Another exciting day on track yesterday leads us nicely into the second week of Olympic sports. Coming up today Beth Tweddle hopes for an uneven bars medal, there are more medals up for grabs in the velodrome plus the great track action continues. Also today: Team show jumping final, Sailing and Shooting finals, Weightlifting and Greco-Roman wrestling. The synchronised swimming also continues, if that's your thing.
London 2012, Day 10

yes sally pearson 12.58 not a bad run in the first heat of the 100m hurdles.
Aussie paper claims Kiwi golds under 'Aus Zealand'! http://t.co/DIxEu1JV
looks like the Murray's are pretty proud of the medals :) - https://twitter.com/maggiemay_hem/status/232448457649037312/photo/1
cutteee!
it was a 'tounge in cheek' joke at how little gold we have won so far, dont think its serious for a second, we can laugh at our own expense as good as anyone.
that will change tonight, we will be ahead of them very soon.
look out wiggins, just saw this tweet from alonso
'Hello! Finished the 19km time trial.., with 26min 04sec, average 44.8km/h, First !!!'
alonso for gold rio 2016
Try saying it AusZea-Land, it seems even more tongue in cheek.
tom slingsby sailing for gold now..... go the aussie.
He's doing a great job of sailing the CYP down the fleet - Ben Ainslie style.
yeah the bloke from cyprus needs to finish in the top three for any chance to win.
4th or lower and no chance, but is being held down in 10th - brilliant display of match-racing strategies.
yeah he knowswhat he is doing, dont really know much about sailing but lookig him up he has a pretty impressive record, 5 time world laser champion, plus being a world champion in 2 other classes, so i guess its no real surprise that he is doing ok.
thats the thing about the olympics, you get to see so many other sports that you dont get to see any other time, so many different sports are good to watch and you get into them but its the last time we will see it until 2016. never get to see sailing or archery etc.
If you forget somewhat about the actual boat-control aspects, and to some extents the detail of the rules, it just turns into a race :) and we can all get behind one of those.
The Aussie sailor there shows, as they say, how it's done
gooooooooooooooooold
hooray finally some gold for the aussies.
BETH TWEDDLE ON NOW !!
Ohhh, big step back :S
Beth in S atm. 2 more to go.
Beth down to B.
ill never understand how they judge gymnastics
I think they have a metric of deductions from a perfect 10 for execution, then that is added to the difficulty score for the whole routine.
Apparently that should've been 3 to go.
Beth in B, with last one going now.
yeah, but they all look so similar to me
Final gymnast not having a brill time.
its all over for her, she cant win a medal
I think if you make little technical error, then the experienced judges can easily (?) spot them.
the commentator realised she was facing the wrong way
Surely now 1 RUS 2 CHI 3 Beth
She had to throw a huge dismount to be up there in this tough field - so really unfortunate on the stumble, could've been even higher. But she has deserved an Olympic medal, and now finally has one :)
Yay for Beth! Shame it's not more after that earlier performance on bars for the team, but a medal at last! Fabbo!
Men's Slow-Slow-Slow-V.Fast Cycling Semis, with some GB interest
And now some Women's Omnomnomnium
nice another elimination race, not sure if ill be able to make it though its getting late here. might have to record it.
Looks like they are doing the flying lap atm
I like watching the points-race #chaos
yeah and there is a 20 km points race before the elimination race
Pendleton looked impressive in the quarter final of... Sprint Race, I think
love the detail in this image - http://www.sphericalimages.com/getty/london-2012/gigapixel-henry-stuart-100m-final/tour.html
Mini Minis!
cute!
Gold for Jason Kenny!
Yey for another great performance by TeamGB.
also interesting: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2012/08/05/sports/olympics/the-100-meter-dash-one-race-every-medalist-ever.html
and: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2012/08/04/sports/olympics/bob-beamons-long-olympic-shadow.html
This cycling elimination race has a nice format :) F1 Qualifying anybody? ;)
watching football atm, can ya describe it?
Pretty exciting stuff
Starts off with a large bunch of 15-20 and every lap [or 2] the tail ender is eliminatede until there are only 2
ah-ha. like dancing :)
Is much better than it sounds. Laura Trott seemed to be at the back and near elimination several times when in fact, she was just holding it in reserve
And in the end, Laura Trott wins it :)
The sprint won is fascinating. Faster and faster it goes, where it stops...
