This is it, my final daily post before I head off into the sunset... for a few days. I am leaving you in the capable hands of Mr C, and that should be scary for us all. No mention of pandas, or Franck, or Le Seb. How will you all cope? Oh well, here's what we're discussing at the moment:

  • Bernie reckons McLaren could get a ban, especially considering they are "up in court" for the second time on a similar charge. James Allen also suggests that as the hearing is just before the British GP, it would make for some spectacular headlines. Oh dear.
  • Speaking of the British race, Donington Park is due for another FIA inspection soon, and track boss Simon Gillett says this nugget: "When you work with the likes of Tilke to run your FIA submissions and track safety, you have got to say that you are betting on the right horses." Oh dear.
  • Finally, we are all still pondering this Renault Roadshow crash, mostly because is it even possible to go so vastly off, seconds after starting in what can only be described as a straight line? Looks like a scary accident, but how was it even possible? Oh dear.

With those happy thoughts, I bid you adieu. I'll still be popping up in the comments from time to time, and I may post the odd picture to drop.io, just to make sure you don't forget me. Therefore, I will sign off with: Mr C will see you in the comments.

Ooo well have a nice time - assuming that it is a 'nice time' sort of trip and not a 'stuck in a large hall with 400+ other people whilst a man stands up at the front and tells us about the company/product' sort of trip...

... oh gord - please don't tell us that you are off on the Tim Robbins weekend? (york uni.../?)

  • Steven Roy10/04/2009 at 00:44

okay… so i just googled yoda…he is green… that’s not the extent of my knowledge of him.

He is not very big. His own grammar rules...he has. And he is head Jedi which is the fastest growing religion in Britain.

  • Dom10/04/2009 at 00:44

    :shakes head:

I mean the prequel trilogy fair enough, they were bad. But the originals are classics.

  • Joe10/04/2009 at 00:46

In the unlikely event of anyone here being a Green Day fan, there's a song or 2 from the new album leaked.

    jedi's?

  • Steven Roy10/04/2009 at 00:48

i was trying to move away from the subject… cause i’ve very little clue about this yoda person and i feel like i’ve missed something massive..

it's fair to say episode iv was a seminal moment in movie making history, yes.

Just possibly the biggest movie series of the 20th Century, but don't worry about it.

  • Steven Roy10/04/2009 at 00:49

    It does?!?

What was wrong with my explanation? I thought I covered everything that had to be said. Short Jedi, talks funny.

  • RG10/04/2009 at 00:49

    jedi’s?

Uh-hu, every single day all they talk about...

haha Darth Vader is the guy in the mask right?… i think i know that much.. oh and Ewan McGregor was in one of the star wars films wasn’t he? that’s literally all i know.

Its confusing because the original 3 films are actually episodes 4,5 and 6 then the Ewan McGregor films are pre-quels and they was supposed to another 3 which are episodes 7,8 and 9 but they are not going to make them now which is insane.

Ewan McGregor played Obe Wan Kenobe who was played by Sir Alex Guinness in the original

so.... it's better to watch them in a strange order?

  • me10/04/2009 at 01:01

so…. it’s better to watch them in a strange order?

    it's better to only watch 4, 5, 6.

  • Pat W10/04/2009 at 01:02

so…. it’s better to watch them in a strange order?

TV channels usually air them in the sequence they were made. 4,5,6,1,2,3

I personally prefer the episode number order because the story makes more sense.

  • Pat W10/04/2009 at 01:02

    it’s better to only watch 4, 5, 6.

    This is true.

Ewan McGregor isn't in those though?

  • Journeyer10/04/2009 at 01:03

Nope. He's in 1, 2, 3, along with Natalie Portman.

TV channels usually air them in the sequence they were made. 4,5,6,1,2,3

I personally prefer the episode number order because the story makes more sense.

I'll add to this: if you start with ep1 (the 1st of the later ones) it'll put you off watching the rest.

  • Steven Roy10/04/2009 at 01:04

so…. it’s better to watch them in a strange order?

Watch them in the order they were released even though that is not the chronological order of the story. Although it would be interesting to see what saw them in story order made of them because the things that the rest of us knew when we saw the pre-quels you won't so that must change things.

  • Lukeh10/04/2009 at 01:05

Im so sorry star wars fans

Todays question from me, does anyone have the direct link to the .flv files on f1.com for the 2009 videos? I have all the 2008 ones but my technical knowledge is limited and I can't seem to get the 2009 ones in the same way.

You'll have to be smart about this.

    1. Use IE and access the site as normal. When they ask you to choose which vid you want to watch, choose the vid you want to DL.

    2. Let the video finish loading completely.

    3. Once loaded, you may or may not watch it. What matters is that the whole video downloaded completely.

    4. Go to the Temporary Internet Files folder of your computer. If you don't know where it is, use the Tools -> Options box to open the folder.

    5. Sort by date accessed/modified and look for the latest FLV file available. That should be your video. Copy it to wherever you want to save it.

Disclaimer: This should only be done for personal use, as per the agreement with FOM before the video page.

Let me know if it works!

Looked at it myself - it seems to be trickier now; the file is no longer stored on your HD, just streamed from somewhere else.

You may need a stream recorder for this.

I think it depends on where you qualify really. If you're down the order somewhat, everyone else around you will think they have nothing to lose by using KERS, so you're at a a disadvantage if you don't use it yourself.

Furthermore your Mclaren is one of the most reliable cars on the grid, so problems should be few and far between.

