After much waiting, it's finally here. The FIFA World Cup 2014, held all across Brazil, begins with the eight groups of four teams that have qualified across the globe over the last few years. Of course the first match of the tournament involves the hosts Brazil going up against Croatia but this is only the start - the group stages go on for two weeks with the top two teams of each group qualifying for the knock out stages over two or three matches being played every day one after the other. With the altitude and temperature of South America to deal with just as much as the squads' talents, we could be in for some upsets and surprises as teams from all over are welcomed by the football-mad country of Brazil. Will they and their youthful squad succeed as hosts? Can Spain breeze through a potentially awkward group on their way to retaining the World Cup? Will England be as dismal as everyone seems to expect? To quote Alan Partridge; the proof is in the pudding, and the pudding, in this case, is football.

  • Steven Roy12/06/2014 at 20:13

Probably the best thing that could happen to Brazil. No complacency now.

I remember Scotland scoring against Brazil early in a world cup game. All the players were celebrating except the captain who just stood shaking his head. "I knew we had just annoyed them" They scored 4

  • Steven Roy12/06/2014 at 20:19

Some of the things Brazil do are unbelievable

  • Lukeh12/06/2014 at 20:19

Awesome control from Thiago Silva then. No final product from Brazil..

  • Mr C12/06/2014 at 21:51

    poor keeping

  • Steven Roy12/06/2014 at 21:51

Nice little sneaky toe-ender inside the post

  • Lukeh12/06/2014 at 21:51

I can't help but think the keeper could've dealt better with all three goals.. although this is speaking as a goalie. I'd be annoyed to let them in.

  • Lukeh12/06/2014 at 21:54

ahh the good old stripey black and white thing

  • Mr C12/06/2014 at 21:55

  • Pat W12/06/2014 at 22:00

Wasn't paying as much attention as I could thanks to LM but seemed a decent game.

Tomorrow I might be here for the games, or I might be at a beer festival..

  • Pat W12/06/2014 at 22:24

Wasn't paying as much attention as I could thanks to LM but seemed a decent game.

    BBC2 MOTD highlights just starting!

  • Elephino13/06/2014 at 11:59

    Chile vs Australia - 11pm

8am here. The only reasonable kick off time for Aus.

  • Pat W13/06/2014 at 17:18

Got home during half time of Mexico v Cameroon, apparently the officials are having another terrible game.

  • Will^13/06/2014 at 19:15

Evening. Spain in white are playing the Dutch in blue - feels very wrong.

  • Mr C13/06/2014 at 19:39

    hullo!

  • Mr C13/06/2014 at 19:41

    i dun missed a goal.

    Hi there (yey, a friend)!

  • Will^13/06/2014 at 19:41

  • Mr C13/06/2014 at 19:42

    Hi there (yey, a friend)!

hey squire. bit of a busy day. but now i have the whole weekend free and to myself.

  • Mr C13/06/2014 at 19:44

    wow!!

  • Will^13/06/2014 at 19:44

hey squire. bit of a busy day. but now i have the whole weekend free and to myself.

Yup, busy days, know about them.

football and cars and beer all around!

I do love Le Mans weekend, and bonus football means I might have to crack out a 2nd screen for my LT to stream everything on.

  • Mr C13/06/2014 at 19:44

    what a header

  • Mr C13/06/2014 at 19:44

AMAZING GOAL what a trajectory !

could've gone so very wrong too. timed to perfection.

  • Will^13/06/2014 at 19:46

Surely that will be one of the top 3 goals in the *whole* tournament, and we're on the 3rd match

  • Mr C13/06/2014 at 19:47

tv director's moonlighting from f1 by the looks of it.

  • Mr C13/06/2014 at 19:50

what happened in the second game?

@simoncrosse: One and a half games in and I'm already playing 'how would World Cup turn out if refs got it right?' in my head.

    https://twitter.com/simoncrosse/status/477509694765162496

  • Will^13/06/2014 at 19:51

what happened in the second game?

No idea, I've only heard that the reffing was mixed.

  • Steven Roy13/06/2014 at 19:52

what happened in the second game?

Mexico had two goals disallowed that should have stood. They won in the end so not as bad as it could have been

  • Mr C13/06/2014 at 19:52

Mexico had two goals disallowed that should have stood. They won in the end so not as bad as it could have been

    ahh, phew.

  • Will^13/06/2014 at 19:52

Hi Steven... shouldn't we expect a goal like immediately?

  • Steven Roy13/06/2014 at 19:52

Just downloaded over 1000 from my camera so wasn't really concentrating on the first half. Pretty stupid since it is Spain v Netherlands

  • Steven Roy13/06/2014 at 19:54

Hi Steven... shouldn't we expect a goal like immediately?

    Which one?

  • Will^13/06/2014 at 19:55

    Which one?

In the Euros, you'd appear, then a goal would be scored... so within the first few minutes of the second half then?

  • Mr C13/06/2014 at 19:56

Just downloaded over 1000 from my camera so wasn't really concentrating on the first half. Pretty stupid since it is Spain v Netherlands

has anyone been volunteered for a guest post? i know lou was debating writing one about the smurf, but i'd be interested in communities stories across the sea kinda thing.

    *pleading look*

  • Steven Roy13/06/2014 at 19:56

In the Euros, you'd appear, then a goal would be scored... so within the first few minutes of the second half then?

Forgot about that. I watched the last game and had all of this one on without commenting. Only counts if it happens after my first comment

  • Will^13/06/2014 at 19:58

Forgot about that. I watched the last game and had all of this one on without commenting. Only counts if it happens after my first comment

Yup. The goal is triggered by the comment :)

  • Steven Roy13/06/2014 at 20:00

has anyone been volunteered for a guest post? i know lou was debating writing one about the smurf, but i'd be interested in communities stories across the sea kinda thing.

Bassano said in Canada that he was going to write one. I may do one as well. Was fascinating to see how the handling of the cars changed on different tyres and from session to session. Would love to do something on that but no idea if I have enough info for that.

Don't want to spoil Bassano's post but it was a fabulous trip. So much fun and a great bunch of people. Pamela has decided that the next sidepodtour is to Melbourne and of course we have Goodwood in a couple of weeks if people are prepared to fight through their abysmal website to buy tickets

  • Mr C13/06/2014 at 20:03

oooh, that'd be amazing, even a short post would be a decent read.

  • Will^13/06/2014 at 20:12

Think Lukeh is responsible for that one

Well true, you turned up over halftime - enough to set off the replays.

  • Steven Roy13/06/2014 at 20:14

Spain are ridiculously calm under huge pressure

  • Lukeh13/06/2014 at 20:17

  • Steven Roy13/06/2014 at 20:20

If you are Brazilian and decide to play for Spain less than a year before the world cup in Brazil you will get booed

  • Lukeh13/06/2014 at 20:21

    That substitution board is obscene

    it's not even subtle

  • Will^13/06/2014 at 20:21

  • Steven Roy13/06/2014 at 20:32

  • Will^13/06/2014 at 20:39

gutted i missed the first 30 mins of this one.

It wasn't THIS good in the first 30, just close football.

  • Lukeh13/06/2014 at 20:45

    Could've scored again. Unbelievable.

  • Lukeh13/06/2014 at 20:46

Spain's defensive line is almost non existant

  • Will^13/06/2014 at 20:46

So we now know how to undo the Spanish defence...

  • Lukeh13/06/2014 at 20:47

    Dutch fans doing the Olés???

