Germany v England 3pm

England meet their age old foes in the second round of the 2010 World Cup after both having some dodgy games in the group stages. England remain unbeaten so far in the competition, whereas Germany lost to group losers Serbia in the opening matches. Germany finished top of their group with 6 points but England struggled into second spot after a 0-1 win over Slovenia on Wednesday.

England team news is that Rooney has lost form and is carrying an ankle knock from Wednesday's game, although he has been declared fit and should start today. Ledley King is back from his groin injury, but Upson may remain in the team after a solid performance against Slovenia. In the German team, striker Cacau will miss the game with an abdominal muscle strain.

England haven't beaten Germany in a World Cup game since 1966, can they do it today? Out of all our internationals with Germany we have won 12 to their 10, but when it comes down penalties the Germans remain supreme. If it comes down to the wire can England make up for the shoot-out defeats of 1990 and Euro 1996?

Argentina v Mexico 7.30pm

Another of England's rivals, Argentina, face Mexico in this second round match. They last met 4 years ago in the second round of the 2006 World Cup where Argentina secured their quarter-final place with a 2-1 win over Mexico. There are no fewer than 14 of the players from that match in 2006 playing for the teams today, so it may become a bit of a grudge match with Mexico hoping to redeem themselves.

Argentina finished top of their group having swept the board with a maximum 9 points. Mexico struggled and only gained second place. They won against France and contributed to their departure from the 2010 World Cup, but their other matches were mixed, being defeated by group winners Uruguay and drawing against the host nation South Africa.

Can Mexico make up for 4 years ago? Or will Argentina maintain their winning streak and earn a place in the quarter finals?

Quarter-finals

Whoever goes through today will meet in the quarter-finals next Saturday. If both England and Argentina get through it will be another tense match with lots of footballing history between the two teams. But England still have to overcome Germany before we face that possibility and nothing is ever certain against the Germans...

All that remains to be said is "Come On England!"

    National anthems about to begin...

  • Marilene Riddle27/06/2010 at 13:55

That was terribly rude of the English fans. Not that I am expecting much. :(

  • Marilene Riddle27/06/2010 at 13:56

    eh?

Booos at the mention of Germany's national anthem. Then whistling when the tune 1st starts. :(

  • Marilene Riddle27/06/2010 at 13:57

LOL. And the English fans aren't on time with their own anthem.

  • RG27/06/2010 at 13:57

LOL. And the English fans aren't on time with their own anthem.

Its not about timing, its about pride and passion.

And Sepp Blatter is there... boo.

  • RG27/06/2010 at 13:57

Oooh I see the very German Cacau is not in the team.

  • Marilene Riddle27/06/2010 at 13:59

Oooh I see the very German Cacau is not in the team.

Yay for no Jamie on the England team. I needn't feel bad when the goals flow pass the English defense then. :D

Oi. Same yay for no Jamie, different reason though ;)

Isn't that the norm? Till the Calamity half creeps up of course. ;)

  • RubberGoat27/06/2010 at 14:05

I don't have an England shirt, so I'm wearing my Forest shirt because it's red...

Not from Ashley Cole. Despite him being a really hateable person, he is a very good left back.

  • Marilene Riddle27/06/2010 at 14:06

I have a Spurs shirt on. Last time I wore it Defoe scored against Slovenia so am hoping for the same this time

Can't compare to the best full back in the world who is sharing the pitch right now. gooooo Philipp!

On any other day, I'd agree with you. But not right now.

  • RubberGoat27/06/2010 at 14:09

I'm drinking a Belgian beer called a Jupiler (which my mate brought round the other day).

...But the can is red and has a Bull on it ;)

Can imagine if Klose scores the winner in the 90th minute:

    "Klose, but no cigar"

  • Marilene Riddle27/06/2010 at 14:20

English defense leaks as usual! Let's trounce them now!

  • Pat W27/06/2010 at 14:20

    nooo

  • RubberGoat27/06/2010 at 14:20

You just have to be joking. Typical!

  • RG27/06/2010 at 14:21

Bring Ledley King on, he wouldn't have let that happen.

  • Christine27/06/2010 at 14:21

Germany just dance around England. They make us look stoooopid.

  • Marilene Riddle27/06/2010 at 14:22

Bring Ledley King on, he wouldn't have let that happen.

