Can you believe it. This time next week you will know the result of the Australian Grand Prix. You will see how the extraordinarily talented Timo Glock gets Marussia Virgin's first ever point, a spectacular crash which takes out half the field leaving Sergio Perez to gain a debut win.

If you are asking why I didn't say Kobayashi will win, well, lets be honest here, a spectacular crash will involve him somehow.

On with the daily.

Bluffer: Llllllaaaaaaaaaaadies and gentlemen, welcome to the Sidepodcast Arena, Rockall, for the chance to become the SBA Chaaaaampion of the World. In association with Red Nose Productions and Crash Ice Promotions, we are pleased to present our main event. After successes for the Bib against Mario Ballotelli, and the knockout of England from Ireland, lets get this show on the road. In the yellow corner, hailing from Miiiiiiilan, Italy, Piiiiiiiiiiirellllliiiiii.

[Entrance is reliant on lights, with several different colours, red, yellow, white, orange for example focusing on Pirelli, it strolls down composed, before getting worn out before it's reached the ropes and requiring a change]

Rowling: Well, Punce, this one looks weak on paper, I honestly can't see this lasting long.

Punce: He's gonna get Stoner-ed here, it's pointless trying, the guy he's up against is undefeated in almost a billion bouts, he can make a match up that looks like a brawl into something which lasts less than two rounds.

Rowling: Back to Bluffer.

Bluffer: Aaaaaand in the red corner, hailing from Brain, Your Body, the undefeated, SBA Chaaaaaaaaampion of the Woooooooooorld, Common Seeeeeeeeeeeeense.

[Entrance is full of style, he struts his stuff with fireworks either side as he walks past, to his side are two rather good looking girls, behind him people on unicycles are juggling with fire while an elephant sings the intro music of 'I Am the One and Only']

Rowling: This kid looks brilliant.

Punce: Oh I love him. He's Giggling here, on the weigh in, on the interviews on TV and Radio, this boy has got it in the bag and he knows it, Pirelli knows it, frankly, the whole arena knows it.

Rowling: Yeah.

Bluffer: Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you 12 rounds of boxing at the highest standard, here we go, lllllllleeeeeeeeets get ready to ruuuuuuuuuuuuuuumblllleeee.

Rowling: So they touch gloves and we are off, Pirelli goes in for a quick start, jab lands on the gloves, Common Sense is jibing him, telling him its not going to work, he tries a multitude of options now Pirelli, going for the same, that looked the same, Common Sense thinks the same, he's got him on the ropes now, Common Sense is battering him, Pirelli can't hold up much longer and it is down, down, down. The ref counts 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. No signs of life. 9. 10. Pirelli are out, Common Sense maintains his unbeaten run, and he is happy. Fist pump to the crowd, easier than Solis, easier than Khan. Thank you and goodnight says he.

Bluffer: Maintaining his SBA Championship, the reigning and undesputed Chaaaaaampion of the World, Commmon Sense!

The left-hand side of my monitor, by the look of it.

How does it work out that @F1Minute is Godfather?

not a clue. kinda clever. oddly gavin is christine's godfather.

  • Alianora La Canta21/03/2011 at 00:39

How does it work out that @F1Minute is Godfather?

I don't know. Much as I don't know how @clubforce can be my Twitter's godfather (supportee, yes, but godfather?) My Twitter birthday is 14 May, incidentally.

  • Pat W21/03/2011 at 00:39

@TooMuchRacing was born 24 January 2009, Godfather is @OneLapDown oddly enough.

    @PatWotton was born 15 June 2009, Godfather is @TnMChris.

    Sidepodcast is F1Minute's godfather too.

My godfather is exectweets?? If you keep clicking on the godfather I end up back at 2007 with two people who are each other's godfather

    No

One of my followers has no godfather at all, interestingly enough.

  • Alianora La Canta21/03/2011 at 00:46

  • Steven Roy21/03/2011 at 00:47

I am sure Amy will approve

  • Alianora La Canta21/03/2011 at 00:47

Sorry, that should have been @H_Kovalainen. Also, @H_Kovalainen and @katahyde have each other as godfathers, confirming Steven's statement that it's not just founders who have that effect.

