Sidepodcast has not jumped the shark, I promise. There's a tenuous F1 connection here somewhere.

As we've mentioned several times in the past, the entire Sidepodcast project is built upon the product foundations that Apple have built and we've long since come to the conclusion that it wouldn't be possible to do what we do with anything else.

Later on Wednesday, the entire of the technology world will be looking in the direction of San Francisco, where Apple are holding a media event to launch a new product. The sensible money says it will be a tablet shaped product.

Proceedings kick off at 6pm GMT and we'll be specifically looking for announcements that directly affect what we do including:

  • Improvements to video quality - Currently the size and quality of our F1 video podcasts are tied directly to what the iPhone will support. Might we see improvements in this area?
  • Podcasts in the cloud - Will the iTunes eco-system see personal content made available online, and if so will that change how media is consumed?
  • Tablets everywhere - How portable and affordable will the rumoured device be, and can we make use of one or more of them in a live streaming environment?

Admittedly very little of this is specifically F1 related, but any hardware or software improvements will likely reflect on the kind of Formula 1 coverage Sidepodcast is able to provide this year.

We'll be following the launch via words and pictures on the Endgadget's Live Blog and will keep this post up-to-date with any relevant announcements. If you're interested in joining the fun, we'll be ticking off the rumours with this handy Prediction Score Card and posting updates in the comments too.

The Tablet interests me. The rumours have driven me crazy. I just want to see what it is now...

  • Lynch27/01/2010 at 12:34

... my guess is that (over here at least) it wont be available for at least a few months... (assuming it is what we are expecting)

Looking forward to finding out what the Apple iThingy is later today. Could be another game changer. Hope it is a good magazine reader ...

The teams might start using them to start the cars up instead of flaptops?

Probably means so he can read the Economist on it. I highly doubt AUTOSPORT has grand visions on joining this millennium with a regular electronic format of their magazine.

    true enough.

I wonder how BOL will cover it, considering that 6pm UK time is the normal broadcast time?

  • Nathan27/01/2010 at 13:02

Are any of the TV channels broadcasting the conference live? Leo said he had been in contact with CNN about him covering it but they changed their minds because of the state of the union address.

  • me27/01/2010 at 13:05

usually they don't. although bbc had a feed once. this isn't just any old event though, so maybe.

  • Nick in Dubai27/01/2010 at 13:08

It seems strange they are going up against it, they will still have huge ubercoverage, but they will be sacrificing some space on frontpages

  • RubberGoat27/01/2010 at 13:23

Listening to BOL 1152 and Natali Del Conte admitted she is having dreams (nightmares?) about it ... apparently last time she dreamt it was a coffee machine or a toaster!

I just had a thought which really startled me... All the time I've been thinking about magazines on the tablet I've been imagining magazines with... you know extra wizzy things and video and whatnot and everything... but then I suddenly thought hold on... magazines are like the albums of the publishing world... What we should be expecting is the ability to get 1 article right? Like you can just buy one track etc.

  • me27/01/2010 at 13:35

What we should be expecting is the ability to get 1 article right? Like you can just buy one track etc.

fair point. 59p each? sounds good to me.

  • Alex Andronov27/01/2010 at 13:37

fair point. 59p each? sounds good to me.

Well I was wondering... Maybe lower for the article... Remember the whole contents list roughtly should add up the whole magazine price or maybe 20% more.

How many articles in an autosport (see keeping it F1 related)? Dank?

  • Nick in Dubai27/01/2010 at 13:42

fair point. 59p each? sounds good to me.

Knowing how much it costs to source magazine articles, i would be tempted to start a business :D

  • me27/01/2010 at 13:44

Well I was wondering... Maybe lower for the article... Remember the whole contents list roughtly should add up the whole magazine price or maybe 20% more.

was basing it on what i'd pay for an autosport feature article.

forget what the magazine retails for, the price will be what the market will bear.

  • me27/01/2010 at 13:45

Knowing how much it costs to source magazine articles, i would be tempted to start a business :D

what does it cost to source quality articles?

the new pop stars of this world may be celebrity journos.

  • Nick in Dubai27/01/2010 at 13:47

forget what the magazine retails for, the price will be what the market will bear.

It could also help separate what people are willing to pay for?

    News = Information = Free

    Analysis = Insight = Pay

Of course specialist news and infomation will be paid for, but if its something like that come from a press relase, or statement then i dont think people will be so willing to pay for the 'forwarding on' of it as it were?

  • me27/01/2010 at 13:47

the new pop stars of this world may be celebrity journos.

no more filler content though, every article counts.

might be bad for smaller motorsports categories mind you. would you pay for formula vee coverage?

  • Nick in Dubai27/01/2010 at 13:48

what does it cost to source quality articles?

You can do it for as little as $2

    For decent quality $10-15

  • me27/01/2010 at 13:48

    News = Information = Free

    Analysis = Insight = Pay

autosport already proved that though. as does gp+

  • me27/01/2010 at 13:48

    For decent quality $10-15

but will the writers want a cut now? i certainly would.

  • Nick in Dubai27/01/2010 at 13:49

True, but it doesnt seem to have gone into the mainstream. Murdoch thinks he can charge you to read what someone just said in a speech to the public

  • Nick in Dubai27/01/2010 at 13:50

but will the writers want a cut now? i certainly would.

