The start of another week, and we've got more testing to watch. The teams get going in Barcelona today, and this time, it's testing with added Brawn. Thankfully, though, there are other things to talk about than just ex-Honda these days:
- It looks like Bruno Senna is going to give Le Mans a go, as he's missed out on an F1 opportunity this year. It looks like all involved think it would be good for the young Brazilian to get some more mileage under his belt. Well, if it works for Bourdais, it can work for anyone!
- Yesterday's installment of the Races to Remember series looked at the European Grand Prix at Donington. If you've got memories of this event, of the racing, or of the circuit itself, then please leave your thoughts in the comments.
- And while you're in the real-time comments, don't forget you can check out the new share image button. It's particularly useful today, if you spot any good pictures from Barca.
That's all for now. Let's hope we can read something into the testing performance today, although I highly doubt it. While we wait for the times to trickle in, I will see you in the comments.
STR supposed to be launching today too
Just got pole on BATracer. :)
Just saw that. Well done.
Who dropioed the cat in the lime crash helmet?
no idea. if i had to guess, i'd say someone was testing doohickey/dropio.
fun tho :)
Looks like icanhascheezburger.com fare
that's where i've seen it before :)
Hello SPC. Are teams only running one car each at these tests because they are not allowed more, or are they testing the only piece of complete machinary they have? Or is there some other explaination? I am confused.
Maybe the testing mileage restriction is the case
I think there is a rule now that limits the number of cars they can test at any one time. I think the limit now is one.
No doubt Alianora will find this and sort us out.
Hello! Was wondering if someone could tell me where and how I could watch testing? Thank you!
How long before Jonathan Legard (or any commentator for that matter) confuses the RB5 with the STR4 on track?
We haven't found access to video as yet, but you can follow times and updates at http://directo.thef1.es/tests/
A very interesting article from Joe Saward (Grand Prix.com)
It's interesting the comments he makes about Nick Fry still being involved and the circumstances of Gonda selling the team - he cites the usual reasons but also speculated that maybe the Max Mosley affair could have played a part in the exit and that F1 could have been used to oust members of the Gonda board as it was perceived as a waste of money - could well be true, especially as the company is Japanese and hate embarrasment!
Also, he takes a nice swipe at those who 'rehash stories and add an opinion' *cough*GMM*cough* ;-)
I think he has a fair point although I wonder if he is being a bit 'protectionist' because he has a press pass and he sees blogging as a potential threat - sorta like wikipedia is to the Encyclopedia Britannica?
Give us your opinions guys! :-)
I think the comments on that post are interesting.
what happened to him ?
well I don't know, I read GrandPrix.com, but they also sent recently several rumours and speculations that turned out to be just that, rumours and speculations ...
Brawn GP/Button at the top of the timesheets this morning in Barcelona :-)
What the?!?!?
Sounds very much like that!
It's hard to know if to disagree with his statements as he doesn't give any real examples for us to go on. Is he having a pop at bloggers for giving their own opinions for example? Ban the Internet and free speech post haste!
I'd imagine they'll be running on fumes all week trying to drum up some much needed sponsorship?
Even so, the fact is - their car DOES have some pace in it!
I'm more concerned that Sutil is 3rd with apparently 00 laps completed...
http://www.sniffpetrol.com/2009/03/09/those-brawn-gp-sponsors-in-detail/
:-D
looking at the STR4 launch photos, what is Volkswagen logo doing there on the backdrop ? anyone has any idea ?
They're a partner for both STR and RBR. They supply vehicles for the crew trackside at each race.
Already Drop.io'd. ;)
Download the 'Gareth Jones on Speed' Podcast if you like Sniff Petrol - it's the same guys and it's well funny!
I listen to it on a fairly regular basis. The only thing I don't like is the cringe worthy 'acting' segments!
I have a 'Crazy Dave' T-shirt as well :-)
Don't have one of them - do have one of their older Stop the Cock campaign ones though.
Hmm the 'acting' is ok - it's the songs that drive me mad!
Brawn have a lot of empty space to fill up with sponsors, I fully expect them to be near the top of the time sheets this week even if it requires running under weight to achieve it.
It seems that lots of cars are on track but very few are doing laps...go figure...
I think there is a rule now that limits the number of cars they can test at any one time. I think the limit now is one.