On the one hand I think not running KERS in Malaysia may be more of a disadvantage than it was in Australia.

On the other we did see two KERS-related incidents, one resulting in retirement. 2 incidents out of 10 cars running KERS means 20% though.

I'm not sure what I'll be doing just yet. Partly depends on how I do in quali.

(And Mr C, sorry to have to tell you this, but April 29 puts the hearing just before Spain rather than just before Britain. Just as well since I haven’t sorted out my tickets yet…;)

James Allen, who I think Christine was quoting, was saying that Britain was only 3 races after the hearing which could be included in the ban. The thinking going that Honda got a three race ban for the hidden fuel tank. One was retroactive. However the Marshals have already thrown McLaren out of Australia so his thinking was that it would be three new races. Taking it up to Britain.

Just did practice then, went better than expected!

It is one of the great mysteries of creative writing. Sometimes you just aren’t in the mood.

True. No wonder journalists (who have to write at least somewhat creatively every day) get paid so much at the peaks of their powers!

  • Jon Waldock10/04/2009 at 11:26

Just did practice then, went better than expected!

    Ooooh, that was good :)

I think we're not going to be winning that many races this year, the Renault is just so slow

Well, we ain't the worst car at the moment...

Yeah, I get what your saying.

  • RG10/04/2009 at 13:03

I know you didn’t ask me specifically, but I’ve done 20 pages of unformatted text so far, which equates to about 40 pages once it’s in correct script style. I’m behind where I want to be, but ahead of the theoretical target page count.

What are you writing about if I mght ask? 40 pages now is bloomin brilliant

  • me10/04/2009 at 13:15

should F1 insiders be the pitterati?

    :D

    From JA's Twitter:

ITV been nominated for a BAFTA for the Brazilian Grand Prix -can we make it 3 in a row? Up against BBC Olympics..will be tough

I think the BBC may actually nick it this time...

  • RG10/04/2009 at 13:26

I think the BBC may actually nick it this time…

Well we did well in the olympics, and we did well in the f1. But I think the olympics we were more successful

  • Journeyer10/04/2009 at 13:26

How very Bernie - the son of one of the leaders of Matra wants to run the race, but Bernie keeps his prices up. For him, France is expendable. After all, he has Korea, India, and Abu Dhabi.

    How nice of him.

  • Journeyer10/04/2009 at 13:27

Well we did well in the olympics, and we did well in the f1. But I think the olympics we were more successful

And I'm think it was actually covered better than F1 - isn't that what the award is supposed to be about? ;)

  • Sean Golding10/04/2009 at 13:30

I'm off folks, I've been up for 19 hours and I'm only running on 3.5 hours sleep. See y'all!

  • Dom10/04/2009 at 13:40

And I’m think it was actually covered better than F1 - isn’t that what the award is supposed to be about? ;)

It should be, but it's not. The last two awards have gone to Hungary 06 (Jenson's first win) and Canada '07 (Lewis's first win).

  • Journeyer10/04/2009 at 13:40

haha :D what a lovely way to get my second ever batracer win ;)

you seem to be paralleling Jenson's career, right down to the numbers! :P

    Slow and lazy.

It should be, but it’s not. The last two awards have gone to Hungary 06 (Jenson’s first win) and Canada ‘07 (Lewis’s first win).

But if the top 2 awards were both winning moments, then how do you judge them? ;)

by the time Christine gets back you're body clock is going to be running on a different time zone isn't it? ;)

  • Lukeh10/04/2009 at 13:48

    Groundhog day... :P

    My thoughts, exactly.

I'm doing my revision in the mornings, and on the odd day in the afternoon. Normally half an hour at a time. With about 7 maths papers my teacher has given me

    and enrolment too…

    how fun...

  • lou10/04/2009 at 13:54

oh yeah, revision, that thing, forgot about that

i wish i could... but the post its of reminders and stuff i have all around my desk and in my room make it hard ;)

i remember GCSE Geography, i made an A3 spider diagram of all the facts for each case study, there was like 14 of them, it took up a whole wall in my room, and when it came to the exam, i totally forgot everything i learn and made them up based on places id been on holiday too.....got a B for it :D hehe

  • Jon Waldock10/04/2009 at 13:56

i hated revising for GCSE Geography... although not as much as i hated revising for Latin.

  • Lukeh10/04/2009 at 13:58

see, just 4 little letters strikes the fear into anyone who’s had to deal with it…

I still get nightmares from the gmail notifier popping up with

'YOUR UCAS TRACKING STATUS HAS CHANGED'

Do not want to see... and the website and service was always horrific trying to find your actual applications to unis.

  • RG10/04/2009 at 13:59

see, just 4 little letters strikes the fear into anyone who’s had to deal with it…

I'm hoping for an overthrow in the British government so alll this changes, no more forms.

pah, latin. i am so glad i never took that, although i took french instead....and now can speak less french than i could before i took the stupid exam

  • Jon Waldock10/04/2009 at 14:00

‘YOUR UCAS TRACKING STATUS HAS CHANGED’

ah yes, my favourite bit is that it dosent tell you whats changed, and sometimes you get them, even when nothing has changed. stupid thing

  • Journeyer10/04/2009 at 14:00

i hated revising for GCSE Geography… although not as much as i hated revising for Latin.

Why did you study Latin? Isn't it a bit of a dead language?

  • Lukeh10/04/2009 at 14:01

Why did you study Latin? Isn’t it a bit of a dead language?

As far as I know latin is pretty good at getting the attention of good universities in the UK.