The smart ones will, there are plenty who will just freelance for you on a word rate

  • me27/01/2010 at 13:50

True, but it doesnt seem to have gone into the mainstream. Murdoch thinks he can charge you to read what someone just said in a speech to the public

that's not true is it? he wants to be able to afford to be able to send people to events to get that speech.

  • me27/01/2010 at 13:50

The smart ones will, there are plenty who will just freelance for you on a word rate

you're assuming that this won't change everything.

    everything you know is wrong.

  • Nick in Dubai27/01/2010 at 13:52

that's not true is it? he wants to be able to afford to be able to send people to events to get that speech.

I dont have any problem if that adds to the article and gives better insight, but if it was live on cnn, i dont think people should or will pay?

Its a bit like gmm telling us the race result, vs Joe telling us what really went on at the track in a GP+ Article

  • me27/01/2010 at 13:52

I dont have any problem if that adds to the article and gives better insight, but if it was live on cnn, i dont think people should or will pay?

hmmm. i think we've been down this road before. i don't recall it ending well. another time maybe, but i'll leave it there.

  • Nick in Dubai27/01/2010 at 13:54

you're assuming that this won't change everything.

Oh it will, but there are people who will still do content for a fixed fee.

I worked out i could probably do GMM cheaper than they do the other day... scary thought!

  • Nick in Dubai27/01/2010 at 13:54

The problem has always been that if the article is behind a paywall it's harder to spread around.

My guess is that we'll see some kind of better system for it. If the roadbump price for downloading is really low you'll get a lot of traffic. 2p? For news 59p for Features?

If you hit for access and it just authorises it through iTunes then it doesn't matter... it's worth a look for 2p.

  • me27/01/2010 at 13:56

2p may as well be free though? and we can already make more than 2p on ad views and it isn't enough to bother.

  • Alex Andronov27/01/2010 at 13:56

If you hit for access and it just authorises it through iTunes then it doesn't matter... it's worth a look for 2p.

As a final thought: a free news article could sell the feature, pointing to what your missing if you dont read it?

Anyhow, Back to work for me :)

2p may as well be free though? and we can already make more than 2p on ad views and it isn't enough to bother.

The Sun, by the by, costs 20p per day. Hence my questioning of 59p for news.

Yeah I don't think I've ever opened it? I would be more than prepared to pay for sensible news though. I still buy a newspaper 5 days a week though so.... :D

  • Alex Andronov27/01/2010 at 14:06

That's quite cheap! I'm not sure the Sun is the benchmark I'd like to be using :P

Well I know... I'm being ridiculously precise which is silly. But I was just exploring if it makes sense to buy individual articles or not. Maybe it works for some but not others... But perhaps they say the minimum breakdown price you can set for an article is 59p but if say the whole paper costs 20p then buying 1 article buys you the lot.

  • Alison27/01/2010 at 14:07

really only have autosport/gp+ to base my logic on. i don't read newspapers and haven't for maybe two years. i couldn't even guess what they cost.

  • Alison27/01/2010 at 14:13

Errrrr quite a lot! I would have a quick look but I've had a mega clearout before I went away. I've not been anywhere but work since I got back....

I'm not sure. I like having it all together. There are some bits that I have no interest in. Like I always throw a fair few of the supplements away without reading. I'd probably still be annoyed if they were missing though :P

  • Alison27/01/2010 at 14:15

It would probably suit me to have articles in digital form in a more library like sense though because sometimes you read things you really like or want to take a book review to the library so you don't forget the name. Maybe you want to show it to someone. I'd feel a bit weird carrying around newspaper clippings :P

Indeed. I think the Verizon thing is wishful thinking in the US market. Apple execs were pretty supportive of AT&T on Monday's conference call.

I don't think it will be subscription only... I am going to guess wildly that we see 3G included for free with 2 prices for everything at home price or 3G tax.

  • me27/01/2010 at 17:16

I don't like the White MacBook, I considered a BlackBook but they're still holding high value 2nd hand

Refurb MacBook Pro 13" are under £700

  • Alex Andronov27/01/2010 at 17:19

A tablet would really work for me as it wouldn't have to crunch too heavily

It depends what it does... Remember writing on the tablet is the hardest thing to understand. I mean once you hold the phone in the hand it's comfy to write on it. Holding the weight of the 10" device is hard to figure out... So they may be de-emphasisng that to try and encourage you to use it for content. That makes it more an alongside device than a replacement device.

hd video is also crunch heavy.

Would need a decent GPU though I doubt it'd get one in the first revision

  • me27/01/2010 at 17:23

it could have a dedicated h.264 chip for the heavy lifting. i think you'd probably push a device like this more than you think.

    big question though... flash support?

  • Alex Andronov27/01/2010 at 17:23

    big question though... flash support?

    No way. Not a chance.

  • Bassano27/01/2010 at 17:24

    big question though... flash support?

    I'm saying no

Safari & Click for Flash is great

  • me27/01/2010 at 17:24

    No way. Not a chance.

what are they going to say though? the device can't handle it?

