Sunday night means NFL football. The kind where feet only occasionally touch the ball. The American kind.

Baltimore Ravens cheerleader
Join us for live commenting of this game between the New York Jets and the Baltimore Ravens being played in Baltimore, Maryland. In the UK watch on Channel 4 at 01:20 (GMT+1), 20:20 (EST).
The coach for the Jets, Rex Ryan, worked his way up the ranks in 10 years to assistant head coach at the Baltimore Ravens, but was passed over for the head coaching job there. The current Ravens head coach, John Harbaugh, is the one that got the job instead. Obviously both teams feel they have something to prove.
And most recently both teams have been in their American Football Conference (AFC) playoffs, but neither have been to Superbowl since 2000.
New York Jets
Record: 2 wins, 1 loss. Players to watch: Quarterback Mark Sanchez, Darrelle Revis on defense
The Jets rely on their passing game now, which is a massive shift from their so-called "ground and pound" focus on running the ball just 2 seasons ago. QB Mark Sanchez is coming into his own, and that has a lot to do with the change in strategy.
Head coach Rex Ryan may want to keep in mind what Joe Namath recently said about his coaching style after a recent 34-24 loss to the Oakland Raiders,
"The brash third-year boss (Ryan) was called out after the defeat by no less than franchise icon Joe Namath, who implied that an overly talkative culture bred by Ryan was responsible for what Namath perceived as a lack of proper preparation, because the Jets players think they're better than they actually are." Of course Rex Ryan disagrees with him. Read their quotes here.
Baltimore Ravens
Record: 2 wins, 1 loss. Players to watch: Quarterback Joe Flacco, Running Backs LaDainian Tomlinson and Ray Rice, Ed Reed and Ray Lewis on defense.
The Ravens had a big win last week against St. Louis and have won most of the match-ups with the Jets. They are the favorite to win this one, but not by much, and not if boisterous Rex Ryan and the Jets have anything to say about it.
As they used to say in the pre-game show, are you ready for some football?
welcome to... err... nfl.
:)
Thank you
Thank you so much for letting us do this!! I'm so excited and happy to be on SPC for it. I know you don't have to at all, so glad you did. :)
How do you make that heart again?
anytime. we might need a tiny bit more warning for the next game, but am happy to join in the fun.
Always knew you were heartless
I planned to discuss it after the Indycar then I forgot. I blame the exciting finish
hehe
#blameSteven
We are seeing Devon Hester setting another punt return record. Why don't punting and kicking teams just ignore every other Chicago player?
I can't even take credit for the post
Looks like NFL kick off times are as reliable as NASA
Do you guys have a favorite tonight?
Not really.
I hope Journeyer finds us here.
You?
Tweet him
What am I saying? You just headpinged him
:)
I don't think he's on twitter.
JOURNEYER!!!!!!!
It was discussed on Friday I thought
it was, but it wasn't for sure.
He browses though
Wish I could watch. It'll be good when we have those few weeks with timezone offset of 4 hours not 5.
I don't really have a favorite. I like Mark Sanchez and I'd love to see the Jets do well, but I don't like Rex Ryan.
Makes a difference
I don't know much about the Ravens outside of what I wrote today.
I clicked the button and tweeted the post so he will see that if he is browsing
When Marino was playing the Dolphins were one of the teams I liked and the Jets always gave them problems so I was never a fan
and I tweeted it and put it on G+. Along with the headping, there's no more we can do. :)
Yes, that was a dilemma in my house. Dad was a big Dolphins fan but we all liked New York teams, too.
I see everyone is wearing pink again this year. Weird site all those big guys thumping each other while wearing pink
:)
I shared it with the hordes that follow my Gplus too
hehe
Yeah, I'm connected to like 50+ people I don't know now...or don't know that I know (real names will be new to me).
I have a constant stream of e-mail notifications. I don't know why I think more about people on G plus when I just ignore twitter followers genreally
Both teams seem pretty antsy. Takes some time for the nerves to settle.
Not unusual to go 3 and out in the first couple of series
ooh. Crunch.
Looked like a good tackle to me but the ref signalled holding
What a mess
Holy crap!
replay, please
kai, have added a piccy hope it's okay.
