Sunday night means NFL football. The kind where feet only occasionally touch the ball. The American kind.

Baltimore Ravens cheerleader

Join us for live commenting of this game between the New York Jets and the Baltimore Ravens being played in Baltimore, Maryland. In the UK watch on Channel 4 at 01:20 (GMT+1), 20:20 (EST).

The coach for the Jets, Rex Ryan, worked his way up the ranks in 10 years to assistant head coach at the Baltimore Ravens, but was passed over for the head coaching job there. The current Ravens head coach, John Harbaugh, is the one that got the job instead. Obviously both teams feel they have something to prove.

And most recently both teams have been in their American Football Conference (AFC) playoffs, but neither have been to Superbowl since 2000.

New York Jets

Record: 2 wins, 1 loss. Players to watch: Quarterback Mark Sanchez, Darrelle Revis on defense

The Jets rely on their passing game now, which is a massive shift from their so-called "ground and pound" focus on running the ball just 2 seasons ago. QB Mark Sanchez is coming into his own, and that has a lot to do with the change in strategy.

Head coach Rex Ryan may want to keep in mind what Joe Namath recently said about his coaching style after a recent 34-24 loss to the Oakland Raiders,

"The brash third-year boss (Ryan) was called out after the defeat by no less than franchise icon Joe Namath, who implied that an overly talkative culture bred by Ryan was responsible for what Namath perceived as a lack of proper preparation, because the Jets players think they're better than they actually are." Of course Rex Ryan disagrees with him. Read their quotes here.

Baltimore Ravens

Record: 2 wins, 1 loss. Players to watch: Quarterback Joe Flacco, Running Backs LaDainian Tomlinson and Ray Rice, Ed Reed and Ray Lewis on defense.

The Ravens had a big win last week against St. Louis and have won most of the match-ups with the Jets. They are the favorite to win this one, but not by much, and not if boisterous Rex Ryan and the Jets have anything to say about it.

As they used to say in the pre-game show, are you ready for some football?

We are seeing Devon Hester setting another punt return record. Why don't punting and kicking teams just ignore every other Chicago player?

AS PREDICTED in this post, Ed Reed, defensive tackle, comes up with the sack that leads to a fumble and then Ravens TD.

But it's being reviewed at the moment.

    Just like racing drivers

Really? I hadn't noticed or heard of this - when and where do they do that?

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 00:54

Really? I hadn't noticed or heard of this - when and where do they do that?

It happens a lot and has done for years. They really don't talk about it any more but a lot of drivers in post race interviews over the years have said they either tracked another driver's position on the big screens or have talked about incidents on a different part of the track that they saw.

You also see it in major athletics events in distance races. As the leader runs toward the finish line you will see his head look up at a screen to see what is happening behind him

  • Kai03/10/2011 at 00:55

We'll have to see if that holds true tonight. Right now they're doing better, but it's early days.

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 01:15

I have not watched American football for years. I did not know it was on C4. Is that new to this year? (I know they showed it many years back.)

It went back to C4 last year. I always thought teams in dark kits did well. Denver won nothing in their pale orange colour but won two superbowls when the switched to dark blue. THe Buccaneers were a complete joke in their orangey/peach colour but suddently became a good team when they switched to dark cherry red

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 01:16

We'll have to see if that holds true tonight. Right now they're doing better, but it's early days.

And both teams are making so many mistakes anything can happen.

C4 just said Jets total offence ( the total distance they have moved the ball forward) is minus 4 yards

It is a safe bet all the teams will have the same rules because they are all franchises rather than independent clubs. They don't even get to sell their own merchandise. All the teams share merchandise sales

I think we need to find an early baseball play off game to live comment since they started a couple of days ago

  • Kai03/10/2011 at 01:33

    Ravens 20

    Jets 7

if we can hang on until i have enough to by an mlb pass, i'd like to try the app and apple tv integration.

  • Mr C03/10/2011 at 01:34

    *buy, not by.

  • Sebastian X03/10/2011 at 01:35

Maybe NY should consider a QB who can catch.

The season is almost over. I think you should wait till next season before you part with cash. A play off game would let you get a grasp of the game so the stuff you are paying for will make more sense

  • Kai03/10/2011 at 01:37

The season is almost over. I think you should wait till next season before you part with cash. A play off game would let you get a grasp of the game so the stuff you are paying for will make more sense

yeah we are into playoffs for baseball now, 'world' series in October.

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 01:37

Maybe NY should consider a QB who can catch.

There is one at Baylor who can do that. There was a very odd college game a few weeks ago that went crazy on twitter. The final score was a long pass CAUGHT by the QB

  • Kai03/10/2011 at 01:38

There is one at Baylor who can do that. There was a very odd college game a few weeks ago that went crazy on twitter. The final score was a long pass CAUGHT by the QB

    wow. Missed that.

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 01:38

    Not so subtle facemask penalty.