  • Steven Roy21/03/2011 at 00:48

I guess we need another site now that tells us whose godfather we are

that's a good idea. from what i can tell, a godfather is the person who introduced you to twitter, but in the case of f1minute that's clearly not correct.

Clubforce definitely didn't introduce me to Twitter, though I do remember telling one of the fora I was on about it about 3 months before joining the network.

  • Alianora La Canta21/03/2011 at 00:57

I was introduced to Twitter by my brother who ironically does not have a Twitter account...

Er errr. From Shane in Melbourne:

    @shagers:

The temps at Albert Park this weekend, are very similar to the Valencia test, where the tyres lasted only 12 laps a stint. 4 stops likely.

It feels like someone is driving nails into my side. Like a stitch but I'm just sitting in a chair so I figure it's like a heart attack but it's my kidneys.

My twitter godfather is apparently the McLaren eShop. I don't get it.

The pain seems to have subsided, I think the comments fixed me. Thanks comments.

I have to go shopping at lunch time to find some sort of portable power recharger thingy for my phone because I don't think it's going to last a whole day at the track and you need a screwdriver to change the battery in it. Any suggestions of good ones to look out for?

Rain would be fun, that would completely screw up the Pirelli analysis, keeps the uncertainty a little longer. Mind you I reckon Melbourne could be the few races I prefer dry.

as someone sitting in the stands, I agree. Two years of being rained on in a row would not be fair, especially when I'm expecting to be poured on two weeks later.

It's also a unique course, the results there in the dry aren't always the same as the rest of the year anyway. Doesn't need that added twist.

I was being nosy on the BARB TV ratings site (which seems to have now crashed), I'm amazed at the small numbers Eurosport has. Maybe that was just for the particular week.

I was seeing if it would be feasible - if I had time - to see how different motorsports rated. Looks like you have to sign up for the detailed stuff, otherwise you can only get 'top tens' for each channel.

One thing I learned in business is never to trust the smiles and appearances etc . It is all only the packaging. The fact that Tony Fernades has the image of smiling friendly person does not neccessarily mean he is without blemish in all of this (although he may be)... The same applies to Hunt and to Bahar (although not too many people see Bahar as a nice guy in all this :-) ) When people smell opportunities in the world of big business ( big being very relative terms) the gloves are off ...

The first GP+ of the year is done and dusted and the newsletter rebranded, along with various websites. I note from some of the comments that things could be done better. Probably they can, but I am not geeky enough to know that stuff!. Anyway, apart from one or two curmudgeons, most people see to think things look better, which was the aim of the redesigns.

    :D

  • Paul21/03/2011 at 12:01

Hmmmm flicking through GP+ and there is a big air Asia add. Now, I'm not so surprised about the bias I read from mr Saward.

  • RubberGoat21/03/2011 at 12:01

Joy of joys. Mr Legard will be doing boat race comms... but for TV or radio?

My friend was in that years ago and he watches that every year!

  • Leigh O'Gorman21/03/2011 at 12:02

  • RubberGoat21/03/2011 at 12:06

    Interesting.

I also got an alternate viewpoint last weekend on the Liuzzi/Di Resta saga. Apparently Liuzzi signed some sort of deal with Mike Gascoyne shortly before MG was booted out of the team, and the deal had loads of penalty clauses in Tonio's favour but none for the team on behalf of performance.

It was alleged that Mercedes paid off Liuzzi as they wanted Di Resta in the car.

  • Paul21/03/2011 at 12:07

    That, I can believe.

    For better or worse

Smart guys. If MG knew he was going to be forced out, saddle the team with a contract they can't get out of.

It was alleged that Mercedes paid off Liuzzi as they wanted Di Resta in the car.

I thought that may have happened.

  • Paul21/03/2011 at 12:11

I have to sleep, but I will leave with these thoughts:

There was some in these comments alleging possible bias of autosport towards Renault because of sponsorship deals. Now I see GP+ with three (!) air Asia adds. Alll I can say is hmmmmmmmmmm.

Roll on the discussion I think :-)

Oh I agree completely. I just wonder about how some people were ready do accuse autosport of some sort of bias.

Oh I agree completely. I just wonder about how some people were ready do accuse autosport of some sort of bias.

