Can Mark Webber capitalise on a pole position qualifying finish?
Hello! I know you're expecting another daily from the lovely Lou but she's a little busy so I've stepped in to make up for not being able to post my daily on Friday! Hopefully I can do just as good as a job with today's daily as Lou always does taking you into the Sunniest of all the days, Sunday. Just to clarify for Mr C, it is definitely Sunday. Whilst I'm writing this Coldplay are on the BBC Red Button kicking much backside headling T in the Park and providing much inspiration. Did you know that there's a Grand Prix on today? Oh, well, it only happens to be the British Grand Prix you know! Of course, if you're not up to scratch make sure you check out yesterdays qualifying results so you know what to expect today!
I thought it was a really enjoyable qualifying session with a bit of a damp squib of an ending but nothing too disheartening, it was just a shame the incoming rain settled pole position quite early. Feel free to mention here pole was settled before it even started! But there's so much to look forward to today I reckon. You see, with Hamilton down in 10th and Kobayashi just ahead of him and even with the threat of possible rain, that should be a cracking battle. Paul Di Resta did a fantastic job to qualify 6th on the grid at his first British Grand Prix and Mark Webber has the chance to get a win over his team mate too, who starts on the dirty side of the grid with two very fast strong starting Ferrari's behind him. It should be a fascinating race, even if Rubens did disappoint me horribly with a lowly 15th but you can't fault Maldonado's strong qualifying to get 7th secured for himself. Impressive stuff.
Whilst we're still talking Silverstone, make sure you give this incredible battle between Jules Bianchi and Christian Vietoris from the GP2 supporting race yesterday as it is just brilliant! This is why I love Silverstone, the track is so free flowing and constantly fast corners with challenging moments and overtaking opportunities... don't you just love it? What a fantastic battle though. That move from Bianchi on the damp patch is absolutely crazy near the end but he does a remarkable job.
Plenty more to share too to make your day even more fun. I felt it would be quite rude to have a daily set up for Lou and not have photography related things to share. You may have known that Mr C and several Sidepodcast commenters joined plenty of other people at an Audience with Joe event run with Virgin Racing on Friday night and Mr C has uploaded a few photos from the night. I'm sure a good night was had by all and I'm really hoping we get to hear more about the event soon in the form of a cast of the pod variety. There's also a fantastic guest post from Lara Platman on the desire to get to Spa 24 Hours and get out there to do motorsport endurance photography that's absolutely worth a read, just as is Jordan F1's guest post on how a model figurine can easily be linked to Formula 1. Little bit of history involved to keep you up to date and in the know!
Finally on the photography front, why don't you give Lou's Goodwood Festival of Speed set a view from the Friday and Saturday of last weekend? I'm sure she'd love to know what you make of her photos as any kind of feedback is always welcome. Whilst your there, why not have a look at the rest of her sets too? Go onnn. You won't regret it, I promise. There's something for everyone there, whether it be tennis, local culture, animals, and lots and lots of motorsport goodiness. Yes, I am totally plugging like crazy here but if it's a crime to be very proud of what your loved one can do then I am very much guilty of this charge I'm afraid. Plus plugging is awesome.
See, there's plenty to keep us entertained today! But just because I have a few more treats, here's a few more little links to share with you lovely people:
- Noticed this brilliant little post of famous 'glasses' over the years and it's oddly true just how certain names really are linked to these glasses! Love it.
- Beards. Beards can be most awesome. But what about popular icons, some mainstream others geeky (Vivi Mage!!) with beards? Well that's just a winning combination.
- If you fancy buying F1 2010 on the PC, make sure you do so today as it's 66% off on Steam today but only for today. That's just £7 in the UK!
- Christine completed her whole 30 Day Song Challenge the other day and I was well impressed as I know it can be a lot to make it the whole 30 days. Some fun choices along the way too!
- What would happen if you mashed up the Bee Gees and Pink Floyd together? Well, this is what would happen and I can't believe it works so well. Gobsmacking.
And that's Sunday! I'm really looking forward to the race and I geniunely hope you all come join us in the race thread later today and comment along with the race. If you've never done so before, why not live comment with us for the first time today on the Sidepodcast Dashboard? Choose your thread, and there we go, ready to comment away. I hope I see you there ready for the British GP! Have a brilliant Sunday!
"You may have known that Mr C and Christine as well as several Sidepodcast commenters..."
minor clarification. christine was told to stay at home and write her book. twas just meself, leigh and others. she has no time for socialising, there is work to be done.
good to know that it's sunday! phew.
oops, my bad. Will edit in a sec :)
no need. just worth noting, shall blog about the evening soon.
Evening.
We just returned from seeing The Tree Of Life, the Terrence Malick film.
Very interesting but I need to process a little bit more to comment further
Really must get some sleep. Tired doesn't begin to explain it, night guys!
cheers for the daily, sir.

Anyone still about? Only just switched on quali now.
hey ya. yup. i may do the same.
Damon Hill on at the minute. I miss Damon.
:)
he's done a fine job though. for a second career, not a bad showing at all.
