekend, the 40mil cap may in fact mean as much as 150mil in spending with the engines, driver salaries and marketing all outside the cap

all can sign up for the cap and 2 tiers are no more ...

  • Journeyer11/05/2009 at 09:16

I have just listened to 5Live Chequered Flag and Anthony Davidson’s opinion is that Rubens thinks it was the strategy that lost him the race because he felt that he gave his all, and that the team took decisions based on what they thought was best at the time…

Point is, even Rubens thinks it was a strategy error. And many others think Rubens just wasn't fast enough. Either way, both sides would agree that it wasn't something deliberate.

Of the third side of conspiracy, I have nothing to say.

  • F1Wolf11/05/2009 at 09:17

    "will be 1 -1.5 faster" - typo, 1 - 1.5sec faster

It's not that simple, Wolf. The development and production of the chassis in itself is very expensive, and 40M is way too unrealistic. I don't think anyone in the paddock outside of the FIA motorhome thinks it's a feasible amount at all.

  • Christine11/05/2009 at 09:19

Or perhaps it may be, but Max can't just snap his fingers and expect it to happen. To go from hundreds of millions down to just 40 with very little warning is not acceptable. Especially when they will have already been spending.

Both sides are at an impasse and will not budge. Whatever happens, I believe we WILL see all the teams in F1 next year...

well and if we do not see somebody then the reason probably will be something else, not the cap. but the cap may be a face saving excuse for quitting (in Toyota's case for example)

Well if you'd caught me a couple of minutes ago, I was being sick in the toilet :(

  • Journeyer11/05/2009 at 09:32

well, it is that expensive because they all are spending money freely. and , as I mentioned, the cap is not really 40 mil …

even so, the capped items are easily worth beyond 40m, so even if there's a lot of items outside the cap, it's still a very difficult, if not impossible, amount.

  • Lukeh11/05/2009 at 09:32

"We don't know where these newspaper reports came from but Aguri has also said there's no chance (of a return)."

I woke up for work this morning with a real bad stomach ache. It came and went over the morning but about 5 minutes ago, I just couldn't hold it in any more. I feel much better now. That's the first time I've been sick like that in a long long time.

    :D Poor Jake

In fact, only a few of them don't have automatic sliding glass doors and I made a right twerp of myself when I expected Force India's door to gracefully slide to the right... it didn't and I walked right into it. Cue a loud bang, a bunch of people trying not to laugh and a very embarrassed TV presenter pretending he meant to do it... suffice to say I didn't get away with it!

Hehehehe. His spanish gp blog is up here.

I think this is one reason I am really enjoying F1 in 2009. We have blogs like those from Joe, James and Jake, all of which give little behind the scenes snippets of paddock life and candid photos of things you'd never see elsewhere. Then theres all the 'inside the paddock' tweeters as well who share little moments as they happen, like Fisichella tripping up the stairs or which motorhome is playing which songs. I love this more human side of F1.

  • Alianora La Canta11/05/2009 at 10:23

    I must say that I do not really get what the teams are making all the fuss about. They say that the budget capped cars will be 1 -1.5 faster than the cars of the unlimited spenders. So what is the point spending all that money anyway. {Comment #64}

Because the detail of the regulations means that it is impossible for any team to comply with the budget cap. Only a team that doesn't realise it will need foreknowledge of its entire "key" staff and supplier arrangements 12 months in advance, total knowledge of its spending at least 2, if not 3 months in advance and requires a level of scrutiny that some of the teams may be legally prevented from agreeing to. It would also be very easy for the FIA to manipulate the championship to save/condemn teams if they get into trouble.

The FIA isn't advertising any of these downsides, so the teams that sign up to the cap will effectively have been duped. Many of the teams sense something is seriously wrong with the cap but they aren't quite sure what because they've not been concentrating on the flaws in what's already been provided. As a result, they're using the default argument of competitiveness even though it's not a particularly strong argument. The likelihood that £40m would just about get teams to the grid with a car that could get the basics of the fundamental regulations right (and thus unable to do anything of note with the additional freedoms) won't stop it because it is the vague sense of wrong that drives this, not the competitiveness argument per se.

