And so, the end is near, but there is still time to squeeze in a few more medal opportunities before the Closing Ceremony hands things over to Rio. Finishing up today: the Men's Marathon, Men's Basketball, lots of Men's Boxing, Men's Cross-Country Mountain Biking, Group All-Around Rhythmic Gymnastics, Men's Handball, Women's Modern Pentathlon, Men's Volleyball, Men's Water Polo and Men's Wrestling. Seems like the men are dominating today but no matter. There's meant to be a smattering of Girl Power in the Closing Ceremony.

i am going to cheer for the independent guy

I'm going to Hyde Park for one of the closing ceremony concerts. Blur & The Specials will be the highlights for me.

Apparently, the stadium ceremony will be on the big screen

I also hope to find more Wenlocks & Mandevilles :)

What an absolute idiot interviewer on the beeb then. "Tell me about the sacrifices you made elaving your family at 17" after a marathon run, the guy looked like he was about to break down...

absolutely, he hadn't had chance to think about it and when he did, it overwhelmed him.

  • Mr C12/08/2012 at 12:18

put it another way, the only time in his whole career michael schumacher looked even vaguely human, was when he broke down in the press conference. the interviewer back then poked him with exactly the right 'tough' question at exactly the right time. that's the genius of making people cry :)

I just found another sychronised sport. Synchronised rythmic gymnastics. 5 girls with a ball each.

    The synchrons are taking over

  • john12/08/2012 at 12:45

geez dont the africans love a good long run, just looking they won all the long distace (1500m or more) gold medals, except the womens 1500 - turkey and the womens 3000m steeplechase - russia, but apart from that the rest were on by people from africa, including both marathons.

    * i know mo farah was representing gb, but he is an african too.

never understood why the africans are so good at long distance running but they have been for as long as i can remember and probably will be forever too.

never understood why the africans are so good at long distance running but they have been for as long as i can remember and probably will be forever too.

earlier in the coverage it was pointed out that rather than african nations being exceptionally good at running, it's more that many other events are too expensive to compete in. cycling, sailing and others have all extensively utilised wind tunnels and cfd this year. for some nations that's far too high a cost to even contemplate, so they simply don't enter.

in an ideal world, all nations would be able to afford to enter everything. i suspect we'd have far less gold medals if that were the case.

  • Steven Roy12/08/2012 at 13:04

It is about body type as well as the environmental conditions. People get very sensitive about anything to do with race but it is clear that east Africans particularly make great distance runners while west African/Caribbeans make great sprinters and white people make better swimmers.

There are events where money dictates opportunity and people from the richer countries have a huge if not total advantage. Anyone can sprint 100m but people from the same background keep winning. Ethiopians and Kenyans could just as easily be sprinters as distance runners but it just doesn't happen.

bbc showed a nice piece the other day that almost completely discounted that argument. plus, who came in second behind Mo last saturday?

ultimately, if you grow up aspiring to be like the people you see at the olympics and your nation has no history of success in cycling/rowing, and it can't afford any of those training facilities anyway, you're more likely to take up the sport your heroes have been successful in.

yeah thats it we are all geneticaly different, all built to do different things better, i noticed there are not too many african or black, (not trying to sound racist) cyclist but i would think that they would be good at sprinting and the veledrome would suit the power and speed that they naturally possess.

total nonsense. if china had access to the number of f1 wind tunnels and technology that we do, they would crush us at cycling.

I am not saying it is all genetics but there is no reason the Kenyans or Ethiopians could not sprint. I know they will aspire to distance running because that is the tradition but why don't the people who are not suited to distance running do sprinting?

  • Steven Roy12/08/2012 at 13:22

Has amateur boxing switched back to 3 minute rounds? Traditionally it was always 3 rounds of 3 minutes then they switched to 4 rounds of 2 minutes. This is the first boxing I have seen other than highlights and they are back to 3 minute rounds

  • ryan12/08/2012 at 13:26

Amateur boxing has been 3 for 3 since at least Athens not sure about before.

