The start of another week, and we've got more testing to watch. The teams get going in Barcelona today, and this time, it's testing with added Brawn. Thankfully, though, there are other things to talk about than just ex-Honda these days:

  • It looks like Bruno Senna is going to give Le Mans a go, as he's missed out on an F1 opportunity this year. It looks like all involved think it would be good for the young Brazilian to get some more mileage under his belt. Well, if it works for Bourdais, it can work for anyone!
  • Yesterday's installment of the Races to Remember series looked at the European Grand Prix at Donington. If you've got memories of this event, of the racing, or of the circuit itself, then please leave your thoughts in the comments.
  • And while you're in the real-time comments, don't forget you can check out the new share image button. It's particularly useful today, if you spot any good pictures from Barca.

That's all for now. Let's hope we can read something into the testing performance today, although I highly doubt it. While we wait for the times to trickle in, I will see you in the comments.

Hello SPC. Are teams only running one car each at these tests because they are not allowed more, or are they testing the only piece of complete machinary they have? Or is there some other explaination? I am confused.

Maybe the testing mileage restriction is the case

A very interesting article from Joe Saward (Grand Prix.com)

It's interesting the comments he makes about Nick Fry still being involved and the circumstances of Gonda selling the team - he cites the usual reasons but also speculated that maybe the Max Mosley affair could have played a part in the exit and that F1 could have been used to oust members of the Gonda board as it was perceived as a waste of money - could well be true, especially as the company is Japanese and hate embarrasment!

Also, he takes a nice swipe at those who 'rehash stories and add an opinion' *cough*GMM*cough* ;-)

I think he has a fair point although I wonder if he is being a bit 'protectionist' because he has a press pass and he sees blogging as a potential threat - sorta like wikipedia is to the Encyclopedia Britannica?

Give us your opinions guys! :-)

  • F1Wolf09/03/2009 at 09:54

I think the comments on that post are interesting.

    what happened to him ?

The other point to consider is that these amateur websites have low overheads and are thus able to offer their services to bigger news organisations at a lower price than the professional reporters can afford to offer because they have to pay $40k a year in travelling expenses. This is putting the professionals into more and more difficulty and ultimately may kill off this small group of experienced and well-connected professionals.

If that happens the available sources of good information will become even smaller and thus the quality will go down.

well I don't know, I read GrandPrix.com, but they also sent recently several rumours and speculations that turned out to be just that, rumours and speculations ...

Brawn GP/Button at the top of the timesheets this morning in Barcelona

Brawn have a lot of empty space to fill up with sponsors, I fully expect them to be near the top of the time sheets this week even if it requires running under weight to achieve it.

    No doubt Alianora will find this and sort us out. {Comment #10}

This year, teams can run as many cars as they please, provided they stick to the other limitations of testing such as the 15000km limit. There used to be a rule restricting testing to one or two cars at a time but it was rescinded last year. I am not sure why even the richest teams are only sending one car to the European tests (even though Ferrari and Toyota took two to Bahrain) - perhaps they are trying to bring out the Melbourne stuff as late as possible? There does seem to be more secrecy than usual in the paddock...

    brilliant :)

i've commented on the post. personally i don't read it the way you've suggested.

i think he's just mightily fed up with websites re-hashing old (and often incorrect) news, claiming it as fact and duping fans in the process.

there are sites out there with ideas above their station, who've amassed a small following and declared themselves to be all-knowing when it comes to the subject of formula one.

the key point that joe mentions, and the line i love the most, is that proper f1 journalists can "...can pick up the phone and call the movers and shakers to verify the rumours that they hear"

there are many wannabes, making a killing on advertising from page views, who simply cannot do that.

  • Flibster09/03/2009 at 12:10

With the gold on the tip of the nose it kinda looks like a ducks head.. :D

The amount of air underneath that rear wing is astonishing - I'm pretty sure it's just the angle of the photo though

  • Maverick09/03/2009 at 12:17

That toro rosso looks really…. strange. I can’t put my finger on why though

The STR rear wing actually looks non-2009 spec in the photo but I think that's just the camera angle as it is the proper width in more front-on shots that I've seen.