What these teams need to do is look more closely at the obligations of the cost cap, point out the blatant problems to the FIA and get them fixed. Since there is no way they can be fixed in two weeks, the cap would have to be scrapped.

Granted, we'd probably lose a couple of new teams this way, but the main fault of that is the lack of any serious bridging formula for teams between the junior series and F1, not the presence or absence of a budget cap.

Exactly - TBH I am also looking at the trusted bloggers more than the news sites for just that little bit extra and in the case of JA and Joe, a little bit of insider info...

    “We already pulled out once because we did not have the resources to continue. Even if we had $60 million to spend we would have to start from scratch again. {Comment #85}

This is interesting. Here we have a team that effectively can't join because of the budget cap because the set-up costs of becoming a F1-level constructor are more than $40m or even $60m. Granted, the probability of getting $60m in this climate is not especially high, but it does mean that any new team that hasn't spread its costs like USGPE/USF1 has will not be able to be a capped team in their first year unless they are prepared to cheat.

Never thought of it that way. Well they managed to scrap the medals system so why not a budget cap?

I think you've read that incorrectly. They ran out of money and they had to stop. Now they are saying that they have no money and would not be able to catch up because they have no resources or experience with these rules and regs...

  • Alianora La Canta11/05/2009 at 10:50

    In fact, only a few of them don’t have automatic sliding glass doors and I made a right twerp of myself when I expected Force India’s door to gracefully slide to the right… it didn’t {Comment #92}

Considering the Force India motorhome is one of the newest ones and Vijay is not exactly short of a few rupees, that surprises me! Good on Jake to share the moment and add a bit of reality to the paddock. He's done a good job all season and being occasionally self-deprecating helps that too.

Whoever made the decision to put Jake in as main presenter was absolutely inspired.

  • Alianora La Canta11/05/2009 at 10:55

    I think you’ve read that incorrectly. They ran out of money and they had to stop. Now they are saying that they have no money and would not be able to catch up because they have no resources or experience with these rules and regs… {Comment #109}

Your point that the experience level or lack thereof Super Aguri has with the 2009 regulations would increase the costs through trial and error (it would also flatten the performance improvement curve, which would impact on sponsor acquisition later). Unfortunately, it makes it even more likely that no new team will be able to get into F1 as a capped team unless it spreads the costs out over multiple years.

  • Alianora La Canta11/05/2009 at 10:58

    Never thought of it that way. Well they managed to scrap the medals system so why not a budget cap? {Comment #108}

Because the FIA is getting increasingly fed up of FOTA and CVC gently eroding its powers. It wants to be in sole charge of F1 (at least from a regulatory perspective), but to have that the FIA must have a certain level of control over the surrounding environment. While FOTA gets its own way, this level of control cannot happen.

In other words, there's no good reason why the budget cap can be scrapped, but the FIA won't see it that way.

Button says Brawn have regained the advantage of the field now, which I find a bit odd because I’m not sure they ever lost it? He’s won four out of the five races there have been, so I can’t see them having been behind at any point.

You could say that Red Bull were faster in China and Bahrain. Even Ross and Jenson say that the only reason they beat RBR & DerSeb in Bahrain was some good strategy.

Will be an interesting quali !

  • Journeyer11/05/2009 at 12:48

I should've sold Glock yesterday - lost a bit of money not doing so. Oh well.

Monaco is a place to roll the dice. And in the spirit of Monaco, I'm taking a big(-ish) gamble: drop Kubica (who's doing poorly) and Glock (who's not doing that poorly) for Webber (on form now, but bad luck is never far away) and Sutil (does well at Monaco, but has been a bad luck magnet of late).

