Hello everyone, it’s a brand new week down at SW19 and after a very special opening week let’s hope we can expect more of the same brilliant tennis matches over the next 7 days. After the traditional ‘Middle Sunday’ day off, let’s quickly look back to what happened on Saturday to refresh our memories.
Saturday was a busy day on Centre Court, with Serena, Rafa and Andy Murray all performing as expected and defeating their opponents, securing their place in this week’s schedule. On other courts notable successes include Robin Soderling, Jo-Wilfred Tsonga and Maria Sharapova. Not content with beating Dominika Cibulkova a first time Serena Williams teamed up with her sister in the afternoon for a doubles match against Dominika and her partner Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Poor Dominika.
Let’s move onto today’s action then, which promises to be great! On Centre Court we have 3 rather exciting matches;
- Roger Federer vs Jugen Melzer
- Serena Williams vs Maria Sharapova
- Sam Querry vs Andy Murray
Moving to Court 1 we have more awesome matches to look forward to;
- Kim Clijsters vs Justine Henin
- Novak Djokovic vs Lleyton Hewitt
- Paul- Henri Mathieu vs Rafael Nadal
Other notable matches include Venus Williams vs Jarmila Groth, and Andy Roddick vs Yen-Hsun Lu.
In my last Wimbledon post I mentioned my 'player of the day', well I'd like to bring this idea back and suggest that if you are not sure of who to support today you should consider cheering on Sam Querrey. I personally don't know anything about Sam, however if you have any questions I'm sure Amy our local Tennis guru will help you. My main reason for wanting people to support him is due to his misfortune in the double tournament as Isner (remember him?) and Sam pulled out of the doubles last week. I'm going to be in two minds about the Sam vs Andy match but it should be great!
I’m not even sure it it’s possible to watch all the matches that are going on all at once, but what I am sure that a great way to keep up with all the news is to stay tuned to the comments below. We can’t promise a match of epic proportions as with Isner – Mahut, and Andy Murray won’t be playing in front of the Queen, but I’m sure this coming week at Wimbledon will be just as exciting as we draw closer to the finals. Bring on the tennis!
It's quite an epic day for tennis really. Loads of names I recognise :)
woot! I am happy Roger is on first :D
Can I request this video be put into a future Wimbledon post? What's not to like about Andy and Novak rapping?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8xT74EJ8vbw
Well, you know, there are still a couple of days needing volunteers :)
YAAAAY SAM.
Here are some facts about Sam.
1) He is really tall. Still not as tall as Little Johnny though. That is a picture of the two of them making Novak Djokovic look positively tiny. And bonus Marat Safin.
2) His cheering squad are called the Samurai. I like cheering squads with names, although his are kind of annoying and rude and I prefer it when they're not there.
3) Last year one of his friends decided he would be his intern, and he was the first player ever to have one. Dan the Intern was awesome and I miss him.
4) Something about his eyes means he looks high ALL THE TIME.
5. In which we learn about Sam's ace face.
That's not actually anything useful, but that's OK :D
I think that's exactly what Lou had in mind though!
Talking of Sam:
"You hear them cheering for the other guy, and you assume they like the other guy. They don't dislike you. They like both players. They just like him a little more. I think it'll be 99% for Murray and, like, my mom and dad and sister cheering for me."
awww
Beeb text:
...there is a healthy crowd out to see fellow junior Sabina Sharipova. "Big crowd at Court 15," texts BBC Sport's Caroline Cheese. "I think some people may be confused."

:D :D
I have been on my hands and knees cleaning grout but now I shall stop making my house so shiny it hurts, because it's almost roger tiiiime
Jankovic is not doing well. 4-1 down in the first set.
JJ looks sad :(
IT'S ROGER TIIIIME
in honour of Roger time, here he is singing a wee ditty.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QFE3qP2ZS0
aw, JJ retired.
oooh Scottish commentator. I like the way he says Federer
I have nothing to say :D
I want one of those Swiss jackets :D
Henin breaks in the first round. I don't like when the Belgians play because I would like them both to win WImbledon. I like Kimmy more though so she needs to break back! now!
woo Roger breaks!
