Team GB picked up at least one medal yesterday, and finished well in some other events - we seem to be coming in not last but not top three either. How are your favourites getting on? Today we have medals to be awarded in the following: Men's Kayak Slalom, Individual Time Trial for both men and women, Men's 3m Synchro Springboard, Individual Epee and Individual Sabre, Men's Gymnastics Individual All-Around, both men's and women's Judo, several different rowing categories, Women's Pistol Shooting, Women's Singles Table Tennis, Weightlifting for both men and women, plus those oh-so-fabulous swimming finals.
London 2012, Day 5
Published by Christine Blachford on
I am watching rowing, it takes them days and days and days to get to the finals.
Nice to have a bit of a relaxing morning
are you there?
finals about to start
looks like it might be gold for gb
noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo the poms won
aussies silver, kiwis bronze
I missed it - just, rewind time - shame I know the result now - no tension. :D
As fun as it must be to be awesome like China and USA and rack them up, the buzz in the office upon getting that first gold medal is not to be missed.
it makes it more special in a way when they only come about now and then, especilly in events where your not favourite. i can still remember sneaking in to a class room at lunch time with one of my mates and watching duncan armstrong win a gold at seoul in 88, we werent allowed to be there but it didnt stop us running around the staff room yelling out we won gold. even though i was only young and it was 24 years ago i can still remember it like it was yesterday. the teachers didnt mind but they said dont do it again.
look out, not again
germany win, canada second and gb third.
no, getting to the rowing involves a 5.30 alarm, that's not relaxing!
On my way to the ladies table tennis final, my only event today
so true, nz normally only get one or two at best, they're so exciting when they happen!
I see from Amy on twitter that all 8 badminton players who tried to lose matches to get an easier draw in the next round have been disqualified. THey were deliberately hitting the shuttle into the net or just casually putting it out.
https://twitter.com/AmyFulton/status/230639205741633537
The fault is with the authorities for changing the format to the round-robin as it is and allowing it to be manipulated in such a way. Sure its morally wrong, but, I don't think I would have disqualified them.
Men's Cycling Indiv TT just starting. Chris Froome starts @1500, Wiggo soon after. #AllezWiggo
I agree. It's like playing a weakend team in the league because you have a big lead and a European game midweek. If you are in that position you have earned the right to do it. It doesn't exactly fit with the Olymic ethos but neither does having competitors who have made $10 million plus from their sport
Jack Bauer is competing in the cycling
Ooops LLSanchez broke his chain before he'd even moved off the start - new bike lost him ~25s.
Bad day for badminton, wasn't it? :(
Beppu been bumped.
After all riders at first split, (1st) Tony Martin, (2nd) Wiggo +5, (3rd) Fabian Cancellara +6.
Nothing to worry about :)
Looking in at Table Tennis, the telly makes the table look pretty small. Have the Table Tennis tables according to the International governing body shrank is size over the years?
I understand there are some Club Leagues in europe as well.
I'll give the manufacturer credit for the table design though. ;)
it looks tiny in real life too
yeah i thought they looked small on tv, how much smaller than the standard ones we have all played on at someones house somewhere over the years?
Bet it's as wide or slightly wider than a twin bed mattress...
My guess, Lots.
And the action is much quicker than your rec room get-together.
Men's indiv TT - 2nd split (1st) Wiggo, (2nd) Martin +11, (3rd) Froome +??, (4th) Cancellara +30
Froome was +24
Quite good this...
Wiggo, Martin +22, Froome, +41
Great job by Froome, hopefully Wiggo will carry this home...
Froome finishes course, and sets the best time.
Phinney to P2 but not for long
Wiggo can (could) see Martin in the distance.
He made look easy. :)
He made it*
Sensational...
NAILED IT !! #AllezWiggo
The Guardian has already given him GOLD ...
Methinks he'll be referred to as Sir Bradley Wiggins now. :)
legend!
