Hey all! Guess what? You’ll never believe what I have to tell you…

7 DAYS UNTIL THE START OF THE SEASON!!

Oh my goodness!! Are you excited? (I am, but as you can see I’m containing it well). A little bit of F1 news for you then, Pirelli have come up with a colour co ordinated system for their tyres so we can see which compounds are being used. Well it’s certainly a different idea, whether it’s a good one or not.. only time will tell as they say!

While the F1 personal are busy preparing for and flying to Australia for the start of the season, it’s non stop work at Sidepodcast Towers too! Mr and Mrs C have been working hard to provide coverage for a number of events. First there was Red Nose Day on Friday, then on Saturday we live commented Sebring AND Live Crushed Ice, for a while both simultaneously. Thank you Mr and Mrs C for all the work you’ve done this weekend, but of course the work you always do for us. It really is appreciated. I can think of only one way to thank you.

Moving away from motorsports, I think Nekama the baby leopard may well be one of the cutest baby animals ever!

However, Antares the baby Siberian tiger does come close. How adorable!! I totally want one!

So, as is normal for my daily posts lets take a look at some interesting pieces of artwork, and inventions I’ve found this week;

• How about starting with a mega bridge? When I say mega, I mean amazing! The proposed Paik Nam June Media Bridge would not only serve as a bridge but also act as a park, museum, shopping centre and much more! Plus it’ll be covered in solar panels so will be able to generate it’s own energy. How cool!

• Everyone wants a pirate ship for a bedroom once in their life, even for a second. Well someone has actually made his bedroom into a ship!

• Here is a link just for dog owners, how about putting your dog in an epic dog house? I hear some of you say you don’t have a dog… but that’s okay because these dog houses may tempt you to buy one. I know I’m tempted! I wonder what they do for cats?

• Seeing as last week people seemed to like the photos of little a little model world, how about some of these latest shots (not by Slinkachu like last week) of some which make use of the much loved Apple Iphone.

• If you’ve ever considered trying your hand at street photography, make sure you check out these amazing shots first. Very beautifully done.

• Oh and on the other scale of photography, here is a sneak peak into the behind the scenes of some rather much larger shoots.

Also, if you’re bored at any point today, how about making some lovely colourful cupcakes?

Look out for a guest post on our trip to Mercedes Benz World yesterday. Lukeh and I headed to the Surrey attraction yesterday afternoon and had a great time! We’ll fill you in with the details the moment we can!

I also bring the very sad news that Knut the Polar Bear has died. RIP Knut.

Podcast of the Week

I have more sad news I’m afraid everyone, today is the last podcast of the week. I promised I would try to keep you occupied during the off season and this being the last Sunday before the racing starts again means that this is the final look back at podcasts from the past for a while.

To mark the occasion I wanted to feature a rather special show. I thought for a while before the answer was clear. Could the week before the start of the season be seen as a sort of Parade lap? Well in my eyes it can! So I’ve chosen a brilliant example the best race build up you can get.

I wont spoil it for you, I’ll let you all see for yourself how awesome it can be live streaming the making of cupcakes!

I’ll leave you with these rather inspirational words.

See you next week!

The answer is the same answer that is used in militaries worldwide for complaints about being issued a uniform that is too big......

I see from Facebook you went to Singapore when there wasn't a race on. That's your first mistake!

  • Journeyer20/03/2011 at 08:43

I see from Facebook you went to Singapore when there wasn't a race on. That's your first mistake!

Hahahaha! That's because I wanted to see what Singapore had OTHER than F1 - and that would be impossible over the race weekend. Besides, that was to celebrate the anniversary with the now-fiancée. :D I went in 2008, remember? ;)

  • Journeyer20/03/2011 at 08:44

    I ain't never seen a Vettel win

ahh, so you saw Hamilton, Alonso... and who? did you mean Button or Barrichello?