Laura will be up soon in her first round girls singles. Finally, a match she might win :D
Oh. Jarmila groth has a break on Venus. Go aussi I have never heard of!
Melzer breaks back. Boo.
she's only been australian for about 6 months :D
Ah that explains it then
Rog breaks back again. Amy stresses.
first set to Rogelio!
And I think Henin means business
I find it odd that you can be a Junior and a not-Junior at the same time.
it's kinda cheating, she is only doing juniors because she was fail at the senior level.
It wouldn't have happened with S Club!!!
Exactly!
ooh, Anna is there!
Who is Anna?
Anna Wintour, the Vogue editor. Roger has the weirdest friends.
Who was the basis for the main character in Devil Wears Prada...
Not the main character but... Wassernames character...
Perhaps if we find you an odd job, you can be his friend too.
he is also friends with these two.
I try to imagine a universe where Gavin Rossdale is friends with Roger Federer, and it's hard. But it's this universe!
yaaaaay Kimmy!
"Federer takes the second set to lead Melzer 6-3 6-2 after 49 minutes."
Back to his old self then.
"thats anna wintour, editor of vogue. I realise I've lost my man card with that knowledge"
I said I would go to bed after Roger but I think that was a lie, I really want to watch Sam and Andy. And a bit of Rafa since he seems to be struggling.
match ppoooooint!
That was quick!
the saying 'get off my lawn' was originally said by Roger, at Wimbledon #rogerfacts
Kimmy is serving for it too! Tonight is awesome :D
yaaaay my top man and top lady are through. Now I don't care what happens tonight :D :D
Novak just gave his hat to someone who wanted his autograph!
Laura Robson won.
For Mr C, Tom is back: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tennis/8768817.stm
:)
he needs telling that Maria's nickname is Masha, not Shara.
Shara, hair pulled tight into plaited pigtail, narrows her eyes and stares across the net, her long gold earrings swaying.
Hehe.
Ah, shot de jour from the fierce-faced Shara, opening her body up for the forehand down the line before pulling a whipper cross court instead.
righto.
I kinda let you down with the FBFB didn't I? No dinking or anything.
not a single wallop.
okay, who is the female commentator? so far:
oooh
waa-oohh
ya
whaaa-ooooh
what? tell me what? i have no idea what those noises mean.
Oo-er! I don't think that should have been published before the watershed!
On the TV?
yeah, have given up with it. she's completely useless in her designated role as match commentator. tom ftw.
That page will keep Fourstar's EOTW series in plentiful supply of new material!
Serena crouches, treating Sir Trevor McDonald and Sir Clifford of Richard in the Royal Box to an eyeful of red knick-knacks.
i.love.tom.
That's Tracy Austin. From what I see on the internet everyone in the world hates her.
James May is there!
You will forgive me for not wanting the FBFB to be quite like that though :)
waa-oohh
Oh yes, that makes sense now. She isn't the best.
"Come on!" screams Nicole, and fist-clenches with slightly frightening intensity.
it could so work.
James May says they should get a tennis player in their reasonably priced car. I'd watch if they did that :D
Schumacher prances around the stunning Valencia scenery like a little girl amid a field of roses, skipping slowly, beautifully, before a stop from the scenes of the worst horror movie see him languish further down the order as if the gods had turned their once favoured backs against him
GO NOLE.
My commentators before this match were like 'oh Lleyton will walk all over him blah blah blah.' Now they are quiet. Silly national bias
Genius :)
take note christine.
Noted.
I would venture to say, though, that the problem with F1 is there are too many cars. I would get halfway through looking a word up in the thesaurus and something else would happen. You'd end up with lots of half sentences. Flowery, but unfinished. :)
Amy, have you heard of any of these people?
Qualifier Kaia Kanepi books a quarter-final that only a genius, or a fool, would have predicted. The Estonian will face Petra Kvitova tomorrow after a 6-2 6-4 win over Klara Zakopalova.
I would be lying if I said I'd heard of Kanepi before about 2 days ago, and the others, not at all.
chop chop centre court, wanna see me some sam
I like this game :)
Lewis hesitates for a moment, the red sun reflecting in the silver safety car reminds him of the red Ferrari in his mirrors. He squeezes the throttle on his steering wheel. Behind him Alonso wants to throttle him.