Not in slightest. I hope the next stages of Silverstone can be carried through. Is it Derek Walker who's taking over from Hill?
Sorry, Derek Warrick
if he gets the vote, yup.
Just watched FP3 too. It may be quite obvious, but Murray is a legend
:)
Oh dear - not one or two people trying to get their faces on TV, but an entire crowd.
I really wish people would not do that
There does seem to be some massive consternation at tonight's NASCAR race at Kentucky...
big crashes?
what?!
Exactly - looks like the circuit sold the place out, but never actually prepared for all of them actually showing up
how can you have more seats than you have space to park the people? have they never sold out before?
Nice to see NASCAR have a sellout for once - they rarely have them now.
They built extra stands last year, but don't seem to have followed up on everything else
not in a long while.
Smaller venue than many of their other circuits
that is shocking.
Looks like this will be a template for future NASCAR circuits, then. Sellouts make good news. ;)
Dreadful lack of prep by the circuit. They'd been trying for years to get a race and when they finally do...
They will have to refund those who weren't able to park, though...
55 laps left for anyone who's interested
http://www.justin.tv/besweeet10#/w/1449136384/2
They released a statement earlier that essentially said "we'll look to fixing it next year" and not much else
drat, too many folks from over here watching it. good thing the iOS app doesn't discriminate by location. :D
:D
Montoya is P7
ooooooh, go on then!
*meant to be bloggin
Always something getting in the way
;)
Ohhh... the ad breaks... the numerous, numerous ad breaks
looks like they're floating out there. how low are those cars?
You are kidding me !!
Very close - the slightest damage to the splitter brings tonnes of sparks
Final pitstops now. Montoya P5, but will lose a couple of spots when it all filters out
Hmmmm...
"There's 25 to go and things are getting interesting" (TV cuts to ad break)
:)
yellows
is he allowed to drive with front left missing>
Dale Jr blew a tyre - oh well. Montoya back up to P7
He needs to pit instantly, but can complete that particular lap
the sent him out with no left side again though?
No, his left front went tyre when he transitioned on to the track. I think (!) his tyres were on the edge and the angle of transition from pits to the track may have nailed it.
i get that, but hasn't he gone back out again now? only missing some bodywork. or have they parked him?
He's gone back out with part of the left front bodywork missing. It's allowed... for some reason
got ya. odd.
Best not try to explain anything NASCAR in a rational manner - it'll never work
Less than 10 to go at the green - wrecking time I think
caution
Boyer smash
Sorry , Bowyer
everyone missed him.
2 cautions, just like that.
Wow - is that a tyre in the radiator?
I do not believe these laps are being counted by the way, because it's so late in the race
P15 for Montoya in the end - lost lots in the yellows. Shame. Kyle Bushe wins again
interesting idea. i think i should watch all nascar races like this. 20 laps and we're done :)
Meh finish. JJ should've been 2nd, but 3rd is just 1 point less! :D
Hheehehe
yeah, you just usually need to watch the end in NASCAR. :D
Only lost two points to Bushe. He must've jumped Edwards in the points, surely?
Kyle's 99th NASCAR win. I wonder where he will take his 100th - would be funny if it was a Nationwide event. :D
Some of the localised adverts on US TV are... a little special
:)
Edwards finished 5th (under the radar!), so nope. Kyle should now be slightly ahead in the points ahead of Edwards and JJ.
Sweet. Carl E was very quiet
Barely anyone was looking at him, then bam, Top-5 just like that. It's these drives that champions are made of. I reckon if it came down to Carl vs. Kyle, Carl would take it in the end.
Victory celebrations must be something of an anti-climax. Everything needs to be in an exact position before you're even allowed out of the car.
Are you talking about NASCAR or F1? :D
Never discount JJ. He 's only looking to get into the Chase right now - then he'll open up again
NASCAR in a much bigger way. In F1, they pull up to parc ferme and jump straight out to celebrate - in NASCAR, you have to wait and wait and wait until you get specific directions from the TV director
He does it every year - it's why I like him. :D But winning so many titles in a row just stacks up the odds against you...
At least they get to do donuts. :P
True
NASCAR done - V8 Supercars next! :D
Oh well folks.
I need sleep - good night
G'night, everyone.

my whole twitter timeline is people complaining about silverstone traffic. i'm sooooo never going there.
Good morning, How is everyone feeling on the best day of the year? :)
it's not christmas.
There is no GP on christmas!
silverstone isn't the best track, it doesn't give the best race, how can this possibly be the best day of the year :D
ohhh it's your birthday. happy birthday :D
haha, thanks :)
started drinking yet? :D
haha, not yet
But since everyone senior too mee is out of the office this week, i have taken the executive decsion to work from home :)
living the dream :)
yes!
so far it has been "can you tell x to go online"
then asking x to tell y to go online etc..
Good morning.
Watchin' "Torn" videoclip on tv, by Natalie Brucklam or however it is written...
Countdown to GP2 start! Yes, I know it must be about to end, but in my country they broadcast it at 11 :D
How are you?