I see what you mean, but I think the difference comes from the way Autosport planted it on the front cover and then followed through with a story about, as opposed to just plain old advertising

  • Amy21/03/2011 at 12:31

Yep - just hope someone breaks into the HD feed

  • Alianora La Canta21/03/2011 at 13:48

I thought the deal dated to early 2008 (i.e. well before Mike left). Which still leaves me mystified as to why any additional deal in late 2008 (the time Mike left Force India) would have been signed with him, considering that it is Mallya and Kolles who controlled contracts at that point (possibly aided by the HR department). How this was ever meant to work confuses me.

  • Leigh O'Gorman21/03/2011 at 13:49

He's old and past it anyway isn't he?

yeah, but he still has a lot of fans and gains some attention for being controversial - it's all very very sad

  • Alianora La Canta21/03/2011 at 13:49

It was alleged that Mercedes paid off Liuzzi as they wanted Di Resta in the car.

That bit makes total sense. Given that it's already been said di Resta got his seat in exchange for a discount on Mercedes' side, it would make sense that when an obstacle to di Resta's appointment was found afterwards, that Mercedes would pay for it to be "moved" - and it would also explain why it took an age for the deal to be announced.

  • Alianora La Canta21/03/2011 at 13:50

Oh I agree completely. I just wonder about how some people were ready do accuse autosport of some sort of bias.

There's a difference between having clearly-demarcated adverts in the publication and having effectively advertorial (and unmarked advertorial at that) in the news.

  • Alianora La Canta21/03/2011 at 13:52

Hmmmm flicking through GP+ and there is a big air Asia add. Now, I'm not so surprised about the bias I read from mr Saward.

i'm just putting the question out there and waiting to see what amy&co dig up tomorrow.

if joe has somehow managed to pull the biggest user of gmm away from gmm, then he'll all be your hero tomorrow.

if not then fair enough, that's a good reason not to subscribe.

This is more "straw that broke the camel's back" than the one and only reason - the heading font is another, as is the steadily-increasing irrationality in the blog entries (particularly in what looks like a bad attitude towards his readers).

And motorsport.com still appear to be cribbing other people's work, even replicating incorrect capitalisation. The only difference I can see is "commentary" sections which, to be fair, are at least original work (not cribbed from Joe, GMM or anyone else).

I couldn't tell that looking at it - it looked like it was meant to be a heading. When the font interferes in determining whether what is written is significant or not, it surely has to qualify as unreadable (at least to the person whose determination is being so interfered).

*throws new sidepodlogo in the bin*

If you make it clear from the positioning that the logo is a logo, then it can be as incomprehensible as it likes. The worst that could happen is mild bemusement.

It's when you put the logo in a place where a heading (or other content that might be expected to need to be readable) might be expected that the proper problems occur.

  • Alianora La Canta21/03/2011 at 14:23

surely the mcdonalds 'm' doesn't make you furious?

The McDonald's "M" is a logo and always positioned as such. The Nike tick doesn't even look like a letter and is therefore processed as a picture.

    what the?

"sometimes having wrong story is better to have no story" begins to make sense ?

Unfortunately I had to learn about that "Motorsport.com" association the hard way, after paying my 2011 subscription and downloading the magazine...

The preview issue is not too bad although for those reading the blog regularly it may feel like a bit of a collection of recycled although expanded recent blog entries.

  • RubberGoat21/03/2011 at 14:54

But he then said he was different from GMM because he got the wrong story from inside the paddock (and some stories could not be verified) whilst GMM just copy other people's work?

Have been reading this article this evening and it pretty much sums up how greedy the gaming industry can be regarding this new wave of independent titles on iOS and even stuff like Minecraft developed by one person. It's quite sad to see how single minded Nintendo can be with this kind of stuff, seems they're happy to ignore the booming business of the iOS market...

It's quite sad to see how single minded Nintendo can be with this kind of stuff, seems they're happy to ignore the booming business of the iOS market...

If they keep their eyes closed and sing La La La then maybe the DS won't be doomed after all

If they keep their eyes closed and sing La La La then maybe the DS won't be doomed after all

The new 3DS is released this week and I'm sure it'll be filled with loads of shovelware just like the Wii and DS are. Both are good systems but it's incredibly hypocritical to act like the iOS platform is just flooded with nonsense apps when your own systems have more shovelware than A+ titles - I mean, the amount of My babies, Petz, Board Games etc games I've seen on shelves in shops is just a retail equivalent of the iTunes store having loads of random apps.