Currently stuck in hotel reception sans German eurosport, which is making me oddly missing it.

a quick googling says that they used to: http://kenyapage.net/commentary/?p=193

blame falls to lack of investment:

By the late 1990s to the early part of the new millennium, the neglect of Kenya athletics officials did untold damage to Kenya’s sprinting. They had decided that the sprints were not worth investing in. Kenya sprinting thus went into the dark ages for both men and women.

    success breeds success.

That was what I was wondering. What they are doing is incredible but surely they need to know one part to be in the right place and do the right thing all the time. It would be magic if they were all interchangeable.

I guess if she is an understudy it would be easier if everyone knew two parts so that everyone moved round one to fill the gap rather than one person knowing 5

This is very similar to cheerleading.

I bet they get tangled up something terrible the first hundred times they do a routine

  • Will^12/08/2012 at 14:05

Cheerleading has one big problem. the cheers. So take them away, and you essentially end up with this.

  • Steven Roy12/08/2012 at 14:05

they climb on each other a bit more and have pom poms. but it can easily be a competition.

  • Steven Roy12/08/2012 at 14:08

Each team does a ball routine and a hoop and ribbon one. So maybe the 6th one starts one routine and one of the other 5 miss the other. Maybe one is a specialist ribbonologist or something

  • Steven Roy12/08/2012 at 14:08

anything competitive can be, right? so all you need is a means to rank competitors and it's a sport.

we need to turn commenting into a sport.

  • Steven Roy12/08/2012 at 14:12

we need to turn commenting into a sport.

    Lets have some rules then

  • Will^12/08/2012 at 14:12

we need to turn commenting into a sport.

Depends if you're ready to code whatever scoring system that is devised, and have that running in a sidebar.

    Mysterons

  • Mr C12/08/2012 at 14:14

anything competitive can be, right? so all you need is a means to rank competitors and it's a sport.

The Michael Johnson book I just read suggests that anything competitive can be a sport, but he disputes whether to call people athletes or not. i.e. shooting with rifles = technical skill ahoy but not an athlete.

  • Will^12/08/2012 at 14:15

Ahh, the inbuild Mr C multiplier.

can't argue with that. look at darts players :)

Surely the scoring system is established on sidepodcast. If Christine says it gets points it get points. What we really need to know is what is the aim or goal of competitive commenting

Nice sidpodpluggage, but that's only coding the outcome, not the 'point-generating mechanism'.

  • Will^12/08/2012 at 14:20

If we were choosing criteria, clearly one should be accuracy of typing, which I am failing on this afternoon.

  • Steven Roy12/08/2012 at 14:21

yeah, this one is not for jumping.

There was one in the men's event yesterday that just wanted to do impressions of the Ferrari horse. Another one just looked at any wide fence and refuesd to jump. The rider eventually had to just miss out several fences and go to the next until he found one the horse liked

  • Mr C12/08/2012 at 14:23

wonder if it's the same one? exactly the same just happened.

  • Steven Roy12/08/2012 at 14:23

If we were choosing criteria, clearly one should be accuracy of typing, which I am failing on this afternoon.

I think points should also be awarded to anyone making a point or joke just before someone else makes exactly the same point. So often within a few seconds we get identical comments.

Normally I would suggest points for clever facts or specialist knowledge but that just isn't the sidepodcast way.

I think unless Mr C actually comes up with something we are left with no option but to revert to the sidepodpanel scoring system

  • Steven Roy12/08/2012 at 14:24

Olympic sidepodpanel. Christine gets to decide who gets gold medals. There may be a slight language problem to overcome. Christine would need to know the languages of all 204 countries

You would think the Olympic organisers would look for shared broadcast deals to guarantee the Paralympics a lot more coverage.

  • Will^12/08/2012 at 14:31

surprised the beeb didn't have to share these tbh.

imagine what they could do with the premiership. 24 channels of football. no need for monday, tuesday games. all start at 3pm saturday.