  • Lukeh13/06/2014 at 20:51

Also a really enjoyable thing about this match - holland 5-1 up and yet didn't give up going for a 6th goal. Always pressing forward, didn't sit back with comfy lead.

  • Steven Roy13/06/2014 at 20:51

Apparently this is Spain's worst defeat since Scotland beat them 6-3in the Bernabeau in 1963

  • Mr C13/06/2014 at 20:52

that was a brilliant evening of fun.

  • Steven Roy13/06/2014 at 20:52

we had so many problems with BT back when sidepodcast started, but in the past year not a single issue. no broadband provider is what i'd call recommendable, but i i had to chose one, it would be BT.

I'm with BT, no complaints at home.

Actually today we had a problem with our BT Business account at work, one of our remote farms. Stuck on hold for a..ges. Over an hour, including time going to site to test the thing myself. But Openreach turned up an hour later! I am convinced that despite protestations it is all separate these days, it is still better to have BT reporting to BT when you get a problem.

There players are just getting older and other teams know their tactics. Netherlands have always played 4-3-3 since the early 70s. It is non-negotiable but they played 5-3-2 for this game and the tactical change worked

Even more unexpected than when they beat Scotland in a world cup

If they convert their chances, possible dark horses. have a nice flowing style of play. Honduras are playing a bit rugged

  • Lukeh15/06/2014 at 19:34

halfway line effort from figeruoa. Not even close :0

  • Lukeh15/06/2014 at 19:41

France almost scored with a Honduras defender with a twisted knee on the floor in the box..

  • Lukeh15/06/2014 at 19:44

Not surprised Honduras had a man sent off the way they've been playing..

  • Will^15/06/2014 at 19:44

Cynical challenge - played the man and never went for the ball

  • Lukeh15/06/2014 at 19:44

Enjoying being out in Brazil a little too much perhaps

  • Lukeh15/06/2014 at 20:26

    Honduras had a shot!

  • Will^15/06/2014 at 20:28

Those Honduras players better be careful - lie on the ground on their backs for too long, and any mini-helicopter/drone nearby will come and try to land on their chest.

  • Will^15/06/2014 at 20:37

No Mr/Mrs C around - it feels weird using their "living room" without them being here to make sure we don't make a mess.

    amazing!

Honduras have been pretty poor tonight. Such an easy win for France.

Hope Lineker pokes fun at the terrible commentary!

  • Lukeh15/06/2014 at 21:42

Might watch the Argentina match in bed...

  • Pat W15/06/2014 at 21:45

Good luck Bosnia. I mean Argentina will obviously beat them but they must have a chance against Iran and Nigeria..

  • Lukeh15/06/2014 at 21:46

I forgot Dzeko is bosnian. Begovic is a good keeper too.

    Aw

  • Pat W16/06/2014 at 11:09

Was starting to doze on the sofa but caught most of the rest of the last game. Shame about the OG, Bosnia played well after that, even scoring (properly this time). Then someone woke up Argentina.. I know little of Nigeria but I reckon Bosnia will make it out of the group.

  • Pat W16/06/2014 at 11:23

    Today:

    5pm Group G - Germany vs Portugal

    8pm Group F - Iran vs Nigeria

    11pm Group G - Ghana vs USA

(A Group F first game should not be after a Group G first game, it messes with the order of things..)

  • Lukeh16/06/2014 at 16:18

I'm missing the first match due to, well, playing football for work. Not quite the world cup!

  • Pat W16/06/2014 at 16:32

    31 minutes in. 2-0 Germany.

    Also, Merkel is in attendance.

  • Pat W16/06/2014 at 16:38

    What..

Pepe gets tackled by Mueller, who gets hit and makes a big display of rolling around clutching his head even though he was barely touched, Pepe gets angry goes up to him and headbutts him - red card.

  • Pat W16/06/2014 at 17:00

Wow I actually agree with Adrian Chiles about something. He's really angry about Mueller rolling about play acting and the pundits opposite him disagree saying its part of the game! Rubbish, get rid of it.

Ought to be a walkover with Portugal down to 10, but who knows..!

Not sure I'll bother with the middle one but the third, Ghana v USA might be interesting.

  • Mr C16/06/2014 at 17:10

Ought to be a walkover with Portugal down to 10, but who knows..!

would be one hell of a comeback :)

    should've got that in!

great opportunity, tripped over each other.

  • Mr C16/06/2014 at 17:19

  • Pat W16/06/2014 at 17:53

    Me too.

Interesting to see the growth in the US of people following the game. Been online since '99 or so and the difference to now is huge, even since joining Twitter in '09, following a load of IndyCar fans, more and more people talk about it and follow the national team (even if only at Cup time). And some watch the Premier League.

Definitely more of an interest now and there's a fair few big stars in the US albeit in the latter stages of their career but it all helps establish the sport there at least. Agreed on the social media front too, have seen a lot of US and Canadian guys talking football a lot more over the last few years

  • Lukeh16/06/2014 at 22:47

    Silly tackle from Muntari...

  • Lukeh16/06/2014 at 22:50

  • Pat W16/06/2014 at 22:52

Bad shot.. They had some good opportunities. Could've been a draw by now, even before that chance.

  • Pat W16/06/2014 at 22:53

    Both teams could've got more.

Says a lot that this half seemed to go by really quickly.

  • Pat W17/06/2014 at 00:06

I'm left hoping the US pulls a shock result against Portugal. Hell even a draw.

  • Lukeh17/06/2014 at 00:10

Big win for USA that. Time for bed too definitely, phew

  • Pat W17/06/2014 at 00:12

    Group A

    Brazil vs Mexico - 8pm

  • Lukeh17/06/2014 at 16:08

All settled down for the Belgium match. I'd expect an easy win for Belgium considering some of the players they have.

  • Lukeh17/06/2014 at 19:08

  • Lukeh17/06/2014 at 19:32

I can't get over that. How is this man a professional commentator?

  • Will^17/06/2014 at 19:33

I think we need to see every instance of GLT, because that establishes its accuracy and reliability, which might go to silence the doubters

  • Lukeh17/06/2014 at 19:34

I think we need to see every instance of GLT, because that establishes its accuracy and reliability, which might go to silence the doubters

I think we can reduce the plural to doubter, the numpty still talking on TV :)

  • Mr C17/06/2014 at 19:35

I think we can reduce the plural to doubter, the numpty still talking on TV :)

itv people on the sofa post-match were doubting it too.

all of them were over 50 though, for what that's worth.

  • Will^17/06/2014 at 19:36

I think we can reduce the plural to doubter, the numpty still talking on TV :)

or just the more he sees it, the more chances he has to realise how it works.

  • Lukeh17/06/2014 at 19:36

itv people on the sofa post-match were doubting it too.

gary lineker did question if it went over the line, immediately after it was shown going over the line. This is their profession, shocking!

It is there to tell them it did go over the line, no interpretation required. #Doh

  • Lukeh17/06/2014 at 19:41

  • Lukeh17/06/2014 at 19:47

    Surprised it's still 0-0

  • Lukeh17/06/2014 at 19:58

The whole scapegoat attitude towards Rooney has been pretty awful from the media. He didn't have a good game but people need to look past it and move on.

  • Will^17/06/2014 at 19:58

He maybe didn't play his best because he was being played out of position... does Rooney choose the teams?

