The pole vault was incredibly captivating yesterday, so I'm intrigued to see whether the high jump can live up to it today. There are also a couple of track finals today too, so the athletics continues unabated. Medals are also available in the velodrome and off the diving board with the Men's 3m Springboard. The Team Dressage awards will be decided, whilst there are also Gymnastics Finals in Men's Parallel and Horizontal Bars, plus Women's Floor and Beam. There's more sailing, some synchronised swimming, the Men's Triathlon and some more epic weightlifting.
London 2012, Day 11

Twitter tells me that today is the last day of windsurfing competition and then it is being dropped from the Olympics! Poor sports being kicked out.
new Zealand is very sad because we've won lots of medals in it
Aww, that's not fair at all!
It is being replaced in Rio by Kitesurfing! (Not 100% sure what format the competition will be in, as kitesurfers themselves don't know yet) ;)
it may get reinstated for the 2016 olympics yet. it has been replaced by kite surfing which people are saying is too dangerous for the olympics. it may be too late but there is a chance kitesurfing wont be at the 2016 olympics.
I hope everyone has tried out the google doodle today, turns out i'm not good at hurdles in real life or on the computer.. strangely addicted tho!
best i can get is 15.4s and a silver. i want a golllddd!
15.3, I dunno where else there is to go - I know what I'm doing for the rest of the day.
The man driving the keirin bike is called Peter. He has three bikes called Faith, Hope and Charity and today is riding Hope
proper retro gaming! i trashed many a joystick back in the 80's doing this.
#showingmyage
ah yes the old joystick buster games, daley thompsons olympic challenge was one i remember. wiggle it until it boke.
that was the one! http://pics.mobygames.com/images/covers/large/1145913758-00.jpg
loaded from cassette: http://img.auctiva.com/imgdata/5/2/4/7/1/6/webimg/447818627_tp.jpg
(google's a bit faster)
oh that brings back some memories, i really liked the summer games one though, geez that was based on the 84 olympics........
Phillips Idowu has failed to make the final
funnily enough we have daley thompson commentating on the athletics now.
not long now until bolt hits the track again.
really, really showing my age :)
its bolt time
Triathlon's looking exciting
just a stroll to 20.39 for the 200m
Love it - the triathlon commentators likening our athlete's penalty to an F1 pitstop situation - being able to come in and get out and still be in the medals.
I bought a gold wenlock but sadly its smaller than Bolts one. Also a teapot I need to get home without smashing it. Now queuing for the HD 3D theatre to watch 25 minutes of something olympic. I don't really like3D but I do like olympics.
give the man a beer before he crosses the line
A.Brownlee nonchalantly wins that one!
Nick Dempsey's just sealed Silver in the medal race of the air-rowing, I mean windsurfing.
:)
Someone's just said that if the Brownlee family were a country, they'd be number 36 in the medal table :)
Opta Sports: 9 - Following Triathlon success, Team GB have now won gold in more different disciplines than the USA (8). Variety
Its weird watching horses dance
Note to American sports fans. There's more to sports in the US than the NFL. ;)
Meanwhile at Earls Court, Japan is giving their TV views some good late-night TV viewing in Women's Volleyball.
Fixed
Way to go, dude. :D
One of the Chinese players twisted her ankle is on the bench. That may make it tough for them as they're up 10-7 in Set 4 but trail 2 sets to 1.
Oneof the announcers said this is the biggest match for Japan in WOmen's VOlleyball since they last medaled back in 1984
Drama! @SonaliShah: Triathlon: the victory ceremony was delayed because Jonny collapsed. He was treated and the medals will be handed out shortly. Red button!
CHina came back to for force a fifth set and are trailing Japan 5-4 in a race to 15 points
Game 4 was a close one but China made the comeback.
Japan leads 8-6 as the teams switch sides
China ties it at 8.
CHina up 10-9 now.
ACKA spike from Japan hits the antenna and they have to call a time out trailing 11-9
Apologies for the typos. but I'm trying to type as the action is taking place.
2 quicks points for Japan and China takes a time out.
