Sidepodcast has not jumped the shark, I promise. There's a tenuous F1 connection here somewhere.
As we've mentioned several times in the past, the entire Sidepodcast project is built upon the product foundations that Apple have built and we've long since come to the conclusion that it wouldn't be possible to do what we do with anything else.
Later on Wednesday, the entire of the technology world will be looking in the direction of San Francisco, where Apple are holding a media event to launch a new product. The sensible money says it will be a tablet shaped product.
Proceedings kick off at 6pm GMT and we'll be specifically looking for announcements that directly affect what we do including:
- Improvements to video quality - Currently the size and quality of our F1 video podcasts are tied directly to what the iPhone will support. Might we see improvements in this area?
- Podcasts in the cloud - Will the iTunes eco-system see personal content made available online, and if so will that change how media is consumed?
- Tablets everywhere - How portable and affordable will the rumoured device be, and can we make use of one or more of them in a live streaming environment?
Admittedly very little of this is specifically F1 related, but any hardware or software improvements will likely reflect on the kind of Formula 1 coverage Sidepodcast is able to provide this year.
We'll be following the launch via words and pictures on the Endgadget's Live Blog and will keep this post up-to-date with any relevant announcements. If you're interested in joining the fun, we'll be ticking off the rumours with this handy Prediction Score Card and posting updates in the comments too.
The Tablet interests me. The rumours have driven me crazy. I just want to see what it is now...
... my guess is that (over here at least) it wont be available for at least a few months... (assuming it is what we are expecting)
i've found an f1 connection. from geoff creighton:
Looking forward to finding out what the Apple iThingy is later today. Could be another game changer. Hope it is a good magazine reader ...
http://twitter.com/gcreighton/status/8274936714
Keep trying ;)
The teams might start using them to start the cars up instead of flaptops?
#f1connection
Probably means so he can read the Economist on it. I highly doubt AUTOSPORT has grand visions on joining this millennium with a regular electronic format of their magazine.
Not here
Leo is going live around 4pm UK time
ooh, must follow.
true enough.
I wonder how BOL will cover it, considering that 6pm UK time is the normal broadcast time?
Are any of the TV channels broadcasting the conference live? Leo said he had been in contact with CNN about him covering it but they changed their minds because of the state of the union address.
usually they don't. although bbc had a feed once. this isn't just any old event though, so maybe.
It seems strange they are going up against it, they will still have huge ubercoverage, but they will be sacrificing some space on frontpages
Listening to BOL 1152 and Natali Del Conte admitted she is having dreams (nightmares?) about it ... apparently last time she dreamt it was a coffee machine or a toaster!
I just had a thought which really startled me... All the time I've been thinking about magazines on the tablet I've been imagining magazines with... you know extra wizzy things and video and whatnot and everything... but then I suddenly thought hold on... magazines are like the albums of the publishing world... What we should be expecting is the ability to get 1 article right? Like you can just buy one track etc.
fair point. 59p each? sounds good to me.
Well I was wondering... Maybe lower for the article... Remember the whole contents list roughtly should add up the whole magazine price or maybe 20% more.
How many articles in an autosport (see keeping it F1 related)? Dank?
Knowing how much it costs to source magazine articles, i would be tempted to start a business :D
was basing it on what i'd pay for an autosport feature article.
forget what the magazine retails for, the price will be what the market will bear.
what does it cost to source quality articles?
the new pop stars of this world may be celebrity journos.
It could also help separate what people are willing to pay for?
News = Information = Free
Analysis = Insight = Pay
Of course specialist news and infomation will be paid for, but if its something like that come from a press relase, or statement then i dont think people will be so willing to pay for the 'forwarding on' of it as it were?
no more filler content though, every article counts.
might be bad for smaller motorsports categories mind you. would you pay for formula vee coverage?
You can do it for as little as $2
For decent quality $10-15
autosport already proved that though. as does gp+
but will the writers want a cut now? i certainly would.
True, but it doesnt seem to have gone into the mainstream. Murdoch thinks he can charge you to read what someone just said in a speech to the public
The smart ones will, there are plenty who will just freelance for you on a word rate
that's not true is it? he wants to be able to afford to be able to send people to events to get that speech.
you're assuming that this won't change everything.
everything you know is wrong.
I dont have any problem if that adds to the article and gives better insight, but if it was live on cnn, i dont think people should or will pay?
Its a bit like gmm telling us the race result, vs Joe telling us what really went on at the track in a GP+ Article
hmmm. i think we've been down this road before. i don't recall it ending well. another time maybe, but i'll leave it there.
Oh it will, but there are people who will still do content for a fixed fee.
I worked out i could probably do GMM cheaper than they do the other day... scary thought!
ah yes, no worries sir! ;)
The problem has always been that if the article is behind a paywall it's harder to spread around.
My guess is that we'll see some kind of better system for it. If the roadbump price for downloading is really low you'll get a lot of traffic. 2p? For news 59p for Features?
If you hit for access and it just authorises it through iTunes then it doesn't matter... it's worth a look for 2p.
2p may as well be free though? and we can already make more than 2p on ad views and it isn't enough to bother.
Really? How many people read the lead article on the guardian site?
As a final thought: a free news article could sell the feature, pointing to what your missing if you dont read it?
Anyhow, Back to work for me :)
The Sun, by the by, costs 20p per day. Hence my questioning of 59p for news.
i guess we'll have to wait and see. a weekly price might work better £1 for five days worth of news.
That's quite cheap! I'm not sure the Sun is the benchmark I'd like to be using :P
i don't even read the free website :)
They mentioned Franck!
true. and you read the content out to me.
Yeah I don't think I've ever opened it? I would be more than prepared to pay for sensible news though. I still buy a newspaper 5 days a week though so.... :D
Well I know... I'm being ridiculously precise which is silly. But I was just exploring if it makes sense to buy individual articles or not. Maybe it works for some but not others... But perhaps they say the minimum breakdown price you can set for an article is 59p but if say the whole paper costs 20p then buying 1 article buys you the lot.
To clarify this newspaper is not the Sun!!!
:)
really only have autosport/gp+ to base my logic on. i don't read newspapers and haven't for maybe two years. i couldn't even guess what they cost.
About a pound a day? More at the weekend.
presumably they're stuffed full of ads. how many articles would you guess they contain a day?
Errrrr quite a lot! I would have a quick look but I've had a mega clearout before I went away. I've not been anywhere but work since I got back....
I'm not sure. I like having it all together. There are some bits that I have no interest in. Like I always throw a fair few of the supplements away without reading. I'd probably still be annoyed if they were missing though :P
It would probably suit me to have articles in digital form in a more library like sense though because sometimes you read things you really like or want to take a book review to the library so you don't forget the name. Maybe you want to show it to someone. I'd feel a bit weird carrying around newspaper clippings :P
i'd also pay more if it was searchable. that offers more value to me than paper.
they will call a feature clippings I reckon! Like it!
:D Love it.
I really want one of these now, can i have one tomorrow?
You already agreed to buy me one first!
We could share?
I get to have it, and you get to know that i have it?
Deal?
So what do we think about battery life what would be acceptable to you?
Excuse me? You already said it probably wouldn't work there.... I think I should look after it, you could look at it.
equal to the recent mac books would be excellent. 6+ hours, but i'm never far from power.
#random idea
Solar Sombrero... alows you to power all your gadgets using the pwer of the sun.
Aslo has added benefit of shading the screen from bright light...
a large part of me wants this new product to be a Verizon iPhone and no tablet.
I just think that would be very funny.
But I'm weird.
Engadget thinks verizon could be the exclusive carrier for it, which probably means vodaphone in the uk
Oooh vodafone have coverage at my house! #nomeanfeat
Verizon uses CDMA right? No CDMA in UK?
Indeed. I think the Verizon thing is wishful thinking in the US market. Apple execs were pretty supportive of AT&T on Monday's conference call.
I have left work early so I can enjoy the launch in one go :)
I like your style!
he he :)
to add to the style element I am currently holding 10 shirts.
I would imagine that all you need to really enjoy the launch is some of those once-you-pop-you-can't-stop Pringles.
blimey! Good thinking!
I'm pretty what apple are really unveiling are Pringles that never stop
I'd definitely want some of those.
Leo just about to go live
http://live.twit.tv/
I see that Apple related items make up five of the top ten trending topics on Twitter. I wonder if they will manage the whole list when it starts.
Since it is only 9am on the US west coast I think that is a certainty
hi there. I'm not here, but you managed to get someone who doesn't even think about owning a mac excited about an apple announcement... :-)
(ok, I'm interested in apple gadgets ;-) )
Ah, our own thread to gush in
I was gonna start the one hour countdown with a warning to load up the negative filter
Now there's no need
Strong rumours that AT&T will lose iPhone exclusivity in the U.S. with maybe an announcement today, if not by June
I do hope a tablet doesn't come as a subscription only model
I'm so excited... And I just can't hide it... I'm about to lose control and I think I like it :)
What's your maximum price?
Hey all. Nearly time!
Hey ya
am home earlier 'specially :)
Now I want a Crunchie
Ummm... It depends. I may well not have one... I am mad... remember.
I was thinking that actually...
Oooh Merlin is on the twit show
we will buy one eventually whatever the price. buy today price is probably around the £400 mark, but am expecting it not to be available yet, so plenty of time to save.
My body decided to make itself ill, so I didn't have to got to worl 'specially!
*work *mutters about daft keyboard*
I think it will be £800 and not available until March.
i will cry. it'll just mean they can push the price up more too.
I'll get a MacBook Pro instead
Surely, it must be cheaper than the notebook range
I don't think it will be subscription only... I am going to guess wildly that we see 3G included for free with 2 prices for everything at home price or 3G tax.
do we think it'll be a replacement? am thinking it'll pair nicely, but not be the sole machine in your life.
Right... I think it will be the same price as the cheapest one.
I'm keeping the iMac but have been wanting a portable for a while
A tablet would really work for me as it wouldn't have to crunch too heavily
I don't like the White MacBook, I considered a BlackBook but they're still holding high value 2nd hand
Refurb MacBook Pro 13" are under £700
It depends what it does... Remember writing on the tablet is the hardest thing to understand. I mean once you hold the phone in the hand it's comfy to write on it. Holding the weight of the 10" device is hard to figure out... So they may be de-emphasisng that to try and encourage you to use it for content. That makes it more an alongside device than a replacement device.
hd video is also crunch heavy.
Would need a decent GPU though I doubt it'd get one in the first revision
it could have a dedicated h.264 chip for the heavy lifting. i think you'd probably push a device like this more than you think.
big question though... flash support?
No way. Not a chance.
I'm saying no
Safari & Click for Flash is great
what are they going to say though? the device can't handle it?
Another bag of hurt? ;)
agreed. but the web isn't quite ready for no flash. as much as i want it.
look at the mclaren launch.
They aren't going to mention it. Why would they want to include it? The daring fireball article the other day was right on.
Apple is making a point.
Since when has Apple been bothered what is ready?
Apart from people handing over cash
they are, but is anyone really listening? google are doing their thing because it suits them, not because of the iphone.
http://daringfireball.net/2010/01/apple_adobe_flash
Agreed
This fella's mic is awful
They don't want anyone to control a fundemental part of how the machine "works". That's why they don't want anything running in the background that they don't control.
i guess so. i just think if goes on sale without flash, on a screen size where people are used to seeing flash, it may not go down so well.
no cutomer expected flash on a phone, because it's never really been there. but on your lap it has.
Steve is providing you with the "experience" What happens in other peoples apps is their concern but flash runs in his app, Safari. And so it's a no-no.
YouTube works on the iPhone without Flash [mostly]
hmmm. you can make flash-like apps using the iphone sdk. i don't see the difference.
The head of a big web firm in the states made his firm redo their entire website because it didn't work on his iPhone.
see previous comment. it suits google for that to be the case.
The have an Adobe-less quality?
mclaren are arguably one of the biggest teams in one of the biggest sports... has a flash only site. mercedes are a massive car manufacturer... live streaming on monday, flash only.
iphone's lack of flash it hasn't made a big impact.
Flash is the piece of software that crashes the most on the mac. They won't let any add-ins into the space and it suits Apple very much to crush Flash Quicktime and Flash are huge competitors.
Quote from the Gizmodo live blog that I rather like, because it's rather similar to what I'm thinking: 'I hope Apple announces a tablet that’s really just 6 iPod touches glued together, bezels and all.' ;)
not true. the beta of flash CS5 will compile flash apps into an iphone native application. there is no longer a line.
i very much agree.
i just think they will be more fuss from consumers if the tablet doesn't support it.
I kinda hope it'll provoke the debate to replace Flash as the defacto choice
No but this is where things change I think. I think the tablet allows you to make a really nice interactive HTML5 page which has video and all the interaction and you want to make your site for the tablet work and then somebody says to you... Oh by the way we can do that for the web too.
*closed beta that is. but i believe there are apps approved and in the itunes store now, that were built using flash.
Speaking as a non-content creator
me too. we're in agreement on that. i just don't think it will.
google is more likely to do that via youtube.
And there are applications written in .NET on the iPhone too... By the time they are complied they aren't Flash or .NET anymore.
but they look like flash apps and they look like .net apps. which was my point.
I think Apple is able to add flash any time they like. But they won't include it and will cave if that's a problem.
should we be worried the apple store hasn't gone down?
But they are all games... If you want to write something that looks like a standard app it has to stop looking like flash... it has to look like a real app.
They aren't going to launch anything today I don't think
They will offer the SDK and show it and then launch in march. So get writing your content.
is that true?
I'm going prediction crazy because we'll have to stop predicting soon
I believe so. That's what the approval process is for.
BTW
Call of Duty: World at War Zombies & Rock Band get free versions
Has Engaget updated for anyone in a while
am more interested in "media in the cloud" and changes to podcasting, than i am about text.
Nope
Ah it just has... Sofa on the stage
Spoke too soon
their live blog refresh is terrible!
I meant write your app soz
ahh yeah. tis on the list... if it's awesome.
ooh stage pics: http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/01/apple-creation-0005-rm-eng.jpg