  • Bassano27/01/2010 at 17:24

    Another bag of hurt? ;)

  • me27/01/2010 at 17:25

    I'm saying no

Safari & Click for Flash is great

agreed. but the web isn't quite ready for no flash. as much as i want it.

    look at the mclaren launch.

  • Alex Andronov27/01/2010 at 17:25

what are they going to say though? the device can't handle it?

They aren't going to mention it. Why would they want to include it? The daring fireball article the other day was right on.

  • Alex Andronov27/01/2010 at 17:25

agreed. but the web isn't quite ready for no flash. as much as i want it.

    Apple is making a point.

  • Bassano27/01/2010 at 17:26

agreed. but the web isn't quite ready for no flash. as much as i want it.

Since when has Apple been bothered what is ready?

Apart from people handing over cash

  • me27/01/2010 at 17:26

    Apple is making a point.

they are, but is anyone really listening? google are doing their thing because it suits them, not because of the iphone.

They don't want anyone to control a fundemental part of how the machine "works". That's why they don't want anything running in the background that they don't control.

  • me27/01/2010 at 17:28

They don't want anyone to control a fundemental part of how the machine "works". That's why they don't want anything running in the background that they don't control.

i guess so. i just think if goes on sale without flash, on a screen size where people are used to seeing flash, it may not go down so well.

no cutomer expected flash on a phone, because it's never really been there. but on your lap it has.

  • Alex Andronov27/01/2010 at 17:29

They don't want anyone to control a fundemental part of how the machine "works". That's why they don't want anything running in the background that they don't control.

Steve is providing you with the "experience" What happens in other peoples apps is their concern but flash runs in his app, Safari. And so it's a no-no.

  • Bassano27/01/2010 at 17:29

no cutomer expected flash on a phone, because it's never really been there. but on your lap it has.

YouTube works on the iPhone without Flash [mostly]

  • me27/01/2010 at 17:30

Steve is providing you with the "experience" What happens in other peoples apps is their concern but flash runs in his app, Safari. And so it's a no-no.

hmmm. you can make flash-like apps using the iphone sdk. i don't see the difference.

  • Alex Andronov27/01/2010 at 17:30

i guess so. i just think if goes on sale without flash, on a screen size where people are used to seeing flash, it may not go down so well.

The head of a big web firm in the states made his firm redo their entire website because it didn't work on his iPhone.

  • me27/01/2010 at 17:30

YouTube works on the iPhone without Flash [mostly]

see previous comment. it suits google for that to be the case.

  • Bassano27/01/2010 at 17:30

    The have an Adobe-less quality?

  • me27/01/2010 at 17:32

The head of a big web firm in the states made his firm redo their entire website because it didn't work on his iPhone.

mclaren are arguably one of the biggest teams in one of the biggest sports... has a flash only site. mercedes are a massive car manufacturer... live streaming on monday, flash only.

iphone's lack of flash it hasn't made a big impact.

  • Alex Andronov27/01/2010 at 17:33

Flash is the piece of software that crashes the most on the mac. They won't let any add-ins into the space and it suits Apple very much to crush Flash Quicktime and Flash are huge competitors.

  • Tom G27/01/2010 at 17:33

Quote from the Gizmodo live blog that I rather like, because it's rather similar to what I'm thinking: 'I hope Apple announces a tablet that’s really just 6 iPod touches glued together, bezels and all.' ;)

  • me27/01/2010 at 17:33

    The have an Adobe-less quality?

not true. the beta of flash CS5 will compile flash apps into an iphone native application. there is no longer a line.

  • me27/01/2010 at 17:34

Flash is the piece of software that crashes the most on the mac. They won't let any add-ins into the space and it suits Apple very much to crush Flash Quicktime and Flash are huge competitors.

    i very much agree.

i just think they will be more fuss from consumers if the tablet doesn't support it.

  • Bassano27/01/2010 at 17:34

i just think they will be more fuss from consumers if the tablet doesn't support it.

I kinda hope it'll provoke the debate to replace Flash as the defacto choice

  • Alex Andronov27/01/2010 at 17:35

iphone's lack of flash it hasn't made a big impact.

No but this is where things change I think. I think the tablet allows you to make a really nice interactive HTML5 page which has video and all the interaction and you want to make your site for the tablet work and then somebody says to you... Oh by the way we can do that for the web too.

  • me27/01/2010 at 17:35

not true. the beta of flash CS5 will compile flash apps into an iphone native application. there is no longer a line.

*closed beta that is. but i believe there are apps approved and in the itunes store now, that were built using flash.

  • Bassano27/01/2010 at 17:35

I kinda hope it'll provoke the debate to replace Flash as the defacto choice

    Speaking as a non-content creator

  • me27/01/2010 at 17:36

I kinda hope it'll provoke the debate to replace Flash as the defacto choice

    Speaking as a non-content creator

me too. we're in agreement on that. i just don't think it will.

google is more likely to do that via youtube.

  • Alex Andronov27/01/2010 at 17:37

*closed beta that is. but i believe there are apps approved and in the itunes store now, that were built using flash.

And there are applications written in .NET on the iPhone too... By the time they are complied they aren't Flash or .NET anymore.

  • me27/01/2010 at 17:37

By the time they are complied they aren't Flash or .NET anymore.

but they look like flash apps and they look like .net apps. which was my point.

