Oh boy! Colin Firth ... what should I say? He made me speechless! If you haven't seen it yet, rush to the cinema! Hush, hush! But wait, not that fast .... read this daily before, will you? Thank you. :-)
I shall keep it short, 'cause this day has been one, huge, endless haste. My bed is so alluring tonight ... OK. Last minutes of concentration for today ...
Formula1: No big news really, but thank God there's twitter. And Christine having an eye on it. :-)
Football: Football talks are banned in my house till the next week, since we lost on Sunday, and one of our best players will be out for a month. So, ziiiiiiiiiiiiippppp!
Ski jumping: This guy is the new World Champion individual on the small hill, and in team. He, and the Austrian team, deserved it like no other! And ... Eddie Edwards The Second?
Tennis: Djoker won the Dubai Championships against FedEx, and David Ferrer won The Mexican Open. And del Potro won something too, again. Eventually! About time.
Have you seen this? No? Now you have got and you must read it/watch it now. :-)
Cricket: Big action in Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka: The Cricket World Cup. Yes, I know, old news, but last Sunday I finally decided to accomplish one of my resolutions, and give cricket a chance. I've been told my timing couldn't have been better. I can't tell really, cause I missed the best part (even the best work sometimes ruins quite a lot), and I just know too little about this game to judge ... I'm willing to learn, the books are underway, the schedule is sorted; there's just this work thing ...
Oh and there's this too. Still some spare time? Take a look at this new, shiny, fresh as it can be, just launched sports magazine. And follow!
All right then. I shall hop into my bed and leave you, lovely readers, with something to listen here and here. Enjoy, leave a comment, have a fantastic day and go to the cinema!
I am off ... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz .....
Like the stylish top-left-hand pop-up saying that the new post exists :)
Ahh, Mr C will be happy it's working for everyone now :)
I either never noticed it or was on another tab at the time.
You'll have to post something else :-P
You would notice it because it doesn't disappear, but if you are using realtime, you are on the one page that it won't appear on :)
ah...
don't tell Mr C :-)
Hehehe, #confidential.
Good to see someone learning about cricket, Amanda. :) Shame it is on so early, and the TV highlights are on here late (such that I keep forgetting about them.. I must check iPlayer after work).
Six Nations is fun too.
I agree on The King's Speech, it is very, very good.
"Football talks are banned in my house till the next week"
no spanish football wednesday?
lovely daily amanda, but i'm not going to the cinema even to see the senna film, so i'm not going for colin either :)
will be on itunes soon enough, i'm sure.
i didn't notice in all the 'excitement' at midnight, but joe seems to have combined benson's "as predicted by" and autosport's "as exclusively revealed by" calling cards into one massively awful "as exclusively predicted on this blog".
is it possible to exclusively predict something? that opening sentence is just about the worst of all worlds :(
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2011/02/28/infiniti-confirms/
I read it as a joke kind of line. Is it serious? oy.
ahh, is it? hope so, i just read straight.
I have no idea. There are lots of folks much more qualified than me to figure that one out.
Sleep for me. Good night.
seriously disappointed with that ... the worshipped god of F1 journalism predicted the same thing as the frowned upon Mr Benson. Then when the real story comes out he does not correct himself but instead starts with the line "as exclusively predicted on this blog " ...
well he was not exclusive in fabricating that story ...
not going to waste my commenting on that blog as I have no desire for being abused for daring to have different opinion ...
I have just read I Am Legend in about 4 hours. I must get on with the day.
I know this isn't much of a conversation but I wanted to record the achievement somewhere (and boast a little bit :P )
"no spanish football wednesday?"
except the spanish league on wednesday, of course, Mr C. I should have said Premier League football talks are banned. Nice to hear someone cares about the wednesdays so much. :D
"is it possible to exclusively predict something? that opening sentence is just about the worst of all worlds :("
"I read it as a joke kind of line. Is it serious? oy."
I also think it's a joke ...
"Good to see someone learning about cricket, Amanda. :) Shame it is on so early, and the TV highlights are on here late (such that I keep forgetting about them.. I must check iPlayer after work)."
yeah. I have to look for streams and there are no news in the german media at all. Though it's rather hilarious to watch a sport, read the reports and don't understand a single word/term they are saying. hahahaha learning genuinely from the basics. It's like a foreign language. :-9
"lovely daily amanda, but i'm not going to the cinema even to see the senna film, so i'm not going for colin either :)"
Naughty, naughty!
and in a really late reply to what you were talking about yesterday about Lou visiting circuits and walking the track, no, that's not what I did in Barcelona, I only went to the "open access area", I couldn't get near the actual track itself.
Morning
Ah sorry Amy, I somehow thought you'd been on the track too!
It has to be a joke, surely?
Wow dude, you're really going after the F1 journos today ... Hope their fans don't react like Steve Slater's did ;)
ooooooh Singapore tickets go on sale on Thursday. That's not an awful lot of warning.
I wonder if I should hold off on buying on the off chance I'll be able to talk someone else into coming :D
would've been nice! Although the desertedness of the place was super creepy
I think I've worked out where I want to sit this time around, 3rd time visiting, 3rd different stand.