Can understand if they're protecting their own system to a degree but what harm has led to iOS being very much open in this aspect?

Incredible. This is the greed that is ruining the art of video games - iOS games reflect the pioneer spirit the gaming industry used to have...

Really do think that DS could have a solid indie scene with downloadable titles with a partner like Nintendo supporting it. You find nowadays the best innovation as you say Gavin is coming from such iOS games in some of the ideas being produced.

To be fair Microsoft actively support independent games and have a marketplace dedicated to cheap downloadable games on the 360 in the same way iTunes Store does, and I've bought a few fantastic games on there over the years you simply wouldn't see from big name developers with a huge budget. Money =/= ideas.

I do like studio games, but I like indie and downloadable games too as they add a nice variety.

I think that's why the iOS platform is so appealing. Developers and independent offerings are there for all to choose from.

  • Mr C21/03/2011 at 20:24

i hear what you're saying about ios, and it's nice to let people compete. however, small startup games companies only have maybe anther 12 months to get established before the cost of handheld development skyrockets.

at the moment, restricted graphics means you or i could make a semi-decent iphone game. one or maybe two more chip updates and you'll need a team of 3-5 and then a whole office floor.

nintendo know where tech is going and soon one person will be too small to make a difference i reckon.

  • Mr C21/03/2011 at 20:27

as an aside, the internets are heading in a similar direction. a decade from now and i don't think one person could design a web site on their own. once we get 3d apis and you can build immersive experiences, you'll need staffing levels of a magazine.

    maybe.

  • Lukeh21/03/2011 at 20:32

It's a fair point. I just think it's a little bit dismissive of nintendo to simply push aside that kind of developer in such a way I suppose when some of the best ideas can come from so called garage developers.

50p was my budget but I was allowed that every school day as long as I'd been good. Occasionally I'd save up and buy myself a 55p cake slice or cream bun (and 45p of something else) - my first experience of saving.

I assume they need some kind of permission to do that like logging an estimated flight plan. I have seen so many of those and this is the first time that has occurred to me

Probably. They're PhD students, so it'll probably all be in the accompanying thesis when they get around to writing it.

  • Amy21/03/2011 at 23:12

ooh an email from fanvision, they must have read my mind, i was thinking last night that i needed to hear from them.

Now I know how to collect my G3 on Thursday! Eeeek how will I sleep on Wednesday night, I love new gadgets.

  • Christine21/03/2011 at 23:14

Yeah, they've all come through now so I have to decide by 6th May. I'm off to Leicester tomorrow and Cardiff on the 30th, hopefully I can decide then and be happy it's the right thing.

If you haven't looked at them yet, slightly confused what the fuss is?

I'm going to buy a TuneTalk SIM for when I'm in Malaysia. There I go, giving Tony even more money :D But they sell them on Air Asia flights! So convenient! And data is only 1.6 Australian cents per megabyte so I can comment and tweet aaaaall weekend.

I wonder how much the race activation fee will be next year, I see for the football one it's $5 per game, if it's $5 per race that'd be super excellently cheap.

yeah the cost only includes the first years usage, which would be excellent if I was doing more races. hmm. Wheres that budget.

  • Kai21/03/2011 at 23:34

Nothing will change for at least 12 months if the deal is approved

Yeah, it's being appealed because it would essentially make Verizon a very, very tiny little #3, and uncompetitive.

  • Kai21/03/2011 at 23:35

I think they just assume the customer will cave and buy a new smart phone and a 2 year plan

It's all about control and not giving us what we need, or at least that's my experience with them over the years, and I have them for DSL and phone.

  • Bassano21/03/2011 at 23:35

Yeah, it's being appealed because it would essentially make Verizon a very, very tiny little #3, and uncompetitive.

If AT&T and T-Mobile become one [eventually], wouldn't that make Verizon a small 2nd?

