Yesterday was a surprising day in F1 land, as we saw Ferrari show improvements and make the same old mistakes. However, there were other things rumbling on outside of the Barcelona action that caught our eye:

  • We have now had Toyota, BMW and Raikkonen all suggest that if the 2010 regulations head they way they appear to be going then they might not make an appearance next season. Perhaps it is easy to say we could lose Kimi, as there are plenty of drivers waiting in the wings, but are there two big teams ready to step up to the budget cap plate?
  • Adrian Newey has spoken out again regarding the double decker diffuser and how hard it will be to get it to integrate with the Red Bull. Ollie has a great post about this over at Blog F1, although the title leaves little to the imagination!
  • We're still pondering the F1 Mole blog on the BBC, and how un-mole-ish it seems. Surely the idea of a mole-type blog is that one gets to the bottom of things, anonymously, and can therefore cover articles that other non-mole journalists cannot? This doesn't seem to bear any of those moley hallmarks, and we're wondering whether it should just be rebranded as another blog, rather than taking credit from the real moles.

That'll do it for today. We've got a race and much podcasting goodness to enjoy today, so hopefully we will see you at some point in the comments.

    Morning everyone. :)

Anyone gonna stick their neck on the line for Podium predictions?

    Button, Barrichello, Massa

    I'll try Button, Vettel, Massa.

Right, time for bed. Night all, will be back in time for race start, possibly a bit earlier so as to catch the Grid Walk.

Right, I'm off to sleep. See you all tomorrow for the Parade Lap! :D

  • Journeyer10/05/2009 at 00:47

    Weather.com update for Sunday:

Tomorrow: A steady light rain early...then remaining cloudy with a few showers. High 71F. Winds SE at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 60%.

I'm reading this as some slight drizzling in the morning, with the track probably being fully dry by the formation lap.

    Yet another sidepodspace update

Normally on missions to the ISS spacewalks take place on alternate days for this mission there will be spacewalks on 5 consecutive days which I wasn't expecting. Assuming i am translating mission days properly and the launch happens on Monday the first spacewalk should be on Friday and the last on the following Tuesday. Each spacewalk will last 6.5 to 7 hours. I guess there is going to be a lot of I spy.

    Here's an interesting stat:

From 1991-2004, the polesitter at Barcelona has won the championship - each and every time without fail.

From 2005-2008, though, the polesitter has only gone on to win the championship once (Alonso in 2006).

  • pauli (oz)10/05/2009 at 00:59

From 1991-2004, the polesitter at Barcelona has won the championship - each and every time without fail.

Surely in those years, the pole sitter was in a very dominant car? It's only the last 4 years or so the championship has been competitive.

At least to my blurred memory

  • Alianora La Canta10/05/2009 at 01:02

Windguru predicts no rain until Thursday afternoon, which might be a bit late for those hoping for a shake-up in the order.

BBC predicting a lot of rain in the general area but not necessarily any at the track itself.

Then again meterology has never been a completely exact science...

  • Journeyer10/05/2009 at 01:03

Surely in those years, the pole sitter was in a very dominant car? It's only the last 4 years or so the championship has been competitive.

Not necessarily. In particular, non-dominant cars on pole were Senna in 1991, Villeneuve in 1997, Hakkinen in 1999, and Schumacher in 2000 and 2003.

  • Journeyer10/05/2009 at 01:04

BBC predicting a lot of rain in the general area but not necessarily any at the track itself.

Hmm I would have thought the 97 williams was very dominant, and a little less so those Ferraris, but I see your point.

  • pauli (oz)10/05/2009 at 01:06

Hmm I would have thought the 97 williams was very dominant, and a little less so those Ferraris, but I see your point.

The 97 Williams SHOULD'VE been dominant, but the drivers didn't squeeze the full potential out of the car.

The 2000 and 2003 Ferraris had very stiff competition for the title.

  • pauli (oz)10/05/2009 at 01:13

The 2000 and 2003 Ferraris had very stiff competition for the title.

Like I say, blurry memory. I'm remembering the season result I guess.

What the 91-2004 result probably *do* show, is that those were the best all round cars, and I think that's what Barcelona shows up.

  • Journeyer10/05/2009 at 01:16

What the 91-2004 result probably *do* show, is that those were the best all round cars, and I think that's what Barcelona shows up.

Yep, agreed on that point. And yet...