Picture of the stage from engadget
hehe. i'll leave that job to you lukeh :)
They need a Doohickey
camera for itouch pls xxx
Am using live updates here:
http://live.appleinsider.com/
My view is there will be actually no announcements about anything other than the tablet.
Can't see it till the next refresh
iLife update?
will twitter survive?
Well yes... I think it will be highly tied in. They won't be runable on the tablet but you'll be able to make a video thing and send it to your tablet.
its already suffering. so my bet is nope ;)
Nah, down by 6:59
leo has video??
no.
Leaked image?
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/ipad-png
yay i made it here in time. :) hello
leo is fab!
:D
Hands up everyone who believes that twit found a live feed from "someone else" just as Leo said he going to send some but can't get a signal
I think it'll have 'iLife Lite'
iPhoto, iTunes, iReader [type thing]
:)
too risky. what they turn the camera around? busted.
:)
Have seen it before, they rarely last the whole Keynote
Hi Lou
evening!
The video they are showing is the same thing looping.
That has to be about tha hardest room in the world to shut down given that it is full of hackers and geeks armed to the teeth with gadgets.
Leo has three phones and a laptop
i love how even the music they are playing is generating chat and discussion :)
I wonder if Woz will turn up with his Nexus one
do we all have the prediction thing going on?
or just me...
it must MEAN something :)
I hope steve jobs is going to announce when my dinner is going to be done
iBobDylan??
Interesting.
The times they are a changing
i've predicted nothing, so i can't play along.
Only this one http://sidepodcast.com/2010/01/15/friday-fun-song-title-squeeze/