AS PREDICTED in this post, Ed Reed, defensive tackle, comes up with the sack that leads to a fumble and then Ravens TD.
But it's being reviewed at the moment.
Looked like no-one picked up the guy heading for the QB. Someone dropped an assignment there
You got it spot on
Yes, of course!
If that pic doesn't say American football, nothing will. :)
Thank you!
Looks okay to me
I just read about the game, I had no idea. ;)
i swear f1 needs more pom-poms.
Looks like Rex Ryan is on a seafood diet
But please, not in Ferrari red.
Not sure they would be much good at 200 mph
he sees food and eats it?
That's the one. Doesn't really work in writing
Ed Reed's pink hat made my night. :D
It looks ridiculous but who is going to tell him?
actually, being here with you guys makes my night. :)
This game just went crazy
oh this game is so weird already!
107 yard kick off return for TD
Longest play in the HISTORY of the NY Jets, 107 yards!?!?!
I thought he was going to get caught around the 20 yard line
Funny to see him looking up at the screen to see where the guys were behind him. Clever.
Just like racing drivers
Really? I hadn't noticed or heard of this - when and where do they do that?
It happens a lot and has done for years. They really don't talk about it any more but a lot of drivers in post race interviews over the years have said they either tracked another driver's position on the big screens or have talked about incidents on a different part of the track that they saw.
You also see it in major athletics events in distance races. As the leader runs toward the finish line you will see his head look up at a screen to see what is happening behind him
Use all the resources available to you. :)
Exactly
If you are the center and you move snap the ball
oh no. hehe
bad almost-snap
This has the makings of a very high scoring game.
QB's fault. He made a half step that looked like he was stamping to start the play
Almost intercepted
which is, of course, another way of saying their defenses have issues.
We good get a record for penalties tonight
Apart from when they score TDs
Mike Carlson picked up on him watching the screen on the TD run
am settled in now, bring it.
yes :)
*slides the beverages and snacks your way*
One of my students' best friend is the son of Ricky Williams.
Ravens 10
Jets 7
Tells you everything about the game that the Jets offence is only being introduced now
true
Another penalty
That almost looked like a false start for the defence
thought so, too
mishandled snap
Another bad snap.
Normally I don't see two of those in a season and tonight we get two in the one quarter
Jets 3 and out
yeah, messy
maybe it's all the pink shoes and gloves. It's throwing them off.
:)
are they that colour for a reason? the chearleader is in purple.
the pink is to raise awareness for breast cancer fundraising.
ah-ha! one game only?
I have not watched American football for years. I did not know it was on C4. Is that new to this year? (I know they showed it many years back.)
Whenever I did watch, the team in the dark kit always lost.
yes
cheers.
They do it every October. All the teams do it. Creates some stunning colour clashes
Wow, great completion by Flacco
jets aren't pink though?
they have the pink towels in the waistbands
so they do.
hehe
We'll have to see if that holds true tonight. Right now they're doing better, but it's early days.
It went back to C4 last year. I always thought teams in dark kits did well. Denver won nothing in their pale orange colour but won two superbowls when the switched to dark blue. THe Buccaneers were a complete joke in their orangey/peach colour but suddently became a good team when they switched to dark cherry red
And both teams are making so many mistakes anything can happen.
C4 just said Jets total offence ( the total distance they have moved the ball forward) is minus 4 yards
Even the NFL website has a subtle pink tinge
http://www.nfl.com/
hehe! oy.
that explains it. i signed up for media access to find a picture, but you have to pay for them.
Bernie is running football?
yeah, it has one of those crazy feels to it right now.
Touchdown Ravens
he might be! they use AP for all images, so standard sports price. we could buy f1 pics from them if we were rich and stupid :)
the NFL is notoriously Bernie-esque with all of their images, films and merch.
It is a safe bet all the teams will have the same rules because they are all franchises rather than independent clubs. They don't even get to sell their own merchandise. All the teams share merchandise sales
Ravens 16 Jets 7
17-7
is this any use?
http://www.newyorkjets.com/schedule/game/2011/regular4/
bugger, that's what i was just looking at.
yeah, that's handy. I've never seen the team pages because I'm so spoiled that I can watch the games on tv and get the info.