Look at the 2005-2008 results again. It may no longer accurately predict the drivers champion, but it has predicted the CONSTRUCTORS championship for the last 3 years.

    2006: Renault

    2007: Ferrari

    2008: Ferrari

That must be very good news for Brawn. And if Button emerges as the only Brawn driver that will properly contend for the title, he must like his chances a lot. ;)

  • pauli (oz)10/05/2009 at 01:19

Very true, although it might have got the 2007 result wrong, but for that little FIA hearing.

I get the fealing, as long as he can stay ahead of Massa, that Button will walk away with this race.

  • Steven Roy10/05/2009 at 01:20

Just noticed that Colin McRae's protegé Kris Meeke won the latest round of the IRC championship. He is a really good driver and despite backing from McRae for several years he has struggled to get a drive.

Max screwed the WRC and the sportscar championship. I am sure Bernie will have rewarded him for getting a lot of people to stop wathing those championships and switching to F1.

If the '97 Williams was very dominant a guy like Damon Hill could have won races...

I did not see "Hurrying Heinz" get a ton of wins with the '97 Williams, or 2nd places or thirds for that matter.

I still say that the '97 Williams was one of Williams lesser triumphs and I was a Williamas fan back then. And please do not talk to be about Williams botched pit stops back then. It was the best arguement for Steven Roy's "No Pit Stops" fanaticial beliefs.

I just cant believe how close it is with one race left...

    Al: 91

    Scott: 89

    Lou: 88

Im also slightly pleased that none of them are able to beat my total (126) from last year, thats not egotistical is it? :P

    Al:5 wins

    Lou:4 wins

    Scott: 6 wins

This season its more realistic as only those 3 who have won (plus Chris Lee, Scotts team mate).

    Red Bull: 114

    Weather report:

ProWeather - AM Drizzle, 30% chance of rain

WeatherBug - Partly cloudy, mild, 0% chance of rain

MSN Weather - PM Clouds, 15% chance of rain

Accuweather - Clouds yielding to sun

    Weather.com - AM Drizzle, 30% of rain

Basically, it looks like if there's going to be rain, it'll be this morning and just a drizzle. So for the race itself we should have some lovely sunshine, and maybe one or two high winds.

Morning all. Laying in bed on a Sunday morning with a cold drink and your alarm playing sigur Ros and Pink Floyd songs = bliss. :)

What did the postbox ever do to Bjork?! Poor thing. That video amuses me far mroe than it should.

What did the postbox ever do to Bjork?! Poor thing.

Rested but feeling guilty for a) the lack of homework I've done and b) not listening to enough podcasts.

  • Christine10/05/2009 at 09:55

Rested but feeling guilty for a) the lack of homework I've done and b) not listening to enough podcasts.

The good thing about podcasts is there's no time limit on them!

  • Pat W10/05/2009 at 09:55

I'm going to get some brekkie then see if I can do some while the parade lap is on - we'll see how that goes, my guess is not far :-)

  • Pat W10/05/2009 at 09:55

The good thing about podcasts is there's no time limit on them!

Exactly. I'm storing them up. The end of June is going to so great! :-)

    Rather good is that.

  • Alianora La Canta10/05/2009 at 10:49

There will be trophies, flags, national anthems and champagne.

    which flags? and what anthems? {Comment #7}

I'm predicting the Brazillian flag with the Argentinian national anthem due to a monumental mix-up.

    sidepodspace update.

Tomorrow's launch is still on schedule. I am confused

  • Scott Woodwiss10/05/2009 at 15:32

    Back :)

Regarding FR, Zero Downforce is up to 198th. Kathi got almost 1000 points! :O

RG's chucking the rule book out are now down to 335th. Still higher than last years champ.

RG will be chucking out a few drivers as well.

  • Journeyer10/05/2009 at 15:36

ONE THOUSAND?!?!?! What if Massa actually had enough fuel...?

  • Journeyer10/05/2009 at 15:38

    Amy's 30th, Lou's 52nd, Christine has dropped to 58th.

  • RG / Mark Webber10/05/2009 at 15:38

    Mrs C down to 58th and Mr C 245th.

Mr C is catching up with me in going down

  • Journeyer10/05/2009 at 15:38

    And I'm up to 115th. :D Yay. :)

  • Amy10/05/2009 at 15:39

    Amy's 30th, Lou's 52nd, Christine has dropped to 58th.

