geez dont the africans love a good long run, just looking they won all the long distace (1500m or more) gold medals, except the womens 1500 - turkey and the womens 3000m steeplechase - russia, but apart from that the rest were on by people from africa, including both marathons.

never understood why the africans are so good at long distance running but they have been for as long as i can remember and probably will be forever too.
Am visiting parents. So far, the gymnastics is the only thing my mother will give the time of day. The marathon was just people "wasting a good Sunday morning." :)

woah ive just had a look and they are pretty clever, i think these ladies would be alright on the basketball court, they would be good passers at least.
earlier in the coverage it was pointed out that rather than african nations being exceptionally good at running, it's more that many other events are too expensive to compete in. cycling, sailing and others have all extensively utilised wind tunnels and cfd this year. for some nations that's far too high a cost to even contemplate, so they simply don't enter.
in an ideal world, all nations would be able to afford to enter everything. i suspect we'd have far less gold medals if that were the case.
It is about body type as well as the environmental conditions. People get very sensitive about anything to do with race but it is clear that east Africans particularly make great distance runners while west African/Caribbeans make great sprinters and white people make better swimmers.
There are events where money dictates opportunity and people from the richer countries have a huge if not total advantage. Anyone can sprint 100m but people from the same background keep winning. Ethiopians and Kenyans could just as easily be sprinters as distance runners but it just doesn't happen.
bbc showed a nice piece the other day that almost completely discounted that argument. plus, who came in second behind Mo last saturday?
ultimately, if you grow up aspiring to be like the people you see at the olympics and your nation has no history of success in cycling/rowing, and it can't afford any of those training facilities anyway, you're more likely to take up the sport your heroes have been successful in.

total nonsense. if china had access to the number of f1 wind tunnels and technology that we do, they would crush us at cycling.
I am not saying it is all genetics but there is no reason the Kenyans or Ethiopians could not sprint. I know they will aspire to distance running because that is the tradition but why don't the people who are not suited to distance running do sprinting?

Has amateur boxing switched back to 3 minute rounds? Traditionally it was always 3 rounds of 3 minutes then they switched to 4 rounds of 2 minutes. This is the first boxing I have seen other than highlights and they are back to 3 minute rounds

There was one in the men's event yesterday that just wanted to do impressions of the Ferrari horse. Another one just looked at any wide fence and refuesd to jump. The rider eventually had to just miss out several fences and go to the next until he found one the horse liked

I think points should also be awarded to anyone making a point or joke just before someone else makes exactly the same point. So often within a few seconds we get identical comments.
Normally I would suggest points for clever facts or specialist knowledge but that just isn't the sidepodcast way.

Apologies for the language in my last retweet. The statue in question is in the centre of Glasgow and for the last several years has permanently had a traffic cone on its head. No-one knows why or who does it. The authorities used to send men ith cherry pickers in to remove the cone but the next morning it would have been replaced. How anyone got up there without proper lifting equipment I have no idea. Or how they avoid CCTV.
I just love that on a Saturday night they clambered up to replace the standard traffic cone with a gold one.

We tend to do a game every Sunday of the season. Normally the midnight-ish UK game but I am going to try to get us to do an earlier game this year as I need to be up earlier on Monday mornings now.
We have also done a few baseball and ice hockey games. Not sure we have done basketball yet but just a matter of tiem I suppose.

The strange thing is despite watching the NFL since it was first televised here in the 80s I don't support any particular team. There are some teams I like but not one that is my team. Recently the Colts have been about as close as I have had to a team but that was because Peyton Manning was running the offence rather than a coach doing it. Much more appealing to European eyes

phillip rivers is a pretty good quarter back, and tomlinson was a huge player for years before he moved on, the cowboys break my heart every year, so close, their best is good but always find strange ways of losing unlosable games.

any way thats it from me, after 2 amazing weeks of late nights and early mornings the olympics have come to a close for me, the closing ceremony is on tooearly here, as it is i start work in 5 hours so i needto get some sleep. loved every minute of the olympics this year, as every year really, wish it could go on for another 2 weeks but it has to come to an end. aussies did ok in the end not as much gold but still plenty of medals, top 8 i think. bring on rio 2016.

No. Being serious. The problem with athletics and the like is you can't put them on there 25 times a year. You need to fill the stadium around that many times to make it pay. Athletics audiences will not pay what football fans pay.
I think there must be events they could put on there instead of handing it to a football club but no-one other than football clubs have made a bid as far as I know

Been fantastic. Can't thank everyone in the comments enough. My mother asked me today why I was so obsessed, if it was just because it was in London, but it wasn't that. It was the amount of coverage we had, and the fact we all got to discuss it together. It was perfect.

I've just finished watching. Wow what a show. Lighting, production, everything. Love those lights in the stands. Some of the artists I didn't like but even those stepped it up. Others I hated in the 90s but I liked hearing again because it reminded me of the 90s. :) Didn't expect Liam Gallagher at all.. makes it odd that proud Londoners Blur were playing down the road instead of doing a song here. What a brilliant idea to put Freddie Mercury in it, and Eric Idle, and so many other things.
