With Tom Daley just scraping through to the semi-finals of the diving, all eyes will be on him as that competition gets going in the morning. However, there is plenty else to watch out for during the day, including medals for: Men's 50km Walk (!?), Javelin, High Jump and a couple more Relays, Women's Basketball, Men's Boxing, Canoe and Kayak sprints, Cross-Country Mountain Biking, All-Around Rhythmic Gymnastics, Women's Handball and Men's Hockey, Taekwondo, Women's Volleyball and Men's Wrestling. Also the Modern Pentathlon takes place today. Exciting stuff!

I think I have tuned in just in time to see us win a gold medal. In that windmill style boating.

  • Will^11/08/2012 at 08:50

Tom looks to be 4th on the startlist for this morning's semi.

  • Christine11/08/2012 at 08:57

Tom's brother looks just like him!

  • Will^11/08/2012 at 09:06

Looked alright, 81 is a good score

  • Christine11/08/2012 at 09:07

The others look reeeeally good though.

Agreed - he'll have to put in some good ones, but if that was his worst of the 6, we could be ok.

I can't believe the judges don't get replays. How can they judge anything, it's so fast. The only thing I can see in realtime is the splash.

  • john11/08/2012 at 09:10

not long left now, a day or two, it seems to have gone so quick.

watching the diving here too, also keeping an eye on the 50km walk, how many get through to the final, is it 8? im not too sure.

I think you can see whether they enter straight or not. That must be why there are so many judges, so the average gets rid of judges just guessing.

  • john11/08/2012 at 09:12

    12 I think.

cheers, diving is another of those once every 4 years sports.

I like the isolation that the darkness gives in 32 and the kids face in 47

The Wenlock hug is mighty cool also

  • Will^11/08/2012 at 10:00

Tom in 8th, after 3/6. (~8 points above the drop zone)

  • Christine11/08/2012 at 10:03

Tom in 7th, after 4/6. He's slowly creeping towards the top of the pile.

Morning. Does anyone know the purpose of the small pool for the divers after they have finished?

  • Christine11/08/2012 at 10:22

    91.8!

  • Will^11/08/2012 at 10:22

    Wow 91.8

  • Christine11/08/2012 at 10:25

Morning. Does anyone know the purpose of the small pool for the divers after they have finished?

Is it like a mini warm-down for them? Tom seems to stick to the showers.

  • Christine11/08/2012 at 10:25

That one was awful, entered the water at 45 degrees!

  • Will^11/08/2012 at 10:27

Is it like a mini warm-down for them? Tom seems to stick to the showers.

The pool is cold, and the tub is nice and warm - keeping their muscles loose etc.

  • Christine11/08/2012 at 10:36

    Tom up to 4th now!

  • Will^11/08/2012 at 10:36

    How... glamourous. Nice touch though

    I can see Tom's Q.

  • Christine11/08/2012 at 10:50

    How... glamourous.

That's even better though, isn't it? Not just posh places get the Olympic spirit?

  • Bassano11/08/2012 at 10:51

That's even better though, isn't it? Not just posh places get the Olympic spirit?

Oh absolutely. It's likely the audience will benefit more than at a high class facility. It's just a surprise but a really nice gesture

  • john11/08/2012 at 10:55

reigning gold medalist is out, mitcham finishes 13th after blowing his final dive.

  • Christine11/08/2012 at 10:58

Bless not-so-lil Tom, all smiley now.

you'd have to be to agree to this. and people said dressage was odd!

  • Steven Roy11/08/2012 at 11:32

The three British team horses are now up for sale at £30 million. It may look odd but it is obviously very profitable

  • Mark11/08/2012 at 11:39

Watching the mountain bikers take on fluids. I'd be tempted to do a Button and take someone else's water "by mistake".

  • Mr C11/08/2012 at 11:44

commentators - "red is a slightly heavier paint" wha?

  • Bassano11/08/2012 at 11:44

Mountain biking is in the Olympics now?

    Cool

  • Bassano11/08/2012 at 11:45

commentators - "red is a slightly heavier paint" wha?

Some colours need more coats for a good finish, maybe red is one of them

  • john11/08/2012 at 11:46

yay silver in the walk, its a strange event but silver is nice.

australia also won a bronze today too, in the cycling. from athens 2004, thanks to the american who has admitted being on performance enhancing drugs.