This will either propel me into the Top 100, or drop me to the bottom of the Top 200. Here goes.

Um, I think the only answer to that can be yes!

I've seen 10 seconds of crashes, and 10 seconds of Button in front of everybody. Is that a good summary? And I was with passionate Ferrari fans and I hate missing opportunities to talk about Ferrari this year. On the bright side I was near a place called Monza...

I dont mind the normal one but when I left the shop (assignment's make me hungry and thirsty, dont ask :P) i realised it was cola but I hasn't tried before, so I thought 'eh. why not'

    Really really no delay?

  • Steven Roy11/05/2009 at 14:50

    Really really no delay?

I have full confidence NASA will find a brand new problem to screw it up.

The thing I find reall interesting is they have another shuttle on th adjacent pad in case they have to rescue these astronauts. What are the chances of it going first time?

  • Steven Roy11/05/2009 at 15:03

The thing I find reall interesting is they have another shuttle on th adjacent pad in case they have to rescue these astronauts. What are the chances of it going first time?

Yeah I find the back up system a little odd - they cannot get a shuttle to go sometimes for 2 weeks when there is no urgency. If there was a problem on the other one, or the ISS, how long would it take?

thanks for the headsup - i've lost track of the schedule.

Maybe Amy can adjust gravity so that the shuttle and the ISS are always in the right position on the hour.

It's being shown live on the Discovery channel at 6:30 tonight too - which is very unusual.

they must be confident that it's going ahead. ;)

  • Steven Roy11/05/2009 at 16:40

I see on autosport that Mateschitz is now syaing that he won't enter F1 if their is a two tier system. Apologies if this has been mentioned before.

They sound very confident so far although the commentator has sais it WILL launch on time so hopefully he does not have the Murray Walker touch.

Yup - it's been mentioned. So that's Ferrari, Red Bull/Toro Rosso, Williams, BMW, Renault, Toyota, and Brawn who have all publicly said no to two-tier F1. That leaves Force India, and McLaren (who won't talk for obvious reasons).

FOTA is united - and Max knows it. What's his Plan B?

  • Scott in Italy11/05/2009 at 16:44

Cool. I'd love to see a live shuttle on TV in decent quality, and not online. CNN.com is showing it (under live video) too if you have issues taking the feed of either yahoo or NASA.

  • Steven Roy11/05/2009 at 16:50

BBC News apparently always shows the launches too.

  • Steven Roy11/05/2009 at 16:52

  • Steven Roy11/05/2009 at 16:53

I wish they would stop having launches and landings on days when I have other stuff to do. I have to leave about 5 minutes after the launch. I should go before it but I guess I am going to be late.

  • Steven Roy11/05/2009 at 16:57

Ice crews have returned to the pad to examine some ice at the base of the SRB or external tank. Ice is normal due to the venting of fuel gases and visits by the ice crew are normal. No report yet as to their thoughts

At least they are not lipsynching :)

Any chance we can get the commentators for the space shuttle launch and F1 switched? "Go GO Go for shuttle launch Atlantis rapidly pooling away from the tower..." and each F1 race could start with "The cars moving gently past the tower and this the 5th race here in Barcelona...." maybe James Allen could do a guest spot?

  • Scott in Italy11/05/2009 at 17:32

this site has links to a few different camera and the weather stream even. and i think it's got the low bandwidth audio if you need it.

  • Scott in Italy11/05/2009 at 17:34

Thanks! But no, I should have explained myself better: I'm at work, most of the feed doesn't work (and I should be working... :-) )

No worries. Here at sidepodcast as soon as someone says they have no feed we feel the need to help out :) The launch is at 1 minute and 56 seconds past the hour - so if you've got 2 minutes turn on then :)

  • Steven Roy11/05/2009 at 17:34

Thanks! But no, I should have explained myself better: I'm at work, most of the feed doesn't work (and I should be working... :-) )

    Kinda like Legard, then? :D

  • Journeyer11/05/2009 at 17:39

NASA genius boffin: "visible light - the light you can see with your eye"

    Um... right... then.