Yesterday I was listening to the latest Debrief and I was hugely surprised when I heard MrC reading a comment by 'MartiF1' about the book.
I don't know who is he, but I can assure that it's not me!
MattyF1.
Aaaahh That explains everything :D
Looks like Lewis is unhappy with the sponsor comitments:
"When I re-sign the contract with McLaren they are going to be shocked at how many days they are not going to be able to make me do. I will be doing a lot less work. I definitely won't be doing the whole period of time before the Silverstone grand prix, that's for sure. I will have at least five days to prepare [for the race] in the future."
http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2011/jul/09/lewis-hamilton-mclaren-sponsorship
Guess that will mean the end to the videos ;)
From the footage of them posing by Tower Bridge when it's absolutely tipping it down, I don't blame him!
Formation lap is going on. Beautiful circuit. I wanna be at Becketts' grandstand!
According to what I've seen, I think it will be a good start.
We'll see some overtaking in turn 3.
Or the end of his time at Mclaren,
Simon Fuller obviously doesnt realise how replaceable that component of the car is
I found it interesting that he said, "when I re-sign with McLaren" but yes I agree McLaren need their Sponsors to be happy, can't rely on the sportscars yet ;)
I wouldn't like to work 14 days in a row, but perhaps I would if I earned 75 million over 5 years :D
I guess he counts goodwood as 'work'
He is very used to his lifestyle
any sponsor appearance looks easier than my job, 'turning up' isn't my job description :D
but you never know, people saying your job is easy must suck
People wouldnt say that so much if he wasnt moaning about it though!
Huh?!? Is Lewis blaming sponsorship commitments for his *-Rap form?! C'Mon lewis ?! maybe you should stop "chillin" with "J-Diddy-Zee" and people like that first!?
oh my, how long have the silver ferns had tin foil on their uniforms. Awful.
I think he's compared it to the work the drivers of other teams do for their sponsors and McLaren drivers do seem to do a lot more, but this is because their rivals Red Bull and Ferrari have very different income models, being bankrolled by the owner and sport scars respectively. McLaren have no other income other than from their sponsors so they have to please them, no sponsors, no money = rubbish car.
Lewis should really think about it ;)
He's probably also comparing his workload to other drivers. I don't see Trulli doing any photoshoot videos.
Would you really want him to? his grumpyness isn't what Sponsors want to see :)
Guess who bankrolled the downfall of the news of the world... http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/phone-hacking/8628253/Max-Mosley-bankrolls-phone-hacking-cases-against-the-News-of-the-World.html
wooo australia are losing
#netball
You raise a good point.
Maybe Lewis just needs to be grump and moan all the time...
I think he & heikki did a lot before Sepang
I wonder what he thinks of The Sun on Sunday... :D
#nothere
I think I've jinxed the Ferns, I've been watching for 4 minutes and their lead has gone from 6 goals to 2. bah.
Didn't know you watch netball. It's been on our TV all day!
make that one goal. baaaaaah.
i used to watch heaps but not so much these days. i do enjoy it though. and we do have the best team in the world according to the rankings :D
I'm surprised Simon Fuller is even letting him say these things, considering the industry he's from...
Perhaps Lewis does need his dad in his circle - his dad moving away seems to have done him more harm than good.
Just seen a clip of Paul driving DC around in a DTM car, same weekend nico was there.
BBC feature?
I stopped paying attention and now we're winning again.
I didn't realise Irene Van Dyk was 39 but I guess it makes sense, she's been playing for NZ forever and it feels like she played for South Africa forever before that too
oh its like 1999 all over again. i can't watch.
Morning!
You could party like it was.
Hi Lukeh, marvellous daily.
I watched the final that year with a bunch of people who CRIED when we lost. That wasn't a party :D
But I was cleaning my house listening to the Backstreet Boys today, that was quite a 90s party.
Thanks :)
Very excited for today's race!
They're doing F1 stuff on BBC2 on something for the weekend. Jakey and co are on there
EJ is rocking the sea blue 70's wallpaper look today it seems.
I had better dust off the old FBFB.
Have been doing a bit of cleaning this morning so if you need a hand dusting it off :)
You and Amy both cleaning today. You make me feel bad :)
Fun fun fun from NobleF1:
Tech chiefs fail to reach unanimous agreement on ditching off throttle blown diffuser ban. More soon
theres no way the FBFB can be as filthy as my place was
My room just needed a dusting as it can get wierdly dusty. I must say prancing about with a feather duster does nothing for my masculinity.
Perhaps next time I should do it listening to heavy rock music or something. Extreme dusting.
1 minute to go in the second lot of extra time OH MY NERVES
Yes. And perhaps less prancing!
Suddenly I regret my choice of wording for that comment :)
and new zealand lose by ONE GOAL in the LAST SECOND. AGAIN. GAH.
Do they not know how much they're breaking your heart?
Sauber or Williams were apparently playing hardball..
apparently Ferrari and ferrari powered Sauber, surprise surprise!