'Eight years after his ride, Australian cyclist Michael Rogers will finally become an Olympic medallist.

The International Committee Board is to meet on Friday to reassign the 2004 Athens Games road race time trial medals in the wake of American gold medallist Tyler Hamilton's doping admissions last year, Associated Press reports.

The matter has become urgent because there is an eight-year statute of limitations for the International Olympic Committee to officially change placings that expires this month.

so its never too late to win bronze....

  • Mr C11/08/2012 at 11:48

Mountain biking is in the Olympics now?

    cool course.

  • Mr C11/08/2012 at 11:49

    cool course.

short cuts. bernie would like it.

  • Steven Roy11/08/2012 at 11:58

commentators - "red is a slightly heavier paint" wha?

Paint weight has always been an issue in motor racing. Teams have worked hard with paint suppliers to get the same colour paint but at a lower density so that it weighs less. I think an F1 car now has something like 4kg of paint on it. That's 4 kg of weight that can't be put to more advantageous use. If they could halve the density of the paint that would gove them 2kg more ballast to play with.

  • Christine11/08/2012 at 12:19

Lots of people appear to be falling off their bikes and/or walking them around the course now. Tough event!

  • Christine11/08/2012 at 13:00

They've been going for an hour and a half. Exhausting.

  • Christine11/08/2012 at 13:01

France get the gold by miles.

  • Christine11/08/2012 at 13:02

Germany silver, with the gap just over a minute!

  • Christine11/08/2012 at 13:04

  • Mr C11/08/2012 at 13:04

she's been able to practice on this course ahead of the others, it can't have come as a surprise?

"a football match, kicking off at 3 o'clock on the bbc, just like it used to be"

oh lordy, they've got the most miserable man on earth to commentate this match.

  • Will^11/08/2012 at 13:58

Brazilian players have completed over twice as many dribbles as any other nation's - 79 vs Japan's 32.

  • Will^11/08/2012 at 14:02

Mexico already 1-0 in the football vs Brazil (<1 min).

  • Mr C11/08/2012 at 14:13

missed the goal. love that bbc player adds a chapter marker for the goal along with the start of the first half.

  • Will^11/08/2012 at 14:18

Brazil have never won Olympic Gold (in M's football)

yeah and the water seems a bit more choppy compared to the last couple of days.

finland took out the bronze medal v the russians earlier today.

  • Will^11/08/2012 at 14:33

yeah and the water seems a bit more choppy compared to the last couple of days.

I would've loved for these conditions for all the other medal races - esp 470s and 49ers.

  • john11/08/2012 at 14:35

gb v the aussies in the mens hockey playoff for bronze just started now too.

  • Christine11/08/2012 at 14:35

But I thought Brazil were the best footballers ever?

They tend to send teams of quite young players, and this is the one trophy they need to make their cabinet complete.

  • Amy11/08/2012 at 14:38

The IOC has agreed to replace a London Olympic medal that was unexpectedly broken. Brazilian Felipe Kitadai so treasured his Olympic bronze medal from the judo he refused to let it leave his sight, but accidentally dropped it in the shower. The upper segment of the medal was snapped off

I love when bronze means that much to someone <3

  • Will^11/08/2012 at 14:46

Great prestart tactics in the sailing.

  • Christine11/08/2012 at 14:50

They tend to send teams of quite young players, and this is the one trophy they need to make their cabinet complete.

In the book I read that clearly didn't help me understand very much at all, I think it said the football teams have to be all under 23 except just one or two people. (see: Giggs).

  • Will^11/08/2012 at 14:56

In the book I read that clearly didn't help me understand very much at all, I think it said the football teams have to be all under 23 except just one or two people. (see: Giggs).

Squad: 15 players under 23, 3 over 23. It look like the Brazil squad use less experienced players (even if they have international superstars under the age barrier).

  • Will^11/08/2012 at 14:59

AUS 1 - 1 GBR (men's hockey Bronze match, towards the end of the 1st 1/2)

Squad: 15 players under 23, 3 over 23. It look like the Brazil squad use less experienced players (even if they have international superstars under the age barrier).

they will take it alot more seriously next olympics thats for sure, really they should either make it the best players from every country playing otherwise its a bit of a non event, noone really takes it seriously, and although i dont like the sport alot of my mates who love the sport and are passionate about the game couldnt care less about it at olympic level because its just makeshift teams and means very little in terms of tournaments played throughout the year, which i think is sad that at olympic level, which should be the best of the best and the pinnacle of world sport that a gold medal and winning at olympic level doesnt mean much.