I'm happy with that! Even though thats not my main team, turns out having both Brawns is the only way to score points :D

I'm happy with that! Even though thats not my main team, turns out having both Brawns is the only way to score points :D

Think its time to pop over to the daily again?

yes, yes I do love the daily.

  • Journeyer10/05/2009 at 15:40

I'm happy with that! Even though thats not my main team, turns out having both Brawns is the only way to score points :D

    It is, it is. :)

Hmmm... Kubica's value has gone up a bit. I expect Kimi's value to drop a bit more in the next 24-48 hours. Will I have enough to get him by then? And should I get him for Monaco? Hmmm... Hmmm...

  • Journeyer10/05/2009 at 15:42

yes, yes I do love the daily.

    as do i. :D

Now, Fantasy Racers... To Kimi? Or not to Kimi? Can I even get Kimi to start with?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)10/05/2009 at 15:42

I'm 40th. Off to do my FR stats then...

  • Alianora La Canta10/05/2009 at 15:42

I love this idea that Ross Brawn the master strategist got the strategy sooooo wrong but by sheer luck his number one driver won the race on what he thought was the wrong strategy. Does not compute

It might (not certainly, maybe not even probably, but might) have been a decent strategy had the Safety Car not intervened. At that point, it comes down to the flexibility of the respective halves of the garage.

    Even Homer sometimes nods.

  • Amy10/05/2009 at 15:42

Terrible result for Team Finntaly today, with 3 of the 4 drivers retiring, and the 4th one coming home last.

  • Bassano Clapper10/05/2009 at 15:43

Now, Fantasy Racers... To Kimi? Or not to Kimi? Can I even get Kimi to start with?

I debated that, went with Webber in the end

  • Scott Woodwiss10/05/2009 at 15:43

I've had to go down to 3 drivers on a couple of teams because there's no way I'm ever getting rid of Jenson.

  • RG / Mark Webber10/05/2009 at 15:43

Terrible result for Team Finntaly today, with 3 of the 4 drivers retiring, and the 4th one coming home last.

My only team had only one driver in the points. Considering I had 7 drivers as well.

Kathi got the second best score overall behind Al Grogan

  • RG / Mark Webber10/05/2009 at 15:45

How dare you call Glock poor.

    5 poor ones.

  • Journeyer10/05/2009 at 15:45

I debated that, went with Webber in the end

Webber's value will go up, I'm sure I won't be able to afford him. I have to aim for something more realistic.

    Private Leagues:

    1st Sidepodcast - 3,824.80

    2nd Autosport F1 - 3,677.80

    3rd HelloF1 - 3,620.00

Now that is crushing the competition.

  • Kathi10/05/2009 at 15:45

Hmmm... Kubica's value has gone up a bit. I expect Kimi's value to drop a bit more in the next 24-48 hours. Will I have enough to get him by then? And should I get him for Monaco? Hmmm... Hmmm...

Sell the Toyotas, Hamilton, Kimi as fast as possible - buy Webber, Massa, Barrichello maybe Rosberg,Heidfeld, Alonso and Kubica.

You don't have to keep them for the next race, but this way you will eaarn some money. Don't buy you final team until Friday free practice

  • Bassano Clapper10/05/2009 at 15:46

Don't buy you final team until Friday free practice

But popularity will drive the driver's of choice price up by then

  • Steven Roy10/05/2009 at 15:46

We are still comfortably the top private league ahead of Autosport and Hello F1. Pitlane Fanatic have dropped to sixth

  • Journeyer10/05/2009 at 15:47

I did that for China and Bahrain - it got me a couple of hundred k's. But there's no one to let go of this time - I have Kubica to keep. :D

Good job Kathi's scoring the amount of points that she is ;)

  • Bassano Clapper10/05/2009 at 15:52

Is there a way to track one's progress in the SPC league over the year?

  • Journeyer10/05/2009 at 15:52

    cooooo.......oool.

    :D

BTW, Keith is skeptical of the conspiracy theory - that's his conclusion at the end of the article.

  • Steven Roy10/05/2009 at 15:53

I have decided to start playing financial games with my FR team. So I hace short sold a couple of drivers who I may pick up later in the week if their value goes down and I may not be able to afford if it goes up. I am now considering buying some whose value could go up during the week.

  • Journeyer10/05/2009 at 15:53

Good job Kathi's scoring the amount of points that she is ;)

The rules change don't seem to have affected her too much. :D

  • RG / Mark Webber10/05/2009 at 15:53

Is there a way to track one's progress in the SPC league over the year?