  • Steven Roy11/05/2009 at 17:40

    Kinda like Legard, then? :D

NASA TV launch commentators are like Legard and Allen.

It's visible....so you can see it. That is really going to enthuse the next generation

  • Christine11/05/2009 at 17:40

NASA genius boffin: "visible light - the light you can see with your eye"

I know all about lights you can see with your eyes. Just ask Mr C.

  • Scott in Italy11/05/2009 at 17:40

NASA need to send all these people on the Jackie Stewart public speaking course

I work in science and we have specifically trained "Science Communicators" but I think the program is a little different to the NASA program. To be fair I did take the isolated quote from the boffin probably out of context - he was setting up for a discussion about infrared light, but i'd stopped listening as well because he was taking an interesting topic and talking about it like you were discussing ear wax removal...

  • Steven Roy11/05/2009 at 17:41

I know all about lights you can see with your eyes. Just ask Mr C.

You mean you can still see?

  • Lynch11/05/2009 at 17:42

What's this nasa malarky about then??

  • Christine11/05/2009 at 17:42

You mean you can still see?

Actually, that's true. My specialist knowledge is more about lights you can see for a moment and then you will never see again.

  • Steven Roy11/05/2009 at 17:42

:) They're talking about a cloud build up north of the launch pad. no dramas now, but they're keeping an eye on it.

  • Steven Roy11/05/2009 at 17:48

it's quite compelling, not seen a launch for years, thanks Steven and Flibster for the link

It's like racing you start of with the launch then you want to see Hubble capture then 5 consecutive days of spacewalking then the landing. And before you know it you have lost two weeks

  • Scott in Italy11/05/2009 at 17:48

Yeah, I have that picture :-)

Maybe without sound, there is nobody else in the office...

On Freeview, yes. On NASA TV, no.

Just on the energy drink thing earlier.... I tried Monster yesterday. It is a lot nicer to drink than the un-named one but it comes in a bigger can so there is potential for overload... and Lukeh, you were warned :-)

  • Steven Roy11/05/2009 at 18:30

The plan now is to rendezvous with Hubble tomorow.

    Dock and capture Wednesday.

Spacewalks every day from Thursday till Monday.

    Release Hubble Tuesday

    Crew day off Wednesday

Do boring stuff Thursday - Monaco FP is on Thursday

Land Friday when we have no free practise.

They went a day early to suit sidepodcast

Oh my god, you're right - that works out so good!! As the friday before Monaco I have 4 hours of exams. Thank you, you lovely little place!

  • Steven Roy11/05/2009 at 18:34

Today once they get to orbit th only things on the schedule are

Open the payload bay doors - These are radiators for cooling. They use an insane amount of water all the time they are closed

    Deploy the Ku band antenna

    Activate the shuttle robotic arm

Then downlink the video from the on-board cameras

    So nothing remotely exciting

  • Steven Roy11/05/2009 at 18:34

I've wondered, why do they do the Monaco FP on a Thursday and not Friday?

There is a dinner on the Friday that it is compulsory for the drivers to attend.

  • RG / Mark Webber11/05/2009 at 18:35

There is a dinner on the Friday that it is compulsory for the drivers to attend.

Ah right. Wasn't aware of that.

  • Steven Roy11/05/2009 at 18:36

They are now going to have a short burn of th orbital manouvring thrusters to correct the orbit. Perfectly normal

  • guille230611/05/2009 at 18:36

There is a dinner on the Friday that it is compulsory for the drivers to attend.

    Had a splitting headache

Every muscle in my body has hurt, making it difficult to move

But I've taken some Anadin, just about to take some more, had a small nap and I'm feeling a bit better :) My muscles no longer ache as bad and the headache has died down substantially. Now just sipping some Volvic Touch of Fruit. :)

  • Steven Roy11/05/2009 at 18:38

That can't be the reason surely? Dinners will be in the evening?

