Hi everyone.  I do hope you are all OK.  I’ve been rather a busy boy in the last week – enjoying the one good week of weather that Copenhagen has, then I went to the Copenhagen Classic Grand Prix.  Sadly I have had so many pictures to process that none of the ones promised will be ready until next week – where I promise a bumper edition of pictures ;)

We had a great time at the CCGP – it was held on closed roads around a big park in town and was organised really well.  There were some fantastic and rare cars on display, which looked and sounded awesome.  We had all the usual classes, with cars racing from 1947 to 1981.  We saw Morgans, Jags, Ferraris, Alfas, Ford Escorts, Volvos, Porsches, more Porsches, and even some oddballs like a Mk. I Golf and an Opel Ascona.

But the best racing of the day were the Legends – Hot-rod style plastic bodied cars powered by 1000cc Motorcycle engines.  The drivers in those races didn’t give an inch and when the winning driver forcefully overtook into the lead on the last corner of the last lap, there were massive cheers.

Also, because we had VIP tickets, I managed to bump into Emanuele Pirro at lunch in the marquee – he’s a super nice guy and we had a nice little chat.  But the funniest thing was that a few places behind in the queue was HKH Prince Joachim of Denmark, who’s a keen racing driver.  A prince queuing for his food though!  Who would have thought it?

We all had a great time and finished the day off eating a meal by one of Copenhagen’s lakes :)

Links

F1’s a bit quiet right now, but I have found a few interesting things for you.  Of course, we should start with Christine’s Driver and Team Rankings, followed by her Tweets of the Week

Lara Platman of photofeature has posted her excellent Spa 24 Hours report – she really caught the essence of Endurance Racing, I thought.

VivaF1 have another Blogger’s Swap Shop running and it looks like a corker – remember to file your posts before Saturday, people!

Nick Heidfeld has posted pictures of the entries to his helmet design competition – and they are really quite interesting.  WTF1 has collected some great photoshops from the AUTOSPORT forums of Nick jumping, too :D

The Circuit of the Americas have posted a time lapse video of the construction work for July – keep it up, we can’t wait for the Grand Prix!

BadgerGP has some great ways to pass the summer break, but it’s not that long anyway, so keep calm and carry on!

Steven has found some obligatory Sidepodspace info for us – there’s a meteor shower on the way, which sounds cool :)

Look what this man does to his wife’s Ferrari California – Mrs Goat would kill me if I did that!

The 2012 Indycar has begun testing at Mid-Ohio this week – Racecar Engineering has the scoop for us…

Finally here’s some awesome wave photography from Hawaii – I adore these pics and I have no idea how he gets them!

So that’s all from me – I’m off Go Karting tonight, so wish me luck and I’ll see you in the comments!

The glacier cruise I went on did not get that close to it. It was a different line than the one in the video. I wanted to see what would happen when that wave got to the boat. They didn't look ready for that, either. sheesh.

Legends races are always great. I don't think I have ever seen a bad one.

    Hi Steven,

    How are you this evening?

Hi Leigh. Things still quiet, I hope.

I think if they had been much closer the ice would have flattened the boat

Yep - everything's been absolutely silent. Nothing going down at all thankfully.

I'm good. How is your part of the world?

  • Leigh O'Gorman09/08/2011 at 23:20

Took a nap this evening and no disturbances and local businesses stayed open for the most part

  • Leigh O'Gorman09/08/2011 at 23:22

Finally watching IndyCar from the weekend - I can't understand how poor the direction of the broadcasts are. These shows could be so much better if only for that.

What do you think of the announcers, assuming you see the Versus feed?

  • Leigh O'Gorman09/08/2011 at 23:28

What do you think of the announcers, assuming you see the Versus feed?

Versus do the world feed - can't stand them. It's all too "buddy buddy" and chuckles in the booth. There is absolutely zero tension anywhere over the course of each race weekend, which pretty much nullifies every broadcast.

The tension is not something anyone can fake, but it would be so much better for the TV show if they had commentators who actually sounded passionate about what they were seeing.

  • Leigh O'Gorman09/08/2011 at 23:29

By the way, my feed came from Canal + (a French channel)

  • Leigh O'Gorman09/08/2011 at 23:33

...and the other thing. If F1 could manage timing splits for qualifying by 1990, then surely IndyCar could attempt it now.

There's no idea anyone is doing better or where they're running at all, because it's only recently that IndyCar put any qualifying timings on screen at all.

  • Leigh O'Gorman09/08/2011 at 23:33

eh? timings wer awesome last year, what happened?

I thought maybe I was being too hard on them, so I wanted your opinion. That main dude, Bob Jenkins is just clueless!