Don't bring Jamie on, I want him to be spared from the English press' massacre. ;)

  • RubberGoat27/06/2010 at 14:23

Germany just dance around England. They make us look stoooopid.

The funniest part was that three times before, the commentator kept slating Klose as having a rubbish World Cup and domestic season!

  • Marilene Riddle27/06/2010 at 14:23

Germany just dance around England. They make us look stoooopid.

    Poetry in motion. :D

  • RG27/06/2010 at 14:23

Pass the ball Rooney, don't just shoot with that ball.

  • RG27/06/2010 at 14:25

    Well, on target I suppose.

  • RG27/06/2010 at 14:25

Upson can't cope with Klose, simple as.

  • Marilene Riddle27/06/2010 at 14:26

Pass the ball Rooney, don't just shoot with that ball.

    Well, on target I suppose.

You don't want your striker to shoot, but expect your midfielders to score?

  • RG27/06/2010 at 14:27

You don't want your striker to shoot, but expect your midfielders to score?

Its too far out, I don't expect any one to score from there really, we need to pass the ball and get in the box, how to score.

  • Pat W27/06/2010 at 14:27

At least England seem to be playing better than they did in the group stages. Not enough though, yet.

  • Steven Roy27/06/2010 at 14:27

    Great tackle by the ref

  • Marilene Riddle27/06/2010 at 14:28

    Great tackle by the ref

    :D

  • RG27/06/2010 at 14:28

    England with 58% possesion.

And we can't do anything with it. Heard somewhere yesterday that Uruguay had won all of their game with less than 45% of the possesion...

  • Marilene Riddle27/06/2010 at 14:28

Germany has slightly less possession. Hopefully that will change soon.

  • Steven Roy27/06/2010 at 14:29

And we can't do anything with it. Heard somewhere yesterday that Uruguay had won all of their game with less than 45% of the possesion...

Possession is only useful after you have a lead. Otherwise it is meaningless

  • Steven Roy27/06/2010 at 14:30

    Should have been 2-0

  • RG27/06/2010 at 14:30

    Thank god for David James.

  • Marilene Riddle27/06/2010 at 14:30

    WHAT!!! Klose! :(

  • RG27/06/2010 at 14:32

Where the hell is the defence? 2-0, rubbish.

  • Marilene Riddle27/06/2010 at 14:32

    LUKAS!!!!! GERMANY 2-0!!!!

  • Pat W27/06/2010 at 14:32

    This is not going well!

  • Steven Roy27/06/2010 at 14:32

    2-0 now

  • RubberGoat27/06/2010 at 14:32

  • Marilene Riddle27/06/2010 at 14:33

    2-0 now

I can just imagine Basti Vettel enjoying this match with his champagne... :D

  • RG27/06/2010 at 14:33

sorry to say this, but england is being trashed. seriously :-(

The defence look like they've met up 5 minutes before the match. Its like watching my own team defend, in fact they could probably be doing better right now.

  • Marilene Riddle27/06/2010 at 14:35

CAPTAIN PHILIPP! Thank goodness he is probably the best defender on the field now.

  • fourstar27/06/2010 at 14:35

Taken to pieces, as expected. We're not remotely as good as the players, the fans or the media make us out to be. The sooner we accept that, the better.

  • RG27/06/2010 at 14:35

I bet you'll shout your own team into shape though. ;)

I've seen us concede 4 goals in 20 minutes and still draw 5-5, its all going to be fine.

I do agree but I had a sense of optimism they'd step up for such a big game. Seems as if I was wrong.

Before the tournament this was the golden generation of English players and the FA extended the manager's contract so he would not be poached after they won the world cup

  • Marilene Riddle27/06/2010 at 14:37

    GOODNESS! STEVIE G SCORES!

  • RG27/06/2010 at 14:37

It was a goal! You are kidding me ref. You have to be kidding me.

  • Steven Roy27/06/2010 at 14:38

    No Russian linesman this time.

  • Marilene Riddle27/06/2010 at 14:38

    Not given. Sorry.

  • Christine27/06/2010 at 14:38

    CONTROVERSY!

  • RG27/06/2010 at 14:39

    How come?

Mr Blatter doesn't like his technology

  • Marilene Riddle27/06/2010 at 14:39

    How come?

    Referee says no, so no.