Stupid zone based system *grumble*
Don't make the mistake I made with Melbourne, and wait too long.
I am remembering how super mad I was about not having access to zone 1 so I couldn't get to the paddock entrance until Sunday after the race, so I think I'll go for the Republic Stand. It's $988 SGD so it just sneaks in under the four figures that the Pit/Turn 1/Turn 2 stands cost. Plus it didn't exist in 2008 when I first did all my research.
Still a ridiculous price though because thats about $760 AUD which is quite considerably more than the $100 that Malaysia tickets cost :D
After this years Singapore Air/Pan Pacific/Zone 1 ticket spree next year might have to go back to the Jetstar/Ibis Hotel/Zone 4 ticket combo I think. #bankrupt
Whoa! thats a lot. I don't think I will be going.
Someone needs to tell them that as much as they think they're the Monaco of the night, they really aren't. Although it still sells out so I guess it's never going to get cheaper. Boo.
It sells out? How is someone like me meant to get tickets - i can never make my mind up until a few weeks before.
they keep a few tickets available at the gate for people like you who I just don't understand :D
:-)
well, I kept my mouth shut as I know how revered and untouchable Mr Saward is here, but his arrogance towards people who disagree with him and "I am always right" attitude are really getting annoying ...
great ! my only GP of the year, get the good seats, get the good seats :-)
although the hotels/flights might be a problem, they tend to sell out too ;)
I would have to agree with that. He either needs to stop comments on his blog, or allow discussion. I am always polite, but he absolutely shot me to pieces a couple of times.
don't steal my good seat!
(who am I kidding, I'll probably buy them on Thursday. It's pay day! They won't even have to go on the credit card!)
just checked up on flights and hotels on Sunday, what I want is available, at the moment. big spending Thursday it seems ...
I have heard this point of view from more people in more places than you'd think :)
Obviously thinking about this for 3 months is not the way to go.
Do it. Do it now!
Think about it? Ok. I'll do it ;-)
this year they have group purchase specials if you buy 4 tickets or more :D
I am pleased my flight is already paid for and my hotel is already locked in at the rate before they went 'ooh F1 weekend, lets triple our prices' :D
convince one more person, convince one more person ... or not, savings on ticket would be more negated by the need to book 2 hotel rooms at F1 rates
I dont even have a valid passport at the moment :-(
I have spare room in my hotel, I am but one wee person with a SUPER GIANT BED.
Rasa Sentosa Resort is part of the annual Sing GP routine, that location is non negotiable :-)
heheh fair enough, I would die happy if I never went back to Sentosa. I did not like it :(
I would like to check out the Marina Bay Sands one year but I think 2010 was the only year it'd actually be affordable, their rates have gone up a lot since then.
I do not really care about Sentosa itself, but the whole set up with pool and beach for the whole day and then F1 in the evening is just unbeatable :-)
that does sound lovely, last year I was still on Monza time so I slept all day. This year I hope to spend all day at the pool at my hotel :D
Isn't there shopping to be had?
I don't think I'll have any spare spending money for the actual trip :D
:-)
budget cuts have to be made somewhere, I have the Olympics to pay for after that. Gosh I need to win lotto.
#Sidepodspace
A view of the rocket launch from an aeroplane: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GE_USPTmYXM
That's my tactic. I think i have had my chance when I got 5 numbers :-(
I only buy lotto tickets about twice a year so I think my chances are slim :)
Me too. I was *this* close to 15 million.
damn you 6th number!
Buy bonus bonds instead - at least you save some money!
That's what I said :-)
Morning all, happy St Davids Day :)
morniiiiiing
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2011/02/28/infiniti-confirms/#comment-42081
this is probably the first time I see someone being unhappy that someone else is being credited for breaking the story with lots of holes in it ...
thats a little bit 'me me meeee' even for Joe
I think I've sprung a leak ;)
at least one thing is clear, that "exclusively predicted" opening sentence was not meant as a joke ...
yesterday was a sad day for F1 journalism and it continues today with one journo pointing finger at the other for steeling story, another pointing fingers at many others for running bad story ... I thought these people were adults, not little kids ...
please bring on the racing before the whole F1 media goes mad ...
Dunno what to think really. I get the impression Joe is tired of the comments but last time I did it was refuted by him on an Aside... But I am not sure what his beef is here when this story has been swilling around for weeks?
Exactly the point I was trying to make yesterday
Pre-Season Frustrations you reckon?
Wellington has just had a small earthquake, my brother says everyone is seriously over reacting.
ooh I just got an email from the Singapore GP Corp with their prices under the big headline
"We Wanted You To Hear It Before Anyone Else"
fail.
I wonder if these are the sort of conversations they have in the press room but because they haven't been in the press room for a long time they are being aired out in the open?
Openness is a two way street... I much prefer to know these things than have them all hidden away. We can't say, "lets have more openness in F1" and then go, "urgh it's all a bit mucky and grubby".