  • Lukeh17/06/2014 at 19:59

He maybe didn't play his best because he was being played out of position... does Rooney choose the teams?

Apparently everyone else chooses the team!

Weirdly it has already been 4 months. It still doesn't feel real.. :) There has been a lot of waiting though, and I'm quite stressed at the moment because the contract signing is very overdue and I have to be out of my flat by the 30th..

We almost had that with ours. Hopefully completion day comes nice and smoothly before then though.

    That deflection could've been dangerous

  • Lukeh17/06/2014 at 20:12

I have a great mental image of Jonathan Pearce, on a late Rio evening, sitting in the lobby of his hotel staring out at the horizon with a whiskey, muttering away to himself "But it said both goal and no goal..."

  • Will^17/06/2014 at 20:13

I can see him in a restaurant, eating lunch trying to recreate the goal with the salt and pepper and a pea - trying to work out exactly what the replay meant.

  • Lukeh17/06/2014 at 20:14

    Mexico are really threatening now"

  • Lukeh17/06/2014 at 20:50

Well I've no idea how that ended 0-0

  • Will^17/06/2014 at 20:50

A good result for both teams

  • Mr C17/06/2014 at 20:51

    enjoyed that, must run y'all.

  • Will^17/06/2014 at 20:51

like an f1 race we need 5 more laps minutes

Speaking of fan votes - that should be one: "Do we need to extend the race by 5 laps?" The drivers would find out when they came to take the checkered flag, then if >50% wanted an extension, then they'd have to drive for just a little longer :D

  • Lukeh17/06/2014 at 20:52

That was so well done by Cahill. Goal of the tournament so far easily.

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 17:04

Van Persie out for Spain's match against Chile for a yellow, 2nd in 2 games. Could've easily been a red...

Cracking strike from Van Persie. 2-2

What a great game this is!

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 17:25

Why didn't they just shoot?! Through on goal against the keeper and the australian striker hit it across the goal

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 17:25

3-2!!! Just as Australia should score, Netherlands do!

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 17:31

Great save from the Australia keeper again. So much attacking football!

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 17:34

That was such a bad dive :)

  • Mr C18/06/2014 at 17:48

tuned in for extra time. doh.

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 17:48

tuned in for extra time. doh.

    3 minutes of awesomeness ;)

    good save

  • Pat W18/06/2014 at 18:01

  • Mr C18/06/2014 at 18:02

bob mortimer is on baker and kelly :)

Ooh great I'll put it on, ta

  • Will^18/06/2014 at 18:52

Goooood evening. I'm sensing an edgy, nervy game.

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 18:55

    Chile have a nice anthem

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 19:01

    Almost a goal for chile!!

  • Will^18/06/2014 at 19:03

Spain have to win to feel they are in with a chance of going through.

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 19:09

Dangerous stuff from Chile at the back..

  • Pat W18/06/2014 at 19:12

Long busy day... Just had to let my Mum's dog out (after I forgot it was Wednesday.. else I've had done it when out after work.).

Now finally settling in to watch something!

  • Will^18/06/2014 at 19:14

    Poor free kick

  • Will^18/06/2014 at 19:15

    Scrabbling... no goal

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 19:19

    OH MY

  • Will^18/06/2014 at 19:19

    Goooooal Chile

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 19:20

    I love this world cup.

  • Will^18/06/2014 at 19:20

    Brilliant move, 3 excellent passes!

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 19:27

    Thought that was in!

  • Will^18/06/2014 at 19:27

Soo close from Spain - lots of urgency now.

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 19:41

    xabi alonso's having a mare

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 19:43

    ohhhh myyyyyy god!

  • Pat W18/06/2014 at 19:43

    Two!

  • Pat W18/06/2014 at 19:44

    Wow that was quick thinking

  • Pat W18/06/2014 at 19:44

    Wow that was quick thinking

And yet it looks so calm

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 19:44

There's another reason why Mourinho dropped Casillas at real...

  • Will^18/06/2014 at 19:45

Goal, goal, Goooooal!! (bit slow I know)

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 19:47

    Great goalkeeping

  • Mr C18/06/2014 at 19:48

    spain?

    SPAIN?!

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 19:48

    SPAIN?!

The rain in spains falls mainly on their reign...

  • Mr C18/06/2014 at 19:48

    spain are the new france.

  • Mr C18/06/2014 at 19:49

too early to call this the best world cup ever?

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 19:50

too early to call this the best world cup ever?

Definitely the best since 1998 which was a great WC

  • Mr C18/06/2014 at 19:51

Definitely the best since 1998 which was a great WC

    can't argue with that.

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 19:53

Absolutely no one on Spain reacted to the palming out from Casillas

  • Mr C18/06/2014 at 19:53

did they assume he caught it? why didn't he catch it?

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 19:54

did they assume he caught it? why didn't he catch it?

For a keeper of his experience and success, no idea. I'd be furious if it were me doing that. Mourinho dropped him 2 seasons ago for Madrid and everyone questioned him, and then it happened again this season under Ancelotti too. Seems to me he's really short on confidence.

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 19:57

It's easy to understand how the English football team get overanalyzed at major tournaments in the British media..

  • Mr C18/06/2014 at 19:58

It's easy to understand how the English football team get overanalyzed at major tournaments in the British media..

football doesn't seem to provide enough points of interest to fill the airtime.

or maybe there's too much airtime.

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 19:58

or maybe there's too much airtime.

quick, tell the average football fan that they're poor and how they can get a bus to a match!

  • Will^18/06/2014 at 20:02

Ohh, no, ENG on itv tomorrow

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 20:03

Xabi Alonso coming off. He has a surprisingly poor first half.

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 20:05

The reigning champions went out in the first round in 2002 (France) and in 2010 too (Italy)

  • Mr C18/06/2014 at 20:11

good position for a free kick.

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 20:12

strange save but WHAT A MISS

  • Mr C18/06/2014 at 20:12

    watch a missed chance.

    spain don't want the goal.

  • Will^18/06/2014 at 20:16

Busquets' scoring record for Spain: played 67, goals 0.

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 20:20

    Torres to save the day?

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 20:21

So many players forward for Chile!

  • Will^18/06/2014 at 20:22

    Torres to save the day?

He now has his chance to redefine this mediocre part of his career.

  • Mr C18/06/2014 at 20:27

first game this cup that i've enjoyed the commentary. dunno who they are, but it seems to work.

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 20:27

    so close to being 3!

  • Mr C18/06/2014 at 20:27

    coulda been 3-0

  • Will^18/06/2014 at 20:27

How did that not go in?!

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 20:27

first game this cup that i've enjoyed the commentary. dunno who they are, but it seems to work.

the 2nd commentator sounds like jimmy tarbuck :)

  • Mr C18/06/2014 at 20:27

    he does :)

  • Will^18/06/2014 at 20:28

    Shoulda coulda been 3-0

  • Mr C18/06/2014 at 20:28

    truth

  • Will^18/06/2014 at 20:28

Despite Spain's changes, Chile still look the most likely to score.

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 20:28

when in doubt, blast it away

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 20:29

again, just so much pace and attack from chile

  • Will^18/06/2014 at 20:29

Spain have sacrificed defence for attack

  • Will^18/06/2014 at 20:30

Still 20 minutes for Spain to get something together...

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 20:34

    Spain have no chance.

  • Will^18/06/2014 at 20:34

Spain lucky? Could've been a penalty.