  • Steven Roy27/06/2010 at 14:40

    How come?

THe referee and linesman didn't think it was in and FIFA refuse to use technology

  • Christine27/06/2010 at 14:40

    Referee says no, so no.

I get that, but what is the reason?

    COME ON GERMANY! TEIMGEIST MANNSCHAFT!!!!

  • Christine27/06/2010 at 14:40

They didn't see it go in.

Not one single person saw it? That's crazy!

  • fourstar27/06/2010 at 14:42

Awful decision. Sell Blatter must be squirming. He won't be, because he is a fat self serving committee bribing blowhard, but he ought to be.

Sorry if that's out of order, but I'm livid.

  • Marilene Riddle27/06/2010 at 14:42

Not one single person saw it? That's crazy!

Many saw, but not the 2 that mattered.

  • Steven Roy27/06/2010 at 14:42

    In the actual goal?

It was a goal but FIFA won't use technology so it is down to the position of two men and what they see. The ref can easily have a player in front of him or not have a good angle and the same with the linesman

  • Christine27/06/2010 at 14:42

Isn't that like Charlie saying, oh wait, I didn't see Vettel cross the line so he didn't win? I don't get it.

  • RubberGoat27/06/2010 at 14:42

THe referee and linesman didn't think it was in and FIFA refuse to use technology

    In the actual goal?

    Exactly.

They harp on about a useless high-tech beach ball with aerodynamic bits on it and they REFUSE to use any kind of video or sensor technology to ensure that line decisions are fair.

It's just another decision of a long line of VERY dodgy calls. Seemingly the referees and linesman are in fact blind, or at least dodgy.

  • RG27/06/2010 at 14:42

Sorry if that's out of order, but I'm livid.

    Agree 5000000%.

Like Pedro Mendes v Man U all over again

Only straight red cards can be appealed.

  • Amy27/06/2010 at 14:44

    even an American is watching:

@andyroddick: i mean everyone on the planet can see that ball was 2 feet past the line... how do they not have someone that can call it good after replay?

  • RG27/06/2010 at 14:44

Still though, don't fancy half time, we're playing well.

  • Marilene Riddle27/06/2010 at 14:44

No. That is why Maradona's handball stands till this day.

  • Steven Roy27/06/2010 at 14:44

It is like Brazil a few years ago when Pele was due to flag the winner and he missed the winning driver crossing the line. It didn't change the result but had it been football rules the second guy would have won just like me and Mr C karting

  • lou27/06/2010 at 14:46

    heehehe

    @VirginRacing

In the motorhome it's Germans upstairs and English downstairs. Highly entertaining with the obvious Wembley comparisons!

No, the referee's decision is final, that is set in stone in the Laws Of The Game.

    Shocking.

will the scoreboard die in a minute?

  • fourstar27/06/2010 at 14:47

I think these decisions always even out. Someday, England may score a goal and need a referee to say it crossed the line when it clearly didn't. Or hasn't that occurred already?

  • Steven Roy27/06/2010 at 14:48

The linesman is on the 18 yard line

  • Christine27/06/2010 at 14:48

  • Steven Roy27/06/2010 at 14:48

  • RG27/06/2010 at 14:49

Pedro Mendes scored a blatent goal 5 years ago that wasn't allowed.

Finished 0-0 and we didn't end up in the Champions League, Robbed.

  • me27/06/2010 at 14:49

    true enough.

  • Steven Roy27/06/2010 at 14:49

They have the appeal etc which they should have had in football years ago

  • RG27/06/2010 at 14:49

If the linesman can't see it, have a line judge who can!

Even those extra refs in the Europa League would have helped.

  • Amy27/06/2010 at 14:50

someone told Andy that FIFA don't want it because it undermines the referee, he says

"yeah great.... its ok to undermine the ref when they suck as bad as that call.... 100 percent ok"

  • RG27/06/2010 at 14:51

I don't think @SeppBlatter will fancy checking his reply feed any time soon.

  • RubberGoat27/06/2010 at 14:52

I think these decisions always even out. Someday, England may score a goal and need a referee to say it crossed the line when it clearly didn't. Or hasn't that occurred already?

Pedro Mendes scored a blatent goal 5 years ago that wasn't allowed.

Finished 0-0 and we didn't end up in the Champions League, Robbed.