  • john11/08/2012 at 15:08

2-2 in the sailing, winner takes gold in the next race.

  • Christine11/08/2012 at 15:09

  • john11/08/2012 at 15:58

yeah bronze in the hockey, silver in the sailing and now playing the russians in the bronze playoff in womens basketball.

They get assigned horses randomly, so there's no understanding between them both, as there is in the other horse sports.

  • Amy11/08/2012 at 16:02

They get assigned horses randomly, so there's no understanding between them both, as there is in the other horse sports.

oh wow, i didn't know that. thats not good, no wonder the horse doesn't want to jump anything and is trying to throw him off every chance it gets.

He took more than double the time limit, ouch.

  • Amy11/08/2012 at 16:04

new man, new horse, not going much better.

  • Mr C11/08/2012 at 16:07

surely a horse can see a fence, and knows to jump it rather that run headlong into a solid object?

  • Mr C11/08/2012 at 16:12

person who designed the miniature stone henge, forgot the dancing dwarf :(

  • Amy11/08/2012 at 16:12

i could probably jump a hurdle but if i knew i could also pull up short and not jump it or run into it, i'd do that instead.

i wonder when there will be a modern modern pentathlon because the modern one is a bit outdated these days. who rides horses, swims AND fences?

reckon jeremy clarkson should reinvent it. something like: land a helicopter, disarm some explosives, abseil down the shard and outrun a police car.

If Jeremy Clarkson is doing it, it'll be something involving a caravan!

  • Will^11/08/2012 at 16:33

Are there only 4 events because the standards of numeracy are dropping?

  • Mr C11/08/2012 at 16:34

If Jeremy Clarkson is doing it, it'll be something involving a caravan!

well if the concept is to prove you're a modern man:

    - park a caravan

    - assemble ikea furniture

    - host a barbecue

    - bet on a winning horse

    - find your way home without a map

  • Mr C11/08/2012 at 16:34

Are there only 4 events because the standards of numeracy are dropping?

    mine are ;)

  • Mr C11/08/2012 at 16:41

is there a reason why the olympics don't build to a crescendo? why leave bizarre events like walking funny and falling off a horse until the end. should've been buried on the opening day.

  • Amy11/08/2012 at 16:41

Seemed like middle Saturday was the big crescendo. And then random 200m final day.

  • Will^11/08/2012 at 16:42

    4x100m final tonight

  • Will^11/08/2012 at 16:42

I quite like that the pentathlon events give them a time advantage in the final one. It's like the Eliminator.

  • Will^11/08/2012 at 18:10

I quite like that the pentathlon events give them a time advantage in the final one. It's like the Eliminator.

I always want the heptathlon (800m) and decathlon (1500m) to do the same, but that would really affect the tactics in the races. And I love that is so much like biathlon for the Winter Games.

  • Amy11/08/2012 at 18:18

i cant see the street from my apartment but i could creepily watch them via the camera attached to the buzzer if i had a rough estimation of their arrival time.

  • Amy11/08/2012 at 18:36

after a lap of the house one of my flatmates isnt even home and the other one regularly wakes me up so i'm going to go for it. mmm, 5am pizza.

has bolt ever run a relay before? never seen anyone swap a baton in their hands before they start running. #madness

A lot of runners do. Not normally on the last leg though. Normally the middle two runners will be the only people who do that so that all runners receive the baton in the same hand. That way runners can be substituted or the order shuffled without people having to learn to stick a different hand back.

The other thing of course is if you take the baton the bit you are not holding is sticking out the back of your hand and you need it to be sticking out the front to pass it on so some shuffling is needed. Just not from the 4th runner

Diving is always in its own pool. The swimming pool isn't deep enough for someone dropping ten metres and not making a splash

    hehe of course!

i thought they were just jumping into the deep end

even the tiny little 10,000 person town i grew up in had a separate diving pool

  • Amy11/08/2012 at 20:18

Flume sliding needs to be in the Olympics

the plane museum we went to in germany had the scariest slides ever. they were steep and three-ish stories high and i think only children went on them because adults were too smart to.