Singapore is the easiest place to explore because you don't need to go to the track until night time so you can be touristy in the day. Even though I've only been there for races I think I've seen all I want to see. Malaysia on the other hand I am fully prepared to see none of at all. And 2008 was yeeeears ago! Your pictures of the Marina Bay Sands made me think I should check out that Skydeck this year.

Is the fiancee into F1? You should work on that so that that can be the only reason you ever go places in the future.

  • Amy20/03/2011 at 08:46

ahh, so you saw Hamilton, Alonso... and who? did you mean Button or Barrichello?

I've seen Hamilton win twice, Button win twice and Alonso win three.

We tried to be touristy, but we only went to nearby spots (to avoid the extra-crowded MRT that weekend). That meant we had to walk. In the process, I aggravated a sprain I suffered just 3 weeks before after I lost control of an ATV and hit the grass tipped on my left side. I didn't need to go to hospital, but I went through a lot of gauze that weekend. And I didn't mind it one bit. ;)

Haha! She's a casual fan - she was my companion at that inaugural GP. :) Best. Experience. Ever. :D I'll bring her to another GP when funds allow. (Australia maybe? ;) ) But there's lot of non-F1 places we want to see too. :)

ahh fair enough. The MRT wasn't anymore crowded than Melbourne public transport is every single day of the year so it didn't bother me but I guess it could be annoying if you're not used to feeling like a sardine.

I figure the non-F1 places can wait until they have F1 races. Or tennis. One day I might make a trip that's not based around sport, but it'll be years away, I have too many sports to see first :)

Wasn't 2008 unbelievably crowded? I remember getting stuck in an underground crossing that had an MRT connection for 15 whole minutes - that alone was enough to convince us. :| We made use of the MRT almost all the time last year, though. :)

Hehehe. She's already asking me if we can see the World Cup in 2014. That is, if we don't decide to go to Italy first - that would be unbelievably expensive, but an amazing win-win too! :D

but isn't the standard age that doctors ask you to have babies is around 30? it's definitely possible after that age (my mom gave birth to my sis at 37), but it does get harder.

  • Jordan F120/03/2011 at 12:50

Hmmm, I have discovered a flaw in the Giggles Radio delivery system. The parameters are designed in such a way that the only version of the song "Popcorn" that can be listerned to is the "Crazy Frog" version as all other versions of "Popcorn" are pre 1980.

    {NOOOOOOOOOO !}

Never knew how old that song really was....

it's not a great solution. it's not HD, and it takes up valuable screen space needed for commenting.

good reason. I am intrigued by this HD thing, I am almost sad Melbourne is first so I have to wait to see the HD and hear how DC goes as a commentator.

  • Alex Andronov20/03/2011 at 12:55

I may not have explained myself well enough. The rule is that each episode I can only play songs that have been released up to the year that I'm dealing with. At least 2 songs today are from 1979.

But I am trying to show my Audio Biography so the songs that have meant something to me... So as I became older I listened to a lot of much older music and so as we move forward in time I will be talking about older songs I found out about and gigs I went to by older bands and so on. So the scope gets larger and larger.

However at the age of 0 in 1980 and 1 in 1981 I didn't know much of what was going on so it's hard to justify going any earlier...

But last show I played Alexander Beetle by Melanie even though that was from the 70s because I know my mother played it to me when I was a baby.

Well, if not too fussy about what type of signal you get, Radios have been know to take an Audio signal out of the air.... :P I suggest you get either UHF or VHF type as they come with AM or FM but then you can also listen in to to Air and Marine traffic as well! :P

ESPN has the weight to fix it, and this was their first go. So I reckon by their next 'big deal' race which is Petit Le Mans, they'll have made improvements.

Especially as they will have several "small deal" races of practise!

i'm just cynical about motorsport online, i really don't see anyone having much of a clue. live timing was crap again yesterday. live timing is trivial to get right yet every single series we watch has issues, from the smallest to f1.