  • Alex Andronov27/01/2010 at 17:38

me too. we're in agreement on that. i just don't think it will.

I think Apple is able to add flash any time they like. But they won't include it and will cave if that's a problem.

  • me27/01/2010 at 17:39

should we be worried the apple store hasn't gone down?

  • Alex Andronov27/01/2010 at 17:39

but they look like flash apps and they look like .net apps. which was my point.

But they are all games... If you want to write something that looks like a standard app it has to stop looking like flash... it has to look like a real app.

  • Alex Andronov27/01/2010 at 17:40

should we be worried the apple store hasn't gone down?

They aren't going to launch anything today I don't think

  • Alex Andronov27/01/2010 at 17:40

They aren't going to launch anything today I don't think

They will offer the SDK and show it and then launch in march. So get writing your content.

  • me27/01/2010 at 17:41

But they are all games... If you want to write something that looks like a standard app it has to stop looking like flash... it has to look like a real app.

    is that true?

  • Alex Andronov27/01/2010 at 17:41

I'm going prediction crazy because we'll have to stop predicting soon

  • Alex Andronov27/01/2010 at 17:41

    is that true?

I believe so. That's what the approval process is for.

    fair enough.

to us, books were the very last bit of old media we owned. the last non-digital piece of the puzzle.

    $829 is a good price for me.. I said I'd pay £800 :)

64GB with 3G will be close to that, maybe £700/750

  • me27/01/2010 at 19:46

So can this, or can this not, do multi-tasking?

    i would guess no.

    but does it need to?

  • Dank27/01/2010 at 19:47

    but does it need to?

Seems a bit silly to omit that when it's netbook size and that's where its competition lies?

  • Alex Andronov27/01/2010 at 19:47

And Steve Jobs claims it to be the "best browsing experience available," yet has no Flash support? Right...

Yeah... Exactly... Flash is a terrible browsing experience.

  • Bassano27/01/2010 at 19:47

i think the $499 would do for us. but we need one each!

One of which would need to be 3G for you, I'd imagine

    $629

    that could easily change though.

  • Bassano27/01/2010 at 19:48

Why would I need a 64GB rather than 16GB when I have a portable drive for my media?

  • Christine27/01/2010 at 19:49

Seems a bit silly to omit that when it's netbook size and that's where its competition lies?

    It's bigger than a netbook, isn't it?

  • me27/01/2010 at 19:49

Why would I need a 64GB rather than 16GB when I have a portable drive for my media?

16gb is quite small, if you buy a lot of tv shows. lost in hd is flipping huge.

  • Alex Andronov27/01/2010 at 19:50

i can't say i've ever held up the touch and thought "damn the lack of multitasking".

The only time that the iPhone annoys me with that is when I want to broadcast my live moving location while writing comments on Sidepodcast. I have to say it's not something that affects me very often :)

  • Bassano27/01/2010 at 19:50

Why would I need a 64GB rather than 16GB when I have a portable drive for my media?

Why do you want a portable drive for your media?

  • Bassano27/01/2010 at 19:50

16gb is quite small, if you buy a lot of tv shows. lost in hd is flipping huge.

    About a gig per episode?

  • RubberGoat27/01/2010 at 19:50

Seems a bit silly to omit that when it's netbook size and that's where its competition lies?

i can't say i've ever held up the touch and thought "damn the lack of multitasking".

    that could easily change though.

    I have.

On the train trying to doohickey and tweet at the same time...

I am always running out of space on my 32Gb iPhone/

  • Bassano27/01/2010 at 19:51

To have all of it in my bag

Does it have a USB port and can it mount portable drives? I'm kinda doubting it.

  • Lukeh27/01/2010 at 19:51

i can't say i've ever held up the touch and thought "damn the lack of multitasking".

One of the biggest annoyances for the touch to me, I'm surprised they haven't tried to have a solution for the iPad

  • me27/01/2010 at 19:51

Why do you want a portable drive for your media?

i have over 250GB of television, christine has more. that's before you count podcasts. what portable machine can deal with that?

  • Bassano27/01/2010 at 19:51

I am always running out of space on my 32Gb iPhone/

I have an 80GB iPod Classic for everything that's not on my current favourites list

  • RubberGoat27/01/2010 at 19:52

I can see myself using this - on the train for example I could use it as a light browser.

  • Bassano27/01/2010 at 19:52

Does it have a USB port and can it mount portable drives? I'm kinda doubting it.

    It has USB, mountable? Dunno

  • me27/01/2010 at 19:52

really? the browser doesn't close, just flick between the two.

yeah, you'll need a desktop to sync, i'm guessing.

  • Bassano27/01/2010 at 19:53

    1TB portables are about £100

i have over 250GB of television, christine has more. that's before you count podcasts. what portable machine can deal with that?

Right... But my point is... I think the time is over where you are going to carry everything on your "one device". So we have to sync what we want to take with us and so we want the biggest device available. Not to take 2 devices.

  • RubberGoat27/01/2010 at 19:53

The separate threads in safari don't multitask even. Letting alone Gav probably means a seperate app. If you switch page the other doesn't continue loading it freezes.

