To steal a phrase from John Inverdale, we're into the pre-penultimate day of Olympics action. Time has flown, but we still have three glorious days to enjoy so let's not get maudlin yet! Medals up for grabs today include: Relay and longer distance finals in the Athletics, tons of Men's Boxing, BMXing, Men's Football and Women's Hockey, Men's and Women's 470 sailing, the 10k swimming marathon for the men, Synchronised Swimming, Taekwondo, and Men's freestyle wrestling.
London 2012, Day 14
Published by Christine Blachford on
Today's Doodle = Saving (Football) Penalties At least this one doesn't require button-bashing.
Right, a super-slo-mo 10k complete, I can now sit on the sofa all day guilt-free. Olympics-fest here we come.
First up on BBC1, canoes and kayaks. I remember what the difference is but don't remember which is which. I'm guessing canoes are the open ones and kayaks are not.
Men's marathon swimming today too. Two hours of swimming is so long!
Kerrianne Payne has her knee all strapped up after yesterday's big swimmo.
My word, the kneeling position for this rowing does not look good at all!
Is it wrong that I'm sat on the sofa eating cold pizza while watching guys do this?
Noo, they do it so you don't have to.
That looks so unstable. How can they get away with paddling on one side only?
During the end portion of the stroke the paddle acts as like a rudder as if to steer depending on the angle it is pulled at etc.
You know everything Mr Will, I'm glad we have you around :)
What can I say, I am a knowledge sponge. Nothing I know is really relevant though.
It's good though, because people like you can prop up people like me who retain nothing!
I think a kayak has two paddles and a canoe one?
That could make sense. I like the double ended one cos they do a windmill action. Fun!
Wow, cool! Thanks for the info :)
Fast and furious!
Did anyone spot the camera tha Bolt borrowed last night? http://www.petapixel.com/2012/08/09/usain-bolt-nabs-photographers-dslr-snaps-awesome-pov-shots/
Ooh, genuine lensflare.
I thought that was brilliant!
Sailing now. Another strangely fascinating sport!
:) Now that is something I have more than just a passing knowledge of ;)
Have switched to the men's swimming marathon. Three minutes in, long way to go!
Basically, if the GB 470 boys has 1 or more boats between them an the Aussies, we win Gold.
go the aussies, good to see some sailing for gold today.
1st Mark - GBR, CRO, AUS = overall GBR, AUS, ARG
are you watching live or on a slight delay?
Online, so maybe 20s delay.
no worries i wont rush to post results if it is close.
I've got the ISAF results centre open so I can follow the overall without having to do the calculations every mark rounding, but that is about 30s slower than my feed to update.
that was hilarious, what a showman. it would have been awesome if all the crowd did his lightning bolt celebration as he took a photo.
That would have been!
This needs sorting for after the 4x100m relay.
ha, i was just about to type that.
2nd Mark - AUS, CRO, GBR, = AUS, GBR, ARG (forgot to post)
Brilliant tactics by the Aussies there
3rd Mark - CRO, AUS, ARG, GBR = AUS, GBR, ARG
Ohh no, penalty, too much pumping, looks like the chances have slipped.
Finish - CRO, AUS, ARG, GBR = AUS gold, GBR silver, ARG bronze.
gooooooooooooold, both teams seem pretty happy
You guys sailed a pretty well thought out race, not to mention being rather fast also!
David Walliams is at the swimming. He should be in there!
Catching up with yesterday's BMXing. Three races, two crashes, one pileup. Blimey.
more sailing now, this time its gb v new zealand, i will have to support the fellow anzacs from just over the tasman sea.
That leaves me 'having' to support the Brits then.
Good job. Well done on winning the mens race ;)
Silver - still a very good regatta
Getting towards the end of the swimming, leader is out in front but there's scrapping going on behind him. Amazing there can still be close battles after 100 minutes of swimming.
woah they just mentioned that over the course of the open water season they have 5 km and 25 km races. thats just insane, must take over 4 hours to swim that far.
Tunisia get the gold.
That's mad, they must turn into prunes in the water for that long!
GB came fifth after coming back from nowhere. Not bad.
We've currently got the rhythmic gymnastics (not my choice) on - impressive all the same
I had a peek at some but those people are far too bendy. I don't trust them.
Bendy being the operative word.
It's struck me that this is essentially human-dressage.
I'd like to see a horse with a hoop.
Ireland boxer gets into final. They could get two boxing golds!
The ribbons are good.
finland up 1-0 v the aussies in the head to head womes elliott semi finals, in 14 head to head races proir to today the aussie girls have won 13 out of the 14 races, but need to win the next race otherwise there is real pressure to win the best of 5 semi final.