Hmm Autosport were saying that Ferrari were on side with scrapping the ban.
our goal attack threw away our chance with a poorly rushed long shot :D
it's ok, now I don't have to see their stupid tin foil dresses :)
:D
ooh the silver ferns are playing australia in melbourne in october. i might go along :)
Become a silver ferns uberfan too and turn up wrapped in tin foil
Just don't start saying you're protecting yourself from satellites reading your mind. That didn't work for Bart Simpson.
:D i think i'll stick to my standard 'kiwi fan' outfit and turn up in black :) my national colours are so eeeeeasy
I find it so confusing that in football you are the All Whites though!
white is the perfect alternate colour to black though :D
Always fun to see who is talking to who: http://t.co/fbgnPRt
Hehe it is!
Also Trulli is smiling again. That's twice in one weekend now
Another view of the same thing: http://yfrog.com/kg304gj
Vettel is kissy kissy.
Yaaaay Rubens and Jenson and Webber :)
JYS is being proper shunned!
http://twitpic.com/5o1tyt
Although I'm glad thanks to Redbullspyf1 I know now who Prince Harry is because they clarified that he is royalty, phew :)
I would definitely leave my house for Harry, I did not leave my house for his dad :D
Sounds like rain is arriving at Silverstone

That's a race I'm going to have to watch again, kicking myself for not having an early night last night after the really late one the day before.. DVD of 24 kept me up late again! So woke up late, missed the start and was in a doze for most of it, just had a shower which kickstarted me. Missing things because something gets in the way is annoying, missing something because its your own fault doubly so..
At least I'll be good to go for the IndyCar later, that track is fun.
ehehe!!
'@F1_Girl
Good on @pauldirestaf1 for playing maracas for EJ and his band lol #Silverstone'
:)
Do you get points for playing maracas
yes! #rankings
:) The Silverstone post-race party is great, even if you happen to be stuck a couple of hundred metres away due to the sheer volume!
Ping: http://sidepodcast.com/post/britain-2011-rate-the-race
Considering that under UK law Lewis cannot be forced into doing 14 days in a row (for any amount of money), I'm not surprised he's a bit annoyed. But such are the perils of working with such a well-funded, regimented, popular team about to embark upon its home race...
Must be the aching wrists from all those autograph... ;)
Also, happy birthday Nick!
The trick is to make sure your car is parked on the opposite end of Silverstone village (or further afield) and walk in each day. Really good for the constitution and makes getting around much easier.
ohh that is a good plan. I don't think i could let the traffic put me off going. it may be a nightmare but totally worth it if i was ever in the paddock!
@manipef1- McLaren have been fined €5,000 for Button's unsafe release. #F1
oh i wish it was more... #bitter
Fair enough
:D
In SMS lingo, I'd say...
K.
:D
That makes sense. I'm sure McLaren will learn from this.
Wish I could say Force India would learn from their pit error - that's the second time in under a year they've had a major kerfuffle due to having the wrong driver's tyres out :(
Don't be too harsh on the guy - he must be feeling horrible right now. Kinda like the guy who left the cooling device in Button's radiator at Monaco last year.
not that i'm biased.. :)
i see Lotus didn't have a Spark tweeter today. They should've let you in.
i know.. but it doesn't help me like them.. :)
catherine raises a fair point:
Why the heck did they build the a43 if 99% of people can't get on it from their car parks?! I'm embarrassed to be English!!!
Catherine who?
Well, as a welshman, I can only look on and tut. ;)
her earlier tweet tells me they didn't leave asap after he retired :D
#Silverstone have outdone themselves with the traffic, it's gonna be at least 1hr from the circuit to Whittlebury Hall which is under 1mile.
soz. heikki's other half.
gasp!
Hehe. I thought it might be, but comments need more information :)
they go back to whittlebury hall? ooh, wonder how long for...
i know!! the post saying which days only said fri/sat i assumed they had someone awesome and famous for sunday but no.. Remember Mike saying something about only taking note of people who contacted them a few times?.. well i contacted them 3 times in total (weeks before the GP and everything) and i blog.. and tweet and everything... what more did they want from me!! :(
#commentfail
what?!
Because it was supposed to make it easier to get to the circuit and stop the stupid situation of 30000 people leaving Silverstone on a gravel path!
its such an awesome idea but they implement it horribly 99% of the time.
unreal.
i feel hard done by ;) the comp was only open for friday/sat.. no idea why :(
they're either not having one at all, or they're having someone whos a guest/sponsor of their team while still trumpeting about how its a fan thing.
orrr they have the same person.. :(
i wonder if the spark team would accept someone for another race.. if i get a weekend in the paddock i'll pay flights and hotels. it's worth being uber poor for while at uni.
would either of you be interested in writing a post about how they could improve it? i could take a shot, but am quite busy this week.
i kind of hope they don't have one at korea because i'm being selfish and i dont want anyone else sharing my awesome fan-access space. except pamela :D
i dont want to write mean things about the team that could still take my pass away. get back to me after korea :D
hehehe every part of me wants to enter that mclaren thing cause then you'd be one end of the paddock with pamela and i'd be with mclaren*
*of course i'd have to win, which wont happen cause i can't do driving games.