Right. But say I have two windows open SPC and BBC news. I get to the station and I open both one after the other. I can't, while I'm waiting for BBC News to load read SPC. While I'm reading SPC BBC news isn't loading even though SPC isn't actually loading anything at the time. Although why this doesn't happen is beyond me as it's only one app.

a conversation between mum and i

mum 'so... what's this new apple thing like? what was expected?'

me 'it's like my ipod touch... but much better... and bigger...'

mum 'i thought it was all about having small things these days? how much?'

me 'it's not as expensive as we thought..and have i mentioned how lovely it is to look at photos on?'

    mum 'you're not having one...'

    me 'oh.'

  • Alex Andronov27/01/2010 at 20:06

understood. i guess i just use mine in a different way.

The main difference, for me, is that you are using it on wifi me on 3G. At home I use the laptop for web browsing (at the mo), and then when out and about at the slower speeds I want to use the time while I'm waiting for a page to load to look at something else.

  • Bassano27/01/2010 at 20:07

    I'm guessing £399 [8GB WiFi only ] - £699 [64GB WiFi + 3G]

While I think the latest Apple product is all very nice, but I am sure it will be expensive. I see they criticised the netbook, I only have praise for our MSI wind netbooks (my personal and the departmental ones) - cheaper than iPod Touch and way more useful (especially if you have a good Linux installed like Mint).

looking in more detail. i'd like less frame, it seems excessive.

also there was discussion earlier about a usb connector. but it doesn't appear to have one unless you use the "camera" connector. and even then, you can only use it for cameras.

    still want one though.

  • me27/01/2010 at 22:26

How do you watch your streaming TV with no flash?

you can't, unless they support apple's streaming protocol.

    (currently no-one appear too)

  • James27/01/2010 at 22:28

I guess the ammount of frame is because they've made it so thin and also ensures you don't do something by accident when you pick it up.

I find watching the video for it is a great way to make you want one. I got my friend to watch it and now they want one :)

  • paul27/01/2010 at 22:28

you can't, unless they support apple's streaming protocol.

    hmmm. Nor can you video-chat.

Grrr. I can just see what will be coming in version 2. I hate that.

that is a pretty huge omission, i'll grant you.

  • Andy Taylor27/01/2010 at 22:29

How do you watch your streaming TV with no flash?

iPlayer works just fine on the iPhone/iPod Touch. Other providers will make content available. Flash will become increasingly irrelevant - Apple ahead of the curve once again.

  • James27/01/2010 at 22:29

that is a pretty huge omission, i'll grant you.

Too soon to think about 2nd Gen? ;)

gen 1 is still better than eeepc. however, i'm seeing flaws.

  • paul27/01/2010 at 22:30

Too soon to think about 2nd Gen? ;)

No, and that's the problem. We already know they were ready to put a camera in the ipod Touch.

  • Alison27/01/2010 at 22:30

Too soon to think about 2nd Gen? ;)

Waiting for them is always the best plan if you can be patient!

  • me27/01/2010 at 22:31

  • Paul Convery27/01/2010 at 22:32

Just seems like a giant iPhone/iPod Touch, actually that is exactly what it is. That might work pretty well for a small portable device but the iPad is no more portable than a netbook really, can't see any reason to pick one over a netbook

  • me27/01/2010 at 22:32

  • me27/01/2010 at 22:34

But you could support the Apple technology right?

we could. but it's more expensive.

in fact, we probably will. but it's a lot and it'd have to be via a paid for app i would imagine.

  • Alex Andronov27/01/2010 at 22:34

for me = ibooks. i am desperate to remove the last pieces of old media from our lives.

For me... I have a laptop that I use exactly like I would like to use this device. Lots of surfing and media and not much "work"

  • Andy Taylor27/01/2010 at 22:34

am clearly missing something major here. the iphone does live streaming on iplayer??

Ah. Good point, shows how often I watch TV these days. It'll come though.

  • Alex Andronov27/01/2010 at 22:35

we could. but it's more expensive.

Why? (just don't know what is involved)

  • Macdaddy_F127/01/2010 at 22:35

    Would it be called Sidepadcast?

  • Alex Andronov27/01/2010 at 22:35

Radio at least... Not sure about tv

  • me27/01/2010 at 22:36

For me... I have a laptop that I use exactly like I would like to use this device. Lots of surfing and media and not much "work"

it doesn't do anything that i use my laptop for:

    editing audio - nope

    editing video - nope

    editing photos - nope

however, the eeepc is used for:

    commenting - yep

    browsing - yep

    skype - maybe?

  • Jon "There's No H" Waldock27/01/2010 at 22:36

    Would it be called Sidepadcast?

    #nothere

cant believe we didnt see that coming

  • me27/01/2010 at 22:36

    Would it be called Sidepadcast?

it may have to be now!

  • me27/01/2010 at 22:36

    seconded :)

  • Andy Taylor27/01/2010 at 22:37

    Would it be called Sidepadcast?

    :)

I'm wondering when Apple will release the following products:

iPed - a device that revolutionises the bicycle industy

iPid - a revolutionary device for the gadget freaks' bathroom

iPud - an insanely great dessert making device.

in fact the more i think about it. the ipad really replaces the touch, doesn't it?