That was always the reason I heard

  • Pat W11/05/2009 at 18:44

I've wondered, why do they do the Monaco FP on a Thursday and not Friday?

Used to be to 'give the residents a break' or something like that. There was no track action at all on Friday. This changed about 3 or 4 years ago when GP2 and other things ran qualifying Friday morning.

  • Jon Waldock11/05/2009 at 18:44

I dont mind the normal one but when I left the shop (assignment’s make me hungry and thirsty, dont ask :P) i realised it was cola but I hasn’t tried before, so I thought ‘eh. why not’

The cola is yeugh and everyone knows it (’cept Dank).

It tastes like cola soaked up into a moudly dishcloth and then drained into an old running shoe added with toilet cleaner!

It's like replacing Rubens with Sato for me. You're still gonna watch but it's just gonna be car crash tele. But then again, it IS the eurovision so it'll be car crash tele whoever presents it...

You've gotta love the whole cheesiness from it, and how serious Britain seems to take it musically. I remember a few years back, lithuania's entry being 5 guys screaming 'WE ARE THE WINNERS OF EUROVISION' - best entry ever!

If JB's managed to win 4 races out 5 without it, I agree. They would need a monumental drop in form to really consider it. But right now, it's not necessary.

Anyone remember the ditty by one of the Balkan nations from a few years ago? It was called 'Grandma Beats The Drum' or something like that, and the band did indeed have a little old lady in a bathchair on stage with them. Towards the end she jumped out of it and started banging a huge drum. Surreal...

Agreed. It's only good for starts and blocking IMO

And if it starts having prblems and eventually fails, you're screwed having to carry around that extra weight and not using the system because it's broke.

France’s entry was amazing. I thought they just got a random guy off the street and chucked him on a golf cart!

Anyone remember the ditty by one of the Balkan nations from a few years ago? It was called 'Grandma Beats The Drum' or something like that, and the band did indeed have a little old lady in a bathchair on stage with them. Towards the end she jumped out of it and started banging a huge drum. Surreal...

Last year's Spanish guy with the plastic guitar was pretty damn funny!

Our entry from a couple of years ago was a little disturbing. "Would you like something to suck on for landing, sir?" - I can't tell how wrong that line is on so many levels.

Thats the great thing about the Eurovision though - you can sit there watching sometimes with no other expression except O_O at whats unveiling before your eyes!

  • Stuart C11/05/2009 at 19:37

    Why?

My wife and one of her cronies once hosted a Eurovision party with food/drinks from each nation.

  • Steven Roy11/05/2009 at 19:38

I love that guy in the NASA press conference. They know exactly what they are going to do and exactly how long it will take. Hubble has been flying around in space for a few years. Doing stuff in a big swimming pool is not the same as foing it in space to something that has been there for years.

Bernie says there are TWO US entries. It looks like someone’s leaving the IRL… but who?

GPWeek is thinking it’s Penske. I’m thinking it’s Andretti Green - and they’d have a lineup of Danica-Marco. Ganassi has also been floated as the possible mystery entry.

Penske have done F1 before and are big enough to run parallel programs. I don't see Michael Andretti wanting to go anywhere near F1

*cough* needless to say i'm hoping for a crash at the front at the start :P

    Quite right too.

  • Steven Roy11/05/2009 at 20:26

Oh this current crisis in the context of the FISA/FOCA war? You must have a decent opinion on what is happening here?

It's a bit different because then the teams were split. Ferrari, Renault, Alfa-Romeo etc aligned themselves with Balestre and FISA and the Cosworth brigade aligned themselves with Bernie and FOCA. It was pretty poisonous with teams boycotting races etc. The imola race where Pironi stole the win from Villeneuve that resulted in Gilles being killed at the next race was FISA only. Had the FOCA teams been there Ferrari may not have been leading and .....