I don't like them at all.

  • Kai09/08/2011 at 23:37

There's no idea anyone is doing better or where they're running at all, because it's only recently that IndyCar put any qualifying timings on screen at all.

yeah, it's awful. I really don't like the coverage. There's NO value in it.

  • Leigh O'Gorman09/08/2011 at 23:38

I thought maybe I was being too hard on them, so I wanted your opinion. That main dude, Bob Jenkins is just clueless!

In saying that, I've seen the same type of "buddy buddy" commentary in NASCAR. I just think it sucks all life from the broadcast and makes it difficult to watch. Even Legard is excitable compared to Jenkins.

eh? timings wer awesome last year, what happened?

They only showed timings on the website, but not in the actual TV broadcast (they would occasionally show a name with their best lap underneath). There are still no sector splits at all in the series.

They started showing laps early this year and it was described as an "innovation" by the series.

  • Jordan F109/08/2011 at 23:38

Look what this man does to his wife’s Ferrari California – Mrs Goat would kill me if I did that!

Gavin, if the two of you could really afford that car - not only have everything thing else paid of, all the food you can eat, the insurance, the fuel (gotta be the top -grade stuff), and the tyres for those things, and goto the F1 races with your pic of seat - everything she is not going to care a bit as you will have a matching set, ya frickin' oil sheik!

  • Mr C09/08/2011 at 23:38

ahh right, so why not watch the splits online?

  • Leigh O'Gorman09/08/2011 at 23:40

ahh right, so why not watch the splits online?

Because I'm only catching the broadcast now. They don't have sector splits online either. Just a map to show where they are on circuit with the full laptimes

so, now i'm wondering if michael stipe is from the future/an alien...

I have a somewhat job interview related dilemma in that it still looks like Pamela might not be able to come to Korea and my backup friend can't come if she gets the job she interviewed for today. Any of you lot able to get to Melbourne in October? :(

It seems cold and calculating than that you have developed something called "backup friends".....

They are humans, not server tapes !

  • Alex Andronov10/08/2011 at 14:04

It just means that I will be available when a better job comes along. #thinkpositive

    Good thinking.

Remember you are brillskills. If they didn't want you - there's something wrong with them and you don't want to work there.

So you have either cloned your friend or I hope your "backup friend" profits from this. He charge you for renting out his friendship.....

Oldly enough the idea of a "mercency friend" does not seem to bother me so much.....

Careful Amy, I was already quoting from lines from the Police Chief in Blade Runner, you would not want me to send out Alex to retire your friend's clone after the Korean GP, now would you?

Oh you can get right up close and personal with the cars when they are in their garages, not so much the Renault F1 showcar though. Last year there were about half a dozen of the grandstands open so you could just choose your spot. There wasn't too much in the way of catering and souvenir shops but there was a Renault store that sold clothing and other goodies

  • Journeyer10/08/2011 at 16:24

I think the BBC looked at and wet themselves at the prospect of C4 doing a better job!

    FTA:

Plus we’d been warned in advance that although the exacting leader of F1 might be difficult to impress, disappointing him would be a cinch.

Sounds like Bernie, all right. :D

    Some other points:

    1. No red button hideaways? Unless they were planning to become an F1 network on Sunday, I don't see how that would be workable.

    2. Ad-funded content. Well, I guess it's better than a paywall.

    3. Educational outreach through F1 Academy projects - well, good on them.

    4. Highlights shows: from Vettel to Hamilton? That's not such a wide range, is it?

    5. 20 hours of archive shows: That would be a treat! If they could pay for it.

    Great find, RCC!

  • Journeyer10/08/2011 at 16:24

Everything else is secondary to the cash, though, isn't it?

Even if it was the best thing we'd ever seen, people would still have hated the ads though.

I think people would've lived with it if somehow this got announced today, after everything we went through with Sky. Even less would mind if they can adopt a split-screen approached (such as that used in Spain) for ads.

    1. No red button hideaways? Unless they were planning to become an F1 network on Sunday, I don't see how that would be workable.

There's a great one in New Scientist this week....

I use an amazing site recently reading up on all the Apollo missions..

That seems designed to fail, why have the hovering thing (which looks really unstable) if you're just going to fling it away and crash it?

That seems designed to fail, why have the hovering thing (which looks really unstable) if you're just going to fling it away and crash it?

They do that so that it lands on the surface on its wheels then they can blast away the retro rocket module. THe retro module is there to slow the landing speed. Without it the whole thing would just get buried in the soil. THe hovering is an optical illusion. Think of it as being a parachute that can be detached as soon as contact is made with the surface and does not get tangled up with the mission