Obvious innit. Lord Triesman is right. Football is a fix. This happens too often!

  • Amy27/06/2010 at 14:52

I should go to bed but I might watch this instead just because I'll feel left out if I don't :D

  • Steven Roy27/06/2010 at 14:53

Pedro Mendes scored a blatent goal 5 years ago that wasn't allowed.

It happened in a Scottish league game too. Start at 1:15 The defender catshes the ball as it comes out of the net , hands it to the keeper and they carry on when they realise the ref didn't see the goal

My favourite one is the time Reading v Watford, the ball actually went out of play in the goal line and gave the goal.

Ooooh, and Crystal Palace when he hit the ball, scored and it bounced out and wasn't given.

    No tech then Blatter?

  • Marilene Riddle27/06/2010 at 14:54

So if Germany goes on to win this world cup, will the 2 countries be even?

  • Amy27/06/2010 at 14:55

"before you call for video, call for a referee who can see" says my tv

That wasn't even the one I was looking for. The same referee missed another one. A shot that smashed off the support at the back of the net and came back out. He thought it hit the post and carried on

  • me27/06/2010 at 14:56

some annoying guy, I have no idea :D

  • RG27/06/2010 at 14:57

So if Germany goes on to win this world cup, will the 2 countries be even?

Germany have been the better team, they should be miles ahead to be fair. They probably would be the right winners of this game too... But, they aren't. It should be 2-2. If they win by a goal, no it won't be even.

It was a good game before the incident.

  • RG27/06/2010 at 14:57

some annoying guy, I have no idea :D

That could be any commentator in the world

  • Marilene Riddle27/06/2010 at 14:57

    Jorge Larrionda. From wikipedia:

He is currently one of the world's top referees, having had the highest moment of his career during the 2006 FIFA World Cup, in which he officiated four matches, including a semifinal between Portugal and France. However, his refereeing style has also won him many critics, especially because of the high number of red cards he usually shows. Larrionda has made several controversial decisions during matches involving the United States, and is a often viewed as villain amongst American fans.

  • Steven Roy27/06/2010 at 14:57

who is he and how's his record?

He is Jorge Larrionda from Uruguay. Never heard of him

  • RG27/06/2010 at 14:59

Yeah, I gathered by the other comments.

  • Steven Roy27/06/2010 at 14:59

There is no way the ref can make that decision. He is 25 yards out and has a bunch of players between him and the ball

  • Steven Roy27/06/2010 at 14:59

Not going to be refeering any more matches in this World Cup is he....

    Not his fault

  • RG27/06/2010 at 14:59

  • RubberGoat27/06/2010 at 14:59

There is no way the ref can make that decision. He is 25 yards out and has a bunch of players between him and the ball

So put a sensor in the ball, have a line judge or use a video ref. Other sports do it and they work brilliantly.

  • Marilene Riddle27/06/2010 at 15:00

The point is that we will probably loose now and it will open a whole can of worms...

Does this mean the English players escape from being blasted? Because I don't think they deserve to escape punishment. Especially the defense.

  • RG27/06/2010 at 15:00

He works in his team that includes the linesmen, they made the howler, won't be doing much more.

Upson was shocking, even with the goal. Terry not much better.

But, after we scored, every hope and that

  • Steven Roy27/06/2010 at 15:01

So put a sensor in the ball, have a line judge or use a video ref. Other sports do it and they work brilliantly.

Absolutely. They tried a sensor in the ball for the under 19 world cup and never followed it up

  • Marilene Riddle27/06/2010 at 15:01

Saying FIFA is arrogant is a little over to me. The match hasn't even ended yet!

  • Steven Roy27/06/2010 at 15:05

I see what you are saying, but if EVERYONE in the ground saw it, why didn't he?

No way everyone in the ground saw it. Utterly impossible. How mayny unbiased people thought it was a goal in real time? Anyone who goes to football matches regularly claims for all sorts of decisions for their team whether they believe they deserve it or not. The bench are simply reacting to their own players as are the fans until they get messages or radio telling them that it was a goal

  • Marilene Riddle27/06/2010 at 15:06

I would say Roddick has a great insight because his sport hinges on accurate and great line calls. Surely that means he can put in his two cents?

The 1st tweet was okay, but going on to call out FIFA before they can make a decision is way off. Feels like his usual confrontational self on the tennis court.