Finally the Jets make a play and STILL lose yaedage :)

  • Kai03/10/2011 at 01:38

Those face masks make great handles. Shame you can't use them. ;)

    perfect, lets do that then.

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 01:39

    wow. Missed that.

I think it was Declan Brennan from RLM who was tweeting it and I started searching for Baylor and some three letter college. The game finished 50-47 or something ludicrous

  • Sebastian X03/10/2011 at 01:39

There is one at Baylor who can do that. There was a very odd college game a few weeks ago that went crazy on twitter. The final score was a long pass CAUGHT by the QB

Well if the QB threw it very high and ran very fast...

  • Kai03/10/2011 at 01:40

Well if the QB threw it very high and ran very fast...

    ha!

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 01:40

    perfect, lets do that then.

I will have a look at the schedule and see if there is an early game.

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 01:41

Well if the QB threw it very high and ran very fast...

    :D

I have no idea who threw it

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 01:43

It was TCU at Baylor and finished 48-50

  • Kai03/10/2011 at 01:43

If a pass is made across the middle and no one's there to catch it, is it still a great pass?

  • Kai03/10/2011 at 01:44

It was TCU at Baylor and finished 48-50

    college games can be whacko.

  • Sebastian X03/10/2011 at 01:46

I have just put a couple of quid on NY winning at 9/1. Well 10 on Betfair so if NY do win I will get £18 - 5% = £17.10 plus stake back.

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 01:47

That is optimistic but given the effect Kai and I have on these games anything is possible

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 01:49

Best way to get a broken nose is to go face first for the line

  • Kai03/10/2011 at 01:49

That is optimistic but given the effect Kai and I have on these games anything is possible

    hehe

The kicking jinx has yet to take full effect, it seems.

  • Kai03/10/2011 at 01:50

Best way to get a broken nose is to go face first for the line

    that's definitely one of them.

I claim credit for the punt being returned for a TD

  • Kai03/10/2011 at 01:50

I claim credit for the punt being returned for a TD

    credit given.

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 01:51

Another case where a player was left to go straight at the QB

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 01:51

I think his arm was back but it was not coming forward

  • Kai03/10/2011 at 01:51

  • Kai03/10/2011 at 01:55

oh, take the camera off Ryan for the kids' sake.

  • Kai03/10/2011 at 01:56

I don't see his arm going forward. Up and loaded, but not forward.

  • Sebastian X03/10/2011 at 01:56

What is the rule in question here?

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 01:56

    Jets 7

    Ravens 27

  • Kai03/10/2011 at 01:56

    Ravens 27

    Jets 7

  • Kai03/10/2011 at 01:57

    D'Brickashaw

    What a name.

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 01:57

What is the rule in question here?

If the QB's arm is moving forward when he is hit the rule is an incomplete pass. If it is not then it is a fumble and the opposition can pick the ball up and score

  • Sebastian X03/10/2011 at 01:58

    Thanks.

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 01:58

    What a name.

There are loads of them in American sports. Who named anyone Coco Crisp. Breakfast cereal yes. Baseball player no

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 01:58

2 blitzers free to the QB

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 02:01

    yes

I have heard them lots before but they are much funnier tonight. Mind you so is the game

  • Kai03/10/2011 at 02:02

    NBC?

    Chris Collinsworth and Al Michaels

I have heard them lots before but they are much funnier tonight. Mind you so is the game

True. They seem to be loosened up tonight. :)

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 02:02

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 02:04

    Interception TD

What was Flacco thinking? He steps past the guys heading for him then just gave the ball away

  • Sebastian X03/10/2011 at 02:04

    The comeback begins.

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 02:06

    Jets 14

    Ravens 27

No way am I going to sleep (deliberately) at half time in this game. Anything could happen

I have a meeting tomorrow morning and I should turn in at half time.

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 02:07

how are they putting graphics on the field under the players?

Only on TV. They are not really there

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 02:07

I have a meeting tomorrow morning and I should turn in at half time.

    Should is different to will

  • Mr C03/10/2011 at 02:07

Only on TV. They are not really there

    yeah... but how?

  • Kai03/10/2011 at 02:08

    yeah... but how?

umm... I've never thought about how. Good question!

  • Kai03/10/2011 at 02:08

    Should is different to will

you caught that, of course. ;)

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 02:08

    yeah... but how?

I have no idea. They have been doing it for years and are almost perfect now. THey used to be flickery and patchy

  • Kai03/10/2011 at 02:08

how are they putting graphics on the field under the players?

    which ones?

  • Mr C03/10/2011 at 02:09

    which ones?

like a pointy triangle. they players run over it.

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 02:09

    which ones?

I assume the blue and yellow lines

  • Mr C03/10/2011 at 02:09

I assume the blue and yellow lines

it's a blue thing that says 1st and 10 or something.