Looks like there's some BMXing on the way.
What a crazy sport. Looking forward to this.
Watching from behind the sofa though, in case they all fall down. Which is quite likely!
Local tabloid here in Denmark proclaimed the sport is too dangerous for the Olympics. Tosh.
It's amazing viewing, but some of the injuries they were talking about earlier do sound horrific. I wouldn't ban it or anything but there must be some safety work can be done.
yes some bmx action, a real fan favourite i think, everyone i have talked to has loved watching the sport over the last couple of days..
They didn't use the underground bit yesterday. I wonder if that's because it is the women or if it's the semi-finals.
oops looks like there is an injury in the second race, the stretcher is out
the mens and womens courses are different, the men have this extra twisty bit that goes over the tunnel,
Yea, it looks a bit longer.
Phillips in second as there is a big crash behind.
Ooh, I found some synchronised swimming.
Australia rocking the pool to AC/DC.
you made me change the channel, but i just missed it.
womens hockey about to start, nz v gb for the bronze medal.
They hold their breath for so long!
I am oddly hooked by this synchro stuff.
Spain are incredible at it. Who knew?
Right, back to bbc1 after crazy pool dancing.
we know alonso is good at creating waves, does that count?
I don't know if this is repeats or new BMX stuff, but it's fun anyway. I like the people that know they are last so just faff about across the line.
Damn - missed all the BMX semis, will have to catch up with those after the finals.
Whenever they say the rhythm section, it makes me think of the purple gang.
Have any of the girls got stuck down the bomb-hole?
I've seen this guide to BMX three times now. I must be an expert.
one off race for gold now in the bmx
Exciting!!
Only 1 run - pressure.
No crashes in this one. Phew!
She didn't get the start and so almost gave up - saving herself from crashing I suppose.
She says the schedule is a bit tough, back to back laps.
I'd agree, but it is the same for everyone though.
True enough.
Men up now.
C'on Liam
Neither her nor Liam have done much competing this season apparently, but it seemed like it was just the start that really killed her final.
come on sam, dont blow the start like the last final
Ouch for Liam
Hope that doesn't his collar bone! That's just like Shenaze last Olympics.
Yay for Australia silver!
booo silver. blew the start in both finals the aussies.
oh, booo silver. my bad.
He just came unclipped and went backwards through the field - not a good day for our BMXers all round
yeah silvers alright.
That Oquendo guy keeps coming out of nowhere, in the semi and the final too.
Need to work on stamina, I guess? Seem to have good pace and skill but only at the start of the day!
Didn't notice that crash on the final corner. Tough to get so near, yet so far.
It is a big thing to have it all one 1 run, esp after so many runs in the quali sessions.
"Go big or go home"
Mm. I have been wondering about how it seems not quite Olympic to have the big group tournaments like football and tennis, when a lot of other events are sort of qualify and then one shot at a medal.
This is like the complete opposite to the point where it's more luck than skill to get to the end unscathed!
yeah the results are so random in a one off race they probably should have a three race series for a final, or even an elimination race like at the velodrome, where the last two drop out, then the last three, and end up with the final three racing for the medals.
My exact feeling. Football last 90 minutes etc, whereas this lasts 90s - and that's for the guys that have crashed but still finish.
Definitely best of 3 at least, but I do like the elim idea. That would defos produce the best rider for Gold.
Aussie 470 boys celebrating their win: http://t.co/LCaCKfGE
Looks like we managed bronze in the hockey.
Well doe to our girls, let's see if the boys can do similar in theirs
Some retro and random Lego F1 racing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8Ln9hkXPlc
that must have taken them hours to make that
Rumour: It sounds like the Spice Girls are going to be at the closing ceremony. With George Michael, 1 Direction, Tinie Tempah, ... playing some kinds of role. #Spoilers
Afternoon/Evening all. Watching the Men's Handball Semis w/ SWE up by 2.
Check that, SWE up 3 in the 2nd Half
Evening. I have some basketball on. Not as excited by the basketball as I thought I would be. Quite liked the indoor volleyball earlier though.
For those who want to flooow along...
http://www.london2012.com/handball/event/men/match=hbm400201/index.html?v=2012012081017
Follow, even
I have found that through the games. Basketball has not grabbed me although I have watched about 4 full volleyball games
Doder looked like he was about to go Donald Duck on the official.
FIFA Europe might have some issues come time for the Euroleague Final 4 next year, you reckon?
The dangers of wearling low-tops in Team Handball.