Ahh - reason they don't play Sat 3pm is to keep the gates numbers on all the lower league up.

imagine what they could do with the premiership. 24 channels of football. no need for monday, tuesday games. all start at 3pm saturday.

Never going to happen. They want games scattered around so that the people who go to one game watch all the others on TV

  • Mr C12/08/2012 at 14:35

true enough. although, they could... lower gate prices.

  • Steven Roy12/08/2012 at 14:37

true enough. although, they could... lower gate prices.

That has been tried and it surprisingly doesn't work. John Boyle who owned Motherwell reduced ticket prices to £5 for some games and it made no real difference to the crowd

Lower league teams are already struggling tbf. So the Prem would get all the TV money and also take money away from the lower clubs = unfair.

Apologies for the language in my last retweet. The statue in question is in the centre of Glasgow and for the last several years has permanently had a traffic cone on its head. No-one knows why or who does it. The authorities used to send men ith cherry pickers in to remove the cone but the next morning it would have been replaced. How anyone got up there without proper lifting equipment I have no idea. Or how they avoid CCTV.

I just love that on a Saturday night they clambered up to replace the standard traffic cone with a gold one.

I have just thought of another bonkers event we should live comment. Before the NBA (basketball) all star game they do a slam dunk challenge. It is weird but fascinating. I have only seen a bit of it once but if it is on at a reasonable time we should do it.

We have also done a few baseball and ice hockey games. Not sure we have done basketball yet but just a matter of tiem I suppose.

The strange thing is despite watching the NFL since it was first televised here in the 80s I don't support any particular team. There are some teams I like but not one that is my team. Recently the Colts have been about as close as I have had to a team but that was because Peyton Manning was running the offence rather than a coach doing it. Much more appealing to European eyes

phillip rivers is a pretty good quarter back, and tomlinson was a huge player for years before he moved on, the cowboys break my heart every year, so close, their best is good but always find strange ways of losing unlosable games.

the colts were one of those sides that were good to watch with the big offensive game they have, they probably deserved to have won more than one superbowl over mannings time there, he is a much better qb than his brother who now has two superbowl rings.

  • john12/08/2012 at 16:22

It is a very weird world where Eli won more Superbowls than Peyton.

luck has gone to the colts.

What an incredible piece of timing that was. manning gets injured and the Colts have the worst season possibe and end up with such a highly rated QB as a prize while Manning gets shown the door

Is that any stranger than the biathlon? Cross country ski several km with a rifle on your back. Stop and shoot real bullets at 5 targets then repeat several times.

No. Being serious. The problem with athletics and the like is you can't put them on there 25 times a year. You need to fill the stadium around that many times to make it pay. Athletics audiences will not pay what football fans pay.

I think there must be events they could put on there instead of handing it to a football club but no-one other than football clubs have made a bid as far as I know

Watch him with the kids before the start of his races. He is like Ali. He knows he is way better than anyone else and he says he is. It doesn't mean he is not down to Earth. As someone pointed out at teh 100metres sprinting like boxing is an ego sport. He is just getting inside the heads of the opposition

When does the Paralympics start? How popular is it? What are we thinking in terms of threads?

  • lou12/08/2012 at 19:49

oh yeah....derr!! I just keep assuming they are

i have done until today when i saw the channel 4 things they were tweeting. Would have made so much sense for there to be similar coverages but i suppose the bbc couldn't afford both.

  • Steven Roy12/08/2012 at 19:49

When does the Paralympics start? How popular is it? What are we thinking in terms of threads?

    29th

Definitely fo Zanardi and I would guess other events, May not need one a day

  • Tammoth12/08/2012 at 19:50

When does the Paralympics start? How popular is it? What are we thinking in terms of threads?

It starts on the 28th or 29th. Apparently they have sold more tickets this time than any other paralympics or something.

  • Christine12/08/2012 at 19:52

Definitely fo Zanardi and I would guess other events, May not need one a day

Okay, will see how it goes.

  • Christine12/08/2012 at 19:54

Mo is back. No baby yet then.