  • lou10/04/2009 at 14:02

Why did you study Latin? Isn’t it a bit of a dead language?

i don't know :( it seemed like the best option :( oh how wrong i was.

  • Journeyer10/04/2009 at 14:02

As far as I know latin is pretty good at getting the attention of good universities in the UK.

Really...? How odd... Over here, we're not even taught foreign languages until you get to uni, and even then, it's not really a major or anything.

  • Jon Waldock10/04/2009 at 14:03

As far as I know latin is pretty good at getting the attention of good universities in the UK.

depends what subject your applying for to be honest, my brother got into cambridge without a language, and at the time you just couldnt do that

  • Journeyer10/04/2009 at 14:03

i don’t know :( it seemed like the best option :( oh how wrong i was.

I would've studied French (which I did study in uni), or Spanish (which is very close to our language), or, most probably, Italian.

  • Lukeh10/04/2009 at 14:03

Really…? How odd… Over here, we’re not even taught foreign languages until you get to uni, and even then, it’s not really a major or anything.

I don't know if it actually is, but it's just something our old schools uni advisor used to always bang on about (although oru school didnt even teach french let alone latin...)

  • lou10/04/2009 at 14:04

pah, latin. i am so glad i never took that, although i took french instead….and now can speak less french than i could before i took the stupid exam

latin is an evil evil language. just when you think you have grasped it another thing comes along and it can be like starting from the beginning again. very very bad times. however i got myself a B in the subject which i'm pretty proud of :)

  • Lukeh10/04/2009 at 14:04

    so basically they were saying....

"DO LATIN! GO TO ANOTHER SCHOOL!!!"

did she only ever tell you do to latin? :P ttry and get you to go somewhere else :P

  • Alex Andronov10/04/2009 at 14:04

I’m hoping for an overthrow in the British government so alll this changes, no more forms.

    A formless government?

The only problem with this theory is that voting requires forms... Wait hold on! RG I think you have something!!! The formless government can just declare themselves the winners!

  • Lukeh10/04/2009 at 14:05

I don’t know if it actually is, but it’s just something our old schools uni advisor used to always bang on about (although oru school didnt even teach french let alone latin…;)

Hmmm... your uni admission process seems to be way more complicated than ours. Over here, we just pick which uni we want to go to, take their entrance exam, and hope for the best. If you pass their exam, you're in. We used to have a GCSE-like exam, but they trashed it in the 1980s for some reason I don't remember anymore.

  • Jon Waldock10/04/2009 at 14:05

It's a rule-based language. Get the rules (and their exceptions), and you should be able to at least grasp it somewhat.

  • Jon Waldock10/04/2009 at 14:06

We apply for 5, you either get offers for them or not, then you decide a firm and insurance choice and then take your alevels, and if you get the grades for your firm you go there, or if you dont but you get your insurance grades you go there. if you get neither you go through clearing....simple :)

  • Lukeh10/04/2009 at 14:06

Welsh is where it's at. Oh those lack of vowels are a beauty.

    :P

  • lou10/04/2009 at 14:07

haha no. i would have loved to have done italien but they don't offer it.. but tbh i had to give French up i just hated it so much.

Thats the same for me, but as you've said before, its all through UCAS who do a horrific job of organising it.

  • Jon Waldock10/04/2009 at 14:07

ooooh no, you also have to pay £20 to UCAS to put in applications, who then sit on their bum, twiddle their fingers, and occasionally send you an email false telling you something's been updated. They lost several people's personal statements in my school too and that messed up their unversity choices.

  • Journeyer10/04/2009 at 14:11

Ech... thank goodness our government deregulated it then and left it to the schools. :) Of course, the issue over here is the ridiculous tuition 2 of the Big 3 unis charge...

  • Journeyer10/04/2009 at 14:13

yep, but i was the person who raised the fact that they werent doing their job…

yeah, and you did the right thing. you're the best person to tell the higher-ups if the teachers are doing their job or not.

  • Jon Waldock10/04/2009 at 14:14

i think compared to most unis in the world we get it pretty good, its a max of £3,225 a year year, although some unis want to up it, but the government put a limit on it

ah every undergraduate gets a student loan that has no interest and you dont have to pay it back until your earning atleast £15,000 and even then you only have to pay back a fiver a week

I think this is where our cultures diverge. Over there, you're expected to pay your own tuition, right? Over here, that's the exception to the rule - parents usually pay the tuition here.

your not expected to pay it, like my parents payed for my brothers tution fees, but the student loans are their if needed, and everyone gets a base rate of about £3,200 for tution and £3,500 for living costs, then theirs a means tested (based on salary) grant that goes up to about £1000 for each student

Wales and Scotland gets it's tuition fees payed for by their assembly/parliament, although i'm not 100% sure if that is paid back after university. Which I should do really if I'm in Wales! :P

i see... must've been thinking of the US. ;)

over here, if you need financial assistance, the government is next to hopeless. i was the grandson of a WW2 veteran, and I was using up the remaining education grant my dad didn't use up in uni. I took them FOUR - yes, FOUR - years to grant it, by which time, I'd already graduated. My younger sis will use it instead. you're better off asking for help from the unis themselves.

I took them FOUR - yes, FOUR - years to grant it, by which time, I’d already graduated. My younger sis will use it instead. you’re better off asking for help from the unis themselves.

    ouch :/ that's very stupid.

  • Journeyer10/04/2009 at 14:26

yeah, id hate to be in US, you have to get either a massive scholorship or just lucky with your parents

or, most probably, get a job - a blue-collar one, at that. :O

it has its advantages, but it's still pretty tedious.