  • Macdaddy_F127/01/2010 at 22:39

If you do video, the ipad could be tethered as a monitor from the camera wired or perhaps even wireless.

  • Lukeh27/01/2010 at 22:39

in fact the more i think about it. the ipad really replaces the touch, doesn't it?

    not mine ;)

Sure I have a laptop that I mainly use like you use your eeepc. To be fair I have a strange use case in that I orignally bought my laptop around the time that the eees were taking off and used it as that. Now I am starting to use my laptop as a audio editing machine it often causes problems because Katherine still wants to use it like the eee. So this device is at the right moment.

  • Andy Taylor27/01/2010 at 22:40

    editing audio - nope

    editing video - nope

    editing photos - nope

You can already edit video on the iPhone - OK it's simple cutting the ends off stuff, but if iWork has been announced, how long will it take for other apps to appear. You can also edit photos on the iPhone with the Photoshop app (plus many others). Again, it's only a matter of time.

  • Paul Convery27/01/2010 at 22:40

in fact the more i think about it. the ipad really replaces the touch, doesn't it?

Nope, its not portable. I'd like to see the size of your pockets if you could fit that thing in them

  • me27/01/2010 at 22:40

If you do video, the ipad could be tethered as a monitor from the camera wired or perhaps even wireless.

that would depend on it supporting video in. it has the connection, but will it be enabled, or locked as "out only"?

  • James27/01/2010 at 22:40

in fact the more i think about it. the ipad really replaces the touch, doesn't it?

can't really take it anywhere though. i wouldn't take the iPad with me like i do the ipod touch (really should the iTouch)

  • me27/01/2010 at 22:41

Nope, its not portable. I'd like to see the size of your pockets if you could fit that thing in them

this is where i'm different. the ipod touch goes everywhere with me... in my laptop bag.

  • Macdaddy_F127/01/2010 at 22:41

Ever tried to open a 17' Macbook Pro on an airplane....This will replace my leisure travel computing gear.

  • Alison27/01/2010 at 22:42

Mine follows me around in my handbag. I'd need to invest in a much bigger bag for that I'd say..... :P

When they get to the point of creating a normal Mac that is just a touchscreen I can see it being great, but this sorta half way house between a computer and a smartphone? Don't think its going to be the massive hit the iPhone has been

  • me27/01/2010 at 22:47

When they get to the point of creating a normal Mac that is just a touchscreen I can see it being great, but this sorta half way house between a computer and a smartphone?

i see that, but it's the itunes store integration that appeals. a touch screen mac has no business model built in. we need the business model to convert the newspapers to the virtual world.

  • Andy Taylor27/01/2010 at 22:47

i may be in the minority here.

Well I want one. I know I'm biased, but this is a bigger deal than everything else Apple has produced in the last few years put together. Actually, that's what has happened - one of my colleagues said - "it's like they crossbred an iMac with an iPhone" He's right.

  • me27/01/2010 at 22:49

"it's like they crossbred an iMac with an iPhone" He's right.

i don't agree with that at all. where are the imac ports? where is the imac os?

if anything "a big iphone" sums it up. they just made it bigger.

i do agree it's a very big deal though, but i see no imac.

  • Pat W27/01/2010 at 22:49

Now things have calmed down a bit, can someone please explain in normal language to a complete layman, what has happened and why is it different to existing tablets?

  • Alex Andronov27/01/2010 at 22:50

When they get to the point of creating a normal Mac that is just a touchscreen I can see it being great, but this sorta half way house between a computer and a smartphone? Don't think its going to be the massive hit the iPhone has been

I think believe you may have it entirely backwards. Expect to see this os replace OS X... That's still my view.

  • Paul Convery27/01/2010 at 22:50

i see that, but it's the itunes store integration that appeals. a touch screen mac has no business model built in. we need the business model to convert the newspapers to the virtual world.

Yeah the content on iTunes it great, and if they can make iBooks as big as the music store? I'd love that, but most of that stuff easily enough on a computer, you couldn't on a phone/mp3 player thats why iTunes became a hit

  • me27/01/2010 at 22:50

Now things have calmed down a bit, can someone please explain in normal language to a complete layman, what has happened and why is it different to existing tablets?

first question. what do you call and existing tablet?

  • Andy Taylor27/01/2010 at 22:51

i do agree it's a very big deal though, but i see no imac.

I think he means the look of the device - compare the backs for example.

  • Pat W27/01/2010 at 22:51

first question. what do you call and existing tablet?

I dunno. I'm vaguely aware of laptops with touchscreens instead of keyboards.

  • me27/01/2010 at 22:52

I think he means the look of the device - compare the backs for example.

doesn't the iphone have the same back? or maybe the first gen?

  • Andy Taylor27/01/2010 at 22:52

I dunno. I'm vaguely aware of laptops with touchscreens instead of keyboards.

I'd go and watch the video of Steve Ballmer demonstrating the new HP tablet and then watch the video over at apple.com.

  • me27/01/2010 at 22:53

I dunno. I'm vaguely aware of laptops with touchscreens instead of keyboards.

without something to compare to, that's a tough ask.

i like the device, because it's pretty much what i was hoping it would be. and i can see it fitting a multitude of uses.