Race review PONG:
http://gridwalktalk.wordpress.com/2011/07/10/british-grand-prix-2011-never-too-late-to-back-off/
Ohh, there is more pinging rather than ponging I assure
Perhaps they had someone in mind for Sunday and they didn't show up for some reason? (I'm trying to look on the brighter side here).
we need to find a way to cheat.
i don't wanna be mean about them in case that stops them giving me the spark thing at one time in the future.. or just makes me dislike me....
how do you cheat on that kinda game anyways?
#notcrashteamracing :(
nooo idea, but there must be a way we can get a(nother) sidepodperson to korea!
and now i am actually going to go to sleep, i made it to bed after the forum, but the laptop stayed on. night all :)
:D haha i'm sure one sidepodperson out there is good at gaming!!
sleep well Amy!
Night
@adamcooperf1
#F1 Did you see @LewisHamilton's stewards' joke on the BBC? Just after he said it a McLaren person told Lee McKenzie not to run it...
goodness me, paranoid Mclaren.
It was a funny joke as well, nothing really biting at the stewards or anything!
After Lewis's last joke I can understand it
Crazy. Don't McLaren understand why they were badly burned last time? It wasn't because they criticized the stewards...
problem is even if he is more relaxed like this and just have some fun (almost as if it was directed at himself as a joke) whenever he says something McLaren are gonna panic now.
Do not meddle in the affairs of stewards, Lewis, for you are crunchy and taste good with paperwork...
If that's not why, then why were they so badly burned? Most of the flak I heard was precisely due to the steward criticism (because the humour fell flat in a fair few quarters)...
I had to go during the race, and just got back.
Was reading the FBFB for the report from after I left until finish, when I saw
I read it first as old man straight - interesting mental image I had for a moment! :)
Good afternoon :)
Christine, are you here?
I'll do tomorrow's daily, no?
If you're happy to do that, yes!
Hehehe.
Yes I am, I just wanted the confirmation hehe
Guys, I am translating Red Bull's press statement.
How would you define "massive moment"?
A short period of time of some significance.
On the approach into Copse with about 4 laps left, Webber and Vettel to within inches of wiping each other out - it was a massive moment
Unless it was a driver speaking it, in which case it means that driver nearly (but not quite) went off somewhere, possibly due to losing grip at an inopportune moment.
Suffice to say, my jaw nearly hit the floor
massive in this sense - I think the best word might be 'significant'
It might be. Red Bull probably wouldn't think that was cool enough or something...
Thanks everyone :) You've helped me a lot!
http://community.codemasters.com/forum/f1-2011-general-discussion-1403/468580-possible-f1-2011-acheivements-6.html
Go down to the revealed list of achievements for F1 2011 and count down to number 24. May be unofficial confirmation that the safety car is in the final gamee.
I'd say nearly taking eachother out would have been significant
Only saying it that way, because I think Marti is trying to translate from English -> Spanish. Trying to give him an idea of the colloquial use of 'massive' in this sense.
I personally like this achievement:
Fair enough
:)
Yes, Webber said that, speaking about his strange move at Becketts, when he went across the grass. He said "that was a massive moment".
Justin Wilson's brother, Stefan, just won his first Indy Lights race at Toronto
there is a sense of "tension filled" in that statement as well.
Every time I hear of Justin Wilson, I think of this guy, he was a favorite of my dad's. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justin_Wilson_(chef)
Woohoo!
Horner about the lasts laps:
Hello.
In have a friend staying who had VIP (The swine) access with Mercedes for the race today.
We took him down to Red Bull for him to see the factory....and got invited in to look at the trophies in reception!!!!
I have pics to share (uploading....)
Two drivers from the same team who've worked together for 2.5 years should have enough sense not to put each other in the fence, but there's quite a bit on the topic in "Should Red Bull have let their drivers race for 2nd?"

Here's the same car rolled out for a similar demonstration drive 10 years ago, but the Ferrari driver was different back then. ;)
http://www.motorsport.com/#/all/photo/main-gallery/?id=9951
Interesting and slightly troubling that D. Patrick is becoming a one name celeb, like Madonna and Prince. She's the only driver you listed by first name only.
Not criticizing you directly Leigh. I bet you didn't even notice it. It's just something that's caught my eye more and more the past couple months.
BTW, Alonso looks silly doing the demonstration drive with a KERS device on. Surely that would be useless in this car?
Depends on what attachments the seat has.
That was deliberate - you type "Patrick" and goes over people's heads. Say "Danica" and everyone knows instantly. Sometimes do the same for TK, Helio and Dario
It's a 1951 Ferrari 375. ;)
Has the seat been modified at all?
Not that I can see, no.
Fair nuff. I'm noticing it in other places as well though. Here I mostly take it as shorthand and slang amongst people who are all on the same relative level of knowledge and understanding for the sport.

what KERS device?
I have trouble with Wilson, but that's because 2 of them are doing well on the American scene now (Stefan Wilson, Justin's brother, won his first Indy Lights race today).