No doubt Alianora will find this and sort us out. {Comment #10}
This year, teams can run as many cars as they please, provided they stick to the other limitations of testing such as the 15000km limit. There used to be a rule restricting testing to one or two cars at a time but it was rescinded last year. I am not sure why even the richest teams are only sending one car to the European tests (even though Ferrari and Toyota took two to Bahrain) - perhaps they are trying to bring out the Melbourne stuff as late as possible? There does seem to be more secrecy than usual in the paddock...
even though it's not accurate, that makes me very very happy :D
Is it me, or is it really cold outside today?
Just went out to get my lunch and can't feel my feet now.
joe's final comment sums up everything we've been saying for about 6 months:
"This is a blog. It is not the same thing as a news website."
"I am having a go at news websites that claim to be something they are not. End of story."
brilliant :)
it's cold. and i had to take my shoes off in textiles today cause someone wanted to draw them. that's 2 hours of standing on a cold floor :(
It's lovely here, bit windy but in general a nice day. Which makes me happy as i have a driving lesson in an hour :D
It's a mystery, you would think they would be interested in seeing if the rule changes have made it easier to overtake if nothing else - I won't be surprised if Red Bull and Toro Rosso spend some time trailing each other around.
agreed. however, over the past however long we've been doing this (and actively paying attention to such things). grandprix.com strike-rate has been pretty damn good.
no-one's going to get everything right, always.
There they are, out on track!
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/brawngparego-jpg
I supposed the phrase "Gives you wings" has never been more appropriate. Look at the size of that thing!
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/givesyouwings-jpg
Oops. I meant this one.
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/brawngpontrack-jpg
That toro rosso looks really.... strange. I can't put my finger on why though
And current times:
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/testingtimes-jpg-jpg
i've commented on the post. personally i don't read it the way you've suggested.
i think he's just mightily fed up with websites re-hashing old (and often incorrect) news, claiming it as fact and duping fans in the process.
there are sites out there with ideas above their station, who've amassed a small following and declared themselves to be all-knowing when it comes to the subject of formula one.
the key point that joe mentions, and the line i love the most, is that proper f1 journalists can "...can pick up the phone and call the movers and shakers to verify the rumours that they hear"
there are many wannabes, making a killing on advertising from page views, who simply cannot do that.
With the gold on the tip of the nose it kinda looks like a ducks head.. :D
The amount of air underneath that rear wing is astonishing - I'm pretty sure it's just the angle of the photo though
The STR rear wing actually looks non-2009 spec in the photo but I think that's just the camera angle as it is the proper width in more front-on shots that I've seen.
Just put the Toro Rosso press pack on drop.io download here
Love it! :-D
Hey everyone
Back on the library computers since the recovery discs I need to revive my laptop have not arrived yet. Still, just been looking at some of the Barcelona testing pics. Have to say the Toro Rosso and Brawn GP cars are looking good, and what's better is that Jenson is topping the times! :D GO BRAWN GP!
F1today are reporting that McLaren are lifting off in the straights to distort their true performance today. Sandbagging ahoy!
so that's how they've been doing it.
BRAWN GP have gotta be running underweight ... there's no way that car should be at the front after only a shakedown - it's just not possible!!!
Anything's possible under the genius that is Brawn ;)
Although you should take into account this quote from the Autosport story about Brawn GP's promising start:
Brilliant! Nice to have a team remaining with a sence of humor. :D
maybe it's an indication of just how much everyone else is sandbagging?
Either way, it's not a fair reflection of performance.
GAAAH!!! I hate testing!
maybe the car was THAT good, and some of its sandbagging too
they've put some paint on that fin:
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/red-bull-painted-fin-jpg
and the renault appears to have sprouted uprights on the sidepods:
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/renault-r29-with-uprights-jpg
i am slightly concerned that the thef1.es website is displaying advertisements that aren't exactly safe for work. an ad-blocker is essential today :)
i was wondering who'd mension it first ;)
luckily i use my own laptop
normally we link to the site during tests. think we'll recommend:
http://www.f1today.nl/live-update/2009/03/09/circuit-de-catalunya/
instead!
i think i prefer that one anyway, the other one appears to be just plain wrong
given that renault have branded the entire fin with ING colours:
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/ing-branded-fin-jpg
could we speculate that the team intend to run some form of fin at every gp?
Erm, I don't think that's paint. That's just the rear wing endplate. The angle of the pic makes it look like they've added the Red Bull Cola branding.
Good god - they're making it worse!
Biggest change to the Renault is that this week the nose is legal, it wasn't before.
looks exactly the same to me:
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/renault-nose-jpg
what have they changed?