I really like the graphic that tells you where they are on the field and what's going on.
That reminds me that I forgot about the game center on the NFL site
http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/2011100214/2011/REG4/[email protected]#menu=drivechart&tab=track
twitter may also be useful:
https://twitter.com/nyjets
https://twitter.com/1WinningDrive
oh cheers, that's cool. I forgot about that, too.
#eeek
Odd things to hear in a program trailer. If Jesus lived now he would not drive a bright yellow Hummer
The side view option on the right hand side is better than the top view.
WWJD - what would Jesus drive??
ooooh!!!
THey have removed a lot of the info that was available last year
dear.lord.
No idea. I was looking at my laptop when I heard that line
Another sack, fumble?? yikes, Jets.
So much opportunity to create graphs
that is AWESOME.
Last year they had a full depth chart of all the players in each team linked to profiles and stats for each. I guess that feature is behind the paywall now
I think we need to find an early baseball play off game to live comment since they started a couple of days ago
Ravens 20
Jets 7
if we can hang on until i have enough to by an mlb pass, i'd like to try the app and apple tv integration.
*buy, not by.
Maybe NY should consider a QB who can catch.
The season is almost over. I think you should wait till next season before you part with cash. A play off game would let you get a grasp of the game so the stuff you are paying for will make more sense
yeah we are into playoffs for baseball now, 'world' series in October.
There is one at Baylor who can do that. There was a very odd college game a few weeks ago that went crazy on twitter. The final score was a long pass CAUGHT by the QB
wow. Missed that.
Not so subtle facemask penalty.
Finally the Jets make a play and STILL lose yaedage :)
Those face masks make great handles. Shame you can't use them. ;)
perfect, lets do that then.
I think it was Declan Brennan from RLM who was tweeting it and I started searching for Baylor and some three letter college. The game finished 50-47 or something ludicrous
Well if the QB threw it very high and ran very fast...
ha!
I will have a look at the schedule and see if there is an early game.
:D
I have no idea who threw it
It was TCU at Baylor and finished 48-50
If a pass is made across the middle and no one's there to catch it, is it still a great pass?
college games can be whacko.
I have just put a couple of quid on NY winning at 9/1. Well 10 on Betfair so if NY do win I will get £18 - 5% = £17.10 plus stake back.
:D
2 minutes 30 Is the QB catching the pass. He threw some incredible passes before that
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwYvFeYoomE&feature=related
That is optimistic but given the effect Kai and I have on these games anything is possible
Best way to get a broken nose is to go face first for the line
hehe
The kicking jinx has yet to take full effect, it seems.
that's definitely one of them.
I claim credit for the punt being returned for a TD
credit given.
Another case where a player was left to go straight at the QB
I think his arm was back but it was not coming forward
Jet QB Sanchez is gonna SORE tomorrow.
*be
Terrible explanation by the referee but the decision is right
hehe
Yeah
Rex clearly has a difference of opinion with the referee
oh, take the camera off Ryan for the kids' sake.
I don't see his arm going forward. Up and loaded, but not forward.
What is the rule in question here?
Jets 7
Ravens 27
Ravens 27
Jets 7
D'Brickashaw
What a name.
If the QB's arm is moving forward when he is hit the rule is an incomplete pass. If it is not then it is a fumble and the opposition can pick the ball up and score
Thanks.
There are loads of them in American sports. Who named anyone Coco Crisp. Breakfast cereal yes. Baseball player no
Another penalty
Will Power's name amuses me.
and Baguette :)
I am really enjoying these commentators. I didn't even pick up who they are
Definitely
Collinsworth and Michaels or your guys?
So does his face when is he is not happy
NBC?
Jets are getting completely hammered.
yes
2 blitzers free to the QB
I have heard them lots before but they are much funnier tonight. Mind you so is the game
Chris Collinsworth and Al Michaels
True. They seem to be loosened up tonight. :)
Maybe they are wearing pink too
Interception TD
Mind you some drivers have descriptive names that do not suit, like Scott Speed, or Pippa Mann.
What was Flacco thinking? He steps past the guys heading for him then just gave the ball away
The comeback begins.
:D
hehe
ooh funky box thing there.