Then HANS (which I assume is what you meant) would be just plain silly...
It's more that "Patrick" is a very generic surname. Franchitti, Kanaan, Castroneves all stand out.
HAHA! Yes, I meant HANS. :D
I would normally never say Stefan Wilson does well
;)
Not normally (not least because Indy Lights is rarely a topic of discussion here), but I think in future you might be more often ;)
I doubt it
;)
Wonder why he wore a HANS when there are no belts. It must just rattle around the whole time
indeed. is it permanently attached to the helmet now?
Is HANS at all effective on it's own? Does it need some sort of "docking" or harness connection in the cockpit to make it fully effective, or does it offer a degree of protection (or complete protection) just from the helmet and shoulder structure provided?
Oh wait - green flag at Toronto is not for another hour...
I doubt it
It needs the dock, otherwise it's just extra weight. Maybe Fernando didn't want the extra hassle of detaching and re-attaching it.
It needs to be held in place with seat belts to do anything. Otherwise it will just hit the back of the helmet in an accident
I foresee an hour or two lost in researching this and all of the related (ohh that's interesting, must go on that sidetrack) involved in looking into HANS and exactly how it works.
Program starts now - race in an hour? We had that issue before
they didn't let massa have a go? :(
f1minute ping: http://www.f1minute.com/news/fernando-alonso-takes-surprise-win-at-british-grand-prix
(pinging for christine, as she's now gone off to cook!)
actually, after seeing the handling, i can guess why.
what tv channel is that? i can see what alonso had to run to catch up with the parade truck.
La Sexta - the Spanish F1 broadcaster
and they broadcast all of that build up?
Hey guys, how was the forum?
Just finished watching the F1 race on tape delay...thank you Fox. Pretty good race, Anyone but Vettel. Anyone going to be commenting on the Indycar race?
watching the build-up now
I think they just pick and choose, but yeah, it's live. If you think that's a lot of buildup, you should see their MotoGP coverage.
No BS, 50 minutes till green flag?
Very good. Powerhouse guest lineup (Walker! Hill! Horner! Mansell!) and lots of banter.
Looks like, yeah. But I may go watch TG after the start.
TG?
Top Gear. :)
Got it. I'll retire to my room and stay in the chat
yep
Okay, I'm back now and I have 35 mins
Nice one :)
Will there be an IndyCar thread?
i'm not doing one - am lying down
Watching the spot on Hinchcliffe, pretty funny guy
Ace chap.
I don't really have time to write a proper one but I can do something very very short if it is needed
happy for people to stick in the daily. whatever suits really.
am not sure too many are watching to be honest
Right, I'll go and cook some dinner then :)
Sure, this is fine. So I don't have to change threads, I'll let you all know it was a very interesting GP, what I saw of it. It was on Fox which is a 2 hour commercial for what is comming on later in the week. But a good race, rated at 8.75
ughhh... beekus - krosnoff's accident had noting to do with blocking - what an awful rewrite of history
:/
Probably trying to justify the bizarre rule
Can't believe they would say that
A very poor attempt from what was a tragic, tragic accident.
Did anyone else notice Simona's poor practice times and a fairly good recovery in qualy
Missed much of the weekend to be honest
Here we go: The Trophy Cabinet
Austalian GP Winners trophy
Monaco GP 2006 3rd Place for David Coulthard
The Constructors Trophy Amazing history on there
So I got this one for Lou and Lukeh
Second and 3rd Place in Canada this year (As JB won :D )
Last Years' British GP winners trophy for Mark "Not bad for a number 2" Webber
The extra cabinet as they're running out of room in reception!
And finally the car hanging on the wall
Can't believe they let us in to look at is all, stunning reception and very honoured to get to look at the trophies and bits of history on display.
<3
i reckon that worthy of a guest post...
Broken link?
Definitely.
Seconded.
Same as the previous link. Copy and paste error I assume
Hope they include a fly-by by the Snowbirds
Nope, just half our air-force!
Command to fire-up is coming soon
I guess only F1 rates the Snowbirds.
Hey, Bert hows Montreal?
This is my feed..http://www.firstrowsports.eu/watch/72606/5/watch-indy-grand-prix-toronto-.html
Apologies
I can do that for you Mr C. Would it be churlish to ask "How to contact Sidepodcast ;) " I'll type something up tomorrow.
i kill you!
;)
Looking forward to race - this track is fabulous
:)
we got nothing this year.. surly due to the weather.
Started out clear and now is overcast 25-26 degrees. Bobby Rahal has his classic car buddies up at Tremblant. Very nice turn out, with some spectacular cars. Was there on Friday, as usual.
Christine, you have an email :)
Ackroyd giving it a bit of welly there
Bumpy streets, concrete walls, this is a knife fight :)
I do indeed, although I think it might be missing an attachment.