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 20:34

Blimey, that was terrible from Chile

  • Will^18/06/2014 at 20:35

    No chance at a penalty

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 20:38

    Too many passes.

  • Mr C18/06/2014 at 20:39

no one brave enough to shoot and risk missing

  • Will^18/06/2014 at 20:39

That's more like it - why has it taken them 80 minutes rather than 8 to string sa few passes together

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 20:39

    Thought that was in

  • Mr C18/06/2014 at 20:42

he fell over his own ball

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 20:43

I'll be disappointed if there's not a Chile Con Carnival in Brazil headline tomorrow

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 20:43

    great save!

  • Will^18/06/2014 at 20:43

I'll be disappointed if there's not a Chile Con Carnival in Brazil headline tomorrow

    Espan-lol

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 20:44

    Espan-lol

    Red Hot Chile Pressure

  • Mr C18/06/2014 at 20:45

    :) :) :)

  • Will^18/06/2014 at 20:46

    Spanish hot streak becomes Chile.

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 20:47

    Another cracking save

  • Will^18/06/2014 at 20:47

Chilean keeper has been faultless so far

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 20:49

I think it's fair to say the golden era of spanish football is about to come to an end if nothing major happens...

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 20:49

    6 mins!!!

  • Pat W18/06/2014 at 20:50

    6 mins!!!

Don't think I've seen injury time that long before!

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 20:51

    It's all a bit tense!

  • Pat W18/06/2014 at 20:51

    It's all a bit tense!

    They're getting desperate

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 20:52

I think it a bit mental that one of the best players tonight for Chile, Gary Medel, plays for Cardiff who were relegated this year. He's kept Iniesta under wraps all night. Iniesta of Barcelona!

  • Will^18/06/2014 at 20:52

    Only 3 more left.

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 20:53

The reign of Spain is going home on the plane...

  • Will^18/06/2014 at 20:54

The reign of Spain is definitely on the wane...

  • Mr C18/06/2014 at 20:55

    go pro's on sticks.

    need.

  • Mr C18/06/2014 at 20:55

    great game

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 20:55

    thats it!!!

    Un.be.lievable.

  • Pat W18/06/2014 at 20:55

    Unbelievable.

  • Mr C18/06/2014 at 20:56

genius ipad scrawling, need a shot of that too :)

  • Will^18/06/2014 at 20:56

    They gone!

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 20:56

who would've thunk the first team to be eliminated would be the champions who have dominated international football for 6 years?

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 21:02

Woah, chile fans broke down the press centre?!

  • Will^18/06/2014 at 21:03

Woah, chile fans broke down the press centre?!

Some temporary walls folded worse than the Spanish defence.

  • Mr C18/06/2014 at 21:03

    hehe

it's been fun chaps. catch you again soon.

  • Will^18/06/2014 at 21:06

Cameroon - Croatia @ 2300 although I doubt I'll end up watching much of it.

  • Lukeh18/06/2014 at 21:06

Cameroon - Croatia @ 2300 although I doubt I'll end up watching much of it.

Think I might have an early one tonight as I'm knackered. Been a stressful week thus far!

  • Will^18/06/2014 at 22:10

    Croatia are ahead

  • Christine19/06/2014 at 13:07

So, question. Is the awesome Diego playing? And if so, how can I cope with England v. Uruguay?

  • Christine19/06/2014 at 14:08

Also, hey, good time for a plug: http://smarterthanyouraverage.wordpress.com/2010/07/07/ode-to-forlan/

  • Lukeh19/06/2014 at 16:14

    Hey hey.

  • Lukeh19/06/2014 at 16:15

So, question. Is the awesome Diego playing? And if so, how can I cope with England v. Uruguay?

I don't think diego will play tonight as Suarez is fit again. But maybe they will play Forlan and Suarez!

  • Lukeh19/06/2014 at 16:23

Mark Lawrenson has woken on the sad side of the bed again

  • Lukeh19/06/2014 at 16:23

    Hey it's Howard Webb refereeing!

  • Christine19/06/2014 at 16:24

I don't think diego will play tonight as Suarez is fit again. But maybe they will play Forlan and Suarez!

But he is in the team? Way cool! I thought he'd be too old :)

  • Lukeh19/06/2014 at 16:24

But he is in the team? Way cool! I thought he'd be too old :)

He's 35 and playing in Japan now :)

He played the first match for Uruguay though!

  • Lukeh19/06/2014 at 16:29

    Columbia shoukd've scored!

  • Christine19/06/2014 at 16:35

He's 35 and playing in Japan now :)

Those well known Japanese tournaments :)

  • Lukeh19/06/2014 at 17:01

    Forlan isn't starting

    #sorrychristine

  • Christine19/06/2014 at 17:10

    Rats.

  • Lukeh19/06/2014 at 17:24

    Columbia score!

  • Lukeh19/06/2014 at 17:33

This match suddenly came to life!

  • Lukeh19/06/2014 at 17:53

    Tense ending to this match!

  • Lukeh19/06/2014 at 17:55

Wow, surprised to see Ivory Coast lose. Columbia go through as long as Japan lose later

  • Lukeh19/06/2014 at 18:07

I really can't see Suarez lasting longer than half time tonight. 28 days after a knee operation playing is just not going to happen for 90 mins

  • Will^19/06/2014 at 18:50

Evening all. Only average confidence tonight.

  • Mr C19/06/2014 at 18:52

    yolo!

  • Lukeh19/06/2014 at 18:53

Almost time. I am a bit nervous, clearly my £2 sweepstake is worth it"

  • Will^19/06/2014 at 18:53

    yolo!

I feel like we've just been having a conversation - An Aside With Joe will do that to you ;)

  • Pat W19/06/2014 at 18:56

    Evening.

Uruguay's anthem is trying to be Italy's anthem.

  • Lukeh19/06/2014 at 18:56

do we reckon england can do it?

    I say yes

  • Mr C19/06/2014 at 18:56

I feel like we've just been having a conversation - An Aside With Joe will do that to you ;)

  • Lukeh19/06/2014 at 18:57

    gwlaaaadd

    gwwllaaad

    ...wait, sorry, wrong one

  • Mr C19/06/2014 at 18:58

do we reckon england can do it?

based on the first game, yeah.

"do what you did there, but better"

  • Lukeh19/06/2014 at 18:58

"do what you did there, but better"

    good coaching :)

  • Pat W19/06/2014 at 18:59

do we reckon england can do it?

Err. Maybe. I think so but they'll drag it out.

  • Lukeh19/06/2014 at 19:02

    keeper dropped it!

  • Lukeh19/06/2014 at 19:04

    Blimey that was dangerous...

  • Will^19/06/2014 at 19:07

Have ENG forgotten their studs today?

  • Mr C19/06/2014 at 19:07

Have ENG forgotten their studs today?

not used to a decent pitch :)

  • Will^19/06/2014 at 19:08

not used to a decent pitch :)

    far too smooth

  • Lukeh19/06/2014 at 19:08

  • Lukeh19/06/2014 at 19:09

  • Lukeh19/06/2014 at 19:28

I like that, just pushing his defender down :)

  • Mr C19/06/2014 at 19:28

    foul!

  • Lukeh19/06/2014 at 19:28

    second yellow?!

  • Lukeh19/06/2014 at 19:28

    that should be off.

    awful.

  • Will^19/06/2014 at 19:28

    Should be off by now

  • Pat W19/06/2014 at 19:28

Are you getting to see much of this World Cup?