Just watched the Japan women go through to the football final.
enjoyed that. now for some hockey.
Kate Walsh is playing, despite the whole haw situation. They said she would and I didn't believe it!
*jaw
Evening all :)
Hello!
I have ditched the hockey for Gary and the athletics :)
Looks like more medals for us today, woo!
Hopefully more tonight too.
KRIS AKUBUSI!
AWOOGA
noooo that was john fashanu. we had this discussion :)
maybe he read our comments to clarify this
We did have this discussion ;) and they both did it.
Well, I don't know how Akabusi does it, but Fashanu does it better.
If you wait, Gary might get him to do one :)
Gary is hoping she starts answering before he has to finish asking the question.
Yay for Beth!
Can't believe she's not doing more olympics
She is already very old for a F gymnast.
Ohhh I thought she was like, 20, 21. Wikipedia proves me otherwise :)
@BBCSport_Ollie: Every other gymnast in Beth Tweddle's Olympic final was born in the 1990s. She was born in 1985.
27, which makes her 31 in Rio.
(The final gymnast on the bars earlier was 16.)
Ohhh I thought she had that on the pole vault.
Me 2 - only 1 more shot at that height, or move on and gamble :S
what is that dude doing? he just jogged off the race!
Didn't follow that news at all
That USA top looks really uncomfortable. Long sleeves and high neck.
She got it!! :)
Goooo Holly!
Yey :)
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/olympics/athletics/9456916/Algerian-runner-banned-for-not-trying-hard-enough.html Original story - looks like he's now been reinstated.
The USA lady made that look easy.
Wouldn't it have made more sense for him to do a false start? Then he wouldn't have had to run at all!
Officious officials would probably have realised it was deliberate.
I guess. Can't get any worse than being thrown out though, can it? :)
Oo err Holly
She doesn't look confident, quite agitated, but I don't know if that's just how she is.
I watched her in a couple of things earlier this year and she does seem a nervous jumper, but never this bad. Fingers crossed.
Aww, poor Holly. They're saying she's definitely one to watch in future though.
She is gutted - watching the pol-vault channel, now going over to the crowd :'( hugs all round
Dai Greene
Fourth. He says he was a bit tired tonight.
A new best Olympian name:
@alanbaldwinf1: Bart Bonk has won weightlifting bronze for Poland tonight. Just thought I'd share that with you.
Hi. shame about Greene but did well if he missed lots of training as they say.
I am at dad's, he didn't want to watch as no 'English' people were in contention.. I won the battle eventually. He's asleep now.
The pole-vault is captivating, even if it is terrifying!
Don't know what was up with Bleasdale. on 5live on the way over they said loads failed to clear the first bar at the first go, maybe something with the wind?
Mr C has that kind of strategy every day :)
Heheh!
they have shortcuts in the olympics too? bernie would love this.
It even has added water!
Soaking the photographers
@HollyBleasdale: Devastated! Thanks for the support from everyone and sorry for letting people down! Tried my best just wasn't to be!
Awww, she did look pretty upset too.
Felix Sanchez, the guy who won the medal that Greene didn't, is absolutely crying buckets on the podium.
They haven't even started playing the anthem yet!
f1's plan to use digital flags makes a lot of sense...
no wind no flags, too much wind no flags.
awwwwwwwwww
I mean, he is properly having a full on breakdown up there.
so damn cute!! I love seeing happy people :)
That's happy!
well i'm guessing so! happy tears! :)
that was every emotion going i think.
i'm supporting grenada. never won any medal ever. ever!!
Hi all
Great to see it means something :)
now this race has twins!
plus it has an f1 connection! :)
Oooh, I like!
Does anyone know why we're on lanes 2-9 and not 1-8?
lanes 2 and 9, symmetry
is lane 1 still wet?
Bookends rather
yeah, steeplechase ruined it, i guess.
The bend will be less tight although they ran the same lanes in the 100 metres. I have no idea why there are 9 lanes
Lewis Hamilton will be happy
I thought Lane 9 was for Olympic traffic
done this all weekend.