It's a scaling issue. Getting live timing or anything else to work shown on one screen is easy (any karting track in the UK can prove that). Getting the same information to work on a network is considerably more difficult and the larger the network the bigger the difficulties. This is especially true when one cannot predict ahead of schedule how many people will want the information at a given moment. It's why internet contention ratios matter. It's why network administrators get paid so much. It's why you have to be shifting many terabytes of data before getting a discount on hosting. From a different angle, it's even why you need a better internet connection the more sites and the more data-intensive the things you wish to do at a given time.

  • Alianora La Canta20/03/2011 at 14:30

I don't understand why streaming always fails - free or paid. Maybe these people just don't research how many people are actually gonna tune in?

Do you know if it is possible to convert an MP4 (AAC) file to MP3? My car stereo doesn't understand MP4.

Do you know if it is possible to convert an MP4 (AAC) file to MP3? My car stereo doesn't understand MP4.

    The MP4s being iTunes purchases.

    The MP4s being iTunes purchases.

By the look of it, you need a virtual CD drive and "burn" the tracks to the "CD". Afterwards converting to MP3 is exactly like converting a normal CD to MP3 except that you don't have the hassle of changing "discs" every 12 tracks...

  • Alex Andronov20/03/2011 at 15:00

Do you know if it is possible to convert an MP4 (AAC) file to MP3? My car stereo doesn't understand MP4.

You can do it in iTunes... You should be able to right click on the song and choose "convert to MP3"

I right click a track and the only option is 'Convert to AAC' which makes no sense because that's what they are already :)

  • Alex Andronov20/03/2011 at 15:02

  • Alex Andronov20/03/2011 at 15:05

I wouldn't have expected the export choice to be under import..

Yes it seems pretty confusing... But what you are basically saying is, "make this my default format". But that's certainly not what the preference says!

The ESPN3 stream in the states worked perfectly for me, on my mac! I was very impressed.

Not for me in the northeast on my mac. It was okay, but it would freeze, and flash crashed once, but that's typical.

    Take three

    #sidepodspace

Time for a little sidepodspace update.

The Messenger space craft entered the orbit of the planet Mercury during week. It is the first craft ever to do so. We will not get photos from it until March 29th.

    http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/messenger/main/index.html

I mentioned this one during the week but it was late at night and not many people were around. This is maybe my favourite space news in a long time. It's all about space ran which we knew happened but seasonal space rain storm on Titan are very new and mean these patterns probably repeat on lots of worlds.

  • RubberGoat20/03/2011 at 19:22

I wonder if Stoner is saving fuel to let him really go for it when he gets the lead back. He looks like he is not really going for it down the straight

    He has done that before.

  • RubberGoat20/03/2011 at 19:22

Stoner is usually mighty round here.

  • RubberGoat20/03/2011 at 19:23

I wonder if Rossi's performance all down to his injury or because the bike is not suited to him?

  • Steven Roy20/03/2011 at 19:23

Ithought Rossi was giving him that position but Spies just went in way too deep

  • Steven Roy20/03/2011 at 19:24

I wonder if Rossi's performance all down to his injury or because the bike is not suited to him?

I think most of it is injury and a little of it is bike. Given what he and Jerry Burgess did at Yamaha I don't think sorting the bike is a big deal

  • RubberGoat20/03/2011 at 19:25

I think most of it is injury and a little of it is bike. Given what he and Jerry Burgess did at Yamaha I don't think sorting the bike is a big deal

Yeah, except all of Stoner's team mates have had big trouble on the Ducati. Who is Rossi's team mate BTW?

  • Steven Roy20/03/2011 at 19:26

Yeah, except all of Stoner's team mates have had big trouble on the Ducati. Who is Rossi's team mate BTW?

I was thinking about that at the start of the race and I am not sure. Hayden?

  • Pat W20/03/2011 at 19:26

    Yes

  • RubberGoat20/03/2011 at 19:27

I was thinking about that at the start of the race and I am not sure. Hayden?

Think so. He's been a bit rubbish since they switched to smaller engines.