It's to do with this:
http://www.f1technical.net/development/226
As you can see, the questionable vertical surfaces have now gone from below the nose so it doesn't look anywhere near as deep from the side:
http://i44.tinypic.com/2n64uaq.jpg
Explanation modded :-(
The vanes on the underside changed?
got ya. were they hiding anything with those, or just experimenting?
possibly one of the above, or they misinterpreted the regulations.
The Brawn diffuser (which sounds like a hairdryer attachment) is a step up from some of the basic designs we've seen this year:
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/brawndiffuser-jpg
ahh, they've not been sitting on their hands have they :)
It looks like they have been developing the car during the winter if that diffuser is anything to go by...
more comments from joe on his blog post:
"When all is said and done, however, F1 fans will get what they deserve. If they prefer to read the sensationalised c*** that is turned out each week by these people then that is what they will get."
love it.
I am not saying, but I am not the one writing that post on Joe Savard's blog ...
now, there is a Bwin sponsorship for Brawn story on GrandPrix.com ending this way:
my question is, why Mr Savard does not pick up the phone and calls someone in garage (as he says it should be done) to confirm or deny the rumour before running the story ?
don't take me wrong, I am not trying to slam him. I am just a bit surprised by the tone of that post. But I very much understand where his frustration is coming from. I do experience the same in my daily line of work (that has nothing to do with F1 :-) ) . Doing things right simply costs money but there are people around who can achieve same or similar result for much less, some only by chance but some very consistently. That is a fact one simply has to accept. People will not be forever buying your stuff only because you tell them you are doing it better than others ... Applies to any business, not only to F1 reporting.
he's already answered that argument further down in his comments hasn't he?
i'm sure joe has the number of honda's press office, but there are times when no-ones going confirm a story like that. regardless, that isn't the point he's arguing, is it?
fair point. which is why i think the independent f1 journalist will likely cease to exist in the future. the numbers no longer add up.
that may not be an entirely bad thing, and maybe joe's overreacting. i think he may have picked the wrong example to kick off with, but maybe the frustrations needed to come out today.
yay it's nice to see that development is not as hindered as was thought, unfortunatly yet more waiting to see how good they actually are.
also, a new fuel flap system:
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/odd-honda-fuel-flap-jpg
Afternoon all, feel rubbish, managed to survive school today, though History wasn't fun at all.
Congrats sir, though how one Minardi can be 4th (well done Alianora) and the other 11th is odd.
It's the same with all sports, not to fussed really
Aren't you meant to support McLaren?
I do like the new Toro Rosso, I always like their designs anyway.
i've referred to them as 'honda' at least 3 times today...and had to correct myself when trying to say 'Brawn F1'... Brawn GP just doesn't roll of the tongue. It's gonna take some getting used to.
Any car can have pace if it is running 60kg lighter than the others. We know the engine has the power to get the job done so if the basic aero package is close to reasonable an empty fuel tank and no balllast should make it faster than cars doing serious testing.
There is more to be gained by running in clear air and getting the basic package sorted out that trying out overtaking moves. Everyone knows that everyone else will have a new aero package for Melbourne and there may be something in those packages to make overtaking more difficult.
Oooh weird in the doohicky I'm now getting this:
"Error: Could not submit comment."
Using Firefox 3 on Windows XP :(
And I think they aren't even Brawn F1 are they? I think maybe GP?
test
and now it's working?!?!?
They're Brawn GP, but Brawn F1 sounds better. Of course, Bernie absolutely refuses to let anyone be called F1 in F1... ;)
Especially as Brawn and Grand sort of rhyme.
I guess that Renault were trying to see how much downforce they coule create with the vanes in place. Now that they have that figure they can decide whether to spend a lot of money trying to generate that downforce legally. Either that or they were using the downforce there to balance the weight distribution and now they have managed to move enough weight forward.
that's what i meant. sorry i didn't really describe it properly :)
sidepodspace update
NASA are just trying to confuse us now. Discovery still looks good for launch on Wednesday which is not confusing. However there will be a six hour spacewalk on Tuesday ie tomorrow by two of the members of the Expedition 18 team who form the permanent crew of the ISS. Starting at 12:20pm EDT 17:20 UK with NASA TV coverage starting 20 minutes earlier ISS Commander Mike Fincke and Flight Engineer Yuri Lonchakov will install EXPOSE-R, a European experiment that exposes seeds and spores to the environement of space.
mr yossidlr has video of the brawny (+ others) in action:
anyone know why teams have started cooling the front brakes via the side wheel covers, rather than the traditional, forward facing, air inlets?
woo, nice one mr c. made me smile when ross was standing there and someone came over to shake his hand :D
great seeing the cars back out on track. Hurry up the next 2 weeks or so!