Fixed since it's a Basketball event and not football --;;;
Less than 9:30 to go with SWE up 24-21 over HUN
OW! That's definitely a 2 minute penalty.
Nice Fast-break goal for HUN
Nice save
And another Fast Break goal to boot forcing SWE to call a time out.
Looks like the resin on the ball played a big part in that goal.
Huingary tried to tie it up, but failed that time.
Penalty to SWE
Offensive Foul on Hungary
Now the Hungary coach gets a Yellow Card.
Just turned over to the handball. If they can run with the ball, why do they bounce it?
3 steps, but i think a bounce resets that.
Ahh, okay.
Handball rules styate you must dribble the ball every three steps and up to three time. Also, you cannot hold the ball for more than three seconds.
Which explains all the throwing and catching in the same team.
Lob shot hits the crossbar!
SWE gets some breathing room
2 minutes to go
Zubai with the diving shot. 1 goal game again
GREAT SAVE
Methinks I heard the Mission: Impossible theme play in the arena.
SWE calls TImeout
Things with timeouts really annoy me.
Sweden win!
If you get the chance, whatch the match in full from the start. :)
Sweden will face the winner of the France Croatia match which will happen at the bottom of the next hour(20:30 London time).
Opposite of speed sporting
Evening. Just watching the end of Spain v Russia basketball.
Sweden wins. Kai will be happy
I find the first 2 or 3 quarters hardly worth watching but it can get interesting in the final quarter.
Looking in as well before I get something to eat.
So what's the consensus for this evening's watching? TomDaley / the stadium / other?
First canoeing I have seen.
Stadium definitely for me, lots of track finals
Surely a spraydeck would be more aerodynamic. Exposed knees in a kayak look weird. And I know from my one personal experience you only need to get slightly wobbly before it fills up with water and dumps you on your head
I have to wait and see what Gary says.
Wise - and then the other will make it to another screen.
Exactly :)
spain win the basketball over russia, they will meet the winner of the usa v argentina match later, or should just say they will play the usa, i thought russia might be the one team that could get near the americans but spain shut them right out in the second half and made it hard for them to score.
we have two defending gold medalists from the 2008 olympics up tonight, steve hooker in the pole vault and mathew mitcham in the 10m platform diving, i doubt either will do so well this year but who knows mitcham is more likely to do well but i doubt either will go back to back.
The GB lady hammer thrower used to be a ballet dancer? You wouldn't have thought those two things went hand in hand.
How does a female ballet dancer become a hammer thrower? Surely those require entirely different physiques
Last night of live athletics for me, I'm out tomorrow night so will miss the last competition evening of the Games. :( Perhaps will be back in time for Olympics Tonight.
i wonder what makes an athlete think, yeah ill try he pole vault, it seems very strange to me, running up chucking a pole in the ground then flinging yourself up backwards 5-6 meters in the air, no thanks, not for me, probably snap my neck on the first attempt.
I imagine the spinny-twisty-turny-thingy they do when the wind up the throw might borrow a few ballet skills.
If Tom is just qualifying, I might stick with the stadium and wait for the highlights they are bound to show us later.
We looked at the start list - it is very long, relays it is.
I always wondered how people started to learn pole vaulting. Do they start with a little pole or a big pole? Do they start with the bar 1, 2 or 3 metres high? I just can't imagine what the first few vaults look like.
I'd guess that you'd find it hard to get enough bend on a short pole.
Jamaica with a huge lead, as per normal.
Almost out of camera shot they are so far ahead
Great battle behind them though.
Yay for pole vaulting!
The crowd seem really pumped up today, for everyone.
these relays ae really fun to watch.
the russians doing well
Bit of barging going on there.
GB go through. Good battle at the front of that one.
that was basically americas b team and they still look the strongest
Tom dives now
Bit splashy on entry - nervous & energetic.
Just turned over in time. If you could keep that up all night... :)
I'll try ;) Diving has been designated as the main sport for the evening, with changing over for the relays. (Of course I've got BBC1 on in front of me). #multitasking
Tom 18th after one dive.
At least there are a good few rounds for him to make it count. And this is only Quali, so he can get his nerves out of the way before nailing a medal. (Positive thinking :) )
4x100 men's relay soon.
Awful change for GB
Bad baton change :S
Still 2nd though
Poor final relay handover for GB!
Were we over the change-over line?
Looks like it
Terrible!
Damn
Yep.. will be a DQ
Gemili show his inexperience - seemed to go out rather fast. Big shame.
And a bad connection by both -
Has to be said Gemili is a very good lad - one to watch :)
They keep showing the replay of it, and I keep seeing the one behind mouthing a swear :)
Got soap?