The Betfair price had gone up to 34 (on NY) but is now back to 9.2
Jets 14
Ravens 27
No way am I going to sleep (deliberately) at half time in this game. Anything could happen
hehe
how are they putting graphics on the field under the players?
I have a meeting tomorrow morning and I should turn in at half time.
Only on TV. They are not really there
Should is different to will
yeah... but how?
umm... I've never thought about how. Good question!
you caught that, of course. ;)
I have no idea. They have been doing it for years and are almost perfect now. THey used to be flickery and patchy
which ones?
like a pointy triangle. they players run over it.
I assume the blue and yellow lines
it's a blue thing that says 1st and 10 or something.
for the jets it's white and green.
Offside
Penalty
oh yes.
They do it in hockey games, too, where they temporarily illustrate an offside line and stuff like that.
1st and 5, now.
Fight
Just noticed there is no blue line
yeah, me too.
I never really looked at it so much before. It's so well done, now. wow.
No idea how they do that
I looked at it when they first did it and thought it was clever but I have never seen an explanation for it. To be fair I have never looked for one
it would be hard to get that right in post production. i'm floored they can do that live. it's perfect in HD too.
I was always amazed with the yellow line when there are players standing on it
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1st_%26_Ten_(graphics_system)
cool, they called it 1st and Ten!
need to read that later.
Jets 17
Ravens 27
Great imagination
they seem to be referring to the yellow line which usually shows the tv audience the line of scrimmage - where they're starting, but I will assume the tech is the same or similar.
"yellow line thing" must've been taken :)
The yellow line is the line that gives a new 1st down. The blue line is/was the line of scrimmage
:D
this is the company that does it, or one of them,
http://www.sportvision.com/
oh yeah. Whatev. ;)
if they can do it in nfl with players and all there legs, drawing a racing line on an f1 track must be simple.
Should be. Although the NFL only have to map 100 yards by however wide the field is rather than several miles of track
last link on this, How Stuff Works
http://www.howstuffworks.com/question225.htm
They do the baseball graphics and data too
true. but codemasters have mapped every track for f1 2011. each team must've mapped every track for their simulators too.
and it's a rectangular grid rather than twists and turns and hills, etc.
i'm following the wrong sport!!
*Boom*
:)
I think camera position must play a part too
yes, it does.
]
true. haven't read it all, but f1 tracks tend not to be green either. at least not in colour.
:)
It's interesting stuff, how it's all done.
Half time
sounds like it's related to the arrows that follow nascar cars.
There is bound to be a lot of crossover in all those things
the things you learn.
it was really helpful in the hockey games i watched because the game moves so quickly.
Every sport we look at overloads us with new information it seems
Michael Vick was playing today. Did he not break something vital last week?
How long is half-time?
I think 15 minutes. It's not like the week and a half they have for the superbowl
his non-throwing hand.
Oh, and I heard Ben Roethlisberger hurt his foot today.
So it was
C4 have been showing higlights of games but haven't mentioned him
Left on crutches, had x-rays and may miss the next game against Tennessee
http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/news/breaking/s_759870.html
QB stats tell the story
Sanchez completed 4 passes from 15 attempts
Flacco 8 of 27
Nice play getting to the ball
Wow, that does say it all.
Wow. I just realized this is being shown live here. Lunch time football !
the same game?
Same game. I think it's live. Should I say the score?
yeah, we have 27-17 Ravens
is it the only game they syndicate then?
has to be live cause the teams are tweeting.
Yup, and flacco just fumbled?
Another fumble!
Looking at the baseball schedule the most suitable game for us would be Texas Rangers at Tampa Bay on Tuesday at 2pm eastern/ 7pm UK
http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/schedule/ps.jsp?y=11
Other than that there are a few games at 5pm eastern/10pm UK this week
Jolly good.
Live. NFL. Who would have thunk it.
sounds good.
Drat.
Interception for a TD!!!!!??!!
Ooooo ravens are killing it
Did you see the Colts 3rd QB come on last week. His career QB rating before that game was 9.8
:)
It is the only one on at this time
:D
wow.
I wonder if they do Monday Night Football, too?
noted.