Those are illegal aerodynamic devices but because they first appeared on a Ferrari they are legal. They don't cool the brakes as much as a standard duct and twice last year Ferrari had to remove theirs to stop the brakes overheating which tells you how good they are.
They exist to manage airflow around the wheels which is one of the most complicated areas to manage.
I suspect with the size of that front wing it's easier - and any flow over the brakes is better than none.
Seems to be mainly when the car is being moved though, as the brake disk rotates then all the disk is getting the cooler air. When stationary they go for the duct.
i know what they are :)
my question is, why is it more efficient to cool the brakes from the side rather than the front, when the cooler's connection is shaped to fit on the front?
ahhhhh, clever. thank you.
:D aww i've missed that sound :) gosh the next 17 days can't pass quickly enough :)
Just guesswork. That frontwing does look a pain to work around though.
It's not.
Hungaroring question on Eggheads. It is compulsory to have an F1 question on every BBC quiz.
What wasa it?
Which sport is hosted at the Hungaroring?
Football, Tennis or F1
Sooner or later quiz contestants are just going to automatically say F1 to any sports question.
:D
today's real or fake:
"Nigel Mansell (Mansell5) is now following your updates on Twitter."
http://twitter.com/Mansell5
i've read it twice and can't decide.
No whingeing so its not him
I am thinking of getting a twitter account in the nmae of Ayrton Senna.
:)
quick heads up for the geeky ones out there.
christine requested some time ago that we have an option to run various bits of sidepodcast on the desktop, rather than inside a browser.
ideally this would include realtime commenting, and maybe some live video streaming too. we've sort of run out of time during he off-season, but have at least made a start.
if you're familiar with adobe air, and don't mind installing rough and ready desktop software, you can download the installer here:
http://www.sidepodcast.com/desktop/sidepodcastdesktop.air
i'm writing this comment from the application now, and it'll work on windows, mac and linux. it isn't a fully fledged rich application as yet, and we know it must do things like, pop-up alerts when new comments come in. it also doesn't handle external links properly either.
what it is though, is a step towards creating a collection of rich clients that will enable to do even more than we can currently do in the browser. it won't be for everyone, but since using it, i have found i'm less prone to closing the application by accident, which i frequently did with browser tabs.
we figured it was worth throwing the idea out there, so that if either of us mention "sidepodcast desktop" in the future, you'll at least know what we're talking about.
ill give it a go, sounds like the future, and hey; who can turn down the chance to be part of the geeky ones ;)
I'll give it a go...
Is it Windows7 ready? ;)
ha. dunno. depends if AIR runs on windows 7 i guess?
I'm doing too many things at once, cheers ;)
admit it, you're just trying to get everyone even more addicted to spc :P
hehe. yell if you have issues. linkage is a big issue, but aside from that it's basically the same as doohickey.
i am just doing as i'm told ;)
Seems to so far...
After a quiet life then? ;)
THIS IS SO COOL!! I LOVE THIS (and yes i am easily pleased)
Right, it works, and I tell ya something, will be great for live commenting for races with live timing in one corner etc.
At the minute it seems a bit slow, could be the desktop, could be my computer. And lets be fair, it is the doohickey not on the internet, but a nice start.
ace :)
blimey!
It works
Ok, having to run it in compatibility mode - for some reason refuses to run natively...
Works though. :D
For non geeks (at least in this area), how do I get it to work?
Go to the link and click install/download. I think anywho
yay it works :)
Download Adobe Air installer
Install
Download the sidepodcast.air app
Install it
Run it.
absolutley.
it's basically a broswer fixed to a single page. in future though, it should contain a bunch of tabs for various pages, and probably a media player for live shows / archive podcasts.
I now have two different doohickeys so I can talk to myself.
Oh wow...
Good job Mr c!
:D
Any way to stop it following links if you accidentally click on them...
Pain in the bum that. Just navigated to the daily page and can't get back!
Like a sidepodcast version of MSN
If you use the desktop doohickey and left click on a link it opens a new window.
Sadly, it didn't. Had to close and restart it. :(
Thanks, It's working now. I assumed you needed a program to get it to work.
try the backspace button.
i tried to solve the issue, but it's beyond air's ability it seems. essentially it needs to be more than just an embedded web browser and that's exactly what it will be... one day.
in the meantime, every bug that's present now, we're stuck with at least short term.
Can't have everything
Strange. As soon as you posted your comment I clicked on a link to try it and it opened in a new window.