  • Mr C11/08/2012 at 20:55

Right, if the next 2 guys get more than 90.90 then Tom drops a place.

    Tim Nicholls @MrNipps

    now

Apparently the split times for the Jamaican 4x100m were Carter 10.1, Frater 9.0, Blake 9.0, Bolt 8.8. Wow.

i'm not a huge fan of beckham, but i get the feeling he is there because he is Beckham, and not because he will bring much more. If Gabbie talks to him more i'll probably find it easier to accept him ;) the most he has done is move the gold counter.

302 in london as well, exactly the same number even though lots of events changed!

I've sorted it, London had 2 extra boxing medals and 1 extra tennis medal, but Beijing had one medal each for softball and baseball, and an extra one for sailing.

    golf? heikki for rio 2016?

theres an awful lot of weight divisions for men because there only seems to be 3-4kg windows for each one. surely they could cut that back a bit, i have no idea, i hate boxing.

  • Pat W11/08/2012 at 23:00

I like golf but don't think it should be an Olympic sport. Rugby Sevens could be fun.

    same as tennis i guess.

I don't like it either but it's been all over the BBC coverage the last few days, hard to avoid unless you just stop watching Olympic coverage, which I did last night because I was bored of it

the only things i've been reading about boxing have come from the irish one in one direction because i follow him on twitter. an irishman who loves boxing, so stereotypical.

Business > Sport these days :(

All 5 of Ireland's medals have come from fighting and horses, no stereotypes there at all! :) :)

yeah, i guess in my brain 99% of the people in the olympics these days are making plenty of money from what they do

  • Mr C11/08/2012 at 23:08

My two penneth worth: 'Professional' sports shouldn't be in the Olympics.

but you could argue that posh sports shouldn't be either. if it's amateur should you be required to purchase a dressage horse? at least i can afford a tennis racket.

  • Steven Roy11/08/2012 at 23:10

but you could argue that posh sports shouldn't be either. if it's amateur should you be required to purchase a dressage horse? at least i can afford a tennis racket.

It's a fair point but class shouldn't be an issue. Why should 'Upper Class' sports be any different to more accessible ones.

Basketball, Football, Tennis, Golf have no right in the modern Olympics. But I understand why they are

  • Bassano11/08/2012 at 23:11

i'd rather have golf in the games any day.

    To watch, yes..

  • lou11/08/2012 at 23:12

have you watched golf on the tv before.. it's unwatchable.. at least horse dancing is watchable.. :)

  • Amy11/08/2012 at 23:13

    i quite like watching golf!

  • Pat W11/08/2012 at 23:14

    To watch, yes..

Although watching the big tournaments is a nice relaxing way to spend a day. I can't do all 4 days though.

  • Mr C11/08/2012 at 23:14

have you watched golf on the tv before.. it's unwatchable.. at least horse dancing is watchable.. :)

but people can relate to it and people can have a go at it themselves, people can aspire to being a world class golfer.

who can seriously sit and watch a £10m horse prance on sand and think "i'm game for a bit of that"?

  • Bassano11/08/2012 at 23:14

    compared to horse dancing??

I didn't watch it, mostly as it doesn't interest me. But I despise the fact that multi-millionaire sports people also get to compete in the Olympics, regardless of what some Arabian will pay for a Gold medal horse

  • Pat W11/08/2012 at 23:16

My two penneth worth: 'Professional' sports shouldn't be in the Olympics.

Maybe it depends on the sport. Amateur works for boxing and others. But the track and field athletes are pros aren't they, or some of them are?

I'm not sure big field sports should be there, including football even though I enjoyed the game we went to.

  • Bassano11/08/2012 at 23:16

but people can relate to it and people can have a go at it themselves, people can aspire to being a world class golfer.

Horse Riding is as accessible as Golfing.

Have you seen the price of Golf clubs?

[I have no interest in horses, btw]

I didn't watch it, mostly as it doesn't interest me. But I despise the fact that multi-millionaire sports people also get to compete in the Olympics, regardless of what some Arabian will pay for a Gold medal horse

only the very rich can play at horses! if it's about money, anything equestrian is right out of the question. no?

  • lou11/08/2012 at 23:16

    i quite like watching golf!

no way! Mum and Dad always have it on, and without fail i fall asleep. The most interesting part of it is the animals they spot and talk about.