Silence your phones :)
*did that years ago*
Normally they say, "silence your iPhones"
:D hehe maybe Bob Dylan is gonna come out, announce that everyone has actually be invited to a surprise concert that's sponsored by Apple and not an istale/ipad/isomething announcement :)
The guy on TWiT said that Dylan has a tour starting in March, Lou is totally onto something
Merlin is that guy.
I love Jason Chen saying: "Apple’s playing a live recording of a Dylan concert. Unless Dylan is backstage, complete with an audience, that is. You never know!"
Merlin has an awesome name... i hope he knows this.
http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/01/apple-creation-0033-rm-eng.jpg
Exciting photo is exciting.
He's Merlin Mann is wife is called Madeleine. Hence her twitter name MadMann :)
Even TWiT suffers from the 'B' word today
i (heart) this so much. lol
What is under the cloth making it bulge
leo sounds like he's about to take his first steps on the moon...
Here we go :)
Steve Jobs
http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/01/apple-creation-0039-rm-eng.jpg
And my dinner is done, just as it starts. Typical!

250million iPods?
how is this a store??
http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/01/apple-creation-0053-rm-eng.jpg
It's cool as..
Get the feeling they're talking about a new mobile device?
i have to go out, but i don't want to!
I hope so. My iphone contract expires next month!
"where were you when they unveiled the ipad, james?"
"out"
:)
It'll be bigger than a phone
But wait until June if you want one
I know. I'm going to have to stay. :)
Sound :(
I'm currently cleaning my iPod touch screen, so it looks decent when it becomes inadequet.

but very very practical
you want one? i NEEEED one.
Does imply no flash, doesn't it?
I love it so much :)
I entered a 'Guess the features' sweepstake to potentially win one.
don't jinx it ;)
Hey Steve: Tanto Cuanto?
really does.
Am I the only person that doesn';t want one?
10:15AM No flash here... the missing plugin icon is on screen.
from engadget.
Nick will think it's 'the suck', no doubt ;)
I dont want one.... no need for it....
obs clicked a story and there is a missing plugin error (is this flash? Does this mean that the iPad won’t have flash?)
Nope, I'm not particularly excited yet.
store is still up, it's not coming today.
I'm not particularly bothered about it, it just seems like a giant iPod to me.
That's what I'm thinking, I have my iPod and I have my laptop to do all this!
video doesn't look good here:
http://cache.gizmodo.com/assets/appletablet/appletabletb141.jpg
I can cope with the shame of having something that can fit in my pocket... *sigh*... :P
for me it seem all what the kindle isn't: full color, good resolution, real interactivity.
Can't get it to load

i said you shoulda taken the afternoon off.
I did, free one on my lovely iPod :P
oooooooh!
Awesome... I need this thing quite badly
i think this thing will flop.... depends if it is cheap and they open it up for the education market....