  • Journeyer10/04/2009 at 14:27

    ouch :/ that’s very stupid.

that's the government for you right there. it's a combination of bureaucratic red tape and a general lack of funds.

Nah, I don't think Lewis will leave. No one will let him leave - not McLaren, not Max and Bernie, not the fans. Besides, if he DOES leave, what will he do with himself? He's been racing all his life.

  • Journeyer10/04/2009 at 14:47

Yeah, manila envelopes, that came from us. It's because the material of those envelopes were originally only available here.

Yeah, manila envelopes, that came from us. It’s because the material of those envelopes were originally only available here.

That and the Masacre of course. Sadly I must admit to not knowing much more. Hold on... One of the few places controlled by America before they pretended to stop doing that kind of thing. Am I remembering that right?

  • Journeyer10/04/2009 at 14:50

Remember how I was coming up with, ‘Hamilton goes to NASCAR’ headlines yesterday (has it appeared on gmm yet ;)), maybe its the truth

The NASCAR boys will just eat Lewis alive. No way he'll survive that environment.

Speaking of NASCAR, our old buddy JPM is 13th and has been on an upward trend as of late. It's still a VERY long way to the Chase, but if he does make it in, it may just get rather interesting. :D

  • Rich10/04/2009 at 14:50

Bernie reckons McLaren could get a ban, especially considering they are “up in court” for the second time on a similar charge. James Allen also suggests that as the hearing is just before the British GP, it would make for some spectacular headlines. Oh dear

    .

In this invitation to comment I have pulled some thoughts from various sources

I think McLaren's hearing sets a new precedent and it is very difficult to know what or if any action the FIA will take against McLaren, but in brief they seem to have done the following...

McLaren tried to make out that Toyota and Jarno Trulli had broken the rules when they hadn’t. That is completely different. Here we have a situation where one team has deliberately set out to deceive the world by accusing a rival team of breaking the rules when they hadn’t.

    Source: http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2009/04/06/why-mclarens-actions-were-wrong/

This is not a case of breaking the rules in the heat of the moment's rash action. It is not even a liberal interpretation of some regulation of the car. On the face of it this seems to have been a more strategic action to disadvantage a competitor so it will need to be judged rather differently.

In attempting to downplay the situation many former F1 drivers have said that the drivers have to subscribe to the official team line with means that they regularly include omissions, providing misleading information and even untruths in statements they make to the press. How does the FIA deal with this "new" knowledge about its business. How do sponsors feel about Formula 1 if it knowing practices and condones such deceptions? How serious is it for one team to falsely accuse another team of irregularities that ensures it is penalised?

In its hearing I think the FIA needs to put most of its emphasis on Martin Whitmarsh's testimony. Martin has distanced himself fairly spectacularly from Dave Ryan accounts (two) to the race stewards. Here are some post-race comments reported by ITV.

"I think Lewis got out of the car and gave a truthful account of what had happened,"

"I believe that whilst they were at the stewards, Davey – who had been party to what had happened at Spa (where Hamilton was stripped of his win) – was highly sensitive and in the heat of the moment his judgement was to not give a true account.

"I think Lewis was then led by that."

    Source: http://www.itv-f1.com/news_article.aspx?id=45448

Martin skilfully introduces the information that Dave was responsible for the Spa incident. Despite this he was promoted to Sports Director earlier this year.

DoctorVee has brought the following about Whitmarsh statements to the public's attention...

“Martin Whitmarsh was not asked if there were any radio conversations. But he chose to omit this information regardless. The BBC’s viewers were left with the impression that Jarno Trulli had passed Lewis Hamilton of his own accord, not having been invited to do so. This version of events is very similar to the one we are led to understand was relayed to the stewards.

This would seem to suggest that very soon after the end of the race, a version of events — the official McLaren party line, as it were — was constructed. This is the version of events that Martin Whitmarsh gave to Ted Kravitz and the BBC’s viewers. “

His conclusion from all this is that the line presented by Davy Ryan in the stewards room was the team’s party line, not the act of a ‘rogue employee’, as it is now being presented."

    Source: http://www.jamesallenonf1.com/

Martin Whitmarsh in an interview with Ted Kravitz intermediately after the race said the following...

“…there’s some debate about whether it’s a 3rd place at the moment given that Trulli fell off and re-passed under the Safety Car…

…At the end, under the Safety Car, Trulli fell off onto the grass and Lewis had no choice but to go past him. He was not on the racing circuit. Trulli then re-took the place under the Safety Car, which ordinarily you wouldn’t do.

A lot of people have picked up on the use of the word ordinarily

    James Allen observes...

it shows that a degree of reflection is taking place, but also that there may be extenuating circumstances. It almost invites a sub clause in brackets, such as …(unless invited to do so…)

Martin Whitmarsh gets even more specific in another interview with Autosport where he said...

"Lewis didn't stop, and the telemetry data which was shown to the stewards today showed that the lap on which he was overtaken was no different from the succeeding lap that was under the safety car. It was difficult conditions but there was no evidence from the data that Lewis did anything that induced Trulli to go past."

"If we look at the speed traces at that time, and compare it to other periods behind the safety car, then Lewis did not do anything abnormal."

"I think it is also quite clear that Trulli should not have re-passed."

"As soon as that happened, we then spoke to Race Control, to explain that and ask if we could retake that place."