Both teams are out of time outs for the decider. Winner goes to the Medal ROund, loser goes to the placing round.
3 in a rwo for Japan! 12-11.
But a serce error ties it up again.
service*
13 all
Japan with match point now, 14 - 13.
Ma Yuwen ties it at 14
about to watch the womens semi final of the water polo, now thats a tough sport, geez id drown after about 5 minutes in the water, let alone trying to play the game.
Nopw it's Match Point for China
Now it's 15 All.
Advantage: China
JAPAN WINS!
They have 2 shots at getting their first medal since 1984. Their next opponet will be the winner of the Russia - Brasil match on Thursday in the second semi-final
gives ya a whole new respect for the factbyte factbox, doesn't it?
hehehe!!
Sure does. :)
Looking in at the USA - AUS Women's Water Polo Semifinal as I get ready for work.
Order in the COurt, Order in the COurt, the second semifinal of Women's Volleyball is now in session. ;)
not a bad game of water polo, down by 1 at half time,
At least regulation can be completed before I go to work.
And at the end of the 3rd
I'm wondering how they get the ball on the tether out to the middle of the pool. DO they bring the ring to one side of the pool to place the ball on first?
i have no idea!!!!
Sounds like a Gold in the Horse Dancing.
what a goal..... what a ridiculous call by the ump
thats better 8-8
Like you said.
CLose...
turnover, 43 seconds left need a goal
what going on!!!!
well its all happening
Uh oh, Contention Corner anyone?
yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees extra time
And I have to get going to work. I'll catch you all later. :)
bye
Hoy in the motorcycle-train slow-chase event.
The Italian gymnast Ferrari is currently 3rd in the indiv Floor final.
Down to 4th, and still 1 more to go. No luck for the very well named Italian.
So, what's the omnomnom all about?
6 events. Points for the place you finish in each event. Lowest scored wins.
Ooh, I like multi-event events.
250m flying start time trial; a 5 km scratch race; an elimination race; an individual pursuit; a 10 km points race; and a 500m time trial.
This is the last one, and our giurl is in with a great shout of the Gold.
Princes in the audience again. I don't think I've ever seen them spend so much time together.
I'd expect nothing less from a Brit on a bike ;)
I see we got our 20th gold in horsey stuff. 20! That's far too many,.
Laura Trott about to ride, & needs to finish 3 places ahead, or 2 and 0.269s in this ride.
GOLD for LT
So, Trott is like the complete opposite of those "names-that-are-their-jobs" thing that Mr C was so keen on.
nominative determinism
Ahh, I was so close!
too close to hauling them in for my liking #has3still
Vicky Pendleton's 1st ride in the slowslowslowfast cat-&-mouse chase starting now.
That was close!
yes this result will be reversed...... nicemust stay below the red line
anna mears 1 gb 0
Look slike Vicky P 1 aus 0
she went above the line,
There was a lean before that - she was unbalanced.
gone, phil liggitt (british) is saying it should be reversed, rules are rules
Mears had a definite lean into Vicky. (Chris Boardman is on GB's side)
She definitely went over the line, but I don't know the rules. It's not like they're biased, they kicked her out before.
here we go, race 2
I'm preparing my friendly banter ...
I'm disappearing :)
nice
yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees
gold, nice
sorry
No arguements there. That was a well rode race.
they should have re raced the first race, seems a big penalty in a best of three race off like this.
I think that would've been the fairest thing to do - 'giving' either of them the 1st race seems to almost decide the winner.
Safety Bike is back!
too good 6 golds
G G G GOLD
There'll be more tears then!
Another bronze! Yay!
I missed the motorbike chasing by ten minutes BOOOO
revoke your Scottishness
The medal ceremonies are weird. The longjumper bloke had to wait a day or two for his but Chris Hoy is getting his almost before he is off his bike
What? Why? Never!!
Ride-thought medal ceremonies - like.
Sponsored by McDonald's Drive In
On my way to my final event I have finally bought the official programme
if you missed Hoy you can't keep it
Chris Hoy's reaction says this is his last race ever.