The universality of the game: one of the main objectives of FIFA is to protect the universality of the game of association football. This means that the game must be played in the same way no matter where you are in the world. If you are coaching a group of teenagers in any small town around the world, they will be playing with the same rules as the professional players they see on TV

That's a silly position to take I reckon, it's not like anyone says tennis has been ruined because a few courts in the world have hawk-eye and thus it's no longer the same game as played by teenagers in any small town.

  • Marilene Riddle27/06/2010 at 15:13

It's not the same. Football is always 11 vs 11 with only the players taking part. Motor sport is never just 12 teams of 2 drivers in 850bhp cars that cost gazillions other than F1

  • Marilene Riddle27/06/2010 at 15:16

  • Amy27/06/2010 at 15:18

The rules don't need to change but using technology to make the right decisions should happen

they go on to argue about how they can't do it because it would cost to much to put on every pitch for every match. I compare again to tennis because it's all I know, but at Wimbledon for example, they have hawk-eye on 3 courts and not on the other 15. And people are OK with that.

  • RubberGoat27/06/2010 at 15:18

Not the track. Just the rules. Football is a game for the children and the poor. I don't see why rules should be specialized for the 'professionals'.

If they are so worried about using too high tech then use line judges.

By that reasoning, stop all tennis because in kids' games, the players make their own line calls...

so even if it had been allowed, it'd still be 4-2 :D

  • RubberGoat27/06/2010 at 15:26

    We've been Mullered...

  • Pat W27/06/2010 at 15:26

    Deary me. Well done Germany

  • RG27/06/2010 at 15:26

    Cole-Terry-Upson-Johnson

Never should play for England ever again.

  • Steven Roy27/06/2010 at 15:27

so even if it had been allowed, it'd still be 4-2 :D

You can't say that though. Because England would not have needed tp commit so many players forward if they were level

  • RubberGoat27/06/2010 at 15:27

so even if it had been allowed, it'd still be 4-2 :D

Good. Keep going Germany. England needed this. For too long have we had false delusions of grandeur. We are rubbish, we have a league full of foreingers and funny money, no proper development of talent, players who have no incentive to do well and no pride in their jersey.

  • Steven Roy27/06/2010 at 15:28

Nutmegged Glen Johnson with the pass for the goal. Unbelievable

At least Sky are making bucket loads

  • Steven Roy27/06/2010 at 15:29

    ah. I am learning.

If they were level it would be like Lewis saving his car till later in the race but because they didn't get that goal they had to go for fastest lap after fastest lap to catch up and they trashed their brakes doing that

  • Turkey Machine27/06/2010 at 15:29

At least Sky are making bucket loads

But they should be putting it back into the game, instead it goes to those bleeding Murdochs.

Does he play for Spurs? If so, he should be on ;)

    You are planning to sleep?

  • RubberGoat27/06/2010 at 15:35

It's got nothing to do with the coach, it's the players, the league, the greediness of football that's to blame.

  • Amy27/06/2010 at 15:35

    You are planning to sleep?

I start work in 7 hours, I might just to kill some time between now and then.

  • RG27/06/2010 at 15:36

We've had English, Swedish, and Italian coaches and the results stay the same.

All the countries who are rubbish have teams full of over-paid prima donnas with massive egos and no sense of team spirit. There's no pride in the jersey.

The league is full of funny money and buys too many foreigners in stead of developing youths. No wonder teams like Algeria, NZ and Uruguay have surprised - they give their all every time they play...

  • me27/06/2010 at 15:40

    that's a fair point.

    ...oh ;)

  • RG27/06/2010 at 15:42

We've had English, Swedish, and Italian coaches and the results stay the same.

Capello said he would pick players in form. The fact Heskey is anywhere near the team suggests thats rubbish. Upson is playing too despite King-Dawson, even Carragher having better seasons than him. He tried to get Scholes out of retirement even though he is also well past it. There is a lot of blame that can be handed to Capello here.

  • Amy27/06/2010 at 15:42

The league is full of funny money and buys too many foreigners in stead of developing youths. No wonder teams like Algeria, NZ and Uruguay have surprised - they give their all every time they play...

I don't know a lot about football, but I do know that all the favourite players in the team of my Liverpool supporting friend are not English.