Wiggo has just become the most decorated GB Olympian of all time! #AllezWiggo
Going back to the Road Race on Saturday, was the correct version of the Kazahkstan national anthem played?
2 words: Sports Personality.
Be careful with Olympic spirit. Too much of it clearly makes you crazy.

youre kidding arent you?
It'll be interesting to see how the viewership numbers compare between the Individual Time Trial and the Hungarian GP in Britain.
come on andy!
I go away for 5 minutes and bagdhatis wins a set, bah :)
Hooray for 2 Golds and a Bronze :)
Murray looking a lot better this set
It could only happen to Boris. Dramatic entrance? check. Safety gear? check. Flags? check. Someone has tested the zip wire to make sure it works? ermm...
http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/blogs/londonspy/boris-left-dangling-zip-wire-mishap-142405931.html
hahahaha! classic video :) :)
i assume, if it's for kids, he was just too heavy. fun though.
nice one mr murray.
yay andy!
There are some of us reading this who have no idea what you are on about. Did he win?
he won 2 sets to 1 over bagdhatis :)
sorry. lack of context. i'd add some, but i have no idea what i'm talking about.
christine left the telly on, there was lots of cheering and they said he won a game of tennis.
#clueless
My bad. I should know better than to leave you in charge of the remote.
i see sports, i see people cheering and i'm happy. that is the extent of my 2012 olympics :)
♥
Maybe you should leave handover notes each time just to keep him informed
They only play 3 sets? I thought this was proper tennis
technically he won lots of games of tennis ;)
Just watching women's basketball on the BBC player. GB came back from a 10 shot deficit to Russia and being behind for the whole time I watched (mid-3rd qtr) to get to just 3 points down, but it ended GB 61 - Rus 67. The Russians were taller which unsurprisingly seemed to help. :)
Not bad though given how good the Russians are and apparently GB used to be awful just a few years ago.
Interestingly there are two commentators for basketball and one is Mike Carlson who is the guy who does the NFL analysing for C4/BBC.
Yeah - I recognised his voice as 'that American guy from the BBC Superbowl coverage'.
am watching sharapova vs lisiki on the telly now. even if i don't know much about what's going on, i will never ever get bored of channel hopping through 24 channels of live sport.
Seeing some highlights of the women's rowing earlier. They had a massive lead!
I love that rowing commentator, when he gets going he squeaks like a teenager who's voice has just broken, really high-pitched for the men's 8!
Hehehe. It's fun when they get all excited. Matt Baker does it for the gymnastics too :)
Thorpe has escaped the studio
Swimming finals now. Two Britishers in this 200m breaststroke.
And as we were just saying, the commentator keeps saying he's really excited :)
I've just noticed the team GB swimmers wear red caps
That's the only way I've been able to keep up with them in the water!
Clark Burckle is an excellent name.
I like the swimming commentators too, proper enthusiasm
we need a yellow cap so we know which one is the no. 2 swimmer
They seem to get on really well too, it's like Ant and Crofty.
Reasonable starts.
Under world record pace at the moment, but we've seen that drift away loads of times already.
That camera was so close
come on jamieson!!
oh my god!
world record!!! so close :o
So close!! That was brilliant!
Good work for a silver, and a British record!
Brilliant. Lots of records in the pool this year!
The other one came last. Oops!
That lady on the end wanted to fly
Finally, the Thorpedo has been put in the pool during the coverage, and has anyone else noticed the cuddley white lion with the red and blue spikey mane that is sat behind them.
everyone is happy! Today I heard a local chatting to an American on the tube, saing he was breaching the tube social code by talking to a stranger but he was just in such a good mood because everyone in London is happy and he's really enjoying the atmosphere the Games has bought.
It made me so happy because there was so much negativity everywhere beforehand but all those people have either changed their mind or are in hiding
this is awesome :)
and speaking of the tube, I was on the jubilee line which they've said would be busy, from London bridge, which they said would be busy, it was peak hour for workers, and there were absolutely no issues.
Catastrophic travel, they said. My foot, I say.