The twins crossed the line together, should've expected that !
big gap..
they got a medal! stunning.
he's had a ton of injuries and couldn't compete for a time.
:)
women's 400 hurdles used all 9
*dies*
I suppose.using twins proves the stagger is right
interesting.
0.02 apart :)
He seems very grounded :) nice.
One of the pole vaulters is called Silva and I must admit that is confusing me greatly when discussing the medal possibilities :)
Those last few attempts have all seemed particularly dangerous!
Loved the commentator saying Silva going for gold
headline writers would love if she won gold
even my phone has caught the olympic bug! it automatically corrects 'wednesday' to 'wenlock' strannnggeee!
Rightly so!
Tomorrow's schedule: http://www.london2012.com/schedule-and-results/day=7-august/all-day.html
More athletics, diving should be good, and keen to catch up with the Men's Triathlon although it's at a rather less accessible time than the women's.
I'm going to the triathlon with my sister, it is a more accessible time for getting the train from here in the morning :)
Loose end after that so we're going for a wander to soak up atmosphere. maybe look at team HQs if we can find them in the city, or the free Hyde Park event. must also hunt a Team GB or London 2012 tshirt
Oooh, fantastic! Hope the weather holds out.
ohh, have an awesome time!
Let us know where you're standing.
I hope you enjoy it and the weather holds out for you.
Thanks will do, hoping rains holds but may have to bring anorak..
Aiming to be near Serpentine. will tweet location as my old phone's browser struggles to comment (it can do it but the Gravity app is easier)
I'm amazed Amy was in stadium for 100m last night, didn't realise
not until well obviously did last night, but not beforehand that that was the night :)
Oops iPad commenting fail
Drama in the women's football semi: 3-3 in extra time, and USA score at 120 +1:30 (after coming from behind)
Have that on mute. It was all getting very violent in the second half of extra time!
I think once the Olympics is over to help us get over the gap we should all pick events we liked or would have liked to have seen. Then we find an individual cycling, fencing, sailing or whatever event and follow that.
Interesting!
more tennis for me then ;).. ohh you mean different sports.... ;)
good plan, wonder what is coming up
Yes. Because we have all seen little bits of sports we have found interesting but the nature of the Olympics is that you are always chopping and changing between sports so you can't get a lot of time on some of the minority sports
good plan!
That reminds me tho, i need to give cycling a better chance tomorrow, i've somewhat neglected it until today, and when i tuned in i got so confused. A guy chasing down another... veerrryyyy slowly... and then a bell goes and they go super quick and race! I don't understand why this happens or what it's for but it looks funny :)
I think because the blast at the end uses so much energy, if they go too soon they'll get tired and the one behind will breeze by.. So they play cat and mouse, who goes first and can I catch them
It's the same as old fashioned motor racing. No-one wants to lead because they tow the following rider which means he uses less effort and can slipstream past to win. So they both go slow to force the other guy to lead and eventually one of them decides he can go first and try to break the tow before the other one reacts.
I have seen sprint races where the two riders effectively stop on the banking. The rules mean the have to keep moving forwards all the time but they do it so slowly they look like they are stopped
No more use for track stands. (NIght night all)
ohhh that makes a bit more sense, it just strikes me as the strangest sport ever!
Stranger than cyclists following the little motor bike round?
Stranger than people spending millions on cars to drive as fast as possible back to where they started?
it is a quirky sport
what's that? (if it's obvious.. i'm tired... sorry!)
that's not crazy!!
The Keirin. They follow a little motorbike that gradually gets faster and faster for about ten laps then it pulls off and they race for about 20 seconds or something
amazing!! i missed that then!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keirin
That was the race Victoria Pendleton won. She was about 5th with half a lap to go then passed all of them
i blame Andy Murray then. stupid tennis being in the olympics. i'll have to make that my sport i follow after the olympics then!
This clip only shows a little bit of the boring motor bike part. Incredibly uninformed American commentator who only knows the name of his own rider. A rider from Great Britain wins. Unbelievable
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rq-PJzo4rU
that looks so fun!!!
I went out drinking and missed lots of sports.