    Source: http://www.planetf1.com/story/0,18954,3213_5134263,00.html

An interesting aspect of the above is that McLaren had provided the stewards with their telemetry. Is it possible that Martin knew all of this but was still unaware of the radio communications between Hamilton and his team up to four days latter?

Martin Whitmarsh continues in the above interview with Autosport by saying...

"At the stewards' meeting, we mistakenly believed that the stewards were aware, Charlie [Whiting] was there, and the FIA was there, of that radio conversation."

Now Martin's tries to justify the omissions made by Dave and Lewis that the FIA knew the contents of the radio conversation, yet he, as the Team Principal for McLaren, does not know of their full contents either.

I might have got this horribly screwed up (both Gavin and Steven Roy tell me I know nothing) and the sources used may incorrectly have reported conversions. Nevertheless part of me still thinks it is uncannily close to the initial protestations that McLaren made during spy-gate along the lines of senior management did not know and it was a rogue employee acting on their own.

    Here are my questions...

    1) Can we give McLaren, and more specifically Martin Whitmarsh, the benefit of the doubt this time round?

    2) Was Dave Ryan really operating on his own and attempting to restore a lost point for Lewis Hamilton due to the team not knowing the rules? In other words he was fairly dismissed after 35 years of service?

    3) Is the FIA simply too incompetent in the running of races that this is ultimately all their fault?

It would be good to know who feels it is yes to all of the above questions.

oh and UCAS, dont forget about UCAS, the bain of everyone life

sounds simple… but is it as simple as it sounds?

Im going to have to play devil's advocate here, because I have to say I had a completly painless UCAS experience last year, and for me it was really as simple as it sounds. Though It was counterbalanced with the torrid time I had with my financial forms - my local authority just didnt have its act together.

Speaking of student finance, Id also like to add that I dont know exactly how the g'ment calculates the grants, but I get far more than I need and have been blowing a considerable amount on clothes. For example, Im currently sitting in a £150 pair of jeans! :P

last i heard on the trademark case was this story:

"Formula One bosses failed to secure exclusive rights to the sport's 'F1' abbreviation on Thursday after Britain's Trademark Registry ruled against them."

    link

in fairness, in today's q&a windsor does say "protected", rather than trademarked. i guess in this case protected means "not approved by bernie".

of note, the company who originally disputed the trademark case (racing-live sa) have now been bought by espn. no idea if that will increase their desire to fight bernie, or mean they're more likely roll over the minute he asks?

on the plus side, unique views have levelled off. i guess they can keep going as long as advertising income is greater than outgoing expenditure? unless they have to pay the staff anyway, in which case, it'll keep going until the end of 2009.

their problem now, is james allen copies his content onto his blog too. so i can read the same words over there with a cleaner layout and i can respond in the comments.

  • me10/04/2009 at 15:39

mike lawrence made a blind reference to that in an old Pitpass article, right?

possibly. i think i it was covered in the comments at some point too. so it was somewhere in the back of my mind. i wouldn't buy a postage stamp from ecclestone, let alone an f1 team!

  • Journeyer10/04/2009 at 15:42

but what if bernie was the only guy selling postage stamps? you wouldn't have a choice, would you?

  • me10/04/2009 at 15:42

annoyingly, i can't think of a single scenario that doesn't see me hand delivering my own mail :(

    you win.

  • Steven Roy10/04/2009 at 15:48

steven roy hasn’t told me that yet? how am i supposed to know my f1 history at a rate of five articles a quarter

To be fair you read two of them before on F1 pitlane last year so it was only three new articles. I have a quarter of my next article kind of written.

  • Journeyer10/04/2009 at 15:48

  • Jon Waldock10/04/2009 at 15:55

I watch it regularly, but not religiously. It has its charms, but nothing like F1.

It can be good, depends on the race, there's generally more overtaking but it really depends on the track.

It can also shoot itself in the foot like F1, oddly enough. Their first night race was a flop too. :)

  • Jon Waldock10/04/2009 at 15:57

It can also shoot itself in the foot like F1, oddly enough. Their first night race was a flop too. :)

i prefered their night race because it was on a proper circuit, some of the overhead shots were amazing.

  • Steven Roy10/04/2009 at 15:57

does it involve peter windsor? apparently i’m lacking knowledge in that area?

I have four srticles planned and I would be surprised if he appeared in any of them. I am going to have to become more prolific than my current pedestrian pace. The really annoying thing is the stuff I do write i write really quickly. There are just long gaps between the bouts of creativeness. I need to focus my energies. I feel a cunning plan forming.

  • Journeyer10/04/2009 at 15:58

i prefered their night race because it was on a proper circuit, some of the overhead shots were amazing.

but the track was rather... dull. it was also hard to make out the crowds, unlike SG. all you could clearly make out were the hoardings.

I spent a day there once a while ago. It was hot.

  • Journeyer10/04/2009 at 16:01

that being the second thing i love about it….characters

It's true to a certain extent, but I think it's a bit overhyped. I mean, what do we really know about Stoner or Hayden? Sure, we hear about them a lot, but what do we really know?

  • Journeyer10/04/2009 at 16:01

I spent a day there once a while ago. It was hot.

Not as hot as here or Sepang, I'm sure. ;)

  • Steven Roy10/04/2009 at 16:02

Rossi is MotoGP’s savior. Take him out, and what are you left with?

They had great racing before Rossi they will have great racing after Rossi. Doohan was great, Schwantz was insane, Rainey was great, Gardner and then before that you had Roberts and Sheene.

  • Dan Brunell10/04/2009 at 16:02

that being the second thing i love about it….characters

Third they put out great fan videos and podcasts.