Japan were amazing!
Watching the KOR - JPN Men's Football Bronze Medal match
Jamaica v USA going for gold then, I can't see anyone else in it..
So who does Ladbrokes tip for the Bronze?
And of the two, it has to be Jamaica.
Agreed. Heavy Favorite.
Jamaica's 4th runner would have to be pretty hopeless to lose with the other three
TOM
:) thank you!
Phew - they don't give you much warning.
I got there. He seems to have a secondary splashing problem.
I looked at that for about two minutes before I figured out what it meant. Two minutes was too long
Will is being our diving eyes.
He should become a football referee
:)
Tom in 15th after R2 (top 18 qualify)
A little bit better, but we want more!
Women's 5k about to go, lots of runners who did the 10k
A lot of the other guys are looking very good tonight (good then that the scores don't carry over).
Paved heads straight to the front.
Pavey, even.
Book 'em Dan-o
MINI just zipped by with the runners
"24' Yellow Card KI Sungyueng (KOR) is cautioned by the referee.
Does it have a onboard camera?
Evening!
Which event are we following?
The ballet dancer threw the hammer into the net.
Athletics with bonus diving on occasion.
Athletic dancing then, at a guess :)
Sounds good, thanks
It's a new event, quite niche... :)
JPN - KOR Bronze Medal Men's Football match here until the second Men's Handball Semifinal
I still have never seen one of those yet.
Just had a quick look round all the events that are on and the only one I have not seen discussed here is wrestling. So for anyone collecting new sports that is for you
Nono - it was behind them, but driving with speed. If anyone is on BBC online feed, go back to 01:03:30. It may reapper if we watch carefully.
GOAL! ??
Thank God for nets, huh?
:)
Nope, foul.
Offside again
Saw the replay, Yeah, that looked dangerous. re: Sakai's foul for Dangerous Play
Wonder how many MINI's it takes to take the vaulting poles back?
1, but it might be more of a MAXI
Maxi's used to breakdown every 5 yards
Equipped with a drag racing Wheelie Bar
Is that a car, I was being obtuse ;)
I love hearing African names in a North West England accent, distance running wouldn't be the same without it.
http://www.aronline.co.uk/images/maxi_01.jpg
Retro
Austin Maxi. There is a reason why the Mini is world famous and the Maxi is not.
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_vPlRdsfZg4g/TQoRz40-0zI/AAAAAAAADKc/Hp6SEnGTPYs/s1600/Austin+Maxi+1750+HL+side.jpg
I think it was retro on launch ;)
Equally retro.
Amazed to see one that isn't grey or beige
Uh oh, here we go...
Here goes Dibaba
Or rust
Final lap, go, go, go.
35' Yellow Card KOO Jacheol (KOR) is cautioned by the referee.
The pole vaulter fell over right next to them
I half expect Usain Bolt to come steaming past :)
Well raced
Impressive final straight
A rather reckless foul for Koo. And that wasn't cool.
Brits essentially best of the rest, good for them. Great finish, very close on the home straight!
Just wide with the hader from Sakai off of the corner kick
*switches to Hockey*
38th minute JPN 0 - 0 KOR
But Park Soo Yong just scored!
Just flicked to diving to see someone do an inward 4.5 somersault. Scary and amazing
7th and 8th in both the 10k and 5k, not too bad against tough competition
And some prat using an iPad as a camera
In the tuck position, I bet.
KOR 1 - 0 JPN at the Millenium Stadium 40th minute
I love that the pole vault is so high, the jumpers have time to celebrate on the way down.
Almost 2 - 0 KOR as Sukyoung Yung missed a shot.
Has anyone been seeing any Rugby Sevens activity in London recently?
Imagine if it was on the moon. They would go an awful lot higher and it would take 6 times as long to come down from the same height
'pparently, it's Mr C's fave camera now :)
'OHGIHARA Takahiro (JPN) is cautioned by the referee.'
Probably for retaliation for earlier.
Injury time imminent.
TomD
Dive! Dive! Dive!
Tom time
Looked v nice.
Great dive
Got klaxons?
They've stolen it off my TV!
They moved from 453 to 452
AirPlay it! :)
Halftime at the Millenium Stadium
KOR 1-0 JPN
Looks like he dives once every 30 minutes
PeteW just nailed a v tricky dive = comeback?
TomD - up to 9th
I can't imagine the royalty cheque Queen will receive for the We Will Rock You excerpts at this Olympics
How can they be 5 metres out measuring the hammer. It's on TV they should be able to calculate the distance
I don't have channels that high!