I used to play golf and used to love it, i used to walk round with my parents while they played. i can deal with that... but on tv... no way. :)

  • Amy11/08/2012 at 23:16

Maybe it depends on the sport. Amateur works for boxing and others. But the track and field athletes are pros aren't they, or some of them are?

michael phelps was worth $40 million coming into London, hes not doing too bad.

    Not unless things have changed

  • Mr C11/08/2012 at 23:16

I'm not sure big field sports should be there, including football even though I enjoyed the game we went to.

in the end it's a sporting competition. if it's a sport, to my mind, it should be eligible.

  • Bassano11/08/2012 at 23:17

michael phelps was worth $40 million coming into London, hes not doing too bad.

Sponsorship is different. He doesn't get paid to turn up each week to swim in a league

  • Pat W11/08/2012 at 23:17

Have you seen the price of Golf clubs?

You can pick up a 2nd hand set for under £100, or hire a set from the local club, just to get you going.

  • Amy11/08/2012 at 23:17

in the end it's a sporting competition. if it's a sport, to my mind, it should be eligible.

i hate the endless 'thats not a sport!' that comes about, mostly bmx/equestrian/synchronised swimming.

    I'm damn sure I couldn't do any of them. They're a sport.

  • Amy11/08/2012 at 23:18

Sponsorship is different. He doesn't get paid to turn up each week to swim in a league

FINA pays prize money in some events.

  • Pat W11/08/2012 at 23:18

I think some do the Diamond League to earn a living.

  • Steven Roy11/08/2012 at 23:18

only the very rich can play at horses! if it's about money, anything equestrian is right out of the question. no?

Only the rich can afford those kind of horses but lots of kids from modest backgrounds get riding lessons at a local stables regularly. Many of them even get free riding lessons in return for working a few hours mucking out stables and grooming horses,

To start with golf is probably more expensive

  • Bassano11/08/2012 at 23:19

only the very rich can play at horses! if it's about money, anything equestrian is right out of the question. no?

    Not true.

I have family in Ireland that have horses and they are far from rich

[they no longer ride them in the street, without saddles]

  • Bassano11/08/2012 at 23:19

FINA pays prize money in some events.

OK, maybe things have changed. My point stands on pro-league stuff.

  • Steven Roy11/08/2012 at 23:19

Sponsorship is different. He doesn't get paid to turn up each week to swim in a league

A lot of athletes get paid to go to events

  • lou11/08/2012 at 23:20

but people can relate to it and people can have a go at it themselves, people can aspire to being a world class golfer.

becoming a world class golfer is probably harder than finding a riding school that does dressage etc. for example, there is one directly opposite my house. People may not watch dressage and think.. i want to do that, but they may think 'i want to try horse riding' which, if you're in the country (my part of the country anyway) isn't that hard to start doing.. and is much much cheaper than a round of golf!

I think the olympics highlights all these crazy sports and if it reaches just one person who goes 'yep i want to try that' then it's succeeded. It shouldn't be about just the accessible sports we see every day like golf, tennis, football. They highlight diving and swimming etc so why not horse riding and things :)

  • Bassano11/08/2012 at 23:20

i hate the endless 'thats not a sport!' that comes about, mostly bmx/equestrian/synchronised swimming.

These are all extremely talented individuals, to be selected to represent their country.

  • Steven Roy11/08/2012 at 23:21

but people can relate to it and people can have a go at it themselves, people can aspire to being a world class golfer.

Lots of people watch F1. Is that any more difficult for the average person to relate to than horse dancing?

  • Bassano11/08/2012 at 23:21

Exactly, cos the Bob Sleigh and Skeleton aren't exactly accessible either

  • Bassano11/08/2012 at 23:22

I love that the Olympics can inspire the next generation though. I've heard several stories of medal winners not even taking part in their sport before Beijing

  • lou11/08/2012 at 23:22

    I'm damn sure I couldn't do any of them. They're a sport.

hehehe so true. I'm not even sure any of us could do the speed walking, but i do feel like we should try ;)

  • Steven Roy11/08/2012 at 23:23

Depends where in the world you are. If you live in the Alps how much can it cost to dive off the top of a mountain on a tea tray?