  • Mr C03/10/2011 at 02:10

it's a blue thing that says 1st and 10 or something.

for the jets it's white and green.

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 02:10

    Offside

    Penalty

  • Kai03/10/2011 at 02:10

it's a blue thing that says 1st and 10 or something.

    oh yes.

They do it in hockey games, too, where they temporarily illustrate an offside line and stuff like that.

  • Mr C03/10/2011 at 02:10

it's a blue thing that says 1st and 10 or something.

    1st and 5, now.

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 02:11

  • Kai03/10/2011 at 02:11

Just noticed there is no blue line

    yeah, me too.

  • Kai03/10/2011 at 02:11

    1st and 5, now.

I never really looked at it so much before. It's so well done, now. wow.

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 02:11

    1st and 5, now.

No idea how they do that

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 02:12

I never really looked at it so much before. It's so well done, now. wow.

I looked at it when they first did it and thought it was clever but I have never seen an explanation for it. To be fair I have never looked for one

  • Mr C03/10/2011 at 02:13

I never really looked at it so much before. It's so well done, now. wow.

it would be hard to get that right in post production. i'm floored they can do that live. it's perfect in HD too.

they seem to be referring to the yellow line which usually shows the tv audience the line of scrimmage - where they're starting, but I will assume the tech is the same or similar.

if they can do it in nfl with players and all there legs, drawing a racing line on an f1 track must be simple.

if they can do it in nfl with players and all there legs, drawing a racing line on an f1 track must be simple.

Should be. Although the NFL only have to map 100 yards by however wide the field is rather than several miles of track

    Flacco 8 of 27

Nice play getting to the ball

  • Kai03/10/2011 at 02:51

    Drat.

    :)

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 02:52

  • Kai03/10/2011 at 02:58

Odds are you will never see another game anything like this one

yeah, this is a sloppy mess that is really fun and unpredictable with momentum changing constantly.

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 02:58

The superbowl counts as a real game

  • Mr C03/10/2011 at 02:58

    it seemed more surreal :)

  • Kai03/10/2011 at 02:58

Mr C, make sure to check out Guille's G+ photos. F1 Minute got some serious altitude. :)

  • Sebastian X03/10/2011 at 03:01

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 03:14

Flacco has not completed a pass since the first quarter and his team has twice as many points as the opposition. Weird game

16 out of 55 between them

  • paul03/10/2011 at 03:21

16 out of 55 between them

    Oh!

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 03:21

Mike Carlson suggests the Jets should go to a single wing and not use a QB at all

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 03:22

16 out of 55 between them

    Oh!

    17/55. I unfairly maligned them

  • Kai03/10/2011 at 03:22

Well, I'd love to stay up but I've got to get some sleep. What a crazy game.

I've really enjoyed this. Thank you, Mr C and everyone who's here. :) Thanks for taking care of the post, Steven.

    Good night all.

    see you!

  • Kai03/10/2011 at 03:24

yeah, as Flacco gets a completion. ;)

I'll catch up tomorrow with these comments. :)

    Fumble

    Jets get the ball

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 03:29

    So far

    7 turnovers

    16 penalties

    5 returns for touchdowns

    Crazy game

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 03:30

Jets punt the ball away after failing to get a first down

  • paul03/10/2011 at 03:42

Jets really have nothing in offense

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 03:42

Jets really have nothing in offense

They have been awful. The Ravens offence has been bad too to be fair

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 03:46

51 points in the game and only one touchdown scored by sensible conventional means

The teams are just swapping punts now as the game fizzles out

  • paul03/10/2011 at 03:46

The teams are just swapping punts now as the game fizzles out

    Yep looks all over

  • Sebastian X03/10/2011 at 03:48

New York really need to get a move on.

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 03:49

New York really need to get a move on.

Never mind you will get even better odds next week before the Patriots kill them

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 03:50

Jets 3 and out again. Didn't make a yard again

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 03:51

Jets 3 and out again. Didn't make a yard again

oops. Went for it on 4th down too. Sanchez hit his receiver on the foot with the ball.

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 03:52

Ravens just using up the clock with kneel downs. Wonder how they can screw that up

  • Sebastian X03/10/2011 at 03:52

I know I have lost my money but I think it was a decent value bet. American football is like snooker. Bet consistantly on the outsider, it will pay in the long run.

The way the game was going it wasn't a stupid bet. Anything could have happened in this game

  • paul03/10/2011 at 03:53

Well there you go. I better get back to my cleaning.

  • Steven Roy03/10/2011 at 03:54

    Game over

    Jets 17

    Ravens 34

  • Mr C03/10/2011 at 04:45

have made a minor change to the homepage. with so many live threads this weekend, they were pushing some of the newer content off the page, before people have had chance to read them.

so i've split out live threads into their own box on the sidebar.

at the moment the info is tiny and lost, but imagine it bigger and styled nicely and in a more prominent position. clearly needs more work, just wanted to point out the change.