Nah, delay is too great. Have made use of that extensively over the past two weeks though :)
They are superimposing coloured lines on the ground. Mr C will become obsessed for hours again like he did with American football
Well they switched it from one channel to another then.
I watched a video that explained exactly how they did that - v interesting
Does Freeview have a multitude of channels or just a small few?
Mr C and I spent most of a match researching that on the net. Did the same for the software that tracks pitches in baseball. Sports look differently when you watch with Mr C
I have BBC1 HD, BBC HD (which is BBC3) and then what I think is the red button but I just go direct to the channel.
Fixed
;)
So no extra channels on freeview [the 300s]?
Unbelievably true.
Two red buttons on Freeview: 301 and 302
They were also explaining how they used to do it almost mecanically before computers would do all the work for you - by knowing camera angle, tilt, and a whole load of distances.
Run run run !!!
Big win for USA, WR!
I think the only extra is 304 which is just the HD version of the existing 301.
USA had that won after 150 metres
What's the next 'big' event tonight?
Hockey is unusually fascinating
Bah!
oh, 302 is where the diving is. How long has that been there? Wasn't there in the first few days, not on mine anyways :)
Though Amy is right, the blue astroturf looks like wet carpet
Maybe this?
http://www.london2012.com/handball/event/men/match=hbm400202/index.html?v=2022012081020
I'll take any extra HD channels they want to throw at us!
It is wet though.
Since a few weeks before the Olympics for me but it might've needed a rescan, so depends when you last did one
That's because they water it down before the start of the game and at halftime
At least you have Freeview HD. My second telly is HD ready but nor Freeview HD
Did that, the TV was quite insistent. How odd. I must have missed so much!!
Anyone else spot / go back to spot this MINI from earlier? http://t.co/vAzLl9cF
My box can do HD but my TV can't. The picture does look better.. although it sometiems shows a black screen. Maybe the box isn't as good as it should be.
One of them had a lot of beach volleyball, maybe it was that one
Ohh I give up trying to see one!
Crazy dutch fans
http://twitter.com/bassanoclapper/status/234013025668038656/photo/1
New world record but the baton changes were no good - Michael Johnson.
How fast could they go if they were not hopeless
It's the Blue Man Group in orange
I just asked Mr C about the secret channel and he said he knew it was there but dismissed it because it wasn't HD. Stoopid man.
A couple of Vancouver Canucks fans dress up like that too, but in teal.
I refer my honourable colleague to my earlier point ;)
2nd half between Korea and Japan underway
John Inverdale. Everyone remembers the 1984 Olympics in LA for the spaceman at the opening ceremony.
Really? Surely the Soviet boycott was a bigger story
Amy lands in about half an hour by the way, we may see Wenlock weep
Ah ha :)
I didn't know she had left
Agreed
Not as cool though
who spends hundreds of pounds on a high definition television and then watches an SD signal? stooopid people ;)
True. Spaceman was very cool
Sales of Fanta may never recover
That's always a mindblowingly long journey, it was earlier than this time yesterday when she left.
Do you know they have lines on the ground on the TV picture in the hammer just like American football?
When there's not an HD one :)
People who want to watch a broadcast that isn't in HD*?
.
.
.
.
.
*everyone
:)
TOM is next.
We left London at 18:15 for a 22:00 flight. It tends to be 24-26 hours, depending on the mid-journey leg-stretch and refuel
there is always a hd one. it's the olympics, the bbc are streaming 24 channels on the ipad in hd.
i need to see that. is it as good?
How is this not common now? This was nearly 30 years ago. Kids should have them by now
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBCetGNwwtM
Apparently the order I'm looking at is not the one that is being followed - sorry.
Apparently, it's incompatible with SidepodTime. Einstein had a thesis on it but he spilt coffee on it
It's... the hammer. With lines. Just that really
Looks good to me
ahh, there is that problem. my choice we be to swich off the comments, rather than switch to sd.
didn't mean to leave christine bereft of tv channels, but i really thought it was pointless.
Shh. I have distracted him from annoying Christine
#confidential
Health & Safety legislation started sticking up for stupidity
But Will was being my diving eyes, that would be silly!
#apologies
That must be a full-time position, does it pay well?
Just in time. Goooo Lisa!
Not enough
Requires effort to look through 24 channels.
i wish the bbc had a channel, that showed all the channels.
Surprisingly, not as much as you think with picture in picture tv guide
Pacemakers should be banned in all athletics to make people think about tactics
Korea strikes again!
Like that screen thing they keep showing that you love.
i need that, but with pressable squares so you go from there to what you want.