Question, could this work when say mediatemple goes kaput and use this instead of the site?
nope... and yes.
the version that we want to make, will include some peer-to-peer technology (MSN style), which means if MT does go down, we can still talk to each other.
however, at the moment we all point directly at MT.
That worked.... eventually. Was a touch slow.
Just noticed that I have 3 reply buttons when doing a post on it.
Really want people to reply eh? ;)
mine's the same. it's not an optimal browsing experience :(
alex had that issue on saturday. i can't seem to repeat it?
Just restarted - working ok now.
I only have one.
me too. i feel left out :P
Lets try out drop.io on this with another brawn gp wallpaper that my time supposed to be doing uni work has come up with
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/brawngp2-jpg
That's a good one!
one other thing to mention, is we're moving the live commenting page before the start of the season. that will give us the following urls:
- http://www.sidepodcast.com/realtime/
/desktop will likely be a download page, with installtion instructions.
as we release the "movable boxes" version of lclt, you'll be able to see it at the new url, while the old one keeps working. at the moment, the page shows the realtime shell, but please ignore that.
any questions?
I think we are being discriminated against.
It popped up and worked perfectly
No, but I love you
:S
:D
:D
Nice work Luke, looking good.
5 stars sir!
Have you been drinking? Whats next? You're my bestest mate!
I have a question mr C; will the program automatically open when windows starts up? Would be nice for it to pop up on the desktop whilst everything else is loading.
I know Twhirl is an Air application and just hates to start up half the time anyways let alone automatically with windows.
As far as I'm aware, no.
oooh. now that is a good question. lemmie google it.
you want it to open straight away?! you have an addiction my friend
addiction... laziness... impatience with windows... it can all be placed into one big reason I suppose :P
i just heard an f1 engine, looked up at the streaming iplayer and realised it was an advert for formula 1. i didn't catch if it was for the preview show or anything (it was literally a few secs), anyone else seen it? i'm all excited now :D
:)
the answer is yes, it can be set to autostart. we'll make sure there's an option to enable that in the next version. lord knows when that will be, but probably a couple races into the season.
its the trailer for the f1 I think
BBC have been running 5 second ads for about a week now. They are for the Aus GP.
sounds good :)
you can tell i haven't been watching tv for a while :)
A-HA!
Just got 2 instances running. :D
Strange how I managed it. Clicked on the daily link and it opened in the same window, then selected the live commenting thingy and it opened in a new window - then used backspace to go back to the doohickey.
Bit convuluted, but it worked.
Have the 3 reply buttons back again though...
Oh, no....Just when things where looking up for him...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ubTYl3wFhk
Someone better tell Lou the bad news....
Right, I try clicking on the link but it comes back to lclt
Oh.... if anything deserved an IP ban... that is it! :P
that just happens to be a broken link :)
:D
eeeekkkk....
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/73646
♥
On twitter Lee McKenzie just mentioned...
What teams have confirmed they'll be starting with KERS then? Completely fallen out of my head
As far as I'm aware, none.
Probably why I can;t think of any then, slow moment.
Bloody Youtube with there silly linking system. This one is from my address bar.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ubTYl3wFhk
Don't ban my IP until you actually see it. I get my F1 news from someplace a little better than GMM....
...Plus I will not be able to defend my title....
erm, how are ya linking jordan? seems to be having issues. should i fix?
:D
oh, all right then ;)
Correct.
I believe the current suspects for running it in Australia are McLaren, Ferrari, Renault, Red Bull...
However, with the teams supplied by them it could end up having Force India, BrawnGP and Toro Rosso added to the list.
A bloke at pub whose mates, wifes dog peed against the same post as someone who lives 10 miles from the team HQ?
surely Brawn GP would try and adapt the kers system the team worked so hard on rather than just getting one from Mclaren?
Depends if they can integrate it in time.
ahh, pitpass.
Nice PR move from Brawn but they need sponsors so "magical" speed's something to do with trying to impress potential moneybags. Old Arrows or Prost trick when they would send Jos the boss or good old Jean out to do a few qualifying laps. The only thing that can save the team from potential embarrassement is the return of D.Richards. B.A.R. were going to win the championship in 1999 but they were beaten even by Minardi. Besides, what's fat old Bubens is doing there? Veteran drivers are safe and slow, they perform when in the mood. Generally it's all talk, before the season they're raring to go ("fitter than ever", "faster than ever", "thinner than ever") then after the 2nd race "I-realized-how-my-family-is-important-to-me" talk starts. I think even Mika Salo (who was the 1st ever B.A.R. driver to actually finish the race) would've been faster!
Unfortunately, Brawn GP is likely to replace Force India at the back of the field.