Why are people surprised it is called ipad?
Someone here knew

Fight you (nicely)
Technology is making a full circle. Things have been getting smaller and smaller, now they're getting bigger. In 10 years time we'll be back to supercomputers from the 50s :P
I'll give its dues, it is between smartphone and laptop.
Cos it blows as a name?
photos!!! omg! think about the photos!!! think of the possibilities of being able to carry an entire portfolio around with something as thin and accessible as that.. rather than a laptop... then again this could be the same with a laptop, only my laptop is rubbish.
it'll suceed because the iphone did. its essentially a bigger version, the market is there.
Lots of people saying here we go lots of exciting things coming.
The market being apple fans who buy anything apple
*looks at commentors*
urm.. I didnt just say that...
didn't know. now they only need to show someone using one of those star trek tablets in the iPad... ;-)
it's like have 12" records again.
i think it has loads of potential... it means so much more than just being a bigger iphone/ipod touch
hehe. if the tablet had come before the iphone then i don't think it would be successful.
The iPhone made the App Store successful
Still thinking GIANT IPOD is a better name.
In caps, to suit the giantness see.
We don't yet know the whole extent... Generally they tend to build

best thing about this device...?
if you spill wine on it, the keys won't get stuck.

it will still break though?
is not only that. it is opening a new market, the same way that the iphone installed the idea of touchscreen smartphones. is the dead of the B&W ebook, also...

Can I port my games/apps across?
agreed.
Any working audio?
Yes, apparently
"So all of the iPhone apps will run on this. In fact when you buy it, download all the apps you have right onto the iPad. Now if the developer spends some time modifying their app, they can take full advantage of this display."
Bet I wont be able to get any of my saved data off my ipod though

this needs the ability to multitask *crosses fingers*
These tech journos would make crappy spies

could you afford a kindle though?
What is it then?
It's a Giant iPod

but it may further my photography :P ehehe
Do I need to run and hide if I say it's just a big iPod and it doesn't look any different to other tablets?

Kindle vs iBooks
But it's Apple Gavin! ;)
wow.

lol iBooks .... I had one of those 6 years ago! (glad they are making use of their tm's though ...)
It looks like they are not taking people streaming too seriously when the guy in front of Leo has a canera in front of his face
I didn't mean it like that. I just don't see what makes it so different from the comments and stuff I have seen so far...
christine. our digital life is complete.
empty the bookshelves.
Embedded HD video in your morning newspaper?
I didn't mean anything by it either. Just recruiting people to the daily!
There's a Daily today? ;)
"We use the ePub format"
Tell me more, oh wait, you mean...
The video isn't an apple thing though is it? It would run on any tablet?

Who needs the MacBook Air now?
they've just killed that product line, right?
More than Six weeks away would be strange with this much buzz
Apparently, that was the Unibody process prototype/tester
sneaky.

That'll come with the prices
oh wait, i am being stupid.... iTab 3G (or whatever they have called it?!) will be released next year....

You sound eerily like the gameshow host from Slumdog Millionaire.
nothing
refresh. it's there.
i see it :)
If I'm honest, I'm a little disappointed. After an hour and a half, all we've seen is a glorified iPod Touch.
I didn't even look before... I'm getting page not found
Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrubbish.

Chose not to follow it. Does it have Flash support and can do proper multi-tasking?
Agreed. Nothing spectacular.
really? i books?
that alone just save us two walls of our house.

apple developer connection has gone down :)