Laughing Out Loud http://youtu.be/plWnm7UpsXk
Received now :)
Kanaan around :(
smash - TK in the walll
I missed the start
aaaahhh... briscoe should have got off the throttle though
Briscoe steered slightly left very sharply like he had slight oversteer
I heard the start but I didn't see it, buffering
or stuttering rather
Good feed http://www.justin.tv/besweeet10#/w/1452531568
Ouch - Kanaan is angry
Did I miss much, had to deal with a kid with a stingray sting. Treated and sent to hospital.
Briscoe tapped TK into a spin
Danica and Sato
More of a crash than a spin. TK getting lippy about Briscoe
Oh Sato you scamp!
I'm impressed there was no full course caution
For those not into IndyCar, the TG ep with Vettel is on now, but I'll watch that later
Agree
NASCAR needs to learn how to do this for their road course races.
Danica
He hit me so hard my jaw hit my mouth
WHy is she racing with her mouth open?
Maybe talking on the radio? She does like talking on the radio.
That track is incredibly tight from the onboard
Because she's DANICA. Goddess of racing [/sarcasm]
kind of like a wide Monaco, without the glitz
If her mouth is open that tells you the track is not too bumpy because when it is you clamp your mouth shut and when you stop you find you have a really sore jaw
Don't raise the ire of the Torontonians! Or are you willingly starting a flame war?
YELLOW
Tags in the barrier?
Bad news for the top 4
Perfect for Dario
Helio involved in another incident
Boo Helio, seems to be punting a few people this year
Adding to the tally...
Schumacheresque
is this going to be the first double file restart today?
Speaking of which, Vettel's on!
No they've done one (or two?)
Crazy amount of marbles
Hmmm... Danica is complaining. What a shock.
each and every one
Clarkson jinxed Vettel! Congratulated him on "his win this afternoon." Although he said all sorts of stuff to cover every eventuality.
:D
something in common with F1. I think we might see a different winner today...just a feeling
It's common in all motorsports with such high downforce and weight pressures
Gawd, Vettel was literally a kid when he met Schumi. :O
Worse now than it has been in years
my point. Hinchcliffe and Tracy down
Jakes spun out
Wow - how did Tracy save that!?
Great that Hinch didn't back off against the man who never backs off
YELLOW
Jakes looked lonely out there
Jakes spins. What a shock.
Damn, Hinchcliffe had a great run going
To be honest Tracy was on the outside through 6 - the onus was on him to back out to avoid the accident
Wildly optimistic by Tracy and equally wildly optimistic that he would be smart enough to back out
Hahaaa
:D
I saw the cars going around a street sweeper, should help the marbles
Good segment with Vettel - he can give a funny interview. :)
True, but it makes each caution longer
Green
Nice move Justin Wilson
Wilson p2
:)
How can RHR be P3? He had no front wing a few minutes ago
Because he's awesome.
Wing is still hanging off
he hasn't pitted for a new wing yet
These cars are tanks. An F1 front wing would have ripped itself off already
YELLOW
Bourdais and Tracy
Something inevitable about that
Bourdais and Tracy again!!
Fisticuffs, perhaps?
I was thinking so until the replay showed Meira
Paul Tracy = moron
aging driver making desperate moves, hmmm
Always has been
Rahal leads from Viso and Power after stops
A lot people believe Tracy should have a full time drive. On the basis of today's drive, I wouldn't even give him a race.
Simona up to 4th. Pitted just after the sloppy restart. What is the fuel window?
Marginal to the end from here I think
That is so so cool Adie. Love the Brawn winners bit :) that'll be there forever! yay!
Has ted news been shared?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/formula_one/14100018.stm
Great move Tag
no
Wow - Tags unlaps himself around the outside of t3
Briscoe out
With Conway
with Conway.. :(
What an awful race for Briscoe
Conway speared Briscoe
Full course
YELLOW
Dario and Power
Dario hits Power !!
Crikey, championship rivals
Power thought he was clear ahead and he wasn't
Dario, green drive through penalty.
Penalty for that is very harsh
Franchitti wasn't alongside but had his nose in, Power thought he was okay to turn in. Dario's attempt seemed a little half-hearted, either go for it or back out..
Agreed
Well... this title hunt is really hotting up now. The post-race interviews will be interesting.
I love that we may see a new winner this year
Also a penalty for Conway
Awwww, no Ted at the grand prix for the next few races.
Right now, my money (not that I have any) is Wilson...
Fair enough but it was a racing incident. We have seen cars rammed all day but that was just racing
That is deserved
Shame for Viso...
@TonyKanaan
Dario and Conway get a penalty?!?? Am I missing something on my incident?
Exactly
And other incidents
Sato rammed Danica and no penalty
Race Control changed their mind !?! What !!!
Indycar reversing itself on the Dario drive through
Good politicking by Chip
I think they were both deserved although it could be argued Power could've left room. Now they changed their minds! You can't change your mind!
Agree that other incidents should be penalised if these are.
Crazy.
I think the new decision is the correct one but you can't announce a penalty then rescind it
YELLOW
Al jr and Cottman reviewed it, then went to Barnhardt and said it was a racing incident
Power in the wall
Power in the tyres now - wow
Curiouser and curiouser:
@curtcavin
I've been listening to the director's channel. There was NEVER a call for a penalty for Dario. Not sure where Versus got that.