"While variances in fuel loads and the different testing programmes being followed from team to team mean that the times themselves are not a reliable indicator of outright performance, the reincarnated Honda outfit will still have been pleased to see the BGP 001 complete 30 laps on the opening morning of its first public outing."

no-one’s going to get everything right, always.

I am not saying, but I am not the one writing that post on Joe Savard's blog ...

now, there is a Bwin sponsorship for Brawn story on GrandPrix.com ending this way:

It remains to be seen if the rumours are confirmed.

my question is, why Mr Savard does not pick up the phone and calls someone in garage (as he says it should be done) to confirm or deny the rumour before running the story ?

don't take me wrong, I am not trying to slam him. I am just a bit surprised by the tone of that post. But I very much understand where his frustration is coming from. I do experience the same in my daily line of work (that has nothing to do with F1 :-) ) . Doing things right simply costs money but there are people around who can achieve same or similar result for much less, some only by chance but some very consistently. That is a fact one simply has to accept. People will not be forever buying your stuff only because you tell them you are doing it better than others ... Applies to any business, not only to F1 reporting.

  • me09/03/2009 at 16:17

my question is, why Mr Savard does not pick up the phone and calls someone in garage (as he says it should be done) to confirm or deny the rumour before running the story ?

he's already answered that argument further down in his comments hasn't he?

i'm sure joe has the number of honda's press office, but there are times when no-ones going confirm a story like that. regardless, that isn't the point he's arguing, is it?

  • me09/03/2009 at 16:33

People will not be forever buying your stuff only because you tell them you are doing it better than others … Applies to any business, not only to F1 reporting.

fair point. which is why i think the independent f1 journalist will likely cease to exist in the future. the numbers no longer add up.

that may not be an entirely bad thing, and maybe joe's overreacting. i think he may have picked the wrong example to kick off with, but maybe the frustrations needed to come out today.

Even so, the fact is - their car DOES have some pace in it!

Any car can have pace if it is running 60kg lighter than the others. We know the engine has the power to get the job done so if the basic aero package is close to reasonable an empty fuel tank and no balllast should make it faster than cars doing serious testing.

There is more to be gained by running in clear air and getting the basic package sorted out that trying out overtaking moves. Everyone knows that everyone else will have a new aero package for Melbourne and there may be something in those packages to make overtaking more difficult.

    "Error: Could not submit comment."

Using Firefox 3 on Windows XP :(

  • Alex Andronov09/03/2009 at 17:15

i’ve referred to them as ‘honda’ at least 3 times today…and had to correct myself when trying to say ‘Brawn F1?… Brawn GP just doesn’t roll of the tongue. It’s gonna take some getting used to.

And I think they aren't even Brawn F1 are they? I think maybe GP?

    and now it's working?!?!?

  • Lukeh09/03/2009 at 17:17

And I think they aren’t even Brawn F1 are they? I think maybe GP?

They're Brawn GP, but Brawn F1 sounds better. Of course, Bernie absolutely refuses to let anyone be called F1 in F1... ;)

  • Alex Andronov09/03/2009 at 17:18

They’re Brawn GP, but Brawn F1 sounds better. Of course, Bernie absolutely refuses to let anyone be called F1 in F1… ;)

Especially as Brawn and Grand sort of rhyme.

  • Steven Roy09/03/2009 at 17:20

got ya. were they hiding anything with those, or just experimenting?

I guess that Renault were trying to see how much downforce they coule create with the vanes in place. Now that they have that figure they can decide whether to spend a lot of money trying to generate that downforce legally. Either that or they were using the downforce there to balance the weight distribution and now they have managed to move enough weight forward.

  • lou09/03/2009 at 17:20

And I think they aren’t even Brawn F1 are they? I think maybe GP?

    that's what i meant. sorry i didn't really describe it properly :)

    sidepodspace update

NASA are just trying to confuse us now. Discovery still looks good for launch on Wednesday which is not confusing. However there will be a six hour spacewalk on Tuesday ie tomorrow by two of the members of the Expedition 18 team who form the permanent crew of the ISS. Starting at 12:20pm EDT 17:20 UK with NASA TV coverage starting 20 minutes earlier ISS Commander Mike Fincke and Flight Engineer Yuri Lonchakov will install EXPOSE-R, a European experiment that exposes seeds and spores to the environement of space.