I think there is a different but absolutely fundamental problem. Everyone in the squad has only ever played in England. All they know is the premiership. They have no experience of what it is to play in a different country with different systems and different attitudes. I know they play European games but that is still with an English team.

England will never win the world cup until they have a squad with serious experience of playing and living in other countries

  • RG27/06/2010 at 15:43

The Danish player got paid £65,000 for getting to the world cup and failing.

Have you ever got a bonus and a pat on the back just for showing up for work on a Monday? Allright for some innit?

  • Marilene Riddle27/06/2010 at 15:45

German Teamgeist. That's all they need.

  • Steven Roy27/06/2010 at 15:45

Germany have all their players in Germany. And they are winning 4-1.

Different country though and that has not always been the case there. I bet you I can name every England international who has played fo a foreign team in the plast 20 years and every team they have played for. I couldn't name all the French internationals who have played for Arsenal.

I believe the MLS is using the same ball for the 2010 season as well.

Anyways, commiserations to the English side. I imagine that goal that wasn't would have added a blot of drama to the match. :(

Probably means nothing after that, would be like keeping Domenech after Euro 2008

  • RubberGoat27/06/2010 at 15:53

This England team is worse than that at Euro 92...

  • Turkey Machine27/06/2010 at 15:54

I hope not. Football needs to be revolutionised root and branch. It's way too corrupt and greedy - not just in England.

Stop spending money on your prawn sandwiches and foreign players and develop some kids!

  • Steven Roy27/06/2010 at 15:55

Probably means nothing after that, would be like keeping Domenech after Euro 2008

It means it is going to cost the FA a lot to get rid of him and if you were the guy who offered him that how are you going to justify the expense of firing him and his team and hiring replacements? That would cost you your job

  • Journeyer27/06/2010 at 15:57

Stop spending money on your prawn sandwiches and foreign players and develop some kids!

These teams (esp. the foreign-owned ones) are in it to win it. If the best players are abroad, they will get them. They're not gonna prioritize English players just because they're in England.

  • Steven Roy27/06/2010 at 15:57

Fabio thinks they played well until the third goal. Peter Mandleson would be embarrassed with that amount of spin

  • Journeyer27/06/2010 at 15:57

"Err, England, never heard of it."

  • Steven Roy27/06/2010 at 15:58

Stop spending money on your prawn sandwiches and foreign players and develop some kids!

I think the foreigners are an easy target. If the home grown kids were good enough they would get a chance. The kids have to benefit by growing up around the top foreigners. Imagine you are a 16 year old striker at Liverpool and you are around Torres for example

The home grown kids are not good enough because nobody can be bothered spending money on developing them when it's cheaper to let other countries do it and sign them cheap when they turn 16.

  • Journeyer27/06/2010 at 16:00

WIth all the money the top 6 have, they should have done something about it by now.

Money has not been good for the game - it's gone on the prawn sandwich brigade, while ticket prices have gone up and none in devlopment...

  • RG27/06/2010 at 16:04

And yet Chelsea have not produced a single player, and Arsenal have almost no Enlgishmen.

This is the situation. The lower league clubs, the likes of Crystal Palace-Sheffield United bring up talented players. These players are snapped up by Chelsea etc when they are 16-17. They end up released when they are the likes of 21 to a League 1-2 club. Thats the issue.

  • RG27/06/2010 at 16:05

Final thoughts. FA, if you go after 'Arry I will kill you all, and so will the rest of us Spurs fans.

New Prem League rules are saying a team must have a select number of homegrown players in a 25 man squad, 7 I do believe. Its a start, but there needs to be a winter break.

    Really off now.

Because club should always come before country and the Leagues should be set up so that they entertain and nurture talent to make the national team great.

Well I'm saying I think it's wrong and that the whole system is upside down. I think the EPL, Serie A and Ligue 1 are all backwards...

So you want clubs who play 50 games a season to set up their who system to suit an International team that plays 5

  • Steven Roy27/06/2010 at 16:18

that's crazy. how did that happen?

I think it is sensible. The league contributes massively more to England's reputation than the national team ever could. Football is a club game the internationals are just a bonus

  • RubberGoat27/06/2010 at 16:19

No, I'm saying I want the league to invest in it's own future and develop the game rather than just take from it. then both win.

As it stands the clubs are just independent franchise who just make money for themsleves...