Just read down the list
http://skyplustv.sky.com/tv-guide#/onnow
I dislike that they keep calling this crazy pace "jogging".
Goo lisa! I want a nice gold post box in town :)
Ashford athlete?
Ooh one of them was knocked over
She looked like she was thrown out of a car door
TOM IS DEFINITELY NEXT THIS TIME
i would also like a wenlock-cam channel.
*bounces*
Doesn't Murdoch put that behind a paywall? ;)
yep! a friend of a friend as well, they go running together
#smallworld
No idea
Did you see Amy's Wenlock?
chocolate?
oohhh yes! i would like that too!
4.5 somersaults is crazy
Wow!
One more dive from Tom just before 9:30
no post box for us :( sad times, she did well tho!
Turkeys first ever medal?
ohhhh can you let us know before hand, i've missed all of his other ones and feel unsupportive.
That was the flight.
Cuddly one: http://twitpic.com/agxk6x
Key Ring one: http://twitpic.com/agxlh2
omg!
Jenson has closed his restaurant
http://www.harrogate-news.co.uk/2012/08/05/jenson-buttons-victus-restaurant-closes-after-less-than-a-year-of-trading/
oh my god! i want them both!
She wanted the Policeman one but I like the Irish Guard Wenlock more
John Lewis, apparently
and before i got to go too! how inconsiderate! ;)
Tom up to 7th after 4/6 dives
it's scary how much Lisa sounds like someone i used to go to school with!
If he was an investor and not the owner, is it fair to call it his?
5.91m is getting scary high
it's a good job we don't have one of those locally or i'd be going there in the morning :)
Depends what his share was. His name was used to sell it too
Like Bluewater?
he needs lessons in sidepodplugging. has he ever tweeted about it?
I've only just learned that the poles are the athlete's. not standard issue
I didn't know it existed
bluewater is ages away compared to a quick nip to the shops. plus bluewater in the heat = nooooooo! tempted to go to the beach! :)
Well, the article calls him an investor so I'm think it was minor.
Shoulda got Alex to plug it
I heard that on the radio this morning. I think athletes should be approaching F1 teams to get mega poles made
http://sidepodcast.com/post/tv-chats-and-restaurant-openings-on-christines-rankings-this-week
Aircon, no?
yeah, and jessy did once too i think.. the launch was well publicized ... i think?
I imagine there's an offical spec without DRS
I think it is more likely his friend was the chef and Jenson and his management put up most of the money
i have no aircon in the car. silly car. :(
Obviously not enough, or it didn't cut the mustard
You have windows! IU meant in Bluewater :)
No matter, the sea is much nicer in August
i do have windows, but it's still hot :( but the moment it rains... i'm there to get my wenlock :D
Why else would it be in Harrogate?
Lots of money in Harrogate. And a lot less competition than in London.
@Lou
Perseid meteor shower Saturday and Sunday nights.
I need a pop-up on the BBC online feed to say: The Comments are watching this, would you like to switch channels?
But not a lot of customers, it seems
yes i know! starts tonight right? I'm very excited. Mum and I are even debating going up to the hills later to get an amazing view of the sky (it's dark enough here, but the view will be awesome!)
Saw that, are there any UK sights with directions/times, etc. ?
Was thinking of taking my mini-tripod to a tall, dark hill tomorrow night
Everyone saying that was a weird and disappointing 1500 race.
But it says lots of other new restautrants have succeeded. They needed Gordon Ramsey to turn up and bin 75% of the menu, make dishes simpler, specialise in something and tart the place up a little
i follow these people on twitter and they are awesome.
https://twitter.com/VirtualAstro
do it!! :)
Ta
I imagine there will be some tonight but there will be a lot more Saturday and Sunday
http://www.meteorwatch.org got Leo'd I think
20 seconds slower than WR and a drug cheat won.. but for me that's racing. I think they are disappointed because of Lisa.
THe Earth is flying through a load of space rocks and it takes a few days to clear them. So sightings are totally random over the few days it takes
ahhh.. well when it's up it's great, but their twitter always keeps me up to date with fun things like this :)
But Southerly, Notherly or everywhere?
Carmelita Jeter: "I knew we were going to come out here and run fast, we just had to get the stick around!"
pretty much everywhere i think. they recommend taking a blanket, tea and laying on the floor and just looking up. That's what i did last year anyway and saw loads :)
More relay!
Oh by the way I got a tweet to say the ISS is coming over at 21.59, your local time may vary.