Too many people driving too slowly and blocking the road. Trust me I was going plenty fast enough. Country roads need overtaking lanes or times when slow folk have to be off the road
Serious domination in the velodrome
@guardian_sport: 2008-12 Olympics track cycling medal table: 1) GB 14Gold 4Silver 3Bronze. 2) Australia 1G 2S 3B. 3) Germany 1G 2S 2B
Hello all!
I have just sat down to see we have won more at the cycling. I think everyone else should just give up :)
you missed Sir Chris!!
What a perfect first session of cycling for me to watch! yay for all our cyclists, I'm sad for Victoria tho.
Chris Hoy is doing no more Olympics but he will do the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2 years time.
I do have a question tho, how come they have spare medals? I've not heard of a joint medal before, but they seemed to have prepared for the situation should it happen, which was impressive!
We should just rename cycling to Chrishoying. It's much more appropriate, the man is an absolute beast on a bike¬
I wouldn't be surprised if he has actually evolved, and is now part-bike.
I'd also not be surprised if the Queen abdicates and gives the throne to the new King Chris.
Boo the diving judge I know isn't judging tonight
Water polo is weird with a capital W.
Ooh, Gary's back with the athletics line up. More running, more jumping, woo!
That's my kind of summary
Bit of throwing too, just for good measure.
I don't know how people run so fast and jump over stuff at the same time. Stoopid multitasking.
it's not easy, google has taught me that today.
Amazing run by Pearson.
I did 16.7 seconds. Rubbish. Although, Google, those hurdles are not equally spaced and that's all wrong!
hehe! it's horribly addictive though, i was pleased i had to leave the house the morning or i would have spent alot more time on it!
ohhh lou my dear, you've just made my evening disappear
I did well the first time, and then ran into three hurdles the second time. I know when I am beat. Beginner's luck and all that.
sorry!
it's time to get my ps1 track and field skills into practise :)
note: when i say skills...
i just couldn't get the gold, i always fell at the last hurdle!.. :D
Colin Jackson doing a little technical piece. I can't look at him without thinking about Tess in Casualty.
The Wells lady has purple hair.
12.1 seconds is my best. My tummy started grumbling upon finishing so it's clearly not happy me doing all these athletics, better make dinner instead ;)
Interesting hair streaks
I gave up in the low 13s before I destroy my keyboard
Like this piece with Coe where he took his medal. Looks a bit chilly now though!
determined to see a Mini at some point!
They're so cool. I need one.
Close finish in that 800m semi final!
I am finding the high jump just as captivating as the pole vault. Apparently I'm liking the jumping events.
Jumping up, and jumping across?
how about showjumping?
Jumping up is better than jumping across. Triple jump is silly.
I don't much like the horsey things but of them all, the jumping is the best.
And doesn't the diving & some gymnastics have elements of jumping?
Ooh, yes! Although I'm not a fan of trampolining. Maybe because it's fake jumping?
Nice run by that man - 800m quali, and he is very pleased.
With the running events where they close in I always think they're gonna clash feet.
There was some jostling in that first 800m heat. Sharp elbows!
His heels hit it! Aww.
It's so gutting when they clear it but their big fat feet get in the way!
Reckon they can get someone to push a vault out from under the mat as they run up? I won't tell
Impressive reaction to jump back up into the air from his back
I thought if your lack of seeing them when I tweeted one :D
so jealous. :'(
but at the same time amazed you got to see one :)
Bronze in the simple jumping-up
:)
Hehe, the USA guy shouting at the pole!
YOU GOT IN MY WAY, POLE!
Heikki happy: Great day in Olympics today - Finland got first medal, and great high jumping comp just going on. Also cycling was good today, Brits on form
finland didn't have a medal either? we gotta share them about some more.
#medalsforeveryone
Is he trying to earn #rankings points - mentioning the jumping and our cycling sucess.
He seemed quite happy... i think...?
hurdles?
#sneaky
Definitely hurdles. And the steeplechase one.
Once they should go
On your Marks
Set
DON'T GO YET
OK go now.
And see how many people go on the don't bit
i'd throw up a yellow light and see who's daft enough to switch off their engine ;)
rookies nobodies, I guess... :D
there needs to be a low jump event. I can do that.
or at least olympics limbo, like in futurama.