(hearts)
f1 talk like tom. we need a wiki page :)
Go on then. You've got no excuse now.
We like a volunteer here :)
true.
x1 f1 pride and prejudice page, coming right up.
Webber snakes behind the unsure Heikki's Lotus and tries to crowbar through a gap too small - he's caught off guard and launches into the air like a heavily-winged crimson taurine. Sickeningly he spins through the air like a bad fairground ride, picking up extra style points for collecting the sponsor's barrier, before slapping the deck again like a rubbish hammer and spearing into the wall. As if to show disbelief in the whole proceedings, he chucks his steering wheel out like litter from a moving car...

have added RG's, please add your own.
You did it!
two sets for noleeeeeee
Masha loses :(
my commentators are still writing nole off :(
why is nole always sick. all the time. booooo.
I wish she could have taken a bit longer. I am not home yet.
Nole has called for the doctor so this match might never end. Or he might retire and kill me :(
Aww, poor fella. What is up with him?
from what the courtside mics picked up he has got pain in his stomach and there is a lot of air coming out and he is finding it hard to breathe.
Ah, not good.
doctor says the pills he has given him will take 20 minutes to start working. Come on Nole, you can do it!
ooh ooh HOW DID I MISS THAT SAM HAD STARTED
It's Tom, innit? Never rests, that fella: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tennis/8769584.stm
Murray holds but not easily. Woo!
Well, I am going to miss quite a lot of the start. Make it a long match, boys.
how long until you get home?
When Sam serves he makes contact with the ball at a height of 3.1m #giant
"Sorry Officer, I didn't want to miss the Tennis..."
someone wearing a shirt that said 'please show me on tv' wasn't actually paying attention when they did.
FAIL.
I have found 5live and Tim henman. What is this crazy Am frequency?
gooo Nole!
Boo Woz is out. Will she blame the sun in her eyes again?
that side of the draw is full of people I've never heard of now, Serena has a cakewalk to the final.
um, Murray, you should have won this set like 5 minutes ago. chop chop.
oh, Murray FAIL
This doesn't look as fun as Wii Tennis...
ooh and Kim is out again playing doubles on court 18. I love when my favourites play doubles :D
Murray threw away 3 set points. Could be a long match.
Sam has 3 break points. COME ON SAM.
Nole gets broken back. Boo.
Sam fail. Nothing is going right at 2.32am!
Samuel and Andrew were both a bit fail near the end there, but Andrew takes it.
Nole!!! Almost there you poor wee sick thing.
wooooo!
oh my, he just ripped his shirt. Novak Hulkovic.
I have a querrey - is andy on the big round court or centre court?
centre
Awesome, I like that one. Because of that he is going to win now
I think Nole being awesome is my order to sleep. Almost 5 hours worth, woo!
andy now 2-0 up on sets :)
andy is shouting at his shots
i talked to water molecules the other day, i am therefore feeling his pain :P
Match point!
Murray wins :D
I missed it, didn't I?
Quaters now?
Boo :(
I think so
#betterthanengland
#areyouwatchingfabio
i cant believe there are no comments on here about roddick losing to someone i have never heard of. it was a huge upset!. that'll teach me for sleeping :(
Wait till you see tomorrow's Wimbledon post
Oh Randy :(
i could totally get into tennis after reading it. yourself and lukeh have opened my eyes to tennis.
I meant to mention the crouchers and I forgot. I am sure I can fit them in on a post on an entirely different subject some time in the future
what sport usually follows wimbledon?
Golf isn't it. British Open. I can't imagine that will be live commented.
Starts in 16 days 4 hours 39minutes http://www.opengolf.com/
It isn't at Birkdale again is it??? *please god no*
you'd do well to convince me to watch golf. i did at least see 15 minutes of tennis yesterday though.
Oh St Andrews. Phew!!
Not if the Visit Scotland button is anythng to go by. Seems to be St Andrews
It lasts too long and too little happens. They need to add a time element so that they have to sprint after the ball or race them little buggy things. Combine a golfer, his caddy and a rally driver as a team. That would be entertaining
I'm sure Heikki would be well up for it.
I'm sure the Tour de France or Goodwood will have some somewhere..