Or rather we can but then I guess you have to unsubscribe from these people's twitter feeds.
hard to say, but obviously those guys are not exactly friendly towards each other ... piranha club obviously extends beyond the team garages
This isn't about openness, it's about the sheer lack of professionalism from some involved
Yes it is about openness... It's openness that lets you find out that they are unprofessional (in your opinion)
Well, yeah it is my opinion that it was unprofessional. I would find that behaviour wholly unacceptable from a colleague and would not be so crass to call someone out in public.
Surely it's more about the "report now" attitude? N one can afford to wait and fact check these days. Someone says something on twitter and it is immediately spread everywhere
Hehehehehe
:)
I don't know, what is point to know something that is not true now rather getting the true story a day later ?
Ah, but that is the problem these days. If you report late, you don't get the clicks of people reading. It's not just an F1 problem. Even the BBC are getting caught in this trap.
They have a lot of small earthquakes!
I'm not sure about that though - there is a lot of good banter and collaboration with each other...
probably same as everywhere, some are fine with some and not exactly friendly with some others
Birthday PING
http://toata.wordpress.com/2011/03/01/162-happy-birthday-toata/
exactly, he can't work out why they had to interrupt television for the 'breaking news' and now TV3 is evacuating their Wellington building as a precaution. I get that Chch was awful but they can't do this every time there is a very minor brief shake.
Somtiems I really love Bernie and his ideas. I swear he listened to Sidepodradio or something :D
Q: Making rain?
BE: Yes. There are race tracks that you can make artificially wet and it would be easy to have such systems at a number of tracks. Why not let it ‘rain’ in the middle of a race? For 20 minutes or the last ten laps? Maybe with a two-minute warning ahead of it. Suspense would be guaranteed and it would be the same for all.
:D http://www.formula1.com/news/interviews/2011/3/11783.html
I do like Bernie for a laugh. No doubt idiots somewhere will take this seriously
as much as i hate to admit it, i read it the same way. not a good start to the year :(
I am tempted to read that Bernie book that everyones talking about just because it's on Kindle. I like things that come on Kindle. I have downloaded the sample of it so far but I have not read it.
oh good. it needs more smileys then.
keep reading :P
hehe!
Amy I believe there may be a free demo available of top Spin 4 on the PSN some time in the next few hours if you fancy trying a new tennis game :)
ooooh I shall have a looky. Our PS store tends to be rubbish compared to yours :(
oh dear :(
agreed. yesterday was benson's worst day, but at least he fessed up, even if he should probably be fired for it. i can't fathom why joe hasn't corrected the original story, or even noted the fundamental error in it?
Hopefully it'll be in australia too, I got told it was worldwide demo on both the xbox and playstation so hopefully!
agreed and seconded.
Aye - saw that today. Odd.
I've always been a Virtua Tennis girl but I'm willing to cheat on it when the alternative is free.
:)
oh f***.
Anyone for PitPass
;)
i caught up with the comments. i made need to go cry in a corner though. is joe working for GMM now?
... instead he takes it on the commenters who dared to point that out to him ...
aren't they unprofessional in someway?
:)
isn't everyone today?
;)
Morning
Morning Mav
apparently.
Ah, but we're meant to be unprofessional ;)
I found that odd, especially as Joe chose to subtly mock Benson's "as predicted" line in the updated post. If he'd credited the BBC in the original post it would have made some sense...
I like to think I'm a professional unprofessional.
In that case, let's be better than everyone else!!
Nobody is paying me :-)
would he credit them if he thinks they "stole" it from him?
Still, we have a "licence" to do the stuff that's fun but forbidden to professionals...
i have replied, don't know if it'll be published:
i'm sorry, but no i don't think so. andrew maitland built a business on that argument for the past half a decade and you have lambasted him for that on many occasions. as have i.
Really? I heard Viva F1 was being backed by Infiniti - saw it on a website somewhere
i will never be professional in your opinion, so i won't bother trying.
hehe
When did I ever say that?
I like his last comment about a woman running F1 in 3 to 5 years more - it sounds like he knows who will be taking over from him
(if her surname is Ecclestone, I may just cry)
I don't feel any better-informed from having read Joe's original post on the subject than I would have been if I hadn't read it. The mistake was simply too big.
We're still waiting for Group Lotus to buy us off
and there goes the "Aside" ...
I'll wait for confirmation from Dany then
It surely won't be Petra because she's made a career for herself in fashion design - not an arena whose typical management resembles that of Bernie's constellation of companies. Maybe Tamara, but if I had to bet I'd guess CVC has a female executive who might get the call. No idea who that might be though.
I still don't understand how it was only ever described as having holes in the story... there was a huge great glaring mistake which was the entire central theme of the story as it was originally run. taking that into account it was only about 5 percent accurate.
ha. i would happily discuss this with joe. i don't think he's wrong.
am really annoyed that benson came out of the whole thing the better of the two :)
There are still occasional rumours flying around that it could be Zak Brown
wait. i DO. not don't.
The bit about Infiniti giving money to Red Bull was true. I suppose there was some substance to the story... ...about as much substance as there would be for me running for FIA president in 2014!
that was a typo and a half. not a 100% accurate comment, you might say.