Men's 4x400 relay final.. I'm saying Jamaica, USA, GB. Unless GB mess up the baton again.
this the guy with the broken leg?
relay is so stressful to watch, 4 people have to get it totally right!
GB have such a long history of not getting the stick round
It's brilliant :)
3 pit stops in 4 minutes
I think they replaced him
Cool, ta :)
can you do that? damn.
the pressure!! :) so fun tho! Those American ladies in their relay were amazing!!
These guys stops are faster than any F1 team
100% failure rate this year, with women and men either not finishing or being disqualified.
Jack Green is our 400m hurdler
Shows what I know, Jamaica aren't even in it
Michael Johnson said their handovers were bad
Cuba stopped
Is that like a gearbox change?
Dai Greene going backwards
That's what a night of heavy drinking does t... oh never mind
yeah i saw, but their running was amazing! imagine if their handovers had been perfect!
ruuuuuuuuuuuun
:)
in sight ,....
Come on BAH!
Goes back years, they should get McLaren's pit stop troubleshooters in
..... forest... runnnnnnnn!
sorry.. i had to.
gah!
that was awesome
Wow! Great running!
I can't wait for the 4x100 tomorrow!
What a win, right at the end
I prefer the short sprints to the 400+
GB men swearing again. Tut tut.
when was the last time the USA didn't win?
Did he just say they've won it 16 times??
Yes
i think last night they said USA have won it since they've competed in it. could be wrong tho.
I think two divers before you know who
right, i have switched over
Nahh - this guy is #22, Tom is #29 on the start list
I have to have time to find the right channel ;)
Fail for my memory then.
http://www.london2012.com/diving/event/men-10m/index.html?v=20120810-212611349Lower list is the dive-order, upper list is live timing (habit, scores).
the divers ability to just jump out of the pool puts me to shame, i've always been a bit rubbish at pulling myself out of the pool gracefully.
Thats why they put steps in.
:)
JPN just had a goal disallowed due to a foul on the Korean goalkeeper.
I"m A LOT rubbish at pretty much everything to do with a pool.
How odd.
@clarebalding1
I’m hearing that NBC have been asked to leave the boxing arena because the judges are upset by their commentary. Anyone know more?
Clare Balding @clarebalding1

It's all in the shoulders and back
And kicking good and hard helps too
Tom after this guy.
First TED News, now TOM News. :)
Thrust never hurts, unless a mountain is in front of you
#PilotSpeak
SIDEPODKAXXXXXON!
Rubbish
They have a ledge to help them too.
Uhoh
He's not really on form lately, is he? Pressure?
the commentator tells me that wasn't great. bad times for Tom.
Big splash = bad dive
He was almost flat on his back when he hit the water
they are cheating! At school they used to force us to get out at the side, no steps or help for us.. we were all rubbish.
Bad TOM News
Has anyone done a Luganis this year?
Bad JPN news as well
Full TIme from the Millenium Stadium
KOR 2-0 JPN
Korea win the Bronze Medal in Men's Football

I heard the girl boxer who won last night on radio this morning. I thought she was about 18 but she is actually 29
the British girl? Wow!
ouuuccchhh!
Yup - Feck - see yesterday's comments for a link.
I think I'd like an Olympics at GMT +4hrs, it's too quiet after 22:00
Ideal time zone
nice quote 'not enough splash to fill a teacup' :)
Soichi 2014 should be in Prime SidepodTime
Rio will be ideal
By which time, I expect SidepodTV in HD with onscreen commenting :)
It's the wrong way. We need US east coast games
Rio will be better wont it? they must be like... 4-5 hours behind us?
Damn rotational miscalculations
Philippe Bugalski has died.
Sorry it's in French. It says they don't know how he died
http://www.rallye-sport.fr/philippe-bugalski-est-decede-ce-vendredi/
Brazil is only 3 hours behind us
oh wow that's not as big a difference as i thought!
Give Christine 2 extra years to raise the lottery funds
Time zones and sidepodcast just don't work
There is lottery funding to the tune of £165 million available tonigh
Rio is 4hrs, according to Siri
Cos Brazil sticks out a bit
"helicopter legs" !!
Crofty would be proud :)
Sao Paulo was 3 hours behind when I was there. Maybe different in the winter?
Still 4hrs now, I imagine they don't need daylight savings in [our] though
ISS will be over UK just before 10pm. Should be visible for 5 minutes. Loads of good long sightings in the next couple of weeks
*Summer
Watching Hockey medal ceremony, I heard Sebb Blatter got boos at the stadium last night :)
After putting England third in the world rankings too. And Brazil were 13th.