  • Christine19/06/2014 at 20:05

Are you getting to see much of this World Cup?

Nope, so far it's been about ten minutes of the first Japan match and that's it. Keeping an eye on what's going on though.

  • Lukeh19/06/2014 at 20:05

    Bloody hell!

  • Mr C19/06/2014 at 20:05

  • Lukeh19/06/2014 at 20:06

Ouch - but if the keeper is going to come out like that...

  • Lukeh19/06/2014 at 20:11

Ouch - but if the keeper is going to come out like that...

Welbeck has to go for the ball

  • Will^19/06/2014 at 20:12

Welbeck has to go for the ball

Exactly, and if you demobilise the keeper slightly in the process...

  • Christine19/06/2014 at 20:35

No Forlan tonight unfortunately, Uruguay have made their last sub

  • Lukeh19/06/2014 at 20:38

    Mr Uruguay looks miserable

  • Lukeh19/06/2014 at 20:39

So many times Glen Johnson has just left balls to run onto Luis Suarez, which you really can't do for someone that good

  • Will^19/06/2014 at 20:40

    WHAT HAPPENED THERE?!?!?!?!

  • Mr C19/06/2014 at 20:40

    too easy

  • Lukeh19/06/2014 at 20:40

and that is why you don't let him run!

  • Mr C19/06/2014 at 20:40

So many times Glen Johnson has just left balls to run onto Luis Suarez, which you really can't do for someone that good

  • Steven Roy19/06/2014 at 20:46

So many times Glen Johnson has just left balls to run onto Luis Suarez, which you really can't do for someone that good

He was by a long way England's worst player in the last world cup. No idea why he gets played at this level

  • Lukeh19/06/2014 at 20:46

So, it's at this point I start cheering for France, right?

Yes! Although their very good Franck (ribery) isn't at the world cup

    Straight through the wall!

    SUI 1-5 FRA

  • Will^20/06/2014 at 20:40

Still 9 mins left - only need 2 more goals to bring the tournament back up to an average of 3 goals per game.

  • Pat W20/06/2014 at 20:45

    Wow another for SUI.

I'd actually started watching something else on PC at the same time because I thought it was all over.

  • Pat W20/06/2014 at 20:50

Still 9 mins left - only need 2 more goals to bring the tournament back up to an average of 3 goals per game.

That's a hell of a number for so many games. Even to be close to it.

  • Pat W20/06/2014 at 20:51

Scored a 6th right on the whistle! He thinks he got it, ref had already blown... no goal.

  • Christine21/06/2014 at 16:31

Big sports week coming up! Austria this weekend, Wimbledon, the footballs... and Glastonbury. Which isn't sport, but is probably quite energetic if you're there.

    Woo! Summer fun!

Dunno how there will be time to ourselves next week. I genuinely think there's always going to be something on!

  • Lukeh21/06/2014 at 17:08

This match is somehow still 0-0!

  • Lukeh21/06/2014 at 17:10

What's the football schedule like, hectic or does it start slowing down yet?

  • Lukeh21/06/2014 at 17:17

What's the football schedule like, hectic or does it start slowing down yet?

It'll calm down after the group stages. Once it gets to knockout stages (from next Saturday onwards) I'm sure it's 1 or 2 matches a day for a few days, then a days break, then the same for the next round, then a days break, and so on

  • Lukeh21/06/2014 at 17:17

    again Messi should've scored!

  • Lukeh21/06/2014 at 17:25

I can seriously see Iran getting something from this match

  • Lukeh21/06/2014 at 17:25

    WHAT A SAVE!

Dejegah with a great header, keeper just turns it over. Iran getting closer and closer!

  • Christine21/06/2014 at 17:31

Ah ha, so I still have some time to get some match viewing in then. Sounds like I missed most of the madness though.

  • Lukeh21/06/2014 at 17:32

Still a week of lots of games every day :)

Argentina just hit the side netting. This is a close match

  • Lukeh21/06/2014 at 17:44

    Iran were through on goal!!

  • Mr C21/06/2014 at 17:49

Still a week of lots of games every day :)

no time to watch today, but will surely make up for it in the week :)

  • Lukeh21/06/2014 at 17:49

    OH MY WORD

  • Lukeh21/06/2014 at 17:49

Argentina just scored in the 91st minute with a lionel messi WONDERGOAL

  • Lukeh21/06/2014 at 17:53

Poor Iran. Played utterly excellent for 90 minutes and one second for Messi makes a difference.

  • Lukeh21/06/2014 at 18:40

Germany vs Ghana in 20 minutes

  • Pat W21/06/2014 at 18:45

Ah ha, so I still have some time to get some match viewing in then. Sounds like I missed most of the madness though.

From tomorrow there are two sets of two simultaneous games per day until the groups are finished up, all the drama of who qualifies, it'll be fun.. although not fun missing the first half of the 5pm kickoff games still at work / travelling home!

  • Pat W21/06/2014 at 20:12

I struggled to pay attention to the Germany game but it just got better, two goals in a few minutes. 1-1

  • Lukeh21/06/2014 at 20:13

  • Pat W21/06/2014 at 20:20

    Ohh Ghana. 2-1 against GER!

    Nice celebration too :)

  • Lukeh21/06/2014 at 20:20

    Ghana lead!

  • Lukeh21/06/2014 at 20:24

    Greedy football!

  • Lukeh21/06/2014 at 20:25

Oh my word that could've been 3

  • Lukeh21/06/2014 at 20:25

    Germany's defence has utterly collapsed

  • Lukeh21/06/2014 at 20:28

2-2! Klose comes on and scores immediatedly

  • Pat W21/06/2014 at 20:31

I'm torn. I want Ghana to do well, but I also want USA to make the next round and Germany winning this game makes that easier.

  • Pat W21/06/2014 at 20:31

I'm torn. I want Ghana to do well, but I also want USA to make the next round and Germany winning this game makes that easier.

In saying that, USA progressing and England not, may be hard to live down. :)

  • Lukeh21/06/2014 at 20:41

    That offside was very close

  • Lukeh21/06/2014 at 20:42

    That offside was very close

    then Muller almost scores!

Such a different 2nd half to the 1st

  • Pat W21/06/2014 at 20:42

Such a different 2nd half to the 1st

    This is much more fun.

  • Lukeh21/06/2014 at 20:44

    Great defending again from Ghana

  • Lukeh21/06/2014 at 20:47

    That was weird from Neuer

  • Lukeh21/06/2014 at 20:49

How did they mess that counter attack up?!

  • Pat W21/06/2014 at 20:49

    Wasted, offside

  • Lukeh21/06/2014 at 20:49

    Poor stuff from Joachim Lowe

  • Lukeh21/06/2014 at 20:52

    Blimey, ended with blood..

  • Pat W21/06/2014 at 20:52

Wow. Never would've thought Ghana would hold Germany to a draw.

  • Pat W21/06/2014 at 20:52

    Blimey, ended with blood..

    Ouch

  • Will^21/06/2014 at 20:56

Interesting result, the next match could blow the group wide open.

  • Pat W21/06/2014 at 20:57

Turns out Group G is a lot of fun! Pre-WC I thought it would be an easy Germany/Portugal progression, but now..

    Predictions?

USA v Portugal should be a Portugal win but I could see USA getting a draw out of it.

Ghana could beat Portugal. Germany will (should) beat USA.

Germany to win the group but any one of the others could go through with them! USA has points advantage but could lose next two games..