Would make for a very interesting discussion on Aside though
That's a reasonable suggestion given the evidence we've had, unless the team owners took an instant dislike to him.
It's okay... you'll be able to guess from the new black and gold scheme, 'We love the real lotus' banner and 'isn't it time that Fernandes left F1?' articles
Ah, but you corrected yourself before anyone could duplicate the error...
does that mean ITV F1 is backed by Hispania then?
heh.
but team's get sponsor deals all the time and we'd probably take less notice of it than Lada's - rebadging the engine was in a different league
This stuff happens all the time in the IT world. Arre we surprised it happens in F1 reporting? People demand news all the time, regardless of how well it is checked.
I exclusively predicted that you had made a mistake ;)
I was tempted until I read a quote apparently from it about the Alonso/McLaren Hungary 2007 incident (allegedly Fernando asked Ron to make Lewis' car run out of fuel and thereby cause a DNF, which strikes me as so implausible that the suggestion would have no place in any book, let alone one supposedly about Bernie).
wait... again. i was right the first time wasn't i? do i, or don't i?
hehe. i think i was right the first time.
There have been so many redactions now that I've lost track ;-)
Morning all.
Heh. You know who starts those rumours? Zak Brown.
His business partner, John Hogan (ex Marlboro, and the fellow who brokered the McLaren-project 4 merger back in the day) was one of T Rubython's better sources, hence the regular puff pieces about Zak's genius in Rubython mags.
True dat.
having had caffeine i may be safe to comment. in summary.
benson is either useless for stealing an unverified rumor from the web and claiming it has his own. or he's useless for having half a story on his own and printing it without double checking his facts. either way, someone at the beeb should look at his output.
on the plus side, benson at least admitted his mistake and to some degree tried to fix it.
joe, appears to have run with a dubious story and printed it as fact, he's not fussed that it contained less truth than your average GMM article, he's not taking it back. plus wants credit for the BBC's misinformed article too!
unless i've missed something, that's blinking awful. however, would be happy to discuss it on a podcast, or in joe's comments. i don't see the difference between what joe did and what maitland does. anyone else?
...i think, that is what i think. at least right now :)
it's a new way of winning internet arguments :)
I was wrong that time I was wrong about being wrong and I'm wrong about it.
Makes sense
;)
i think I agree with what you think you think
i also think i can forgive benson's "predictions" if he's also honest about admitting the ones he got horribly wrong. maybe that's the thing though, bbc f1 is keen to pedal predictions rather than news so why expect 100% accuracy? it's more honest than what maitland does
because it's the bbc not fox news.
I think the article from Joe's Business of Motorsport is the kind of wording that I would expect:
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2011/02/28/infiniti-confirms/#comment-42081
It clearly says, "rumours" in there and so then I expect it to be a rumour. The problem is the post on his blog makes it sound like it was a fact.
seconded.
Two arguments being conflated here...
1) If you say something is a prediction should the reader expect it be 100% accurate - no.
2) Should the BBC do predictions - no they aren't Fox news
A prediction is making a guess... And guessing right and accurately is a good talent I suppose and something people might want to read. But you can't really exclusively guess something.
News websites usually exclusively reveal things, as in the unveiling of a secret.
Exactly. So should they have blogs then? Maybe not.
that's what we'd like to expect
but the sport website in particular is not claiming that - just the opposite in fact
Joes blog has quite a bit of guessing in there. It's not always quite so obvious that he may be wrong.
Guess might be a bit strong a word, maybe I should say opinion and
conjecture.
Isn't that the difference between a blog and publishing an article?
there is a difference between a writing blog and putting out a story on the bbc, yes. and benson should be judged more harshly because of that. at least in my mind.
joe's original post wasn't an opinion piece or comment (as i read it, i just read it as a statement of fact). no-one is going to be right all the time, but admitting when you have something wrong does seem kind of key.
There is a bit of bad language in this article here by John Gruber. John writes about technology and the arts but also writes a lot about Apple. He often makes predictions about what is going to be coming up in new Apple releases. But he always makes clear the difference between his guesses and information from his sources. In this article he talks about a mistake in a prediction by Engadget:
http://daringfireball.net/2011/02/eleventh_hour
Here, for example, is a random article from the past where Gruber points out that the story he's reporting might not be true but sounds right, and he also includes several updates after the fact with extra information:
http://daringfireball.net/linked/2010/01/31/jobs-town-all
Oooooh yay. Codies are going to start talking about F1 2011 from the Melbourne weekend!
http://www.vg247.com/2011/03/01/f1-2011-info-to-drop-prior-to-melbourne-season-opener/
I don't think that's a problem although I think it's fair to say expectations are higher
there's the admission element though. in the space of 24 hours it went from "As reported back before Christmas, it looks like Red Bull Racing is not going to be running Renault engines in 2011" to "As exclusively predicted on this blog, Infiniti... has agreed a marketing deal". So which was reported/predicted?