  • Steven Roy10/05/2009 at 15:53

Is there a way to track one's progress in the SPC league over the year?

    Start a spreadsheet

  • Journeyer10/05/2009 at 15:53

Is there a way to track one's progress in the SPC league over the year?

Yes - under your name, click "View Team Scores".

  • Bassano Clapper10/05/2009 at 15:54

And for people who don't want to look at a downward line?

    Don't look :D

  • Kathi10/05/2009 at 15:54

Not ye and not for a while, I hope.

  • Scott Woodwiss10/05/2009 at 15:54

Ah - just entering the fastest laps for each driver in the race for my spreadsheet and there's a problem. 4 drivers didn't complete a lap. This means that those drivers are higher up in the final average lap result. What should I do?

  • Steven Roy10/05/2009 at 15:54

And for people who don't want to look at a downward line?

Don't start a spreadsheet. This also takes less effort which is good when you are not doing well

  • Steven Roy10/05/2009 at 15:55

Ah - just entering the fastest laps for each driver in the race for my spreadsheet and there's a problem. 4 drivers didn't complete a lap. This means that those drivers are higher up in the final average lap result. What should I do?

Don't count race laps because they are meaningless

  • Kris10/05/2009 at 15:55

I can't believe how touch fantasy racers is... I managed to get 1,2,3 and 5 and still went down in the league... Still one place ahead of christine though I suppose.

  • Bassano Clapper10/05/2009 at 15:55

Yes - under your name, click "View Team Scores".

  • Journeyer10/05/2009 at 15:56

Good point. No other way, then. :(

  • Bassano Clapper10/05/2009 at 15:57

Give them the lowest lap time of the race each

  • Scott Woodwiss10/05/2009 at 15:57

Give them the lowest lap time of the race each

    You mean the slowest? ;)

  • Journeyer10/05/2009 at 15:57

i was saying cool to us doing well in fantasy racers, journeyer. you are confusing my comment with something else.

yup, i knew that. just got my commenting all messed up. :D

  • Scott Woodwiss10/05/2009 at 15:58

    You mean the slowest?

Ah, that would work actually since the slowest is Heikki's 1'28 before he retired.

  • Bassano Clapper10/05/2009 at 15:58

Shows overall position, not private league

Good point. No other way, then. :(

My progress alternates between down & up each race, overall though - I'm climbing. Slowly

  • Bassano Clapper10/05/2009 at 15:58

    Yes, of course

    [blushes]

  • Amy10/05/2009 at 15:58

    poor gearless heikki.

  • Journeyer10/05/2009 at 15:58

Ah, that would work actually since the slowest is Heikki's 1'28 before he retired.

Beat me to it. Hehe. Is Heikki's laptime representative, though, since he had a gearbox issue? Oh well.

  • me10/05/2009 at 15:59

    poor gearless heikki.

    hehehe.

  • RG / Mark Webber10/05/2009 at 15:59

Have concluded that I am now screwed for any good results in the future of Fantasy Racers. Might rename 'Rule Book Un-Throwoutable'

  • Scott Woodwiss10/05/2009 at 15:59

Beat me to it. Hehe. Is Heikki's laptime representative, though, since he had a gearbox issue? Oh well.

So I should do Kimi's instead?

  • Steven Roy10/05/2009 at 16:00

My progress alternates between down & up each race, overall though - I'm climbing. Slowly

I have gone up every race but that was because my first race was bad. Who could have thought Brawn would win

  • Bassano Clapper10/05/2009 at 16:00

So I should do Kimi's instead?

They didn't complete a lap so would it not be fairer to give them the slowest possible time?

  • Journeyer10/05/2009 at 16:00

I have gone up every race but that was because my first race was bad. Who could have thought Brawn would win

    Hey! I thought they'd win. :P

  • Amy10/05/2009 at 16:01

right time to scour for pictures of the cake that is inevitable in the paddock today. That makes a count of 6 cakes from 5 races.

  • Scott Woodwiss10/05/2009 at 16:01

They didn't complete a lap so would it not be fairer to give them the slowest possible time?

So Heikki's it is then? I'm getting confused here.

  • Journeyer10/05/2009 at 16:01

They didn't complete a lap so would it not be fairer to give them the slowest possible time?