Given that they don't have stacks of money and don't need to create loads of work for themselves and that the diffeerence between any two KERS systems is likely to make no real performance difference I doubt it. Besides if I was Mercedes or McLaren I wouldn't allow them to use a system that may be better and there would be a clause in the contract to that effect.
hi all. long time listener, first time....poster?
i've got nothing of real interest to contribute right now, but now seems as good a time as any to get involved and say hi. i'm chris evans (not the ginger one, honest), i'm from huddersfield (aka the hudd) and for some reason i don't seem to be using capital letters today.
look forward to getting to know you all!
Thank god for that! :D
Hello and welcome to the nuthouse.
:D
Mr C in disguise ;)
Welcome sir, nice to see ya on this place
I'm liking that. :)
howdy chris.
you are a good man :)
Hey Chris. :)
You do realise that Heidfeld eventually finished top.
Hi Chris. Always good to have new posters. Look forward to reading your views.
If anyone else feels like posting their first comment now is as good a time as any. It is must comment Monday after all.
language
can't imagine why ;)
No, Flibster. My sources get absolutely correct information. Nothing made up here! Perhaps technically, a less than correct use of grammar for the proper choice of words (like when to use "hanged" vs. "hung", but we are way past GMM's level at that point...
With a name like this you have to be specific.
Hey, capital letters! Maybe I'll alternate just to be cool. Is that cool?
I'm guessing not.....
heya chris :)
It's monday? :?
Mr C doesn't use capitals and he's cool and a genius.
:D
cheers for all the warm welcomes!
oddly i feel like i already know a lot of you from sidepodpanel and such.
I do. It's something I choose to overlook. ;)
Stalker! 8O
Speaking of sidepodpanel, my notes page is looking rather sparse.
:)
You will no doubt get lots of ideas over the next few days. When I hosted I thought I would struggle to find good open questions that would get people talking but I found all the questions I asked and a good few more in less than 24 hours.
is it this weekend then?
How did I manage to give away my secret in a mere 3 posts?
We have two sidepodpanels coming up if memory serves. I am not aware if someone has already been appointed to host the second one but I am sure there must be people who haven't done it before who would be game to do it.
Maybe it should be Brawn Prix then?
BP anyone? Oh, maybe not...
*raises hand*
yay! :)
If I can get a new headset which isn't blootoof.
yay! :)
that was almost too enthusiastic......
:/
i think it'll be more than three. at least i hope it will. we can't start until the mixer returns though, and at the moment it's still undergoing repairs :(
guilty.
Who touched it?
What's a mixer then?
New series of air crash investigation, get in.
James Allen has updated the Trulliometer:
http://allenonf1.wordpress.com/2009/03/09/bullish-trulli-predicts-massive-year-for-toyota/
In the sense of the show, not the crashes
nice save
there's a photograph hanging on the wall behind christine, and 70% of the live issues we've experienced since starting can be attributed to the pesky thing (the other 30% were pretty much incompetence on my part).
???
???
I can see why that would be needed. No mixer - no cupcakes.
Nah, do not bother. Thought RG or Flibster had a bad link, so I used both the one that Youtube supplies and the same one from the address bar....
No one bit? I thought that video was funny. More funny than getting hurt sneezing in an elevator and more "F1" revealant, anyways...
:)
Oh, sure blame the mixer 70% of the time....
hahaha. this is the damn device:
http://www.alesis.com/io26
don't buy one.
Whew, dodged a bullet there
Be a man...
Build one yourself! :D
i can't be trusted with selotape.
one of many ;)
You'll be doing that a lot here.
And another tip, don't say certain things, ie, Mr C can't comment for a whole day or you sang YMCA.
Thats good. If you make it properly you won't need any tape. :D
However, it does involve hot soldering irons, sharp blades and sensitive electronics.
Given how well the cupcake turned out *until Christine made the icing ;) * it should be easy.
All together now
It was a stay at the....
I jest, I jest.
Can we manage a deal here say, if you can sing YMCA this sunday?
this sunday....?
speaking of which R.G. You'll be opening the podpanel with a verse of YMCA wont you ;)
Duet?
don't do it, RG is trying to get out of doing it himself ;)
just a verse, oh thank god.
so that's a yes?
Why not. I'll just pick the shortest one.
come along, surely there has to be a chorus too
and a chorus?
first verse and chorus?
Speaking of which, did that 20 pounds or whatever make it into the Sidepodcast collections agency, yet?
And the actions!
This is starting to worry me...