Woop silver.
also the strange cat and mouse cycling is being repeated on bb1 .. i kinda get it now. the crazy bit makes me giggle.
can tell you've been staying with bassano! ;) pleased to hear you gave yourself some time to relax in london too!
Bassano is such a bad influence on you.
went to the only cider bar in London with Kate who is back from Liverpool for a few days. Drinking my sorrow at tomorrow being my last day at the olympics!
tomorrow is your last day!!! nooo! do you fly back on wednesday then?
Your last day already? It hardly seems any time since you arrived
Thursday night. Flying back sucks because every time I land in Melbourne I realise how completely over living there I am and it really depresses me. I really want to go home. Planning a big day of shopping on Wednesday. I wonder if the Mini shop has mini Minis
ahhh shopping day sounds amazing, i need one of those, but have no money to do it with. How you still have money for shopping i will never know! :) you have to get a mini mini!
is living in Melb a permanent thing then? do you not have an option to move back? If you're not happy somewhere try and do something? You've proven with your amazing Europe trips you can save money and things? :)
i'm sad you're leaving the country again so soon Amy! It feels wrong to have only met up with you twice when you're so close!
Theres a man on the Telly who won the 400m hurdles and he's bawling and I love him
he's the bestest!
i think he's still crying now.
He won gold in 2004 and seems to have been injured ever since. I don't think he thought he would ever get back to that level again. When he did it was just too much for him to take.
thanks to the lovely bassano owning a fridge I've saved a lot of money on eating out!
definitely not, I've always said I'd be back in nz by 30. I feel like I need to stay longer and get a better job to go on my cv before I can go back to nz, and the thought of moving back to nz and having to go through that whole making friends as an adult thing sucks because it's so hard :( and I know as soon as I leaveill miss the AO and the GP and al that being on my doorstep but it's hard to justify staying simpy because it rocks for 3 weeks a year
Don't most people in 1st world countries own fridges? :)
hotel's have a habit of filling them up the mini-bar.
...actually, i'm surprised bassano's missed that trick :)
i can imagine that would save alot! plenty of savings to buy yourself a mini mini and a mclaren jumper ;)
Ah i see! I can imagine it wouldn't be easy, but at least you envisage yourself moving back at one point, which is something to work towards, but i'm guessing isnt much comfort in times when you just want to go back then. As long as you feel at home somewhere i'm sure making friends etc will be something that maybe happens easier? Who knows there may be a lot of sidepodcast fans in nz?? I can imagine moving away from the AO and GP would be difficult, but one day you may get sick of going every year anyway (i can't imagine that would be soon.. but you never know!) :)
he's too busy sleeping on the stairs ;)
I'm tempted to sleep in the couch. It's just so comfy and I'm still drunk
hehe totally understandable!
you could move to sydney, you have adult friends there already and the events are (semi) commutable.
but Sydney sucks and it's not home
they have cider ;)
so. Does London!
I highly recommend the cider tap.
when all this is over, i think i'm gonna be lost without gabby explaining important events of the day to be every evening.
do they have wifi? new unofficial meetup spot.
Mrs C does F1 minute.. it's like the more time efficient and F1 version of what gabby is doing ;) We need some sort of medal board tho :)
we do!!
I didn't check because the 3G worked :)
Possibly not big enough for a meetup, it's tiny and cute.
And the bathroom is up a spiral staircase which is cruel after a few drinks. I'm still dizzy.
massive smash into the pool. #divingfail
and spandau ballet
:) :)
'this is the most number of news stories in a day from F1 since.. (insert date)'
altho.. i just realised what i said... Bernie we don't want medals!!!
if f1 had medals, lewis might be allowed to keep one...
That's okay, if we get there early enough it can be the unofficial sidepodbar! ;)
across the road is the Easton tap which is identical but does beer instead of cider. Twin pubs!
hehehe!
amazing!! I'm shocked Bassano hasn't made us all go there already!
he didntknow there was a cider only pub in euston. I'm such a local.
you're fitting in so well! Sure you wanna leave ;)
lewis is happy!
In Grenada, big day here for Grenadian's...we gonna party hard!!! Kirani James mashed it up! The country is going crazy, so proud & happy for them. Both teamGB & teamGrenada have made done us proud. Didn't get to go see the Olympics but grateful I get to celebrate it here! Will take pics