Yeah, Bassano has a point. Go with what he's saying. ;)

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)10/05/2009 at 16:01

Question: Using the FR stats, how would you figure out what the best possible team was?

  • Bassano Clapper10/05/2009 at 16:01

So Heikki's it is then? I'm getting confused here.

If his was the slowest, then Yes

  • Chris10/05/2009 at 16:02

right time to scour for pictures of the cake that is inevitable in the paddock today. That makes a count of 6 cakes from 5 races.

It's Heildfield's birthday today. look at BMW's pictures

  • Journeyer10/05/2009 at 16:02

Question: Using the FR stats, how would you figure out what the best possible team was?

That's tough. It depends on how much starting money one has. After making that assumption, you then look at points per million.

  • Scott Woodwiss10/05/2009 at 16:02

If his was the slowest, then Yes

Right done it. Results shall be posted on here in just a sec ;)

  • Bassano Clapper10/05/2009 at 16:02

Question: Using the FR stats, how would you figure out what the best possible team was?

    Kathi's team is worth 68.9m!!

  • Steven Roy10/05/2009 at 16:03

    Hey! I thought they'd win. :P

And thinking like that has ruined my chances of winning FR this season

  • Steven Roy10/05/2009 at 16:05

Question: Using the FR stats, how would you figure out what the best possible team was?

You can't now unless you can work out what the most amount of money someone could possibly have made by this time in the season and who they could have bought for this race. You can only find out what the highest score was which was Al.

  • Amy10/05/2009 at 16:05

of the 6 cakes this year, Heidfeld has had 2 of them. Maybe if he ate a little less cake he would win a race.

  • Journeyer10/05/2009 at 16:05

You can't now unless you can work out what the most amount of money someone could possibly have made by this time in the season and who they could have bought for this race. You can only find out what the highest score was which was Al.

So he has to start from Australia. That makes sense. It will take tons of work to catch up, though.

  • Bassano Clapper10/05/2009 at 16:06

of the 6 cakes this year, Heidfeld has had 2 of them. Maybe if he ate a little less cake he would win a race.

Maybe he's trying to catch Bobby K in weight? :D

You know, whenever I see 'Bobby K', I think Bobby Kennedy. He's like the polar opposite of Bobby Kubica. :P

    Cakes?

once you notice how many photos of cakes in the paddock there are, you spot them everywhere.

  • Journeyer10/05/2009 at 16:07

It would be impossible because you would need a real time track of the varistion in prices of each driver to know when to buy or sell who. Can't be done

Good point. Not to mention the prices change every 1-2 days.

  • Steven Roy10/05/2009 at 16:07

of the 6 cakes this year, Heidfeld has had 2 of them. Maybe if he ate a little less cake he would win a race.

Maybe it is to wind up Kubica because he can't have any cake.

  • Kathi10/05/2009 at 16:07

I don't know in which thread to post :(

    Kathi's team is worth 68.9m!!

That's my old team. My team is worth 69.6.

Like I said sell the drivers that were rubbish as fast as possible (i.e. during the race) and pick up the ones that finishe well as soon as the race is over.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)10/05/2009 at 16:08

You can't now unless you can work out what the most amount of money someone could possibly have made by this time in the season and who they could have bought for this race. You can only find out what the highest score was which was Al.

How do you know it was Al that scored the most?

  • Bassano Clapper10/05/2009 at 16:08

I fear the price changes have created a two-tier system in FR

Those who bought Brawn & Red Bull early, on the cheap, and those who did not

  • Journeyer10/05/2009 at 16:08

How do you know it was Al that scored the most?

It's on the website. 'Grand Prix - Top 25'

  • Journeyer10/05/2009 at 16:09

You may be right, Bassano. But had this system been implemented in 2008, it would be a different story...

Final Average Lap times from Barcelona:

    Button - 1'21.598

    Barrichello - 1'21.716

    Massa - 1'21.905

    Webber - 1'21.945

    Rosberg - 1'21.947

    Vettel - 1'22.008

    Alonso - 1'22.073

    Kubica - 1'22.179

    Nakajima - 1'22.226

    Piquet - 1'22.335

    Glock - 1'22.361

    Hamilton - 1'22.375

    Raikkonen - 1'22.378

    Fisichella - 1'22.734

    Heidfeld - 1'22.768

    Trulli - 1'23.234

    Buemi - 1'23.386

    Bourdais - 1'23.474

    Kovalainen - 1'23.662

    Sutil - 1'24.057

Gap from Button to Sutil - 2.459 seconds. SECONDS! ;)

Again, to clarify, Trulli, both STRs and Sutil were given Kovi's 1'28 fastest race lap because they failed to complete the first lap. From now on, any drivers who fail to complete the first lap in the race will be given the slowest fastest lap.

i still think they're successful - it's produced more overtaking than last year, but not as successful as hoped. despite that, we're here, and there's no point in switching back to the old regs. they can tweak the regs to improve racing, but it'll bring us closer to a spec series...