Fourth they actually have video game out

Fifth they have two races in the states

Sixth they have a good website

Seventh they are not afraid to have fans make tribute videos

Eighth... I could go on and on and on...

  • Jon Waldock10/04/2009 at 16:03

It’s true to a certain extent, but I think it’s a bit overhyped. I mean, what do we really know about Stoner or Hayden? Sure, we hear about them a lot, but what do we really know?

thats probably more to do with the fact that we're car fans, i know the whole British motorsport scene for single seaters, saloon cars and most of GT cars....what do i know about bike racing? Superbikes, Supersport and MotoGP, and WSB too, couldnt tell you anything about the bikes though.

  • Journeyer10/04/2009 at 16:03

They had great racing before Rossi they will have great racing after Rossi. Doohan was great, Schwantz was insane, Rainey was great, Gardner and then before that you had Roberts and Sheene.

In a racing aspect, that's true. But in a commercial aspect, not sure if they'll ever be able to match Rossi. The reason MotoGP began to build a global image (i.e. outside Europe and Australia) was Rossi.

  • Joe10/04/2009 at 16:04

I don't go on many F1 news sites at all. I look at ITV F1 daily, and sometimes Autosport and Pitpass. ITV F1 does have The Gravel Trap though. :P

  • Steven Roy10/04/2009 at 16:05

It’s true to a certain extent, but I think it’s a bit overhyped. I mean, what do we really know about Stoner or Hayden? Sure, we hear about them a lot, but what do we really know?

They will pick up the reigns eventually. We had all those years where it was only Rossi and Gibernau until Gibernau decided to wind up Rossi and Rossi destroyed him. It is never a good idea to annoy someone with that amount of ability. Giving him extra motivation to beat you is a bad plan.

I remember an interview with Billy Bremner who was the Scotland captain in the 1982 World cup in Spain. Scotland took the lead against Brazil and in the interview Bremner said 'All the others were celebrating like they had won the tournament but I knew we had just annoyed them.' Final result was 4-1.

  • Steven Roy10/04/2009 at 16:06

Agreed. I wonder when Rossi will step aside, though, and if he'll be able to do so as champion...

this came up the other day, and despite everyone agreeing the bbc f1 website was a sea of unnavigable content... we failed to find a ted notebook.

  • me10/04/2009 at 16:12

we have ted news during a GP weekend don’t we?

yeah. but TED!news came from his post race notebooks. that's what started it. during a race he's just giving us pitlane info we're not aware of yet.

notebook's were post race news, covering important things we'd missed during the weekend.

  • Joe10/04/2009 at 16:14

Yes we have Ted during a GP weekend, but we want him all the time like we used to get! Damnit BBC.

    yeah, thanks for that.

    oh, how we guffawed.

  • Lukeh10/04/2009 at 16:53

  • me10/04/2009 at 16:57

    but…. why?

    a) because no-one else was. and live commenting was telling us anything important that the commentary team said.

    b) because legard was more annoying.

    c) i really thought it might be something special. a great opportunity to bring f1 to a younger generation.

    d) i was there watching teletubbies way before they got famous, and i thought it might become something equally as popular.

is it good enough to run either doohickey or lclt? failing that, you might be able to refresh the comment feed.

if all else fails, we may be able to put up a simple text page for you to refresh during the sessions.

  • RG10/04/2009 at 17:03

nope doesn't run the doohicky or lclt sadly, i usually just refresh the comment feed but it takes forever to scroll to the bottom. Simple text is the best because I don't have a data plan and it ends up being very expensive feeding my sidepodcast/twitter addiction throughout the day

Cold and wet so far but very relaxing. Opened a couple of locks, caught up with the archers and even driven the boat!!

erm... i got melted easter egg on my jumper and spent the afternoon commenting.

    i fixed the hoover though.

I'd rather have a bucket load of rain than being in the sun, cools you down and like you say, is more relaxing

  • Lukeh10/04/2009 at 17:52

The rain rocks, I love having rain tapping on the window... find it so relaxing :)

Although it makes me laugh when out in it in newport city centre and everyone will run for shelter if it rains but I'll happily march through it

The photos I took at Albert Park today

A look-see at what Albert Park looks like 2 weeks after the race. Sadly I didn't get any in the pit lane because security are still patrolling it and they wouldn't let me in.

I was sad because it's my favourite part of the circuit. It's the only part that doesn't get used the rest of the year, so the rubber from the F1 cars doesn't get disturbed.

  • Lukeh10/04/2009 at 18:27

On the end of The One Show then on BBC1 im sure Adrian Chiles said thry have Jackie Stewart on next week... will have to confirm that I think later.

‘What if Max Mosley ran football….’

THe onld saying is if the FIA ran football we would have round pitches and square balls. Christine used that a while ago on an intro.

i know you recently said you’re not confident with writing. but i’m sure the story behind those pics would make for one heck of a guest post.

the ones i took of the circuit being constructed are far more exciting because it meant racing was on its way, not that racing had recently finished. I'll see if I can throw something together

that would be appreciated. i like the ones you just took, because we always see plenty of atmospheric build-up shots. we rarely, if ever, see what formula 1 leaves behind.

Just watching QoS. They’re question to Brundle couldn’t have been any easier could it? “Which circuit did Sebastian Vettel win at in 2008?”

They could have asked, 'Where did Heikki Kovalainen finish in the race which Vettel won?' or something like that

@Amy - have you been up all night? How’s the Melbourne weather? It’s supposed to rain in Sydney today - it is the Easter long weekend after all!