Hard hit from behind on Power
Versus making their own calls
Tags hit Power
Briscoe has something flapping on his nose around the number. Looks like a cable or something
I guess all these yellow laps mean fuel won't be an issue for anyone
Bit of a stop-start race.
I think Dario will gobble up Rahal
Rahal looked like he was not interested in going two wide on the restart
Dirty move, says Power
Will Power not happy at all. Very angry in fact.
got another yellow lap, saving fuel
Power: "Man does this guy ever get a penalty? I always race him clean, he always races me dirty"
First time I have ever heard anyone accuse Dario of dirty driving
Very vocal about Tags too
Now Michael Andretti blaming the Ganassis on fluffing the restarts to save fuel!
You would think the Ganassi guys were all wearing targets today
Danica, Jakes and Tags
Jakes and Tags
Watching IndyCar again now - they don't even remotely look like double-file.
Have these guys forgotten how to drive today?
Cautions beget cautions.
Danica wearing her helmet was in muffled tones, I think complaining
...but this is getting moronic though
:D
Danica out of nose wings, they're putting one of Marco's wings on. It clashes a bit
Oh golly, that's one ugly front wing
Red on green - ughhh
Justin Wilson this time
Green for ten seconds
Last. Man. STANDING!
BIG crash
Watching top gear on the iplayer
really really want to see ferrari and mclaren racing each other in red & orange one day
Another pile-up?? Oh c'mon guys, now you're being amateurs !!
Wilson
Servia
Conway
Kimball
and someone else
B&W at Futureshop.... ugh.... What did Drederick Tatum say about Springfield?
Wow! never seen that sirt of long-cut
Good day for Dallara. They must have made a fortune on replacement bits today
@TonyKanaan: Did we all need to go back to driving school or something?
It would seem so
:D
Versus are reading sidepodcast
The Meistro speaks!!
He is rarely wrong
The Toronto Indy is just trying to upstage Montreal by having it's pace car lead more laps and come out more times than at our F1 race.
Isn't he considered a friend of INDYCAR? He's done some publicity work for them, no?
#IndyCar loses talent
Rahal this time
But he's always been honest about things
Can you blame DFR on accidents in 3? Sure, the first corner stuff, but not anything after 1-2.
Not when hardly anyone went two wide anyway.
To be fair, they barely look like DFRs at the line.
Werd! Perhaps they need a DRF for ovals only? Then have a better system to control the leader speed until the green is given.
Amazingly, Briscoe is P7
Speaking of overtake assists..... perhaps banning them on the first lap of a restart... preventing banzai moves?
Dario wins
Ganassi 1-2
I don't think it's that. I think a lot of drivers ran out of talent today
signing off, see you at the next race
Bye Joe
Ala DRS? Sounds good.
Anyway, time for bed. NASCAR-V8-GP2-F1-IndyCar-TG - lotsa great racing today! Night. :)
See ya
There is the Daytona running at Laguna!
Night Journeyer
ALMS too. Big weekend. :)
Bye Joe
Oh yeah, and I watched that too! :D
Al Unser Jr confirming that there never was a penalty for Dario
Al Jr, you're speaking nonsense. He essentially blamed most of the accidents on the driver ahead in each case.
Dario saying he's sorry about the contact with Power, he doesn't want to race like that..
Claiming more than 50% of the blame
Drivers have to give each other racing room. And nowadays they don't and get away with not doing it
Yes, but when the guy behind is nowhere near making a realistic pass, then the foot needs to be slammed down.
TK agrees with me
;)
Power had plenty room and he moved across even though Dario was there. Regardless of the rights or wrongs of it he should not put himself in a position where he is relying on the other guy to do something to avoid contact.
Not sure I agree - they were so far around, Dario should've conceeded
I think Dario was just backing out of the position slowly so that he was not wasting fuel or working his car too hard. I don't understand why Power moved across when he had room and his position was in no danger.
@MikeConwayIndy
So Sorry to @RyanBriscoe6 for that complete brain fade on my part.....missed my braking point! tough day at the office was messy out there!
right folks - i'm off
goood night
:)
night
An honest racing driver. That's unusual
Night
Steph from @MoreFrontWing has a media pass and she asked IndyCar about penalties:
Just got clarification on penalties from INDYCAR. There was never a penalty issued by Race Control to 10 car. TV jumped the gun, I was told. All incidents at turn 3 were reviewed and ruled no penalty because they were all a matter of outside cars not giving enough room on inside.
Eeeeeevening :D
Latest night EVER......
It's not that late
It is if that's me getting in from work :( :( :(
Poor Nick thought I'd died or something.
True
He is just looking for brownie points. He probably forgot all about you
:O :O :O
Poor birthday boy. He's not that interested in brownie points tbh.
Didn't know it was his birthday
Over the hill :D
:D
Does Force India get anything in Christine's Rankings for Vijay Mallya apologising to the team's fans for the way the team raced today?