We've still to go to the good tracks yet, such as Silverstone, Monza, Spa, Suzuka, etc. Only there will we get a true test of the new regs with the high speed section and infamous corners.

really? i preferred bahrain over today...

  • Bassano Clapper10/05/2009 at 16:36

    i preferred today over bahrain,

I enjoyed Bahrain because I caught loads of action from the in-car camera as it happened

  • Scott Woodwiss10/05/2009 at 16:36

really? i preferred bahrain over today...

Same. In what sense was today better than 2 weeks ago?

  • Bassano Clapper10/05/2009 at 16:36

    i preferred today over bahrain,

But you weren't exactly lucid and on top form

  • Scott Woodwiss10/05/2009 at 16:37

The black death can make you think funny things ;)

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)10/05/2009 at 16:37

I don't think we've seen the new regs at a proper circuit yet. Perhaps the cars couldn't overtake today because they are all so close - remember they know the circuit too well because they test so much here!

  • Scott Woodwiss10/05/2009 at 16:38

Lord only knows what Legard looks and sounds like when you're suffering already

  • Jon Waldock10/05/2009 at 16:38

His price may go down before Monaco and let you buy him back at a profit

But Rosberg scored today. I expect his value to go up.

ive sold sutil to buy rosberg and hope sutil will drop a bit more so i can but him back.

although today id have got more points off the remaining money than i did with him

catalunya isn't a proper circuit? what the heck is then?

  • me10/05/2009 at 16:39

Same. In what sense was today better than 2 weeks ago?

drama until the very last lap.

  • Journeyer10/05/2009 at 16:39

    EXACTLY!

here's the thing: if your definition of a proper circuit is Silverstone/Spa/Monza/Suzuka, you're in trouble. they're outnumbered by the Barcelonas and Istanbuls and Valencias of the F1 world. The new regs have to work on all types of circuits - yes, even the crappy ones.

  • Scott Woodwiss10/05/2009 at 16:39

    110% agreement from me sir.

true, true. still, sutil usually does well at monaco, so it may be worth having a go at him...

  • me10/05/2009 at 16:40

    Spa? Monza? Suzuka? Silverstone?

gimme me a break. see what journeyer just said.

what's the point of regs that make for x4 great races and x13 rubbish ones?

  • Christine10/05/2009 at 16:40

I definitely preferred this race over Bahrain.

  • Kathi10/05/2009 at 16:40

    More like it

  • Alianora La Canta10/05/2009 at 16:41

    Ah - just entering the fastest laps for each driver in the race for my spreadsheet and there’s a problem. 4 drivers didn’t complete a lap. This means that those drivers are higher up in the final average lap result. What should I do? {Comment #170}

Take the average up to the end of qualifying and give each of them one of it. That way the average stays the same.

If you just want to sort a "fastest lap" chart without using the times in any calculations, stick a letter (or maybe even DNF) in each relevant box. That way, they will automatically be below everyone else's time.

  • Jon Waldock10/05/2009 at 16:41

give it time and we wont have 'proper circuits' left

because generally he's alright, but i only bought him in the first place because toyota was doing good-ish

Granted the start and first corner and the restart were highlights too but apart from that it was all procession and pit strategy.

  • Journeyer10/05/2009 at 16:45

    Because Massa always wins?

:D He won't this year, by the looks of it...

  • Scott Woodwiss10/05/2009 at 16:45

like when restricted fuel tanks were run in MotoGP, until everyone had sorted out exactly how much they had to run, it was awesome.

  • me10/05/2009 at 16:46

What I mean is, that only happend in the last few laps, what about the other 55 after the end of the safety car?

brilliant stuff happening with strategy. the massa/vettel battle for refuelling (twice) was ace. watching the brawns duel was fabulous. webber leaping up field also brilliant.

loved the spanish fans when they suddenly twigged alonso could gain a position.