I have been up all night! We had a dinner party that went until 3am, and it's thrown me right off. I want to go to sleep but I want to finish uploading 2 years worth of photos to flickr since I finally bothered to pay for a pro account. Weather has been good, thankfully. I have a busy weekend, I don't need rain!

I have devised my own Super Season Grid on my blog and I thought I'd share it with you. I've taken the fastest lap times from every driver across the entire race weekends and found an average lap time from them. So here is the Super Season grid after Malaysia.

    Button - 1'29.320 +0.000

    Barrichello - 1'29.585 +0.266

    Trulli - 1'29.628 +0.308

    Vettel - 1'29.699 +0.379

    Webber - 1'29.732 +0.412

    Glock - 1'29.770 +0.450

    Rosberg - 1'29.790 +0.470

    Kubica - 1'29.857 +0.537

    Raikkonen - 1'29.918 +0.599

    Heidfeld - 1'30.137 +0.817

    Alonso - 1'30.156 +0.836

    Nakajima - 1'30.198 +0.878

    Kovalainen - 1'30.375 +1.055

    Massa - 1'30.481 +1.161

    Hamilton - 1'30.680 +1.360

  • Jackie10/04/2009 at 23:09

He did Free Practice and Qualifying, didn’t he?

Yes he did, I'm just not sure that it's valid to include him since we are not compairing like with like, we don't for example know how heavily fuelled etc he was or whether he faced any traffic on those laps.

  • me10/04/2009 at 23:15

it's a difficult one. q2 times might be representative, but then massa didn't go out for another run.

  • Alianora La Canta11/04/2009 at 14:09

    What are you writing about if I mght ask? {Comment #386}

I'm writing a stage play about aliens coming to Earth and a group of people at an unnamed Space Agency attempting to convince the aliens that they are capable of rational thought and therefore shouldn't have their planet invaded.

Some of the characters became a bit implausible, but I suppose that's what happens when you try stuffing some dares into the script...

  • Alianora La Canta11/04/2009 at 14:12

    Hey all hows everyone’s day going so far? {Comment #394}

  • Alianora La Canta11/04/2009 at 14:15

    wait, you mean im going to have to fill in the same finance forms again for hte next 3 years?! it took me ages!!!! {Commnet #411}

If you're lucky, it'll be only for 3 years. If you're unlucky like I was, you'll then spend two years after that persuading them not to take money off you to which they are not entitled (and I'm still waiting for a sizeable amount of money they owe me).

  • Alianora La Canta11/04/2009 at 14:24

    oh.. UCAS.. i’ve heard lots about it… i’m looking forward to that {Commnet #421}

I think it helps if your school/college provides support. It means they end up messing about with the website and you just end up writing what gets submitted (at least that's what happened to me).

The only problem I had was with one university who wrote back and said they'd stopped doing the course I'd applied for, but even the best university application system doesn't help there.

  • Alianora La Canta11/04/2009 at 14:39

Hmmm… your uni admission process seems to be way more complicated than ours. Over here, we just pick which uni we want to go to, take their entrance exam, and hope for the best. If you pass their exam, you’re in. We used to have a GCSE-like exam, but they trashed it in the 1980s for some reason I don’t remember anymore.

The way it works here is, basically:

    1) Decide which universities you are willing to consider.

    2) Narrow it down to six or fewer (I ended up applying to four because only four unis near me did the course I wanted to do)

    3) Fill in UCAS form (basically a long application form)

    4) Wait for offers from universities

    5) Attend any interviews or open days advised or instructed by the universities.

    6) If doing a medical or related subject, take the BMAT test to assess your potential in that area. Otherwise, there may be a test set by the university or subject over and above the qualifications you are pursuing, but most likely not.

    7) Wait for replies from universities and hope they don't all reject you.

    8) If there's an unconditional offer and you accept it, stop reading and start looking forward to university. Otherwise, decide what your "firm" and "insurance" offers will be. The conditions of the offers are vitally important - the "insurance" option cannot require better qualifications (translated into UCAS points) than the "firm" option and you don't want to make the "insurance" option a university whose conditions are too high in case you miss. At this point, you can only have two offers open and must formally decline any others.

    9) Do any examinations that are conditions for the universities you still have valid offers from. While waiting, you would be well advised to start arranging funding of some sort. Government funding can take up to nine months to come through, as I found out the hard way.

    10) Get your results.

    11) If you got the results for the "firm" university, stop reading and get ready to study there. Otherwise, decide whether it's worth phoning the university quickly to ask if they'll have you anyway (unpopular courses routinely allow people who've just missed the requirements to start studying there anyway).

    12) If the university says no or you decide it's not worth phoning them, check your results against the "insurance" university. If your results are better than those the "insurance" university asked for, stop reading and get ready to start studying there. Otherwise, decide whether you'll phone the "insurance" university up or enter "clearing".

    13) If you enter "clearing", you can pick any course at any university that still has spaces, but the university can reject you without giving a reason. Also, it's all done on phone calls, so places disappear very, very quickly. If you get in this way, housing arrangements and so on can get extremely complicated for the first few weeks...

  • Journeyer11/04/2009 at 14:41

The way it works here is, basically:

Yow, rather complicated, to be honest. And nerve-wracking, too, especially if you don't fare so well during the exams.

  • Alianora La Canta11/04/2009 at 14:46

    not so - f1 is trademarked by bernie. read the bit that comes at the end of every season DVD. {Comment #510}

The DVD says one thing, the European Trademarks office says something completely different...

