The invite cryptically tells us "It's been way too long" but it seems like just weeks ago we gathered to watch Apple announce new shiny things to the world. Join us once again as we anticipate refreshed iPads, the imminent release of the new OS X Yosemite and a promise of things to come. The curtain opens at 6pm (BST) and we hope the live streaming is more successful this time round. What are you hoping to see?

could be an interesting one. not planning to watch the whole stream, but curious if previous streaming problems have been resolved.

really hope mac minis are announced.

  • Bassano16/10/2014 at 16:22

I know several people thinking the same but unless it's been a total secret, it seems unlikely.

Further predictions to follow, pre-presentation snack preparation is in hand

they're so out of date. wifi on them is hopeless and the graphics are ancient :(

I think they'll wait for Broadwell or not at all

    Also, my predictions are:

    * New iPads, refreshed Air & mini

    * Yosemite, released today

    * Retina iMac, possibly 27" only

    * No new iPods (though I hope to be proven wrong on that)

  • Bassano16/10/2014 at 16:43

    * And a new nickname for Federighi

  • Mr C16/10/2014 at 16:47

have twit fired up for this one: http://live.twit.tv

if they don't update ipod's, they have to can them. the 5th gen ipod is unusable with iOS 8.

Not sure if they sell in great numbers these days. Maybe a processor/graphics update with the existing shell

it's just wrong to sell a device that isn't fit for purpose.

    Indeed

  • Mr C16/10/2014 at 16:56

another thing desperately needing updating is the non-extreme version of the airport. still running old, old versions of wifi tech.

it's amazing how much apple stuff has been left to gather dust lately.

I dug out my Express last week as I was tired of WiFi dropping out at the other end of the flat. Much cheaper :)

  • Mr C16/10/2014 at 16:58

    my predictions:

    - updated chips in the mac pro

    - new screens announced but not available until next year

    - split screen view in the largest ipad

    but no support for 802.11ac

True. It's usually just iPad reading in bed. If/when the Apple TV gets .ac it'll be a different story

i read that android lollipop comes with live streaming updates, so apple streams should work once you get that downloaded (next month).

i love the sound of RAW camera support and usb audio. looks like a decent update.

    "Developers embraced Healthkit."

Yea, they did. Shame Apple couldn't do the same.

really bad. ios has never had a problem with fragmentation before. a whole new problem if that doesn't change.

    camera roll backtracking.

  • Janna16/10/2014 at 17:20

Do you have to pay for iCloud storage? Is it reasonable? Just wondering if you're storing photos, videos &c.

  • Mr C16/10/2014 at 17:20

photos beta is coming back. how can it still not be finished??

  • Alex Andronov16/10/2014 at 17:20

really bad. ios has never had a problem with fragmentation before. a whole new problem if that doesn't change.

It's difficult to know exactly... The stats weren't properly out before 7 and there is a theory that it was much more quickly adopted because of the new look. I think it takes the new phones to be in peoples hands for a lot of people. But it will be interesting to see. You are right it's a big problem if it doesn't improve.

  • Alex Andronov16/10/2014 at 17:21

    Good news.

If you use moments & collections then you are fine. But there was always camera roll which was basically a scrolling list of everything.

I mainly noticed it if using poorly designed image editing tools which suddenly had no pictures in because they were looking for something that didn't exist.

  • Bassano16/10/2014 at 17:25

I'm not a fan of the flatter design of Yosemite. Will take a while to get used to

Dreadfully leggy though. Plus the screen is full of cracks, and soother the screen is missing.

  • Alex Andronov16/10/2014 at 17:39

The first camera that my mum has owned of her own is an iPad. I know this sounds like a mad thing to say, but there has always been a "family" point and shoot... But she wanted her own iPad for reading, then discovered it had a camera and she uses it (even though it's a terrible camera).

  • Bassano16/10/2014 at 17:39

  • Alex Andronov16/10/2014 at 17:51

    No mute switch, as rumoured

I wanted it as a rotation lock as first, rather than the mute. But it turned out that I really want mute and rotation on my phone, but rarely do either on my iPad.

  • Alex Andronov16/10/2014 at 17:53

Thank goodness for Touch ID! It's crazymaking when it's on your phone but not the iPad.

  • Mr C16/10/2014 at 17:53

i have no choice regarding upgrading, the 1st gen mini has had it the same as the touch.

Productivity on the iPad... I think that's a big push

  • Alex Andronov16/10/2014 at 17:56

    That's a cool feature!!!

  • Mr C16/10/2014 at 17:56

    That's a cool feature!!!

photoshop does it on ipad, by sending the image to the server, processing it, sending it back.

    that was amazing.

  • Noelinho16/10/2014 at 17:57

OK, now that's a productivity app I could use. Though I'd still need to send the end result somewhere.

  • Mr C16/10/2014 at 17:57

glad we have a mini, but seeing as they didn't redesign it, why couldn't they have updated it last year.

i think all i have to buy from today's news is a mac mini.

i'd like the retina (and it's very much needed for ios graphics), not sure i absolutely need one though.

  • Mr C16/10/2014 at 18:37

    & with you *hugs back*

  • Bassano16/10/2014 at 18:50

Leo's already purchased a new iMac

  • Noelinho16/10/2014 at 18:59

None of the Mac Minis are quad-core. That's quite disappointing. The upgrade to 16Gb RAM is pretty steep too.

  • Bassano16/10/2014 at 18:59

Then who would buy an iMac?

  • Noelinho16/10/2014 at 19:00

Then who would buy an iMac?

Someone who wants a display with their computer? Plus, their chips are still faster.

The Mac Pro starts at £2499 ;)

  • Noelinho16/10/2014 at 19:02

The retina does... non-retina is cheaper than that.

  • Bassano16/10/2014 at 19:02

...The upgrade to 16Gb RAM is pretty steep too.

£160 is still way better than their RAM options used to be.

Not as good as Crucial though, obviously

  • Noelinho16/10/2014 at 19:03

£160 is still way better than their RAM options used to be.

True. I expect I'd just have to settle for an 8Gn version.