  • Journeyer10/05/2009 at 16:46

pretty much, although i do want webber, but i'd have to sell rosberg and sutil to get him,

yup, and given that webber is a bad-luck magnet, it's not worth letting go of 2 drivers to get him.

but webber's been scoring well lately - who's the bad-luck magnet now?

this is true, im going to look into it

  • me10/05/2009 at 16:47

If the excitement of this race was that we were waiting for Massa to run out of fuel then why do you oppose the ban on refuelling? ;)

because we HAVE refuelling, and we still have this. take away refuelling and today would have been diabolical (and i wouldn't have watched).

  • Journeyer10/05/2009 at 16:48

What I mean why keep him now. His price is falling and webber's rising. You can swap them back before the Monaco GP and you will have made some money.

  • Scott Woodwiss10/05/2009 at 16:49

But you would have the risk of cars running out of fuel near the end - the last lap drama you enjoyed?

So basically what that means is you'd watch the start, switch off and switch back on at the end to see if anyone runs out? Riiiight...

  • me10/05/2009 at 16:49

But you would have the risk of cars running out of fuel near the end - the last lap drama you enjoyed?

i would've switched off by lap 11 and missed it.

plus ferrari were incompetent. that isn't going to happen to every team every race, and then what are you gonna watch?

  • Bassano Clapper10/05/2009 at 16:50

What's the reasoning for removing refuelling next year?

Is that a silly question given that it's coming from the FIA?

  • me10/05/2009 at 16:50

What's the reasoning for removing refuelling next year?

it's expensive for the teams to transport the refuellers and they want bernie to pay.

  • Christine10/05/2009 at 16:50

What's the reasoning for removing refuelling next year?

    Costs.

  • RG / Mark Webber10/05/2009 at 16:50

What's the reasoning for removing refuelling next year?

Its to expensive to carry refuelling stuff from race to race

  • Journeyer10/05/2009 at 16:50

What's the reasoning for removing refuelling next year?

FOTA asked for it. And a majority of fans asked for it too in all previous FIA/F1R surveys, I think.

  • Journeyer10/05/2009 at 16:51

Its too expensive to carry refuelling stuff from race to race

    And yes, that.

  • Amy10/05/2009 at 16:51

Its to expensive to carry refuelling stuff from race to race

this reason sounds odd to me, the planes/trucks are going to the races anyway. so is all the fuel. its just the rigs themselves, surely they're not THAT bad.

  • Scott Woodwiss10/05/2009 at 16:51

FOTA asked for it. And a majority of fans asked for it too in all previous FIA/F1R surveys, I think.

So if this doesn't work and everyone complains, does this make all F1 fans who wanted it hypocrits?

  • Jon Waldock10/05/2009 at 16:52

What I mean why keep him now. His price is falling and webber's rising. You can swap them back before the Monaco GP and you will have made some money.

  • me10/05/2009 at 16:52

So if this doesn't work and everyone complains, does this make all F1 fans who wanted it hypocrits?

    they asked the wrong fans.

  • Bassano Clapper10/05/2009 at 16:52

I agree that refuelling does artificially produce place changes but I'd still rather see the action on track. Fix that first

  • Jon Waldock10/05/2009 at 16:53

In the grand scheme of things, with the amount of equipment they already take, its not going to be that much more.

  • Journeyer10/05/2009 at 16:53

    they asked the wrong fans.

it WAS an open survey, anyone could answer it...

  • Scott Woodwiss10/05/2009 at 16:53

    they asked the wrong fans.

To be fair, they asked all F1 fans, or as many as they could. In my eyes, there are no wrong fans. A fan of F1 is just that, nothing else.

  • me10/05/2009 at 16:53

this reason sounds odd to me, the planes/trucks are going to the races anyway. so is all the fuel. its just the rigs themselves, surely they're not THAT bad.

they have to buy the refuellers too i believe and pay to maintain them. max said you have to cut costs, so they cut the first thing that they'd rather not have to deal with and be damned with the consequences.

  • Scott Woodwiss10/05/2009 at 16:53

it WAS an open survey, anyone could answer it...

    Exactly.

  • Journeyer10/05/2009 at 16:53

I agree that refuelling does artificially produce place changes but I'd still rather see the action on track. Fix that first

they tried it this year - and it hasn't worked out so well. which is why they may let this set of regs mature first before changing it again.

fair enough. i believe they would have quoted from it, if it suited the line they were pitching, but i don't think it would've actually made any difference in the long run.

small question...they are going to need the rigs during practice and quali arent they?