ebooks. Whoopty-do. I'm glad they're using the epub format. And if they allow the kindle app to run on it I'll consider buying it when I'm in the market for an ebook reader.
Doesn't mean it's anything spectacular.
3G model shippinng in April
I'm not that impressed right now. I think a lot of people were hoping they weren't just going to make a big iPhone and it looks like thats exactly what they've done. The tech sites don't seem too impressed either.
fair enough.
to us, books were the very last bit of old media we owned. the last non-digital piece of the puzzle.
christine has been waiting on the kindle. amazon never delivered and now apple have.
The video is good
tough crowd.
you'll buy one anyway :)
For me, it's a better looking Netbook alternative, with more
I have not a single Apple product in my possession! I'm a Google Man me :-)
WiFi + 3G is $100 extra
http://www.apple.com/ipad/pricing/
$130 ;)
iPad petting Zoo
There has to be a business in that
$829 is a good price for me.. I said I'd pay £800 :)
i think the $499 would do for us. but we need one each!
So can this, or can this not, do multi-tasking?
And Steve Jobs claims it to be the "best browsing experience available," yet has no Flash support? Right...
64GB with 3G will be close to that, maybe £700/750
i would guess no.
but does it need to?
Seems a bit silly to omit that when it's netbook size and that's where its competition lies?
Yeah... Exactly... Flash is a terrible browsing experience.
One of which would need to be 3G for you, I'd imagine
$629
Nah, the competition are now hiding
Flash is an abomination. Absolutely terrible.
i can't say i've ever held up the touch and thought "damn the lack of multitasking".
that could easily change though.
Why would I need a 64GB rather than 16GB when I have a portable drive for my media?
It's bigger than a netbook, isn't it?
16gb is quite small, if you buy a lot of tv shows. lost in hd is flipping huge.
The only time that the iPhone annoys me with that is when I want to broadcast my live moving location while writing comments on Sidepodcast. I have to say it's not something that affects me very often :)
500GB portable hard drive, the size of a pack of cards
Why do you want a portable drive for your media?
About a gig per episode?
I have.
On the train trying to doohickey and tweet at the same time...
I am always running out of space on my 32Gb iPhone/
To have all of it in my bag
Does it have a USB port and can it mount portable drives? I'm kinda doubting it.
One of the biggest annoyances for the touch to me, I'm surprised they haven't tried to have a solution for the iPad
i have over 250GB of television, christine has more. that's before you count podcasts. what portable machine can deal with that?
I have an 80GB iPod Classic for everything that's not on my current favourites list
I can see myself using this - on the train for example I could use it as a light browser.
It has USB, mountable? Dunno
really? the browser doesn't close, just flick between the two.
Same here. A whole portable hard disk full!
yeah, you'll need a desktop to sync, i'm guessing.
would you sync your podcasts to the ipad though? i don't think i would... i suppose it depends when you listen to podcasts..
1TB portables are about £100
It's still a minor annoyance and quicker on my netbook...
Right... But my point is... I think the time is over where you are going to carry everything on your "one device". So we have to sync what we want to take with us and so we want the biggest device available. Not to take 2 devices.
Hmm... Podcasts would be for sitting down and not moving with this...
agreed.
The separate threads in safari don't multitask even. Letting alone Gav probably means a seperate app. If you switch page the other doesn't continue loading it freezes.
ooh, they didn't announce podcasts in the cloud.
but when you come back, new comments flow in?
Indeed. I use tweetdeck and safari...
new xcode is downloading... but it's in beta.
http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/9/2010/01/sizingup.jpg
Ooooh I was close.
Right. But say I have two windows open SPC and BBC news. I get to the station and I open both one after the other. I can't, while I'm waiting for BBC News to load read SPC. While I'm reading SPC BBC news isn't loading even though SPC isn't actually loading anything at the time. Although why this doesn't happen is beyond me as it's only one app.
Boo... They didn't want to dilute the message (hopes)
understood. i guess i just use mine in a different way.
"Just tap on the iTunes Store icon, and you can browse and buy music, TV shows, podcasts — or buy and rent movies — wirelessly, right from your iPad"
http://www.apple.com/ipad/features/
that isn't it. we already have that on the iphone.
i want podcast syncing to the cloud, ref: the lala buyout.
That'll take time, but will come I reckon
ahh, xcode is covered by NDA. if there's anything to learn, you'll have to signup.
3G has a black strip on the back, similar to the 1st gen iPhone [but smaller]
interesting, that was a leaked rumour too, correct?
Pass
I stopped reading them, it was getting too much
I think the most interesting thing about this whole announcement is that the CPU was made by Apple.
well, designed, at least.
PA Semi most likely
Apple bought them 18 months ago
For this reason
yeah. I was having trouble remembering the name.
I also remember folks saying with the most recent iPhone upgrade "why isn't it using a PA Semi chip? Why'd they buy the company?"
a conversation between mum and i
mum 'so... what's this new apple thing like? what was expected?'
me 'it's like my ipod touch... but much better... and bigger...'
mum 'i thought it was all about having small things these days? how much?'
me 'it's not as expensive as we thought..and have i mentioned how lovely it is to look at photos on?'
mum 'you're not having one...'
me 'oh.'
The main difference, for me, is that you are using it on wifi me on 3G. At home I use the laptop for web browsing (at the mo), and then when out and about at the slower speeds I want to use the time while I'm waiting for a page to load to look at something else.
I'm guessing £399 [8GB WiFi only ] - £699 [64GB WiFi + 3G]
I'll settle for a MacBook then, thanks Mum
i'm back from outside (twas cold) and about to look at what i missed, does the ipad multitask?
No
ehehe dad is well aware that for university the best thing for me to have is a macbook :) hehehe and if he doesn't know he's not been listening to me :)
Hmm. how annoying.
^^we don't know, yet.
Someone on TWiT said "No"
They were playing with 'em
Perfect
screen res: 1024 x 768
ahh, sorry.
engadget: There's no multitasking at all.
With a 1GB chip though, it'd be painful it they let it
oooo!!!!
i have to wait till the summer though :)
I imagine it can same as the iphone can, apple just need to allow for it. If it did I'd buy one no question ;)
Refurb Store or Educational discounts MUST be checked first
at the moment, i can't envisage needing it, but i'm sure i'm wrong on that front.
Need? Silly Man
Want is stronger ;)
really?
the only thing preventing you from buying a tablet is the lack of multitasking???
ok. i don't really want multitasking.
Oh, I thought you were talking about the iPad
Multitasking is nice, no biggie for me either
yep don't worry they will be. I may wait till i start at uni. I'll then be able to gain experience with mac's there, plus have a student card etc. (this is assuming i get into uni :) )
Apple usually do a buy a Mac, get a free iPod [which you can sell] before Uni's start
Multi tasking would have made me forget that I can't really afford to spend that much at the moment. Thats all, I will get one someday ;)
:)
well.. i'll be waiting for that then :)
While I think the latest Apple product is all very nice, but I am sure it will be expensive. I see they criticised the netbook, I only have praise for our MSI wind netbooks (my personal and the departmental ones) - cheaper than iPod Touch and way more useful (especially if you have a good Linux installed like Mint).
I'm suprised I'm being sensible with my money, very rarely happens.
agreed
I don't know what I'd use it for yet, but that's not important. Must have it now.
Now, how much do I want that iMac upgrade first?
Hmmm
Live timing App & Commenting on race days in front of the TV
one moment, need to mop up the drool......
Or watching Debrief sat on the sofa.
I have this thing called a "macbook pro" already for stuff like that.
I don't [iMac's in the study]
That's why I want one
HA!
http://twitpic.com/101vr1
Have I missed something?
Lots of jokes going around on twitter about the iPad. Wouldn't have said they was family friendly though...
Ahhhhhh niiiiiice....
That one is OK...
I think the punchline is the pic title which you won't see by clicking in doohickey
Aww crap. Forgot about that!
Yeah the caption is the funny part. Humour fail :(
Boooo.
not a fan?
You don't like the Giant iPod then?
It leaves so many questions. I don't know, I think I would have to wait for the 2nd generation.
I will admit my opinion on the iPad keeps changing. I need one to play with to form a proper opinion ;)
I'm just not sure I want this more than a Macbook
How do you watch your streaming TV with no flash?
looking in more detail. i'd like less frame, it seems excessive.
also there was discussion earlier about a usb connector. but it doesn't appear to have one unless you use the "camera" connector. and even then, you can only use it for cameras.
still want one though.
you can't, unless they support apple's streaming protocol.
(currently no-one appear too)
I guess the ammount of frame is because they've made it so thin and also ensures you don't do something by accident when you pick it up.
I find watching the video for it is a great way to make you want one. I got my friend to watch it and now they want one :)
hmmm. Nor can you video-chat.
Grrr. I can just see what will be coming in version 2. I hate that.
that is a pretty huge omission, i'll grant you.
iPlayer works just fine on the iPhone/iPod Touch. Other providers will make content available. Flash will become increasingly irrelevant - Apple ahead of the curve once again.
Too soon to think about 2nd Gen? ;)
gen 1 is still better than eeepc. however, i'm seeing flaws.
No, and that's the problem. We already know they were ready to put a camera in the ipod Touch.
Waiting for them is always the best plan if you can be patient!
am clearly missing something major here. the iphone does live streaming on iplayer??
Who watches live tv (except F1?)
sidepodcast live?
I could see a kangaroo-like applications for this at F1 events.
Just seems like a giant iPhone/iPod Touch, actually that is exactly what it is. That might work pretty well for a small portable device but the iPad is no more portable than a netbook really, can't see any reason to pick one over a netbook
giggles radio?
wouldn't that be something! ooh wow.
But you could support the Apple technology right?
for me = ibooks. i am desperate to remove the last pieces of old media from our lives.
indeed.
we could. but it's more expensive.
in fact, we probably will. but it's a lot and it'd have to be via a paid for app i would imagine.
For me... I have a laptop that I use exactly like I would like to use this device. Lots of surfing and media and not much "work"
Ah. Good point, shows how often I watch TV these days. It'll come though.
Why? (just don't know what is involved)
Would it be called Sidepadcast?
Radio at least... Not sure about tv
it doesn't do anything that i use my laptop for:
editing audio - nope
editing video - nope
editing photos - nope
however, the eeepc is used for:
commenting - yep
browsing - yep
skype - maybe?
#nothere
cant believe we didnt see that coming
it may have to be now!