For example you can really see here the difference in this one phrase:
much enjoyed arguing with myself this morning, and commenting with everyone else. now i must be off to work before i (literally) get painted into a corner.
Good day sir!!
:)
Cheers
But it will be cooler right? Waaaay cooler.
Oh, you were making a point about blogging..........
I also disagree with Joe's latest post
"top quality musical event" my thumb.
Linkin Park.... Gah!! Parting like it's 2002 all over again, but....... their last album did quite well globally
hehehe
I was shocked to learn of this, I'm positive I haven't heard anything from them in almost 10 years. And I didn't like it then either.
Have faith, brother!
There’s an enormous difference between what Joe does and what Andrew Maitland does. Let us look at how they go about their work:
Andrew Maitland is a liar and a thief. He is a liar because he has told at least one prospective client that he or his ‘people’ regularly attend GPs to report from the ground. To the best of my knowledge – and that of others – he has never attended a GP in a reporting capacity in his life. He is a thief because he founded his business on the practice of copying stories and quotes from other sources, initially without attribution. He has subsequently attempted to operate under the fig leaf of “reporting the world’s media”. This is only because he has been threatened with legal action so many times. He has no sources, never checks stories (indeed, when he runs ‘original’ stories they are usually of the made-up kind, eg when he started the rumour that McLaren were going to run in black livery – based on the 2011 merchandising catalogue being heavy on black clothing).
The reason so many GMM stories subsequently turn out to be untrue is that they are copied from dubious sources – eg Bild and AS.
Joe has been working in motorsport since the 1980s. He has plenty of sources. He hears lots of gossip. He likes to stand aloof from being spoon-fed by PR.
For many years he has run stories based on insider gossip that subsquently turn out to be not 100 per cent correct. This is part and parcel of getting to the story first; if you wait for an official announcement then it is merely a case, as we all had a little giggle about yesterday with the Mercedes announcement, of who is fastest to churn out a warmed-over press release.
If you have a tip off about something you have to be very careful who you speak to when checking the facts – if the people you’re writing about get wind of it they may try to head you off. That’s why, a lot of the time, a hot news story is fundamentally incompatible with thorough fact checking.
Whether you subsequently change what you’ve written is up to the individual. Digital media gives modern journalists the luxury of going back and correcting their mistakes. You can change something and pretend it never happened or you can acknowledge it and show the edit trail publicly. My own preference would be for the latter but not everybody sees it the same way.
Trust me. They're one of the few bands around that you can still bank on
Ah well, I'll be lurking the paddock entrance at that time anyway and if I learned anything from Mariah Carey, it's that you can't hear the Padang stage from there :D
I have to admit that I never thought Joe was into nu metal - Linkin Park is probably good if you like that genre...
i always considered joe more of a hardcore rap person myself
;)
They might be different about how they go about their work, but they're the same on their handling of this particular story; both of them put out a story that proved to be false and both of them subsequently behaved as if they'd been right all along when it is quite clear they weren't. It doesn't make Joe a bad journalist. It means Joe's made a mistake (Andrew has made a mistake too but these days we're more surprised when GMM gets something right...)
Here's hoping this years game is better. ;)
Ouch! :)
Well I like it. More testing before the release though would be welcome.
I do like it, but after completing the first year of my career it just feels very samey.
I guess I don't like being at the back of the grid ;)
I don't like the fact I'd have to replace most of my computer to play F1 2010 due to the minimum specs...
Reminds me of the 2004 Japanese GP when Joe spent the run-up to the weekend in full Cassandra mode on Grandprix.com, predicting that we would all die horribly if we stayed on site. He upped sticks to Osaka airport and announced on the Saturday that he was getting the first plane home, and that we continued to be idiots to hang around because there would be no racing at all this weekend. The typhoon then shifted direction and Joe faced a barrage of mockery when he appeared (somewhat sheepishly) in the press room on Sunday morning!
Hahaaha
:D
That one's more understandable; the joke that professional BBC meteorologist Michael Fish thought that a certain night would not be windy like some people contacting him had thought hours before the nearest thing Britain's had to a hurricane is still well-remembered. Still, the story is amusing...
Also, I remember one journalist (can't remember who, which is annoying) who went to Suzuka that year, got caught up in one of the rainstorms accompanying the tornado and observed, "Even the money in my wallet was wet".
What I remember most, apart from the wet, was the number of people who asked for my autograph because they thought I was Gianmaria Bruni!
Interesting...
but you don't have to write the story as fact - "The engine will be the same, only the badging will be different.". i guess most stories aren't disected in this way though.
fair enough, but neither those things have happened. we just have a casual shrug and a 'well, what ya gonna do?'
I appear to have walked into nico rosberg in my game. http://twitpic.com/4504g0
does that mean we get to call you "britney" now?
Heheh :D
Infiniti must love this whole thing because the story has had so much more publicity than it would have normally had!
I have a suspicion Andrew Benson didn't write the BBC article as his twitter feed said he was on leave last week. I understand what Stuart is saying about not always being able to fact check, but then it should have been a blog post by Andrew Benson saying it could be true.