  • Steven Roy09/03/2009 at 18:02

anyone know why teams have started cooling the front brakes via the side wheel covers, rather than the traditional, forward facing, air inlets?

Those are illegal aerodynamic devices but because they first appeared on a Ferrari they are legal. They don't cool the brakes as much as a standard duct and twice last year Ferrari had to remove theirs to stop the brakes overheating which tells you how good they are.

They exist to manage airflow around the wheels which is one of the most complicated areas to manage.

  • Flibster09/03/2009 at 18:03

anyone know why teams have started cooling the front brakes via the side wheel covers, rather than the traditional, forward facing, air inlets?

I suspect with the size of that front wing it's easier - and any flow over the brakes is better than none.

Seems to be mainly when the car is being moved though, as the brake disk rotates then all the disk is getting the cooler air. When stationary they go for the duct.

  • me09/03/2009 at 18:03

They exist to manage airflow around the wheels which is one of the most complicated areas to manage.

i know what they are :)

my question is, why is it more efficient to cool the brakes from the side rather than the front, when the cooler's connection is shaped to fit on the front?

  • me09/03/2009 at 18:04

quick heads up for the geeky ones out there.

christine requested some time ago that we have an option to run various bits of sidepodcast on the desktop, rather than inside a browser.

ideally this would include realtime commenting, and maybe some live video streaming too. we've sort of run out of time during he off-season, but have at least made a start.

if you're familiar with adobe air, and don't mind installing rough and ready desktop software, you can download the installer here:

    http://www.sidepodcast.com/desktop/sidepodcastdesktop.air

i'm writing this comment from the application now, and it'll work on windows, mac and linux. it isn't a fully fledged rich application as yet, and we know it must do things like, pop-up alerts when new comments come in. it also doesn't handle external links properly either.

what it is though, is a step towards creating a collection of rich clients that will enable to do even more than we can currently do in the browser. it won't be for everyone, but since using it, i have found i'm less prone to closing the application by accident, which i frequently did with browser tabs.

we figured it was worth throwing the idea out there, so that if either of us mention "sidepodcast desktop" in the future, you'll at least know what we're talking about.

  • Jon Waldock09/03/2009 at 19:16

    nope... and yes.

the version that we want to make, will include some peer-to-peer technology (MSN style), which means if MT does go down, we can still talk to each other.

however, at the moment we all point directly at MT.

    That's a good one!

  • me09/03/2009 at 19:46

one other thing to mention, is we're moving the live commenting page before the start of the season. that will give us the following urls:

/desktop will likely be a download page, with installtion instructions.

as we release the "movable boxes" version of lclt, you'll be able to see it at the new url, while the old one keeps working. at the moment, the page shows the realtime shell, but please ignore that.

    any questions?

However, with the teams supplied by them it could end up having Force India, BrawnGP and Toro Rosso added to the list.

surely Brawn GP would try and adapt the kers system the team worked so hard on rather than just getting one from Mclaren?

  • Flibster09/03/2009 at 20:43

surely Brawn GP would try and adapt the kers system the team worked so hard on rather than just getting one from Mclaren?

Depends if they can integrate it in time.

  • Le Wombat du BOL09/03/2009 at 20:46

Nice PR move from Brawn but they need sponsors so "magical" speed's something to do with trying to impress potential moneybags. Old Arrows or Prost trick when they would send Jos the boss or good old Jean out to do a few qualifying laps. The only thing that can save the team from potential embarrassement is the return of D.Richards. B.A.R. were going to win the championship in 1999 but they were beaten even by Minardi. Besides, what's fat old Bubens is doing there? Veteran drivers are safe and slow, they perform when in the mood. Generally it's all talk, before the season they're raring to go ("fitter than ever", "faster than ever", "thinner than ever") then after the 2nd race "I-realized-how-my-family-is-important-to-me" talk starts. I think even Mika Salo (who was the 1st ever B.A.R. driver to actually finish the race) would've been faster!

Unfortunately, Brawn GP is likely to replace Force India at the back of the field.

  • Steven Roy09/03/2009 at 20:46

surely Brawn GP would try and adapt the kers system the team worked so hard on rather than just getting one from Mclaren?