seconded :)
:)
I'm wondering when Apple will release the following products:
iPed - a device that revolutionises the bicycle industy
iPid - a revolutionary device for the gadget freaks' bathroom
iPud - an insanely great dessert making device.
in fact the more i think about it. the ipad really replaces the touch, doesn't it?
If you do video, the ipad could be tethered as a monitor from the camera wired or perhaps even wireless.
not mine ;)
Sure I have a laptop that I mainly use like you use your eeepc. To be fair I have a strange use case in that I orignally bought my laptop around the time that the eees were taking off and used it as that. Now I am starting to use my laptop as a audio editing machine it often causes problems because Katherine still wants to use it like the eee. So this device is at the right moment.
You can already edit video on the iPhone - OK it's simple cutting the ends off stuff, but if iWork has been announced, how long will it take for other apps to appear. You can also edit photos on the iPhone with the Photoshop app (plus many others). Again, it's only a matter of time.
Nope, its not portable. I'd like to see the size of your pockets if you could fit that thing in them
that would depend on it supporting video in. it has the connection, but will it be enabled, or locked as "out only"?
can't really take it anywhere though. i wouldn't take the iPad with me like i do the ipod touch (really should the iTouch)
this is where i'm different. the ipod touch goes everywhere with me... in my laptop bag.
Ever tried to open a 17' Macbook Pro on an airplane....This will replace my leisure travel computing gear.
Mine follows me around in my handbag. I'd need to invest in a much bigger bag for that I'd say..... :P
i may be in the minority here.
When they get to the point of creating a normal Mac that is just a touchscreen I can see it being great, but this sorta half way house between a computer and a smartphone? Don't think its going to be the massive hit the iPhone has been
i see that, but it's the itunes store integration that appeals. a touch screen mac has no business model built in. we need the business model to convert the newspapers to the virtual world.
Well I want one. I know I'm biased, but this is a bigger deal than everything else Apple has produced in the last few years put together. Actually, that's what has happened - one of my colleagues said - "it's like they crossbred an iMac with an iPhone" He's right.
i don't agree with that at all. where are the imac ports? where is the imac os?
if anything "a big iphone" sums it up. they just made it bigger.
i do agree it's a very big deal though, but i see no imac.
Now things have calmed down a bit, can someone please explain in normal language to a complete layman, what has happened and why is it different to existing tablets?
I think believe you may have it entirely backwards. Expect to see this os replace OS X... That's still my view.
Yeah the content on iTunes it great, and if they can make iBooks as big as the music store? I'd love that, but most of that stuff easily enough on a computer, you couldn't on a phone/mp3 player thats why iTunes became a hit
first question. what do you call and existing tablet?
I think he means the look of the device - compare the backs for example.
I dunno. I'm vaguely aware of laptops with touchscreens instead of keyboards.
doesn't the iphone have the same back? or maybe the first gen?
I'd go and watch the video of Steve Ballmer demonstrating the new HP tablet and then watch the video over at apple.com.
without something to compare to, that's a tough ask.
i like the device, because it's pretty much what i was hoping it would be. and i can see it fitting a multitude of uses.
1st gen did ish. Looks more like the back of the air to me?
Right. But surely this one must have x number of innovations otherwise people wouldn't be falling all over it
It's a giant iPhone. I did not see anything that said that it was anything more than that. Biggest addition is that Apple are adding an ebook store
highlights:
- price waaay lower than expected
- screen ideal size, doesn't look compromised
- all iphone apps compatible (when does that ever happen)
- ibooks
- 3g is optional
lowlights:
- no camera
- almost zero connectivity
- total lock in
The fact thats it is an apple product has something to do with it ;)
they made a product i've been wanting for a year. and mostly they made it right. i bitched my way through the last keynote, but i really thought this hit the spot.
physical connectivity is that what you mean? eg. Firewire etc?
This really is going to be the year of tablet isn't it? 9 Upcoming Tablet Alternatives to the Apple iPad
Perhaps. I'm trying not to be too cynical :-)
yup. usb / firewire / displayport
The games are scaled up and look like it. That doesn't mean they're not entirely playable -- Need for Speed actually controlled better with the larger screen; tilting the iPad had less of an effect on the screen than doing the same on the iPhone's comparatively tiny display, meaning we were able to focus on the action while moving the screen around (something many iPhone games simply don't do as well).
Boo, and yay. Mixed feelings. :(
Just looking on Engadget, zero multi-tasking on the iPad
Understood, thanks. I can certainly see a market for it.
honestly? my guess is they've done that to aid the transition from iphone apps to ipad apps. from a coding perspective i believe it's the right thing to do.
At the moment ;)
bingo.
The thing is that like what happened with the iPhone / iTouch when it first came out the Apple applications show the potential. It's the individual applications that have been written by 3rd Parties that really show the full amazing abilities. Nothing we've seen written by a third party has had more than 2 weeks of dev time. When we see people really playing with this space it will be very interesting me thinks.
that's assuming though, that nobody touches a thing. there are 60 days to make tweeks.
you would want a camera.... on something that big? how would you hold it?
So it's acceptable that they screw day one buyers just so they can sell them the second gen version?
a video camera facing you. for skype chats, like giggle on the parade lap.
It'll be a software upgrade.
It is possible it will be in OS 4.0 but there is no way of knowing.
it's not impossible that it couldn't be a firmware update.
Indeed. I would have really liked that.
But Joystiq says they've had a hands on with the games?
http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/27/apple-ipad-hands-on-preview/
ahh yes that would be good. i had visions of a camera like on the iphone.. with people trying to take nice photos with this huge thing :D
We'll have iWork for iPad from day one (and I would expect integration with iwork.com too). Other apps will be adapted too, both from Apple and other developers. That the existing iPhone apps work on it is an added bonus and will help bridge the gap, but there is so much potential there.
They played with iPhone games scaled up. Everyone will optimize for iPad (most)
yep. all apps that work on the iphone and ipod touch today. work on the ipad today. there's nothing to say all the developers have to take a nap until the hardware hits the shelves.
guess what i'm doing?
No, but we all know that Apple like to have you upgrading good and often to keep the money rolling it
:)
Yeah, they will charge for the upgrade ;)
software upgrade that is.
all i / we're saying, is that you're highlighting a valid flaw. but not one that is an insurmountable problem.
Yeah fair enough, just pointing out that you all might be getting caught up in the Apple hype is all :p
nice size comparison: http://cache0.techcrunch.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/a4.jpg
(from http://www.techcrunch.com/2010/01/27/holding-ipad-pictures/)
always do. however, sidepodcast wouldn't be here if we didn't.
ooh, kindle compares favourably there. hadn't considered that.
the lack of a front facing camera however, is somewhat. as i'm not planning on drilling my own hole :)
The original iPhone can run iPhone OS 3.0.
It's not Apple's fault that there are people out there who just have to buy everything they produce. I waited 2 years before buying an iPhone. I have a 3GS and expect to keep it for at least 18 months regardless of any new hardware release. The same is true of my Macbook Pro - I want a new one (15" anti-glare display), but will keep using the one I have for now because it still works just fine.
It's not just Apple either - My DSLRs are nearly 3 and 6 years old. I don't plan on replacing either of them any time soon.
Indeed. Mashable have done a post with 4 reasons the Kindle is dead and 4 reasons it’s not (when compared with the iPad) http://mashable.com/2010/01/27/kindle-dead-ipad/
ooh, good post.
We'll have to wait and see what happens regarding software upgrade fees as the accounting rule changed recently.
I kinda like this article about what the ipad will mean for photographers.
That's a good article. I'd love to see an e-ink based version of an iPad
"The tablet will save the newspaper, magazine and book publishing businesses. All of these industries have been having tough times."
quite the statement, and from a photo site too.
Wow. So the predictions were pretty much right on the money.
And it's... VERY cheap.
Just a thought - if they're selling it at $499 in the US, it'll probably go for GBP 499 in the UK. At least that's what I remember them doing with the iPhone.
Sorry I just choked on a sherbert lemon, did you say £499?
Yup. I've observed that they do ridiculous mark-ups with prices in the UK.
but thats an amazing price. I want one!!
seen on Twitter.... the Irish version will be called the Pad-i
*runs from the Irish*
Checking the O2 website:
So the iPad would have to be pricier than that, right?
shhh dont spoil it ;)
:P :D
ipad doesn't do voicemail or voicecalls.
(except via skype)
Hmmm. Fair point.
But I'd still find it very odd, considering the size and capability of the thing. This is no ordinary netbook after all...
it's the first "reasonably priced" apple hardware i've ever set eyes on.
I think the price is a bit of a con. Everyone was predicting $799 to $999 and that is exactly where the top one is. All they have done is make two low spec models that cost less but lack many of the features of the top model.
But if people are willing to buy the low-spec model, that means something, right?
but we don't need those features?
Yes but what it doesn't mean is what a lot of people are claiming that it is massively cheaper than expected. The one that does what they all want it precisely where they were predicting.
I am sure some people will love the base model but I don't understand Leo and co going on about how low the price is when the spec they were predicting is not at that price and into the bargain the thing doesn't multi-task so it doesn't even meet the spec predicted
none of the models multitaks (yet) and 16gb / wifi model is perfect for our needs.
i've no intention of buying a more expensive model, but i think alex might be.
What are you going to use it for?
replace the eeepc. so general browsing mainly. also for the f1 timing app. it might be useful during a live show in some capacity.
can see us needing once each at some point, but no need for 3g, and no huge need for 64gb of storage.
Makes sense
"One of the selling points of the device, iBooks, which allows users to access an array of e-books and digital textbooks, is not listed as a feature on the iPad page on Apple Australia's website.
This indicates it will not be available to Australian users when the device is launched here in March. A note on the US site says iBooks is "available in the U.S. only"."