  • Pat W21/06/2014 at 20:58

Worth a look at the group points and schedules, already updated.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/world-cup/2014/schedule/group-stage

  • Lukeh21/06/2014 at 21:00

Turns out Group G is a lot of fun! Pre-WC I thought it would be an easy Germany/Portugal progression, but now..

I can see Germany and USA going through. Agreed though in it being a really good group, on their day they're all 4 very solid teams but Portugal look weak at this WC and I think USA may come through against them.

  • Lukeh21/06/2014 at 21:00

Although even now I've said that I'm doubting myself as Ghana have so many top tier european-based players

  • Lukeh21/06/2014 at 21:01

didn't realise Klose is the joint all time world cup goalscorer, woah

  • Pat W21/06/2014 at 21:08

I can see Germany and USA going through. Agreed though in it being a really good group, on their day they're all 4 very solid teams but Portugal look weak at this WC and I think USA may come through against them.

USA v Portugal should be really good, worth staying up for I reckon.

Just looked at the clock, gone 10pm already!

  • Lukeh21/06/2014 at 21:12

With the exception of maybe 3 matches I think pretty much every match at this world cup has been genuinely quite open between both teams. Which is quite staggering realy.

I never thought I'd be looking forward to Nigera vs Bosnia & Herzegovina, and yet..

  • Lukeh21/06/2014 at 21:16

I never thought I'd be looking forward to Nigera vs Bosnia & Herzegovina, and yet..

    Exactly! It's bizarre :)

  • Pat W21/06/2014 at 21:17

Actually I thought with Spain out the later rounds might be flat, but then France stepped up their game, lots of South American teams looking good.. This tournament isn't a foregone conclusion.

  • Lukeh21/06/2014 at 21:19

I thought Germany would up the game to another gear tonight in all honesty but they didn't. So there's still plenty to keep an eye out for.

  • Pat W21/06/2014 at 21:33

I'm sure they will at some point.

  • Lukeh21/06/2014 at 22:17

This hasn;t been a bad match but I think the week I've had has finally caught up with me. Gonna give this one a miss for some sleep I think

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 16:06

Settled down now for Russia. Can't see them losing this one (surely?!)

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 16:07

Settled down now for Russia. Can't see them losing this one (surely?!)

For some reason I thought they were playing Belarus, not Belgium. I may have to take my statement back :)

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 16:17

have the game on too. doing other stuff, but it's on in the background.

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 16:22

Mertens seems like a really good player. One I expect to hear more in the future..

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 16:22

someone stole the remote and replaced football with baseball.

I think I have had way too much influence on Christine somehow. First the space stuff and now baseball. Can't wait for the NFL season to start

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 16:26

Someone's caught the baseball bug huh? ;)

she'll be moaning she hasn't seen any world cup and it'll all be her fault.

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 16:32

didn't realise vertonghen went off in the warmup. He's had a terrible time recently..

  • Will^22/06/2014 at 19:58

ITV just mentioned the 2012 World Cup.

Good effort, looks like scored an own goal there.

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 20:07

That goal was coming, great pressure from South Korea! 3-1

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 20:09

    Could've been 3-2!

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 20:16

South Korea almost scored a 40 years thundebolt, what a save! This match has come to life amazingly

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 20:18

And now off the line for south korea.

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 20:19

    4-1! Out of nowhere!

    What a match!

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 20:29

Evening. Looking forward to this game. :)

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 21:57

Interested to see Ronaldo starting. Lot of talk this week about his knee...

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 22:05

    defenders just looked at it

  • Pat W22/06/2014 at 22:05

hey all. have beer, have football.

Beer is one thing I lack.

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 22:09

Jurgen's top is straight to the point

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 22:11

Sneaky tactic by portugal tonight, they have played other players who aren't called Ronaldo

  • Will^22/06/2014 at 22:12

    PortuGOAL already?!

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 22:12

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 22:16

good to see usa attacking already!

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 22:17

football needs fanboost. usa deserve a little help for caring about the sport now.

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 22:19

maybe a twelfth player for 10 minutes at the end for the country with the most tweets.

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 22:19

The USA are dominating Poortugal in this phase

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 22:27

    They're looking dangerous!

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 22:27

looked like a decent chance for usa

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 22:28

    scuffed it and still close..

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 22:28

damn it that had the right contact

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 22:31

    unlucky!

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 22:31

there has to be a usa goal coming.

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 22:31

america are really good at football!

  • Pat W22/06/2014 at 22:31

there has to be a usa goal coming.

    Got to be

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 22:32

america are better at football than we are.

  • Will^22/06/2014 at 22:32

    That was some powerful shot

  • Will^22/06/2014 at 22:32

america are better at football than we are.

    not hard ;)

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 22:32

america are better at football than we are.

I agree, but then i come from a country that hasn't qualified since the 50's :)

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 22:32

    :)

  • Pat W22/06/2014 at 22:34

    I found cider

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 22:34

    yay!

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 22:35

Portugal have so many men back and yet they're allowing the us to come forward. Brave tactics..

  • Pat W22/06/2014 at 22:35

I agree, but then i come from a country that hasn't qualified since the 50's :)

If Uruguay can do it with similar size population.. You need to find a Welsh Suarez.

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 22:36

If Uruguay can do it with similar size population.. You need to find a Welsh Suarez.

Gareth Bale is the best we can do!

  • Will^22/06/2014 at 22:37

The USA do seem to love a good dink

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 22:38

It always amazed me that wales never qualified for a tournament in the 90's. This was a team with Gary Speed, Ian Rush, John hartson, Mark Pembrdge, Dean Saunders, Neville Southall, a young Ryan Giggs and Craig Bellamy... it was a very, very good team on paper.

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 22:39

    water break!

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 22:39

    err, what's going on?

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 22:39

    err, what's going on?

they're allowed sanction water breaks to fight the humidity and heat in the 1st and 2nd half if the temperature is at the right level to allow it

  • Pat W22/06/2014 at 22:39

I've never seen that before. Shouldn't they stop the clock?

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 22:40

they're allowed sanction water breaks to fight the humidity and heat in the 1st and 2nd half if the temperature is at the right level to allow it

    wow,

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 22:40

    new to me totally

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 22:40

I've never seen that before. Shouldn't they stop the clock?

They'll add it to stoppage time at the end of the half

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 22:40

I think anyways, it was all a bit odd~!

  • Pat W22/06/2014 at 22:40

It always amazed me that wales never qualified for a tournament in the 90's. This was a team with Gary Speed, Ian Rush, John hartson, Mark Pembrdge, Dean Saunders, Neville Southall, a young Ryan Giggs and Craig Bellamy... it was a very, very good team on paper.

I didn't know Rush was Welsh.

That seems like a decent team in fairness.

  • Pat W22/06/2014 at 22:41

They'll add it to stoppage time at the end of the half

There are only 5 minutes left anyway, surely they can hold on

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 22:41

That seems like a decent team in fairness.

he was coming to the end of his career when most were coming in but still a crossover period at some point

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 22:41

    good save!

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 22:41

    SAVE!

  • Pat W22/06/2014 at 22:42

Mind you I played golf when it was very humid yesterday, tell you what it was bloody tiring

  • Pat W22/06/2014 at 22:42

I thought that was going to be a goal!