  • Steven Roy20/03/2011 at 19:28

The Ducati is unusual but Yamaha was utterly useless. All sorts of people went there and couldn't win a race. Rossi won his first race and first championship he ran with them. Such a huge achievement

  • RubberGoat20/03/2011 at 19:29

The Ducati is unusual but Yamaha was utterly useless. All sorts of people went there and couldn't win a race. Rossi won his first race and first championship he ran with them. Such a huge achievement

Yeah he was challenging in his first year there. The Yamaha doesn't do as well at this race but it will be interesting to see how Jorge does this year.

  • Steven Roy20/03/2011 at 19:29

Think so. He's been a bit rubbish since they switched to smaller engines.

I think he has been rubbish since he hasn't had Rossi to sort the bike for him. Another Alex Criville who managed to get a championship as the result of someone else's efforts

  • Steven Roy20/03/2011 at 19:29

Yeah he was challenging in his first year there. The Yamaha doesn't do as well at this race but it will be interesting to see how Jorge does this year.

Yeah me too. Good rider, but I think it might be Honda vs. Rossi this yeat.

  • Steven Roy20/03/2011 at 19:31

  • Steven Roy20/03/2011 at 19:44

Great win by Stoner. Looks like Honda will be tough to beat this year.

I think they will dominate. Hopefully some circuits will favour other bikes and Pedrosa can threaten Stoner

  • Steven Roy20/03/2011 at 19:47

I would love to know why Dovisioso gets a factory Honda. He is nowhere near good enough for that

  • Steven Roy20/03/2011 at 19:48

    Lorenzo seems a bit over-emotional

Great win by Stoner. Looks like Honda will be tough to beat this year.

I think they will dominate. Hopefully some circuits will favour other bikes and Pedrosa can threaten Stoner

Can't disagree with that. The only saving grace is that if Rossi gets fast he will end up catching up if the Honda riders take points off each other.

I would love to know why Dovisioso gets a factory Honda. He is nowhere near good enough for that

Dunno, he doesn't score well. Perhaps he's their plan for the future?

  • Pat W20/03/2011 at 19:50

Can't disagree with that. The only saving grace is that if Rossi gets fast he will end up catching up if the Honda riders take points off each other.

We should see Rossi getting faster all year. Hopefully the same for Lorenzo.

  • Steven Roy20/03/2011 at 19:52

Dunno, he doesn't score well. Perhaps he's their plan for the future?

I don't think he is getting any better. I wonder if he brings sponsorship

  • RubberGoat20/03/2011 at 19:53

    Apparently Lorenzo said in Spanish:

"I'm more happy than any victory last year. It was the best race of my life"

  • RubberGoat20/03/2011 at 19:54

I wonder what made Stoner so sick last year?

  • RubberGoat20/03/2011 at 19:55

I wonder what made Stoner so sick last year?

    Or 2009 rather

  • Steven Roy20/03/2011 at 19:55

This is Dovisioso's 4th season in MotoGP and third on a factory Honda. One win and 7 podiums does not suggest a great future

  • RubberGoat20/03/2011 at 19:55

I think Pedrosa may be bluffing about the arm because he got beat today?

  • Steven Roy20/03/2011 at 19:56

I wonder what made Stoner so sick last year?

    Or 2009 rather

He missed some of last year as well didn't he?

  • Steven Roy20/03/2011 at 19:56

I bet it got a lot worse the further away Stoner got.

He missed some of last year as well didn't he?

Don't know, I missed most of last year.

  • Pat W20/03/2011 at 19:57

He missed some of last year as well didn't he?

A couple of races I think. My memory is shocking

As you can see in one of the photos behind the facility it's pretty hidden away in disrepair behind fences which is a bit sad. We really wanted to go on the steep bits.

I'll upload them onto flickr tomorrow after work tomorrow so they can be shared away from facebook. I know Lou has photos to edit but her's will be fabulous rather than mine being general phone photos of course :)

It does but it is not called the vomit Comet for nothing. At the bottom of each parabola you get gravity at double the normal rate. So for however long you are up there every minute or so you go from 0 gravity to double gravity and back again.