I'm not sure where Joe's coming from with all of this as it's not his usual style - It would have been a lot easier for him if he had corrected himself and not made such a stand I suppose.
I have a suspicion he wrote it the moment he got back - hence the rush job
Certainly plausible.
This'll have GMM worrying about the Korean GP being cancelled - South Korea is attacking its northern neighbour with helium balloons:
http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn20180-balloon-launches-breach-north-koreas-bubble.html
Just picturing Kim Jong-il with squeaky high-pitched voice... hold on, they already did that in Team America
Moving swiftly on....

Oooohh... that's a nice little earner
Afternoon all
A little sidepodspace entertainment is available if you have a few free square inches of screen space. NASA TV is showing the ISS and shuttle crews using two robotic arms to pick the permanent logistics module from the shuttle and attach it to the station. Because it is going on the Earth facing side of the station there is some fabulous footage of Earth in the background.
Hiya Steven.
Noticed today Brian Cox is back on March 6th, hadn't seen a date until today.
Thanks Lukeh. I had seen a couple of adverts but didn't know the date. I guess that makes it Sunday then
Further sidepodspace news. The shuttle mission has been extended for a day even though everything is going according to plan so far. Someone worked out that when the shuttle leaves it will be the last time all the different vehicles that go to the station are there. So they are going to put a crew in one of the 2 Soyuz that are docked and have them undock and do a flyaround to get photos and footage marking the occasion. I assume that will be done the day before Discovery leaves but I will keep an eye on it.
Very nice of him, giving us something to look forward to on a Sunday in preperation for F1
Deal.
#sidepodspace
The last 'room' to be fitted to the ISS is just being attached now. There will be other pieces attached but they will be outside bits.

Hi there,
I am unfortunately off sick from work today with some kind of stopping me from being able to think lurgy. I am supposed to be doing the daily today (for tomorrow). Ideally I'd really like to swap with somebody later in the week or something, but I don't think I'd be able to give you a decent go today - sorry.
Alex
It's like I thought I was writing an email.
I think my brain might be broken
Is it not my turn now that I am back from holidays?
(Thanks for all those who covered for me - excellent posts BTW!)
Please tell me it is still Tuesday and I haven't been painting for three days.
Oh it's Tuesday today... Okay. Ignore me. Brain broken.
Sorry for the confusion.
I hope you feel better Mr Giggles.
Fortunately, it's still Tuesday! You have time to write; I have two days until my next round of meetings :)
It's still Tuesday.
Having said that, if someone was already booked then I can wait also.
Phew :)
Me too. I don't think I could cope with being this confused.
Nooo, we missed your dailies.
Thank you though
Get well soon Alex
:)
Hope you're ok man.
:)
I have been collecting a few links today as I have been reading them, so we should have some good stuff for tomorrow ;)
Yeah I just have that kind of brain flu which makes you seem like you're really drunk
Thanks everyone :)
Best thing to do is to try and sleep.
Agreed. Drink a mug of hot water, lemon juice (bonus points for the yellow parts of the rind as well), chopped ginger root and peppermint leaves (sweetened with honey), and sleep until you feel better.
Timo in hospital http://www.formel1.de/de/3260/Glock+im+Krankenhaus%3A+Blinddarm+raus/newsID/1665425
he won't be testing in Barcelona. but it's not serious.
Don't worry me like that ;)
Hi people.
Recent photos of the race track in India: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=708714&page=28
Quite a bit still to do by the looks of it ;)
i shouldn't imagine they'll be that long - charlie noted they were ahead of schedule
Looks like it's going pretty well. I see elevation! :)
Ooooh! Skyscraper city! :D Try checking out the other forums - they have lovely pictures of old buildings and tourist spots. :)
Fabulous job: http://jobs.nma.co.uk/job/337469/hr828-website-producer
Cooooooooooool!
your last daily kicked off the slowest flamewar in internet history, can't wait to see what you've got in store :)
omg, you have to apply!
Maybe I will. Although 15 days is not many to try and wrangle my CV into something usable ;)
Since when did we trust that liar?
you have books to write :)
:)
although, slightly annoying if you get it and you've just painted the wall....
Like I would get it.
Have you seen this 24 Hour panel thing that David Walliams is doing? Not a fan of him, really, but this is quite the lineup of stuff: http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/comedy/2011/03/and-the-24-hour-panel-people-a.shtml
fun to try though. you'd have to fire yourself, citing reasons of bias of course.
Goodness me!
Nonsense. This is right up your street. Multimedia CV. Ideal for this kind of job
http://www.innovatecv.com/
Does a CV work if it just says:
CV of MrsChristine
http://sidepodcast.com
http://f1minute.com
I can't be bothered with the rest of it :)
sounds brilliant just hope they are all available afterwards as well.
you should tweet that too them.
I am Christine from the internet. When do I start?
That should be enough
Even better!
No 'Who's Start Line is It Anyway?'?
Not watching. ;)
Not sure I can trust you to look after this place by yourself.
I listened to that again recently. Fabulous
ooh, the trouble i could cause.