The current dispute is a bit more civilised but the problem the teams have is FOTA is a very new organisation that is leaderless so everything is up for debate and vote whereas before Bernie lead and the FOCA teams followed so decisions and tactics could be made quickly. Now you have Briatore and the like leaking to the press.

In the end to me it looks like they either accept a budget cap or set up an alternative championship. You would think with all the expensive lawyers that when the teams signed up to commit to F1 till 2012 they would have had the contracts agreed in a way that they could not be bullied like this but Ferrari stitched the rest of the teams up for 30 pieces of silver. The problem now is that Ferrari is the weakest link.

There was a T shirt advertise widely at the time of the FISA FOCA war. It had the slogan FISA + FOCA = FIASCO. When FOTA was announced I asked someone what FIA + FOTA = The answer I got back was O FIAT

  • Stuart C11/05/2009 at 20:26

it just seems like a shuffle but with a new screen, although i swear it says "to make a continuous piece of music"....well.....i know this is wrong, because Biffy Clyro then The Script then Chris Tomlin, then Kanye West and then Coldplay. do not go together

Would they go back to Cosworth? If not, Ferrari?

  • Jon Waldock11/05/2009 at 21:58

Would they go back to Cosworth? If not, Ferrari?

4 ferrari engined teams, not sure the other teams would agree

  • me11/05/2009 at 21:59

Would they go back to Cosworth? If not, Ferrari?

frank said he thought the cosworth was rubbish when they had it, and now the little talent that was there have all moved on. basically he suggested it would make a nice door stop.

it's likely that if toyota don't sign, neither will ferrari. will mercedes? and if not where does that leave brawn / force india.

the manufacturers have the power. lots and lots of power, so long as they stick together.

  • Chris11/05/2009 at 22:00

4 ferrari engined teams, not sure the other teams would agree

    There's only 2 atm, compared to Mercedes's 3

  • Andy Taylor11/05/2009 at 22:00

iTunes DJ is just the new name for Party Shuffle - it chooses random songs from your library. You can also provide guest access for people to choose songs for you via an iPod Touch or iPhone running the Apple Remote app.

  • me11/05/2009 at 22:00

the other teams would consist of (i assume):

    - williams

    - f1fi

    - lola

    - usgpe

    - renault (maybe)

oooh, you don't wanna do that, imagine what crass eurovision entries might be found...

  • me11/05/2009 at 22:03

    Mclaren?

mclaren cannot enter the budget capped championship this year. it's too big a cut, too soon. they've probably already broken the 2010 budget cap on r&d for next years car already.

  • Chris11/05/2009 at 22:05

Oh, yeah. Forgotten about that. I was thinking that Mercedes would want to stay for FIF1 and Brawn, which would ensure Mclaren stay as well.

    Or the Teletubbies :D

  • Chris11/05/2009 at 22:07

    Or the Teletubbies :D

For a while, at work they had a cd of random songs playing through the shop. Most were 80's songs, but we also had Teletubbies, Ghostbusters and Bob the Builder!

the other teams would consist of (i assume):

Actually, all of the current teams (except Force India and McLaren) have said (implicitly or explicitly) that they won't sign up for F1 2010 if it stays as a two-tiered system. Add McLaren's 2010 spending and they probably won't join either.

So that means that if things stay as they are, all the current teams will leave F1 (and set up their own thing). Bernie won't stand by that (for sure!) and will drag Max back to sanity. FOTA may be a democracy (which isn't a good form of government in this sport), but its unity is its greatest strength.

The teams are all committed to F1 until 2012 so they can't walk away without being in breach of contract.

  • Journeyer11/05/2009 at 23:45

They're committed to Bernie, not to F1. So as long as Bernie is on their side, they won't get sued for nothing.

They are the baddest baddies in Star Trek who are part machine. They don't kill their enemies they assimilate and make them Borg. Each Borg drone has no personality or individual thoughts the hear all Borg thoughts and only exist to assimiliate more species.