  • Amy11/08/2012 at 23:23

hehehe so true. I'm not even sure any of us could do the speed walking, but i do feel like we should try ;)

should karting me an olympic sport yes! single seater motorsport of any kind. but f1 is about teams, not nations. a1gp could totally be a valid consideration had it not gone bankrupt.

  • Bassano11/08/2012 at 23:23

That is a very difficult and incredibly painful thing to do. It uses muscles that are not normally worked hard at all.

  • Bassano11/08/2012 at 23:24

i'm not arguing that horse dancing shouldn't be in the olympics? i'm arguing that golf should be, because something as mental as horse dancing is.

I don't think golf should be. I don't get why it is being added.

If motor sport is to get into the Olympics it would need to be karting so that enugh standard equipment would be available and so that the entry wasn't restricted to high level licence holders

  • Pat W11/08/2012 at 23:26

should karting me an olympic sport yes! single seater motorsport of any kind. but f1 is about teams, not nations. a1gp could totally be a valid consideration had it not gone bankrupt.

Agreed. F1 is a silly idea, but karting or a single make series would be no different from a class of sailing or bobsleigh. Maybe use the F2 cars which are centrally-operated and distribute them randomly, let a driver and his engineer figure it out in a practice then let 'em go.

You could even do a Motoring Pentathlon or something... One driver has to do karts, single seater, touring car, rally..

  • Mr C11/08/2012 at 23:26

I don't think golf should be. I don't get why it is being added.

how can tennis be okay and golf not?

  • lou11/08/2012 at 23:27

I'm not sure i'm a fan of motorsport being in the olympics, and i can't put my finger on exactly why.

  • Pat W11/08/2012 at 23:27

That is a very difficult and incredibly painful thing to do. It uses muscles that are not normally worked hard at all.

  • Steven Roy11/08/2012 at 23:28

Yes. You just start off half way down the run so you don't build up so much speed and keep your toes on the ground or pull the front up to dig the back in to slow you down. You don't start at the top of the Cresta run and just go for it at you first attempt

  • Bassano11/08/2012 at 23:28

how can tennis be okay and golf not?

    Tennis isn't ok :)

it just doesn't hold any water. if the IOC took that stance there would likely be less than a week's worth of sports left.

actually, much less. according to wikipedia:

    short competition.

  • Steven Roy11/08/2012 at 23:39

the question is then, if there's professional boxing, why isn't there professional boxing in the olympics? seems unfair.

Because professional boxers fight once every three months so it would take two years to get through all the rounds to the final

  • Amy11/08/2012 at 23:39

    *stunned*

i am biased towards race walking because nz used to have a guy who was awesome at it :D

I think they've done the right thing. Why should there be, in your eyes?

"As of 2004, the only sports in which no professionals compete are boxing and wrestling"

seems like they've been singled out?

  • Mr C11/08/2012 at 23:40

    hehe

GB is great at sitting down Olympics

    :)

  • Amy11/08/2012 at 23:43

    Bring it on GB :P

It is just not possible for professional boxers to fight often enough to do the Olympics and no-one will pay wrestlers

ahh, i don't understand then. what's the difference with pro boxing then? they look the same to me.

  • Amy11/08/2012 at 23:46

ahh, i don't understand then. what's the difference with pro boxing then? they look the same to me.

the difference is when pro boxers are doing their thing i am the only person on my twitter feed who doesn't appear to be watching. i don't get it.

  • Steven Roy11/08/2012 at 23:48

ahh, i don't understand then. what's the difference with pro boxing then? they look the same to me.

Amateur is 4 rounds of 2 minutes against 12 rounds of 3 minutes for the pros

Amateur boxing is scored on accuracy of punching where professionals are so much more powerful and there tend to be an awful lot more knock outs.

Pro boxers train for specific opponents much like F1 cars are tuned to a specific track where amateur have so many fights that isn't possible,

Also top pros expect to get a few million per fight which could get expensive if they have to fight 6 or 7 times in two weeks

  • Bassano11/08/2012 at 23:49

ahh, i don't understand then. what's the difference with pro boxing then? they look the same to me.

It's a sport least deserving of the term professional, I think the IOC steer well clear of it on purpose.

They can't even decide on what 'World Champion' means

  • Mr C11/08/2012 at 23:49

Also top pros expect to get a few million per fight which could get expensive if they have to fight 6 or 7 times in two weeks

interesting. so in theory they could be eligible, but they wouldn't want to anyway.