  • Steven Roy12/08/2012 at 19:55

It's weird realising that despite two solid weeks of Olympics I have no idea who most of the people in team GB are

  • Kai12/08/2012 at 19:55

  • Kai12/08/2012 at 20:00

All the music I've heard in every setting during the Games has been so good and well chosen. Bravo to the BBC for their coverage and the organizers for how well it all seemed to go.

Next thing you know, the first words heard after IOC President Rogge closes the games will be some of the athletes asking aloud for if anyone wants to do some pick-up games or races in the morning. :D

  • Amy12/08/2012 at 20:13

I want to be in the closing ceremony so I can just dance around

  • Steven Roy12/08/2012 at 20:13

there is nothing wrong with the way coldplay perform! wait till their DVD comes out and you'll see.

Reminds me- Chris Martin went and visited a 17 yr old boy in Boston Children's Hospital and wore the bracelet that night to lend support to his leukemia treatment, and dedicated "Fix You" to him. The boy is the older brother of a former student.

Great guy. The kid's been in the hospital for 5 months with 2 more to go. It helped to lift his spirits.

  • Rubbergoat12/08/2012 at 20:14

Danish coverage was also crap. Three channels, none really showing anything except studio time and interviews with Danes who finished 5th.

  • Amy12/08/2012 at 21:38

    he's pretty awesome.

any singer lucky to be involved with one direction instantly has a giant fan base which is good for them.

You can cancel that. McCartney definitely isn't playing

  • Lukeh12/08/2012 at 21:39

    he is the walrus, coocookachooo!

  • Lukeh12/08/2012 at 21:40

    love the crowd woooooooooos!

  • Mr C12/08/2012 at 21:40

    technically miming, but still briliant.

  • Steven Roy12/08/2012 at 21:40

Album cover of Pink Floyd album.

I don't remember that but it is a long long time since I saw one

  • Will^12/08/2012 at 21:40

    Brilliance all the same

  • lou12/08/2012 at 21:40

    the miming makes me sad.

  • lou12/08/2012 at 21:41

those lights make this whole show. stunning.

  • Lukeh12/08/2012 at 21:41

    the miming makes me sad.

yeah it kind of detaches it a bit. hopefully not everything is mimed!

  • Rubbergoat12/08/2012 at 21:41

Russell brand should have been willy wonks. Johnny depp just mimicked Michael Jackson.

  • Steven Roy12/08/2012 at 21:41

    the miming makes me sad.

    Unfortunately it is everywhere now.

  • Jordan F112/08/2012 at 21:41

You can cancel that. McCartney definitely isn't playing

    But Kate will be there!

  • Lukeh12/08/2012 at 21:41

    fatboy slim!

  • lou12/08/2012 at 21:41

    fat boy slim!!

  • Mr C12/08/2012 at 21:41

    the miming makes me sad.

you can't really manage so many mics live. you'd need about 40 desks. live aid took 10 mins between each act.

we need an olympic games in LA too.

  • lou12/08/2012 at 21:41

    *dances*

  • Lukeh12/08/2012 at 21:42

    there he is!

  • Steven Roy12/08/2012 at 21:42

you can't really manage so many mics live. you'd need about 40 desks. live aid took 10 mins between each act.

And there everyone was on one stage and not all over a football field

  • Christine12/08/2012 at 21:42

you can't really manage so many mics live. you'd need about 40 desks. live aid took 10 mins between each act.

The live audio we've heard has been v. quiet too.

  • Amy12/08/2012 at 21:42

    the miming makes me sad.

even the orchestras had to mime in the opening ceremony. theres really no way around it

  • Mr C12/08/2012 at 21:42

And there everyone was on one stage and not all over a football field

that too! yes. it's just not possible.

  • Kai12/08/2012 at 21:42

The live audio we've heard has been v. quiet too.

they should put it up to 11.

  • Steven Roy12/08/2012 at 21:42

we need an olympic games in LA too.

    Philadelphia

  • Christine12/08/2012 at 21:42

    Right here, right now!