  • Alex Andronov27/01/2010 at 22:55

doesn't the iphone have the same back? or maybe the first gen?

1st gen did ish. Looks more like the back of the air to me?

  • Pat W27/01/2010 at 22:55

without something to compare to, that's a tough ask.

Right. But surely this one must have x number of innovations otherwise people wouldn't be falling all over it

  • Paul Convery27/01/2010 at 22:58

Right. But surely this one must have x number of innovations otherwise people wouldn't be falling all over it

It's a giant iPhone. I did not see anything that said that it was anything more than that. Biggest addition is that Apple are adding an ebook store

  • me27/01/2010 at 22:58

Right. But surely this one must have x number of innovations otherwise people wouldn't be falling all over it

    highlights:

    - price waaay lower than expected

    - screen ideal size, doesn't look compromised

    - all iphone apps compatible (when does that ever happen)

    - ibooks

    - 3g is optional

    lowlights:

    - no camera

    - almost zero connectivity

    - total lock in

  • James27/01/2010 at 22:58

Right. But surely this one must have x number of innovations otherwise people wouldn't be falling all over it

The fact thats it is an apple product has something to do with it ;)

they made a product i've been wanting for a year. and mostly they made it right. i bitched my way through the last keynote, but i really thought this hit the spot.

  • Alex Andronov27/01/2010 at 23:00

    - no camera

physical connectivity is that what you mean? eg. Firewire etc?

  • James27/01/2010 at 23:01

  • Pat W27/01/2010 at 23:02

Perhaps. I'm trying not to be too cynical :-)

  • me27/01/2010 at 23:02

physical connectivity is that what you mean? eg. Firewire etc?

yup. usb / firewire / displayport

  • Lukeh27/01/2010 at 23:02

The games are scaled up and look like it. That doesn't mean they're not entirely playable -- Need for Speed actually controlled better with the larger screen; tilting the iPad had less of an effect on the screen than doing the same on the iPhone's comparatively tiny display, meaning we were able to focus on the action while moving the screen around (something many iPhone games simply don't do as well).

Boo, and yay. Mixed feelings. :(

  • Paul Convery27/01/2010 at 23:02

Just looking on Engadget, zero multi-tasking on the iPad

  • Pat W27/01/2010 at 23:03

Understood, thanks. I can certainly see a market for it.

  • me27/01/2010 at 23:04

Just looking on Engadget, zero multi-tasking on the iPad

honestly? my guess is they've done that to aid the transition from iphone apps to ipad apps. from a coding perspective i believe it's the right thing to do.

  • James27/01/2010 at 23:04

Just looking on Engadget, zero multi-tasking on the iPad

  • me27/01/2010 at 23:04

    At the moment ;)

    bingo.

  • Alex Andronov27/01/2010 at 23:05

Boo, and yay. Mixed feelings. :(

The thing is that like what happened with the iPhone / iTouch when it first came out the Apple applications show the potential. It's the individual applications that have been written by 3rd Parties that really show the full amazing abilities. Nothing we've seen written by a third party has had more than 2 weeks of dev time. When we see people really playing with this space it will be very interesting me thinks.

  • me27/01/2010 at 23:05

Boo, and yay. Mixed feelings. :(

that's assuming though, that nobody touches a thing. there are 60 days to make tweeks.

you would want a camera.... on something that big? how would you hold it?

  • Paul Convery27/01/2010 at 23:05

So it's acceptable that they screw day one buyers just so they can sell them the second gen version?

  • me27/01/2010 at 23:06

you would want a camera.... on something that big? how would you hold it?

a video camera facing you. for skype chats, like giggle on the parade lap.

  • Alex Andronov27/01/2010 at 23:06

So it's acceptable that they screw day one buyers just so they can sell them the second gen version?

    It'll be a software upgrade.

  • James27/01/2010 at 23:06

So it's acceptable that they screw day one buyers just so they can sell them the second gen version?

It is possible it will be in OS 4.0 but there is no way of knowing.

  • me27/01/2010 at 23:06

So it's acceptable that they screw day one buyers just so they can sell them the second gen version?

it's not impossible that it couldn't be a firmware update.

a video camera facing you. for skype chats, like giggle on the parade lap.

Indeed. I would have really liked that.

ahh yes that would be good. i had visions of a camera like on the iphone.. with people trying to take nice photos with this huge thing :D

  • Andy Taylor27/01/2010 at 23:07

When we see people really playing with this space it will be very interesting me thinks.

We'll have iWork for iPad from day one (and I would expect integration with iwork.com too). Other apps will be adapted too, both from Apple and other developers. That the existing iPhone apps work on it is an added bonus and will help bridge the gap, but there is so much potential there.

  • Alex Andronov27/01/2010 at 23:08

But Joystiq says they've had a hands on with the games?

They played with iPhone games scaled up. Everyone will optimize for iPad (most)

  • me27/01/2010 at 23:08

But Joystiq says they've had a hands on with the games?

yep. all apps that work on the iphone and ipod touch today. work on the ipad today. there's nothing to say all the developers have to take a nap until the hardware hits the shelves.

    guess what i'm doing?

  • Paul Convery27/01/2010 at 23:08

it's not impossible that it couldn't be a firmware update.