Organising group performances of YMCA?
yep ;)
and here was me thinking this site was about F1!
I can't hold a phone and do the actions and sing at the same time
I found a problem with paypal, so Jeremy suggested I get a mike instead
We've done stranger stuff... ;)
Ah yes, that's not always the case...
We do tend to go off tangents some times, but there is usually great intellectual discussions. I mean have you ever listened to the chat? Thats intellecutal. ;)
it was once :)
i think he's buying a mic to save us money on skype ;)
oh but of course
Think of the long run, dunno if I can get one for the panel tho
Have you ever tried? ;)
two words:
elastic band
Who gave you that idea?
RG:
Save yourself. Send 20 pounds to Sidepodcast GHQ. I have not heard of the Village People since that Simpsons Cartoon show with the Barber Shop quartet the "B-Sharps"...When the Police Chief had to be replaced becasue he was to "Village People"...
Rest of guys, force RG to sing solo... RG might try to lip-sinc the words to bet out of the deal...
Look there is nothing remotely odd about sining the 12 days of Xmas in a panda suit.
no worries sir. we've had a couple of very kind donations this month.
talking of which, we're probably going to do more with the donation button in the future. maybe make some kind of roll-of-honour section on the (redesigned) site for anyone who's contributed.
when people donate, we can't tell whether they'd prefer to be anonymous or not, so we might end up emailing everyone soon and asking if it's okay.
just thought we should throw the concept out there. if anyone has suggestions for other ways we can give credit, please yell.
Sellotape was mentioned earlier. Only a suggestion.
It is the off-season. This is how they fill in the "dead-air".....
filmspotting do it on their podcast with people who have donated over a certain amount of money.
I might just try that.
The delicious Lee McKenzie says that only BMW Sauber will be using KERS in Melbourne.
Twitter update over.
may have to give it a listen. does it get annoying though?
Okay, I thought we said we weren't doing it.
I don't think it does, they try to make it intresting. Though at times I think they do rush it a bit. But only cos they get so many.
The silence might be quite noticable, other than that, it's a good plan.....My ears approve....
am downloading now.
Come again?
That bit is sectioned at 46:13, along with recent DVD releases
SPC Operating system? What would that be called? Desktop-Doohickey? Megablastic Monitor? Trulli Portable?
Trulli Good Desktop Doohickey?
Just noticed on identica that the new races to remember is up. It's a real pain having to switch back to the old fashioned internet browser for it.
:D
That's the laptop version.
Hehe.
:D
:)
Well it's interesting but a bit sensationalist. Not as bad as "Seconds from DISAAASTER!" though (and it's even worse in Danish!)
The Piper Alpha SFD episode is particularly tacky and came a bit too close to home for my liking :-(
Plus it was actually a disaster, not merely a near miss.
got it, thanks.
I can't install Adobe Air - Error -10822
i just called someone else Mr C and now feel wierd, like a kid being caught doing something i shouldnt
I know some of you here like the Big Picture, but what did you think of this photo?
I can just imagine Arnie shaking hands with the robot and saying in a Terminator voice "I AM YOUR DADDY!"
Well, it sounded funny earlier...
not a clue. shall look into it.
"No Luke, I am your father!"
Yes, for some reason the robotic arm is called Luke.
I've not turned anything up so far.
Hi guys :)
evening. new laptop?
Woodwiss
heya scott :)
evening
Evening
Woodwiss, laptop, NOW!
do you think he's ever coming back?
Who?
We love you Woodwiss, please don't leave
:)
No I was serious - but I figured out we meant the Woodinator ;-)
genuine contribution time!
so what do we all reckon to mclarens apparently dire lap times on testing so far? autosport say they have been testing a new floor (though i don't see why that would explain poor lap times unless it's rubbish!) and some people think they are simply holding back so as not to reveal their true performance to their rivals.
Testing means about as much as Virgin's contribution to F1. Wait until Qualifying in Melbourne before we can see the REAL performance!
I think McLaren will be at the front come Melbourne. Nothing that happens in testing can be believed. There is an old saying in motor racing that goes back to the early days of the sport when races were started with a green flag.
When the greenflag drops the bullsh*t stops. The implication being that anything that happens till the serious running starts is bull.
No, I don't have a new laptop. In fact, I'm just waiting for the recovery discs to revive my existing one. I'm just using my mum's laptop.
So don't worry, I'm not going anywhere! I was commenting earlier on today from the library but I wasn't sure if you guys were taking any notice.
Apparently McLaren have been easing off on the straight.