2-word reason: Opening Ceremony.
Love it.
Swimmer fighting tears on the podium, it's like de ja vu!
So this is why zsaum bautgartner never won a race, with an anthem like this.
Gemma Lowe in the next final. Lane 8 though.
come on gemma!
Great start.
she's doing well
It's always so hard to tell, every different angle looks like she's in a different position!
wow, the middle pack are storming through
I think she went a bit fast too soon, but that was great.
I think they were expecting a huge influx of tourists in addition to the usual ones, but it seems some are staying away. In Weymouth they are saying trade is down on a usual year... personally I think that's as much due to the dreadful weather, and maybe partly due to all the negative 'it'll be chaos' press.
When they fiddle with their goggles, you can see how nervous they are. Hands shaking and everything.
2:20.000 for a new WR in the 200m W breaststroke
Lochte v. Phelps again.
With those headphones, Phelps looked like a doogy club-DJ. #1s&2s
I like that the South West Trains @SW_Trains account is talking as much about Olympic sport as it is help and support for travellers :)
I saw you retweet something about oars earlier!
I must say, I don't like these see through goggles. Bit freaky.
"SWT here like Steve Redgrave negotiating the choppy waters of service disruption with the oar of advice."
:)
James Goddard through to the 200m IM final.
Relay time, could be good
All those US ladies look the same!
I am convinced they are secretly robots. The US gymnasts definitely are, they're so good!
I always wonder what would happen if they mistimed their turn and found no wall to push against. That'd be hard to get the momentum back.
Android Olympics would be a festival of precision
Surely it must happen, and getting too close as well.
Apple Olympics would be even more precise, not to mention stylish
I've done that, utter killer, your whole next length is ruined.
Team USA mega again!
US brilliant in the pool.
Wiggins!
The Wiggler is now a superstar!
Is he going to get a stamp as well?
Every GB gold medallist will
I want some sideburns.
Maybe settle for some on Mr C methinks.
Bradley greeting the crowds on BBC3. Mr C says: "Has he got more racing to do? It's past his bedtime. Can't he wait to be a legend until after the Olympics is over?"
:)
GB chaps won their football match today.
Into the quarter finals.
Evening all. To use a well known Scottish word I am drookit.
http://www.cs.stir.ac.uk/~kjt/general/scots.html
Christine can have sideburns too.

:)
I thought Brad had finished.
Yay!
We need pictures. Once Wiggomania dies down a bit you can do Elvis impressions too.
They were showing short clips of things that had happened today on BBC1. Someone at the archery almost shot a bird. A bird flew in front of the target just as the arrow arrived. I guess birds must get hit occassionally at archery and clay pigeon shooting. I wonder if a bird has ever been hit by a clay.
Just flicked through some the BBC's special Olympic channels and couldn't believe what they are wearing at the beach volleyball. Both teams are wearing track suit trousers, tee shirts with bikini tops on top of the tee shirt. Is this a female version of Superman's underwear on the outside?
bringing a beach to london wasn't the cleverest of ideas? they should've installed some of those outdoor pub garden heaters to warm the players up a bit.
Watching the GB Hockey highlights, probably the best thing that comes to mind is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lacrosse_helmet
If you missed anything today and are in the UK (or able to access BBC) I recommend Olympics Tonight, 10.40pm - Midnight on BBC1. Has been good all week and I like the closing credits montage finishing with Big Ben.
Had the best day at Wimbledon again today, some amazing matches! Much busier today than it was saturday which is good to see, all outside courts were packed except for the one Venus was playing at.. but that was probably a good thing. Tsongas doubles and Rogers two matches are the highlights for me. Goodness isn't the Olympics fun! The cheers when people heard about all of the medals! :) atmosphere is awesome. Sad that was my last Olympic day tho.
no reason why it has to be http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/olympics/news/9444917/75000-more-Olympic-tickets-to-go-on-sale-including-1600-coveted-athletics-seats.html