He won't have time. He will be too busy coding stuff that the RBR coders can't do
i have the best job in the world already ;)
have you tweeted them yet?
Soon we'll be say that
the BBCSPC has a Red Bull bias;)
This would be in you spare time
that's why she'd have to fire herself.
Not yet.
You would need to become the face of SPC
can't believe a site called NEW MEDIA AGE, doesn't allow applications via twitter.
If you can't sell yourself in 140 characters, you're not having the job.
oh.
true enough.
you'll need a long black wig though
It's the online version of the elevator pitch
BOOOOO
NASA TV just announced that they are not going to allow a Soyuz to do a flyaround of the ISS. We will still get the flyaround by the shuttle at the end of the mission. THey are keeping the extra day though so the shuttle will now land next Tuesday rather than Monday
When I was being interviewed for my job a few years ago, my (then) boss and I got chatting in the elevator and eventually the conversation drifted to sport and F1. Turn out his wife (at the time) worked for Williams
:)
so christine has become DC and now i'm becoming EJ? worst day ever.
:)
sorry

Don't forget, peoples, it's Christine's Rankings today so if you've spotted anything I should know about, give a yell.
They're probably looking for people who can communicate with them using less mainstream ideas ;)
Karun has been getting in touch with his female side
http://twitter.com/karunchandhok/status/42636717399875584
Karun's not in the rankings at the moment :(
I forgot that. F1 needs to start soon before I forget any more stuff
Love the headline!
Sergio for attracting more fans at that demo than Shanghai has in six years.
Hey folks.
How exactly did they get you two confused? I was under the impression Gianmaria was really tall, which I would have thought was a slight giveaway...
You could give Glock points for taking driver weight loss to a new level by having his appendix removed
A new event has appeared: http://factbytefactbox.com/live
Have you found out where they keep appearing from?
I haven't! FBFB is sneaky like that.
:D
Hello all. I received a belated birthday present from my sister
http://twitpic.com/452zni
I (heart) Miffy :)
It's nice to get late presents.
Miffy is the name of the rabbit btw, not my sister ;)
#justrealisednoteveryonelovesMiffy
:)
:)
:)
:)
Never heard of Miffy
She's a really cute rabbit
http://www.miffy.com/
Ok, Ok, she's a children's character but we had Miffy books when I was younger.
This probably explains better http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miffy
I did some searching and she seems to be very popular
Hello.
I worked in a warehouse a while ago on late shift, there were TVs in the break room, our first break was just as kids TV came on.. the Miffy theme was often starting as we walked in..
Although the main thing I take from that room is missing the lovely pies.
@emmastonier: Planning session done with @embuxton and new Driven Communications client. Anyone guess who it may be?!!
erm, beats me.
So here's the Peugeot 908 Hybrid - http://auto-racing.speedtv.com/article/le-mans-peugeot-unveils-908-hybrid4/
Battery KERS which isn't deployed as push-to-pass, it activates automatically when the car accelerates.
I think we need her to give us better clues
That is much better than push to pass
Now that makes more sense from an applicability point of view than a push-to-pass system, even if I am still dubious about the utility of a brake-based KERS...
More akin to how it would be (or is?) used in a road car. Teams should be allowed to use it whichever way they like.
I just don't like push to pass. Takes a lot of skill out driving
I <3 running at 212mph average speeds. #Justsayin' #Indycar #TexasMotorSpeedway
- @PippaMann
:)
She's stepping up from Indy Lights with a part-programme I think.
Surely all the juggling with when to use it takes more skill.
In theory they are in F1. It's just that you need a lot more power and capacity to make the "automatic" version work than the "push-to-pass" one, given that overtaking is at such a premium in F1.
Sportscars have less trouble passing, so the mathematics works out better with regard to "automatic" KERS.
Not really, at least not in races on the sort of shortish tracks, short race lengths and relatively homogeneous cars F1 uses. It just gets used at overtaking spots and anyone who's been paying attention to their car's performance relative to others in practise will know when to do so...
That takes different skill. But in terms of actual driving skill KERS works like a safety net for any mistake.
I don't see that it does, nobody complains when one engine has a bit more hp than another and there's not much difference between that and a car having/not having KERS.
One for Steven perhaps: http://www.thecheckeredflag.co.uk/2011/03/ecurie-ecosse-name-returns-to-international-racing/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=Feed:+TheCheckeredFlag+(The+Checkered+Flag)
There will always be differences between cars. But once you have 2 drivers racing together into a corner their ability to get the maximum out of the car they have should be the deciding factor. If the following driver can force the leading driver into a mistake he should gain from it. The leading driver should not just be able to press a button that gives him a burst of acceleration that gives back the speed lost by his mistake.
Another comeback? It's a long time since they last raced in anything. I would think David Leslie's BTCC Cavalier was the last car they fielded
I should have read the full article since it says that at the bottom
She's going to run a full oval programme with Conquest Racing, but it's not signed off yet...
I dunno, what with having to work the wing as well it could bring back human error like missing a shift if a driver forgets to activate it. Not as much fun though.
trying out event reminders in facebook: https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=159249927461908
bit of a faff to set up, i'll probably get bored unless i can find a way to automate them.