"F1 Racing" is trademarked, as is "Formula One World Championship", but in the EU at least, "F1" is not.

It's possible that Peter could have run against a US trademark issue, though, which would be a show-stopper for him seeing as his team is going to be based there.

That is very true. Fortunately my head of year decided to phone my "firm" option university on my behalf because he thought I might not be in the best of states to do that call (don't ask me how, but he knew my results before I got to his office to discuss the matter). Some of my classmates at university made it through clearing and they said it was a nightmare.

  • Journeyer11/04/2009 at 14:51

You mean F1? Who knows? Peter did say it's not their final name yet. They'll announce it once the entry list is released by the FIA.

The problem was with the F1 bit rather than the US part. As for why GPE specifically, Peter's always had a lot of respect for Williams (which was the first team to use the GPE suffix) and he also worked there as a team manager during the 1980s. Maybe this was his way of honouring that connection.

Yes - my head of year duly persuaded the "firm" choice to let me in, so I didn't have to bother making arrangements my "insurance" option at all. As it happened, my grades were good enough to get me in there automatically, so I was never really in danger of landing in "clearing", but I would have felt a bit silly if I had. You see, I'd rejected an unconditional offer from a third university earlier in the year (this being due to my AS results being only 10 points off their standard after-A2 offer...)

There is... I believe another problem in states that a number can't be trademarked. Not even if it's part of a name. I'm not certain about there was definitely something to do with this which was the reason Intel changed the name of their chips from 286, 386, 486 to Pentium.

Of course another possibility is that somebody else (perhaps Tony George) owns USF1 as a trademark and so "Team USF1" is different enough to be trademarkable.

Tony George only owns USGP, not USF1.

wouldn't it just be easier if he calls it windsorgp?

  • Journeyer11/04/2009 at 15:29

but he's not the team principal - ken anderson is.

  • Journeyer11/04/2009 at 15:29

but he’s not the team principal - ken anderson is.

and this is banking on US support, therefore the 'patriotic' name.

  • me11/04/2009 at 15:30

    windsorandersongp?

How do you know? I mean lots of firms buy lots of trademarks ahead of time.

  • Journeyer11/04/2009 at 15:33

How do you know? I mean lots of firms buy lots of trademarks ahead of time.

Bernie wouldn't have let him buy it, I'd think. And Peter would've probably looked it up if someone already owned the USF1 name.

  • Bassano Clapper11/04/2009 at 15:33

Giggles, did you leave the drop.io/meandpage22 delete option open to everyone on purpose?

  • me11/04/2009 at 15:37

bernie couldn't stop him. bernie doesn't own any rights to the term f1.

the only thing bernie can do, is 'protect' the term, by not letting anyone play with his ball if they use that term.

  • Alex Andronov11/04/2009 at 15:37

    No... Whoops... Fixed now :)

    Thought not

which is perhaps what bernie did? stop may have been the wrong term, but he could've stopped tony george by threatening him to pull the usgp in the past?

What the heck is the point of following 932 people onTwitter?

    Anyone?

How would you get anything done?

  • Alex Andronov11/04/2009 at 15:39

Still curious to know who this is:

  • Bassano Clapper11/04/2009 at 15:40

    who’s doing that then?

Some called 'Art Sleuth' who has requested to follow my twitterings

Was trying to find out where the association is, if any

  • Journeyer11/04/2009 at 15:41

Perhaps you should ask that the users name is included in the pic title

Maybe it's Gavin? He's not here to claim the pic, after all.

They do indeed, very sharp with extremely close tolerances and high quality materials

[my sis used to be a hairdresser, I have no need for scissors like those when I have a Mach3]

  • Alex Andronov11/04/2009 at 15:47

I don't have any more information than you. I was simply thinking it was odd that somebody was brave enough to put their picture on there but not comment about it. But if it's somebody connected with the mysterious secret world of Mr C then that makes some kind of sense.

Maybe they are the anti-Me? Can have photos but won't comment?

  • me11/04/2009 at 15:48

    that's exactly what i was told :)

i had to listen to the differences between cheap and expensive pairs. it's quite a complicated business.

  • Jackie11/04/2009 at 15:59

I bought some of that anti-glare screen protector for my phone and its full of bubbles underneath it even though I followed the instructions to the letter .. grrr

  • Bassano Clapper11/04/2009 at 15:59

How often do you get an email saying:

Gov Schwarzenegger has requested to follow you on Twitter!

    I should keep that one

  • Bassano Clapper11/04/2009 at 16:00

Use a credit card to push the bubbles out to the edges

  • Vinnie11/04/2009 at 16:01

Gov Schwarzenegger has requested to follow you on Twitter!

Ask him if he makes a cameo in Terminator Salvation!

  • Jackie11/04/2009 at 16:01

I'll give it a try .. but its the edges that are the problem, .. ditched the first one for the same reason and if I dont get this one to stick properly I'll do without

Or, try something a bit harder but not too sharp. like the edge of a ruler

  • Jackie11/04/2009 at 16:03

Use a credit card to push the bubbles out to the edges

I think I have OCD .. the bubbles are getting to me

  • Jackie11/04/2009 at 16:05

I think I have it sorted, put back in its case and hey presto I have an inch long mega bubble up the side

For those regarding my super season grid, the averages are worked out from a driver's fastest lap time over the entire weekend, so that is counting their fastest lap from practice should they have had troubles in qualifying. Sure, it's not a perfect comparison against some drivers, but it's the only way to be fair.