  • Pat W11/08/2012 at 23:49

Also top pros expect to get a few million per fight which could get expensive if they have to fight 6 or 7 times in two weeks

They wouldn't get paid for representing their country but they could get some lucrative sponsorship deals around it.

  • Bassano11/08/2012 at 23:50

interesting. so in theory they could be eligible, but they wouldn't want to anyway.

They simply couldn't survive the punishment they would take fighting that often in a short spell of time.

  • Mr C11/08/2012 at 23:51

They simply couldn't survive the punishment they would take fighting that often in a short spell of time.

but they'd be against the current amateurs, no?

  • Pat W11/08/2012 at 23:51

They simply couldn't survive the punishment they would take fighting that often in a short spell of time.

Nobody is saying they have to have the same number of rounds as their pro fights. They could use the am format at the Olympics.

  • Mr C11/08/2012 at 23:51

Nobody is saying they have to have the same number of rounds as their pro fights. They could use the am format at the Olympics.

    agreed.

  • Steven Roy11/08/2012 at 23:51

You want pros fighting amateurs? The pros would kill them

  • Mr C11/08/2012 at 23:52

You want pros fighting amateurs? The pros would kill them

huh? are they like a super race of humans or something?

Nobody is saying they have to have the same number of rounds as their pro fights. They could use the am format at the Olympics.

But their bodies are not suitable for that. When they leave the amateurs they bulk up to build the endurance needed for the pro fights. It would be like asking Usain Bolt to run the marathon

  • Mr C11/08/2012 at 23:53

Evening. Just catching up as we had to make a trip to hospital earlier (everything is fine).

  • Rubbergoat11/08/2012 at 23:57

I think so. They were sponsored to be painted for charity or something.

    Paddling is a sport?

Aerodynamics below 30/40mph ain't an issue

  • Rubbergoat12/08/2012 at 00:32

newey has been moonlighting, i swear.

Don't joke. He wanted to design an Americas cup yacht and a land speed record attempt.

  • Rubbergoat12/08/2012 at 00:32

    Clearly you don't cycle then.

Before he joined Red Bull, Yachts were his next thing

i dunno what it's called. but there's a man in a boat paddling...

    it must have some benefit.

    True.

  • Bassano12/08/2012 at 00:34

Its negligible, even more so on water.§

I must disagree. Position makes a big difference as does wind direction.

  • Bassano12/08/2012 at 00:34

I guess to a hundredth of a second, yes

Aerodynamic form, not the laws of aerodynamics

  • Mr C12/08/2012 at 00:35

may it stops water getting in.

  • Bassano12/08/2012 at 00:36

Probably. A fairing a paddling knots ain't gonna change much

  • Rubbergoat12/08/2012 at 00:36

Aerodynamic form, not the laws of aerodynamics

    What do you mean?

I guess I'm trying to say I use more or less energy if the wind is in my favour.

  • Rubbergoat12/08/2012 at 00:36

    How fast are the kayakers?

That's an opposing force rather than streamlining

  • Pat W12/08/2012 at 00:37

Dozing off, it must be bedtime.

Bassano I will see you tomorrow, should be fun. :) Train gets in at 12.50 so I will grab some lunch at Waterloo then make my way over. Travelling light as I don't want to bother carrying a bag about the place, so no ipad to read/listen to on the train..

  • Rubbergoat12/08/2012 at 00:37

Exactly. So even though aero may make little difference, if you can reduce your drag you must save a bit if energy?

But aerodynamic streamlining has negligible effects at low speeds.

Due to the V squared portion of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drag_equation

As velocity increases, the drag effect become much more important

    Canoeing/kayaking

The aerodynamic cover is called a spraydeck and it is to stop water getting in the boat

Ah thanks, maybe I'll bring my little radio then, if they are still on 1215MW..

    Have blur got back together?

A few years ago for comeback gig in Hyde Park (I was there, coolest gig ever). One last hurrah Sunday night and they're done.

maybe he really likes doing barrel rolls

    nooooooooooo!

    forward high jump.

  • Steven Roy12/08/2012 at 00:44

ah-ha. so our guy doesn't like getting wet?

I only sat in a kayak once and it didn't have one. I was fine until I started thinking about how I was balancing it shen it started to tip over. Lack of spraydeck then resulted in me being deposited head first in cold Scottish water.