  • Steven Roy27/06/2010 at 16:19

i didn't get chance to say thank you to rocket redhead for this post before the game.

Great post. I thought she didn't know anything about football.

They are investing in their own future and they all have academies etc

They are investing in their own future and they all have academies etc

So why, in the 10 years Chelsea have had one, have they not produced an English international? Why do they resort to buying a French 16 year old instead?

  • Steven Roy27/06/2010 at 16:26

They will buy the French player either because they think he will one day make their team or that they can sell him on for a profit. To me young players breaking into top European clubs should be a rare thing. Any club that can afford to pay experienced international players would need a really good reason to put a kid in their team.

  • Alex Andronov27/06/2010 at 17:39

I do have a suggestion on how to "fix" English football. It's something I've mentioned a few times before in a few places and it certainly wouldn't work in real life because real life doesn't work like that.

I have a friend who was founding chairman of AFC Wimbledon (the club that was formed after Wimbledon football club was sold to Milton Keynes). And he was explaining to me why there isn't football on the television at 1pm on a Saturday. It's because it's not allowed to be on to encourage people to actually go to games.

But the problem is that lots of people have moved around the country and so they can't physically go to their game. The game is still recorded in full and is broadcast in other countries and fans then have to watch online strrams illegally to watch the game at all. And there still isn't the television capacity to watch all games.

Obviously technology is the solution to this the whole thing could be sold online. I suggested this and my friend said that this might be bad for smaller teams like his. His team is supported as a second team by a lot of supporters of other clubs. If people live a long way away from their home team they might not be able to get to their own clubs games so they came to his.

So I decided that this online system would work like this. We would sell you online reliable streaming of every match home and away of your team and the team geographically closest to your postcode. The money would be split fifty : fifty. So if you support Chelsea but you live in Manchester then your fee would go half to Chelsea and perhaps half to Manchester City, or perhaps a combined Ryman's league team that are just down the road but you've never bothered to support.

The idea would mean people were supporting their local grass roots teams and getting a decent way to watch football. And it would encourage people to start and support local grass roots football because there would actually be money in it.

It's obviously a totally crazy idea. But I like it :)

  • Steven Roy27/06/2010 at 17:44

It's obviously a totally crazy idea. But I like it :)

I don't think it is a crazy idea but there is an easier way to split the money. Half to the clubs playing and half into a pot that is split up say twice a season equally amongst all the competing teams.

  • RG27/06/2010 at 17:45

I have a friend who was founding chairman of AFC Wimbledon (the club that was formed after Wimbledon football club was sold to Milton Keynes).

Erik Samuelson? Heard him on the Non-League show, brilliant person.

Yeah well that would do it. I do still like the idea that you would suddenly have access to the local teams games online. So there is a part of it that helps people support their local teams....

"Just five pounds a month could help sponsor a player on your local team, and give you access to online football!!!!" ;)

  • Alex Andronov27/06/2010 at 17:50

Ah no not Erik, although he's great, Kris Stewart.

    He was the first Chairman.

  • RG27/06/2010 at 18:58

They are watching so many things and have to watch the ball being played and the position of the guy who is going to receive it at the same time. None of us suggested offside before the replay

  • RG27/06/2010 at 19:00

Tell me how the refs/linesmen didn't see that one?

Linesmen get things wrong, they miss obvious things sometimes, it is a tough job, it is his fault but there needs to be help for him, especially in this day and age when there are cameras everywhere.

  • Marilene Riddle27/06/2010 at 19:01

England scored a goal to make it 2-2 and the ref decided it wasn't over the line despite it being in by 3 feet. To be fair though the BBC at the time said that would have made no difference and the team was rubbish

BBC have a full 15 minutes to cover and you can't do it all with that match. ITV have about 8 minutes, no excuse there.

Most people watching are English and want to know about England really.

BBC have a full 15 minutes to cover and you can't do it all with that match. ITV have about 8 minutes, no excuse there.

Errrm having not seen the first half, I can say I haven't really seen proper highlights. They didn't even show the "controversial" goal

  • Alison27/06/2010 at 19:30

Errrm having not seen the first half, I can say I haven't really seen proper highlights. They didn't even show the "controversial" goal

They just showed the ref sneaking a peek at the big screen replay and were outraged,

  • RubberGoat27/06/2010 at 19:30

So what are they going to do now then? Interview the players from their homes in the UK?