I really don't understand why people are going on about multitasking. What reason do you have for multitasking?
As always, FAILblog sums up perfectly how silly the name is:
http://failblog.org/2010/01/27/name-fail-photoshop-win/
grrr
I mean if you have a silly name then a thing can never sell right? Shhh don't mention the wii ;)
in good news, the kindle publishing thingy is now open to non-US authors. Hint hint.
ooooh. I better get going on that. I need to do the formatting for it.
Hehe good point. There is also the iPod/iPad similarity...
I can see a use for it as a light browser to replace my netbook. I have a feeling that this is the start of something completely new, even if this device doesn't seem that different.
everyone who I've heard interviewed or have read has said a) when you hold it you are completely sold on it. It just makes perfect sense and b) it's only $100 more than a kindle and makes the kindle look like it's from the stone age.
The screen is much bigger and there's no buttons too.
I had a silly thought - I use iPod Socks to protect my iTouch, and I wonder how big you would have to make one to fit the iPad? :D
all the comparisons with the kindle annoy me because I don't care that the kindle doesn't do anything else, I bought it to read books and it does that perfectly without hurting my eyes, and the battery lasts for 10 days, which suits me far more than 10 hours.
I'm not trying to say that you're wrong with the kindle at all. But to my mind apple won't be selling it as "look I know it can't do as much as your laptop but it is cheaper by $x" they'll be selling it the other way. It's the most expensive ebook reader sure, but can your ebook reader do this as well.
Yes, but:
- The iPad is only a little more expensive and does loads more things
- The Kindle dropped the ball by not releasing internationally soon enough and not making a colour version...
This could be the most compelling handheld rivalry since Nintendo Game Boy vs. Sega Game Gear. And FWIW, the monochrome Game Boy won over the coloured Game Gear...
they had more games. Apple is betting the same way they have more apps. But do they have more books?
Also I remember both the Lynx and the Atari having poor screens compared to the Gameboy...
It depends which publishers they can hook up with.
And the thing is, how many people will buy the iPad for the apps rather than the books?
But the Game Gear had better graphics, right?
I don't remember. We got a Gameboy and it was decent enough not to worry about the GG...
I don't read colour books?
I just don't get it because to me they appeal to completely different markets.
Magazines? Periodicals? Most of the books I read have photo plates in the middle. The iPad will have all of this and have video content, etc...
I don't read a lot of those to be honest. I read Time for a couple of weeks on the Kindle and found it to be fine but I'm not regularly a Time reader so when my free trial run out I stopped getting it. I guess I'm definitely not in their target market because I don't care that it doesn't do all the other things, I like having it do one thing and have it do it really well.
There's nothing wrong with that at all.
I'm confused, does the colour screen still work the same kind of way as the kindle screen? Glare free?
Depends if jealous people are watching you use it ;)
the Kindle is getting apps though. Even me, kindle-fan, loled at that one.
the iPad thing looks nice, it does some cool things, but I can't see what is all the fuss about. The Apple boys are great in marketing, they managed to create some serious hype. But I see money spent for this a money spent for something one does not really need. Cool thing to have, but I sure can survive with laptop and phone combo
P.S. I am a Mac person
I laughed that even Gizmodo said "My god, am I underwhelmed by the iPad. This is as inessential a product as I’ve ever seen, but beyond that, it has some absolutely backbreaking failures that will make me judge anyone who buys one."
Why does it have to be essential though?
It doesn't. Obviously it isn't! But I'm not sure it would really fill a hole in my life. It's not small enough to go in my handbag. I don't really try to do things on a computer while I'm out and about that I can't do with my phone.
It definitely doesn't. I'm just angry at the iPad because since it was announced I have had four people I know tell me I'm "stupid" for buying a Kindle and I don't like being called stupid :(
Your Kindle looks a lot more portable though?
Boooo to them. You shouldn't be judged on your own purchases, how stupid of them rather than you!
It's not stupid to have been reading ebooks for months and months whilst the rest of us are still carrying around stoopid paper books.
it reminds me of 2002 when I was the first person I knew to buy a digital camera and a few months later the first camera phone came out in NZ and everyone was like 'don't you feel dumb that you bought a camera when you could have had a phone and a camera?'
My love affair with single-function devices started young :D
Amen to that!
paying less for something you need/want vs. paying paying more something that does more things that you may like t have but do not really need .... sounds like right choice to me
found this:
Big story here is not iPad but the A4. Maybe the world's best mobile CPU http://daringfireball.net/2010/01/ipad_big_picture
That is a cool idea. Crosswords etc...
When was an iPod or a netbook essential? I can certainly live without them or find alternatives...
You are not stupid at all for buying a Kindle. You're an early adopter of a new technology medium and helping establish a system for e-books we all want.
I can't say I'm on the e-books side of the fence *hides*
A camera phone will never beat a camera though - too many compromises!
and I'd still rather have a netbook than either of them, so I can blog on the move. everyone's different.
I do like my blog-posts-on-the-train-home ;)
But you could do that on an iPad I reckon...
oh no!
"iBookstore will be available in the US at launch."
http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/28/ipad-ibooks-will-be-us-only/
I think someone mentioned that earlier. I suppose it should not be a surprise, as that's how these things work, isn't it? US first.
Publishers must have some killer DRM if both the Kindle and the iPad are restricted like this...
There is still no video option in the Danish iTunes though :(
Interesting sentiment, this:

Hello all, sent home from work due to cold. Before I go to bed with chocolate milk my favourite tweets about the iPad:
LouisTrapani: The only thing missing from the Apple iPad are the words "Don't Panic" in large friendly letters on it
daraobriain: My nagging doubt about the iPad. The minute you got one, you'd hold it to your ear and shout "I'M ON THE TRAIN" like Dom Joly
Is that true? I am not sure what 'we' wanted...
In fact, I almost think that Apple only made this product because of all the rumours!
I don't think that's true. Even if it's not exactly what people wanted, it's a step along the road to the next generation of devices. People have been getting there, but someone like Apple can push it along.
I said something like that earlier.
I think what is exciting here is not the product, but the potential. Where will this lead? Will we all use tablets? Will we even need mice and keyboards, or will we just swipe, tap and gesture?
I think in a couple of iterations this will become the first true cloud computer...
what we've got, is what i wanted. if that helps?
apple have been working on this for a decade or more.
One decade ;)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_a0t2Eb7YJk
or more :)
Yes it does. I think that people will like it once they try it.
I didn't know that - I have only been made aware of it since BOL/TWiT started talking about it...
Someone suggested yesterday that the only reason th Macbook Air existed was prototype testing for the iPad
Hmmm possibly. The air always came across as particularly pointless....
Isn't the Air a kinda-Netbook?
The price of it is just obscene though! Too much for it to be a real option.
Dont say that here, there are 3 in my office! Thats half the mac population!
You what?? It's completely not an office computer!
A lightweight laptop for a lightweight workday? ;)
:D
i disagree. perfect for meetings.
We do have a lot of meetings here.
ha!
I don't understand what it gives you extra over something else cheaper though?
i imagine it takes up less room in the Ferrari or porsche :P
Well yes, you are short of boot space ;)
give me an example of something else cheaper?
have just been having an offline discussion to the same effect. where's the competition? there is no google tablet, as far as i can see, there's a kindle. and that's hopeless in meetings.
Maybe you have different sorts of meetings to me? I'm not sure what a bog standard pc can't achieve.
well, a pen and paper are fine for for taking notes too.
I thought you meant using it for prezzo's?
The restaurant?
*Presentations
keynote could be useful, but was thinking a room full of people with access to a shared calendar using that awesome page turning interface would be rather fab.
the big sell for me, is you can just flip the device over and show people stuff. laptops are really awkward in that sense.
it'll be interesting to see what apps spring up from developers. the innovation will come from there.
So we need one each? You have more money than I.
it's cheaper than most laptops?
But it couldn't replace your laptop really. Wouldn't you need both?
Stephen Fry on the iPad: http://www.stephenfry.com/2010/01/28/ipad-about/
He shares a similar view to me that this is the start of something completely new - albeit he puts it much more eloquently ;)
in a lot of cases, yup.
what percentage of a laptops functionality does the average HR department use? 10% of its capabilities, maybe less?
If it hasn't been mentioned already, you MUST search YouTube for MADtv's sketch about the iPad - 18 months before the real one was released!
That has been there for 18 months and no-one at Apple knew about it?