I think there should be a race in the pool with hurdles they have to swim under; Swurdles they should call it.
i like it!
Somebody's spotted the mini on TV tonight: http://t.co/kOhUohIY
How am I missing this constantly?!
Olympic Limbo would be good. But I also like the sound of Swurdles. Oh, if only we had the wiki still :)
Cannot.beat.12.1.seconds.
new olympic record in the hurdles! wow that was close.
That was mega-close! New Olympic record by Pearson and it's raining and everything!
Yes she's happy.
That was a scream!
heard that from the other room.
Now they're all at it!
even I'm screaming!
Aww I liked the american lady's 'Yaaaay!'
@BBCSport: Gold for Australia and for Sally Pearson in the women's 100m hurdles! She waits for confirmation & when it comes it's an utter scream-a-thon
1500m agogo.
NZs total forever medal tally is now 99. Oooh who will be 100! Have they run the 1500m yet? #gonick
Lots of elbowing going on.
He's on it now.
ooh there's my answer
The 800m walking away guy is so far ahead!
Oooh, is that the same guy?
NZ not so good there, sorry Amy.
That probably means I should stop lurking in Westfield and go to the station before the 80k from the stadium arrive
boo, he got silver in Beijing
Yep!
He's going a bit faster this time though.
Doesn't look all that injured.
a football team should probably sign him up
Given the way Amy wins paddock tours I think she should buy a Euromillions ticket for Friday. No-one won the jackpot again tonight so £160 million on Friday night.
I bought one for the draw on the 27th and it was a bust. Couldn't even win the £2.80 my dad won when he was here
Ima have to duck out of the sport now, but here's tomorrows schedule: http://www.london2012.com/schedule-and-results/day=8-august/all-day.html
Looking forward to the athletics, as always, seeing what the BMXing is all about, and diving on at evening o'clock!
tom is diving the whole of friday evening, should we call off another FuF and plan to do loads in the coming months instead?
Two the next week to make up for it :)
#peskysport
Beach volleyball in the pouring rain just doesn't look right
i don't want it to ennndddd
no, me neither really.
two weeks of no fuf'ing shows though ;)
It's not like there are loads of things that have happened to talk about.
you'd think seb coe wouldve thought about this clash!
true enough. nothing has happened at all.
Now that would be a challenge - trying to talk for an hour with no notes, and nothing much having gone on.
last time we went an hour without anything to really talk about we almost created a religion.
a hoy hoy!
his gold medals make the most victorious clink.
And despite the Opening Ceremony drawing very close
I hate this headline from the beeb: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/olympics/18903420
"Victoria Pendleton loses to Anna Meares in her last ever race"
she got a silver!! i know she lost the one on one battle but still, how negative.
I wish the 24 BBC channels replayed stuff over night rather than just showing tomorrows schedule. There's so much I've missed!
It was so sad flicking through them at 9:40pm to find most of them closed down already. A few days ago half of them were going to midnight
Not coming first is losing, just not as much as coming last. It's still a fantastic achievement for a superb sportswoman.
I'm more irritated by the interviews asking folk "you must be gutted", etc
that's the best bit!
better than "awww, you tried your very bestest didn't you? here have a lollipop"
I'm not saying wrap them up and hug them, just maybe not do it 30s after they fail to qualify, make the podium or break 12 olympic records
we want emotion, that's the key to emotion. better than lee turning her head to one side and suggesting said person might be gutted.
I think there's a better approach to the questions but I take your point
the only solution really, is to interview them 15/30/45 minutes after a race. grab someone out of the pool after they nearly died failing to achieve what they set out too, and no question is going to come across well.
love that the tri-guy could pick up a flag before the finish line.
the fia would have a fit.
One of the high jumpers lost his vest part way through the competition. He missed one jump because he was timed out while he was searching for the vest. An official told him just to put on a tee shirt fro the next one. He attached a spare number with one pin and still cleared the bar. Eventually the vest (or a replacement) turned up and he used it for the rest of the competition.