  • me27/06/2010 at 19:31

  • Steven Roy27/06/2010 at 19:36

You can play in the England defence. You don't know what day it is either

  • RubberGoat27/06/2010 at 19:36

    Yes, against Brazil.

  • Steven Roy27/06/2010 at 19:40

Tevez knows how to use the jambalaya ball

  • guille230627/06/2010 at 19:43

They just showed the ref sneaking a peek at the big screen replay and were outraged,

that was very wrong from the stadium TV. you can't show replays of that kind of plays if the referee is not allowed to use them to take decisions

  • RG27/06/2010 at 19:46

Whoa, you do not do a back pass in that situation

  • Marilene Riddle27/06/2010 at 19:48

    Selfish there. Should have passed.

  • Marilene Riddle27/06/2010 at 19:57

    Bye bye Tevez.

  • guille230627/06/2010 at 19:57

  • RG27/06/2010 at 19:58

Don't blame him, he's got two already, he wants a hat trick doesnt he.

  • RG27/06/2010 at 19:58

    No goal for me

No, didn't look it, defender was on the line i think

  • guille230627/06/2010 at 19:58

  • Steven Roy27/06/2010 at 19:59

    3-1

  • guille230627/06/2010 at 19:59

Don't blame him, he's got two already, he wants a hat trick doesnt he.

given mexico's defense efforts, it was probable

Will this lot beat the Germans you reckon?

    the first half team? yes

    the second half team? no

Ah but they have just played the easy game in the second half - if they do that against the Germans the result will be the same...

  • RG27/06/2010 at 20:19

Mexico played well, took it to Argentina. Unlucky with their first goal and 3-1 is harsh. Overall though, best team are going through.

  • RG27/06/2010 at 20:20

    Ooooh Messi.

Its inevitable his first goal will be the winner in the final I bet.

  • Marilene Riddle27/06/2010 at 20:20

    Messi still can't score....

  • RubberGoat27/06/2010 at 20:20

Messi is just awesome. He's my first pick in any fantasy team...

  • guille230627/06/2010 at 20:21

there should be a law stating that at some point before the end one goalkeeper must let Messi score.. :P

  • Marilene Riddle27/06/2010 at 20:21

Full time: Argentina 3 Mexico 1

  • RG27/06/2010 at 20:22

    Well done Argentina.

  • Steven Roy27/06/2010 at 20:22

Good game. Argentina in cruise mode for a lot of it

  • Marilene Riddle27/06/2010 at 20:22

Messi is just awesome. He's my first pick in any fantasy team...

Not mine, sorry. Prefer the usual out-and-out 2 strikers rather than auxiliaries.

  • Marilene Riddle27/06/2010 at 20:24

So Argentina vs Germany! Hoping Die Mannschaft can defeat Messi's team without him scoring a single goal either (like Rooney). ;)

  • RG27/06/2010 at 20:25

So Argentina vs Germany! Hoping Die Mannschaft can defeat Messi's team without him scoring a single goal either (like Rooney). ;)

I said it at 5pm today it will be a Uruguay-Argentina final. I stand by that, Argentina to win 3-2 aet.

  • Steven Roy27/06/2010 at 20:25

You will get this all the way to the final and beyond. You can guarantee at half time in the final unless it is the greatest game in history someone will make a comment that England could have been here had it not been for ......

My RGie mate said RGentina might do well because in '86 they qualified badly and won. We shall see!

  • RubberGoat27/06/2010 at 20:57

How can Lineker qualify England's bad performance with "Well, we'd never beat RGentina anyway..."?

  • Steven Roy27/06/2010 at 21:01

How can Lineker qualify England's bad performance with "Well, we'd never beat RGentina anyway..."?

Standard procedure. Before the tournament England are in with a serious chance of winning the WC. As soon as they are kicked out the team are rubbish, the manager is rubbish and other teams are way better than expected. The fact this happens every single time you would think would make theim more realistic. I can't remeber the stat but it is a ridiculously long time since England beat Brazil, Argentina, Italy or Germany in a competitive international

At this point I would like to shout "I TOLD YOU SO" to many people, but apparently someone got angry the last time i did that because apparently you're not allowed to be honest about england whilst they're in the world cup, but i shant because im lovely really!