Not here. Probably on Sky
Definitely on Sky
That would be tueday afternoon football here :-)
Sunday night and Monday night are stand alone games. The rest of the league plays during the day Sundays. Games are on at 1pm or 4pm EST, different live times in diff U.S. timezones.
hehe
Indianapolis at Tampa Bay tomorrow
Imagine if anyone was watching their first game tonight
i'm watching my first full game.
So far: 2 minutes football, 10 minutes adds
Did you not watch a superbowl or two?
Ooo his head fell off
hehehehe!
Odds are you will never see another game anything like this one
oh, does that count? in that case, not my first game at all.
yeah, this is a sloppy mess that is really fun and unpredictable with momentum changing constantly.
The superbowl counts as a real game
it seemed more surreal :)
Mr C, make sure to check out Guille's G+ photos. F1 Minute got some serious altitude. :)
it is. This is maybe your first regular game.
He stuck them on mountains
*hugs*
THere is nothing regular about this game
poor choice of words, for sure.
F1 Minute went skiing.
NY back on defence. Their best chance of scoring.
Are you saying it is going downhill fast? :)
:D
Trouble is if they score their offence comes back
:D
I don't even know what's going on anymore, barely, it's all topsy turvy.
reading out players tweets.
#loveit
Not for long.
There's our lovely yellow line.
OK, the quick reply does not blockquote the original comment.
Are you using sidepodcast.com/realtime or /dashboard?
Do they ever play on real grass any more?
Good question. It doesn't seem like it
I don't know.
Realtime. I have never used the reply button before. I just assumed it would blockquote otherwise I may as well have just used the normal comment box.
yes. Scroll down for a quick list
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_current_National_Football_League_stadiums
click the text.
way more than I thought still play on grass.
that is, after the reply button.
You can click on something and it will blockquote in realtime. Just like I quoted your comment
Aha!
Wikipedia knows everything
The real grass is so manicured it looks fake
Noted. Cheers.
It really does
Ooooo aerial view! Wonder if they got that from alms?
:D
Why do you mean from the Porsche aerial camera? :)
Flacco has not completed a pass since the first quarter and his team has twice as many points as the opposition. Weird game
so weird.
Groan.
Never mind the defence are coming back
Not a lot of completions going on
16 out of 55 between them
Oh!
Mike Carlson suggests the Jets should go to a single wing and not use a QB at all
17/55. I unfairly maligned them
Well, I'd love to stay up but I've got to get some sleep. What a crazy game.
I've really enjoyed this. Thank you, Mr C and everyone who's here. :) Thanks for taking care of the post, Steven.
Good night all.
Night Kai
Night Kai.
I am sure you won't miss anything now
see you!
yeah, as Flacco gets a completion. ;)
I'll catch up tomorrow with these comments. :)
:D
Fumble
Jets get the ball
So far
7 turnovers
16 penalties
5 returns for touchdowns
Crazy game
Jets punt the ball away after failing to get a first down
Jets really have nothing in offense
They have been awful. The Ravens offence has been bad too to be fair
51 points in the game and only one touchdown scored by sensible conventional means
The teams are just swapping punts now as the game fizzles out
Yep looks all over
New York really need to get a move on.
Never mind you will get even better odds next week before the Patriots kill them
Jets 3 and out again. Didn't make a yard again
oops. Went for it on 4th down too. Sanchez hit his receiver on the foot with the ball.
Ravens just using up the clock with kneel downs. Wonder how they can screw that up
I know I have lost my money but I think it was a decent value bet. American football is like snooker. Bet consistantly on the outsider, it will pay in the long run.
:-)
The way the game was going it wasn't a stupid bet. Anything could have happened in this game
Well there you go. I better get back to my cleaning.
Game over
Jets 17
Ravens 34
Thanks to everyone for commenting. We will be back next week when Green Bay Packers go to the Atlanta Falcons.
Now it is time for me to sleep
Nght all
Night.
cheers for the thread.
have made a minor change to the homepage. with so many live threads this weekend, they were pushing some of the newer content off the page, before people have had chance to read them.
so i've split out live threads into their own box on the sidebar.
at the moment the info is tiny and lost, but imagine it bigger and styled nicely and in a more prominent position. clearly needs more work, just wanted to point out the change.