  • Mr C12/08/2012 at 21:43

    Philadelphia

    #fail #fail #fail sorry :(

  • Lukeh12/08/2012 at 21:43

    ooooh tuuuune.

  • Amy12/08/2012 at 21:43

woohoo, looks like they should be done by the time i go to work.

  • Rubbergoat12/08/2012 at 21:43

you can't really manage so many mics live. you'd need about 40 desks. live aid took 10 mins between each act.

Also think of all the distortion.

  • lou12/08/2012 at 21:43

you can't really manage so many mics live. you'd need about 40 desks. live aid took 10 mins between each act.

it makes alot of sense, but it's just a sad consequence of it all i suppose. still loving it tho! plus makes me feel a bit better about not being there :)

  • Lukeh12/08/2012 at 21:43

although this song always reminds me of fifa 97 on the ps1. good times.

  • Mr C12/08/2012 at 21:44

Also think of all the distortion.

feedback in a 360 venue would be impossible to deal with. unless you delayed the audio and then it would look out of sync on telly.

  • Lukeh12/08/2012 at 21:44

so when's kenneth branaugh coming back with his chimneys? :)

  • Rubbergoat12/08/2012 at 21:44

If you saw Norman cook in the street you'd never know he was fatboy slim.

  • Christine12/08/2012 at 21:44

    Slo-mo athletes.

    who's that?

    Jessie J.

  • Rubbergoat12/08/2012 at 21:45

  • lou12/08/2012 at 21:47

I don't envy that man reversing through dancers!

  • Lukeh12/08/2012 at 22:44

so when is Ian fletcher coming up for a few words?

  • Steven Roy12/08/2012 at 22:44

Seb is not one of the great orators.

    Athletes did good

    Volunteers did good

    Fans did good.

Everything was good. Really good. Really awfully good.

This is the best opportunity he will ever have to inspire and he is BORING

  • Kai12/08/2012 at 22:44

so when is Ian fletcher coming up for a few words?

"right, so it's all good then. Good night."

  • Mr C12/08/2012 at 22:45

Seb is not one of the great orators.

    he's a runner, surely?

  • lou12/08/2012 at 22:45

:') so proud of what we've done. It could have been such a failure, but it wasn't, it was awesome, and I will never forget these past weeks.

  • Steven Roy12/08/2012 at 22:45

    he's a runner, surely?

He was also an MP then a Lord. You would have thought he would have gone to a couple of classes on making a speech

  • Lukeh12/08/2012 at 22:45

"right, so it's all good then. Good night."

to which graham comes up to the mic and goes 'yeah, thumbs up everyone!'

  • Christine12/08/2012 at 22:46

This is the best opportunity he will ever have to inspire and he is BORING

He's definitely not boring with capital letters. Not the most amazing speech ever, but I actually listened.

  • Steven Roy12/08/2012 at 22:46

Everyone keeps starting speeches with your Majesty. It looks like she was expected to be there

  • Kai12/08/2012 at 22:46

to which graham comes up to the mic and goes 'yeah, thumbs up everyone!'

But the point of this whole Olympics was legacy and future. That was the time to set out the vision and aim and tie it to the games we have just seen

  • Lukeh12/08/2012 at 22:49

    awwww it's going down.

Been fantastic. Can't thank everyone in the comments enough. My mother asked me today why I was so obsessed, if it was just because it was in London, but it wasn't that. It was the amount of coverage we had, and the fact we all got to discuss it together. It was perfect.

Don't forget, no sadness that it's over, just happiness that it happened, that we got to enjoy as much of it as possible and share it with each other, and that it was incredible.

I've just finished watching. Wow what a show. Lighting, production, everything. Love those lights in the stands. Some of the artists I didn't like but even those stepped it up. Others I hated in the 90s but I liked hearing again because it reminded me of the 90s. :) Didn't expect Liam Gallagher at all.. makes it odd that proud Londoners Blur were playing down the road instead of doing a song here. What a brilliant idea to put Freddie Mercury in it, and Eric Idle, and so many other things.