It does but it is not called the vomit Comet for nothing. At the bottom of each parabola you get gravity at double the normal rate. So for however long you are up there every minute or so you go from 0 gravity to double gravity and back again.

The really fun stuff, are the pull-outs out of the really steep dives (beyond 60 degrees, you can actually black out from the possible 8+ G's you are pulling to level off and start climbing again...., 'course, you really do not want to bounce off the solid ground either...

I am no expert but bouncing off solid ground seems like a bad idea

There was a video of him just wandering around Melbourne and no one seemed to notice him. You should've unleashed amy skills :)

I was so sad! I go to all those places all the time but I wasn't at any of them yesterday :(

I just wish I could run in the mornings really. Running would be nice today, my legs ache when I sit or stand still but when I'm moving they're fine.

You just need to get into the habit of doing it. I used to do it every morning and it just becomes a habit. I am not a morning person but once you get into the habit of getting up early to run it is not a big deal. The first few weeks are a different matter though

I think I'll give it a go one day and see what happens. Maybe this week because otherwise I won't be able to run at all between Wednesday and Sunday because F1 is in my way

I tried it for a bit but I gave up because it wasn't fun turning up to work with a bright red face.

Have got round to seeing the Comic Relief Newport State of Mind, it's odd seeing GLC sing that when they made their own even-Newport-er version :)

  • The Boston Red Scott20/03/2011 at 22:16

HI Steven (and others) - have you seen the video released by NASA of the Solid rocket booster recovery operation? The video is shot from the boats that go and retrieve the spent fuel containers after the shuttle uses up the fuel and drops them away. I love the big floaty thing in the water - looks a bit like 2001's big black rectangle thing.

In other news - I am in contact with appropriate people for meetup events in Boston in a few weeks

Never seen the recovery before. The only thing I know about it is that the left SRB has a big black stripe on it that I didn't spot in all the year the shuttle has been flying until NASA TV mentioned it a few launches ago.

  • Lukeh20/03/2011 at 22:23

    Also, Anneka Rice is Welsh?????

    Mind = blown.

So *why* does it have a stripe while the other one doesn't? So they know which way to stick the shuttle together? Like when a surgeon comes in and chats to you about which body part they're going to play with, and get you to draw on it clearly so they don't make mistakes.

  • Steven Roy20/03/2011 at 22:25

So they can identify which one they have found when they recover them. Don't know why they need to know

  • Steven Roy20/03/2011 at 22:25

    Scott,

Did you see the space rain/seasonal storms link?

thanks for that. I hadn't seen it. I am way too busy these days. I don't think I watched a single day of the shuttle coverage other than the launch and then missed the landing by about two minutes :( oh well. I hope they extend a few more missions. I came close to diverting a trip through Florida in november to see Discovery take off...I would have been waiting a long time :)

  • Steven Roy20/03/2011 at 22:28

Looking at the recovery video it looks like the pointy bit on top of the SRBs separates to let the parachutes deploy and then just drops into the ocean. I guess in years to come divers will recover squished point bits and invent some interesting theories about what they are

There is a private company trying to convince the powers that be to allow them to take over the shuttle fleet and launch two or three missions a year.

I wish the video showed the splashdown of those things but maybe the boats have to stay away in case the wind shifts and you have a rocket land on your boat. wouldn't be good.

I think they have to stay a safe distance. Add in the wind factor and that the SRBs are not guided after they are jettisoned and the target area must be pretty big

  • Steven Roy20/03/2011 at 22:32

You looked at fridges and bought a TV?

We looked at the whole shop. It was quite exciting. Not been in an electrical shop for aaaages. The fridge was amazingness.

Came home and bought a TV on the interwebs.

I sometimes think in the future shops will only display things for people to inspect before they buy on the net.

I thought that was now. I'm not a big shopper but those apps where you scan the barcode and it shows you the price comparison with other stores are really cool.