Given that they don't have stacks of money and don't need to create loads of work for themselves and that the diffeerence between any two KERS systems is likely to make no real performance difference I doubt it. Besides if I was Mercedes or McLaren I wouldn't allow them to use a system that may be better and there would be a clause in the contract to that effect.

No, Flibster. My sources get absolutely correct information. Nothing made up here! Perhaps technically, a less than correct use of grammar for the proper choice of words (like when to use "hanged" vs. "hung", but we are way past GMM's level at that point...

no worries sir. we've had a couple of very kind donations this month.

talking of which, we're probably going to do more with the donation button in the future. maybe make some kind of roll-of-honour section on the (redesigned) site for anyone who's contributed.

when people donate, we can't tell whether they'd prefer to be anonymous or not, so we might end up emailing everyone soon and asking if it's okay.

just thought we should throw the concept out there. if anyone has suggestions for other ways we can give credit, please yell.

Yes, for some reason the robotic arm is called Luke.

    genuine contribution time!

so what do we all reckon to mclarens apparently dire lap times on testing so far? autosport say they have been testing a new floor (though i don't see why that would explain poor lap times unless it's rubbish!) and some people think they are simply holding back so as not to reveal their true performance to their rivals.

Testing means about as much as Virgin's contribution to F1. Wait until Qualifying in Melbourne before we can see the REAL performance!

I think McLaren will be at the front come Melbourne. Nothing that happens in testing can be believed. There is an old saying in motor racing that goes back to the early days of the sport when races were started with a green flag.

When the greenflag drops the bullsh*t stops. The implication being that anything that happens till the serious running starts is bull.

  • Scott Woodwiss09/03/2009 at 22:31

No, I don't have a new laptop. In fact, I'm just waiting for the recovery discs to revive my existing one. I'm just using my mum's laptop.

So don't worry, I'm not going anywhere! I was commenting earlier on today from the library but I wasn't sure if you guys were taking any notice.

Apparently McLaren have been easing off on the straight.

McLaren also traditionally run a large fuel load and also a conservative setup during testing.

it's not normal to see them this far back at this point of the test schedule though.

New series of air crash investigation, get in.

In the sense of the show, not the crashes

Well it’s interesting but a bit sensationalist. Not as bad as “Seconds from DISAAASTER!” though (and it’s even worse in Danish!)

The Piper Alpha SFD episode is particularly tacky and came a bit too close to home for my liking

Ahhh, The Piper Alpha, the's safeest airplane. You can just barely get killed in it.....

There is a facebook group with something like 100 000+ members that is dedicated to gaffer/duct tape :-D

I wouldn't be surprised to find more than one F1 car held together with it though - it seems to keep rally cars on the 'road' after all........

I think there is a rule now that limits the number of cars they can test at any one time. I think the limit now is one.

    No doubt Alianora will find this and sort us out. {Comment #10}

There is no restriction on the number of cars in a test - that rule was scrapped in 2008 when the 30,000km rule was introduced. The regulation changes, resulting in teams wanting to release their definite components as late as possible and thus not waste their time making components that may not be of use (even in testing) shortly after production, is the most likely cause of the reluctance of teams to send multiple cars to European testing.

  • Alianora La Canta10/03/2009 at 10:22

    i had to take my shoes off in textiles today cause someone wanted to draw them. that’s 2 hours of standing on a cold floor {Comment #37}

  • Alianora La Canta10/03/2009 at 11:36

    They don’t cool the brakes as much as a standard duct and twice last year Ferrari had to remove theirs to stop the brakes overheating which tells you how good they are. {Comment #97}

Would this be why Force India have only half a wheel cover on the front of their car?

  • Alianora La Canta10/03/2009 at 11:42

I believe the current suspects for running it in Australia are McLaren, Ferrari, Renault, Red Bull…

    However, with the teams supplied by them it could end up having Force India, BrawnGP and Toro Rosso added to the list. {Comment #186}

McLaren were having trouble making their unit transportable last I heard, which could (but might not) rule them out. Force India aren't having KERS until Spain anyway for reliability reasons.

I have no idea where Renault are with their KERS system, but my guess is that Red Bull will follow their lead.

Ferrari were behind everyone else last I heard, so I doubt they've suddenly reached the head of the queue.

So KERS in Melbourne does not look good.