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 22:42

We do 5 a side football on Mondays for 40 mins and even in that, in the recent weather, it's been utterly draining

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 22:42

    miles over

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 22:43

    rrrrrubbish

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 22:44

    WOWOWWO

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 22:44

From a crap save to a MEGA save!

  • Pat W22/06/2014 at 22:44

    Woah!

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 22:44

deflected into the post, how did the keeper get back for that

  • Pat W22/06/2014 at 22:44

Those should both have been goals!

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 22:47

    great half

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 22:47

more to come in the 2nd!

  • Pat W22/06/2014 at 22:49

Enjoyed it, hope 2nd half is as good

  • Pat W22/06/2014 at 22:49

    Even Lawro sounded interested

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 22:59

I'm glad we're talking England again

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 23:02

I don't understand why people are still talking about the future of England.

Expectations were low coming into the tournament with a young inexperienced team mixed with a few outgoing players.

    Expectations were met.

Roy has made progress as the team played well and can develop with the younger players going forward.

There we go, saved BBC and ITV wasted minutes at every single match for them!

  • Pat W22/06/2014 at 23:02

I'm glad we're talking England again

As tedious as it is inevitable. Maybe there could be a special Football Show for it, in which they could also put all the stuff that's on BBC News, because it isn't news.

  • Pat W22/06/2014 at 23:05

Expectations were low coming into the tournament with a young inexperienced team mixed with a few outgoing players.

I assumed it was expected to at least get to the knockout stage, but not much further. Turned out to be a tough group as well.

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 23:06

I assumed it was expected to at least get to the knockout stage, but not much further. Turned out to be a tough group as well.

I think a lot of people are underestimating teams in their groups at this tournament. Which is making it even better for us as viewers!

  • Pat W22/06/2014 at 23:06

    2nd half, Portugal pushing already

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 23:06

    USA on the counter :)

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 23:07

USA need to make the most of Fabian Johnson on those wings like that as Portugal have zero pace at back

  • Pat W22/06/2014 at 23:08

I think a lot of people are underestimating teams in their groups at this tournament. Which is making it even better for us as viewers!

    Absolutely.

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 23:10

how did they mess that up?!

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 23:10

As tedious as it is inevitable. Maybe there could be a special Football Show for it, in which they could also put all the stuff that's on BBC News, because it isn't news.

the thing i don't get is why people in england care so much about england going out. this is really good football. some of the best i've maybe ever seen. dropping the bad teams should equal even better football. no-one loses.

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 23:13

    WHAT A BLOCK!

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 23:13

    nooo!

    surely a given

  • Pat W22/06/2014 at 23:13

    Wow

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 23:13

I thought that was surely in/1

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 23:14

usa have less luck than vettel

  • Pat W22/06/2014 at 23:14

the thing i don't get is why people in england care so much about england going out. this is really good football. some of the best i've maybe ever seen. dropping the bad teams should equal even better football. no-one loses.

Some people are too tied to country. I bet a load of them will stop watching now. Agreed though, games like this one a really worth watching.

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 23:20

    Oh dear.

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 23:20

    fluffed it

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 23:20

    He's really not been great!

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 23:21

that was 100% in at the half way line. how'd ronaldo miss that opportunity??

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 23:21

    WHAT A GOAL

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 23:21

    YEAAAAHHHHHHHH

  • Pat W22/06/2014 at 23:21

    What! Wow

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 23:21

    They deserve that!

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 23:22

    bloody brilliant shot

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 23:22

    keeper stood there!

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 23:23

I fully expect ronaldo to try smashing them in from all over the field now!

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 23:23

    what a save again

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 23:33

usa seem to have fallen to pieces since scoring.

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 23:38

can't keep the ball for nothing.

yet portugal can't score given all the time in the world.

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 23:39

    INNNNNNNN

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 23:39

    SDADFDFSDF

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 23:39

    WHATWHATWHATWHAT

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 23:39

    GO ON USA!

  • Pat W22/06/2014 at 23:39

    What a run

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 23:39

    this frickin tournament

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 23:39

    stunned.

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 23:39

    he's onside too!

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 23:39

they've barely seen the ball the last 10 minutes.

  • Pat W22/06/2014 at 23:40

they've barely seen the ball the last 10 minutes.

Except heavily in defence. No idea where that goal came from

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 23:40

8 minutes away from 2nd round qualification!

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 23:41

Except heavily in defence. No idea where that goal came from

they've only been battering it up the field. no real sign of control.

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 23:41

    Good old jurgen

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 23:43

    WHAT

    A

    SAVE

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 23:43

goal keeper has to be man of the match. what a display.

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 23:43

ah it was offside though anyways. tim howard is having a stormer since the first goal.

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 23:44

goal keeper has to be man of the match. what a display.

he was written off when he first became big at man utd. went on to everton and became one of the best keepers in the league.

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 23:50

    decent clerance

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 23:50

    useless clearance

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 23:51

    hold on usa!!!

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 23:52

    NO WAY

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 23:52

    GOAL!

  • Pat W22/06/2014 at 23:53

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 23:53

    last 30 seconds

  • Pat W22/06/2014 at 23:53

    What a game

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 23:53

    seconds from qualifying!!

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 23:53

    poor jurgen :(

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 23:54

    unreal!

    i ♥ sport

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 23:54

    to quote sir alex...

    football. bloody hell

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 23:55

Oh god, USA and Germany could do nothing and just walk about for 90 minutes at 0-0 to go through if they wanted!

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 23:55

so usa go through so long as they win or draw against germany?

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 23:56

so usa go through so long as they win or draw against germany?

pretty much yep. a drew sees both teams go through, the winner obviously goes through but the loser would need the ghana--portugal match to be a draw or goal difference prevent the winner from getting more goals in the group than usa

  • Mr C22/06/2014 at 23:56

    oh blimey

  • Lukeh22/06/2014 at 23:59

    awesome scenes in the us!

  • Mr C23/06/2014 at 00:00

the world over in fact. even if you don't like football, what a global event.

  • Mr C23/06/2014 at 00:00

i gotta go. appreciate the company as ever ;)

  • Lukeh23/06/2014 at 00:01

Got to think Germany will beat USA so it'll be all down to by how much, and the result of the other match, which will probably be as good as this one and USA v Ghana. Ghana will be fighting too

  • Pat W23/06/2014 at 00:03

Me too. Great game, loved it. Best get to bed. :) Good to have comments threads, makes it even more fun. :)

Will not be here for many 5pm games this week (other commitments) but will see you for the 9pm ones.

Evening. Just saw this RT'd into my feed from a Sports Illustrated reporter.

    @richarddeitsch 45 mins

U.S.-Portugal drew 18.2 million viewers on ESPN & 6.5 million on @Univision. The combined 24.7M means most-watched U.S. soccer match ever.

  • Pat W23/06/2014 at 19:53

    Group B is done:

    NED 9pts

    CHI 6

  • Lukeh23/06/2014 at 20:21

I like how they tried to score that by rolling it in with their face on the floor.

    Almost glasses.

  • Steven Roy23/06/2014 at 20:23

I am not sure that the Cameroon coach will appreciate the 5 yard backpass in their own box

  • Steven Roy23/06/2014 at 21:08

I love the long diagonal balls Brazil play and the hard balls driven across behind the defence

  • Mr C23/06/2014 at 21:08

  • Steven Roy23/06/2014 at 21:11

    keeper should've had the cross

The benefit of the ball being driven hard across the face of the goal is that it is very difficult for keepers to deal with. That and you have a good chance of a goal even if a defender gets to the ball first

  • Mr C23/06/2014 at 21:12

    true

Mexico have a chance... if they are very efficient at scoring.