McLaren also traditionally run a large fuel load and also a conservative setup during testing.
it's not normal to see them this far back at this point of the test schedule though.
we always notice :)
I saw ya dude!
We see everything...
Alreet, bye all!
sidepodspace update
NASA reporting no technical problems with Discovery and weather looks like it will allow the first launch window to be used. Assuming that they are sticking to their schedule the fuel cell loading should be taking place now.
Good night RG
Of course we notice you.
I agree that it's not wise to read too much into testing this early, but it does seem odd that they have only just started testing with the 2009 rear wing.
gnight.
night RG.
Ooooh. I don't know what that means but it sounds exciting :)
I should have also said that the weather is not only looking good at the launch site but also at all the transatlantic abort sites.
It means we have a late night on Wednesday as it looks like the launch should happen on time.
im off ladies and gentlemen, haven't been that active today...i've been being creative, lots of paper and card and glue and mess. woop.
however this new desktop thing is the coolest thing since sliced bread. fact.
night all
Night Jon and Night all!
oh and lou, 2 days and 11 hours till d-day :( although your lucky because you've got another year and another shot at your exams

night all
Night Jon, Gavin and Chris.
Waaaaah! I can't see it. (Stamps foot)
And now my plus sign is back too.
soz sir. you have another mac?
it's goona be so disappointing once you have it working :)
All I see is the Doohickey is there supposed to be something different?
are ya flicking between "ye olde" and doohickey or something? i can repeat the issue :(
nope. it's really not that impressive yet. very early days... very.
I'm working on it :)
This is not fair.
Other half brought home a present she was given at work today. 30year old single malt Ardbeg whisky.
Whisky was always one of my drinks of choice and Ardbeg was one of my favourite malts.
I no longer drink... and the other half doesn't drink whisky...
Damn. :(
OK, just thought I might be missing out on some of fun that has gotten some people very excited:)
As it's red nose day on Friday - can we expect a comedy feast from Mrs C and Mr C? A outakes show? ;)
BATracer results in. Oh dear.
Ahhh, The Piper Alpha, the's safeest airplane. You can just barely get killed in it.....
......
The only time I ever heard of Piper Alpha it was an oil rig. That wasn't too safe either.
I'm talking Piper A series... Piper's Aircraft from around 1950, previously they use the "J-series"....
it is? oh.
Gaffertape surely? Just avoid anywhere hairy... or not, as your preferance may be...
Or microphones do go onto stands you know? :-P
ahh, i can be trusted with that... just.
:D
Lol,... so never a first timer on festival/backstage crew then? Although we were generally good and left the 'talent' aalone (they weren't fun, they worried about bare patches lolol)
There is a facebook group with something like 100 000+ members that is dedicated to gaffer/duct tape :-D
I wouldn't be surprised to find more than one F1 car held together with it though - it seems to keep rally cars on the 'road' after all........
:D
I'm not giving a good impression of myself am I?? (although at least when it was my turn I remembered to pull fast... I was not a sadist like Red...)
I do know where my towel is though - that has to be in my favour...
Filmspotting is a great podcast, that and Kermode and occasionally Movies You Should See
I think there is a rule now that limits the number of cars they can test at any one time. I think the limit now is one.
No doubt Alianora will find this and sort us out. {Comment #10}
There is no restriction on the number of cars in a test - that rule was scrapped in 2008 when the 30,000km rule was introduced. The regulation changes, resulting in teams wanting to release their definite components as late as possible and thus not waste their time making components that may not be of use (even in testing) shortly after production, is the most likely cause of the reluctance of teams to send multiple cars to European testing.
i had to take my shoes off in textiles today cause someone wanted to draw them. that’s 2 hours of standing on a cold floor {Comment #37}
Sounds nasty, lou...
They don’t cool the brakes as much as a standard duct and twice last year Ferrari had to remove theirs to stop the brakes overheating which tells you how good they are. {Comment #97}
Would this be why Force India have only half a wheel cover on the front of their car?
I believe the current suspects for running it in Australia are McLaren, Ferrari, Renault, Red Bull…
However, with the teams supplied by them it could end up having Force India, BrawnGP and Toro Rosso added to the list. {Comment #186}
McLaren were having trouble making their unit transportable last I heard, which could (but might not) rule them out. Force India aren't having KERS until Spain anyway for reliability reasons.
I have no idea where Renault are with their KERS system, but my guess is that Red Bull will follow their lead.
Ferrari were behind everyone else last I heard, so I doubt they've suddenly reached the head of the queue.
So KERS in Melbourne does not look good.
Oooh, I won the race. Only took me 22 hours to notice. ;)