Figure that out
Christine's Rankings > FIFA
a friend was working at the hockey earlier in the week, and apparently in the interval of the final all of the games makers are going to gather in the pitch and do the wenlock olympic dance. They've been practicing and everything. I hope it gets televised!
Christine's Rankings > FIFA > Castol
*Castrol
There's a dance, I bet Amy knows it!
That guys name... Christopher Ekilsson. I was sure it was the Doctor.
RE NFL and their drawing of down-lines on the screen. I assume you came up with this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1st_%26_Ten_(graphics_system) I've been looking for the video on nfl.com that I've seen, but no look tonight.
yep! they played it at the tennis when it was raining, but apparently they play the video at the interval of the hockey and other things too. The officials at the tennis were dancing along to it in the rain when we went. :)
its really hard! Have had the song that goes with it in my head for days though
hehe! i think they're going to release the video on youtube after the games are over so you can learn it then! ;)
I also LOVE all your wenlocks Amy!
We went through 1st and 10's website etc
What kind of boy band fan are you?
Is the Dutch National Anthem A Partridge In A Pear Tree?
Absolutely perfect view of the ISS. It is at its highest point right now
Tom's final dive soon.
After this guy ;)
oh come on Tom, you can do this!
Much better
That was okay!
phew!!
needs >80
Bugger, distracted by a celebratory, jumping Dutch Hockey team
#Understandable
Tom qualified
ah he's qualified. that's good then.
Q (Only 3 after him anyway)
boy bands repeat moves, the mascot dance tries to cram moves representing about 40 sports into 2 minutes
Possibly the cleanest view I've ever had of it.
Some Olympic FanGirl you are! ;)
#LightPolluted here
It's no Macarena
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iuI8SizQYnA
Definitely the best I have seen since the assembly was finished. There is a 4, 5 or 6 minute sighting every day until August 22nd
http://spaceflight1.nasa.gov/realdata/sightings/
Sign language, obviously
"Eat Big Macs, Pay With Visa, Watch on Panasonic TVs"
From what I got via translation, it was injuries suffered in a fall. :(
Samsung. I was nearly deafened by the music from their truck at the torch relay :)
I'm now watching basketball. Arg v USA.
USA are quite good.
Arg 57 - USA 76
9:32 to go
Tomorrow's schedule for planners: http://www.london2012.com/schedule-and-results/day=11-august/all-day.html

I *really* like the curved, concrete diving platforms this year
I was looking for a spec vid, the search continues tomorrow
A search through the sidepodcast archives should find the orignal conversation Mr C and I had which will give you loads of info
Convo starts here

One UK ticket holder won £148.6 million on the Euromillions

wh Smith at the airport had acuddly policeman one on display but they were sold out. Didn't see one anywhere so policeman must have been most popular

Bobby Wenlock a big seller. :)
I heard we saw a Mars Sunrise
How wide is your televisual periscope? ;)
...about the OLYMPICS!
;)

loving the bmx, one of my fav 'new' sports.
I'd give Curiousity a Gold for that.
#ToughCrowd
Imagine the hurdles!
i... don't know enough about it to know what that means. #wrongcrowd
so, most dangerous sports in the olympics - hockey and bmx?
Cycling in general. Hockey does deserve a place n the conversation as well.
most blood spilt this year seems to be in hockey.
Give Blood, Play Hockey :)
:)
Low gravity, reaaaaallllyyyy long 'hup'

There is one every 24 and a half hours
Great shot too
team gb hockey team sound absolutely chuffed with today's medal. total contrast to yesterday.
I missed yesterday's action
Awarded bronze in person is easier in hindsight than losing the match to fight for gold though
good point.
Nice. :)
Not winning sucks but realising that you are the 3rd best IN THE WHOLE WORLD is another story
Just saw the end of the Women's Gold Medal Hockey Match. Headline should read like the following
Double Dutch is Not Just For Jumping Ropes Anymore
:D
I presume I am watching Diving highlights online and all the Olympic Athletes are queuing for Chicken McNuggets right now
The Olympic Park McDonalds is like Duffy's Tavern(old-time radio show from the US)
It's where the Olympics Elite Meet to Eat. ;)
Nope, Duffy ain't here... :D
I have it on good authority that the athletes are completely pigging out [and have been all week] cos it ain't gonna hurt now
and now i'm up-to-date. cheers all. same again tomorrow :)
Ciao
Have a good night. :)
One more day of full-on competition
[Sunday, surely doesn't count due to flags, flames and concerts]
not a lot of interesting events/cheap tickets left in the last few days, plus I need to be back at work on Monday sadly