  • Rich10/05/2009 at 17:08

am really not enjoying this year’s fantasy racers :(

Me neither, I got trapped with drivers that either do not move in value (Alonso and Glock) or who keep falling in value (Nico and Bobbie K). The problem is the only drivers I can really swap is Bobbie-K for a Force-India (could be worth it). The problem is you need six drivers at least and for them to finish the race. I still preferred last years Fantasy Racers - I seem to have more options of changing my driver line-up.

  • me10/05/2009 at 17:08

small question...they are going to need the rigs during practice and quali arent they?

nope, gravity cans. lightweight and portable.

on the one hand those who put effort in are rewarded. on the other casual entrants are screwed.

  • Alianora La Canta10/05/2009 at 17:33

    they tried it this year - and it hasn’t worked out so well. {Comment #382}

That's largely down to two things, whose effects are difficult to tease apart due to the timing of their arrival in F1 - KERS aiding the defenders and the cars being so close together in performance that having enough difference to effect the overtake is rare nowadays.

Never try to mix sport, governance and politics on purpose - it always ends in a big sticky mess!

  • Steven Roy10/05/2009 at 17:40

To be fair, they asked all F1 fans, or as many as they could. In my eyes, there are no wrong fans. A fan of F1 is just that, nothing else.

Yes but a lot of them don't understand enough to give sensible answers

  • Alianora La Canta10/05/2009 at 17:40

    small question…they are going to need the rigs during practice and quali arent they? {Comment #443}

The rigs they use in practise and qualifying are different (and me's description of "cans" is more accurate). They're not pressurised, are considerably slower and generally live in the garages rather than getting taken out into the fast lane of the pits.

By only having the practise/qualifying rigs, the teams save the costs of lugging one set of rigs round the world.

It is the usual status quo thing. Ask people if they want to ban re-fuelling they will say no. When re-fuelling was introduced in the first place everyone complained that it should be banned because it was dangerous.

Start with all the things that the Daily Mail (yes, I know, rolls eyes) gave away a few years ago; excise most of the 'war' films; and then go from there perhaps?

More seriously though - what do *you* mean by 'classic'? Are you talking of an era, or a genre, or in that more 'general' sense that denotes box office takings?

More seriously though - what do *you* mean by 'classic'? Are you talking of an era, or a genre, or in that more 'general' sense that denotes box office takings?

Doesn't matter if they were commercial successes - some of my favourite films technically flopped.

    I'll watch almost anything though

Not normally my thing - but I'll give them a go. :D

Just set my media player to random and its picked out an episode of the Goodies. :D

On the episode of The Colbert Report that aired 10/3/07, Stephen Colbert introduced his guest, former Apollo 13 astronaut Jim Lovell, as someone who "had seen the Dark Side of the Moon." Colbert promised to ask him if "he saw it while listening to the Wizard of Oz soundtrack."

    You need it correctly sync'd

There is specific points that need to tie up.

Hence US edition and ideally a pitch corrected version on vinyl... *in my case - fanedited onto the same disc. ;)*

  • me10/05/2009 at 21:58

Well, I remember him making some errors. The one I quickly remember is of him saying Rubens entered the pits when it was actually Jenson.

That said, had I had a choice, I'd still pick BBC TV. Martin and Ted are too good to let go - for me, anyway. :D

If you still don't understand, go and read the lyrics to Greased Lightnin'

The song alludes to the fact that those driving it will find themselves inundated by the attention of many young females.

  • Andy Taylor10/05/2009 at 22:14

    What had you done wrong?

    Oi! Grease = Classic.

  • Bassano Clapper10/05/2009 at 22:15

    What had you done wrong?

1st time I was too young to argue (but did enjoy)

    2nd: wasn't my turn to choose :D

  • Flibster10/05/2009 at 22:16

First time I went to the theatre as a young'un, I asked my parents when the cartoons were coming on - I was so used to the cinema by the age of 4.. :D

  • Journeyer10/05/2009 at 22:17

    G'night Amy and Lou. :)

Just realized: Bahrain/Spain ends the run of race thrillers we've been seeing since last year. In a span of Belgium 2008 - China 2009 (9 races), we only had 1 duff race (China 2008).

2 iffy races in a row ends that run.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)10/05/2009 at 22:18

Good night everybody and good luck for your exam Lou :)