KERS in endurance racing makes more sense fullstop. Can't understand why Le Mans seems to have been so anti-KERS
They aren't anti. Anyone can run it if they like.
they could run... but not compete
Right... a nap, half a pizza and a cup of tea and I am ready to write the Daily ;)
Bernie wants artificial rain now. Wonder what his next hair-brained scheme will be? Square wheels?
http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/01032011/58/ecclestone-wants-artificial-rain-f1.html
Too heavy?
He's on about fake rain again? He's been bringing that up for 10 or 15 years.
He's right though. All the best races this year involved inclement weather.
He does that with all his ideas. He just trots them out at random when he is not getting any media coverage
Every off season too. He likes to ruffle the feathers.
But it is all because of aerodynamics
Yep very true.
Well, that was fun (sarcasm smiley). Have spent the evening taking a Microsoft Access tutorial and assessment for a new temp job. It's a long time since I last used Access so I hope it went well. Will get told tomorrow if I have the assignment.
Access can be a bit dull but hopefully it'll go ok for you, good luck janna.
Evening all.
Good luck with that
Hi Lukeh. Loved the 70s zebra reference on Twitter. :). Those shirts really are something else man.
Ohh we had a 2 hour meeting tonight and that was one of the main topics. I really don't want to bring any negativity into the comments but I can honestly say the whole thing with this new 'look' all left me even more disillusioned.
I know it's just a uniform and it's not the only reason for it (I could go on for hours :P) but yeeeeeeesh. Really are something else.
Thanks guys. They want someone to help with analysis of management information so I'm hoping it'll be more Excel than Access. I could do with the job because I will increase my hourly rate by half of what I am currently earning.
The lady on the tills at my store was similarly impressed when I commented on her new look.
Which hotel did you nick the curtains from then? :P
It's all going a bit Sound of Music
One half of the rankigns: http://sidepodcast.com/post/its-all-about-hospital-visits-in-christines-rankings-this-week

Good luck. Access made my head hurt, working out one-to-many, etc, etc. :)

Hello (from Iceland)
Hello :)
Hi Kathi
Have any volcanoes erupted yet?
No. Bit disappointing, isn't it?
I am sure one will erupt for you soon
Did you see me wave at you?
Copenhagen's airport is huuuge.
I did - you probably flew over my house as I live right near the airport :)
And very weird in it's layout. Has a great English bookstore though :)
I feel as if I had to cross the **** thing at least five times.
I was too tired to look at any of the shops, but
no but. don't know where the but came from
True.
Ping - http://toomuchracing.com/2011/03/01/tmr-game-2011-week-6/
TMR Game results, congratulations VivaF1. :)
GP2 Asia replacing Bahrain with.. Imola. An interesting choice. Not really very Asian but I'd love to see fast open wheelers there again. Can't say I want a full GP though, not yet. I loved the atmosphere and that it always signalled F1 'coming home' after flying away, but the races were so damned boring. :)
Imola was never the same after 94.
Partly that but also the cars just outgrew it. It has been renovated though.
aww I have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of my Fanvision but they just emailed me to say it hasn't even shipped yet as they're still finalising the user interface. They should change their order email that says 5-10 days shipping!
Huh!
That is odd. Good that it's not being ignored being so close to the end of that season though
Evening peeps
Hey
Hello!
I suppose Imola's had practise being an honorary member of places other than the one where it is located...
Hey Kai, great timing.
I was gonna make some notes on the Wiki tonight for SPB
1st or last weekends in April, sound fair?
They can take Valencia too if they wish :)
Yeah, sounds good to me.
I think GP2 Asia can afford to be pickier than F1...
Or when bored...
It's becoming a bit 'Father Jack'. Shouting random phrases after an afternoon snooze suddenly comes to an abrupt end
AMR One - http://www.dailysportscar.com/viewArticle.cfm?articleUID=73C0C508-1143-FDC9-35D67673EDFA83F9
It ain't like the coupe, that's for sure :(
Because traditionally they've seen it as a gimmick and tried to encourage efficient diesels instead. Even so, they managed to get KERS the same year as F1's first attempt and have been dipping a toe into the world of hybrids.
Some people do, but we're used to some teams having better equipment than others. We're not used to the equipment making talent less relevant and reducing the amount of racing going on, which is what KERS has done in F1 so far.
Open House for my "PragueBlog". Take a look if you want to. I took the restrictions off of it for a day or two.

Seems you have to sign up for 'Blogger' though
Is that another Google thing?
Wrong link, it takes me to my old dashboard.
hm
Yeah, could be.
Oh well, it was an idea...
Me too
Well this is fun. :(
You want the blog URL: http://solongandthanksforallthefishies.blogspot.com/
Let me try this. I've never done this, people. http://solongandthanksforallthefishies.blogspot.com/
Yup
Ooh, I've just had a pop-up calendar notice to set the DVR for Rally Mexico this weekend! :D
Thanks Pat.