  • Kai21/03/2011 at 23:39

    They could buy Sprint

Personally I don't care, as long as my phone works. I could use some cheaper rates, but if AT&T will eventually get even bigger, then that's unlikely. I guess I always remember their anti-trust case against them years and years ago. I'm suspicious of them.

Tickets must be selling well, the Piquet grandstand is back! We haven't had that one since 2008. I'm confused as to where it is though because the sheet says turn 3 but the red dot showing where it is is at turn 13. The old Piquet stand used to be at turn 14.

I'd recommend watching practices on Friday from a couple of different GA spots then, because it's Friday they won't be too busy and crammed with people. The one by the Clarke stand and the one by the Waite stand are where me and my brother went on Friday the year we had tickets for the same stand all weekend.

  • Amy22/03/2011 at 01:49

I shall be in touch then,

if you're staying on Commercial Road get the number 72 (Melbourne University) tram and get off at Stop 14 - Arts Precinct. Then change onto the #1 towards South Melbourne Beach, the tram I'll be on is scheduled to be at Stop 14 at 5.18pm. :)

Wow: Button has apparently lapped Mt Panorama at Bathurst in 1:48 in the 2009 McLaren. Can't wait to see the footage.

20 seconds faster than the V8 lap record

Yup. even faster than expected I think

    is this old news?

Team Lotus has today finalised its 2011 driver line-up with confirmation that Karun Chandhok is the team's Reserve Driver, joining Race Drivers Heikki Kovalainen and Jarno Trulli, Third Driver Luiz Razia and Test Drivers Davide Valsecchi and Ricardo Teixeira in the Anglo / Malaysian team's stable of driving talent.

    http://www.teamlotus.co.uk/news/2011/karun-chandhok-joins-team-lotus-as-reserve-driver

they seem to be rivalling renault for spare drivers.

  • paul22/03/2011 at 02:34

Hmmm Lowndes did a 1:49.5 at Bathurst in the McLaren. not bad for a taxi driver, although Button said he could probably do a 1:40 if he was pushing.

Button went round 1.5 seconds faster than someone who had never sat inan F1 car. Disappointing

sounds like he wasn't pushing, and I think it takes time to learn that circuit. Lowndes did do a season of F3000 as Montoya's team mate.

  • Bassano22/03/2011 at 02:37

Button went round 1.5 seconds faster than someone who had never sat inan F1 car. Disappointing

Can't imagine he was on the limit, 3 days before FP1

There was a tweet earlier saying Button's time was 1:46

8 seconds off the pace he thinks he could do takes so little effort you would not believe it. They should have put Lewis in the car at least he would have made an effort.

A season in F3000 10 years ago is hardly preparation for an F1car on a track like that. He should not have been able to get within ten seconds of Jenson

  • paul22/03/2011 at 02:42

8 seconds off the pace he thinks he could do takes so little effort you would not believe it. They should have put Lewis in the car at least he would have made an effort.

I can't sleep. So tempted to ring in sick for work.

  • Steven Roy22/03/2011 at 02:43

Can't imagine he was on the limit, 3 days before FP1

He was just playing at that speed.

When I was doing a test day in FFord I was doing laps of Oulton Park in about 1:40 getting to know the track. I decided to do a really slow lap and I felt like I stopped and looked at each corner. Fast down the straights but braking early and taking it really slow through the corners. It felt like walking pace and the difference between giving it everything I had and walking pace was 2 seconds a lap or 2%.

8 seconds off what he thinks he can do means it ain't worth the time to watch the video

  • Steven Roy22/03/2011 at 02:43

haha, yeah i think you might be right about Lewis. Mayeb that's why they didnt choose him!

That did occur to me when I first heard about that

maybe my fued with Jarno will intensify so much this year that he will bring down the team average.

I feel like I should get something for him to sign this year so I don't snub him two years in a row but really, I just want Heikki to sign my Heikki Lotus Racing cap.

This is getting silly considering how little seat time these boys are going to get.

Apparently, thanks to Giggles Radio, I seem to have found out that I am a closet Eurythmics fan.... Even to the point that I just realized that I have their album Savage, which does not have a single hit in it!.....

  • Amy22/03/2011 at 04:41

Whether that means first fan ever or first fan in Australia, I do not know

I don't think it's something I'd like to do. Too much pressure!