No, but we all know that Apple like to have you upgrading good and often to keep the money rolling it

The original iPhone can run iPhone OS 3.0.

It's not Apple's fault that there are people out there who just have to buy everything they produce. I waited 2 years before buying an iPhone. I have a 3GS and expect to keep it for at least 18 months regardless of any new hardware release. The same is true of my Macbook Pro - I want a new one (15" anti-glare display), but will keep using the one I have for now because it still works just fine.

It's not just Apple either - My DSLRs are nearly 3 and 6 years old. I don't plan on replacing either of them any time soon.

  • James27/01/2010 at 23:15

"The tablet will save the newspaper, magazine and book publishing businesses. All of these industries have been having tough times."

quite the statement, and from a photo site too.

  • Journeyer28/01/2010 at 00:57

Wow. So the predictions were pretty much right on the money.

    And it's... VERY cheap.

Just a thought - if they're selling it at $499 in the US, it'll probably go for GBP 499 in the UK. At least that's what I remember them doing with the iPhone.

I think the price is a bit of a con. Everyone was predicting $799 to $999 and that is exactly where the top one is. All they have done is make two low spec models that cost less but lack many of the features of the top model.

  • Journeyer28/01/2010 at 01:36

Yes but what it doesn't mean is what a lot of people are claiming that it is massively cheaper than expected. The one that does what they all want it precisely where they were predicting.

  • Steven Roy28/01/2010 at 01:41

but we don't need those features?

I am sure some people will love the base model but I don't understand Leo and co going on about how low the price is when the spec they were predicting is not at that price and into the bargain the thing doesn't multi-task so it doesn't even meet the spec predicted

none of the models multitaks (yet) and 16gb / wifi model is perfect for our needs.

What are you going to use it for?

replace the eeepc. so general browsing mainly. also for the f1 timing app. it might be useful during a live show in some capacity.

can see us needing once each at some point, but no need for 3g, and no huge need for 64gb of storage.

"One of the selling points of the device, iBooks, which allows users to access an array of e-books and digital textbooks, is not listed as a feature on the iPad page on Apple Australia's website.

This indicates it will not be available to Australian users when the device is launched here in March. A note on the US site says iBooks is "available in the U.S. only"."

    dot dot dot?

  • Alex Andronov28/01/2010 at 07:14

none of the models multitaks (yet) and 16gb / wifi model is perfect for our needs.

I really don't understand why people are going on about multitasking. What reason do you have for multitasking?

Hehe good point. There is also the iPod/iPad similarity...

I can see a use for it as a light browser to replace my netbook. I have a feeling that this is the start of something completely new, even if this device doesn't seem that different.

everyone who I've heard interviewed or have read has said a) when you hold it you are completely sold on it. It just makes perfect sense and b) it's only $100 more than a kindle and makes the kindle look like it's from the stone age.

The screen is much bigger and there's no buttons too.

I had a silly thought - I use iPod Socks to protect my iTouch, and I wonder how big you would have to make one to fit the iPad? :D

all the comparisons with the kindle annoy me because I don't care that the kindle doesn't do anything else, I bought it to read books and it does that perfectly without hurting my eyes, and the battery lasts for 10 days, which suits me far more than 10 hours.

I'm not trying to say that you're wrong with the kindle at all. But to my mind apple won't be selling it as "look I know it can't do as much as your laptop but it is cheaper by $x" they'll be selling it the other way. It's the most expensive ebook reader sure, but can your ebook reader do this as well.

    Yes, but:

    - The iPad is only a little more expensive and does loads more things

    - The Kindle dropped the ball by not releasing internationally soon enough and not making a colour version...

It depends which publishers they can hook up with.

And the thing is, how many people will buy the iPad for the apps rather than the books?

I don't read a lot of those to be honest. I read Time for a couple of weeks on the Kindle and found it to be fine but I'm not regularly a Time reader so when my free trial run out I stopped getting it. I guess I'm definitely not in their target market because I don't care that it doesn't do all the other things, I like having it do one thing and have it do it really well.

the iPad thing looks nice, it does some cool things, but I can't see what is all the fuss about. The Apple boys are great in marketing, they managed to create some serious hype. But I see money spent for this a money spent for something one does not really need. Cool thing to have, but I sure can survive with laptop and phone combo

  • Alison28/01/2010 at 09:04

It doesn't. Obviously it isn't! But I'm not sure it would really fill a hole in my life. It's not small enough to go in my handbag. I don't really try to do things on a computer while I'm out and about that I can't do with my phone.

  • Amy28/01/2010 at 09:05

Hello all, sent home from work due to cold. Before I go to bed with chocolate milk my favourite tweets about the iPad:

LouisTrapani: The only thing missing from the Apple iPad are the words "Don't Panic" in large friendly letters on it

daraobriain: My nagging doubt about the iPad. The minute you got one, you'd hold it to your ear and shout "I'M ON THE TRAIN" like Dom Joly

I said something like that earlier.

I think what is exciting here is not the product, but the potential. Where will this lead? Will we all use tablets? Will we even need mice and keyboards, or will we just swipe, tap and gesture?

I think in a couple of iterations this will become the first true cloud computer...

the big sell for me, is you can just flip the device over and show people stuff. laptops are really awkward in that sense.