  • Steven Roy23/06/2014 at 21:54

These commentators are stopping only just short of calling that a lucky win. Brazil have more gears yet and some of their football is incredible

  • Christine24/06/2014 at 17:37

Bit rubbish that the only time I'm seeing England play is when it doesn't even matter.

  • Steven Roy24/06/2014 at 17:39

That's our choice as well - the French are (apparently) averaging 5.2 goals per game (last 3 games).

That sounds like an awful lot!

  • Pat W25/06/2014 at 20:08

So far in Brazil they scored 3 against Honduras and 5 against Switzerland.

  • Lukeh25/06/2014 at 20:15

    Good volley!

  • Will^25/06/2014 at 20:15

    Ooooooo - good hands

  • Lukeh25/06/2014 at 20:15

They have more chemistry than the England team.

  • Will^25/06/2014 at 20:17

Does anyone know at what point do the yellow cards get wiped?

  • Lukeh25/06/2014 at 20:17

    Great team effort

  • Lukeh25/06/2014 at 20:17

After the group stages if I remember rightly

  • Will^25/06/2014 at 20:18

After the group stages if I remember rightly

That sounds right, I'm just so disconnected with football at the moment.

  • Lukeh25/06/2014 at 20:21

    Wow, that wasn't even close

  • Will^25/06/2014 at 20:21

    He is fast!

  • Pat W25/06/2014 at 20:26

This game makes me think of Sash!

Always get worried when the keeper leaves his little rectangle. Stay in there!

  • Christine25/06/2014 at 20:28

Ooh, that was a massive bang on the head.

  • Will^25/06/2014 at 20:29

This game makes me think of Sash!

I'm sure there is a Sash! pun coming just around the hill...

  • Steven Roy25/06/2014 at 20:29

Always get worried when the keeper leaves his little rectangle. Stay in there!

Is it more worrying if he leaves his big rectangle?

  • Steven Roy25/06/2014 at 20:30

Players are not supposed to be on the field when they are bleeding. Bad refereeing

  • Christine25/06/2014 at 20:30

Is it more worrying if he leaves his big rectangle?

Yes, that would be a concern.

  • Steven Roy25/06/2014 at 20:31

Yes, that would be a concern.

Last night the Italian goalie would have had you really concerned. He was in the little rectangle at the other end of the pitch

  • Christine25/06/2014 at 20:32

He'd do a heck of a job to save a goal from there!

  • Steven Roy25/06/2014 at 20:33

It was injury time and Italy needed a goal. They didn't get it

Oh yea, the bit where they all get desperate, I don't like that. Happens a lot in the knockouts there, I should prepare myself.

You need a tactic to cope with it

You need a tactic to cope with it

It usually involves just not watching the end :)

  • Steven Roy25/06/2014 at 20:38

It usually involves just not watching the end :)

That is a very odd way to watch football

  • Lukeh25/06/2014 at 20:39

I think Phil Neville has actually been really good tonight.

  • Lukeh25/06/2014 at 20:40

    good save!`

  • Christine25/06/2014 at 20:45

Not a lot of goals yet, come on France, step it up.

  • Lukeh25/06/2014 at 20:45

They need a dose of Franck.

  • Steven Roy25/06/2014 at 21:08

  • Pat W25/06/2014 at 21:08

    Now there will be goals.

  • Will^25/06/2014 at 21:08

Will promised me all the goals and I see no goals.

Sorry :( Maybe the French are just coasting because they are already (pretty much certainly) through.

  • Steven Roy25/06/2014 at 21:09

First time I have noticed the little red card above the team name

    Out Of This World Cup

Love that. I wonder how often they bash their heads when they do all that spinning

  • Christine25/06/2014 at 21:24

I have to run, but I'm keeping an eye on the game. There better be a goal before the end... or else (I don't know what yet).

  • Will^25/06/2014 at 21:30

Switz goal - I saw it tell me on Twitter before it had actually been scored (streaming that one)

  • Steven Roy25/06/2014 at 21:31

Should have been a French goal

  • Steven Roy25/06/2014 at 21:40

Shoulda been a goal for Ecuador

  • Will^25/06/2014 at 21:40

    Keeping!

  • Steven Roy25/06/2014 at 21:48

They are just trying to get through the game without injuries etc

  • Steven Roy25/06/2014 at 21:49

Should have been another French goal

  • Steven Roy25/06/2014 at 21:53

No goals in the France game even though Christine was promised some

    Really thought there would be.

  • Pat W25/06/2014 at 21:55

    Next round:

    France to play Nigeria

Switzerland to play Argentina, and good luck with that.

  • Pat W25/06/2014 at 22:53

Looking at tomorrow's games it seems the 5pm group is much more interesting:

    USA v Germany

    Portugal v Ghana

    9pm:

    Korea v Belgium

    Algeria v Russa

  • Pat W25/06/2014 at 22:54

USA and Germany are tied on 4pts, Portugal and Ghana tied on 1pt.

Belgium lead on 6 to Algeria's 3, the others on 1.

  • Pat W26/06/2014 at 16:29

USA and Germany seem happy to play for a draw

  • Steven Roy26/06/2014 at 17:05

    Evening all.

Klose on at the start of the second half. He at least will be desperate for a goal

  • Steven Roy26/06/2014 at 17:10

I don't get why Germany's change strip is red and black when historically it has always been green

  • Steven Roy26/06/2014 at 17:12

    1-0 Germany

  • Steven Roy26/06/2014 at 17:13

Great shot from Thomas Muller from right on the edge of the box across the keeper

  • Pat W26/06/2014 at 17:14

USA in danger of being knocked out now, depending on goal diff

    Game over

    Germany win

  • Christine26/06/2014 at 17:52

We've been watching tennis for half an hour, not a peep out of him. Two minutes of football and he's yelling and swearing at the TV. Can't be good for ya.

Other game finished. Germany and USA through to the next round.

Can't imagine anyone swearing while watching tennis

  • Pat W26/06/2014 at 17:55

    Portugal and Ghana knocked out..

Germany win the group and will play whoever finishes 2nd in the final group, which plays at 9.

USA 2nd will probably play Belgium next..

  • Christine26/06/2014 at 17:55

Fab job by the USA to get through. Slightly embarrassing that they are better than football than us. We might actually have to start calling it soccer.

  • Steven Roy26/06/2014 at 17:58

Muller's goal looks better every time I see it. Placed it absolutely perfectly. If they had 2 goal keepers they would not have saved that

  • Will^26/06/2014 at 19:47

    USA USA USA

    More football soon :)

  • Will^26/06/2014 at 20:06

    Russia ahead already!

  • Will^26/06/2014 at 20:18

Wonder what the rules on points say if two people post a comment on the same second?

I might suggest that the longer comment takes the points :)

  • Will^26/06/2014 at 20:38

That Korean who was charging the free kick was within 3 yards of the ball when it was kicked. What the?

  • Will^26/06/2014 at 20:44

    Off!? A Belgian is gone...

  • Steven Roy26/06/2014 at 20:44

Red card for Defour of Belgium

  • Steven Roy26/06/2014 at 20:45

Definite red card. Two feet, straight legs, studs up

  • Will^26/06/2014 at 20:45

Jumping in with studs, made sure he made contact

  • Will^26/06/2014 at 20:45
